/qst/ - Quests

On the brink of war, the planet EXCARGA braces for destruction! The people of the capital city, ZOGOTO, begin an evacuation to clear the way for a titanic clash between Republic and Separatist forces. The Jedi and Clone Commanders have ordered their troops to prepare for the coming onslaught but none know the true scale of the DROID THREAT.

You are SERGEANT CT-0027. Leading a squad of your brothers on the frontline, you’ve already survived a crash landing in the forested marshlands and taken a Separatist officer prisoner since coming planetside. The CLANKERS have deployed a new and ferocious droid series that you’ve encountered. You did your best to prepare your troopers and others to face them, but only time will tell if it’s enough. For now you can only wait and watch for the Confederacy’s forces as they draw near….

EPISODE 6

The trees in front of you are standing still and the tall grasses and overgrown shrubs obscuring the forest floor are motionless as well. There’s not even wind to move the branches and boughs from side to side. The only noise you can hear is the sound of the vehicles moving farther back behind your position, a Republic convoy of artillery and support personnel freshly dropped off at the Spaceport. They’re moving south toward the city on the main road and your squad is a part of the thin line screening them from any potential surprise assaults.

Separated by a few dozen yards, you’ve broken your squads into pairs to keep watch along this critical sector. It’s halfway between the dug-in troops of Lieutenant Falx’s platoon further down the road and the waiting force of tanks and Clones waiting in reserve at the Spaceport. If the droids were smart, you think to yourself, they would hit here first and hardest. If they were clever they would get as close as possible before revealing themselves. From everything you’ve seen so far just today, you had every reason to think the Separatists knew exactly what they were doing. The shootdown of your LAAT had taken you by surprise and they could have easily threatened everything afterward had your squad and you not stopped them. Now it was up to you all again to warn your brothers of any potential danger.

You keep your breaths quiet and controlled, straining your eyes and ears to keep focused on any sign of the enemy in front of you. To your right your vode, 2337 is doing the same. The hastily dug foxhole the two of you have managed to make isn’t ideal, but it’s the best you could do on short notice. The ground is so wet there’s a puddle up to your ankles at the bottom and every once in a while you’re forced to move your feet, keeping them from being sucked too far down into the muck. The squelching and sloshing sound may as well be an alarm bell in your mind, but you know it won’t travel far in this terrain.

Taking a hand of your blaster, you check the flare on your equipment belt. Captain Alfonse had equipped each team of your squad with them to signal the other troops if you made contact with the enemy...

>Check your comms with your teams, make sure they’re all in position.

You raise your hand up to your helmet, carefully placing it over the side covering your ear. Activating the integrated comlink, you go hot twice, two bursts of open air hitting the circuit your squad is using. There’s a short delay, before you hear two similar open mics come across in response. That was Harm and Beast, the missile launcher wielding Clone and assault trooper out to your immediate right. You had put your heaviest weapon on the near flank, just in case the droids popped out a little further past you. A few seconds later, you hear another two bursts of activity, the signal belonging to Grizzly and Wasp. You had put the troublesome duo of engineers on your left. It was partly to keep the EMP launcher Grizzly was carrying close to the middle to support either flank, but it was also partly to keep them close to you and not alone on a flank. You had guessed that the best place for them as anywhere.

There was no doubting their ability to fight. The two of them had survived Geonosis when many of their brothers had not. They had also managed to take down one of those dangerous new droids the Confederacy had deployed. What bothered you was how they had done it and how it had cost 5536 so much pain. It was just another example of how they put each other over the rest of the squad. That bothered you. The fact you couldn’t implicitly trust two brothers for anything bothered you. Mere moments away from facing a droid attack, they should have been the last thing you felt uncertain about.

It’s around then you realize you’ve been thinking too long about them without interruption. The seconds have passed in silence, with the comm burst from Guile and 4582. You had placed them on the far right flank, passed Grizzly and Wasp. Guile’s sniper rifle and marksmanship was the next best thing to a missile launcher and watching the other flank would be right within his abilities. Especially with 4582 next to him, you had no doubt they could hold it themselves. Their silence right now is deafening though and you start to grow a little more concerned. Without any noise or sound of a scuffle, it was unlikely they had been taken out. It was probably just comm trouble, you think to yourself, just the same as it had been since landing. The combination of tall trees, soft ground, and Separtist droids wreaking havoc. It’s why you couldn’t radio for help when you crashed or why Bones’ platoon couldn’t be contacted or called back. Still, you had to confirm they were okay…

>Break radio silence, try to get word of them from the rest.

>Let 2337 hold here while you check down the line.

There was no sense going through all the trouble to keep quiet and then blow the radio silence at the first troublespot, you think decisively. The best way would be to go check on them directly and at any rate it was a good chance to patrol the ground between all of you. Ideally, you would have had a fifth pair tasked with going between the positions. Losing the troopers from before and having too much ground to cover meant you just had to make do. Clicking three times on the comm, you give the acknowledged signal for those who can hear you. Then, patting 2337 on the shoulder, you get your brother’s attention just long enough to signal him to stay put. He nods quietly, before returning to scanning the firing lane forward.

You press your carbine into the ground beside the hole and lift yourself out, the fresh mud on your lower body layering over the older muck and grime from before. Careful to keep crouched, you start moving immediately, wasting no time to head to cover. 2337 was scanning for any threats, you knew, so looking yourself would just leave you exposed for longer. You make for a large tree nearby to your left and take cover behind the trunk, giving a few seconds before proceeding quickly and quietly to the next tree. Repeating the process twice more, sparing only a moment or two to check for clankers or flashes before proceeding, it’s not long before you’re closing in on Wasp and Grizzly’s position.

Indeed, you think to yourself, it’s time to start being careful. You didn’t need a friendly fire accident now. Knocking twice at each tree, you give a clear enough signal to hopefully cue them in to your approach. They manage to see you first, thanks to your signals. As you come to the last tree before their position, you see Grizzly with his EMP launcher trained in your direction while Wasp covers the front. The two engineers were lucky enough to have found a fallen lod to dig in behind. Although it looked to be rotting slightly, it was still solid enough to give them slightly more cover than 2337 and you had.

Grizzly hesitates for a moment, before nodding at you slowly. Not needing to particularly check on them, you wave for him to resume, allowing both of them to cover you. With a deep breath, you skip right past them and sprint behind their position to the next bit of concealment, a large bush with thick foliage. You wait for Wasp to look your direction, signalling him that you’re moving on before continuing on your way.

Guile and 4582 were not far, but you notice that the forest gets a little more dense here. You slow down slightly, the distance between trees not quite as far and the vision more limited. It was more important to be quiet here than anything else. You’re carefully working your way through to your brother's position when…

You hear something…

>Deeper into the forest.
>Above you.

>Deeper into the forest.

A rustle. A step. A noise from a distance you can’t immediately judge.

At once your body reacts, throwing yourself quickly behind cover. Your blaster rises and you take it in both hands, ready to fire in an instant. There’s little thought in your mind as to what else it could be besides an enemy. Without any trace of local wildlife since you had arrived and with every reason to be expecting the droids to come pouring from the trees any moment, the first place your head goes to is to call out contact. You know, however, that it could still yet be something or someone else. There was still Bones and the rest of the platoon to account for as well as the pilots and crew you had crashed with. While your mind can easily picture yourself firing either your blaster of the flare, your training tells you it’s too soon. You must be certain.

You count off a few seconds in your head, allowing for any other sounds to come out from the trees beyond. Sure enough, the sound repeats itself. Perhaps it had been the suddenness of the first sound that had set the alarms in your head blaring, but hearing the follow up you’re now largely certain it’s some distance off. Not quite straight into the depths of the trees but also not so close as to be on your path, your instinct is to assume you were on course to making a “T” with whatever its cause is.

It’s likely, at least, that your brothers could also hear the noise and the disturbance in the woods. The two of them were probably as trained upon the sound as Wasp and Grizzly had been when you came up upon them. The danger now would be potentially distracting them. They, so far, had no way of knowing you were yet coming. However, your close proximity would surely give a better chance of your comlink reaching them now. It went back to the same problem though, you didn’t want to break radio silence with the enemy potentially so close. Now the feeling was compounded by not wanting to distract your brothers for even a moment. You certainly couldn’t wait here though, you recognize, A’den had trained you better than that.

You couldn’t advance into the woods. That would potentially put you into the firing lanes of your team. Approaching from the side seemed the most direct route, but would also have its downside. There was the potential that it would force one or even both your brothers to turn from the front. The other option that comes to mind is to swing around from behind. Approaching from that angle, although perhaps surprising, was the safest way to keep from any blaster fire whether from them or the enemy. So long as you’re careful and announce your presence discreetly but noticeably, it would potentially be better if slower…

>Approach their position from the side, distracting them for a moment won’t hurt.
>Take the slower option and come up from behind. They need to be focused.

>Take the slower option and come up from behind. They need to be focused.

You swing around, diverting from course to first get closer to the road before continuing further on course down the line. The lost time was fairly negligible and it was more important not to make your brothers convinced they were being flanked.

It’s odd, but as you continue you notice the trees here seem much younger than ones toward your position had been. They’re much smaller here, providing much less cover. Instead, the grasses and brush here are much thicker, an almost completely different environment even just meters from where you had been with Wasp and Grizzly. Perhaps Guile and 4582 had set up elsewh--

The profile of a blast rifle pointed straight at you is unmistakable. There’s a blur of white armor as, rising from the ground, a very familiar Clone has you directly under his targeting sights. Beside him, prone on the ground, another familiar Clone lies in wait, blaster aimed in the opposite way. Most of their armor is camouflaged by various grasses and shades of mud, obviously dealing with their lack of proper cover with concealment.

You let out a sigh of relief, dropping your carbine and raising a hand to signal him. 4582 looks surprised to see you, his own blaster lowering. He’s about to ask what you’re doing, so you quickly motion for silence. He holds any noise but still seems to want an answer. You watch as he puts a hand on Guile’s back, letting him know there’s nothing to worry about and to keep watching the front. Not that he needs to be told, you note, he had barely reacted at all as far as you can see. You tap the side of your helmet, right over your ear, to let him know there’s comlink trouble. That would hopefully be enough to explain your presence.

4582 nods, acknowledging your signal. It’s then that you hear the unmistakable sound of movement in the bushes beyond their position. Your brother immediately drops back into position, his blaster rifle pointed down the firing lane in front of them. Guile still has yet to move an inch, his sniper rifle as unmoving as a statue and his breathing slow enough that you’re almost certain he’s stopped entirely.

The rustling overgrowth shakes noticeably to the fore of them. It’s clear that whatever is out there is likely about to appear or wants you to be focused entirely on it. Shouldering your carbine, you’re careful to check to the left and right, just in case it’s some kind of diversion meant to keep your eyes all glued in one direction. Your training kicks in and you crouch down to take a knee, minimizing your profile.

As the figure comes into view, you’re shocked to see it’s a Clone!

>He’s one of the pilots from your crash landing! He looks disoriented.
>His armor is plain, but for a terrible looking blaster wound he’s clutching at.

>He’s one of the pilots from your crash landing! He looks disoriented.

There’s no mistaking it, the Clone in front of you is no other than one of the pilots who had brought you down from the ship in orbit. Even without checking his designation, the markings on his helmet are more than enough to identify him to you. He and the rest of the aircrew had separated with your squad after the crash. Your brothers and you had gone after the Separatists who had shot you down, while they had left to evacuate their severely wounded gunner. You had made the call to let them go their own way, but when you arrived at the spaceport after the fight and escape you had found out there had been no sign or word of them.

He’s walking irregularly, almost as though he’s not seeing straight or is having trouble with the ground below him. He stumbles suddenly and reaches outward, grabbing one of the small trees near him to stop from falling over. There’s something wrong with him…

“Brother!” 4582 calls, rising up from his cover, “What’s happened? Are you alright?”

You’re concerned, but there’s something odd about what was happening. The trooper falls down to his knees, slumping over to the ground. There’s a wet thump as he collapses into a heap, no obvious wounds upon him…

4582 clambers from his foxhole, rushing over almost immediately.

“45-” Guile starts to say, looking up from his rifle.

You're about to shout as well when the blaster bolts open up, tearing through the overgrowth.

Dropping as fast as you can, you fall prone to avoid the deadly onslaught. The grass around you is too tall to get a clear view as you keep low, but you can hear the shouting of your brothers up ahead.

“Contact!” comes the closest shouting, that had to be Guile, “45?! 45 launch the flare!”

There’s no immediate reply that you can hear over the blasters, the bolts zipping just over your head and burying into the brush around you. It’s heavy and repeating, you realize, either there was an entire squad opening up with everything at once or a very heavy weapon was in the fight. Whichever the case, there’s no doubt in your mind this was the enemy. You roll over onto your back and reach down for the flare on your belt. With one swift movement, you reach down and point it toward the sky, firing the bright red flare into air.

“Contact, left flank!” you shout over the comlink a heartbeat later. Shouting as loud as you can, you try to get your brother’s attention.

“Guile, I’m behind you, report!”

“I can’t see them,” the sniper shouts back, “4582, where are you?!”

The moment is critical, this kind of sustained fire could only mean one thing…

>They’re keeping you pinned so they can flank you, the two of you need to watch each side.
>Their ambush wasn’t clean and now they’re trying to finish it. A detonator will make them pay for over committing.

>They’re keeping you pinned so they can flank you, the two of you need to watch each side.

“Watch for incoming!” you yell again, getting Guile’s attention back, “You take left, I’ll take right!”

You’re not able to see him acknowledge, the grass still obscuring your view from your prone position, but you hear your brother shout back in acknowledgement. You let the spent flare fall to the ground as you gather your carbine and take aim to watch your sector. It wouldn’t take long for the rest of the squad to hear the firefight, you knew.

For now, you still don’t have any clear views of where the blaster bolts are going from. The problem compounds when you realize that the fire overhead is not letting up at all, reinforcing your impression that it was just meant to keep your head down. There weren’t many droids or weapons that could keep that kind of fire up. You begin to wonder if it might be a Destroyer droid or two laying down the ferocious storm.

The thought is cut short when, at last, you catch sight of a droid moving through the brush to your right. With its blaster raised, the battle droid has clearly been ordered to try and flank Guile’s position. Luckily, being further behind him, you’re in the perfect spot to blast the droid to scrap, followed quickly by scrapping a second that follows immediately in its wake. As difficult as your location is, it’s at least in the right place to keep the pressure off Guile’s back. On cue, you hear his sniper rifle begin to bark. It’s not the rhythm you’re used to hearing though, it’s clear he’s being forced to fire a bit more quickly than usual. The droids must have timed this damn near perfectly to overrun them from both sides. That was the kind of sophistication and planning you were worried about.

Another battle droid walks into your sight and you dispatch it just the same as the first two. There could be just a squad to deal with or even a full battalion, you realize. With no way to see or know their full numbers, all you seemed capable of doing for now was blasting the ones that popped their long heads out from the trees. That wasn't sustainable, you knew very well. If it was anything like the Aid Station on Geonosis had been, the wave could be unending and unrelenting.

You would just have to find a way to break the chain or to fall back out of the trap. For now, however, you needed a little luck to catch a break in the firing to get to a better position and to see what’s happened to 4582 and the pilot. Sending another burst from your carbine at a flash of metal among the trees, you try to decide on a course of action to get some breathing room…

>Grizzly and Wasp would be able to hold the flank if they came your way, freeing you to fight your way forward.

>The droids aren’t the only ones who can hide. Dive into the brush and engage them in close quarters.

Whether the droids were attacking in narrow columns or along a wider front you had know way to know, but in either case it was advantageous to keep your brothers in place. If it was a single column of droids, you had a chance to hold them off for a short while. Whereas, if they were attacking wide, the rest of your squad would soon have their own troubles to worry about. It was going to depend on you to see the droids knocked back to give you all some breathing room to operate.

“Guile!” you shout aloud, “Covering fire!”

There’s no verbal response, but you hear his long-barreled blaster start firing far too quickly to be precisely aimed. It’s all the signal you need to take your chance. Jumping to your feet, you lunge into the brush nearby and make your way forward to where the droids had started appealing on your flank. Your carbine soon finds a target as you scrap a B1 that blunders directly into your path. A moment later you’ve pulled your beskad from your belt, swinging the blade heavily into the head of another. The droid topples, blaster firing wildly as its headless body flails and crashes downward.

In a way, your attack reminds you of your near-fatal charge in the trenches of Geonosis. You had dove head first into a column of droids, trying to stall their attack long enough for the other Clones to pull out, and had been overwhelmed, pulled down by sheer weight of numbers. Had Bones not been there to pull you out, you very likely would have either died by droid hands or the explosion you rigged to go off throughout the trench network. You feel a cold shiver down your spine. You’re not certain if it’s caused by remembering the vision of your death or the thought of Bones still being out there, needing your help. You thrust the Mandalorian blade into the chest of another droid as you turn from behind a small tree, steadily pushing your way forward through the scrub.

This wasn’t like how Geonosis was. You had advantages here, plenty of cover and you’ve adapted enough to the soggy ground to still move well, while the regular droids seemed to have some trouble still. Those facts alone would be good enough but you had changed as well, you knew. Your technique with Wrax’s beskad has improved markedly. Firing your carbine with one hand while slashing the snarling mythosaur-headed plade around is starting to feel not only natural, but precise. It’s easy to get lost in the movements…

It strikes you that you’ve managed to smash and blast your way several meters in front of your brother’s line. You had to be careful or you might end up getting hit by friendly fire…

>Use your detonator to cap off the assault and then fall back. You’ve bought time enough.

Ducking behind one of the few trees large enough to properly cover you entirely, you quickly return the beskad to your belt. You draw the detonator next to it and quickly prime a short detonation sequence with your thumb. Glancing around and over your shoulder, you let a few seconds pass, just enough for a droid to pop out from the brush. It greets you with a volley of blaster fire, making you pull back as shards of bark and explode outward, but it’s already doomed any droids behind it.

You adjust the detonator in your hand and lean out on the opposite side of the tree, lobbing the explosive just above the droid’s head and into the scrub immediately behind it. The B1 pays little attention to it, focusing instead on shifting its fire after you. With a deft turn on your foot, you come back around again to the other side of the tree and blast the droid, carbine rising and shooting as soon as you catch its center of mass. The ill-fated battle droid doesn’t even have the time to fall when the blast behind it goes off, the miniature sphere of destruction growing behind it and ripping apart the forest in a powerful explosion. Combined in the timber of the blast, you’re entirely positive you hear the high-pitched shouting of at least a few more droids. Your confidence buoys, certain that you’ve set the droids back enough to get your brothers pulled back to a more defensible position.

The moment after the detonator goes off, you’re already moving back toward Guile and 4582’s position. Closing the distance takes only a few more seconds, but you know you probably won’t have more than a handful more before the droids recover and continue their assault. Reaching the clearing where they had taken position, you quickly spot the two of them starting to fall back. Guile continues to lay down cover fire as fast as he can into the brush, while 4582 is now dragging the pilot by the back of his armor through the tall grass. His blaster rifle too big for him to properly fire with one hand, 4582 focuses entirely on getting the downed brother out. You can tell that Guile is struggling to keep them covered, however, the sniper rifle and his equipment are not optimal for the current environment. A short pair of blasts from your carbine is enough to help him turn the tide, however, just in the knick of time.

You signal immediately for him to start pulling back with 4582 as well, but you recognize that now was as good a time as any to break the radio silence.

“All units,” you command over the comm quickly, “Fall back to the road. Droids on the left, potentially more incoming.”

A pair of acknowledgements comes over at once, as Wasp and 2337 sound off quickly, but you immediately realize you don’t hear anything from the Harm and Beast. The comm range issue was likely the same as before...

“2337,” you add quickly, “Head to the south position and pull them out.”

“On it, Double Oh!” your vod replies without question.

While you’re somewhat worried, the droids could very well have another column about to hit them, the confidence in your brothers’ voices is a good reminder of how prepared they were. This was what you had all been training for and there was no squad that was as well trained as yours.

Just as 4582 manages to drag the Clone pilot from view, Guile pulls up and turns, providing fresh cover fire for you to start your own retreat. The two of you repeat the pattern in reverse and then alternate, taking turns holding back any encroaching droids just long enough for 4582 to keep ahead of them. Your ear catches the sound of blasters out to your left, possibly Wasp and Grizzly having their own troubles. Fortunately, the loud thumping of Grizzly’s EMP launcher causes the blaster fire to die off after every shot, which reassures you again that they’re in control. Your squad, at least the half you could see or hear, was performing admirably.

When Guile, 4582, the pilot, and you reach the edge of the forest, you quickly look down each direction of the road for any sign of other Clones. The section of the convoy you had heard earlier seems to have already passed, a distant cloud in the south direction toward town your only sign of them. You tell your brothers to take cover on the opposite side of the paved section, the far side embankment forming a natural ditch or gutter for rain runoff. You’re mindful that there could still be another droid presence coming in from that side, but without any evidence you quickly decide to trust that the scout company was doing their job in that direction.

You drop beside 4582 as he finishes pulling the pilot into the ditch. He joins Guile in covering the treeline as you a first aid check.

“Did he say anything?” you question 4582, your brother scanning for any movement in the trees where you just came out.

“Negative,” comes a short reply, “I think he passed out!”

You’re inclined to agree, the pilot's pulse is dangerously weak and he’s not responding to anything as you check him over.

“Movement!” Guile calls, “To the right!”

Yous top mid-procedure and throw your carbine up, pointed in the direction Guile is indicating. You let out a sigh of relief when you see the familiar wnite and yellow armor of your engineers, Grizzly and Wasp charging out and heading for the ditch just like you had. A few seconds later, even further down, you see another trio of clones, likely 2337, Beast, and Harm, failing back as a team. Blaster fire can clearly be seen shooting out after them and you more and more suspect a large front push by the droids...

>Hold here and order your brothers to move down to you, then fall back toward the spaceport.

>Start heading down the ditch, collecting your brothers and moving toward Falx’s position further down.

It’s a lot of ground to cover to get to safety in either direction, but the situation didn’t exactly have an easy answer for your squad. When you had fired off your flare, you think to yourself, it was likely the convoy of artillery vehicles and personnel split. The part passed it continued on to the city and anything else probably retreated quickly back to the safety of the Spaceport. Roughly, that meant your position was in a difficult place with few options.

Ordering 4582 to grab the pilot again, you send him south down the ditch toward Wasp and Grizzly. With no obvious wounds and his breathing and pulse present, if faint, there’s little you’ll be able to do for the unconscious Clone until you reach somewhere safer. Instead the best action you can do for him is joining Guile in providing covering fire while your brother takes him away. This effectively commits you to falling back toward Falx, you acknowledge to yourself, taking you away from the advantages of going north. The Spaceport was certainly the more well defended location and the coming armor company would probably be able to take the fight to the Separatist sooner. However, going south meant that you would be able to give the rear of the artillery convoy a bit more protection, so long as you kept ahead of the droids. Falx’s position would probably benefit more from an additional squad as well.

The droids are starting to boldly, or mindlessly you suppose, leave the tree line. Flooding into out toward the other side of the road, you make out a half dozen, and then a dozen, and then a score in short order coming into view further to the north of your location. As your small group reaches Wasp and Grizzly, you finally have enough free hands and weapons to start properly falling back in pairs.

“Focus fire on any droids across from us or crossing the road,” you order quickly, keenly aware of what would happen if they got on the same side of you with a clear firing lane down the ditch.

Progress is somewhat slow, until you finally reach 2337 and the rest. The medic moves directly to start helping 4582 transport the pilot, while Beast and Harm join the fire, lancing out at the encroaching droids with their carbine and missile launcher respectively . You’re starting to feel more confident when you realize the droids much farther down were now out of your effective range. They would be able to cross the road unmolested. That meant that they might be able to roll up on you if any of the faster droids appeared…

>Order your squad into the forest on your side. It will be slower, but you’ll have more cover if the droids close in.
>Keep close to the road. It’s risky, but there’s too great a chance the droids are in these trees as well. You need speed.

>Keep close to the road. It’s risky, but there’s too great a chance the droids are in these trees as well. You need speed.

You didn’t have the numbers to run a proper security team to give you any warning of another droid force in the trees while taking care of wounded and holding the Separatists already bearing down. The key to this situation was speed, you knew, and removing yourself from the area as fast as possible. The ground beside the road is the best you’ve seen on the entire planet so far and you intend to use it for all it’s worth. That seems to suit your squad just fine, the increased sight lines allow not only Guile’s sniper rifle a proper range to operate at, but the other heavy weapons in the squad to shine.

As you pass each team while leapfrogging each other, you make certain to remind them to be careful of their munition levels. Falling back on Falx’s position meant that you weren’t likely going to be able to restock the more exoctic pieces of equipment, like the EMP launcher or the Plex. In fact, you caution Harm specifically to save his missiles in case any Separatist vehicles start making appearances. If the droids had an AAT around here, they most certainly could manage just about anything else.

Almost to punctuate your words, you start hearing the sound of vehicles coming from the trees on the other side of the road. Scanning the treetops, you indeed see a number larger of the taller trees either swaying violently or being toppled completely. That wasn’t good. The Separatists were likely moving heavy equipment in. If their target had been the convoy, they likely had the firepower to cause a large amount of damage quickly and certainly more than enough to make short work of your own squad. You encourage the squad to move even faster, the time your teams spend to cover now barely a handful of seconds before they shuttle back.

You’re still putting distance between yourselves and the droids you can see, and that was good you knew, but if a tank or walker appeared about now you would be in quite some trouble. Pushing the thought aside for the moment, you decide to press your luck on the comlink. Getting a signal out would be your best bet of making sure everything was proceeding in a way that had been expected.

“This is Sergeant CT-0027,” you open the report, “Separatist forces are cutting the road. Battle Droids with suspected heavy vehicle backup. I repeat, they are cutting the road. Any units, do you copy?”

There’s a ball of static over the air and no answer seems forthcoming until…

“We hear you, Sergeant,” a faint voice responds, “This is Gold flight, need some fire support?”

>Give them the coordinates for where you guess the vehicles are. The tanks will have an easier time clearing the road.

“Affirmative,” you answer quickly, “Two clicks north of center, eastern side of the road...”

You risk exposing yourself for a moment to climb higher in the ditch, straining your neck looking to make an estimate on how far off the vehicles were based on the swaying of the trees.

“Fifty meters past the treeline heading west, enemy vehicles of unknown make,” you continue at last, blaster bolts passing dangerously close to you, “Battle droid support nearby, potential anti-air.”

“Confirmed, Sergeant,” the voice breaks through the static again, “Inbound in thirty seconds, standby.”

That was probably just a procedural response, you think to yourself, with more and more droids coming out of the trees you had no intention of standing by here. Dropping back lower in the ditch, you take yourself out of the line of fire for a moment before ordering your brothers to continue. You still had a fair way to go to get to Falx’s troops and you had a feeling that a single strike would not be enough to halt the enemy attack.

Around twenty seconds after hearing the pilot’s estimate, you look up to the sky, searching for any Republic craft moving in from above. There’s no sign for the moment, the tall trees on either side of you conspiring to prevent a good view except in the directions up and down the road. It’s then that you hear the distinctive sound of accelerating Rothana engines skimming in low.

“Brace!’ you shout out loud to your brothers.

A number of bright flashes trailing smoke streak above your squad’s heads and bury themselves deep into the trees on the far side of the road. Pillars of fire and explosive force reaching upward from the forest, the dark smoke and debris torn apart by the Mass-Driver missiles sent rising high. A heartbeat later three armored bellies pass overhead, a trio of LAAT/i’s flying in formation mere meters above the tops of the trees. A few of the squad let out a cheer as they fly by, but those with piloting experience like yourself hold your breath, those pilots weren’t clear yet.

Indeed, the ground fire that comes up at them is as fierce as an angry Geonosian hive. Blaster bolts of all calibers pepper and explode around the gunships, an unlucky hit catches one of the LAATs right in the port engine nacelle. The wounded bird starts to smoke heavily and tries to struggle on, but it explodes in a shattering display and crashes to the ground.

“Vehicles engaged,” Gold Leader’s voice comes shouting over the com net, “We’ve got hits, but can’t confirm. Too dangerous to stick around.”

The LAAT flight was clearly leaving, you only have a few more seconds of contact…

>Try to pass a message on the forces counterattacking. The situation from the road.

“Relay a message for us,” you speak quickly over the comlink, “To the forces coming down from the spaceport, let them know it’s mostly battle droids here. Separatists are coming from the east, no sign of them to the west!”

“Will do, Se-,” the pilot struggles to get through, “Returning to-- I don’t see…”

The static overwhelms the line, cutting off any contact with what’s left of Gold flight. You’ve lost sight of them as well, the gunships disappearing in the distance. The droids seem to have been slowed down by their attack, the smoke rising from the trees growing while the number of droids visible seems to have decreased rapidly. It was possible they were covering in case of another attack, you think to yourself, and that more than worked to your advantage. You’d all be able to make some quick progress afterall.

“On the double,” you command your brothers, the rest of the squad still picking themselves up after covering from the explosions, “This road is going to be clanking soon and we don’t want to be down range when the tanks start hitting.”

“How far off are we, Double-Oh?” 2337 shouts back from the front, “He’s in a bad way. We’ll need to check him soon!”

The wounded Clone with you still hadn’t been seen too yet, beyond your cursory inspection. There was no helping it for the moment however, this respite wasn’t going to last long.

“If we hurry, no more than ten minutes,” you reply, looking quickly at the others to get their statuses. Everyone seems to be intact, but you notice Grizzly has his EMP launcher slung back and his blaster pistol drawn.

“Out of ammo?” you ask directly.

“Just a few shots left,” he answers, “Figured I’d save it for something important.”

Stopping the rest of the squad from being shot in a ditch was certainly important, but you had to admit the battle droids you had seen didn’t especially need the heavy weaponry.

“Make sure it’s ready,” you say, your words heavy with caution…

>”It’s been too easy so far.”

As exciting as being on the front of a droid attack was, you couldn’t escape the feeling that you’d yet to really be challenged. The initial contact had been a rush, but you had been expecting that. If anything, you were probably more pleased than anything to have guessed their likely attack point. The wounded pilot with you had been the real surprise there. The vehicles had seemed a danger, but the timely intervention of air support appears to have pushed that threat back for the moment as well. Perhaps most concerning was the lack of anything… special, otherwise.

As the squad starts to move out again, your mind lingers on that thought. The droids were attacking much as they always had, in a steady wave with little creativity. They hadn’t even used any of those new droids to lead their assault, infiltrating ahead or even trying to knock out any of your teams. Maybe they just didn’t have enough of them, you think? It was hard to imagine the Separatists not having a million copies of any of their droids. That you had only faced a handful today and in a place they probably weren’t expecting didn’t support the notion either. It was unlikely for droids as capable as that to simply be guards of a low-ranking officer or squad of spider droids.

The more likely answer was that they were already engaged elsewhere.

Now that was a chilling thought, you consider. With more and more distance being put in between you and the droids behind, a thousand thoughts start to swirl in your head. Captain Alfonse had seemed so certain that something was different. A new strategy was in play, he had said specifically. This felt old though. Even if it was only your third real battle, the script here was looking identical to the others. The droids attack with overwhelming numbers, breakthrough, try to encircle and destroy pockets of resistance, and then repeat. What was the new strategy here?

You had only really been flash trained on the basic tactics involving squad and platoon level maneuvers. The rest of your experience was limited to the small scale for the most part. You would need more info, that was certain, and hopefully Lieutenant Falx would have more when your squad linked up to hi-

“Contact!” a shout comes from ahead of you.

Snapping out of your thoughts, you see movement up ahead.

>There’s a lot of movement on the opposite side of the road, the entire treeline!

It seems that your moment of respite was already quickly fading, you think to yourself. All along the trees there’s the rustling of branches and cracking of twigs underneath marching feet. Even in the soft dirt of this marshy world, the sound of droids on the move was unmistakable, there’s nothing else that could produce such a racket.

“Heads down!” you command quickly, getting your squad to duck low or go prone in the deepest part of the ditch.

The eight plus one of you continue on as quick as you can, but you spare a moment to glance over the edge of the road. Sure enough, there’s probably a whole company or more of droids coming out of the forest on that side. B1s and B2s come clanking from the trees in neat lines, marching into the ditch on their side and then on top of the road. You get down at once, worried that any of them might see you. When none of them come over the top, leaving your squad undisturbed, you chance one more look.

Sure enough, the droids reaching the road are simply turning north and marching in the direction you had come from, toward the spaceport. Even now, you recognize how easily they would be able to see you all if any of them simply were to look down and across to you. Yet, none of them seem to have any interest in doing even that. They simply appeared to be following a programmed course or some other kind of objective that had them entirely focused elsewhere. Recognizing that their numbers and proximity were likely overwhelming, you opt to signal your brothers forward quietly.

It’s a long several minutes as the droids passing on the road stomp and clank as loud as any vehicle convoy you had ever heard. There’s a few tense moments in particular where you’re all forced to halt even your slow progress, allowing a droid or two walking far too close to the side even a miniscule chance of noticing you. The entire squad is practically forced to crawl on their bellies, except for 2337 and 4582 who stubbornly keep to their sides to drag the wounded pilot between them.

At last, you all seem to manage to pass the long line of droids on the road. You slip to the back of the squad to ensure you’ve gone away completely unnoticed. It’s then that you spot something odd in their ranks...

>A tactical droid. That must be why the droids are being so precise and focused...

>A tactical droid. That must be why the droids are being so precise and focused…

The model was more than familiar to you. The stout and lumbering droid stood out like a sore thumb among the ranks of the thin and Genosian like B1s and the powerful and heavily armored B2s. From your flash training, you instantly recall that Tactical Droids were something akin to droid officers, although that wasn’t a precise match to the role officers had in the Grand Army. Tactical droids were not usually in command in any sense, rather they were instruments programmed to be used as a sentient commander's tool in the field. Whether executing orders, advising on likelihoods and strategies, or ensuring their less sophisticated metallic soldiers completed their objectives without distraction, the Separatists relied on these droids to keep order in the ranks. For that reason, droids like these were considered high value targets.

A thought comes to your mind.

You quickly motion over to Guile, who is currently covering with 4582 as Wasp and Grizzly move up ahead of you all. The sniper acknowledges and, after letting the engineers take up their own position, he heads over to you with 4582 in tow. You point down the road, near the end of the droid column where the Tactical droid is walking. Guile puts a hand up to his visor and seems to scan where you’ve indicated.

“Hmm…” you hear him vocalize, fairly certain he’s spotted the same droid you have. With every step the Tactical was getting farther and farther away, but it was still well within Guile’s ability to hit.

“Think you can take it out clean?” you ask your vod, eyeing his long-barreled blaster rifle.

He turns his helmet in your direction, the new marksman’s visor making him look strangely alien to you after so many years of seeing his regular helmeted visage. You can still tell his emotion though, his head is cocked almost as if he’s insulted you’ve even had to ask.

“I can oil its joints from here first,” he retorts with a chuckle, “If you want me to make it special.”

You’re about to explain when your other brother chimes in.

“The road is long, level, and straight,” 4582 explains, scanning for himself, “The tall trees on either side minimize wind… Atmospheric pressure is low…This is the kind of shot they wouldn’t even simulate for us. It’s too perfect.”

That was certainly the mechanics of it, you had to grant them. It was very much a strong situation for their skills. However, you still feel somewhat concerned. If you took out the Tactical, it might bring that mass of droids bearing down on your squad who still had a wounded trooper to transport. Alternatively, removing such an important piece would surely be a benefit to the big picture…

>Have them take the shot once you have a big enough gap, this is important enough to risk.
>As much as you want to, there’s doubt in your mind about if you can get away. Deny the shot.

Basically the whole point of having a sniper with our squad. It's probably going to bring down droidekas or commando's down on us, but I think it's worth it.

Such an opportunity was simply too much to pass up. Your brothers were not only supremely confident but utterly capable and to deny them this would be missing the entire point of their skills. One blaster bolt from Guile’s rifle had the chance to send shockwaves through hundreds if not thousands of droids and the Sepaatist plans. You had seen how he had driven away the white-bearded, red-blade wielding Separatist on Kamino, only later learning it was none other than Count Dooku, himself. Even just today, you had seen his shooting precision demonstrated against both enemies up close and targets far away, when he earned his sniper’s visor.

If this could hurt the Separatists, it was his duty to do it and yours to make the call. A part of you remains somewhat cautious, if not hesitant, but it’s a feeling that you’re able to push down. The danger of the shot was in missing, which you felt unlikely, and in bringing the droid’s attention down on your squad. It would be tough to transport a wounded trooper, but you had gotten this far hadn’t you? Your mind quickly works out a plan to hopefully minimize that problem.

“You two set up here,” you order Guile and 4582, “Give us a chance to get further down the road before you fire. Wait until they’re closer to your max effective range if you can, to help yourselves out too.”

“The war will be over by the time it walks out of range for me,” Guile replies, almost certainly smiling surely beneath his helmet.

“Any sign of enemies nearby,” you look to 4582, keeping things serious a moment longer, “You get him out of here. Understood?”

“It will be done, Double-Oh,” 4582 nods, “We won’t let you down.”

“Good hunting, Vode.”

“Vode An,” they both answer.

Taking off quickly, you pass the word on the rest of the squad to pick up the pace. In short order you’ve put another few hundred meters in between yourselves and the droids. You turn around, taking your turn to cover the rear, and look back to your brothers.

Guile has gone prone on the pavement of the road, close to the side. 4582 lies flat on the ground next to him, in the spotter position. They’re close to each other, close enough to speak in whispers and to hear each other’s breath you know. 4582 is probably feeding Guile some last second information on the range and wind speed. You adjust your own view to the end of the Separatist column, now so far away that your own improved optics are having some trouble focusing. It’s getting to the distance now where Guile will likely have to account for the curvature of the planet, you half-joke to yourself.

It’s time for you to leapfrog back to the squad, but you hold your position a few moments longer to watch.

Without any noise, you see the flash of light streak out from the end of Guile’s sniper rifle. The bolt travels the distance quickly, but taking a long enough time that it looks slow and lazy. It lances on, though, true on course and without any deviation from the target. A second passes before you hear the blaster’s retort reach you. You hold your breath as you wait and the moments between your heartbeats feel like an eternity, until you at last see the result. Although the details are hazy, you clearly see the impact on your zoomed display. The droid takes the shot in its center of mass. It seems to stumble, the Tactical Droid flailing its arms out as it topples forward.

The two of your brothers remain motionless, professionally waiting to confirm or follow up with a second shot, but you already know the droid is down and not getting up. That shot may as well have been what all Clone sharpshooters trained off of and strove to. You feel a momentary desire to pass a congratulations over the comlink, but your instincts prevent you from losing your focus just yet. What came next was your responsibility.

Looking down at the column of droids…

>They almost instantly come to a halt, before making an about face. You have their attention now.

That’s done it now, you think with no small sense of satisfaction. The droids were deviating from course and heading your way. Besides taking out an important droid, your brothers had thrown a wrench into the Separatist’s programming. That they were now coming your way meant there would be less in the way of the tanks too. You were all certainly doing your part as soldiers. As the fallout makes itself clear, you quickly get moving again and fall in with the others, now a short way up the road from you.

Guile and 4582 see the sudden shift in priorities as well and immediately rise from their position in take off toward you. They were going fast enough that they would probably catch in several minutes or so, if the squad kept its pace steady. From the looks of things, you had picked a good lead distance as well. The droids are marching in their all too familiar steady pace and all of you would be able to keep in front of them. What was going to be tricky, you knew, was when and where you stopped. It was likely that they would keep pursuing all the way to where Falx’s platoon was supposed to be and then you would be bringing quite a lot of firepower down on them.

Bringing in trouble onto even a well-defended strong point wasn’t ideal. You had gone through the trouble of getting the droids’ attention and dropping it in someone else’s lap didn’t seem particularly clever or welcome.

Dealing with this many droids would take more than a little creativity, but wasn’t that one of the reasons Kal Skirata had taken notice of you for? A’den had done his best to develop that in your training as well. You didn’t have the ammo to deal with all of these droids, but there was more than one way to deal with that problem. Now that they were without a leader in the local area, the droids ought to be easy to predict and to lead.

Supposing you did continue to Falx and his platoon, they might be able to set up a good trap if you could stall the droids for even a few minutes. Just so long as they were able to get some notice. The heavy static over the comlink seems to have picked up markedly though, so much so that you instantly doubt any signal can get through. Sending ahead 2337 with some help and the wounded Clone, while the rest of the squad did their best to knock down the clankers, was direct, practical and just clever enough of a solution to be successful in the current situation.

Sending off one of the heavy weapons didn’t seem wise, especially with confirmed vehicles nearby. Wasp’s mines and explosives would probably come in handy as well. That effectively narrowed down the choice…

>Have 4582 assist 2337 when he catches up. Your brothers will get the job done and more, you’re certain.
>Send Beast ahead to help him. He’s not as trained medically, but he’s got the muscle to make it go faster.

>Have 4582 assist 2337 when he catches up. Your brothers will get the job done and more, you’re certain.

Your do-it-all brother was still the best Clone for the job. His medical experience would probably be of good use to 2337 and the two of them would make as dependable a team as any to relay the message. 4582 wasn’t the kind to take anything personal like being sent away before a fight either, he would do anything you told him with as much happiness as… well as a Clone given orders, you suppose. His loyalty to his brothers was deeper than that, you knew, but it was certainly just so much 4582.

No sooner have you made your decision than he and Guile manage to link up to the squad. They’re breathing heavy, their blasters over their shoulders so they could run fast enough to catch you. You knew the limits of their conditioning enough to know they could still keep this up for a while yet.

“4582,” you shout back, “Head up to 2337! Help him get the pilot to Falx’s platoon up the road. We’ll hold the droids. You prepare a welcome party.”

He responds in the affirmative immediately.

“Good hunting!” he manages to say between breaths, before pushing on forward as fast as he can.

You order the rest of the squad to slow down, dropping the pace dramatically as the six of you form up into a group.

“What’s the plan, Double Oh?” Guile asks directly.

“We don’t need to hold them forever,” you start to explain, “But if we can give them a chance to reach Falx first, we’ll be giving them a larger advantage to hold out.”

For a moment, you consider encouraging them to hold as long as you can, to give the largest advantage possible to those with Falx to get ready. However, you know in your head that saying that would sound too much like sacrificing everything and fighting to the death. That wasn’t your mission here and, in truth, buying a few extra minutes for them was probably not worth it in comparison. Sticking around in the same place would just invite the droids to bring their heavy hitters to bear on you, maybe even vehicles or artillery. This was going to have to be a mobile defence and one that saw you all getting through this.

Guile would be able to engage the droids beyond their effective range for some time, but it wouldn’t last. You could dig in and then engage, but getting into blasting distance of their weapons without much cover was a bad plan. The trees again beckoned as a potential aid. Breaking into pairs again would let one group strike the droid column and then disengage while another attacks. It was a dangerous choice if there were more droids in the trees. There was also your heavy weapons and explosives. Using those would potentially slow the droids greatly…

>Use hit and run tactics in the trees. The coordination will be tough, but this squad is capable of it.

>Focus on shooting from a distance and setting explosives. You’ll let your equipment whittle them down.

Your headstart on the droids provides you with more than a few advantages for the moment, you think to yourself, namely your heavier weaponry. The carbines that most of you carry won’t be effective until the droids are closer, but for now Guile can still take potshots with his sniper rifle when it’s his turn to cover. Harm’s missile launcher would also be able to easily hit the droids, but you’re conscious of the fact that it may not be the best use of the PLX’s capabilities. The key was going to be finding a way to make every shot count for as much destruction as possible. You order the squad to keep falling back slowly, letting Guile carry the work for now.

You consider your other options for the moment, analyzing for any additional ways you might be able to enhance its efficiency. Grizzly’s EMP launcher would potentially be a useful weapon to coordinate with, but it worked on a much shorter range than the PLX and even the DC-15 carbines. He would need to be very close to the droids to make the most of it and, even then, you’d have to have the droids clustered tightly for best results. Your mind shifts to Wasp and his mines. If the droids were concerned with self preservation, you would be able to use those to funnel them slightly together, making them a good target for either the PLX or the EMP launcher. The trouble was, the droids would probably just walk over them without any concern and the group would continue on without a second thought. Even now, with Guile knocking down a droid every handful of seconds, they were just stepping over their fallen droid brethren without any note.

This sort of problem solving wasn’t exactly your strongest aptitude, you much preferred getting in close and doing as much damage as your skills and weapons allowed, but that wasn’t in line with the mission for now. Keeping your squad alive and buying as much time as possible was. Digging in and fighting the wave head on would just result in casualties and your brothers would be little more than a speed bump.

The word speed bump registers something in your mind. If you could put something in the way of the droids, forcing them to either go around or over it, that might not only slow them down, but back up the formation. The droids behind those stopped in front probably wouldn’t react fast enough to keep their gaps or may even just keep marching forward until they were all jammed together-- a perfect target. Since they were clearly sticking to the road, that was the most obvious thing to block their path. You just needed to figure out how to make it hard to traverse somehow…

It might hinder our own forces a bit later on, but they should have the heavy machinery to clear it.

if the main droid advance is on the road,
we could have mines placed in one or two rows on the road - as many as we can to get the whole road rigged- set them to remote detonation, maybe even chip in our detonators, and let the bots walk over them.

Have the EMP weapon wait in ambush in a flanking position, blow the road section after a the first droids clear it, then emp and blast them while we provide cover.

One big chunk of the droid advance blasted and then we can fuck off.

>The trees on either side are tall and heavy. Bringing those down would do the job.

The trees. You’re practically ready to smack your helmet at how simple the answer was. Bringing down one or two trees would probably set the droids back and provide a sufficient opportunity to take out a large chunk of them in one shot. There were some downsides, of course. Blocking the road with trees was probably only a temporary impediment and one that would probably not work as well more than once. If the droids didn’t clear the way, it could also pose some trouble for any Republic forces trying to push down the road later as well.

At least for the armor, you think to yourself, there would be little difficulty. The walker types would simply not be bothered, stepping over or crushing anything sufficiently small. The fighter tanks could simply boost their repulsor power and fly over anything as mundane as a log. The troopers would be able to climb over as well, but more likely than not they would get around to clearing the debris themselves. The most immediate concern to you was really expending the ordnance to make it happen. You had no doubt the mines would be able to handle the job, but it didn’t guarantee which way the trees would come down. Making them fall to the side or even the wrong way would be worthless and mostly just a waste of explosives.

Your mind is settled, you would just have to count on Wasp to have an idea on how to make it work just right. There didn’t seem to be any unreasonable downsides otherwise and the time had more than come to give the droids following you something to make them cautious.

“Wasp!” you shout over to the engineer, “How many mines do you still have?

“Eight,” he answers curtly, not wasting another word.

“Pick out a couple large trees up ahead on the side of the road,” you start to order, “Preferably ten meter spacing between both and rig them up to fall on the road.”

“I don’t have any remote detonators,” he notes, curious as to what you have in mind, “How should they be set?”

That was something of a surprise to you. You had figured that was in their kit… But demolitions weren’t necessarily the engineer’s main specialty. That had been 6018’s job, to bring that kind of equipment in his kit. With him gone, Wasp probably hadn’t thought to stock any and you hadn’t been there when they were all resupplying. The whirlwind of activity between meeting Captain Alfonse twice and training Lieutenant Dance’s troops had taken all your time.

You would just have to adapt…

There was little to be done otherwise. You didn’t want to risk anything going wrong. Putting it on a timer would at least make sure it happened and would keep you all well clear of the droids when it did.

“We’ll use a timer,” you finally answer, “Get the first pair set and standby for the time.”

The Clone nods, but you can tell he’s not particularly convinced. Wasp dashes forward to do as you’ve ordered and Grizzly picks up his own pace to follow after, likely to assist. You give the signal for the rest to stop and the four of you huddle up.

“Guile,” you ask your brother, “How far back are they now? Front of the line, exactly.”

Your extra words after the question will hopefully press the need to be precise, you think to yourself, if you can get a good couple estimates this wouldn’t be too terrible. You check the chrono on your display and monitor the time closely, as Guile turns and raises his rifle to check.

“Harm,” you continue speaking, not waiting, “Any shrapnel missiles left?””

“Two, Sergeant,” he answers.

“I make them at 448 meters, Double Oh,” Guile adds in, not looking away from his scope.

“Standby,” is your answer, but to which of them you don’t specify, “Beast, give me your shield.”

The trooper obeys instantly passing the shield to you. A few seconds pass by on the clock.

“Guile, range?”

“441, Double-Oh,” the sniper marks for you again.

Taking Beast’s shield, you walk to the side of the road near where Wasp and Grizzly are working. You jam into the soft ground, the shield lodging into the dirt and standing upright.

“Range?” you ask again.

“432 meters,” your brother replies.

Doing some quick math, you average the change over the handful of seconds in between checks. It seems the droids are content with a walking pace. It seems almost a waste considering they weren't supposed to get tired like regular soldiers. Maybe they were conserving power…

“Understood,” you nod, “Wasp, you ready?”

“Almost!” comes the engineer’s shout. He’s busily mounting mines near the base of a very good size tree, probably close to half a meter thick. Hopefully the mines will be enough to topple it.

“Detonation should be 6 minutes…” you start to say, holding until the right number ticks by, “From now. Mark time”

“Time marked,” Wasp replies, “Setting.”

“Use that time point minus 20 seconds for the next one down,” you conclude, before heading back to the others. You think you hear Wasp say something quietly behind you, but you don’t have time to stop and ask.

“Harm, load up and set the PLX for dumb mode,” the rapid fire orders keep coming from you, “300 and 320 meters.”

He complies, immediately setting up the sophisticated launcher wahead. Its guided features were generally only useful for vehicles, you knew. With infantry the best you would be able to manage was an airburst directly overtop the droids.

As Wasp and Grizzly wrap up the second tree for detonation, Harm finishes with his launcher. You give the order for them all to move out again, proceeding to double time down the road. Using the tall face of the shield shoved into the ground as a ranging feature, you have Guile announce when the squad has put 300 meters in between yourselves and where it and the explosives were placed.

“Take positions!” you command. Wasp and Grizzly clear off the road to the right, while Guile and you peel off to the left into the ditch. Only Beast stays in the center, taking a few steps before kneeling down. The droids are still well back, but every step puts them closer and closer to their blaster range. It was only a matter of waiting now.

It takes the droids well over another minute to march forward before they start closing in on the trap. You watch carefully as the chrono closes in on the detonation time…

“Harm, standy for double shot…”

The seconds pass, only a few heartbeats to go…

“Ready!” the Clone acknowledges, his launcher leveled straight down the road.

Exactly as the clock hits the time you had ordered, the first pair of mines explode on the side of the road. It’s far enough from the droids that none of them are damaged, but as the fireball grows at the base of the mighty tree’s trunk you plainly see the top jerk suddenly. The wood at the base has been blown apart and the tree gives way with a crack almost as loud as the explosion itself, starting to topple over onto the road.

The droids at the front, having halted from the explosion, quickly start to push backward to avoid the tree falling on them. The column continues moving though, as the droids behind them seem to not register the need to stop. You see some of the closest droids pushing against the tide, making them all start to bunch up before the falling tree obscures your view. It hits with a large thunk and pollen, dust, leaves, and twigs are all thrown up, obscuring your view. You didn’t need to see the next part however.

The second pair of mines explode exactly on time, farther back and off to the side of the droid column. Again, no droids were probably damaged you think, but the big tree is shattered to its roots and it too begins to fall over. The droids below were probably already clumped together from the first group trying to go backwards. They were stuck in a shoving match as the droids farther back now try to move forward or backwards to avoid this one too, but failing to clear from the road.

“Fire!”

Harm obeys immediately, launching the first shot and then rapidly following up with the quick-firing second missile.

The missiles sail straight and true down the road. The first one passes over the first fallen tree and the droids stuck in between, before flying over the second and then detonating. The missile explodes, likely raining pain and destruction on the droids standing there. Barely any time later, the second missile hits its shorter range point and explodes as well, right in between the fallen trees and scraping the droids unlucky enough to have been below it.

You consider your next order. You’re at the extreme range of regular blasters now and you could put fire on the droids that have survived or attempt to get past the tree, but it may make you exposed to their return fire and anything else now moving up…

>Have the squad start shooting, even if it’s not effective. The droids will probably shift to the defensive.
>The droids are disoriented and will have to slow down now after a trap like that. You all need to get clear and get to Falx.

I'll lock this choice in. I've been pretty rough the last few days and I think I'll let that be that last decisions of this thread. I'll probably type up a post or two this weekend, but I'll call the episode here and stat prepping for a new one on Monday. Thanks for sticking along troopers, will be scrapping clankers again soon.

Otherwise feel free to chat or ask any questions you might have. It's probably a good time to check if you like the overall direction of things as well, i.e. small unit tactics operating fairly apart from larger formations.

Take all the time you need, QM! Thanks again for an excellent run. I do like these small unit tactics, but switching things up would be fun too. Maybe a fighting alongside a larger group, maybe some stealth and infiltration, who knows?

Countdown has taken to the bounty hunting life well, I see.

The small unit stuff is good fun but yeah Id love to see us work with some larger sized units

>Siege Of Mandalore
I was under the impression that this was predominantly based in Legends (though we already fucked that royally when we put Jango in the ICU), but that'd be kino as all hell.

I mean, it's really all up to the QM, considering that they're the one sending us everywhere. I would love to have a final showdown with Jango on Mandalore though.
