It is deep in the cold season for you and the Rinim; as far as you’re aware, you are the last of your kind, having fled your ancestral lands in the face of the terrible Redjaws decimating your peoples. Having found a new land many many moons away, and taken up residence in a mountain, it is here you have begun to rebuild. You have endured admirably so far, despite hints and warnings of potential dangers in times ahead. And yet, the settlement of Rodinash, held together by will and hope, is barely a pup; you’re few in number, and not even all of your housing areas are finished yet, though such time is fast approaching, by all accounts. So your survival continues...

It is for this reason you’ve requested your wood and earthcrafters to design various goods- small statues, carvings of old Rinim heroes and greatfolk, such as Tato the Greatspear, who it was said was larger than any Rinim alive (or dead now, perhaps), and indeed wielded a massive spear, two hands for any other Rinim, but merely one for him. It was said his strength was such that he could throw it beyond the horizon. More than mere decoration, however, they are goods for trade, should you wish it in the future. You have to imagine that the hairless people would recognize good craftwork when they saw it- they seemed to at least have a basic notion of the art, as far as you could tell. Though, you can also clearly see that Rinim hands are crafting hands- the hairless’s hands wouldn’t do well with holding and manipulating the tools needed for delicate chiseling and cutting and sewing that fine art and precision weaponwork takes. You take some pride in that. Especially because the best works have something of their creators on them, be it a symbol or simply their name- something to let the owner know just who made the art they adore.

That said, for some Rinim, art takes a different form. You know some things about Dancers; the skilled practitioners of calling for the arcane forced of the world through motion. They use various motions through their hands, body, and tails to stir mana into a form capable of being controlled by the user’s will. It’s a bit of a misnomer, really- dancing perse isn’t required, but it's a common understanding that the more fluid and complicated a motion is, the more powerful the effect. You need only wag your finger for a small spark or a flicker of flame, but for wardancers- those that summon great gouts of flame, geysers of water, volumes of air, those take proper motion and practice, with certain spells requiring quickly executed or complicated routines. You’d never seen a need for it yourself, but...perhaps that might be time to change.

Especially as you are beginning to wonder what lies just beyond the mountain. You request a small scouting expedition; despite the cold and frost, you’re confident they can bear a bit of time out; such effort wouldn’t take the whole month, you’re certain. Indeed, Ormin agrees, and volunteers him and his trainees to take up the task, believing that ‘a quick jaunt into the backyard’ in his words is just what they need…

With full packs of rations, and a hearty farewell, you saw them off personally, interested in what news they return with…

Sadly, perfection takes time, and with the cold keeping them indoors and a general lack of vital projects, they’re all too keen on making the highest quality goods they can. Which is both good and bad, in that it might cause unrealistic expectations of quality, or in general just not be enough to sell properly.

What makes it even worse is that many are out of practice, despite the natural advantages given them- this results in a lot of frustration amongst the woodcrafters in particular as they warm up. While the locals are fine with the good produced, the woodcrafters themselves aren’t happy- and the earthcrafters aren’t too jolly, either, though their displeasure is more muted. Still, there’s time to regain their skill, and a few carvings make their way into the cavern that is now the Rodinash Treasury. You’re sure it’ll grow in time.

On the other hand, your own fascination with Dancing, originally an idle curiosity, is now a true hobby. You’d simply sat in on a few lessons before, as much to reassure the children as satiate your own curiosity, but after making a few small flames, and a small gush of water, you have to admit you can see why the little ones were so excited! That said, they are practicing in multiple forms, and then only the simple routines that Phini knows- before long, further skill will rely on their own ingenuity. So it’s the same for you, and you’ll have to find your own method of calling forth the elements...however, you can’t exactly spend all your time training, if you want to stick to this. You’ll have to dedicate yourself to one element- or as Phini describes it, one dance style. Question is, which?

>The Intensity of Flame Style: This style of dancing, when advanced, is based off of powerful, yet sudden hand movement. Like tongues of fire rising up, Flamedancing is meant to be a spectacle, demanding respect and awe. (Inspirations: Tai Chi, Tutting dance style)

>The Fluidity of Water Style: This style of dancing is all about continuous movement; difficult for beginners, but she claims that its potential is massive due to that. Much like the tide, a powerful Waterdancer can wash away any opponent under deluge of techniques they cannot defend against. (Inspirations: Breakdancing/Capoeria)

>The uncertainty of Wind Style: This is one of the more esoteric styles, and one Phini doesn’t really advocate, as it is near to the ‘unseeable’ magics under certain conditions. Winddancing for this reason all about grace and poise, as to control the wind itself is a harrowing proposition. It is about holding yourself in the face of danger and trusting your ability to escape it. (Inspirations: Ballet, Taekwondo)

Earthdancing use to exist, but Phini does not know it, and she admits that there likely is no one else who does, now…

While traditions dictate the ‘sightless’ or ‘unseeable’ magics to be forbidden...well, there is little left to enforce those old traditions. And even then, Winddancing was far from unknown or unused in society, if perhaps looked upon as a necessary evil at times. Still, there’s something poetic about it. You were called ‘Breeze of the Summer’ more for your personality than anything else...yet to be able to bring for an actual breeze and maybe more makes you giggle a bit. Of course, there’s the more...ruthless aspects of the art, but you’re not the sort to do that. Rather, it’d be nice to have some way to, say, escape from a harrowing situation, and the skill seems tailored for just that.

Your training- as much as it can be called that- is admittedly rather rough on your body- although, yes, you can make a simple woosh of wind with focus and a graceful gesture already, it’s nothing compared to the abilities you’ve heard of- making miniature tornados to sweep people off their feet (scary, honestly), providing a tailwind to travelers, and more besides. You’re panting after a scant minute or two of exertion, really- it’s far different from walking long distances. It’s in the middle of one of these attempts at training yourself that you receive word that the scouts are back- middle of the month, it seems.

When you reach them, to a one they’re immensely glad to get out of the cold, but fortunately, aside from some cuts and bruises one one or two, they seem none the worse for wear, and even have a couple of goods to show for it, it seems. “Weather did more damage than anything else,” Ormin explains. “Not too much back there- seems the mountain pairs down inta hillside. Some decent room fer expansion, if ya care for it. Was good trainin’ for the pups. S’why we took so long.” He nods at the trio, now discarding their armor and likely hoping for a trip to their new apothecary. “Got our paws on some strange, furry beast, big thing, but a snuffler- just mostly ate shoots and berries.” He motions at it; indeed it’s about as tall as the elder scout, but a fat thing, quadruped, with a large snout and small tusks. “Caught it unawares at first, though it gave us a chase after Doril scratched it with the first toss.” He gives a small glare to the scout in question, who sneers back, but says nothing. “May just be fat, may be good meat. We’ll find out which in a bit.”

Fortunately, it’s meat. It is butchered and stored as always; and your scouts are given praise and extra rations...as well as time off from training; the apothecary later states that their wounds were more severe than it seemed, and that they would need rest to recuperate properly- though recover they would.

The month ends with two more important things happening; one is that, blessedly, the sentries have reported that the air is, they think, getting warmer. The frost on the ground is melting sooner in the day, and no longer are puffs of air constantly visible when breathing. The second, is you are informed that two families are expecting!

You’ve been ignoring the metalcrafters for some time; granted, they made it somewhat easy by apparently not being too fussed about their current employ, though they did see some interest when you began stockpiling some the iron ores found in the natural course of mining and digging. However, it’s high time, you think, to restore them to work; Metalwork was always something to be proud of, and it’s time to show that once again. But in order to do so, they’ll need a proper forge to practice their craft. It’ll take time to mold and shape, and many of the tools necessary for proper Rinim-made metalworks are sadly unavailable, but what is a metalcrafter without the ability to craft their own tools if need be? They yet have a few, and that will have to be enough for now as construction begins in earnest. The precision chisels, grinding tools, and other such craft tools will come in due time- though for now you ask that good stone tools be made, which is agreed to.

In the meantime, you task them with researching just what you’ll be planning on doing with this iron; weaponry. Although you’re no fan of combat, it’d be folly to presume you’d never need it- especially when you know of at least a possible threat in the megapedes. It’s also why you task the scholars on their off hours with studying the possibility of perhaps weaponizing fire properly, in ways perhaps unrelated to Flamedancing if possible. The scholars aren’t sure of what you ask, beyond fire arrow, but they vow to look into it.

With the weather beginning to improve, your people are eager to get back out into the world- and so proves their willingness to assist in forge construction. From the stone you’ve collected, you shape and cut wood and stone for the building, the forge itself, and all else necessary. It ends up taking the last of the stockpile of wood, as well as fully half of the stone you’d stored, but it’s a worthy expenditure. With everyone working in concert, and with fervor for the desire of proper iron tools and goods, the forge is completed by the end of the month, if only barely. Its first belch of smoke in the open air, not far outside your mountain gates, is met with cheers and applause.

It’s just as well- the stone tools you’d crafted are easier to construct, to be sure, but they’re obviously less sturdy. Despite putting their best into it, they are also belabored by working the mines and finishing off the last of the dens; which at least is complete, allowing every Rinim a home, much to your satisfaction. Now, you can focus on other areas to build within the mountain. In the meantime, though, these stone tools are granted to the younger laborers as practice material, and for the experienced crafters as backup; although not quite what they hoped, they are still welcomed and utilized.

The research into fire-based weaponry, however, has proven to have some results! While the age-old art of fire arrows and flaming pitch was well known to Rinim, your scholars, poring through the few scrolls and papers they had, seem to have hit on an idea and invite you to hear of it; Juno specifically manages to find something in the old history tomes about some way to keep a heated pike scalding without warping the metal too much, similar to burning arrows, but with a different style of coating material. They’d have to experiment to see if there’s anything that could work as a substitute here, provided they couldn’t find the plant itself; what you need is the residue of a plant called ‘Crying Blue’ for the color and sap it leaks. It also claims this could be used in other fire-based applications if treated with certain minerals, as well...curious.

You’re considering sending a force out to hunt for them, when suddenly, shouting comes from the main area yelling for you. You’re quick to dismiss the meeting and head towards the inner gates, where you’re informed of more of the hairless beings; five of them, to be exact, on the outside of the gates, demanding to talk to you as leader. They’re all armed and armored, as well, although none have taken action against your fortifications, instead just yelling in 'that weird language only you know'.

(cont.)

>>4260435
You go to meet the group, standing on top of the watch tower...it does seem to be five of them. They are dressed...oddly, if you had anything to say about it. A mishmash of protective gear and clothing, vaguely brought together by the fact that all of said gear seems to be colored red, and they all seem to have backpacks. The big male in the front carries a large sword, and has more hair than the others on his face. It’s an earthen brown color, and he seems to be in a foul mood. One next to him...you THINK is younger, but you know little of these hairless, so you’re unsure. He doesn’t have nearly as much hair on his face, but has a helmet, and his armor seems to be of good metal and a complete set. He carries a spear, and looks curious.

The next two on the left are both more...curvy. Females, right. For some reason, they lack armor. One of them has an actually rather fetching robe on, it flows down the body and brings attention to the face, her curled red hair framing her young, hairless features, currently stuck in a frown as well. She has a large stick wrapped in bandages, taller than her, in fact. You’d honestly wager that you’re actually about eye level with this one.

The second female is, you believe, more mature, likely an adult. She has yellow hair, which you inwardly admit is striking, and it flows well down her back. However, she noticeably seems to proudly display her minimal hairlessness; her upper covering doesn’t quite extend to her torso, and her lower covering reveals the majority of her legs, although she does have some armor on the lower half of them at least. She seems...distraught. Nervous, even, despite the impressive bow at her back.

The last is...easily the LARGEST hairless fellow you’ve ever seen. His rounded shape as he calmly eats a stick of meat is honestly surprising... although looking closer at him, he DOES appear to have some minimal hair here and there...maybe it’s a sign of maturity or physical strength? Unsure. Regardless, his armor seems well made for him, the metal plating doing well to cover its gut and prodigious body. He seems to hardly care of the situation, preferring to focus on his meal.

Appraisal complete, you re-lock eyes with the first hairless one- he seems to be at the forefront. “You are greeted by Tasma, Breeze of the Summer, and leader of this settlement. May I ask your purpose here?”

He blinks in brief surprise, before his anger retakes hold. “Yeah!” Oh, he DOES seem annoyed. “Where the hell did you come from? Last year there weren’t any walkin’ talkin’ rats around here, I come back around an’ suddenly there’s a village? What gives?!”

Suddenly, the mature female on his left thumps him over the head lightly. “Damnit, Blaine, show some manners for once! Ahem, excuse me!” Her voice is much lighter, and easier to stand. “I’m sorry, but you see, we, er, needed to get into that mountain! We’ve been tasked with retrieving something from inside, and well, we’d rather not disappoint our patron!”

Hmph. A bit rude, these ones. But into the mountain? Your home? You’d just managed to get settled- not even a year past. You can’t just let people in wantonly! But then...what to do here?

Well. They might be rude, but it yet costs nothing to be polite back. “What item might this be? It may be that my people have found it when digging out our homes.” You stress the last word a bit just to make sure they get the picture. “Perhaps we have located it and thought it a mere trinket to be kept. I can ask my people if any have located it, if that is acceptable?”

There’s only a brief, quiet discussion amongst them before they turn back. “And if it’s there? You’ll just hand it over?”

Hm. That’s actually a good question. Certainly they could perhaps be convinced to perform a task or two if they really wanted this object, and no doubt they’d likely not be too put out considering it seemed they were prepared to labor for it in the first place- but that’s presuming you had it in the first place. If not, it just might be considered arrogance and put you on worse footing.

“Perhaps,” you hedge your bets. He frowns at that, but otherwise says nothing, looking at his fellows. To a one, they nod, and he turns back.

“It’s a ring,” he explains. “A band of metal, and in it, a gem that looks like normal gemstone, but with flecks of yellow and blue in it,” he explains. “Small, maybe palm-sized at the biggest. We were told that it would be in this mountain, in a cavern area.”

You know what a ring is, but...that’s strange. Why would a ring be here, of all places? Regardless, you haven’t heard of anyone digging such up- it sounds rather striking in appearance, and...well, then again, there MIGHT be the chance someone saw the thing and thought to keep it for themselves…

“I will make an announcement,” you decide. “Please, wait patiently.” You hope someone DID find the thing; it’d make this issue go away quite fast.

As promised, you make an announcement to the masses of your people, stating that you’re in sore need of a ring, perhaps found during the digging days, that need to be relinquished. It takes some time to discover it...but, to your great fortune, it is indeed discovered. One of the miners had found it early on, and, thinking it to be a good omen, kept it to himself- later to have granted the thing to his spouse. She is...not keen on relinquishing the object, which she regards as precious, however. This leaves you at a bit of an impasse; indeed, there’s a number of Rinim that seem to regard the situation as unfair- it was lost, then found and under much more respected ownership.

But with those individuals waiting outside...well, you admittedly worry what might come of this if they don’t get the ring…

“What if there is something else you want?” you ask. Surely there must be something she’s willing to trade for it, even here. She’s one of the clothweavers; perhaps she’d be willing to trade it for materials?

She takes a minute to think over the ask, and you can see the concentration in her face as she considers options. Her mate comes over, quick to intercede on her behalf, but she quickly shushes him with a word and light slaps of her hand. “Fabric and dye,” she eventually says. “It has been too long since I have truly been able to weave as I want. Fine fabrics, smooth and airy, and dyes of blue, red, and yellow. I wish to truly CREATE again!” she half yells, turning to her husband. “And my first will be for you, my precious…as thanks for the wonderful gift given.”

You admit the scene is sweet, but it is good that you have something to ask of the hairless in trade. It takes some time to return back to the gates, and as you get there, you see they’ve merely been sitting around, the lot of them doing...something...with thin, blocky pieces of carved wood. Some type of game, perhaps? Ah, you’d nearly forgotten about games...you always enjoyed a good round of Clackersnap- perhaps you should task the woodcrafters with making a set-

“Well?” the hairless leader says irritably, throwing you out of your reviere. “You got it or not?”

“We do,” you say, and allow them a moment of levity. “A band of steel, and yellow with blue dots, as stated. Are there any risks to simply bringing it out, or any procedures to follow?” you ask.

“Nah, nah,” the leader says, clearly in a much better mood. “I dunno if it does anything, but if it did, I imagine he’d have told us. Nah, just throw it down and we’ll be outta your hair.”

“Unfortunately, I cannot.” you state, and his mood immediately drops.

“What?! Why not?!” he asks.

“It is in the possession of one of our valued clothweavers. She is partial to it, and requests a trade, in compensation. I think this would be acceptable, considering we have located your object and, if my guess is correct, saved you much trouble in searching for it.”

“What the- the hell do you even want for it?” he asks irritably. The others seem distraught as well, even the female that initially tried to restrain him.

Well, you’ll press on. “She desires fabric and dye to ply her trade. Fine woven fabric is preferable, and she wishes for three colors of dye- red, blue, and yellow. Large amounts of each. Is that acceptable?”

“...gaah, huddle!” he says, and the lot of them turn to each other, leaning over and speaking in low tones once again. You wonder what they’re saying...

Eventually, however, they break up, and look back up towards you. “Fine. You’ll get yer dyes and fabric and shit. But you better pay up once we’re back!”

“Of course,” you affirm. With that, they head off- past the lake, and back into the trees.

I'll begin running shortly now, within the hour. If no other votes come in that time, I'll use the results of this flip for the tiebreak between 1- Crafting Tools and 2- Researching Local Flora.

From here on in, you'll have estimates to work with after you vote on things to make.

For example, for workshops (presuming you mean at least one tailor's, one woodcrafter's workshop, and one earthcrafter's workshop, that takes a lot of wood. You had a lot before, but this is basically building up a village proper now. Estimate set at:

Thinking about what those skinless said...village. That’s what it looked like to them? Well, to be fair, they didn’t actually SEE the inside. You had a deal of room, certainly enough for new buildings...but there were no buildings to speak of.

Time to fix that, you think. You’ve no wood to work with, however, but with the weather warming, you quickly make the declaration that the craftsrats of your settlement shall have proper workspaces outside. This WILL be a proper village before long, and the first step to that is gathering more wood. The storm’s stockpiles have run out, and so it’s time to do things as intended.

The morning after you proclaim this, you have the woodcrafters and more than a few farmers skilled in logging, armed with axes and cutters send out. However, Scholar Phini has a request, actually- she wishes to take the children out on a bit of a sojourn, to practice felling trees, likely with focused magics. You’re unsure of this, considering their inexperience…

>But, then, there’s few ways to gain such experience. Agree to it.

It’s a hard decision- there could be valuable experience to be gained. It’s not live targets, and they’d be supervised…

But no. You yet don’t know the area as well as you’d like, the chill yet remains even if it’s warming up, and the risk of fires or other possible damage is too much. “I cannot agree to that,” you mention, and though she is disappointed, she doesn’t argue the point.

It’s during a day early on of logging, barely a week or so past that you get wind of the skinless folk returning. Taking the clothweaver with you to affirm quality, you meet them just as before. They seem to have kept to their word...and exactly to their word. “Here,” their leader says gruffly, dragging the large rolls of fabric out of his pack as his mature female ally takes some. “Three bolts of linen fabrics, and six jars of dye, two apiece.” The jars are as big as your head… “Now, how’sabout that ring?”

You look at the clothweaver, who frowns, but nods, as she whispers to you. “That much will serve well. If it is of good quality, much can be made from it.” Well...a deal’s a deal. You have two of the guards retrieve the goods, and after a last kiss, the clothweaver casually underhands the ring down to the warrior, who catches it in a single hand. Snorting lightly, he nods. “Well, then. I think our business is done?”

You nod. “It is. May you be well on your journeys.”

“Yeah, yeah,” he mutters, though he and his friends do wave farewell. His male friend in particular seems to give a long look to you and the clothweaver, before shrugging and catching up with his allies. Well...at least they went peacefully. Though something about it leaves you worried...

>Obtained Fabric (300 Units)

Nonetheless, you put it out of your mind for now. Logging efforts are in full swing, and your Rinim are quick to put them to use; the woodcrafting workshop is completed first, as it would be put to use the fastest. With several areas for at least half the crafters there to work at once, there may need to be some sort of sharing plan set up for all of them, but it’s far better than having to work out in the elements. Similarly, the Earthcrafter’s shop is simple, but wide; more than enough for their needs, with a place to store incomplete works, as well as future material. The tailor’s shop is the easiest; the clothweavers mostly needing just space to work, though spinning wheels and some other tools are requested as well, prompting a number of orders from the newly willing to work craftsrats.

By the end of the month, some bits and bobs are still needed here and there, but by and large the open area in the front of the mountain gates is awash with the sounds of industry. One crisp morning in particular, you step out to make the rounds, and feel the gentle kiss of the sun as you hear and see Rinim out and about, working and building. Even the children playing hide and chase... it almost feels like home again.

Thinking about it, you could use this opportunity to stretch your growth even more! Perhaps you could make proper, free standing houses! You’re not entirely certain they’d be useful in the short term, but if nothing else, the nobles might like it- they’ve been remarkably quiet aside from a few general complaints over the past year, which you appreciate. This might do well to show their thanks. Not to mention, should families continue to grow, they’ll need somewhere to stay, won’t they? Speaking of which, the two mothers to be (of an Earthcrafter and of a Farmer) both seem to be doing well. With the settlement’s population low as it is, the two are treated with relative reverence, and are closely watched and taken care of. Yes, they’ll definitely need space. Estimates come in after you inform the Woodcrafters of this requirement; this is more what they’re used to, so you trust their accuracy.

>90 Wood needed for five houses.

However, the amount needed is...a bit beyond what you have right now. You’ll have to cut as you go, which will cause delays.

>Will need to cut wood as needed.

Well, regardless, for such work, better tools will be needed as well. Good saws, hammers, and other such things, made of proper, freshly forged iron. The metalworkers are more than ready to put their craft to work, not to mention it’ll help with work in the future.

>10 Iron needed for tools.

And with all this...clothes. Ancients, you need proper clothes; the ones you and yours have been wearing are largely either rags, furs, or rarely, old wear the escapees saw fit to take with them- this was largely the nobles, scouts, and metalcrafters, as it was required for their work. EVERYONE would do well with better clothes. Fortunately, the clothweavers readily agree, and there’s practically a line of every adult Rinim in the settlement as they take orders; they suspect they’ll be working near around the clock for a while, but only one of them has any annoyance with that fact- the others are just happy to be working properly.

>200 Fabric needed for re-clothing the settlement.

Ultimately, it’s all about getting proper civilization back to the Rinim, and you intend to see it happen as quickly as possible. The farmers should soon be ready to plant seeds properly this time, and the year's cold season passing makes you hopeful that with this fresh start in nature, will be the proper flourishing of a Rinim colony.

The eagerness for getting houses is infectious...perhaps too much so. There’s a number of interested parties to do the work- and not quite enough tools to go around. Although no one gets hurt, there’s a number of arguments that must be broken up, and more than once a fight breaks out and needs to be quelled. It’s a bit unnerving, considering how amiable everyone’s been up until this point, but you suppose peace can’t last forever...it causes delays in the woodcutting, and even then, the amount done day by day isn’t nearly enough, and with two of the nobles arguing for their own houses to come first, it’s causing severe bottlenecks in what work DOES get done. You don’t suspect they’ll be finished very soon at this rate…

>Current Wood: 40

On the plus side, the tools issue is solved partway through the month; the metalworkers are more than eager to put their skill to use, and nails, chisels, hammers, axes, and saws are crafted throughout the month. Swords and spears are discussed, but those are met with some reluctance- for a good, effective, and sturdy sword takes time to forge, and spears only slightly less so. Not to mention, you don’t exactly have much in the way of military...still, you have all you need- plus a bit, actually: a few metalworks made by the duo when they found a small break in orders, as well as a touch of spare metal. A few small utensils, and a small engraving, a metal portrait... it’s very basic in design, but it’s clearly a young lady rat...leading a group of rats from what looks like a cave into the light.

Obvious what it meant, but…a bit embarrassing. Still, it’s worth keeping, so into the Treasury it goes.

>Obtained 1 Fine Quality Metal Etching!

>Current Iron Ore: 35

The clothing issue, as well, is more than welcome as a challenge for the clothweavers, and the sounds of stitching, cutting, sewing...and gossip...emanate from the tailor’s shop at all hours of the day. They even manage something for you one day- a bright yellow, flowing dress that doesn’t quite hit your ankles, something closer to what you used to wear. A few light frills on the hem, darling extra folds down the front...ah, if only you had a hat. Still, it’s more than welcome, and for this first round of work, this is free? Lovely.

Interestingly, it’s not long that you have that outfit, that you see...well, according to the guards, there are more hairless. Although these look different, supposedly. “They look fancier,” the guard says. “They assumed I knew what they were saying, though. So you need to talk to them.” Ah. May have to find some way to rectify that soon…

(cont.)

“Hello?” you ask. “You are greeted by Tasma, Breeze of the Summer, and leader of this settlement. I wish you well.” These four are all in similar armor, but as said, they’re fancier. Or at least better put together. Simple steel armor, but embellished with strange symbols on their shoulders that resemble a large bird. One of them in particular is squat and stout with a large steel hammer, maybe half the height of the others, and with a thick brown beard. There’s a female as well, taller than both her male compatriots. A bit thin, too, even in the face, but very nice, long red hair. The other male vaguely resembles the hairless male you met before, but you’re not very good at telling the difference, yet...you think the other male has more hair, and he seems to be in slightly less armor around the waist.

“So...Blaine wasn’t jokin’...” he mutters. You don’t think he meant you to hear, as he speaks up louder at you. “Ah, hallo there!” He puts on a friendly smile. “Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Captain Brennan, of the Falcon Legion.” He motions to his compatriots. “The short stout fellow is Garand, the fellow behind me is Croix, and the lady to my right is Lieutenant Ylain. We’re a...voluntary scout force, currently working for the Kingdom of Helias. We were hoping to open a dialogue with you, as we got word that you were...relatively recent arrivals, so to speak.”

Oh? Dear. “May I ask why?”

“Unfortunately, we were told to keep it as low-profile as possible,” he admits, grimacing slightly. “Not exactly great to hear, I understand, but…” he shrugs. “I can promise you that we mean no harm, however. But the King and Queen are curious about you and yours.”

>Lynne says with a smile. “The Temple is maybe a day and a half’s trip north from here;
we should totally visit the Temple before the meeting and get as much info about this Kingdom as possible. This is super sketchy, I think they want to continue their expansion now that they know that there's a buffer zone between them and the Horgoth.

Well, this is worrisome. You’re just a small settlement; what could the leaders of a kingdom want with you? Tribute? But this isn’t their land, you were told...they could’ve been lying, mind you. But you didn’t get the feeling they were. An assassination attempt, maybe? Or perhaps some sort of forced integration...eeegh, you can’t think of much good here.

But it’d be foolish to deny them outright. They look as though they’re well-trained, and they’re obviously well-armed and armored. And no doubt there’s MANY more of them than there are of you. But perhaps you can at least do this on your terms. “Very well,” you say, and you can see the male breath a sigh of relief. “However, I request this occurs in a neutral area; my people are unused to your appearance, and may not understand your presence.”

Fortunately, he seems to get the gist. “Completely understandable. We can set up something formal, then? The Kingdom of Helias and...” he trails off, realizing he doesn’t know the name of your settlement.

“The Rinim Settlement of Rodinash,” you respond.

“Right! Helias and Rodinash, then. Let’s say in a week?”

Oh. That’s a bit soon. “Perhaps a month?”

He frowns, and shakes his head. “Way too far out. I can do up to ten days. Enough time to get a message to the capital on horseback, looked at, and back. Sorry. But do you happen to have somewhere in mind?”

Ten days isn’t very long...you’ll have to travel with a small retinue to make it anywhere reasonable in such a timeframe.

It takes a moment to think on it. You don’t want anything too close to the settlement, but also revealing a potential relationship with the Temple of the Shrouded Eye wouldn’t be a good idea, either. That said, there IS one spot you can think of that may work. “We understand that there is an abandoned tower to the west.”

It takes him a minute to think of it, but he and his react with a bit of surprise when it hits him. “Tower Greydawn? You’ve been out that way?” Ylain speaks. Her voice is high and lilting. It’s impressive, almost song-like.

Regardless, you decide not to answer, instead ploughing on. “We will meet there.” When it comes to negotiations, it usually pays to act like there’s little to no room for dispute when control of the conversation is handed to you. “We will see you in ten days then, correct?”

To be fair to the captain, he doesn’t seem to hesitate. “Right, sounds like a plan. I’ll let the Royal Family know. Pleasure meeting you. Alright, people,” he says, turning to his allies. “We’re done here for now.” With that, they leave, taking the long way around to avoid your farms. You get a distinct sense of deja vu from all this…

..but you’ll have to ignore that, as you most definitely need to take a trip.

It’s high time you finally spoke to the Shrouded Eye. “I need Warriors willing to journey.” You suspect you’ll have no shortage of volunteers.

You indeed end up with three of the warriors, plus one of the scout trainees looking to get some experience. The trip sets out the next day, and is blessedly uneventful. Although you have to spare time to rest, you indeed get there in a day’s time plus some; the only thing really guiding you being said scout. They prove themselves worthwhile indeed, finding something resembling a pathway due to worn plants, trampled underfoot and signs of disturbed brush. It’s not long before you manage to see further signs of life...and then you step beyond a pair of trees to behold.

It’s a massive stone structure, built into the side of a mountain, vaguely like your own settlement. The front is a massive half-domed entrance, with pillars supporting it. Otherwise, aside from the size, it is relatively simple in design, save for the massive series of steps that lead up to its front doors; several hairless beings in robes like Orville’s meander around or on them in various states of discussion. Discussion that stops when one by one, they turn to your retinue, and look on in surprise.

There’s a moment where it seems no one is sure what to say- indeed, you have to take a moment to orient yourself, but you ARE the first to speak. “Hello.”

Fortunately, there’s no panic. Instead, one of the individuals slowly raises a hand in greeting. “H-Hello?”

“Yes. You are greeted by Tasma, Breeze of the Summer. You have my thanks. The one who invited us was one Orville…” drat, you forgot the second name he gave. “...some time back. We understand that your facility retains a great deal of knowledge. We would like to make use of it, if possible.” There. Formal, polite, namedropped as best you could.

The hairless look to each other, several shrugging. The one who spoke first speaks again. “Uh...we can go and ask for you if you can wait here a bit?” She says- although she phrases it as a question.

“That is fine, thank you,” you agree. Best to play by their rules. It doesn’t take too long, at least, before someone comes out; a pair of someone’s, actually. The first, you can somewhat recognize as Orville. The second is… well, he’s not hairless. In fact, he’s got the most hair you’ve seen so far (aside from perhaps the short fellow, Garand). It’s thick and busy and black, and you wonder what the difference is. “Aha! And here I thought you’d forgotten us!” Orville says excitedly. “I was wondering just how you’d fared during the winter- I hope all was well?”

You nod. “We survived ably. I thank you for your concern.”

“Now, I’d like to introduce our Chief Academic, Norimund. He’s expressed interest in learning about you...although I understand you’re also interested about us, as well?”

“I am, yes. I’ve gotten into an unfortunate issue, and I seek your aid.” you admit.

“Hmmm…” Norimund strokes his hair in contemplation. “Then we shall trade information.”

You’re escorted through the hallways- it’s a massive complex, practically seeming to wind through the mountain itself- to be sure it puts your own efforts to shame. And yet, it does give you a bit of inspiration. Such as the varying levels they have...it’d take a lot of work, though. Far more than you’ve exerted already, and that’s not even mentioning the- ah.

As you decide on what to talk about, you turn to the Academic, who seems interested in hearing what you have to say. “Well. Perhaps I should start with these insect creatures in our mountain…”

As you two converse, you learn a number of things, after being taken around the Temple, in a way of both giving you a tour and showing you directly to the various pieces of information you want. Apparently the megapede that you encountered is called a Peliaspid, and it’s normally considered a vicious predator of an insect, eating both meat and fungus when necessary. It is fortunately primarily a solo hunter, but has been known to form ‘collectives’ in order to take down a large amount of prey, whether in size or numbers. The rest of your summations prove accurate- its shell melts quickly in fire but otherwise is impressive in its defensive capabilities, its mandibles are used in crafting certain types of weapons, and several parts of its body are edible, and considered delicacies to certain folks. Although he doesn’t know how many there are, he suggests caution- and good armor. They have no other way to kill their prey besides brute force, so if your armor can withstand their piercing power, you’re fine. Though he takes a glance at your Warriors’ armor and guesses that they’re not in such a position right now…

The Horgoth are a cloven hoofed, thick horned race that lives off in virtually all of the eastern mountain range, the Redhoof Mountains. They’ve laid claim to a large portion of the area- including right outside of where you live now. He cautions that they may not take kindly to your intrusion...or they may not care. Due to a war that took place here some decades ago, they rarely come down from the mountains now, save for necessary trade. The Temple provided a mediating presence, and so they were granted autonomy in the area. Otherwise, they’re a very rigid race, with very specific rules and rites and culture. It’s apparently said this is because they are distant descendants of demons, and need such rules to keep from indulging in their baser desires. One of those rules essentially being ‘don’t leave the homeland unless it’s important.’

When you ask about the region, he chuckles, and shows you to a simple desk, where you’re granted a basic map. He warns that it may not be wholly accurate these days, as the last map was crafted some time ago, and a new one is sorely needed.

In particular, it shows a few things you weren't aware of- such as the presence of a large lake named 'Lake Alder' north of you. Biggest in the region, it seems.

Although, it’s as you’re looking at this that you realize you need to get to the root of things. “I was wondering about the state of the Kingdom of Helias’s character. What kind of kingdom is it? What of its lands, its people?”

“Ahhh…” he strokes his beard in understanding. “Hmm. The Kingdom of Helias is a kingdom which possesses a...troubled history. Yes, troubled, I’d say.” He walks over to an empty table to sit down, and you and your retinue join him at a gesture. “It is no warmongering kingdom- at least, not for the purpose of simply shedding blood. But its royal lineage is one steeped in betrayal and mistrust, in trying to grasp things that exceed their reach, and, ultimately...paying for it. Dearly. In the commoner streets, coin is currency, same as any kingdom. But in the royal halls, tis information and willing allies that are what is valued.” He sighs. “They tried, at first, to expand hereabouts. I’ve told you the consequences of that, regarding the Horgoth. So next, they tried to reach across their shores- well to the west, to another continent entirely. Thought they would create quite the expansive kingdom- and they weren’t the only ones to think so. Dwarvenkind, Elvenkind, many others made their way west, all intending to claim their piece of history. Alas...many different peoples all wanting the same thing in one place? There could only be one solution for that,” he murmurs. “From what I’m aware of, the conflict still burns to this day, though it is embers of what used to be a horrible flame. Many innocents have fled, and I hope mightly for their safety.”

You can certainly understand THAT. “But what of them now?”

He sighs. “There is little appetite for more conflict amongst the commonfolk. Many folk amongst the common class are good folk, wanting merely stability. But the royal administration is yet eager to make something of these debacles, from what talk I hear. I would not be surprised if they saw some type of possibility or even fear with your peoples; though what they may have in mind, I cannot say.”

Hm. That is...concerning. You'll have to speak carefully at this meeting, it seems like.

"My thanks for your information," you offer, which he returns with a smile.

"It's no great matter. Ah, but for your end of the exchange. Perhaps we could adjourn to my record taking room. I'm most curious to know more of you and your kind. Your eating habits, for instance..."

It is...a bit odd to talk about Rinim in such detached terms, but...you'll try.

You spend several hours dealing with him- he wants to know much of you, such as your own history, which you’re fine with detailing. The horrors of the Redjaws are...difficult to recollect, but he treats it as the tragedy it is, at least, solemn throughout the retelling- and allowing you to recompose yourself after you break down a bit during your telling of the last days you were there. He asks if this area is possibly threatened by them, to which you honestly don’t know. You don’t think so, as you weren’t chased, but you never know…

Aside from that, he talks about things such as lifestyle and culture, objects products (to which you proclaim Rinim intricacies and detailing to be superior to anything you’ve seen so far- including in here; he just finds the claim curious and amusing) and biology; when you mention the two pregnancies, he offers his congratulations and well-wishes, which you accept.

Before long, you find your purpose for being here completed. With the information you have, ideally you’ll be able to catch them off guard a bit. “I know not whom they’ll send for discussion,” Norimund had opined after you explained the situation. “However, they tend to send a member of the royal family for serious discussions. Rarely the King Parcelus or Queen Amerie, but more commonly Prince Marcel, Second Prince Johannes, or perhaps the Grand Minister, Cerin.” He nods to himself, considering this. “The Prince is very much a mother’s boy, largely bullish on his opinions, and has little in the way of compromising sense. Both a blessing and a curse for you, I’d say. The Second Prince, however, is more open to discourse- if only because he is...well, a bit of a philanderer.” You have to think about what that means, even with your magically induced understanding of the language. “He’s rather known for being...very inclusive in regards to what he finds attractive.” You have the good grace to blush. “As for the Grand Minister, he is fully dedicated to his liege. Anything that may get you a positive opinion with the King would be welcome in his books.”

“My thanks for such valuable information,” you offer sincerely.

“Frankly, I find your race fascinating, and wish to see you flourish,” he admits. “Independently, as opposed to, say, a vassal state. Any way I can help would be welcome.”

Well, while this place isn’t bad at all, you have places to be; and perhaps you can come back once this ordeal has passed, and with a token of thanks, even.

For now...you need to get back to Rodinash as soon as possible, and be quick to set out towards Castle Greydawn.

However, the question is how to present yourself?

You don’t exactly have a great deal of martial might, so instead you decide to focus on trade goods. You ask for some fabric patterns from the clothweavers, and a wooden and stone carving from the Treasury, as well as the metal etching; all as examples, of course, and not actually intended to be traded. Ideally, they’ll see your works and be convinced to, at best, leave you alone and simply trade whatever you might need for whatever you can spare. With that and two Warriors that both have seen the area, you think (you hope) you’re set! With a deal of hope, you set off, to much fanfare and well wishes amongst your people.

“My lady, are you certain that this will be safe?” one of them asks as you leave.

You’re honestly uncertain. “I trust they’ll not be so vicious immediately.” It’s a lot of blind faith, with perhaps exception of the words of the Temple, but it’s all you have.

The travel time is...honestly, somewhat pleasant. You travel via the same path you arrived here on- one of your own making, that is, and one that is only done through memory. Still, it is relatively calm- any predators to fear have not exited hibernation, it seems. You DO witness a horde of strange beasts on your path there- long, tubular furry bodies with sharp teeth almost as big as you. You’re worried at first, but they seem content to merely hiss and chatter at you- there’s a brief moment of worry, but you manage to pass by what you can only guess is a migration path or something without conflict.

After about five days of travel, you arrive there; you’re early. The Tower Greydawn is...surprisingly large. You’d imagined just a tower by itself, from what was described to you. It’s not; it’s a full structure, complete with a central courtyard, some small wings, and at least a number of smaller rooms attached. No wonder they thought it’d be useful…

But, to your surprise, there’s also someone else there. Two someones; neither of which seem...particularly regal, if you had to ask. One is a female (you think) and the other is a male. Both have little in the way of armor, instead wearing simple garments; the female with a flowing dress that’s...honestly fairly frumpy and unflattering, as well as a headscarf. The male has similar, but it’s pants instead of a dress. They both seem to be in the process of cleaning the area, with the male trimming many weeds, and the female removing various detritus.

They both stop and stare in surprise upon seeing you. The female is the first to react “O-oh?! Oh no, oh no, is it time already?” Her frizzy hair seems to shiver almost, as she seems almost scared. “We’re not done yet!”

“Well, ah, it seems they’re just early, perhaps? The Prince wouldn’t have just not said anything, right?” he says in her direction before turning to you. “Ah, forgive us, honored guests, we’re still in the midst of preparing…” My, this may be awkward for the next few days.

“You are greeted by Tasma, Breeze of the Summer, and leader of this group. I wish you well.” you give a little nod and bow in welcome, to which they seem...surprised.

“Ah! Er, I am Lorne, and my fellow here is Vernon. We were sent by the Prince to clean the area ahead of his arrival,” the female explains. “I beg your forgiveness for the mess…!”

“It’s of no concern,” you dismiss. “Please, we’ll not interrupt you further.” You’d rather stay out of their way and instead focus on the more important fellow to come. That, and the tower itself, at least in how its architecture is curious.

They nod in agreement. “We were not expecting you today, but we have cleaned sleeping quarters on the third floor in case discussions took long, or if either party wished to rest for a night before returning.”

“My thanks,” you offer, as you proceed past them. They return to their duties, and you take the time to explore the area with your group. It’s rather...well, curious. The rocks aren’t really carved with any intricate care, rather they’re very...well, blocky. It all gives a very foreboding feel, as opposed to the glamour and artistry you’re used to with stone creations. Not to mention of course the sheer height of it, which is both fascinating and terrifying- especially when you dare to take a look down from the top and immediately deign that to have been a horrible idea. Even IF you got a wondrous view of the various fields and the village in the distance.

Fortunately, the rest of the next two days is...relatively calm. You go over how you’ll be behaving with regards to the Prince- you should be polite and formal, but strict and no pushover. Who knows what they’ll ask of you, should they decide you’re a potential resource to take advantage of. That, plus observing and possibly planning escape, should it be necessary…

(cont.)
>>
>>4272964
But before you know it, the days have passed; and in a stroke of brilliance, you decide to behave as though you hadn’t gotten there so soon, and indeed, you position yourself just outside the gates as you see a number of creatures- mounts of some kind, with thick chests and necks and four long legs run up, riders astrid. Seven of them, specifically. 4 being the individuals you met before. Two of them being a male and female, both in long (if plainish) cloaks and circlets around their heads. And at the head of the procession?

His headfur is of a long length, golden colored like wheat. Eyes a sharp green, and quick to take in the scene he now finds himself in. As he dismounts, his white cape floats behind him, fuzz ringing the edges of it, and he himself is dressed in sky white armor...though it seems to expose his torso a bit, and his legs as well, revealing a blue undershirt. It still shines well, however, and you can see the hilt of a blade under his cape; for self-defense, you hope. Still, as they approach, he flashes a smile, and bows with a flourish. “Ah, I believe you may be the leader of our new neighbors, as told by the Falcon Legion. I am Prince Marcel of the Kingdom of Helias. A pleasure to meet you.”

So. This is one of the hairless’s leaders…

You’re quick to introduce yourself, and he invites you in. “I hope you’ve not spent much time waiting.”

“Not at all,” you insist.

“Then, let us begin, shall we?” his smile is bright, and you can’t help but worry. Things start immediately after you’re brought to a table and get through the formalities. “I’ll be quite frank- the news of a new race moving in where there once was none surprised me. We’ve not had such a thing...well, ever, I think. According to the Legionnaires that reported to me, yours is a small colony, correct?”

“It is,” you respond. Your numbers are...far from adequate.

He nods, leaning forward. “So then, I’m curious; what is it you want here? Merely a place to settle, new land to cultivate and thrive in? You’re fortunate you’ve settled near an area where there IS some civilization- I’d be surprised if you’d not been at least noticed by the Temple of the Shrouded Eye by now. Normally, those woods have a deal of fierce beasts in there, save for that area thanks to them.”

>Keep the reasons for your resettlement out of conversation- he may use it as leverage to get whatever he might want.

So, in case if the negotiations go well, what do we want and what can we offer? We can make small luxury goods made out of wood, stone, leather and metal, maybe we can take commissions later on. As for the stuff we need, maybe some draft animals appropriate for our size like ponies, donkeys and goats, or materials that we can't produce ourselves yet, like cloth and glass?
>>
>>4273172
I think a lot of what we need is semi processed stuff like cloth and dye and what we can offer is fine goods and art which we can make out of said goods.
>>
>>4273172
Steel, iron, coal, anvils and tools whatever else we need to kickstart our industry to be self sufficient.

Information we can buy from the temple, for example if the rinim don't know about mortar. Being able to construct stone buildings would be nice.
>>
>>4273252
We seem to have a good source of iron so maybe just coal for now
>>
>>4273252
>>4273261
I have no idea why would we need coal right now, and there's a forest two steps away from our cave. The draft animals could carry the trade goods, work the fields, carry rocks and ores from the mines and would help with construction efforts. Basically, cheap labor that doesn't count as slavery.
>>
>>4273529
I never said that we shouldn't negotiate for animals?

The process of making coal from wood is slow, labor intensive and quite inefficient, we don't even know if the rinim know how to do it. If the kingdom have real coal mines that would be a good source until we have industry.

You nod. “Quite accurate.” You’re not going to tell him the full deal, but it’s not a lie, and he can come to hopefully reasonable conclusions himself as to why. “We were unaware anyone lived beyond the Howling Chasm, and so we deemed it worthwhile to attempt to pass. So far, it appears our efforts were well-rewarded.”

He nods in approval, a small smile on his face. “Quite fortunate to hear. No major losses?”

You frown. “Some…” it was inevitable in such a situation. The exceptionally old, on occasion, or illness took someone. Fortunately, though… “...but few. We are thankful for that.”

“Quite. Really, I’m just glad you’re not here to invade us. Of course, considering your...situation, I have to admit, I’m a touch curious about your long-term plans for survival.” And here he leans forward a bit, and he gets a look in his eye you can recognize, even across species- the look of mercantilism, the possibility of a deal. “You’ve got some manner of military, I can presume, looking at your guard. Impressive metalworking, really. But there’s a rather...ornery collective to the east of your- they’re called the Horgoth. Nasty pieces of work, really. Just as like, if they come to learn you’re near what they call ‘their’ territory, they may seek to extort you- that or possibly drive you out. You’ve already got a reasonable defensive setup, if what the Legion tells me is true and you’re based around a mountain. I daresay the Kingdom of Helias could assist with that; we’re rather capable in martial matters, and I’ve little doubt that perhaps we could come to an agreement of sorts in exchange for getting your settlement some proper arms.”

“Agreement?” you find yourself repeating. Just what does he have in mind…?

He nods. “Quite. Perhaps, say, assistance with surveying new areas for us, or perhaps aiding in mining endeavors, as I presume you’re working with metals and ores, yes?”

“We do more than that,” you admit, seeing an opening as you request one of the warriors to bring forth your bag. “These are a few samples of Rinim crafting; of cloth, wood, stone, and metal.” You’re quick to lay them out, and you can see a few eyes widen at the sight.

“Impressive detail…” the cloaked lady mutters. The male leans over, whispering something in his ear- it causes the Prince to look at him in mild surprise, but he quickly schools his face back into something neutral.

“Hm. Well then…” This is when it starts- proper negotiations. This, you can at least admit, you are good with.

>Keep things strictly to a trade deal; you want nothing more to do with their society.
>Suggest you’re willing to perhaps aid them in certain, non-conflicting endeavors if they make it worthwhile.

if we agree then we'd basically be doing all the scouting work for the pink-things and keeping our scouts away from their own lands, making it easier for them to occupy our territory under the pretext of protection from Horgoth. And if the hornies notice that we were armed by the Kingdom then they could assume that we're already allies. The mining deal is no better, we'd be providing war materials for a potential invader.
They can have an exclusive deal on our products or something.

The idea of possibly putting you in their debt is...unappealing, to say the least. You’d rather not have that. Instead, you angle for more of an equal trade deal; you have goods you can make, and goods you cannot obtain easily. They have goods they can make and cannot obtain easily. At first, he seems a bit disappointed about the idea; it’s clear he was hoping for something more- what that ‘more’ is, clearly seems to be using your physical differences to their advantage, in exchange for certain goods. You’re rather not keen on that, and let him know. He’s worried you would rather break things off entirely, but you insist that something could be done that he’d consider worthwhile, and he’s convinced to stay.

Ultimately, you’re met with a few offers; he insists that none are exclusive and you’re free to take as many or as few as you like, though he rather overtly hints that should you take more, that’ll ‘strengthen relations’ all the better and likely get you a few ‘perks’- though what those perks are, he keeps to himself, stating ‘they come and go, sadly. Such is the nature of business and society.’ With these deals, he also informs you of some interesting national political tidbits, stating that ‘better they come from me than the distorted rumor mills’.

>The kingdom’s being squeezed dry by dwarven trade prices for their military metalworks, which are stated to be ‘top-class’. If you can design blades of equal or similar quality (which he believes you can, looking at your Warrior’s spears), he’s willing to offer ‘Helias’s finest grains and produce.’ (Trade 30 Units of Iron per month for 60 units of Food.)

>He states that considering your apparent skill with clothing, he and many others would pay handsomely for well-crafted objects such as scarves, gloves, and other such accessories, made out of animal hide or fabrics. (Trade 150 units of fabric for 1d50*100 amount of gold per month. Gold allows you to purchase many goods and services, such as simple adventurers or mercenary bands.)

>Elven made bowcraft and other woodworks are similarly rising in prices due to ‘issues abroad’. If you can shoulder some of the burden at a lesser cost, they’d be happy to supply you with smallbeasts and beasts of burden to help carry yours (and their) goods, not to mention assist with fieldwork. (Trade 30 Units of Wood per month for 60 units of Food.)

>Although he doesn’t see a direct trade market for your stoneworking, he believes there would be no shortage of work in the capital, if not the royal house itself, and is willing to exchange two Earthcrafters on a temporary work basis (3 months) for an Elite Individual of your choice to train your Rinim in advanced profession skills. The chief academic said they are no warmongers and then we get these deals. Yeah, right.

You aren’t keen on supplying them with weapons of war, but...well, perhaps wooden bows and the like wouldn’t be too difficult. You’re in a woodland area, for goodness’ sake, and the number they’re asking isn’t too vicious, you think- they’re not asking you to take over elven production (whatever elves ARE), just asking you to take over a portion of the order. You’ll have to adjust for hairless’s sizeable hands, though- from what you can tell, the males are a bit under twice as tall as an average Rinim, and the females only a bit shorter than that. That, and the Stoneworking idea is worth merit- not because you trust them, mind, but because you’ll have collateral of your own in citizens of their society, and you’ll be able to get much needed information on them. There IS one issue, however...you’re the only one to speak their language. You’ll have to ask Orville for help on that, again...in fact, it might be a good idea to see about teaching the language once it’s imparted to a few others.

Nonetheless, he seems satisfied at your agreements, if perhaps less excited than initially. “Well, then! It appears that we have an accord! Now, we can put this agreement in writing, and I’ll have it noted by my associates here- both quite skilled magi.”

“Magi?” you find yourself asking. You’ve never heard of that…

“Indeed!” he seems proud at this. “Some of our best users of the arcane arts. Perhaps you’re unaware, but our kind are capable of control of the elements themselves, provided you are of the right birth. The path to doing so itself is a secret bound to the nation, but it is quite possible; if you would witness…” He holds out his hand aiming at a random spot on the ground, and- “Incenda!” A plume of fire engulfs his hands before shooting out and impacting the ground in a short burst. You allow yourself a bit of surprise; that was fast. You think Firedancers could replicate the maneuver, but not so brusquely.

“Ah, but any interest in that can be saved for later, hm?” He seems a bit cheeky, now. “I think we can move on to discussing proper terms and whatnot…”

Before long, your names are writ on the contracts he’s provided- he’s surprised at your written language, but you insist that is it. “Very well, then! We will send along a carriage to pick up your most esteemed...you called them Earthcrafters, correct? Quaint. Now, as for your part of the trade, what individual would you be requesting?”

'Quaint.' You'd rather verbally cuff him for that, but...decorum. Instead, you decide that seeing how the Magi work in comparison to your own Dancers might be worthwhile- there may be techniques you can translate to Dancing, ideally. He chuckles when he hears your choice. “Oho, can’t say I’m too surprised. Not to worry, then, we’ll have one of our Magi on their way in a matter of days-”

“I’ll go,” one of the cloaked hairless says; the male. This seems to come as a surprise to the Prince, judging from his expression- not to mention the female’s. “They seem interesting.”

“Oh, Levi? Really?” Surprisingly, the Prince seems a bit uncertain of this. “You’re one of our Chief Magi, true, but…”

“I’ll be fine,” he assures as he removes his hood. His face is slim, although still largely hairless save for the usual bits you’ve noticed on the tops of their heads and above their eyes- he lacks any around his lower face like you’ve seen some, save for a tiny patch of black fur on his...chin? “It’ll be curious to see a new race’s culture.”

Hm. Well, then. The Prince seems worried about this, but eventually he nods. “Very well. Give us some time, and we’ll send him along.”

You nod; best not to aggravate the situation. “Of course. He will be welcome.”

“As will yours into Helias,” the Prince promises.

With that, after a bit more general to-do, including some reasonably palatable food courtesy of the cleaning hairless, you deem business done, with the promise that early next month the trade will occur.

Your travel home is filled with worry and concern, as well as possibly a bit of hope. If nothing else, the fact that you are approaching a year’s time in this new land is something worthy of good cheer, and as you return, you are heralded with cheers at your continued existence. Although many are concerned about the deal brokered, to your surprise, the Earthcrafters are less so, with four of them expressing interest in going to learn about another race’s earthcraft- though you suspect they’re just trying to outdo them at their own game, judging from the gossip...

All things considered? It’s high time you indeed made note of the fact that you made it. You’re here. You all SURVIVED.

And so the call is made for a celebration! Water is taken from the lake, and leaves from the homeland are brewed for teas- nothing intoxicating for now, but no Rinim you know have ever been much the sort. Beasts are hunted, grains are harvested, and, most importantly (by your personal insistence) wood is gathered, in abundance, you ordered. Not for the trade deal, necessarily, which is to be gathered at the end of the month…

...But you really want to play a game of Clackersnap soon. Though it’ll be meager compared to the rich and varied buffets and estates you visited in your younger years, you cannot help but enjoy the atmosphere as preparations are made over the next few days, and Rinim are awash in good cheer.

It is not long after the order has been made and cheered on that you receive word that your...guest...has arrived. A bit early, however...still, you meet him, and he bows, despite the wary looks. “Greetings, noble Tasma.” Oh? He remembered your name. Impressive. “I am High Magi Levi, and I look forward to your hospitality over the next three months. Forgive my early arrival; I traveled on my own in the hopes that I might learn a bit of your culture before my tenure started properly.”

Well...better now when everyone is or soon will be in good cheer than otherwise.

“Welcome, welcome!” you offer as he steps in. He’s rather surprised at the greeting as he passes by laborers aplenty, all busy with the work preparations. He’s given plenty of concerned and suspicious stares, but your presence seems to prevent anyone from asking too many questions. For his part, he quietly observes the coming and going, until you arrive in the front of the mountain gates. “I thank you for allowing me this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” he says clearly, and you think he means it.

“It will be interesting for both of us. Beyond these gates are personal homes for the commonfolk,” you explain.

“Ah, you need not show that to me,” he insists. “I’d prepared my own lodgings nearby. I’ve crafted a temporary abode on the other side of the lake; I figured it’d be better to not worry you with someone as undoubtedly odd as I amongst you at all hours.”

Oh. Well, that was rather thoughtful of him. “That is much appreciated,” you admit. “It will make your presence all the more tolerable, not to speak poorly of my people…”

“It’s fine,” he dismisses. “Although I do have a question- from what I’ve heard, there’s a notable lack of common’s tongue around here. Are there few that speak it?”

“Aha.” Forgot about that, briefly. “In truth, I am the only one that can, at the moment. I have considered changing that in the future.”

“Oh, well, I would strongly suggest so, if you don’t mind. There are ways to instantaneously transfer language of knowledge, but it is deep magic, and generally only the Temple of the Shrouded Eye retains such knowledge regularly, aside from the crown. If you’re the only one to know the tongue, then have you met them, by chance?” He doesn’t seem to be accusing you of anything, judging from his tone...then again, you have no idea of how hairless operate…still, not much you can say to that.

“I have, but it was a fleeting moment, and my knowledge was brought on by necessity,” you explain.

He hmms in consideration. “I see. Well, in addition to teaching magics, I can likely perform some language transference spells, and perhaps traditional lessons as well; I noticed some younger of your kind about.”

For the next couple of days, he simply takes the time to get used to the presence of the Rinim, and when the celebration happens after the week’s end, he’s invited as well, as physical games of strength and smaller games of chance with lake- shined stones and simple boards are played amongst the youth and young at heart. This includes yourself, for a bit, which is quite heartening to the others. The hairless magi Levi is considered quite the oddity, and amidst the carousing, he becomes a bit of an attraction of his own, as he answers simple questions from curious youth and performs minor tricks of his kind of magic. He’s surprised to learn of the Dancer style of magic, and more surprised when some of the youth, led by Phini, showcase a Waterdancing routine in answer to his own water spells; he mentions that he’s impressed- he was unaware water could be controlled so fluidly. Phini is quick to respond that she was unaware that it could be condensed so strongly, and the two are quick to strike up a rapport, and spend much of the remainder of the festival discussing magic and general academica together.

Overall, the festival is quite the success, you think.

>Morale increased to Very High! Projects will complete faster.

During the rest of the month, Levi proves something of a fascination to the young Rinim, as he and Phini collaborate on magic studies. His style of magic, the power of names and vocalized spells, is different from your style, but they both believe that there's room for experimentation- Phini herself grows by leaps and bounds as the days pass, and the students prove to be interested studies under the 'weird almost hairless thing' as you hear them call him in private.

As for your side of the deal- given the bow requirements, you've got to hand it to your Woodcrafters, they grasped the size of the hairless's hands well, after using Levi for reference. The crafting was quick and easy, and they even managed to figure out a way to fletch arrows better, allowing for superior stability after he'd mentioned a few things about elven bows.

>Unlocked Recurve Bows!

>>
>>4276721

By the end of the month, a company's worth of bows have come out of the Woodcrafter's Shop, all of excellent Rinim quality, if you say so yourself. Levi himself is also impressed, and predicts your craftworks may well become a new trend if all your works are this quality.

They will be. But in the now, your Earthcrafters must away- they swear to bring back any secrets they may glean from the hairless's building style, having been given understand of the language by Levi- although you notice he seemed winded afterwards. Why Orville was not is a mystery...

The wagons arrive, carted by that big four-legged beast, and laden with grains, fruits, and vegetables, to your delight. Bringing your bows forth, you make the first trade, and your Earthcrafters leave with the bows.

>Current Food: 110

A few nobles, however...are less than happy. You're quickly approached by them- all three. The lot of them express concern that Levi could be subverting the youth- possibly corrupting them to work for the hairless, and not in Rinim interest. They worry that he is simply an agent of a subversive power, and wish that he be kept under much closer watch than he is, and forbidden from interacting with anyone barring lessons, which would also be closely monitored.

>Agree; it's probably unsafe to let him commiserate with Rinim for too long. Position a strong watch on him and strongly suggest he refrain from interacting with Rinim excepting lessons and special instances.

>Disagree; he's been perfectly fine so far, and if there were any hidden agenda, he'd have acted on it by now, surely.

Think my nibbas if you put him on lockdown and he IS a spy then he's going to manage to get out word that his operation is borked. And who knows what consequences that would have. Which is why it's essential that you esteemed individuals are to monitor him secretly and unintrusively. With your skills at being personable and keen eyes for quality you should be able to see anything truly suspect and not just unsettling as you have seen thus far.

Fuckin nobles. Let them feel like they're doing something valuable. Who cares if he is a spy if we can use him for more than he can use us?

I mean, yeah. We only need him to teach us about their magic and that's it, no reason to get chummy with him. But since he has a high standing in the Pinkie-land we can't offend him, so instead of assigning guards and breathing down his neck each day we could instruct our teachers to keep an eye out, learn where exactly his lodgings are and have 'regular' folks check if he's doing something shady or not from time to time: fishers 'checking new fishing spots', apothecary 'studying the local plants', hunters 'tracking their prey', etc. Maybe one of the nobles could teach kids from time to time about our culture and stuff and check if the children are getting bad ideas from him. What were these nobles doing all this time anyway?

Getting real sick of these nobles but they have a legit concern even if they're doing the wrong response. Maybe they should pass away in an "accident" and we can run a military junta of anonrinim with Tasma as the first leader.
>>
>>4277340
Well, nobles are supposed to have specific training, studying rhetoric, economics, etiquette, military training and other stuff needed for ruling their lands. They could serve as diplomats, bureaucrats, stewards and other officials, but... yeah, they haven't really contributed much to keep their titles. Unfortunately, we have no one to replace them with at the moment.
Running a merchant republic instead would be cool tho.

You eventually decide that it’s not worth pursuing. Nothing you’ve heard from the children suggests anything of the sort, and he’s here on a limited time- if he was after anything nefarious, he’d have acted on it by now, you figure. Phini seems to like him, as do the students. Still, as you start to talk, you can already see the nobles frowning, as though anticipating your response. Frankly, it’s somewhat irritating- they’d mostly sat around for the majority of the last year either supervising projects or helping physically, and grumbling about what they lost. You’d left them alone so far, but you hope this isn’t the start of anything.

Still, they ARE nobles… and you’re no new hand to dealing with them. A few subtle insinuations and they get the idea that if they keep an eye on him- unobtrusively, say if he comes around, then they can ‘say hi’ and observe what he does, then they can bring any sort of report to you, and you’ll deal with it.

Of course, by dealing with it you’ll likely be ignoring it, but it’s good to have them believe they’re doing something important.

And so the days continue; after but a single month, you notice a difference in their dancing styles; it’s flexible, but at the same time more...freestyle? You’re not sure you see a difference in overall effect, yet, but the power the kids are outputting is...honestly a bit worrisome. You hope they’d learned control…

You’d sat in on a couple of lessons here and there, but your days were largely about listening to minor grievances and issues, not learning Dancing. It’s a shame, but it is what it is. Besides that, however…

The next morning, you’re woken by excited yelling just outside, and before you know it, you’re quickly summoned- the two mothers to be are...well, no longer ‘to be’! All children were delivered safely, for a total of 9 children; four in one family, five in the other. Not a horrible birthing period, thank goodness, but the mothers will be out of action for a bit.

Considering your new relationship, and your presumption of the new neighbors’ military still, you may need to learn more about the nature of the army. This is by far your weakest portion of knowledge, and you’ll need to rely on your Warriors’ experience far more than your own. At least, in terms of actual combat. Not that you have much in the way of forces, unless you conscript someone…as much as you hated it happening to your father, though, you’d much rather avoid that.

That said, you DO know a few things about their wardrobe and accessories. The Rinim style of combat is largely speed and precision- using slings, arrows, short swords, and small axes to cut and bleed your foes. You’re not sure what these hairless do, but it’s clear they are more keen towards heavy defense. Meaning that all the speed in the world would be useless if you can’t damage them regardless, and you wouldn’t doubt they have natural strength as well. There’ll need to be some way to utilize your speed and inflict damage despite the armor, while keeping your defensive capabilities high. This’ll also probably help with the megapedes, come to think of it. Although that’s more defensive instead of figuring out how to crush them…

After you bring these thoughts to your Warriors, they agree and are quick to make suggestions in terms of design. Half-helmets, some crushing tools they call ‘crowners’ may work, other various bits and bobs...You’re not sure of it, but you’ll trust them for now.

For now, you’ll be testing designs with wooden prototypes- even the metalworkers you have aren’t entirely practiced in weapons, though they claim they can learn quickly enough. That means you’ll need to gather a large amount of wood…

On the whole, the entire project goes well enough- wood is gathered, enough to provide a bit of extra for a few asks for the clothweavers- trying to recall some of the old knowledge of their teachers and others that were lost; the methods for more efficient looms and wheels. There’s talk of perhaps constructing a mill as well as non-cavern storage- with the food coming in, it’s considered that the amount of food you’ll be getting along with what you’re making yourself means that you’ll have more than is necessary at any given time. It’ll take some time for them to puzzle out, you’re sure, but they at least have the wood to give it some experimentation.

As for the actual combat tools, it seems as though the warriors know just what they’re talking about. Before long, you see them training in wood practice armor, before requesting your metalcrafters with the real deal. While their standard armor is worthwhile (and valuable), they lack helmets- fortunately that’s soon to change. Shields as well are designed, and even a spare set of basic chest armor is crafted, just in case. This still leaves you with some iron; fortunately.

>Current Wood: 45
>Current Iron Ore: 20

As practice abounds, you get wind of the hairless arriving once more- they’re finally bringing those beasts; large four legged, long faced things they called ‘horses’, and smaller variants they called ‘mules’- apparently crossbred with horses and another beast. Strange, that. That’s not all, as they bring a number pf soft furred, smaller creatures only a snout or maybe a head shorter than yourself, called ‘sheep’.

All of this is given, and upon seeing it, Levi seems impressed. “My, that’s a nice handful of sheep,” he notes to the gathered parties as they’re unloaded. “You can cut their fur and use it for clothing, which is why I suspect they gave you so many. The horses are best used for farmwork, such as turning over soil and hauling wagons, and the mules can do similar; though I suspect your stature will allow you to ride them as well, if you want.”

This gets a rather large interest from the farmers, indeed, as you translate for those that haven’t gotten the translation magic yet. A couple of them are annoyed, but the majority of them see an opportunity to not only increase production, but perhaps delve into new areas of study. The clothweavers are similarly interested, as the creatures vaguely resemble fluffy beasts back home that were used for similar purposes. Smaller ears, though. Although, that bears wonder- where will you PUT them? Or even contain them?

One of the hairless traders offers to stick around for a bit to explain the basics of animal care, which you accept gratefully, but as for location for the stables…well, it needs to be nearby, at least. That's all you know.

You eventually decide on the forested area to your southwest- it’s got a river running through it, and so it’d be perfect for a proper area to raise the creatures. The trader agrees to assist in supervision for a good foraging ground for the beasts as well as a containment area as he dispenses his advice-on his own time, apparently, confident that his wife will make up things in his absence. Your farmers are aware of general animal handling, but these creatures are different.

Fortunately, the building of the fence for them isn’t that hard. It’s the ‘barn’ area that proves a bit more troublesome, but it ultimately is made as well. Thank goodness for the fact that they all seem rather docile. The hairless explains the general idea for using the ‘sheep’ for clothing material, though he admits he knows little of the process itself- your clothweavers are confident they can figure out the rest, however; it’s not THAT different from what they used to use, they claim.

The ‘horse’ creatures are both more and less complicated; alongside the ‘mules’, they aren’t as gentle, and take much prodding, and a single horse requires two Rimin to corral. A couple of farmers seem to be quite interested in animal care and volunteer to help keep the beasts, at least, so that’s something.

By the end of the month, the hairless claims that ‘they know enough to get by now’, and takes his leave, though he suggests he may be back for one reason or another, if not just to visit. He claims he ‘kinda likes the homey look of the place’.

At any rate, you now have beasts of burden to lighten your load, and even provide assistance with travel!

>Lost 2 farmers!
>Gained 2 Ranchrats!
>Can now trade with any given town/society.

With the month ending, and your village growing, you wonder what could be done to move things along further…

“My lady!” Hm? You turn to see one of the nobles; in quite an agitated state, no less. Wild eyed, almost mad in fury and exhaustion, and her grey fur practically poofed out. “I...They...the hairless…!”

“Hm? Calm yourself and speak slower, Lady Bempi, please!” She looked like she’d seen a ghost.

“They- they’ve been...meeting!” Meeting? Well- “In secret!”

She continues undaunted. “He’s swaying her to his side, I know it! I overheard them discussing her going to the hairless’ kingdom! No doubt to sell us out!”

“What else did you hear?” you ask calmly.

“Oh, like I could stand to hear further. But there were giggles and chortles and she was all too happy! You must do something!”

...Oh dear.

With the new year happening, you’d rather not have the megapedes- you’d forgotten the actual name, but you liked ‘megapedes’- have a chance to spawn more and cause that area of the mountain to be locked off forever. There’s a LOT you could do with that space, even besides harvest the mushrooms found there. You could mine more ore, and use it for tools and other things. With better weapons and gear, you wouldn’t feel quite as worried about potential assaults on your settlement, either. With at least two on guard duty, meaning only eight to choose from, you have to decide on how many to send. Obviously, the more means a better chance of success- but it also puts more of your valuable fighters at risk, paradoxically. You’ll have to choose wisely…

>How many Warriors to send? 1-8?

In preparation for the outing, you request your scholars and apothecary to prepare for the worst; making sure salves and reagents are ready, and to do their best to research possible ways to cure ailments or injuries if they can.

Similarly, taming the animals to be ridden is also of importance- the value of them cannot be understated in regards to scouting efforts and general travel. While they seemed somewhat docile, it’d be good to begin leaning them as soon as possible. The Ranchrats agree, and beyond some of the craftsrats, more than a few young ones are interested in learning to ride as well.

Hopefully there won’t be too many accidents…

>Roll 3d10, best of three.

As for Phini and Levi...you make the decision to approach her alone. Whatever’s going on, you have a better chance of getting it out of her than the hairless ‘Magi’- or both of them together where his presence might unduly influence her.

When you knock on her door the next evening, she seems surprised to see you. “My lady? Is there something you need?”

“I’ve heard some things. About you and the hairless one, Levi.” At that, she stiffens slightly, and you worry that perhaps the noble hadn’t been just fretting over nothing. “Apparently, you’ve been…planning something?”

“What? N-no? We just meet in the evening sometimes. To learn of each other’s...magic. That’s all!” she insists.

>Press her on the subject. You need details, and if they’re plotting something after all...
>Simply warn her to remember that he’s not here for much longer. Whatever’s happening needs to end.
>Note that she’s being watched carefully, and she’ll have someone keeping an eye on her and him, now.

You speak with authority as to level your gaze at her- there are many things you can overlook, but betrayal is not one of them. “Is that so?” you ask cooly. “If there are things other than magic you might be curious of, then do permit me to know of them as well. For the good and progress of Rinim-kind, that is.”

“It’s nothing like what you might be thinking!” she half-yells. “I’m not some kind of traitor! I haven’t told him anything about us that he’s not heard already! We just...it’s...” while she’s shaking at first, all at one, she stops, and sighs, as though all the fight’s fled her. “We...he is very kind. And interested in me. Not my work, I mean. Me. As a Rinim. I, in turn was- am interested in him, despite his odd hairlessness. There is...an attraction.”

You...are not entirely certain how to parse this. “Attraction?”

“Yes, yes, I know it’s disgusting!” she bites off, near dismissive. “And off all things it’s horrible for our long-term survival! But he fascinates me in ways I’ve never been aware of before, and he claims to be most curious about me in a similar manner. I’ve...expressed interest in seeing the humans’ city for myself, that’s all.”

“‘Humans’?” you point out. That word sounded only vaguely familiar…

“Y-yes. That is what they call themselves. Did you never notice?!” she asks with incredulity. In truth, you hadn’t- not out of callousness, but, well...you’d kinda just called them ‘hairless’ and stuck with it. Okay, maybe SOME callousness, but not in mean spirits! “At any rate, he is rather thoughtful, and while I understand the concern, I beg your understanding!” Indeed, she falls to her knees. “I admit this isn’t normal. Nor is it entirely safe! But has anything we’ve done? Anything we ARE doing? You just asked me earlier to perform studies on the local plantlife in case of injury- that could have side-effects, but it must be done, right?”

“You think THIS must be done?” You ask with a raised eyebrow.

“I…” she doesn’t seem to have an answer, but she looks up at you nonetheless. “Please. It harms no one; we’ve acknowledged that it might be fleeting, or even untenable. But could it not be overlooked until that time comes?”

>Response?

Oh dear this is an awkward situation.
The question remains whether or not our resident human is being honest in his affections or trying to manipulate a naive girl.
I am concerned for her well being of we let her go but I also don't want to be the kind of dictator that won't let someone follow their heart just because we think it odd.

Basically I think we should have a through conversation with the Magi and if we think he's honest I'm inclined to let her go with him so long as we work out some way for her to stay in touch with us.

You sigh. You’ve never been given for tyranny, and it doesn’t appeal to you here. But you CAN see ahead, and you’re not sure you like what may come of this… "You know we're just settling down again Phini- and after all that happened.”

She sighs, like a child realizing she’s in for a lecture. “I know.”

“Right. And at this crucial stage, we need every hand here- and that includes someone of your position. It’s no small task you have assigned to you." Indeed, teacher, researcher, organizer in some aspects- she held many roles in her paw. To abandon them now…

“It hasn’t come up so far, but-!” you quickly forestall her argument with a raised hand.

"I shall reserve my final judgement until I have a talk with our guest hairless. Rethink this again, please, for I fear this is an act of irresponsibility."

“...yes, my lady.” She says no more, and neither do you. As you step out of the den, you sigh to yourself. Hardly a year in- barely a few months with a new race to deal with and discover...and THIS. Dear, dear.

Well. Next stop, the hairless- human. Hairless human.

You can’t do it tonight, however. He’ll be over in the morning- and that’ll be when you ask about his...intentions towards your oddball scholar. Hopefully, they’re pure and you can work something out.

If you get a hint of subterfuge, on the other hand…

...well, you’d hate to owe Lady Bempi anything.

The morning comes with less fanfare than it deserves, really. He arrives with less fanfare, too- mind, when he looks you in the eye, with your own expression as serious as can be, he seems to get an idea of what you want, and follows you without question.

Although, even with this...you’re not sure how to approach it.
