The first thing that hits you when you step onto the deck is not a bullet, but the acrid smell of burning diesel and smoke.

With the formerly visible grey sky now being blotted out with the rising plumes of smoke, it makes it hard to tell where you initially are. The rain falling against your exposed skin is no longer cold, but warm and sticky as you maneuver yourself away from the doorframe, so that Cinder can safely move forward without running into you.

“Do you see anything?!”

Cinder calls out to you without the use of her headset, making no pretenses of stealth. You can barely see her bright red hair through the thickening haze, but you can clearly picture the motes of worry that have more than likely sprung to her eyes.

“Smoke’s too thick – watch yourself!” You shout back, pulling your rifle tight against your chest as you make your way forwards, hyper aware of the way the boat creaks and groans under you. The crashing of water against the metal structure is even louder now, and you have no doubt that if you had gone deeper within it, chances are it’d be damn hard for you to get out.

A bullet whizzes through the smoke, and you hit the deck faster than you ever have before.

The year is 2030, and competitive gaming has taken the world by storm. After a vicious encounter with the player known as editWorld that was cut short by an explosion, you, Wolfgang O’Neal, have now followed him to the surface of the battleground.

Unfortunately, said battleground is on fire, and your head just almost became fused with it.

“You hear that, Cinder?” You hiss into your receiver, looking around quickly and only just pulling yourself behind a shipping crate before another bullet sounds off, hitting the space where you had just been.

Well, you certainly haven’t got any breathing room.

“Yep, and I’m sorely fuckin’ unequipped for this!” She responds whole-heartedly from somewhere on the deck, and you catch a little “oop!” as another gunshot is heard, most likely from her taking cover.

Looks like you’re at a disadvantage, both from being robbed of sight and being pinned down.

You’ve made it through worse.

What will you do, Wolfgang?

“Cinder, you’re a whole lot faster than I am, think you could get ahead and take a look at things?”

You say into the receiver, immediately going to rifle through your bag in order to reacquaint yourself with your arsenal. I mean, it hasn’t been that long since you’ve taken a gander at it, but knowing your options is way better than going in half baked. At least, that’s probably what Fletcher would say, only with more eloquence.

“Sure, I’ll give it a look – not like waiting around’s gonna do us any good!”

A few moments pass, and another gunshot goes off, but this time it’s followed by an incredibly loud clanging that reverberates through the air. Whoever’s firing seems to be pretty fucking accurate – meaning that they most likely have thermal vision of some sort. You sigh deeply – one of many over the past few weeks – and take a look at your loadout.

>Inventory:
>Binoculars
>Grenades w/ additional smoke screen effect x2

Wow, that’s actually pretty piss poor. Hard to use a smokescreen when there’s already one that they can see through! You remember Cinder mentioning that she has an extra health patch on her, though, meaning that you have a very limited amount of padding to work with – whether it’s used on you or her or not.

“Keep your eyes on the prize, asshole!” A voice booms a short distance away from you, and you find yourself ducking away from yet another bullet. A second later, Edit is upon you.

The boy’s face is twisted into one of extreme anger, swinging his wickedly sharp knife in wide arcs as he attempts to carve more hit points off of you.

“Clever fucking trick with that knife, you cunt! All items, no skill, just like I fucking said!”

Pure venom drips from his words as he attempts to corner you against a set of boxes, despite how hypocritical they are. You’ve determined through Cinder and experience that he’s in the possession of some form of haste item, which makes it all the more irritating that he’s decided to give the both of you shit for it.

“Hey, pot. Meet kettle.” You snipe back at him, raising your rifle to knock away a blow, aiming it at his chest and going to pull the trigger. Before you can, you find his foot darting upwards to knock the gun to the side, causing you to destroy a few boxes with gunfire.

Go fuck yourself!” He screams, causing a petty smirk to come to your face.

Now that you know what buttons to press, he’s not nearly as irritating.

In that moment, it’s as if something clicks inside your head.

The man rushing towards you with pure hatred in his eyes is looking directly into your eyes, only paying attention to your face and nothing else. You’re not sure if the depths of his anger flow that deep, or if he’s just stupidly unaware. Regardless, you have the right amount of time to let go of your rifle that’s strapped to your chest, and dart your arm down to grab at the knife sheathed on your belt.

You’re sick of this. Time to put him down.

https://youtu.be/plgx--ABInA

Jerking your arm up, you deflect his knife in a shower of sparks, the strength of the action enough to throw him off balance a bit. You don’t allow him any breathing room, and you swing your other fist up to clock him in the jaw, causing you to hear his teeth clack together from the force of the blow.

He weakly flails his knife as he attempts to right himself, but you move forward with determination. You catch the blade with your own and wrench it from his hand, bringing it around and stab him in the arm. Edit yelps in pain and hurriedly puts his hand inside of his bag, and you see the beginnings of golden electricity build around his body.

Too bad he’s not prepared for actual talent.

You let go of the knife still buried in his arm and punch him as hard as you can in the stomach, causing him to double over for air despite the haste flowing through his system. Before it can hit the ground, you catch the boy’s knife and jam it harshly into his side, making him let out yet another scream.

“How’s it feel, Edit?”

You begin to run your mouth as you drive a knee into the disoriented teen’s face, securing a hand tightly around his wrist. It doesn’t matter how fast he is if you have a solid hold on him, and all too quickly, his haste flickers away as he tries desperately to pull himself away from you.

He doesn’t even try to hit you or anything. He’s just trying to run away, perhaps because he’s overtaken by anger, or even fear.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. You’re sure that Cinder would have offed him if he hadn’t caught her by surprise.

Edit finally pulls a pistol from it’s sheathe and raises it towards you, and you swat it away just as he fires, almost similar to how he did the same to you only seconds prior.

This has gone on far enough. How do you want to finish him?

As much as you’d seriously love to make a show of taking him out, you realize that Cinder is off in dangerous territories. You know well enough that Sky is a much more serious threat than Edit, and any second used to take the heat off Cinder and locate her is too precious to waste. So, without another word uttered, you yank the boy towards you, rip your knife from his arm, and shove it right beneath his chin and into his head.

He falls with a gurgle yet does not disappear. You look down at him, and you can’t resist just in case his stream is still on.

You step over him, crouch once, and dash towards the direction you saw Cinder go.

What, it’s multiplayer! You may have been a professional at one point, but you aren’t above being cheeky. Fuck that dude.

Moving into the smoke, you hear the occasional sound of gunfire somewhere ahead of you. There has been no word from Cinder of her scouting efforts, and rightfully so – if she’s distracted by Sky, then there’s no room for error. Remembering that loud clang from earlier, you make the connection that it was probably a bullet being deflected off the flat end of Cinder’s sword, showing how precise both your partner and your opponent are.

“Man, what is it about me that keeps causing trouble?”

You murmur to yourself, taking cover behind one of the various buildings dotted around the deck of the ship. You don’t have a lot of time to waste judging by the frequency of fire ahead of you and rushing in without a care in the world will only be detrimental to you.

>Get ahold of Cinder first and foremost – you are blind in this situation, and you need to know if she’s spotted Sky before you can take action. [This will require a LOW roll.]
>Run forwards and try to draw Sky’s fire onto yourself – it’ll be risky, but she physically can’t shoot two people at once, and it’ll allow Cinder to roam free. [This will require a LOW roll.]

Knowing that rushing out immediately probably isn’t the best idea, you press yourself against the wall and raise a hand to your earpiece. As tempting as getting a shot off on her is, she is a much more difficult opponent than Edit, and should be treated as such.

“Cinder, are you able to respond?” You hiss into the microphone, wincing as another shot goes off in the distance. You don’t want to doubt your friend’s abilities, but if Sky can take advantage of ricochets to get her desired result, you also don’t want to discount her being taken off guard.

Warscape players are scary nowadays!

Thankfully, you’re in luck, because her response is almost immediate.

“Fuckin’ barely—” Another gunshot cuts off her words, but she’s quick to continue even amidst dodging, “she’s up in the tower! Can’t get close, she’s got some form of—”

An extremely loud burst of static causes you to recoil and grit your teeth, the sheer volume of it enough to give you a slight headache. Judging by Cinder’s words, Sky is on the highest point of the ship, which is either the captain’s floor or the roof of it. Knowing the angle of attack will be helpful, but you’re infinitely more curious about why Cinder couldn’t get close.

“Cinder, are you there? Don’t leave me hanging.” You say into the microphone, nervously grasping at your rifle as your heart beats against your ribs.

No response.

Fuck.

“Okay, she’s not dead, at least.” You say to yourself, biting your lip as your mind races. “I’m sure I would have gotten a notification if she was.”

But the gunfire has stopped. The smoke hangs in the air. The only thing that greets you is the crackling of fire, the creaking of the sinking ship, and waves.

You don’t like this one bit. What the fuck just happened?

>Test the waters – hold a piece of rubble around the corner and see if you’re shot at.

A few moments pass, and then you let out a long sigh. Staying put won’t do anyone any good, so you crouch as low to the ground as you can and emerge from behind cover, praying that your head won’t be taken off the second that you do.

No gunfire is heard. Only eerie silence punctuated by the crashing of waves.

You don’t recall signing up for a horror game.

In any case, you won’t caught as a sitting duck. Making yourself as small as a target as you possibly can, you move forward, being sure to position yourself behind some form of cover every few seconds. Still no word from Cinder, or any sign that she’s died – no sign from Sky, either. You had made an educated guess that she was using some type of thermal sight to see through the smoke, and yet nothing fires at you. Either you were somehow wrong, or she’s on the move.

You pray that the second isn’t true. These mind games are already fucking with you enough, you don’t need an actually capable Warscape player on your ass to top it off.

As you move forward, the smoke becomes less thick, although there’s still enough where seeing is moderately difficult. Now, however, you can pick out the looming tower in front of you – you hadn’t paid it much mind earlier, but knowing that Sky’s within it somehow makes it more nerve-wracking. You don’t know the layout, you don’t know what she’s planned…hell, you don’t even know where your fucking partner is or how long it’ll take for the ship to sink.

“Going to get her for that later,” you murmur with a sigh, raising your rifle and sweeping the area just in case something jumps out at you. It occurs to you that without your partner around, the promise of healing in the future has been revoked, meaning that every bit of health you have will count immensely.

I’m glad I used them earlier, but I’ll be damned if I wouldn’t like some patches right about now.

Given the general silence and lack of bullets on the boat, you figure that now’s as good as a time as any to restock on supplies. You’ve always had an uncanny knack for finding things in hidden areas in this game, so why stop now, especially when you have a free moment?

You look around from your position and spot a small looking outpost just across from you, with the door slightly ajar.

If there’s going to be loot anywhere, you’d bet that it’s in there!

Creeping across the open space, your body is tense as it prepares for that sniper shot to ring out. Nothing comes, however, and you’re free to enter and maneuver a nearby box so that the door won’t close on you. If you need a quick escape, you really don’t want a door in the way.

The room is relatively small, and apparently doesn’t lead anywhere. There are a few windows to your left, and a long desk with quite a few drawers sit in front of them. Atop them sit a few computers, and rather than identifying how that links with the map, you immediately start rifling through the drawers. As you go through more and more of them, dejection starts to spread through you, as nothing of use turns up.

“Guess my luck had to run out sometime or another,” you sigh deeply, raising a hand to pinch the bridge of your nose. First your partner disappears, and now nothing is turning up on your little scavenging adjournment! How could things get worse from here, really?

You hear the sound of a gun firing.

You really shouldn’t have opened your mouth.

(Hey! I’m pretty tired, so I’m going to call it here for the evening! Thanks a lot for reading, and I sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed! Please leave any comments, critiques, questions, or concerns – I’d like to make the quest less shit if I could manage it. Have a great night everyone, and remember – hail 0phelia!)

Thankfully, you’re remaining as alert as you are for a reason. You immediately hit the floor and roll under the desk, just in time to see the bullet go clean through the metal wall, leaving a sizeable hole in its wake. Moments later, smoke begins to properly bleed into the room, where it had only coasted past the doorway.

You hadn’t noticed that before. The metal of the shipping container she had shot earlier had only been dented, but now there was a fucking hole in the wall.

She must have alternate ammunition. How quaint. If that hit me in the head, it might have killed me outright.

Knowing that you can’t afford to be pinned down here, your mind races into overdrive. Plan after plan courses through your head, causing you to grip your rifle as tight as you can.

For one, you could make a mad dash towards the tower, dodging her to the best of your ability. It would open up an opportunity for her to hit you, but you’re agile enough that you might be able to dodge, or at least ensure that it doesn’t hit you in the head.

For two, you could go and look for Cinder’s corpse to confirm what happened to her. Earlier, you had noticed that Edit’s body hadn’t disappeared, meaning that bodies don’t vanish in a 2v2. This means you could score any item she had on her at her time of passing, and you know for a fact that she wouldn’t care if it meant taking these fuckers down.

And third, you could simply tough it out and sit here. You don’t find yourself wanting to stay in this building, but you have it in you to wage a war of attrition and hope you hit her in the process. You’re still unsure as to how much the water has risen on the boat, and maybe after a little bit, the smoke will have cleared so you can maneuver throughout the area better.

Chuckling nervously, you prepare to make your move.

How do you want to approach this?

Very good idea, guys! Writing now.

In that moment, it’s like a light bulb goes off inside of your head.

It really is a curious thing that bodies might not disappear in this game mode. This could be for a variety of reasons – to use that body as a decoy against enemies, to serve as a reminder that your friends got taken out before you did, or even just for taunting when one eventually wins the match. However, if the body sticks around, it’s only logical that their items would too, right?

You had first considered finding Cinder’s, but you don’t know where she is at the moment. Hell, you don’t even know if she’s alive or dead. You do know, however, exactly where Edit is after you finished him off.

He might have some haste items left over. That’s far too good to ignore.

Moving out from underneath the desk, you know that you have to act quick. If Sky’s a competent player, she may realize what you’re going for, and try her best to stop you from getting there. As well as that, with the boat sinking, you’re on ultra-limited time – but it’s a good thing that haste practically removes the need for time!

Counting down from three, you spring up into a sprinting position and book it out the door, her gun going off only moments after you pass the threshold. You refuse to look behind you to see what kind of bullet she used, partly because you’re afraid of what you’d see, and instead pivot on your foot to head left.

To put it frankly, you’re running for your life, not caring to take cover in the interest of expediency.

It may be your mind playing tricks on you, but it seems like the smoke has lessened somewhat, and you’re able to find Edit’s corpse. It’s exactly where it was, face still frozen in an emotion that lies somewhat between fear and anger. You wonder if there’s a spectator mode of sorts, or if he’s so angry that he’s stopped the stream. That would be pretty fucking funny, honestly.

Unfortunately, you see that the way his body fell after you killed him, his body is practically sticking out from cover in its entirety. To get that haste will require being speedy with your hands, as well as your innate ability to dodge gunfire.

Just another day in the life of Wolfgang, really.

(Sorry for the slight wait, got pulled into a game of Civ 5 with friends! Zulus are alright, I’ll keep you posted.)

With a flash of worry overcoming your face, you concoct a plan as fast as you can under the current circumstances. Your hand darts into your bag and secures itself around the pack of grenades you had bought from the Gallery, tearing one of them from the ribbon and tossing it behind you. As soon as it leaves your hand, a high pitched beeping breaks through the haze of distant water and your own thoughts.

Moments later, you hear the sharp sound of an explosion, followed by subtle hissing. You immediately surge forth and throw yourself behind a set of boxes, snagging Edit’s leg and pulling the corpse after you. Another round goes off, but you don’t bother to see where it goes, as it doesn’t hit you nor the dead boy in front of you.

Holy shit, that actually worked!

The relief that comes over you is palpable. You waste no time in going for Edit’s item bag and rummaging around it in, more comfortable now that you’re in cover. You’re not quite sure how much ammunition Sky has left on her, but assuming such things never turns out well, so you’ll stick to the following theory – she has a lot more than you, and she’s dangerous enough that if you’re inattentive, your goose will be cooked.

Ah, the glory of war.

Closing your eyes and praying you’re not taken out by a wayward ricochet, you feel your fingers brush up against something smooth and vaguely cylindrical. Feeling a sliver of hope worm its way into your heart, you grasp it and pull it out, eager to see what it is.

In your hands lies a long black tube, with gold decals and embroidery interspersed throughout. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason behind the designs, but you do spot a name across the cork of the tube as you give it a look over, almost in the form of a maker’s mark.

>R. A. Blackstone

Interesting. Just like with Dahlia, that’s another avenue of something you’ll have to look into at some point. If, you know, you were ever interested in actually continuing to play this under low stakes circumstances.

Y-You’re not saying that you’re interested or anything, though.

Really.

Tempted by the promises of extra loot and being able to spite Edit by robbing him, you continue to go through the bag in an attempt to scour out any other things of use. You can look at the tube and its contents later, taking Edit’s things and using them to benefit yourself comes first – especially when you’re now down to only a grenade and a pair of binoculars.

Come to think of it, you’ve only ever used those things once. You should probably swap them out at some point.

Unfortunately, the rest of Edit’s bag is barren. Cinder had implied that he mostly stocks his inventory with haste judging by her findings, and he most likely got pretty fucked up by your suicide knife maneuver, which explains the lack of healing patches on his person. If this tube is what contains all of his haste – which you reckon it has to at this point - then it tracks that there’d be nothing left over.

Well, at least you got the tube! That’s more than you had on your way over here, at least.

You’re jarred from your inner monologue by another round of sniper fire, but this time, it goes far over your head. However, rather than hearing it embed in a wall, you hear a loud clang instead, making you hurriedly yank Edit up from the ground and in front of you.

You feel the vibration of the bullet hitting the body, and you’re certain that if it were competitive, you’d be covered in blood.

More ricochets. With your back to one of the many buildings leading below deck, you’re not safe here. It’s time to move.

You’re not used to having an enemy this crafty. At least 0phelia was somewhat straightforward in her match.

>Go directly towards the tower without haste – you want to save it for when you need it.

It takes a moment to steel your resolve as you fish out the last grenade in your bag. You’re certain that the owner of the Gallery had much different ideas in mind as to how you were going to use these, but at least they’re going to fulfill some purpose, and that’s of being distractions!

If Cinder is dead, she’ll probably give you hell for your antics. You wouldn’t exactly blame her.

With all of the force you can muster, you toss the grenade far in the direction of Sky, hoping to god that it will throw her off guard in some fashion. After waiting an additional second, you move out from cover and book it towards the tower, running faster than you ever have in recent memory. You wouldn’t allow her a shot on you, not when your friend’s pride – and your own, you guess – are on the line!

You hear the explosion as the grenade goes off somewhere in front of you, followed by another, smaller explosion. It gives you momentary pause as you dart forwards, vaulting over boxes and moving in and out of cover. It must have pierced some bit of machinery, but you can’t allow yourself to dwell on it, especially when there’s no gunfire yet.

Maybe the universe finally decided to give you a break?

Emerging from the smoke, you’re clearly able to see the captain’s floor and the area leading up to it, yet there’s still no sight of Sky. There’s a single double door leading into the building, and to your surprise, the door is wide open and blackened due to an explosion.

Judging by the smoke curling off the door, and what appears to be a wrecked and sparking sentry turret in front of you, it appears that you got much luckier than you had first realized.

The words of Cinder reverberate in your head – that she couldn’t get close because of something. You can make the mental leap that the something was probably that turret, and that it couldn’t see through smoke, considering you weren’t turned into Swiss cheese by moving towards it.

Fuck, that could have been close – good thing you didn’t rush in right away!

Anywho, you’re now in front of the tower. How do you want to enter?

Late night update for the win - got pulled away for the majority of the afternoon! Writing now.
>>
>>4159367

(Okay, now I sleep. See you in the morning, and have a great night, everyone!)

Moving as close to the wall as you can, you immediately press your face to a window so you can see further within the building. At first nothing stands out to you as your eyes adjust to the interior, but you’re able to determine that it’s a fairly cluttered room with a door leading down to the depths, and a ladder leading to the next floor.

Man, you’d think that the map generation would put another staircase leading up just for ease of access, but no! Gotta love it when the devs try to make your life more difficult.

Focusing on the minutia of the room rather than the entrances and exits, you just barely manage to spot a flicker of light coursing across one of the rungs of the ladder. It’s hard to tell what’s generating it, or even what color it is, but it’s noticeable and frequent enough to draw attention to it. The fact that it exists at all is quite worrying, and you’re thankful that you took the time to spot it, because now you can avoid it when you get your ass up there.

It’s at that moment when you hear the sound of metal whirring from above you, and just as you look up to see what the noise is, you catch a flash of white gloves as a small metallic box is tossed out towards the smoke. It’s in no danger of hitting you, and you’re able to watch as it sails towards the ground, the impact causing you to wince due to the sheer volume of it.

Seconds later, the box begins to grow legs.

You briefly glance at the smoking sentry in front of the door, then back at the deploying object.

She has more than one of them. Great.

>Throw yourself through the window – you might suffer damage from the glass, but it’s the quickest way. [This will require a LOW roll.]

We should try to maintain stealth advantage and use the haste to help us kill her when she's within our sight and range of using the haste thing

Thinking fast on your feet, you immediately pivot and dart for the open door, praying that you’re faster than the sentry she’s just dropped on your head. You catch a glimpse of it over your shoulder – it has four legs that have fully developed, along with a slowly lengthening gun barrel that protrudes from the smoke.

Just as you make it beyond the threshold of the door, you hear a bark of gunfire from behind you, and you feel an electrical current sear through your leg. Pulling yourself around the corner and onto the ground, you watch as the two other bullets that followed it collide with the wall. You grimace – either that sentry fires in a controlled burst, or you got as lucky as you could have in that circumstance.

>Player: N0v4_c43s4r
>HP: 80/100 (-15 HP)

Gritting your teeth, you spring up and dart towards the ladder, very mindful of the rung that’s illuminated. At this stage, triggering a trap could cost you, so you’re glad you took that time to actually examine the room – unfortunately, as soon as your head pops up in view of the window, you hear the sentry gear up again.

Forcing yourself up the ladder as fast as possible, the windows below you shatter due to the hail of gunfire, the sound deafening as you try to focus on climbing. You know that if you stop for even a second, shit might get pretty rough for you, but you’re well aware that you’re gonna need a game plan for when you get to the next floor.

You don’t know what else she has up her sleeve, after all. She’s proven how crafty she is, so to beat her strats, you’ll have to make some on your own! Easy enough, right?

>As soon as you’ve passed the threshold and out of the sight of the turret - examine the room carefully.

As you climb the ladder, you grab your rifle and aim it towards the opening, very mindful of the deafening gunfire nipping at your heels. You figure that this is as decent of a strategy as any – if there’s something that triggers on sight, it may be attracted to the grenade. As well as that, the noise may be able to distract Sky just a little bit, especially if she’s on her way down to deal with you.

Too many maneuvers to consider, too many factors. You’re starting to wonder if you’re just cursed!

You pull the trigger on the grenade launcher attachment, and a small ball flies up through the opening, bouncing off of the wall and out of sight into the room. You keep moving upwards despite this, and hope that whatever lies within is taken out by the blast. Just as you reach the cusp of the ladder, the grenade in the room detonates, making some dust fall from the ceiling. Seconds later, however, another explosion follows the first, making you pause.

Did you actually hit something up there? Holy shit, looks like it wasn’t a wasted move after all! You make a silent note to thank the owner of the Gallery even harder the next time you see him.

If you do, of course.

>UAG-36 grenade launcher: 2/3 (-1).

Pulling yourself up into the room and out of the line of sight of the sentry, you’re able to observe it better. For one, rather than a ladder ascending upwards, this time there is a proper staircase leading to the next floor of the captain’s building. There is a set of windows that face both the ocean and the actual boat, and at this level, you’re far and above the rising smoke that lingers over the deck.

Hanging from the ceiling lies a set of wires, and the floor in the middle of the room is blackened. At one point they must have been strung up, but it seems your grenade – whether it was the object or the resulting shrapnel – took care of that.

It looks like you managed to take care of that obstacle. Score one for you!

Rolling your shoulders and preparing yourself for any more sudden moves on Sky’s part, you barrel up the stairs as quick as you can, rifle at the ready. Nothing seems to immediately jump down the metal staircase at you, and you’re able to reach the top with relative ease, eyes darting around the room for any obvious or hidden threats.

The room is empty.

A bead of nervousness worms its way into you as you advance, sweeping the room for traps as you do. There are no visible wires, there are no strange lights, there’s not anything of note. There’s another set of stairs leading upwards, along with a few bits of scattered machinery that have been knocked to the floor.

If there’s the captain’s floor and the roof above you, that might mean that Sky hasn’t bothered for any traps in this location. She may have ran out in the process of trapping the rooms below and above you, or she may simply be trying to mindfuck you into being entirely cautious. You appreciate someone who can play mind games without belittling you, but at the same time, it’s super fucking annoying to fight against!

You wish Cinder were still around. At least then you’d be able to make some sort of plan and have a second opinion, rather than having a giant mental monologue.

You sigh your government mandated sigh and move further into the room, gun at the ready for any more shenanigans or chicanery. The fact that the sound of the water is slightly muted this high up only serves to enhance the threatening silence surrounding the room, and despite the apparent evidence that things are okay, you can’t shake the bad feeling gnawing at your gut.

Rather than taking the immediate path up the stairs, you find that the bad feeling in your gut is growing harder to ignore, and so you take a step towards the window that overlooks the ship. The silence hanging over the air is almost too much for you, and the only thing that stops you from cracking open the window to get some sound in the room is the fact that the turret might see you.

Looking out across the deck of the ship, the smoke is finally starting to part somewhat. Maybe it’s due to the explosion only being at the bottom of the ship, or some other external circumstance, but the smoke bleeding onto the deck has ceased, and all that’s left is whatever remains in the air.

You can see Edit’s body from here. You can’t see Cinder’s.

That brings a bit of hope to your mind, that you still have her around, but she could have easily been hauled overboard. And regardless if she’s still alive or not, she’s not giving you any indication to believe that she’s the former, meaning that you still have to rely on your own skills and guile.

You’re snapped out of your mental reverie by something appearing in your vision. From above, another box falls, but one that’s significantly larger than the apparent sentry box. You can see that there’s a rope tied to the top, which explains why it is coming towards the building in a hurried arc. You immediately move away from the window, but you notice that it’s not heading towards you – it’s going to the floor below.

The sound of the window breaking is incredibly loud, and the bark of the sentry turret firing at the disturbance is even louder. You stand there in silence as you observe the rope that’s now in front of you.

Did…did Sky miscalculate? Does she still think you’re on that floor? Why did she even do that?

>Go up the stairs – if she’s not expecting you, might as well ride that wave.
>Climb up the rope to get to the roof quicker – time is of the essence, and you just got a new avenue of approach.
>Look over the room – something still doesn’t feel quite right, and you have a gut feeling for a reason.

The sound of a single footstep makes your blood run cold.

Slowly averting your eyes from the rope that’s supporting the box, and distancing your mind from the rampant sound of gunfire below, you then settle on the opening that leads to the captain’s floor. It is no longer empty. A lone girl stands there, with a pistol that looks big enough to stop a bull in its tracks pointed at you.

Her brown hair is as long as it is in real life, coming down to the small of her back and having slightly messy bangs. You’re close enough that you can see her eyes – brown – that are widened in slight surprise. She appears to be wearing a long white coat of sorts, and a button-up shirt with an armored vest underneath – beneath that, her skirt is buckled to her waist, and if you aren’t mistaken, she’s wearing jeans under that. To top of the ensemble, white gloves adorn her hands, which are firmly wrapped around the handle of the gun.

A moment of silence passes, due to both of your mutual shock.

It’s broken by the flash of the gun nearly blinding you, and you only barely jerk yourself out of the way of its path. She wastes no time descending upon you with a knife in her other hand, which you manage to stop with the butt of your rifle. It would have gone into your heart otherwise.

“You’re not the one I was looking for,” she states neutrally, ducking the punch you send at her and springing halfway across the room.

She glances towards the staircase leading downwards briefly, and that’s enough to confirm that Cinder may have been hiding this entire time. Sneaky girl, that one. You’ll have to give her shit later for being silent! You aren’t allowed to contemplate potential retribution further however, as she fires the gun again, the shot going over your shoulder and shattering the window behind you.

All of the noise that was blocked out rushes in at once, and you’re aware that you might not have much time to react. Your target is in front of you, having given up her sniper’s perch to do so.

That bad feeling is back and stronger than ever.

There is fire in your eyes as you grab the black cylinder out of your bag, dodge-rolling to the side and behind a desk as Sky shoots off another round at you. You’re not quite sure how this item works, so you tear off the cork emblazoned with the maker’s name, and slam it back into your mouth.

Nothing comes at first, but you could swear that you hear a little beeping from within, almost entirely imperceptible were it not so close to your face. A moment later, a colorless liquid comes out from inside and into your mouth, the potion possessing a strangely citrus quality to it. Nothing happens for a second, and as you brace for another pistol shot to come your way, something hits you fast and hard.

https://youtu.be/Dn4F42bG9Dg

It’s almost as if time has slowed down.

An intense burning comes over the inside of your body, thrumming under your skin in hot electric waves. It feels like your heart has kicked into overdrive, like your senses have heightened, like you’ve just activated a livewire inside your very body. It’s then you can see it – the golden, electric motes dancing across your skin like fairy lights. You grit your teeth, and you stand up.

Sky is standing directly across from you. She fires the pistol. You swat it aside with the broad end of your knife that you weren’t even directly aware you had drawn.

A second later, you’re across the room.

Hurtling towards her with a scream, your knife flashes up and rips the sleeve of her coat, going clean through her upper forearm with no resistance whatsoever. She lets out a gasp of shock and pain before righting herself, firing the gun off into your torso, her eyes turning deathly serious as she does.

You don’t feel it.

>Player: N0v4_c43s4r
>HP: 55/100 (-25 HP)

Ripping it out and going for a stab to the throat, she brings up her own knife in the nick of time to prevent the fatal blow, rearing back and smashing her forehead into your nose. Following up that attack, she attempts to sweep you off your feet with a leg, but you stand strong in the face of her attack. You manage to score another vicious strike on her arm, and it’s at that point that she plants a foot on your stomach and uses it to shove herself away from you, sending herself down the fucking stairwell with reckless abandon.

It takes a negligible amount of time for you to pull your shotgun from its holder and aim it at the falling woman, who’s face is one of dawning realization. As you were certain to plug in your flechette rounds before the match started, the resounding boom that erupts from the barrel sounds like thunder striking the ground, every bit of the shot going directly towards Sky.

However, she’s just a bit too prepared.

With a frankly impressive motion, the girl spins in the air and tears off her overcoat, fanning it outwards and absorbing nearly all of the blast. In spots you can see that it tears, but it seems that none of the shell hit her in lieu of her impromptu defense. In the same motion, she raises the oversized pistol up with her other hand and pulls the trigger, hitting the ground shoulders first.

The bullet flies towards you, and were it not for your haste, you’d be a bit slow on the draw. Thankfully, as well as your physical speed being increased, it seems your mental processing has also been heightened. Ah, the joys of haste in this game. The amount of items that have been added are utterly obscene, but not all of them are so bad.

With only seconds to react, how do you deal with the shot?

(This is where I’m gonna call it for the night, as I have some stuff to do tomorrow! Thank you very much for coming around to read, and I hope you enjoyed if you did! Please let me know any comments, compliments, questions, critiques, or concerns that you have – I’d like to make this quest less shit if I could! Have a great night, anons, and I hope you’re doing well.)

You curse to yourself as you raise your gun, uncaring of the bullet that’s about to hit you with the promise of being able to hit her. You level the gun right at Sky and pull the trigger, ready to spring at her as quick as possible so you can ride out this haste. The shot itself is enough to send the approaching bullet off its course, although it does still graze your shoulder.

>Player: N0v4_c43s4r
>HP: 40/100 (-10 HP)

Sky can’t get off the ground fast enough, but you see her lift her body up towards the oncoming blast, and makes sure that her torso is what’s primarily hit by it. The sheer force of it sends her spiraling back out of sight, but you were able to spot that she soaked up the worst of it with her armored vest. You curse to yourself, reloading your shotgun as you do.

Fuck! You hate it when your opponents are this tricky! You’re aware that Cinder may very well be at the bottom floor of this now, but you don’t know how hurt she is, nor how Sky intends to deal with her. Sighing deeply to yourself, you consider what you know.

Sky has rolled out of sight, but unless she rolled directly into the hatch where the ladder is, she may still be in that room. You know that you dealt her a great bit of damage, but you’re unaware if she’s healed it yet, meaning that time is even shorter than first thought. With your haste being finite, your opponent being slippery, and your partner MIA, you’re in a very interesting circumstance.

How do you want to proceed?

>WARNING! Haste will last for two more posts.

>>
>>4162197

Gritting your teeth and forcing yourself to stay put, you stow away your shotgun once more and raise the bullpup, jamming it tight against your stomach. The haste that is coursing relentlessly through your body want you to move, to expend your energy, but logic dictates that you cannot give her any opening whatsoever. With this grenade launcher, you won’t even have to worry about that little detail!

>UAG-36 grenade launcher: 1/3 (-1).

The spring fires and sends the ball down the staircase, and it quickly skitters out of your view. You can’t help but find a little bit of humor in the fact that this is the second time you’ve shot a grenade into that room – both times to counteract the unknown.

Seconds later, the explosion happens, and you hear more windows break due to the sheer pressure and shrapnel that it lets off. You take an additional moment to listen, resisting against the haste thrumming against your skin for just a little bit longer in order to ascertain if she’s still in the room or not.

You hear a distant thump as something hits the floor, followed by a pitter-patter of footsteps.

Fuck, you must have missed or knocked her down the hole. Either way, she now has a lead on you. Why doesn’t luck ever pan out in your fucking favor? If you were a lesser man, you would have ripped off the grenade launcher out of rage and sent it hurtling out the nearest window, but you don’t. It might come in handy later, even if this pisses you off at the moment.

Curiously enough, you don’t hear any gunfire or the turret going off. Your brow furrows – is Cinder still down there? You know for a fact you heard it go off earlier, but you have no fucking idea what’s going on down there, considering there’s two floors between you and there.

Gotta love multi-level maps.

>WARNING! Haste will expire in the next post.

>Rush down the stairs and dive through the hatch – you’ll use your haste to dodge the turret fire while searching for Sky. [This will require a LOW roll.]

You shake your head and drop into a sprinting position, darting down the stairs as fast as you can. You can sense that the haste will end at any moment now, and you swore to yourself that you would make the most of it as long as you have it – with that being said, you practically throw yourself through the hatch and hit the ground running.

The turret placed outside immediately swivels in your direction, barrel beginning to heat up as it fires at you. Not allowing your haste-assisted momentum to fade, you bust out a cartwheel to dodge the suppressing fire that the turret lays down upon you, and every single shot misses. As soon as you’re back on your feet, your head is darting around the room, immediately looking for any signs of Cinder or Sky.

Neither are visible in the room, but you can make out something moving through the lessening smoke on the outside – Sky’s figure bolting to the other side of the ship, her pistol and knife gripped tightly in her hands. You have no idea where her sniper rifle went, but the fact that it’s gone bodes very well for you, as that puts a hard cap on her available range.

It also helps that she isn’t looking over her shoulders. She must assume that the turret is keeping you at bay decently enough, allowing her to make her way to a well-guarded location without too much hassle. You can’t blame her for that – it’s what an experienced player should do in this situation, and you’re willing to concede that it might be what you would do as well.

Unfortunately, she isn’t accounting for who you are.

With the last vestiges of haste pulsing through you, you prepare to make use of it in one final fucking hurrah – you don’t care how you do it, but you’re going to make it count.

You’re feeling lucky, after all.

...and the sky's the limit. Writing now!

>>4163114

There is no wasted movement as you sprint forwards, darting out of the way of every bullet sent your way by the turret. At certain points you can almost feel them brushing past your skin, coming mere centimeters from robbing you of every last point of health, and yet you’re able to keep yourself afloat with the last vestiges of your haste. Once you make it past the sentry, you swing around and kick it as hard as you can, sending it off its legs and causing a spark of pain to ignite in your foot.

Goddamn, kicking an entirely metal structure still hurts! It doesn’t take any of your HP away, but your now hurting foot is a stark reminder to not kick solid objects.

You put that momentary incident from your mind and brace yourself in place, watching as Sky runs as hard as she can. Going over many plans in your head, you decide that the best way to do this is from a distance, just in case she lives.

As well as that, you’re gonna throw down a one liner. Who the fuck doesn’t throw down one-liners? Cowards, that’s who. You may be a lot of things, but one thing you’ve always respected is the purity and valuableness of healthy smack talk, as well as one-liners.

“Hey, Sky!” You call across the field, lining her up in your scope.

You can immediately see her look over her shoulder, although her expression is unreadable from this distance.

“They say that the sky’s the limit, and it looks like you’ve reached yours!”

Immediately pulling the trigger on the grenade launcher, you watch the increasingly familiar view of the ball exiting the chamber and soaring through the air towards Sky. However, you’re taken off guard when you hear the sound of gunfire erupt from above and behind you, and a single bullet races through the air towards Sky.

It collides with the back of her head, causing her to stop dead in her tracks as her body first recoils, and then goes limp. A second later, the grenade hits her right between the shoulder blades as she begins to fall back, and the explosion sends her flying straight up into the air in a visceral display of abject force.

The world is silent as she hits the ground again, landing directly on her head and shoulders. If this were real, she would have broken her neck.

You immediately look behind you with raised eyebrows, and find your partner – who is now missing her hoodie and is down to a black tank top – leaning against the railing of the roof and looking at you with a coy grin on her face. In front of her, you spot the sniper rifle that Sky must have possessed at some point.

She wordlessly holds up a shattered earpiece as soon as you open your mouth to speak.

Did Sky shoot her in the head and break the earpiece? Fuck, that’s scary.

You can’t help the smile that breaks across your face at the sight of your companion, which only makes her grin grow as she hops over the railing, being sure to latch on to the rope that’s attached to the box as she does. She slides down the thing pretty fast, and as soon as she properly lands on the box, she does a flip off of it and lands on her feet in front of you.

A bit overdramatic, but so are you – looks like you’re in good company as always.

“I thought you were supposed to be an upfront player? When were you gonna tell me that you’re that good with a rifle, huh?” You snicker, walking close to her and raising a fist. Cinder gives a belly laugh and knocks her knuckles against yours, again offering the shattered ear piece to you.

“Well, I would have, but I was too busy getting shot in the head. Good thing I had that extra patch on me, otherwise my ass would have been in the burner. I was halfway up the other side of the building by the time you got here, slowpoke!”

“I didn’t see you climbing, though.”

She loops an arm around your shoulders and guides you over to the left, just as you hear the sound effect associated with the end of match screen. Before it makes an appearance, though, she points out to the railing of the ship.

“I snuck out the window! Turret was a bit of an issue, but I made it okay – I just climbed up the side of the ship! By the way, there was only one floor between us and the water, so we had some pretty fucking good timing, huh?”

You feel a cold sweat come over you. If that had gone any longer, you might have been in some real trouble.

>MATCH DECIDED!

>CONGRATULATIONS!

“Heh, you’re damn right there. See you on the outside, Cinder?”

“Yeah. Good game!” She smiles brightly at you, pure joy dancing in her irises.

“Good game.” You respond, managing a wry one in return.

As soon as the words fall upon the silent air, the world begins to fade to black. A deep satisfaction comes over you, one that you associate with a well-played game, as well as paying back an asshole who’s been nothing but an annoyance to you. To add to that, you were able to ensure that your best friend got proper payback, which is why you agreed to help to begin with.

All in all, a pretty productive game! It feels, as the youth say, fucking good man. What would you like to do when you get out of the console?

As your senses slowly return to you inside of your arcade’s console, you are immediately met with the muffled sound of cheering. You blearily blink your eyes, as a sense of grogginess lingers in the back of your mind. Maybe it’s just from the intensity of that match, but wow, you feel exhausted. You really did give it your all, and through many close calls, you made it!

You will forever be on lookout for those suicide knives, though. That shit is downright devious, even if it did have a good effect on your opponent. Speaking of him, you’re going to have some fucking words with him.

Shaking one of your arms awake, you reach up and pull the console’s helmet off of your head. Apparently your body had gotten hot as well, judging by the cold air that washes over your face. You wonder if team matches are more taxing on the machine and the mind? You suppose that’s a question that should be asked later.

Pulling yourself out of the seat, you notice that there are a lot of people gathered around the consoles, enough so that your vision is obstructed due to it. Some are reaching out to you, others are frantically cheering so much that their faces are turning red, and hardly any of them are being quiet.

That won’t do. There are more people in here than just Warscape observers, after all.

“EVERYONE QUIET DOWN!” You holler over the din of the crowd, causing most to immediately shut their traps. “I don’t mind some excitement, but please be mindful of others in the arcade. You ain’t the only crowd in here.”

While there are a few rabble-rousers after that, most oblige your request and limit their hype to whispers, although there are plenty of glances shot your way still. Some even take pictures, to which you let out a giant sigh.

At least they listened. You’re not gonna get on their asses for taking pictures, considering they’d do it when you aren’t looking anyways.

Putting that at the back of your mind, you make your way over to Edit’s console with a bit of pride in your step. Cinder’s still firmly sat in hers, and Sky is just pulling her helmet off. She shoots you a smile that grows impish when she sees where you’re walking, yet she makes no move to engage or interrupt. She just watches.

Like a sniper.

When you finally reach Edit’s console, you notice that he is firmly sat within. You’d almost think he was still in-game, were it not for his knuckles being white from how hard he’s clenching the chair.

This is too rich, honestly.

>Take his helmet off for him – if he’s not gonna do it, you’ll be more than happy to oblige.

Instead of taking the forceful route and taking that helmet off of his head so he’ll look at you, you do the next best thing. You walk in front of the console, lean against the wall, cross your arms, and stare ahead with a smirk.

If there’s one thing you’ll capitalize on, it’s you being the very first thing he sees when he exits. Judging by his current clenched fists and his reactions – both before and during the game – the thought of losing to you must have been incredibly hard for him. Now that it’s become a reality, you can only wonder how it’s resonating within his head.

You can’t help but wonder how his stream reacted to the loss, now that you think about it. Despite being out of internet culture for five years, you’re pretty damn sure that his chat is filled with memes and derivative language. Considering how much he likes to talk himself up, you can only wonder what sort of promises he had delivered to his community.

You’ll have to look up the VOD later. That shit will be priceless.

Speaking of reactions, Sky is apparently finding your antics to be amusing, judging by the way she’s hiding her chuckles with a hand. The crowd is also eager to see how it unfolds, judging by the eyes that have drifted away from you and to Edit’s console. Hell, you can even see a few people hurriedly whispering into their phones as they stare at him, most likely using text-to-speech to either record or livetweet it.

Ah, the marvels of modern technology. 2030 is a good place to be.

Eventually, Edit’s hands slowly rise from the arms of the chair and grasp the underside of the helmet, pulling it off a bit too harshly and slamming it in the holder. When he looks up, he recoils as he sees you, but his eyes immediately narrow with pure rage and vitriol a moment later. His black hair is matted to his head, and you can tell that he’s grinding his teeth as he observes your inherent smugness.

Yeah, you not only proved him wrong, and you not only put his claims about Cinder down by the both of you living through the match, but you fucking styled on him while you did it. You can hardly blame him for being as mad as he is.

Good. He deserves it.

>Throw down some smack talk – it’s about time you give as good as you got. (Suggestions are welcome.)

Without a word, before he can even open his mouth, your arm is out and pointing towards the door to Cascade. He looks at your arm, then behind him, then at you with a look that screams “excuse me?”. Your expression is in an unwavering smirk, choosing to allow your latent smugness to speak for you in this instance.

You don’t need to stoop down to his level in this instance. He has done more than enough to earn your ire, and Cinder’s as well, but you refuse to lay into him – not only for your own sake, but for those who are currently overlooking the scene. You don’t want to be that type of business owner – your arcade is the epitome of chill vibes, and you’ll keep it that way even if it kills you.

Also, he doesn’t deserve kindness. Fuck him. All you’ve wanted this entire time is for him to get out of your store, and now you’re prepared to enforce it.

The silence between the two of you stretches on for a very long time, and you can see his mind racing as he tries to formulate a response. He opens his mouth a few times, as if he’s going to start screaming and cursing, but it always shuts hard enough that you can hear his teeth clack together.

Sky’s eyes continue to light up. Cinder is only just pulling off her headset. You really don’t want the two of them to get into it again.

Finally, he rises from the seat and stands as tall as he can, walking forward and shoving you against the wall harshly. You pay it no mind and stare at him still, noting that his face is set in a very harsh scowl.

“You’ll regret this, you fucking cheater.”

“That insult’s getting old, Edit. Just admit that I’m better than you.”

An audible “ooh” goes through the crowd, and he turns on his heel and walks away without another word. You can hear his angry breathing even as he goes through the crowd, roughly shoving people aside as he does. Just as he’s about to get out, he goes to shove one more person, and he’s promptly shoved back against the side of the arcade machine across from him.

You try to get a look at who did it, but they’re practically hidden behind everybody else in the crowd. You respect that, honestly.

As soon as he’s past the crowd, Sky rises from her own chair, stretching as she does. Looking over at you, she begins to also walk towards the door, raising a hand in farewell to both you and Cinder.

“This has been fun, you two! I might have to come back here sometime – would that be alright with you, Nova?”

>That’s fine – you don’t have any qualms with her coming back, it’s not like she’s the asshole here.

“Yeah, I don’t mind you coming back – you’re chill enough. However, I don’t want anymore funny business from you. If you show up, come to play, and not assist people like him with bothering my friend.” You state seriously, moving off the wall and nodding in her direction.

She smiles at you, and begins to pass through the crowd with a wink.

“Sounds like something I can abide by~! Have a good one, everyone – thank you for coming to watch us, it was absolutely a pleasure!”

The crowd erupts once more at the girl’s words, and you can’t help but facepalm at how easily they had forgotten what you said. Looks like she’s pretty popular, and with her frightening skill at the game, you know she’s earned it. Regardless of who she seems to associate herself with, she’s actually a pretty nice person at the end of the day. A pity that it has to be wasted on someone like Edit.

As you watch the two of them leave, you see that Edit lashes out with his foot and angrily kicks your desk, storming out and slamming the door behind him. Sky turns and gives one last wave before catching the door with a hand, sliding on that puffy purple jacket as she leaves the arcade.

With the crowd muttering to themselves, you decide that it’s time for them to disperse, considering the match is over.

“Alright, everyone, let’s stop crowding around! The match is over, and other people wanna play this game – either find something to do or leave!” You call out, clapping your hands to draw their attention to yourself. To your surprise, many people immediately dart towards the Warscape machines, and people are nearly tripping over themselves in order to secure a spot.

“That was so cool – I can’t fall behind!”

“I gotta try that trick with the knife, hehe…”

“Man, they’re gonna fucking LOVE this!”

Those are comments you hear as you pull Cinder out of the line of fire, maneuvering out of the way so people have free access to the machines without your asses in the way. You look over at the girl, and see that she’s practically glowing.

“Dude, we fuckin’ did it!”

“That we did. Feeling good?”

“Absolutely! We showed those guys what’s up!” She pumps her fist in the air and does a little hop, beaming up at you. “And more than that, we finally got that douchebag out of the arcade. Who does he think he is, messing with us? He gave me shit for even daring to play, and yet he went out so easily!”

“There was a point where he was doing pretty good, though.”

“Really? I don’t remember that.” She winks at you impishly, and the both of you share a chuckle. Even with those words, however, you notice that she looks down at her feet and rubs her tattooed arm for a moment.

Strange, considering how happy she was just a moment ago.

You don’t like seeing Cinder with a downcast expression. It’s so out of character for her, especially when she’s usually the one who brightens a room when she walks into it. You find yourself moving forward immediately, which draws her attention – she looks up at you with a raised eyebrow, the dark expression still in her eyes. You can tell that it’s not directed at you, but regardless, you’re determined to drag her out of it.

It’s what she’s done for you, after all.

With lightning fast reflexes, you move forward and secure an arm around her and pull her down to your side, putting all you have into it. You actually hear her gasp in surprise on the way down, and for a second, you think you’ve got her.

Unfortunately, you’ve forgotten just how strong she is compared to you.

Bounding up, she rips her head out from under your arm and spins you around, firmly latching onto your arm as she does. She shoves it behind your back and presses you up against one of the arcade machines, slamming her free hand next to your head as she does.

Despite her being taller than you, the way she’s positioned means she’s looking up to you with a sly smile, her dark expression gone in lieu of impish eyes. You’re close enough that you can see her clear blue eyes, and you instantly feel heat rise to your face as you stare down at her with shock.

“Did you think you’d get me that easy, Wolf?” There’s a low lilt to her voice, and the heat spreads to your ears.

You didn’t expect that she’d turn things around on you in such a way – all you wanted was a headlock, and now you’re in this situation! You can feel your heart hammering against your ribs, you have legitimately never been this close to someone in your life, and you don’t think your face could get any redder if you tried.

Rather than responding to her almost proactive words, you instead attempt to go on the offensive once more. Almost forgetting that there are other people around for a moment, you raise your arm and try to pull her into a headlock while simultaneously attempting to push off of the wall. Cinder snickers audibly as she takes her free hand off the wall and wraps it around your wrist, pressing it against the arcade cabinet tightly, somehow managing to make the situation look even worse than it was before.

That grin is enough to make you feel like steam is coming out of your ears.

“What’s brought this on, Wolf?”

“Just, uh, thought you seemed down towards the end. Wanted to try and lighten the mood.” Your voice is at least two pitches higher than normal, and that only serves to heighten Cinder’s amusement as she keeps you held in place.

Off to your left, you hear the sound of a camera going off, followed by various coos and titters from the crowd. You struggle to suppress a sigh – you’re not going to be hearing the end of this one, not with how fast information spreads these days. It appears Cinder noticed it as well, as she immediately lets you go and backs off a bit, murmuring an apology to you as she does.

You note that there’s a bit of a blush across her face as well.

“Sorry, forgot we weren’t alone for a sec. It’s not that I was down, necessarily, it’s just hard to forget some of the shit he said, you know? It’s all bullshit, and we beat him with flying colors, but shaking stuff like that off is a bit harder than you’d expect.” She shrugs her shoulders, as if to say “what can you do?”.

“Yeah. I know that pretty well.” You respond automatically, to which she punches your shoulder.

“Anyway, shouldn’t I be thanking you for even helping me in the first place? I know how much you don’t wanna play Warscape, so it really does mean a lot that you’d step in and help out.”

“How couldn’t I? Also, trying to convince me things are alright by paying off old card payments isn’t exactly subtle.”

“Hey! Subtlety isn’t my area of expertise!”

“And yet you managed to sneak up the side of a boat with no issue.”

“That’s in the game, dummy—”

“Hooooooly shit, are you two gonna get a room already?”

You’re both brought out of your exchange by a familiar blonde trotting over with his arms crossed, looking at the two of you with a mix of amusement and concern. You had expected Golden to be front and center at the consoles to remind you about the match you had committed yourself to, so it’s a bit of a surprise that he’s only showing up now.

>Ask him why he looks concerned – having pictures taken of your rabblerousing with Cinder isn’t the end of the world.
>Tell him that you haven’t forgotten about your promise – you did promise him a match, and you’ll deliver at some point.
>Tease him and ask if he’s jealous – you’re prepared to give him a bit of hazing out of good fun, especially with how insistent he’s been as of late.

You can’t help but feel curious about the concerned part of his expression, however you aren’t going to allow Golden to sour the mood. You and Cinder just pulled off a pretty great victory, and you finally have that jerkass out of your place – hell, he was bothering Golden too, so the boy should look happier in theory!

“C’mon, don’t be a party pooper, Goldie. We just got Edit out of the place, shouldn’t you be happy too, considering how he was fucking around with you? Could it be that you’re jealous that you’re not the one who was against the wall?”

The boy visibly halts in his tracks, and Cinder elbows you in the side between the bout of laughter that your statement brings. Despite the blush that’s not across his own face, he stammers out a response.

“I-I could care less about being pinned down, we’ve got bigger shit on our hands, Nova. Well, more specifically, you do.” He coughs into his hand to hide his embarrassment, and your brow furrows as you step towards him.

“What do you mean? I’m pretty sure that I’m clear as far as things go—”

“Wolfgang.”

A deep voice cuts into the conversation, and all at once, it feels like every ounce of air in your body is drawn out of you.

Behind Golden, previously unnoticed to you, is a tall and thin man. A dark brown, woolen jacket adorns his features, almost too big for him and sliding off of his shoulders. From the space between his neck and shirt collar, you can see that his skin is stretched around his collarbones, the things far more visible than they should be.

Your eyes slowly trail from his outfit to his face, and a pit of dread firmly buries itself in your stomach. You feel your hands begin to shake, and Cinder actually reaches out to steady you.

His eyes are just as sharp as they were the last time you had saw him, a crystalline blue that seemingly is peering into your soul. His mouth is seemingly sculpted into a frown, making his eerily pale features even more prominent. His hair – it was brown, before – is dyed in a sharp orange color, hanging in his face yet unable to hide his cold gaze and pierced ears.

Orange – Orion – looks like he hasn’t aged a day since you last saw him five years ago.

You had been dreaming of what it would be like to meet all of your team again. You had mapped out countless conversations, circumstances, and the like – almost to an exhaustive level, to the point where it kept you up at night.

And now he’s in front of you.

You aren’t prepared for this.

“It’s been a while. We need to talk.”

So, strangely enough, I’m archiving the thread here!

Due to the abruptness of how last thread ended, I was left in a pickle. This is the spot that the last one was supposed to end, however shit went down, so here we are. I feel like this is a perfect spot for what’s to come, personally, and I’d much rather cap it off at a good point rather than let it run on for a few more days!

Next time, we’re going to have something a little different. What might that be? Well, the title card is all you’re gonna get on that front until then!

To add to that, when am I gonna be running again? Normally I’d have another thread up by now, however I have an important paper due at the end of the week as well as the draft for it on Wednesday, so I’m gonna be using the time for studying and preparation for that. Therefore, you can expect the next thread from me to be on April 6th, 2020!

I sincerely hope you’ve all enjoyed reading this so far, it’s been an absolute joy to sit down and write this again. Please leave any questions, comments, concerns, compliments, or critiques that you have – I’ll be hanging around the thread for a while, so feel free to say anything that’s on your mind! If you’d like to communicate with me on a more permanent basis, I linked the Discord in the OP, so that’s where that is.

With that being said, I think it’s about time for me to stop rambling. Thank you very much for coming around, and I’ll see you next time for Gun x Glory #11.5!

Have a great day, anons.

Very glad you've enjoyed, anon, it's great to have you! I am always looking for more music to add to my playlist, maybe I'll publish it at some point!

To anyone still around, hello! I need to make a very quick addendum to the promised date of GxG #11.5 above!

Due to corona-chan existing, the due dates of a lot of my assignments were suddenly shunted around without warning thanks to my college going all online. Namely, I have three exams suddenly placed on my lap on April 9th, which is pretty fucked up considering it was a week later beforehand.

Therefore, I'm going to be sliding the date of the next thread from April 6th, 2020 to April 12th, 2020!

Thank you very much for understanding, and I'm looking forward to seeing you next time! Hope you all are having a fantastic day!

well that's a bummer

Fully agree, it's highly irritating for me as well.

Good luck on your exams OP
Schools really need to realize that people have lives though, can't just move exam dates closer like that
>>
>>4179729
Thank you very much for the well-wishes, anon, I'll try my best!

I'd also prefer it if they gave at least some sort of warning beforehand, but nope. Corona has fucked up everything lmao.

Thankfully, new thread is still inbound for the 12th, so we're all set on that front!

Hope you're having a great evening.
