Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls in secret. But now, with their existence revealed, a great cloud of change looms over Dark Gate Academy.

“Oh yeah, nothing beats a good road trip!”

Akio stretches out on the bus, with a wide smirk on his face as usual. Hikaru, sitting next to him, is quick to tilt her head. “A road trip towards a demon kinda puts a damper on it all, don’t you think?”

Akio scoffs. “Please, with our track record? It’s no biggie, we’ll have that demon nabbed and be back in time for supper!”

“You’re awfully excited,” Hiro points out. “I can’t imagine anyone being excited to fight like that.”

“You’ve met me, right?” Akio points out. “Besides, that’s not what I’m so hyped over.”

Hikaru chuckles. “Ah, yes! Who could forget! You looked like a newborn puppy the second Wei said this reading was coming from-”

“The Raibaru casino district!” Akio cheers. “I’m gonna be rolling in dough by day’s end!”

“Or in another two and a half years when it’s legal, right?” Hiro asks.

Akio waves his hand. “No way! You think those places actually check stuff like that? As long as you’re bringing them in money, you’re fine!”

“If you’re bringing in money to the casino doesn’t that mean you’re admitting to losing?” Hikaru points out.

“… Huh. You’re right. Good thinking, babe! This is why you’re the brains of the operation!” he smiles.

Hikaru sighs. “Yet somehow despite being the highest ranked student in class on this mission, I’m not the designated leader. Explain that, Ryoji?”

You lean back in your chair, listening in. “I dunno. Good leader, I suppose.”

Ryoji, it’s not good to taunt like that...

“Didn’t realise leadership was inherited from your fiance,” Hikaru shrugs. “I always figured this was a meritocracy.”

“If it makes you feel any better, you’ll be doing most of the work,” you note.

“With none of the credit…” Hikaru grumbles.

Akio shakes his head. “Hells to that, babe! You’re gonna crack the code of whoever this demon is, then you’re gonna be bumped right up to Kobashi’s chair in class! I’ve got one hundred percent faith that you’ll be walking outta there a real leader, and I’ll be walking out with a million yen!”

“I’m less sure on that second part…” she notes.

“Anyone can see it!” Akio nudges her on the elbow. “This is gonna be our big day, I can feel it! Even the new kid knows! Isn’t that right, new kid?”

“I’ve been here all this time,” Reiji sighs. “And I wasn’t listening to your banal chatter. I’m worried about Sanada-san.”

“Hoshi?” you raise an eyebrow. “Yeah, wasn’t she supposed to be joining us?”

“She’s taking care of a task with a couple of first years…” he explained. “But I didn’t see anything of the sort on the school rota… and she wouldn’t tell me what said task was.”

Seishiro crosses his arms. “Huh… Sanada ain’t the type to keep secrets. You think she’s seeing a guy behind your back?”

“We aren’t a couple,” Reiji points out.

“Sure,” Seishiro rolls his eyes. “And me an Satomi-chan aren’t a couple either? Suuuuure!”

“You and Mashimo are a couple?” Reiji asks.

“I really wish they weren’t…” Hikaru sighs.

Reiji shakes his head. “Besides, Akio… shouldn’t you be pointing out the new members of our class?”

Behind Reiji in the bus, Nishi is quick to panic, sitting next to her fellow Demon Hunter in Utako. “P-please don’t mind us! We’re just here to assist!”

“Get off our backs,” Utako adds. “Ya think there’d be a demon hunting mission and we wouldn’t attend? It’s in our damn name!”

“Are we going to have to count how many more demons we’ve hunted?” Akio points out. “You lot seem to be doing a crummy job. And you’re pointlessly mysterious! You know how much of a turn-off it is to stand around and say nothing but cryptic nonsense?”

“Turn-off?!” Hikaru pokes him in the ribs. “Besides, it’s not a contest… but if it were, we’d definitely be winning! Ha!”

The couple share a high-five and smile as each-other. They both seem to be in good spirits. Meaning that Akio likely hasn’t told her yet…

“All goes well, none of us will even have to fight a demon,” you point out. “Considering who our chaperone is.”

Akihito stands at the front of the bus. “Nice try, Shida. Archdemon’s are unpredictable, even a teacher like me might not be able to handle one alone.”

“But with a great Naito team-up, any demon we spot is toast!” Akio boasts. “Isn’t that right, uncle?”

“I don’t like any of you getting to confident,” Akihito lectures. “One slip up… and the worst can happen. Just because you’ve succeeded in the past doesn’t mean you can lose your focus this time. Buckle up… and no gambling, Akio! You’ll see a lifetime of detention if you do! You and Seishiro won’t see another lunchtime until you graduate!”

“Why me?” Seishiro asks.

Akihito looks at him. “Was there ever any point where you didn’t consider following Akio and doing exactly what he does?”

“Damn, good point.”

Akihito is in a grumpier mood than usual. Well… maybe not more than usual.

As you pool out of the bus, you look to your teacher leading the charge ahead, while Akio sees Hikaru off while she stops in a store to grab some quick lunches, and the demon hunters speak amongst themselves, detached from the rest of the crew as per usual.

Ryoji… remember what Keiji told you during the tournament?

“How could I forget?” you remark. Attaining an angel form will dispel an Archdemon from your body without bringing harm to either of you… a way rarer but also safer alternative to that holy water crap the hunters used on themselves, or whatever ritual the original Nina pulled that ripped her emotions from her. You’ve been thinking about it for a while… you’ve never been truly awakened, you’re too weak to hurt any demons on your own strength, in spite of your healing factor and tough body. Attaining an angel form is likely impossible for you, and the hunter’s solution leaves you reliant on regular pills… that they might one day run out of. In all likelihood… there is no way to separate you and The Stranger. A normal life could be off the cards for you… forever.

>Akio, have you spoken to Hikaru yet about your… family illness?

>Hey teach, what’s got you in such a mood?

Akihito glares over at you. "This is quite the bothersome trip, don't you think Shida?"

You shrug. "It is what it is, Teach. We've had our fair share of these already."

Akihito shakes his head. "I would appreciate it if my students weren't slacking off. Overconfidence can get someone killed."

... Ah. So that's it, isn't it? You shouldn't be shocked, but you were caught up in your own feelings.

"He's thinking of Sora too, isn't he?" Nina notes. "I... never even considered the effect on him."

"Me neither... he lost one of his kids..." you mutter, as Akihito starts to move onward.

As he presses on, you spot Hikaru exiting the store with a few handfuls of snacks. She tosses one to Akio, one to Seishiro, before turning to you. "Shida, catch!"

You catch the bag of biscuit sticks, examining it as you look to your blue-haired classmate. "I've got a lunch."

"Yeah, I assume it was made by Saki," Hikaru notes.

"How did you-"

"Because you left it behind on the bus," she points out.

She's got a good eye.

"You're in a pretty chipper mood," you point out to Hikaru.

Hiro smiles. "Yeah, it's nice to see you and Akio aren't bickering today!"

Hikaru shrugs. "We've got nothing to bicker over. Besides, today is probably going to end with a fight with a demon, so I'm just going to enjoy everything that comes before that part."

"And I'm gonna enjoy that part!" Akio exclaims. "Maybe I'll even get the spotlight for once!"

You spot a group of young women on the street corner, whispering amongst themselves while looking to your group. Akio notices them, and promptly puffs out his chest... before they approach Reiji instead, mobbing him for autographs.

Akio hunches over, grumbling to himself as you all approach the nearest casino. "The Lucky Inari..." Akio rubs his hands together with a smirk. "Oh boy, I'm gonna have some fun here..."

"Like hell you are!" Hikaru points out. "You're not going to gamble all of your belongings in one day."

"You won't be saying that when I'm winning!" Akio points out.

Hikaru nods. "Uh-huh... and Akio, what's your current networth?"

"Uhh... about a thousand yen?"

"Right... and what happened to the rest of it?"

"Lost it in a card game..." Akio mutters.

>If it keeps Akio distracted, let him. You and I can do all the thinking and talking.
>Not a chance, Akio. I don't want you borrowing money from Saki again. How much do you owe her now?

>Not a chance, Akio. I don't want you borrowing money from Saki again. How much do you owe her now?

Akio lets out a chuckle. "Heh, like I could keep track of that much money."

"... How much was it?"

You step inside The Lucky Inari with your group, lead by Akihito. Arriving inside, you're quick to draw the attention of security.

"Excuse me sir," the head of security, a man in a dark black suit with sunglasses notes. "If you're here with minors, we'll have to ask you to leave."

"We aren't here to gamble," Akihito explains. "We're here on an investigative trip. I understand the owner of this casino was in touch with-"

"Ah!" a voice rings out at the top of some stairs in the lobby. At the top stands a fashionable young man in a coat, with a spade tattooed under his left eye. "You must be Naito-san from the academy! Let them in, boys!"

The security backs off, as the man approaches Akihito. He shakes his hand with a smile. "Much apologies, I'm-"

"Naofumi Nakanishi," Akihito replies. "The owner of this place, yes?"

"Yes," he nods. "Welcome, welcome, make yourselves at home. I don't really understand this whole... demon hunting business, but I suppose it is the new reality. Just have to get used to it, right?"

"Ryoji... he..."

"Psst!" Utako whispers in your ear. "You feel it too, right?"

"He's not even trying to hide it..." you mutter.

Akihito nods as he releases his hand from Nakanishi's grip. "Well, we won't be here long. We'll just be discovering the source of the demon disturbance and be on our way."

Naofumi Nakanishi smirks. "Well, I suppose I can provide some assistance to make your investigation more simple. To make it brief..."

Nakanishi performs a twirl, followed by some jazz hands. "Ta-daaah~! I'm the demon you're looking for!"

Yep, that's what you sensed... but what?!

Why the hell is this jackass so blatant about it?

"You what?!" Akio steps forward, before being stopped by Akihito.

"Why would you tell us that?"

Naofumi shrugs. "I assume you're not inherently violent towards demons, seeing as you have three in your company."

Akihito shakes his head. "We know where they stand, and you? Is this a joke?"

"Nope," you reply. "He's the real deal."

Naofumi fixes his gloves. "Unlike those past foes of yours I've seen on television, I have no delusions of grandeur or desire to conquer the earth. I accepted a demon, but it does not control me."

They came to a deal, then? Unified, like Alice and Dreamer? Or yourself and Stranger...

"I have these powers to protect myself and those I care for," Naofumi explains, "And I think we and the academy can work closely in the future."

Akihito raises an eyebrow. "You're offering to become an ally of the school? And what exactly do you gain from it?"

"Well, I would be lying if I said I was an inherent philanthropist," Naofumi explains. "But doing good equal good PR. A rising tide raises all ships, you see. I'm willing to help, and in return, my business gains attention."

"Bullshit!" Seishiro yells. "No way this guy is genuine!"

Hikaru sighs. "Either way, he's not being hostile. We can't just attack the guy without knowing if his intentions are honest."

Naofumi smirks as he looks to Hikaru. "Lacking in trust, I see. Well, you're free to continue your investigation, but I promise you my words are honest. Make yourself at home, you're free to sleuth, enjoy some games even!"

"Free to sleuth?" Hikaru wonders.

"Enjoy some games?!" an excited Akio adds.

Naofumi turns around, continuing his business, as the rest of you huddle together to discuss.

"Can't we just bash him?" Seishiro asks. "I'm not trusting a single demon around here. No offence, girls."

"We aren't demons anymore," Utako replies. "Your buddy Ryoji is the only demon among us."

"Yeah, but I like him. No offence," Seishiro adds.

"I don't trust a sleazy guy like that for a second..." Hikaru mutters. "But we need to know if he has an ulterior motive for sure or not..."

Reiji crosses his arms. "Well, how are we supposed to go about that? If he's so upfront with this information, there's no doubt whatever evidence to the contrary he has under lock and key."

"Yeah, I figure if we look to much like we're snooping he'll find a way to cut us off," Hikaru notes. "Nobody is that welcoming of an investigation unless they intend on controlling it."

Akio nods, while crossing his arms. "No two ways about it, I'm afraid. We'll just have to keep our ears to the ground, blend in, and play some games."

Reiji nods. "Yes, yes, we'll... wait, no-"

"Let's go!" Akio continues, leading the charge into the casino as a whole.

Reiji sighs. "He's going to be trouble, isn't he?"

"Yeah, probably..." you reply. You place your hands in your pockets and continue to the casino floor. This is gonna be interesting...

>Meanwhile, back at the academy...

It's not often you're disturbed during your study. Final exams are right around the corner, and you found yourself locked in your room pouring over textbooks, hoping to maintain your rank as the top in the class come the next year. You wonder how Ryoji and the others are doing in Raibaru... they're likely succeeding. Akio and Seishiro can be volatile factors, but Naito-sensei is with them. They'll be fine, no doubt.

Still, there are some things you can't ignore in favour of your studies. And one of those is a text from Chihiro reading "Need ur help! Big emergency! I'm in the courtyard! Save me!" followed by several indecipherable emojis. If your friend is in distress, you can't hesitate to help!

You arrive at the courtyard, where Chihiro is standing around... accompanied by the rest of the girls from your class, barring Hikaru who is out on a mission, and Hoshi who was joining the first years for... something. You're not sure what. "Chihiro?" you raise an eyebrow. "What's the emergency?"

"The crisis was getting you out of that room!" Chihiro exclaims. "We're gonna go into the city for a shopping trip!"

You stare at Chihiro... before turning back around. The white-haired girl drags you back by force while pleading. "Come on, Saki!"

"Leave me alone, I have to study!" you plead back.

"You NEED a social life!" she fires back, heated up. "You're going to miss out on the best years of your life!"

"... Who would have thought these two would end up with those angels forms before everyone else?" Rini remarks, observing your scuffle.

Rei turns her head away and huffs. "Pft, that isn't anything special. How about we ditch Kobashi and just move on?"

Akemi gasps. "You can't abandon your best buddy! We're siblings in arms, standing on the front lines of friendship, before going over the top!"

"Over the top against what?" Rei asks.

Akemi ponders. "Hmm... Dinosaurs?"

"We're just going on a shopping trip!" Rei explains. "It's no war!"

Chihiro runs out of breath trying to contain you, but you soon realise she won't give up easily. If she's so desperate for you to join them... "Fine," you splutter for air after your tussle. "I'll come along."

"Yay!" Akemi does a hop of joy, before grabbing your arm and hugging into it. "Let's gooo!"

Sayeka gives a small smile as you walk alongside her. "I'm sorry about this, Saki... still, I'm sure you'll find something you need in the city."

>Now that you mention it, I should get a graduation present for Class 3...

Sayeka nods. "Ah, of course. Their graduation... goodness, it's only two weeks away, isn't it? We have our final exams in a few days... then we'll be seniors, and our senpais will... well, they'll move on."

You wonder about that. When you graduate from the academy... would you be able to move on? Yes, your ultimate goal is to be principal of the school, yet... do you think you could step away after the time comes to graduate. You should, but... you're not sure if you can.

On the train to the city, Nanami keeps dozing off and laying her head on your shoulder. At one unfortunate point, she inadvertently headbutts you.

Arriving at the city station and rubbing your head, you're mobbed by Chihiro who herds you all off the train with an excited flair. "Now, we journey into-"

"I'm heading to the sportsware store," Rei interrupts Chihiro before she begins. "I'll catch you all at the train station later."

"Hey!" Chihiro grabs her, dragging her back into the fray. "No splitting up! This is supposed to be one last trip of the year for us!"

"This is the first time we've ever done a trip like this," Rei points out. "Why are so adamant we act friendly? Aren't you the rich bitch class gossip? Most of us weren't friends for most of our school lives... some of us still ain't friends."

"You mean somethin' by that?" Rini rolls up her sleeve.

Chihiro pouts. "Well, we're very much friends now, aren't we?! How about we act like friends and not fight and enjoy a normal day in the city like normal teenage friends do?!"

Chihiro lost her cool there, a rare sight indeed. Her dove-like beauty gave way to a puffed up pigeon as she snapped at the other two. She clears her throat. "Ahem, what I mean to say is we'll hit all of the shops together, as a group. That way, nobody gets left behind or lost."

"What are we, ten?" Rini scoffs.

"Well..." Satomi tells her roommate, pointing towards Akemi and Nanami. "I don't trust all of us to have the clearest sense of direction."

Rini nods. "Yeah... Akemi, Nanami! You two stick with me!"

"Sure thing!" Akemi salutes and hops over without question, though Nanami is more confused.

"Why?" Nanami asks.

Rini tilts her head. "You two are the most sheltered of us, you've got like... whatever the opposite of street smarts are. Negative street smarts."

"That's not true!" Nanami protests. "I can be tough... I can be a greaser... ooh, let me study under you, Tozawa-san! By day's end, I'll be able to introduce my new character, Chief Nanami, Head Delinquent!"

"Ooh, that accent!" Nanami mutters to herself, changing her speech to sound like Rini. "Oi!" she practices, before clearing her throat and trying again. "Oi! This is our turf! Mosey on out of here!"

"Don't say mosey."

Well, you're all off to a great start. You and the group come to a clothes shop first, which brightens the eyes of Chihiro and Nariko. "Look at it... Valhalla..." Nariko admires the finest designs on display. "Shall we?"

You raise your hand. "I'm not that into fashion-"

"But you look so good!" Chihiro gasps, poorly feigning surprise out of coutesy.

You nod. "But there's a burger place across the street! I can take everyone's orders, and we can eat on those benches after you're done browsing!"

"I take it you're payin' right?" Rini asks.

"Yeah!" Nanami rolls up her sleeves, while hunching over. "We delinquents ain't big fans of disposable income!"

"Are you making fun of me at this point?" Rini asks.

"I'm not sure."

You nod. "Of course. I'll need someone to help me carry it all, though..."

Most look excited by the store, none seem eager to volunteer for waiting in line and dragging food back to the others. Wait... they're still looking at you like the class leader! But this is a mutual trip! You're not in charge, you're all equals here!

"Rini, do you mind helping carry everything?" you ask.

Rini shakes her head, while pumping her bicep. "Oh, I see. You want the biggest and strongest to do the heavy lifting for you, huh?"

"No," Akira notes. "Then she would have selected me."

The two glare at each-other for a moment, before you catch Rei instinctively glaring at you. What, is this a team affair?!

"Darn, there goes my study subject..." Nanami sighs. "Oh well, back to normalcy," she adds, placing her pirate hat back atop her head.

You and Rini walk side by side towards the burger place, Rini cracking her knuckles. "Sorry about them dragging you out like this, Sak."

You shake your head. "It's fine. A break from my studies could be... n-nice... nope, can't say it. Almost threw up thinking of saying it."

You perk up. "Oh? Nothing... it's just, I don't want to be left alone."

"I've... been alone," you remark. "A lot... for most of my life. But it wasn't because I wanted it to be that way. I never tried to chase people away... heck I... even used to pay my elderly maid to give me a hug when I was lonely."

Rini's eyes dart about. "Wow... you just unloaded the saddest thing I've ever heard on me. Wasn't prepared for that."

"I always wanted friends as a kid," you explain. "But focusing on studying, focusing on being proper, focusing on earning a leadership position... it just never happened. Kids avoided me. Even for our first year here..."

Rini sighs. "Yeah, yeah... nobody liked you a year ago. Who cares? That was a year ago now. Now? Hell, we waited for you to pick someone to take with you. You're our respected leader and all that junk."

You smile. "Yeah... you're right. Come on, let's get some burg-"

You weren't looking where you were going, as you bump into a green-haired figure in front of you. The woman falls to the ground, and you instinctively help her up. "Oh my goodness!" you exclaim. "I'm so sorry!"

"It's quite alright..." the young woman mutters. "I can be quite the klutz. My head was in the clouds!"

She looks you in the eye as you help her up, her taller frame starting to loom over your short body. This woman has a striking presence, like a politician or a celebrity. Did you accidentally bowl over an actress or something?

The woman continues to stare you in the eye before taking your hand and kissing the back of it. "EH?!" you let out, confused and embarrassed.

"Charmed to make your acquaintance," she replies, before Rini steps in.

"Look, sorry about whacking into you, but we gotta get moving-"

"Have I seen the two of you before?" she asks, ponderously. "Perhaps on tv?"

Rini shrugs. "Hell if I know. Come on, Sak."

The woman pauses before looking at you. "Yes, I won't keep you long... but both of you..."

She throws up her hand, humming to herself as she closes her eyes. "I sense... why, I sense... a great kindness, and a great tragedy, within each of you. You have the heart of a roaring Lion..." she points to Rini, before pointing back to you. "And you have the heart of a blazing dragon. You both will go far, young ladies."

"Thank you..." you smile. "Again, sorry..."

You turn away from the woman, as Rini gestures, swirling her fingers over her temple. "That lady was a little whacko, don't you think?"

"I think she was just being nice," you reply.

"Acting like she's some sort of phoney mystic, who does that?"

"Sayeka can see the future," you point out. "Maybe she legitimately sensed something."

Rini rolls her eyes. "Sure... you paying for the food?" she asks as you reach the restaurant entrance.

"It's only polite..." you mutter, before checking your pocket. "Oh no..."

"What?" Rini asks.

"It's just... well..." you mumble, embarrassed. "W-well, I... now... I may have made a slight... error..."

Yep... that lady definitely stole your wallet.

"Did you find her?"

You shake your head as you return to Rini. "Nope. You?"

Another shake of the head. "What kinda slime does that?" she mutters. "Well... I did that a lot in the past. Whatever..."

You sigh. "There wasn't that much in the wallet..."

"Don't say how much," Rini waves her hand. "I don't want to feel poor knowing what you consider to be not much."

"Still... what are we supposed to do about the food?"

Rini pats you on the shoulder. "Don't worry about it, Sak. I've got some cash, I'll cover it."

"That's generous of you-"

"Don't get used to it," Rini notes, before you both enter the burger place.

The rest of the crew meet you and Rini at the benches in the outdoor mall courtyard, food splayed out on the picnic table. Akemi is of course the first to rush the table. "Burgs, burgs, burgs!" she exclaims, grabbing her meal and drink. Rei grabs a drink cup and sips on it, before wretching. "UGH, is that pure sugar?!"

You wince. "Oops, we might have confused yours with Akemi's."

You swap the cups, as Akemi proudly drinks from hers. "Ah! That's right! I wanted a mix of every milkshake they had, with an ice cream swirl with all the toppings sprinkled in!"

Rei stares at her in disbelief. "How do your teeth not fall out? Crazy, right Akira?"

Akira just stares at the monstrosity, a bead of sweat running down her forehead before she licks her lips.

"If I was in charge, I wouldn't get the orders-"

"Yeah, yeah..." Rini waves her hand. "You're much better than Kobashi at this and that, we've heard it all before."

Chihiro examines you closely. "My dear Saki, you look a little shaken! Did everything go well on your food retrieval task?"

You could mention the pickpocket... but do you want the girls to waste their free time on the look-out for one? This is supposed to be a day for fun and relaxation, right?

Chihiro lets out a gasp as she takes you by the hand. "Oh, my poor dear Saki! To be swindled by a ruffian of the highest order! We'll see them come to justice!"

You shake your head. "It's not a fuss, Chihiro. Just keep an eye out, I don't want to interrupt our trip."

"That's considerate of you," Sayeka replies. "But I would hope we can return your wallet to you before day's end. Chihiro?"

Chihiro nods, releasing her doves. "Now, we'll have eyes everywhere!"

Nanami pounds on her chest while attempting to swallow a full burger. "Alright! It's up to Saki to choose our fun activities!"

You pause. "Right... yes... fun activities. Such as... uhh..."

"Surely there's something you consider fun?" Sayeka smiles.

"I... take pride out of a well made spreadsheet!" you reply. "Oh... but I guess that's not fun. I enjoy playing piano... but that's not really an activity, is it...?"

Nanami shakes her head. "Oh Saki... in the pursuit of being the perfect student... you never learned how to have fun! A tragedy for the ages... but let's fix that!"

Akemi hops on the picnic table, almost trampling over Rei's food. "Hey!"

"That's right!" Akemi exclaims. "It's time to give Saki a crash course on the art of having fun!"

... Oh boy. What have you gotten yourself into?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTCDxI8hHzo

Well... having fun it is.

You and the crew hit up the bowling alley in the mall. Nanami proves to be the ace of the game, scoring almost perfect, while Akemi struggles to play without the little guardrails up. Regardless, Akemi gets showered in soda in celebration of her only strike. You're lucky to be playing a different lane to Rei, who stares daggers at you the whole time... before being dismayed that you both somehow managed the exact same scores.

More exploring the city and the mall, with Akemi inadvertently finding herself interrupting a flash dance mob in the courtyard. Of course, she just rolls with it, making up her own dance as she does. The crew are enthusiastic about her declaring her new moves the Ibushi Golden Star Shuffle.

Chihiro poses in front of some billboards, snapping pictures of herself, before including others. She and Sayeka pose together, before setting up for a group photo on a timer. Rei looks reluctant to join, but Nanami drags her into the fray. Chihiro, the perfectionist she is, thinks a second pic would look better, so of course Rei has to be restrained for another smiling group photo.

Music plays in the courtyard as you're dragged from store to store, laughing and joking as you go. It brings a smile to your face... so this is what you were missing out on all these years, huh? Having it now... worth it.

>Meanwhile, at the casino

"YA-HOOO!" Akio exclaims, almost jumping on the table as he wins another round of craps. "BEST LUCK IN ALL OF JAPAN RIGHT HERE!"

You were hoping for your investigation to be inconspicuous, but this clown is in a partying mood, apparently. "That better be water in that glass!" Akihito warns Akio.

Hikaru lets out a sigh. "Nakanishi just had to say we were free to play games, didn't he? Ugh, he's so reckless... can't resist temptation for even a second, can he?"

Akihito shakes his head. "Just like his father... and most of his uncles. My family doesn't have the best history with... restraint."

"What made you so different, teach?" you ask. "You're so straight-laced... granted you've got the anger of one of those mountain men, but otherwise you're so by the book."

"I agree," Reiji fixes his glasses. "I must admit when I realised you both shared a family tree, I was shaken to my core. You're the finest educator in the academy, and Akio Naito is... the bane of my existence. What caused your path to diverge from your brothers?"

"Imagine being the youngest son in that family," Akihito points out. "I'm closer to Akio in age than I was to Akio's father. After being tossed around by giant siblings for most of your life, you end up avoiding that kind of behaviour."

>You sure, teach? I bet you let off steam tearing your shirt off and screaming under waterfalls in your downtime.

Hikaru nods. "Yeah. Akio is good at hitting things when we need him. For an investigation... you, me, Reiji and sensei can handle this."

"So this is a slot machine..." Hiro stares at one of the devices. "Never seen one in person before."

"Come on bro!" Seishiro nudges him. "Let's try them out! You might strike it big!"

"Well..." Hiro ponders. "I suppose if it was allowed, there isn't a problem, right? While the others are working, we can try a game."

Utako crosses her arms. "Typical normal folk. So wrapped up in stupid trivial... Nishi, get away from there!"

"But it looks fun!" Nishi exclaims at a blackjack table. "I'm learning the rules!"

You and the other three make your way to the main floor, looking out over the games being played. "Is Akio dry humping the air in celebration...?" Hikaru grimaces to herself. "This is so freakin' embarrassing..."

"We should start by asking around..." you note. "Is there a staff room around here? Or even a bar?"

"They seem to be over there," Akihito replies. "All the way across the floor from the entrance... wow, there's so many games you have to walk through."

Reiji adjusts his glasses. "It's all in the interest of enticing potential spenders," he explains. "The floor plan is tactical. Over 70% of the floor space is dedicated to the slots, and the table games are set up in the dead centre where it's accessible and the noise of the players can be heard in any corner of the floor."

"Either way," Hikaru replies. "You think it's best to ask staff? I mean, Nakanishi's the demon. They're his staff, what info are we really gonna get out them? Better to blend in with the players and gather what we can hear. Be inconspicuous and we might pick something up... unlike Akio."

Hikaru keeps her head down. "Do we have to? We've got a scene going on over there..."

"OOOOOH YEAH!" Akio exclaims after another win. "THE CREAM RISES TO THE TOP!"

"Is he always this unbelievably obnoxious when he wins?" Reiji asks.

"He never wins," Hikaru points out. "Huh... he never wins..."

You make your way to the table games, looking to Akio at the craps table... and instantly deciding to avoid it in favour of the roulette wheel. "Okay, time to play some-"

"Oh no you don't, Shida..." Akihito pulls you back. "I've had enough watching you students playing these games. It may be allowed by the owner, but you're all still under the legal age."

"I believe the demon hunters are technically older," Reiji points out.

Akihito grunts. "Either way!" he exclaims. "I'll play. You watch."

"What's your place, sir?" the croupier asks.

"Uhh..." Akihito examines the wheel. "Give me... 500 yen on black."

The croupier spins the wheel, as the small white ball bounces along the wheel. "Black!" the croupier declares, as Akihito is handed a few chips. "Oh, I won?" he raises an eyebrow. "Well, I suppose it'll go towards the wedding fund."

"Wedding fund?" Reiji raises an eyebrow. "Ah, yes. You are getting married, aren't you sensei? I take it you're saving up?"

He sighs. "Well, I've never had much money to my name... I... well, let's keep playing, shall we?"

Akihito makes another bet, this time on evens... and wins. "Well, I guess this is beginner's luck... ha... keep listening out, Shida."

You look around the tables. Most of the spenders are having a great time. Laughing, smiling, winning. This casino has the atmosphere of a party.

"I expected more sleaze..." Reiji notes. "But everyone seems to be having a great time."

You nod. "Yeah, and that's weird... I think we're onto something. Have you seen anyone lose yet?"

Reiji shakes his head. "No, I haven't. Everyone seems to be unexpectedly successful... perhaps we should stress test this?"

"Okay..." Reiji nods as he walks up to the roulette wheel. "I'll bet on 16. One in thirty-six odds."

Reiji hits the wheel and makes his bet. The ball rolls along the roulette wheel before landing... on the number 25.

He returns to you, confused. "Hmm... odd. I lost. Perhaps many around us seem to be on lucky streaks."

Another man walks up to the wheel, a new addition to the casino, a desperate look on his face. He slams his chips on the table and speaks. "I... I've got to win this... I-I have to pay back my debt or I'm dead... I'm putting it all on 36!"

Reiji gulps. "That poor fellow, he's going to wind up even further in debt with a bet like that..."

The ball rolls, and lands perfectly on 36.

"Y-yes!" the man exclaims. "I... I did it! I did it! Another game!"

Reiji places a finger to his chin. "That's... unexpected. But I still lost my bet."

You pause. "Maybe it's because you don't have any real desire to win. You aren't tempted by money, so you aren't invested in the result? Whatever's going on here may not affect you because of it?"

"Perhaps," he explains. "I'm not one to have an addictive personality. "But Akio..."

"Akio..." you mutter, as you look to see your ever unfortunate classmate... being ever fortunate. You approach him while celebrating and pull him away from the table.

"Whoa!" he exclaims. "What are you doing?"

"There's something very wrong about these games," you tell him. "Think about it."

Akio shakes his head. "Buzz off, Ryoji! You're ruining my streak! Can't you see I'm winning?"

Reiji steps in. "Can't you see? You're winning!"

Akio pauses, looking to the table, dice still in hand. "Shit... I get it. So this place is... cursed?"

"Keep your voice down," you mutter. "Nakanishi and his employees could be listening... but yes. But if he figures out we're on to him, he'll turn hostile. We need to figure out his exact scheme before that."

Akio nods. "Okay, then we need to... hey, where's Hikaru?"

"She's right..." you turn around, looking around. "Well, she was with us a few minutes ago..."

"Babe?" Akio calls out. "Babe?"

"These look lovely, thank you!"

You step out of the jewellery store with a set of six silver pins. One for each of the soon to graduate members of Class 3. A graduation gift you hope they'll enjoy. You had to borrow some money from Chihiro without you wallet, though.

You've been running about the mall all day... all this fun socialisation can be exhausting. You grab a bottle of water from a vending machine and sit on one of the benches. You let out a deep breath... before noticing the girl sitting beside you. "Oh, hey Rei."

Rei adjusts her hat as she looks over the people. "They move so slow... how do they get anywhere on time?"

"People watching?" you note.

Rei looks to you. "Yeah... not much else to do."

"I noticed you haven't even been window shopping," you reply. "Not interested in buying anything?"

Rei remains silent. "Sure..."

Oh. Rei... you should have been more considerate. She can't afford anything here, can she? Her parents position, her upbringing... she's still wearing the same tracksuit every day. And you and Chihiro waving your money in front of her...

Rei yawns. "I guess so, Kobashi... at least if you're not training, I'm not falling behind you by coming here either."

You pause. "Falling behind...? You're really big on this rivalry, aren't you?"

Rei leans back in her chair. "More than you, I get it... hm?"

Walking across the mall, an elderly woman loses her footing and begins to trip. You feel a gust of wind, and a second later, the woman is standing upright, safe and sound... and Rei is back on the bench.

"That was nice of you," you reply. "You're keeping your eye out... you're a thoughtful person, aren't you?"

"Surprised?"

You shake your head. "Some might call you self-absorbed because of how focused you are on your training... but you're one of the most kind-hearted among us."

Rei blushes, pushing her hat down. "Sure..."

Leaning back on the bench once more, Rei looks up at the sky. "Kobashi... when I first arrived at the school... it was odd. Here I was, some broke kid who expected to just sneak into a crummy school... and apparently I was set to be some kind of world saviour. I didn't need that. I just felt like I had to make it big and provide for my folks. Then I find out about someone like you... the principal's granddaughter, born into this world with a natural born talent."

"You... saw me as a goal?" you ponder.

Rei shakes her head. "I SEE you as a goal. Kobashi, it takes all my effort to even keep pace with a natural like you. If I can't surpass you... I'll never be good enough."

You sigh. "Rei..."

Rei stands up, her face red. "Anyway, let's get going, shall we-"

With her hat pulled down, Rei doesn't notice the figure in front of her, knocking them over. "Oh, crap! Sorry!" she exclaims, as she helps up a woman... with long green hair.

"Hey!" you exclaim. "You're the one who stole my wallet!"

"She what?!" Rei exclaims, gripping the woman's arm. With her free hand the woman reaches into her pocket and tosses your wallet back to you.

You raise an eyebrow. "Okay, Kaori... what is this supposed message."

"Oh, that's no fun!" Kaori protests.

"Answer her!" Rei exclaims, gripping her tight.

"How about we make a game?" Kaori explains. "You'll receive your message... when you catch me!"

Kaori's hand appears to faze through Rei's grip, and she leaps down the balcony... landing perfectly on her feet and hopping from spot to spot below.

>We'll look for a back-room or something.

"If those bastards abducted her..." Akio mutters under his breath. "Dammit... I shouldn't have gotten distracted. I shoulda been paying attention..."

Reiji shakes his head. "You shouldn't beat yourself up, Akio. For all we know, she could be simply off doing her own investigation..."

You look around for a back-room of some kind, but find nothing towards the back wall of the casino. "This place is like a freaking maze..." you mutter.

"Hmm..." Reiji mutters, surveying his surroundings. "That elevator, where does it go?"

The three of you get moving, striding up to the elevator, before being stopped by security. "Members only," the security guard speaks.

"Members only?" you raise an eyebrow. "What's through here?"

"That's for member's only," he repeats.

Reiji sighs. "Very well, how does one become a member?"

You hear a chuckle from behind. You turn around to see him... Naofumi Nakanishi. "Well, I'm afraid you won't be able to afford that luxury. You're too young to become official members. I can let a few games slip under the radar of course, but not when actual documentation in involved."

Akio is quick to snap, to no surprise. "You bastard! Where's Hikaru!"

"Would that be your blue-haired friend?" he asks, as he makes his way to the elevator himself. "She was doing quite a bit of sleuthing. In the interest of transparency, I allowed her access to the upper suites so she can ensure that this operation is completely honest. I'm sure when she finds nothing nefarious, she'll rejoin you downstairs."

"Bullshit!" Akio snaps. "You assholes are keeping her holed up, aren't you?"

Naofumi simply smirks, as the elevator doors close.

"Dammit!" he exclaims, as the security guard steps in. "Sir, step away from the elevator."

You let out a sigh, as you and Reiji drag Akio away. "How are we supposed to get up there?"

"There must be a way to gain membership..." Reiji mutters. "Akihito-sensei... he's not too young. He can go in our stead."

"Good thinking," you reply, before turning around... bumping into Hiro and Seishiro as you do. They're both holding onto buckets full of chips.

"Seishy!" Akio pats him on the back. "Let's get moving. We've got a demon to-"

"No can do, Aki!" Seishiro replies, pushing on. "We're winning, and having the time of our lives! If we keep this up, we won't have to worry about anything again! All the honeys will be crawling over me while I'm loaded!"

"You can play games later," you reply. "Right now, we-"

The two snap to attention, glaring at you... it's then that you get a good look at their faces. Their eyes... their smiles, looking like they were bolted on and stretched out. "We're having fun!" Hiro exclaims. "Why, Ryoji? Aren't... you having fun?"

"Bro, aren't you having fun?" Seishiro asks.

Another head amongst the patrons turns, staring at you. "Aren't you having fun, sir?"

"Okay... this is the creepiest thing I've ever seen..."

"Let's move," you whisper to the others.

You rush to the roulette wheel, where Akihito is still playing. "Uncle!" Akio exclaims. "We need your help with-"

"Another game..." Akihito mutters. "And I'll be able to pay for everything. She can rely on me, even after I'm gone. One more... one more..."

"Uncle!"

Akihito's head raises... displaying the same forced smile. "Leave me alone, Akio... I'm having fun. Aren't you?"

"S-shit..." you mutter. "Even Teach..."

"How the hell are we supposed to get up there?" Akio mutters.

Reiji nudges you both. "I don't know... but we may have other problems..."

You look around, as more and more smiling faces are staring at the three of you.

"Aren't you having fun?" rattles through the casino, as the three of you back up into each-other.

"Things just went from bad to worse..." Akio mutters.

"We can't hurt any of them..." Reiji explains. "They seem... brainwashed. This casino has some kind of hold on them... but they're still civilians."

"He's using human shields..." you note. "Scumbag..."

A few rise from their chairs, moving towards you. Shuffling like mindless zombies.

"Aren't you having fun?" Utako notes as she comes towards you alongside Nishi. Even they fell victim to it? Damn, a smile on Utako's face is already unnatural, let alone that one...

"I had no desire or care for money or victory..." Reiji notes. "So I wasn't taken in by the temptation... Akio broke away when he realised Hikaru was in danger... and you?"

"I've pretty much got a second mind in the form of Nina," you note. "With her in here, I couldn't be lured into any mind tricks."

"Of course..." Reiji notes. "But they're getting closer, what do we-"

Akio runs to the craps table, and instinctively rolls the dice... and wins. "Woohoo!" he exclaims... as the rest of the patrons turn their attention from you and return to their games. "Another win for the big guy!"

He looks to you and winks, speaking in whisper. "If we gotta get up there... we've gotta keep these people from going all zombie on us. And to do that... we gotta play."

"We need to find a way above without alerting anyone..." Reiji explains. "We have to blend in perfectly with the players..."

"... And when we get up there, I'm kicking that Nakanishi guy in the dick and getting Hikaru back," Akio mutters.

"We don't know if there's a way up there," you reply.

"There's gotta be..." Akio sighs. "Because if not..."

"If not?"

"... Something tells me we could be trapped in this casino forever."

What are your thoughts on this new demon? What's with the strange woman stalking Saki? And how do you see the gang getting out of this situation?

Thanks for running Booker.

Naofumi just wants everyone to have fun, is that so bad in these trying times? Kaori'll be from another carnie cult like the Shibatas or something and the gang'll probably start betting body parts/memories/souls to start climbing up the suites.

>Akihito, despite being the no-nonsense teacher of the class, didn't manage to escape from Temptation Casino
>Akio, despite being the biggest class delinquent, managed to escape through mere thought of wanting to save Hikaru
Akio definitely managed to one up Akihito this time.
