After a long day of work, you finally got off the train and made it back home. You unlock the door to your apartment and close the door behind you, taking off your shoes and dropping your briefcase onto the floor of the hallway. Loosening your tie, you head for the living room, grateful that you have someone waiting for you when you return. Well, that’s what you thought anyways when you picked up a shivering catgirl in a cardboard box last week. You spot her sitting on your couch, watching television with her legs crossed, and you say, “I’m home.”“Mnn,” Kaede replies.Your place isn’t much, but it’s still home. A couch, coffee table, and television fill the living room, a table with two chairs at the side. On the wall adjacent is a bookshelf, whose top shelf’s contents are now strewn all over the floor. One of the books, your favorite entry in the series of detective novels, has fallen poorly and folded a few of the pages. Grunting, you pick it up and do your best to straighten it out. It doesn’t work. You ask, “What happened here?”“What?”“The bookshelf,” you answer, pointing at the mess, “Was this you?”She only glances at it before turning her attention back. “No. It was an earthquake.”“An earthquake only knocked everything off a single shelf,” you restate, “Really?”“Mnn.”She’s been nothing but recalcitrant ever since she agreed to stay at your place.>Scold her.>Shut off the TV.>Resign yourself to cleaning up the mess.>Spray her with water.>Threaten to not feed her until the books are placed back.>Write-in.>Feel free to pick something just to see what happens. If you hit a bad end, we can always rewind.

>>4200682I'll bite the bullet. No idea how long this quest will last so here goes.>Scold her.>Spray her with water.Bad cat. No knocking over stuff I like. Now why was she in a box and how common are cat girls?

Sighing, you turn back around to the kitchen and start opening the cupboards. You’ve never done this before, but you know what they say: there’s a first time for everything. The empty spray bottle is just where you left it after your previous foray in the world home herb garden proved unsuccessful. You blame it on your apartment’s lack of a balcony. You fill up the bottle and walk up in front of Kaede. She looks annoyed that you’re blocking the way, and when she notices what’s in your hand, it’s too late. You start spraying.“Gah! No, stop!” She tries to shield herself with her arms, and you stop momentarily.“Don’t lie to me.” You have no idea how people keep these fuckers as pets but maybe she’s just an exception. They’re not particularly intelligent, affectionate, nor helpful.“I’m not lying!” she says, dropping her guard. You respond by blasting her face with water again. “Stop that! What’s wrong with you?!”“Are you seriously telling me an earthquake did that?”“Y-yeah. So?” You start spraying again, and this time she climbs onto her feet and climbs over the couch, now gritting her teeth.“You better pick those books up or else,” you tell her, “How about no dinner?”Her face flashes with anger and panic. “Fine, fine! I’ll clean it up!” She crouches and starts pick up the books, and you watch as she grabs an open one and closes it, folding a page.“Fuck’s sake, if you can’t do it properly-“She opens it back up and angrily smooths it out before closing it again. You watch as she stands on the tip of her toes to slide it back onto the shelf and repeating with the rest. “Happy?!”You finally lower the bottle and Kaede relaxes a bit. On the TV behind you, some foreign drama cuts to a commercial break. Right now, you should make dinner. You’re hungry and she probably is too.>You’re feeling lazy. Just make some cup ramen.>Do it properly and cook a full meal.>Go outside and buy something from the convenience store nearby.>Write-in.>Feed Kaede tonight.>Don’t feed Kaede.

>>4200721>Write-in.Give her an uncooked, unseasoned block of ramen.
>Do it properly and cook a full meal.>Feed KaedeRolling up your sleeves you enter the kitchen and put down the spray bottle. While you could just go outside and buy something, you should do it properly. That is what you told her after all, so you shouldn’t be a hypocrite. Opening your fridge, you check what you have. It’s getting a bit empty. Tomorrow’s when you’re restocking anyways, but for now, you’ll work with what you have. After washing the rice and throwing it into the cooker, you peek out to check on Kaede. Sure enough, she places the last of the books back up and grumbles as she goes back to her show. You don’t know if she actually ruined more pages, but you’ll give her the benefit of the doubt and cook for two. When you’re done, you carry out the dishes to the table and she happily hurries over. For a moment, she looks as if she’s about to start eating without you, reconsidering when you stare at her. She shrinks back, to wait instead. You clean up quickly in the kitchen and head back so she can stop fidgeting. As the two of you begin to eat, you attempt to break the awkward silence.“So, did anything interesting happen today?”“There was an earthquake,” she replies with her mouth full.“That again?” You watch as she greedily stuffs her face as if you were going to eat it all. She probably made a mess because she had nothing better to do except see what was on the bookshelf. “I’m going grocery shopping tomorrow. Do you want to come?” It’ll be the weekend and you luckily don’t have to show up.Her eyes widen, “C-Can I?”“You haven’t left the apartment in a week, huh? Yeah, why not.”“I...” Kaede stops, noticing something, “Like I’d get excited over something like that.”“So... are you coming are not?”“Obviously I’m coming!”The conversation’s making you lose your appetite.Kaede finishes eating first and lets out a slur of words that you think is her thanking you for the meal. She runs to the bath to get it going and you pick up dirty dishes to wash.Passing by the bookshelf, you notice she put everything in out of order. You might as well have done it yourself.>Yell at her from the living room.>Just let it go.>Grab the spray bottle for when she gets out.>Tell Kaede you’re not taking her out tomorrow.>Write-in.

>Grab the spray bottle for when she gets out.>Tell Kaede you’re not taking her out tomorrow. You wash the dishes, the bottle ready when you’re done. You sit on the couch, watching the awful show for a while before deciding to change channels. Eventually Kaede steps out after racking up your utility bills to see you waiting. She’s changed into her pajamas and has hesitantly looking your way.“I take it back. I’m not taking you out tomorrow.”“W-what?” She has a hand on the door, ready to lock herself in.“I said to do it properly. You know how to read, can’t you? It’s completely out of order!”“You never said anything about that! You told me to pick it up so I did!”You get up. “It was implied! Look! I have to fix it myself. I might as well have done it from the start!” All she’s done is cause trouble for you.“So?! How is that my fault?! I did exactly what you told me to do!” She balls up her fists. Before you can actually punish her, she grabs a towel, throws it at you, and then runs for your room where her futon is, locking the door behind her. That was dumb considering you have to get in there anyways, but you must’ve cornered her enough for her to do something like that. Great. You don’t want to break down your own god damn bedroom door.Left with no other option, you attempt to diffuse the situation. Standing in front of it, you say, “Listen, I’m not mad.”“You are mad! I can hear it!”“I put the bottle down,” you tell her as you put it on the table. “Just open the door.”“...Don’t do that again. I’m not some kind of wild animal!”“I won’t if you open the door.”A minute passes before she finally obliges, swinging it open and stepping back. She looks like she wants to say something but instead opts to not dig her fingers in your eyes. She probably wants to ask about you taking back what you said but doesn’t want to suffer the indignity of it.Regardless, you say, “Just... just don’t touch my bookshelf, alright?”“I won’t,” she replies.Leaving it at that, you decide to just enter the bath. You’re already fed up with work. You don’t need more on your plate.___________Next morning, the tension hasn’t fully disappeared.“I’m leaving,” you say as you exit. Kaede says nothing to you as you close the door. You wonder what you should do about her as you head over to the nearby supermarket. Lately, you’ve been really trying to take salvage your weekends. Your supervisor’s been breathing down your neck and you’ve been forced to catch up on his slack on your own personal time. But that’s not important. You go through the aisles, getting the essentials and doing the following week’s worth of groceries. As you’re looking through desserts, you spot something. It’s Kaede’s favorite pudding. Well, it isn’t as if she’s exactly sampled more than one brand and type, but she loves it enough.A part of you does feel bad about what happened yesterday, but...>But some, just in case.>Don’t.

After all, you could just be buying them for yourself. Nodding as you make your perfect plan, you drop them into your basket and move along. Pulling out your phone, you go through your checklist of things to get.You also check to see if there were any earthquakes in the area, and your search is fruitless. Maybe it was so small no one bothered to report it.When you’re checking the expiration dates on a carton of milk, you hear someone call you from behind. You turn to see a familiar face: your next door neighbor. You usually run into her this time of week.“Hey Rina,” you greet, “Out for groceries?”“Yup!” She gives you a beaming smile. “Wow, you look super tired. Is everything okay?”You wave the thought away. “It’s nothing I can’t handle.”“Eh? Is that right? You know, you shouldn’t put up with your boss making you do unreasonable things.”“It’s not like I have a choice.”“But you should take care of yourself! If something happens to you, I won’t know what to do.”You jokingly thump your chest. “Hey, I’m still young! And alright, I won’t let him push me around too much.”“Good,” she replies, placing a carefully selected milk carton in my basket. “Oh, I heard something interesting lately. Are you... taking care of a catgirl?”“Ghh. It was the landlady, wasn’t it?”“Yup!” Rina grins. “Let me come over again sometime, okay? I want to see her!”She probably would stop wanting after Kaede tries some shit. I’ll bother you about it until you give up, you know!”You rub the back of your neck. “Come on, I don’t need more things to worry about, do I?”“Why would you worry? It’s not like we’re strangers.”“...You wouldn’t get it,” you reply. Right now, you’re wondering if you should ask her for advice. Come on, you can take catgirl by yourself, can’t you? This is embarrassing. You can’t believe you’re even considering this.“Hey...” Rina says, “What’s with that troubled look? It’s making me feel bad.”“Eh, it’s nothing.”“Then, let me give you unsolicited advice!” she says, “I don’t really know what you’re going through, but I’m sure it can be fixed with bribery!”“I don’t think bribery solves anything.”“Haha, probably not.”You and Rina talk about nothing in particular until after exiting the supermarket, where Rina starts heading off somewhere else to run an errand while you go home. She tells you to send her a picture of the catgirl and you respond noncommittally. When you walk back up the stairs, your mood is a little lighter. Unlocking the door, you step in and announce your entry.“I’m home,” you say.Kaede doesn’t reply, and you just walk in, dropping the grocery bags in the living room right as you notice your briefcase open and the papers inside now scattered all over. They’re all completely shredded. Meanwhile, the catgirl is sitting on the couch, attempting to nonchalantly watch TV.“Kaede!” you say. “What?”“What the fuck did you do?!” You’re royally fucked. Your boss was too lazy to handle some work and relinquished responsibility onto you, and now if the axe is going to fall, it’s going to come down on your neck. How are you going to even salvage this? Tape? No, tape isn’t going to fix this at all! You don’t even know what tiny chunk of paper goes with what!Kaede, looking a little unnerved by how freaked out you are, says, “I-It wasn’t me...!”Did she do this because you refused to take her outside? She just lied to your face for the second time. Sure, you want to do things, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to follow through with them, are you? You can’t believe this. When you take a step toward her, she reaches around the couch and takes out your bottle and spraying your face. The room is just as you left it, the bookshelf is just as tidy. As you go to the kitchen to start cooking, you notice Kaede following you.She says, “Hey, I want curry today.”“Again? I don’t think we have any ingredients left for that.”“Ghhh, alright...” Kaede grumbles as she trudges back to the couch. You check the fridge again. You’re out of meat, but there is some fish in there. Rubbing the back of your neck, you wonder what you should do. >Just cook whatever you want.Sure, but what is it that you actually want to cook? The answer is nothing. You’ve been stressed out the entire day, and right now, you want to do as little work as possible. It would be nice if Kaede actually did something around here, but that’s too much to expect.Regardless, you season the fish, throw it in the oven, and call it a job done. While you wait for the timer, you go over to your couch to find your catgirl lying across it.You tell her, “If you’re not going to move your legs, I’m just going to sit down on them.”She yawns, pretending not to hear, and you begin to lower yourself. She says, “Hey, hey, hey! What are you doing?!” Quickly she pulls back, annoyed at your stunt. You ask, “Are you just watching the TV all day?”Her head drops down onto a cushion. “It’s not like I have anything else to do.”Huh. She’s got a point. >”I think I have a game console stored somewhere.”>”Do you want to come with me when I get groceries tomorrow?”>”You can use my PC when I’m gone.”>”Yeah, TV’s good.”>”You probably wouldn’t be so bored if you actually did some of the chores.”>Write-in.Last update for today

She shifts positions and crosses her legs, glancing back at you when you don’t look away. “...What?” You better throw the idea out there while you still have her attention. ”You probably wouldn’t be so bored if you actually did some of the chores.” You’re sure she knows how to read somewhat or at least enough to do basic tasks.“Eh? I don’t want to do chores.” Too busy getting invested in the TV drama you guess.“You’ve been freeloading this entire time. You could at least do something to help lighten the load.”She faces away from you, not wanting to make eye contact. “...” Under her breath, she mumbles something. Barely, you catch something about ruining everything, but that could just be your ears playing tricks on you.“Hm? You can’t do that!”“I’ll unplug the TV too. It’s not like I usually watch it anyway.”“N-no, fine! I’ll do some chores!” Kaede says, “You didn’t have to threaten me like that...!”You shrug when you set the dishes out on the table. She looks pretty bitter about the whole thing, but as long as she can do something like clean the floor, you don’t care. The rest of the night goes on as always, and it seems she accepted having to actually do work.___________The next morning, you’re digging through your closet.“Hey,” Kaede says, tugging on your shirt. “Isn’t it time to go already? What are you looking for?”“It’s...” You grunt as your hands feel the very thing you’re looking for. With a bit of effort, you’re able to pull it out. “...A leash.”You move to attach it to her color when she takes a step back. She says, “No, nonono! I am not wearing that!”“Of course you are. Her face flushes with embarrassment before saying, “Are we going or not?!” You begin to exit with Kaede following, and she asks again, “Y-You are going to buy me pudding right? You weren’t lying?”“Why would I lie about something like that?” you say. After exiting and heading down the street, Kaede excitedly looks around the street as her ears twitch. Along the way, you pass by someone being pulled along by their doggirl, exchanging a smile and a greeting. When you make it to the supermarket, Kaede looks at it in awe and apprehension. She points out, “There’s a lot of people in there...”“Really? Hm, just stick by close.”Kaede wordlessly accepts your idea and accompanies you inside. As you’re busy going down the aisles looking for what to get, she keeps studying things without ever bothering you. She obviously wants to, but you have a feeling she doesn’t want to annoy you too much. Eventually you get to the rows and rows of pudding for Kaede to ogle over.“W-wha... There’s so many!”“Which one do you want?” you ask, “Pick one and I’ll get it.”“Mnnn, let me see...”She starts to peruse what’s for sale when from behind someone taps your shoulder. You spin around to see Rina, smiling.“Hi!” she says, “Oho? What’s this?” She grins as she raises her hand to cover her mouth in exaggerated surprise. “Is this the catgirl I’ve been hearing about?”“Ghh, word travels fast, huh?” you reply. Kaede, already having selected something, holds it in her hands and partially hides behind you as she assesses Rina. You say, “Kaede, this is Rina, my neighbor. Rina, this is Kaede.”Rina says, “Nice to meet you, Kaede!”“Y-Yeah,” she replies.Rina says, “Aw, is she afraid of me? Now now, I don’t bite.” She sticks out her tongue jokingly and Kaede grimaces. The catgirl replies, “D-Don’t treat me like some kind of kitten.” Trying to back up, she finds that there’s nowhere to go, and you’re holding onto the leash tightly.>”Rina, come on. You should be careful around strangers, after all.”“Except you’re not a stranger,” you retort.“But I am one to her,” Rina replies, “Oh, I know! You like pudding, right? Why don’t I buy you a pack of my favorite one?”“Eh?” Kaede utters, her ears perking up. “Really? You’re not messing with me?”“Nope! I’m completely serious!” she replies, and then to you, she whispers, “What have you been doing to this poor girl?”You reply, “W-What? I haven’t been doing anything like that! She’s like this ever since I found her-“Kaede cuts into the conversation of whispers. “N... Nice to meet you, Rina!”___________A short while later, the two of you part ways with her. They seem to be getting along better than expected, but you suppose that’s Rina’s specialty. She has a way of worming into things. On the entire way back, Kaede eyes the pudding in your bag. Sighing, you take one out and give it to her. She makes a small sound of excitement before opening it and digging in with a plastic spoon. It’s then that you notice Rina bought something and snuck it into your bag. It’s... a bag of kibble? Are these supposed to be treats? You doubt the edibility of these things but you’re not going to just throw them away. When you get back home, you begin to put away the groceries while Kaede hurries to the living room. She’s also noticeably happier the leash is off. Or it could be the pudding.“Hey, wait,” you call out, “About the chores-““Whaaat? You’re not sure what’s going on nor the kind of face she’s making, but by the way her ears are moving, you’ve got a clue. “I caaan do that!” Kaede says, trying her hardest not to sound interested and coming out awkward instead.“Then get over here,” you say, putting things away in the fridge.“What are we making?” she asks as she walks up to you.“What do you want?”“Ramen!”“Alright, then help wash these vegetables. Be gentle.”Eagerly, she takes them to the sink and starts running them under the water. About a minute passes while you do your own tasks before you hear Kaede sputter. “What the...?” You look and see her trying really hard to look normal. “Did you just try to eat them raw? I mean, you can, but seriously?”“Ghh...”You asked her to help you but it ended up being more like a weird teaching session instead. You couldn’t trust her with a knife or an open flame, and she almost knocked over a pot of boiling water. In fact, you never imagined feeling this stressed on one of your days off. Nevertheless, you managed to prevent any disasters from occurring at the cost of failing to lighten up your workload in any measurable way. When you’re done cleaning up after lunch, you’re about to finally take a break when you hear the doorbell ring. Kaede, who was kicking her legs in the air on the couch, stops to see who’s there.“Coming,” you say, trudging to the door. Through the peephole you see a girl-no wait, she’s just short and looks young. You can’t be fooled. You open up and she stands there with her arms crossed.“Took you long enough,” Chiya says. It’s the landlady. “It’s the old hag,” you say, mixing up your thoughts. She responds in kind by driving a foot into your shin. You buckle and brace yourself on the doorway. You hiss in pain. And then as if she did nothing at all, she continues. “I’m here for your surprise review! Or checkup! However you want to phrase it.”“What the hell is that?! You need to be on your best behavior, got it!”“Er...!”“Don’t act like how you did around Rina, okay?! This affects you too!”“Uh, mnn,” she mumbles in affirmation. “Wait, what did you mean by that?! I didn’t do anything wrong back then!”“You know what I mean,” I reply, “I don’t have time for this.”You immediately go and pick your briefcase off the floor and toss it onto the table, and on the way back to the door, you double-check to make sure everything is tidy. You swing open the door again and tell Chiya, “Okay, come right on in. I should warn you, she’s not good with new people.”“Relax, I’m great with animals!” She replies while entering, and you follow behind her as she steps into the living room. Mildly elated, she exclaims, “Oh, there’s your cat!” Kaede’s eye twitches, and Chiya steps closer. The landlady brings out a hand to pet her. “Aren’t you a cute little thing?”Kaede almost reflexively hisses at her before opting to freeze up after seeing you standing there. Chiya messes up her hair and scratches behind Kaede’s ears, and she doesn’t say a single thing. It doesn’t even look like she’s breathing. After a few seconds, the landlady says, “I’m Chiya! What’s your name, hmm?”Like a constrained cry for help, the catgirl squeaks out her in reply. “Kaede.”“You’re a little shy, aren’t you? Ah, well, I’ll leave you to it then.” She turns on her heel and backs off, going up to you and saying, “Looks like everything’s in order. Make sure she’s on a leash and that she isn’t peeing everywhere, and we won’t have any problems!” And then she starts leaving.“R...Right,” you reply.Upon that last sentence, Kaede’s face reddens and she snarls, flush with humiliation. How dare you...!”“Gaaah!” Chiya cries out, “Get off me! Stop that!” She manages to roll over on her back to use her arms, but Kaede bites down on her hand. Chiya, shouting in pain, orders you, “Help me, you idiot, why are you just standing there!”“Ah.” You finally get going, walking over to Kaede and trying to pull her off. “Kaede, stop that! Let go of her already, she’s had enough!”Panting, the catgirl slows down and eventually lets go, and mostly by you, climbs off of Chiya who stumbles back up, furious and flustered. She pats herself off and readjusts her clothes, then straightening out her hair. To you, she says, “Your catgirl is simply out of control!”“Hey, come on,” you say, “That was kind of on you.”“Why you...! >Tell her to clean it up and you’ll help her with the restYou find her, unwilling to listen to more of your plates get smashed. At this rate, you won’t have any left, and then what are you going to do?“Kaede,” you say, seeing her crouched down and picking up the shards of ceramic. She nicks herself and winces, recoiling and then placing the finger in her mouth. “Don’t use your hands for that.” You leave briefly and come back with a dustpan to give her. “Just clean it up and I’ll wash the rest, got it?”“Wait, I can do it!”“Please just sweep up the pieces.”You shut her down, and reluctantly, she obliges, gathering all of the bits of broken plate and putting it in the trash. When you go ahead and finish washing, you notice she actually got halfway before she started fumbling. You scrub the rest and put them away to dry, Kaede standing behind you and biting her lower lip. She watches you as you fetch something. You say, “Give me your hand?” The catgirl extends her finger and you put on a small bandage. “There.” She doesn’t thank you, instead sulking back to the couch. Rubbing the back of your neck, you wonder why she’s gloomy. You’re the one who has to do everything apparently. For the rest of the night, Kaede barely speaks at all. It’s something you take advantage of as you swiftly finish up on your work. You fall asleep quickly that night, exhausted. The next morning, you’re woken up by the fire alarm. You bolt upright, wondering what the unholy fuck is happening in your apartment. Out of the corner of your eye, you notice Kaede’s futon being empty. Strange, considering you’re usually the one who gets up first. You then swing open the door and walk out to see smoke pouring from the kitchen, the catgirl running to the window and opening it.It’s when she turns around that she notices you up, but she’s not that surprised considering the alarm is loud as all hell. Still, she freezes, unsure of what to do.“I, um, it was... I tried to...”You run to the kitchen to see a pan and its smoldering contents placed on the counter, the stovetop fire still going. >Berate Kaede“After what happened yesterday, you should have waited for me to wake up so I could help you in case things got wrong.”She breathes in sharply, her body tense. The alarm finally stops, and she’s almost completely still, unsure what to do or to say. Finally, after what feels like an eternity, she says, “...I thought... I could make it easier for you...” And then almost silently, she tells you, “Sorry.”Rubbing your forehead, you try to consider what to do next. You didn’t want to wake up to this. What an awful way to start off the day.Maybe you could pay for a trainer or something, but do you really have money for that? You’re sure there are places dedicated for this sort of thing, and in your current state, you’re genuinely considering it. You mentally jot it down for later. And then, the doorbell rings. You hold your breath as you open up. Thankfully, it isn’t Chiya, but Rina. Her hair’s all messed up and she’s in her pajamas, but she’s at your door looking worriedly in. She asks, “Is everything alright? The alarm stopped so you must have got it under control, but...”You don’t even know how to reply to that. Well, you do, but you don’t know what you want to tell her. “Mornings, huh?”She puts on a smile for you. “Well... If I didn’t want that, then I wouldn’t have offered, now would I?” she replies, softly laughing. “Okay, then! Let me see the damage.”After she steps in, you close the door behind her. She coughs and waves away some of the smoke. You tell her, “I can-““I’ll clean things up here, so you go worry about making breakfast!”You smile. “Thanks, Rina. Did you eat yet?”“Yup!” she replies. You thought it was a rhetorical question but apparently not. Strange, but if she doesn’t want to stay for breakfast than you can’t really make her. While you prepare to cook, Rina- and Kaede awkwardly enough- fully airs out the apartment. They both get rid of the spilled burnt breakfast and the former scrubs the pan. When Rina’s done, she happily looks over the now clean state of the place. Inexplicably enough, she was cheery the entire time. Her brain’s wired differently, you guess. Before you’re even done cooking, Rina makes her exit. “I would’ve made you two breakfast if you asked, but I guess since you don’t want me here, I’ll get out of your hair,” she jokingly says.“Hey! Come on, I didn’t mean it like that.”She sticks out her tongue before telling you, “Then make it up for me sometime.”“Fine, fine,” you reply as she leaves. Small cost, you suppose. You finish and plate up, suddenly feeling that you really should go out and buy some more. As you sit down and eat, the catgirl picks at her meal. Finally, you tell her, “Thanks for trying, Kaede.”“...”“I really appreciate it, but you shouldn’t do things unsupervised yet. Maybe when you’re better, okay?”She mumbles, “Even then...”“We all have to start somewhere, right? Hey, cheer up.”“...”The rest of breakfast goes without another word. Only the TV playing in the background fills the silence. This time, you don’t even ask her to help you out with washing the dishes. You honestly can’t afford losing anymore dishes. In the middle of it, however, someone rings your doorbell. This time, you know exactly who it is. She studies you for a hot second before relaxing. “If you burn your apartment down, I’ll make sure you’ll owe me everything you ever had!” Then, in a much softer voice, she tells you, “It’s good you didn’t hurt yourself.”“Aw, are you worried about me?”“If you die, I’ll have to find another reliable tenant. Don’t work yourself to the bone.”“Don’t you worry, I’ll easily outlive you given your age.”“You...!” Chiya goes in for the shin strike but you step back just in time as you close the door. There’s a thud as she misses. “I have a copy of your keys, you brat!”“You wouldn’t dare!”“I’ll let it slide this time, got it?!”You hear her leave, and only when she’s gone do you sigh. At the very least, she didn’t barge in today.Kaede, who was watching from the living room, walks off to sit on the couch without any comment. And then, finally. After six whole days, you get to do nothing. Going back to your desk, you sit down and then abruptly took a nap. And afterwards, to your surprise, you actually got the time to start playing a game you wanted to get into ages ago. That said, you didn’t get too far into it.Lunch and dinner pass by without a hitch, although Kaede was silent the entire time. She didn’t injure herself again, but mostly because you’ve been keeping an eye on her. You’d like to say she improved, but you did give her tasks that were almost impossible to mess up.You thought about doing something to cheer her up, but the morning had you drained. Next week, you planned. You also looked up a bunch of learning services. You’re not sure how effective they’d be, but they’re certainly costly. Just barely you can squeeze it into the budget, and speaking of budget, you need new plates. So many things happening, and there’s so little time.____At night, you climb into bed and pull your sheets over. On the futon beside the bed, Kaede has her back facing you, curled up. Tomorrow, you think. Or the day after. Or the weekend after.___________Your eyes close by themselves, heavy as ever. You drift off, dreaming about living a slow life in the countryside.___________________________
>>4206015And then you wake up. You feel a weight on you. The weight of a person, in fact, straddling your hips. You open your eyes to find Kaede on top, her hands on your chest and an unreadable expression on her face. You mutter, “What are you doing?”“You didn’t have to cover for me,” she tells you. “I know. I get it. I’m not smart or talented. I keep on doing and saying stupid things.”“Hey...”“I can’t do anything, but I’m not blind.” There’s a hitch in her breathing. “Everyone you know that I met instantly hates me. I know part of you hates me too. I’m nothing but a burden.”“Don’t say that, Rina doesn’t-““And I hate it when you look at me like that. With pity. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do when you do that,” she says underneath her breath. There’s a pause. “And you said you’ll stop cooking for me if I don’t pull my own weight, so...”Without intending to, you hold your breath. You don’t know what to say, much less how to look at her. Like a black box, all of your words and actions along with hers are thrown in to be jumbled up. Not a single thing comes out the way intended, all stumbling little disasters as both of you blunder to a single conclusion. With one hand, Kaede begins to undo her top.“This is the only way I know how,” she tells you.>Let it happen.>Stop her.>Write-in.Last post for today and only one update tomorrow

>>4206016>Let it happen."I'll help you and you can do more things than you can even imagine"
>>4206048This. There needs to be a lot more talking, I mean come on we just sat around and played video games when we could've been bonding with our catgirl.
>>4206083I don't think that's bad, honestly—our dude needed some time to relax, having a work week and then having to deal with the catgirl's shenanigans. But I think your general point is solid, and we do need more communication.

>>4206585do it later when she's not just trying to make sure you don't throw her on the street retard
>>4206633as in, while i do agree that doing it with a catgirl is good, you should wait until it's happening just because she wanted to do it regardless of it being about thanking youthen it'll be better, because vanilla > the rest

>Stop her.You grab her wrists, stopping her. There’s a thousand things you can say but you haven’t the faintest clue as to what she wants to hear the most from you. It could be nothing at all, but you speak. You never know until you try."Look, what I said was to get you to stop lazing around doing nothing. I'm not going to throw you out on the streets as long as you're trying to do better," you whisper. Your words softly drift into the air, cutting through the quiet of the night. Slowly, Kaede lowers her hands.Your palms slide onto hers as she sits there in silence. She shifts on top of you and your heart is pounding much like hers, but there’s nothing exciting about any of it. It’s all coated in apprehension and exhaustion. You ask, “Please, can’t you talk to me? I can't tell what you're thinking most of the time, and I don’t know how to communicate with you."She responds, “So, I don’t have anything worth giving you, hm?” She tries to smile and laugh it off, but there’s no effort behind it. “When I try, I mess up. I know better than anyone that I’m good for nothing.”“And we’ll move on and get better. We all have to start from somewhere, right?”“I broke your plates...”“So, I’ll buy some more.”“...And I set off the fire alarm...”“And you had it under control before I even woke up.”Kaede’s hand closes around yours, her frustration made physical. Then, she lowers her head, slowly until her head rests against your chest, hiding her face away from you. “I’ll do it all again. Are you really okay with that?”You bring a hand to her head, gently untangling out her bed hair with slow strokes. You joke, “If I’m not lying, it is a kind of a pain.” She looks up to face you, mostly in surprise. “But that doesn’t mean I’m going to abandon you, okay?”Her eyes water, and she rubs her eyes with her sleeve. Sniffling she asks, “Promise?”She sticks out her little finger and you breathe out harder than usual. “Promise,” you say, hooking hers with yours to return the gesture. The cold breeze sweeps through the open window, blowing the curtains. The momentary silence that follows is more relieving than it expected, a great weight lifted off your shoulders and Kaede’s.Both of you hold onto it for a little longer before she whispers to you, “Sorry I’m such a handful.”
Hey, thanks for playing and reading. I'll make a new thread on friday or saturday or something since I'm out of pictures. It'll probably be the last thread since there was just that one bad end. It's basically a oneshot but that's the only way I can make sure I don't flake

>>4207768Thanks for running!Cute quest. Ended up wanting more but we’ll take what we can get!
This was a enjoyable quest. Good work. Also wanted a lil more
A shame your quest was full of either edgy retards, or one samefagging edgy retard.
In lieu of silently vanishing forever when I can’t figure out how to do a second thread, I wrote an ending instead. Sorry, and thanks.
A few weeks later, you’re standing outside the kitchen, watching nervously as Kaede turns on the stove. She’s gotten a lot of practice, and by now she accumulated more cuts on her hand than you remember, but she seems to be confident in herself now. You observe as she pours some oil onto the pan and tosses in the diced onions. It sizzles as it makes contact, and she pushes them around a bit before deciding to toss in the meat.Halfway through, she takes a spoon to the soup she’s making on the side and takes a sip.“Hmm,” she hums, “Does this need a bit more salt?”This time, Kaede scoops up a bit more, blows on it, and holds it out for you. You taste it as her ears twitch, and you reply, “It’s good.” She stares at the spoon for a little while before stiffly nodding and going back. The next few moments were probably more nervous for you than for her, but sure enough she finishes up without injuring herself. She plates everything quickly on the kitchen counter, and after she places the pan back, she cheers. “I did it!”You walk over and mess up her hair with your hand. “Good job,” you tell her, “I knew you could do it.”“Heheh.” She rubs her nose and tries to hold back her grin. “Let’s eat breakfast already,” she says, grabbing one of the dishes. She begins to leave but immediately trips over herself. You move, noticing in time, balancing her with one arm and stabilizing the plate with the other.“Are you okay?” you ask as her face reddens from embarrassment. She awkwardly nods, and you let go as she regains balance.___________
>>4218634After eating, you open your wardrobe to see what you can wear. It isn’t exactly as if you’re nervous for this, because after all, you don’t have a reason to be. You’re just taking her out shopping for more clothes for her. Fighting back indecision, you pick your favorite jacket and a pair of pants that’s least terrible with it.When you leave your room, you find Kaede impatiently waiting for you on the couch. She’s trying really hard not to seem as if she cares, but her tail and ears give it away. “Jeez, I thought only girls took that long.”“It was a few minutes!” you reply, sighing as you leave with her behind. Just as you’re about to get the leash, she grabs your arm and tilts her head down to look up at you.“Come on, I won’t do anything dangerous.”“Don’t do that with me,” you reply, lightly karate-chopping her head. The catgirl winces in faux pain and you relent. “Fine, but don’t make me regret it.”Kaede brightly smiles. “I won’t!”You’re soon out the door and walking down the streets, and before you know it, you’re at the store with Kaede eager to run inside. It’s a small place but you’re sure it’s enough. When you enter, one of the workers greets the two of you.Only a few steps behind Kaede, you follow her as she ogles at everything she passes. She stops at a mannequin at some point, snickering at the weird pose it has. At some point, she finds shelves full of weird shirts, and picking up one of them, she drapes it in front of herself to show it off. It features a drawn image of someone surrounded by humongous fish and is hugging one.She asks, “Does it suit me?”“I thought you didn’t have an opinion on fish.”“I didn’t. Wow, you’re really racist, aren’t you?” she replies with a jibe.“Hush.”Kaede then goes on to examine significantly less weird things, and you stop when she goes inside the changing room. You wait outside for a little while, wondering what her fashion sense is like. You’re not going to be the one dressing her: you barely have any idea on what you’re doing yourself.Soon enough she comes out in a sundress, spinning around to show it off to you. Wordlessly she asks for your opinion.“You do realize it’s not summer yet, right?”She puffs her cheeks, trying to not get mad. “That’s not the point.”“It looks cute on you,” you reply. Kaede’s expression brightens with a splash of red on her cheeks before going back to change. Next time, she tries on a sweater, jacket, cardigan, and a few shirts, all of which you reply, “It looks cute.”After the sixth go, she slumps her shoulders. “You always say the same thing...”
>>4218635By now, the two of you have spent quite a while in here. So much so that your legs are starting to get tired and you’ve started to sit down on a small chair nearby.“Sorry, I’m not good with this stuff.” You shyly rub the back of your neck. “Well, you look cute in anything, so I don’t think it’ll be a problem.”Hearing that, she grabs her arm with one hand and covers her face with another. “How... how can you say that so casually...?”Not knowing what to answer but unwilling to stand there in awkward silence, you try to come up with a reply before her stomach growls. “So soon?” you ask as her face reddens for another reason. “Let’s get what you want and then grab lunch.”She nods. “Y-yeah.”Soon, you leave with a bag in each hand, feeling a little sorry for your wallet. You look over to Kaede and see her beaming, finding that you don’t regret it at all. And not even a minute passes by that she points to a crepe stand. She asks you, “H-how about that?” she asksAnd you reply, “Sure.” You maneuver out your wallet and pull out a bit of cash to give her. “Take your pick. I’m fine with anything.”Nodding, she heads off, walking as fast as she inconspicuously can.You wait for her, watching as she goes over the menu. Suddenly, someone grabs your shoulders from behind you.“Boo!” Rina says as you jump. You shoot her an annoyed glare and she laughs it off. “Surprised you, didn’t I?”“Hey,” you greet her, “What are you up to here?”“Nothing~,” she replies, her hands going behind her back as she tells you, “Sooo, what’s going on? Is that a date I see?”“Is that what it looks like? You’re acting really suspicious today.”Rina exaggerates as she places a hand on her temple. “You’re clueless, huh?” She checks your silent reply and then adds, “Well, you’re no fun today. Don’t forget, she’s a catgirl, you know?”“Uh...? Okay?”Her expression softens. “I won’t say I’m not at least a little bitter, but... as long as you’re happy.”“You know my reply. I’ll figure something out, hm?”“Of course you do.” She notices Kaede starting to return and tells you, “I won’t bother you any longer,” she quickly says, “Bye!”“Wait, you still-“ You try to stop her but trail off as she hurries away. You still didn’t know why she was here, but you guess she just happened to bump into you.As Kaede hurries over, she points to a bench nearby. “What are you doing, put your stuff down already!”“Fine, fine.”The two of you sit down, people passing by and going on with their day. You place down your bags and Kaede hands you one of the crepes, one with cinnamon and chocolate. The one she got for herself has strawberries, you clearly notice.
>>4218638She takes a bite out of hers and you try yours. She mumbles, “It’s so good!”The flavors swirl inside your mouth and you quickly take another bite. “Mine too. This was a really nice pick.”“Really?” she asks. “Then, let me try.” Before you can react, Kaede leans in and takes a bite out of yours, smiling in self-satisfaction. “Wow, that is good...” Then, she puts hers out. “H-Here.”You breathe hard out your nose and follow through. It’s sweet and the strawberries are a little sour. You make sure your mouth is empty before telling her, “Are you thinking I wouldn’t catch on?”Her tail shoots up as she nervously asks, “What do you mean?”“Then,” you say, “How about this?”You take a bite, and without any warning, you lift up Kaede with a hand on her chin. You lean in, and she blushes as she tastes the crepe. She pulls away in shock and covers her face with a hand. She stammers, “W-Wh-W-What are you doing?!”Laughing, you ask, “It wasn’t bad, was it?”“...Shut up.”The End
