Your name is Scruffy. You are currently onboard a mercenary caravan called the Butcher Block traveling through the Primordial Sea. Since finding the king’s runaway daughter deep in the wilds of the frontier, your caravan has endeavored to return her to her noble estate and take in the million gold bounty. While on your outing to the nearest royal presence, you ran into another collapsed motor carriage where a knight asked for gas to clear out to a faraway town. You determined that the knight was carrying a crew of heisters with a bounty on their heads. After bargaining, you momentarily recruited them to offer aid in bringing the princess home.

During your off time, you asked the normally obnoxious princess to help you learn to read and made some steps toward learning thanks to her, who was a surprisingly patient teacher. However, while continuing your journey, you ran into yet another roadblock: another mercenary caravan by the name of The Royal. They stopped you and asked for aid after an unfortunate run-in with some bandits. Despite your best efforts to hide the princess and the thieves, it couldn’t stop one orc from trying to sniff her out - but you managed to scare her off with the help of her companion who was willing to overlook your bounty. Since then, you’ve been traveling non-stop to reach Kirin.

You awaken in the night. It’s late. Galia is sleeping next to you on your cot. Ana let the caravan know that she’d be travelling in the night and expected to arrive at your destination by tomorrow morning. Despite your million gold bounty finally getting secured, you can’t help but feel something strange in your gut knowing that this’ll be over soon.

It’s pretty hard to sleep right now.

You wait a moment to listen. Save for the the familiar creak of the caravan as it rolls through the dark sea outside, you suppose no one else is awake. You decide to try to rid yourself of your gut feeling by getting a snack, riding the rungs leading down into the main carriage and the pantry.
As per usual, Ana sits still at Magnus’ like a mountain of white plate metal. The darkened opening of the carriage frames Ana’s armored figure well, and Magnus seems to be holding up rather well despite all the travelling. She glances over her shoulder as you creep down tiredly.

“Evening.” She mutters stoically. “Happy to almost be done with all this, right?”

Something just feels off... We never got galia to tell us why she left in the first place, We have just been assuming she wanted to go on an adventure. Same with we have been assuming she will pardon the bank robbers. It seems the past few days we have been assuming everything, and banking on it'll work. It just feels off

You move to the pantry as she speaks, finding a can of salt pork tucked away. Nice..

"That depends on what everyone else is gonna do afterwards. If we disband to retire I might try going back to adventuring or doing merc work. If we don't, might get magic armor and a nicer home for my dad." You think on it, releasing the lid on the can of salt pork. "To tell the truth, I'm not sure or not whether to retire. I couldn't imagine just.. sitting around. And admittedly, I'd miss this heap of shit caravan." She murmurs. "How's life at home? Y'know. Not in the sea." You figure you might as well strike up a conversation while you eat as you begin to dig into your salt pork with your bare hands.
"Curna is.. nice. I grew up there." Ana lets down her guard a bit as she recollects. "Always hot and sunny. The sea is like glass, green and blue and pearlescent. The buildings are lots of white bricks and dust. The fisheries and wet markets bleed their catch dry and run the streets red weekly. It's a big center for trade and scents run the gamut from dwarven to elven to lizard spices. A little more dangerous than the capital, but lively."
"And.. your kids? How long has it been since you've seen them?" You ask. "Maybe you should go see them. A family travel trip before they go back to your mom."

You come upstairs with your can of half finished pork, climbing the rungs with a relaxed looseness. You feel far more sleepy now with a gut full of salt. You yawn silently as you approach the door - the familiar creaking of the caravan seems to have quieted down. You open the door and your shadow catches the light as you glimpse a moving figure in the dark - a tall figure wrapped in black looming just by the princess, a sack mantled along his shoulders. It's certainly no one from the convoy.

>Miyuki?

"Miyuk-.." You attempt, but no words come out. They're hushed as they spill from your mouth. The door behind you closes and you're engulfed in darkness.

You feel a sudden metallic blunt force on your back that narrowly misses your head - causing you to tumble forward, your fingers scraping against the splintered wood of the floor. You move for the blanket, but you're both deaf and blind at the moment - you feel another strong kick to your gut that nearly causes you to spew your pork.

>GUN
>shoot at the eye,
>try to wake Galia. bump the bed/grab after her/fall onto her. half elves have darkvision (at least in d&d).

You fumble for your flintlock, pulling it from your holster and firing. The bullet unloads silently, leaving a smoking hole that leaks moonlight into the room. It seems you hit one as one cloaked figure slumps onto the ground.
You swing around just in time to get shivved in the arm. The dagger hangs out from your forearm as you stumble back, grabbing at the bed and falling atop the princess. She awakens to a faceful of blood - the two of you tumble out into a chaotic tangled mess on the ground.

Given the moonlight from the hole you made in the wall, you can make out a tall and black-wrapped figure moving fluidly in the dark, a handful of daggers hanging loosely from its hands. The princess appears to be panicking, making it difficult for you to move under her flailing weight.

>throw the gun and whip out whatever weapon we have on hand. Besides the knife. I don't know about the sword but I guess that would leave the cursed vorpal dagger?

Quickly dragging yourself out from under the princess, you whip the gun at your assailant's head, who narrowly dodges it, and take that time to unhook your vorpal dagger from your belt. The bandit seems to recognize it, initially shrinking from the blade before tucking one of his daggers into his fingers and taking aim. You move to stab him, throwing the blanket up as a distraction and going low with the blade out. You tackle him into the bullethole you just fired into the side of the convoy.
You hear nothing as the choppy wood of the wall gives way and you both go tumbling down the side of the block. For a moment, time freezes as you both go tumbling off in a mess of cloth and blades. The princess, caught up in the action, jumps as if to save you before realizing her predicament as the three of you come tumbling off the side of the caravan and hit the ground with an unsatisfying crunch.

[...]

You wake up in a haze of heat and wind, your eyes closed. The gentle rustle of the sea's tall grass prickles at your ears and fingers. You feel damp.

You try to get up, opening your eyes with a steady apprehension. It's bright out, and particularly hot, too. Looking around, you see nothing but the unending, rolling plains. The cart is no where to be seen. The dagger's still stuck in your upper arm.
"Oh, thank the gods. I thought you died." You hear a familiar and relieved voice - the princess is rubbing at her head behind you, still in her nightgown. "Th.. the caravan's gone. I think it's been a few hours already now.."

"Galia, any chance you've been attacked by assassins before?" You look to the princess.
"Obviously. I'm the princess." She snorts. "How did they find out I was with you if they're assassins, though..?"
"Do you remember anything from when your carriage got attacked? Like did everything go quiet back then too? Goblins are noisy." You think back. "Someone was throwing daggers back then too. Sigrid helped ask.. Curly some questions, but she was too fixated on saving you to give details."
"Curly? Who the hell is Curly? Do you mean Curnow?" Miyuki scowls, a flash of annoyance crossing her features. "And.. no. I think it was.. loud. With a lot of screeching."

>Check for any more injuries. The princess looks largely unharmed but she should had stuck with the caravan.
>Tear up the blanket, pull out the danger, and use the blanket as a bandage. It's not idea but it'll work for now.

You first check yourself for injuries - removing your straw cloak and shirt to the princess' ire, you find that it's mostly just bruising along your arm and side coupled with the dagger wound. You take a sharp breath, bite your tongue, and pull the dagger from your arm. Fresh blood begins to leak before you quickly stifle it with your shitty cloth blanket.

You tear a strip from it and wrap it around your arm. It'll work, but you probably shouldn't be exacerbating it.

>confirm the bad guy is really gone. they're here for Galia, it's weird that they'd disappear without her.
>try to ascertain what way the cart was going:

You examine your surroundings. Losing your bearings in the Primordial Sea is a surefire way to getting yourself killed, so any sort of landmark to orient yourself around is ideal. Luckily, given that it was so recent, the carriage trail in the grass is still visible. You'll be able to follow it to keep up with them - and if they've reached Kirin, it'll likely be a 10 or 12 hour walk. No telling how dangerous it'll actually be, though.

You also find your assailant nearby. Thin, wispy waves of white hair hang from a dark hood. A dark elf bandit, presumably. She's still breathing.

>"sorry about the Curly thing. changeling check. you passed."

Staring down at the unconscious delf, you raise one boot and stomp on her leg until it gives way to a gross angle. Galia looks disgusted. "Wh-.. what the hell are you doing?!" She asks, her lip curling.
"Making sure she can't get away." You bend down, ridding the elf of her cloak and the sacks attached to her hip. "Sorry about the Curly thing. Changeling check. You passed."

After robbing the bandit blind, you find many of your own belongings - that nice boot you found a few days ago, about 50 gold that you stashed away in your bed, and about 12 daggers. You give the cloak to Galia to mask her elven features, but it's nothing particularly substantial and certainly nothing in the way of food or water. She remains unconscious throughout the ordeal.

By the time you're done, the dark elf comes to, a thin, low groan escaping from her lips. "Wh-.." She moans in pain. "Ugh. Mercenaries.."

"Hello, bitch boy. I'll make this quick. Tell me everything or I'll draw out what I want from you painfully. You don't die instantly if I spill your guts everywhere." You hiss, pulling your sword from its holster.
"Scruffy..!" Galia exclaims from behind you. "What is WRONG with you? D-don't do that!"
"Scruffy? Your name is Scruffy?" The dark elf sneers, a pained giggle escaping her lips. "Scruffy and the princess. Right."

"Who are you and how did you get into the caravan?" You place the sword against her throat. "And why did you try stealing from us?"
"Some nobody bandit. Every caravan that area gets raided." She mutters, edging her head away from the blade. "Maybe the question you should be asking is why the giant lumbering creaking pile of planks covered in red flags hasn't been stolen from already."
"How many of you are left, and who's in your group?" You keep it pointed at her. "Who was that person in the room we killed?"
"There's about 6 bandits in the crew. Can't be fucked to remember all their names. They were all in that little convoy of yours." She responds easily. "You killed some human named.. ah. Don't remember. Sh-shit." She rubs at her broken leg, her face twisting in pain. "Why'd you have to break it..?"
"You'd have picked another room to rob if you didn't know what you were after. I'm betting you guys know Kristine?"
"Kristine?" She raises a brow. "No, I'm not familiar with Kristine. And you think I'm after the princess? I'm not exactly some world-dominating lich overlord. If we tried holding her for ransom, the king would roll in with the entire fucking army and smoke us in public."

I dont know what other questions anons have for her, but I think a good fracture to the ribs and a couple purple bruises to her body should be enough before we knock her out. Maybe break her index finger and thumb in her right hand as a good measure. You cant be a good rogue bandit with a broken hand.

They're bandits Galia. If not for me they'd ACTUALLY ransom you for money. Some bandit groups vary in their rules of conduct if they use any at all, but typically they'll just murder you and take you stuff. I'm not one for stereo types cuz my dad's an elf, but she's fitting the dark elf stereo type too well and I cant be bother to sympathize with her. At least this way unless she can afford a doctor, she'll either end up a dead bandit, or some menial in a city. Would you prefer I kill her right now so she cant hurt anyone else in the future?

thought:
they could use a respectable intermediary and get a cut. bandits catch the princess, make a deal with mercs to leave their camp without a fight in exchange for a lot of money. mercs "rescue" the princess by "driving off" the bandits, get the bounty.
not saying that's likely if they're just six though. mercs could just drive them off normally.

"Do you think you'll live with your leg? Doesn't seem to be much loyalty in your crew if you don't know each other's names, and we're not helping move you." You remove your vorpal dagger from your belt. It hums ominously and feels warm in your hands, the thin red aura trailing off of it giving off a faint red light. "Seems like you recognized this enchantment. Should be a painless way to die if you want to."
"Believe me, mercenary, I'd rather not die." She squirms noticeably at the sight of the dagger, moving herself away.
"Scruffy! Don't KILL her!" Galia protests.
"If she cared more about not killing people than about loot, she'd have run before we could get up off the floor." You glance over your shoulder to the princess. "What about Claire? Didn't you come swinging with that sword?"
"I didn't WANT to kill Claire. Just, maybe.. disarm her." Galia seems uncomfortable, taking a few steps back. "Can't you just.. leave her here..?"

Wait I think she'd sting something. Kick her injured leg. As long as we keep this dialogue going and not killing/knocking her out, I dont want to chance her trying some nasty trick.

Bunch of edgelords in here all of a sudden, what the hell.

I don't buy the bandit bullshit. Common bandits have some kind of magic to mask sound, attacking a mercenary cart and going directly to the Princess' room, more worried about killing people than fleeing with their lives?

She's talking a load of bullshit, imo.

Agreeing with this, quest isn't dark enough to warrant killing non-gobs.
We already stripped her of supplies, and there's no way we're heartless enough to leave her stranded with nothing. Let's hoist her and go after the caravan.

she has no indication we're willing to help her, but she still would rather stay here than die, so I think she thinks she'll be ok. her crew is probably nearby.
I'd have preferred not breaking her leg in the first place (maybe an arm to dissuade her from fighting), but we're not going to carry someone we don't like for more than 12 hours.

"I don't buy it." You keep the blade angled at her. "Common bandits have some kind of magic to mask sound? Attacking a mercenary cart and going directly to the Princess' room? More worried about killing people than fleeing with their lives?"
"Believe it, merc." The dark elf scoffs. "There were thieves in other rooms as well. Hush magic is tough, not uncommon."

".. Alright." Scouting the area for wood hunks left after the stumble, you find a sizeable segment that should work well as a splint. You holster it to her leg with a strip of the blanket. "You're on your own now."
".. Thank you." The dark elf mutters under her breath.

With the princess in tow, you begin the long journey back to the convoy, watching the fallen dark elf disappear over the horizon behind you.
"Thanks for not.. killing her." Galia suddenly speaks out behind you. "Even if it doesn't make sense. It doesn't really feel right.."
"Mmm." You respond absentmindedly.

[...]

It seems the bandit hasn't followed you. You've been traveling for maybe 4 or 5 hours now - just an endless trudge through grass with nothing around for miles. The heat is killing you. The Flower Quarter can make the Primordial Sea a nightmare some days. You grew up here and you're already thoroughly soaked through with sweat. The princess behind you seems to be in an even worse state - her face is flushed and she's breathing quickly, her head lolling from side to side as you walk.

"Can we.. can we stop? Just for a moment?" She asks, gulping a gasp of air. "I don't feel so good.."
"Me neither." You mutter, wiping a wave of soaked blonde hair from off your forehead.
"H-hey. There..! Do you see that..?" She looks out to the distance. You see a small outcropping of roofs - a few fancy stone and brick cottages just over the horizon. "Is that Kirin..?!"
"No. Too close." You respond. "Just another town."
"Think we can stop for supplies? For just a bit? I think I'm gonna pass out." Galia asks in a ragged voice, her face notably pinker than usual.

The two of you enter the town - Galia helps you read a sign that denotes it as Culley. Luckily, it's early enough in the morning that there aren't too many passerby, and those that are out and about pay the both of you no mind. The roads are cobbled and the buildings are solidly structured, a far cry from the distant slipshod towns deep in the sea, so you're definitely getting closer to civilization. It even has it's own-
"Scruffy! An adventurer's guild!" The princess's eyes light up as she points at the structure, a tall, noble looking building with a few small parties milling about the outside. "Let's go there for supplies."
An adventuring guild likely would provide free water and have some good supplies for the trip, but you'd run the risk of the princess being recognized. It's guaranteed that there's a bounty poster up for her in that very building. A store might be a little harder on your wallet, but the princess isn't likely to be recognized. And she seems to really want to enter the guild.

>Enter the guild.
>Go to a store.
>Write-In.
>>
>>4292230
Ask her when all of this is said and done, would she still want to go adventuring?

I have a middle ground we can settle on. we'll buy you a mask or at least a face mask of sorts from the general store to hide your identity better, then we can go to the Adventurer's Guild for some free suplies. I think Scruffy's old rank (depending on how long and far he's gone as an adventurer before joining the mercs) should afford him enough clout for some additions amenities.

Once we're inside we can pick a table and point people out Breakfast clod style. Who's are the backstabbers that'll kill you and take the rewards, the murderhobos, the chaotic neutrals, etc. We aught to point out the less then likable figures. Especially the pretty ones. The pretty and handsome ones are always (at least most of the time) the most cunning and distrustful due to their charismatic natures.

You find a small shop tucked away in a sleepy little corner of the town - perfect for your needs. The owner, a small, thin man greets you as you enter - you approach his counter and slap the small cloth sack of gold pieces onto it. "Water." You breathe out raggedly.

[...]

After spending 5 coins on a good few gallons, you and the princess chug the jars right in the center of the shop. It seeps into your chest and the lightness in your head dissipates. Galia's face loses it's flush and her shoulders perk up. Once you're done, you still have four hefty jars left for the trip. Plenty, you're sure. The shop owner watches anxiously.

There's nothing wrong with buying mask. If anything, depending on the type of mask you'll be scene as weird or eccentric.

The fuck? A gun is expensive. normally if this was a nonmagical setting a book would typically be reserved for the noble and wealthy as commoners typically don't know how to read, nor can afford books, but this is a fantasy setting and fantasy cheats. besides, she already has a book to write in back in her trunk.

You barter with the nervous looking shopkeep for a few minutes. While another gun is well out of your price-range, it's about 10 GP for a small sack of shot, and another 5 GP for a good few cans of salted meat for the trip. >Bunny suit to go with our bunny ears.

You briefly consider purchasing the princess a bunny suit, but quickly shake the idea from your mind. She probably wouldn't go for it. Instead, you buy her a straw cloak and hat that fits the region far more than her fancy white gown and manage to haggle 11 of the dark elf's daggers over for a few tins of salted meat. That, coupled with the mule (which comes with a saddle,) costs you the rest of your cloth pouch.

The shopkeep leads you out to the back of the lot, where a few mules mill about in a small grass yard. You pick a HEALTHY looking one and lead it out of the fenced area, the now straw cloaked Galia accompanying you as you thank the shopkeep and leave.

>What do you do?
>>
>>4293289
Pet the HEALTHY mule. Its important to assert dominance via eye contact and to show that it's a good boy/girl. Find a stable brush it brush it with, check to see if got a chance to eat/drink before leaving the stable, then head on out and try to find your way to kirin at a gallops pace.

if it can carry both of us easily:
>ride at a human's speedwalk/jog pace.

if it can't:
>switch out rider and walker every 30-60 minutes.
will still save some time since the one walking will be well rested.
>we ride first.
so Galia's hair isn't super visible from a up high on the mule. also makes look like we're in charge and not treating her like a princess.
she's probably going to tire quicker than us anyways, so she'll be riding for a larger fraction of the journey than we will.

if it protests when we try to make it carry both of, it might still be useful to be able to get on its back if we need to outrun humanoid assailants.

>Pet the HEALTHY mule. Its important to assert dominance via eye contact and to show that it's a good boy/girl. Find a stable brush it brush it with, check to see if got a chance to eat/drink before leaving the stable, then head on out and try to find your way to kirin at a gallops pace.
>does it have a name?
>make sure Galia is comfortable with it and confirm if she can control it a bit.
>test whether can carry both of us easily, doesn't seem comfortable with doing that, or seems to have actual difficulty.
>switch out rider and walker every 30-60 minutes.

You pet the HEALTHY mule and ingratiate him to you. Although initially you want to name him, the princess whines about it enough that you let her settle on naming him "Peeky." You test his holding capacity - it seems like he can carry the supplies and one rider at a time, leaving just one to walk. Galia manages to get the hang of keeping a hold on him with a bit of difficulty, but she's not totally unfamiliar with handling riding animals. You settle on riding him first with the princess just next to him. Thanks to the disguise you purchased, you, Galia, and Peeky make it out of the town just fine at a slow and steady pace. You continue the journey out of Culley together.

[...]

You've been traveling for a few hours now. It's been a pleasant trip under the sun, which has thankfully cooled a little. Galia even forced you to practice a little along the way, showing you written words from her journal as you ride and forcing you to enunciate. You have a feeling you'll be catching up to the caravan any moment now. Galia shoots a look between you and the plains.
"Are you gonna miss this?" She asks suddenly. "When you get your coin and I get back to the capital. Who's gonna teach you to read?"

>What do you do?

It all depends on a lot of things. Should you have your father's blessing and still desire to adventure you could probably come with us. Better that then trying on your own again. That or I'll pay someone to tutor me. Maybe even see if Sigrid, Miyuki, or Ana can. Don't tell me you're gonna miss the manly and totally masculine Scruffy now.

>"I think I'll miss you, and anyone I've got to know who decides to quit."
>"and miss being on an adventure, once I go back to mercenary work."
>"won't miss either enough to go on an adventure together while you're still wanted and untrained, though. if that's where you're going with this."

"It all depends on a lot of things. Should you have your father's blessing and still desire to adventure you could probably come with us. Better that then trying on your own again." You admit with a shrug. "That or I'll pay someone to tutor me. Maybe even see if Sigrid, Miyuki, or Ana can. Don't tell me you're gonna miss the manly and totally masculine Scruffy now."
"Obviously not." She snorts. "There's a million other desperate illiterate mercs out here."

You continue your journey quietly until Galia comes to a sudden stop, placing a hand on Peeky. "Look." She whispers. You squint. A few dark figures mill about in the distance - your merc crew? No. Just some adventurers. Probably from Kirin. "What do you want to do?"

You're still following the wagon's trail.

>Letw take a look closer

You ride the mule in a bit closer. Definitely some adventurers - they tend to have a certain "look" about them. Maybe a bit younger than you. One is a smaller, bespectacled witch and the other is a taller looking boy wearing some light plate. They seem to catch sight of you, regarding you with a wave.

You wave back. "Hey. How's it going?" You ask, staying atop the mule. "Is this the way to Kirin? How far is it from here?"
"We're just out on a goblin quest." The bespectacled girl shrugs.
"And yeah. Kirin is only an hour or two out from here." The boy nods before turning his attention to Galia, squinting. "You look.. really familiar. I think I've seen you somewhere in Kirin, right?"

it's more likely to work than the other suggestions, and also potentially hilarious.

I looked up the name Galia, and it's from Star Wars and her mom is named Amanoa. Korobovinian is a nonsense word that appeared on a google translates MTG card that I've been wanting to use as a surname for someone.

They're free to come. More bodies between us and goblins, but if they so much as look at us funny we'll have a problem. If he's willing to do it for free then there shouldn't be any problem if they accompany us to return the princess to safety, unless they have ulterior motives.
If they deny allowing Scruffy to come they might come off as specious. If they agree then they're slightly less specious, but It would be better if they marched a head of us. I'm still worried about the 4 out of 6 remaining bandits back at the wagon.

"I'm a FORMER adventurer, thanks. I know the business, and I've lived in the Primordial Sea all my life. I'm not a complete amateur." You scowl, moving Peekay along as you push the adventurer aside with Galia. "I've been escorting her for days, and now you're trying to suck up to her right at the finish line. ".. Fine." The adventurer mutters. "Let's go, sis."

With that, the armored up adventurer and his little sister begin to walk - he shoots a glance over his shoulder at you before continuing along his path. Galia sighs. "Thanks."

After just a brief few minutes of traveling, however, you catch sight of a familiar, towering pile of planks - red and gold flags and banners hanging loosely from its side as Magnus pulls it along. Looks like they began to come back for you as well.

>"I'm exactly as worried for you people as you are for us. please let me down. is everyone alright?"

"I was worried too." You mutter under your breath, briefly returning her hug as she lets you down. "Is everyone alright?"

Ana leads you in as she explains what happened. After you fell out in the night, the bandits continued to stage their theft and unfortunately stole a hefty chunk of supplies from the convoy. They only just realized when they arrived at town and upon investigating your room found evidence of a struggle with the corpse of the bandit you killed. They just crossed their fingers that you'd been kidnapped and decided to trek back and look for clues and had only been traveling for a short time.

[...]

You spend the rest of the trip there conversing with the rest of the crew and eating a hefty breakfast with the princess - cheese, sausages, tinned meats - anything that was left after the raid. Luckily, the princess' sword managed to narrowly avoid detection, although her armor wasn't so lucky. For once, rather than getting your food hauled up to you in an elevator, you take the time to eat with the mercs down in the main convoy while Ana rides. It's a pleasant and peaceful ride out.

You catch sight of the heads of the marble brick and oak structures endemic to well-off towns over the horizon in the opening of the carriage. Galia peeks out from next to you.

"There it is. Kirin. Took long enough, right..?" She smiles.
"Y-yeah. B-been a while since I-I've been in a town like this." Miyuki whispers.
"Mmmm. Reminds me of the capital." Sigrid sighs with a smile.

[...]

The crew stands out by the outskirts - Ana standing at front, while you're flanked by Sigrid and Miyuki. Galia, Claire, Shibumi, and Grobbo stand behind you.

"Right-.." Ana begins. "We'll be dropping the princess off at the guard checkpoint. She'll be left in their custody and they'll take a cavalcade of motor carriages out to bring her back to capital, which should take about half an hour. They'll give us the option to stay in Kirin and await your payment after a short time or come to the capital with the princess briefly to take it now. What do you think..?"

Can we also have documents of pardoning given Claire, Shibumi, and Grobbo signed but the Kirin guard captain and the princess, in addition to returning the stolen money as a sign of good faith?

"...Honestly, I'd prefer to go to the capital now with Galia. Need to keep up with my lessons, y'know." You glance at the princess.
"That's what I figured." Ana nods, turning back to begin her walk into town. "I got a friend here who can keep an eye on the Butcher Block for a little while. We'll come with the motor cavalcade to the capital and get our reward deposited in a bank out there."
On the way there, you exchange a few quiet words with the princess. Galia quietly lets you know that she plans to stick to the truth - seems like she wants to let it be known that she got her guards killed.

Your sizeable group stroll down the cobbled town road triumphantly, drawing weird gazes from the passing villagers and adventurers. An odd mishmash of species and classes surrounding the princess. You approach the royal guard checkpoint - a tall, staunchly bleached brick building covered in azure banners and surrounded by armored guards. One knight approaches.
"State your business." The guard grimaces, keeping a healthy distance from the mass of mercenaries and thieves.
Wordlessly, you push the princess to the front of the group. "W-h.. h-.. th-.. the princess..?!"

[...]

After nearly getting speared right in front of the checkpoint and getting the arrangement of events sorted out, you manage to finagle a deal out with the guards, getting a pardon document signed as well as unloading most of the gold to be returned - some of which was stolen by the last bandit raid. By noon, you've got a motor carriage heading out of the Primordial Sea - the princess is set alone in one carriage loaded with guards while the mercenary crew is being driven in a separate one, the thieves tagging just behind.

".. and a new auger, and maybe one of those telescopic lenses, a silvergraph machine, some erythrid beetles to breed, lich material.." Sigrid lists her future purchases on her fingertips. "What about you, Miyuki? Ana?"
"Mmmm.. I-I don't know." The changeling admits. "I-I.. don't really know what to do with that kind of money besides buying f-food and weapons, I guess.."
"Get it out to my kids. Move them up north along the crescent to get them in a nice school." Ana stares out at the passing fields of green. Up ahead through the window, you can see the beginnings of what is presumably the capital where you've never been - tall, cobbled buildings stacked atop each other that seem to touch the sky, densely packed and a far cry from the unending open fields of the sea.

The bird. We do good with a spotter. But you need to know how to direct it and we’d have to get a pre-trained bird.
>>
>>4294239
Why not one of those semi-immortal familiars? The ones that can die and they either come back after an amount of time, or you pay a few GP to revive them? Alternatively we could get a small flying homunculi or golem. Something that's extremely stealthy and perceptive. A bonus if it's smart enough to speak and alert us of any intruders.

>Falconry lessons
>New and better home for dad, and use some of our share to fund Shibumi's sort of traveling Smithy, with Claire as the guard/face of the operation and Grobbo as additional muscle. Plus whatever else he can do. I dunno, make and sell explosives?
>For Scruffy? Better equipment and enchantments. Are there enchantments to make him harder to kill? Like Dead Pool tier regeneration?
>Books, a tutor, a little movable house lead by horse that also functions as an impromptu store. Just a life of adventuring, and learning

"Mmmm.." You ponder. ".. Falconry lessons. Books. Tutors. A better house for dad. New pants and a shirt."
"Sounds n-nice." Miyuki whispers. "I might b-buy some books.."
"A falcon? You could buy a dedicated fighting spirit with that kind of money." Sigrid snorts.
"Simple. I can appreciate that." Ana responds solemnly.

The carriage comes to a sudden halt with a thick plume of smoke. The guard driver at the front steps out of his seat and sidles out the side, opening up your door. Peering outside the window, you see a vast, bricked gate leading out to an immense tower.
"Stay here." The guard scans the group. "The princess is going to meet with her father privately. Then he'll speak to you." He closes the door and turns to march out toward the tower.

[...]

What feels like nearly two hours pass before the guard returns, opening up the shuttle and exchanging a glance between the four of you. "King Bosphoramus is ready to see you now."
The guard leads you out silently. You can't help but feel a bit anxious as you march, approaching the growing brick tower emblazoned with the same royal insignia that Galia was tucked under just a few days ago. Taking a breath, you walk under the gate leading into the main hall.

A royal blue carpet leads up to a fanciful empty silver throne. Rather, the king stands just in the center of the hall, adorned in a plain blue robe and crown. He lowers his head as you approach.

"Ana. Sigrid. Scruffy. Miyuki." The king lowers his head, his voice solemn. Galia peers out from behind her massive father. ".. I owe you my life for saving my daughter's, and I'd like to extend a formal apology for her brashness in the last few days. The 2 million pieces of gold will be provided to the company and divided as your boss sees fit."

"It's no problem. Glad to have been of service." You initially simply bow your head before feeling a sharp shove as Ana brings you to your knees next to Galia and Miyuki.
"I can't express my gratitude enough." The king keeps his head bowed. "But before you proceed - I'd like to ask you a question that the princess herself just extended to me. She stole a set of royal plate and her grandfather's sword, losing the set and just barely scraping by with the blade. She fled the capital against my orders with two fine, hard working guards and got them gutted out on the frontier by goblins for nothing. She placed you fine mercenaries into a great heap of trouble for several long days - especially you, Scruffy. So why, exactly, should she be allowed to continue adventuring with you like she asked?"

Why should she? Why shouldn't she? She shouldn't because she put herself into a heap of danger in addition to some other things. Why she should? Adventuring is a punishment in of itself to a princess, whom typically have people to help care for her. I do not doubt that some part of her still wants to be out there slaying dragons and saving villages. It might help humble her to understand what it takes to go adventuring. Like learning modesty or how to take care of herself. She'll most likely learn valuable lessons by the time she want to come back home.

One of two things will happen if she continues with us on her adventure.
1.) She will grow out of her adventuring phase and wish to come home.
2.) She will grow more experienced in general and will be able to defend herself in a fight, in addition to a plethora of miscellaneous skill sets.

You take a moment to thief, briefly considering asking for her hand in marriage.

"Well, for one thing, I got to admit, I used to be an adventurer myself. Not a great one, honestly, but good enough to learn how to survive in the Primordial Sea. It's not easy. ".. I see." The king's brow furrows. An almost uncomfortable amount of time passes as the princess continues to peer over her father's shoulders. He remains still and silent for several minutes, at least, before breaking the silence. ".. And you'd take care of her?"
"As we have for the last few days. And we could always return her should she tire." You respond quickly.
"I used to be an adventurer as well. Like my father before me.." The king murmurs, looking to the window. "I suppose.. she owes you her life. And she's an adult now. If she chooses to entrust herself with you after such a short time - I suppose it couldn't hurt for her to understand the people she leads."

If it's not too much of a bother, could you tell us about your father, your time as an adventurer, and your relationship to your father?
What does Galia have to say?

I might be asking a bit too much from this, but talking about his adventuring days with his daughter might not be something he likes to bring up, if he ever has. It's just a hunch.

Oh yeah can we talk to Shibumi really quick? We probably should had talked about this earlier, but Shibumi was actually the gentleman that was able to restore most of the relic sword sans for the wooden pommel. If our Oni friend is willing, would he have to courage to go up to the king and ask for the opportunity to forge a new suit of armor for the princess, in addition to a spare set to his best knight? Nothing says advertising like having the king's best knight strutting around with armor made by the best oni on this side of the Primodial Sea.

"If it's not too much of a bother-.. what was your time like as an adventurer?" You ask, keeping yourself kneeling. "Was it with your father?"
"No, no." The king shakes his head. "It was after his time. I'm not quite THAT old. But-.. I was fond of it. Going back to the guild each evening, talking with my party, trawling dungeons-.. it was.. fun."
"And.. what does Galia have to say?" You turn to the princess. "I believe I promised you a trip to the Adventurer's Guild? You've got a lot to learn about survival and swordplay, and I don't think you'd appreciate me forgetting about it."
"Obviously." The princess snorts. "Someone has to teach you how to read. I'm sure that I'm the only one in the kingdom who could actually put up with you."

"I'll allow it." The king speaks firmly and clearly. "You may bring her out to a guild and let her join your company. You may leave."

[...]

After leaving the tower with the princess in tow, the group of you mill about the outside. The oni and his crew greet you and the princess as he passes with a healthy accompaniment of armed guards. ".. Wish us luck." He winks.
"I.. spoke to my father. We organized a deal." Galia speaks out. "With most of the gold returned, you'll be able to repay your debt with the Butcher Block."
"Grobbo? Grobbo..!" The goblin exclaims.
".. Thank you, princess." The ex-knight murmurs as she follows along with the oni.
"I see." Shibumi nods as he comes to step into the tower.

You and princess join with the rest of the group. "-gonna go spit on the August Conservatory from a sizeable distance." You hear Sigrid finish.
"We- we meet out in front of the tower by tonight- r-right?" Miyuki looks up to the knight.
"Sure. Then we ride the cavalcade out back to Kirin and get back in the caravan. And we can finally get back en route." Ana sighs. ".. Took long enough. Take care of what you need here, Scruffy. Galia. We'll be back to business soon enough. Just gonna write a letter for my family before we start moving."
"Right." You nod. "You.. you wanted to see the guildhouse, right?"
"FINALLY. Took you long enough to take me to the guild." Galia smirks.
"The guild..? Mmm. It's been a while since I've seen the capital's guild." Ana cuts in, tapping at her chin. "Mind if I join, just to take a peek?"
"A-and me, as well." Miyuki speaks out.
"Eh. I'll spit on the conservatory later." Sigrid shrugs.

You stand on your tip toes to wrap your arm around the princess, who doesn't shrink from it. You begin the walk with the Butcher Block down to the guild.
