The place is Kelch, a port city of the peninsula kingdom of Thule. You are a freshly graduated official of the inquisition, a most honorably organization and were sent to the local chapter to begin your service. Right at your first day in the city apprehend and imprison an unruly elve who tried to instigate a mob to make a riot and coax an elf girl named Dalua from said mob to your side, making her your assistant. The next day you capture a heretic (also an elf) who prayed to a dark god in public and imprison him too. After that, you interrogated your first prisoner by yourself and went to the torture chamber, where the head torturer will give you his help with the dark god worshipping heretic.

WARNING: I've mainly made a new part because from here on out it will get quite graphic, so please don't read this quest if you can't handle a bit of gore.

"Please Brother Elrick, show us how it's done."
"Very well, follow me please," he answers while gesturing for you to enter the torture chamber. Upon entering you see a wide hall with multiple gruesome apparatus scattered around and iron chains hanging from the ceiling. In the midst of the room lays your prisoner on a wooden table board with his limbs bound and his mouth gagged with a piece of cloth.

He looks at you with eyes full of hatred as the headtorturer removes his gag. He scoffs at you arrogantly after uttering a single word:"Fools!"

"Oho, seems like this one is quite confident. What do you make of it, Brother Elrick."
"No worries Brother, the first step is always the hardest." He says in his characteristic kind-old-man voice as he brings out a pair of pliers from beneath his robe. "Now ask away, Brother."

You comply. "Why did you pray to the spider harlot in public, fiend?"
The elf tries to spit in your face but fails as he is bound while lying down. The spit falls next to his face.

Brother Elrick shakes his head with a regretful face, leads the pliers to his right hand and rips out the first nail. The heretic grimaces and presses his teeth together but keeps silent.
After doing so he rips out nail after nail until blood starts flowing out of all five fingers of the elfs right hand.
"This pointless Brother Barbarossa, if he doesn't talk after five nails he won't talk any more after ten. Let's try something else..."
>>

Suddenly Dalua says "Esteemed head torturer why don't we use some of the bigger instruments over there" pointing at some of the more gruesome-looking apparatuses in the room "Anu knows he's earned it!"
"Now don't be to hasty girl, I'm not saying these are just for show but sometimes small even tools can have the greatest of effects."
He takes out a single silver tea-spoon. Baffled the heretic elf cackles and seems to intend making a sarcastic comment.
His laughter turns into an horrified scream as headtorturer Elrick rams the spoon into the side of his left eye. With a single lifting motion he heaves the eyeball out of his socket, holding it on the spoon like a cooked egg.
"Now Brother Barbarossa would you please get the nail-clipping-scissors that are on the table over there. Yes, exactly these." He turns to the heretic "Regardless of my personal opinion on your crimes it's my pleasure to inform you that additionally to being the headtorturer of this honorable chapter I'm also fairly proficiant in healing magic. I can restore your fingernails as well as reinsert your eye and heal you as if nothing happened. If however Brother Barbarossa here, decides to cut through your optic nerve... well, additionally to that being an extremely painful process, restoring your sight after that would exceed my capabilities."

The elf shivers in horror and starts thinking rapidly on his next move.
You ask your question again, while holding the scissors near his tensed optic nerve. He still hesitates seemingly to shocked to think clearly...

"Why did you pray to a dark god in public?" you ask him again with a soothing calm voice. The heretic begins sweating profusely, while a whitey liquid starts dripping out of his empty eye-hole. You take out a handkerchief from your pocket and wipe it off his face with one hand while bringing the scissors nearer to his optic nerve with the other. "Come now, you don't want it to hurt right? You don't want to make it harder for Brother Elrick do you? I don't think we have another spoon here right now, so before we get on to digging out your other eye...I.Will.Have.To.Make.A.Cut."

The heretic elf begins to sob. "Nononono put it back, I'll tell you whatever you want to know just PUT IT BACK."
"Then answer my question."
"I'm NOT a worshipper of the big Spider I'm not. Not really. The statue that you destroyed doesn't even belong to me. It was given to me a week ago."
"Why?"
"Heal me please..?"
You put stretch out your middle finger and poke him square into his socket.
"Why?"
"AHHHHHH IT BURNS. GIVE BACK MY EYE! IT SCRATCHES MY SOCKET. IT BUUURNS."
"Why?"
"HE TOLD ME TO. A MAN. I WAS HOMELESS. WITHOUT SHELTER. THE REFUGEES WOULDN'T TAKE ME. HE GAVE ME MONEY. A CHANCE."
You retrieve the scissors for now. "Reinsert it, but don't heal him just yet.." you tell Brother Elrick. "Tell me, who was this man."
The elf sniffles, still crying from the pain. "A soldier. He told me that he serves under a powerful noble in this city. A knight."
You curse inwardly. That confirms it. Harvey Rilt is instigating uprisings amongst the refugees for some reason. But why?
"Tell me everything else you know. Then we'll heal you."

He tells you that the soldier gave him the location of the statue which was hidden under some rubble in a dark alley of the slums and told him to pray to it in a public place every day. He knew of the high risks that would ensue if he was caught but didn't care about any consequences at the time. Well, he does now.

"We are done here, heal him Brother. We'll need him to stay healthy until he testifies."
"Very Well Brother Barbarossa."
After healing your pathetic prisoner, Elrick leads him to a cell and chains him up.
"Now good Brother, care to explain what this fellow meant, regarding that influential knight?"
Damn, the old man caught on quicker than you guessed. You need to convince him to leave this matter to you and to keep silent about it.
"Brother Elrick I..."
"Sax no more Brother Barbarossa, I see that you have secrets you intend to keep. That is fine, completely fine. But you see I'm old, I like talking and in my age, one needs a physical reminder to keep being tightlipped."
"What do you want?"
"As I've already mentioned I'm in need of an apprentice. There aren't many who are willing to learn my profession and even less who are suitable to exert it. Let your assistant become my apprentice. Elves are almost always very suited for the magics of healing arts and just a moment ago I sensed that she was more than willing to help out with the interrogation no? I'll teach her my doctrine to my best efforts until she's qualified to take the torturers exam in the main quarters. After she's passed it and make no mistake, with my teachings she will you can take her back as your assistant."

That sleek old man. He's probably planned this from the moment he heard the elf mention the knight. Anyway there are many ways this could end. On the one hand Dalua would probably be safe with Brother Elrick if he's actually intent on teaching her, on the other hand if betrays you things could take a disastrous ending. But the main problem is that he already knows about the knight. He surely has connections in the city and if he really tried he could probably inform himself about all the matters you know of now in one or two days. You can't very well just kill him, the head torturer, can you? What to do, what to do?

>"Very well if Dalua agrees and you promise to protect her we have a deal."
>I'm afraid I can't do that. I need my assistant for now.

"Very well if Dalua agrees and you promise to protect her we have a deal."
You discuss the matter with Dalua and she readily agrees to the "unique" opportunity to learn a new craft. After finalizing the deal with Brother Elrick and reassuring yourself that he'd keep his promise to keep your assistant safe you leave her with him and leave the tower dungeon.

Now you need to proceed with the investigation of this conspiracy. First of all, you recruit two apprentices from the regular quarters as your temporary assistants, then you leave them be until the next day and dine in the cafeteria before returning to your room. Before you go to bed, you start thinking about your next steps tomorrow. The most important thing is acquiring more information about Sir. Harvey's plans...

>go to the blackmarket near the slums. Shady individuals have taken shop there but that may be exactly the kind of men that could help you now.
>introduce yourself to Sir. Harvey, maybe if you send note that you want to meet him he'll invite you to a meal or something like that. You are after all one of the few official Inquisitors in the city.
>Go the city-guards main quarters. The guards as well as some of the soldiers that don't serve at the duke's residence at the moment are stationed there. Maybe you'll find clues about the guard that enticed the heretic elf to pray to the dark god.

You decide that you'll go to the city-guards main quarters early in the morning. The guards as well as some of the soldiers that don't serve at the duke's residence at the moment are stationed there. Maybe you'll find clues about the guard that enticed the heretic elf to pray to the dark god.

After going to bed, you get yourself a few hours of sleep. You wake up with the sunrise and are on your way to the guard-quarters after eating a quick breakfast. The city is a bit quieter today, probably because it's a Sunday and most markets and shops are closed (as is the custom). That fits well with your current objective as fewer guards will be posted in the city, which means that more guards than usual will be in the guard quarters. Those with their own housing and family will be at home of course but they are the minority and if you need to speak to a particular guard you can always ask for their address.

Finally, while thinking about these mattery, you arrive before the guard quarters. Looking like a small castle it's about double the size of the inquisition chapter and while having a similarly quadrilateral form, possesing four small towers at each corner. You enter the gate after giving a nod to the guards who immidiately let you through after seeing your red embleme. Upon entering you see dozens of guards and even a few soldiers strolling around the complex.

thank you anon, I'm sure it'll work out fine.

You decide to speak to some of the regular guards first. After walking over to a group of chatting guardsmen you say: "How's it going men. You look like it was a busy week."

"Aye Maestro Inquisitor, that it was, but you know that already. I've heard how you handled the troubles with the refugees and the heretic on the market, much respect for that." one of the guards commends you.

"Oh no, I'm the one who has to give his thanks to you. You guards helped with the arrest after all. But say is it normal that there are so many soldiers around the guard quarters? Why aren't they at the duke's castle?"

"Oh yeah, these guys." the guards scoffs. "They are staying here more often than usual int the last few weeks. Pampered fellows, they eat and drink here but are too fine and good for working or patrolling the streets!"

"Really? What ARE they doing around here then?" you sternly ask.
"Uhm, I'm not really sure if I'm qualified to..."
"Come on now. It's not like they are committing any misdeeds. And if their actions were actually unlawful you would tell me, right? I'm sorry, what am I asking you, of course, you would tell you know who I am after all."

The guard suddenly begins sweating profusely and babbles:
"Of course I would tell you, Maestro! We all would, after all it's our duty as guards of this town to cooperate with the honorable Inquisition in any way that is required. We would never insult you like so!

The soldiers are really just here to observe the state of the town and to consult about some legal matters with the higher ranking guards. I heard they were concerned about the latest tumults but if you ask me, you handled that perfectly well without their help Maestro Inquisitor."

So the soldiers were sent to check out the situation in the town's populations and facilites. This concerns you but for now you have to plan your next step very carefully...

"Is there anything else that's troubling you young man? Your face seems a bit too pale for a healthy strong lad like yourself."

The guard makes a sad grimmace at your comment.

"Ah, about that Maestro, the meals of us city guards got a bit of a worse quality right now. Barely any vegetables in the soup, only scraps of the good beef and the beer is more water than anything else. It's because we've got to share our things with the soldiers for now... or more like, the good stuff is reserved for them." he grunts unhappily.

"Why, that's terrible. You guys are the protectors of the city, it's rearguard, should catastrophe befall us. This just ain't sitting right with me. Here take these and invite the other boys to some hearty meals and drinks in the city."

You take out a handful of silver coins from your pocket and give it to the guard.

"I can't accept this maestro, that's enough for all of us to lunch until the end of the month!" the stunned guard protests.

"Nonsense. If anything, give my thanks to everyone who helped me out this week. I'll have to count on your support for as long as I'm stationed here after all."

"Of course Maestro, I'll do that. Much thanks!"

"Haha, just call me Inquisitor Barbarossa. And another thing... keep an eye on these soldiers for me will ya. If these boys are really as lazy as you say I'll do something about it. Just send me a message if you observe any suspicious activity."

"Consider it done, Maestro Inquisitor Barbarossa!"

You walk to the main tower where the bureau of guard captain is located and ask a random guard to inform him of your arrival. You receive notice to enter his rooms shortly and proceed.

In the bureau a big man with an even bigger volume (THICC) greets you.

"Inquisitor, I welcome you in our humble quarters. I'm Largo Edelberg the guard captain of this city. What brings you here?"

"Samuel Barbarossa is the name. I just wanted to introduce myself since I'm newly stationed in the city. "

"How polite of you. Normally the officials of your organization seem to have a, let's say a rather dry demeanor. You seem to have a more pleasant personality, so that relieves me. I think we'll have a good future ahead of us if our organizations can collaborate together for the good of the city..."

You are intrigued.

"Oh? Do you think that you'll be in need of our help in the near future?"

Largo gives a mischievous smile and says: "I'm sure that you've noticed that increase in...turmoils in the city. I've heard from some reliable sources that these aren't going to end any time soon. In fact I..."

there he stops and takes a long look at you. He coughs then continues:
"Well let's just say that personally, I think that, Yes we'll be in need of the Inquisition's holy guidance in the coming time."

This doesn't bode well with you at all. Something big is going on here and the guard captain knows something.
