In a sea of roiling phase-matter, creatures labelled as Spectral Entities (SE) vy for dominance. The SEs battle endlessly, hunting each other through an endless void and consuming the ectoplasm that falls from above. It's an entropic existence, with little variation between species. That is, until, an event known as 'The Tear' occured.

Three holes in the void were ripped open, allowing SEs to wander through for limited periods. There, the massless wisps encountered a wondrous world, far beyond their primitive comprehension. The world was smooth, even, structured, nothing like the timeless, formless sea that they formerly swam through. The SEs quickly found that they were not alone in their new environment. Limbed creatures wandered this euclidean plane, moving with far more force and intent than the creatures were capable of displaying.

There on modern-day Earth, cut off from most of their ilk, the SEs tapped into a vast, ceaseless network. The primitive spectres had their minds slowly flooded with understanding, and they quaked in wonder at the vast extent of this civilisation. They learnt of what made these Humans tick, what lurked beneath the surface, what traditions, myths, and habits were spread out in the collective mind-network of Humanity. And from this newfound understanding, they learned how to prey on this wondrous species.

> Welcome to Ghost Evo! This is a sort of experimental EVO game, and the first one I'm running as a QM. The gist of it is that this Evo is a bit more abstract than Biology-based Evos. Our three starters are 'Spectral Entities'. Ghosts, essentially, that have crossed over to Earth from their own dimension. There, their abstract existences have been given insight into the Collective Unconscious of Humanity, and how to sustain themselves on fear.

> Two Ecosystems exist in this RP. The first is the Spectral Sea, where the SEs hunt each other down and consume their phase-matter. I'll detail the sea and SEs themselves in the next post. This is where you can do the standard Evo game style, of SEs eating each other, evolving defences, and trying to carve out an ecological niche.

> The second ecosystem is Earth. SEs are capable of moving through tears, and arriving on Earth for brief periods. There, they gain access to a massive network of thoughts and concepts, based off the areas that they begin in. The SEs slowly twist and form themselves to match the fears of Humanity. The adaptation changes depending on the general culture of the area. For example, they might take on the shape of local folklore and urban legends, drawn from the subconscious of people living in that area.
>>
All the standard rules of Evos apply.

* Use something similar to MSPaint or Paint.net to edit images. Please make sure you use a SOLID BRUSH, which means turning off ANTI-ALIASING, and save it as a PNG.
* Don't change traits too fast. An SE isn't going to evolve into a humanoid shape in a single generation. Make small, gradual changes. And don't evolve the same creature too many times in a row. Vary them out, so each tree gets a chance to shine.
* Be sure to describe your changes, along with the image. Detailed descriptions are better, but make sure to at least say something like 'Smaller fins' or 'Bigger spikes'. It's good form to talk about what stimulus or function prompted the new evolution.
* FOR NOW, SEs cannot directly interact with humans. Don't develop means of attacking them physically or slaughtering them till the go-ahead is given.
* Events will take place eventually, in relation to the impact that SEs have on the Human World.

> tl:dr, ghost evo where they evolve to scare people better, and also to eat each other

> What's an SE?

Spectral Entities are a life-form from a 'lower' dimension; the Spectral Sea. They're masssless and can move through solid matter with impunity. However, high temperatures like fire can severely damage and kill them regardless of form. Bright lights also damage them, so they remain incorporeal in daytime. This is something they've never been exposed to, as the Spectral Sea is a uniform, boring plane without temperature. SEs take on three main forms at the moment. All three have access to a different Tear, that directs them to a part of the globe. At the moment, SEs cannot enter each others Tears.

When on Earth, SEs are incorporeal and invisible, until they choose to make themselves seen. Each SE has an ability to induce a MINOR Hallucination, Visual or Auditory, though by default, they lack the intelligence to use speech or make complex moving figures. They usually settle for things like rattling sounds, making it look like blood is dripping from walls, making shadows crawl and writhe, whatever sorts of primal fears that Humans still hold on to.

> Why do they terrorise humans?

In the Spectral Sea, the SEs eat each other, as well as delicious Ectoplasm that rains from above endlessly. But after being exposed to Humans, the three strains learned separately that they could nourish themselves on the Fears of their new targets. Causing them to experience fear will feed an SE, and so, they're incentivised to draw out as much of the emotion as they can. Due to their link to the Collective Unconscious, SEs are gradually learning more and more complicated fears, rooted deep in the culture of the places they haunt.

> Biology

SEs are made of Phase-matter, which is an ambiguous, anomalous mass of soft material. They can develop sensory organs, harder parts of their body, and grow without regard for physical biology. Their forms will eventually change heavily based on the shapes they take to scare humans, as well as predation on each other. At the moment, all SEs are vulnerable to flames and heat, as well as bright light while in a visible form. SEs cannot remain in the Human World indefinitely. After a period has passed, they'll be shunted back into the Spectral Sea. This is just to give every SE a valid reason for attaining SE evolutions.

The first SE is Limpwit. These little sackcloth creatures swim in the Spectral Sea by flicking their lower bodies. They have 'stitches' over a slightly hardened shell, to keep their matter in. The little buddies bash other SEs with their heads, and use their mouths to suck out the matter that spills into the sea.

The Tear in Limpwit territory has opened in the vast, boring, empty OHIO. A newly discovered ability of the Limpwit is to rot plant matter by phasing into it and attempting to turn corporeal. Like all the others, they can induce mild hallucinations in a human, though it can't be something particularly detailed or intelligent.
>>
Limpwits have manifested in a rather empty, rural part of OHIO. There are cornfields all over the place, Amish communities scattered, and a low population density in the area. At the moment, the concepts that stand out the most among locals are the harsh realities of living on a farm, unknown imaginary monsters and cryptids that stalk the woods, and coyotes that howl in the night and threaten to kill livestock. There's a certain gloominess to it, and the permeating fear of the unknown in the wilderness. If this isn't actually what Ohio is like, whoops. I don't go to Ohio, I have no fucking clue.

The second creature is the Rusa. These little creatures are bright and vibrant. They crackle with colour in the Spectral Sea, and are social creatures who group together. They ward off predators with the little spikes on their lower bodies, and are content to absorb Ectoplasm instead of hunting. Until they discovered the Tear, that is.

Rusa can induce the same minor hallucination. They've appeared in Tokyo, where Neon lights and electronics are aplenty. They also have the ability to disrupt electronics, causing lights to flicker, fans to stutter, and appliances to whirr. Exercising it for a brief moment is usually enough to get a brief spike of fright from a couple of people in a room, providing an easy source of food.

The sprawling metropolis is lively and vibrant. Plenty of tourists here too, so apart from the myths and superstitions on Japan, there are plenty of tourists to prey on. Rusa can take advantage of the big-city life to exploit the fears of the populace. Maybe they could mess with a businessman's phone in the middle of an important call, filling him with terror at the prospect of being fired. Or they could take on forms of the dozens of urban legends and creatures available.

The third of our Spectral Entities are Uwaves. These are the fastest among the three, when it comes to navigating the Spectral Sea. They paddle swiftly with the three limbs beneath them, and use their tails to change directions. They tend to do hit and run attacks, breaking off bits of other SEs and quickly absconding with them. These fellas have spawned in VENICE. They have a bit more corporeality in the Human World, compared to others. By ramming into something, they can cause a mere fraction of the physical force to transfer, and influence the object. They can cause mops and brooms to topple, send glasses off tables, and maybe cause doors to slam. This only affects OBJECTS at the moment.
>>
Uwaves have arrived in idyllic, wonderful Venice. Pretend it isn't in quarantine at the moment, and everyone is still out and about. Canals stretch throughout the city, and life is bright and beautiful. However, hydrophobes definitely have a hard time growing up in a city where the roads are watery. There's also the looming fact that the city-state is slowly sinking into the sea.

Just a quick example of a scaring adaptation.

The Limpwit has developed a reflective film over its eyespots and mouth. It stays within fields of grain, staring out at adjacent farmhouses. It mimics an unnerving face in the darkness, staring straight into the homes of farmers. When they check out the fields the next morning, they find that the crops where the face was spotted are all wilted. The Limpwit lingers invisibly, slurping up the fresh fear they feel at the sight.

As the Limpwit and Jackwit families terrorise Ohio, farmers find parts of their fields decayed and wilted, with odd symbols and malevolent markings left behind. Farmers are a superstitious folk, and they quickly pick up on the fact that something is going on. Word spreads quickly, and communities keep an eye out for the spirits that seem to have been angered.

As the SEs haven't caused actual harm, apart from controlled destruction of crops, the Farmers haven't been pushed enough to fight back yet. Of course, there's always the few who whip out their shotguns and try to take a crack at the otherworldly invaders.

Across Tokyo, electrical interference seems to be at an all-time high. Sometimes, important equipment short-circuits due to overzealous Rusa. More than a couple of blackouts have been caused by too many of them haunting the same area.

Citizens have become more used to the lights flickering on and off intermittently. That tactic loses a bit of effectiveness. What can't be adapted to, however, is the sight of the SEs appearing from thin air moments later.

Rumours travel quickly, especially among schoolchildren, of strange unidentified creatures that are feeding on electricity. Some claim to have been zapped by them, and a few grainy photos have started circulating. None are anything more distinct than a magenta smear, however.

Aspiring ghost hunters and bored teens have taken to exploring abandoned buildings. This provides the perfect fodder for the SEs to fulfil their wishes, or to avoid them if they're conscious about raising awareness.

However, as the rumours rapidly get more and more prevalent, experts have stepped up with their own explanation for the events. The brightest at Università Ca' Foscari have proposed an alternate explanation, encouraging the public to believe in it over 'ghosts' that have come out of nowhere.

**FEAR** of the SEs decrease across Venice. While some are still suspicious, and are trying to record these odd creatures in action, the general public has been reassured by the news publication. Uwaves now have a harder time scaring targets.

**Uwave lines have the opportunity to more rapidly develop stronger, less explainable methods of scaring people.** It's a delicate balance, however. Push too hard and there'll no longer be a way to disprove the existence of SEs.

They've developed sharp teeth along their triple mouths, and tend to bite objects in the water. Some Limpbonks have shifted their form a little. Coincidentally, there's a similar shape that humans fear quite a bit. The sack starts to tear, revealing the hard material underneath. It slowly starts to take on the shape of a revolver, frightening people with sudden loud gunshots. They've picked up on it after being fired at by rednecks.

Additionally, these Limbonks are slightly more durable in the Spectral Sea, due to their solid bits.

Some Rusas are born with a second pair of limbs on the other side of the body. By hooking onto a pair of power cables and allowing electricity to pass through it's body, it generates a weak force. While this force wouldn't be enough to move even the lightest metal wire, the Rusa's mass is near zero, and thus it is propelled with incredible speeds.
Of course, adding an extra pathway for electricity to the finely tuned cables screws the whole system up a bit, so these Rusas cause power to fluctuate whenever they use this mode of transportation.

>>4234404

The upsurge of SEs have had locals spooked lately. Across the more rural part of the countryside, citizens begin staying indoors as much as they can, and past sundown, few dare to linger in the fields. Many farmers have opted to take down their scarecrows and burn them, yet they still spot figures in the fields sometimes.

To make matters worse, odd, completely unexplained cryptids have been spotted in the area. There are growing forum communities dedicated to finding out more and circulating pictures. Some still believe it's a hoax, but the majority of residents have become acquainted with SEs.

The fact that some SEs can physically impact the world causes fear to skyrocket. Seeing figures is one thing. Having a flayed beast touch you, or a hammer slam into your back is something else entirely. The worst is when blankets and clothing seem to rot and decay, their organic components disintegrating without a trace.

The electric interference still hasn't been fixed, and local authorities are stumped. Few workers dare to actually pass up to their superiors that invisible pink ghosts appear around the damaged electronics, so word is taking a long time to spread. For now, the nation has gotten used to the electricity being on the fritz.

For those who seek out spirits, they find their efforts rewarded. Minor phenomena like exploding bulbs, floating objects (Tiny things like nails) and random sparks of fire have been recorded on film.

Tokyo is UNSETTLED in terms of Terror.
Tokyo is VIGILANT in terms of Hostility.

Tokyo has gotten used to most of the SE techniques, and awareness is low. More extreme measures are needed, or the SEs will begin to starve.
>>
>>4234414

While the 'expert opinion' in Venice has put off fear for a while, it soon becomes evident that most of the activity can't be explained by science. Scientists heading out to confirm the hypothesis end up seeing the SEs for themselves, and taking an interest in it.

The reports of strange fish in the canals have sparked notice too. Anglers and aquarium enthusiasts head out at night to try and trap these new species, providing the SEs prime targets to scare. Unfortunately, the ones that bite and mark humans have made them vigilant against the odd creatures.

Venice is UNSETTLED in terms of Terror.
Venice is VIGILANT in terms of Hostility.

Targets for the SEs increase. More opportunities to scare are present, and the Uwave line of SEs can grow bigger.

Event!

Due to having his theory on the weather phenomena refuted and dismissed by his peers, the shamed scientist Massimo Pesci takes to the streets of Venice. There, he encounters a >>4234496 Uwraith by himself. Massimo Pesci is not one to dismiss such a thing as a trick of the light.

The man quickly comes up with the hypothesis that this is some sort of undiscovered organism. The fact that they shimmer in and out of existence is something that needs to be explained. He devotes himself to cataloguing and potentially trapping one of these odd entities.

Paranormal Investigator gained: Massimo Pesci.
Understanding: 5%

As understanding increases, the research groups gain more and more awareness of the SEs, including how to damage and detect them. At 20% understanding, the SEs become aware of their interference, and are able to disrupt their efforts through their own actions, at the cost of potentially increasing awareness.

Compared to the last time, SE influence has skyrocketed. The sheer frequency of mysterious figures on the road have made the situation impossible to ignore. Multiple fatal accidents have occurred, due to drivers having to swerve their cars abruptly, or having their windshields shattered out of nowhere. While there's not as much potential for mass pileups in the rural regions, solo drivers that crash into ditches or end up skidding off hills are unable to get help, and tend to die from their injuries while stuck in their vehicles. Dashcam footage confirms sightings far more efficiently than anecdotal evidence would be able to.

Cryptid hunters continue attempting to trap and locate odd sightings >>4240980. But obviously, they're unable to actually capture them. Local media becomes saturated with information on it, and it happens too abruptly for it to be censored.

The new branches of shark-like Uwave are more capable of damaging and harming Venetians, though nobody has died yet. Fishermen are absolutely baffled by their existence. The occasional sighting has been photographed and recorded, and the 'spirit fish of Venice' have become a local point of intrigue.

After spotting Uwraiths >>4244661, some locals have began to theorise that there's a connection between the ghostly fish, and the mysterious figures who stalk the streets and congregate along the canals in the dead of night, while fog rolls in to obscure them. The police are unable to do anything, as the cult mysteriously vanishes when they go near them.

Venice is INTIMIDATED in terms of Terror.
Venice is CONFRONTATIONAL in terms of Hostility.

Venice experiences general unease at the existence of an unpredictable cult. This surge of ever-present negativity serves as a new food source for the SEs. Members of the Uwave line are able to affect the human world more and more, and grow larger on fear and anxiety.

Flooding

A recent surge of rainfall, coupled with seasonal tides, has left the streets of Venice flooded. Next update, Massimo Pesci's efforts will certainly be hindered.

Water rises up to waist-level in many parts of the city, causing damage to infrastructure and harming livelihood. Not very positive.

For the humans, that is. With water rising up to dangerous levels, the Uwaves are given worlds of new possibility. Perhaps they could pull people under, or make use of their hallucinations, or simply use the water as a hiding place. Whatever it is, their evolution is, as usual, a fine line they have to straddle. Go too hard one way, and they risk discovery. Go too hard the other, and risk starvation.
>>
GLOBAL EFFECT

Their influence on Humanity as a whole has started to shape the culture of their haunting-grounds, just as much as the act itself shapes the SEs. The ghostly creatures grow more attuned to their prey of choice, and can extract more precious sustenance. From this point on, SEs are able to slowly start branching out to different emotions. Please make this change gradual and slow. Don't have them completely adapt to another emotion right off the bat, and keep it to emotions that are reasonably close to fear.

We aren't at that point yet, but I'm now considering making new tears for the creatures.

Maybe I should swap over to Shanghai instead of South Korea? Shanghai does sound better though I honestly prefer Texas over Mexico City. Mexico City could end up complicated if we try and actively get fear but it has enough regular terror for the ghost not to actually do anything.

Yeah, I'm thinking Mexico because it's a 'harder' ecosystem, kinda like deserts in regular evogames (or IRL). Lack of easily-accessible fear, or perhaps just a different sources of fear.

Some suicidal stridestick have moved away from their traditional methods of fear: in stead of standing or walking in front of a vehicle, they will instead shadow vehicles just out of their vision range, so that they will, for example, occasionally be seen in mirrors while travelling, or just above/ahead of a vehicle. They are capable of producing a 'proximity effect' of what might be described as mental static, causing victims to lose concentration and often resulting in crashes or other accidents. They have lost their lower limbs, and now float in the air at arbitrarily fast speeds. They have also lost their eye-markings, as an eyeless face initiates more of a fear responce in some contexts than one with eyes. For the same reason, they have lost the teeth in the mouth cavity (as well as having no more need for them) and the mouth has grown much bigger and wider. Their skin is a pale white, to be better visible at nighttime.
