Today was the first time you had smiled, in a long, long time.

You get up from the futon in your tiny apartment, and you look into the mirror. There you are. You. No longer the insecure, miserable wreck you were a year ago when your parents suddenly committed suicide. No longer overwhelmed about suddenly dealing with an adult life all on your own, alone, stuck in a foreign country. You had a home now. A job. You were cooking your own food, and eating better.

You had matured.

A bit, at least.

“Alex Miller. 20.” you finally wrote down onto the top of your anxiety self-assessment test, and you handed it over to the large, Japanese man across the desk.

“Thank you.” he replied in English, with a mild accent. Then he adjusted his glasses, and scanned the pages. You rubbed your palms together in your lap as you looked at him with a warm smile, eager. Then, he looked up to you. “I’m very proud of your progress, Alex.” your psychiatrist told you.

“Thank you Dr. Sato.” you reply. “I’ve been doing a lot better. I’ve been… I’ve been doing some more stuff of my own too. Some hobbies, like you asked.”

“Oh? I’m very glad.” he said back and smiled warmly.

“Yeah, I’ve...

“Phenomenal.” he replied. “That’s great.”

“I want to get better as soon as possible, Dr. Sato.” you then admitted, with a tinge of eagerness. “Is there anything else I can do?”

“We can’t rush these things.” he replied, as he brought up another paper from his desk and started to scribble on it. “Step by step, Alex. But you’re doing well. I’m changing your medication. Here, you’ll be taking these from now on”. He slid a prescription across the table to you. You looked down at it, understanding the technical kanji littered across the printed form.

「Anti-depressants.」

“They’re milder.” he explained. “Once a day, after breakfast. You can get them from the pharmacy downstairs.”

“Alright.” you reply. “I... I just want to go back to college. I just want to be better as soon as possible. Next year I want to get back to studying….

“I understand, Alex.” he replied. “And I’m proud of you. If anything happens, let me know, alright? The best choice you have done is look for help. And I’m the person who will help you.”

“T-thank you.” you reply, your palms rubbing into each other, your eyes starting to tear and you look down.

“It’s alright if you want to cry.” Dr. Sato reminded you.

“I-I’m just very happy. Thank you, Dr. Sato.” you tell him, wiping the wetness off your eyes with your index and thumb. “I… want to get back to having a life.”

Your fists tighten, with determination. “I’ll do my best to get through this.”

After getting your pills from the pharmacy, you go over to the supermarket, and buy some fresh vegetables.

“Wan tausando and wan handredo yen, pureezu, sah.” the cashier told you, after ticking your cabbage and other stuff.

“Thanks, I’ll be paying in cash.” you reply, in perfect Japanese, then lay your bills and coins on the small tray next to her. You knew that you shouldn’t pay the cashier directly in this country.

The uniformed woman made a double-take, her eyes going wide in surprise, for her to then return to her professional serenity and counted the money, to then nod. “Zankanyu sah, hava gude dei!”.

This kind of thing happened way too often.

“Look ma, a gaijin.” you heard a child mention, tugging onto the skirt of his mother.

“No, no. A gaikokojin, dear.” her mother corrected in a hushed tone, teaching the more polite form of that noun.

After eating lunch, you get to the Easy Egg Eikaiwa by train, a English conversation academy you worked at in the evenings. You go through its modest steel and glass door, and make your way to the office area in the back.

“Good evening, Aleks.” your boss tells you, peering over her mug of coffee.

“Good evening Miss Nakamura.” you reply, and get to your files and review the lesson that you were going to give later today. The TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) diploma you got a while ago had saved your ass, here. Normally, they want graduates, but this small startup was fine with just this from you - and they paid pretty well.

It was soon time for the kids to arrive, and your Japanese-native partner, Chika Takahashi, hadn’t arrived yet.

Then, you heard a rush at the door and someone marching to the office. Right then, Miss Nakamura pulled out a map of the area, unfolded it and started to pretend to read it. Soon after, through the door, the young girl barged in.

“I’m so sorry for being late, I got lost agai- I’m sorry! I won’t be late again, I deeply apologize!” she rushed to say, as she made a deep bow.

“I see.” Nakamura replied, deadpan, peering over the map. “The class will begin soon, are you ready?”

“Yes, of course, I reviewed on the way here.” Chika replied, still bowing.

“You shouldn’t be bowing to me right now.” Nakamura stated.

“Ah - sorry, Alex!” Chika then stated and bowed to you. “I should’ve been here to go over it with you. I sincerely apologize.”

“...Don’t worry about it.” you reply. “Let’s do our best, alright?”

“Yes!” she replied, earnestly.

--------------------
>>
After the classes were over, you and Chika walked together back to the train station as usual.

“Hey, ya been a lot less serious than usual now Mr. Seriousface. Ya got that there funny smile there, boyo, hehehe.” she tells you, reverting to having a bit of her Kansai accent, and then pokes your shoulder teasingly. “Ah! Don’t tell me ya got a girlfriend hidden somewhereee Aleksuuuu”

You haven’t told them about your depression problems. You haven’t told anyone for that matter, except for Dr. Sato and anonymous help forums on the internet.

“Ah, well.” you chuckle and look to a side.

“I’m just glad to be walking next to a cute girl like you” you reply, then you chuckle. “I'm still available if you're that interested” you tease.

She laughs. “Oh, you’re dangerous!” she chortles. “This foreigner is going to round up all of the Japanese girls for himself!”

You chuckle. “Be careful now when we get to the station, you’re going to delay the train with your looks.”

She laughs more, and a few bypassers give her some passing glances from being loud.

“Hey, listen Alex.” the lanky girl then tells you. “Want to meet up with me and some friends for karaoke tomorrow?”

“Yeah, sure.” you reply, not having a better plan aside from the usual masturbating and videogames for the weekend.

“Awesome. I’ll send you the direction to you phone then. Does 11PM work for you?”

“Yeah, no problem.” you reply.

“Great, see you there then, casanova.” she replies with a wide toothy smile.

--------------------

The next morning, a Saturday, as you were in bed and looking for the next Himiwako or gigantomastia thot on Instagram, you were interrupted by a message on your phone.

CHIKA: “Heya Alex. Excited for today ∠( ᐛ 」∠)_?”

You look at the notification for a while. It looked like a shitpost, sure, that was her usual style of texting. You thought of what to write, but for now, you finished your pending business.

--------------------

You threw away the used tissues and then you typed in:

ALEX: “Yeah. You?”

And you stared at the screen. She didn’t reply immediately. You sigh and look away, into the upper parts of the walls of your tiny apartment. It was time that you got a girlfriend or something, you had never had one before. While you weren’t entirely over your porn addiction, you felt like you actually had a chance for something tangible and real now. Or at least, something to look forwards to: Chika. And if she rejected you? You wouldn’t mind. Because you finally felt like you had the inner strength to deal with these kind of things. To venture out into the unknown, take risks.

Thanks to the therapy.

That reminded you to go over and to take your new pills - Daruzon - you got over to the sink, and popped one into your mouth, and swallowed it down with a sip of water from the tap.

Then, your throat hurt, like if it was being scratched from the inside by the pill. You coughed for a moment, and then drank more water, trying to force it down. More swallows later, it was all down. But now your stomach has an ache. Maybe your body was reacting bad to the pill, you thought. It wasn’t too bad. Maybe it would just go away. Regardless, you figured you could call your psychiatrist on Monday about this, because

You had a girl to catch.
>>
CHIKA: “Meet me at the usual station at 10PM, we can go together and I’ll show you how to get there. d=(´▽`)=b”

Well, you were there now, the one near the Easy Egg Eikawa, and it was 10PM. And she wasn’t around. Maybe she was late again? Your head started to hurt too, but you ignored it. It wasn’t much.

It became 10:30PM. Still, nothing. You tried calling her, nothing.

Man. Maybe she got lost again. Curious, you decide to wander around, trying to see if she had gotten the roads confused or something.

10:50 PM. You haven’t found her yet, and you don’t know in what neighbourhood you’re in anymore yourself - but you figure that you can always just return to any train station to get orientated again.

You look on your phone’s GPS for the nearest station, and then you start to walk there, going by several dark alleys, until when you entered one, on the floor, you found Chika.

She was staring into the sky, lifelessly, with her hair tossed over her face, and blood leaking from her skull. Your breathing accelerates, you look around. What the fuck happened. Is this even real? What? How - How?

You turn around, finding a large kid sitting on the ground with his hands in his face, then start to stand up.

“P-please, please d-don’t call the cops on me. You d-don't get it.” he said, picking up a bloodied baseball bat from the shadows.

If the Bow is make believe then we should be able to get away with killing other people. No finger prints. No dna. No lead in them. No nothing. Hopefully untraceable.

Given it seems he is wearing armor, sword would just get blocked.

We're already pretty fit from the gym, let's use it to our advantage with a melee weapon.

You mentally wish for the Armor, and it then suddenly appears on your body.

TORSO ARMOR ACQUIRED_

Then you get the fuck out of there, and head towards the train station, trying to keep cool. But you couldn’t. Your head was beating with your blood pressure, your hands were sweating, your movements were twitchy and sudden. People stared at you - more than usual. 98% of Japan’s population was Japanese. Your caucasian face stuck out like a sore thumb, and with you this dread-struck and anxious, even more.

But soon enough, the train arrived, and you got on, and left.

--------------

You get to your house as quick as you could, and you triple-check that you’ve locked the door right. Then you barricade it with your only chair and table, and you stay on your bed, staring at it, like if someone was about to jump out of it to get you.

What the fuck had just happened.

You take a moment to look at your hand, and the sword reappeared in your grip as soon as you wished it to. Startled, you wished it gone, and it immediately disappeared. You stared at your empty hand for a moment, until you re-summoned the blade, and then just held it in your hand. It had a comfortable weight to it.

And you gently poked it into the half-empty box of tissues that you had next to your bed. It went right through, like a ghost. You tried the wall, and it went just through that as well. It wasn’t interacting with anything of the real world. But it felt like it had weight. Curious, you dismiss the sword and then get to your bathroom and pull out the weight scale, and you stand on it.

63.1 kg

You then summon your sword, and you can feel its weight in your hands. Then you look back at the scale at your feet.

63.1 kg

Your eyes widen. So you were just imagining that this sword had weight? You spun it in your hand. Then, you tried to leave it on the sink, but you couldn’t. It just returned to floating near your palm, until you willed it to disappear.

You then looked at your body, and willed the armor onto yourself. Suddenly, you felt a gentle amount of gravity on your body as the samurai-style plates of protection appeared on your body. Again, the scale still read 63.1 kg.

Shit. So you were stuck in this fucking game? How could you get out?

“I want to get out of the game.” you say out loud. Nothing happened. You willed as hard as you could to leave. Nothing happened.

You slammed your fists onto the sink. Then you held your head. You started to tear - you didn’t want to die. You didn’t want to fight, and kill people. You just wanted to get back to living a normal life. Get a girlfriend. Study for your dream job. Have friends.

“FUCK.” you yell out and get into your bed and pull up your phone to Instagram to forget your worries in the best way you knew.

You wake up on Sunday, and after pulling yourself to have a shower and breakfast you start to investigate on your laptop what all of this is about. The ‘Headgame’ or whatever it was called. Await Daruma? Imaginary weapons that force people to commit suicide? Things like that. Whatever you could find on the internet.

You find /r/headgame, and /r/awaitdaruma on reddit, but they have been banned. Google’s cache doesn’t let you see it either. You scour 2chan for information, finding news about a recent uptick in suicides and homicides. But nothing about the game - so you decide to try to make a post.

“Does anyone know about the Headgame?” you write. Then, you hit ‘post’.

“Your message has been detected to be spam.” you get instead.

What? Why?

You hold your head. You scratch your scalp, not knowing what to do, what to resort to. Who to resort to. How to solve this. You were going to have to have death fights while you were outside now? Frustrated, overwhelmed, you go back to bed, you get your tissues and open Instagram again.

It was night, and in front of you, splayed victoriously, were pages of ruled paper with notes on possible contacts and information. Your mouth was held open, with an awkward smile, as you admired your trophies. This was so much more than you had expected after hitting a dead end before. But you had found so much out, miraculously. After spending the rest of the day scouring and digging around, using euphemisms like "BrainPlay" or "SkullFun", and even learning out how to access the dark web with a certain internet client, you finally started to pick up on how things would work.

You read the description. “Welcome to a death survival game that is going on only in the head of the participants. Kill to refresh your equipment’s ammo, and kill to steal other player’s equipment! Can you make it out alive? Can you solve the mystery of this new phenomenon that is tearing apart New York? Join Skullfun Roleplay, and figure it out!”

Yeah that was suspiciously similar to the Headgame. You joined.

Oceanman#2932: Welcome! @....

>Write in your Discord handle

Oceanman#2932: Check out the #rules, alright? If you have question, you may ask. My DM are open if you prefer! Please check out the #lore too!

You check it out, and read it, and it’s got a couple of grammar and spelling mistakes. And it’s exactly like what you’ve been living, weapons that only you and other players can perceive, some kind of computer program in people’s heads, but then, there was this as well.

“...and in a world of internet and easy information, the player in the game have their strategies and coordination difficulted by those in control. For many of those people are player also.”

You DMed Oceanman.

“Hey. So. I don’t know how to approach this but. You know those Japanese dolls with big red heads?” you told him, in Japanese.

“I know what you mean.” Oceanman replied. “You are a player, right?”

“Yeah.” you reply.

“I’m so glad to have finally found someone. I’ve been trying to find anyone else who was also one. Things have been crazy.” he said back.

“Yeah. I know. Fucked up.” you type back.

But not only that. You also found a thread on an imageboard on the darknet which was blatant about what was going on and were doxing players, titled “Darumafags”

OP Anon: ITT: The usual bullshit and complaining about Daruma-chan.
Anon: Short guy with glasses that works at the McDonalds at Shibuya station is a player.
Anon: He’s Daichi Yamamoto. He has Suicide Mines and Torso Armor, all vanilla.
Anon: sasuga glass orb anon.
Anon: Dibbs on Daichi. Don’t interfere.
Anon: what’s the best upgrade for guns?
Anon: Depends on your playstyle. I just go for more Stocks to spook people.
Anon: Get Inflict Sleep if you can roll it, its OP.
Anon: Is any group recruiting?
Anon: Go solo. Groups are drama. (´ • ω • `)
Anon: what game is this? Is it like Pokemon Go??? where can i get it?
Anon: You need a special invite
Anon: Plenty of people trying to make groups now that there are more players.
Anon: i once put a ⅓ bomb at a meet-up lmao. 5 easy kills gg
Anon: What is a ⅓ bomb?
Anon: You need to get 3 kills for 1 stock.
Anon: Daruma-san should nerf those.
Anon: I don’t think he’s going to do anything unless it’s some crazy bug like the old umbrella dupe.

Curious, you ask a question: Anon: “What happens if you eat another pill?”

Soon, you get a reply.

Anon: “Nothing. People have tried chugging a lot of them to get more power. They died.”

But, there was more. As you crawled the internet, you got a notification from the newest Instagram thot on the block, ‘Catspice’, touted around certain communities as the ‘next Himiwako’ because of her insane chest size. She only had three pictures of herself uploaded to Instagram so far, but she was gaining popularity fast from how mind-bogglingly gorgeous she was, plus creep shots of her real self which dispelled most arguments over if she was just all Photoshop or not and caused even more hype and awe. Racially, you could tell that he was a ‘hāfu’, someone who was half-Japanese.

You quickly tabbed to Instagram and saw that “Check my Patreon~!” was read on the image, with herself under it and pointing to it, and the same in Japanese in the image’s text. Huh, so she was going for cash so soon. You then clicked her profile page to see if that had changed as well, but then, the image was gone, and you got another notification. It was the same picture, but its text had been replaced with something else. “Check out my Patreon :3”.

You had three big leads. The Skullfun roleplay Discord and Oceanman, who seemed to be trying to fish people in the clearnet, the Darumafags on the darknet who were going solo, and Catspice.

It was late at night. Were you going to make it to warn Daichi? You could at least try. You felt your hands sweat again. Man. You’d maybe be getting yourself into another fight. But you had to go do it. But before that, you stared at the screen for a while, and then you brought up Instagram again, on Catspice’s profile. You were going to send her a message. This was it.

Your fingers hovered over the keyboard for a few moments. What to write? You closed your fists. Your mouth was dry and your tongue slipped over your lips. Just… Something short, for now. You had to go to Shibuya. Soon.

“Hey Catspice.” you wrote. “Await Daruma?”

You hit Enter. That’s it. She should be able to take the hint if she was actually in the Headgame. You left your computer, and got dressed as quickly as you could as you got onto a train to Shibuya.

--------------------------------------

You arrived to the station, and then got outside to the bustling Shibuya, bright, with colorful advertisements everywhere. Despite it being this late on a Sunday, there were a shitload of people outside like always. And as you expected, the McDonalds closest to the station was open. You wandered towards the place, trying to slip through the crowds like anyone else, and then, there you saw it, right before you crossed the road. A middle-aged man with a suitcase and a circle over his head on the other side.

His eyes met yours. Was he going to fight you, here? The man looked away, and then continued walking off, missing the chance to cross the street, getting away. Carefully, you cross, always trying to keep him in your sight, and then you try to slip away to the McDonalds.

Relief flushes over your face as you enter the bright establishment. The familiar smell of plastic grease is soothing. Daichi was likely to be in here, somewhere. Short with glasses, right? You hoped his shift was on right now.

Carefully, you go and wait in line, always trying to make sure to be vigilant. Then, you saw it. A young guy behind the counter, serving burgers. Short. With glasses. Red armor glowing over his body. Bingo. He was distracted with his job, but once there were just three people left, you could tell that he noticed you. He looked more tense. He was stuttering sometimes as he spoke to the clients, and gave you glances now and then.

You tried to seem friendly and rose a hand, greeting him, raising a meek hand just up to shoulder level and you tried to smile - and then, as you got closer, you saw it. There was a red mine stuck to the front end of the counter. A somewhat flat, round thing. Nearly translucent, like your sword and armor. Nobody else seemed to notice it.

The person in front of you then left, and it was now your turn in the queue. And you had to put yourself next to the mine. Daichi then waited for you, and stood behind the counter, and he looked at you with a nervous smile.

“Please, next.” he requested, facing the large void between you and him.

“I need to tell you something.” you then told him, and glanced at the mine ahead.

“Please, come closer sir.” he insisted.

Shit.

“Another friend red dot friend is coming, just a heads up.” you tell him quickly, and then remove yourself from the queue, and leave, and you could feel the stares of the curious Japanese drilling holes into you as you march out.

You stand outside of the McDonalds, and you check your phone. Catspice had sent you a reply.

CATSPICE: hey jesusyeezys. wanna get ahead of the game?

A pun, huh.

JESUSYEEZYS: Yeah. I guess you know what I’m messaging you about then.

She replied immediately. She must be online. You look around, before getting back to messaging her.

CATSPICE: yup

JESUSYEEZYS: Why are you promoting yourself as a player?

CATSPICE: :3

CATSPICE: im looking for people to team up with. there are no rules against that right?

CATSPICE: im so glad to have found you.

JESUSYEEZYS: Thanks.

CATSPICE: who are you by the way?

JESUSYEEZYS: Just some guy. Like most of your followers.

CATSPICE: nice nice

CATSPICE: well uh. if you want to trade info or something im here for ya and stuff alright?

CATSPICE: you know who i am obv but i really want to know who you are, if you want.

Then, you saw Daichi suddenly exit the McDonalds with a bag of trash, and you flinched back and tried to set distance between you two, but he raised his hand.

“Take it easy man.” he told you, and then extended a napkin to you. “Here, take my number.”

You grabbed it and stuffed it into your pocket.

“Are they like, going to come now?” he asked.

“I don’t know. You’re just a target right now for a group of them on a darknet board. They know your name, that you have armor and mines. That you work here.”

“Thanks.” he replied, and looked to the crowds of Shibuya. “I figured something like this might happen.”

“Those mines are pretty neat.” you then asked. “You’re just staying here with them around, aren’t you?”

“Pretty much.” Daichi replied and tossed the trash into a container nearby. “You take care now, OK? I have to get back to work. I’ll be in touch. You seem like a cool guy.”

“Same. No problem.” you tell him back.

You get to the station to get home and you find a few more messages from Catspice:

CATSPICE: hellooou you there?

You rubbed your thumb into your fingers. What should you write? Just… Something casual. Normal, right? Normal. Yeah, normal.

JESUSYEEZYS: Yeah

JESUSYEEZYS: I had to deal with something in real life. I’m outside.

CATSPICE: aye ok

You then got to the station, and on the way home, you continued to chat with her.

JESUSYEEZYS: What did you pick as a first item? What items do you have?

CATSPICE: want to know what i’ve got to hunt me down? :3

The train soon arrived, and you got onto a seat, and returned to your phone. You rubbed your forehead. What should you write? Should you open up to her? Tell her the truth? A selfie, even? You wiped your face with your hand. Fucking hell, you were getting nervous. Maybe you should just think of her as another player, another ally, instead of thinking about this deal with your penis.

The next morning was Monday. As usual, you only worked on the evenings, so the first half of the day was all yours. Normally, you’d go to the gym during this time, but perhaps you’d like to do something extra, or even just not go to gym today to do something else. You remembered to take your pill too, and you swallowed your daily dose of Daruzon.

We need to get a new phone number. I don't know. How do you get fake or spare phone numbers? Can we use an app or something so Daichi and anyone else can't figure out who we actually are? I'd like to do that. Then when we acquire a throw away number let's message him and recommend that if he wants to use mines while he's working, would he consider putting one inside the building right next to the entrance so he can remote detonate it before they can see it?

It was early morning, and while you had breakfast, you decided: Fuck it. You weren’t going to get anywhere with this if you kept on being a pussy. Besides, what did you have to lose? It wasn’t like someone like her, who was most definitely drowning in Chads, would be interested in someone like you. You went to the bathroom, washed your face a bit and checked your hair, and then you went to a plain white wall of your apartment and you took a photo of your face. Then you sent it to her.

JESUSYEEZYS: There you go. That’s me.

CATSPICE: cute!

JESUSYEEZYS: So, I picked a sword to start out with. What did you go with?

CATSPICE: :3

She didn’t reply further than that. Whatever. You tried. You got your gym clothing and stuff ready and stuffed into your backpack, and you went to the gym to do your usual Monday routine.

--------------------

After gym, you head back home. Still no reply. Was she ghosting you? Whatever. You had more things to do in your life than worry about unattainable Instagram thots. You got yourself dressed in business casual, and then took the road to the train station to get to the Easy Egg Eikaiwa.

You got a message from your boss too, as you walked there.

Nakamura: "Hello Alex. Something has happened to Chika. I'll explain when you arrive."

--------------------

It was while you were on your way to work on the crammed train that you finally got a reply from the boob monster.

CATSPICE: so my situation is a bit weird lmao. i'm "playing" the headgame but -

You didn’t finish reading, because you suddenly heard a gunshot coming from the right side of the wagon, then a sound effect of it being caught into something soft at the same time - but nobody flinched, except you. Your grip tightened onto the upper bars as you stood and tried to look around. It was too crowded to figure out who had just shot in here. Then, you see a faint trail of red smoke rising from a spot further down, and as you crane your head, you notice a middle-aged woman with a smoking bright red gun in her hand further ahead, sitting on one of the seats, locked in place by all of the people in front of her - for now, at least. She wasn’t looking at you, and was pretending to scratch her chin as the gun continued in that same hand’s grip. You could see that she had a red orb over her head too.

Shit. Another player.

You try to move to the back of the train to see how she reacts, but as you shift through the people, she gets up and off her seat, and raises a hand to the support bars, with her armed hand.

BANG

“AAah!-fffssh….” you emit. Immediately, you felt a searing pain on top of your head, but you gritted your teeth and managed to endure. You opened your eyes again to try to see where she was, but you couldn’t

see anything.

<system> alex.miller.blind 3600 seconds

That black-on red information box appeared. 3600 seconds of blind? You weren’t dead? Or maybe you already were and this was how it was like. But you could still hear people around you, in the train.

“Ah yuu aruraito?” you hear someone ask you in broken English. It was a man’s voice.

“I’m fine, thanks.” you reply in perfect Japanese, and stoically try to stay put and pretend you weren’t fucking blind right now.

“Oh, your Japanese is very good!” you then hear him reply in Nihongo, in a hushed tone. Trains were often dead silent, and now this fuck was revealing your position by talking to you.

You turn your head to a side. This was a horrible time for a conversation.

BANG

Your head got hit again from a high angle, you got too distracted by being blind and trying to pretend that nothing was going on to duck.

“hhhhhHSSSSHH….” you blow through your teeth, gripping as hard as you could to the bars to stay standing.

“...Du yuu need hospitaru?” the man then asked with honest concern. “Ai kan herupu.”

“Thanks, I’m alright, don’t worry.” you reply, again in perfect Japanese. “Toothache.”

<system> alex.miller.blind 3600 seconds appeared, again.

click click click

There was more insisting from the gun in your direction, but no more shots. Just empty metallic clicking.

You just stood there, holding, blind. You could count the stations and know which one you were at by feeling how the train stopped and resumed, but you couldn’t fucking see anything. Thankfully, you weren’t dead, though. And the pain in your head was slowly going away.

You waited, and waited, on the train. Blind. Eventually, the blackness subsided, and you managed to see again, and by counting the stations, you knew where you were. Immediately, you got off, and took trains to get to the Easy Egg. And as you rode, you continued to read your messages from the e-thot, finally finishing to read her texts:

CATSPICE: so my situation is a bit weird lmao. im "playing" the headgame but im not a player.

JESUSYEEZYS: So you’re going to pop the pill at the last moment, then?

CATSPICE: maybe. it depends on how the last moves in the game play out. it needs planning.

JESUSYEEZYS: But you’d just have one item, the others will have shitloads of upgrades, how are you going to win like that?

CATSPICE: lmao you don’t need to be the strongest to win

“Hello... Alex.” Nakamura told you, once you got through the doors to the back office of the academy, staring into the table with her head resting on a bridge made by her hands. She glanced at you for a moment.

“Is everything alright with you?” she asked, and used a tissue to dab her eyes for a moment, removing the light amount of moisture still on them.

“...Yeah. It’s just.” you tell her. “It’s tragic. Horrible. How did it happen?”

“S-she got killed.” Nakamura replied, staring back into the table. “The police found that some kid killed her with a bat, and then killed himself. The kid was depressive, had problems at school. Just blew up and took out his frustration on her, is the police’s theory. They had no connection. C-Chika was at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“I… see.” you reply.

Nakamura then dabbed her eyes again. “Sorry for being unprofessional about this. I-I should find a replacement. But you’re invited to her funeral, this weekend. Here, please take this.”

She handed over a sealed black letter, with ‘Alex Miller’ written on top of it in white. You opened it, finding an invitation to a graveyard on Sunday.

Nakamura pulled out a box of cigarettes from her purse, fidgeted with it, and then opted to put it back into the purse. She sighed, heavily. “Alright. We can’t lose focus, here. I need you to plan out your lessons so that you give them alone, for now; because thankfully, your Japanese is impeccable. I just hope that the parents understand the situation. We’re not in the position to start to give out ...refunds.”

“Fuck, refunds.” she hissed to herself, holding her head in one hand.

Then she pulled out the cigarette pack again, and a lighter. “Do that, please. I’ll be back in a moment.”

---------------------

You spent the rest of the work hours studying the Japanese grammar and rules that you’d now have to deliver, until it was time to leave. Nakamura had spent most of the time on the phone, apologizing and negotiating with parents, and smoking. You haven’t seen her smoke ever, before. Until now.

Just say we're busy this today,

Seems like a trap. What's to stop her from roping in a guy that was nothing to live that is a massive simp. To just level up the simp with ton of updates from other *fans* than her popping the pill than he take the Thot's killing blow. Simp to the end even killing his own simp ass for the thot.

Research the pills (Daruzon) that our Doctor gave us. If it talks about people that took it also did suicide. Maybe we can find out how the drug came into the market
>>
>>4293130
yeah sure this. If we're gonna meet change the meeting location just before it's time so she can't prepare anything in advance
>>
>>4293130
We're already ducked. We gave her enough info to get us killed ez.

Now's not a good time in my life for that. Maybe another day. I don't know.

Go about the day until you get off work. Go home, reflect on your day, then browse the internet for more info. Actually get that burner phone and contact that wage slave we saved.

Wait a fucking second. Wait. Wwwwaaaaaiiiittttt. So how did she know that you're effectively immortal when you're not on the pill? Does she know how long it takes for the effects to wear off? Could our doctor intentionally be giving out the drugs and knows people will probably start killing each other? How deep does the rabbit hole go?
>>
>>4293207
I think the pill is permanent. But yeah, we should figure out how she knows so much about this in the first place.
>>
>>4293111

My fault, I have a habit of skimming.
>>
>>4293207
she's not immortal, she just can't be attacked by PSY.

A metal bat is still a metal bat. If anything she just placed herself in a prime Information Broker spot. And we just gave her a potential kill blow on ourselves for no reason.
>>
>>4293396
as a separate note, slipping her a pill would be a great way to wreck her if it came down to it.

Additionally, she knows about the red circles above the head. That's a pretty specific detail.

Once you get out of work you pop open your phone and reply to Catspice:

JESUSYEEZYS: Some other time. I’m busy right now.

CATSPICE: awww. when?

JESUSYEEZYS: I don’t know yet.

CATSPICE: can’t you make time for me? :3

JESUSYEEZYS: We will see how things go.

Once you were at your apartment, after buying a data SIM card and the cheapest phone for it you could find, you started to investigate Daruzon on the internet. On the clearnet you found a few research journals on the psychotropic chemicals that it used, the dangers of overdosing on it, and a few news about it recently becoming commercialized, but nothing that stood out as out of the ordinary to you. There were some articles about it falling in short demand after it becoming suddenly popular among professionals due to its negligible side effects, but not much else. Nothing about it causing even more depressive suicides.

So you went to the darknet, back to the Darumafag’s threads, and started to investigate more about it, finding a small advertisement among their usual complaining and doxxing:

ANON: I buy sealed bottles of Daruzon for 20k yens, I can filter out one Headgame pill from a bottle for 5k yens initial payment, 5k afterwards if I confirm a pill. Not all bottles guaranteed. Discord: 239209302309#2991
ANON: >>2398 how do know which pills have the Headgame and which not?
ANON: Trade secret.

You look more into the drug market of Japan, finding that it’s actually tightly controlled by the government, unlike the United States, because of how easy antidepressants can be abused. Plus, you were getting your drugs and psychiatric treatment from Japan’s national medical insurance system (because of your work permit), one of the few ways to access antidepressants legally in Japan.

---------------------

The next morning, you checked on the Darumafags to look more into the Daruzon situation, but you got to see the latest on the current thread as well.

ANON: I’m getting a lot of new players at Fresco Asakura Nursing Home.
ANON: Same here.
ANON: farming grandmas and grandpas for their starter items aren’t they
ANON: wow that’s a new kind of low
ANON: Yeah I thought the same too. Can anyone get in there to figure out who is doing it?
ANON: I can drop a ⅓ bomb on it.
ANON: They have to be experienced players if they came up with that, I don’t think just dropping a ⅓ is going to work. Besides you don’t have the range to blow up a whole building with that.
>>
ANON: Guys, we’re going to have to raid them before they get out of control. It’s a big building. It’s a lot of grannie farming.
ANON: We need to raid the place. Tonight at midnight at Ueno Station, and from there we move to the home. Who is with me?
ANON: You’re just going to bomb us, man.
ANON: If we don’t stop them we’re going to be fucked later by this Granny-Eater
ANON: They might even start getting upgrades that we don’t know about.
ANON: I’m in.
ANON: someone’s going to leave a shitload of mines there and you’re all going to be trolled and die.
ANON: This game is getting weirder and weirder every day
ANON: You should’ve seen how dumb it was in beta
ANON: I’m going to Ueno, bomb me if you want. Whoever I catch fucking around, dies. More upgrades for me.

See if we can collaborate with Daichi on this new development. Tell him to do bring clothes to hide himself and a mask. We will do likewise.
Go back to the thread related to Daichi and see if any anons commented or spotted us. It would be bad if they got a picture.

I know the gun laws are super tight in japan, but can we purchase a taser gun and pepper spray? Oh we should also tell him to get disposable gloves.

Theres the possibility that the nurse(s) there are in on the game, and intentionally drugging the elderly. Doing so might give them the heads up to take out the anon group.

Can we also get a collapsible baton from some small thrift store? One that probably just deal in cash? Same with the pepper spray and stun gun. Perhaps we prevent additional chances for murders to be traced back to us by "hiring" a hobo to get things for us. We go into a low tech recording store to cost the place and products. If they have a good number of each of the things we need we'll put on a disguise and hire a hobo to get all the things we need. We give them the cash, and they buy what we need plus they get to keep the change. In addition we would keep some of their most valuable stuff as collateral should they try to buy booze.

tl;dr
Leg work on a sports store.
Put on disguise and hire hobo to get things.
Get collateral from hobo so they can't just run away with the money.
Items acquired: stun gun, pepper spray, collapsible baton.

If we're going to the nursing home, how much should we prepare? Escape routes? Exits and entrances? Satalite pctures? Sword practice? Trigger discipline?
If the sword just return to our hand, is there anything stopping us from utilizing it as a bladded missile by throwing it then recalling it?
Should we consider taking MMA and weapons lessons? Brass knuckles?

This, and sword practice

That will be all for thread #1! Thanks for participating, everyone, it's been great.

Seems like a fun quest, OP. Classic city-wide hidden-world death game. Will wait to see if a new thread pops up or not. Hopefully so. Even if the girls' bodies aren't to my taste - the setting itself and the character interactions so far have me intrigued.

>>4291011
Yeah, man, welcome to playing with anon. Where people switch back and forth from rampant, ranting, hivemind paranoia to pants-on-head retarded at the drop of a hat. Especially if its a woman involved.
Hopefully she either turns out to be reasonable, forget about us, or gets merc'd within the first couple threads so we don't have to deal with our extremely costly mistake.

>>4295394
Kansai dialect is a very fun one, was excited to see our peer using it. Always sounds so much more expressive than typical japanese to my ear. And she seemed like such a bro too. Would it have been possible to have kept her alive had we told her about our depression/medication, or was she doomed to die?

Is it because her chest wasn't fuckhueg enough to warrant survival?
