Even from within your perch inside the trees, the thrum of magic in the air makes your skin crawl.

It has been an hour since you left the small settlement on the side of the road, embarking on the quest that the blacksmith had given you. After crossing the large plains that lead to the forest and not encountering any enemies, you were almost prepared for a fight when entering the woods.

Nothing of the sort awaited you there. Only complete and utter silence.

As you made your way through the trees at a quick place, you heard nothing. No birds chirping, no distant animals, and not even the sound of distant fighting from people making their way here ahead of you. Normally in this game, forests are teeming with life, so having nothing of the sort was enough to rattle you deeply.

That was before you reached your current position, however.

In front of you lies a cocoon of stone. Rather than looking artificially placed, it appears to have swelled out of the ground, the shell almost appearing weaved together rather than having a predictably rough surface. From within, a blue glow pulses, almost overwhelmed by the sunlight that still peeks through the thick foliage – you have no doubt that it’s the source of the magic washing over you. Normally, this in itself wouldn’t pose any issues, but the thing that concerns you is what else is present near the oddity.

The “what else” in question are two large white wolves.

From up here, they look like they’d come up to your chest in terms of height. They look almost graceful as they patrol around the stone, looking very out of place compared to the overwhelming green of the forest. Their eyes are watchful, but they apparently hadn’t seen you duck behind a tree, or scale it with no measure of stealth. This could mean their hearing only extends so far, or they just didn’t see that as a threat.

Either way, you expected something a lot tamer than this.

Putting early game grinding aside, actual missions usually only have a single powerful monster, or smaller ones with larger numbers. It’s always possible that you just got unlucky, but it would make sense that they’d be throwing more powerful stuff at you right off the bat, considering this is a competition for an egregious sum of money.

You’re more than certain you have the skills to pay the bills, so to speak, but it all depends on your plan of approach. Whilst you have confidence, it will only carry you so far in terms of actual combat – strategy is what matters, after all.

Orion Jasper, what would you like to do?

>Hop down out of the tree and try to lead one of them out of the clearing to kill.
>Try to distract both of them so you can dart in, grab the stone, and get out.
>Pull out your bow and attempt to kill them from your position in the tree.
>But wait, OP, where the fuck have you been?
>Write-in.

So, long story short, a few days after I closed the last thread, I managed to snag an appointment at the dentist for my growing tooth problem.

They said that they could get it yoinked, but the only time they could do it was a day before May 22nd, which was going to be the start of the next thread.

And because I'm committed to writing pain free just for the overall enjoyment and better quality, I decided it would be best to write when it was (mostly) healed, as I'd be miserable otherwise.

TL;DR: QM being a baby, but we're here now, so that's neat.

After a few moments of debate, you brace yourself against the tree trunk and pull out your bow, critically analyzing the wolves as you prepare your shot.

It’s no exaggeration to say that there is no deviation in their movements, almost to a borderline mechanical degree. They patrol in a perfect circle, the pair always directly across from each other as they do. Occasionally they look over at each other and snort, but other than that, there appears to be no form of intelligent communication between the two.

As you pull back the bowstring, you concoct a few potential strategies as you narrow down which to hit. If you hit the one closest to you, it would cause the farthest to come over to investigate, meaning you could also nail it with a shot if you’re quick enough on the draw. If you hit the farthest, however, it will make the other turn its back, allowing you to hop down and maybe strike him down with a few flourishes of your blade while its unaware.

There is, of course, room for error – but you are an adaptable sort of guy with a great capacity for winging it.

Which wolf do you want to fire at?

You slowly exhale the breath you’re holding as you wait for the wolves to do another revolution around the stone. You’re more than certain that it holds what you’re seeking – the blacksmith did say he was looking for a stone with monsters near it, after all – so in order to get that, you have to have a perfect shot.

As your target fully makes his way in front of you, your eyes harden, and you let the arrow loose from the string. You can practically hear it whistling through the air in face of the silent forest, and you feel a cold sweat come over you as you wait for the arrow to hit the monster.

Unfortunately, you miss your mark by just a tiny bit.

Whilst you were aiming for the head of the beast, you hit him a little lower than that. Whether it was due to a sudden wind, or maybe due to nervousness, the arrow punctures the wolf right through the upper body, just shy of the neck. It immediately lets out a pained yip as its head snaps around to find the perpetrator, and you wince as the other wolf begins to do the same as he darts over to his kin’s side.

Even from here, as you keep your body low on the tree branch, you can see dark red blood soak through the pristine white coat of the wolf. It would almost be sad if you didn’t know the thing wasn’t a ravenous monster, and would kill you in a heartbeat just to protect that treasure trove.

You’re easily able to steel your heart to the tiny whines and yips of pain as you concoct a plan of action.

>Drop from the branch into the underbrush – you don’t want to stay in one position for very long.
>Stay as still as you can and hope that they don’t look up at you – they haven’t found you yet.
>Tear a twig of the tree and toss it into the underbrush – maybe you’ll be able to fake them out.
>Chance another shot off on the injured wolf – you’d like to stay proactive, if you could.
>Write-in.

As you keep your eyes firmly locked on the pair of alerted wolves, you slowly reach your left hand out and begin to feel up the tree next to you. The bark is rough and cold under your palms, and at first you worry that you won’t find anything to support your plan, but you almost sigh in relief when your hand bumps against the beginnings of a smallish branch.

Wrapping your hand around the protrusion, you begin mentally counting down as you prepare to rip it off and send it careening into the bushes. Theoretically, this should work, but you’d need to do it incredibly fast – they will very much hear the twig snapping assumedly, meaning that you’d have to simulate the twig itself snapping on the ground, and also make it seem like something either crashed to the ground or is in the process of running away from them.

You can’t help the cocky grin that comes across your face as you glare at the wolves, the beginnings of satisfaction bubbling up within you. Adjusting your position slightly to allow for quick movement if necessary, you give yourself an additional second, and then tear the branch from the tree.

SNAP!

Just as the wolves stiffen and begin moving their heads to find the noise, you fling it off into the underbrush with a powerful swing. The more able-bodied wolf practically does a 180 on the spot and immediately dashes in the direction of the stick, an eerie sound of a mixed bark and howl escaping from its throat. The other looks after the wolf as it goes, but doesn’t follow, presumedly either due to its injury or its need to guard the stone cocoon.

Either way, you watch as the other wolf disappears into the underbrush, following your wild goose chase. Your vision trails from that area of the forest to the wolf below you that’s now beginning to move back towards its patrol pattern, panting and whining all the while.

>Descend from the tree and stab at it with your sword before it gets too far away.
>Shoot at it with your bow now that the other one has gone away.
>Move down from the tree and rush towards the cocoon to grab the stone, now that it’s injured.

Your hand immediately flies to yank out another arrow from your quiver, and you notch it in place quickly while eyeing the place the second wolf went off to. It could be coming back at any moment now, so that means expediency is key, which means that you need to pull off a good shot really fast. Good thing you know just how to get it’s attention.

You click your tongue loudly and center your aim directly on the creature’s head. Predictably, its head darts around as soon as the noise breaks the silence, but before it can make any noise as it spots you, you fire the arrow.

It goes directly into its eye and neck, robbing all sound from the wolf other than a tiny gurgle of pain. Seconds later, it falls to the ground, creating a loud thump as all of its weight crashes against the soil.

You idly note out of the corner of your eye that a menu pops up, proudly displaying the following.

>XP: 4 -> 29 (+25)

You can’t help but wonder why there was 4 there, considering it was 0 when you left town, but then you realize why. For every successful hit you score on an enemy, a weapon’s hit modifier is immediately added to your XP bar. So for the two hits with your bow, and the enemy kill, that would indeed equal 29. Usually monsters give far less at the beginning – that’s why grinding is efficient, to build up an early game lead along with quest taking or player killing – but they’re usually worth about 1/10th of your total XP at level 1.

They really are bumping up the stakes for this one, it would seem. Best get a move on regardless, after all, it’s not like the island you’re on is going to sink in 10 hours!

>Dart down and grab the stone – you’re in the clear for the moment, as long as that wolf stays gone.

Whilst there’s quite the temptation to dash down and grab that stone before the other wolf comes back, you force yourself to stay still and get another arrow ready. While you could easily take your prize and make your way back to town, it wouldn’t be cost effective XP-wise. You’ll get 100 for the quest which is already a level up, and those two are additional resources you can exploit.

You grin to yourself as you train your eyes on the underbrush that the wolf left through, waiting for him to come back. It’s a bit of a long process, and you’re not so subtly counting down the hours that you have left before the first break – three hours or so – but eventually, you spot a white muzzle poking through the bushes.

When it first emerges, you can spot that it’s panting from exertion, and perhaps anger at its imaginary prey escaping. Seconds later though, you watch him look around confusedly before identifying the fellow wolf that is now dead and bleeding on the forest floor. As soon as it does, its jowls open in a grotesque howl as it begins to make its way over to the dead wolf.

With it being near the underbrush, you still have a range advantage should you wish to take it out stealthily from this distance. However, if it gets close enough, you’ll be in perfect range to drop down and engage it in melee combat, potentially taking it off guard due to the death of its comrade.

Either way, you’re in position to end this wolf and reap the rewards, so you begin to put your plan into action.

You exhale softly as the wolf begins to rush over, stretching the bowstring to its max possible limit. Taking a moment to gauge trajectory and angle, you shut one of your eyes as you center your aim on the wolf’s head, and you let the arrow fly and strike true. A moment passes as time seems to stop, and you can practically hear flesh tear as the arrow rips open the wolf’s eye, silencing any noises it would make just like the first.

It falls to the ground, and you take a moment to allow yourself a harsh grin. You had been worried about the threat that these wolves might have posed, but it appears you’re still on top form – with no threat in sight, you hop down from the tree branch, landing just a few inches away from the dead pair of white wolves. Their fur with slowly spreading and clotting blood, but they are most certainly dead due to your precise efforts.

If the monsters are this easy, you can only hope that the players will be too.

>XP: 31 -> 56 (+25)
>AMMUNITION: 18 -> 17 (-1)

With all of that said and done, you holster your bow and lightly jog over to the stone cocoon. As you get closer, the feeling of magic washes over you again, and it makes your skin itch. As a mage, the sensation might have been pleasant or relaxing, but your class is unable to harness this resource. Therefore, it feels like an oddity, which is why your skin and teeth are now itching from the sheer unfamiliar power.

Once you are able to look inside, you immediately see the source, reaching in to pluck it out from its little nest of woven stone. It’s very bumpy, and obviously unrefined – there is no smoothness to the bright blue gem that vibrates in your hand, and you can’t help but be slightly hypnotized by the sheer color and energy of it. Considering this was requested by a blacksmith and not a scrivener, it will most likely be used to make a magic weapon or armor, rather than any grimoires or spell scrolls.

“You’re a pretty little gem, eh? If I didn’t need the levels, I’d pocket the fucker and get a better deal.” You talk for the first time in an hour, chuckling lightly as you stow the gem away in your pocket.

(Just a quick note to everyone – there’s currently a thunderstorm rolling through my area, so if I ever am absent for super long without notice, know that my power got knocked out!)

You take a glance at the corpses of the white wolves, but ultimately decide that it wouldn’t be best to take the time to skin them. With you being very unlucky in getting to be on the first sinking island, time is literally of the essence, and it’s a dwindling resource. With three hours until the first break, you need to be light on your feet, especially so you can get into a better situation in order to take on enemies.

With that being said, you begin to move through the forest once again, taking advantage of your enhanced stamina to thunder between the trees and foliage. Apparently the wolves and stone were the cause of the silent forest, because as you move through it, you can actually hear animals again. It properly feels like a place of nature, and not a desolate and deceiving image of what the woods should be like.

Eventually, you emerge from the lush, green trees with no issue. The sky is still bright, just as indicative of time as it would be in real life. The warm air feels good against your skin as you move through the flat fields, and after an hour’s worth of traveling, you see the town you had previously left just as your feet begin to ache.

You idly note that unlike how Warscape used to be, this game actually has a semblance of stamina, which is highly irritating, even if it’s more than what you would usually be capable of.

As you make your way through the antiquated buildings once more, you notice that there are somehow less people on the streets than there were before, causing you to chuckle as you take a few breaths. The shops that were just opening up when you left are finally accepting what little business there is to find, and there’s the slight scent of baking pastries and meat in the air.

“One of the good things about this place,” You idly comment as you walk down the side of the dirt path, nodding to a group of young, staring women who titter and begin excitedly talking among themselves. You sigh and make your way into the blacksmith shop, where the same old man is still working steel over his anvil.

“Ah, yer back. Didn’t think I’d be seein’ ya again.” The gruff man admits, looking into your eyes with his beady black irises. “Got the stone, then?”

You nod at the man and fish around in your pocket, pulling out the almost fluorescent blue stone. The man squints as he takes it from your hands, and upon deciding that it’s what he’s looking for, he nods and promptly tosses it behind him and onto one of his various workbenches. Your eye twitches at this, especially at how (relatively) careful you had been with it, but you sigh and decide to put it behind you.

“Good job, kid. Here you go.” The man reaches to the floor and picks up a leather pouch, tossing it to you as he does. You catch it easily, and as soon as you do, you feel a sudden surge of energy rush through your body. Smiling, you realize what happened immediately, savoring the quick burst of power.

“Thanks. Hey, by the way, do you happen to have a map? I’m looking to navigate more effectively.”

“Can’t say that I do. Ain’t you supposed to be a traveler?” The man chortles, and your brow creases.

“Just looking for a way to get off this island. Are there any ports nearby?”

The blacksmith ponders this question for a bit before speaking again.

“If you follow the road North of town,” he points to the right, which you mentally note, “you’ll find a town that has a few ships that you can hire. Be careful, though, I heard that there’s some weird shit going on around there.”

“How so?”

“Well water’s poisoned up there, and nobody knows why.”

“Hm. Thanks for the info.”

“Have a good one, kid. You look like one of the good ones.”

“Same to you, boss.”

You turn on your heel and leave the shop, feeling refreshed due to a job well done, as well as the level-up. Speaking of which, you maneuver around the shop and out of sight, pulling up the game menu as you do so.

Sure enough, next to your inventory, the level up option is now available for you to peruse. As soon as you click the button, you can feel time grind to a halt around you. The warm air is replaced with an uneasy coolness, and you watch as the colors of the environment fade to grey in face of three boxes that have appeared in front of you. A second later, you watch as the surfaces slide away, revealing a list of icons. Slowly, they begin cycling through them, almost like a slot machine.

You grit your teeth. You thought they might give some more strategic leveling options, but nope, they’ve randomized them. Hopefully you get something good.

After a few seconds of spinning, you watch as the boxes finally settle into place, putting your three options in front of you.

>EQUIPMENT UPGRADE: +1 to REINFORCED LONG BOW. (+2 -> +3)

>PASSIVE ABILITY: SNEAK ATTACK – Additional ranged damage imposed on enemy if player is fully concealed before doing so.

>PASSIVE ABILITY: BEAST HUNTER – Additional ranged damage imposed on animals or animal-like creatures.

You can’t help but grin at that, you had forgotten that the level ups in this game are largely tailored to how you have played things so far. Since you have only killed monsters from the shadows, and only have done so with your longbow, it’s only natural that your boosts would be tailored towards those aspects of your game. These boosts are pretty fucking good too, especially for level 2.

To start with, the equipment upgrade is good because normally you’d have to pay for that, or get a new weapon overall. Having a free boost this early in the game could prove vital against fast acting players.

The sneak attack passive is also very good for this early in the game – having additional damage is always a plus, however you need to be fully concealed from sight to do so, which may prove interesting if you’re in a more cramped space.

And finally, the beast hunter passive is great for grinding for XP and gold, but only towards animal-like beings. This would be fine, considering you’re right next to a forest, however you’re not sure if animals will be prevalent within any of the other islands. If they are, that’ll be great, but you’re in uncharted territory, so you don’t know if you’ll be able to rely on it in the future.

Which one of the three leveling perks would you like to take?

You reach out and choose Sneak Attack without any hesitation.

Due to your experiences in Warscape, staying low and taking advantage of the situation is something you needed to learn from the very beginning. You’re going to need to pull off every possible stop in this situation to secure that $500,000, and that will include exploiting your past experiences to your benefit. Not only that, but this particular ability goes for every type of enemy, compared to Beastmaster.

When you bring your hand away from the Sneak Attack box, that cold feeling goes away instantly, replaced immediately by a shroud of warm air. You briefly look down to yourself and see what appears to be dark smoke curling off of your feet, and just when you’re about to question the thematic flair, the world snaps back into color just as quick as it had been drained of it.

Next to your inventory, you spot a new, yet familiar slot.

>PLAYER SKILLS
>>SNEAK ATTACK (acquired at Level 2).

Looks like you now have a bit of an extra edge, which is always lovely. After checking that your equipment is firmly secured to your person, you step away from the back of the blacksmith’s shop, folding your arms and looking around the quaint town. While you have limited time before the break in a couple of hours, the day isn’t over until 9 PM, so you have quite a few options ahead of you.

Visit the cursed town. Writing now!

>>4290470

Your eyes trail towards the eastward entrance of the town, and you make the decision to not stay here. As much as it’d be nice to settle down in one place to explore a “good story” – as Nancy helpfully put it – you’re here to win, not to dawdle. With the island sinking, and the possibilities of players being around every corner, you simply don’t have the time to have a good time.

Besides, there will be plenty of time to take it slow once you have that sweet, sweet prize money in your hands. For now, it’s time to shift shit into maximum overdrive.

With that in mind, you give a cursory glance around to make sure that no one is spying on you, and you begin to make your way out of town. You’re thankful to have the nice and warm air back, compared to that timeless level up void. You wonder if Chrysanthemum made it creepy on purpose, because if so, that shit is pretty fucked up.

As you approach the gate, you notice that there’s some semblance of a guard sitting to the left of it. There’s nobody on the road currently, which would explain why the man is practically slumped over, instead choosing to sunbathe rather than pay any attention to the road. The man has a tall spear that’s leaned against the shoddy wooden gates, and as you walk towards him, he immediately stiffens and stands.

“Hey, uh, sir. What brings you through here?” His tone is nervous, making you raise an eyebrow.

“I came into town last night and stayed. I’m a traveler from another land.” You respond immediately, picking what the connoisseurs would call the “isekai excuse”.

“That’s alright, but we gotta perform a routine check, you see.” He nervously grasps his spear and stands a little straighter. “Not sure if you heard, but the town a while away from here is having some troubles. We gotta make sure you’re not carrying anything from there, or affected by anything.”

“I didn’t have to go through anything like that last night, and I’m on my way out of town. Why is this an issue?” You say, glaring at the lad.

“It’s, uh, mayor’s orders. I can’t do anything about it, so you’ll have to come with me. Shouldn’t take longer than half an hour.”

You have to resist the urge to facepalm.

>Step past the man – you have no time for his shenanigans, you have places to be.
>Call him out on his behavior – you learned some things about the mayor’s son, so you’ll rake him over the coals.
>Reach into your bag and give him a few gold coins to look the other way. (COST: 30 GOLD)

Thank you very much for coming around to read, and I’ll see all of you tomorrow! Hope you’re having a great night, anons.)

You grit your teeth – who the fuck does this dude think he is? He may just be an AI, but his attitude is seriously grating on your nerves. And so, with that in mind, you do the thing you’re absolutely best at – looking as mean as a motherfucker.

You unleash a withering glare on the poor man, which actually causes him to back against the wall as he stares at you with dawning horror.

“Listen, kid. I don’t have time for this shit – and if your buddy, the mayor’s kid, is the one who told you to do this, then you can tell him to ram your spear up his fucking ass.” You begin to walk through the gate, and he makes the mistake of reaching out to you with a trembling arm. As soon as he’s about to clasp your sleeve, you look at him again, and he freezes like a deer in headlights.

“Touch me and I’m gonna break your fucking fingers.”

You can hear a pitiful noise escape his throat, and you simply continue along the trail, shrugging as you do. You’d feel a little bad about scaring the kid, but in all honesty, you don’t really give a fuck. As soon as you’re a respectable distance away from the town gate, you pick up the pace, and eventually move to a full sprint as you make your way across the spanning dirt road.

A full hour passes before anything of note comes into view.

The road goes along flat land for a sizable amount of the journey, before it weaves between two tall hills. The path is more obviously man-made in this area, although that doesn’t detract from the natural beauty of the scenery – the hills are topped with light green grass and a slight brushing of trees, the warm air is still pleasant even as the clock turns to noon, and you’re almost tempted to sit down for a few minutes to rest your aching feet.

That is, of course, until you see the burning carriage in front of you.

It is impossible to identify what kind of wood it may have been, as it is now blackened into charcoal, embers, and ash. Your brow furrows as you observe the wreckage, which is only just dying down under the noon sun. From how far away you are, you can’t see any great details, due to the dark smoke covering the majority of the structure.

What do you do?

>Get closer to it – you have to go through the area anyways, so you might as well see if anything can be salvaged or investigated.

Investigate the wreckage. Writing now!

You sigh to yourself, stepping forward and drawing out your sword as you do. Something is incredibly fishy about this situation – a recently burning carriage? Sounds like a trap, so you’ll be as cautious as you can. If worst comes to worst, you’ll deal with the attackers – whether they be players or bandits – and reap the XP.

Approaching the wreckage, the smell of smoke is even stronger. The wind is moving it away from you, but the residual effect in the air makes you rub at your eyes with a sleeve as you walk to the side of it. The carriage doesn’t seem to have been breached, as the door is still secured, along with no signs of footprints in the dirt.

Circling around to the front, you wince at the sight that lies before you. Two horses lay in a dead heap, an obvious half circle carved into their thick necks. From what you can see through the smoke, there’s a large pool of blood underneath them, and the reins holding them to the carriage are just on the verge of being broken.

“They tried to run.” You state to yourself, your eye twitching involuntarily.

One of the most obvious cons in this realistic fantasy game is that cruelty is very much possible. Animals act like animals, and the people act like people. You recall an article from a year or two back that denounced the game for allowing cruel practices such as torture and animal slaughter, which was promptly ignored by Chrysanthemum. You’re certain that they don’t condone it, but they’re likely unwilling to compromise in their “grand adventure”.

Stuff like this makes you sick to your stomach.

>Investigate the horses for any potential clues to what happened.
>Open the burnt carriage and see if anything is alive or salvageable.
>Check the surrounding area for any evidence of the perpetrators.
>Continue on, you don’t want to be involved in this further.

Investigate the inside. Writing now!

Taking one last glance at the dead animals, you circle around to the door once again. It’s burnt just as much as the rest of it, the brown wood charred black from the intense heat of the flames. There are some places where small fires are, but most have dwindled down to embers in time. While that suggests that the fire is recent, it also indicates that it has been here for a bit.

Lovely.

You reach forward and grasp what appears to be either a doorknob or a door slider – the bronze is far too warped to tell – and sharply try to pull it open. To your surprise, you can hear the door mechanism snap, and you have to raise your arm to keep the door from falling directly on you. You can feel the heat from some of the embers on your face, but you grit your teeth and roughly shove it to the side.

It wasn’t as secure as you were expecting, but you won’t let that hamper your investigation. Once you wipe off your hands, you peer inside the sweltering interior of the carriage.

In front of you lies two people. One is dead, the other is bound.

The person that is still alive appears to be an adolescent girl wearing clothes that look far too fancy for this area. You spot bruising on both her cheek and neck, the former partly hidden due to the amount of ropes secured around her lips and chin. The one next to her is a woman in ruined steel armor, with several visible wounds present in her stomach and chest. You can’t help but cringe at this, especially at how she’s been specifically placed directly against the other girl, and you notice something peculiar about her immediately.

The dead woman has purple hair and tattoos, either of them being something you haven’t seen in this world.

She’s a player.

“Hey there, friend. Why don’t you step out of the carriage?”

A masculine voice calls from somewhere behind you, punctuated by the sound of several swords being drawn.

Fuck, it’s bandits. It’s always bandits.

>Slowly raise your arms and step out of the carriage, you’ll concede for the moment.
>Immediately dive further inside for cover, being certain to keep the civilian out of the line of fire.

Without a second’s delay, you immediately surge to the right and throw yourself out of sight, being sure to snag the girl by the sleeve of her frilly blouse. You can hear the muffled shriek from behind the many layers of rope, but you can’t bring yourself to care as you hit the wall of the rather spacious carriage. You can hear two or three people begin hurriedly talking outside, which makes you curse to yourself as you look down at the terrified girl.

Her hair is a sandy blonde, and she’s looking up at you with the most terrified eyes you’ve ever seen. She’s obviously been crying – no doubt because of stress and watching another person be killed – and you can practically see her trembling even in the relatively dark cabin.

“Everything’s gonna be fine, just don’t do anything stupid. I’ll untie you afterwards.” You grit your teeth as you look at the girl, and she immediately nods hurriedly, more tears rolling down her bruised cheeks.

Your attention shifts from the hostage to the people who are no doubt approaching the cabin. You don’t know if they have anything other than swords, but you’re undeniably pinned down and outnumbered. You glance around the cabin, but other than the corpse of the player, you don’t see anything of interest other than a few smashed chests.

This makes things complicated, but you’ll deal. A lot rides on this, after all.

>Lie in wait with your bow and shoot the first person who walks in. They have to come in sooner or later.

Looking at the girl once more and raising a finger to your lips, you slowly creep across the interior of the carriage in order to get near the entrance. In your mind, the first thing you need to confirm is if they have ranged capabilities, which you can easily do. If they have bows trained on the door, a sudden movement should be enough to cause them to fire. It’s not like there are any windows for them to shoot through, after all.

You try and listen as you reach the cusp of the door frame, but the outside has fallen completely silent. Other than the occasional crackle and hiss on a fire still burning, you can’t make out anyone talking, which makes your brow furrow. After a moment’s consideration, you slowly reach out your hand, hoping for someone to take the bait.

The sound of a bowstring being fired fills the air, and you only barely pull your hand back before the arrow pierces the air where your hand used to be. A moment later, it embeds itself in the head of the dead woman with a meaty crunch. You can hear a choked sob from the other end of the carriage, which makes you hiss in irritation.

If she gives away her position in the carriage, you’d be more than certain they’d try to bust down the weakened walls and take her without a fuss.

“This doesn’t need to be any more trouble than it’s worth, boy. Just step out, drop your weapon, and hand over your valuables!”

The male’s voice is closer than it was earlier.

>”Are you sure we can’t talk this out?” Try and negotiate while pulling the dead woman back in order to loot her.
>Stay silent and wait for someone to make the mistake of entering the carriage.

You stay still and adjust your sword so that you can swing it at whomever walks through the entrance. They have to come looking in eventually, and you doubt that they’ll be prepared for you to stab them as soon as they make themselves known. Your Sneak Attack doesn’t proc this way, but a regular stab will do the trick.

Time passes in silence. Maybe a minute, maybe only half, but you can’t place any noise coming from outside the carriage. It’s a standoff that has you very tense, to the point where you can hear your own heartbeat pounding in your ears. Where the fuck are they? You’re not sure, and as you become more and more worried, something finally happens.

Right next to you, you hear the sound of something hard hitting wood. You let out a surprised noise as you try and pull away, but you watch as a sword is shoved through the weakened wall with incredible force, and you can see it pierce your left arm.

Sharp pain rolls up your arm and into your chest and head, making you bite down on your tongue as hard as you can to stop from screaming. Disturbingly enough, you watch as blood begins to leak out of your virtual body, spattering across the blade, the wall, and your tunic.

You struggle to get your sword up in the midst of the sudden pain, and you attempt to ram it back through the wall. Pushing forward with all of your might, the sword does go through the wall, but you don’t feel any form of impact. Just as you realize that the man has dodged, you feel more pain as the man slowly puts more force on the sword, slowly dragging it down your arm through the wood. The pain is almost mind-numbing, and you only just manage to pull your arm away from it with a few shouted curses.

>HP: 85/125 (-10)

Cursing to yourself, you blindly reach out and grab something solid off the ground, whipping it towards the other end of the carriage with all your might. You watch as the tied up girl flinches as the sudden impact near her head, but you can hear footfalls immediately go to that area. You don’t have a lot of time before they start trying to impale the wall over there, but as you move to pull your sword out of the wall, you hear wood crashing in front of you.

“There you are. This coulda been nice. The boss’ll love this.”

The man before you is impossibly burly with a deep tan, stringy and unwashed hair sticking to his greasy face. From behind brown stubble, you make out a set of rotten teeth as he cruelly grins at you, hefting an axe over his leather-adorned body, although you don’t see any ranged weapons in sight.

Three of them attacked me, which means that only one should have a bow.

You have only a moment to react. What do you do?

>Tackle him and begin pummeling his head with your fists. It’ll buy you some time to get your bearings.
>Duck low to the ground and pull the corpse of the player over your body as a makeshift shield.

You let out a shout as you tear the sword from the wall, swinging it at the man in a large arc with a hateful expression across your face. He apparently hadn’t expected the sudden burst of strength, as he recoils as far back as he can. Unfortunately, it’s not far enough to escape your blade, as it lands a clean hit across his chest, cutting through the leather surprisingly easy.

“You ain’t gonna get one on me, motherfucker. Bring it on.” You say, clenching and unclenching your left fist as the pain from the wound fades away. The man’s face is surprised for a moment, but it shifts to a strange mixture of rage and curiosity as he rights his posture.

“Alright, we’ll see about that.”

He surges forward and swings the axe at you, having to slouch slightly due to the cramped interior of the carriage. You bring up your sword and slam the flat end against the side of the slightly rusted axe, sending it off course and into the wall. With a moment of opportunity upon you, you rush forward and go for a strike on him, however he raises the handle of his weapon to block it with an audible clang. It doesn’t stop you from sneaking past his guard and landing a punch directly on his chin.

You’re a slippery bastard when you need to be, and now is definitely one of those times. What do you do?

>Try and lead him out of the cabin. You don’t want the hostage to get caught in the crossfire, especially if they try to come through the walls.
>Keep him at bay inside the carriage. With the cramped area and his height, you have the advantage on him if you can finish this quick.
>Dart out of the cabin and look for the ranged fighter. If you can take him down, then you’ll have maneuverability on the outside.

After a moment’s consideration, you believe that staying in the cart is the best option at the moment. For one, with him being contained due to his size, it’ll give you an advantage. For two, you’d prefer to keep an eye on the hostage, especially if these other cronies want to play FBI and bust the walls down.

“Thought you’d be a bit of a better shot.” You taunt the bandit, aiming a slash towards his head, which he parries with the axe.

“Same goes for you, boy! Just hand over the girl and your money, and you don’t have to die!”

He tries to echo your earlier movement and punch you, but you’re able to duck beneath his burly fist to evade. You take a moment to glance back at her, only to find that she has her eyes screwed shut, trying desperately not to acknowledge the battle in front of her. You can’t blame her, but you’re taken out of your observing by an arm forcefully shoving you against the wall.

“You’re the one who tied her up, asshole! Settle for what you fucking started.” You pray that this is enough to keep the other two from interfering, and the both of you swing at each other simultaneously. A shower of sparks bathes the inside of the carriage, and you’re both left struggling as you try to overpower the man in order to ensure a safe blow on him.

From this distance, you can smell his horrid breath, and feel his beady eyes glaring deep into yours.

This man is vile. Not only in attitude, but in everything else as well.

The moments are overwhelmingly tense, both of you putting all of your strength into keeping your position upright. Just as you can feel your arms begin to ache under the might of the man, you slowly feel the pressure lessen as you push back against him. You can see his bloodshot eyes widen in surprise, and just when you get him back far enough, you sharply pull your blade away from the lock, spin to the side, and drive it directly into his abdomen.

He immediately shouts and spits up blood – some of which that gets onto you – and you’re forced to dive away as the force of his axe cleaves off and through part of the wall. With actual sunlight filtering in, the bloody scene looks all the more horrific.

“Not a single shot.” You smirk viciously, twirling your sword with a flourish. “Didn’t you hear me the first time?”

“BOYS! Get your asses in here immediately!” The man roars again, pressing a hand to the wound with a hiss. The crimson substance leaks through his fingers, and you take a moment to reflect on how close you had came to being either chopped, or thrown through the fucking wall.

This game can be incredibly vicious, especially when it comes to tactics. Ais are capable of the same cunning humans are, after all. It’s a wonderful realm of technology, but quite scary at the same time, especially when you add the blood and viscera into it.

You nervously eye the now partly destroyed and the entryway. That’s another form of escape or entrance for the two men on the outside, which doesn’t make you feel very confident. You’re doing well now, but what about in a minute?

The tables can turn quite quickly, after all.

>Try to shove the larger bandit through either the wall or the entryway. You can use the time to undo the woman’s bindings.
>Continue your assault. You don’t give a fuck about one men or three – you will not lose this early.

Rather than wasting effort on worrying about those outside of your reach, you narrow your eyes and dart towards the large bandit. His large hand is still pressed against his stomach, and yet he still has the speed to deflect your first and second shots, and jump away from the third.

“You’re a quick little fucker, aren’t you?” He grouses, a trail of blood leaking from his mouth and down his stubbled chin. “You’re gonna be damn well lucky if I don’t flay you when I’m done.”

You have to fully resist the urge to laugh out loud.

“Must I really point out the obvious here?” You send a knowing look at his bleeding stomach, which makes him growl. You take another chance to ensure that the lady behind you is safe, and when you confirm that, you move forward again to keep the man at bay.

You can tell that his wounds are beginning to catch up with him, as his responses are slowing slightly. It’s not enough that it’s costing him anymore health, but you can see the signs of exertion as he almost sends the sword out of your hands with a swing, which you counter with a boot to the hand holding his stomach.

“I can do this all day, buddy.” You smirk once more and attempt another strike on him. However, as you do, you spot one of the men finally popping up out of the corner of your eye. He’s began to step into the entrance way, and as soon as he sees your movement towards his boss, he raises his bloody sword to either stab you or deflect the blow – you’re unsure which.

That’s the fucker that stabbed me. He’ll get his soon.

As you move forward, you aren’t fast enough to escape the man’s sword from biting into you again. You are entirely focused on wounding the leader of this ragtag group, and you feel the cold steel enter into the same arm once again. Another bout of pain courses through your body, but you channel it into rage as you swing at the boss with all your might.

>HP: 55/125 (-30)

Fortunately, you don’t miss your mark. The sword cleaves through the man’s armor once more, and just as he screams in agony, you move forward and shove him with all your might. You watch as his weight is sent flying across the cabin, and as he hits the wall, it breaks from under the strain of his body. He tumbles out from the inside, and light casts away the last vestiges of darkness inside the room. You watch as some of the roof falls on top of the man, and for a second, he lays motionless while his subordinate watches in horror.

Holy shit, that was a pretty good hit. You’d bet that normally, he wouldn’t have been so easy to get off his feet. However, thanks to your previous efforts, his reflexes have slowed. You can’t help but feel satisfied as you witness the product of your carnage, even with your arm burning.

Kill the boss. Writing now!
>>
>>4293509

You surge forth like a releasing spring and move past the other man in the carriage, solely focused on finishing your fight with the ringleader of this group. Although he’s not the one who’s wounded you the most, you would assume that easily killing their leader would cause a drop of morale, so ending him first seems like the logical option.

Also, fuck him. Dudes who orchestrate the tying up of wayward maidens are pretty shitty.

As soon as you step out of the interior, you find yourself barely moving out of the way of an arrow fired at your torso. Looking to your right, you spot a man hunched over in some bushes on the hill, already reaching for another arrow. A quick look around shows that they really are the only three enemies, which fills you with some more confidence as you reach the downed boss.

He’s in the process of trying to get himself up, as you can see his hands grasping at the debris as tightly as he can. As much as you’d love to make a show of it just to prove a point, you’re very aware that time is of the essence, both in the sense of your approaching break and the fact that there’s a hostage in the carriage. Therefore, just as the man brings his head up to stare hatefully into your eyes, you swing your sword and slit his throat in one, smooth motion.

He makes no sound other than a halted gurgle, dark rivulets of blood escaping from the wound and his lips. You wince as you can see some blood bubbling as he attempts to breath, but moments later, he chokes and ceases movement.

You hear a gasp off from behind you.

One down. Two remain.

Wiping the blade off on your pant leg, you turn around and immediately book it back towards the cabin. The resulting clash is loud, and you spot his eyes widen further behind a mop of brown hair.

“I’d stand down if I were you, no need for this to get any bloodier.” You tell the boy, attempting to feint and land a blow on him. However, despite his fear, he just barely manages to avoid it, causing you to step back as he tries to cut through your stomach.

“Bullshit, you’re a fucking animal.” He hisses, terror apparent in his voice. “You’ll kill us the moment our back is turned, just like you did the captain!”

(Got hit with a sudden wave of lethargy. Sorry for the wait, words suck!)

“He offered you a way out! All you had to do was drop your stuff, dumbass!”

The man hollers at you, clumsily swinging his sword in a manner that you’d expect from an untrained bandit. Even looking at him from this distance away, he looks like a man barely into his 20s, and a lack of training shows. You’re starting to have a suspicion that his wounds on you was due to your own negligence rather than any skill on his part.

“I’m not that easy of a target.”

As soon as you say this, you charge forward and slam the flat of your blade against his, sending his swing off kilter and into the wall. Following off of this movement, you drive your fist into the side of his head, bringing your sword up and shoving it through the man’s leg. Before he can move back or recover, you rip the blood-soaked blade from the wound and drive it directly into his chest, ducking away from another strike as you do.

You wonder if it’s a bad thing that you’ve become so efficient at killing fictional humanoids, and then promptly realize that you’ve been doing so for five years.

Shit, it pays the bills, though.

The brown haired man opens his mouth to either speak or spit out some of his blood, and you respond in kind with tearing the sword out once more, and making a stab at his throat. You raise your boot and plant it directly against his stomach, sending him careening from the inside and out into the open dirt. A second later, you see an arrow embed itself in the man’s arm, and you have to stifle a laugh.

Looks like the ranger was waiting for any form of movement. That’s fucking hilarious.

(Still feeling bad, bleh. Sorry for the continued wait!)

You don’t spend any time grieving over the man that you absolutely eviscerated, instead moving past the door and snagging the leg of the woman to drag her out of the line of fire. Predictably, another arrow is fired off, and this time you can hear the sound of a muffled “Shit!” from outside. You roll your eyes – it looks like now that the number majority is up, the archer is starting to lose his nerve.

As you reach for the woman’s dead body, you hear a muffled shriek from the tied up girl. Whipping your head towards her, you can spot her frantically shaking her head in an almost insane fervor.

“The fuck’s wrong with you, is the body trapped?” You ask her with an impatient tone, which only makes her motions double in speed. Groaning, you unceremoniously begin looking over the body, patting down her legs and armor for anything that sticks out to you. A moment passes, and just as you begin to think that this may have been a wasted action, you can feel something in one of her pockets.

“Whew, thank god.” You murmur, reaching in and dumping all of the contents into your hand.

In your now cupped palm rests two gold coins, and a small vial filled with silvery, translucent liquid. You can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment – the bandits must have looted her and missed this shit – but whatever’s in this vial intrigues you very much. Just as you’re about to uncork the vial, the woman’s muffled voice gets louder, and you’re sorely tempted to go over there and knock her out for being a nuisance.

“Can you shut up, please?” You try asking nicely, to which she begins trying to inch her way towards you. To be completely honest, it looks completely sad and unbefitting of an apparent noblewoman, and you almost feel bad for mentally comparing her to a worm having a seizure.

After a few more seconds of staring hatefully at the writhing woman, you sigh deeply and make your way over, raising your sword as you do. As soon as you get near her, she immediately freezes, staring up at you with watery blue eyes. You lean down near her, and bring the blade up to the ropes.

“If you scream when I remove these, it’s going to be bad for you. Do you understand me?” You stare her dead in the eyes, and she nods fast enough that you’re surprised she didn’t give herself whiplash. Taking her at your word, you roll her over so the back of her neck is exposed, and you begin to saw through the bindings as quick as you can. Normally, you’d try to untie the many knots, but that’d take too much time.

After a minute or so of stressful sawing, you finally get through the hastily secured ropes. As soon as they’re away from her, she begins inhaling air through her mouth at a rapid pace, enough to signify that she may be going through a sort of panic attack. You almost want to grouse and tell her to get on with it, but you’re well aware that it won’t help, so you simply place a rough hand on her shoulder, causing her to look at you with fright.

“Listen, they ain’t gonna hurt you as long as I’m here. Why the hell don’t you want me to drink that vial? Be quick with it, before that guy gets any funny ideas. Try your best to calm down.” You give your best effort, and sheathe your sword once more, instead pulling out the reinforced bow and turning so you’re facing the openings into the carriage.

She takes a few more moments to try and reign in her breath, before continuing in a very raspy voice. The amount of screaming – both on your appearance and likely beforehand – has obviously caught up with her, and she ends up coughing out her sentence.

“That vial…is…medicine. Please…don’t…it’s for my father...” She coughs again, a small sob escaping as she does.

You give her a good long look, and then sigh once more. You’re not sure why you’re sighing so much recently, but you have a slight feeling that you’re echoing somebody else in this world, so you stop immediately.

As much as self preservation is your top priority, you do realize that you could get a pretty nice bonus if you listen to this girl. For one, she’s obviously a noble, which is self-explanatory. For two, her father is ill, and he may reward you for making sure that his daughter doesn’t die throughout this whole scenario. That’s enough for you, so you simply rise up and nod to her.

Oh, you might as well show her a gesture of good will, considering you just brutally murdered two people and then looted someone’s corpse. You reach into your pocket, pull out the vial, and press it between her bound hands.

“Just so you don’t think I’m gonna fuck off with it. Be back in a bit, girl.” Before she responds, you steel yourself, and then turn on your heel and rush out the door. If you wait in here forever, it’ll result in a stalemate, and your priority is to end this conflict as quickly as possible.

You may be a bit cocky, but it’s fine, you’re doing relatively good in this fight!

As soon as you step beyond the threshold, your eyes immediately fall towards the bush you last saw the man in, raising your bow in order to fire at him before he has the opportunity.

Silence reigns for a moment.

He’s not there.

You could have seen this coming, really. It’d only make sense that he’d move somewhere else considering that you saw his location. Resisting the urge to curse, you instead do a sweep of the area, pulling your bowstring back as far as it will go.

Seconds pass before you hear the sound of another arrow being shot.

You swing around just in time to feel a sharp pain spread throughout your shoulder, causing you to gasp due to the sudden agony. Not bothering to look down, as you don’t particularly want to see the arrow now embedded in your shoulder, you manage to catch sight of the man who shot you ducking behind one of the trees further up on the hill.

>HP: 35/125 (-20)

Gritting your teeth, you release your hold on the bowstring and reach down to pick up a charred piece of wood, whipping it as hard as you can across the ground to your left. You wait for a second, and then you see the not very smart bandit poke his head out of cover to track the sound. As soon as you see even the slightest bit of movement from him, you pull back the string and send an arrow flying towards the man.

He hears the sound far too late. You watch him physically turn his head in order to track the new noise caused by the arrow whistling through the air, and the look of terror when he identifies it. Just as he goes to pull himself back into cover, the arrow hits him dead between the eyes, and the scream that echoes through the hilly path is almost deafening. Moments later, however, all sound fades from the area.

The silence is almost oppressing, but after seconds of nothing else jumping out at you, you almost collapse against the ground in a tired heap.

“Fuck…for a level 1, they sure are tricky, huh?” You chuckle aloud, yanking the arrow from your arm and sliding it into your quiver.

>ORANGE VS. BANDIT GROUP CONCLUDED!
>ORANGE WINS!

>XP: 82/200 (+10)

This gain was hardly worth jack shit at the end of the day, but you know that every inch up that meter equals an easier time for you in the long run. An additional 10 XP could be what gives you an advantage over another player, and all that.

Fuck, you’re exhausted, though. All of the stabbing and dodging really does take a lot out of you, even inside of a video game. Now that you finally have a moment of silence on this path, what would you like to do?

Free the probably traumatized woman. Writing now!
>>
>>4295202

You allow yourself a little time to catch your breath, but your mind wanders back to the woman currently tied up. What exactly is her father afflicted with, and why did she come through such an open area? To be fair, you’re aware that nobles aren’t exactly the smartest people in the world, however if it was that important, you’d think she’d have taken some precautions.

“Should have had more than one guard, at the very least. Wonder where the drivers are.”

Remarking this under your breath, you rise off of the ground and roll your shoulders, stepping back into the carriage. At this point, calling it what it used to be seems off – if anything, it’s a husk of its former self. The woman has gone still since you left, and is now staring at the wall blankly. When she hears your footsteps, she twitches and looks over at you.

“Looks like it’s your lucky day, girl. Problem’s solved.” You say casually, drawing your sword. “Turn over so I can cut those binds. Then you can tell me what the fuck happened here.”

She doesn’t say anything, but complies with your request, making it easy to saw through the thick pieces of rope. When she’s free, she immediately scoots away from you and sits against the wall, rubbing her wrists as she does. You spot that they’re bruised and bleeding in places, no doubt from her attempts to escape her imprisonment.

“Alright, now that that’s over—”

“You…killed all those people…” She chokes out, looking at you in abject fear.

“Yeah, because they were going to kill the both of us. Don’t go calling me a monster for it, especially since I just saved your ass.”

Your words must seem far too callous to her, because from the way she looks, it’s like the weight of them have slapped her across the face.

“Why the hell would you go this far without a proper guard? Aren’t you noble types smart enough to have more than one person in the cabin with you?”

You can see a brief hint of confusion flash across her face, but it disappears in lieu of an expression that you could only describe as “hoity toity”.

“Because…she was supposed to be strong enough to—”

“Cut the shit, lying won’t do you any good.”

Her words sputter out immediately, and you can almost hear her teeth click as she shuts her mouth.

>”You’re not a noble, even if you’re dressed like one. I’m not that dumb.”
>”Who was that woman, and was she really your only guard?”

Whilst her not being smart enough to hire a proper guard could be due to her own incompetence, her reaction when calling her a noble and her immediate shift in attitude are indicators that she’s not what she seems. It’s funny, when she isn’t talking, she definitely looks the part of a noble – fair skin, blonde hair, a fancy outfit. She was obviously attempting to put on a farce.

“I’m not that dumb, girl. You aren’t a noble, even if you’re dressed like one.” You say calmly, causing her to flinch. Not paying any attention to her emotional strife, you instead sit down on the ground, leaning against one of the ruined walls. “Spill the beans quick, otherwise I’ll leave you out here. I have places to be.”

“I…don’t know—”

You glare at her.

“…yeah, you’re right. I’m just…pretending.”

You glare further, because you already knew that, goddamnit.

“I dressed like this because it’d get me a free ride to the place I needed to go. People around these parts don’t check for pedigree, all you have to do is have a pretty outfit and the right attitude.”

“So you’re a con artist, then. Should have drank that vial when I had the opportunity.”

“I wasn’t lying about that! My father really needs that medicine, sir. He’ll…well, he’ll die without it.”

“How do I know you’re telling the truth? As far as I know, you’ll stab me in the back as soon as I turn around. Only reason you haven’t until now is because you were tied up, right?” You grin at her, laying on the inflammatory remarks as thickly as you can. One part of you is irritated that you’ve been lied to, the other wants this girl to hurry up.

“THAT’S NOT TRUE! The whole village is going to die at this rate, and this was supposed to be one of the cures!” She thrusts her hand out towards you, showing the vial with the silver liquid within. “The alchemist said so!”

So she’s from the “cursed village”, then. Lucky coincidence.

>Ask what’s wrong with the village. The blacksmith was a little scarce on details.

“Are you talking about the village down this path?” You know very well that she is, but offering her a branch to keep talking means more information for you in the future.

“Yeah, it’s called Penrith. You…haven’t heard of it? I mean, I know we’re in dire straits, but we were pretty well known for our fish…”

“Don’t care. What’s wrong with it?”

She glares at you, but continues speaking.

“Last month, there was an attack by some…well, strange creatures. They came at night, and the guards managed to fight them off, but the day after…people started to get really sick. We think it’s because of the water, and whatever it is, it starts rotting people from the inside out. Sometimes it can take hours, days, or even weeks. We used what little healing we had left to keep bringing people back, but it doesn’t take away the poison, it just regenerates the body. We’re out, now, and the disease is spreading.”

That…actually sounds horrible, jesus.

“And that liquid is meant to be a cure?”

“We think it is. The alchemist has written several letters to other scientists, and one of them finally got back to him. This is supposed to be an improved health potion, and just a few drops should be enough to cure any ailment…and with this, we might be able to synthesize more if it works, even if it doesn’t kill the curse. We can at least keep people alive that way.”

“…well, shit, I’m glad I didn’t end up drinking it. Why was it on the girl?”

“She…was holding it for me. She was a lot stronger than I am, I think.”

“Where’d you find her, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“On the way back to Penrith. Tensions are a little high in town, so I thought it’d be nice to have more protection than just my drivers…as soon as she saw me, she pledged that she couldn’t leave “a maiden like me” without a proper guard.” She draws her knees to her chest, wrapping her arms around them. “I hadn’t had the heart to correct her.”

You wince.

>”Where are the drivers, then? Sounds like you had enough firepower to fight off three bandits.”

It’s no doubt that she’s made a fatal error in enlisting that woman to guard her, especially under the guise of being someone important. Hell, just a few minutes ago, you were thinking of the reward you could have gotten from her being a noble, so you can’t exactly blame the player for the effort. Still, if this were regular society, you’d undoubtedly be disgusted with her, even if she couldn’t have known what would happen.

No matter what, though, you need to calm her down. She looks like she’s about to burst into tears all over again.

“So, are you a fisherman, then?” You break the tense silence, resting your forearm against a knee. “I’m surprised you’re not infected yourself, even if you don’t work at any docks.”

You see her posture loosen just a bit.

“My father is. As soon as he realized what was happening, he quarantined himself in our house, and sent me off to stay with my grandmother so it didn’t reach me. I know he was one of the ones who received the last bits of healing, so I can only hope he’s still okay.”

“Well, if he was fine when you left, I’m sure he’s fine now. How long ago did you leave?”

“Two days ago.”

Oof. That’s rough, buddy.

“I’m…sorry?” You get out, visibly wincing at the unknowing faux pas. She sighs and clutches the vial to her chest.

“It’s okay. I’m just worried about how I’m gonna get there now, haha. I could walk back to Moon’s Hallow, but I’m not sure I trust anyone to get me there.”

“Why’s that?”

“The drivers were two of the three bandits who assaulted me. Their leader was trailing us the entire time, and as soon as he gave the word, they killed the horses, killed Genevieve, tied me up, and torched the cabin.”

“Wow.”

The word slips out of its own accord – that’s an incredible bout of shitty luck.

>”I was already heading over there. I won’t slow down for you, but you can come with me.”

“Well, I’m already heading over there – to Penrith, that is. If you’re looking for expediency, I can take you over there, although I won’t slow down for you.” You look over at the girl, and she stares back in surprise. “It’s only a little while away from here, but I expect you to pull your weight should we get bogged down by any more enemies.”

“That’s, uh…I didn’t expect you to offer that, to be honest.”

“You’re lucky that I did – you’re a liar, but hey, you can trust that I won’t cut you down for it. I would have already if that were the case.” You chuckle at your own dark humor, and rise off of the ground. You look down at your left arm and grimace – the tunic has been torn in several places and is covered in blood.

You’ll have to buy a new one, or at least some armor, when you reach Penrith.

“So, how about it?”

You watch the girl ponder, obviously weighing the pros and cons as she does. Just as you’re feeling an urge of impatience worm its way into your head, she eventually sighs and gets off the ground as well, stumbling and catching herself on the wall.

“I mean, I’d be foolish not to take the offer. You’re crazy strong, and I’d probably just get tied up again if I went by myself. So sure, I’ll come with you.” She smiles weakly at you, wincing as she grazes her bruised face in an attempt to push back her hair. “Be warned, though, there’s a cordon around the entrance to the village. It’s hard to get in or out.”

“I gathered that. A guard gave me some hassle outside of Moon’s Hallow, although I suspect that was on the order of the mayor’s kid, who’s notoriously an asshole.”

She chuckles at the crass language, and moves past you in order to walk out of the carriage. She casts another, long look at the corpse of Genevieve. You think you can hear her murmur an apology, although it might have just been the wind.

“Should we get going then, uh…what’s your name?”

“Orion.”

“That’s a…unique name.”

“You’re not the first to say so. What’s yours?”

“My name’s Tina. For what it’s worth, good to meet you, even if you scare the living shit out of me.”

Now you’re the one that chuckles at the language.

“Might be good of you to be. Do you want to get going now, or rest up a bit? There’s plenty of daytime left to burn.”

“Up to you. I don’t really have a preference.”

“How about we get going now, then? Might as well make as good of time as we can before nightfall.” You say to her, stepping into the sunlight as you do. She follows you out, and gazes as the dead horses sadly.

“Yeah, that would be best. The guards can get cranky at night, so at least we should try to hurry it up.”

“Sounds good to me, but I have something I need to do first.”

“What’s that?” She looks to you curiously.

“I’m going to loot the fuck out of these bodies. If those assholes are gonna fuck with me, and they aren’t alive to use the shit, then I’m going to take them.” You say with a matter of fact tone of voice, immediately stalking over to the boss’s corpse and beginning to rifle through his belongings. You can see her wrinkle her nose in disgust, but she doesn’t stop you from going through every body on the scene (apart from Genevieve, who you’ve already looted).

After a little bit, you gather up your findings.

>One regular wooden bow (+0).
>One reinforced iron axe (+1).
>One iron sword (+0).
>Four arrows (ARROW TOTAL: 16 -> 20).
>One bottle of oil (50% remaining).
>40 gold coins (222 -> 262).

Shit, you’re getting quite the haul of gold for this stage of the game. Not only that, but you can deduce that they used the bottle of oil to light the carriage on fire. Probably coated some arrows with it, struck them until they started burning, and shot at the carriage until it caught flame. A decent enough strategy, although it’s pretty flimsy at the end of the day.

It’s also worth noting that 30 of that gold was on the bandit chief, and the others only have 5. What a cheap bastard, although that’d be consistent with the bandit rhetoric. Not only that, but other than weapons, they were remarkably scarce on actual items.

“Are you…ready to go, now?” Tina asks you, still looking disgusted with the scene.

>”Yeah, let’s get moving. We’re burning daylight, as they say!”

“Yeah, I suppose. By the way, do you happen to recognize the dude leading them? If they were posing as drivers, maybe he was somewhere in the town as well?” You ask Tina, beckoning her over. She reluctantly obliges, looks briefly, and immediately tears her eyes away, shaking her head as she does so.

“Nope. Never seen him before, and I definitely don’t want to see him now. You did a number on him…”

In the name of making sure that the woman doesn’t throw up, you instead stand back up and walk down the long dirt road, making sure she keeps step with you. She trails behind for a few minutes due to her footwear – she has heels and everything – but eventually she gets irritated enough that she tosses them into the underbrush, jogging so that she’s walking side by side with you.

“Didn’t those cost some money?” You ask her, idly checking your bowstring to make sure it’s still attached.

“No, I found them over by Grasmere, two towns past Moon’s Hallow.”

“Could have sold them, then.”

“Too much effort, especially with how bad things are back at Penrith. I’d rather them spend money on food than fancy dresswear.”

“How pragmatic of you.”

The conversation continues like this for several more minutes as you move further into hilly territory, the trees on them eventually forming a canopy over the dirt road. Sun still filters in, but it’s enough that you’re relatively protected from the heat. You’re also far enough that the scent of death and smoke is long gone, replaced by the smell of fresh air and nature.

Looking to break the silence, you speak.

“So, are you any good with a weapon?” You ask her, motioning to the stack of weapons you’re carrying.

“Ah…well, not really, but I’m sure I could learn in a short time if you need me to?” She looks at the weapons as well, before meeting your eyes with a quizzical expression. “If you’re thinking that I should fight as a manner of pulling my weight, I can only promise to give it my all.”

You cast her a suspicious look. The way she responded seems a little off to you, and on second thought, you’d rather not trust someone you just met with watching your back. You’re perfectly capable of taking on any threats on your own, as evidenced by the way you cut through three bandits like they were child’s play.

Admittedly, if something decently strong comes across your path, you might be fucked, but she doesn’t need to know that.

“Was just asking, but if you don’t have the training, might as well not even bother. I’m sure I’ll be able to take down anything troubling us – even if the guards want to raise a fuss.” You chuckle to yourself, but she looks positively aghast at the implication. Nonetheless, the two of you fall back into silence in lieu of listening to the chirping of birds, and the journey continues.

Eventually, the two of you break away from the canopied road and move back into the sunlight, although the blue sky has now clouded over. The slightly cool breeze is a welcome break from the warm air, although as you continue forth, an…ominous feeling lies in the air, enough to cause goosebumps to break out across your arms. As you make your way around a particularly winding stretch of road, you see the cause.

On the horizon sits an expansive, although rudimentary village. There are hardly any tall buildings to speak of other than guard towers, and any that are visible are made of wood rather than stone. As your vision trails left, you spot that there’s a sandy beachfront that the city is sat on, along with several large ships pulled up at port. Interestingly enough, however, there are no fishing boats in the water, along with no ships making their way to and from the port. Not only that, but from where you’re standing, it doesn’t look like the cordon Tina mentioned is in place at all.

From here, the city almost looks dead.

“Well, there it is. Penrith. Kind of a sorry sight, huh?” Tina remarks with a chuckle, brushing her hair out of her eyes with a hand. “You can probably feel it in the air at this point, right? It doesn’t feel good here anymore.”

“You can say that again. Are any of the ships active?”

“Not at the moment. Everyone’s afraid of leaving the port because of the water – they’re afraid of bringing what we’ve got to the other islands.”

So you can get off the island from this location. Very good to know – with none of the ships active, that means you can make a base in this area as you work to unfuck this problem.

“Well, hopefully this issue can be resolved soon—”

You get cut off mid sentence by a sudden tugging sensation in your gut, nearly making you double over. It isn’t painful, but it’s enough to take your breath away, and Tina turns around to look at you.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine – be back in a bit.”

“Huh?”

Not even a moment later, you find your vision suddenly fading to black, and a strange feeling of calm falling over your mind.

Looks like you’ve hit the first break point.

It’s akin to waking up, but in slow motion – you’re aware that the seat is pressing against your back, you’re slowly able to move your arms and legs once more, and the overwhelming majority of the crowd screaming is enough for you to snap your eyes open.

The hell? Why’re they going so crazy this early in the match

You sit up fully as the pod opens up, and you look around at your fellow competitors doing the same. You can spot Nancy farther down in the lineup, but you’re immediately distracted by several other people trying to pander to the crowd. Not only that, but you watch as several members of security storm up onto the stage, forcefully separating two players who were about to begin a physical altercation.

All of the noise makes you wince.

“THERE WE HAVE IT, FOLKS! THE FIRST HALF OF THE FIRST DAY IS COMPLETED!” It takes a monumental effort to not stand up and clobber the announcer. “Members of the audience and competitors, you will see that there are three doors other than the entryway placed around the stands – please exit through there to find food vendors, bathrooms, and all necessary amenities! The game will begin once more in an hour! To all eliminated players, seats have been prepared for you in the stands as well!”

A resounding cheer echoes throughout the arena, and you suddenly regret not bringing any Advil. As you move out of your pod, you spot a purple haired girl trudging off of the stage, a forlorn look across her face. It looks like that was Genevieve, the girl you saw – you hate to see her eliminated early, but it’s of no concern to you.

Speaking of eliminations, you look up at one of the many screens hung up. While there are no replays of the battles visible, the map of the islands is still up there (along with one, assumedly yours, highlighted in red), along with a player count.

>PLAYERS REMAINING: 94.

“Shit, six already? You’d think there’d be less.” You say aloud, causing a rather thin girl to speak up from near you.

“Some people just can’t hack it. You gotta bring your A-game or you’re fuckin’ toast!” She cackles to herself, heading off towards the stands.

You rub your eyes. It looks like you have an hour’s worth of free time. What do you want to do with it?

You stand still for a few moments, following the throngs of people filing out of the room with your eyes. If at all possible, you’d like to hang around a larger collective of people, just so you can soak up anything unexpected or catch any names. Ideally, you’d like to see if anyone’s near Penrith or Moon’s Hallow, just so you can know if you’ll be expecting them soon.

Hell, maybe you’ll be able to get an edge up on them.

Once the majority of the audience has left and the two problem players have been broken up, you jam your hands into your pockets and begin to head out of the room. Nancy has already left – it doesn’t surprise you that she’s forgotten already – and you’re sure she’ll be fine without you for the time being. As you maneuver up the stairs, the sheer sound of conversation in the other room can be heard through the door, almost reverberating in your feet.

One thing that hasn’t changed throughout the years is the “stadium feel”. People are always excited to be here, and it almost feels gratifying that you’re putting on a good performance – in this case however, you’re not even sure how you did. You don’t care too much about that though, you’ll win by any means necessary. A good performance doesn’t have to come into it.

Stepping through the door after a few other people, an infectiously jolly air awaits you. The hallway is like a large ring, and rather than having individual carts set up, it appears that there are stores built into the walls with either booths or outside tables. You suppose that’d make it easy for any business to rent out a space, considering the only interior area are the kitchens themselves. The scent of fried food is overwhelming, and you can’t help but feel your stomach rumble at it.

“Well, might as well grab some food as I check my phone.” You murmur, walking around a bit and gazing at the various shops. There are quite a bit to choose from, after all – not only that, but there appears to be a few accessory and clothing stores set up. Judging by the looks of it, people are buying things there en masse.

You already have all the clothes you need at home, though. What shop do you want to go to, therefore retroactively deciding what type of fast food is your favorite?

Hard choices are abound in the life of Orion Jasper.

You debate getting some actual breakfast, or maybe even a nice steak and salad at one of the fancier options in the stadium, however you know that one thing can’t be beat. The taste of a juicy burger and fries after a long day of not doing anything whatsoever. You feel your mouth watering just thinking about it, and you automatically begin walking towards Digital Eats, a chain fast food place that’s been making the rounds for the past four years or so.

It is genuinely a wonder that you’re as rail thin as you are. There was a time where Drifter described you as a scientific anomaly, and you responded by throwing a fry at her forehead.

The place has quite a line standing there, and many of the tables are inhabited by people who are eagerly chatting about the display they witnessed. Some speak of two users named Raider and Yuletide having an epic battle at this early stage, some talk of a burgeoning romance between a player and NPC, and precisely none of them seem to be talking about you.

Good, that suits you just fine. You may not have read Twitter yet, but the less people talking about you, the more your actions are unknown to the crowd. You’re surprised that the organizers haven’t prohibited people from looking at Twitter, but you’ll definitely take advantage of it.

Eventually, you’re able to secure a big burger, a side of fries, and a drink. You sit yourself as far back into the corner as you can. You look down at it and absorb the beauty of the layman’s meal – two juicy patties, two toasted buns (the only fast food place you’ve seen that does that), and all the fixings you could ever hope to have on such a delicious burger.

You take a bite, and you almost shed a tear.

Putting that aside, your eyes travel to the long circular hallway where people are still milling about. There are several interactive screens plastered to the wall, advertising a hell of a lot of products – you wonder how much that product placement costed – along with wide screens lining the entire upper wall. Although they seem to be muted, it appears to be showing a set of commentators excitedly discussing the first half, along with video footage of some of the moments.

“Wonder why they kept it muted, not like it’d be any louder than the crowd.” You grouse to yourself, taking a sip of your root beer. While fixings may be ambiguous, people who don’t get root beer with their burgers are animals – everyone knows that.

Leaning back in the chair and propping your feet up on the set across from you, you pull out your phone and bring up the handy, dandy Twitter app. You’d normally be concerned due to not knowing their screennames, but you know for a fact that on the official website, your full names are mandatorily displayed unless otherwise requested. Knowing Nancy, she’s probably glad to disclose details, and Clay probably did what was suggested.

Normally you’re not one for assumptions, but you feel like you know these two well enough to pin that down.

First, you type the following into the search bar.

>Search Query: Nancy

A moment passes, and then quite a few results pop up – a lot of which are only from a short time ago, meaning that your assumption was correct.

>@solace1253: DID YOU NANCY PUNCH THE SHIT OUT OF TERMINAL LOL WHAT A PUSSY #InfiniteSkies #nutuporshutup #magicalsquad

>@a1ab4st3r: @MagicOfSkies just won my heart, and many others! This tournament is off to a grand start! 1-0 for Nancy! Take it home, girl! #InfiniteSkies

>@momomomo: that was a fucking fluke. gtfo nancy you don’t belong here #infiniteskies

Looks like she has her fair share of followers and naysayers. You do know the name Terminal, however, as he’s a fairly prominent streamer in the community from what you’ve heard. Judging by this, Nancy must have beat him very early on. Good for her.

Putting that matter aside, however, you type in Clay’s name next.

>Search Query: Clay

It takes a few seconds to load this time, however a few responses do come up. Most of them are mentioning sculpting clay, or clay quality, but there is only one from very recently – he must not have put his name into the website like you had thought, so color you surprised on that one.

>@vermillionfan1: you can do it clay! show them you’re not a coward! #InfiniteSkies

Heh, at least he seems to have one fan out there. Either he’s not been playing notably, his real name is withheld from the competition, or he just has one real die hard fan that found out his name. Could be creepy, could be cute. Either way, it would appear that neither have died yet, which sets your mind at ease.

>Investigate some footage of the match – having some entertainment with your burger is always nice.
>Open up the mines and see what comes up when you put in your username.
>Look up the name Penrith or Moon’s Hallow – maybe some players have been sighted near there.

With your curiosity sated, the next order of business is scoping out the area around you. You may have only just learned that the starting village was Moon’s Hallow and the cursed town was Penrith, but that’s more than enough for you to see if any players are inbound.

>Search Query: Moon’s Hallow

>@cardinalAbrogation: jesus, a lot of people in moon’s hallow, eh? four people went through there already! Surprised there weren’t any PvP fights around there kek #InfiniteSkies
>>@bluemetal: u use there a lot lmao @cardinalAbrogration
>>>@cardinalAbrogation: fuck off cunt @bluemetal

>@whiskeyncoke: anybody else find that blacksmith in moon’s hallow kinda cute tho? #InfiniteSkies #BL

>@jemevieve: I apologize to all of my friends and fans who I disappointed by losing today. I thought escorting Tina through Moon’s Hallow would be a wise decision, but it wasn’t. I will do better next time. #InfiniteSkies #Reflection

Your brow furrows – four people went through the town you started in? You started there, Genevieve was on the road from there, but the two others are entirely accounted for. They could have also started there but bailed before you, or they could have passed from another direction. You were out of the town for quite a period of time, so it’s unknown to you.

“Don’t like that one bit.” You sip your root beer thoughtfully, keying in your next term.

>Search Query: Penrith

>@TournamentTrackerNews: Player #69 status – en route to Penrith w/ NPC. #InfiniteSkies

>@theocraticstrings: Really wondering what’s up with Penrith! Hope that Ur1el can get to the bottom of it… #InfiniteSkies

>@elfloverxXX: lololololololol penrith gonna be a hot spot soon huh? second half gon be SPICY CAN I GET A WHAT #InfiniteSkies
>>@localyokel: what @elfloverxXX
>>>elfloverxXX: you know whats up haha @localyokel

Twitter banter aside, you make a mental note of two things. The first of which being that someone named Ur1el is heading to Penrith, and it’s unknown if he’s there or not. Second, a user believes that the town will be a hot spot soon enough. This would make sense, considering it’s a port town – you run a hand through your hair and sigh. There goes you getting a potential easy start.

You look down at the food in front of you and realize that you’ve eaten your order in the midst of browsing. The food sits well in your stomach, and you top off your root beer as you do. You’re about to dive further down the rabbit hole, but you realize that you have other stuff on the agenda, so you rise up from your seat.

Gathering some information by eavesdropping is a time honored tradition, really.

(Heading off for the evening because brain is fried, had a long day today. Typos are rampant, lol. Thank you very much for coming around to read, and I hope you had a great time! I’ll be back to run a full session tomorrow. Have a great night, everyone! See you all soon.)

Now that you’ve had part of your curiosity sated, you make your way back over to the door you came from. This time as you walk, a few people lingering about give you a few waves, and a pat on the back. As soon as you look them in the eyes, though, they immediately turn away and start hurriedly chattering to the people near them.

Man, resting bitch face is the ultimate curse. Good thing you didn’t want to socialize all that much to begin with.

You move through the door, and surprisingly, the sound of conversation isn’t very prevalent in here. People must be busy either stuffing their faces, catching up on news broadcasts, or eagerly chatting with onlookers about the latest events. Either way, it’s left the crowd with only small groups, and a small smattering of players spread across the stage.

As you make your way down once more, you catch some conversation as you walk back over to your pod, yawning as you do.

“Got put on the capital island right off the bat! Man, it’s cozy~!” A man with blonde hair and a buttoned shirt brags, shooting a smirk towards two pudgy men. “I really must be the luckiest, huh~? Already working on currying local favor…man, if only there were a politics game made by Chrysanthemum~!”

You’re instantly irritated by his airy tone, but manage to hide it as you make your way over to your pod. You are now aware that someone’s making waves in the capital, and if his avatar is similar to how he looks IRL, you’ll have a face to look out for.

On the way over to the pod, your attention is caught by someone lightly clearing their throat. Looking over to your left, you spot a familiar person coming into view – Clay, who looks remarkably calmer compared to earlier.

“H-Hey there, Orion. How goes it?”

“Well enough. You don’t look like you’re about to puke anymore.”

“Think I just needed to start playing. Still don’t like the crowd, but hey, what can you do?” He chuckles weakly, slouching as he leans against your pod with his hands in his pockets. “How’d your start go?”

>”Well enough. How about you?” Keep your cards close enough while getting information.

“Well, to be honest, it’s pretty shit. I’m on the first sinking island, and I only just got to a place where I can get off of it.” You shrug your shoulders and cross your arms. “Doesn’t help that it’s probably going to be a hot spot, according to Twitter.”

“You’ve been doing your research, huh?” Clay chuckles, before beckoning you closer to him. You stare at him weirdly for a moment and oblige, to which he brings himself closer to your ear.

“The ports are level gated. You need to be a certain one to get off the island – I’ve been staying in a city called New Dawn, and the gate for me to get off is level 15. Must mean I’m pretty high in the island pecking order, but I just thought you should know.”

He draws away from you and gives you a small smile, awkwardly putting his hands in his pockets once more.

“Thanks for the information, but you didn’t have to give me that. I would have found out on my own.” You state simply, turning away from him and eyeing the room. You spot more players and the audience filtering in, laughing jollily and chattering excitedly respectively.

“Well, you sorta helped me get over my fears, so it’s the least I could do.” He scratches the back of his head. “I’ve been able to keep my head down and grind, but you don’t have that opportunity, so I just wanted to make sure you knew what you’re up against.”

Damn, that’s a pretty nice thing to do. You’ll remember that.

“So, since I’m not the only one sharing, what have you been up to? Saw you had a fan on Twitter, so whatever you’re doing, it must be right.” You smirk at the boy, who immediately looks surprised and then blushes. Brushing his hair out of his face, he hurriedly clears his throat and begins to recount what he’s been up to.

“Well, uh, I spawned in New Dawn, and I found a place that’d let me live with them in exchange for protection. I’m up above an old tile shop. Things have been going alright, but I’ve run into a little problem – I don’t know how many are in New Dawn, but I know for sure that there’s a player present. There have been a few encounters, but none turned lethal – she’s just been trying to intimidate me, I think.” He scratches his cheek.

“At least you know she’s there, so all you gotta do is get stronger than her and kill her, or take her by surprise, yeah?” You say to him.

“Sure, but I’d need to be able to catch her first. I’ve tried following her, but it’s like she vanishes every time. It’s really creepy, haha.”

“Do you have a reliable source of grinding nearby? Just do it faster than her and you should be golden.”

“There’s some stuff in the sewers, and I have racked up a few quests to work on, but I’m cautiously scoping all of them out first. New Dawn’s a big city, and a lot of the stuff is delivering things or settling petty feuds.”

“Sounds boring as hell.”

“I much prefer it this way,” The boy laughs. “At least I can take it slow this way. You said you’re on the way to a port city? How’d that come about?”

“Sounded like a quest opportunity so I took it. Currently escorting an NPC, though.”

Clay looks surprised.

“You don’t seem the type to do escort missions.”

>”They’re not so bad, if the NPC is good enough company. Jury’s still out on that, though.”

“Hey, they can be pretty rewarding sometimes, especially with the right escort. I won’t deny that they can be pretty shit, bur when it’s indicative of a bigger quest, I’ll absolutely jump on that. Penrith’s apparently cursed – people are getting sick, and she’s from there. Sounds like a good problem to work on for eight hours!” You jab Clay in the side with your elbow.

“A cursed village, huh? Man, they always throw new things at us, huh? This game’s always evolving…” Clay murmurs to himself, bringing a hand to his chin.

You’re brought out of your quiet musings by the sound of a loud beep resonating throughout the area, followed by a mechanical voice being played through the audio systems.

“WARNING! Five minutes of break time remain. Please make your way back to your seats and pods, as the game will resume in five minutes. Thank you.”

Damn, that break passed real quickly, although it was definitely profitable for you. Information is the best weapon you could have, and now you’re aware that several people have been sighted around Moon’s Hallow, and at least one player is inbound to Penrith other than you. Not only that, but you have some knowledge of the happenings in New Dawn, which may come into play later in the match.

“I’m gonna head over to my pod, Orion. It was nice chatting with you!” He bows his head and begins making his way to his own station.

“Same to you. Good luck out there!”

You’re then left alone in the middle of a swirling vortex of noise as even more people filter into the room. Feeling the beginnings of a headache coming on, you’re left with only a short time to exploit your break.

As much as I want to listen in on other players, fans of the game are more forthcoming with info. Mostly because they don't expect players to use it or even read it. That or rival fans might just spew info to try and give their favorites an advantage. We can use that for our own gain seeing as we're not well known.

You’re aware that players are more likely to speak in vague jargon, whereas the fans are more than happy to discuss whatever crosses their mind in a forum where they’re free to do so. At least you’re able to count on the fans to speak everything off the top of the dome.

What search tag would you like to use in your pursuits?

Wincing again as the noise continues to climb, you busy yourself with typing Penrith back into the search bar, taking a moment to climb into your pod and longue as you do. Hell, if you’re gonna be on your phone, you might as well be somewhat comfortable!

>Search Query: Penrith.

There we go, that’s some good information. It seems that they’re favoring ports to have increments of three, which would line up with Clay saying that New Dawn’s was 15. If this is the truth and not just some coincidence, it would appear that you’re already halfway there! Level 2 of 3 isn’t bad at all. You breathe a sigh of relief, and put your phone back into your pocket, closing your eyes as you do.

“Heya!” A voice says loudly next to your head, causing you to violently jerk away in sudden shock. You hear a very girlish cackle, and you open your eyes to see Nancy leaning over you, her metallic arms folded on your pod. “Was lookin’ for you earlier, you know! Didn’t sis say to keep an eye on me?”

“I never intended to do that in the first place, Nancy. I was using her for a ride.” You glare harshly at the girl, almost tempted to shove her off of your pod. “Drifter can bite me – she doesn’t even bother to keep in contact anymore, prickly old bitch.”

“Hey! I’ll tell her you said that, you know. Why’re you so mad all of a sudden? Did I really scare you that bad?”

“I have never been scared once in my entire life.”

You stare into Nancy’s eyes as you say this, trying to project an aura of honesty towards the young woman. She looks almost taken aback by the intensity of your gaze, eyes widening as she considers your words. You can almost picture the way she wants to raise an arm to her chin to ponder them, to assimilate them, to truly integrate the false truth into her mind. By god, it is such an intimate moment with this girl you’ve just met that you hardly know what to do with yourself.

“That’s a load of horse apples, Orion.”

“Yeah, that’s fair.”

She bursts out laughing and begins pounding her fist against the pod, causing an announcer to look at her in warning. She practically doubles over and wipes a tear from her eye with her metal thumb, speaking to you between snickers.

“Oh, you’re a funny guy, Orion. Hey, have you gotten situated on your island yet? Made any good stories yet?”

“I’m on the one that’s sinking first, and no, I haven’t. Only killed bandits so far.” You absolutely refuse to give her any inkling that you’re traveling with an NPC, as you’re more than certain she’d start popping off about it.

“Aww, that’s a shame~! I’ll have you know I’m very well looked after in my area.”

“Makes it sound like you’re a prostitute.” You casually remark, making her recoil physically with shock. Before she can respond to your inflammatory words, she’s cut off by the announcer speaking into the microphone.

“LAST CALL FOR EVERYONE TO GET BACK IN HERE! All players, please report to your pods, and audience, please get back to your seats! The match begins in one minute once more!”

Nancy stands up straight and brushes her hair back, looking down at you as she begins to step away.

“I’ll let that one go, but you should really watch your mouth! I might just beat you up for it next time!”

“Whatever you say, Nancy.” You call back to the girl, crossing your arms and beginning to brainstorm before she’s even out of your sight. Knowing that it would be best to have a game plan right off the bat. What would you like to do when you’re back in the game?

>Immediately information gather around Penrith, whether it be for quests or otherwise. You’d like to know the details of this curse.
>Try and see if there are any monsters lingering around the area. You might not need the quest in order to reach level 3 overall.

You know that talking to Tina’s dad could be nothing but a boon for you. For one, you’ll be able to tell him that you brought his daughter home safe, meaning that you can get a reward. For two, he actually has the curse/virus, meaning that you can get more information from him than you would second-hand. For three, maybe you’ll get some positive attention from the village for doing it in the first place.

You crack your knuckles – all you need to do in order to get off the island is play it as safely as you can from this point onward. Easier said than done, with a player apparently inbound, but you’ll manage. That $500,000 will be all yours.

Leaning back fully into your pod’s chair, you wait until all of the players take their places back in their pods, and you fully tune out anything that the announcer is saying. From your position in the stage, you can spot the majority of the crowd responding loudly to the going’s on, and you even catch a few trying their best to get anyone’s attention.

It reminds you of someone from a long time ago.

Seconds later, you feel your mind being drawn back into the machine, and your physical body is out like a light.

When you come to inside the virtual world once more, you’re surprised to feel warmth wrapped firmly around your body. You’re laying down, and on something incredibly firm, enough to make you slightly uncomfortable. You find yourself instinctually groaning, raising a hand up to rub at your face – your body is aching like a motherfucker from all the exertion earlier.

“O-Oh, you’re awake!”

You can hear that Tina’s spoken to you just now, and from the sound of it, she’s somewhere off to your left. Her tone is a mixture of relief, worry, and a strange manic energy. Even though your eyes are shut, you can picture her sandy blonde hair being incredibly frazzled.

Is it just me or did Wolfgang leave a big impression on Orange? Was he a mentor figure to us back in our Warscape days? Or is cirno just giving us call backs for fun?

Either way it's pretty interesting. Side question, How does the political victory work exactly? It seems like it's too much of a slow roll for it to be viable if players are dying quickly in a 4 hour time frame or they're murdering npcs. How is it balanced? This is more out of lore junkie perspective so if it's not something we should know then feel free not to answer.

>>4298725
With Wolfgang suddenly on the news after everything that happened over the past week or two, he just happens to be on Orange's mind at the current moment - at the end of the day, all of them were close friends, even if from Wolfgang's perspective, Orange was a bit of a reclusive sort. All of Genesys could be considered a mentor figure to Wolfgang in different ways during that period!

Also, callbacks are always fun.

Also, in regards to a political victory, it's much more feasible in a four hour time frame, believe it or not. This is a huge event with multiple islands, however in regular Infinite Skies gameplay, it's one big landmass where things are much more bunched together. Navigation between towns in the regular game mode is much easier, therefore allowing more opportunity to gain favor due to easier transportation.

Murdering NPCs is precisely why it's regarded as the most difficult method to win by, because there are players who simply just raze villages in order to loot them. It's a slow form of victory, but it's one that proves rewarding for those who like the game's storytelling, or for those wanting a particularly hard challenge.

Hope this was able to answer things, apologies if I was unclear! Thank you very much for asking your questions!
>>
>>4298743
Oh no. You were pretty clear in your first explanation and I assume had we decided to go for the political victory you'd have explained it with these details. I just love hearing about in universe mechanics and details so thanks for taking the time to write it out. I think the call backs are cool. They help show that despite Orion's reclusive nature he still felt close to his team without him openly saying it. Maybe someday he and Wolfgang will team up again for some third video game tourney due to shenanigans. Awesome writing!

“Where the fuck am I?” You immediately say to the girl, opening your eyes and throwing off the blanket that’s around you. Patting yourself down, you notice that your weapons aren’t on you, and that’s enough for you to surge out of bed and whirl your head around in a daze. Snatching up the first solid thing you see – a weathered candlestick – you hold it out in front of you nervously.

“C-Calm down! You’re safe, don’t worry, I had to drag you—put the candlestick down, okay?!” Tina pokes her head from around a corner, raising her hands up when she sees you’re holding the thing. “Your stuff is fine, it’s over there!”

She points to the right of you, and you slowly turn your head to follow her finger. As she says, all of your belongings other than your clothes have been taken off, and are all propped up against the corner of the small room.

Giving the area a once over, you find that you’re in what appears to be a very small bedroom. The walls are made of stone and the ground is uncovered, a few off colored rugs thrown over it to mitigate the dirt on one’s feet. The bed you’re on looks shoddily made, even if the blanket was pleasantly warm, and you can see that other than a small wooden cupboard in the corner and a dull grey curtain draped over a window, this room is entirely bare.

Bringing your eyes back over to Tina, she looks at you with no small amount of fear. She had apparently been looking out of the entrance to the room, as you can spot a sliver of the door from behind the small stretch of wall.

“Explain. Now.”

“You just…passed out in the street on the way to the town! It was bizarre! I had to haul you all the way back over here!”

“Are we in your home?”

“N-No, that’s…well, that’s the weird part.” Tina falls silent, crossing her arms and ducking out of sight once more. You frown and slowly lower the candlestick back onto the cupboard, allowing your heart rate to calm down before making any actions.

>Get yourself re-equipped before anything – you’d feel much safer with your armaments near.
>Go and look out of the window – see what the interior of the town looks like now that you’re here.

Grumbling to yourself and rubbing your eyes, you circle around the bed and make your way to the opposite corner. Grabbing your weapons and quiver, you begin to process of making sure that everything is sufficiently tied down to your body.

As you do so, you’re certain to check your weapons to an excruciating amount of detail. You want to be sure that your weapons are imperfection free, as if you suddenly passed out in the street, you have no idea what the fuck happened over the course of the last hour. Your bow seems fine, your sword seems fine, and you’re not even missing any arrows. The last thing you check is your gold pouch, which also seems to be untampered with.

Looks like you’re back up to snuff, although you may have to look into getting some proper armor. Your tunic is still torn from your skirmish with the bandits, and the left sleeve is hardly attached, and still very much covered with blood.

Lets get a grasp on the situation. Also standard rpg rules probably don't apply here so we can't just got rifling though everyone's things. The AI acts like real people and if rep can go up then it can go down and last thing we need is the entire town running us out or ratting us out to other players because we're being assholes to npcs.

After doing a triple check to make sure your items haven’t been tampered with at all, you cast a glance towards the cupboard. There is an inkling of desire to loot it, but you don’t even know who’s house this is, so petty thievery isn’t on the agenda for you. You’d rather not have to explain yourself to anyone.

“Tina, what’s going on?” You walk over to the girl, who’s nervously looking through a small window inset in a wooden door. When you approach, she raises a finger to shoosh you, standing up on her tip toes in order to see through the small square. “No, I’m not going to shush. The fuck is happening?”

She glances over in irritation, but sighs lightly, turning to regard you.

“Something weird’s happening in town. As soon as I brought you through, one of the ladies in this communal home forced me in here, saying that it’s not safe in the streets.” Tina starts fiddling with her hair nervously. “I thought something was weird when the cordon didn’t seem to be in place, but the town looked dead when I walked in…and then there was screaming, and then I was brought in here, and then—”

“Calm down, Tina. Is your father in this area?”

“N-No, he’s a fisherman, so we get our own house…this is where a lot of the ladies stay, along with anyone too old to not take care of themselves. He’s all the way across town, these are the slums.”

You click your tongue.

>Go back to the window and see if you can see anything going on in the town.

Comments, questions, concerns, and compliments fuel the QM machine – making the quest better is my number one goal. See you all tomorrow for some more town exploration! Have a great night, anons, and I hope you’re doing well.)

You sigh and move over to the window, immediately seeing that Tina isn’t going to be a good source of information on this. If the townsfolk literally forced her in here for protection, then remaining here is the wisest course of action – thankfully, this window offers some insight into this cursed city. Reaching forward, you tear off the dull grey curtains and peek into the outside world.

The city seems silent, even through glass.

The sky above has turned completely grey in your time asleep, blotting out the sun and casting a melancholy filter across the surroundings. There are barely any lights to be found in visible windows, and in some, you spot hands hurriedly drawing the curtains shut. In the distance, you can see the ocean water moving tumultuously, crashing against the ancient ships and wooden docks.

There is not a single guard in sight. There is not a single person outside. The air feels stagnant, even in here.

A deep chill runs down your spine, and you find yourself grimacing at the highly unsettling sight.

Just as you’re about to close the curtains yourself, you’re startled by the sound of heavy pounding against the front door, causing the timid Tina to jump away from it in shock.

“OPEN UP!” A male voice practically screams, sounding on the verge of hysteria. “PLEASE, ANYONE, PLEASE! I NEED HELP!”

Your hand automatically goes to your sword, and you step forward. If he keeps pounding on the door, it won’t matter if you tell him to leave, he’ll break the fucker open.

>Move Tina back and hold the door shut silently – nobody’s coming in here.
>Brace yourself against the door and look through the peephole – you want to see who this is.

You pull the sword fully from its sheathe and move Tina back, pressing your entire weight against the door and holding the knob, which is just beginning to move from the man tampering with it. Gritting your teeth, you turn back to Tina.

“Get back.” You say under your breath, to which she hurriedly complies by disappearing around the corner. When you’re certain she’s not visible from the door anymore, you turn to address the man outside while looking through the window.

“Identify yourself!” You yell from your position, squinting your eyes in order to see through the glass. “If you don’t, you’re not getting in.”

The man doesn’t respond as he keeps pounding on the door, voice shifting to actual screams as he tries his damndest to get in. After a few moments, he finally comes to view in the window, and the sight makes your blood run cold.

He must have been middle-aged. Tangled locks of blonde hair tumble down the man’s hunched shoulders, and what’s visible of his skin is deeply tanned. The rest of his face, however, looks as if it has been burst open from the inside. Fleshy strips hang from the bone, still bleeding, and you can spot what appears to be a black growth protruding from a ruined, bloody eye socket.

The sight almost makes you want to vomit. What the fuck?

“Who is it? What’s going on?!” You vaguely process Tina calling from somewhere behind you.

“Tina! Grab that fucking cupboard!” You don’t bother keeping your voice down, flinching as the man begins to punch the door. The heavy thuds send shockwaves through your body, and it takes all you have to keep your place as you hear Tina scramble around behind you.

“What’s going on, Orion?!” She asks again frantically.

“Something’s not right! This dude looks like a walking corpse!” You grit your teeth as the man wails on the door with all he has, his screams reverberating in your ears. If this is what it’s like on the streets right now, you can completely understand why Tina was forced in here – is this what the city guards are dealing with? Is this a result of the curse? Is this a fucked up spell?

You just don’t know. All that you’re concerned with is keeping safe.

Just as you hear the sound of Tina finally dragging the cupboard across the ground, you’re taken off guard when you hear the sound of something cracking following the latest punch. Looking up at the window, you’re shocked to see the man has moved on to pounding against it with his fists, attempting to break the glass in order to gain access.

Your first instinct is to dodge the incoming blow, but you’re well aware that moving away from this door means that you’ll be opening yourself up to further, more lethal attacks from this abomination. It’s all you can do to stay stalwart, especially when the glass is broken and you feel a very solid fist collide with your jaw.

The vibrations nearly send you off your feet alone. You can feel half of your teeth jostled from the sheer force of the punch, and you can feel something warm dripping down your chin – your cheek must have been cut by one of your teeth, but you can’t feel it due to the immense amount of pain coursing through the side of your head.

This dude hits like a fucking truck, and you find yourself growing angry.

>HP: 78/125 (-20)

“Hurry the fuck up, Tina!” You yell, trying to move your head out of the way as he keeps attempting to get his hand through the hole. The next blow in takes some of the window frame along with it, and you swing your sword up, managing to land a blow on his wrist – although this doesn’t seem to faze the beast in the slightest.

“I’m trying – this thing is really heavy!” The exertion is clear in her voice, and you instinctually curse. If this man keeps wailing on the door, either you’ll go down, or the door will.

>Keep your place – you won’t buckle under this pressure, all you need is a little more time.
>Move away from the door and assist Tina – it poses risk, but it’ll be an extra barrier for the man.
>Draw your arm back and attempt to stab the man through the window – gotta take what you can get.

You glance over your shoulder and see that Tina is slowly making her way around the corner, pushing against the back of the cupboard with all her might. She’s really trying her hardest to get the fucking thing over for a barricade, so you renew your efforts in trying to keep the door up. You doubt that there’s long before the man starts physically punching through the door, but all you need is a few seconds just so you can make a fucking plan to stop him.

“Man, if there were any guards around, maybe shit like this would be solved!” You murmur to yourself in the midst of the man screaming, the image of his ruined, fleshy face practically burned into your memory. You can’t recall an instance of encountering something this fucked up on the devs behalf – you’ve seen some shock factor on the behalf of the players, but never something like this from the fucking developers.

You’re really hoping the rest of the competition won’t be like this, otherwise you may just end up with nightmares.

The ruined corpse is still swinging at the door with all his might, and it’s only now that the wood itself begins to buckle. Little partitions are forming in the wake of his fists, and you can spot splinters flaking off under the weight of his assault. You grimace as you nervously glance towards Tina – you only need a few seconds to get your bearings and make a plan, that’s all you need.

CRACK!

This one sounds much larger than before, and you’re left attempting to dodge another sudden blow.

(Going to head off and take a nap for a little while – woke up at around 6 originally, so I’m tired as hell. Be back soon, hope you guys are doing great today!)

You immediately take your hands off the door as soon as you feel air rushing through the bottom portion, stepping back and catching the large boot that’s stuck through the wood. You hear Tina shriek in surprise, but you keep it held in place. The man tries to withdraw his foot, but can’t, and no matter how he tries to flail it around, he cannot escape your grip.

“Keep pushing, Tina!” You call, removing a hand from the boot and picking up your discarded sword. Raising an arm up, you drive the blade directly through the knee, causing the man to scream louder. Wincing at the sheer volume, you rip out the blade and stab him once more through the ankle, and then through the boot itself. Removing the now bloodied sword from the man, you shove with all your might and push his leg out of the hole.

Good timing, too. Tina’s right behind you.

Stepping away from the door, you pivot and push the cupboard against the broken wood with all your might. You try to engineer it so part of it is snagged on the doorknob, making it that much harder for the door to be forced open the natural way. Sure, he now seems hellbent in busting through it rather than breaking in, but either way, he has a newer and thicker obstacle to deal with.

“Holy shit, what the fuck is that!?” Tina is on the verge of hysterics, and it’s all you can do to catch your breath as the pounding renews vigorously. You try to stretch your aching arms, and rub the side of your face – hell, it feels like all of your teeth have been knocked loose.

“We need to make a plan.” You cut her off, a bead of sweat rolling down your brow as you hear the door crack again. “I can explain later, but we don’t have a lot of time. You were absolutely on the money – something’s not right in this town. Don’t know what the fuck it was like before, but that’s not normal.”

What would you like to do?

The temptation to hand a weapon off to Tina is strong. You’re not sure how good she is at using an actual weapon, but you bet that she has some form of strength, considering she hauled you all the way here and is a fisherman’s daughter. The fact that’s facing you however, is that this man can punch through solid wood, and is apparently fixated on getting in and fighting you. Due to you wanting to keep Tina safe, the best option is to run for now.

“Tina, does that window open?” You ask the girl, already moving over and running your fingers around the edges, looking for a lock of some sort.

“I-I don’t know?”

“Well, we don’t have the time to find out.” Drawing a fist back, you echo your opponent from only a minute ago and punch the glass with all your might, sending the thing right out of it’s frame. In the distance, you can see a few people open their curtains in surprise, but you pay them no heed.

“Up and over, girl. We have to get the fuck out of dodge.” You don’t wait for her to comply, instead walking over and grabbing her by the wrists, bringing her over and lightly pushing her against the window sill. Despite looking at you with abject terror, she begins to hoist herself over the edge, picking up the hem of her frilly dress in order to do so.

As soon as her feet touch the ground, you hear an ear-piercing crack as the door gives under the corpse-like man, and his screams are doubled in intensity now that he’s actually in the room. The cupboard is still in his way, thankfully, so you immediately throw yourself out the window and onto the cold dirt.

This town seems to not have any paving or stone in any manner, instead favoring setting their buildings on dirt foundations. You’re not sure how profitable that is in the long run, but as this is a generated video game, you really can’t muster the effort to critique them on poor land expansion decisions. Instead, you pull Tina by the arm down the street as you break out in a dead sprint, head pivoting around as you search for any signs of life.

The man’s manic screams follow you, even if you’ve left him far behind. In the distance, you can hear the sound of steel clashing, and more screams.

Rain begins to fall.

>Find a dark alleyway to take cover in – you can take stock of what you know, and figure out a plan.
>Have Tina lead you directly to her father’s house – it’s somewhere potentially safe and familiar to her.

Looking around the empty streets, you spot a stack of boxes piled high against a building. From what you can tell, it looks like buildings are built relatively close together, meaning that you can hop in-between them, leading to reconnaissance in a way that won’t be risking your skin.

“Feel like doing some climbing, Tina?” You ask sarcastically, walking over to the boxes and hopping up to the second in one smooth motion.

“I feel like knowing what’s going on,” she grumbles, shooting you a nasty glare as she scales the boxes behind you. When you reach the top, the cool breeze takes you off guard, and you immediately gaze around the town from your position.

The town seems to follow the overall structure of being in a cross shape – the entrance you came through forms the base and runs alongside the shore line, one wing seems to be supported by docks, the other is built in-land and looks slightly better than the are you’re in currently, and the farthest bit appears to have a manor that’s gated off.

In the middle of the junction, there is a fire that’s being suppressed by the rain. Your eyes aren’t all-seeing, but you can spot quite a few figures moving around there and the striking of steel against steel. People are rushing over from the ocean with something cradled in their arms – probably buckets – and from here, the distant screaming can be heard more clearly.

“Um…” The girl behind you has a quivering voice, and she almost looks like a drowned cat when she steps forward to look for herself. “Can you tell me what’s going on now?”

“Jeez, you’re still on about that? The guy who was trying to bust in hardly had a face – not sure what caused it, but I’m betting it’s either your curse, or something more sinister. Could have been lying dormant until now.” You muse aloud to yourself, however you notice the girl becoming more downtrodden as you continue speaking.

“My…but, my father, he’s…he’s all alone, and he’s infected, so what if…”

Ah, fuck. You had forgotten.

Tina’s father is infected, and if the curse really is the reason behind it, then it’s likely to assume that he may have followed in that man’s footsteps. You can’t make out what the guard is dealing with from here, but it’s completely understandable that she’d be rattled, what with how things seem to look.

>Try and reassure her – if her dad lasted until she left, maybe he’s still fine, and you don’t know if it’s the curse yet.
>Be honest – there’s a good likelihood of it being related, and she needs to know that. False hope can hurt.
>Ask her if she wants to go to her father’s house from here to check – you’ll be able to protect her if things are bad.
>Go closer to the conflict and scope out exactly what’s gone down – from up here, you should be safe if you’re stealthy.

“We can figure out what’s happened if we get a little closer. Just a little longer, and we’ll be able to figure things out. I get that it’s stressful, but we need to focus on what we can directly do, rather than otherwise. Do you get me?” You walk in front of the girl and turn to face her. You really aren’t good at emotional pep talks, so you decide to focus on logic. “No matter what happens, we need to keep moving forward. I’m going to get closer to that mess – it’s up to you if you want to follow me or not.”

“I…I think I’ll stick with you.” She smiles weakly. “You’re the closest thing to protection in this city, even if you don’t seem to have a heart.”

You’ve heard far worse than that in your years of playing this game. It’ll take a lot more than that to even sting.

Turning on your heel, you gauge the distance between the rooftops, and embark on a dead sprint, jumping across and sticking the landing. Tina follows suit, and you catch her by her wrists so she doesn’t tumble down into the street. The process remains the same all the way to the junction – the only difference is the growing volume of the screaming.

Once you’re close enough to make out detail, you find some half-cover to secure both yourself and Tina behind, peeking over the edge as you do.

While the rain is a slight mitigation, the place reeks of death and rot. Blood is covering the ground and the sides of buildings in wide arcs, likely from slashing wounds. You can spot several guards milling about the area, chattering to each other as they haul pairs of corpses to the fire. Several of them look wrong – dark red muscle is exposed to the air, skin having long since fallen from their frames. Where veins should have been lie dark black cracks, similar in color to the protrusion extending from the earlier man’s face.

“I think I’m gonna be sick…” Tina grouses from her position, gripping her arms tightly.

There are a subsection of guards who are tending to the fire – now that you’re closer, it appears to have been started intentionally, definitely in order to dispose of the corpses. You can see a pile of them already inside – it looks like there’s been a genocide here.

>Try to look around for any additional oddities – casing the area is always good.

You close your eyes and try to listen as well as you can despite the rain and Tina’s murmurs of discontent. It’s progressed beyond the drizzle into a proper downpour, the gentle sound of rain pounding against the dirt clashing with the crackling of flames in front of you.

As you attempt to listen to the muffled conversation between men, you can’t seem to make out anything – all you can tell is that they’re burning the bodies, presumedly so whatever is infecting them doesn’t spread to the rest of the populace. There are five overall in the square currently, although three have left to go get more water. Three of them are armed with swords, one with a pike, and one with a bow.

“Fuck, it had to start raining, didn’t it.” You curse to yourself, turning to Tina. “Can hardly hear what they’re saying.”

“It is raining a lot.” She comments, rubbing her arms due to the cold. “Might get sick at this rate, haha.”

You know that you’re physically unable to get sick in this game, but it wouldn’t be the same for her. Just as you’re pondering your next move, you’re taken off guard by a sudden sensation across your face.

Something hits you right in the middle of the forehead. Nothing bladed or harmful, but just…something. It felt so different from the rain that it physically took you aback, and as you go to scan the junction, you find the source immediately.

You are currently at the south-east area of the place, perched at the corner of the building that resides there. Similarly, there are others at the other three corners, and in the north-east one, somebody is perched there in full view.

Not many details about the person stand out to you. They appear to be wearing a heavy cloak, and something that’s obscuring their identity. Their hand is still outstretched towards you, showing that they must be the perpetrator of throwing whatever it was at you.

When they see that they have your attention, they raise an arm up in greeting, waving.

You try to lean forward in order to see more of the person, but all details are obscured by a thick, heavy cloak. Looking down quickly in an attempt to search for whatever they threw at you, you immediately see the cause – a small ball bearing, only barely visible in the rain due to the firelight in the street.

Raising your eyes back towards the person, you spot that they still have their arm raised – are they waiting for an acknowledgement of some sort? All you can really muster is nodding at them, which they seem to take well, considering that they drop their arm afterwards. A moment later, you watch them stand up on their perch – wow, they look tall – and hop down into the junction behind a set of boxes.

You blink, but turn your attention to Tina, who’s also looking on with a bit of surprise.

“Do you know that guy?”

“Nope, never seen them before.”

You turn to her fully, noting how the rain has her hair matted down and her clothes sticking to her. She’s shivering at this point, vigorously rubbing her arms in an attempt to warm up even slightly. You look down at yourself and find that your clothes are in a similar state, although you don’t nearly feel the cold as much.

Looks like you might need to be a little bit faster, even if it’s annoying. Getting her someplace warm would probably do the both of you some good – both for her comfort, and for your want of no complaints.

“Tina, where’s the alchemist’s place at? Things are looking pretty bad, so we might wanna get that supposed cure done before anything else.” You nervously grip your sword. “Maybe we can use it to reverse this shit.”

A little glimmer of hope comes back into Tina’s eyes, for only a moment, and she points to the section of the town nearest to the shoreline.

“He’s over there – due to his status, he’s the only person who owns a residential building on the shore. I heard some people were trying to buy it off of him, haha…” She rambles on nervously, already standing and making her way over to the edge of the building. From your position, you can’t see anyway to cross from the rooftops, and it’s certainly too long of a distance to jump without assistance.

“Then we’re gonna have to drop down to the street and hope the guards don’t see us. Sound good to you?” You move past her and look at the wet ground, small puddles starting to form in the remnants of footprints.

“Yeah, there’s no other way.” You see her take out the vial to gaze at it longingly, before stowing it away again. “I’ll do anything to save him.”

“That’s the spirit. Let’s get the fuck out of dodge.”

Saying the words out loud does little to persuade yourself that things will be fine, but you’re committed at this point. Placing your hand on the edge, you vault yourself over and onto the ground.

You hit the ground and immediately crouch low, taking cover by one of the various buildings and keeping your eyes firmly on the guards. When you hear the sound of Tina hopping over, you catch her so she doesn’t hit the ground hard, which she looks none too pleased with.

“Get up onto the other set of buildings, I’ll watch our back.” You say to her, sheathing your sword in favor of drawing out your bow. She nods quickly and bolts as fast as she can, the rain covering her footsteps as she crosses the ground. You watch as she takes a running leap and manages to catch onto the rim of the roof, pulling herself up with no small effort.

When you can see that she’s gotten herself over, you also move across, being sure to keep an eye on the guards. As you do, you watch as more bodies are added to the pile, the stench of death only growing more pungent despite the downpour. One guard – the farthest from you – is leaning against a building, idly cradling his bow as his companions continue their attempt to control the curse further.

He’s not prepared for the hand that darts out from the shadow of the building, pulling him back and then securing an arm around the man’s windpipe. You watch as he struggles in vain, unable to call for help as a blade is shoved into his throat, and then dragged back into the shadows as soon as blood is spilled.

A moment later, you see the cloaked person from earlier make themselves visible, twirling a now bloody knife between their fingers. The figure scans the guards openly despite being in full view, and when they notice you watching from your new position, they make a nonchalant gesture with their hands.

The message is loud and clear to you.

Do what you want, but I’m doing this.

“Hey, Orion, are we leaving or what!?” You hear Tina’s impatient voice break through your thoughts, and you shake your head, scaling the side of the building yourself.

That must be the Uriel guy you heard about on Twitter. That’s about the only explanation you can think of right now.

The rest of your run across the rooftops is done in silence, the only sound in the air being that of the rain pattering off of the roof tiles. When you approach the shoreline, that sound is replaced with waves crashing against the docks, the ringing of ship bells following due to the wind.

“Where is he on the street?” You ask Tina, peering over and noting that there are quite a few buildings on the shoreline. You also see the platoon of guards gathering water have stopped to take a rest, although you can’t hear them from here.

“Just down there.” She points to a small building sandwiched in-between a shipping goods store and another unmarked building. “Hopefully he’ll let us in.”

You shake your head and hop down to street level, immediately beginning a half sprint towards the shop and hoping that Tina’s following. As much as you’d like to creep on the ship and see if you can confirm the level cap, time is of the essence, especially in evading the notice of the guard. With Uriel potentially set on killing everyone in the plaza, any distractions could prove to be much more of a problem than usual.

As you move across the storefronts, you take a look inside the shipping goods store, which appears to be empty. You can spot several bundles of rope on a front table, what appears to be shelves stacked with unidentifiable items, and a small cashier-esque table shoved in the corner. You quickly dart across the alchemist’s doorstep and try to peer through the windows on the other building, but they’re blocked with heavy curtains.

Interesting.

You glance behind you and see Tina hot on your tail, turning on her heel and knocking once on the door. A few seconds later, three more knocks, and then a final after another second. She taps her foot as she waits, and she glances at you nervously as she does.

“Something the matter?” You ask her, eyes fully trained on the group of guards.

She doesn’t respond, instead whipping her head away from you and gazing intently at the door. As soon as the knob turns and the door opens, she bolts inside, taking the tall man who opened it off guard. He looks to be middle-aged, and yet has a full head of black hair and a beard, accompanied by a dull outfit, a black apron, and gloves.

He looks after Tina, and then looks at you. A warm smile crosses his features.

“Hello. Would you like to come in? It's terribly cold outside.”

“I’d love that, thanks,” You say to the man, accepting his offer and stepping into the building. While harsh temperature isn’t something that affects a player, it doesn’t stop you from feeling some form of cold and the way your clothes are clinging to your skin. He puts a hand on your back in order to lead you in, shutting the door behind you as he does.

The shop is pretty small, yet incredibly warm, most likely due to the fact that the inside is wooden. The space in front of you stretches on in a line, and the walls around it are lined with several herbs and metals, either bunched up on shelves or hanging off of small hooks. The room is lit by a series of oil lamps, along with a flickering fireplace. As soon as the door is secured, the man (the alchemist?) steps around you, taking off his gloves and rolling up his sleeves.

“Tina! I didn’t expect you back so soon – and what are you wearing, young lady?” The man has an incredibly deep voice, and he chortles as he walks towards her.

The girl in question is huddled up next to a fireplace that is placed behind the sales counter, shivering as she tries to warm up.

“N-Nothing, I just found it.” Her teeth are chattering, and she presses her cheek against her knees as she basks in the firelight.

“Interesting. And who might you be?” The man turns around and grins, leaning against the counter while crossing his arms. “Don’t believe I’ve seen you around these parts before. If you’re looking for work, everything’s on hold because of the curse, so be wary of that.”

Slicking some of the wet hair out of your face, you step forward and stick a hand out to the man, which he takes and shakes firmly.

“Name’s Orion. Found her kidnapped by bandits, I killed them, and now we’re here.” You state plainly, causing the man to blink slowly.

“…is this gonna be a long story?”

“Yeah.”

“Good thing the store is closed. Lay it on me.”

You hop up on the sales counter, and begin the long winded tale of how you found her in the burning carriage on the road. Over the course of the discussion, you learn that the man’s name is Rowan Baxter, and he confirms that he is indeed an alchemist. He’s better known around town as an apothecary, although he’s mildly gifted in magic, and often integrates the two whenever it works best for him. When you get to the part about the vial, he fetches it from Tina, who’s been given a blanket and tea at her perch by the fire.

“Sounds like you’ve been through a lot, then. Surprised you’re still so calm about it.” Rowan remarks, dipping his finger in the liquid and tasting it. “This is definitely what I requested, though, so I’m glad they were able to procure it. I can only hope that it helps overall, although with how bad things have gotten outside, who knows at this point.”

You fall silent, crossing your arms and mulling over the events going on outside. At this rate, it almost feels like some form of a zombie apocalypse, only centralized in one area. At least the guards here seem to have the issue somewhat contained – the source of what’s causing it is still the issue, however.

“…I should probably get to work on this, huh?” Rowan says, eyeing the bottle. “Gotta make more than just this if I want to do any tests. Hey, would you do me a favor, Orion?”

You look at the man, only to see a yellow mote pop into existence above his head. The sign of a quest giver.

“Before I accept anything, I’d like to know more about this curse. I’ve heard literally nothing about it – how is it transferred? Are there theories on how it began? Has it been observed to turn bodies into fleshy husks before today? I’m more than certain you’re going to ask me to do something involving the curse, and I’m fine with that, but I need to fucking know.” You glare at the man. “Hell, we almost got flatlined by one of them in our little hidey-hole.”

“I’m…not quite certain what you mean by flatlined, but you are correct, knowledge is power.” Rowan stashes the vial in his pocket turns to face you fully. “We aren’t quite certain where it originated from, however the primary theory is that it’s something in the water. Symptoms only begin after one’s had a drink of water – it starts with a fever, and then pieces of their insides begin to rot away. I was asked to cut open one of the bodies – on the mayor’s request, don’t look at me like that – and several vital organs had melted down into black sludge.”

“Doesn’t sound pleasant.”

“You’d be right. In regards to the people walking around and trying to kill, that is something entirely new – the bodies were just that, corpses, before today. You described the one you encountered to have a black growth emerging from his eye – that could suggest that the curse is controlling them in some way, and yet we still have no valid way to tell.”

“Do you guys keep the bodies anywhere in particular? Or do you dig them graves?”

“Due to the sudden influx, we haven’t been able to dig any for fear of catching the curse ourselves. As far as I know, all afflicted bodies are stored underneath the village – the mayor had a safety room dug in case anything happened, but he started tossing the dead down there before anyone could stop him.”

“You know a lot about this,” you casually remark, causing Rowan to grin.

“I am, and I cannot stress this enough, the only medical practitioner in town. I have access to knowledge that many don’t for that reason, although it’s extremely limited in this case, as you no doubt have noticed.”

You run a hand down your face in irritation.

“Well, if that’s all you have for me, I guess that’s just how it is. Alright then, what do you want me to do?” You ask the man, already stepping away from the counter in preparation to leave. Rowan claps his hands together once, then reaching into his pocket and handing you a small knife.

“I’d like you to find one of those infected bodies and find me a sample of that black substance inside of them. It doesn’t matter if they’re alive or dead, it just needs to be infected tissue.”

You look at the knife for a moment before taking it – the blade looks sharp, and the handle is wrapped with worn leather. It’s obviously seen a lot of use.

“Man, gotta start me off with the dirty jobs? Isn’t that something you could do yourself?” You snark, testing the weight of the weapon in your hands. The man’s eyes grow serious for a moment.

“I’m not fitted for a proper fight, and I’d rather not get infected if I’m the only one available who can cure it. If you killed three men and got away from one of those things, then you’re a lot more suited to the task than I am, Orion.”

“Can’t argue with that,” you say, shrugging your shoulders. A moment later, you see a familiar menu pop into existence out of the corner of your eye.

>QUEST OFFERED!
>TITLE: A Tender Cut
>DESCRIPTION: Find one of the infected bodies and cut a strip of infected flesh for Rowan Baxter.
>REWARDS: 50 XP, 50 gold.

Yeah, that’s more typical of a starter quest. You’d like to complain about the XP gain, but you’re aware that this is likely the first in a series of quests, so it will eventually pay off for you.

There's a dude murdering things in town. The work is basically done for us. We can also just go to the guards burning bodies. They might have some infected bodies. Plus we're an archer, we can snipe any infected from the rooftops. I think we're solid for this quest.

“Sure, I can do that for you. Not a lot of effort to go and hack up a corpse or two, yeah? Last I saw, that one dude was about to start cleaning house in the square, so I might be able to start there.” You don’t mention the fact that the person you saw them kill was entirely human, but hey, maybe you’ll get lucky and all of the guards will be wiped out by the time you get back.

They also might go after you, if you’re still in the area. That wouldn’t be great, but you might be able to hold them off and score a player kill, providing they’re actually a player.

“Or you could sneak your way over to the mayor’s estate and go for the safety bunker. As far as I know, all guards have been rerouted to keep things in check around town, so there shouldn’t be any problems if you want to do things a bit more quietly.” Rowan murmurs, taking out the vial once more and walking behind the counter. “I’d be careful walking around town, though. The guards will likely give you a bit of a hassle if you’re caught.”

“Thanks for the advice.” You snark, beginning to walk towards the door. However, you’re taken off guard by something slamming into wood behind you, and you turn around to find Rowan preventing Tina from following you out.

“You aren’t going anywhere, girl. You’re lucky you don’t catch a cold from all this, so your ass is staying put, understood?” His voice is that of one used to talk to a young child. “I know you’re worried, but there’s nothing we can do right now – leave it to him.”

Tina unleashes a hell of a glare on Rowan, but slowly returns to her position by the fire place, burying her face into her knees. A second later, you spot a golden mote popping to life above her head.

Jeez, you’re practically rolling in quests, now.

You turn around and walk over to the counter once more, folding your arms across the top and leaning against it. It takes a few moments for Tina to notice that you’re looking at her, and when she does, she simply just adjusts her head and stares blankly.

“Want me to check on your dad while I’m out, I’m guessing?” You ask, causing her to stiffen slightly. Yep, right on the money – she’s been griping about it for ages, and she’s just been stopped from leaving, so that’s the only logical conclusion in your mind. She doesn’t say anything to you, however her formerly blank look is replaced with quite a bit of intent, so all you can do is chuckle.

“You know, we’ll be able to heal him if this stuff works.” Rowan chimes in, leaning the walking stick back against the wall and running a hand through his beard. “Just means we’ll be waiting longer.”

You’re very much aware that that’s not the issue at hand.

>”Yeah, but she wants some understandable peace of mind, which I can give. Where’s the place at, Tina?”
>”You’re right – getting the samples is more important right now. I can go there once I’ve gotten them to Rowan.”

(Apologies for the wait – words are a fuck.)

At the end of the day, even if she’s an AI NPC, she has the mindset of a girl understandably worried about her father. She hasn’t seen him in several days, and with everything that’s happening around town along with him being infected, it’s no doubt enough to throw her into incredible mental strain.

“Yeah, I can do that for you. She wants peace of mind – with infected acting like this, it’s only natural to want to see if he’s okay. Where’s he at?” You ask her, which makes her perk up just a little bit, although her voice is definitely more droll than it had been earlier.

“He’s in the eastern side of town. The house has a bunch of fish hooks and other stuff tied around a few posts, you can’t miss it – it’s also one of the only ones to have two floors.”

“Sounds like he has an interesting take on decoration. See you in a bit, then.”

As you walk away, you idly spot the same menu from minutes ago pop up.

“So, what’s your dad’s name, Tina? If I’m gonna be showing up at his house, might as well be polite and shit. Lemme guess, is he a John?” You chuckle to yourself as you eye the girl, who snorts at your comment.

“No. His name is Raphael.” She says, taking a sip out of a steaming mug. “If he asks why you’re there, just say that I sent you to check on him.”

“Ah, so you’d like me to tell the truth? Shocking suggestion.” You grin at her, turning to Rowan, who’s staring at the silvery liquid with an intense stare. “Hey, since you’re the town apothecary slash alchemist, do you have any healing items for sale? You never know what’ll happen in the great beyond.”

Rowan’s brown eyes flicker over to you, a small smile coming across his face.

“I don’t have any potions – part of the reason we’re in this mess is because we ran out – but I have some more above board means such as bandages, along with other things you may find of note.”

You aren’t very worried about that. A perk of this game is that wounds don’t heal in real-time – just wrapping the bandage around yourself will be enough to heal you right up. Not that they need to know that, would probably freak them the fuck out.

Upon taking in the expression on your face, Rowan breaks into a grin and stashes the vial away once more, drifting behind the sales counter and digging around underneath it. You cast a glance around the walls once more, but only herbs and the like are there. Does this mean he keeps all of his worthwhile shit under lock and key? Smart guy, especially when he’s not suited for combat.

After a few moments, he comes up with a few items bundled in his arms, spreading them across the counter.

“That’ll be 50 gold for each of these, except the one on the end. If you’re unsure about anything, just ask me!”

Ah, consumable prices. The true evil in the world.

“Any chance I can get some of this stuff cheaper? I’m gonna be getting up close and personal with the curse, after all. Hazard pay is a thing where I come from, you know?” You say to Rowan, who lets out a big belly laugh at your words.

“These are already on discount, friend – some of this stuff would cost you an arm and a leg otherwise, believe me.” Rowan says between chuckles, leaning against the counter with crossed arms. “I sell quality items, and I put a lot into them. This is more than a fair price, trust me.”

You spend a few moments staring him down, but eventually cede to him. You don’t feel like pressing him on the prices beyond this, as time is a resource that is slowly dwindling. Casting a look over the items, you eventually decide on grabbing the bandages, the satchel of powder, and the glass vial. You fork over 150 gold to the man, who is more than happy to drop it into a metal tin underneath the counter.

>GOLD: 112 (-150).

“Very good choices, Orion! The bandages are self-explanatory, but these two are interesting. The powder is for distracting people – clients have taken to calling it flash-powder, and the vial is an experiment on my behalf involving strengthening your body for a short period. It’ll make you powerful, but it also makes you more susceptible to hits.”

“Sounds good to me.” You turn around, stowing the items away and making your way to the door.

“Before you go, catch!”

You turn around to see something large and brown tossed at you. You manage to catch it, and when you unfurl it, you can identify it as a woolen jacket.

“You’ll catch cold if you’re out there for too long. That’ll help cover you up, and disguise the fact that your tunic is torn up.”

You glance down to your torn sleeve, and then slide the jacket on.

“Thanks, Rowan.”

>ARMOR ACQUIRED: Wool jacket. (+1)

Finally being able to step back out into the open, you see that the rain has gotten worse. The sky is entirely blotted out by thick grey clouds, and the environment is moderately dark because of this. Wincing to yourself as you wipe some of the rain from your eyes, you begin to set upon your objective.

Scale the rooftops. Writing now!

You waste little time in scaling up the side of a building once more, using a window planter as leverage to pull yourself over. You scan the street you were just on from your new vantage point, and find that the guards that had been lingering by the docks have now left. Either they finally got a move on with extra water, or they just wanted to get out of the storm – either way, if they went back to the square, chances are they might have had a surprise waiting for them.

You really hope that the mysterious figure doesn’t decide to come after you. Not out of lack of confidence, but because it’ll really fucking irritating.

Crossing the rooftops as fast as you can, you observe the streets. They are still entirely empty, and gentle light can be seen between gaps in some curtains. As you drop back down to the street in order to cross from the main road, you look towards the junction once again, and find that the fire has gone out. The sudden downpour no doubt had a part to play in that, and with how dark it’s become, you can’t exactly tell if there’s anyone in the square from this distance.

Nobody calls out to you at least, so you’re able to cross without issue.

The buildings in this area of town look much nicer than that in the southern section. These ones look nice and painted, with more rock-solid foundations than the slapdash in the slummier area of town. Where the others were jammed together in a competition for space, these are placed a bit farther from each other, allowing there to be a semblance of greenery in between the dirt roads.

Eventually, you’re able to see the decoration Tina was talking about in one of the lawns, causing you to pause and take in the scenery. The house is very rustic, almost looking like a two story log cabin more than anything else. There are several windows that would allow in light, however they, like the others, are covered with thick curtains.

“You can tell they have some form of money, at least. Must be a good fisherman.” You remark to yourself, pondering your next move.

(Yo! Watched the PS5 stream, shit looked super cool – only two announcements that I could say I didn’t really care for! Sorry for the slow updates over the past day or so, haven’t been feeling super hot overall. Thought I was doing well earlier, but it didn’t work out, lol.)

Hopping down from the rooftops once more, you hit the cold dirt and move across the road, scouting both ends of the street as you do. They’re still entirely empty, with no guards to be seen and none of those infected creatures, so you’re able to move onto the grassy lawn uninhibited. Moving around the building, while keeping your eyes on the windows, you find a small wooden protrusion that a pile of wood rests under.

Getting around the corner fully, you spot a stump with an axe embedded into it, no doubt for cutting the wood you just saw. There are more windows in the back, along with a small set of stairs that lead up to the raised doorstep. The area seems pretty well kept for what it is, although unlike the front, you cant’ spot a lot of personality back here. It’d make sense since no one’s walking by this area and it is medieval times, but still.

“Wonder if he had Tina cut the wood? Speaking of that, Tina never mentioned her mother…they must live alone, then.” You idly remark to yourself, casing the outside. You walk up to the door and turn the knob, which seems to be unlocked – you don’t open it, but you keep the knowledge in mind. Next you move onto the windows, testing if they’re unlocked, and once more, they are.

“A startling lack of security despite everything going on. He even forced out his daughter…maybe he isn’t worried about security, but he also may be incoherent enough where it doesn’t matter to him.”

Stepping back, you look the place up and down one more time.

Just as you’re about to walk up to the back door and sneak in, you pause as your hand is inches away from the knob. Although there’s an overwhelming chance that the man has been zombified, he could be the exception to the rule. You’d like to at least give him the benefit of the doubt, both to ensure your own safety, and so you don’t have to return to Tina with bad news.

Chances are she wouldn’t take it well, after all.

Therefore, with this in mind, you move off the steps and pick two rocks from the grass, large enough to make noise but not to damage the actual window. When you have them secured in your hands, you throw both of them – one at one of the upper windows, and one at the lower. If he happens to hear it, you’ll be able to confirm if he has at least some semblance of sentience to him, which would make this little check-up a hell of a lot easier.

Or hey, even if he doesn’t, at least you’ll be able to get the flesh straight from the source.

A second passes. Then two. A full minute eventually goes by with no movement. You pick up more rocks and throw them, and still, nothing happens.

“Not a good sign.” You remark, rolling up the sleeves of your newly acquired coat and drawing your sword. “Let’s hope this doesn’t get too complicated.”

You walk up the steps once more and slowly open the door, the hinges creaking as you step into the house. As expected, the floor is wooden, and you wince as it creaks underneath your feet. The house smells quite odd, the air carrying both the scent of a basement and the briny smell of the sea. You’d like to call it comforting, but the sense of unease you feel vastly dwarfs anything like that.

The walls are unpainted, and have various fishing memorabilia strung up. There’s a rope fishnet, a decorative anchor, and a rack of fishing poles – there’s not much else in this hallway, however the general disarray of the home is in line with what you’d expect of a fisherman. As well as that, from your position, there is a door directly next to you, along with the short hallway ending in a T-junction.

However, the thing that bothers you most is that the house is silent.

Man, this feels firmly like a horror game, now.

Creeping forward, you press yourself against the wall and place a hand on the doorknob. Turning it slightly to make sure it’s unlocked, when you find that it is, you slowly begin to open it fully. When you’re able to peer inside, you see that it’s literally akin to a hallway closet you’d find in your world. You’re not entirely certain if this is historically accurate, but to be honest, you doubt Chrysanthemum cares all that much.

There are a series of coats hung up on hooks, some boots (some are quite dirty) lined up against the wall, along with a small side-table just barely able to fit in without taking up too much space.

“Huh, this really is a nice house…nothing like that shitty room Tina had me holed up in…” You murmur aloud, straining your ears to hear anything in the house. Still nothing.

Having identified the majority of what’s in this small closet, you back away and make your way down the hallway, trying to keep as quiet as possible along the way. When you reach the junction, you look both ways, and see the following.

To your left is another short hallway that leads to a single door, and to the right, you can spot the door that most likely leads to the entrance, as well as a wide frame that leads into a much more open room. The walls are still adorned with more fishing imagery, and the smell of brine gets stronger as you step further into the house.

Still no sound. Is he even here?

>Go into the door to your left – he’s gotta be somewhere!
>Go through the area to your right – you’re a bit surprised at the big room.
>Call for Raphael – you’re sick of this shit, just try to get his attention.
>Double back towards the closet and loot it.

Turning a right down the junction, you walk forward with your sword still drawn. If anything jumps out at you, you can stab it immediately, and if not, you can at least look threatening as you stare down the incoming harm to your person. Being equipped to do either is a necessity, after all!

As you approach the opening, the scent of brine in the air begins to change. The overwhelming smell is still very apparent in the air, however there is an undertone of rot to it that makes your nose wrinkle. It reminds you of fish being left out in the sun for far too long, and as you step through the doorframe, it literally does make you gag slightly due to the intensity.

You scan the room while holding your nose with your other hand, looking for any signs of life.

The room seems to be sectioned into both a rudimentary living room and a bar, judging by the little area that seems like a bar corner. A few tall wooden chairs are scattered in front of it, and you can spot a wooden bowl filled with something that is festering. Looking at the rest, you find a stone fireplace built into the wall, along with several chairs and tables strewn about the room. If you had to guess, this definitely appears to be an area for friends to meet rather than a place to spend time.

One thing that doesn’t escape your notice is that one of the chairs is occupied.

A man with blonde hair is sitting, heavily slouched. You can’t see his face from this angle; however you can tell that it’s buried in his arms that are rested atop his knees. There is no blood or anything of the sort surrounding him, and he seems as still as a log from where you are standing. You lean a little to the left and spot that his hand is as white as a sheet, but again, no oddities.

That must be Raphael, Tina’s father.

You wince – this isn’t looking good.

>”Raphael? You alright?” You call cautiously, sheathing your sword and raising your bow.
>Move over and inspect the body carefully – if he’s dead, you have some flesh to take.
>Knock over one of the various items of furniture to try and attract his attention.
>Inspect the bar for anything of value.

“Hey, Raphael? You alright?” You call to the man, sliding your bow from your shoulder and nervously pulling the string back. The man looks like a cut marionette at the current moment, but that doesn’t discount a sudden burst of speed that could leave you crippled.

When the words break the fragile silence that lingers over the reeking room, you watch a sudden jolt go through the still man’s body, almost taking you off guard. His ghostly white hands move away from his knees and grasp the arms of the chairs, his body straining as he goes to pull himself up. Halfway through, you watch his arms give, and he tumbles to the floor unceremoniously.

You back up against the bar, lining an arrow up with his head. The very second you do, he begins to stand.

His eyes look sunken in and glassy, the hair around his forehead pasted to his deeply tanned skin. The man’s coat is incredibly dirty, looking as if he’d rolled through an entire riverbank – you’re not sure if the dark brown is due to the color of the leather or the muck. A low gurgle comes from his throat, unable to escape past his lips as he takes a single step towards you.

He may have had a mouth, once. The black substance has taken it over.

It wraps around his face like a twisted mask, bound as tight as latex against skin. Despite the poor light, you can make out flecks of teeth and bile embedded and oozing, the sound of his very bones creaking as he moves to observe you.

There is a moment of very tense silence. When you move to let the string loose, all hell breaks loose as he charges towards you—

“Oh my GOD, can we get to the fucking point already?! We’ve been here for an hour!”

>Excuse me?

Your name is Orion Jasper, professionally known as Orange, and you are sat in a well-lit bar.

The air is warm from the heaters going as high as they can, the amount of people and circulation of food no doubt adding to it. Sounds of merriment can be heard throughout, no doubt from people experiencing the joy of drink after a long day of work, or perhaps a happy reunion with friends long unseen.

You are unfortunately having both of these moments happen at once, and the latter is far from happy.

Across the table from you sits a boy with untamed black hair, green eyes nervously darting between you and the blonde-haired boy who just exclaimed loudly. His body is bent over in a slouch, and you can’t recall him looking you in the eye once after revealing yourself to him.

Residual nervousness? Long-time stress? An unexpected event popping up in his face?

Yeah, that sounds like Wolf, alright.

The one sitting right next to him has impossibly long hair and cutting blue eyes, expression reminding you of a dog who’s been irritated enough times. He’s only barely stopped from slamming his hands on the table by Wolfgang shooting him a look, and yet that does little to lessen his glare.

“When Nova asked why you’re here, he didn’t mean explain the whole fucking story! Nobody cares about Infinite Skies, that game’s for cowards who can’t hack it in a proper competitive environment. Who the fuck even plays battle royales? Ain’t that right, Nova?”

“I-I didn’t say anything even remotely like that, Golden.” His voice is impossibly low compared to Golden, who has and always will be a loud and fucking irritating talker.

“Yeah, yeah, I can see it in your eyes. The point is – why are you here? We don’t need a whole rigmarole, and you practically scared Cinder right out of the booth! Me and Nova had a score to settle!”

“She went to get food,” Wolfgang supplies weakly, causing Golden’s eyes to snap towards him. “A-and we didn’t have a score, I d-don’t think.”

You sigh deeply, pinching the bridge of your nose. Wolf asked you to tell him what you’d been up to, and you decided to tell him! What’s the harm in that? And this little Auxilia prick has the gall to interrupt? That team’s always been a set of uppity bastards, and it seems that hasn’t changed in the slightest. He even looked all apprehensive when you first showed up, too.

“Fine.” You glare at the boy, who glares at you back even harder. “The reason why I’m here, which I was getting to, is that I need some money. And you’re gonna help me get it, Wolf – since you’re so conveniently back in the market, after all.”

The grin that crosses your face is one that could rival a shark’s. The look across Golden’s looks like that of an even angrier dog.

And Wolfgang’s?

Well, you’re not sure quite how to feel just yet.

Well hey there everyone, quite an abrupt ending and archival, yeah?

Apologies about that – a few days ago I hit a pretty hard personal snag, and it sort of drained a lot of want to do things due to it fucking up my mental health. I’m pretty sure it’s been obvious over the past few days, but I’ve been meandering a bit, and that’s entirely on me! And so, rather than dragging this out with sporadic updates for a few more days, I figured I’d end it here and get back to our good old MC.

Thank you all for showing up for this experiment! I learned a lot about certain styles along the way, and it was a lot of fun! Sorry if you all are a teensy bit irritated at the sudden stop, it was getting to a point where I was starting to dread updating – this was fun, and maybe we’ll revisit it at some point in the future! I’m just very aware when I’m not putting in my best effort, and I really hate being under par for this quest.

Now, I’m sure that the main question on your mind is when we’re starting up again? No, I can solidly promise that there will not be a long hiatus this time – I’ve learned from those days. Well, the choice is once again in your court!

https://strawpoll.com/d87xhx64

I’m going to leave this poll up until Monday, and whichever option is the predominant one, that’s when we’ll be starting up again!

Thank you again for coming around, and I hope that you had a great time! Please give any questions, comments, concerns, or compliments! They keep the QM machine rumbling, and I also like making the quest less shit!

Have a good day, anons. See you soon!

The interlude started out interesting, but did start to drag. Probably due to your mental state. Feel like more posts in a smaller time period would have served it better.

Anyway, guessing Orion lost since he's looking to exploit Wolf to make some cash.

Dude come on. So everything we did was pointless then? That's like the worst way to end the thread. Invalidating like 2 or 3 weeks worth of votes. Not to mention last thread too.

I was having fun too. Goddammit
>>
>>4304356
Just so I'm not bitching and not contributing here's a few things I think you could've worked on.

Posting frequency is the big thing but if shit was going down irl then I can't hold it against you. It's what happened to me when I ran my quest and I had to take a break so it's whatever. Maybe smaller posts would have helped but that seems to go against your writing style.

The removal of the time limit. Earlier in the game our actions had time consupmtion and that was a good way of keeping things going and making us actually think of what to do while keeping us moving. Somehow we lost that and I think it is also what slowed the game down because now we wanted to do more things that just hyper focus on a single objective. The level limit was a good counter balance however so we didn't just rush to the end.

Too many big quests. While it was cool to have this zombie survival quest chain it also bogged down everything as we wanted to do them all for maximum exp. That goes against the fast paced nature of a battle royal. While it was a week long, I feel like that was more for in universe player count than for quest content. A good change would have been each island to be a day at least for out perspective that way our goals were to get off the island asap and not get used to having so much time if you get what I mean.

Which brings me to me next point and that was the other players. We had little interaction with other players in game, mostly due to our playstyle, but also no one was really hunting us down or trying to impede us so again no sense of urgency. Maybe you meant to put them in a later post but a combination of all of the above slowed us down.

Finally I feel like there was simply to big of a scope for what was meant to be a small side arc (which that I'll get to in a bit). So because you wanted to explain stuff and make sure everything was rolling, it kind of slowed you down and us too. Your strength kind of became your weakness here.
>>
As for the shit you did good?

Like before, your writing is pretty damn good. I liked the characters and how different they were compared to the other crew while having distinct personalities. I genuinely liked to go and chat with Clay just to bro it up with him. You also explained the new game mechanics and senario really well. I liked looking on twitter as a way to spy on other players and gauge fan reactions. You know like how competitive gaming is. You had a good concept and it didn't feel like a rehash of Wolf's story. Which is why I have a problem with your scope and how you ended it all.

This didn't feel like a side arc, it felt like a whole season 2 for Gun x Glory which I absolutely wanted. I don't care if we don't get to play as the origional cast because you were giving me a whole new cast that was just as good. An entire season and arcs focusing on Orion and his gang would've been great and a good way to lead into season 3 which could have dealt with Fletcher or Golden if not being just about a team up with Wolfgang and Orion. You could have really fleshed all this out and instead you kind of just wanted to rush this as a mini thing for a single thread which I think really hurt the game. Especially with that ending man. Jesus. Wolfgang seemed like a wimp, Golden seemed was more agressive than his ussual annoying self. I get you wanted to end it but man that was rough.

Probably should have left how to end it with a vote. Or if you wanted to give it a proper ending, maybe you could have time skipped to the last day and given us a handful of traits to vote on just to power up for the final brawl. Then at least we could have some say in how this all turned out. You were doing good but I feel like you got overwhelmed with the scope of it all for what you wanted to be a single thread game when you really planned out an entire second season.

That's all I really got. Maybe you should take some time off, even though that tends to be game killer, because every single post is coming with an excuse now and I think you might be burning out.

Take care of yourself man. Stay safe.

Hey anon, thank you very much for the constructive criticism! You've absolutely nailed a lot of these - namely, the scope. This was intended to be a small thing and I definitely went way overboard with what I wanted to do, compared to the small amount of threads I had to do them. This definitely would have been better as a Season 2, like you said, so that's entirely my bad!

A lot of this traced back to some shit going down a few days back, which basically made my desire to write go down quite a bit. I felt like I had a very strong start on this, but as things went on, things slowly got more sporadic and sporadic - something I absolutely hate due to my past instances of burnout. With my heart not in it, I feel like I'm personally putting out shit content, which hampers my enjoyment of writing it majorly - that's why I ended it so suddenly without calling a vote, and as you said, it would have definitely been better to have a vote of some kind rather than the sudden end.

The time limit is also linked to this - I simply forgot to put the mechanic in after a point. The islands were originally going to be a day each, but the scope vs. what I could reasonably do didn't allow that. I could have absolutely added more pressure with players, but it just didn't work with it towards the end.

This has been a very big learning experience quest-wise for me overall, and I'll definitely be keeping all of this in mind for when I do revisit this, because I've put too much work into it to just let it drop lol.

Again, thank you very much for taking the time to write all of this out, it seriously does mean a lot to me.

Also I will add in regards to your words on the actual ending post - Wolfgang is in a situation where he's seeing somebody suddenly who he didn't expect or want to see again, so that would make him meeker, which is in line with the character IMO. Golden is in a situation where he was going to immediately pounce on Wolfgang for a match afterwards, which he keeps getting denied over and over again, making him more aggressive overall.
>>
>>4304392
Well as long as you're willing to get better from this. I know people chatting about my quest when I used to run helped me keep going and if nothing I just want this quest to move forward and keep it's level of quality if not get even better.
>>
>>4304443
Oh, absolutely. Even stuff like this constructive criticism keeps me going - just knowing that people care enough to actually write stuff like this means a lot, even when I'm in a personal low point. Improvement is always my goal - obligatory first time QM blah blah blah and all that.

I'm very sorry for disappointing you anon, and I hope that this isn't enough to turn you off from reading it overall! Have a great night.
>>
>>4304450
Nah I'll stick around. I wouldn't have posted my thoughts if I wasn't interested in seeing where the story went. Still trying to make time to start running again and I like to see how other people run games to get a better idea of things. Especially rolling systems, can never get my head around them and balance.
>>
>>4304464
Completely understand rolling system confusion, mine at the very beginning was an absolute mess - 3d20 works just fine for me, and be sure to plug your quest so I can keep up with it whenever you start running.

Woah, dude.
Ya gotta finish the Infinite Skies storyline sometime. Not saying it should take over Gun x Glory, but... sometime. Maybe in short intermediary segments or something.
Top-tier writing as always.
I am forever filled with questions of where Chrysanthemum gets their AIs from, and where Auxilia Hail Auxilia gets the anticheat AI. Real spooky stuff. Maybe Wolf will find out one day.
And as always, take care! We care about you too so do what you need for yourself.

Just want to say that I enjoyed the thread immensely and didn't feel like 2-3 weeks of playing through a new game with a new POV was a waste in the slightest. Not totally understanding the motivations or emotions of long standing characters doesn't mean that cirno's writing them inaccurately. They're his characters, and there might be something going on that we're not aware of.

It was rough at the end and forgetting the time restriction was a little bit of a letdown, but I know cirno's been having a hard time of things lately. I do agree with a fair bit of the criticism but really wanted to voice that I don't think this thread was all that bad, and definitely not a waste of time. Hope the next thread is smoother, and thanks again for running cirno.
