You are Walter; a poor outcast from Cycad Town who is finally starting to hit his stride. Only a few days ago you were simply a brooding teen with a rough past and nothing going for him. This all changed when you decided the first step of your thousand-mile journey. Within four days, you caught your first two Pokémon, engaged in several battles, and made a deal which will allow you to become an official Pokémon Trainer. To say that you are no longer a brooding teen with a chip on his shoulder would be a lie, but now you have a way to turn your life around and reach new heights which you could have only dreamed of.

You awaken once again in your uncomfortable, yet familiar bed to the sound of your alarm clock going off. The sun is beaming through your shutters and casts odd shadows on your wall. One of these shadows belongs to Armo who somehow escaped from his Pokéball and has taken up residence in the hamper for a second time. Ignoring your partner’s antics, you walk over to the bathroom and take a shower for the first time in several days. While doing so you reflect on what Nathan said to you the day before. Though taking it easy and simply hanging around Cycad Town sounds much more inviting than roughing it out in nature and on the streets, you can’t help but feel as if doing so would lead you down the slippery slope of stagnation. You wrestle with the idea of taking a break while continuing on with your morning routine. After getting dressed, you sit down at the kitchen table with a large bowl of cereal and eye the clock displayed on the microwave. It is now 7:00 and if you hurried, you could still make it to school on time but you’re still on the fence about how to spend your day.

“I’ll be an official trainer in less than a week anyway,” you muse as you eat. “What do I need school for now anyway?”

Despite your rock solid teen level logic, you still have some lingering doubts.

>Take Armo and Monsoon with you

With your mind made up, your time finishing your breakfast and head back to your room once you are finished. Armo is right were you saw him almost an hour ago.

“Are you ready for another day of growth Armo?” You ask as you pull him out of the dirty laundry.

You only get a yawn in response as Armo curls up while still in your hands.

“You’re always on one extreme or the other aren’t you? Even I don’t do this much sitting around.”

Learning from last time, you recall Armo so that you won’t waste energy lugging him around and you place his ball into your bag right next to Monsoon’s ball. You sling your bag over your shoulders and exit the apartment, making sure to lock up before leaving. After leaving the building, you breathe in the fresh air and begin planning. Once again the world has become your sandbox and new possibilities await! For example, while you could go back to Route 3 and train or catch Pokémon. On the other hand, you could travel south and see what you can find on Route 2.

Feeling especially adventurous today, you decide to go to Route 2, the very route that connects Cycad Town to Seloras City. After a short walk, you find yourself on the edge of town once more, and as before, you find that Route 2 looks very similar to the others you’ve traveled on. This route seems to be a bit less tamed than Route 4 however, and vegetation dominated most of the footpath. Trees and bushes aren’t the only things that dominate the Route however. This place seems to be filled to the brim with Pokémon, and with every step you can hear the squeaks, calls, growls and cries of hundreds of Pokémon all engaging in various activities.

In stark contrast, you don’t see many trainers or humans in general walking around. If you were to guess, most of the trainers you saw the day before must have graduated on that day which explains why there were so many travelers. Just before the loneliness begins to eat away at you however, a wild Pokémon quickly intercepts your path and from the look of things, it doesn’t appreciate your presence very much.

As the enraged Mankey continues its approach, your hand wraps around Monsoon’s ball and in one swift motion, you whip it out of your bag and release Monsoon. In response, the pig monkey Pokémon pounds its fists together and slips into a fighting stance.

The two Pokémon begin to size each other up as they begin to circle each other. Since Mankey refuses to engage, you decide to take the fight to him.

“Let’s start with Wing Attack Monsoon.” You order.

The grounded duckling nods before taking off and charging at the Mankey, with the intent to slam it with his glowing wings. To your surprise, the furious Pokémon doesn’t stand its ground and counter with an attack of its own but instead runs off into the tree line, hooting loudly as it does. Despite this unexpected turn of events, Monsoon continues to give chase. You however are a bit less sure on the best course of action.

You follow Monsoon as the duckling continues to chase after Mankey. Unfortunately, the fleeing monkey is too fast and manages to outrun Monsoon’s attack. It disappears under some bushes and you can hear the rustling of leaves as it continues to run. You’re tempted to follow, but you don’t want to end up going out too far into the unknown again.

>Give up the chase and look for other Pokémon or trainers.

Shaking your head, you decide to abandon the chase and recall Monsoon. As you look back at the bushes, you realize that you have no available Pokéballs to use and unlike with Armo, trapping a Pokémon in your bag may not be an option. If you run into any interesting Pokémon the last thing you would want to be is caught unprepared. Not wanting to miss out on any opportunities in the future, you turn back and leave the way you came.

“I should’ve stocked up before going out. It’s not like I don’t have spending cash anymore.” You think as you begin making your return trip.

Thankfully, you didn’t get too far on Route 2, so the walk back to Cycad Town doesn’t take long. During your short trek, you begin to think about all of the other things you would need on your journey. Aside from Pokéballs, potions, food, and camping gear are absolutely necessary for any traveling trainer and all you have are the clothes on your back and a torn up bag. Shaking your head at how unprepared you truly are, you begin to make a mental list of things to buy before Nathan delivers his end of the bargain.

You’re so wrapped up in your thoughts that when you reach the edge of Cycad Town, you hardly even notice. What draws your attention instead, is some movement within the tall grass. Startled, you almost trip as you come to a halt to asses the moving grass. There could be many things in there but you have a self-imposed mission to carry out. The more time you spend aimlessly running around, the less time you have for proper training and battles. Still, what lies beyond could be a game changer and that fact causes you to hesitate.

>Keep moving and avoid the grass

You take one last look at the grass before deciding to carry on. The rest of your walk goes on without incident and a little while later, you find yourself at one of the towns Pokémarts. You step inside and make your way to the Pokéball section and make your selection.

Before you go to the counter to pay, you mull over the idea of buying some additional items. You know from what you learned in Trainer’s School that running back to a Pokémon Center in case of emergencies isn’t very convenient. You were told that in some cases, doing so may not even be possible. As you think things over, you try to suppress any thoughts of tragedy and shut out the various morbid scenarios that spring up in your mind.

After giving it some thought, you decide that it is better to be prepared and take a few potions in addition to the balls. After a quick transaction, you walk out of the store with your new items and place them in your bag. Now that you’re ready for a proper Pokémon catching expedition, you make the return trip back to Route 2. Just as before, there doesn’t seem to be anyone around. The Pokémon in the area still provide some ambient noise however and you soon adjust to hearing rustling and mysterious noises every few minutes. As you continue walking however, a new sound begins to draw your attention. From the sound of it, you would assume that you’re being followed. Attempting to look as casual as possible, you reach into your bag and pick out one of your balls. Unfortunately you don’t know for certain which one you picked out but much like the identity of your stalker, you will find out soon enough.

In one swift motion, you take out the ball and perform a quick spin to face whoever is following you. You then proceed to throw the ball to the ground in order to release whatever Pokémon you just so happened to grab. To your embarrassment, nothing occurs and the ball remains closed. To make matters worse, the figure who was following you is none other than Aaron, who is trying his best to stop himself from laughing.

Aaron composes himself and gives you a small wave. “Sorry for sneaking up on you like that.”

You in turn try to act natural and collect the empty ball. “You don’t need to worry about me you know. I appreciate it, but I can handle myself.”

“Well when I run into an old friend who vanishes as soon as he came, I get a bit concerned.” Aaron responds. “I guess you’re trying your hand at becoming a trainer again.”

“I’ve been doing a pretty good job so far all things considered. I already have two Pokémon and a few wins under my belt. I’ll admit, I occasionally bit off a little more than I could chew at times, but everything seems to be working out. ”

“Congratulations,” says Aaron clearly impressed. “So I guess that means you’re getting ready to become an licensed trainer. I’m looking forward to seeing you begin your journey. Who knows, I might even be the one to administer your test.”

“Yeah. Nothing is going to get in my way this time. I’m more than ready now!”

Aaron’s eyes widen slightly as if he just remembered something. “Walter, I hate to bring this up,” he begins, “how exactly are you going to pay to take the test? I know things have been pretty rough on your family lately.” From the sound of his voice you can tell he didn’t want to address this issue.

Your eyes dart slightly to the left as it fully dawns on you that you’re once again cheating your way through. Aaron looks pretty happy for you however, so you’re tempted to just tell him what he wants to hear. There’s no way to fail this time around after all.

“Don’t worry about it, I made a deal with one of my neighbors and I’m running errands for him now. I don’t get paid that much but I’ll have the money soon enough.” After your explanation, you mentally pat yourself on the back for how well that came out.

“Glad to hear it, you’ve really come along since we last talked.” Aaron’s previously careful tone vanishes completely. ”The road may seem long, especially since you’re just starting out but I guarantee that if you put in the work now, you’ll find that when you come across a real challenge, you’ll have enough within you to persevere.”

“I think those self-help books have really gone to your head.” You joke.

Aaron lets out a small chuckle in response. “Maybe just a little but I meant what I said. It’s my job to help up-and-coming trainers start their journeys off right and sometimes, what goes on up here matters more than battling or whatever you learned in a book.”

“Well you haven’t steered me wrong yet so I’ll keep that in mind.”

“That being said, what goes on out here is important too and there’s nothing better than a little training to stay sharp and build experience.” Aaron reaches for a Poké Ball on his belt and holds it up. “If you aren’t too busy, I’d like to see what you can do.”

Result(s): Failure

Dust begins to fly as Armo picks up speed and closes in on Bronzoe. At the last second however, Armo’s confusion throws him off, causing him to uncurl and skid across the ground along his face.
“Bronzor, keep the pressure on with Payback!”

Bronzor complies and once again summons the black aura before colliding with Armo. Your partner is looking a bit worn down but still seems as determined as ever and stands up once again.

“Your Pokémon’s defenses are impressive, there’s no doubt about that,” Aaron says, beginning to sound like he did back when he was your instructor. “But Bronzor’s defense is nothing to sneeze at either and your Sandshrew is going to have an even harder time chipping away at it while he’s confused.”

I don't think counter is the best move. Our defense is already very high and his attacks are poss weak so counter won't do much damage and there is the chance of housing confuse ray giving him a free turn.
>>
>>4156842
Counter does double of his damage, which is probably more than a resisted rollout. And we already got confused twice, it's a free turn regardless of what we do.
>>
>>4156868
His damage is lower than a resisted rollout, his offences are very low and we have a 2+ defense, a Defense Curl Rollout is stronger than a counter.
>>
I think we should have Armo wait off the confusion. Maybe prepare to strike once it wears off? So with that in mind, I say...

>Have Armo defend (Defense Curl, wait for confusion to end)
>>
>>4156906
You know Bronzor could just confuse him back, right?
>>
>>4156878
This is post is very confusing, I will write again. The damage of counter is lower than Rollout. Bronzor has piss poor attack and Arno has high defenses and 2+ any move which we can counter will do less damage than Rollout after defense curl. The damage of rollout after defense curl doubles coupled with the power of rollout doubling the more times we do it in sequence it's better to rollout than use counter.

Alright, so we're having a bit of a disagreement here. From the looks of things, the most popular options are

>Counter
>DC and R combo
>Wait out the confusion

Before we go forward, I want to clarify a few things. To start off, when I ran the calculations I found that Counter would do more damage against Bronzor than a 1st stage Rollout even when powered up by Defense Curl. This however is only the case if Bronzor goes for Payback once again or uses Tackle. Ultimately though, Counter will not do much more damage than Rollout in this scenario.

You give Aaron’s word some thought, but in spite of the odds, you refuse to waver. “This might not be the right way, but it’s the best way. Try it again Armo, fight through the confusion and we’ll win this!”

Armo shakes his head furiously in an attempt to shake off the disorientation caused by Bronzor’s initial attack. This movement soon turns to spasms and twitching until Armo is wildly thrashing at both himself and his surroundings.

Aaron’s expression is unreadable as he makes his next move. “Alright Bronzor, activate Wonder Room.”

Bronzor begins to glows and in turn so does the surrounding area. The landscape around you begins to resembles pink and purple flashing squares with the lights forming some sort of grid. Then, as if it never happened, the flashing squares vanish and everything returns back to normal.

At first you are confused by Aaron’s sudden deviation from is earlier strategy, but this confusion is soon replaced by a sense of nervousness. If you recall correctly, Wonder Room is a move which switches the Defense and Special Defense of every Pokémon on the field. It seems as if Aaron wants to end this war of attrition or at the very least, quicken its pace. As you attempt to piece together a strategy to combat this however, a clear answer shines through and offsets your worry with a bit of hope.

As you plan your next move a smile threatens to stretch across your face. You manage to keep a straight face however and stare down the field as if deep in thought.

“I didn’t think that throwing out Wonder Room would faze you this much Walter. Always remember, even the slightest hesitation can cost you a battle you otherwise would have won.” Aaron then gestures at Bronzor. “Let’s see what Payback can do now that his defense is lowered.”

The dark aura surrounds Bronzor yet again as it comes flying at Armo.

“Use Counter!” You call to Armo.

At the last second, Armo glows bright orange before coming into contact with Bronzor and the dark energy. Instead of falling this time, Armo is simply pushed back and remains on his feet. As soon as Armo comes to a halt, he leaps at Bronzor, giving it a swipe with his orange claws as he goes past it. Despite the new tricks from both sides however, neither attack seems to have done too much damage though Bronzor is finally starting to show some signs of damage.

“Well that was unexpected, you’re Sandshrew really is an impressive one.” Says Aaron before crossing his arms. “Unfortunately, Payback is in a weakened state if you don’t attack first so now we’re back at square one and like I said before, trying to outlast a Bronzor is a big mistake.”

“He’s right, “ you think to yourself. “Even with Counter, Armo’s taken too much damage to win like this. If I don’t think of something, he’ll go down long before Bronzor.”

Despite Aaron’s words, you know that using any physical attacks is out of the question. “Give it your best shot and use Water Gun!” You say as you point at Bronzor.

Monsoon increases his altitude and launches a powerful stream of water at Bronzor who is now looking even more worn down.

“Counter with Payback!” Calls Aaron.

Aided by the dark energy, Bronzor retaliates and flies directly into Monsoon, knocking him out of the air. Before he crashes however, the duckling is able to slow his descent and stops only a few feet above the ground. You immediately recognize that despite his miraculous mid-air recovery, Monsoon won’t be able to take as many attacks from Bronzor as Armo did.

“I need to find a way to stop Bronzor from using Payback somehow. If I can deal with that, I might have a chance.”

Armo emerges prepares himself for battle once more with his sturdy wall of an opponent.

“Alright, this is it, it’s all up to Armo now. Rollout is my only option, but it takes too long to power up. I’ll need to find some way to make it hit multiple times in one move.”

You wrack your brain, trying to find some alternate way to approach this. As you reflect on everything Armo has done so far in his battles, something clicks and the answer reveals itself.

As soon as all the pieces come together, you snap your fingers and address your partner. “Armo, dig underground and make a spherical burrow as fast as you can! We aren’t done with Rollout yet!”

Armo nods before quickly disappearing under the soil. You can feel the ground beneath your feet shifting ever so slightly as Armo gets to work.

Aaron for his part looks puzzled but keeps a cool head. “Stay on your guard Bronzor and be prepared to use Confusion as soon as he emerges.”

As you sit and wait, an awkward lull in the battle make itself known. With no other options everyone waits for Armo to finish as the ground becomes more uneven as well as unstable. After a while, you feel something sharp poking the bottom of your shoe, likely Armo signaling that his work is done. Continuing the silent conversation, you tap your foot four times while attempting to look as bored as possible. You receive another poke and you feel the ground shift once more as Armo leaves you. Seconds later, the curled up form of Armo bursts from the dirt and flies right past Bronzor. Before it can react to Armo’s sudden appearance however, he lands right on top of it, sending the both of them underground.

“Don’t let up!” You call towards the newly formed hole.

Once again, an awkward silence washes over the field, though the sound of a dull thud occasionally makes its way from underground. The silence is soon interrupted however, when Armo bursts from the ground along with several large rocks in a spectacular display before crashing back down.. Upon landing, Armo uncurls and the two of you as well as Aaron, survey the damage. The grass has been completely overturned and torn up but what really draws your attention is the large crater which houses an unconscious Bronzor as well as several large rocks.

“Alright!” You exclaim as you scoop up Armo and hold him over your head. The armored rodent gives you his three digit thumbs up in response.

The way I see it, Armo uses Scratch to aid him while digging in battle since he doesn't know dig yet. >>Forget Counter

Spin works almosst as Counter, if we use it before the adversary atack, doesnt it?
>>
>>4163185
Armo won't lose his ability to scratch but it won't be an actual move. Basic things like Growl, Tail Whip, Tackle, Scratch etc. can still be done even if they aren't actually a part of a Pokémon's move set anymore. However, their power will be halved and/or their effects will be downgraded. For example, if you were to have Armo forget Scratch and later attempted to have Armo swipe at something, the power behind the move will be 20 instead of 40.

>>4163231
Rapid Spin can be used as an improvised counter or parry, but the effect will be nowhere near as devastating as actually using Counter in most situations. In the same way, the two can't be compared mechanically. When Counter is selected, all you have to do is sit back and watch. If you were to elect Rapid Spin with the intent of using it as a counter or parry however, Armo would need to be fast enough to pull it off at the right moment and you would have to win a clash. If you were to simply use Rapid Spin as an attack however, the process will be as straightforward as using Scratch or Rollout. I should also note that using Rapid Spin increases a Pokémon's Speed sat by one stage.

Aaron nods and takes out Bronzor’s ball, recalling it with a red flash of light. “There’s the Walter I know. If I’m being honest, I was kind of worried about you.”

“What good is a battle without a grand finale?” You ask as you walk over to Aaron with Armo riding on your back. “Besides, you didn’t try to use Confusion until the very end.”

“Two great minds think alike I guess.” Replies Aaron with a grin. “You’re definitely ready for the real thing, there’s no doubt about that.”

“You had doubts?” You ask with a playful tone.

“Don’t get too ahead of yourself. You still seem to favor power above all else.”

You shrug. “Well you don’t have much choice when dealing with something like a Bronzor at my level.”

“I just bought some new Pokéballs from the store a while ago and I was looking for some Pokémon to catch around here.”

“I think I can help you with that. There’s a spot not too far from here where you can catch a few special Pokémon. I don’t have any revives with me since I didn’t plan on coming out here today but if you stick with me, you should have a new member on your team before the day is out.”

You return Armo to his ball and put it back into your bag. “Lead the way.”

The two of you walk along the road for a bit before going off the beaten path and making your way through the untamed sections of Route 2. The trip takes a few hours, but eventually, you find yourself staring across a rather large field with a few small ponds doting the area. The main attraction however, is a rather large hill with a small, dilapidated structure sitting on top of it.

“Well this is a nice change,” you comment as you observe your surroundings. “Rotes 2,3, and 4 have nothing on this place.”

“Don’t get too attached, there’s something really odd about place.” Aaron warns.

“Well you’re the one that brought me here, it can’t be that dangerous if you showed it to me.”

“I didn’t say it was dangerous,” says Aaron shaking his head. “I said it was odd. The place seems to rearrange itself every few weeks but what makes it even stranger is the fact that this place wasn’t even here several months ago. I come out here every so often, and every time I do something is always out of place.”

You come to a halt and shoot Aaron a quizzical look. “I’m not saying I don’t believe you, but that building on top of the hill looks ancient. Besides, I’ve never heard of hills and ponds materializing out of nowhere.”

“I’m not going to pretend as if I understand this place either, but as long as we stick together we should be fine. Now let’s go find a Pokémon for you to catch, it’s getting late or at least it will be by the time we get back.”

“Keep going Armo! Don’t let it get away!”

Armo continues to spin as he chases the fleeing Litleo but this seems to make things much easier for the flaming cub as it jukes left and cuts through the grass.

“Oh come on! That’s the second time today.” You exclaim as the tall grass goes up in flames.

“At least there’s no chance of you losing it while it’s leaving a trail of burning grass.” Aaron comments as he watches the Litleo retreat. “Catching it, on the other hand might be harder.”

>Chase after Litleo

“You’re not getting off that easy!” You call out in the direction where Litleo ran before chasing after it.

Armo manages to jump and grab onto your bag as you give chase with Aaron following close behind. You follow the burning path that Litleo left behind and eventually you manage to spot it once again. This time however, it isn’t alone and is accompanied by three more Litleos who appear to have been setting up for an ambush.

“Clever girl.” Mutters Aaron as he takes a Great Ball from his belt. “Would it be fair to say that I should get involved now?”

“Do you even have to ask?” You question as Armo drops from your bag and stands beside you. “Just leave the original to us.”

Aaron tosses the Great Ball to his other hand and nods. “It’s time for some exercise Zangoose!”

Upon witnessing the arrival of the fearsome looking Zangoose, the four Litleos surround you and begin to close in.

Leaving the new arrivals to Aaron and Zangoose, you turn your attention to the sneaky Litleo. Before you can settle on a strategy, she leaps head-first into Armo once again, pushing him back.

“Armo, use Rapid Spin again.”

Armo repeats his performance from his first time using Rapid Spin and returns the favor to Litleo. He then bounces off of her head and lands close to you once more. His movements now seem a bit quicker than they were a few minutes ago.

Meanwhile, Zangoose makes short work of the second Litleo with Crush Claw. The third Litleo uses Leer in an attempt to give the group a fighting chance while the fourth simply covers up, predicting an attack that never came.

Despite witnessing one of their own being dealt with in one vicious strike, the group tightens up and each one of them lets out a defiant growl.

You’re right, Ground is just super effective on fire but it isn’t resistant to it. Either way, headbutt will hurt much more than ember and rapid spin won’t give us the win fast enough. If we use counter know we could catch Litleo on the next turn.

There is nothing stopping us from going after a ghost mon regardless of the outcome, anyway we have a limited number of balls, if the first one doesn't caught it then just faint her and we move on.

I asked the very same question though for completely different reasons. Like you said here >>4165875 the tower seems like it will have some good stuff. It's never a bad thing to to have a diverse team, the battle against bronze would went way better if we had a fire type and we never know what other mons mons the trainers will have, strategy and thinking outside the box will only get us so far so having a diverse team will be very helpful and even if the mon start making trouble we can just box, release her or even try to trade her.

Though the fight overall is looking good for you, Armo’s defenses aren’t holding up as well against the Litleo as you initially thought they would. Though you have no doubt that Zangoose would be able to handle things if Armo went down, you don’t plan on letting that happen.

“Get ready with Counter!” You instruct Armo as Litleo eyes the both of you with malice.

Armo begins to glow with Counter’s orange aura and stands firm, waiting for another attack. To his and your surprise however, Litleo restrains herself this time around and instead glows red as she builds up her power.

While she powers up, you take a quick glance behind you and see that Zangoose downed another one and is currently shrugging off a Headbutt attack from the last Litleo standing before him.

“Things are just about wrapped up on my end.” Says Aaron while keeping his eyes on the battle. “How are you guys coming along?”

“We’re fine. This should be over in one last move.” You respond as you turn back towards Armo and Litleo.

Though you initially thought of using Counter once again, but then several new ideas flood your mind. You decide to simply go for the simplest approach before you get sucked into another drawn out argument with yourself.

You shake your head and address Armo once more. “Try using Rapid Spin again!”

Armo comes after Litleo once again as he hurls his curled up form towards her. In response, the burning feline spits out a swirling mass of flames as Armo quickly approaches. The flames do little to deter him however, and once again Litleo takes a blow to the head. Now Armo is definitely much faster than he was before.

“One move, right?” Says Aaron as he appears behind you.

You do your best not to jump at his sudden appearance. “I just decided to change strategies. It’s not like this kitten is an issue.”

Aaron smiles in response. “Oh is that all?”

“Nothing’s keeping me from getting to the top of that hill. Just sit back and watch!”

“Step back Armo, I’ve got this!” You say as you grab a Pokéball from your tattered bag.

You throw the ball directly at Litleo and she is immediately trapped inside in a flash of light. The Poké Ball falls to the ground and rattles around for a few seconds. The struggle lasts a bit longer than usual, but eventually, the Poké Ball proves its superiority and announces its success with a click.

“Wow, I’m already at three. I honestly expected this team building thing to be much harder.” You comment as you walk over to Litleo’s ball and place it in your bag.

“Trust me when I say that this is nowhere near as easy as you made it look. Some Pokémon are much more harder to catch than others but I guess you’ll find that out sooner or later.” Aaron pauses to stretch his legs and recall Zangoose who has been giving the three unconscious Litleos a death glare for the past few minutes. “You still want to check out that building right?”

Armo once again jumps onto your bag and climbs inside to enjoy the ride while you do the legwork. As you and Aaron make your way to the hill, you busy yourself with thinking of a list of names for your newly caught Pokémon. Eventually, you and Aaron make it to the base of the hill and you have finally selected a name.

“It looked a lot smaller when we first got here didn’t it.” You say as put one foot on the hill.

“You can say that again.” Aaron nods as you both cram your necks in order to see the top. “There’s no point in turning back now though so let’s pick up the pace.”

The two of you begin the climb as Armo takes a whiff of the surrounding air. He looks to be somewhat bothered by something, but it seems like even he doesn’t know what it is. The amount of Pokémon you see diminishes the higher up you go and the ground seems to shift under your feet every few seconds. Eventually, both you and Aaron become as uneasy as Armo and you stop to come up with a plan of action.

Aaron takes a look at the sky before checking his watch “I think we should put a hold on all of the sightseeing for now and investigate the building as quickly as possible.” He explains as he takes out an Ultra Ball. “My Salamence can only carry one of us at a time so we’ll have to take two trips. Do you want to be on the first or the second?”

“I’ll scout ahead,” you offer as Aaron releases Salamence.

Aaron nods and turns to the newly emerged dragon. “Fly Walter to the top and look for anything suspicious before leaving him.”

Wasting no time, you climb on top of Salamence who immediately spreads his wings as soon as you wrap your arms around his neck. Within seconds, you find yourself high in the air and shiver as the wind chill batters all three of you. It takes everything you have to hang on as the sheer speed of Salemence threatens to throw you off. Unsurprisingly, Armo does not enjoy being so high in the air and clings onto your bag for dear life as Salamence ascends even further. Thankfully, the ride doesn’t last very long and you soon find yourself at the very top of the hill. As instructed, the dragon scans the area for any trouble for a few seconds before letting out a wisp of smoke and motioning for you to get off with his head. Thankful to be on solid ground once again, you give the dragon a wave as he leaps off of the hill to pick up Aaron.

Having nothing better to do, you approach the mysterious building which still manages to be imposing despite its decrepit state. The building resembles an odd mix or a temple and a fortress with odd markings carved all over the outer walls.

“Now that I'm seeing it up close, calling this place ancient seems like an understatement.” You say to yourself as you gaze upon the crumbling structure. “Any idea of what could be inside Armo?”

Your partner pokes his head out of your bag and gives the structure a once over before climbing out and jumping down to the ground. Upon landing, he gives the air another whiff and kicks at the grass below.

“You still haven’t figured out what’s bothering you, huh? I guess there’s only one way to find out what’s really going on with this place.”

Armo nods and points at towards the entrance before kicking at the grass one last time.

“I like the way you think.” You say as you pick up Armo once again and walk towards the entrance.

The entrance is simply one large stone archway with more odd symbols carved into it. It is covered in dirt, moss, and even a few roots have started to form around it. As you step inside the light from the outside begins to fade and is replaced the darkness of the shadows with only the cracks in the walls providing any source of illumination. As soon as you enter the foyer, you are forced to make your way through several inches of dust and other unidentifiable debris. On occasion you walk face first into large, thick spider webs and sometimes you trip on loose tiles or rocks that seem to have been moved recently. By now, it has become obvious that there are a few Pokémon lurking here and with every step, you feel as if something is about to jump out at you. The buzzing and skittering noises along with the sounds are breathing are not helping matters. Every so often the sounds of a dull hum also grabs your attention and then ends abruptly, causing the entire structure to contort as if it were alive.

“I’m definitely buying a flashlight when we get back.” You say to yourself as you almost lose your footing once more. “Honestly, as scary as this all looks and sounds, having to wait this long for something to happen really takes away from the haunting effect.” At this point you are unable to see Armo, but you can already imagine him rolling his eyes at your commentary.

Suddenly, you hear the sound of something cutting through the air and you are knocked to the ground before you can react. Both Armo and your assortment of Pokéballs spill out of your bag as you land in the dirt and roll to a halt. Your casual attitude is quickly erased as you scramble to both stand, identify your attacker, and find a way to defend yourself.

As the ball tumbles through the air, Monsoon’s unconscious form is ejected from the ball in a flash of light which briefly illuminates the room. The room the falls back into darkness as the Gastly begins to cackle loudly. Then without warning, it projects blue waves of light from its eyes at you. Within seconds you feel the effects of Hypnosis overcoming you as your eyelids become heavy.

As your strength leaves you, your hand comes across another one of your scattered Pokéballs. Hoping against all odds, you toss the ball and to your relief Sephira arrives on the scene. Unsurprisingly, she isn’t too happy to see you but before she has the chance to express her anger towards you, Gastly attempts to put her to sleep as well. You don’t get to see what becomes of this psychic attack however, as the last thing you see before drifting off is the blue light emanating from Gastly’s eyes.

When you wake up the first thing you notice is Armo standing over you. The next thing you notice is that you can actually see where you are due to the various cracked walls surrounding you. To your disappointment, you realize that you are in another section of this ancient structure with no idea where you are in relation to the entrance.

“Not that I don’t appreciate your help, but do you have any idea where we are or at least how to get back outside?” You inquire as you sit up and face Armo.

Your armored companion nods and drags your bag towards you and waits for you to stand. You quickly rummage through your bag and find that all of your belongings are there.

“Seriously though, thanks. I don’t know what I’d do without you. By the way, where’s Monsoon and Serphira? The last thing I did before falling asleep was send them out.”

Armo gives you a look of confusion for a moment upon hearing the name of your newly caught Litleo before shrugging and pointing at your bag.

You return Armo’s look before putting two and two together. “You really know your way around a Pokéball, don’t you? I guess I can thank Sephira later, right now we need to come up with a plan before we get taken by surprise again.”

As your mind races in an attempt to come up with a plan, your thoughts are interrupted as you hear the sound of multiple explosions going off as well as high pitched shrieks and shouting. Adding to the chaos, the structure begins to shift once more and the entire room around you contorts and rearranges itself as the madness outside continues.

“It’s a monster house out there!” You think to yourself. “I really should’ve just taken it easy today.”

“Let’s go Armo. I think that might be Aaron out there.” You say as you secure your bag and stand up.

Armo motions for you to follow him before taking off on all fours into the darkness. You follow him into a long hallway and do your best to keep up with him despite the lack of visibility. Thankfully, small streams of light occasionally illuminate the various dusty corridors and rooms that you find yourself in as you follow Armo. From what you can gleam, this place is more like a labyrinth than anything else with its many twists, turns, false doors, and hallways that seem to lead to nowhere. Everything about the layout of this place is haphazard and some of the architecture would be considered impossible by anyone who had time to take a good look at it. By your count, you’ve been through over a dozen rooms and corridors by now and yet all of them look exactly the same.

“There’s no way Armo dragged me through all of this.” You think to yourself as you make your way down a large flight of steps. “But if that’s the case, how did I get all the way over here?”

As you attempt to piece together this strange puzzle and keep up with Armo’s pace, a Honedge sails right by your head before crashing into the wall beside you. This near death experience causes you to stop in your tracks and evaluate your surroundings. The room is large and circular with parts of the ceiling caved in. In the center of the room is Zangoose, who is currently fighting off a large group of Pokémon. To the left is another corridor which lights up every often as the sound of roaring echoes across the labyrinth. Turning your attention back to Zangoose, you see that while he is holding his own, he is greatly outnumbered and steadily losing ground as various attacks are hurled at him.

Wasting no time, you rummage through your bag to find Sephira’s ball and send her out. Armo, knowing that another fight is imminent, uses Defense Curl in order to prepare for the upcoming brawl. You toss the ball into the air and Sephira emerges in a flash of light and a roar which echoes off of the walls. As soon as Sephira sees Armo, she narrows her eyes and launches a stream of flames that circle and entrap him.

“We don’t have time for this Sephira,” you call out to the seething cub. “We need to work together if we’re ever going to make it out of here.”

Sephira spits a few embers your way as a show of contempt before turning to face the large crowd ganging up on Zangoose. By this point, some members of the crowd have turned their attention to you and your group and are now making their way towards you.

“Well the element of surprise is off the table now and holding off all of these Pokémon is out of the question. I better think of something quick!”

While you are devising a plan, Armo frees himself from the flames, using Rapid Spin to disperse them. Despite the amount of energy he’s displayed in the last few minutes, you can tell that he won’t be able to take too much abuse. Between his battles with Sephira and whatever he happened to come across while you were asleep, he has been worn down and will soon be running on fumes if he isn’t already. For her part, Sephira seems to be in much better shape but she’s been through at least two battles as well.

>Attack the left flank (Sableye, Venipede, Elgyem, and Honedge)

A quick scan of the room reveals that there are two groups in particular coming after you. These groups have broken from the main force attacking Zangoose and have set their sights on you and your partners. The group on the right consists of a Duskull, Joltik, Meditite, and a Pawniard. On the other side of the room is a group consisting of a Sableye, Venipede, Elgyem, and a Honedge. As the two groups begin their menacing approach, you rapidly shift your gaze on group and the other before making your decision.

Keeping your eyes on the advancing horde, you address your new companion. “Sephira, I know we aren’t exactly on good terms at the moment but we can’t take them on without your help. If you focus on the group on the right while Armo and I focus on the left, we might be able to save Zangoose and make it out of here alive.”

Sephira looks almost insulted by the insinuation that she has any interest in helping Zangoose after what he did to her friends and spits another wave of embers at you.

“Ok, maybe saving Zangoose isn’t on your to do list but my point still stands.” You say, dodging the embers as Armo gives her an exasperated glare.

In response, Sephira raises herself to her full height and surrounds herself with a powerful red aura before letting out a roar and heaping flames upon the right flank.

Nodding in approval, you turn to Armo. “Alright, I have a plan for us but I’m not sure if either of them will work.”

This does little to relieve Armo, who once again uses Defense Curl.

“Well no one said this would be easy. Here’s what I’m thinking….”

I'm choosing this option because Venipede is pretty vulnerable, and could be taken out easily, not because I expect to take them all out. Being poisoned is probably not what we want right now.

Upon hearing your proposal, Armo perks up. You get the sense appears that he really enjoyed the stunt he pulled during the battle with Bronzor and is excited to try out your latest idea.

“Ok, here’s the plan.” You begin, happy to see Armo’s spirit return. “Rollout doubles in power every time you hit something with. I’m just taking a guess here, but if you were to use Rollout on the walls and bounce from one to the other, you might be able to build up enough power to knock these guys out in one strike. Remember, you can only get five hits in when using Rollout, so after you cross the room two times you have to make a turn and target them.”

After taking a moment to process what you’ve told him, Armo give you a thumbs up and curls into his ball form. He spins in place for a few seconds before taking off and ramming into the wall beside you at full speed before bouncing off of it and rolling in the opposite direction. As Armo makes his way to the other wall, the hostile group of Pokémon comes to a halt and watches Armo’s antics. Some look on with amusement and curiosity, while others eye Armo with unreadable expressions. This all changes however, once Armo makes his third collision with a wall. As he crosses the room for a second time, loose bit of stone and dust begin to fly everywhere. The power that Armo possess has now become self evident and some of your would-be assailants begin to back up in fear. Even a few of the Pokémon attacking Zangoose put a hold on their assault to watch the display. After his fourth collision, Armo’s body begins to cut through the very floor below him as the destructive power behind him increases exponentially.

“Now Armo! Hit them with everything you’ve got!” You call out, encouraging the small juggernaut.

Armo then turns, producing a sound reminiscent of nails on a chalkboard as large stones are displaced in his wake. A few of the smarter Pokémon attempt to escape through various methods but unbeknownst to them, their window of opportunity had been shut long ago. With a deafening crash, Armo plows into and through the group of wild Pokémon, sending some flying and outright running over others. He doesn’t stop there however, and inadvertently continues his rampage, knocking out several other Pokémon as well before skidding to a halt and running into another wall, embedding himself in it in the process.

As you survey the damage caused by Armo’s fully charged Rollout, you notice that a lone Honedge is still standing albeit shakily, in stark contrast to its companions who are strewn around the room in various locations. Recognizing you as the mastermind behind this attack, it begins floating towards you and swinging itself menacingly in your direction. Backing away, it dawns on you that all of the Pokémon aligned with you are far too occupied at the moment to defend you from this ghostly, unyielding sword.

>Attempt to recall Armo to free him from the wall

As you continue your slow but steady retreat, you take out Armo’s ball and point it at him before activating the ball’s recall function. A red beam of light shoots out of the ball and strikes Armo, who is still struggling to remove himself from the thick wall. Armo then becomes one with the light and vanishes as it is retracted back into the ball, leaving a Sandshrew shaped imprint in the wall. As soon as Armo is back in the Pokéball, you attempt to send him out once again. The Honedge has other plans however and smacks your hand with the flat side of its body, knocking Armo’s ball to the ground. Before you can even consider retrieving it, the phantasmal blade swings itself horizontally at your chest, prompting you to dodge out of the way and put some distance between it and yourself. Undeterred, it strikes once again, this time attempting to skewer you, but you move out of its way once again with relative ease.

After another failed attempt, Honedge orients itself in the upright position before engulfing itself in a flash of light. You hardly have any time to figure what has occurred before it swings itself at you at a much higher speed than it had moments earlier. The strikes come faster now, with no pauses in between each slash and swipe. Even with its increased mobility you are still able to keep up with it due to its naturally low speed. As this dance continues, you can tell that the sword is becoming impatient with you and shines brightly once again. The sword has now become much faster than you and attempts to bisect you with a diagonal slice which you barely dodge by rolling out of the way, putting yourself behind the blade.

The next few seconds feel like hours as you reach into your bag to withdraw an empty Poké Ball. After finishing its swing, Honedge pivots towards your crouching form right as you take the ball in your hand and bring it out. The ghostly blade takes another swing at you and in response, you put the ball in its path right before the sword severs your neck. Honedge is immediately pulled into the ball and as usual, the ball thrashes wildly in your hand. After a while the struggle ends and once again, the mighty Poké Ball has asserted its dominance. As soon as you hear the familiar click of a successful capture, you flop down on your back in both relief and exhaustion. For the next few moments you break out in a cold sweat as the adrenaline rush has left you both in shock and drained. This day was far from easy.

After lying down on the dusty, jagged ground for a while, you prop yourself up on a nearby wall and turn your attention to Zangoose and Sephira who have managed to defeat or chase off the last of the wild Pokémon. Zangoose notices you sitting against the wall and drags himself across the room to join you while Sephira claws at a few of the downed Pokémon out of curiosity. For the next few minutes the room is filled with an eerie silence as dust begins to pour from the ceiling. Suddenly, the room begins to shift and rotate at sickening speeds. Before you can do anything, the floor falls out from under you as well as everyone present in the room. Your stomach drops along with the rest of you as an empty well of black engulfs your entire being and shuts off all senses of direction, time, and equilibrium. Eventually, you come out of the other side of the void screaming as the ground below you quickly approaches. Operating on pure instinct, you stick your arms out in order to break your fall and the last thing you feel is a haunting sense of both completion and desolation.

You wake up feeling panicked, and confused as you find yourself in a dark room with a large hanging lamp in its center and a wide table sitting in front of you. As the memories from earlier surface, you immediately raise your arms to find them looking relatively normal considering the circumstances. You are surprised to feel that aside from a few scrapes and bruises, your body is otherwise fine despite the strange phenomenon it had endured earlier. Another surprise comes when you attempt to move your legs only to find them chained to a heavy bolted steel chair. Your eyes widen and you attempt to struggle until you quickly tire yourself out. Turning your head, you see a dark two way mirror nestled into the wall to your right.

“What am I doing here?” You ask yourself as you attempt to get your breathing under control. “Where is this place and where are Aaron, Armo and the others?” As dozens of questions bounce around in your head, you realize that this room has a similar feeling to the labyrinth.

>Call out for someone

“Hello?” You call out shakily as you take another look around the room. “Is anybody watching me? I have no idea what’s going on here and I’m very confused.”

Your calls go unanswered for what seems like an eternity. The room is so quiet that you can hear your heart beating in your chest along with any small movements you make. Eventually you get used to the silence along the mysterious atmosphere and attempt to make yourself comfortable in your chair. Suddenly, a light turns on from behind the mirror and you turn to see three men having a conversation. Though you can only see them as featureless silhouettes, it is obvious that two of the men are arguing. They are soon interrupted by the third figure who holds up his hand to silence them. The figure then grabs and unidentifiable object and moves out of your field of view.

After a few more minutes of waiting, the light from the lamp is increased as an audible hum pervades the room. Thanks to this extra light, you are able to see across the room as one of the men walks through a large door which he does not bother to close. He is dressed in a large brown raincoat and a grey hat.

“So you must be Walter.” Says the man as he stares at you with piercing grey eyes. “My name is Lance Harvey, I’m a consultant and I’m here to deal with you and your…..situation.”

“What situation are you referring to?” You ask.

Lance takes off his hat to reveal a large amount of silver slicked back hair and holds his hat above his head. With his other hand, he retrieves a tablet from his coat and types out a quick message. He then drops his hat, yet it remains in the air as if supported by some unseen force or structure. “What you just witnessed,” he begins, “do you think you were supposed to see that?”

“I know a rhetorical question when I hear one.” You answer.

“Good, then you understand one variable in this rather large equation. If the reports are correct, you and a companion entered this restricted area over fifty-three hours ago. Now you understand another variable, and in return, I’d like you to explain to me what you saw and felt during the thirty-seven hours you were awake for now that you are better able to contextualize your experience.”

cont.
>>
>>4172069
You take a moment to process what you’ve just heard. “Who exactly are you working for?”

Lance smiles and adjusts his coat. “I’m glad you asked but not for the reasons that you may think. If you’re concerned about the legality of this interaction, I want to inform you that while I am not a member of law enforcement, the government, or the League, I am well within my rights to question you. Authority is often a simple a matter of numbers and leverage. At this moment, you and you companions have neither of those. You may think that sounds harsh, but I want you to know that I’ve practically rolled out the red carpet for you. The organization that currently accepts my services would take a much more direct approach and the less said about their methods, the better.”

“Why interrogate me if you know so much about what I’ve been doing?”

Once again Lance smiles and folds his hands in a manner that reminds you of Nathan. “Honestly, this is simply a matter of professional pride. On paper this incident has already been dealt with but I would like to have the firmest grasp possible over this situation. I’m not paid to simply take what I’m told or what I’ve read at face value, I must be as thorough as possible.”

“So what’s going to happen to me if everything is already ‘dealt with’?” You inquire as your tone becomes as cold and even as your interrogator.

“I’ve been given…special privileges as they relate to your case. If you answer my questions, I would be willing to let you leave unharmed. As an added bonus, you don’t even need to be truthful, I’ll accept anything you have to tell me.”

“Where do you want me to start?”

The consultant sits down on an unseen chair and produces a small notepad and a pen from his coat. “I would prefer if you started from a year ago up until this point, but for the sake of time you can start with what you would consider to be last night.”

After giving Lance a surprisingly brief summarization of the events of what you perceive to be the last two days, he begins to question you further. He asks about your connections to each and every name you mentioned during your story. He asks for details about your reasoning behind going to Route 2 and why you bought the specific amount of potions and Pokéballs that you did. He delves into your strategies during the few battles you were involved in and the decisions you made in regards to your team. If you were to guess, he must have filled his notepad with more fun facts and unrelated background details than information on your experience in the mysterious structure. Despite this odd line of questioning, you answered everything you possibly could and at the end of it all, Lance had managed to stretch a twenty minute story into a several hour long conversation that would be almost impossible to follow for anyone but he.

With a satisfied look on his face, Lance rises from his unseen perch and stores his notepad along with his pen back into his coat. “I’d like to thank you for your cooperation Walter, you have made both of our jobs much easier.”

“So when am I free to go, and what about Aaron?” You ask before taking a sip of water that was brought in earlier.

“You will be released along with him. I arranged for you both to be picked up and brought back to your respective homes. While you may not realize this, I was conducting two interrogations at once. I would explain how, but you’ve already seen enough.”

You decide to ignore this strange bit of information and turn the subject to Armo and the others “And my Pokémon?”

“They are being stored elsewhere, I can have them delivered to you before the van arrives. I did notice however, that the two most recent additions to your team were caught on the premises of this restricted area. Though they are technically under the ownership of my employers, I am willing to recover them for you as thanks for your cooperation.”

cont.
>>
>>4172287
Before you can respond, a loud screech plays over an intercom. Looking to the right, you can see that the mysterious figures are still seated behind the glass. One of them however is now standing up with one hand on what you assume is a microphone.

“Excuse you?’ Booms the heavily distorted voice.

Lance casually turns to the mirror and plucks his hat from the air. “Is there a problem?”

“Those Pokémon are part of the experiment. A rather delicate and expensive experiment might I add. Letting the trespassers go without any insurance that they won’t talk is one thing, but to let them take the test subjects is unthinkable! Do you have any idea how long it took to put all of this together?”

“Approximately four months, one week, five days, and seventeen hours.” Answers Lance as he brushes off his coat. “As for the cost of this operation, I will need to check my notes. The Pokémon that were caught are easily replaceable and are of no importance to the overall success of the experiment. If your superiors take issue with my decision then they can discuss it with me. In the meantime, I will ensure that these two will remain silent and if necessary, I will aid in the relocation efforts for this operation.”

“This is insanity!” Shrieks the figure.

“This is a transaction. I value cooperation above all else. Things such as time and money are no longer a factor due to your organization’s more recent breakthroughs.” The consultant then puts his fist through the table for emphasis, causing the table to shimmer and reconfigure itself in reaction to the force of his strike. “If you had any objections you should have raised them earlier.” Lance turns back to you and tips his hat before sinking through the floor as if it were quicksand. The figure behind the glass curses and shuts off the intercom before turning off the lights behind the mirror, leaving you all alone once more.

After a bit of waiting, a bald man dressed as a private security guard enters the room and unchains you from the seat. He then leads you through several grey and barren hallways until you suddenly find yourself outside and back at the bottom of the hill. Seconds later Aaron, accompanied by another guard, suddenly appears beside you. The four of you stand in silence for a few moments until another guard arrives carrying two suitcases. He hands one of them to Aaron and another one to you before leaving without a single word. As soon as he leaves, a large black van with all terrain tires pulls up beside you and the guards motion for you to get in.

cont.
>>
>>4172289
The ride home is just as tense and awkward as the wait for the van. The guards take their seats beside you and sit as still and silent as statues all throughout the trip. Eventually, you make it back to Cycad Town where you are dropped off first. As soon as you step out, the vans engine roars to life and Aaron scarcely has time to give you a sheepish wave before the vehicle speeds off into the night.

“Deep breaths Walter, deep breaths. Let’s just continue as normal and act as if none of this ever happened.”

Shaking your head at what’s become of this day, you turn your back on the street and walk over to apartment #132. Patting yourself down, you realize that you left your keys in your bag but there’s no doubt in your mind that they threw that ratty old thing away. You take a look at the new briefcase in your hand and place it down on the ground before opening it. Inside are five Pokéballs along with two potions and your house keys. You take the keys and shut the briefcase before standing up and opening the door. The place looks no different than the way you left it, which gives you a small feeling of relief if nothing else. With a sigh, you close the door and make your way through the darkness to your bedroom.

The first thing you notice when you first enter your room is a medium sized cardboard box. On top of the box is a folded note which is tapped shut. The only thing that’s written on the outside is “The Big N”.

You place your briefcase by your bedside and pick up the box. You take the note from the box and unfold. It reads as follows:

Hey Walt,

I came over today to bring this to you but your mom said you ran off again. I know its not my place to tell you how to deal with your business, but would it kill you to take it easy every once in a while? Rushing into things while keeping a one-track mind is a recipe for disaster. You already know my story or at least parts of it. So take it from someone who’s been around a few times and keep and open mind. Learn when to hang back and when to go full tilt; it could save your life. Anyway, the stuff is in the box. I managed to get you the newest Pokédex they had along with your Trainer Card. I also threw in a new pair of shoes since you’ve been wearing the same pair for over a year now. The instructions for all of it are in the box too.

As for the payment, our guy is going to be in Nucite City until next Saturday so that should give you plenty of time to track him down and have a good time while you’re doing it. If you need any help or advice, just call my cell phone. By the time you read this, I’ve already left to deliver the package. Make sure to say goodbye before you leave for me.

Best wishes,

Nate

Placing the note on your bed, you stifle a yawn as you open the box.

Moving the contents of the box aside, you find two instruction booklets. You first take some time to look over Trainer Card booklet and read over the basics. You read up on the information stored on the card, its various uses, how to get a new one if it gets lost, and the process for renewing your Trainer Card. The most important things you pick however, involve the functions of the card. You learn that in order to participate in Gym Battles, various tournaments, and contests, all of your current Pokémon must be registered on the card. Any unregistered Pokémon will be unable to participate in these events. You also learn that the card can be used as a method of payment rather than simply using cash and that each card is linked to a Trainer’s account.

After putting away the Trainer Card booklet, you shift your attention to the Pokédex manual. The manual is mostly comprised of technobabble, troubleshooting tips, and there are several pages dedicated to the warranty policy. Eventually, you manage to find some information that will actually be useful to know during your journey. You read up on the basics such as scanning Pokémon how to use the search and radar functions. You also learn that your Pokédex can perform the Trainer Card’s registration function. After reading through every section that seems important, you place the booklet and manual back in the box and move it under your bed.

After arranging everything to your liking, you look over at your clock which now reads 01:27 and decide to call it a night. You turn off the bedside lamp and attempt to get some well-deserved rest. Your slumber is not peaceful however, and your last few moments within the labyrinth play through your mind over and over again in your dreams. No matter how many times the events loop back on themselves, you can never gain control over your actions and everything plays out just as it did with no deviations. Not even the your racket produced by your alarm clock is enough to drag you out of this nightmare and you are plunged into the dark well once more.

Your horrific dreams come to an abrupt end when you feel yourself being slapped repeatedly. As your eyes fly open, you see Armo standing on your bed preparing to slap you once again. Once he sees that you’re awake however, he puts his arm down and nods, satisfied that his job is done.

“Hitting someone isn’t the best way to deal with their trauma.” You grumble to Armo as he leaps off the bed.

You rub your eyes for a moment before throwing your legs over the side of your bed and sitting up. Your body groans in protest as you adjust to this new position, but you do your best to ignore it as you get up and leave the room. Skipping the shower, you go straight to the kitchen and help yourself to several bowls of cereal to deal your hunger. As you eat and think over your next move, you hear a knock on the door. With a sigh, you drag yourself to the door and look through the peephole to see a man wearing a black hoodie and sunglasses. You back up and move into a more secluded room as you mull over your options.

Keeping your footsteps as silent as possible, you make your way towards the bathroom and take the aluminum bat propped up in the corner. You always found it weird that your mother kept a bat in the bathroom, but if you were to guess your father may have something to do with that. Either way, you silently thank both of them for their paranoia as you creep over to the front door once again. A quick look through the peephole tells you that the man is still standing there and making a call to someone. Taking advantage of the man’s carelessness, you swing open the door and slam the bat into his midsection like a battering ram before bringing it down on his head. The man goes down like a plank and flops onto your welcome mat with his arms outstretched. Thinking quickly, you pull the man into your apartment by his arms and after a lot of effort, you manage to drape him over the couch.

Hearing the commotion, Armo walks into the living room and shakes his head upon seeing the unconscious man on your couch.

“Don’t look at me like that.” You say to him as you hold the bat with shaking hands. “Just give me some time to think. Ugh, it’s just one mess after another!” You groan as you lean on the door.

>Call and warn Aaron

“First things first.” You mutter to yourself as you head to your bedroom. “Keep an eye on him.” You say to Armo.

The second you enter your room, you begin tearing it up in search of your phone. It is only after you check under your nightstand for the third time when you realize that your phone was also confiscated along with your other belongings. After looking through your briefcase and finding nothing, you come to the conclusion that your phone was the one item that they didn’t let you keep.

“Wonderful!” You say as you give the briefcase a hefty kick before running to the kitchen.

You quickly snatch up the landline and attempt to dial Aaron’s number from memory. After a few botched attempts, you finally get the number right one.

“Hello?” Says a tired voice on the other end.

“It’s me Aaron. We may have a problem.”

“We? I’m the one who had to go to work on only fours hours of sleep.”

“That’s the last of our problems. I think they aren’t done with us yet.”

“What makes you say that?” Asks Aaron with a yawn.

“I’ve got a suspicious looking guy knocked out on my couch right now. I think he might be some sort of hitman.”

There is a long pause on the other end before Aaron speaks again. “So you took out a hitman all by yourself.” He says sounding as skeptical as anyone in this situation could possibly be.

“There’s a lot more to it than that, but yes. I think they’ll be sending someone to the Trainers’ School next or they might have already.”

“I’ll keep an eye out. Stay where you are and get your team ready, they could send more people your way if the first one doesn’t contact them soon.”

“Don’t worry about me, I have this under control.”

“Normally, I would press the issue but me worrying about you got us into this. Contact me if anything else happens.”

With that Aaron hangs up and you immediately begin dialing Nathan’s number.

“Walt? I didn’t expect you to call so soon. Is there a problem?”

“Let’s just say that I need help relocating something before I leave to do that job for you.” As you speak, you can hear the sounds of loud chewing on the other end.

“No problem, I’ll send someone over to your place. They should be over in about an hour if the stars alig.” As you listen closely, the sound of music can also be heard in the background. “Speaking of stars, you should really come down to Seloras City after you’re done. The restaurants here beat the pants off of pretty much everything we have over here.”

“Yeah, I figured I would swing by eventually. Thanks again for your help but I need to go check on something.”

“No problem, you were actually lucky to call me when you did. I’ll busy for the rest of the day with the way things are going.”

“You don’t sound too unhappy about that.” You reply.

Nathan lets out a chuckle. “What can I say, I love what I do. See you around kid.”

As soon as you put the phone down for the final time, you feel something tugging at your pants. Looking down, you see Armo who is pointing at the living room.

“Ugh, I was hoping he’d stay out longer. Thanks for the warning.” With that, you pick Armo up and bring him with you into the living room where the man in black is beginning to stir.

As the suspicious man regains consciousness, you grip the bat tightly and attempt to place yourself in the optimal position to deliver another swing. Likewise, Armo stands at your side ready for action. For a few tense seconds, the both of you stand there staring at him until he finally speaks.

“Do you know what I do for a living?” Asks the man with a low voice.

“I have a few guesses, none of them good.”

The man takes off his cracked sunglasses and places them in his pocket. “Then why are you standing over me with a bat? Why are you still here?”

“I want some answers and you’re going to give them to me.”

Even without his shades, the man’s face is unreadable. “Young and dumb, a classic combination. You do realize that you won’t leave this room alive, yes? Your faith in those two weapons by your side is misguided.”

“Keep making threats like that and I’ll take you out again.” You retort as you narrow your eyes.

“By the look in your eyes I can see that you’re willing, but are you able?” The man then cracks his neck and assumes a more assertive position. “Here’s what’s going to happen. Some time within the next minute, I’m going to pounce and make you wish that you had run when you had the chance. Do with that information as you will.”

You and the man in black stare each other down for what seems like an eternity. No matter how long you stare at him, his body language doesn’t give anything away. His eyes are cold and focused and his breathing is even. Conversely, you are much easier to read by comparison and the second you show the slightest hint of weakness, the hitman launches himself off of the couch at frightening speeds. Thankfully, Armo was also watching you and waiting for this very moment. Your armored companion hurls himself at your attacker and curls up before burying himself in the hitman’s stomach. This causes him to lurch forward, giving you the perfect opportunity to connect with an upwards swing to the jaw. The hit rattles the hitman who stumbles back and collapses onto the couch in a heap, unconscious once again.

Despite your victory, you are unsatisfied with this outcome and strike him twice more before throwing the bat across the room in anger. Wordlessly, you go back to your room and return a few seconds later with Sephira’s ball.

“I’m counting on you two to watch him.” You say to Armo in a cold and even tone. “I’ll be back soon.”

With that, you release Sephira into the living room who takes a second to look around at her new surroundings before taking notice of you and growling.

“Don’t try anything.” You say to her as you rummage through the hitman’s pockets for his phone.

You find what you’re looking for and look at your Pokémon once more before leaving the apartment. With the hitman incapacitated once more and his phone in your possession, it’s time to properly restrain him.

>Go to Nathan’s apartment for some restraints

Closing the door behind you, you make your way to the front of the apartment complex and rummage through the line of bushes outside. After a few minute of searching, you find Nathan’s spare key which is hidden in a dark brown sock which blends in nicely with the surrounding dirt. You then take the key and walk back to Nathan’s apartment, then let yourself in. As soon as you close the door behind you, the large Mightyena from before snarls before approaching you This time however, it doesn’t rush you and stays completely still.

“Nathan must have given me some sort of clearance.” You think to yourself as you walk past the hologram.

Even while stationary, the projection is still as intimidating as ever, but you do your best to ignore it as you enter Nathan’s office/storage room. After rummaging through a few boxes you manage to find a pair of handcuffs which you stuff in your pocket.

Before leaving, you decide to write Nathan a quick note to explain why you looted his office. You take a seat on one of the couches sitting in the living room and search the cluttered table for a small sticky note and a pen. You soon find what you’re looking for along with a strange remote containing only one button and a dial. As you are preparing the note, you hear an odd sound at the door which reminds you of rushing wind. Before you can think to do anything, the noise stops and is instead replace by the sound of splintering wood as a large white arm smashes through the door. Upon detecting an intruder, the projected Mightyena lets out a snarl and makes its way towards the door.

With no other options, you slide the dial on the remote to its highest setting and press the button. To your surprise, a large screen with various icons and a keyboard is then projected from the top of the remote.

The projected Mightyena’s apparent invincibility slowly wipes away your fear and instead replaces it with curiosity. As Vigoroth tries in vain to damage the security system, you scroll through the dozens of offensive and defensive options available for it. As far as you can tell, practically every move that can be learned by Mightyena has been packed into the options menu which gives you many ideas and plenty of room to work with.

On the other side of the room, Vigoroth quickly begins to understand that using Slash will not work and decides to change strategies. The savage Pokémon takes a step back in order to gain some distance, and the proceeds to let out a loud and infectious yawn. As before however, the projection does not react in the slightest until you issue your next command. As soon as you finish typing, sparks begin to fly off of the Mightyena’s mouth as it sinks its teeth into Vigoroth once more, electrocuting it in the process. After just two attacks, Vigoroth has been heavily damaged and has yet to make any headway in this battle. Despite this, it still looks as determined as ever to see this through.

With nothing left to lose, Vigoroth begins to store power causing small shockwaves exude from its body. Various papers and small objects begin to fly around the room as all of the stored power slowly drains into its fist.

“Checkmate.” You say more to yourself than to Vigoroth as you command the projection to use Crunch one last time.

The artificial Mightyena leaps forward and clamps its jaws around Vigoroth yet again, interrupting Vigoroth’s attack and brining it to the ground. The wild monkey Pokémon attempts to struggle back to its feet but fails and collapses on the floor as the all of the fight left in it fades. The entire ordeal had lasted less than a minute and yet Mightyena shows no signs of wear and tear. The living room, on the other hand looks like a warzone with overturned furniture, various papers, bottles, and clothing littering the place.

“At this rate I’ll be spending the entire day doing damage control.” You grumble as you scroll through the defensive options. “Let’s deal with this first.”

With a few clicks, you take direct control of Mightyena and position it on top of Vigoroth’s chest before activating Protect. You then set up a set of directions for the projection to follow and fill it with the order “Use Protect.”

“That should hold him long enough. Now what am I supposed to do about the door and this mess?” You ask yourself as you look around at the destruction caused by the battle.

In the interest of time, you decide to write a short note to Nathan in order to apologize for and explain the situation with his apartment. After you finish, you take one more look at the imprisoned Vigoroth before heading back to your apartment. When you return, the hitman is still unconscious, but Armo and Sephira aren’t where you left them. You prepare to take a deep breath before doing anything rash but your stress management session is cut short by the sound of a crash in the kitchen. Expecting the worse, you pick up the bat once again and take a peak inside only to see Armo on top of the kitchen table. Looking down, you see Sephira licking up the contents of a shattered bowl of cereal.

You decide to ignore your Pokémon’s antics for now and turn your attention back to the hitman. It takes you a few seconds, but you eventually figure out how to properly use the cuffs and restrain him. With another box checked off of your extensive to do list, you take a seat and mindlessly watch Armo and Sephira argue over the amount of flakes each one should receive. According to Nathan, his one-man cleanup crew should arrive sometime before 11 am. That gives you some time to plan and handle a few things before you can begin to make some important decisions.

>Check through the hitman’s phone

You reach into your pocket and pull out the hitman’s phone. It’s even older than yours but you would assume that someone with his profession has no need for the latest overpriced cellular device anyway. You find a large amount of contacts on the phone, but all of them have been assigned codenames and any memos the hitman may have written to himself are hidden behind a password. Checking over his messages, you find that he was communicating with someone labeled Cor-Con 5B less than an hour ago. Much like the contact names, most of the conversation is filled with various codes and references to events and individuals which you have no knowledge of.

After several minutes of trying to understand what you’re looking at, you eventually learn at least three things. Firstly, the organization is aware of both your address and Aaron’s thanks to the interrogations conducted by Lance and a tracking devices that were placed inside your shoes. The second thing you learn is that the hitman was not only sent to get rid of you but to also retrieve the Pokémon you had taken from under the organization’s nose. Thirdly, in the event that the initial attempts fail, several individuals will be tasked with conducting a raid at approximately 13:35. This gives you less than three hours to prepare.

As you take your time to reflect on what you’ve learned, you hear someone knocking on the door in rapid succession. You warily approach the door and take a look through the peephole to see a large man wearing an orange vest and a watch cap. After a short exchange, you confirm that the individual was sent by Nathan and let him inside before explaining the situation. After you give your vague explanation for the unconscious man on your couch, the man simply takes the hitman’s unconscious form and slings him over his shoulder.

“Alright, I can take things from here,” he explains. “Do you need anything else before I get going?”

>Mention the Vigoroth in Nathan’s apartment
>Ask for a ride (Trainers’ School)

“I forgot to mention one thing,” you begin. “There’s also a Vigoroth in Nathan’s apartment. While I was there looking for restraints, it crashed through the door and attacked me. I managed to get it under control a while ago but I’ll need to go in first just to be safe.”

The man takes a look at the clock on the wall before looking back at you. “Alright, I can handle that. Do what you have to do and when I’m done loading up this guy, I’ll be back for the Vigoroth.”

As soon as the man leaves, you exit your apartment as well and walk back into Nathan’s trashed home. You take the controller for the artificial Mightyena from off of the couch and slide the dial back to the position you originally found it in. Automatically, the Mightyena steps off of its prisoner and returns to its usual spot near the door. After messing with the dial again, it completely vanishes, leaving you alone with the unconscious Vigoroth. Minutes later, the man in the orange vest returns and slings another one of your would-be assailants over his shoulder.

Thinking back to what you learned from the hitman’s messages, you realize that your use for the man has not yet run out. “Before you go, could you help me out with one last thing.”

“Depends on what you need,” says the man. “I’ve got a few other appointments to deal with after this.”

“I just need to get to the Trainers’ School. Since you’re driving these two somewhere, I was wondering if I could hitch a ride. Even if you could only drop me off a few blocks away, it would be a big help.”

The man gives your request a bit of thought before answering. “Sure thing, be ready in three.”

The man leaves and you turn the security system back on before turning off the lights and leaving the apartment. You quickly return to your bedroom and grab your briefcase before going to the kitchen and recalling both Armo and Sephira. As you take a quick look at the clock, you realize that there isn’t much time until you have to go.

“I’d better call Aaron before I get there. The last thing either of us need are more surprises.”

You quickly dial Aaron’s work number once again but you only manage to reach his voicemail. Nevertheless you leave a message, giving him a quick rundown on what’s going on and informing him that you’re going to the Trainers’ School to meet up with him. As soon as you finish recording your message, you go outside and find the van waiting for you in Nathan’s parking space. Without wasting any time, you get in the passenger seat and your temporary chauffeur drives off as soon as you’re buckled in.

The drive is fairly short and like the one you had yesterday, mostly silent. This ride is not nearly as tense or creepy as the one you received from the organization, but the fact that there are two bodies in the back of the van makes you a bit uneasy. Occasionally, you attempt to get a good look at the unwilling passengers in the back, but they’ve been covered in large black bags as well as tarps and are still unconscious. The man in the vest on the other hand, is completely focused on the road and has obviously done this sort of things more times than he would care to count. After a few minutes of driving, the man stops the van and turns to you.

“I’ve gotta make a turn here so this is as close as I can get. Good luck with your school stuff.”

Nodding, you take off your seat belt and slide out of the van. “Thanks for your help.” You say to the man before he gives you a small salute and takes off.

Thankfully, it seems that you’ve been unknowingly dropped off in a very convenient location. You’re only a few blocks away from the school and you’re in a rather secluded area, giving you a few options for approaching the situation.

Taking it slow, the two of you snake your way through the alleys and cut through various buildings. Occasionally, Armo acts as a scout and surveys the immediate area before reporting back to you. To your surprise, nothing comes up and you manage to make it to the back of the school without any issue. The process of sneaking through the back wasn’t a complete bore however; located near the dumpster you find a large object struggling under a tangled mass of webs.

“It looks like Aaron handled his hitman too.” You say to Armo who begins poking at the bundle of webs. “I guess that means they’ll be coming after us twice as hard.”

After stealing another quick glance at the surrounding area, you determine that stealth is no longer necessary. To avoid wasting any more time, you and Armo walk around to the front and enter through the automatic doors. To your dismay, the receptionist from earlier is manning the front desk once again. You aren’t in the mood to deal with here after the day you’ve had today and you’re inclined to simply pick a random wing and look for Aaron on your own. On the other hand, you don’t feel comfortable relying on luck, especially yours, during such a crucial time.

You decide to go with the most straightforward approach and speak with the mildly unreceptive receptionist. Knowing that waiting for her to address you is pointless, you instead approach the front desk and make your presence known.

“I’m looking for Aaron.” You say, making an effort to skip the pleasantries.

The receptionist takes a full minute to respond, much to your aggravation. “Who?” She asks as she glances at you before turning her attention back to the screen in front of her.

“He’s an instructor here. I need to speak with him as soon as possible.”

The receptionist continues clicking away as she speaks. “He’s in the middle of teaching a class right now. Do you want to leave a message?”

“Where is his room?”

“The instructors here do not have their own rooms.”

“Then where is he now?” You demand as your annoyance begins to surface.

Before the situation escalates any further, Armo pokes you in the leg and motions for you to follow him. He then curls up and rolls in the direction of the E Wing. Without a word, you run after him, ignoring the receptionist’s protests as you attempt to keep up with Armo’s incredible pace. Within moments, Armo has lead you to the door of a rather large room where Aaron is teaching a crowd of about twenty or so kids around your age.

>Knock on the door

You give the heavy door a few knocks, prompting one of the students to approach the door and open it for you. You poke your head through the door and wave Aaron over to you.

“I’m sorry for the interruption everyone,” Aaron says as he puts down a large stack of papers. “I need to discuss some important business. If I’m not back in the next ten minutes you can all take the practice tests at home.”

The room is soon filled with the cheers of many students as Aaron steps away from his desk and joins you out in the hallway.

“Did you get my message?” You ask as Aaron closes the door behind him.

“No, and I told you to stay home, Walter. Its too dangerous for either of us to be out in the open. You could’ve been ambushed on your way over here.”

“Things have changed Aaron. You were right, they are sending more people after us and I don’t think a bat and webs will save us this time.”

Aaron’s expression becomes serious as he places a hand on his chin. “In that case we need to get the police involved. They should be able to send out a few officers to protect our homes and hopefully take these hitmen into custody while we hide somewhere else. I have a friend who would be willing to let us stay for a month at the least.”

“It would be a waste of time,” you explain as you shake your head. “They placed some sort of homing device on our shoes and thanks to how thorough Lance was, they probably know about any other places we would think to hide. We only have two hours before they send a hit squad to deal with us so we need to either prepare to fight them off or run and ditch the trackers in a remote location.”

“None of those options sound very attractive. We don’t know how dangerous these people are and I can’t honestly say that I’ll be able protect you if things get out of hand. I’m tempted to run too, but if they can’t get to us, I have no doubt that they’ll turn their attention to any and all friends and family members who could lead them to us.” Aaron exhales as he leans against the nearby wall. “If I had to choose, I’d say that confronting them is our best option. We know they’re coming and we have some time to prepare. If we can come out on top, that should give us an opening to put an end to this.”

Aaron nods as he stands up straight once again. “If that’s what you want, then we’ll fight and see this through. I got us into this and it’s my responsibility to sand by you.”

“So where do we start?” You ask as Armo makes his way to a nearby storage closet.

“The first thing we need to do is cover the basics. What condition are your Pokémon in?”

“They’re just as hurt as they were when I last saw you. I thought of going to the Pokémon Center last night but I was too tired.” You admit sheepishly. ”If that wasn’t bad enough, half of them hate me or want to kill me.”

“It’s a good thing we’re here then.” Aaron replies as he motions for you to follow him. “Let’s get your team restored to full health. We can deal with your roster and discuss strategy while we wait.”

You return Armo to his ball before losing him again and follow Aaron to a room located on the farthest side of the hallway. Inside the room are several metal racks lining the walls and several small healing stations. You open up your briefcase and set your Pokéballs into the machine before switching it on. The Pokéballs are soon surrounded by a thin veil of yellow energy as odd noises begin to come from the machine.

“So what do you want to do next?” Questions Aaron as the two of you watch the healing station in action. “We can either begin planning our strategy now or get you acquainted with some new Pokémon.”

“I think I’ll stick with the team I have. A good plan is more important than just having strong Pokémon.”

Aaron looks as if wants to say something but simply nods instead. “Alright then, let’s come up with a strategy. The first thing we’ll need to do is choose our battlefield. We’ll need to take a proactive approach rather than a defensive one.”

The two of you take some time to think of a suitable spot for the battle but all of the locations that are brought up have glaring issues involving logistics and exposure.

Finally, you think of a location that both of you can agree on. “We should set the ambush in the forest on Route 3, that way they won’t know that they’ve been tricked until its too late.”

“Perfect.” Aaron exclaims as he crosses his arms. “The trees and bushes will be great hiding spaces and as cover against any lower level attacks. All we need to do now is determine the most strategic location to put our shoes.”

“I came across a river while I was out there,” you explain, thinking back to your last week’s adventure. “I also met a Teddiursa, so that means there might be a cave nearby. Either of them would be a good place to set up an ambush.”

“We’ll cross that bridge when we get to Route 3. Right now we need to discuss our plan of attack. I’ll be the one to get their attention and have them focus their efforts on my team and I. What I need you to do is stay hidden and attack from cover whenever you see an opening, your Pokémon aren’t ready to take on multiple opponents and we still don’t know what sort of Pokémon this hit squad has.”

This comment somewhat irks you considering what you saw Armo do in the labyrinth. “Why are you so confident if you don’t know what we’re up against?” You ask.

“I’m not. I’d like to say that we’re going to make it out of this, but it’s a long shot. There’s only so much the two of us can do.”

“Then in that case, we’ll need all the help we can get. Why don’t we get some of your students to back us up?” Upon hearing this, Aaron looks at you as if you’ve sprouted wings. You imagine that Armo would give you the same look if he were here for this.

“This is a life and death situation Walter. Even if I wanted to drag another kid into this mess, none of my students have any Pokémon who are ready for a battle like this and I’ve only known them students for a week. Come to think of it, I’ve known them for even less than that since we somehow spent more than two days in that tower.” Aaron takes a look at his emptying classroom as he continues. “My students would have to completely reckless or easily manipulated if they were to willingly join us.”

Aaron looks is if he is going to continue, but is unexpectedly interrupted by the sounds of commotion in the hallway.

As soon as you run out of the room to determine the source of the disturbance, you slip on the wet floor and immediately regret your decision. Scrambling to your feet, you find that in the middle of the hallway are four individuals: a man who you’ve never seen before accompanied by a Drapion and Chloe, Ivan’s biweekly girlfriend who has her Buizel beside her. Though you have no idea what she would be doing here, you can tell what the man is all about just by looking it him.

Brushing yourself off, you make your way to the scene. “So do they buy you guys in bulk, or is hunting down some kid and a teacher too much for just one of you?”

“Wait, Walter? What are you doing here?” Asks Chloe, breaking her gaze from the hitman.

“So you’re the other one,” states the man as a few students go rushing past him. “I was told to keep you in the back of my mind just in case you got in the way but for some reason, they didn’t hire us to take you out. People have no loyalty these days.” The man laments.

You raise any eyebrow at the mention of another hitman. “Us?”

“My partner out back,” Explains the man calmly. “I tell him to keep watch while I get us some food and when I get back, he’s webbed to a dumpster. I’m honestly surprised he hasn’t gotten himself killed after all this time.”

“You guys get more incompetent the longer this day goes on.” You say, as Aaron comes up behind you. “Look, you’re outnumbered and it’s a little early for the raid. Why don’t you try again later?”

“You know what, you’re right. Three on one isn’t my style.” The then man shifts his attention to the ground as he speaks. “Too bad I’m not a part of that raid business, we could’ve actually gotten paid. Drapion, get us out of here! Vic is on his own this time!”

At the hitman’s command, the Drapion jams its claws into the tile flooring and begins rapidly tearing chunks from the ground, launching debris everywhere. Within seconds a large hole is created in the ground and both the hitman and his Pokémon make their exit.

“Should…. we be going after him?” Asks Chloe, who obviously just stumbled into this situation minutes ago.

You take another step closer to the hitman and look down on him. “We want some answers. Specifically ones that can point us in the direction of your employers.”

“And then what?”

“We can focus on that later,” asserts Aaron. “Now is not the time for negotiations.”

The hitman looks between the two of you and grins. “What’s your hurry? Getting something done fast doesn’t matter if you do it sloppily.”

“Yes, it’s a shame that you’re only now learning this lesson.” Aaron puts on a more diplomatic voice as he continues. “Your partner isn’t coming back for you and you aren’t getting paid for this job. There will be a new group of individuals sent after us in less than an hour. You have nothing to gain from hiding secrets from us and if you give us some valuable information, we could simply let you go.”

“Is that so?” Vic responds, not at all convinced.

“I think all of us are capable of viewing this as an impersonal matter.” To your surprise, Aaron sounds as if he’s genuinely willing to let the man off easy.

“Alright then, I can’t tell you much but what I do know is that we got this contract from the Bent Market.”

You’ve never of the Bent Market before, but given the situation you can make an educated guess. “I’m guessing the guys who run it are just middlemen?”

Vic turns to you and nods. “You guessed right. You’d have to be a pretty special guy to have direct dealings with corporations these days. People would rather go for a one and done deal with a stranger than bring them in for any period of time. There’s no loyalty in this business anymore.”

“So you don’t actually know the name of the organization that hired you?” Aaron asks.

“The Bent Market protects the buyers, the sellers and of course, themselves. Given the pay they were offering and the details they provided us, I can tell that they’re corporate. I’ve been in this game long enough to tell the suits from the ski masks.”

Upon realizing what all of this means, you let out a sigh and turn to Aaron. “It looks like we’re back to square one now. I don’t think any of these guys will be able to tell us what we need to know.”

“I can help you with that.” Proclaims Chloe as she suddenly appears behind the two of you. “I’ve dealt with a few guys from the Bent Market before.”

“Did you deal with them, or did your mindless crew of yes-men do all of the work?” You ask with disdain.

Chloe rolls her eyes as she peers at Vic over Aaron’s shoulder. “They’re called friends Walter, maybe if you had a few you wouldn’t be so jealous of others who have them.”

“Why are you still here?”

“Do you want some info or not?” Chloe asks, matching your hostile attitude.

Noticing that an opportunity is slipping away, Aaron decides to step in. “We’ll take any information you have on the subject.”

“They’re based in both Nucite and Cirrostra City, but we only handled the people in Cirrostra. They’re partnered with a lot of shady people but they were doing a lot of business with this one group when we found them.”

“And what would the name of this group be?” Aaron prods.

“I think they were called VAR Industries or something like that.” Chloe replies, looking fairly sure of herself.

“That sounds about right,” says Vic, drawing everyone’s attention. “People tend to disappear when they get on their radar. How did a bunch of nobodies like you end up on their bad side?” Vic is actually showing another emotion other than boredom or skepticism now, which leads you to believe that you’re pretty lucky to have gotten this far.

“They’d probably send people after you as well if we answered that question.” Says Aaron as he looks at his watch.” Your team is almost ready Walter, we should wrap things up soon.”

>Get the team and prepare to leave while Aaron deals with Vic

“Alright,” you say as you step away from Vic. “I’ll tell everyone what’s going on before we leave.”

With that, you leave the scene and enter the school through the back exit. The place is completely empty now thanks to the appearance of the other hitman and his Drapion. You’ve become used to deafening silence and living in a home that is usually empty, so this eerie scene doesn’t bother at all. You are surprised however, by how quickly everyone evacuated, the place almost looks like its abandoned now. Making sure not to slip this time around as you walk along the soaked floors, you enter the school’s miniature Pokémon Center and check on the healing process.

After a few minutes of waiting, the machine gives makes an odd but joyful sounding noise and the yellow light fades from the Pokéballs inside. You take Honedge’s ball and store it away in your briefcase immediately before removing the other balls and releasing their inhabitants. Armo comes out looking as nonchalant as ever while Sephira and Monsoon look very confused. Of course, Monsoon’s confusion dwarfs Sephira’s by leaps and bounds due to how long he had been left in a fainted state. In fact, this is the first time the duckling and fire cub have met and Monsoon’s uneasiness is painfully obvious.

You do the best you can with the introductions and explain the situation that you all face along with the barebones plan that you and Aaron laid out. The reactions to your words vary with Armo looking ready for action and Monsoon attempting to emulate Armo’s confidence. Sephira on the other hand doesn’t seem to care at all though she did perk up when you mentioned that the hitmen where sent to return her back to the organization. Though your team’s demeanor doesn’t fill you with confidence, you understand that now is not the time for uncertainty.

Taking a deep breath, you address your team with a speech you’ve been preparing since you went through the first hitman’s phone. “Alright everyone, I know that this isn’t exactly the best position to be in. I know we haven’t been working long together and I know we all have some things to work out, but if we can’t stand and fight as a team, then this is the end of the line for all of us. I know our story doesn’t end here, because in just one week, we’ve won battles and seen things that few have ever seen before. This won’t be easy, but for what it’s worth, I know that we have what it takes to see this through and come out on top.”

As you conclude your speech, Armo begins to clap while the others look at him in confusion, most likely due to the fact that they lack hands and presumably have had little to no prolonged contact with humans. Despite the unorthodox conclusion, the group looks a little more focused and confident than they did a few minutes ago, so you’ll take what you can get.

After returning your Pokémon back to their balls, you leave the room and enter the hallway again, this time heading towards the foyer which is also rather slippery. You give the deserted room one last look before exiting through the front doors to wait for Aaron to pick you up. The wait last for longer than you predicted but Aaron eventually arrives at the school in a small blue car and quickly honks at your lounging form.

“That took awhile.” You comment as Aaron pulls out of the parking lot.

“Our favorite hitman just so happens to be staying on the other side of town. I’m honestly surprised at how fast I got over here.” As he drives, Aaron constantly checks his rear view mirror, possibly to look for anyone who may be tailing you. “Speaking of time management, we need to decide how we’re going to approach this ambush step by step.”

“So what’s the first step?”

“You mentioned two locations on Route 3, the river and a cave. Where do you want to set the ambush?”

>”Let’s look for some caves.”

“Alright then,” Aaron replies as you make your way towards the outskirts of town. “I know the locations of a few caves on Route 3. They may be pretty small, but they’re just what we need for an ambush like this.”

As Aaron continues to drive, the two of you discuss attack strategies, plans for a strategic withdraw if necessary, and predictions on what Pokémon the hit squad will be utilizing. Eventually, the conversation shifts to the aftermath of this battle. Though Aaron originally predicted this to be a one-time event, the information you gathered from Vic and Chloe seems to paint a rather bleak picture. If your enemies have enough money to pull stunts such as this on a regular basis, you doubt that one failure will be enough for them to get the message. You express these concerns to Aaron, but has a much more optimistic outlook on the situation despite how seriously he’s taking this.

Eventually, you find yourselves in the heart of Route 3. You don’t know how close Cycad or Marlan Town is from here, but judging by what little sticks out about Route 3, you can only assume that you’re much farther from home than you were when you last came here. With great difficulty, Aaron finds a suitable place to park the car between a large mass of trees and the two of you do your best to cover it with leaves and branches so that your getaway vehicle won’t attract any unwanted attention.

“That should do it.” Says Aaron as he brushes his hands off on his jacket and takes another look at the camouflaged car.

“You don’t sound too convinced.”

“Well, we do have a lot riding on this.” Aaron explains without a hint of humor in his voice. “If they take sabotage or destroy my car, we’ll have to rely on Salamence to get us out of here quickly. I trust him with my life but all things considered, I’d rather not have my car blown up just because a bit of dirt was out of place.”

You give the vehicle another once over before doing the same with the surrounding area. “We’ve already dealt with three goons by now, I think you’re giving these guys too much credit.”

“I guess you’re right,” Aaron relents as he turns his back on the car. “Maybe we’ll get lucky and find a cave that’s somewhat farther away from this spot.” He then reaches for his belt and disconnects a Poké Ball before unleashing the Staraptor inside. “I need you to keep watch and lets us know if you see any suspicious groups wandering around. Walter and I are going to look for a suitable cave.”

The Staraptor gives Aaron a quick salute before taking off and soaring high above the trees. With a nod, Aaron turns and begins moving westward as you trail behind. Sure enough, after a bit of walking, Aaron leads you to a modest looking cave surrounded by large rocks and ditches. After exploring the inside for a while, it becomes obvious that this is the perfect location for the ambush. The place looks completely unassuming with are no signs of any Pokémon having taking up residence, and it has only one way in or out giving you complete control over the area.

“Now, on to step two.” Announces Aaron as the two of you exit the mouth of the cave.

“And that would be?” You ask as you come to a stop

“Preparing the site,” Aaron replies with a grin as he surveys the wide area surrounding the cave. “They might have planned for a raid, but what they’re getting into will feel more like a siege.”

You quickly catch on to Aaron’s meaning as you take a closer look at the cave behind you. “Well then, what are we waiting for?” You say as a devious grin makes its way onto your face. “Let’s get this red carpet rolling!”

This marks the end of thread #2. Once again, I’d like to give a thank you to everyone in the audience for their support. As before, I’ll archive this thread on sup/tg/, and Thread #3 should be up no later than Monday afternoon. In the meantime, please send me any comments, criticisms, questions, and suggestions you may have relating to the narrative or the meta and I’ll make sure to answer them as quickly as possible.

While I am happy our boy is getting braver and becoming a pretty solid trainer I think we're getting sidetracked from our main goal, once we're done dealing with those guys we should do Nathan's deliver and go get some badges.

Yo OP, thanks for the interesting quest! I was sidetracked for a bit with other things in my life, but I really enjoyed coming back to read through it when I had the time.

>>4187124
I dunno if this whole 'being headhunted' fiasco is going to be a one-off thing. It might happen continuously throughout the adventure, or something; then again, it doesn't seem like Walter could really concentrate on getting badges if he had to constantly be on the run.
>>

To be honest with you, I was somewhat worried that thread #2 was beginning to feel less like a Pokémon quest as it went on. Even though this business with the labyrinth and the aftermath of that incident was a completely optional part of the story, I didn’t want to simply wave it off at the expense of flow and pacing. Hopefully, near the beginning of the next thread, I can neatly wrap up this “arc” if you will, and get back to a more standard journey for the time being. I’ll do my best to strike a balance between all of the elements of a Pokémon narrative moving forward.

No problem, things happen and I completely understand. I'm glad that you're still onboard and enjoying this quest.

At first, I thought it would be somewhat challenging to make Walter a "free man" without also making the opposition look hilariously incompetent in the process. You'll have more run ins with this organization in the future, but I'll try to confine these interactions to battles, conversations, chase scenes, or simply you observing the result of their actions.
