The transit to the Rylis system takes a week, during which you take your time to analyze the coming conflict. General Halleck has heavily fortified his inner system, and you'll be part of the main thrust. He has cruisers, atomics, and a nearly full ex-Imperial army waiting. A heavy payout, but plenty dangerous. Still, your men are eager, and this sort of Imperial contract does wonders to improve standing in the ever-shifting court. About half-way through the trip, Gurney, your trusted XO, approaches.

"Commander, those new Namaster recruits are shaping up, but we need to settle on an officer for command. How do you wanna proceed?"

"Gurney, I need you as XO. Among the rank-and-file, any bright spots?" you query as you stalk through the corridors of the vast Spacer.
"Ehh, yea, I got a few in mind. Gimme a couple to round 'em up." Gurney lumbers off.

About fifteen minutes later, he returns, with three soldiers in to. They snap to attention. Looking them over, you see...

>A slouched, extremely beautiful youth. He is immaculately dressed, and carries a laspistol at his side. He introduces himself as Kirrin. He currently rides with mechanized infantry.

>A thin woman, with a cutting smile. She has raven-black hair, and rides as a gunner for the mechanized infantry. She seems calm when she tells you her name, Mirra.

"Yup, all three of these devils distinguished themselves. Kirrin here is a damn good shot, while Polawski lifted a building off somebody in our last little scrap. Mirra called out three ambushes Guzman didn't even notice,"

Approaching Kirrin, he straightens and holds his smile back with visible effort.
"What makes you special, soldier?" you bark.
"Respectfully, no one's better than me. Give me a target, and I can hit it."

"Fucking psycho, more like!" blurts Mirra. If anything, Kirrin doesn't smile even harder. "That piece of shit shot three children in the last engagement, Commander."[/]

"The pirates were using them as shields. Besides, I only grazed them. They all lived." Kirrin's response is blunted, but he still seems to be silently laughing.

I want to keep an eye on the two we don't pick. For that we need to know what they'd be best at.
Kirin would be good for leading elites I think, where skill could be picked at until errors no longer existed.
Mirra seems creative, and may be best placed in a support role, but could lead the infantry well.
Depending on Polawski's response to that situation, and what he says about what he did, he might make a wonderful search and rescue/recovery team lead. Possibly put him in charge of Rapid Response Medics when we start putting that together.

You stand before the two hopefuls, and inform them of their new command. Kirrin chuckles softly, while Mirra blanches, but then straightens with a firm nod. Turning to Polawski, you say "This doesn't mean I'm not watching you too. I could use a spotter when I hit the weights. What say you?"
The big man slowly grins, and says, "First sensible thing I've heard. Glad to be of service, ma'am."

With that, the meeting finishes. The rest of the trip passes quickly, with Polawski proving true to his word, and helping you with weightlifting in your off-time. Kirrin has integrated as smoothly as a snake, while Mirra, under the careful tutelage of Gurney, is proving to be quite dependable with the infantry. The new recruits appreciate a softer touch.

Finally, the trip ends. The Rylis system is the last stop before diving into the enemy systems. Within minutes of your arrival, the ansible chimes. General Ghanti squat face appears. He somehow seems glummer than before. "Good evening. I won't bore you with pleasantries. High Command has seen fit to send a Royal member of the Household to oversee the operations, as part of their education. The princess has asked for every Company commander to be present for a dinner party. This is not an order, but a request. See fit to...interpret that as you will. Ghanti out."

Well, a Royal meeting, and with a princess no less. The Imperials have a habit for pomp, but this is pushing it. You

It's been a while since you've dressed up. You break out the slick, black dress you purchased two years ago. Conservative, yes, but never out of style; and what with your lifestyle, it's all you have.

The dinner party is being held aboard the Imperial Battleship Auspicious Heaven. The ship itself is a testament to the baroque sensibilities of the Royal Household. You shuttle over from the Spacer, and are greeted by the Honoured Legion, the black-clad enforcers of the Royals. The ship itself is bedecked in all the finery, golden baroque finishes, with a hardwood floor. You are escorted down several hallways, and then shown to large antechamber, a hanger retrofitted for the party. Hundreds of people swarm to and fro, with a dull chatter. You see black-coated Imperials, a mixture of Spacers, merchants and hangers-on, along with their colourful and bedecked finery. You decide to

You find a small table to wait at, and grab a flute of champagne from a passing tray. You note each of the Free Company colours and commanders you can see. You make it your business to know who else is in business.

Matsumoto, for the Red Sun Coalition, gives you a small nod as you catch his eyes. You last ran into him on Taltor, where you earned your sobriquet.

Further along, amidst a small cluster, you see Al-Hassan, of the Falcon Brigade. He is currently surrounded by sycophants and his harem, just as he likes it.

Colonel Hawkins sits to one side, on a chaise-lounge. She sips a small cocktail, and seems to be doing the same thing as you. She acknowledges you with a faint smile.

Lu Xian is a surprise, his face have obscured by the advanced cybernetics that compose most of his head. He is rather aggressively eating a small mountain of watercress sandwiches. His last engagement cost him much of his pre-frontal lobe, and he's been widely written off.

Additionally, there is a large contingent of lesser companies, mostly small bands numbering less than 100 souls. It seems the Imperials cast their net wide.

In all, a mixed bag. The Red Sun's are lot your company, with a broader focus on infantry and power armour. The Falcon Brigade has, honestly, too many jump-jets and VTOLs, but try telling that to Al-Hassan. Hawkins is dependable, but a bit too reliant on her artillery. Lu Xian spends most of his time on intel, and has some damn good spec-ops teams as a result.

Just as you are getting bored, a gong rings twice, letting everyone know that dinner will be served in 30 minutes. You have just enough time to...

The Imperial delegation is surrounded by the Honoured Legion. General Ghanti is most visible, squarly facing the room, with his hand on his powergun. Ghanti comes from a heavy-world, and his slightly corpulent form belies a strength. As you approach, he moves towards you, and shakes your hand briskly. "Commander Augereau. La Compagnie d'Anthelion. I read the reports. Smart move on Taltor, the Baron is a bastard. Not my position to say, but I think the Authority messed up there siding with the contract. "I'm more interested in the scrap up ahead, General. I've heard it will be a tough nut to crack. Why risk our assets?" you say with a nod towards the Royal contingent. He bristles, and then mutters, "Sometimes a soldier has to accept the politics. The Royal Family believes that the princess needs on-hand experience if she is to one day rule. Her Auspicious Personage is technically in command. But she's smart enough to know that she should stay out of the way, Void bless." Ghanti seems angry, but you can tell he's anxious underneath it all.

While Ghanti is talking, you catch glimpses of the princess. Black hair, pale skin. A slight build. She seems thoroughly engaged in a discussion with an aide. The dinner chime rings once again, and the large group moves over to the now set tables, laden with food. You sit beside....

Matsumoto looks up as you approach. He bows, and as you sit, murmurs, "I am glad to see you are well. The Baron has put out a shadow contract on you. 5 million credits." You smile in response, "I would expect no less from him. Where have your travels taken you, Matsumoto-san?"

"Far and wide. After your attack, the Red Sun rose in the east. A small matter of corporate law, I believe. No survivors, very nasty business,"
The two of you spend the dinner engaged in a series of conversations, mostly veiled, but always exceedingly polite. Matsumoto seems to think that this campaign will last much longer than expected, as his sources indicate a broad level of support for the General. He seems most concerned with the arrival of the Royals. "An unfortunate complication. The Royals have too many in-line for the throne. They may be seeking to...thin the flock. Ghanti is exceptionally protective of his charge, as well. This could prove to be problematic."

The dinner winds down, and once again, you head back to the main ballroom. You

You snake your way through the crowd, when an attendant stops you. "Her Royal Highness would like to speak to you in private." Glancing over at the group of Royals, it seems that your intended target is already gone. The servant takes you through several winding corridors, before depositing you in a room with a commanding view of Rylis, the planet you are orbiting. Tatami mats line the floor, and seating gracefully beside a pot of tea, the princess. She is wearing a kimona, and observes you quietly as you approach. As you settle down, bowing low as protocol demands, she speaks. Her voice is curiously low, and delicate,
"Power is a sword. For a sword to have purpose, you must kill. So too with power."

There is a pause, while she pours you tea. Taking her own, she sips, while staring out of the window.
"Our reports speak highly of you. It seems like you have already learned this lesson, dear Butcher. You talk with purpose. Ghanti, adorable as he is, did not dissuade you from cutting to the core of the matter. You sat with Matsumoto-san, another one steeped in ambition. Your soul seems steeped in the pleasures of the flesh. Death. Sex. Blood. All that is real. It is useful for us to have one such as you" Another beat, while you sip your tea. The princess seems content to stare outwards, and you are grateful you have a moment to calm your nerves.

"We require a favour. We cannot pay, but we can offer much in return. Before we tell you of what is to come, you must promise yourself to secrecy. Do I have your word?" With this question, the princess turns and looks at you. Her eyes seem to be staring at something beyond, as if she was lost in memories.

"We are glad you agreed. The antidote to the poison in your tea would not have been provided. Do not worry, there is a catalyst agent that must be used to make it truly efficacious." Your scowl prompts the princess to smile slightly. You feel as though you've been made a fool. "We want you to remove the General Halleck, and keep him from Imperial justice. Do not allow him to perish. We have plans for him."

You take a moment to digest this information and say

>Go fuck yourself. Also, where should I deposit Halleck after the capture?
>Her Highness is prudent. Where should I deposit Halleck after the capture?

>Archived the thread. If I return soon, will be next month. Work negotiations, etc. If those fail, the return would be pushed back to September. I do really want to keep this going.
