The infinite cosmos spirals before us all, from the distant cloud falling into the familiar spiral of the milky way among its different and numerous siblings. Though separated by the long dark there is a beauty to this in silence. A music of the spheres as we cast our eyes to a single star of among millions. Falling through it’s assemblage of Ten planets and assorted moons we settle upon a tiny spec. An Isolated bulwark of life. It is blue at a distance from it’s wealth of water beneath a reflective and refractive atmosphere. Closer we see swaths of green denoting the vivacious abundance of life it holds on the land not submerged in its scintillating seas. Amid these swaths of green are other colors. The colors and structures of civilization. Above this world is a single silver white moon.

Long ago, the light cast off this moon carried a message of love. A message that fell gently as does this dream of a figure clad in a white dress with golden boning and trim. She falls to a palace of columns and domes. A forgotten place in a forgotten memory or dream. There waits a figure in black, arms open to accept the figure as she runs to him on beams of moonlight...their faces closing in on one another in a silhouette against the silver gleam. Tilt and rise to first meet eyes, and then to close into a kiss before the world is white and we return to some belief or semblance of waking.

Our story takes focus on a small island nation off the coasts of one of this world’s continents. In a city built in multiple prefectures around a bay. Far removed from palatial places amid forgotten histories or stolen dreams. An alarm rings under the morning light in a small suburban yellow house with a robin's egg blue roof.

“Usagi! You’re going to be late,” a mother yells from downstairs as you’ve ignored the pink wind up alarm clock upon your window sill to the point that it’s clapper dies.

You shift uncomfortably beneath your comforter before blearily tearing your eyes from darkness to look at the time.

And see that you’re late.

“ROAAAAAAAAAAAR” you scream upon realization that you’re late.
>>
>>4324237
With speed you secure yourself into your school uniform. Slide hair clips into your hair to keep your fashionable buns and tails together before charging into your day. You haven’t even had time to comb your fur.

“GROWL?” you manage as you lumber down the stairs, asking your mother why she didn’t wake you up sooner before losing your footing and sliding down the narrow staircase hitting and breaking each step beneath your tail before slamming into the floor at the flight’s end.

“GROAR,” owwie.

“Usagi are you alright?” your mother calls from the kitchen.

“GROWL GROAR RAR,” No, you are not alright.

You enter the kitchen.

“Graaagruph,” that really hurt, you spy sitting next to the young woman with dark blue hair is a wrapped bento box likely containing your lunch.

“RAGRH!” you thank her for fixing your lunch and offer a brief goodbye as you scoop it in your paw and race for the door.

“See you later dear, please be careful, okay?” your mother asks with some worry as mothers are want to do.

“RORAY,” Okay, you respond as you crash through the front door of your home in your race to get to school on time.

Quickening your step down the pedestrian streets of your neighborhood you bellow.

“UUUUURAAGH GROWL GROWL GROWL,” Uaaaah, you’re late you’re late you’re late!

Act 1: Usagi.

“RAGHAROUGHAROOO,” Why does morning have to come so early, you wonder aloud, you’re so sleepy.

You are Usagi Tsukino. You’re 14 and go to Juuban Middle School. You’re a bit of a klutz and honestly kind of a crybaby too. You’re also a 7’9” tall bear weighing 1,430lbs.

Suddenly while running to school, you’re twin tails flailing behind you, you trip and pitch forward. Falling over and smash your snout into the ground with a reckoning thud. Owwie!

“ROAAARGH!” owwie owwie ow ow ow!

Huh, that’s weird did you step on something? GASP! A KITTY CAT!

Oh no, you tripped over that kitty cat!? Are they al-

Wait, why is there a cat instead of a cat pancake? Or why didn’t the cat go flying off into the distance as if punted? You don’t want to admit you’re fat, you’re a perfectly reasonable weight for your height and build...but at 1,430lbs of bear you shouldn’t have just tripped. Slipped, maybe?

You halt your crawl to your feet and plot down on the sidewalk in thought. It’s truly a bother as you take your forehead in your paw and try to concentrate.

“Roaraugh?” you whine to yourself uncertain of your reality.

The world around you isn’t built for a bear. You go down those steps at home every morning and fall down them easily since your growth spurt turned you into a klutz...do you break the stairs every day? That...that isn’t right?!

You look over at the cat, which is rising to it’s paws and shaking itself off. It is a black cat with a pair of bandages crossed on top of it’s fur. The car looks at you, there is a glossy but oddly intelligent cast to it’s gaze as it hisses and leaps up to a nearby wall. It ignores you and butts it’s head into the top of the wall trying to get the bandages off, but is unsuccessful in this task. You don’t know why but you think there is something important about that cat being bandaged, that this cat is more than it seems and you cannot shake this intuited feeling.

The School bell rings in the distance.

>Oh no, You’re going to be late!

>Maul, and Attempt to remove the bandage from the cat
>3, Failure: Soft Move taken against you.

Those bandages...something is wrong. Something is very wrong. You feel anger and instinct take you as you rear back on your hand legs and roar down at the cat who you now tower over even as they scratch at their own forehead with insufficient paws. For this task, you’ll offer paw to spare. Instinct and rage take you.

With a powerful swipe the cat sees you coming and launches itself over your horizontal attack with ease before darting down your arm and to your face as the next claw swings down where your prey no longer waits. With a hiss the cat lunges at your face and eyes, clawing the space between and finding purchase beneath your thick fur.

This disorienting moment causes you to sway and topple as the cat leaps away and darts off into somewhere unseen. The mysteries beneath the bandage will for now go unsolved and this expression of rage leaves you feeling drained.

Again the school bell chimes in the distance as you come back to yourself...is this yourself? What you just were a moment ago felt true. It felt natural. Again you are possessed of your ability to reason as Usagi Tsukino, who is exactly who you have always been. And without a doubt, Usagi Tsukino is now late for school. Gathering your scattered things, you move forward to face unfortunate music.

“Usagi Tsukino, you’re late again!” Haruna Sakurada, your Homeroom and English teacher scolds after you arrive at school very late, “Go Stand in the hallway!”

“guff,” Yes Miss Haruna.

Ugh, it’s not your fault the other kids get to school on time. You-you don’t...

You don’t move as fast as you should on two legs? Since the incident with the cat you’ve been unable to look away from the things that are wrong with what’s going on. As you stand in the hallway you realize that when you arrived in your classroom that there is no way you were going to be able to sit at that desk.

Everyone calls your teacher Miss Haruna because she’s very young for a teacher and wanted to seem relatable. She’s really nice and a good teacher...but she also happens to teach English which is your worst subject.

For a moment you glance at the morning light streaming in the hallway window, and your mind shifts back to the dream and the girl in the white dress running down a beam of moonlight. The Princess in your dream was so beautiful.

“Raoughm Rray, growl growl grouf,” You wish you could be a Princess someday, then you would never have to go to school again.

There is a twisting and gurgling sound. Your tumbly has the rumblies.

“Whine,” you’re so hungry...when a thought catches you and you set your school bag down and snuffle around into it for your bento.

Since you skipped breakfast, why not?

The door into the classroom behind you slides open to reveal your teacher and she does not look pleased.

>Maul and attempt to eat Bento Box in one bite
>9. Partial Success.

“Miss Tsukino, What were you doing just now!?” your teacher demands with a scolding tone as she steps with you into the hallway and looks up at you over your snout.

You have hunger so you will not hide. There is no authority here over that which is satiating the hunger inside you and the need of survival. Not even bother to unwrap it, you toss the cloth wrapped box of plastic and wood into your maw and crunch down with your teeth. Tearing the fabric and splintering the hard shell you are rewarded with the taste of your mother’s omelette roll, the sour taste of pickled plum, and so much rice.

“Miss Tsukino! Eating in class right in front of me!?” Haruna Sakurada continues her scolding tone as she raises up what at a glance would be your recent test, corrected and scored.

“ROAR!”

You do not notice this, for the Bento was not enough and you will not be threatened. With a powerful and lazy swipe you both claw your teacher’s face and hurl her to the ground. Blood splashes across your uniform and fur as time slows. Haruna Sakurada stares at you and really sees you for the first time. Her eyes widen in confusion, shock, and realization as her world pitches sidewise from the force and nearly upside down as the tiled floor closes in. There is a sickening, though not to you in this moment, crack and snap upon impact as she twists into a limp mess.

There are screams from within the classroom. You fall on all fours and roll the mass over, pinning it beneath one paw before leaning in…

-

Principal Haruna Sakurada wakes in her bed with a start. It is the middle of the night and she is sweating and near to panic. The nightmare that woke her is fleeting, beyond the notion that it was set during a time of her life when she was still a middle school teacher, and it will be hours before she sleeps again

-

It is later in the day. You sit alongside your classmates outside of the school. Though you’ve already eaten they are enjoying their lunches. Your furry mass takes up half a bench, and causes the wood to bend and buckle. Your muzzle and your uniform are covered and stained with errant viscera.

Your classmates and friends chatter in idle about a number of jewelry store robberies that have happened lately. Your best friend, Naru Osaka, notes that it has her worried as a scary situation. Her family is very successful and her mother owns and operates a Jewelry Store in the heart of downtown Azu Juuban.

Another classmate, an Otaku named Gurio Umino, who sits nearby to you and the girls notes that it’ll be fine because Sailor V has been showing up all over the city and catching bad guys.

Sailor...Sailor V? You’re supposed to find that surprising but you aren’t as ignorant as you were expecting. More than that…
>>
>>4324471

What happened with the screaming? You flare your nostrils and ruffle your snout before scratching some vis-vera off of your nose. Did...did you eat Miss Haruna?! What is going on? What on earth is going on!?

Everyone is still talking about Jewelry Stores and mysterious sailor super heros. Naru suggests you all swing by her mother’s store after school is out.

>9, Partial Success, What here is not what it appears to be.

You really want to ask them if anything seems out of the ordinary...your friends...but something isn’t right. The rest of your classmates besides those sitting near to you, the ones at distance and uninvolved in your moment at lunch...they’re hazy. Blacked out. Splotches undefined beyond basic shape against the background.

There is such an air of uncertainty and uncanny illusion about several, but not all, of the people you sit among now. There is a fear in you. You are honestly a bit of a crybaby sometimes and while covered in blood and afraid that your reality isn’t seems an appropriate time to bail and find a good place to cry until this all blows over.

That is only sensible. You have to get out of here. You rise and try to trundle away but Naru Osaka grabs the hem of your bloody skirt.

>6, Failure to change the scene, Hard Move banked against you for later.

“Usagi, come on,” she smiles at you and for a moment seems far more real than the, “You’re not going to eat with the rest of us during lunch time?”

Several of the other girls grab onto you as well. They crowd you in, try to restrain you. It makes you feel claustrophobic. Naru looks up at you and smiles. Most of the other girls no longer have faces but also smile. Gurio Umino has joined the crowd to hold you and also smiles. He smiles the widest of all.

“Come on Usagi-chan, we’re going to the Jewelry Store!”

“Jewelry Store!”

“Usagi-chan,”

“Usagi”

“Jewelry,”

“GROOOUGH ROOOOOOAR!” No. NO!

>11, Maul. Success.

Your fang is merciless. Your nail meets little resistance. You are fury as you twist and bat at them, pushing them away. Cleaving them in twain. Leaving black ichor and red pulp upon the bench and the walkway outside of your school.

Naru’s smile goes blank and worried. She seems to be broken from a haze and realize a terrible mistake as two claws lance down atop her shoulders while you tower over her. The claws dig deep and the downward force buckles her knees as she collapses at your feet. Gurio Umino tries to cop a feel and you hit him so hard he splatters into ebon sludge as his head flies away...still smiling too wide.
>>
>>4324580

You roar triumphantly. You roar and fall forward into a run toward the silhouettes of classmates in the distance who do not more or flee...just stare.

-

Naru Osaka awakens and vomits in dream born trauma. It felt so real. She remembers the dream clearly. She remembers it as clearly as she remembers that day. As she regains her senses and sense of composure she reaches for her phone. Something isn’t right. She pauses...she takes a look at the room that has felt empty for years...and misses Umino.

-

Covered in splotches of red and black, your uniform showing wear and tearing, you lope in an ursine gait through uncertain terrain away from the school. Buildings pass you by on either side in the decidedly wrong order. What is this? What is wrong. What’s going on?!

You are Usagi Tsukino. You are Usagi Tsukino! You ARE Usagi Tsukino!? Oh my god, did you just kill Naru-chan?! Oh no, oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no!

“RAAAAAAUGH!” you cry out unable to keep your sobs back as you screw your eyes tightly and try to outrun this existential horror of what you are and what you’ve done.

Your clumsiness, and the overriding force of this experience, conspire against you in that moment of blind momentum you crash into a large and sturdily built figure.

“Roaugh,” the figure grumbles at you as you open your eyes and look up.

“RAOUGH!” you demand he mind his own business as you take sight of him and feel the faintest sense of deja vu.

Before you is a bear taller than you are wearing a dining jacket and sunglasses. A black tailed dining jacket in the middle of the day?! There is something familiar in his eyes, and he in turn stares at you. The moment stretches...bewildering for both of you to be certain. What is this strange feeling?

>9, Partial Success. Soft Move taken against you.

This...this is all too familiar but wrong somehow, you need to know what’s real.

Are you real. Is the bear before you, who you recognize as someone precious to you, real? Well, is he precious to you or is he precious to who you believe yourself to be?

It’s too much, it’s so much.

“Growgle?” questions the bear in front of you in an appropriate way for this remembered meet cute, absolute condescension.

There is instinct raging beneath the surface. It recognizes what’s real and what isn’t. It wants to lash out and then be left alone...but you can’t lose the self you believe is you to that state just yet. Here and now you need to aim that force. You need to harness that ferocity,

You twist your paw and let the light glint off of it as you plant your feet and swipe left. You swipe right. You swipe and swipe and swipe and swipe. This action meets resistance of fur, hide, and the underlying mechanics of this feigned reality. Nail and fang manage to pierce the veil, tearing it and him like paper. The cars on the street. The pantomimes of people. The bear in front of you. All of them are torn away revealing the inky black void. The silent space between distant stars.

You fall.

You are cold and alone.

You want to cry.

You curl into yourself. You cry. Usagi you dummy you don’t even know what’s going on and now you’ve torn the world away with only scraps of memories from beyond this day lingering in the distant reaches of your mind as you again screw your eyes tightly.

You hurt Miss Haruna. You hurt Naru-chan. You hurt Umino-kun. You hurt Mamo- well, you hurt a Bear that dressed and acted like Mamo-chan. You even tried to hurt Luna.

Wait. Luna? Luna’s your cat. You have a pet cat? ...no that’s not right. Luna is more like a friend. You can remember that much. Because you...because you are…

You open your eyes and uncurl. You see pieces of the false world falling around you. Occasional glimpses of people you know and pieces of scenery in a rain around you in this distant void. Among them you spy, still clawing at the bandages on her forehead the black cat from this morning!

>10: Success. Accept this fall into distant void.

It’s no use. This weightless feeling consumes you as you continue to spiral into darkness. As much as you cling to the identity of Usagi Tsukino, you are not. You can’t be. You’re a bear beyond their depth in and the endless sea of night. So you let go of everything and let it take you.

You lose your attachment to the concept of Usagi Tsukino and as you fall, and the rest of the things from the feigned reality that are falling with you are consumed by the dark one by one. The last shreds of her uniform are pulled off you by the buffeting force of the nothingness you drift through, black clouds forming beneath this sea and swirling into a storm of eternity and reckoning.

You hurt people you thought you cared for. You deserve this. Even as you try to let go and detach you feel that pain. That guilt. Your twin blond tails continue whipping and trailing behind you as your fur creases and ruffles from the force of your descent.

Soon, you are alone. Alone in this dark and nebulous space but ever falling.

Until this miasma breaks into a scintillating span of distant starlight and approaching...you don’t know how to describe it. Something primeval. Something primordial. Something of cosmic importance. It is both all consuming but also a torrent of life and magic...and it is at the center of all things. Life. Death. Rebirth. Cycle and Spiral revolve here and you fall to it’s center.

In this cauldron at the heart of space...as you descend into it and feel yourself being torn asunder and reborn...in a white gown with an etheric train, a silver staff in your hand, and hair as white as starlight. Though, still a bear. In one instant you experience a oneness with the cosmos you hadn’t felt since...a long time ago. And at this height of awareness and enlightenment the dream ends.

And you awaken with a gentle calm.

You are Usagi...you definitely are Usagi. At this point in your life you are 37 years old, and definitely still a klutz and a crybaby...but that’s okay. You are other things too these days, to a lot of people who depend on you. And, before things are over you’ll depend on a lot of people. With a deep breath you sit upright and move the covering from the small reinforced window in the room you’ve taken in this space. Moving it, you have a clear view of the blue world below. Swaths of white cloud cover and green continents greet you in the well calculated but intimidating distance of space between it and the moon you now wait upon...hoping to return as you did once long ago in another life on a beam of moonlight.

Sailor Bear Quest...End.

Not enough familiarity to say much. Guessing high rolls are still good and low are bad?

Cousin to an older April Fool's special (2014, has it been that long?):

PbtA is a 2d6 kit for Failure, Success at Cost, and Success kind of framing. Where even failure can cause a narrative fail forward rather than just you don’t do the thing baked into rules by a certain degree with moves taken by whomever is running. If you already do fail forward stuff in other games you run its pretty easy to get into and there are a ton of games that have different moves and philosophies for how to decide moves to actions. I’m still a d20 junkie but this had its charm to play and run for questing and at the table.

A big sticking point for getting back into the quest is remembering my own damn rules and 60+ NPCs (those you know and those you don’t)

Oh hey, I missed this because of the picture. Good to see you back Artemis.

I’m back. Plotting ahead. And have written the OP for 155 ahead of time after doing a full personal reread of the quest and sorting old notes.

Soon, we’ll truly be back

>after doing a full personal reread of the quest
That must have taken a while.

>Soon, we’ll truly be back
Looking forward to it.

It. Fucking. DID.

I forgot so much. I remembered more potential turns from various votes than I thought I remembered. How close things came to moving toward a Dark Lady mode end game.

I’d have to look over the quest again myself, but didn’t we turn into Dark Lady but keep our mind through friendship?

It was more a temporary feral dark lady mode...not playing Mikage as antagonist mode

>Mikage as antagonist
That would have been bad. We would have made Koyomi cry!

Gosh, remembering Gnash and Fire Senator's wants to go villain.
>>
>>4328099
Don’t remember anyone wanting to go villain, but I’m sure I’ll find it somewhere along the way.

I mean, it was mostly making choices toward burning things down or convincing folks toward emotional spiral.
