The Lighthouse War is over, but conflict still continues.

With Erusea's defeat at the hands of the Osean Federation and the International United Nations, the imperial nation has splintered into a confusing mess of separatists, freedom fighters, warlords, rogue military factions, and those seeking to profit from the chaos. Worse, Erusea's many automated drone factories still remain intact, waiting for new masters to come to claim them.

The Usean continent remains in crisis, and it's up to a new generation of pilots to face this next generation threat...

You are MILLY, the "Red Tail", a Belkan Air Force pilot fighting for the IUN!

Currently, you were flying in the midst of a pretty serious storm with Vicky, trying to draw a pair of F-35s away from a raid on a secret Erusean black site. Hopefully this air patrol would be the only thing you'd have to deal with, but who knew how quickly Erusea could scramble reinforcements?

Either way, the sheets of rain and the flash of lightning were becoming all too familiar, especially with your last combat mission. Water struck and flowed off your F-16's bubble canopy, obscuring your vision worse than the clouds ever could. Your radar was a mess with the clouds and lightning causing all sorts of interference. Probably wasn't going to to do much good against stealth fighters like F-35s, anyways.

You haven't made contact or seen sight or sound of those F-35s in a while, though. Where they still lost in the storm looking for you, or had they given up and circled back towards the black site?

"Swordfish, let's circle around!" You instruct Vicky. "We've lost radio contact with the others, so we should check out how the assault is going!"

"Roger!" Vicky replies as her F-16 struggles to stay stable in the storm.

You carefully pull a full turn as quickly as the buffeting winds would allow you to do so safely. Vicky likewise follows your turn and you begin heading back the way you came.

You and Vicky burst out of the clouds, where you could see the entire floating platform ablaze in fire and smoke. You were pretty sure that wasn't part of the plan, considering the idea was to avoid unnecessary damage to the structure.

"Boss, what the hell is going on?!" You blurt.

"Resistance was much greater than expected." Bandit grunts as his F-16 circles overhead. "We believe a munitions stockpile touched off and the fire has been spreading uncontrollably."

"It totally wasn't my fault!" Angela insists

"Looks kinda pretty, though." Alanna muses.

"Black Team, we need precision air support." You hear Jager's voice grunt on the radio, gunfire echoing in the background. "We're cornered on Platform 1. You'll need to drop Platform 2 to open an escape route for us."

Wait, what did he mean by "drop"!?

"I understand." Bandit says grimly. "Just give us-"

Suddenly, the pair of F-35s you've been tangling burst out from the clouds as well, apparently have finally tailed you and Vicky.

"C'mon, Boss! Let's drop that damn platform before the air cover gets here!" You bark to Bandit.

"Right, follow me in." He instructs. "Knives, Swordfish, keep an eye out for us. Orpheus, continue suppressing the defenses."

"Not like there's many left..." Angela sighs.

And then Bandit's F-16 dives down towards the burning platforms, Your HUD already marks which one is Platform 2.

"So what's the plan here, Boss?" You ask as your planes drop lower and lower towards the water.

"These platforms' main weakness is that their sole support is focused on a centralized core block." Bandit replies. "It's trick to get an angle on, but if you can hit it, it'll send the entire platform crashing down."

"Why would they even design it that way?!" You gasp.

"They never thought pilots would be crazy enough to try it." Bandit replies simply as his F-16 finally levels out only a handful of meters above the ocean surface, just barely avoiding the heavy waves and surf surging upwards from the storm conditions. "You have to be practically under the platform to get a line of fire."

Sounds like a challenge you were willing to take a shot at!

You're already so perilously low to the water that the cresting of the waves nearly slam into the belly of your F-16, but you manage to maintain just enough height. Up ahead and just above, you could see the core block, the point at which the central support pillar connected to the actual platform itself, only visible at an upward angle from below. An angle only the ballsiest of pilots would even attempt in GOOD weather.

It might as well have been a walk in the park for you as you fire off a pair of missiles. They both streak upwards and hit straight and true, slamming into the core block and blowing it pieces.

For a brief second, you almost swear you saw the top of Platform 2 heave upwards ever so slightly from the blast, but gravity takes over and the entire structure comes back down on the compromised core block, crushing it into dust.

And Platform 2 begins to topple into the sea.

"Good shot! Now MOVE!" Bandit yells as his F-16 hits afterburners.

You wonder what the hurry is until a chunk of concrete splashes down into the water a few meters from your right wing, grimly reminding you that you were still UNDER Platform 2.

"Aaaaah!" You yelp as you hit afterburners as well, boosting out from under the falling platform.

As you shoot out, you catch sight of a submarine rising to the surface, IFF tagging it as a friendly as it moves towards Platform 1. Most likely Jager's extraction.

"We need a few more minutes to complete evac." Jager updates you all. "What's the situation topside?"

"These foes are particularly troublesome!" Misono growls.

"O-our planes can't keep up with F-35s!" Vicky wails.

Sure enough, your radar was reading both Misono and Vicky tangling with the F-35s, with neither side being able to get into an advantageous position over the other.

"I'm picking up contacts coming from the east!" Angela warns. "Eight planes! Looks like it's the first wave of Erusea's relief force!"

Your gun burst tears through the F-35's rear engine, sending it spiraling out of control to the raging ocean below.

One down, two more to go.

Unfortunately, in the time it took you to intercept that F-35, both Misono and Vicky had lost any positioning advantage they had, with both of them being tailed by their respective opponents.

"I-I can't shake him!" Vicky wails.

"They're certainly persistent!" Misono laughs, obviously taking the situation in good stride.

"Don't worry, I'm coming!" You assure them.

Now, Vicky was probably the least experienced out of the three of you, but she certainly was the most defensive. She could probably keep out of her opponent's sights for long enough. Hopefully.

Misono, on the other hand, was much more bold, willing to take risky maneuvers to turn the tables on her opponents. Even though she had the capability of turning her situation around, such a reckless style could be easily punished...

You ultimately decide not to pursue the fleeing F-35, opting to help out Misono, instead.

However, it looks like Misono has things handled on her end. As you turn to her location, you see she's already managed to get on her opponent's tail, refusing to let go like a determined hound.

Sure enough, it looked like a heavy furball was going on over the facility as Bandit and Orpheus tangled with a squadron a Rafales. Not nearly as threatening as F-35s, but there were still a good number of them. You keep pace with the extraction submarine as it dips below the waves into the relative safety of the deep water, but you knew you couldn't just assume they'd get away scot free. There were still a number of ways that Erusea could detect and track subs. Sonar buoys, underwater hydrophones, anti-sub patrols, and more. It wouldn't be surprising if they also scrambled anti-sub air assets in response to this raid, as well.

Suddenly, your radar picks up contacts coming from the northeast. You glance over and see a flight of four S-3 Vikings escorted by a pair of Super Hornets.

Of all the damn things!

The Vikings weren't particularly good fighters, but they were purpose built for anti-sub warfare, carrying both torpedoes and advanced sensors to do their jobs.

The Super Hornets, of course, were pretty effective naval fighters. They were going to be tough targets, especially in an F-16. You also grimly note the presence of large weapon pods slung on their bellies. Possibly EMLs.

However, the enemy squadron also seems to have noticed your presence. The Vikings start dropping altitude, and your radar starts going haywire. You had to assume one of those Vikings was a dedicated ECM variant. Meanwhile the two Super Hornets turn to engage you.

>-1 to ID stat (4)
>-1 to ACM stat (5)

Unfortunately, the Super Hornets react extremely quickly, their belly mounted EMLs glowing bright blue as they charge. You knew that EML rounds were extremely damn fast, making them difficult to dodge. Well, you just had to be faster, right?

You hit your afterburners while at the same time putting your F-16 into a spiraling dive. Your G-suit automatically constricts in an attempt to counter the g-forces, but it still feels like a truck being dropped on your chest The sudden and complex move proves impossible for the Super Hornets to target with their front facing EMLs and they overshoot, leaving the way to the Vikings open.

However, as you level out, you realize you're tasting copper in your mouth and your head is pounding with a dull, but noticeable pain.

But you push that sensation aside. The Vikings were right ahead of you. Your radar was still completely trashed. That ECM Viking was still going full blast, which would make taking them all out at once with missiles difficult.

Your best shot was to pick out that damn ECM Viking. If you could take it out, the other Vikings would be sitting ducks for your missiles. At the very least, the loss of their ECM cover should scatter them, giving the extraction sub time to get clear of the area.

You immediately pick out the offending S-3, noticeable thanks to the large antennas jutting from its fuselage and nose and ECM pods slung under its wings. You single it out and let loose a burst of cannon fire. The aircraft is basically shredded in half as it falls into the sea.

Immediately the interference on your radar clears up, and you get clear locks on the other Vikings.

The Vikings know this, too, and they immediately scatter in an attempt to evade you. They were easy targets, but you still had those Super Hornets to worry about. Besides, the Vikings were out of position now. It would be hard for them to search for the sub in this state.

You decide to ignore the Vikings for now, instead climbing back up to a manageable combat altitude in preparation for the Super Hornets, who were circling around to re-engage you.

Now, you were still confident you could gun run them, but tangling with their EMLs, especially head on, was a pretty dangerous prospect.

Alternatively, you could try harassing them with your QAAMs by firing them off at sharp angles, minimizing their ability to actually hit you. But with their numbers advantage, they would eventually be able to flank and pincer you.

You cautiously keep your distance from the Super Hornets, turning and banking away from them whenever they try to get a line of fire on you. You couldn't let them get a bead on you with those EMLs. Instead, you start firing off QAAMs in succession, hoping that the highly maneuverable missiles will be able to find their mark.

You keep dumping missiles at the Super Hornets, forcing them to keep dodging and maneuvering to avoid them, making it difficult to line up EML shots.

However, the trailing Super Hornet finally gets fed up, leveling out just long enough to charge up a shot. However, the leading Super Hornet suddenly jukes to avoid one of your QAAMs, sending him right in front of his wingmate the moment he fires his EML.

The lead Super Hornet shatters like glass as it is struck by a hypersonic slug, fired by his own wingmate no less.

Now it was down to one on one.

Defying all common sense, you fly head on right at the last remaining Super Hornet. Caught off guard by your bold charge, the Super Hornet fires off its EML, probably without properly aiming, as the shell flashes directly over your canopy, the miniature shockwave it generated briefly rattling your plane.

However, that mean there was nothing stopping you from retaliating against the Super Hornet. You close and respond with your cannon, punching rounds into the Super Hornet's nose and cockpit and sending the plane tumbling out of control.

And right on cue, Bandit's voice buzzes on the comm.

"All right everybody, mission accomplished. Disengage and return to base. Don't get bogged down in any more fighting."

Guess that was it, then.

The throbbing pain returns to your head, and it feels like some kind of liquid or bile was building up in your throat, making you nauseous. Maybe that hard maneuver messed you up a little more than you thought.

"Sure thing." You sigh as the medics begin to cart you away. After all, Bandit was likely going to find out some way or another anyways. Might as well take the path that will piss him off the least.

At the infirmary, you're given a wide battery of tests and examinations by the doctor, and they ultimately conclude that your bleeding was from some ruptured blood vessels torn open from your high G maneuver. You had also suffered some minor hemorrhaging in your brain, but the doctors ruled it as non life threatening and requested you to take it easy for the next few days.

Well, at least you weren't medically grounded. Though you were kind of dreading what would happen once Bandit found out...

"MILLY! "Vicky wails as she practically kicks the door open, much to the chagrin of the medical staff on duty. "PLEASE TELL US YOU"RE ALIVE!"

Vicky meanwhile dashes to your side, quickly patting your body down with her hands.

"Sure! I don't mind!" You grin. "We can all have like, a sleepover or something!"

Thankfully, you're the only patient in the infirmary, so the the medical staff don't make too much of a fuss about it, but they do make repeated warnings not to touch or damage anything and reminding you that there's a nurse on station outside if there was an emergency.

And that's how Vicky and Misono ended up sitting on both sides of your bed, just lounging around.

"So you said Eruseans were using EMLs?" Misono blinks. "That's rather unusual."

"I thought they were meant to be ground attack weapons." Vicky frowns. "Aren't they super hard to aim at moving targets?"

"Maybe they thought they were gonna need to hit ships." You shrug.

"Or perhaps they were very confident in their marksmanship." Misono adds. "Those shells travel very fast, and even a glancing hit can completely destroy a plane."

"Stop, I can only be so hard." You grin.

"Ah, that's right, you recovered an EML for your Wyvern project." Misono nods. "It somehow seems to be a fitting weapon for you."

"Once I figure out how to use the damn thing!" You laugh.

That elicits chuckles from both Vicky and Misono.

"Well, I look forward to see when you master it!" MIsono grins. "You're already quite skilled with fighter guns, so this should be a natural evolution for you!"

"Still, I'd sorta prefer pulse lasers." Vicky shrugs. "They seem more consistent and reliable."

"But they're highly reliant on weather conditions." MIsono points out. "Even the simplest cloud neutralizes them."

"Still, it would be really neat to have them!" Vicky says wistfully.

"So what do you think END is?" You ask your wingmates. "Bandit and Swallow seem pretty convinced it's a person, but I'm not so sure."

"Hm, it could very well be some sort of advanced drone AI." Misono nods. "After all, these terrorists don't seem to have any qualms about using drones to achieve their ends."

"I don't know, I think END might be a person." Vicky bites her lip. "From when we flew against them... it was just a feeling I got from the way they fly. A lot of anger... resentment. At least that's the feeling I get when I see them fly. Something that shouldn't be possible for an AI to replicate."

"Anger?" You raise an eyebrow.

"It's... hard to explain." Vicky mumbles. "But the way END always seems to go after you... I kind of get the idea that they have some kind of grudge against you, don't you think?"

Unfortunately, your memory of everybody you knew in One Belka at the time you were a member seemed to be really fuzzy as you tried to actively recall them. So much time has passed and so much crap has happened, you simply just couldn't account for everybody.

And that was assuming any of these people were still alive or not, which was a bit unlikely.

No, the only person from that life that you knew for certain was still around was Erwin. He was your only working link.

"I honestly don't know." You admit. "The only connection I can think of is a guy named Erwin. A guy I got mixed up with back in the day."

"Oh, okay then." Vicky seems to sigh in relief. "So you think he's after you, then?"

"Well, I'm not 100% sure, but he tried to scout me for Grunder, who've been pretty damn shady lately." You grumble. "I didn't think too much about it at the time, especially since he really wasn't much of a pilot himself. But now..."

"You think we should look into him?" Misono wonders. "A good old fashioned investigation!"

"Well, that's now how most Useans see it." Misono responds coolly.

"And what about you, Vicky?" You turn to her.

"Ah, well.... I'm not too sure about that yet." Vicky mumbles, shifting nervously. "I-I guess I haven't really planned that far ahead...?"

Sounded a bit like typical Vicky.

The next day, things proceeded routinely enough. The F-16s you were flying were quickly dismantled and loaded back into the cargo planes, and you all returned to your regular planes for the flight back to Fort Grays. Again, the flight back was uneventful. Looks like taking out Neo OB's satellite link really was putting a real dent in their intel gathering.

Seems like things around Fort Grays was starting to quiet down, too. With the IUN starting to reassert its authority, hot spots all over Usea were cooling down. Warlords were being suppressed, escaped penal soldiers were being rounded up, and the satellite communication network was starting to restore global communication.

Sure, Erusea was still a huge mess with numerous civil wars and independence movements still smoldering and burning, but that was honestly sorta their problem.

Anyways, there were a lot of talks about the IUN starting to demobilize some of its forces. Namely the majority of foreign personnel were set to return to their home countries while native Usean units picked up the slack. The IUN would go back to its original purpose of being an international peacekeeper.

Still, the threat of Neo One Belka, still hiding in the shadows, was still out there. You wondered what implications the IUN drawdown would have on the efforts to combat them.

Well, after you had returned, you had decided to...

You decided to go hang out with the other pilots to pass the time. It was the Oseans' turn for air patrols today so you were all off for the day, which was nice.

You were still taking a little easy, so as you stroll down the airstrip, taking in the nice island sea breeze, you wonder where to go. It looks like Vicky and Misono were off at one of the hangars checking something out. Odd, since it wasn't one assigned to your squadron.

Angela and Alanna, meanwhile, looked to be taking care of errands. You guess pulling favors with the ground crew and base staff, as they were lugging around lots of boxes.

And Sofia? She was lounging at the beach, drawing a small crowd who were observing her from a safe distance. Somehow you weren't really surprised.

"T-this can't be real!" Vicky stammers.

"I mean, it's right there. Seems real enough to me!" Misono laughs, slapping Vicky on the back.

"I didn't think they'd respond so fast! Or even at all!" Vicky gulps. "I don't even want to think about what such a quick response means!"

"Hey, what's going on?" You ask as you approach your wingmates.

"Vicky has a new plane!" Misono laughs heartily.

"What, really?" You blink.

"I-It's not as amazing as you think!" Vicky wails.

You round to corner to take a look inside.

"I think I'll stick with the Su-47 for now. Don't want too many people knowing it's up and running just yet." You wink.

"All right then, let us take to the skies, then!"

Thankfully, give the low alert level, it didn't take much to convince the base commander to greenlight a short patrol flight. Bandit declined to participate, delegating oversight to you. Guess he was still pretty busy gathering up all the intel he could.

Regardless, you, Misono, and Vicky were up in the air soon enough, floating over the tropical seas surrounding Fort Grays.

"So, where shall we head out to?" Misono asks.

Well, you could head out east towards the open water. Nice and wide with no obstacles whatsoever. However, going west inland provided a lot of obstacles that could provide some moderate challenge to navigate around. A good and relatively safe way to put a plane through its paces.

However, during the flight back to base, you notice Vicky's Gripen E stating to gain on your Su-47 and Misono's F-15. She must be putting in some serious speed if her relatively tiny single engine fighter was catching up to your heavy, twin engine fighters.

You briefly wonder how the hell Vicky was pulling so much speed out of her Gripen E and from where before remembering that you still had a race to win!

You push your throttle as far is it could go. Even if she was your friend, maybe even your best friend, you weren't just going to hand a win over to Vicky!

Your Su-47's engines roar as you dump more energy into the engines...

You put everything you have in your Su-47, and it responds, propelling forward as fast as its engines and the laws of physics allowed. Vicky's Gripen E and even Misono's F-15J are left in the dust as you blast over the strait separate Forty Grays from the rest of the continent.

"Sheesh, you always have to take challenges so seriously." Vicky groans. "You really hate losing at ANYTHING, don't you?"

"Hah, that sounds like the talk of a sore loser!" You chuckle smugly. "Maybe you just need a faster plane."

"The Gripen is already perfect!" Vicky retorts.

"I can't wait to see how you perform in the next mission!" Misono says with earnest anticipation.

With those words, you are left wondering just what exactly was next. Perhaps you'll finally make headway in exorcising Belka's lingering demons?

Well, you certainly hope so.

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is on Friday, so don't miss it!
