You are Henric, a young man living in the frontier village. Settlers moved out to this forested land over the years awhile back, forming an community producing timber, meat, hides and other goods of the forest. The ruler of this land is Baron Constan, he rules over the village from his keep up in the hill.

An horde of strange creatures raided and burned the village to the ground, your father went missing, you tried to escape with your sister, you were both attacked. Last thing you know is that she was injured and went missing after she ran to the woods.

After a confrontation by one of the greenskin, you were defeated and left to die as the fire consumed everything. You do not remember what happened next.

You just woke up in the middle of the ruins.

Mechanics
for every scenario, we roll 1d100, if its a fight we roll for strength and I will consider the best out of three rolls. In agility I will consider best out of two, same with the other stats.

Strength: 3
Agility: 2
Perception: 2
Wisdom: 3
Resolve: 2

Inventory:

Wounds and Status:
Broken Arm
Deep wound on torso
[Pain]
[Hungry]
[Thirsty]
[Tired]
[Stress]

You cannot fight, sprint, sneak, climb, swim etc.
>>
You realize that one of your arms is completely twisted, your forearm is broken in two pieces, you are afraid to look even further the sight of the bone exposing tearing through your skin almost makes you vomit. The wounds are screaming of pain, you wish you could cut the arm off, you need to find help but no point of laying on the ground here.

You try to get up rolling over to the side of your good arm, the pain begins to grow and grow as you continue, you end up stopping for a moment to breathe. You use your other arm for support, you managed to lift your torso using an arm as support.
From the new perspective, you can see the remains of the village more clearly, corpses and pieces of guts are on the ground, most of the buildings have been consumed by the fire leaving nothing but burnt pieces of wood.

The houses have been ransacked broken into, you can imagine that everyone valuable that there was it's now gone, the silence is unsettling. You begin to wonder if anyone survived at all, some of the corpses are small enough that you can't tell if they are remains of goblins or children.
The fences around the village are in poor state as well, most have been fully breached and broken apart.

The feeling of pain is constant but the more you don't move the more it begins to dull, from here you can think of a few ideas.

Perhaps your house is still safe and standing, you are going to have to crawl, try to get up or use the ruins as support to walk from there you can take care of your wounds.. but then again, no way to tell if the fire didn't destroy it or perhaps you can use a stick, climb the hill path unto the baron's manor, alerting him would be very wise. Both of them will require effort.

There's a third option, there's a nearby river that the village uses for farming and drinking, you remember a few fishing huts built alongside it. If anyone survived they probably went there, but then again, the monsters that did this are probably on the move and raiding anything that's near if they haven't gone to the baron's castle. You can only hope that your sister and father are safe somewhere.
You haven't to the river in a while so figuring out the path might be tricky.

Your wounds are in a terrible state, but they are not bleeding, the fire and the ambers burned them. Preventing you to bleed out, you assume.

But you still need someone to take a look at it before they fester, the baron definitely has someone that can help you, your house might have some medicine left behind, you are unsure about the fishing huts

>Baron's keep

The castle.. that Baron had to see the smoke..

You don't recall ever seeing the baron, but you do remember seeing his men stopping by for taxes, meals, and just regular abuse of power... You curse at your situation, now those cruel men are the closest thing to salvation at this point. Are they going to be enough to defeat the green creatures?

If any survivor has probably escaped for to the keep, once the garrison knows about it surely they will put an end to this nightmare.

You struggle as you push with for arm and legs to get up, your limp arm moves around causing making you bite tight from the pain, finally, you are standing. Your sanity is tested as you get a better look at the ruins.

The whole sight sends a chill down your spine, what sort of animal could've turned what was once a peaceful place into butchered corpses, ashes, and collapsed houses. The putrid smell starts to melt with the burned wood aroma that flows through the air.
You turn around to the exit, climbing the hill will take a lot of endurance, pushing your body more than necessary wouldn't be too wise wouldn't? No, you need to do this, waiting here or going slow makes no difference. You are still going to have to climb, you don't remember the path being too rough, but with the recent rains..

Perhaps you can use one of the logs as a crutch or a walking stick? You are gonna have to do some digging or exploring to find something small and large enough, making one is not an option with a bad arm. That reminds about the broken bone, you could try fixing it up yourself, pushing the bone inside your arm, holding it tight with a stick tied with rags or you can just wait until a healer takes care of you.

Time is of the essence, those monster could be anywhere.. the woods are not safe anymore.

You leave the village behind, you shoot the last look to your home, things are never going to be the same.

The journey up the hill is not hard to start, there is a paved path and a wooden sign outside of the village, it leads to up to the mountains. It is normally used to bring supplies and alcohol more easily with carriages and carts.

As you walk, you notice something peculiar, the forest is quiet, it is unsettling. Something has changed.

Up ahead, you realize that the pebbles that make the road begin to get more dispersed, making it hard for your feet to step on, your shoes could use some repairs.
The terrain gets rougher to walk as you continue, the season of water has definitely arrived, the constant rain has ruined most of the path and turned into the mud. No, something passed through here, the tracks on the wet dirt are wild and messy, the rocks are dispersed letting small pools of water to form.

You continue to push through, suddenly something cold hits the back of your head, you touch it.. water... another drop hits your hand, you look at the sky, grey clouds begin to form on top of you.
The sudden storm makes you speed up the pace following the path, you make a false movement, the mud makes you slip and fall. Crashing on the wet and cold dirt. Your arm and wounds scream from pain, you yell as the storm draws more rain upon you.

A loud rumbling at the distances roars across the forest.

The raindrops are heavy, the quiet woods are now filled with the unstoppable sounds of water hitting leaves or the ground.

You pull your face from the ground, now covered in mud, you get up once again. You are not going to stop, you are not going to die covered with mud. You refuse it.

Another step and another and another.. you move and move, your march is relentless and so is your spirit. But is it your resolve making you act? Is it for the sake of your sister, Adalheid? for your father? The villagers? Or.. or is it for the anger and fear that you begin to feel upon thinking about those savages grotesque creatures.

Whatever it is, you push through.

Soon you begin to see what resembles a structure made from bricks of stone with a large gate for an entrance.

You let out of yell of pain as you stumble forward, your energy is depleted, soon you begin to collapse.

You open your eyes.

"Ah, you are awake" you hear a soft voice and your the light gets more comfortable to see.

You are in a small room, resting on a bed, some furniture fills the room, tables, and cabinets. A girl standing next to you, she carries her hair tied and wears light red dress with an apron, she offers you a wooden mug.
It's filled with water which you drink until it is empty, you feel it pass through your dry throat, ending up on an empty stomach.

"How do you feel?" she says, as she tends a firepit at the end of the room against the wall. It's warm and cozy.

Your muscles hurt and weak, each movement feels heavy, your other arm seems to be restrained by a tight bandage wrapped with a straight bar of wood.
The sheet that covers you reveal a green paste of grasses stuck to the large slash across your chest and shoulder.

''It's near midnight, you slept all-day, the leecher worked on your wounds while you were passed'' She drags a small chair against the bed, there's a tray filled with two bowls and piece of bread "Have at it" she says while handing you a wooden spoon.

Which you almost snatch form her hand, one of the bowl is filled with a red stew steaming, the chew on the pieces of meat with great delight. The vegetables are delicious as they dance on your tongue, finally, your stomach stops its constant grumbling happy to receive food for the longest time.

The other bowl has porridge which you leave for the end, as you continue to dig in, sinking pieces of bread on the stew.

"I see that you have an appetite" she smiles "You gave everyone quite the scare when we found you outside the castle" she places a hand on your forehead, you can see that her eyes are light brown almost golden now that she is much closer to you

"The fever's broken"

"Where am I?" you stop midway eating to inspect the room more carefully.

"You are staying with us, the servants, till your wounds heal, do not worry about a thing" she gives you a warm smile "I.. What happened to you? No.. forget that, I shouldn't ask, you need to rest"

"I feel like something heavy fell on top of me... everything hurts... I am very tired" you say as you finish with the porridge and the remains of the bread

"I'll bring more water, in the meantime, keep resting" she picks the tray with the bowls "You are very weak, but you are safe with us" she shoots you another warm smile

Your sight begins to darken as your eyes close again.

You spent the day resting, the light of the sun woke you up, apparently, you've been in bed for a couple of days since you arrived. Only yesterday you've been able to regain consciousness to eat.

As you got up, you noticed that your muscles don't feel sore anymore, your wounds are starting to heal it is painful but the servant girl told you that it was normal.
You noticed that you've gained a few burns from being too close to the flames and from the embers flying as well as a fair share of small cuts and bruises cover your body, at least they are not going to get infected anytime soon.

She became your sole company as she watched over you making sure you were still alive, often leaving water ready to drink and an empty piss pot in the ground at the end of your bed.
You both talked as you shared a light breakfast of small baked delights with tea, her name is Niene, she also used to live at the village with her family but had the opportunity to become a servant and work in the kitchens. She didn't ask about your injuries or why you were covered in the mud almost dead in the middle of the rain, even though she definitely wanted to know.
But should tell her about what happened to the village? Her family could have survived or maybe is best that she finds out once you tell the baron what happened.

A man came to visit, he was announced by one of the servants that were accompanying him as ser Bulfo, an older man with a carefully cut beard. He proceeded to ask you questions, about your injures, about the village and about the creatures.
You described it as best as you could, the horrors are still fresh on your mind, the duel that you had with that monster resembling a man. The man nods carefully as you tell your experiences, he interrupts a few times, then he continues to listen.

The creatures that attacked the fences, were much smaller and thinner than the ones that rushed the gates. Their skin was rough and grotesque, skin almost leather-like with a green, black, and brown color.

"These.. men.. You said they came from where exactly? The forest?"

"No, ser... I-I don't know, they just showed up and started killing.. they broke through the fences and barricades just to butcher us like pigs" you hands tighten "They torched everything to the ground.. there's nothing left but ashes.." there's anger behind your voice, to you they are nothing but savages not even animals, just beings of pure evil.

"I see... This clears a few things, truly a pity, the village was our main source of food.. tch" a bitter emotion crosses his face "You are not the first to that comes to us, there are are more survivors, they've been sleeping on tents at the courtyard"
>>
Survivors, that word, instantly you begin to think of your sister and father. You jump from the bed, an ache of pain makes you hold your chest, you almost stumble.

"Easy easy.. You are going to have to check for yourself, don't push yourself too much" He raises from his chair and places it in front to of you for you to use for support.

"My sister and my father, please tell me that you've seen them, she is almost blond and m-"

Bulfo raises a hand to interrupt you.

"Everyone who managed to get inside the castle in time were outside or near here, very few people made it from the village to here. Your best bet is to ask around" he places his hand on your shoulder, quickly removing it

Better than nothing you think, now you realize why the Niene didn't ask about what happened, perhaps she was trying to spare you or her family was long gone and the pain was still fresh on her.

"The leecher did a lot of work on your arm and that cut across the body. You better make you sure to thank him and the lord too, you've cost him quite the coin for potion and medicine" he walks to the door "Dress up, pay him that leecher a visit, we will talk later. You've raised quite the debt to pay" he leaves the room leaving you alone with your thoughts.

You leave the room, you ask for directions to the courtyard to one of the servant boys, he directs you to a staircase, you walk down then passing through the hallway and a door you see it, a yard filled to the brim with makeshifts tents and people.

The state of the refugees is poor, you see them covered in dirt, others just sitting on the floor staring to nowhere. The tents are messy, made out of the sticks, leather, and scraps of cloth, the smell is rancid.
It is clear that too many privies in one place don't have a good effect on the morale, it reeks of night soil.

You walk through the tents, trying to find a familiar face with little luck, all you can see are faces of sadness and despair.

Suddenly something pushes you forward violently.

"If isn't Henry, the coward"

You turn around to see a young man, he looks dirty just like his clothes which are torn and ragged. You know him, it's Jasso, you left him to die while you ran trying to escape.

"Surprised to see me alive?" he smiles while waving around his arms, he smells of alcohol and puke "Everyone is fucking dead.. Eugen.. my family, his family.. probably your family too"

You are about to talk but you receive nothing but a slap across the face, it stings.

"Oh shut the fuck up, piece of shit, left me to fucking die while you ran away" his voice is loud and angry "Eugen called for you.. he called for you.."

It takes you a moment to answer, you are conflicted, he is one of your best friends currently very angry. Angry because you abandoned him when he needed you but you had to, you did it for your sister.
The sight of seeing the village on flames was a hard sight for you, you panicked, almost leaving your sister behind to die at the hands of that monster.

"And what was I supposed to do? You saw it, I saw it... The village was in flames.."

"Don't give me that bullshit! I saw you ran, I had to help Eugen, pinned to the fucking wall struggling to breathe..." He looks to the ground, his fist closed almost shaking from pressure.

"Eugen called me and I did not answer but what about my sister? I ran but I went back to protect her from that fucking thing... now I do not know if she is alive, dead or worse... All I got is scars"

You get closer to him, resting your good hand on his shoulders.

"No penance will absolve me for failing you and Eugen, but know tha-"

He slaps the arm away

"Oh save your apologies for someone else you cunt.." he turns around only to disappear between the tents and beggars.

The small crowd that was listening to your argument quickly return to their business, no one interrupts, this is not the first time fights happen. You can't imagine how it would've been to spend the night camping in a courtyard as smoke and ashes fill the air from the corpses and houses of the village.

You continue to search around, you ask other refugees, but most of them were farming or hunting, others on their carts moving water to the village or the hill.
The state of the camp is very poor.. dirt and grime are starting to pile up, you wonder if they are even eating food. Some merchants are starting to recover their losses by selling traveling rations, compacted bars of grue, and who knows what. Salted meat seems to be what everyone wants.
If you had any coin, this could be a good place to get

You picked up some rumours from travelers talking about how the roads started to get more and more dangerous recently, mysterious ambushes, corpses appearing out of nowhere, everyone ignored the signs and continued doing business. Why there weren't any patrols.. or soldiers.. or anything? How can a group of savages walk all over this place with no one even realizing it?

Your best guess is that no one was expecting something like this.

You give up, your sister is not here neither is your father. You begin to wonder what to do from here, the lord comes up to your mind, you still need to talk to him.

You enter the castle again, you ask for direction to one of the guards, he gives you a puzzled look but you tell him that he had requested your presence. You walk upstairs, entering the hall of the keep.

It is big and filled with plenty of furniture, humble braziers light up every part of the throne hall and bathe the gloom gray colors of the light coming from the open windows in an orange glow.

A vermilion rug runs down from the throne for a few meters before coming to an end while pointed banners with embellished edges decorate the walls. Between each banner, none but a few have been lit and in turn illuminate the mosaics of what you can imagine are the previous late rulers
Extensive, colored glass windows are bordered by curtains colored the same vermilion as the banners. The curtains have been adorned with impressive needlework and burnished corners.

You see ser Bulfo and other men on the other side of the hall, they wear armor as they talk to the lord, an older man slouched drinking from a goblet, he seems distracted and annoyed.

One of the guards at the entrance, stop you on your tracks.

"The fucks you are doing here peasant?"

"Ah, Henric!" You hear a call, its ser Bulfo wavering for you "Let him approach"

You walk up to the end of the hall, passing alongside a large wooden table and chairs. It is filled with all sorts of meat delicacies accompanied with fine alcohol, there is pork, venison, and pies filled with fish. Your stomach grumbles as the aroma is too much for you to resist.
There's a man, eating from a plate with a bright smile, he wears and robe and a shiny necklace on his neck. You've seen him before, he is the bishop Paolo

Bulfo whispers you to stay quiet and wait beside him.

"This is the villager that collapsed in front of the castle, another survivor, m'lord. We must do something about the about this threat"

The baron removes the hand resting on the armchair to take another sip from his goblet.

"I thought he died, did that leecher wasted medicine again? Why did you bringing here? Put him with the others in the courtyard or something" he gestures with a wave

"My liege, we must do something against these invaders, allow us to send the garrison. They are going to continue to pillage the villages until th-"

"Bah, I thought this meeting was important, why would I even send my people to play hide and seek in the fucking forest.. If we have a bandit problem then send a few men to handle it and deal with it" he begins to stand but one of the soldiers accompanying ser Bulfo takes a step forward

"It is as ser Bulfo says, we've scouted the area, something is definitely out there.. the paved roads have been ruined, corpses fill the roads north, it is only a matter of time till we are surrounded" says one of the other soldiers in armor.
>>
"Surrounded? That is ridiculous" You turn around to see Bishop Paulo carefully sipping from a goblet "Surely you can't be serious Captain, do you claim that there's an army behind our doors? is this true peasant? Hah"

"Quiet you, drunkard" the baron looks at the priest readjusting himself in the chair "Bulfo, if this bothers you so much let the hunters handle the bandits or whatever wild animal is causing trouble.. Stop wasting my time with his!" he rises from the high chair downing the goblet in one big gulp, he drops it and begins to leave.

The soldiers try to argue with him only to get yelled at.

"Winter is around the corner! I've done enough by letting the filth camp out in my yard, get a few guards, and put the village in shape! I have taxes to pay! And mouths to feed! I will be on my room, we shall not speak of this again"

The hall is left in an uncomfortable mood, the few standing guards are dismissed, ser Bulfo talks to the other soldiers wearing leather. You eye up the exit until someone speaks your name.

"So this is the lad, Henric eh? So what are you? farmer?"

"No, no no... peasant probably shoves manure and feeds the pigs, probably" one of the soldiers barks with a loud laugh, holding his stomach.

You are starting to get angry, you've never been the one to sympathize with nobles, you at least tried to obey when they showed up for tax collection or just to get drunk, fuck wives.. tavern wenches.. even beggars for a coin or by force.

"Easy, easy, son.. my god you look furious," says Bulfo as he stops and looks at you "You better grow a thicker skin, no wonder you have a collection of scars, remember that you owe a debt, those elixirs on your arm are not cheap"

"Then I will work, ser, I am not afraid of getting my hands dirty. I'll settle my debt and find my sister and my father, they are still out there"

"And how do you intend to do that? You have no weapon, no armor and I doubt you have the training" he remarks "Work you will, but no farming or pig shit shoveling.. I am lacking men, you've proved perseverance and determination by coming here and that will not go unpaid, how about you join my retinue? We will see what we can do about your situation, many people are still missing and I fear that these creatures are not only just killing them..."

Dread fills you, he might be right, you pray that he isn't but he still makes a point with nothing to your name, this might be your biggest chance of finding your sister.

"Yes, ser, you won't regret it!" you exclaim

"It is settled then, Captain Bernard will be the one that'll show you the ropes" he smiles looking at the soldier that had insulted you previously, the others laugh as he grumbles in response "Don't dissapoint, Henric"
