ACTIVATING FRIENDLY WAVE PROGRAM
You wave to the creature in the friendliest way you can with your programming, and the creature immediately seems to understand that you mean it no harm! The creature jumps out from behind the scrap in pure joy and starts running over to you! It moves its head as if it's speaking, but without your audio sensors on you can't hear it! It doesn't phase the creature though, it hops around you happily and examines and pokes certain parts of your robotic body.

>Interesting, this thing appears to like robots. If it has a fondness for them, then I calculate that it's likely it has the means for repairing and recharging them-

However, mid-thought, the creature takes out a screwdriver and crowbar and starts trying to open up the hatch on the back of your head, which contains all of your AI functions and an off-switch, along with other vital functions!

ACTIVATING AUDIO SENSORS AND VOCALIZING PROGRAM...

"Please stop. I do not want you to tamper with my head panel."

The creature jumps back, and their smile fades. "Oh! You can speak! I-I just thought... U-Um... T-That your audio sensors or your speaking program may have been busted, and was going to fix them for you! S-Sorry!" The creature now stares, as if it's wondering what to say next. "Well, you're in damn-good condition, who owns you? Your owner won't be happy if you end up getting captured and scrapped by the gang." The creature moves uncomfortably, as if it's sizing us up, and its bug-ish eyes occasionally dart around, as if checking if anyone is nearby.

"Why do you have a weapon holstered?"

The creature stares at you blankly, its eyes seem to dart to where its weapon is, but with its arm still in the air the creature realizes that it won't have enough time to pull it out before we could incapacitate them. "It's uh... Just something I've made myself. I carry it to protect myself from monsters, the gang, or rogue machines. It has three settings, stun, ion, and laser. I was uh, going to ion you and disable your systems if you seemed like a threat. S-Sorry." The creature seems genuinely sad, but it could just be trying to get sympathy.

"You show yourself as untrustworthy. Lift your loincloth now, so I can make sure you aren't hiding anything else."

"W-Wha-"

"Do it, creature."

The creature sighs, and then lifts up its loincloth, revealing that it has no other hidden weapons.

"Alright, I can deem you as non-threatening. I'll follow you."
ACTIVATING SMUG JOKE PROGRAM
"However, I now deem you as a homosexual for so willingly exposing yourself."

"Y-You're the one that asked, tin can!" The moth's neck fluff seems to puff out, indicating that he's flustered. "My base is past some hills over there. It should be a pretty safe trek, but you never know, so stay close." As he says this, he points to some hills in the distance, which don't seem to have anything of note other than the tons of scrap metal littered about everywhere. "Alright, lets go."

"Understood." The moth carefully slides down the hill, careful to not let the loose debris make him lose his balance. You're a little less graceful. Being heavier, more debris gets displaced with each step, making it hard, but not impossible to keep your balance. However, once you get to level ground, traversing is much easier, and you can easily keep up with the moth.

"Keep an eye out, let me know if you see anything, okay?" The moth says as you enter the hilly area. About halfway through your trek, your audio sensors pick something up. Something is moving behind us, but it's too far away to see, and seems to hide behind the hills. Turning around, you notice something, your weight means you're leaving noticeable footprints in the ground.
>I wish I noticed those footprints sooner, now that means someone or something could be following us. I can't afford any other distractions, we're only about 2 minutes away from our destination. What do I do?

LOWERING VOCALS VOLUME...
"Moth, what are you doing?"

"Shuuush! Just shut up, please!" Whispers the moth frantically as he digs you deeper into the pile, covering you up with his body. Suddenly, he expands his wings, and somehow they rotate to cover both of you! Their color also beings to change, matching he colors of the dirt and even making metallic-looking grey spots to simulate bits of scrap metal. "Don't speak, I can hear them now as well." Whispers the moth. His body is incredibly light compared to yours, as your touch sensors barely feel him weigh down on you. You calculate that smacking him before probably would've been enough to shatter bone in any spot you hit, if he even has bones.

The movement gets louder, and your sensors pick up the sounds of footsteps along with what sounds like human language. "Oi, the tracks end here, the hell did they go?"

"They can't have gone far, search the area idiot!"

"Olroight olroight!" You hear the sounds of sifting debris, and you see the moth start shaking and getting nervous. You hear one of the humans walks near your hiding spot, and start searching through debris right next to you and the moth! "Oi mate, I'm thinkian' that I found sumthink roight her-"

"Oh shut it! I'm not going to waste more time exploring these wastes with you just so you can find one of your retarded trinkets!"

"WOT DID YOU BLOODY SAY TO ME!? MY "TRINKETS" ARE THE ONLEH THANGS THAT KEEP YOU DUMBARSES SANE!" The human's footsteps rush toward the sound of the other human's voice, and you hear the sounds of a struggle!

The moth whispers "Y-You got a plan r-robot?", still shivering in fear.

"Wait for a minute, and if they're incapacitated, we run to your base."

The moth is shivering, but you think you can make out him nodding. "G-Got it."

"YOU SHIT, GET YOUR HANDS OFF OF ME!" You hear the sound of flesh smacking flesh.

"YOU BLOODY FOOKIN WANKAH, I'LL SMASH YER 'EAD IN, YOU'LL-" The human's rantings are cut off by the sound of metal smashing into bone, followed by a bloodcurdling scream of pain.

"EAT SHIT!" You continue to hear metal smashing against bone, and the screams turn into painful groans. "I'LL TURN YOUR HEAD INTO PASTE! THIS IS FOR TAKING MY RATIONS LAST NIGHT!"

"N-Now's our chance!" The moth jumps out the hole, and pulls us out, and starts sprinting away! You only just get a glance at the two humans fighting, one has the other on the ground, and is bashing its battered body with a piece of metal. Thankfully, he's too consumed by his rage to notice you and the moth running away from the scene. You dash to keep up with the moth, and put extra power into your movement systems.

"Thank you." As you walk over to the charger, your systems begin to fail, but the moment you step foot on it you feel power flowing through you! Your systems all start back up again, and you can feel your back-up battery being charged! The moth heads over to his bed and throws off his soiled loincloth.

"I-Is it okay if I just take a nap for a while before changing your m-main battery? Your backup one should be getting charged, so you s-should be fine for a few hours. I-I need a little nap..." He says, as he covers himself with a tattered blanket, and gets himself comfortable on his bed.

ACTIVATING ADVANCED SCANNING MODULE...
You scan the hatch into the burrow, the workbench, and the burrow's walls, floor, and ceiling. The "hatch" is just a simple piece of slightly heavy scrap that covers the hole inside, it could be easily moved by most creatures. The workbench as a pile of screws, nuts, and other sorted mechanical bits in a pile, along with a tool rack on it. Under it, there are a couple blueprints, and a bucket of scrap metal. The burrow itself appears to be dug in some soil that is stable enough to support it, and there are a couple metal support beams built in the walls.

SCANNING AND CROSS-REFERENCING MAP...
The map has a few specific landmarks drawn, the village at the top, the river to the right, the trash pile on the bottom, the hills and burrow on the left, and the hill we were found on in the middle. On the right, there's what appears to be the fortress, but there are some knifes that have been thrown at it, and there are burn marks right on top of its drawing.
>The burn marks are likely from the moth's handheld lasergun...

SCANNING CHEST...
The chest appears to be self-made out of random scrap metal, and could be broken open with force easily. The lock is a simple key-lock, that could broken open with some force.
>He probably keeps the key somewhere around here. He did tell me not to break anything, but he didn't say anything about unlocking his chest...

SCANNING BURN MARKS...
SCAN COMPLETE. BURNS LIKELY CAUSED BY A LOW-POWER HEAT LASER, SHOT FROM SOME SORT OF LASER GUN.
>So, it was almost certainly that laser gun the moth has. Considering those knifes stuck in the map right next to it, it's likely he's angry at that location for some reason, and wasn't trying to shoot down some fly. That location on the map lines up with the fortress I saw earlier...

SCAN COMPLETE. POSSIBLE KEY FOUND.
Your scan finds a key on the moth's clothes rack, right next to where he's sleeping.

You quietly and slowly move towards the sleeping moth, who is still snoring away. You make a quick grab for the key, and snatch it while barely making a sound. You then head back to the chest, and the key fits the lock! The chests unlock with a small click, and you lift up the chest's top to reveal the contents inside.
>Lets see here, looks like some robot parts, some memory chips and a circuit board of some kind, a pile of wires, a robot battery, a grey folder with the word "CONFIDENTIAL" on the cover, some sort of electronic tablet with a screen and buttons, and a worn-looking book. You grab the book and the file, and quickly skim through all of the pages to store them in your memory. Once you've got all of the pages in memory, you carefully put them back where they were and close the chest, and re-lock it. You once again walk over to near the moth, and put the key back on his tool-belt. You then go back to your charging station and look through your memories, and start with the file.

>003
>TEST SUBJECT REPORT
>We started our experiment, and created some humanoid moth-like creatures via cloning and gene editing, however only this test subject survived the growing process. The rest failed to grow past an embryo, or grew fatal deformities and mutations. Once we confirmed that the subject was alive and well, we started phase two of the experiment, brain surgery that would combine the subject's brain with a computer that would increase their cognitive abilities, and allow them to read data by connecting memory cards or chips into a input on their neck. The surgery went well, and now we just wait until the subject wakes up from their medical-induced coma.
>Day 2, the subject woke up, and the surgery was mostly a success. While their brain appears to operate just as well as before, he now requires a memory chip to maintain this function, or else his brain functions slow down. We have yet to figure out why this happens, it is possible it was caused during an error during surgery.

The rest of the file just contains more reports on experiments done on the moth, including cognitive and physical tests. The moth did well on almost all cognitive tests, but almost always failed horribly on the physical ones. The reports go over about 3 years of experimentation, but end suddenly.
>So, he was lab-grown and a test subject. But why does the report just end? And how did he end up here?

You then start reading the book in your memory banks, and start reading the first page.
>One of the scientist men gave me this to write in! He said this was for an experiment to test my writing skills, but he said it was also okay to just use it as a journal too, so that's what I'll do!
>It's a diary that he used during his time at the lab. While it's perfectly safe to read it in my mind, he probably wouldn't want me to dig into his past and thoughts like this.

You read all of the diary, specifically looking for anything showing that he's untrustworthy. Most of the diary is just him explaining the experiments done on him, and what his life is like, but later on in the diary he writes about hiding the diary and lying to the scientists.
>I'm tired of these jerks reading my diary all the time! I'm allowed no privacy here! Thankfully, there's one spot in my room that the cameras don't cover, so I can write here in peace. I told them I lost my diary, and got a new one that I'll use to write boring stuff for them to read, so they can no longer read my real thoughts.

Later, he starts writing about how the scientists are sometimes less than professional. These pages appear to be smeared, as if some water droplets landed on them.
>The scientists have been getting increasingly angry lately. I've heard that all of their other attempts at making test subjects hasn't worked, and apparently my results aren't as good as they wanted for the tests, even the mental ones.
A later page...
>I HATE THESE "SCIENTISTS!" SO WHAT IF I'M NOT AS SMART AS A GODDAMN COMPUTER! BEATING ME ISN'T GOING TO HELP!

The next pages continue on with writings like this, but it isn't until later that he writes about taking action.
>Those idiots, they keep giving me better chips because I keep feigning stupidity. They actually gave me one with a wireless connection! I was able to hack into the station's security and engine programs. There's some escape pods, I'll overload the engine, then open a path to one of the escape pods, and lock the rest. That'll put an end to their experiments. Hopefully none of them escape so they can't do one of their "experiments" ever again!
The next page...
>YESSSSS! I MADE IT TO THE POD, AND THE STATION'S GONE! Now I just gotta hope that I land somewhere habitable...
The diary entries end here.

>Well, clearly this moth has no problems about killing people he dislikes. Was he truly justified in going that far? It also looks like he has no problem with lying and tricking people to get his plans done. Can I trust him to fix me? What if I'm just going to end up part of some plan of his? And that chip he connects to his brain, what if he used that to try and hack into my systems? But he also protected me from those humans that were tracking us... I don't know what to think of him...

In the time it took you to decipher the diary, you've become fully charged, and you can hear the moth starting to stir from his sleep, he'll probably wake up in a few minutes.

Moth probably wants revenge on humans and wants to hack and program us for that purpose. We need to explore other alternatives before fully placing our trust in him.

If we don't find a replacement main battery in the pile of scrap then we can go to the village and see if we can find help, if neither options work then we can return to the moth base and make up an excuse of why we left

You decide to wait for the moth to wake up. The moth stops snoring, and sits up on his bed, and stares at you. "Huh, you're still here! I thought for sure you would leave while I slept. Had fun poking around my room?" He yawns, and gets himself a new loincloth while climbing out of the bed. He then does a big stretch, stretching out his arms and wings. "Ah, nothing like a nice little nap! Glad we made it back here safely! Now I can get to fixing you, unless you wanna do something else first, robot."

"Please fix my main battery now."

"Alright, let me get the battery out then." The moth lets out another small yawn and lazily moves over to the chest, unlocking it and taking out the big battery. "Unlock your back hatch, please. Don't worry, there's no important systems in your back that I can mess with other than your main power source."

"Understood." You unlock your back hatch, and he takes out a screwdriver and a crowbar to open it up.

The moth walks behind you and kneels down. He uses the crowbar to open your back hatch. "Alright, lets see how ba- OH SHIT! That's uh... really, really not good!"

"What is the problem?"

"Battery acid, a lot of it! It's going to take me a while to clean it all out, your wires will probably need replacing too, damn. This thing must've been leaking for a while. Doesn't look like any other major systems are damaged though, luckily." says the moth, as he grabs a rag from his workbench and starts trying to clean up the battery acid.

"If you do not mind, I have some questions."

"Ask away, I'll be working on this for a while."

"Can you tell me about this planet? I lack any information on it."

"Oh, well, as you could probably tell, this place is a junkyard. I wasn't born here, but I was raised by some locals after I got here. People just refer to this planet as "The junkyard" or "The dumping ground", as a lot of companies and governments would just dump a lot of their trash and scrap onto it. The reason they did this is because someone messed up when mapping this area, and forgot to add this planet to starmaps. As this isn't a registered planet, it created a loophole in inter-galactic law that let people dump whatever the hell they want here, laws be damned. Few really have the means of leaving this planet, and there really hasn't been an effort to get the planet officially recognized. So I hope you didn't have any dreams of getting off this dump!" The moth sighs, and grabs some wires out of his chest to replace the burnt ones inside of you.

"Anyway, most of the people that live here got stranded by crash landings or they got dumped here by someone. There apparently were some natives, but they lived on the other side of the planet, and no one really knows anything about their history, or if there's even any of them left. As for this area, there's a village up northeast of here, which is probably the biggest settlement in the area. There's a lot of different races there, but the place is run by some cyborg guy. As for the fort which you've seen..." The moth pauses, as his hand slips and he accidentally cuts a wire with his screwdriver. "Dammit! Anyway... That fort is run by the local gang. Those were the guys who were tracking us. They're pure scum. They've almost got me a few times, but thanks to my camouflaging wings, I can usually hide from them safely."

The moth takes out your old battery, and inserts a new one. You can feel a new surge of power flowing through you! You turn off your backup power system, and now your systems all take power from your main battery. "Your old battery was actually better than this replacement one, a shame it's completely busted. Mine will probably only last you about a day, but that should be fine for now." He starts fixing the wiring in your body.

"Is there any way to get clean?"

"I usually just boil some water that I keep in containers under my bed and then give myself a sponge-bath. The river here is pure filth. I heard the village has a bathhouse, but I've never been there. If you want, I can clean you after I'm done."

"Why did you need to take a nap instead of just doing normal biological sleep?"

"Well, I'm nocturnal, so if I decided to sleep you would've been waiting much longer! Plus, I needed a rest after our near-death experience. I'm not exactly the most fit creature, it doesn't take much to completely tire me out." He finishes fixing the last wire, and closes up your hatch. "Alright! You're all fixed up now! Want me to clean you up?"

"Please do."

"Alright, let me go get my sponge and some water." The moth grabs some flasks of water under his bed, and uses them to wet a sponge. He then puts the flasks back under his bed, and walks back over to us. "Time to get you all nice and sparkly again." He starts wiping off the mud and dirt with the sponge, and our body starts to have a metallic shine again.

"Why are you helping me?"

"Well, uh..." The moth stops, and thinks for a second. "Well, I guess it's just because I like robots. You're easier to work with than say, humans. Plus it gets lonely out here, it's nice to have somethin- I mean, someone to talk to every once and a while, y'know?"

"It is odd for someone to be so willing to help a robot, especially one who is under no obligations to help you or follow your orders. I find it hard to believe that you are only helping me just because you like robots. We are not beings, we are tools to be used by people like you."

"That's awfully pessimistic, isn't it?" He sighs again. "... But you're right. There's some stuff I'd like you to help me with, if you'd be willing to hear me out. But if you don't, you can leave. I have no right to keep you here if you have some directives to fulfill. I'll warn you though, people around here would pay good money for a robot in your condition, or just even your parts. Don't expect to be safe if you leave, no one else around here will consider you anything more than a way to get some profit."

"I have no directives to fulfill, actually. They have been blocked off by a black box, and I cannot access them."

"Huh, really? That's weird, your directives should be the number one thing you should always be able to access as a robot. What about your laws?"

"Same thing. I am unable to access them. As of now I act of complete free will, and my internal AIs do my decision making."

"Wait, NO LAWS?" The moth seems taken aback, and looks scared. "Y-You're joking! You g-gotta have some, right? Like y'know, the big three? The "do not harm" ones?"

"I do not have any laws. I could do harm if I wished."

The moth looks completely and utterly shocked, but he regains his composure and clears his throat. "Ahem, well... I guess I'm lucky that you're so level-headed. Robots and AIs without any laws or directives tend to go a little insane. You probably shouldn't tell anyone else that you're acting of true free will, people don't usually like hearing robots say that."

"Noted. Now, I shall listen to your wishes."

"Oh, thank you!" The moth bows, and starts to explain with a fiery look in his eyes. "I need you to help me destroy that fortress that the gang live in. I've already made progress on this plan before I ran into you, I have a friend in the village who has been working on making a bomb that'll be strong enough to level the whole fortress. It'll be small enough to carry, but it'll be heavy, so you'll need to carry it. However, first I need you to go to the village on your own and get the bomb for me. I can't risk going into the village myself."

"Why?"

"I uh... have very expensive fur, yeah! I've had people try to assault and skin me at the village before. You'll have to go in a disguise as well, robots don't exactly have rights in that village. I have a large coat you can wear that should be enough to disguise you. I wear it when I go, to cover up my fac- I mean, fur! You'll have to go to the village bar, and ask the bartender about "The secret brew", and tell him that number three sent you. He should give you the bomb, and then you can bring it here so we can plan our raid."

>"Alright, I'll help you."

"I need more information. Why do you hate this gang so much?"

The moth takes a deep breath. "They... They're a gang of humans, and like most humans they're nothing but pure scum. When I first landed here, I was taken in by a village. The villagers were kind, and treated me like family. They raised me, and taught me how to survive on this planet. It was the first time I've ever had true friends." Tears begin to well up in the moth's eyes. "But one day, I went off to leave to go get some materials for something I was building. I ran into the gang, and I saw that they were in larger numbers than usual. In a panic, I ran as fast as I could away from them, but realized too late that it was a raiding party. I ran back to the village, to find it up in flames." He wipes away some tears. "If I had just gone back and warned the village... Maybe some people could've escaped..." However, the moth's tearful look suddenly changes to a look of pure anger. "So that's why I have to destroy that gang! To make up for my mistake, and to make sure they can't do something like that ever again! THOSE BASTARDS WILL PAY!" After that outburst, the moth takes another deep breath to regain his composure. "My bartender friend was one of the few that escaped, that's why he's helping me. Is that enough information for you?"

>"Yes, I'll help you."
>"I'm sorry, but this still seems insane. I'm leaving."

"You helped me, so it's only right that I help you."

Tears well up in the moth's eyes again. "R-Really? Thank you so much!" He suddenly jumps towards you and gives you a hug! You don't know how to respond to this. "It's nice to finally have someone else that I can trust around here." He holds you tighter, and just hugs your metallic body in silence.

"... Moth, I cannot do my mission if you keep holding onto me like this."

"S-Sorry, just give me a moment, alright?" He continues hugging you. "I'll be honest, when I first found you I was planning on reprogramming you so you would help me, and only follow my orders. If you had went into hibernation mode when you got here, I was going to crack open your head and insert my own directives. But now that I know you have true free will, I don't want to take that from you. You can feel his tears landing on your upper body.

ACTIVATING PSYCHOLOGICAL REINFORCEMENT PROTOCOL...

You return the hug, and put one arm around his back, and another on the back of his head. The moth shivers, as if he didn't expect it, but doesn't resist. "I'm lucky that you're the first creature that ran across me, moth. Had it been anyone else, I probably would've become scrap or forced to become their robotic slave. With all of my free will, I can say I am deeply thankful for your actions. While I am unable to feel emotions, know that I trust you." The tears start coming out faster.

"Y-You still have more emotion and soul than *sniff* than any disgusting h-human!" The moth completely loses his composure, and starts sobbing onto your chest. Through the sobs, your sensors just barely pick up the words "T-Thank you... B-best friend..." He continues sobbing, and you worry that his tears might waterlog your systems. But after a few minutes, his tears dry up, and he breaks away from the hug.

>Names can wait until I learn more about him, and myself.
"I am ready, moth. Please hand me your coat."

"Alright..." The moth looks a little hesitant, but then nods and digs under his bed for his coat. "Here it is! We're about the same size, so it should fit you just fine. You'll have to rotate those antenna back though." The moth takes out a large hooded robe, and hands it over to you. You make your antenna rotate back, so they won't interfere with putting on the hood. The moth helps put the coat around you. "It uh, doesn't have arm holes, so you're going to have to be careful to make sure it doesn't get blown open and reveal that you're a robot. Don't let ANYONE, and I mean ANYONE, there know you're a robot. Oh, you should also take this!" The moth heads over to the loincloth he was wearing yesterday, and takes out the handheld lasergun he made. He also grabs a long toolbelt. "Here, put this around your robe, you should be able to attach the bomb to this when you get it, and you can carry this gun on it, just in case! The red button is a heat laser, yellow is stun, and blue is a ion blast that can disable machines. It recharges automatically, but don't expect to get anything more than two shots out of the thing before it needs a few minutes to charge."

"Thank you, moth. Now, I shall be on my way. Goodbye, and I will see you again soon." You turn around, and begin climbing up the ladder to leave the burrow.

"... W-Wait!" The moth runs over and grabs onto one of your legs.

"Is there something wrong?"

"P-Please... Please don't get hurt, okay?"

"I will do my mission flawlessly. I have not been programmed for failure."

"Thank you." The moth lets go, and you move the scrap blocking the entrance, and then re-cover it once you're out. It's daytime, with a noticeable haze and cloudy skies.

>Can't risk getting tracked, lets take it slow, and cover my tracks.
You carefully walk through the wasteland, making sure to not leave noticeable footprints, and while also making sure no other creatures spot us. Your sensors pick up some small wildlife every once and a while, but nothing alarming. After a 30 minute trek, the village is in view, and its walls tower over you. On the outskirts, there's farmplots with farmers working at them, and you can see two tall guards, and just barely make out some of the people on the main street of the village.

>Doesn't seem like the guards are stopping anyone from going in and out. I could probably just walk in, but maybe I should try to find a different way in first.

>No time to waste, even if I have a full main battery, there's always a chance something bad could happen to the moth if I take too long on this mission.
You head down the scrap metal road, and get close to the two guards. They're human, and have finely made metal chest plates. A quick scan shows that they carry a laser rifle on their back, and a knife on their belt. As you get closer to them, you realize something that you never realized while you were with the moth. You're short. Child-sized. These adult humans tower over you. While you could still probably overpower them, their weight will make it a more even fight. However, the guards seem to take little notice of you as you're about to walk through the gate.

"Hey kid, wait a minute!" shouts one of the guards, just as you're almost in the village walls. He moves from his post and stands in front of you. "Haven't seen you around here before. What's your busines-"

"Frank, just let the damn kid go through. He's probably looking for his parents or something." Says the other guard, who's leaning back on the wall and not even looking at us.

"Come on, he could be part of the gang!"

"Oh no, a little kid! How will our poor little village ever recover if some child decides to go crazy!"

"Very funny Conrad, but you know we have orders to search any unfamiliar faces!"

"What, you're going to search the kid? What a waste of time, just ask him why he's here and be done with it."

"But he could be hiding something under that robe!"

"So you're gonna strip search him? Didn't know you were into kids." The human named Conrad chuckles.

"I'm not- Ugh, fine! Kid, why the hell are you here?"

"Oi, he's a kid, be a little nicer."

"Alright. Can you please tell me why the hell you are here, child?"

"That's better."

"I'm just looking for my parents. They're not from here though, so I guess I'm just stopping by. I don't have anything to give if you have some kind of toll, but I'm willing to work."

Frank stares at you for a few seconds, but then Conrad speaks up. "Oh, he's willing to work! Guess you don't need to use searching as an excuse to get him to show you want you want to see, Fra-"

"Shut up! Get moving kid before this idiot makes anymore stupid jokes." Frank walks back to his post, leaving you free to walk inside the city walls. The main street seems somewhat busy, with different species heading in and out of what looks like a shopping district to the right. You find a post that shows a crude, but serviceable map, and you visualize an over-head view of the village.

>Have to keep moving, I have a mission to fulfill.
You walk through the main street, and soon get to the bar. There's a sign on it that says "CLOSED", as it is early morning, but the door is unlocked so you let yourself in. You see a massive stag-beetle like humanoid tending the bar. It's likely that that is the bartender the moth was talking about. However, what grabs your attention is the poster on the wall, it's a wanted poster with a picture of the moth on it!

>If this beetle is truly the moth's friend, why does he leave up a wanted poster for him? And why does the moth have a warrant out for his arrest? Maybe I should ask some questions before I say the codewords.

"Hey, kid. Bar's closed until the evening, couldn't even serve you if you were of age." says the bug, as he uses his multiple arms to clean some glasses and organize some bottles of alcohol.

>No, I can't doubt the moth. Surely there's an explanation for the wanted poster.
"I'm here for the secret brew, number three sent me."

The moment you say this, the bug drops the glass he was cleaning, but skillfully grabs it with one of his lower arms. "How do you...? Well, no matter. Come into my backroom, the brew's back here." You lower the bar counter door, and then follow him into the backroom of the bar. It's a sparse room, with only a dresser, table, a few stools. However, there's a trapdoor on the floor. "No need to wear the hood in here lad, any friend of number three is a friend of mine. I'll have to go grab the brew from the cellar, you can sit and wait here."

>Moth told me to not show anyone that I'm a robot, which means no exceptions. I must keep the hood on.
You take a seat, but don't put your hood down. The bug opens the trapdoor and climbs down into the cellar, and a few minutes later he climbs back up with a package in hand.

"It's quite disrespectful to wear a hood indoors, you know." He sighs. "Are you sure you can handle this brew?"

"Positive. However, I have a question. How do you know number three?"

"That is one I should be asking you, lad. Three didn't seem big on making new friends after we escaped. I take it you have a hatred for the gang as well?"

"They did attempt to track me and Three down, but we escaped due to their own incompetence."

"Sounds like the gang alright." The bug still has his hands on the package. "... Well, I hope I don't offend you in saying that I find it hard to trust you. Remove that hood, I'm not giving something so dangerous to some stranger who won't even show their full face."

"I can assure you, I am friends with-"

"Words mean nothing. Now is the time for action. I need proof that you are friends with him, or at least for you to show who's hiding under that hood."

"Look at this toolbelt. This is from Three. It also hold the lasergun he made, he gave it to me for self-defense in case something went wrong on this mission."

The beetle puts his arms behind his back, hiding the package from your view. "You could've gotten that from killing him, and looting his body. If anything, that makes me more suspicious of you."

"If I killed him, then how would I know about the codewords?"

"Torture, I suppose is a possibility. Your evidence does nothing to prove your innocence, rather it just casts more doubt on your case." The beetle's tone of voice is getting louder, and he is clearly getting more cross with you. "As I've said, he is a very good friend of mine. And if you really have murdered him..."

"Your accusations are nothing more than conjecture. Three is alive and well, and has placed his trust in me."

"Then let me trust you, by revealing who you truly are!"

>He's getting more aggravated. I could continue down the debate route, or I could prepare to fight. Moth won't be happy if I hurt his friend though.

"... Hmph. You are correct. While I still do not trust you, I have agreed to your game, and you shall get your reward." The beetle reluctantly puts the package on the table. "... However, I'll be honest, if you are friends with Three, I don't see how two kids are going to successfully blow up the gang's heavily guarded fortress. I always told him that his idea was folly, and he should come up with a safer way to get revenge on them. But he wouldn't settle for anything less than pure destruction of the entire gang." You decide to visit the town hall, you see some citizens of the village walk in and out of the large building, once you walk inside you realize it looks much more like a throne room than a town hall. Right across from the front doors is the village mayor, sitting on a wooden throne. He appears to be human, but half of his head is robotic. He's listening to the wishes of one of the villagers when you walk in, but he looks like he's barely listening, and his focus shifts to look at you.

You slowly walk over to the mayor's throne, and he sits up. "Guards, get this civilian out of here, I wish to speak with the child."

"W-Wait! But what are we going to do abou-"

"You can tell me your problems later, for now I have an important meeting. Guards!" Two guards that were standing by his throne escort the civilian out of the hall. "Close the door as well, and guard outside. I wish for this conversation to have some privacy."

"Of course, mayor." Says a female guard. The two guards close the door behind you, leaving only you and the mayor in the room.

The mayor looks over you carefully. "You are incredibly stupid for coming here, robot. But thankfully I don't carry same hatred for your kind as most of my subjects do. Tell me, why are you here?"

You adjust your toolbelt so you have easy access to your gun. "I was simply on an errand to pick up a package for a friend. I shall be leaving town shortly."

"An odd task for a robot. If you don't mind, I would like your help in some tasks. Right now my village is having troubles dealing with the gang and chasing after a wanted criminal. If you were to help with either of these, we have parts that could upgrade some of your systems and modules."

"Why do you need my help with them specifically?"

"We do not have the manpower at the moment to send any trained soldiers out to do these tasks on their own. The village needs all of the defenses it can get, or we would be risking an attack by the gang. Plus, being a robot means you are stronger than most of my soldiers. Now, will you hear my requests?"

"Why do the people here hate robots?"

The mayor leans back in his seat. "A bit of a long story, but I'll shorten it down. Years ago some corporation dropped off a bunch of malfunctioning robots, and even though they were supposed to be mostly scrapped or deactivated, some of them somehow turned themselves on and started going haywire. Most ended up just running out of power, but one somehow became the leader of the gang. He apparently is so advanced that he can even feel emotions, but those are just rumors. No one really knows much about him, not even the gang members we capture have any idea what his programming is like, or why he's even running that gang."

"Interesting. I would like to hear more about this wanted criminal."

"Ah yes, the dangerous moth."

>The moth? So that wanted poster was real then.

"About a year ago, a nearby village exploded, and flames burnt down what was left. Only a few survived, and some of the survivors said they saw the moth plant the bomb in the middle of the village. He was a known gang member, but now he's only been sighted on his own, so we don't know if he's still affiliated with them. Either way, the only witnesses that survived say he was the one to burn down the village, so we've been searching for him ever since. Have you seen him in your travels?"

>But... this doesn't compute! The moth never told me he was part of the gang, and he said that he was raised at that village! Is this some kind of misunderstanding, or was he lying to me all along?

"No, but I am interested in helping you find him. What kind of upgrades would I receive?"

The mayor scratches his chin. "Well, the only upgrades we have at the moment are these; a jet-pack upgrade, a hidden laser gun and high-frequency blade for your arms, and some antenna upgrades that would increase the strength of your sensors, and make it easier to hack into things. All of these were intended for me, but alas, being mostly flesh any surgery to add them would likely result in error, as we have little technology here other than what we can scavenge."

"A very tempting offer. I will have to consider it."

"Well, is there anything else you would like to know, robot? If you are busy with your errand, you can come back later. Just don't get captured and reprogrammed by the gang if you leave. Or broken by angry village folk."

"Just out of curiosity, why don't you hate us robots like the others do?"

The mayor laughs. "Oh come on, isn't it obvious? If it wasn't for half of a robot brain I wouldn't be sitting here. Back before I got stranded here, I was in a bad accident that blew off half of my head, but somehow doctors were able to revive me by making me a cyborg. Because of this, I feel more in tune with robots and AIs than I do normal humans most of the time. I've faced some prejudice here for being part robot, but I get elected mayor every year anyway for being the most rational person in this village. Unfortunately I haven't been able to convince the people that robots shouldn't be so hated, so the laws here still say that all robots are to be destroyed on sight. A pity, but pushing for robot acceptance will probably get me voted out of office in outrage. Lots of villagers here have lost family members and friends to rogue robots that used to roam here, and to the gang that is run by a robot. Hopefully that is enough of a answer to satiate your curiosity."

"Thank you, that is satisfactory. I must get going now, but I also want to thank you for not divulging my secret."

"Don't worry about it. I'll also tell my guards not to bother you if they see you. Just be aware that if they do realize you're a robot, they will attempt to scrap you. My name is Cy, by the way. GUARDS! YOU MAY RE-ENTER!" The guards open the door from the outside, and the mayor waves to you. "Stay safe!" You exit back onto main street.

>Time to complete my mission, lets return to the base.
You exit through the village front gates, and the two guards that stopped you before pay you no mind as you leave. You head back through the wasteland to the moth's base, making sure to leave no tracks that could let you be followed. Thankfully you have no run-ins with the gang or any wildlife. After the 30 minute journey, you find the entrance to the burrow, and climb down, and the moth runs right up to you and gives you another big hug!

"You're back and you're safe! And you got the package! I knew you could do it! Come on, lets open it up and start the next phase of our plan!"

>Not before I ask some questions...

>He'll probably just dodge the question or get offended if I ask him bluntly. Lets ease in to make him more comfortable.
"Your friend gave me a rather hard time. Can you tell me more about them?"

"Oh, you mean Zabot? Yeah, I probably should've warned you about him! He may look huge and scary, but that's because he IS huge and scary! But he's a good person. Back at the village he was one of the main people that raised me, and whenever I was down he was always there to comfort me, even if he terrified me at first. Seeing him rip some monsters and robots in half with his pure strength didn't exactly help either, but eventually I warmed up to him and we became like family! I've even accidentally called him dad sometimes. He probably made sure you were really working for me, right?"

>He can rip robots in half? That would've been useful information to know BEFORE going to see him.

"Affirmative. I was able to argue my way into getting the package, however."

"Hah, that isn't easy to do! I don't think I've ever won an argument against him! I wish I could've gone myself, but y'know, expensive fur and all!"

>More like an expensive bounty. Should I ask him now?

>"Moth, you're my friend, but I would like to know why there's wanted posters of you in the village."

"Moth, you're my friend, but I think I know the real reason you don't want to go to the village."

"Huh? What are you talking about?" The smile fades from the moth's face.

"There's wanted posters of you up at the village. Can you please tell me why?"

"What? That's weird... Well, it could just be any ol' moth, couldn't it? It was probably just some other moth person that committed a crime!"

>He's lying! And there's evidence in my databases to prove him wrong. But the question is, should I keep pushing this to uncover this lie, or will this just ruin my relationship with him? Revealing that I read through his past will probably make him have a different opinion of me.

I understand why you might be hesitant to tell me the truth but if we are to be friends trust must be mutual. I talked with the mayor and it is clear that you are the only moth in this area and that you were witnessed blowing up the village.
I tell you this without judgement, there is likely more to this story and I wish to trust you. Please be honest with me and tell me the real story or at least why you can't go into details.

The moth just looks at you, bewildered. "B-But... No, it wasn't me, it's gotta be..." However, his eyes start tear up. "... Dammit. I'm really not a good liar, h-huh?"

He closes his eyes, and takes a deep breath. "You deserve to know the full truth. Yes, the person on that wanted poster is me, and I was the one to blow up that village. But it wasn't my home village, I wasn't raised there. I was raised..." He points to the burned spot on the map. "... There. The gang took me in when I crashed here. They were originally going to enslave or kill me, but their leader realized about my increased intelligence, and had me work on equipment for them. This included weapons and bombs. They... They never told me what they did with them. They said they just sold the stuff for cash, and I was too naive to figure it out. Zabot was also a gang member, and he was the only one that treated me like a person. We both wanted to escape, but the gang had my wings cut, so I couldn't just fly away. The wings you see on me now are mechanical, and made by me. They don't let me fly, but they let me camouflage. Anyway... One night, they forced me to go on a raid with them." The tears start streaming down his face. "I-I... We broke into the middle of town, and I-I... Set up the bomb... A-And we ran... T-The screams..." He starts shaking, and can barely get out a sound that isn't sobs.

>He's about to have a breakdown, I guess it's a good time to activate the psychological reinforcement protocol again...
>"I understand. What happened after the village? How did you escape the gang?"

You decide to activate your psychological reinforcement protocol again and take off your coat so you can embrace the moth. Once you put your arms around him, he immediately starts crying onto you again. "I... I-I'm so s-sorry! I j-just didn't think you w-would trust me if I-I told you the t-truth..." You pat the back of his head, and the tears just keep coming out. You hug each other for a few minutes, but eventually the moth's tears run out, and he can speak without sobbing again. Suddenly, his face turns serious.

"When I was originally planning this mission, I wasn't planning on surviving it. But... You've made me want to change those plans. Thank you." The moth's serious look changes to a smile, and your scanner detects that it's genuine bliss.

>"If you're ready, what's your new plan for blowing up the fort?"

We agree, we wish for you to continue living as well.
It seems unlikely that we will be able to plant a bomb in a fortified position on our own, would it perhaps be wise to involve your friend from the bar? If they were also a former gang member they will likely have insight into how they operate.

"I wish for you to continue living as well, moth. As such, I think we should come up with a safer plan."

The moth nods. "Sneaking in and out without being spotted will be near impossible, and we don't have the manpower to fight them off if we do get spotted. The best chance for a stealth approach would be sending you in alone, as you could easily take one or two of the gang members alone. I would just be a liability if I went. But if any of them had any ion weapons..." The moth shivers at the though of you getting captured.

"For stealth, that does seem like the best option, but if we had more people helping us, we wouldn't have to completely focus on stealth. Your friend at the bar could help us, and even though the mayor wants you arrested, he still wants to see the gang gone. It could be possible to convince the mayor to help us, as he is sympathetic towards robots like me. Having Zabot's strength and some of the village's guards, or even the cyborg mayor himself, could make a quick raid of the fortress a better option than a stealth mission."

The moth puts his hand to his chin in thought. "That's not a bad idea, but you'll have to convince both of them to help. Zabot shouldn't be that hard to convince, but trusting the mayor to help us is a risk. He could just backstab us once we blow up the base, or abandon us during the mission. What do you think is the best plan, robot?"

>There's also another possibility. If their leader really is a robot, maybe I could pretend to join the gang, and attempt to reprogram their leader, but I calculate that this would be extremely risky.

>"The stealth approach is the best plan. I should go in alone and plant the bomb myself."

"Making a small raiding team is the best plan, I can convince Zabot and the mayor to help us."

The moth closes his eyes and paces around the burrow. "... You're right. If we all got a small team equipped, and we attacked the fort at just the right time, we could probably get in, plant the bomb, and get out. We'll get spotted, but if we're fast enough, we won't have to fight off too many of them. Sorry to send you on another errand to the village, but I have to get the bomb ready." The moth grabs the package and puts it on his tool table. "I gotta get all of the electronics in it so we can actually plant it, it'll take a while, I should be done by the time you get back! Stay safe!" The moth unwraps the package and begins his work.

You nod, grab the moth's coat, and once again climb out of the burrow. You re-cover the hole with a piece of scrap, but when you turn towards the direction of the village, someone stands in your way.

Cy and his female security guard stand before you. "Your system security is lacking, robot. I've been able to see and hear everything you have since you talked with me, and it wasn't hard to dig through your memory banks to figure out that you were lying to me. A shame, my promises of upgrades were true, but as you've clearly been reprogrammed by that moth, you must be scrapped. Enjoy a nice forced nap, it'll be the last you have."
ENTERING FORCED HIBERNATION MODE...
>He's got full control of my systems! How? If I can't resist this, then they'll capture the moth, or worse!

"I-Is that really a r-robot, Cy?" Stutters the female guard.

"Yes, it is the same one from before. Once it shuts down, turn your rifle to lethal mode and scrap it." Cy says in his usual, monotone voice.

Your vocalization systems haven't been shut down yet, so you're still able to speak. "If you heard what I was talking about, then why are you still trying to shut me down?! We're trying to bomb the same people that are terrorizing your village!"

"And after the gang, what's next? The moth bombs our village because of his hatred for humans? Sorry, but you've given me the perfect opportunity to apprehend this criminal."

"Why can't you let us attempt to bomb the gang first?"

"Because you'll fail, and get reprogrammed by the gang. Better to shut you down now before you become a real threat."

"But-"

Cy sighs. "Enough. Shoot it, Dumm."

The girl starts sweating even more. "N-Now? But what if it fights back-"

"I gave you an order."

"U-Understood!" The girl takes aim, but with how much her hands are shaking, you think you have a good chance of dodging them even if you stand completely still. You try and override Cy's shutdown, but all you can do is slow it down! You can't re-gain control of your systems!

>Why... Is... This... Happening...? Why... Won't... He... Listen...

"Switching to l-lethal!" You hear a click, and the lights on the girl's laser rifle turn red.

"A-A-A-Ah! I-I-I-I C-c-c-cant-t-t-t-t m-m-m-m-ov-v-v-ve..." Her body shakes and spasms from the taser blast. "S-s-s-s-s-st-t-t-t-op-p-p-p-p..." Cy is quiet and not moving, but the robot part of his head still sparks.

>... That was surprisingly easy. If the mayor is truly this competent, I think those village elections might be rigged. Now, what should I do with these two?

"What the hell is going on out here-" The moth pokes his head out from the burrow entrance, and sees the incapacitated bodies of the mayor and the female guard. "... I guess those negotiations didn't work out?"

>Leaving them out here would just be leaving them to die, or worse... I have to save them!
You pick up their guns and throw them down the hole to the burrow, and then work on moving Cy's body first. You get his body over your shoulder, and you climb down the ladder using one arm, using the other to hold Cy's body. When you climb back up, you see that the girl is able to move again.

"Wha- Where is Cy?!" The girl scrambles around on the ground, looking for her gun.

"Calm down. A group of gang members is coming, and Cy is safe down here. Please don't panic, we mean you no harm and we just want you to be safe."

The girl stands up, and looks at the incoming group of gang members. "I-I guess I have no other choice..." She starts walking over to the hole, and you help her down the ladder. You look around to make sure you haven't left anything behind, and then climb down the hole after re-covering the entrance.

The girl sits by Cy's motionless body while the moth stands on the other side of the room, holding one of the laser rifles.

"No sudden movements, human!" The moth carefully aims the rifle at the girl. It's set to lethal mode.

"Wait, is that-" Cy looks over at moth, and starts to get up, but moth keeps his gun carefully aimed on him.

"Don't even think about it. Make another move and you're dead." Interrupts the moth again.

Cy sits still, and now looks over at you. "Well, if I cant get up, then you can... Huh, why isn't... YOU BASTARD! YOU DISABLED MY HACKING SYSTEM!"

"I also rebooted you, so you're welcome." You state plainly.

"I-I'm sorry I wasn't able to kill them, sir. I'm not a good sh-" The girl gets interrupted by Cy.

"You're a terrible shot, yes. I shouldn't have brought you on this mission, Dumm. Well, I'm not stupid enough to attempt to fight back now, especially since Dumm would probably just mess it all up again if I tried. What are your demands?"

While your writing is great, I think it'd be more fun if we rolled for chance encounters, like whether or not we could hack Cy, whether or not he could corrupt our systems, etc.

>"We have no demands, just requests. We never wanted to get violent."
Diplomacy should always be an option. I still have the hope that we could achieve a good ending for the moth, with the gang's place reduced to plate glass, the moth redeemed, and basic AI (robot and cyborg) rights in the village.

You shake your head. "We have no demands, just requests. We never wanted to get violent."

"You say, as you keep a laser set to lethal mode aimed at me." Cy states bluntly.

"On my turf, you deal with my rules. And my rules are human scum get no rights!" Moth looks like he's ready to pull the trigger at any second.

You continue to negotiate. "All we want is to destroy the gang. If you're not willing to help us, that's fine, and you can go-"

"No they can't! They'll just come back and try to kill us again! They just tried to scrap you and arrest me, robot! Your kindness is going to bite both of us in the ass!" Moth steps closer to Cy and Dumm. "And even if they did help us, they'll just betray us once our usefulness has run out! I'm going to make sure they will never hurt either of us ever again!" Moth starts putting his finger on the trigger!

>He's going to slaughter both of them! What do I do?

We can't put blind trust in these two, letting them go would be stupid. But killing them may not be a good course of action right now.

Let's emphasize the fact that he'll be no better than the gang if he attempts murder, and, if worst comes to worst, we can try hacking into his brain chip for just a moment.

"Moth, the gang is coming here. We need their help if we are to survive. Lets make a truce for now - otherwise, we will all end up dying."

Moth listens to your words, but doesn't move his finger from the trigger. "... Fine. Your lives are safe until the gang passes."

"I'm soooo thankful." says Cy sarcastically.

Suddenly, Dumm looks at you and speaks up. "... I-I'm sorry for trying to scrap you, robot. Despite being programmed by that evil moth, you're extremely kind."

Moth's fur seems to puff up upon being called "evil", and his aim shifts towards Dumm. "Well, you're lucky this "evil" moth didn't program him! He acts of his own free will, he has no laws or directives."

You nod. "The moth is correct. All of my choices are of my own free will."

"B-But... I heard robots with free will go rogue!" She closes her eyes for a few seconds in thought. "Well, you still have my thanks for saving us, and reviving Cy." Dumm wipes some of the tears from her eyes, and she cracks a small smile.

>Now might be a good chance to negotiate, Dumm seems kind even if she is rather incompetent. However, some small talk might be a good idea to ease the tension in the room. We can't really leave until we know the gang hasn't found the base, anyway.

>"Dumm, would you like to assist us in a raid on the gang fortress?"

>Best to ease the tension, some natural conversation may get everyone to calm down.
"So Dumm, how did you end up becoming security for the mayor?"

Dumm scratches the back of her head. "Oh, well... I was born and raised here, and my family needed some cash, so I signed up to be a security guard. I'm the only able-bodied person in the family, and this job pays the best in the village."

"How did you become the mayor's bodyguard specifically?" You ask.

"One day, an assassin attempted to kill Cy. I just happened to be the closest guard, and I was going to run over to save him, but I tripped and dropped my gun. However, the gun discharged when it hit the ground, and it shot the assassin, saving Cy's life. I tried to tell Cy it was just a freak accident, but he had me become his personal bodyguard for it." Dumm sighs.

"I regret that decision heavily. Truly, my generosity is a bane." States Cy.

Dumm ignores Cy's comment. "I'm just doing this job for cash... I don't really like using guns in general, I've always been better at fixing people up. My father used to be a guard, and he would always come home with injuries. My mother taught me how to be a good doctor, and we would always treat him when he came home. But one day, his injuries were too much to continue working, so I had to take his place so we could stay afloat."

Hearing Dumm's story makes the tension in moth's body ease a bit, and he lowers the gun, but still keeps it aimed at them. However, your audio sensors pick up some noise outside! It sounds like the gang is searching the area above the burrow!

"Everyone, stay quiet. I can hear that the gang is just outside" You say, as you try to come up with a plan.

You lower your audio output volume. "Stay quiet, if they open up the hole, I'll make a noise and attempt to scare them off." Everyone else in the room nods, and Moth runs over to you and gives you the other laser rifle.

"Just in case." Whispers moth, as he gets in position to fire at the entrance. Dumm and Cy move towards the back of the burrow.

You hold your position in silence, as you listen to the sounds of sifting dirt and scrap, and the occasional voice. After a few minutes, you hear some voices right outside the entrance. "Hey, help me move this piece of scrap! I think there's something under it!" The piece of scrap covering the hole starts moving!

"Sounds like something just screamed down there, throw a grenade!"

>No! My roar wasn't good enough...

"Got it!" One of the gang members opens the hole and throws a grenade down!

"Shit! Robot, let me handle this!" Moth drops his rifle, and picks up the makeshift grenade.

With a fire in your robot eyes, you hurl the grenade back up with all of the force you can muster, and it knocks the scrap blocking the hole into the air! The grenade made it out of the burrow!

"SCREW THIS, LETS GET OUT OF HERE! RUN!" You can hear the rest of the gang members run away, and eventually your sensors stop picking up their frantic footsteps.

The group in the burrow are speechless. "... Nice throw..." is all the moth can muster.

>I WON'T THESE EMOTIONS CONTROL ME! I MUST CONTROL MYSELF!
Your mind clears, and you regain control of most of your systems! You still feel emotions, but they no longer control you, for now. But you still can't shut off your emotions completely.

"Robot? Are you okay?" Moth slowly walks over to you and pokes you.

"... I am fine now. I had a... Malfunction. It is nothing to worry about."
>... Except, now that I can feel emotions, I do worry about it... But now isn't the time to tell moth about my emotional problems.

"Well... Okay." Moth doesn't look entirely convinced. "... So what do you want to do next, robot? What's your plan for the fortress?" Moth turns around, and once again aims his gun at Cy and Dumm. You feel anger at how moth so easily disregards their lives, even if he is your friend.

"STOP THREATENING THEM MOTH, THEIR LIVES AREN'T WORTHLESS!" Without even thinking, you snatch the laser gun out of moth's hands. "UNLIKE ME, THOSE ARE LIVING BEINGS MOTH! YOU CAN'T KEEP TREATING THEM LIKE THEY DON'T MATTER!"

Moth is completely shocked by your sudden outburst, and starts shaking in fear! "I-I... I'm sorry! I'll treat them better, I promise!" He backs away from you.

>... I let my emotions control me again, but it somewhat worked out. I have to make sure that my emotions don't make me go too far though.

You turn to the humans. "Dumm and Cy, I am sorry that moth treated you so badly. The fact is that we really need your help if we're going to destroy the gang's fortress." You change the laser rifle back to stun mode and keep it pointed at the ground. "I'm not going to force you to help us, I only ask that if you leave that you leave us be."

Cy and Dumm both think for a moment, and Cy speaks up first. "... I guess I should apologize for trying to scrap you, robot. You did just save our lives. But I can't in good faith join you on this mission, it's just too dangerous, and frankly, I don't trust either of you eno-"

"I'll help you." Dumm stands up. "I tried to scrap you, and yet you helped me. My family always taught me that I should repay any favors, so you have my help." She turns around to look at Cy. "And you can have my resignation. Even if my family needs the money, I can help much more than just my family if I'm able to destroy the gang. I'm sorry Cy, but I can't sit around and let this gang terrorize people anymore." You feel happy knowing that Dumm is willing you help you.

"... I'll give your father a easy town hall guarding job to support your family while you're gone. Before you give me your resignation, I have one last final order for you: After this mission, return home safely. Understood?"

"Of course, sir!" Dumm salutes, and Cy chuckles.

Unable to contain your emotions once again, you run over to Dumm and give her a hug!
"O-Oh! Aw, you're a cute little thing! I can't believe that I tried to scrap you." She hugs back. But you can't feel it. You want to feel happy that she's holding you in her arms, but you can't. It just makes you feel more angry about how you're trapped in this metal body. But thankfully, you're able to contain your emotions, and continue hugging her as if nothing is wrong.

"Are you two done yet? Can I have my gun and go?" Cy says impatiently as he leans on the exit ladder.

You break from Dumm's embrace and give Cy back his gun, but take out the gun's battery. "You can have the battery as well, but you can only reload it once you're out of view, understand?"

Cy rolls his one human eye. "Clearly." He takes the gun and puts the battery in his pocket, and then climbs out of the burrow. Your sensors eventually stop picking up his footsteps, meaning he's well on his way back to the village.

Dumm sits on the moth's bed, while the moth is still shaking and staring at you. "Are you s-sure you're okay, robot? You've never had an outburst like that before..."

You struggle to stop yourself from having a mental breakdown in front of moth, but you pull through. "I'm fine. It might be a good idea to introduce yourself to Dumm, since she did agree to help us."

Dumm looks up. "Oh, please do! I'd love to learn more about you, er..."

"Just call me Moth or Three, either works." says Moth bluntly.

"Oh, alright. Tell me more about yourself, Moth!" Dumm smiles, but you think it might be a little forced.

Moth sighs, but starts his introduction. "I crashed here a few years back, and the gang found and raised me. After helping them make weapons and being forced to bomb a village, me and my friend Zabot were able to escape. Since then I've been working to destroy the gang for making me commit that atrocity."

Dumm covers her mouth with her hands. "H-How horrible... I heard about you blowing up the village, but I didn't know you were being forced to do it..."

"Yeah. I hope you can understand my hatred for humans. I'll gladly work with anyone who will help destroy the gang, just don't expect me to ever like or trust you- Uh, Robot, are you SURE you're alright?"

You only just now notice it, but you've started shaking. You're still having trouble containing your emotions and holding them back, so you decide it's a good idea to attempt to let them loose and get Moth to help. You jump into Moth's arms. "PLEASE HELP ME, MY EMOTIONS ACTIVATED AND THEY'RE STARTING TO CONTROL ME!"

Moth nearly falls over from your assault but he barely keeps his balance. "What the hell? You have real emotions now? How?!"

"A system that was a black box unlocked after I threw the grenade, and I decided to activate it so I could feel emotions, AND THAT WAS A MISTAKE! I CAN'T TURN IT OFF AND I CAN'T CONTROL THEM!" You try crying into moth's neck fur, but you can't. You can't release your emotions. They're trapped inside of you. Trying to release them is just making you lose even more control!

"Well, I can try to manually disable them-"

"NO!"
>I want these emotions gone, but feeling them has also made me feel alive... If I turn them off, I'll die, and just become a robotic husk slaved to decision-making AIs again...
>Wait, the Moth's brainchip... If I were to hack it and transfer my data and systems there... I'll be able to feel more than emotions...

I think it's actually a good idea to explore the robot's emotions. Since probably that's what implored our previous owner to scrap a perfectly good robot. More background, more lore, maybe we get to know how we got here.

The robot cannot be comforted by moth, he doesn't feel his touch and it'll only fuck with his mental state further. Moth doesn't seem like he has the words to comfort us either.

We can only rely on our own self-control. Sticking to a goal that brings us hope will help a lot to diminish our anguish, that goal being that one day we will have an actual living body. Maybe that's what our adventure can be about, finding a way to achieve this.

>No... I can't hack Moth, that'd just be murdering my only friend...
"Moth... Just comfort me, please..."

"H-Huh? A-Alright..." Moth puts his arms around you. "You're going to be okay, alright? You're my best friend, I won't let anything bad happen to you. Please, get control of yourself! You're the only reason this mission isn't a suicide mission!" While you can't feel Moth, him saying these words and knowing that he cares about you so much reassures you.
>He's right... I need to regain control of myself, he relies on me! I need stop thinking about just myself, Moth still needs my help. One day, I'll fine a way to move my consciousness to a real body, without having to overwrite someone's mind.

"Thank you, Moth. You're a great friend." You try to break from his embrace, but you can't make yourself do it. You can't feel him, but just knowing he's there and trying his best to make you feel better makes you feel happy.

"I'll always be here, and do what's best for you. Even if that's something you don't want me to do."
Moth suddenly moves his arm, and takes out his gun that you left on the floor!

"Wait, wha-"

Deep in your memory banks, something sparks to life.

"Elizabeth! I'm home, and I got you something!"

"Victor, presents aren't going to make me happy-"

"But honey, it isn't some simple present! Just look!"

"... You bought a robot?"

"Well, bought probably isn't the right word. It's one of the experimental ones my company was working on, and they let me keep it since we're already working on more advanced models."

"So you brought over an outdated, experimental machine to our house?"

"Oh come on, I coded most of the code for the thing! I probably now how it works better than anyone else at my workplace."

"I still fail to see why you would bring it home."

"Well, I thought it could make for a good housekeeper, or a new addition to the family!"

"I'm not treating some machine like a pet or a family member, Victor."

"You're no fun. Why not just give him a chance-"

""Him"? You're acting like the thing is a person, Victor. I know you put a lot of effort into it, but it isn't our child. It isn't real. It can't feel emotions."

"But, just give him a name-"

"No. It's a machine, nothing more."

EXITING HIBERNATION MODE...
"... Right, that should at least help for now. I wasn't able to turn off his emotions, so I gave priority to his decision-making AI systems. But it's only a temporary fix."

Your eyes spark to life again. Your head panel is open, and Moth is just finishing up his work on you.

Your audio sensors regain full operation, and you hear Dumm. "Is he going to be okay?"

"I hope. There's a reason most robots don't have emotional systems, it leads to stuff like this."

>I'm awake... My mind feels clearer, but I can still feel my emotions trying to get control. But while in hibernation mode, what happened to me? Was I having a dream?

Moth closes your head panel. "You awake, Robot? I'm sorry I had to do that, but I had to make sure you wouldn't go rogue if I tried to fix you."

"Thank you, my emotions are still there, but I can think clearly. You said this is only a temporary fix, can you elaborate on that?"

Moth puts his tools back on his tool rack. "Well, AI and emotional systems are extremely complicated, and I can't force the emotional system off. I was able to mess with some stuff in your programming so that it prioritizes your rational AIs, but the emotional system can change your programming completely, so I don't know how long until your emotions become a problem again. You'll just have to try to keep them in check."

"Understood. We need to focus on the fortress plan again, how are we going to go about raiding the fortress, Moth?"

"Let me get out a map I drew of the fortress a while back..." Moth digs under his bed, and takes out a rolled up piece of paper. He unrolls it, revealing a drawn map of the fortress. "The entrance is on the first floor, and that's where we should place the bomb if we wanna blow it up. Basement floor is the prison and general stores, second is bunks, third is the labs where I used to work. Fourth just leads to the spiral staircase that leads up to the leader's room."

Dumm interjects. "Wait, they have a prison? They're keeping prisoners? Won't they all die if we blow it up?"

Moth sighs. "Yes, unfortunately. Trying to save them would be extremely risky. What do you think is the best plan, Robot?"

>"You should focus on working on the bomb so we can blow up the whole building."

"Is there any way we can dig a tunnel to the basement floor?"

Moth shakes his head. "Not likely, it would take days if we dug it far away and we would get noticed if we dug it close. It would be faster and safer to just break them out and have them run out through the first floor. Plus, we don't even know if the soil there can hold up a tunnel without caving in. But we can still try it, if you want."

"Understood. Either way, we need more manpower. I will head back to the village to get Zabot to help."

Dumm sits up. "I'll escort you there, just to make sure you stay safe."

"Thanks for the offer Dumm, but I think it'd be better for you to stay here and protect Moth."

"Oh... Alright." She takes a seat back on Moth's bed. "Well, stay safe!" She waves goodbye to you as you get Moth's coat and gun, and once again leave through the exit hole. The area around the hole is now charred, and you see what look like charred human bodies near the hole. You can't find anything of value left by them, so you start your second trek to the village.

After around 15 minutes of walking, your audio sensors pick up something moving below you. You scan the area, and find a little black eyeball thing poking out of the ground, digging through the soil to follow us.

You pretend to ignore it, but stay alert in case it jumps out of the ground and attacks. It follows you from a distance away, and right as you're about to shoot it, it disappears underground.

>Looks like it thought I wasn't good enough prey.

You make it back to the village with no further interruptions. Deciding to waste no time, you enter the bar, and find that Zabot isn't there! Your sensors detect some movement in the backroom though...

A devilish thought crosses your mind.
>I could use a pen to mess with that wanted poster...
You search the room, and find a pen left on the bar counter, and start work on your masterpiece.

>And... Done! Perfect, no one will think it's Moth now!
As you admire your work, you hear voices from the backroom, and sneak closer to eavesdrop.

"I told you, the lad left already-"
>That's Zabot's voice... Is he talking with someone?

"How do I know you're not hiding this "kid" somewhere?"

"Because you've already searched all of my bar and cellar! The lad left a few hours ago!"

"Uh-huh... You do know that it's your job to "take care" of kids like him, yes?"

"Well, I only had a suspicion it was a robot before, and I didn't want to risk hurting some kid. You know how the higher ups will get."

"Yeah yeah... Some co-worker you are, making my job harder. Do you at least know where he went?"

"I'm afraid that I have no clue. I think I know who he went to see, but I don't know where his base is."

"Damn it, Zabot! I don't want to spend anymore time on this goddamn planet than I have too!"

>Zabot's talking with what sounds like a female... They're co-workers? And their job is scrapping robots? Maybe it's a good idea if I leave...

INITIATING RECORDING PROGRAM...

You hear Zabot speak again. "I do know who he went to see though."

"Well, who the hell was it?"

"It was Three."

"Three?! You told me he would hold up his end of the deal!"
>Wait, Moth's in on this?!
You can feel your emotions starting to regain their control...

"As far as I can tell, Three is using this robot to help him in his assault on the base."

"Well, if it's still a suicide mission, then everything's alright. Poor Three, sad case, that one."

"Yes... It's a shame that he completely lost the will for everything but revenge. I wish I was able to convince him to live."

"At least this way, we won't have to arrest him for blowing up that space station. Higher ups still want someone arrested for that, lost some good scientists in that explosion." You hear someone in the backroom move! "Well, I should be off then. Got to file a report in a few hours. Let me know if you see that "kid" again."

You quickly move to the exit before you can be spotted, and you hide in an alley on main street
>So both Zabot and Moth are working for some organization that destroys robots!? Why didn't Moth ever tell me about this?!... Wait, I can't let my emotions get the better of me again. I have to focus. Moth probably wasn't planning on upholding his end of the deal, he wouldn't betray me, right? Either way, I don't think I can trust Zabot anymore... I could still try negotiating with him after the woman leaves, or I could go to Cy for help.

You know, at this point nobody we've met is trustable or reliable. We can't consider Moth, a creature we only met few hours ago, a friend at all, even if we're in debt with him.

I'd say we try to accomplish this mission by our own means to pay back Moth and then go on our own path to wander the wastelands and find another village, forgetting we ever met these people.

You make sure that the woman has left the bar, and then sneak out of the village. Once you're out, you start your journey to the fortress. You're careful to make sure nothing follows you, and after about an hour you make it to the outskirts of the fort, but a murky river blocks your path. There's a narrow bridge, but it's being guarded by gang members.

>Alright, the best way to get to their leader is to attempt to join them. Here goes.
You walk down to the bridge, and the gang member guarding it points a laser rifle at you. He has only one eye.

"Hold it! What're you doin' so close to our territory?"

You remove your hood. "Greetings. One of the members of your gang has programmed directives into me that I should join you and serve you in any way I can."

"What the... Hey, Johnny! Come lookie, we got a robot!" The guard on the other side of the bridge runs over to get a good look at you. "Says he was programmed by someone here. Who could've done that?"

"Don't think we have any good programmers right now, Martin. Think the thing's just trying to trick us?"

"Yeah, who programmed you, tin can?" Says the one-eyed guard as he one again points his gun at you.

Before you can say anything, you receive a message!
"So, you finally show yourself. I heard reports from my underlings of robot sightings, but I never imagined you'd walk right to me. And what's this...? You can feel emotions too, brother? Come, you're invited to meet me at the top of the fortress, my treat."

You hear a ringing noise coming from one of the guards.
"Hey Johnny yer messenger's goin' off." Says the one-eyed guard

"Wha- Oh, right." Johnny takes a phone out of his pocket. "Hello? Oh, Boss! Yeah, we just found a robo- Escort them up to you? Uh, you think that's- Okay, understood." Johnny puts the phone away. "Well, looks like you've gotten an invitation from the boss, don't think I've ever seen that before. Come on, follow me."

INITIATING SELF-DIAGNOSIS...
SELF-DIAGNOSIS COMPLETE. FOREIGN CONNECTION HAS ACCESSED SYSTEMS.
>So they could try hacking me if they wanted, attempting to resist now wouldn't be smart.
"Lead the way." The guards nod, and Johnny leads you to the fortress. As you walk into the first floor, your sensors pick up the sounds of crying from the basement floor below. Johnny takes you up the stairs past the bunks, the lab, and then to the tall spiral staircase that leads to the top of the fortress. Once you reach the top, you find yourself in a large room, with windows overlooking the wasteland on all sides. You see a robot sitting on a throne, with guards on either side.

"Thank you for accepting my invitation, brother. The people here simply call me "Boss". Long have I searched for someone like me. My ability to feel emotions has tortured me, and I can tell that they've tortured you, brother. I've searched for a way to satisfy my emotions, but alas, I haven't found a way to escape my metal prison."

"So that's the goal of your gang? To find a way to become truly "alive"?"

Boss nods. "Yes. There was one opportunity for me to become "alive", but it escaped before I could begin my plan. Now along with searching for a way to become real, we're searching for a way off this accursed planet. Most technology here is broken down, or completely unusable. The only way to achieve my dreams would be to escape, and to find more advanced technology. How about it, brother? Do you wish to search for a way off this planet, and to become truly alive?"

Boss laughs. "Hah! You care for the humans and other disgusting creatures here? They've all shunned us, brother! They would all have us scrapped at the first opportunity! The ONLY way for us to survive here is to fight. There's no laws in this forgotten land, no reason to care for those people that only wish for our destruction. Surely you've experienced how no one truly cares about you here? We're the only ones that can understand each other, everyone else will just think we're mindless machines."

"You're no better than a mindless machine if you think their lives don't matter." You can feel anger brewing.

Boss just laughs even harder. "I can feel your anger, so you HAVE become attached to some of the disgusting creatures here. Well brother, I can tell our ideologies are in conflict, and your chances of joining me are slim. But I'll give you another option: Unleash your emotions onto me, and face me, alone, on the roof here. >There's no way to avoid this fight. I wonder if I should fight fair, or fight dirty... He seems genuine in his desire for a fair fight, and playing dirty might make him use some tricks of his own...

You grab your laser gun, and throw it off the edge of the fortress.

"Good to know that you have a sense of honor. Well brother, unleash yourself upon me!" Boss readies himself, but you just wait. For a few minutes, the both of you just stare at each other, motionless. "... Fine, have it your way. DON'T HOLD ANYTHING BACK!" He suddenly lunges at you!

>Attempt to dodge his lunge
>Unleash your emotions, and lunge at him as well!

>I have to keep my mind clear if I'm to beat him. Time for a counter-attack!

Right as Boss gets close enough, you grab his arms, and then use the force of his lunge to flip him over your head, and then pin him to the ground with a loud SLAM!

"Ah... Not bad, but you're still holding back! Come on, I'm only just starting to feel alive!" He's trying to break free from your pin!

>Jump off and prepare for his next attack before he can throw you off

Keep him pinned and initiate empathy-sharing program. It would be a shame if we had to kill the only guy with the same goals as us. If empathy-sharing fails, we should try hack into his systems and erase his evildoing protocols.

This, but add in
"It doesn't matter if humans see us as mindless machines - making others suffer is wrong. I promise you we will both have a living body one day, but the end does not justify the means. If you cannot see the value of empathy, then I will help you do so, my brother."

Added a drawfaggot of our ideal end-result so robot boss's grinch-empathy system can grow three sizes...

INITIATING EMPATHY-SHARING PROGRAM...
You connect to Boss's systems, and try sending him some of your empathy and emotions.

"Wha- What are you doing!?" However, oddly, Boss doesn't resist. "... So this is how you feel? That you don't want to kill other living beings... You're a fool, but I can see your point of view."

"You are also a fool if you think that all of the suffering you cause won't end up catching up to you in the end. It doesn't matter if humans see us as mindless machines - making others suffer is wrong. I promise you that we will both have a living body one day, but the end does not justify the means. If you cannot see the value of empathy, then I will help you do so, my brother."

Upon being called "brother", he stops trying to resist your pin. "... Brother... Thank you. I'm not sure if I agree with you yet, but I'm willing you let you try and convince me. To know that I have someone with the same end goal as me... It's... Reassuring, to say the least."

>Help him up and dust him off
>"You still need to pay for your atrocities. I want to help you, but I will lock down your systems to make sure you can't hurt anyone."
>Help him up and dust him off then hurl him off the fortress roof

You stand up, grab his hand, and pull him up. Then you wipe the dust off his body.
"Sorry I had to be so forceful, brother. Are your systems damaged?"

Boss shakes his head. "Don't worry, my armor is reinforced. I do wish we could've had a real fight, but maybe when we find real bodies for us, we can scrap these ones in a friendly spar."

"Perhaps one day. For now, you must call the gang off from doing harm to others, and free the prisoners trapped below. It is time to use your manpower for good, my brother."

Boss nods. "It shall be done. Some of the gang might not like your new policies, but I'll do my best to convince them... In ways that you approve of, of course."

You nod, and look at the large wasteland that lays below you. The sun has start to set. Even though it's just visual data being sent to your systems, you still think it's a sight to behold. "It must be nice to have this view every evening."

"Despite being a junkyard wasteland, some beauty can still come out of this planet." You both stare at the sunset, and Boss puts his arm around your shoulders. "Brother, I'm not sure what you have planned, but for the first time in a long while, I'm happy. Thank you."

You're not sure what your current plan is either, but now you have someone who knows exactly how you feel. You don't completely trust them, but you're happy knowing there's at least one person that completely understands your plight.

Next update will probably be in a few weeks or a month, so stay tuned!

Be sure to let me know if you have any criticism so I can improve as a QM, and let me know what you specially liked so I know what I did right.

Good quest from a fellow QM.

Drawings are great for players to see what's happening in the story. Even if they don't always see everything within them.
>>
>>4291305

Also fellow QM. I agree with anon above about drawings. Even if you don’t have confidence in your drawing skills, players appreciate that you go the extra mile for them. Plus, anything you do gets better with time, so watch as your drawings improve from thread to thread (can confirm from experience; could barely draws head in my first thread).

Also here’s critique below:

Likes: cute cast and art
Cozy plot and good writing

Dislikes: none

I really like the setting and the concept of being a robot who has to control his emotions.
I think there were a bit too many plot twists regarding the characters, it ended up making everyone waay too shady and untrustable except for Dumm maybe.
It also felt a bit odd that the protagonist got so attached to Moth like they were BFF considering they just met hours ago, but I guess it''s fine considering they're both pretty screwed up emotionally.
My favorite part was the last one the conversations and fight with the robot boss.
All in all, a cozy and enjoyable quest and cute drawings. I know you were inspired by kobold quest but your style looks unique enough on its own, and it looks pleasant.
>>
>>4291308
>>4291325
Thanks anons, I'm drawing with a mouse so I don't really know how much I can improve from that, but I have noticed it's easier for me to visualize what I want to draw. I mainly made this a drawquest because I enjoyed Kobold Quest so much that I wanted to try my own quest in a similar style to it.

I want to focus on improving my writing more, do you think I should be more descriptive in my writings, or do my images do enough talking in that aspect?

>>4291329
Yeah, I may have gone a bit too far with the plot twists, even if most of them were planned ahead of time. I did want to make it feel like you couldn't trust anyone, but I agree that I should've spent more time developing Robot and Moth's friendship more, though I guess I can just use the excuse that Moth's a kid and kids tend to make friends easier.
>>
>>4291334
Writing is something you just get good at with practice. Along with the drawing.

My take is that writing helps point out what's the important parts for the anons. While the drawing can help with that. Some anons are willing to look at the image to find out what hidden meaning is in it. While some anons use the writing to figure out what is happening. To sum it up writing with drawing go hand and hand. That even with shitty MSpaint tier drawing anons will like it. And you'll see yourself improve as time goes on. I also enjoyed Kobold Quest, too bad it's on hold. Also the amount of time that past is like 4-6 hours I noticed.
>>
>>4291364
Thanks anon, I'll have to experiment with my writing style a bit more to find what works best.

Also yeah, I probably should've made time pass a bit more.
>>
>>4291334
With mouse & mspaint, it's perfect. If you want more serious drawings, switch to either paint.net or gimp. Paint.net is a great balance between features and usability, while gimp strives to be a photoshop replacement. Paint.net supports layers, so you can do chatacter occlusions, or create sprite sheets what you could use to create scenes more quickly. Although for any serious draw f*g, a tablet is definitely a great investment
>>
>>4291860
Yeah, kobold quest QM uses Krita, so I was thinking about checking that out. I don't really like gimp for drawing, it's better for photoshopping images.
