-------------------------------------------------------------
You are Gerrard Xavier, an Aspiring Duelist who ended up in the top 4 of the Kaibacorp Begginers Tournament. There, you were one of the first to encounter a new kind of a Duel Monster - the mysterious Xyz. Now you've entered the Medium Level tournament, determined to move on further and eventually duel the very best.
Since the new tournament started you got a GF (r-right?), witnessed legends duel and finally got to use your mysterious one-of-a-kind Synchro Monster, Void Ogre Dragon, who seems to be connected to the vampiric Xyz monsters currently appearing around the world.

Just a minute ago, you've managed to beat Rex Raptor in a duel. Your opponent did posses one of the mysterious Xyz monsters, however it didn't seem to come packaged with the skill required to win a children's card game.

After your Void Ogre Dragon pulverized your opponent's Grenosaurus, Rex seemed to have the vestiges of his conscious mind leave him and had to be lead away by Weevil. After witnessing this, you've decided to ask Jaden Yuki - who has so far mostly spectated - if he knows anything about the strange going ons in this tournament.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

”I could see a dark aura and a white light leave Grenosaurus when it was destroyed, but I don’t know what they were or how they got into the card. I know something bad’s up with these xyz and Void Ogre seems to fix it. Can you tell what’s going on?” You ask the friendly pro duelist before you. He keeps smiling at you warmly, with the subtle, knowing hint in his eye still remaining from before.

"It seems I've found someone I could compare notes with!" He responds, then goes to ready his duel disk. "But before we can do that, I'd rather get a handle on who you are as a person, and what better way to do that than a duel!" There's no doubt he lives up to his reputation it his eagerness at the very least. You don't dare to think long about accepting his challenge, especially not in front of your girlfriend.

"Get your game on!"

You choose Petting Zoo and you both draw 5 cards.

TURN 1
GERRARD 4000
JADEN 4000

"I'll start us off, then!"
"I'll use my spell card, E - Emergency Call! With it, I can search my deck for any Elemental Hero I want!"
"Here comes one of my favourites! I Normal Summon my good pal, Elemental Hero Stratos!"
"Thanks to Stratos right here, I can search my deck for another one of my friends and add it to my hand! I choose Elemental Hero Solid Soldier!"
"Next I will throw down 3 face downs, and pass the baton to you! Now show me what you're made of, pal!"

TURN 2
GERRARD 4000
JADEN 4000

You draw.

Your hand:
Nimble Momonga
Mine Mole
Valerifawn, Mystical Beast of the Forest
Mystical Space Typhoon
Pot of Duality

Your draw:
Egoistical Ape

Your plays?
>>
>>4129966
No rescue cat yet, time to stall.

Begin with Pot of Duality, since it’ll inform our plays. Then, we’ll probably set MST and Momonga.

>Sure thing! Since you’re setting up, I will too. I activate Pot of Duality!
>>
>>4130045
Then again, maybe I’m rushing things...
>>
>>4130054
We could also pitch valerifawn to special summon Egotistical ape, then summon mine mole and tune into Barkion. Maybe we should keep that in reserve for next turn when we’ve got more fodder in the grave and can maybe summon Beast too for some better lockdown? Keeps us from locking ourself out of Uniflora if Barkion gets destroyed too. So, tentatively I’ll say to just use pot of duality and set momonga for now. We don’t have the gas for an explosive play quite yet.

TURN 3
GERRARD 4000
JADEN 4000

"That's it? Ok then, draw!"
"First off, I Normal Summon my trusty pal, Elemental Hero Solid Soldier! With it's effect, I can put into play another friend of mine, so I'm firing up Elemental Hero Blazeman!"
"Thanks to Blazeman's effect, I can add a very special spell card, straight from my deck into my hand! Now, don't get too used to him, because he's not here to stay!"
"I activate the Spell Card I've just searched, Polymerization! With its effect, I fuse my Blazeman with my Stratos!" Jaden's eyes light up, bright with elation at the chance to summon one of his favourite monsters.
"I'm going to bring up the Heat! Appear, Elemental HERO Nova Master!"
"Battle! Go Nova Master!"

Elemental Hero Nova Master destroys Nimble Momonga.
"Nova Master's effect activates!"
Nimble Momonga's effect activates.

Do you want to chain any other cards or effects?

"When my Nimble Momonga is destroyed, I gain 1000 Life points, and what’s more, I get more Momongas!"

Gerrard 4000 -> 5000

Two more monsters appear on your field, both hidden in face down defense position. Jaden draws a card.

"That's more like it! Now, go, Solid Soldier!"
Gerrard 5000 -> 6000
"But we're just getting started! I reveal my face-down card, Mask Change! With it, my Elemental HERO Solid Soldier can assume and even stronger form!" The monster is engulfed within whining light emanating from its head, and before you know what happened, a tall, knightly figure stand in his place.
"Transform, Masked HERO Dian!
...but that's not all! Solid Soldier's effect activates! I special summon my Elemental HERO Stratos in defense position! Using its first effect, I destroy your face down card!"

With no other options, you activate your set Mystical Space Typhoon and target Jaden's last set card. You destroy Solemn Judgment.

"Charge, Dian!"
Gerrard 6000 -> 7000
"Dian's effect activates! I special summon Elemental HERO Shadow Mist from my deck, with her effect allowing me to search a copy of Mask Change into my hand! Attack, Shadow Mist!"
Gerrard 7000 -> 6000
"And finally, I activate Mask Change on my Shadow Mist! Transform, Masked HERO Dark Law, and attack!"
Gerrard 6000 -> 3600
"You sure gained yourself a lot of life there, but I hope your deck can dome something more! I throw down a face-down and pass the turn!"

TURN 4
GERRARD 3600
JADEN 4000

The onlsaught you've just been subjected to leaves you somewhat stunned. This one surely does live up to his reputation.

Your opponent's field:
Elemental HERO Nova Master
Masked HERO Dian
Masked HERO Dark Law
Elemental HERO Stratos (defense)
1x Set S/T card

Your field:
-

You move your hand to draw a card, unsure what could get you out of this situation...
"Meow!"
That's a start. You pull the top card of your deck, and for a second, you see sparks again. Jaden visibly notices, but doesn't comment on the fact, instead waiting on your next move.

Your hand:
Mine Mole
Valerifawn, Mystical Beast of the Forest
Egoistical Ape
Monster Reborn

Rescue Cat (pre-errata)

You start off by special summoning your Egoistical Ape as a level 3, by pitching Valerifawn to get banished with Dark Law's effect.
You Normal Summon Rescue Cat and - "Meow! - tribute it to special summon Kalantosa, Mystical Beast of the forest and another Valerifawn, Mystical Beast of the Forest. With your Kalantosa's effect, you target Jaden's set card.
"Not so fast! I activate my quick-play spell, the Flute of Summoning Kuriboh!"
Suddenly, a pillar of strong light momentarily erupts from his deck, just to disappear as quickly and leave only a small spot of fur as a mark of its passing.
"Say hello to my partner, Winged Kuriboh!"
The little angelic furball appears besides Jaden, winks at him, then moves to take his position on the field in defense position.

"Meow, Meow!" You hear, as soon as the Kuriboh stops on the field.
"Kuri, Kuri!" Jaden's monster responds to your own, and based on their tones you somehow internally know that this was a greeting. You decide to continue with the duel.
You pitch Mine Mole to Valerifawn and revive a Nimble Momonga. A new pillar of light appears.
You tune Egoistical Ape with Kalantosa.
"Small animals of the forest come together, calling upon a thundering Gallop! 3 plus 2 equals 5! I Synchro Summon Thunder Unicorn!"
With a shattering sound, your Unicorn breaks free from the pillar and gallops to take its place among your monsters.
You activate Thunder Unicorn's effect. Your beast's single horn gathers up static energy from all of your present beasts, then shoots a bolt at Dian, lowering its attack by 1500.
You tune Valerifawn with Nimble Momonga.
"From humble beginnings a great power can be obtained! 2 plus 2 equals 4! I synchro summon Armory Arm!"
You activate Armory Arm's effect and attach it to Thunder Unicorn.
"Battle! Charge with the speed of sound, Thunder Unicorn, and destroy Dian!"
Your beast attack. You gaze upon Jaden. For a second, you think he has a response, a way to turn around the situation, but in the end, he does nothing, still smiling at you.

Jaden 4000 -> 2100
"Armory Arm's effect activates! Burning Fist!

Jaden 2100 -> 0

A large portion of the onlookers is visibly surprised at your victory over a pro, although they don't voice it, probably not to be rude.

They any good? I haven't had a chance to check them out. Cause yeah sure they LOOK cute but look at this fucking guy. And his effect is fucking nuts;
"You can send this card and 1 Spell/Trap from your hand to the GY, then target 1 card on the field; send it to the GY. If this card is in your GY: You can send 1 Spell/Trap you control to the GY; add this card to your hand, then you can Special Summon 1 Zombie monster from your hand, and if you do, until the end of your opponent's turn, it gains 1000 ATK/DEF, also it cannot be destroyed by card effects. You can only use each effect of "Eldlich the Golden Lord" once per turn."

I'm pretty damn certain that applies to HIMSELF. The whole new support for zombies is amazing.

If it weren't for Ojamachads existing they'd be the best low-level beast lads in existence.
>>
The problem is finding a deck that'll fit both VOD and cat. Zombies are cool, but cat is useless and they tend to play nicest with zombies. Beasts are cool, but they have no dark tuners for VOD.
Eldlich is looking fun, but his spell/traps limit specials to zombies. The new lvl2 beasts are neat and might work, but both these archetypes aren't even out yet and thus might not even exist within quest canon.
>>
>>4133104
I see no reason why the new beast cards couldn't be incorporated, provided that good quality english pictures are given.

>>
>>4132867
Well, I think the first order of business is:
>Thank Rescue Cat, that was a clutch play right when we had our back against the wall.

Then

>Shake hands with Jaden and give him a “Good game.” Maybe mention DarkLaw had us in a bind, or that Armory Arm’s card design pays homage to Flame Wingman.

Then

>Ask Jaden about spirits. Can he understand them? With Rescue Cat and Winged Kuriboh we could only get an idea of their intentions. Void Ogre is much more talkative.

”Thanks, Rescue Cat, you’re always there when I need you most.” You decide to start by thanking your friendly spirit for saving your ass when you need him.
”Meow meow! >^.^< “ The cat seems to like being appreciated.
“You’ve got some great moves there, buddy!” You wanted to go talk to Jaden next, but he approached you instead while you were talking to your cat. He reaches out his hand. “ Syrus was right, you’re pretty good.” You share a handshake.
”Good game. Your Dark Law
“You’ve passed the test, since I really like the way you play but honestly,” He points just above your right shoulder. “it’d be enough if you just showed me your cute friend for me to trust you. Such a pure spirit wouldn’t bind itself to a bad person.” You turn your head, and to your surprise, you see an outline of Rescue Cat sitting on your shoulder. You don’t feel any weight, and could honestly miss it if Jaden didn’t point in its direction, but now that you see it seems to slowly become somewhat more visible. You wonder if the cat did this before and you just didn’t notice.
”Meow!”
”Kuri, Kuri!”
Winged Kuriboh’s silhouette once again appears besides Jaden, its form as firm as if it was corporeal. As it starts talking with your cat, and Jaden just laughs looking at them, you notice another shape behind him, however faint. You can barely make out an outline, but this one seems even taller than your opponent, with something that looks like great wings stretching to the sides. And, as abruptly as it appeared, it’s gone, leaving you with a weird feeling of unease, which seems very unfitting for something that happens around such a cheery person as Jaden Yuki. Somehow, you don’t feel like talking about that bigger shape.
”So… spirits, huh? You know much about them? Can you understand them? With Rescue Cat I can mostly get an idea of its intentions...”
“I’ve been talking to them most of my life, and yea I can understand them pretty well by now. I think it’s more a matter of practice. Most people can’t see them anyways, but since you do, it should come around naturally at some point. If you really open your heart to them and listen, with time you’ll be able to understand them. Well, some spirits are more eloquent than others…” Once, again, his expression changes for just a second, as if smiling at a joke that he knows you didn’t get.

(cont.)
>>
>>4135921
”Yeah, I know, my Void Ogre Dragon sometimes actually talks to me in my sleep.”
“…Does it?” His interest is visibly piqued. You decide to show him your ace monster up close. Jaden takes the dragon into his hand and examines it closely. You could swear that, while looking at VOD, Jaden’s eyes changed their colours for a moment, but you assume you were just seeing things and not mention anything. “I see, I see…” He mumbles a little, mostly to himself it seems. “How did you get this card?”
”It just… appeared to me one day. Same as these new Xyz monsters seem to be appearing to people out of nowhere now. Void Ogre is not the only monster I see in my dreams, but I don’t really recognize the others…” You tell him, deciding you might as well at this point. ”Do you have any idea what’s up with those new monsters that appear by themselves? Where do they come from, what they want?”
“Well, I arrived in the city early to investigate just that, and I did learn a couple things, but I’m still searching for more clues. I am already pretty sure that these new monsters aren’t exactly from around here… and that goes for both our world and “our” spirit world, if you catch my drift. I don’t know exactly what they want yet, but from what I can gather, these Xyz monsters are a bad influence on everyone – the players that use them and the ones they damage, but also on the other monsters spirits, both used to summon them and attacked by them. So I’ll make a wild guess and assume it’s nothing good.”
“Listen, wanna meet me here once again in the evening? We’d be able to compare notes more freely then, and since you seem to be involved in this already, you could probably help me a little. That and, well, I still wanted to get some duels while everyone’s around, and by talking to much right now I feel like we’ll missing out!” He gestures around you and, sure enough, most of Jaden’s friends have already found themselves fighting some challengers who want to test their skills against the stars. This is still a tournament, so it might be wise to get some points now and talk later.
While you look around, you get a little worried because you can’t see Wisteria, but finally you notice her, off to the side. She’s flushed red and looking down on her feet, smiling dumbly… while getting an autograph from Bastion Misawa. The pro, for his part, is displaying what looks to you like a shit eating grin and talking to your girlfriend, although you can’t hear what about from here. Somehow, this sight makes you momentarily extremely mad, and Jaden has to snap you back into reality.
“Hey, you there? How is it, are you gonna meet me later or do you have other plans?”

>Yea, sure…
>Sorry but I’ve something else to do tonight…

You decide to approach Wisteria and Bastion, curious to see what's all that about. Well, not only curious, but you at least try to be above simple jealousy.

As you approach them, Bastion is first to acknowledge your nearing presence. Wisteria, upon noticing you, is visibly embarassed by the whole situation and attempts introductions.
"Oh, Gerrie! Hi... Um, sorry for disappearing like that, I really wanted to get an autograph and ask some questions... Right, Gerrie, this is Bastion; Bastion, this is Gerrard..." Jealous as you might be right now, you take a second to mentally note how cute your girlfriend is.

"You're Gerrard, huh?" The other person in the conversation speaks up, and for some reason you find his tone unbearable. "Your girlfriend here mentioned you." He reaches out his hand towards you. "It seems like you're a decent duelist yourself, aren't you?"

"Very well, I'll gladly duel you." Wisteria looks really conflicted about something, and Bastion is talking directly to you, so that probably means you're going first. "Show me some of that skill your girlfriend told me about, Gerrard!"

"I'll make the first move. I normal summon Gozuki! With Gozuki's effect, I send my Necroworld Banshee from my deck to my graveyard!"
"With the lovely Necroworld Banshee's effect, I can play a Zombie World field card from my deck! With zombie World on the field, all monsters on it or in the graveyard are also considered Zombies!"
"As for the next order of business, I activate the spell card Graceful Charity, allowing me to draw 3 cards and discard 2!" He looks at his hand for just a second after drawing, the decision must have been obvious. "I discard my Mezuki and Il Blud! Additionally, I set two cards face-down, and end my turn!"

Well if somebody had said “he uses zombies in the manga, we should use zombie world because of that” I would have voted differently. As it stands, it’s not like Gerrard knew anyways, so we just gotta go with the flow. And no matter which deck we picked, it’d be a dramatic duel to goup against one of the decks we play.

Still, we’re set up to at least be able to stall a couple turns until we find a winning play.

>>
>>4141863
Chain Book of Moon targeting Il Blud.

It’ll keep him from using his effect, and next turn he’ll have to use another normal summon on it again, if we leave it up. We can use Giant Rat to absorb the hit from Gozuki and (chaining through another rat if he special summons again) leave us with a Rescue Cat on the board when we start our next turn.

Doomking is in the grave right now. Getting rid of the field spell before our standby prevents him from summoning it with its own effect.

I guess the question will become whether we can pop off through those defenses of his and win before he can get going again.

Considering Jaden called his heroes’s effects their “super powers”, are what liberties can we take when narrating our own gameplay? (Been watching GX on YouTube lately.)

A couple things about this play:

1: Mine mole draws a card when you synchro summon a beast with it, not when it's summoned.

2: Technically, his most recent facedown is Il Blud, so you should specify that you want to target his most recent facedown spell/trap.

Other than that, it all looks good to me!

We need to buy enough time to draw 2 cards. One to destroy Zombie World and the other to help build a board. Pretty sure the damage step exclusion on doomking would let us use Giant Rat into Momongas to stall... but that’d also eat up one of our draws...

Seeing no further plays to make, you pass.

“I draw!”
“I flip summon and then normal summon my Il Blud, in order to get its effect. Then, I use it to special summon my Nine-Tailed Fox from my graveyard. I play the Zombie World I’ve just redrawn, and I move to combat. Nine-Tailed Fox attacks directly!”
You stop combat by activating Negate Attack.
“An admirable effort, still resisting, but it is quite pointless! Based on what I already know of your deck, I can tell that, with your next Standby Phase, my victory should be assured. I pass.”

Turn 5
Gerrard 4000
Bastion 4000

You draw.

“During your Standby Phase, my Doomking Balerdoch special summons itself with its own effect. With this, my victory is pretty much certain. Good game, Gerrard.”

“Kick his butt, Gerrie!” You hear from behind you. It seems Wis doesn’t like this attitude. You look at the card you drew – it’s Graceful Charity, which you promptly activate.

It’s a long shot, but I think we need to use Leodrake to wall with its attack points until we can destroy zombie world.

>”It’s a long shot, but I still have one monster to try...”

-Discard Valerifawn and Green Baboon

-Summon lock cat (in face up defense if we can still do that, I forget)

-Lock Cat effect to summon Key Mouse in defense.

(Doom king probably activates here)

—If we still have key mouse, monster reborn Green Baboon and tune into Leodrake.

-Don’t attack with Leo, if he has a battle trap we’re screwed and if he doesn’t we can’t push much damage anyways and he has lots of ways to re-summon.

—If we don’t get left with Key Mouse, we’ll re-evaluate then.

Okay, how about instead we:
-Discard Baboon and

-Save Lock Cat in-hand for when we can use its effect

>>4161906
Oh yeah, I guess so. We don’t really have anything better to do than hope he doesn’t that I can tell.
>>
>>4161921
Unless you want to attack with the rat, then attack with the momonga to get two momongas set on the field?
>>
>>4161541
god damn that zombie world doomking combo is annoying

I don't think we even have a card in our deck to win after using Monster reborn-giant rat-momongas to stall.that is the last card we have that can bring out Rescue Cat with zombie world on the field and we only have the one.

This duel is over

Monster reborn giant rat in attack mode

Attack Il blud, Special summong momonga in attack mode, attack Il Blud with Momonga trigger effect on destruction to summon 2 momongas face down defense position.

3200 life points and 2 Momongas facedown on the field.

Or he will just use that facedown to stop our monster reborn. probably solemn judgement or something, yes im salty. no, I understand Bastion is the one person who would counter our deck after seeing us use it VS Jaden and know he should beat us
>>
>>4162018
Haha, yeah, unlike a lot of Yugioh we don’t have a pot of greed to make dramatic turnarounds with. Staple spells and traps can help (I imagine a mirror force or swords of revealing light or something her might help us somewhat) but they’re boring. There’s not much fast beast-draw, but a Merfae cat would help. Maybe eventually we’ll be able to use a nimble beaver to make a Cat Shark and stall. TG Hyper librarian wouldn’t have helped here.

Still, even if we’re not getting much direct progression in the tournament from this match, we can still ask him what packs he pulled cards like Doomking or Banshee from, which will improve our zombie deck.

Sorry about how diluted this one turned out to be. I seriously though that thanks to the quarantine I'd have more time to focus on this, but it turned out that the last stretch of time had a couple more surprises than I anticipated. Right now I'm just happy I managed to get this episode to some kind of workable conclusion within this thread, although I am obviously not content with the outcome.

Here's hoping for better planning, energy and time management skills in the future.

Also, here's another thanks to the people who are still putting up with my crap for whatever reason. As always, see to my twitter for any future updates.
