Howdy all, and welcome to “A Song of Duty and Spite; House Reynold Quest”. Here we play as Ser Mervyn Reynold, a lowborn son of a bastard hedge knight who, through his skill at arms and a bit of luck, has married into the noble House Reynold of Ember Peak. He currently serves as Lady Elleanor Reynold’s sword shield, and in the murky depths of in-house politics he will attempt to rise high despite coming from such humble origins. These waters are treacherous however. Lady Elleanor has not forgotten her once betrothed, the late Reynard Reyne, and while she attempts to keep control of her house, her husband Lord Titus has the backing of Lord Tywin himself, and has a strong influence over the Reynold Military. The Mad King grows more and more erratic, and there are rumours that the relationship between Lord Tywin and King Aerys grow strained. Will you remain Lady Elleanors right hand, or will you strike out on your own in your pursuit of position and power? Let get stuck in and find out!!

Dramatis Personae:
>Ser Mervyn Reynold, 25, Our MC.
Ser Mervyn grew up the son of a bastard hedge knight who did not know his father and a blacksmiths daughter. After his mother passed at the age of 5, his father began travelling the westerlands to sell his sword to anyone who would hire him. Eventually, the man passed away to a pox when Mervyn was 17, but not before knighting his son. He than took his fathers horse and mule and travelled in the same way. Eventually, he heard of a tourney for a young maiden’s hand, he attended and won handily over many much nobler knights. He now serves the Lady of the House, Elleanor Reynold as her sworn shield.

>Alyssa Reynold, 18, Mervyn’s Wife
Alyssa is a pretty young girl, and mother to hers and Ser Mervyn’s infant son, Marqus. She is driven and tenacious, if not impatient and occasionally jealous, and she has been reared to be a player in the game by her mother. While not considered beautiful as her elder sister might be, her red curls and sea green eyes certainly make her comely. She is gifted at weaving through the art of noble intrigue and has a knack for remembering heraldry and house history.

>Tyrus Reynold, 15
Tyrus Reynold is Ser Mervyn’s squire and the second son and fifth child of Lord Titus and Lady Elleanor. He has the makings of fearsome fighter and knight, although his temper can be dangerous and difficult to control. He is the same height as his sponsor and looks to soon over take him in size, if not skill, and resembles his father in looks but his mother in colouring. Soon to be a father to a bastard child, and is in love with a common girl from the kitchens of Ember Peak by the name of Rose. .

>Lord Titus Reynold, 46
Lord Titus was born Titus Lantell of Lannisport, and grew up to be a knight who swore his sword to the Lannisters. During the Reyne/Tarbeck Rebellion, he was commanded by Tywin Lannister to march with 300 men to confine the Lady Elleanor, then a maiden of 16 years, and prevent House Reynold from aiding the Reynes and Tarbecks in rebellion as a favour to her father, the late Lord Marqus. A relatively oafish man who cares not for the workings of his house, he is not without a degree of cunning and ultimately seeks to usurp his wife as the true head of the house.

>Lady Elleanor Reynold, 36
Lady Elleanor is a woman who remembers. Once betrothed to Ser Reynard Reyne, she endured losing both her father and betrothed in the span of a year at the age of 16, and was subsequently married off to a lowly knight of Lannisport. She endured the dishonour, even providing 6 children to her husband, all in the memory of her father and Reynard. She is the true power in Ember Peak, and seeks to retain control of her house by any means necessary.

--- 17/03/282 ---

The remainder of your days at the Golden Tooth had seemed to drag on after the dismissal of your squire and the birth of your niece. Andrea and the young Allison were given time to rest but even at the end of the fortnight they were unfit to brave the winter that had so ruthlessly comes howling out of the north. Tygon, Andrea and their infant daughter had decided to stay at a touch longer at the Golden Tooth while the rest of the family took to the road in the long return to Ember Peak.

There was a certain tension in the air as you rode through the mountain passes that the river road ran through. Elleanor had confided in you that she’d had no further contact from Ember Peak since her previous raven from Ser Devon Drake and found the notion troubling. She had sent a rider through south towards Hornvale and home but Ser Oscar had not returned before you had set off and had not managed to find you along the road afterwards. Titus had taken to riding at the front of the column with Ser Lionel Ruttiger by his side, while Tyrus had taken to following after Ser Cardyn and Ser Austin. This left you alone with nothing but your thoughts as Alyssa, Marqus and Elleanor were riding within the carriage that was sealed up to protect from the wind.

You ruffled your shoulders as you tried to buried your ears in your wolfskin cloak that hung from your shoulders. After nearly two weeks on the road you were tiring of this never ending blizzard but you were beginning to recognize the area of the gold road. Excitement filled your chest for you knew that you were less than a days ride from home. But as you reached the western crest of the valley that sheltered the trading inn you found yourself looking down at an unwelcome sight.

You had been beside Elleanor when she had left explicit instructions for Ser Devon Drake to follow during her absence. The two primary concerns were the construction of houses and infrastructure surrounding the Sleeping Lion and the improvement and fortification of the bridge that crossed the Lesser Mander You could see stone supports being fitted for the bridge but it was the growth about the inn that was so troubling. The lands surrounding it were positively bustling but what gave you cause for concern was the host of men that surrounded it. To your eye you estimated that just shy of 500 men were camped in and around the inn and the banner that flew from some of the larger tents was a gold lion on red.

Lord Titus beckoned you over with a hand and a smile. His bushy moustache had ice and snow hanging from it and his face was red and blustering but he smiled.

“Ser Mervyn! Do not be concerned good Ser. I had a notion that Lord Tywin would be stopping at Ember Peak on his return to Casterly Rock. What you see before you is his household guard, and I expect that he will have more of his knights and sworn swords in the castle properly. I believe a feast will be in order!”
>>
He clapped his hands together and rubbed them to bring some warmth back to his fingers and he smiled a small smile but perhaps in his eyes you could see a look of apprehension in his hazel eyes. It was said that the Lion of the West was an intimidating man and that few men were comfortable standing before his scrutiny, especially those who had failed him in some way. Talks with Alyssa about how Lord Tywin had lost his heir to the Kingsguard and how the heir to Casterly Rock was now a dwarf was sure to place the Warden of the West in no mood to be disappointed by his bannermen.

Down the valley and up once more as you climbed towards your home and you saw the sight of it’s familiar walls that melded directly into the mountain with the soaring red eagle flying above it’s merlons. But above the main gate you saw the Lannister Lion hung higher and more splendidly as it whipped in the winter wind. You entered through into the courtyard and were quick to dismount and assist your wife out from the carriage. She now looked pregnant once more and you were keen to ensure that she was aided in whatever manner she required to ensure her health. You removed the cloak from about your shoulders and draped it over your lady wife tenderly before turning to assist Elleanor.

Her face was one of ice and stone. No emotion showed on her features as she gracefully descended the carriage step and began to walk into her home without so much as a pause.

“Like walking into a lions den” you thought to yourself but you followed after her with your wife on your arm into the warmth of the halls. You followed Lady Elleanor towards the great hall along with Lord Titus and when you entered you saw Lord Tywin sitting in the lords seat at the high table. Even from across the hall you could feel the mans presence. Alyssa would have described it as indominable but you had a simpler word for it. Fearsome. His great gold side whiskers framed his face and the look he wore would have looked softer if it was carved from granite. Together you approached the Lord Paramount of the Westerlands and together you all knelt.

“Rise.” His voice was strong and sure, and you rose. Although he was still some yards away he seemed to loom over you. It was Titus who made to speak first after he took a hard swallow.

“My Lord, thank you for blessing our halls with your presence. I hope that you have found your accommodations comfortable…”

Silence was the reply. A cough sounded awkwardly from someone in the hall and Titus continued.

“My Lord, please, I hope you will allow us to have a feast assembled in your honour this evening.” Lord Tywin was staring hard ahead but not at Titus. You followed his eyes and they bored into the woman who was standing tall and proud within her own halls as silence fell once more and Titus’ attempts at courtesy were lost. He went to break the silence a third time but Lord Tywin spoke half a heart beat before him.

Tywin Lannister rose from his seat and descended off of the dais towards your group and stood in front of you as he addressed both Titus and Elleanor in turn. You could see that he was a tall man with impeccable postures. Age had not slooped his shoulders nor had it taken the fierceness from his eyes. Together, he and Titus left the great hall together in silence and were followed by men glad in gilded steel plate leaving you standing there awkwardly. You and Alyssa had returned to your own familiar chambers along with Cerenna and you for one were glad to be rid of the tension of the great hall.

Alyssa fretted and worried, pacing as she held Marqus but when you asked after her she had no answers to give. It appeared this was beyond her scope of knowledge and influence. You’d had the servants tend the fire and were preparing to have your own dinner when a knock on the door interrupted you. You opened it to find a man you didn’t know clad in a red surcoat embroidered with a silver lion bringing you summons.

“Good evening Ser. I am Ser Larold Lannett and I come to bring you to Lord Titus’ solar at Lord Tywin’s request.”

He made a show of a flourish and you looked back to Alyssa and a worried look came over her face before she nodded her head slowly. You stepped out of your chambers and followed Ser Larold to the solar. It was queer of you to hear it called Titus’ solar, as Elleanor was the only person to make use of it but you felt that was a moot point considering the circumstances. You came to the door flanked by two men in their gilded steel and the door was pushed open and you were ushered inside.

You saw the two lords sitting across from one another as utterly opposite as two men might be. There was the feintest resemblance between the two, that of distant blood ties but little more. Lord Tywin did not so much as twitch upon your entering the room whereas Titus turned and stood abruptly to make a show of you.

“Ah, of course my lord, here is the man who has aided myself. It is he who has informed me of Elleanor’s meeting with Lord Qarlton Chelsted. My Lord, may I introduce Ser Mervyn Reynold.”

You felt yourself bow before the seated lords and Lord Titus snapped his fingers and a servant sprung forth from an alcove to pull out a chair for you to join them.

“Please Ser Mervyn, join us. Please take a seat.” Titus’ words were polite but you felt as if you were standing on rotten ice and there was a rat gnawing at your innards. You took the seat and sat and Titus went to continue the conversation but Lord Tywin stared at you hard and raised a hand.

“Lord Titus tells me you are his wifes sworn sword. So to whom do your loyalties lie?”

--- Ser Mervyn Reynold’s Persuasion (Convince) Test ---
Rolled 13 vs DC: 12
Result: One Degree of Success

“Lord Titus tells it true my lord. I am Lady Elleanor Reynold’s sworn sword. She raised me to the position of Master at Arms here at Ember Peak. I am loyal to her.”

Titus gawps at you in shock at the honesty of your answer but Tywin Lannister gives you a hard stare. In the glow of candle and torch light you could see the flecks of gold that glittered amongst the emerald green of his eyes as they narrowed and searched for any weakness that you might have. It was the way he didn’t move that was unsettling as he stared at you. Silence seemed to be his ally and it pounded in your ears before he responded.

“Loyalty is a hard to thing to find in a man, let alone one of your birth.”

He let the silence fill the room and you found yourself being the one who filled it.

“A dog doesn’t bite the hand who feeds it, and a man doesn’t betray the one who gives him rank and title.”

“And yet here is my cousin, distant as he may be, who seems to be under the impression that you were of a different loyalty. I know you know of the grudge Lady Elleanor keeps towards me.”

You cough politely into your hand in order to buy yourself a second to gather your thoughts. You looked away from Tywin towards Titus but Lord Tywin placed a hand on the table and you found yourself drawn in his direction.

“M’lord I’ve heard such things. How you slew her betrothed and married her to Lord Titus in place of her father.”

The slow roll of Tywin’s fingers on the table top fill the room as he rests his chin on a raised fist. Everything about him seemed calculated, from his flagrant display of wealth in his doublet and jewellery to the way he conducted himself.
>>
“Titus. You may leave us. I will send for you if need be.”

Titus sputters and guffaws, unable to find words in his confusion momentarily.

“M-my lord. Do you think that wise?”

Lord Tywin turned ever so slightly and look at Titus with a raised eye brow.

“Do you think it wise to question my commands. Are you to intervene should Ser Mervyn decide he would wish to wring my neck? My son could have bested you in the yard by the time he was eleven, and if I am not mistaken Ser Mervyn embarrassed my brother by defeating him in a single. I do not believe Ser Mervyn is fool enough to make an attempt on my life, for if he were, not only would his own life be forfeit but the lives of everyone in this castle.”

He was speaking to Titus but you knew in turn that he was speaking to you as well. Lord Titus stood from his seat but before he could turn to leave Tywin instructed him to take the rest of his servants with him and to leave him completely alone with you. Titus’ face went hard but he did as he was bid and you were left alone with perhaps the most powerful man in Westeros aside from King Aerys’ himself.

“My cousin is a lackwit. I am surprised he managed to convince that Lord Lefford to consent to the match between his sister and their second son.” He scowled as he looked into his cup and took from it a shallow swallow.

“I’m not sure that it was Lord Titus who convinced him my lord. Lady Elleanor was of a mind to make the match as well.”

“Yes, Titus told me as much. She seeks to build up an alliance with other houses who had loyalties to the Reynes such as the Farman’s and Brax’s, and seeks to ally herself with houses that control the way in and out of the Westerlands. The Serrett’s of Silverhill further south along the Lesser Mander and the Lefford’s of the Golden Tooth.”

It wasn’t a question. It seemed more of a way of him telling you he knew what she was planning.

“It is an audacious plot. Now fortunately Ser Sebaston Farman fell and the Lady Joanna remains without child. I can assure you that Lord Sebastian will not be marrying the girl as Elleanor hopes. No child of such a union will have a claim on Castamere.”

You blink your eyes in unison and swallow but Lord Tywin continues on.

“Do not look surprised Ser. Her ploy was obvious. When my brother wrote to me regarding your trial it was plain to me what she intended. Thankfully the boy fell before a child came. A stroke of luck to be sure but nonetheless. So now I will ask you Ser, is there anything you wish to speak to me about?”

What could possibly go wrong? Honestly, though, this plan is liable to get us, and the house all killed. It isn't going to be long before he hears about Elleanor's foolishness. If we were the ones to tell him, there is a chance that when this all goes terribly wrong, we will be spared.

Well in the interest of keeping things moving along here, I'm going to call it for telling her about the loan and land grant from the Crown.

Before I go ahead and start writing, are there any demands you would like to make of him for revealing this information? I'll leave this prompt open for 30 minutes and get to writing.

>>
>>4164185
We don't want anything from him, no acknowledgement, no reward. We're doing this because she has been so blinded by what COULD have been had the Reynes not been bloody idiots, that she is blind to what she has. She believes the crown would protect her from your wrath, that fancy words, veiled threats and wiles would protect her from your ire. I know better. All the talk in the world won't stop a bloody sword in hand in the end. She wants her revenge more than anything, take it from her, and she will break, and either lose what else she has, her madness apparent to what is left of her family that still holds her in regard, or she finally give up on what may have been long long ago.

She raised me up, but her plot is too fragile built on too many strings, and this is the only way I can imagine to save her from herself, and even that might be too late.
>>
>>4164221
Anyone opposed to using this? Speak now or forever hold your peace
>>
>>4164221
Sounds good, making it clear that we're doing this to protect our family is key. And that's not even from a meta perspective, our thing is legacy after all.
>>
Your mind races with the possibilities. Questions of honour and loyalty run alongside thoughts of your family and survival. Staring down the enemy you had never quite understood you were fighting against was enough to put it all in perspective to you. This was not a man you trifled with, nor plotted against.

“My lord, I was not entirely honest with Lord Titus.”

The look Tywin gives you is not one of surprise and he gives the smallest of nods to invite you to continue.

“Lady Elleanor she…she has reached an agreement with the Crown. She has granted Castamere and it’s surrounding land by Lord Qarlton Chelsted, by the order of King Aerys.”

The hand that Tywin had placed upon the table had curled into a fist, but his face betrayed no emotion. It was as if his face was made of granite.

“Lord Qarlton is a toad. He was a familiar sight around court during my time as Hand of the King. Do continue.”

“Yes. They have also arranged a loan in order to allow for House Reynold to began repairs on the keep as soon as possible. I imagine that the coin will arrive soon and Elleanor will put it to her uses as soon as she is able.”

Silence. Seven be damned the man used silence like a dagger at the throat. He scratched at his side whiskers and as he considered what you had told him.

“Not minutes ago you confessed that your loyalty was to Elleanor and yet now you betray her. I refuse to believe that my brother was beaten by a craven. Why is it you would betray her confidence?”

You ground your teeth and felt your brow furrow. “I do it to save her from herself. She seeks to use this royal grant as her shield, but I can see it for what it is. A piece of parchment. I’m sure the Tarbecks and the Reynes had pieces of parchment in their libraries yet they proved no shield. I am still not sure what she truly wants in the end. Whether it be your head or if she will be satisfied with simply reclaiming the castle she has decided is hers by rights. I’m a simple man m’lord, and I want to make sure that she, and this family, survives.”
>>
“I’m sure you have heard of Lady Elleanor’s grandfather? The late Lord Marqus Reynold?”

You nodded your head. “I have. My own son is named after him.”

“Lord Marqus was a good and leal bannerman to mine own father. He never borrowed gold he could not pay back, he did not make jests to my fathers face nor behind his back. He proved a loyal subject and when the Reynes and the Tarbecks took up arms against House Lannister I remembered the mans loyalty. I saw fit to spare his daughter, and married her to a man who was willing to give up his family name in order to keep Lord Marqus’ legacy alive.”

“My lord, why are you telling me this.”

“Simple. I remember those who serve my family well. Now, do you understand why this situation is delicate?”

You give the man a small shrug and a grimace but Lord Tywin looked unperturbed.

“I cannot discard a royal decree, but Castamere will not be restored. One of the few pieces of wisdom my father passed down to me was that there was a task for every tool and a tool for every task. I have in my service fools, hounds and other such creatures but I find myself in need of a different beast. I find myself in need a hawk. One that can be loosed on an objective and will return to hand afterwards. I offer you a chance to enter into my service now. You will continue to serve Elleanor but you will report to Titus and he will then inform me of her further politicking. Do you accept?”

You nodded.

He responds with a curt “Good” before gesturing towards a wine cup sitting in front of you. You pick up the glass and a small nod of the mans cup indicates the agreement as you bring the goblet to your lips. It was some of the finest wine you had ever tasted. It was a deep and dark red, with a dry afterbite that stayed on the tip of your tongue.

“Now, from here on you shall take your orders from Lady Elleanor, but if the time should come that I see a need to command your loyalty you will obey it to the letter. I will see to it that Castamere is an insurmountable task to claim, but for now you shall pretend to be none the wiser. You are still her sworn sword. I expect that she already knows you have been summoned to met with Titus and I and that you will soon be summoned to inform her of what we have spoke of. You will tell her what she wishes to hear, of how I berated Titus for his failings and how he thought you could be persuaded.”

You nodded once more and he returned the gesture with the shallowest of nods and you took that as a sign to take your leave. You finished off the remainder of your wine and stood, pushing in your chair as you made to leave but as you were just about to reach the door Lord Tywin’s voice stopped you in your tracks.

“Do you have a taste for music Ser?”

You turned to face him and gave a shrug of your shoulders. The hair on the back of your neck was stood up like a razorbacks and gooseflesh prickled your arms.

“I know of a few tavern songs and such. I suppose I enjoy it as much as any man does when in his cups.”

“Remember that I reward those who serve me accordingly. Should you prove useful in stopping this foolish venture to spite my family’s honour you shall be recompensed accordingly. I reward betrayal in the same manner. I know of some singers and bards who would be a fitting gift to those of questionable loyalty. Now, be a good man and inform Ser Larold to find your maester. I have some letters that are in need of a raven.”

He had already looked away and was leafing through a small pile of notes and you walked out through the door and let out a heavy breath of air. Ser Larold looked to you and smiled politely.

“Lord Tywin wishes for you to find Maester Aethan. He has some letters he needs seeing off.”
>>
Ser Larold bows his head to you and asks after where the maesters chambers might be found. You told him in as simple directions as you could and you could hear his plate rattling off the walls as you walked in the opposite direction to your chambers. Alyssa had fussed over what had been said and she had gone uncharacteristically quiet when you spoke of how Lord Tywin had asked you to serve him in secret. As if on cue you were interrupted once more by a knock and you found Ser Devon Drake staring at you and informing you that Elleanor had a need to speak with you.”

His tone spoke of no argument and urgency and you followed him to Lady Elleanor’s familiar chambers. He opened the heavy wooden door and entered ahead of you. When you followed him you found her sitting at a small side table with a small music box clasped in her hands.

“Ser Mervyn, please sit down. Ser Devon you may leave us.”

“I shall be just outside the door if you require anything my lady.”

The man was in his full plate and had his hand on his sword and he looked directly at you when he spoke the words. Lord Tywin’s presence had raised suspicions of loyalty it seems. Elleanor for her part gestured for you to take a seat at the small table before gently winding the music box and you could hear the Rains of Castamere tinkling softly as you sat. She waited patiently for the music to stop before she turns her attention towards you once more.

“As ironic as it is I have always loved the melody of that wretched song. It remind me of Reynard, and it when I feel weak it gives me the strength to carry on. It helps me to focus my hate and desire for revenge. Now, imagine if a passing bird told me that the man I despise had just met with the man that I rely on to protect my life. To carry out the tasks that I am unable to do myself. What would you make of that Ser Mervyn?”

“I’d take it as the man asking after those who are sworn to a woman he knows is his enemy. I think you would do the same if you were in his position m’lady.”

She gave you a knowing and wry smile. It barely showed on the corners of her lips but in your time as her sworn sword you could now recognize such things.

“You would be correct Ser Mervyn. It is exactly something I would do in order to garner any information I could. Now I have a question to ask of you Ser. I have already discussed it at length with Maester Aethan, as well as Ser Devon but I thought a more blunt mind might offer a different insight. I have a royal decree giving me the rights to Castamere and her surrounding lands and I have Lord Tywin Lannister here within my very hall. Are you of the opinion that I should inform him of this now, or perhaps I should simply take what is mine and show him once the task is done. Thirdly, I could also present it to him in Casterly Rock in open court so the rest of the West might know of the legality of my claim. What counsel would you offer me on this matter Ser?”

Legal claims mean little when you are in the enemy’s keep

Elleanor has never been brought low. Even when her family lost everything, she retained her nobility, dignity and part of her wealth

She has never lost everything - so she doesn’t consider it as a risk, in her mind, ‘legality’ and ‘noble privileges’ will protect her.

When push comes to shove, it won’t. Sheer might rules this world.

You took a deep breath as you considered the proposition she laid before you. On one hand delaying her to wait to deliver the news in open court would buy you time but the risk of it being so publicly could cause a full-on political scandal. Informing him within these halls might not have the political punch Elleanor desired but it was certainly safer.

“If you are going to tell Lord Tywin of this, I would caution doing it here my lady.”

She pursed her lips and raised her brows in mild surprise as she raised her pale hand to idly scratch at her cheek with a single finger.

“You surprise me Ser Mervyn. I had thought you would be of the same mind as Ser Devon and counsel me to take my case to Casterly Rock as well. Why should I tell Lord Tywin here where there are no other great lords and ladies to see?”

“My lady, a decree from the Crown means little within Casterly Rock. Lord Tywin exterminated two families, and there was little any could do to stop him. If you walk into the lions den you are at his mercy, but if you tell him here with myself and Ser Devon at your side and our men about the castle he will still be made aware of the legality of your claim.”

She regarded you carefully once more and you can see the thoughts turning in her mind behind her sea green eyes. She pushed back an errant lock of her red hair back over her shoulder and straightened in her chair as she addressed you.

“I’ll admit that I would not have thought these thoughts to come from you, although I can see the wisdom in them. I will consider your advise carefully Ser. In the mean time I would advise you to prepare your men regardless. You will be riding for Castamere as soon as Ember Peak is rid of these Lannisters.”
>>
“What forces will I be taking my lady? I would caution against leaving Ember Peak undefended.”

“Wise counsel Ser. Ser Gordon Serrett shall be sending two hundred foot, as well as a unit of cavalry. Together with our archers and the Reins I feel that will be enough to gain a foothold in the area. Also, Tyrus will be accompanying you on this trip, Ser Gordon has agreed to sponsor him and see to his training. Perhaps a more educated man might see Tyrus’ excesses curbed.”

Somehow you doubted that but you did not feel it appropriate to say and kept the thoughts to yourself. The conversation runs for some time more as you discuss the Lannister host encamped at the bottom of the valley.

“Yes, so did Tywin Lannister mention anything about the army that now seeks to eat my larders empty and drink my winestocks dry?”

“He did not my lady. He made no mention of when he might be leaving.”

“What did you and he talk about if not military matters Ser?”

A chill ran down your spine at the question and you reached for a glass and brought it to your lips to gather your composure if only for a moment.

“Little my lady. He spoke to me about your father, his relation to Lord Titus and how he considers the man an oaf. He asked of my birth and other such things.”

“Such pleasantries seem below a lord such as Tywin Lannister. Surely there must have been something else discussed. Please Ser Mervyn, spare no details…”

And so you told her of your conversation with the Lord of Casterly Rock and you lied through your teeth. You told her of small details from the conversation to lend the story credit. You spoke of how he had enquired about you had defeated Ser Tygett at Fair Isle, and how he had seemed furious when he asked about your trial under the supervision of Ser Kevan.

“Ah. And I nearly forgot. He also showed an interest in our military force as well. Their numbers, equipment, training and the like. He seemed particularly interested in the fact that you have begun excavations to improve Ember Peak’s defenses.”

She seemed to smile softly at you, particularly about the moments regarding Lord Tywin’s embarrassment and irritation and you watched her face carefully. She stands and you follow suit and she walks you to the door and lays a hand on your shoulder as she bids you take your leave from her.

“Ser Mervyn, I thank you for your wisdom, and for your recount of Lord Tywin’s frustrations. Those thoughts will bring a smile to my face for many days to come. Now, I will be holding court upon the morrow with Lord Tywin and I shall expect you by my side. I expect you have many things to see to so I shall allow you to tend to your duties. Good night Ser.”

As the door closed behind you a grimace crept onto your face once more as you cursed into the shadows and took a deep breath before you continued on. This skull doggery and politicking was not your strength and you knew you were walking a knifes edge. You were looking forward to the simplicity of combat and the peace that it brought you.

You thought it best to speak with Ser Devon Drake before anything else might interrupt. The fact that he was of the opinion to take Elleanor’s royal grant to Casterly Rock and declare it in front of the entire Westerlands was something that troubled you. You could not imagine Lord Tywin taking such a public humiliation well and it was now your obligation to prevent it.

You found him waiting outside Elleanor’s chambers exactly as he said he would be and you nodded to the man but the gesture went unreturned. His armour was well made, though not so well made as your own. It was silvered steel and the man stood as still as a statue beside the door. The two of you were not friends. You were the more skilled fighter and had largely replaced him as Elleanor’s right hand although his devotion to her had not wavered and he still served as dutifully as he ever had.

“Ser Devon, do you have a moment.”

“Make it fast Ser Mervyn, I have the watch.” You imagined if he’d been able to straighten he would have but the mans posture was impeccable and all that happened was the soft rubbing of steel on steel as he pushed his chest out and looked directly past you.

“I’ll take it you won’t want to speak somewhere more private? Perhaps over some wine or ale?”

“I would not Ser.”

You cursed inside you head and felt your fists clench involuntarily but you forced yourself to relax and you flexed your fingers out as you tried to be cordial with the man.

“Elleanor told me you were of the opinion that she should travel to Casterly Rock to proclaim her new claims?”

“I am. Making the claim publicly eliminates the risk. If the entirety of the Westerlands knows of it, Lord Tywin cannot deny such a thing.”

“Do you think that he had any right to exterminate House Reyne? Or to bring down Tarbeck Hall and turn it to rubble?”

“Lady Elleanor has the backing of the crown. If he were to do such a thing he would bring down his own house. House Targaryen would march with the entirety of the realm and Ember Peak would give them entrance to the West while Faircastle gives any sea bound forces free passage to Lannisport. Lady Elleanor has made her own assurances.” He nodded as if that settled the matter and you felt your teeth begin to grind.

“What of House Lydden? Deep Den controls the gold road to our east and Lord Farman is a tentative ally at best.”

“Lady Elleanor is more accomplished at these matters than either of us Ser, but particularly yourself considering your birth. You seem quite doubtful of our lady’s abilities Ser. Have you lost faith in her?”

You took a step to close the space between the two of you and your faces stood not a hands breadth apart. The man sneered as his hand casually brushed against the hilt of his long sword. It was painfully obvious how much more heavily equipped he was when your own fingers toyed with the dirk that hung at your side.

“Question my loyalty again and I’ll bash your fucking skull in. Are you an idiot or perhaps some sort of simpleton? You think the law protects anyone in another lords castle? You and I both know that the red hand that holds a sword decides what is right and wrong. The crown could march the day they received a raven and we will have been dead for days with our heads on spikes, or at the very least locked away in the bowels of the rock. If you bear so much love for Elleanor than convince her that she will get to savour Tywin’s humiliation in private. What would your daughter say if your wisdom got her mother killed?”

His eyes flash you a moment of fury and his hand grasps at his sword. He goes to pull the blade forth from it’s scabbard but you lash out with a hand and lock your grip around his wrist and hold him there. The two of you struggle momentarily before your superior strength begins to show.

“I don’t have a daughter.” His words were full of effort and vitriol. You smirked at him as you broke away from the struggle and put an arms length of distance between the two of you. His hand stayed on his sword but it remained sheathed.

“Then I don’t have a son.”

The look that overwhelms Ser Devon’s face is one of anger, confusion and fear. You can hear his breathing and once he regains his composure he speaks in low undertones barely above a whisper.

“How do you know? Who told you?”

“Nobody told me, I looked. She has your eyes and hair. So do you think she would appreciate her father getting her mother killed?”
“She has no knowledge that Titus is not her father. Elleanor consented to have her fostered in Lannisport to avoid suspicion and to keep her away from me so none may recognize as you did.”

“The question stands Ser. Quit trying to buy Elleanor’s favour and affection and think about her safety. Use your other head Ser.”

He clenches his fists and looks to the floor in shame but when he looks back to meet your eyes you can see the worry and emotion written clear upon his face as he made to open the door and speak to Elleanor immediately.

You let the man walk into the chambers and left before he came back out again. You instead walked along the familiar halls for a time before coming to the outdoor gardens where Alyssa could so often be found. The winds whipped at bit at the tips of your years and snow was falling from the heavy grey clouds above. It was beginning to form small drifts as the wind pushed it and you could see the plants she had so tenderly grown had died from the shock of cold. You ran your hands over the orchids you had bought her from a qohorick trader and felt the dead petals crumple to the touch and fall leaving a faint brown dusting over the snow.

You cleared off a small seat for yourself on a bench and sat in the cold for a moment to try and enjoy the peace and quiet. Your only company was the howling winds and your own thoughts and by the time you finally stirred from your seat you had to brush off a thin of layer of snow and bring your hands to your ears to prevent them from burning. Dark had set in and you pulled a torch off of a sconce and set it alight with the aid of a brazier and made straight for your chambers.

When you arrived you were quick to peel off your wet clothes and soon joined Alyssa underneath the blankets and furs and she grunted in discomfort from your cold touch as she rolled away. She felt as warm as a forge and you pulled her close despite her struggling and gasps. You held her tight with one hand on a breast and one hand on her growing stomach and as you warmed you felt sleep begin to grab ahold of you and pull your eye lids closed.

--- 19/03/282 ---

You stood at the right of Lady Elleanor while Ser Devon stood proud and stiff on her left as she held court. The man had glowered at you and curled his lip when he saw you again but he had kept his words to himself. Court had ran long as Elleanor addressed the concerns of her populace. Lord Tywin sat staring from a seat on the dais in silent contemplation. Cedrick Lantell had ventured east from Lannisport regarding matters of trade and Elleanor had offered him a room so they might speak in a more private setting. As the court was beginning to wind down Elleanor looked about the room and smiled.

“Lord Tywin Lannister if I may address you personally.”

The head of House Lannister stared at her with hard implacable eyes and rose silently. He did not deign to leave the dais but instead walked to stand directly on front of the Lady of Ember Peak. He loomed over her indominable as Casterly Rock itself but Elleanor’s smile refused to leave her face and she stood from her own seat to return his stare. She addressed Ser Devon without breaking eye contact.
>>
“Ser Devon, if you could be so good as to hand me the royal decree.”

There was a slight clamour about the hall at the mention and Ser Devon soon presents her with the parchment that bore the red dragon of House Targaryen. She spoke at an even level, not addressing the court at large but instead focussing solely on Lord Tywin.

“I have been granted Castamere, by royal decree. Her lands and incomes belong to me and me alone.”

Lord Tywin’s eyes looked as hard as emeralds and you could see his jawline flex even beneath his side whiskers. He put forth his hand and Elleanor put the parchment into his hand as daintily as a maid. Lord Tywin opened the parchment slowly and deliberately before turning his gaze towards the words written on the fine vellum. You were surprised that the parchment did not catch fire such was the blaze behind his eyes but he did not react beyond handing the parchment back and taking his leave.

“May the Seven bless the new Lady of Castamere.”

He turned on his heels deftly and walked straight towards the entrance of the hall and you saw a few members of Tywin’s own court follow their liege as whispers and muttering filled the hall. Elleanor for her own part looked as content and happy as you had ever seen her. The court goes quickly from the hall after that and Elleanor waits patiently until the only people within the room are yourself and Ser Devon.

“That was…deeply satisfying Ser Mervyn. I must say that perhaps I underestimated your political ability. I did not take you for a political creature and yet here you are, playing the game. Now, Ser Devon has informed me that Tyrus’ bastard is alive and well. A healthy boy whom he has named Aemon after the dragon knight.” She tutted her head at the name and looked to you with intent.

“I want the boy, and the whore of a kitchen wench dealt with. These are orders Ser Mervyn, distasteful as they might be. See that they are carried out. This alliance with the Golden Tooth must stand and the boy will be married. I will have no bastard or lowborn girl getting in the way of such a marriage….”

--- How to deal with these orders? ---

Alright I’m thinking I’ll leave this open for a bit of discussion for a while and see where you guys want to take it. In case it isn’t clear Elleanor wants both Aemon and Rose eliminated permanently. There is also the option to take up Titus on his offer to send them to Lantell Manor. Just curious to see what you guys will come up with here
>>

Take up on Titus's offer, but we don't go straight up to him first, we kill time and ''meet'' him by accident, we talk it out and we ride to Ember Peak to arrange the trip for them

This will be difficult. Tyrus is supposed to be part of the force to clear out bandits. We won't be able to sneak off for a day or two detour. I expect Eleanor will be keeping tabs too. She has other servants that might try to tail us and see that the job is done.

Maybe we could intimidate the girl into running away and hiding. With a few gold to get them going where they land but make it clear that returning will result in death.
>>
>>4169415
Elleanor is definitely keeping tabs on us, a girl and baby on the road they are just not gonna make it.

What if we propose not to kill them? tell Elleanor to hold them has hostage for Tyrus to go on with the wedding, if they are dead what stops Tyrus from running away or doing something stupid?

>>
--- 20/03/282 ---

The ride down to headwaters had taken longer than normal on account of the snow. You had chosen to ride your palfrey down and though she was sure footed and a comfortable ride the stone had proven slick. The mass of Lannister guardsmen were in a commotion as they prepared to leave and tents were being packed on carts or mules. You headed into the Sleeping Lion to ask around after the girl from Ember Peak and a group of locals were quick to direct you to the house she was living in.

You’d followed the mans directions down a side street and found a small shack that sat slightly apart from the rest and dismounted before tying up the reins to a post that looked as if it was once part of a fence. You knocked on the door heavily and when it parted open you saw a young familiar face staring back at you. She was pretty in a common sort of way with dark brown hair and common eyes. She had a tired look to her that reminded you of Alyssa after she had given birth to Marqus.

“M’lord. May I…may I help you?”

“Might I come in? I thought I might meet my nephew. Rosie was it?”

“Rose, Ser. And of course. Please, come in.”

The shack was better furnished than many a hovel you’d stayed in. Fresh rushes covered the floor and a fire was burning in the stone hearth. A fur covered bed sat against the far wall while a table and two chairs sat across from them. A crude wooden bascinet stood at the foot of the bed and when you looked down you saw a babe swaddled in grey roughspun. Someone, likely Tyrus, had pinned a small red eagle badge to the cloth. The boy was only a few weeks old but when you looked at him you saw the same eyes that you saw when you looked at Marqus. Green eyes that spoke of the churning sea, although the small few wisps of hair that dotted young Aemon’s hair were the common brown of his mother. You picked up the boy and began to rock him softly.

“He looks healthy.”

“The midwife said so too. A strong and healthy boy. Tyrus named him after Aemon the Dragonknight.”
>>
You looked back at the girl and made a face. It was half grin and half grimace. While fatigue and childbirth had taken it’s toll she still looked happy. Perhaps even blissful. If she knew what Elleanor intended for her and her babe you had no doubt this would be a different interaction.

“Do you think he’s strong enough to travel?”

“Travel m’lord?

“Yes. Do you think that you and the boy are strong enough to travel?”

“I…I dunno. Why do we need to travel? Tyrus said he was going to be bringing us more blankets and firewood the next time he came. Where would we need to travel to?”

You blinked your eyes. Your fingers itched. Half a year ago your dirk would have been unsheathed and drawn across the girls throat and the babe would have been smothered but perhaps fatherhood had changed you. You had no desire to murder a babe and despite the falling out between Tyrus and yourself you had no desire to intentionally hurt the boy.

--- Ser Mervyn’s Persuasion (Intimidate) Roll ---
Rolled 14 vs DC: 9
Result: Two Degrees of Success

Your look darkened while you stared at the babe you held close to your chest. You didn’t look at the woman and you spoke softly so as not to frighten the child with a sudden outburst of anger.

“Because you and young Aemon here are in danger.”

“D-danger? From who Ser? Tyrus said…Tyrus said that we’d be safe here. That nobody would bother us.”

You could already here the fright and confusion in her voice. You stroked the babes cheek and he blinked at you but remained quiet.

“I cannot say who. But I’m here to tell you that if you don’t leave that you and Aemon will both end up dead. Stabbed, drowned or smothered. It matters not. But you will be cold and there will be nothing Tyrus can do to protect you. Do you understand me?”

You placed the babe down back into his crib and turned to his mother. She was near of an age with Tyrus, fifteen or sixteen maybe, and she hid her fear about as well as could be expected for a girl her age.

“Where…where am I…we…supposed to go Ser?”

You follow the river south. You’ll come to where Reynold lands meet Serrett. Find a village along the river in Serrett lands. Tyrus is to be fostered in Silverhill. You’ll be closer to him there. But don’t attract attention to yourself. Tell nobody you’re leaving and don’t mention who the babes father is. Understand?” The girl was staring off into nothing and you raised your voice to her. “Understand!?”

Aemon began to wail at the sudden sound and Rose rushed to her babe and began to rock him. It was only once he’d calmed down once more that she seemed to remember you were in the room.
>>
“Ser, we’ve no coin to travel. I’ve only a small amount of bread and cheese and nothing that will hold enough to travel such a distance. Tyrus always brings food when he visits, or leaves coin if he’ll be gone for a long time. How…how do I know you aren’t trying to trick me?”

Your dirk was in your hand before she could blink and you’d pushed her up against the wall and had the blade at her throat. Your hand clamped down on her mouth to prevent her from screaming and you whispered to her deathly serious.

“Because I’m the one who is supposed to kill you, you simple fucking girl. You being alive has Tyrus convinced that he won’t marry the girl his mother wishes, and your bastard puts a stain on his worth. But I for one am not in the mood to murder a babe and it’s mother. Now, when I let you go you aren’t going to scream are you? You’re going to stay quiet?”

She nods hesitantly and you let her go and all she manages is a sharp inhale which she lets out in a wavering breath as she tries to gain her composure. Your dirk finds it’s way to back to it’s sheathe and you pull forth a chair and take a seat as you consider what to do with Rose and Aemon….

You reached down to your belt and pulled out a small coin purse that you handed to the girl. It thudded heavily into her palm and she went wide eyed at the weight.

“There are twenty silver stags in there. Will that be enough to get you through out of Headwaters comfortably?” The girl nodded hesitantly. “Good. Now, dress appropriately and we’ll be on our way. You’re taking a ferry down the Lesser Mander. And also, I’ll need a lock of your hair.”

“Why do you…oh.”

--- Ser Mervyn’s Awareness (Notice) Test ---
Rolled 13 vs DC: 18
Result: Test Failed

You pulled out your dirk again and cut through the long brown lock she offered and tucked it into your belt. She had covered herself in a heavy woolen cloak and had Aemon bundled up tightly in as much swaddling as she dared. To the girls credit she did not cry as she fled her home but you still made a habit of looking over your shoulder at anyone who seemed to be travelling towards the docks. A messenger here and what looked like some hired swords there but nobody stuck out as suspicious to your eyes.

The wood of the dock thunked under your heels and you were quick to find a small ferry that on an ordinary day might serve to transport perhaps ten people down the river. You handed the ferryman a gold dragon to hire the boat for the girl he hadn’t even bothered to bite the coin before he was helping the young girl into the boat. He was an older man, and was as thin as the pole he carried to push off the bottom and navigate the river, but he seemed honest enough. Not an hour later they were gone and out of eye shot. You’d told the girl that Tyrus would find her within a few months, and if it was more than four moons to make her way to Silverhill itself.

You’d left your horse so as to not arouse suspicion but as you made your way back to retrieve the animal you could not help but feel like you were being watched. It was almost as if the people who looked at you in passing knew you were skirting orders. To your credit, Elleanor hadn’t specified how she had wanted the girl and the babe dealt with even though you had known what she meant, distasteful as it was.

All there was to do now was to hope that Elleanor wouldn’t find out, and if she did, that the slight wouldn’t be taken to seriously although as you returned back up the hill towards where Ember Peak loomed you found it unlikely that she would. She had waited over twenty years to orchestrate her plot to retake Castamere that was nearly complete. Would she take such elaborate means to organize her revenge on something as simple as this?

--- 24/03/282 ---

The past few days since Rose and Aemon’s departure had been quiet and you took that in stride as you set about the preparation to march with a small host of men further west towards Castamere. You’d seen Tyrus fuming about the halls one afternoon and you assumed that he had returned from Headwaters to find his lover and child gone. You had decided to keep the knowledge of their whereabouts to themselves however until you were well clear of Elleanor’s hearing.

You had spent most of your days amidst the armoury and the training yard as you drilled the men of Ember Peak. Titus had spoken to you about raising another regiment of infantry once the coin from King’s landing and had made it clear that he wished to have it done sooner rather than later. You’d need to put out a call for a captain in the coming days before you left and the talk of naming captains had brought your own cavalry to your mind. You had no official second amongst the Loyal Reins. Ser Art of the Pendric Hills had been your defacto second in command since you had been given your captaincy but he was getting long in the tooth and both Ser Cardyn and Ser Austin were better fighters.

Ser Austin was easily the best of your men. He had unhorsed you twice in the lists and was a considerable swordsman as well. He wore his honour like a shield and he prided himself on his chivalry. Ser Cardyn Lantell however was a more underhanded type of knight. He was the kind of man you could instruct to perform an unscrupulous task and he would see it done, rather like yourself if you were honest. The thoughts ran through your head as you sat at a small desk inside the armoury as you pored over numbers and ledgers regarding arrows, shields and spears. In your boredom you had begun to sketch out the room before you on a spare piece of parchment and the scratching sound of quill on paper was a satisfying one.

Drawing was something you had found yourself doing on occasion since your appointment. You particularly enjoyed buildings and rooms. You had even tried to sketch the enormity of Harrenhal from memory although it hadn’t come out as well as you might have liked. The sound of a door opening snaps you back to reality and you see Alyssa walking towards you carrying Marqus in her arms. She smiled wide as she strode across the room before sitting on your desk and passing your son to you. By the gods he had grown fast. He was eight months old now and had even begun to crawl. You remembered Alyssa running to find you amidst the yard and you’d thought something had happened to the boy but when she had calmed down enough to tell you what had happened you had beamed with pride. You had rushed back to your chambers with her to watch your boy take his first bumbling movements across the floor. Right now however he was content to sit in your lap and was pinching at the signet ring on your smallest finger and was doggedly attempting to put it in his mouth.
>>
“Hello Husband. I thought we might pay you a visit and see what Marqus’ hard working father was doing on this lovely day.” Her voice was sweet and kind while her smile was enough to drive any ill thoughts from your mind.

“Just going over numbers. Need to make sure the armoury is stocked, and that we’ve enough arms and armour to raise a new regiment of infantry. Not to mention that the lads are ready for when we march out to Castamere.”

Alyssa looked over and picked up a single leaf as she went over the numbers herself but when she went for a second one her eyes were drawn to something else. You tried to place a hand on the stack of papers but she deftly yanked out the sketch of the armory that you had haphazardly covered. She looked at it with wide eyes and a look of shock.

“Did you draw this Merv?” A peevish look came on your face as you groaned and rolled your eyes.

“By the gods Mervyn, this is pretty good. I had no idea that you could draw like this. If you practiced who knows…you might have been wasted as a knight.” She teased at you. “Do you have others? Can I see them?”

A few moments of pleading and you attempting to resist saw you place Marqus on the floor momentarily while you opened a drawer and pulled out a few pictures you had drawn. The rough sketch of Harrenhal, one of Ember Peak’s courtyard and one of the entrance to the small castle from and outside view. Alyssa stares at the parchments still shocked enough that her jaw was slightly ajar but both of you are soon shocked when Marqus had been tugging on your pant leg with his thumb and forefinger and blurted out “DA”. The both of you looked at the boy with eyes wide and the did so again. “Dadada”. You reached down excitedly with a smile that reached from ear to ear and tossed the boy into the air with a laugh and as you caught him you turned to Alyssa and the three of you embraced lovingly.

“That’s his first word Mervyn. “Da.” I knew it would be. That boy loves you like you wouldn’t believe. Sometimes I think more than he does his own mother.” She made a pouty face but you knew it was in jest. “Alright Marqus, now say Mama. Ma. Ma.” She kept at the baby talk for a moment but Marqus kept repeating the syllable da over and over again.

“Alyssa, do you mind if I ask for an unbiased opinion?”
>>
“Not at all Husband. What matters are on your mind?”

“Appointing a lieutenant for the Loyal Reins. I’m stuck between Ser Art, Ser Austin and Ser Cardyn. Do you have any opinions on the matter?”

She pauses briefly and scratches at her chin for a moment before regarding you. “I would avoid naming Ser Cardyn. He’s hot headed and…and some of the stories Cerenna has told me would have me believe he can be unsavoury. I’m not sure he takes his knightly vows as seriously as he might. Ser Art is a good man. He’s been in service here at Ember Peak for a number of years and was captain before you. Ser Austin would be a good choice as well though. He is young, chivalrous and skilled. If your men admire him like half of women do I’m sure they’ll respect him, and he’ll ensure they act chivalrously. Does that help at all?”

You cocked your head and shrugged your shoulders as you sat back down into your seat and sat staring at Marqus as he in turn regarded you. A matter of practicality, honour and reality. You thought to yourself about what value you would wish to impose on your son, because the Loyal Reins were almost your own children of a sort…

--- Who to name as Lieutenant of the Loyal Reins? ---

>Ser Cardyn Lantell – The youngest and most hot headed of the three men. A man with a temper and a callous view of life and honour. Will turn the company into a more unscrupulous group of men. They will not balk at the tasks asked of them although they may gain a negative reputation if to many tasks of that nature are asked of them.

>Ser Art of the Pendric Hills – The oldest man of the three. He will keep the Reins much the same as they are now, roughly separated into two groups of men. Some chivalrous knights, some black hearted men. This may eventually lead to infighting depending on the actions of their Captain.

>Ser Austin Osgrey – A man of an age with Mervyn. He is easily the most honourable of the three and will hold the company to a high standard of chivalry. The Loyal Reins will be viewed with more favour by other lords and ladies of the realm, but may outright refuse to commit any treacherous acts.

You made up your mind as Marqus babbled and laughed while Alyssa made a face and played peek-a-boo with him. You had done whatever was necessary in your life to get you where you were. Many would say your honour was forever stained if they knew of half of the deeds you had done in the dark, but you planned for them to stay there. Perhaps with Ser Austin as your second your men might take after his lead and you could benefit from his chivalrous nature.

--- 25/03/282 ---

You were enjoying a meal with the Reins in their barracks before you announced your decision to name Ser Austin your lieutenant. It was a rowdy thing with all of your men as they dug into their trenchers and wine and ale was poured. You were sat beside Ser Jeremy Flowers and Ser Peter Payne but you stood to your feet and walked to the head of the table. A raucous cheer went up as men raised they cups and horns to you.

“Right lads. I think it goes without saying that I’m proud to be your captain!” Cheers went up again.

“I also think that I’ve been remiss in one of my duties and that is naming a lieutenant from amongst you to act as my official second in command. Now I’d like to make an honourable mention of Ser Art, who served as your Captain before me. I’d have picked you but I don’t think that a man who’s hair is running to grey is the man I need. I need a man who can walk without the use of a stick.” The man laugh and those nearest to Art clap him on the shoulders and a toast is raised to the oldest man of the Loyal Reins.

“But in all seriousness men, I would like you all to join me in welcoming Ser Austin Osgrey as the new Lieutenant of the Loyal Reins.”

Ser Austin smiles and another toast is given to applause and shouting. You eye Cardyn carefully and see him clapping begrudgingly but there was no smile on his face. His lip curled up and once the celebration begins to slow down he stands and takes his leave. You notice Ser Tristan the Dornishman and Ser Walder Erenford follow him not long after but you were unsurprised by that. The three of them were the meanest men in your company and were often found in each others presence. It would be something to keep an eye on and perhaps you might have to speak to Cardyn personally. You knew first hand that having an attack dog was a man worth having.

--- Break ---

Alright I'm going to be resuming the quest on Monday/Tuesday and we'll pick back up again with Elleanor's funds arriving at Ember Peak along with some friends and some news. Thank you all for playing and for your patience and I'll see you all soon!
>>
--- 02/04/282 ---

It was midafternoon and you were training in the yard with Ser Cardyn. The two of you were using blunted steel but the combat was still dangerous enough. The way he fought reminded you of Tyrus after a fashion, although he had no regard for chivalry. Throwing an attack at the head or eyes, or to an unsuspecting opponent’s back was something he was not above. You watched him warily as the two of you circled one another amidst the din of the rest of the yard. He lunged forward before angling his sword downwards to strike at your thigh. If this had been life or death he would have been aiming for your knee but your shield came down to protect your leg regardless.

You countered the blow but swinging your hammer down with an overhead swing that Cardyn manages to block most of the blow but the hammer still catches the top of his helmet and his helmet dings satisfyingly. You leaned into your shield to create distance and send the man back a few steps. You press onwards not giving him time to get his feet under him and relentlessly hammer his shield before sending him to the dirt. You stepped over him and kicked the practice sword out of his hand and pressed a knee into the mans chest pinning him in place.

“Yield?”

An inarticulate grunt of frustration echoes forth from the visored helm as he struggled in his attempt to dislodge you but finds your strength up to the task.

“Fucking hells. I yield.”

You stood and offered the man a hand but instead of taking it he got up under his own power and took up his stance again. The man had felt cheated you knew. He was a younger son with a chip on his shoulder, and had a tumultuous relationship with his family at best. In fact the only member he’d spoken of kindly was his sister, Cerenna.

“You sure you want to go again Cardyn?”

The nod of his head and hefting of his shield was his only way of response and you shrugged in return before you heard a horn blow from the gatehouse. It interrupted nearly all of the men in the yard and you soon walked quickly to the wall and as you looked out you saw a host of over two hundred men approaching up the hill towards Ember Peak. The colours they bore were the red dragon on black of House Targaryen, as well as the golden horse and mace and dagger of Houses Malroy and Chelsted. Within the centre of it all were three large wagons tarped in with heavy canvass and you ordered the gates opened as the men poured into the courtyard. A man wearing the colours of House Chelsted soon comes forth and introduces himself with an extended hand.
>>
“Ser Raymun Cheslted, cousin to Lord Qarlton Chelsted. I lead these men, and I have dire portents. I needs to see the Lady Elleanor of Ember Peak immediately.”

“I am Ser Mervyn Reynold, Master at Arms. I take it these wagons are Lady Elleanor’s coin?”

“They are Ser, but we have received news upon the road of more important and dire portents. There is talk of rebellion and treason so please Ser. Take me to your lady.”

You looked out and found a man, barking out orders to inform Lady Elleanor of the sudden visitors and that Ser Raymun sought audience with her. You also began to order your men to cease training for the day to return to the barracks in order to make room for the surplus of men. As you were taking charge of the sudden chaos you found yourself looking at the sombre face of Ser Pastorn Malroy. He broke into a dour smile and the two of you clasped hands.

“Pastorn! Brought my horses I imagine?”

“Good day Ser Mervyn, I did indeed. Although I fear that they may see war before long after Ser Raymun delivers his news.”

“What does he mean to say?”

“Lord Stark and his heir are dead. Lord Robert Baratheon’s betrothed disappeared and the Crown Prince was threatened. If the message was to be believed then there are banners rising in the Vale.”

He continues to tell you more as you two take his horse to the stables and soon find yourself walked towards the great hall of Ember Peak where Lady Elleanor was to be holding court.
>>
--- Two hours later ---

You were standing beside Lady Elleanor while she sat on her seat high on her dais. Ser Raymun had knelt before her and had been given bread and salt in a display of guest right before she bid him to speak.

“My lady, I bring grave tidings for all leal servants of the Crown. Whilst travelling on the road we were caught by a messenger. The young daughter of Lord Rickard Stark had disappeared after the Tourney at Harrenhal and her brother, being the hot head that he was, jumped to conclusions. He rode to King’s Landing and wrongfully accused the Crown Prince of abducting the girl. Naturally good King Aerys could not allow such treason to go unpunished and Lord Stark came to answer for his sons crimes. He asked for a trial by combat and…and he lost. King Aerys then sent for the now Lord Eddard Stark to come to King’s Landing to swear his fealty to the king but Lord Jon Arryn counselled the young man to join him in rebellion. There is fighting in the Vale now, and I fear that Gulltown has been taken by rebels. King Aerys now calls his banners across the Seven Kingdoms my lady.”

The assembled crowd had nearly gone into an uproar and Elleanor merely sat upon her seat. Her eyes had twitched slightly wider but she kept her emotions under control and waited for the roar to fall back to a lull before she stood to address the crowd.

“House Reynold was first risen to the title of Lords when they stood beside House Targaryen against the Blackfyre Pretenders. Ser Leland became Lord and Ember Peak has been loyal to the red dragon ever since. House Reynold shall answer the call Ser. I shall send my banners to aid House Targaryen.”

The hall once again fills with cheers and shouting although you saw a few select people who’s mirth was less than visible, Lord Titus being the most visible among them. Elleanor than ordered the hall emptied and for preparations to be made. As you nodded and went to see to her orders she grabbed you by the arm and the delicate grip felt tighter than any you had ever felt.

“Ser Mervyn, you will lead the forces of House Reynold, at least until a time that Tygon can meet you in the field. I imagine Lord Titus will balk at such a thing with Lord Tywin’s express permission and will hole himself up in his chambers. I would be surprised if the man is not already rushing to write Lord Tywin about these recent events. I will write Tygon at Hornvale, but until then you will lead our men. Is this understood?”

You nodded your head. There was a grimace on your face that you could not hide despite your best efforts. The thought of leaving Alyssa pregnant to leave for war once more made you feel ill.

“Understood m’lady. I’ll see to the preparations.”

Alyssa was waiting for you outside the chamber doors and you placed a hand on her growing belly. The two of you began to walk the halls once more in silence before you came to the junction where you needed to part ways so you could see to your men.

“Merv, I…”

You put a finger on her lips and shushed her before leaning in to kiss her softly on the lips.

“It’ll all be okay Ally. I promise.”

--- 15/04/282 ---

The last two weeks had been a frenzy of commotion. Elleanor had sent ravens by the unkindness to lords all over the Seven kingdoms. Titus had been seen little, and when he was it was closely followed by Ser Lionel Ruttiger. Your own days had been spent in the yard and armoury preparing baggage trains and what not, while your nights were spent with Alyssa and Marqus enjoying as much of them as you could.

You found yourself now however sitting at a small table in Elleanor’s solar along with Ser Devan Drake, Ser Raymun Chelstand as well as Ser Pastorn Malroy to discuss the state of what might now be called a rebellion.

“The Vale has largely risen against the Iron Throne, and if I am to be believed the North has almost to a man gathered behind the now Lord Eddard Stark. Banners are being raised in the Stormlands but Lord Robert does not have their entirety behind him. Much of the Reach has already declared for the Crown, while the Riverlands are largely torn in two. Ser Mervyn, I will send you and my men south towards Goldengrove so that you may join the host of Lord Rowan and march with the Reach. Ser Raymun, Ser Pastorn, I will not command either of you to join Ser Mervyn here however travel through the Riverlands may be dangerous in the coming days for men of either loyalty.”

The two crownlanders looked to one anothers with uncertain looks upon their faces…

“If the Riverlands are divided you’d be best to travel through the Reach in order to make it home safely.”

The two men chewed their lips as they considered your words but it was Ser Raymun who spoke first.

“The Gold Road will be the fastest route in order for me and my men to return home. I’ve two hundred and twenty men at my command, I reckon that ought to be enough to give any scouts or outriders pause. Blacksaithe needs her men about her walls and the sooner the better.”

“Aye, but what good does it do you to risk not reaching them at all Ser? Travelling through the Reach may be slower but it almost guarantees that you’ll make it home.”

“Me and mine will take my chances on the road Ser.”

“And you Pastorn?”

The young Valyrian looked at you with his long and melancholic gaze briefly before reaching forward for a pitcher of water and filling his glass. He swirled it in his cup for a long moment before placing the cup back down.

“Your words have the ring of truth about them Ser Mervyn. Steadhold is a strong castle, and much of her garrison is still about her, only missing my own cavalry. I will accompany you south Ser.”

The two of you locked eyes and nodded in unison whilst Elleanor began to pull forth a piece of parchment and told you of her orders.

“Ser Mervyn, you will take the Loyal Reins, as well as our infantry and scouts to Golden Grove. The archers and garrison shall remain in Ember Peak as a defense force. You shall leave on the morrow and sail down the Lesser Mander. You may need to stop to get your scouts on board as I believe they are still on duty patrolling the Auric Hills. And Ser Mervyn, do be careful you should not lose anything down the river. I hear it is quite treacherous this time of year.

--- Later that night ---

You and Alyssa were basking in the glow of both the fireplace and your love making. It had been raw, intense and loving. Her breasts were covered in bruises and bite marks while you could feel the furrows she had carved into your back with her nails.

You lay there admiring her before leaning down to kiss her swollen belly as tenderly as you could. She ran her fingers through your blonde hair and looked down at you with a sad smile.

“You won’t be here to greet this child when it comes into the world either.”

“Well, the birthing bed is no place for a man anyways.”

“Mervyn, I’m scared. You know what Maester Aethan said…”

You crawled back up towards your wife and kissed her once on each cheek before kissing her softly on the lips and spoke so softly that even a mouse could not have heard your words.

“I guess we both need to make promises to each other to make sure we come home safe.”
>>
She smiled at that, and crawled into your embrace as you tangled your fingers in her hair and breathed in her smell.

“Merv I’ve a going away gift for you. It was supposed to be for your nameday but I suppose you might get it a bit early now.”

She stood from the bed slowly, taking care not to lose her balance and strolled to a small side table and opened a drawer before pulling forth a small silver locket that she handed to you. You opened it up and smiled when you saw your wifes image painted there in a vivid myrish style.

“Now you can’t forget me while you’re at war.”

“I could never forget Alyssa, but thank you. Don’t forget me when you’re fighting your own Ally. I’m with you. Always.”

“Speaking of that Merv, when Marqus was born he went weeks without being named. What do you think we should name the child? I’d like to name it Madeline if it’s a girl, although I have no preferences if it’s a boy. Do you have any?

No hard stats were given out but some general characteristic were drawn.

The girl is going to be of average height and thin, with straight red hair and sea green eyes. A very classic "Reynold" look. She is going to be very bright but leaning towards rebellious.

The boy is going to be a touch shorter than his older brother, with wavy blonde hair and green eyes. He is going to come across as a lordly man, and is going to be very shrewd/clever.

“I’ve been thinking maybe Maynard for the boy?” It was a fairly blunt attempt at flattery towards your wifes mother, and transparent as it was it was better safe than sorry given the circumstances.

“Maynard…it’s a strong name. I’m sure Mother would like it. And if it’s a girl?”

“If it’s a girl than her mother may name her. Seems only fair to me?”

That brought a smile to her lips and before long she had gone to fetch Marqus and soon your small family was falling asleep together on the wolfskin fur that covered your bed. Your son fell asleep first and you watched as Alyssa fought fatigue but eventually lost. Her eyes grew heavier and heavier before ultimately closing and you could hear the softest of snores coming from her. Sleep did not come for you however. You stayed wide awake and stared at the flames until they died and became embers.

You thought about what might happen when you returned home. Would you have a happy family of a wife and two children? Just Alyssa and Marqus? Marqus and a child whom you had not yet met. Then your mind runs to Elleanor and what path she would take in the aftermath of this war. Those were questions you knew not the answers to but you knew one thing. You would protect your family from anyone who threatened them be they a highborn lord or lowborn scum.

--- 17/04/02 ---

The departure had been hard but one you were glad that was over. You had worn the locket Alyssa had given you around your neck and found your hand reaching up to reassure yourself that it was there. House Reynold had no river ships in their employ and so had instead hired every available vessel in Headwaters as you floated down the river towards Goldengrove.

The stop to make contact with Ser Sandor Hill had been painless enough and soon enough you were heading south with two hundred infantry and forty heavy cavalry. It was not as much as you would have liked but it was what you had to work with. You resolved that when you had the means to have your own men your military would be strong. You had aspirations of a host of men that others would fear to anger, not this small host of men that claimed to guard the Ember Pass.

The land changed as you came from out of the mountains and into the hills, before eventually coming into the open plains and fields of the Reach. Even in the depths of winter it still seemed that the land was lively and bits of green vibrantly shot through the white of the snow that seemed on the verge of melting.
>>
--- 26/04/282 ---

Goldengrove was as beautiful and impressive a castle as Alyssa had made it sound. Impressive whitewashed walls shot up from the banks of the river and golden crenellations marked the top. The golden tree of House Rowan flew from every tower and although it was nowhere near as large as Harrenhal it was still an enormous castle. The fact that Marqus might squire for the Lord of such an impressive place made your puff out your chest silently and smile a small grin.

As your foot touched down on the docks you were presented with a situation. The river port was positively bustling, and it might prove difficult to house the men you had brought south with you. You could head towards the castle proper and see if Lord Rowan might be able to aid you in the matter, as well as make your presence known to the Lord of Goldengrove. The lack of Westermen was quite telling to your eyes. Elsewise you could head towards an organized but large camp that had numerous banners waving from various flag poles. Surely there would be someone important enough to inform of your presence and some sort of camp staff that might be able to provide your men with lodging or food…

Time totally got away on me here. I'll update this tomorrow. I'll include the write in about Ser Austin as well!

“Ser Austin, take the men towards the camp. See if you can’t sort out lodgings with whoever has been put in charge there. I’ll head towards the castle proper and make sure Lord Rowan knows of our presence. Even in a mass of men such as this two hundred some odd men might make waves if their flying unfamiliar heraldry.”

Ser Austin snapped into a sharp salute before nodding his affirmations and he was soon shouting orders to the assembled Westermen and you patiently waited until they were on their way before you began to make your way towards the castle proper. It was a beautiful castle and as you followed the well tended cobblestone road you found yourself thinking of Alyssa and her desire to visit here.

It had a soaring white curtain wall nearly thirty feet tall and well trimmed hedges at the base that at closer inspection were thorny brambles that would help defend the castle should it find itself under siege. As you approached the main gate you were waylaid by a sergeant in Rowan colours. It took little to be allowed within the curtain wall, only having to give your name and state that you were of the nobility before you were ushered in. The town you found was one that was bright and lively, although there was tension in the air as well that could be expected of a people preparing for war.

Many of the buildings were white washed as well and you took in a deep breath of the smell. There was flowery layer over top of earth, as well as coals and fire mixed in with the smell of human bodies living in close proximity. All in all it was a pleasant smell compared to the larger cities of Westeros.

You stepped deftly to avoid trodding in a particularly foul looking patch of nightsoil as you finally came to the moat where a drawbridge was lowered and what looked like household knights were guarding the way into the castle of Goldengrove proper. You waited in line patiently as various people were trying to find their way into the castle for whatever reasons, although you noticed most were being turned away. Your turn finally came and you saw a grizzled old man with parchment and quill standing between two well armoured knights.

“Name Ser?”

“I might ask you yours first.” The man scowls but he introduces himself regardless.

“My name is Ser George Flowers, Captain of the Garrison of Goldengrove. Now, I’ll ask your name again Ser if you have any desire to be permitted inside Lord Rowan’s castle.”

Your eyes locked together and you gestured with your chin towards the black eagle on your breast and you can see a flicker of recognition in the mans eyes but before he can connect who you were you decided to remind him.

“My name is Ser Mervyn Reynold of Ember Peak. I serve there as Lady Elleanor Reynold’s Master at Arms as well as the Captain of the Loyal Reins. At least that’s what my friends call me, my foes have called me “The Black Eagle of Ember Peak.”

There it was. The man knew you, or at least who you were. The look of recognition was evident on his face.

“You… you’re the man who Ser Mathew spoke of, where he gained his knighthood in the squires melee. Ember Peak, yes I thought I recognized the eagle sigil. You’re the man who killed someone at said wedding tournament in a duel. What was his name again… Ser…”

“Ser Herman Swyft.” You finished for him curtly.

“Yes that’s right. Ser Mathew spoke often of that wedding for months afterwards. Of how a man slew a knight who had supposedly insulted the honour of his wife. Was there any truth to that Ser?”

“There is Ser. But it is a long tale and I can see that there is quite a long wait to see Lord Mathis behind me.”

Ser George poked his head around your soldier to look at the ever growing line and he groaned under his breath. “Perhaps another time then. Please Ser, feel free to come and go at your own pleasure.”

“Ser George, if you know who I am than you must know I am distant family to Lord Mathis and I must needs speak with him. Is there anyone I might speak with to hurry a meeting with him?”

The man looks over his shoulder at the two knights by his side but leans in conspiratorially all the same.

“If you want to see Lord Mathis, Ser Mathew can often be found about the stables or the yard. Lady Bethany can often be found about the gardens. Either of them might be able to get you a meeting with his lordship sooner than if you simply wait your turn like everyone else. Although, rumour has it a bribe to the steward might find your time slot moved ahead…”

You thanked the man and walked confidently into Goldengrove and decided to…

You decided that it would be best to approach Lord Mathis Rowan’s son as opposed to his wife. You seemed to remember the man having a certain amount of fondness and pride for his firstborn son. It was an easy thing to find the yard and before long you were looking out at the vast training yard that was full nearly to bursting. Everywhere you looked there were men training, be it with their squires, each other or wooden and straw dummies.

You saw men clad in the golden tree of Rowan but you did not recognize the heir to Goldengrove himself. You stood and watch the calibre of the reachmen you would likely be fighting alongside and found that they were as varied a bunch as you had ever seen. A few even looked like that may be able to give yourself a challenge while more than a few looked like you could have beaten them as a boy with a willow switch.

It didn’t take long for you to soon head off towards the stables that were housed near yard. You found the small of straw, horses and dung to be a comforting one, although these stables were held to an impeccable standard. The main hallway was kept free of droppings and loose straw and as you walked by the stalls it appeared as if the had all been mucked out recently. The pedigree of the horses was on display as well and you would have sworn you could see a horse or two that reminded you of Pastorn’s golden coursers.

You found your quarry in a stall hand feeding a resplendent grey destrier a sugar cube and Ser Mathew Rowan turns when he notices your presence and smiles.

“Ser Mervyn Reynold if I recall correctly! Good day Ser, I must say that I am most surprised to see you here. What brings you to my humble home?”

“It’s good to see you as well Ser. Only the reasons for my coming are the same as most outside your walls. War.”

The young man gave a fake grimace and the glint of a real smile at you. “Of course, of course. How could I forget with an army encamped outside our walls. It is an exciting time no? I daresay I cannot wait until we have the opportunity to put these rebels in their place.”

Oh the naivety of youth. You played along with the man’s enthusiasm for war knowing full well that few men truly had the stomach for what war demanded of them. They would deal with it in their own ways but not a man who marched to war came home the same. It was only then that you decided to ask for your favour…
>>
“Now Ser, I have a need to speak with your father, only I can imagine that he is a very busy man at the moment. Do you think it possible to perhaps gain me an audience with him sooner rather than later?

“Well I should certainly think so Ser. My father is indeed a busy man, but I can perhaps arrange a meeting for tonight? Sometime in between his plans with his various bannermen? Will twenty minutes suffice for your needs?”

“I reckon that’ll work perfectly Ser.”

“Excellent, walk with me a mite Ser Mervyn.” You followed the man out of the stables and together the two of you walked about the castle discussing all matter of things although somehow the young man always ties everything back to Tygon’s wedding tourney where he was knighted.

“I must say Ser, although my father might have disapproved of the extent of your vengeance but I for one find it to be quite chivalrous. Were I wed I would not stand by and let some lickspittle insult her honour, let alone the honour of her family by extension at their own wedding. Ser I have a favor to ask of you in return for organizing this meeting. I should wish for you to beseech my father that I may be given a place of command, particularly of the cavalry. A company or two is no more than I ask, and if on of them contained a man who defeated Ser Tygett Lannister in a single tilt, well all the better… What say you Ser?”

Awesome. I'll get to writing here and try to bang this stuff out before the quest falls off the board

Well there's not a lot that we can ask him other than to exchange information and maybe gossip a little, maybe find out something on the enemy forces

An uncomfortable silence filled the air as you made a face while you looked into the dirt.

“I’m afraid I cannot Ser Mathew. My men already have a commander, even if he has not arrived yet.”

“And who might that be Ser?”

“Tygon Reynold. The heir to Ember Peak. These are his men, as am I, and I will lead them until he presents himself as my oaths of service demand. Besides Ser, you are young yet and there is little glory to be gained in commanding an army from the rear. Glory resides on the front lines, and I’m sure that your own fathers cavalry would be besides themselves without you at the lead”

--- Ser Mervyn’s Persuasion (Charm) Test ---
Rolled 13 vs DC: 15
Results: Test Failed

The young mans face had gone flat with disappointment. You could see anger warring with something you couldn’t quite place behind his eyes but in the end you saw the anger die. He straightened his posture and spoke to you in a formal tone.

“I fear you may be mistaken Ser. Glory lies in victory. If you still wish to meet with my father be in the great hall in three hours time. Good day Ser.”

You ran your hand through your hair and sighed as the young man walked away from you. Perhaps snubbing a lords son might come to bite you in the ass later, but you were not in the position to give him what he wanted, nor to ask his father for such a boon for his son. The fact he even asked you likely meant that he had already approached his father about the matter and had been refused.

You found the great hall within an hour and enjoyed a pleasant luncheon until a servant approached you and you followed the man through the maze like castle until you were climbing a spiral staircase for many flights until you came to a small landing and the servant knocked on the door and soon disappeared inside. The man comes out a moment later and ushers you inside. You saw Lord Mathis sitting behind an incredibly ornate desk that was carved into the shape of a sweeping canopy of trees as he pored over an army of papers. He barely looks over the papers when he beckons you to sit down in front of him.
>>
“Ser Mervyn Reynold. My son informed me you have brought men from the West. How many do you bring?”

“A company of scouts, a company of infantry and two companies of heavy cavalry.”

That gains his attention and he looks up from his work. He looks tired, and almost ten years older than the last time you had seen him. You supposed that organizing an army would take it’s toll on a man.

“The Westerlands send less than three hundred men to aid the crown against these rebels?”

“No my lord, Ember Peak sends that many men. The rest of the Westerlands have yet to declare for either side.”

The man scowls, and furrows emerge in his brow deep enough that you could plant wheat in. He soons returns back to his papers ahead of him.

“I’m unsurprised, merely disappointed. Now tell me Ser, what brings you to my solar? A simple messenger would have sufficed.”

--- Why did you wish to speak with Lord Mathis? ---

>You wished to be given an interim part of his war council, as was your right as the leader of your Westermen

Tygon will replace is when he arrives but we must know what we are getting into before he arrives or we won't be able to advise him

“My lord, I would ask that you grant me a seat on your war council, even if it is only until Tygon joins us after his return from Hornvale.”

The Lord of Goldengrove looks up and places the sheet he was looking at carefully aside. He leans back into his seat and brings a hand to his chin carefully as he studies you for a brief moment.

“Ser, I have dozens of my bannermen clamouring for such an honour. Landed knights and petty lords all attempting to climb the ladder rung by rung. Why would I give a seat to a man such as you?”

“Because I’m not your bannerman my lord. And in truth you are gifting the seat to House Reynold and her heir, and I will only sit on it until Tygon joins us.”

“I will concede that point Ser, however, House Reynold only sends a handful of men. Lord Webber brings with him nearly a thousand men, including a hundred heavy cavalry. Not to mention Ser Owen Osgrey brings three hundred foot and he is only a landed knight. How could I refuse him a spot were I to grant you one? My table is only so large Ser, and a council with too many voices accomplishes nothing.”

“Tygon will represent the Western Contingent, as small as it may. Should more Westermen join us then it will serve to reward the loyalty of those who came first to support the dragon no?”

The man runs his hand through his greying hair and he sighs and almost seems to slump in his seat….

I don't like our chances on lucky either. Could we bring up that his son asked to command our forces?

Alright well that's an out and out failure. I'll take a fourth roll of 3d6 for lucky there please guys.

>>4198971
Well 15 is going to gain you entrance into the council, 18 is going to grant you a low ranking seat, and 21 (which you couldn't actually roll but I figured I'd include it anyways) would have gotten you a proper seat amongst your infinitely betters.

Final rolls are 13, 11, 12. No dice. Looks like Mervyn is going to be under the command of someone else. He'll still be captain of his own cavalry but he'll be given his own orders and what not.

This is an insult and i hope Mervyn take it like one
>>
“I apologize Ser Mervyn, but I cannot grant you what you seek. It would insult too many of my bannermen to see you seated where others who are just as worthy might be. Particularly given your reputation. Word of your deeds have run south with the Lesser Mander and I’ll remind that chivalry is paramount in these lands. My son might speak highly of you, but he is still a half a boy and sees things in his own way. I must decline your request. Now, if there is anything else you might ask of me I expect Lord Crane will be meeting with me shortly…”

You grit your teeth and felt your right hand reflexively ball into a fist. It took you a moment to calm yourself down enough with a deep breath.

“Might I ask what news you’ve heard? Or at least know what your plan is going forward? Something enough that I may tell my men when I return to them?”

“We head south to join with Lord Mace and the rest of his host. From there, along with Lord Tarly, we will strike east towards the Stormlands. If my intelligence is correct then Lord Robert is still trapped within the Stormlands by some of his bannermen. Should they keep him contained we will reinforce them. Should they fail, we will bring our own might to bear and prevent the Stormlords from resupplying with reach grain and fodder. Is that sufficient for you Ser Mervyn?”

You nod and take your leave. You cursed inwardly once the door was closed and began to trudge down the exceedingly long spiral staircase, nearly knocking over a thin man who was ascending the stairs that you took to be Lord Crane. The man opened his mouth to berate you but seemingly can’t find the words as you continue on without so much as a backwards glance.

You headed out of the castle and out through the yard and before long were wandering amidst the camp that consisted of what seemed like thousands of men. Levies, men at arms and knights were all combined together into one large mass and you wandered for nearly an hour before you caught sight of your own banner flying proudly in the wind next to that of Pastorn Malroys.

Ser Austin hailed you and before long you were sitting around a small fire with Ser Austin, Ser Addison Plumm, Ser Pastorn and Ser Sandor Hill all eager to hear what news you might have to tell them, but not before you spat angrily into the fire to hear your spittle sizzle on the burning logs.

“South, to meet the Tyrells. Then east. East to fight the Stormlords.”

“Is everything alright Ser?” It was Ser Austin who asked. You snorted in irritation and slapped your thigh hard.

“Everything is fine Austin. How did you make out yourself?”

Ser Austin smiles and waves at the fire sitting before you. “Well enough Ser. I met with the quartermaster in charge. He’s a surly old goat to be sure. Goes by the name Longbottom Ned, although I can’t fathom why. Anyways, we’ve been added to his list although he wasn’t thrilled about feeding Westermen. A loaf of bread a day, a half pound of salt pork and a tankard of ale for the commonborn men, whereas our own rations are to be a bit more varied than that. Rumour has it that he has a few casks of good wine holed away in one of those tents of his.”

You nodded at that and gave an order for someone to bring out a skin and the five of you are soon taking swigs from it in turn. You could still feel the embers of angers within your chest but there was little else to be done you supposed. Lord Mathis hadn’t said when he planned to march south. You looked up and followed the moon south towards Highgarden and shook your head. Despite it all, you felt a sense of peace you had not felt in a long time wash over you. Killing is what the gods had put you on this earth to do. It was what you were best at. And it was what you were finally going to do.

The night creeps on, and a few more skins of wine get brought out as stories are swapped and expectations laid. Ser Austin speaks of his betrothed while Ser Pastorn talks of horses, and the night soon grows frigid and you make your way to your tent. Ser Austin had seen to it that yours was set up accordingly and you collapsed onto the small bedframe and straw mattress. It was not a regular soldiers tent, but nor was it a tourney pavilion. The itchy straw threatened to poke through and you grinned, half drunk. It was such a familiar feeling, the freedom you had when on campaign. Admittedly it had never been one so grand as this but it felt the same. You may have been shamed and overlooked today, but you would see to it that you gave even high lords a reason to notice you before this rebellion was over. That much you knew.

The last thing you did before you blew out the candle beside your bed as open the locket and stare at the small picture of Alyssa inside of it. A small half smile crept on your face as your caressed the edge of the necklace tenderly before closing it and kissing the lid. Tucking it back under your under shirt, you blew out the candle and shut your eyes, desperate for slumber…

Alright, well that was fun. Things are all starting to come to a head now. I’m going to take a few days to prepare this next thread properly and what not but I’ll be around on here till this thread falls off the board and twitter after that should you all have any questions, criticisms or other feedback as it’s always appreciated. Not so much a war room scene so much as Lord Tarly issuing orders for the van inside his tent.

The "scene" will still be there, just without any input from Mervyn due to that failed roll.
