Your eyes shoot open as you draw breath for the first time in eons. You cough uncontrollably, struggling to catch your breath, your vision finally focuses and your groggy mind starts to catch up. "I-I'm alive...I'm alive! hahah.." You exclaim to yourself in amazement, you exit your pod and immediately fall flat on to the cold tiled floor.

"Come on legs, work with me...!" You stumble over to the neighboring pods that house your colleagues, and you peer inside to see if they have awoken as well. What you meet instead, is the skeleton of one of your colleagues.

You fall back in shock, trying to rationalize what you've seen. "I-I tried to tell them! They wouldn't listen to me...they should've listened to me..it's not my fault...not my fault! I told them! Yeah...s-serves them right..."

You spend a few minutes on the floor like this, calming yourself down. You get up and stumble over to the other pods in the hope that one other person had survived. "There has to be at least one person that listened to me, right?"

You go around checking each and every pod, growing less and less horrified, and more and more angered. “Absolute fools! They didn't even consider something was wrong with the design, too caught in their own little clicks to see the flaws in the very thing that is supposed to save humanity! Each and every one of them, close-minded fools!"

You seethe and berate your deceased colleagues, and find yourself feeling no better after. You slide down and sit beside one of the pods, feeling the slight hum on your back. "What am I supposed to do now? If nobody truly listened, and humanity really is wiped out, what the hell am I supposed to?"

After some thought, you decide to explore the bunker. You stand and head towards the door. "I believe there's a control room somewhere..." You open the door to be met with a blast of frigid air, your medical gown failing to do much other than cover your private parts. You shiver and clatter your teeth, stepping into the dark hallway.

After some stumbling, you manage to find a door. You squint and try to make out what it says above it but to no avail. You open the door and stick out your arms, trying to feel for anything in the room you can make out. You touch something that makes the distinct crinkle of plastic.

You grab hold of the rectangular object and mave it to your face. "MRE's, huh..." You tear it open and it smells absolutely horrid. "Jesus Christ smells like something died! Yeah...looks like the food expired a long time ago. You stumble around more in what you assume to be storage and you find lab coats, pants, coats, and hazmat suits all in different sizes.

"Hopefully when I turn the power on I can find some glasses in her as well..." You also find an assortment of lab equipment. After searching storage you go ou the same way you came in and find a locked door. "Feels like a scanner, I need a key card with access to this room. This is probably the control room."

You breathe a sigh of relief and open the door. When you do, you see a large screen and a control panel below. You run up and type in an input. "Come on, come on work!" Silence.
"Come on there has to be something, think, think!" You type in as many inputs that could possibly lead to the monitor turning on and you start to panic. "Activate, turn on, do something!" And as soon as start to you lose hope

It powers on.

Blinding light fills the room and the acronym "H.P.P." And a symbol of the earth displays on the monitor. A woman in a dress shirt and skirt appears on the screen.

You walk back towards the room full of the cryo-pods in hope of finding a keycard. You close the door behind you, not wanting to let the cold get in the room. You sift through the corpses and find cards around their necks. "One of these should work." You grab as many as you can and make your way to the control room once more.

You hold up one of the cards, but get no indication of whether or not the card was accepted. You jiggle the doorknob, to find that door is still locked. You repeat this process over and over, until finally: you hear a click.

You breathe a sigh of relief and open the door. When you do, you see a large screen and a control panel below. You run up and type in an input. "Come on, come on work!" Silence.

"Computer, activate emergency power source." You hear a whirring sound and after what feels like an eternity, the lights above you turn on. Some of them flicker or just don't work but most manage to turn on. "Ok, ok, progress. Now if I'm lucky I'll be able to find some glasses in that storage room." Y

ou walk out into the hallway and now see the plates above the doors."Mess Hall", "Boiler Room", "Sleeping Area", "Storage", and "Control Room", the room with the cryo-pods did not have a plate above it. And finally down the long hallway was a very large circular door with a symbol of the earth.

As you open the door to the storage room, you're shocked to see that the room was larger than you initially thought, with it walls lined with shelves with crates atop them, it seems the area you explored before was only the left side of the storage room. Most of the labels of the crates have long faded but you can still make out some of them.

You look through the crates you assume to be where they put clothing in hope of finding some glasses. To your disbelief, there were no glasses in any of them. "Squinting it is then..." You move to explore the right side of the room. You find things such as tools, water purifiers, solar panels, walkie-talkies (batteries not included), and an assortment of lab equipment.

You grab a toolbox and throw some water purification tablets into it. You exit the storage room and enter the long hallway once more. The silence of the bunker is deafening. "Just me myself and I, huh? Haha..ah...perhaps I should look into contacting other bunkers.

Unlikely there are any survivors but a man can dream, right?" Increasing loneliness aside, you make your way back to the control room and think about what you should next. "I've got the power on, but I'm going to need to secure a food and water source soon..." You open the door to the control room and sit down on one of the chairs, planning your next immediate action.

You roll up to the control panel and give a command to the computer. "Computer attempt communication with all possible bunkers." The computer didn't respond for at least 5 minutes. "Satellites are inactive and are most likely no longer operational. Reattempting communication with radio-" You interrupt the monotone report in shock of what you've just heard "Excuse me but what? Those satellites should've been able to withstand hundreds, even thousands of years, that's just not possible...!" "Unless.." Your mouth felt suddenly incredibly dry as you let out a humorless chuckle.

"Haha..who am I kidding? They probably went haywire or something like that..." "But what if...?" You swallowed the little amount of saliva you had in an attempt to halt the growing lump in your throat, wishing with everything you had that you were just overthinking it. You looked up at the screen and asked in a voice no louder than a whisper. "...computer, approximately how long has it been since you were last activated...?" It had felt like an eternity for the computer to respond, your unease growing each second.

"It has been approximately 3.9 million years since the last time I have been activated."

Time slowed to a halt.

At first, your mind simply refused to process what it had just heard as if playing dumb for long enough the problem would go away.

"Three...point...9 million years..? Three.point.9 million years."
"..."
"threepointninemillionyearsthreepointninemillionyearsthreepointninemillionyearsthreepointninemillionyearsthreepointninemillionyearsthreepointninemillionyearsthreepointninemillionyearsthreepointninemillionyearsthreepointninemillionyears-"

You had always been a somewhat stoic person and a loner, and you always remember being able to keep your cool in stressful moments. But today: you felt that being tested to its absolute limit. The growing loneliness, the realization you would probably never feel another's touch, another's voice, the inexplicable feeling of not being to comprehend that you slept through, hundreds, thousands, millions of years past your lifespan in what felt like a day of rest, that knawing feeling that everything you've ever done amounted to nothing in the end. And finally, after all that, you snapped.

Your mind stopped playing back the computer's words, your mind stopping every thought, after what felt like your sanity being stretched out like taffy: you let out one gut-wrenching, extremely painful scream. Your face dripped with sweat, saliva, and tears as you gasped for air and gripped your face as you let a shuddered sigh escape your lips. You dropped back into the chair and gazed at the ceiling in despair. The ceiling opened up into a black abyss and you could feel it almost beckoning for you to lean in succumb to the sheer horror, the sheer insanity. You could feel yourself rocking back and forth on the ledge that separated sanity, from complete and utter madness.

...
>>
>>4171716
The sound of static filled the room momentarily after an hour of silence. Suddenly a cheerful pop song plays over the speakers of the large monitor. You slowly turn your head towards the source of the noise. Your voice coarse and rough you let out a small "what..?" You suddenly realized that this language sounded completely foreign to your ears.

You didn't even think vocal cords could even produce that sound. "...computer, wha-what is that?" The music cut out and the monotoned voiced computer gives you an explanation. "When I attempted to contact other bunkers through radio, I was met with this interference." All signs of despair left your face as you almost rejoiced thinking that perhaps you really weren't alone. "co-COfF-computer, tune into that again." The analytical side of you was simply fascinated by this music. Your mind flowed with questions. You were never all that interested in music, too preoccupied with work, but you knew enough about it that this sounded somewhat similar to the music genre "J-pop."

"But that's impossible, that sounds... not unlike Japanese, but sounds like someone had thrown Japanese, English, some other random bits of other languages and threw them into blender...fasinating...! This sounds eerily natural to be a voice changer, and the computer said it was interference: implying it did not come from a bunker, but from somewhere else. Was this a product of a completely new sapient species or a descendant of humans?!" You rolled the ideas in your head, almost giddy at this discovery, and you had to admit: the tune was pretty catchy and mood-lifting.

You sit straight up in your chair, fully intrigued of this seemingly new species. "Computer, is it possible for you to search and display OTA frequencies?" After a few seconds, the computer responds. "I can, would you like me too?" "Very much so." After a few minutes, the computer reports it's findings. "I have located 4 radio and 2 OTA frequencies, which would you like me to play first?" "The first OTA frequency, please."

The display is filled with static, you couldn't wait to see just what these creatures looked like. Slowly, the same language you heard from the music replaced the static noise. Image soon followed. Your eyes locked on to the screen.

A sickly purple-colored cartoon octopus attacked a bowl of cereal in its grasp, shoveling spoonfuls of cereal into its maw as its eyes pierced through your soul, it just kept eating the cereal with its sinister smile, increasing the speed at which at it ate. Splash text of an unknown language appeared on the screen as the octopus suddenly stopped eating, continuing to stare.

After a few more adverts played, (unfortunately none of them showed the creatures, at least you didn't think they did), you were starting to get impatient and irritable, and just as you were about to give the order to change the channel, a small tune played followed by pink, green and white forming a triangle around the text. "is this it...?! You lean towards the screen, almost falling off the chair in the process.

Your eyes almost pop out of your skull as you observe the pair of organisms top to bottom. Questions firing at a mile-a-minute "A-astonishing, truly astonishing, If I didn't know any better I'd say that's a human! Are those tentacles? They seem to serve as hair, do they still function as limbs or are they purely decoration? No fingernails, and what a strange teeth structure, are those breasts? Is this cephalopod-human hybrid of some sort of a completely separate species? I would say the former-but how would you even begin to cross the two vastly different species, and why?" You analyzed the hybrids(?) with fervor, not missing a single detail.

"I wish I could observe more in person, I need my glasses..." You leaned into the screen and studied the background a bit more, a noticed a blue blob bouncing up in down, waving its arms. You stood up in astonishment "There's more!?" Suddenly the two stood up, said something in a sing-song voice, and posed with one hand raised to their head and one below their waist.

"Yes, begin the process now." With two hours to spare you decide to look over the remaining rooms. The first room you decided to check out is the mess hall. The room had an eating area with tables and chairs folded up and resting on the side of the wall. There was a back room with large refrigerators containing nothing, a faucet that only put out cold water, an un-opened microwave still in its box, and some cooking supplies still in their packaging.

You moved on to the sleeping area second. The room was filled with bunk beds that reminded you of the ones you'd see on a ship. While they all had mattresses atop them, none had any covers or blankets. Last but not the boiler room. The room contained the running generator, a boiler, a broken water heater, and a half-empty water supply. The boiler was not running, explaining why the bunker was so cold. You observed the water heater, while you are no plumber, you're a top rate scientist and fixing something like this should be a cakewalk (...right?)

The room was separated into two sections, one for men and one for women. In the men's side were stalls lined up on the left side of the room, with sinks and mirrors on the right wall that separated the showers from the stalls.

There were ten showers on both sides of the shower area's walls "Soap and rags are probably in storage, whatever, this is fine for now." You strip and turn on the shower, relishing the hot water. "I knew to fix that water heater was a good idea..." You wash your hair and just think for a while, doing wonders for your sanity. After a good soak, you turn off the water and realize your fatal mistake. "...how am I going to dry off?"

...

After a few minutes, you finally dry off enough for you to put on your clothes. "Note to self, acquire towels from storage." You move into the hallway, the slightly cool air feeling good on your skin.

You stop dead in your tracks and turn to look at the door leading to the woman's side of the washroom. Childhood memories and rumors creep into your skull one by one the longer you look at the door."I heard they've got a vending machine!" "Yeah, well, I heard they've got a TV and an Xbox." "What? Where'd you hear that? They obviously got a playstation in there." "There's probably nothing in there..." "Shut up Carl! You're just too chicken to see for yourself so you're just trying to get us not to see it!" "N-no! It's just that it's statistically improbable for the girl's bathroom to be any dif-" "Yeah, yeah, yeah whatever you say chicken." You gulp and place a sweaty palm on the door's handle. "I'm just seeing if there are any glasses in there that's all..." You reassure yourself, and like ripping off a band-aid, you open the door and step into mystical land known as the girl's bathroom!

It was identical.

What'd you expect?

"Well, that was disappointing." You search the bathroom, but to your dismay, you find no glasses. You return to the control room. "Computer has the translation been completed?" "Yes, but I was unable to get any meaningful data. If I record a larger portion of audio I could perhaps get better results, but it would take an extended period of time." "How much time we talking here?" "Approximately 24 hours, would you like to begin the process once again?"

Are there any external camera feeds, so we can get an idea of where this bunker is located? If there's no food in here, we Will have to scout out our surrounding area. That said, since we know there are intelligent creatures here that we don't know the language of, we should try to draw out a basic message. Stuff like the bunker's location relative to any nearby landmarks, stuff we did for work/tools we used, and most importantly a "frowny face without glasses plus glasses equals smiley face with glasses". That said, make sure the coast is clear before we explore anywhere, and get done with that basic message before we go anywhere. If we have enough food to hunker down for a bit, staying put over the duration should be fine.
>>
>>4179904
There are no camera's, you're gonna need to go out yourself.

I'm going to give it to you guys straight, I haven't really thought much about your current surroundings, so I'm gonna take this time to plan it out some more. I'll start the session early at 3 pm est. Sorry for all these delays and setbacks, and I know said I'd make it up today, but I'd rather plan this out than give another lackluster update.
>>
>>4180116
sounds good
>>
>>4180056
Yeah, that's the general idea, but it's contingent upon how long it takes to draw out those simple messages, the current time of day, and where this facility would be located relative to other stuff. Like, if we're in the middle of some wilderness area, we're going to need to get a bead on our surroundings. We could also be in some weird deserted city or something (or even in the middle of a populated one). Our guy's smart and has access to a computer, so I'm pretty confident that we wouldn't do anything stupid like eat unidentified plants or animals. Food acquisition may be a problem, but we just don't know yet.

Also since we're smart, we can assume a number of things about these squid people based on just knowing that they have a language, music, and broadcast media:
>they're not necessarily overtly hostile
>they have some sort of shared culture
>they're intelligent, and capable of rational thought
>members of their race are capable of creating (or at least utilizing) technology

The snags with them are:
>we don't know how they'll react to us
>we don't know where they are
>we don't know where WE are
>we can't understand what they're saying (yet)
>they can't understand us
>we don't know if they're inherently hostile or not (although if we saw a Turf War we could probably tell that their idea of play is just hitting each other with water guns)

So they should be able to at least understand pictograms since we can't really talk to them yet. Not that that's really a problem since graffiti is super huge with them, it's just kind of inconvenient if there's no easy way to depict what we need before we can find a way to effectively communicate.

Also, once we get a translation up we should absolutely see if we can broadcast some sort of radio wave ping if we're in the middle of nowhere.

"Yes, begin it now." "Affirmative, starting the process now..." A loading bar appears on the screen, one out of one hundred. You stand and crack your knuckles. "Now, time to get to work. I'm going to need a basic way of communicating with the species, for the time being, pictures should work just fine. Beside that, I need to get an idea of what my current surroundings are, which means going outside. I'm probably going to need a disguise if I meet any of them..."

You make your way to the storage room, thinking aloud to yourself. You dig through storage to find a notebook and a pen. "This should work." With your toolbox and notebook in hand, you move to the large circular door down the long hallway. You place your hand on the sensor beside it, and with groaning and a click, the door opens to reveal the outside world.

A vast night sky dotted with pinpricks of light, a lush forest full of pine, and a road that stretched far beyond. You took a second to take in the fresh air."Much better than that stuffy bunker. The terrain seems to have changed quite a bit, I could have sworn the bunker was located in a plain." You pull out your notebook and make note of your surroundings, well, the ones you could actually see. Although the moon and the stars provide ample amounts of light, it's still pretty dark, and with your nearsighted vision, you were going to have to wait until morning to see more.

You huffed in annoyance. "This is idiocy of the highest caliber, I know I wasn't the only one amongst my colleagues that wore glasses, so why didn't they prepare any in storage!?"

"A midnight stroll does sound pretty tempting, and I won't get lost if I just follow the road for now." You walk onto the road, taking in the moon and the fresh air, and you hum the tune of the song you heard on the radio aloud. Your stroll goes on like this for a few minutes, before you notice something peculiar. You spot a light in the forest, and the harder you squint, you believe you see the outline of a house!

Despite your attempts to make as little noise as possible when approaching the house, leaves crunch and twigs snap as you make your way towards it. Although you're not the most physically fit you still manage to scramble up a tree a few feet away from the house. You hug the trunk of the tree while you sit awkwardly on a branch. You lean towards the light and squint.

You make out some curtains, but it appears they are open just a crack, letting the light escape from inside the home. There are two floors, with the downstairs window being the one with the light coming from it. You don't really hear anything from the house. "Should I attempt contact? But who knows how they'll react to me, perhaps I should just wait until I have a disguise..." You ponder, planning your next move

Best not to creep up at night, as well as wait for that translation. At least we know that someone lives nearby, so that gives us something to work with. Let's wait til morning before we meet with anybody.

I don't think a disguise is necessary: we'd flub it without knowing more about who we're emulating.

You wrap your arms and legs around the trunk and slide down, you stumble slightly as you plant your feet on the ground, causing you to almost fall flat on your face. Your arms spin like propellers, attempting to regain your lost balance. You let out a weary sigh and take a moment to determine the direction in which you came from. Your return to the bunker involved lots of waving your arms and squinting so forcefully you got a headache, you couldn't be happier once you saw the large bunker door covered with loose dirt and leaves. You get down on your knees and slap your palm onto the sensor, and after a moment of groaning and clicks, you descended into the earth. "Well, that was...tiring, to say the least." You move to the control room and plop yourself onto the cushioned swivel chair.
