You are Gruiage Donn, a doannachd, which is what we would call a human, living in a small house within the village of Abhainn Thalmhaidh. It’s a cozy little village on the southern coast of Fearannmor, with a population mainly composed of doannachd. Fearannmor is a united continent, with an electoral monarchy situated in the capital, Baileorail. But for now, that isn’t important. What’s important is the goat-legged Aoir woman that just came crashing through your wall, waking you from your sleep in the early hours of the morning.

As you awaken to the sounds of your wall imploding and a guttural screech, your eyes fix themselves on the woman on the ground. She gets back on her feet before you can really process what’s going on, looks you in the eye, and says, “I could really use a hand right around now,” before running back out your new doorway, with a long flail in hand. Considering that there is something very angry out there, you decide to grab your trusty weapon that you keep next to your bed, for “self defense” purposes.

You grab your handy polearm and run outside to see the Aoir woman and an Allaidh moving in circles, each about to strike the other. You step on a thin piece of the hardwood that once made up a wall with a snap, and they both turn to look at you. Usually Allaidh, a medium-sized variety of Dearcuamhasach, don’t come this far out of the forest. You haven’t seen this woman before either. Odds are she was chased here.

The Allaidh quickly springs into action and charges at you, its teeth bared. You enter a defensive stance, and intercept it, landing a hit on its shoulder that makes the Allaidh jump back in pain. The Aoir, preparing to make a counterattack for the hit that threw her through your bedroom wall swings out with her flail, wrapping the Allaidh’s ankle in its chain, before pulling it to the ground. “Didn’t think I would break into someone’s house today,” she says with a strain in her voice, as she struggles to keep the reptile on the ground, “Sorry about that, mate.”

“You gonna pay for that?” you say as you move in and land a glancing strike on the back of the Allaidh’s neck. Its wild struggling allows it to free itself from the woman’s chain. You manage to score another hit, this time to the creature’s chest, which gets caught against its ribcage, holding it in place for just long enough that the woman can throw her flail around its neck. You manage to remove the pike, as the Allaidh snarls at you, and quickly make another strike, managing to pass between ribs and pierce an organ.

“I’m afraid I don’t have all that much on me, love. I could help with some repairs once we get. This. Over. With.” She responds. From some combination of internal damage from your polearm, or from oxygen deprivation caused by the woman’s chained flail, the Allaidh goes limp. Just to be safe, you stab it in the neck a few times.

Once you’re certain that the Dearcuamhasach is dead, you allow the Aoir woman to introduce herself, “I’m Dealbh Cloiche, I’m traveling east to Baileorail, and I might’ve made this beastie a wee bit angry when I tried to steal her eggs…”

“Why exactly were you trying to steal an Allaidh’s eggs?” you ask her.

“I may have run out of food a while back,” she sheepishly responds, “There was a nest just sitting out in the open... I didn’t think that the mother would be nearby or anything… I guess I’ve got plenty of Allaidh ta eat now, at least.”

“So are you able to do anything about my wall? I kind of need it to keep anything outside out.”

As you look around, you note that somehow, nobody woke up from the cacophony that occured on the outskirts of your village. That, or nobody really felt like getting up. Very kind of your fellow villagers.

“Well, I could try and work a little bit of magic? We Aoir know a little bit of magic.” Dealbh attempts to use what magic she knows to lift the boards of your wall back into place, but she fails to get them to hold in place. “Whoopsie, might’ve skipped out on magic practice one time too many as a lass. Tell ya what, The chief of Cridhecreadah heard that there’ll be a grand tourney hosted by the crown prince down in Baileorail that I’m, and that I needta find some sort of partner for it. Nobody back home was willing to team up with me, and I thought that I might be able to find someone on the way...”

“What’s in it for me?”

“Well, there’s a huge prize. Lotsa gold. Enough ta build a buncha new houses.”

...Are we in Not-Scotland? These names sound Gaelic.

I squished together some Scot's Gaelic for names, locations, and things.
Fearannmor isn't based on Scotland, though.

“Well, that sounds a whole lot better than having my walls knocked down. If I go with you, we split any prizes we win fifty-fifty.”

“Deal,” the Aoir woman responds. “I’ll try an’ get some cuts of meat from this Allaidh, you grab what you’ll need. Maybe some food while we’re at it. We’re running on a tight schedule, so be quick!”

You enter your house to throw together some essential equipment that you would need on your travels. Food, any important tools that might be needed, and of course your trusty pike. You quickly apply a sheet of weather-proofed linens to the wall hole, and briefly draft a letter to the baron that oversees the village, informing him of your absence for the considerable future.

You return outside to see Dealbh dragging the field-dressed Allaidh into the forest. “This should hold tha two a’ us over for a good while, doncha think?”

“I’d say so.”

After depositing the letter at the courier services building, you depart.

You’ve been following an old stone road to the east for about a day now, and you begin to take note of a repeating pattern in the wear of the setts in the cobblestone. You feel a slight twinge of suspicion that something strange is going on. You signal for Dealbh to stop.

“I’m feeling a little uneasy, you notice anything weird?”

“Fraid’ not.”

You quickly mark a tree with your knife.

“I think something is going on. Let’s keep moving, just to be safe.”

“I’ll stay alert.”

The two of you continue to follow the path for several minutes, before you see the tree you carved again.

“Something is up, Dealbh. Did we take a turn that looped back around by accident?”

“I don’t believe so. We didn’t take any turns. The road didn’t split.”

You take a look around the area.

As you scan the road and the forest surrounding, you notice something small dart along the edge of your vision.

“Something’s here, Dealbh!”

You stand back-to-back and search the vicinity. The object flies past the edge of your vision once more and you get a half-decent look at it.

“It’s some sort of insect!”

You finally manage to track the object with your eyes, revealing it to be, in fact, some sort of insect-like creature. Dealbh also manages to lock on to it, and gets into a battle stance.

“We smash it, yeah?”

“Sounds like a good idea, Dealbh.”

The Aoir readies her chain, and begins spinning it around in preparation. She strikes out at the creature, and only just barely misses.

“It’s movin’ too bloody fast!”

“Any idea as to what this thing is?”

“It looks like some sorta Sithiche, a faerie, but I didn’t think there were any this far south. Somethin’ seems off ‘bout this…”

“Attack again, with me.”

Dealbh swings her chain once more whilst you thrust towards the Sithiche with your spear. Both weapons land a hit, and the small insect falls to the ground.

“Never seen one quite like this…” Dealbh remarks. Before she can get a closer look, the carcass begins to crumble and blow away, and you feel a light sensation that coincides with a light rustling in the leaves of the forest. Before you can relax, you hear a faint buzzing in the distance, which is growing louder by the second. You and Dealbh both realize that the Sithiche the two of you killed hadn’t made any noise.
