It is April, 2248
For the past 7 years human space has been at war, most of its factions standing in a United Front against the Black Sun Reich, a reborn relic of a past age. After many battles, the Reich's forces have been cornered in the Valhalla system. The other members of the United Front are in agreement that they wish to deal the deathblow within the coming months, to end the war before Christmas.

You are the leaders of the Extrasolar Free State - industrialists, researchers, pioneers - free men and women whose word holds sway over the course of this nation. The population of your nation has exploded in recent times, quadrupling over the last decade due to the influx of immigrants from Earth, primarily people from the ashes of the once great United States of America. Your involvement in the war against the Black Sun has seen the space fleet take many losses, yet a grinding, slow progress is being made and the prospect of its

The last thread was a bit of a sham as I could only do a few turns, but this time we'll SURGE!

How it's played, in short:
Anyone can vote on national issues, every turn(lasting 9 months) and whenever there is a prompt. You can propose ideas, seek support for yours, tell everyone why that guy's plan is bonkers and would bankrupt the nation. You can go a step further by playing as a faction within the nation - an organisation with assets and agendas of its own. Expand your power and influence within the nation whilst also shaping its future development, create coalitions, pursue private projects, develop characters that represent your faction - the sky is no longer the limit!

The last action you performed was the establishment of a professional army. Most of the forces set to be raised are still in training, with the goal being 5 army and 1 marine regiments.

As is known, some time ago an expedition of ours encountered some alien fellows, exchanging gifts and information.
Let us send a proper formal delegation to them, setting up an embassy and opening talks regarding trade as well as the possibility of establishing mutual language and culture exchange centers.

Begin the terrafromation of Dagda and New Perth.
Dagda is our third largest colony and has yet to receive even level 1 terraforming, while New Perth should be upgraded finally with level 2.
This will allow for even more settlers on these worlds and due to advances in terraforming technology, the time needed to do the task should be less than expected.

The EFS has been recognized by many as being perhaps having the best experts within the field of terraformation in human space. A new, major government project will see even further investment into the improvement of New Perth and Dagda. 100 production will be the current investment per turn on the project, with 1500 being the goal - at 500 Dagda will reach stage 1, at 800 New Perth will reach stage 2 - if we go for balanced investment. If you wish to prioritize one over the other, you may vote to do so and it will not require a full turn.

It is now August. UFHQ is calling for all forces to assemble at the Eisenherz system, the forward operating base for the fleets at the front.

Discuss your plan for involvement and proceding. By August only about 4 battalions of troops will be fully ready to fight, 2 more could be rushed if need be. The fleet you have is as listed in the pastebin.

Also decide on how you would like to conduct the Battle for Valhalla from a meta perspective - would you like it to be done on a more strategic, grand overview perspective - which would make it pass a bit faster - or on a closer, more tactical scale, with more possibilities for personal involvement of characters, specific actions etc. - which will mean more time spent.

Discuss these two matters and give some votes on it generally and when there's some broad agreement we'll begin.

You could also always just not send forces if you don't feel like it.

A strike force of 4 frigates, 4 corvettes, 2 carriers and the heavy cruiser EFSS Connie will be sent. The grand fleet of the United Front is gathered on the 18th of September in Eisenherz, preparing to jump to Valhalla. The general plan is to approach the planet of Asgard with caution, secure any space satellites, the orbit of the planet and then proceed according as the situation has developed. Intel, including photography, has shown that it is indeed a verdant, highly habitable world - some in HQ are very much against harming the planet itself, though a few of the more fervent, especially among the younger officers of the ICS, say that "No weapon should be off limits for the completion of the task."

Make strategic suggestions and mention any private forces or characters you're sending. I'm writing down some notes now and in a few minutes the battle for the system will begin.
>>
>>4228057
The cult sends both mentats, cyberaiders and whatever sardaukar that's left, all of these stuffed onto the Connie together with admiral Antares.

As for strategy, we being the lesser contributor to the offensive we're gonna have to follow the battleplan put forward by our friends (but we'll politely decline suicide postings obviously).
>>
>>4228057
We should be wary of them pulling that jump maneuver again since we will be entering their home system. A section of forces should be at the ready to quickly reposition for countering such moves.I suggest the Free state navy and part of the ICS be on given this role.

While we cant properly get into their com network we can try to track the chatter between their various positions if we pick it up in an attempt to try and predict any reich fleet movements.

Send two dozen Rangers to deal with any boarding actions or ground ops.
>>
>>4228057

Juliet Vow will be captain of a frigate ship

Our forces are limited and we have lost much, so we should stay behind our allies in the space battle. Securing vulnerable spots, but not putting ourselves in the main line of fire.

Strategically valuable positions should be bombarded and then troops deployed, establishing and deeply entrenching beachheads, from which they'll then proceed to liberate the planet.

The CSP will send the team of our robotics control specialists that already helped with the last ground invasion and a private platoon of Freedombots. Their focus will be to provide electronic warfare support, coordinate and optimize the operations of robotic forces both our own and allied, and lastly to gather combat data to improve our bots based upon in the future.

2.10.2248 - the fleet exits hyperspace into the Valhalla system. Readings immediately pick up the movement of ships in the area of space around the planet of Asgard. Numerous satellites of various sizes orbit the planet, with another lesser planet closer to our entry point also having an orbiting station. Securing that location is the first objective that command has given.

EFS and Pavonid forces have been assigned rear guard duty.A number of support ships, including our own Eveline, acccompany the fleet as its lifeline.

A series of long-distance messages are sent out from the fleet towards all in the system - an offer of surrender. Only one reply is received, coming from Asgard:
"Kapitulieren? Niemals!."
What will your tactical focus be aimed at during the outer system phase of this operation? Stick tightly to formation, spread out, look for any specific threat or opportunity? The Staff (You) may deliberate this, thugh Admiral Antares has the final say.

Concentrated formation focused on rapid response to enemy surprise maneuvers it is.

A day passes in transit. As we near the outpost planet and forward units begin probing the station and preparing to board it, the fleet is slowing down again after having so far traveled at cruise speed. Movement is detected by long-range scanners from the enemy's primary cluster of ships and as battle readiness across the United forces is being synchronized, close-range readings report that now numerous ships have suddenly jumped into space near us, practically in close combat range!

It's a strike aimed at our supply ships, but the fact that some in our staff had put this forward as a possible scenario allowed us to be relatively ready for it:

Meant to ask for four rolls, so it's a 3/4 in total actually.

A force of frigates and corvettes, led by a single destroyer around which they'd clusered, jumped into our quadrant and attempted to rapidly strike at our auxiliary ships. Quick action from our behalf was able to largely combat this, though not without some casualties - a few of the less-protected supply vessels, one of our corvettes, one Pavonid frigate and several fighters.
It appears to have been a desparate attempt at staggering our fleet that in the end merely delays it by several hours while the formation reorganizes and hull damage is repaired.

The outpost and the planet have both been secured by the end of the 4th. They appear to have been used for mining, military testing and storage purposes - with fairly large facilities made for the refinement and storage of volatiles and hyperfuel in particular being discovered. Curiously, all personnel on the outpost fought to the death or committed suicide.

The fleet moves once more now, towards Asgard itself. Sublight travel will take five days to reach the planet.

The decisive battle is now at hand. On the 8th of October the fleet begins to slow down as it prepares for long distance combat and adjusts to combat maneuvering speeds.

The United Front brings a truly massive force of fighting ships to this battle - a total of:
24 corvettes
48 frigates
22 destroyers
10 cruisers
3 carriers

Opposing us are far fewer vessels, barely a fifth the number in ships and even less in tonnage. We do detect a network of defensive satellites around the terrestrial planet and its moon, however.

A command conference for the UF is called. It seems HQ is actually somewhat split in opinions - about half believe that we should engage in a siege, engaging in long-range bombardment for a prolonged time to whittle the enemy down; Others believe we should engage in an all-out attack with full force. Both sides bring up the potential danger of the unknown "Wonder weapon" - some say it is likely a large orbital cannon that would pick away at our ships in a prolonged engagements; Others think it is linked to their satellite network and would deflect any close-range attacks we attempt.

The opinion of the leaders of the Pavonid Union and Extrasolar Free State are, for a change, actually going to be key factors in the decision now as eyes slowly drift towards you.

In response to our siege, the Black Sun fleet moves to what is initially the opposite side of the planet, to put it between us and them. They leave its gravitational well, most likely, as they attempt two more jump-strikes, one seeing them lose most of their striking force, the other being mildly successful as they deal a blow to Syndicate siege lines. Our attacks on their fixed positions, however, are producing an effect as one by one they are blown apart in a large section of the planet's orbit, now open for assaults.
On the 13th of October, however, a strange incident occurs. Several frigates of the EU strike force fire upon Asian League cruisers, destroying not just any ship, but the old pride itself - the Chiang Kai Shek! Communication attempts with these rogue frigates only receive gibberish in responce, alongside an odd soundbite of a question:
"Do you really want total war?"
After further refusing to cease their attacks (and crippling several destroyers, another cruiser and blowing two more frigates away) the three new, state-of-the-art frigates are destroyed by return fire. Confusion arises in command as accusations begin to be hurled, lasting several hours until the incident repeats once more, albeit in a different sector of the fleet - this time League vessels open fire on Syndicate ships ending in a similar fashion.
Around the turn of the day, as Sol Standard time enters the 14th, sensors pick up serious movement once more - the Reichsflotte in all its force has jumped once more into close combat range, while several of the more mobile defense satellites appear to be maneuvering across the planetary orbit to enter firing range soon.

The besieged have sallied forth to attempt a last-ditch counterattack, it would seem. We must nip it in the bud - battle stations!

Another group of League frigates turn on their friendlies, who in turn are the primary target of the Black Sun blitz attack - heavy casualties are quickly dealt to their force, while most others seem to hold their own ground adequately. Our fleet loses a frigate and a corvette and the Connie suffers minor hull damage, but we're able to get our bearings and establish comm lines once more, the element of surprise now being lost to the enemy - from what our data analysis is showing, they are trying to inflict as many casualties as possible without commiting to a prolonged engagement, however. Whether we can wipe them out now or merely manage to preserve our own forces will be up to our performance now.

The Admiral may set tactical directives if he sees it fit.

Skilled micro-managing and coordination between our officers sees our fleet take up positions that allow it to deal great amounts of damage to the passing by enemy ships, most of whom avoid attacking us much as they instead focus on their breakout - as we predicted their vector of movement, we were never in their path to begin with, but they were in ours. Combat data was transmitted to allied commanders and some were able to adapt to it in turn. At the end of two hours of bloody fighting, a mere husk of the Reich's force is all that escapes and heads for the planet's orbit, limping away now decisively too exhausted to engage in any pitched battle.

A roll call establishes that the ships capable of still operating are down to the following count:

15 corvettes
25 frigates
15 destroyers
8 cruisers
3 carriers

Our own strike force has mostly lost fighter craft and had damaged ships, only losing 2 corvettes and 1 frigate completely during the battle so far.

While damage assessment and regrouping is still happening, though, short-range sensors aboard the EFSS Connie report something strange. Our flagship has greatly slowed down, almost having halted, as it is undergroing repairs - yet it seems there is a destroyer-class ship bearing straight for it on collision course. IFF indicates it belongs to the Asian League fleet, but it is not responding to any hails. Its engines aren't unresponsive though as it is adjusting its course to keep up with our slow movements too. HQ is saying they can't get a hold of that ship either.

The pods had killed several crewmembers upon breaching and other corpses had already been discovered to be dead, mostly killed by gunshots even before we boarded - but of those who remained, some 70-odd crewmembers, all fought against our marines - and fought fiercely they did. Thankfully, the small arms most of them had as personal defense weapons fared poorly against the quality equipment our marines were bringing, but there were casualties nevertheless. The Busan's crew threw themselves with little care for their own safety, screaming as they went, evidently afflicted with some madness.
Across about half an hour of combat the ship was secured. 65 of the crew were killed against 7 dead and several wounded marines. 7 captives are taken to be studied.
Theories buzz around high command as to what exactly this is and whether it is the same thing that caused the other friendly fire incidents, rather than espionage or hacking.

As the Siege of Valhalla continues, questions remain that will be answered next time.

The incident with the ALS Busan would not repeat again - or at least it hasn't happened to any other ship in our fleet in the past two days since the fighting in space ended. This time has been used to repair damaged ships, restock on fuel and ammunition as much as possible as long-distance bombardment of orbital emplacements continues. Return fire keeps those ships on the front at their toes, however, with large kinetic guns opening up on the besieging fleet - including, most recently, emplacements on the planetary surface itself. These have proved dangerous for slower ships mostly, as with sufficient scanning a more nimble ship can often maneuver out of the way of a slug, but it took several Syndicate missile destroyers being picked off until the United force began adapting a bit more to this.

A debate is now underway in Headquarters - how to proceed from here on. The Black Sun's capacity to wage war in space is almost entirely wiped out - some ships returned to the surface of the planet, while a small splinter force has left the system by now.

Some of the leaderls, chiefly the ICS' Admiral Hernandez, propose that we simply wipe the Black Sun off the face of the planet - using orbital bombardment, including nuclear weapons, to flatten the resistance and only then perhaps proceeding with limited ground attacks to mop up what's left.

The Asian League's Admiral Rajanoul supports only limited, tactical orbital bombardments and a more planned out, methodic ground invasion, citing the fact that the planet is a class V world and that scarring it with saturated bombardment would be a great waste, not to mention the civilians.

The mention of civilians is met with a sneer by some officers.

The Pavonid government representatives present believe we could try negotiations and the establishment of a blockade at a distance that would allow more safety from the surface defense systems.

This debate calls in the opinions of political representatives as well as military officers, as the former claim that it is now not just a matter of tactics, but also general direction for ending the war.

What side of the debate, if any, do you support?

We support a combination of the Asian League and Pavonid proposals. Levelling the surface with WMDs is a wholly unacceptable proposal. While the actions and beliefs of our foe are certainly despicable and heinous in every way imaginable, we must be above such things. We have a responsibility to future generations to rise above the continued mistakes of the past and end this war in a responsible manner, not with more needless bloodshed and the destruction of such a rare and important world. Therefore, we support attempting to negotiate a surrender of the enemy before proceeding with limited, tactical bombardments and a planned out ground invasion should such negotiations fail.
>>
>>4241423
The Leagues approach is the most beneficial to us. This is a tworld we cannot let be despoiled by mass bombardment. Taking it would be invaluable to humanity.
There's also no telling if the Reich has anything worth taking once the war as a whole has ended. Maybe information leading to hidden bases that holdouts may attack from or research bases.
>>
>>4241423
Tactical bombardment followed by invasion, as suggested by AL's admiral rajanoul, is by far the most sensible approach.

Genocide and the destruction of an inhabitable world is unacceptable, and the only form of negotiations acceptable is one initiated by unconditional surrender by the enemy.

With a consensus of voices from the Extrasolar Free State supporting a more humane approach, Asgard's siege continues. As our ships move into position once more, long-range communications are attempted and, after a few hours, we do get a response from someone down on Asgard.

They identify themselves as a group of officers and leaders of an opposition group that has made contact with agents sent in advance - largely by our ESIA, but also some from other nations - for the purpose of a planned coup. These officers believe that there is no more reason for the Reich to continue aggressive warfare, but nevertheless wish to preserve Asgard as a free world for the greater part of its populace who they claim are good, honest people who deserve the right to rule themselves in peace. According to these conspiring officers, the Great Leader of the Reich and his inner circle are firmly against any negotiations and attempts to surrender and would rather see the world burn than give it up.

The conspirators say that they would be willing to strike a deal - work together to overthrow the Great Leader and his inner circle, let a new regime rise and sign peace, allowing the Reich to retain its control over the Valhalla system and a zone of five parsecs around it, surrendering the rest of their territory up and ending their ambitions for space domination.

As for their plan, they say that it would hinge on our large force providing a distraction that directs the attention of the Great Leader to a specific battlezone while the axe falls to cut off the head of the beast.

Opinions on this are mixed in HQ. As EFS agents were largely involved in this, as it would seem, your opinion is being considered once more - should we try to work with these conspirators to let them assume power or not? Some of the officers in HQ seem to support working with them, though perhaps doing it "Tactically" so to speak.

What say you?

The prospect of a swifter end to this conflict has the support of most in the HQ and so the Valkyrie Plan is launched.

The plan will involve a supply drop for the insurgents and our agents, a maneuver in space, close-range bombardment on some defensive installations and the initialization of a ground assault that would draw out forces that would otherwise be protecting the Leader's secret fortress, we are told.

To that end, give me four rolls, these aren't necessarily just for the EFS, but for the United fleet and the operation in general.

Betrayal within betrayal foiled the operation - the plans were revealed and the internal security forces of the Reich were able to apprehend - and promptly execute - many of the conspirators, while the fleet maneuvers resulted in casualties beyond what was expected. This has shown that there were elements of disunity within the Reich that sabotage its workings, but not enough to overthrow their leaders yet.

A message from our agents on the ground seems to indicate there has been a response overall - now the propaganda machine is in full swing as the invasion of the planet is shown to its populace to be a matter of life and death for all in an attempt to rouse them to resistance.

UFHQ has decided that we're in too deep to give up at this point - the invasion will commence. Key points across the surface that must be secured are the surface defence nexus with its large batteries that continue to fire upon our ships in orbit; the primary spaceport at Führershafen and other hubs of transport and communication. If we can secure complete orbital supremacy we can then move forces around far faster than the defenders can on the ground, allowing us to focus our theoretically smaller force in terms of pure troop numbers wherever it's actually needed, while the enemy is unable to keep up - this is the outline presented by General Sun Tsiang, at the head of the League's Ground Strike Force that brings 30 000 troops to the invasion and with more on the way now that access to the system is secure.

An initial beachhead is established within the first day and a half of the fighting, but too many forces were focused on one location and the drops were predictable enough that the ground forces - superior in numbers, their knowledge of the terrain and the availability of heavier hardware - were able to respond in quick order to landings. Casualties among the army forces of the League and Syndicate quickly climb into the many thousands. The first strikes on the major population hubs are a failure and now the fighting is relegated to the outlands - the planet isn't small, which means that like most human colonies much of it is barely populated - villages with beautiful scenery dot the landscape of rural Asgard, nestled in mountain valleys and along great forests, the northern hemisphere's seasons being fairly aligned to those on Earth as it is now fall. The local flora and fauna appears to have been imported from Earth by some means and the whole world, on the ground, is impressive, a near-perfect, even idealized reconstruction of a near-forgotten version of the homeworld.

Our army forces disembark in a landing zone in a rural region several hundred kilometers away to the north from the capital hub. The goal at hand now is to establish forward operating bases from which to repel any counter-attacks, learn more about the planet and the enemy's ground capabilities, use air superiority and tactical bombardment to keep on whittling their forces down while more of our own reinforcements, now in transit from Sol, are set to arrive, bringing in the heavier guns too.

To that end, the EFS forces are tasked with securing a small nearby town on strategic ground as a base for operations. Our army is now going to have its first taste of ground action.

Per the latest military reforms, the Solar Marshall has overall command over these forces. You've sent five batallions of colonial infantry, fresh out of boot camp for most of them - though of course they've all had some prior militia training as well.

How do you think this operation should be executed? It's expected that you'll encounter civilians, possibly a small garrison force or militia and potentially if the Reich has time to respond - regular army reinforcements, though it is hoped that most of those are occupied along other fronts and hotzones, as the plan right now is focused on precisely that - using multiple landing zones to split the enemy's attention up, never allowing them to bring us to a single decisive land battle.

A.Go in guns blazing, anybody who doesn't give up or hide in their homes immediately is treated as a combatant, strict military occupation
B.Besiege them, enage at a long range if need be until they surrender
C.Try negotiations
D.Wipe the locals out entirely, we need the location, not the people.

The town surrenders, representatives of the population coming out to negotiate their terms. The garrison had left on the previous day, it seems, with only one old soldier remaining behind. As our forces entered the town, that old man started shooting from the second story of a house, resulting in half an hour of combat, one of our soldiers dead and several wounded. The locals begged that we not destroy that house and seeing as there was only one enemy an attempt was made to breach and secure it quickly, but it turned out to be rigged with a number of traps that slowed our men down, with the old soldier eventually running out of ammo, the last bullet going through his own head a moment after one of our infantrymen burst through the door.

The small town of Witzbach is secured, its specialties being forestry, animal husbandry, meat processing and the managing of nearby hunting grounds (in which several well furnished villas belonging to of high-ranking Reich officials are found).
The populace are rather frightened of our invading forces. Said populace is made up almost entirely of women, the old, infirm and the very young as almost all men have been drafted and sent off somewhere.

Communications from other landing zones indicate that the second phase of the operation is going well. Air superiority is now coming into play, allowing big blows to be dealt to the enemy on the ground, though in their major hubs the anti-air and anti-orbital defenses are still online, our strategy is forcing them to concede the territories beyond those few cities for the most part.

While the tactical objective is accomplished, your strategic goal remains - keep the region secure, establish an FOB, ensure that further reinforcements and supplies can flow in safely and be put into action for the third phase of the invasion.
You have five battalions of infantry, 2500 fighting men and women, deployed here. You have some, mostly light vehicles at your disposal, but can also call upon on ship support both as bombardment, close air support and transport, though the capacity at which your force may be served might vary depending on the needs of other fronts.
The forests and nearby mountains have smaller hamlets and provincial homes, including a base of some sort at a higher point in those mountains. To the south the terrain clears out into grasslands covered with farms, with one notable military installation between here and the capital hub city, roughly halfway inbetween. Its defense installations have been a nuisance to us so far, establishing something close to a no-fly zone.Orbital bombardments on that site haven't been enough to remove its presence for whatever reason, so sooner or later it will have to be taken on the ground - or heavier ordnance will have to be used.

What do you plan on doing? It's expected that reinforcements will need a few more weeks to arrive. Feel free to ask any questions pertaining to the situation, meanwhile.

The mIlitary base will need to be captured for us to advanced swiftly.
Its most likely got a force capable of giving us trouble so i suggest we continue dig in here so we have a secure landing zone and bring in heavier firepower to break open the base to the south.

In the meantime while thats happening we should send a team to the mountain base to get an idea of weather it can launch any serious counter attacks on our landing zone.

The mountain base was, at first glance, a resort - featuring trails for hiking, facilities and terrain for winter sports and a nearby mineral bath. It was nearly abandoned, just a few older women being left tending to the grounds, yet a second look and some sniffing about have also revealed an access point to a hidden underground base. Breaching and entering, the scouts encounter some resistance, but manage to clear it after calling for some quick reinforcements to be sent over by air. The underground military base holds weapon stocks, deployble aerial defense weaponry and tunnels that lead to an unknown destintion - not deeper underground, but running parallel to the surface in a southeasterly direction. In these tunnels are magrail tracks, though no trains are stopped at the station itself.

There is little time for the scouts to further explore these tunnels, however. Five days into the occupation of Witzleben, as a sloppy construction effort is ongoing, fogs and then storms roll in, weather that makes aerial support difficult. During the night, the rolling thunder in the skies is joined by its counterpart on the ground - mortars opening up on our positions, immediately followed by the sound of vehicle engines approaching - signalling the beginning of an enemy counter attack!

It's a ground battle now. Your forces are deployed on a defensive perimeter around the town, holding position across it.

Enemy light artillery deals heavy blows to your outer perimeter, forcing you into the secondary line of defense. Your APCs are sent out to attempt a flanking maneuver on the enemy, but they instead encounter their own heavy armor, thickly armored and big-gunned, which rips our own vehicles apart within minutes of engaging.

Now having the advantage of mobility and maintaining initiative on their side, the enemy are launching probing attacks on different points of your perimeter, likely trying to test for weakness. Your losses already amount to nearly a quarter of the total force being wounded or killed.

By the sound of it, the heavy armor's approaching now. Survivors of the vehicle engagement report only one shred of good news - said enemy armor is only a few vehicles in total, fewer than a dozen.

Our infantry is taking a beating on the flanks, but a good development does occur - the Marshal's plan works out well enough at least, with our heavy freedombots all being arrayed in one point along the main town road. As one of our squads withdrawls and draws the enemy walkers into the line of fire, several of their number are quickly dispatched by the freedombots, giving us at least some respite.

Communications are experiencing trouble because of the poor weather conditions. Someone will have to get to work on that, but the attack hasn't completely subsided, though their armor is regrouping. Casualties on your side are at nearly 1/3 dead or wounded.

The commander can set tactical objectives within a battle. These will be for the coming round when he does so - they will have their own DCs that can be lower or higher than the overall battle DC.

4/4 - the objective roll will always be separate and not taken as a general battle roll

Once again, the enemy attempted a push with their walkers and were again repulsed by our bots. Their armor is out of the picture now, but infantry and support weapons still pose a threat.
A lull in the fighting has formed.as the enemy pulls back to their initial positions. The storm, however, hasn't stopped, even as some semblance of sunlight peers out from beyond the dark clouds, indicating that it is now morning. This temporary pause gives you some options - you can attempt to evacuate or keep holding position and trying to call in reinforcements. The Marshall will decide, but battle rolls will be needed regardless. Some baisc medical facilities have been established in the town, alongside its own clinic, which allows the medics in the force to treat the many wounded - the ratio of wounded to dead is around 3:1

2 Tactical Objectives currently:
1.Restore communications
2.Organize medical treatment

Casualties since the start of the battle are roughly the same for both sides, at around 40% of their total combat capacity.

I await Objective and general battle rolls, as well as the Marshal's orders - to evacuate or to hold positions.

"Enemy counterattack, ongoing [garbled]. Need immediate air support on these coordinates..."

"Affirmative, looks like you need something that won't kill you in the same blast. Transmitting these coordinates to ICS missile destroyer Tunguska with instructions."

About 7 minutes later, a dozen tactical missile strikes rain down on the area outside the town, in particular the enemy's artillery positions. With their support weapons and armor lost, their remaining infantry pulls out soon out of the Witzleben area.

A day later, the weather clears enough for close air support to arrive and further secure the FOB against another attempted counterattack. Around 300 men died and twice that many were wounded over the course of the battle, but most of those will be back in fighting shape soon enough.

As shuttles and dropships were ferrying supplies down and carrying wounded back up into low orbit, Black Sun fighters attacked, their speed and maneuverability more suited to fighting within the planet's skies than larger ships. For several key hours, the enemy regained aerial superiority and launched another counterattack on Witzleben, which pushed us out of the town - bombing runs on the original landing zone to the north had destroyed our docked shuttles there as well and so our ground forces find themselves completely cut off and beating a bloodied retreat to the only place left - the base in the mountains. The troops being in desperate need of reinforcements, communications with other allied forces on the ground are attempted. The Asian League's army in the east appears to be engaged in a losing battle against a large local force, similarly pushed back to reserve positions like we are. The ICS to our southwest, on the other hand, are faring better, while the Pavonid and EU forces far to the south are also holding their own FOB.

Reinforcements from space draw near, but the next few days will be crucial if our ground forces are to survive this operation at all.
>>
November 20th
Back in orbit, fleet command is reviewing reports coming in from across the various ground fronts. The invasion is going somewhat worse than planned, it would seem. Skepticism is beginning to creep in among the staff. The desire for a quick victory before Christmas might not be met, unless some miracle victory is won within the next 30 days. Transport ships bearing tens of thousands of new troops will join the fleet tomorrow and begin disembarking the day after. Most seem to pin their hopes on this new wave, along with more focused air support and adapted tactics, though the plans given are somewhat vague. One camp wishes to engage in a decisive open battle where our air superiority can sweep the foe away, whilst another believes in a siege tactic on the ground, stating that we can keep reinforcing more and more, whilst the enemy only weakens with time.
There are once more voices being raised that this whole operation was a mistake from the start. The word "Glassing" is being mentioned more and more often.

What opinion do you, as leaders of the EFS forces and government representatives, present?

A.Pool what we have for one decisive strike, we can't keep dragging this out
B.If it has to take longer, let it - slow and steady wins the race
C.Abandon the ground invasion, begin evacuating our forces

Historical records seem to suggest that during previous earthen conflicts with the Nazis, they failed to acheive victory over Soviet forces due to their inability to match them in a war of attrition. If we can keep up the pressure on major startegic targets via airstrike. the enemy's capacity to hold out against us will be eliminated, and victory assured.

I believe there is another way to win this. If there are more of tunnels beneath asgards soil like we found at the mountain base then perhaps we can use them to infiltrate the Reich facilities and disable some of the anti orbital defenses or other strategic targets. Thus allowing us to close in on the capital and end this war faster.

Back on the surface, it has been over a full day of moving across the forests, another day and a half of hiking up the trails, all while being harassed along the way. Landing parties, including reinforcements from private EFS forces and a detachment of the marine corps sent to help protect observers, descended on the 25th to the site where the last communication from the army was received. The reports that were coming in claimed that they were under siege, that some of the locals turned against them and that there were traps in some of the homes - that Black Sun forces were waiting for them in the tunnels and that they'd activated some sort of defense system.

Direct communication became choppy at 0800. A distress beacon was lit up and the shuttles bearing reinforcements aimed for it. A single transmission only managed to get through as they were already in sight of the area - "Position compromised. Beacon captured, trap, AA deployrd, avoid. Search for-"

As the shuttles scrambled, one was still blasted apart by a cannon on the surface, but warning sent managed to save many others. Our forces deployed in surrounding forest areas and performed a search and rescue operation that eventually found the last group of survivors, along with the recovery of numerous corpses. The survivors claimed that Commander Ralph Calibas held onto the last communications hub for as long as possible before ordering them to escape. He couldn't stop the beacon itself, but the message sent out was from him.

The survivors and the reinforcements evacuate to orbit. We are largely unable to maintain any significant ground presence at this point and the slog across all fronts drags on not just beyond November, but also past Christmas ant into the new year.

Asgard's siege continues, while old rumors resurface with new raw footage to back the claims up - of the incursion of alien ships into human space, to be more precise - into the sector of space under corporate cartel rule. These reports still show only "Small" groups of the strange vessels rather than any one major invasion, but pessimists now call this a "Probe" while optimists marvel at the prospect of true contact with the aliens in our own space now. No official news from any government entity has come out of this yet, though one thing is clear - the isolation of human space is likely about to end one way or another, regardless of what may happen in Valhalla.
