Quest Intro

You are Mikage Chiba, second year high school student, fifteen years old. You used to be the third woman to carry the mantle of the magical guardian of love and justice known as Sailor Moon, after your mother and older sister. A year and a half ago you had a traumatic experience fighting the corpse of the father of your best friend, the struggle for victory leaving you thinking you had killed the man you had set out to save and prompting you to abandon your heritage. More than that, the related emotional collapse leads you to abandoning yourself. Hiding the events as best you could then developing disguises and personas to inhabit and do the things you would not let yourself do, to live while you let yourself wither, you carried on.

Now you know the truth and have been taking measures to put yourself back together, reconnect with family you shunned, old friends, and new ones. More than that you’ve been doing your best to support your younger sister, Koyomi, as she has become the fourth to carry the title as Sailor New Moon.

Quest Start

You’ve been chatting with Kanari Kino, your younger sister’s best friend, this morning outside of the middle school across the way from where you presently attend highschool. Its one of the few normal seeming conversations you’ve had with the girl in recent memory; other encounters have been consumed to some degree by the burdens related to your family legacies steeped in cosmic and mystical importance, or the younger girl’s decision to face you as a rivaled challenge to overcome for competitive and complicated reasons you’ve previously managed to hash out.

Last night, while playing board games with your younger sister, Koyomi, it came up that Kanari was being targeted by a bully because her dad is a Brazillian Sansei. You asked after this of the girl’s brother, Koito, who admitted it was going on and that he’d managed to deal with his own bullies in the past but the same tactics wouldn’t work out for Kanari who had just gotten very good at bearing it.

Ultimately you gave your sister the advice of doing what she felt was right to protect her friend without giving it a second thought. You, on a surprisingly measured hand, sought the girl out and had an even and measured conversation about it before school that put you at ease with how she was dealing with things. And for her general state of well being and coping. Really, true to form Kanari is a really good kid.

“Ka-na-ri-chan!” your younger sister practically sings as she turns the corner where her best friend’s vespa sat parked outside of the middle school, whilst calling out for her, “Kanari Kanari Kanari Kanari!”
>>
>>4350053
Your sister is moving in bounds with a large flat wrapped parcel under her arm, a sight that has both you and Kanari Kino bracing yourselves for the inevitable crash of your little sister’s propensity for klutziness. But...the trip and fall never comes, instead the blonde girl comes to a halt before the two of you.

“Nee-chan?” she says in surprise and then sighs with a smile, “You couldn’t just let me follow your advice?”

“Hey, it’s alright. For once she’s not trying to butt in on stuff,” Kanari smiles broadly and elbows you in the side,”

“Yup, I’m all wrapped up here. Got a busy day ahead of me too,” you explain before bidding the two a farewell as you start across the pedestrian street toward the High School as your sister grasps at her best friend’s sleeve and whispers something to her.

Probably about the prank she heard about Kanari’s bully, a girl you don’t know by the surname of Kujo, planning the other day. And you do have a busy day ahead. Finding out about the overnight portion of the stake out. Handing off your magically crafted gifts to Saori Umeki and Sasha for their sworn service to you and your family. Investigating the obvious and dubious shenanigan of Toriko-sensei’s replacement, Kinzoku-sensei.

Artemis’s report the other day indicated she was a cipher, a nobody whose paperwork was fake and who didn’t technically exist anywhere. That and your own observation of her with ability to assess psychometrically the powers and capabilities of others lead you to believe she is the mysterious Sailor Guardian who appeared to render aid before they flew off during the fight against Kalunite.

With all this in mind, It’s like you promised your sister last night, this thing with Kanari’s bully is their thing to deal with and you aren’t just going to micromanage their problems because of your imperative to protect them and the rest of the young Sailor Senshi.

As you turn away from them to go about your returned school day you can see a familiar white cat sleeping on the outer wall of your school. Artemis did say he wanted to come to school with you to confront this fake teacher…

You think it’s best to go take care of matters now before things go any further. If Kinzoku-sensei is a Sailor Guardian from a Distant world it is imperative you figure out what she’s doing here and get her cooperation. In this fight you and the others could use any ally you could gain, and hopefully prevent any dangerous misunderstandings or complications with your own mission and operations.

The stories you heard from your parents about butting heads with Uranus and Neptune when they didn’t realize their missions were one in the same.

“Morning Artemis,” you call up to the white cat as he cracks an eye open, revealing he may have just been feigning sleep, “You ready to do this?”

“Course kid. Lead the way,” the cat jumps down to walk beside you into the shoe lockers area.

-So, what do I need to watch out for?- you question the Mau telepathically.

-Well, the bracelets she was wearing weren’t a natural part of her Sailor Guardian Uniform,- Artemis explains as you trade out your shoes before heading up the stairs, -The Chaos possessed Galaxia’s Sailor Servants had similar devices, but these are only similar in make. I haven’t been able to discern their purpose, but I have figured out her likely powerset,-

Artemis proffers a suggestion that her powers will have a thematic basis in her Butterfly aesthetic. Possibly sleep or poison dust abilities, that may be combustible, and wind powers related to her wings if she unfurls them.

Well, now or never. The classroom is sparsely populated as there is still time before the bell. Gai Ginja is chatting with a cluster of other boys. Yoshi Sakurada is there but not going through his normal preparations as class representative, he seems to be helping your target get some things sorted out with some of her paperwork.

You don’t see any sign of Saori Umeki, but that could mean anything. Kairi Osaka, Midori Mori, and Keiko Sugimoto aren’t here yet either. Artemis crouches stealthily in the hall beside you, having kept some distance and stealth in his entry. No one has yet paid him any mind.

>”Excuse me, Kinzoku-Sensei, do you have a minute to talk before class?” “In private?”
>Go talk to Gai Ginja, see if the local extra terrestrial notices anything about this newcomer.

We aren't looking for a fight, and maybe rolling in with the whole crew might send the wrong message.
But might do to touch base with Gai to see if he's picked up on anything with his sense of emotions.

..is anyone of our allies aware of this? might do to send a note about it, just to keep them apprised.

I’m not even thinking about backup, just that we should talk to her after her work as a teacher is done for the day and we can talk longer.

Writing

Home from my commute and tallying. Gonna write now that I'm off what I've pre-writ. Glad folks are back for our show, and time to interact with Gai.
>>
You set your bag down at your desk and cross the room to Gai Ginja’s window side desk. Sparing a glance at the teacher’s podium as you go where Yoshi Sakurada continues to go over some paperwork with Kinzoku-sensei. From the glance you see that they’re going over the seating chart. Your temporary replacement for Toriko-sensei seems to be trying to memorize her class.

“Morning Ginja-san!” you greet the elfin alien in human guise as he calmly sorts through his preparations for the day.

“Oh, morning Chiba-san, is everything alright?” he greets you with a smile but his expression then drops slightly.

“Just checking in with you, and a bit curious,” you subtly nod at his momentarily bled concerns, “curious what you think about our substitute,”

He hums to himself and leans back in his seat. Though you don’t think he got your initial intentions on the matter.

“Well she certainly seems kind and competent to the task,” he begins, “She’s picked up where Toriko-sensei has left off with his lesson plan well enough and otherwise I find her presence pleasant,”

-I meant...there’s something up with her, Estra,- you explain to him telepathically, -And, I don’t think she’s a normal human,-

His eyes spark wide with understanding and he nods. Taking a moment to adjust the tie beneath his school sweater he glances over at the two by the teacher’s podium. You catch sight of Midori and Kairi joining the class and offer them a wave. Kairi-chan quirks an eyebrow but shrugs that you’re talking to Estra.

-You’re quite right, Chiba-san, she isn’t a normal human,- he explains with a concerned edge to his voice, -She’s not from this world for certain; and there is a fierce dedication under the burden of worry, duty, and an overwhelming sense of love,-

Kinzoku-sensei thanks Yoshi for helping her familiarize herself with the class and she steps away from the podium to sort through some of her papers while your class rep prepares to go over his pre-homeroom announcements. Taking up your notice, he gives you a wave and a smile. Your substitute teacher looks up from their papers and scans the class, and she notices for a moment the scrutiny they are under from the two of you. Her gaze lingers a moment before she goes back to her work prep.

-Chiba-san,- Estra thinks back across your connection as you break away from him back to your desk, -She is deeply suspicious of you, and on an extreme guard,-

-Thank you, Estra,- you open your bag as you find Artemis has slunk into the room, and your bag, -I don’t mean for this to draw you into any danger...but once again please keep your guard up,-

Keiko Sugimoto and Saori Umeki also join the students filtering into the room.

Hrmph, probably detects our shadow. Maybe we'll need to bring someone along to vouch that we aren't a shadow monster. Though Artemis might help with that, having a Scout handy might ease things as well.

>26 vs ?? One Degree of Success

If you’re both going to be on guard around each other all day, maybe it’s in your best interest to at least stake a claim for interaction and maybe try to put her at ease. Setting down your pencil case with a click on your desk, you rise again and head over to the corner by the white board where she goes over her paperwork.

She turns to face your approach with a smile, but there is something underlying it. She is sizing you up, much like you were the other day.

You offer a quick gesture to your friends as you cross in front of the class and catch sight of Artemis trying to wave down Midori at her desk behind your own.

“Excuse me, Kinzoku-sensei,” you smile politely and offer a quick bow, “Could I speak with you after classes, privately?” you question the woman with deep and dark blue hair, “I have some personal issues that Toriko-sensei was aware of and I’d rather not air them all in front of class,”

She considers your request a moment.

“Certainly, Chiba-san,” she says with an even tone and a pleasant smile that hides a defended worry, “Sakurada-san did let me know about some of your issues, but it’s always good to hear from a primary source. I’ll be on the northern roof access area for Lunch, Free Period, and during Club time this afternoon. It may seem odd but I prefer the comfort of an open sky rather than the shared office,”

“It’s nothing too serious now, I’m managing things better,” you say as your expression softens with a knowing pleading, “I don’t want anything about me to catch you off guard, putting everything on the table. Beyond at least what Yoshi does know,”

She considers you, evenly. Not letting her guard down but a prepared hostility you didn’t fully perceive behind her eyes relaxes.

“If it’s in the interests of putting everything on the table, I can understand and appreciate that Chiba-san,” her expression softens as well, “Please take your seat before homeroom. Come see me when you’re ready,”

With your difficult setup work accomplished, you take your seat before Yoshi begins going over today’s business as class representative. Kinzoku-sensei conducts homeroom and then her class. First period ends with a lack of the tension you had not been aware of, as Kinzoku-sensei leaves and the normal cycle of instructors proceeds through the day.

Lunch looms ahead. You could have your meeting with Kinzoku-sensei now or hold on until later. You’ve got options.

>Visit the roof to speak with Kinzoku-sensei

Letting your friends know you’re heading to the roof for your meeting with Kinzoku-sensei causes a momentary stir, but it’s quickly settled from your confidence that you’ve gotten through to her somewhat already, though you will accept if they think they’ll need to be on standby.

Artemis whispers up that he’ll have his eyes and paws on the situation. It doesn’t escape your notice that Saori Umeki has already slipped out of the classroom.

Still, while the between period lasts and before lunch truly starts you make your way to the stairwell. Once alone there, the white Moon Cat leaps from your bag and with a swish of his tail.

“Be ready for anything,” Artemis intones besides you, “We don’t know what’s been going on in the wider Galaxy since Sailor Moon saved Sailor Galaxia...or if this woman is connected to her at all,”

“I know Artemis,” you take a steadying breath, “but I think I got through to her that I don’t mean to be a threat,”

Coming to the door you open it, pushing through a strange sensation that might deter the non magical from approaching this roof. Once open you immediately notice something strange about the northern roof. There is an expected lack of anyone else on the rooftop, but there is a freestanding...british payphone?

It stands there in the middle of the roof. No immediate sign of Kinzoku-Sensei, but there is also a strange haze to the space…that smells extremely sweet.

“Okay...she’s definitely connected to Sailor Galaxia,” Artemis explains, “When she was still possessed her Sailor Animates used that to get around,”

You step out of the door but remain near it on the roof, in the shadow of the stairwell structure you wait. Artemis crinkles his nose at the scent of the place but seems otherwise unaffected by anything while you are aware of an attempt to disrupt something inside of you.

It does nothing to affect you, but it makes your fangs ache. Not in hunger, but for existing beneath your teeth. This is a power that disrupts the power of chaos. The rest of the smell that falls against your senses...it's not trying to charm you or ensorcell you...but it’s an attempt to keep things calm.

As you stand there a moment you can hear the gentle wing beats as a figure passes above, landing between you and the phone booth. She regards you, and the Mau at your side, carefully.

“Everything is on the table then,” it is the butterfly winged Sailor Guardian you saw before, glad in little and sheer blue, “I know you are a vessel and vector of Chaos but you mean me no harm and stand with an Advisor of this system’s Sailor Guardians. I am Sailor Papillon of Cocoon, and before I take actions toward your salvation from the plague of chaos upon you child, I will listen,”

Her powers are trying to disrupt the powers of Chaos and keeps heightened emotions, likely even her own, in check. Sensible and defensive.

“I have a means to purify myself,” you offer quickly with hands raised palms forward in a placating gesture, “It's just, I’ve managed to subvert this infection to better cleanse others and infiltrate the enemy,”

She considers your words and shoots a glance to Artemis beside you, who nods.

“And I don’t just stand with one of this system’s advisors, I am one of their advisors,” you relax the suppression of your crest and unfurl the Regalia of Eclipse, “because I used to be one of them. Let me introduce myself properly, as a child of The Earth and the Moon in this guise I am known as Eclipse, and I bear this destiny ahead of my past,”

The words flow naturally when you wear the hood and the mask. Your own uncertainty and anxiety over what you’ll do with it is suppressed as you draw up the necklace from around your neck. When you open it for her, the golden crystal shines as you evoke it’s potential in a show and flare of your crest.

Her eyes widen in some preface of understanding.

“I had heard the Sailor Guardians of this system were resilient,” she whispers as her wings stiffen and still, causing the air to clear.

“I assume you work with Galaxia,” you gesture toward the payphone on the roof, “so I believe our goals are aligned. We can work together against the threat my allies face now. I imagine we have more information on the situation on the ground here, but it seems you have a sense of the Chaos involved,”

“This is true, I am an agent of the Shining Galactica, safeguarding the Galaxy against the return of Chaos in form and force,” she says as she approaches you, dispelling her own transformation back into Kinzoku-sensei, “I was sent to investigate this matter and provide aid to your mother on order by Sailor Galaxia. So the Sailor Moon Question is the hilarious form of everyone is what we're doing but we're deadlocked between going over this in the base later and spending all your lunch period explaining what's going on.

So, we'll leave the vote opened for a bit longer on the first option.

“In order of succession,” you begin with a deep sigh on the matter of Sailor Moon.

“The Moon,” you point vaguely to the sky.

“Another timeline,” you gesture to the side before dismissing the regalia of Eclipse.

“This roof,” you close the broach containing the Golden Crystal with a snap and take a steadying breath, it’s never been easy to admit, before pointing out across the athletic field.

“And that middle school,” you say with certain finality.

“Daughter of the Earth and Moon,” she nods in understanding at your earlier explanation and sits on one of the benches on the roof nearby, next to one of the boxed gardens and beckons for you to join her, “I would know what you can tell me and offer myself to help,”

“Well, I’ll go over what I can. The rest can be gone over later at our base,” you explain and take a seat beside her.

“And with more people present,” Artemis explains as he hops up on the bench alongside you, “Well done, Mikage. I was worried this would turn into a fight,”

The haze that had been clearing dissipates entirely, and you only now notice how it muted the edges of the world, now the southern roof access area where you spoke with Yoshi privately is visible as well, and you catch sight of a few students there none the wiser to what happened here beneath a veil mere moments ago...save for a somewhat dazed looking Saori Umeki with her fingers locked into the roof’s fencing facing your general direction closer to where the haze had been than anyone else on the roof.

You offer her a short wave. She returns it with a placid and distant happy gaze. As it clears fully the dull ache in your fangs dissipates.

“Well...I’m ready to hear about it,” Kinzoku-sensei asks as she pockets a small butterfly motif tambourine you think was her means of transformation.

“It starts with the forgotten kingdoms of this Earth and the Moon,” you begin and recount the history behind the plot of this Shadow Elysion.

From the cultivation of shadows, the creation of monsters, the resurrection of long dead warriors, and the intentions of awakening a forgotten power and what their machinations left upon you.

She sits and listens to the whole thing from your perspective, about the victories behind you and mysteries you yet face until the warning bell for the end of the period sounds.
>>
>>4350893
“I can show you the base where we can speak further,” Artemis offers, “after classes let out considering you’ve stuck yourself into the appearances as a teacher. Mikage can you rally everyone up for a meeting?”

“Shouldn’t be a problem,” you nod and rise from the bench...though with all the answers you gave there is one thing you’re curious about.

As you get up you let your curiosity get the better of you, on multiple fronts.

“Oh, what happened with Toriko-sensei?” you question the alien Sailor Guardian.

“Well, I needed an in for this school considering the amount of lingering darkness I sensed here,” Kinzoku-sensei explains, “While scouting things out I happened upon your teacher begging the Principal for a short leave of absence. Something about the Spider incident being a bridge too far and needing to get out of the city for a bit. I fabricated what I needed to and threw myself into the top of the queue of candidates,”

Her explanation seems pretty straight forward, and she begins to explain how her Golden Bracers helped her beyond her innate magics as a Sailor Guardian.

“Really? Where’d you get those, I’ve been getting interested in making magical tech recently and could use some info and pointers,”

“Ah, Lady Galaxia makes these herself. They hold the power to detect Chaos, perform functionary magical tasks, and have the ability to purify and heal as though a principle Sailor Guardian of a system. The power of Galactica Scales!” she jangles them in their inert form as simple thing bands on her wrists rather than the true bracers they had been moments ago.

“Is that what you were ready to use on me?” you wonder aloud.

“Yes, I may not have Sailor Cocoon’s power of Silk Rebirth Metamorphosis,” she says with a nostalgic lilt, “but they can handle even the transformation of a mortal into a Phage,”

You nod at that, remembering the story your mother told of the fight against Shadow Galactica.

“Sailor Papillon,” Artemis proffers to Kinzoku-sensei, “Was planet Mau restored?”

As you make your way off of the roof, leaving Artemis to his rather important personal question, you double back up the other stairwell to check in on the south access area. Saori remains near to where you saw her, she’s pulled herself hand over hand along the fence toward the stairwell door when you arrive.

There is a trickle of drool to her grin as she turns to face you.

“Saori-chan? Are you alright?” you question and go to proffer a hand of concern on her shoulder.

“Mi-ka-ge-chaaaaaaan!” she wobbles while pushing off of the fence and trying to find balance for her naturally spindly frame before looking at you with a forceful attempt at sobering herself, “I wanted to...make sure things were cool on your roof meeting. While you were telling everyone I snuck...out here. Got a whiff of the butterfly dust. Butterfly dust? Moth dust? Poison Powder? Pokemon?”

She shakes her head trying to steady her faculties.

“It was like a disguise field haze...I got closer than anyone else on the roof because I was actively forcing against it,” she explains as you help her down the stairs and to the classroom, “This feels so good and mellow,”

You consider having words with Kinzoku-sensei about this power later.

“Do you want me to get you to the nurse?” you question your spymaster.

“No, it's...clearing,” she articulates slowly, “And I actually feel really... calm and relaxed. Like, none of my usual anxieties,”

“Okay,” you get to the hallways and she is a bit more stable on her own, “Oh, I almost forgot I made you something, my spymaster,”

Her eyes light up as you get to the classroom and hand her the packaged bundle of the uniform you made her. She holds it reverently and her body language begins trading back to her more jittery norm.

“Aww, and I didn’t bring you anything...wait, hold on. I have an Otome game you can borrow!” she dashes back to her desk and begins fishing something out of her bag.

Thrusting the computer game box into your hands, you regard the girl carefully. Fortune’s Beloved sits in your hands, and you’ve actually heard of it.

“I’m serious, if you need the nurse,” you offer before she cuts you off.

She smiles, with a vibrant energy before turning and curling down muttering to herself about how great it is to have friends like this who care about her now. She returns upright like a spring as you try to ask her if she’s together enough to spread the word of rally during free period, as her usual anxious energy returns.

You’re slightly regretting not eating lunch, and make plans to do so when the free period roams around. Saori promises she’ll see the task done as people filter back into the room from lunch period, the rest of your friends included...Keiko being helped in by Midori with a glaze to her look reminiscent of what Saori sported earlier. Isn’t it usually the moth who gets burned getting too close to the sun? You appreciate the irony of Keiko using her flying to make sure she was nearby as support, though you sigh that she got the same whammy on her that Saori managed to get.

The class period bell sounds.

I know its been a while but I hope to march things along. We still have a lot of stuff ahead. The four rogue shadows, the Aiba tournament, and-

Aw heck. I forgot to proffer the thing about getting a message to Moon via Papillon...I'll include that during the resume during free period.

Episode 155 Thread resume.

Classes continue, and it seems that the day will progress normally. Estra shoots you a look of concern over the distance of the day, though with a gesture you placate your worries about the additional extra terrestrial element in the mix. He’ll probably want to know more later but for now, things seem like they’ll be okay.

None of your remaining teachers ahead of the day, to your knowledge, are also aliens or magic in any way. Then again you had heard via gossip when you were trying to ignore most things that your classical lit teacher had been making applications to the Tomoe Institute for their Human Magical Aptitude Evaluation trials later this year. They’ve always held the fantasies born domestically and in the west in high regard, more than once you’ve heard them go on a rant about parts of The Journey West. It’s unusual for you but it's been a bit hard focusing on class recently.

Free period begins, and while Artemis is probably giving Kinzoku-Sensei as Sailor Papillon the grand tour and ringing up the remaining responsible adults. Meioh-san, Tomoe-sensei, Professor Tomoe, and your dad. While Saori, back to her usual senses, offers some direct whispers to first Kairi-chan and then Midori-chan she darts off before you can flag her back down, your gift bundle clutched to her chest and a floatiness to her step.

So, what will you do with the Free period?

Interlude: Galactica’s Penance

You look down at the Mau before you as his question lingers as your measures of magical defense and local crowd control dissipate. You know the history of the Shining Galactica and it’s predecessor of Shadow Galactica...because you were there. You sacrificed your world once before, to save one soul, and for many years were Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon and served the corrupt Galaxia on the fringes of the universe as one of her Sailor Animates. There is a pain in the white and moon crested Mau’s eyes that you’re familiar with. The pain and worry of being a parent.

He does not ask you this thing for himself.

“Mau and it’s Sailor Guardians are restored. She prospers under her own government and rule while being a member world of the Shining Compact.

You were there when Mau fell, and through all that has been suffered you were blessed to be there when it and countless worlds were restored.

“Then...we aren’t alone,” he sighs deeply in relief and nostalgic thought, “She isn’t alone,”

“No, there are many now who aren’t alone...but there are many who don’t trust these penitent acts fully,” you sigh deeply and think of the discord on your own world, and of the ultimate forgiveness of your Princess, before you smile sadly, “And why should they if its unearned,”

The Mau regards you carefully.

“Speaking from experience I take it,” he questions.

“Experience to earn back the trust of those betrayed,” you offer, “Which is why it is an honor to be sent to Earth. This world is widely known for its hand in the restoration of inhabited space, there are many who wait at the edge of space for this system to step into the broader context of space to welcome it and court it for Sailor Moon,”

“Sadly we aren’t so involved in governance here,” he explains and hops up onto the top of the fence, “Come on, there are some people I need you to speak with,”

“I would, but I still have a few classes to teach today,” you say sheepishly.

“Then when you’re done, I’ll show you to the Crown Arcade,”

Interlude: Mau Money, Mau Problems

You stand in front of the Arcade where papa works, and you’re a little wobbly. Even though you’re still very small, you’ve had to make due growing up rather quickly, mom said she was surprised you’re already all knees and elbows. Apparently this isn’t very normal for a Mau like you, and that being a Mau on Earth is in itself an abnormality.

She says that some of the magic used to save her life whilst she was about to have you may be a contributing factor for how quickly you’ve grown up.

And magic too, is something unusual. To many it needs to be a secret. You’re relatively sure you’re good at secrets, working as closely as you have with Mikage-chan and following her papa around sometimes at night.

You step into the infrared beam that controls the automated doors. It amuses you that humans can’t see it’s scintillating patterns, they can’t see or smell a lot of the things that are common to your awareness.

Ducking into the building quickly, you sidle up behind the booths. You decided today would be a day about seeing how you fit in with humans, you made a mess of things the time you managed to get lost from your now absent big sister, but you’ve been doing your level best since then to learn the areas around you so you don’t get lost. So you know where you need to be as a Guardian and Advisor to Mikage-chan and Koyomi-chan.

Waiting for an arcade patron to pass, because you’re stealth sufficient, you watch as they casually shake the large plastic box of steel balls they carry with a certain giddy effervescence as they stride out the door.

Though, you do hear the clink of falling balls. There is a crack in the bottom of his plastic box. After the whole wig fiasco from your day out, you learned how important things are to some people. Quick as a whip you bound out and scoop up the metal ball bearings.

“Mister Mister, you dropped these!” you call out as you tug on his pant leg before he clears the door.

The man is surprised, and in turn relieved. After patching the hole and gathering up what was lost, he offers you a number of them in thanks...though you’re confused at what to do with them. He seems to realize this.

“If you bring these balls over to the counter, you can get a few prizes or even money for the arcade,” he explains and points over to the counter where you see one of your dad’s employee’s.

With a bounding step you are there.

“Yeon-san Yeon-san!” you call out and come up to the counter you don’t yet clear.

“Oh, hello there little girl,” he says in confusion before looking about to realize you’re unattended, “Are you lost? Shouldn’t you be in school?”

“No silly! I’m Diana!” you pout at not being recognized.

It isn’t your fault humans can’t recognize you and it kind of frustrates you sometimes.
>>
>>4353597

After a short exchange, where you learn that your papa is out right now, you proffer forward the ball bearings and learn they are for a game called Pachinko. Apparently you might be too young for it, but Yeon exchanges them for some coinage he says you can use to play other games in the arcade if you’re so inclined as his boss’s daughter.

Pockets full of yen and so many possibilities before you, you can’t help but freeze up. You’ve watched the other girls play so many different games before that you’re not sure where to start. You’re practically vibrating with excitement, further augmented that you can also use the Yen to buy sweets and cookies! Humans are silly but they have some interesting systems.

A particular tone catches your ear, and with your inherent reflexes you’re upon it. There is something resonant to you about this game cabinet that is different from others. This older model of the Sailor V arcade game.

You round up with Kairi-chan, Midori-chan, and Keiko-chan to catch them up on the details of your meeting with Kinzoku-sensei. Gathering together not in the classroom but in one of the unoccupied stairwells, muted by the intervention of Midori-chan’s powers. You confirm to them her revelation as she is the mysterious butterfly winged Sailor Guardian who showed up to help during the Dragon fight and that Artemis is now handling some introductions for her with the responsible adults of your assemblage.

In turn this also involves explaining the concept of the Shining Galactica.

“A multi-planetary Sailor Guardian Organization?” Keiko questions, somewhat awed.

“This is actually the first I’ve heard of...this incarnation of it,” you explain while recounting what little you know of the previous version of Shadow Galactica.

And how Sailor Galaxia, supposedly the strongest Sailor Guardian who serves as champion of the curling of the Milky Way, was overtaken by Chaos when she tried to seal it away inside herself. And consumed the starseeds of more than half the galaxy in turn during that possession.

How she became it’s puppet and vessel, transformed physically by trying to shoulder it as a burden for all the horror and terror it put forth in the past throughout known space...

>Tell them of her identifying you as having been changed by Chaos
>Tell them of your own concerns over being a potential vessel of Chaos
>They know what you are, you don’t need to retread this ground.
>Write in

“But in restoring what she once destroyed, she’s apparently vowed to protect it all,” you explain as best your understand, “At least that’s what I inferred,”

“Alright then, so we have a Sailor Guardian on loaner, wait does she have a ship or something?” Midori inquires.

“It could be a teleportation power,” Kairi muses while briefly conferring in silence with Nephrite’s bound spirit, “If not outright ability to fly in space,”

“Yeah, that in mind I’ll probably ask her if she’d be willing to deliver a message to mom...or any of the girls mom’s with everything else we know that’s going on,” you muse aloud.

In turn, they fill you in on what’s been going on with the surveillance of the Rogue Quartet of Shadows.

“Last night, there were definitely people looking for them besides us. It was obvious enough to them, and they continue not to have noticed us,” Kairi-chan explains with some concern, “Men in cheap suits with psionic enhancements,”

“From the bugs we’ve set up they’re getting antsy. They won’t stay in their little hidey hole forever, they’re making plans to get out and maybe escape to the countryside. We don’t have a lot of time left if we want to make contact with them,” Midori-chan continues, “Ito-san has been sending hourly updates to the stake out group chat. So they’re still there for now,”

So...times running out on what to do about those four rogue shadows. And they explicitly are possessed of hostility to you, but maybe not the others...

You don’t retread the concerns over Sailor Papillon’s detection of what you are. The girls know, they know and have stood beside you through your need to consume negative emotions and shadows alike.

That you almost had to fight her about it is also something you don’t feel the need to go over with them. They likely expected there might be something happening, which is why your spymaster and the Sailor Guardian of the Sun got a little high for a few minutes...though as you’re considering the next move.

“I can’t be the one to make contact with them,” you reason for the repeated sensations of killing intent these four shadow girls have directed toward you, instinctually from fear of what you almost did to them in their proto-formative state.

There is a hush through the stairwell.

“Should we show up in force to speak peacefully but to match their number? Four to four to parlay with them?” Midori offers, “They’ll know we’re enemies of their makers...maybe we can bank on that?”

“No, they’ll take equal numbers as a threatening move. It needs to be one person to meet them in their lair while the rest of us take care of power injected bastards in cheap suits,” you hum and think before your eyes fall onto one of your assembled allies.

Her experiences with having literally been a monster. Her work to help others who have gone through what she has with some volume of support and understanding with the support group.

“Kairi-chan, I think for all you’ve done helping others who’ve been turned in this manner, you’re the only one who has a chance to actually open a dialogue with them,” you offer to the assembled group.

Midori-chan nods thoughtfully. Keiko-chan pats the red headed girl on the back. Kairi-chan is for a moment silent. There is a moment of uncertainty and then she scrunches her face up and resolves something, meeting your eyes with a fierce determination.

Helping others deal with the emotional fallout of monstrous transformation and possession has become a passion for your friend. You haven’t actually attended a meeting of her support group because, to an extent you feel like you don’t belong there. That being who you are isn’t fair to those who yet suffer even after they were saved. A guilty spark is conjured in your heart from what you did as the Red Eyed Beast to Hakumei-san, the girl turned into the purple dual bodied creature known as Supaku.

“I can do it...I know I can,” Kairi settles into confidence toward the task.

“Alright then…” you begin and nod firmly.

“Alright then, we do this tonight after touching base at the Crowne after this larger meeting with Sailor Papillon. If this goes well we’ll all be home for dinner; and possibly allow those girls to have a warm meal and not sleep in a kitted out hole in the ground,” you affirm to the group.

Midori slips out her phone and begins typing with some speed, possibly to let the others on the stake out’s schedule that this will be happening.

“Alright, I’ll have Kino-san break Ito-san and she can be in on the meeting and maybe actually meet people other than just us in all of this,” she reasons to herself before popping up from her phone, “Oh, it seems Saori-chan just confirmed relevant info dump about the meeting with this otherworldly Senshi to both Kinos, but your sister was not reachable,”

A sudden worry grips you.

“Why isn’t Koyomi reachable?” you question seriously your Knight Marshal.

“She just says she was in detention. Like, an administrative in school detention and not just in the hallway holding water or something,” Midori-chan reads with a quirked eyebrow, “Saori-chan is investigating the matter as far as she can before time runs out on free period,”

You actually may have a good idea why your sister might be in an administrative disciplinary action, at least in terms of motivation. You just don’t know what she could have actually done to earn it. You know that some bully of Kanari Kino’s was supposed to be pulling some prank on the girl today, and that you gave your sister the advice of…

Tentatively, you look forward to being very proud of your baby sister, biting your lips together to hold back laughter and barely suppressing an obvious smile, while all three of them zero in on your expression with some volume of worry.

And as Free Period comes to a close, you have some measure of timeline for what’s going on tonight. The last few classes of the day comes to an end and the scheduled club time begins on campus whereupon…

As classes break out, and you wait a bit for everyone due to the classroom cleaning schedule, people begin filtering into their post academic afternoon. Yoshi Sakurada watches you a moment as you assemble again with the close circle of tight knit friends that you’ve assembled since coming back out of your shell. As ever, seeming to give you space as he understands to a degree that you’re busy.

Understands to the degree of the secrets he knows. It’s an idle thought, but even as much as he knows about the world you truly inhabit, there is still this draw to want to keep him at a distance from it. To keep him in the realm of what’s normal, even if you want what comfort or succor he can provide like the day after he listened to you talk about what happened to your sister when you fought Kalunite…

With a nod and a wave, you leave him behind this time. He’ll approach you when he thinks you’re comfortable or you’ll approach him. The school remains a bustle with club activities which was something you resolved to try to get back into at one point or another, when you had time to do things that were normal like that.

There are still people to save. And true to form you’ll do it one person at a time. And to do that you need to rally your forces.

As you walk to the train station with Midori, Kairi, Keiko, and Saori you chat. You want to know what your Spymaster learned from her investigations at the middle school in regard to your sister’s detention.

“Okay, so apparently your sister did some mind fuckery psycho threatening things. She brought in a large sketchbook and during homeroom asked her teacher if she could show the class a number of sketch pieces,” Soari begins mildly shocked and exasperated, “Through the whole thing smiling and peppy just turning the pages to describe the project pieces she was working on until what she was describing and the way it was an expression about the importance of friendship, and then started the next pieces which upset a few kids. They weren’t graphic or anything but some nerd in her class said the pieces started getting like all Junji Ito style creepy where she started talking about how these pieces were about her feelings about thinking of what she’d do or feel if someone did something to hurt her friends. About the limits of compassion and understanding, and her own conceits of justifiable action,”

“That sounds...incredibly weird, creepily methodical, and not like your sister’s usual way of doing things,” Midori expresses some concern, “Like, at all,”

“Oh no, it gets BETTER,” Saori beams, smiling broadly, “Then for the last piece she apparently broke down that she knew exactly what some other girl in class was planning to do to hurt and humiliate one of her friends. Looked right at the girl from the front of the classroom and just said that she promises if she does a single thing to even a single hair on Kino-san’s head that she would punish her,”

“I’m assuming this is some embellishment in all this,” you sigh a bit.

“Probably, though threatening another student publicly like that apparently landed her in trouble, but then the girl she threatened got in trouble because this spiraled into it being found out that she had been sneaking supplies out of the science lab for some kind of ridiculous prank she was gonna pull on Kino-san,” Saori continues in an animated and stutterless recounting, “Like, it was some punishment game type stuff. They made a hair remover in science class and admitted they were gonna dose the little thunderer’s shampoo bottle during Phys Ed,”

It hangs there. You aren’t sure if you should be proud of, worried about, or upset with Koyomi for her chosen course of action. A part of you worried that her willingness to do something like this, plan it out so methodically, and execute it so theatrically is related to your influence on her when she literally and accidentally used magic to remove a piece of your extant emotional trauma from you.

These musings are cut short as you arrive at the train station, where Sasha sits on his Ural Sportsman whilst reading a volume of manga. The sound of rail brakes above sound as the train pulls into the station, and you catch sight of Koito Kino, your Zoisite Knight, hopping in among the commuters to make his way to relieve your Kunzite Knight from her current duty.

You’ve probably more than a few minutes to wait for him to relieve Hisako and her to catch another train back to you. As it speeds off, he sees the lot of you assembled and offers a hurried wave. You’d probably like to hear his first hand account of things later, or you’ll hear it from Kanari and Koyomi themselves at the Crowne Arcade. And so the group of you coalesce around your appointed Man at Arms of the Royal Guard.

Interlude: Hard Time Rabbit

You’ve been sitting here since the start of classes today, for the past few hours and through lunch. You do not regret what you did nor do you regret how you did it. When your big sister told you to protect the people you care about without a second thought you decided you wouldn’t do this reactively, but proactively.

Glancing across the detention room at your foe in this matter, she glares daggers at you. That there is such hate in her heart toward people you care about makes you both pity and dislike her.

“Miss Chiba,” the Principal slides the door to the room open and strides to where you are seated, while your bag and any materials remain in your classroom at your desk.

“Present,” you say and rise from the desk.

This was it, this is the chewing out. Today you were disruptive in a way a school administrator can probably not abide, but the planned assault and conducted theft you exposed.

“I spoke with your teachers about what happened today, and after consideration for your record of behavior and what you brought to light,” he concedes through a very sleight French Canadian accent before setting a small folder on the desk in front of you, “We’ll only be sending a note about today home about the incident with a recommendation toward some light counseling but not a demand, provided of course you apologize to Miss Kujo and Miss Kino for making this matter a public spectacle,”

The confusion on your face is probably evident, or maybe it’s disbelief as Principal Larson waits for your response.

Apologize? This is a conflict even now, and normally when you are faced with conflict that relies on social or interpersonal conflict you have a tendency to grab and wring your pigtails. Though there is conflict there is no contest to what you need to say now.

“You cannot ask me to do that,” you say firmly and thoughtfully with slow and deliberate language coupled with an expression many would find extremely uncharacteristic of you.

You are Koyomi Chiba, and true to any woman in your family you have an impossible capacity for forgiveness and acceptance. There is nothing you understand more than empathizing and sympathizing with the struggles of others and their feelings and motivation. However, you know what you are willing to apologize for and what you’re willing to accept an apology in turn.

“And why is that?” he crosses his arms and looks at you with a curious expectation.

“Because I’m not a liar, and I’m not sorry for what I said or what I did,” you say firmly, “And you shouldn’t make Kujo-san apologize to Kino-san either because you know it’ll be as hollow as she is!”

“How dare-” behind you Kujo-san stands up with a start to call you out on your words, and something just pushes inside you as you whip your head around and away from Principal Larson to meet her gaze.
>>
>>4354889

How dare you? No. How dare she. You’ve had time to think about this the past few hours you’ve spent in detention, you’ve reflected on what you did and thought about how the people around you would have handled this. And that you exposed her plan of assault and humiliation and revealed her theft, she has no leg to stand on. She can have and keep any explanations and justifications for her motives. She can get in as much trouble as the administration sees fit, because you’ve already taken what you need and sent the message to her that she can’t get away with what she’s done and is willing to continue doing.

She sees this in your eyes. It cuts her off and causes her pause before she sits down in a huff.

The end of day bell sounds.

You pick up the folder left on your desk.

Apologizing, even made under the duress of your arm twisted by the administration, would just embolden her as it takes the sharpness off of your threat. You will stand firm. You are in this moment righteous.

You are just.

“I was told my in school detention was for the full day. Is it being extended or am I free to leave?” you ask flatly to the Principal.

He says nothing. You’ve defied his offer in front of him and you don’t have much experience with this principal. Like most of the staff of the middle school he’s a foreign employee so he isn’t as bound by the more strict social orders and conventions of Japan. He makes a gesture to the open door beside him and you release a breath you didn’t realize you were holding.

“Thank you Principal Larson,” you manage without the circumstantial exasperation and frustration you’ve been sitting on today.

You’ve barely even cleared the threshold before he turns his attention to the girl with the curled drills behind you in the room.

“Now then, Miss Kujo,” he begins without breaking a stride from your earlier staredown, “You’re in a bit more trouble than Miss Chiba, and I’m afraid we’ll be escalating this matter,”

Even if it cost you time. Even if it costs you something of what other people think of you. This was worth the cost, and is something you can shoulder. For Kanari and Koito. For your family. For anyone you love. This is justice, and you know what you’ll be doing in celebration of achieving such justice.

Ice cream is justice.

“Koyomi?! You’re out!” Kanari-chan meets you as she’s in the midst of sweeping up the hallway outside of your classroom.

“Yeah, it was just a single day’s in school detention,” you wave it off, “Though Kujo-san is apparently in for a bit more trouble,”

“Yeah…” Kanari-chan glances down before up again to meet your eyes, “Look, earlier I told your sister I didn’t need anyone to protect me...but I appreciate that you stopped her from messing with my hair,”

“I’m not going to say you’re welcome,” you tell her flatly after a beat of awkward silence, “I’d do it again because you’re my best friend. Without a second thought,”

She looks at you, the mighty Zeus of your circle, uncertain and otherwise reflective.

“You definitely gave it a second thought though,” she intones, but not in the intended meaning, “You planned that and struck to put the fear of...Koyomi-chan are you okay? Is everything okay with you right now...I mean besides what happened at the park,”

“I’m fine,” you lay a hand on her shoulder, “I’m not on schedule, but let me help clean up and we can go to the Crowne after!”

“Yeah, yeah,” her expression softens but then firms up, “Oh, your sister’s spy- the awkward girl was over earlier. Letting us know that we need to meet up at the Crowne afterschool. There’s been a development with the...butterfly,”

“Alright!” you declare full of cheerful vigor, “Back to saving the world! It’s so much simpler than other problems,”

Episode 155 Thread Resume 2

You’ve arrived at the train station closest to your school and caught sight of Koito Kino catch and depart to relieve Hisako Ito from her current vigil on the four Rogue Shadows in the park near Infinity Academy. You wanted to introduce Hisako Ito, your newly appointed Kunzite Knight, along to the base and assemblage of the Senshi. Gathering up by Sasha and his bike with Saori Umeki, Keiko Sugimoto, Kairi Osaka, and Midori Mori.

“Hey,” Sasha offers greeting and places the manga, a weekly jump from the look of it, back into the sidecar of his bike, “So I heard from Kino-san that we’ll be meeting the new girl and the Butterfly Senshi,”

Right, this might be the first time Sasha would be meeting Hisako, you guess. He watched your fight with her at Yoshi’s show, which somehow feels so long ago.

“Yeah, Mikage-chan had a meeting with her on the roof and it was crazy!” Saori Umeki intones while trying to lean over the side car and catch a look at the discarded book, “Ooooo, the new one? Anyway there was like a disguise field of moth poison or something but I braved it to keep tabs on her and got really loopy!”

“There was almost a fight from the sound of things,” Keiko explains and then sighs to admit, “I got dusted too,”

You’ve got some time to wait before Hisako arrives and the lot of you can head over to the Crowne together. What to do, what to do…actually, you admit to feeling things are a bit crowded right now, but at the same time you feel a little alone. Maybe even momentarily superfluous. Midori-chan is keeping everything organized and running while you’ve been trying to relax and coming well into her role as Knight Marshal while you’ve been trying extra hard to take it easy.

“I’m kind of sad I missed seeing you so afflicted too,” you offer in a small sigh before looking from Keiko over to Midori and patting the girl on the shoulder, “Wrangling her while flying must have been a trip. Saori-chan was three sheets to the wind but at least it couldn’t literally carry her off,”

There is a frustrated groan that starts up deep within Midori’s throat.

“She couldn’t turn it off,” she slides her phone back into her pocket, “and kept trying to drift away. I was physically holding her on the ground until I got her back to the classroom,”

“Come on, I wasn’t that bad,” the shining Sailor Guardian of the Sun and reincarnated witch pouts.

“Well, sounds like an absolute blast of a day that we aren’t even close to being done with yet,” Sasha sighs and undoes something on his bike and pulls a balaclava out of a compartment in the sidecar and gestures over to Kairi-chan, “If I need to throw down with the guys searching for these Shadow girls while you’re down there I’m set to keep myself as unknown to them as I can be,”

Midori really has been trying to keep the loop going, if Sasha is informed of the plan so far formed.

Saori Umeki sees the balaclava and begins to softly laugh to herself, you see her slide the domino mask from her gift into her hand and begin scouring for the perfect time to show it off...though she pauses to start looking around at the foot traffic of folks uninvolved in your conspiratorial supernatural chicanery.

“I feel really bad about basically just having to talk to them while the rest of you run interference,” Kairi-chan sighs and glances down at Nephrite’s stone, “Then again they’re still incredibly powerful and if things go south my best bet will probably be to just get out of their way,”

“I believe in your ability to get through to them, Kairi-chan, 100%,” you say firmly and cross your arms to nod, “Though Sasha I think I have something better for you if it comes to that than a balaclava,”

Reaching into your satchel you retrieve the other parcel you’ve been carrying around today and hold it forward to the small boxer.

“I made these for you and Saori-chan. They’re uniforms and masks that you can don quickly,” you loop your fingers around your eyes in mimicry of a mask, “They don’t come with any actual magic for you to wield, but they’ll protect both of you, and your identities, while providing some minor enhancements,”

Unfolding the flap he reviews the material within, touching the military gray fabric with the golden trimming. There is a tightness that crosses his face, not a frown but a pucker on his lips before he shores himself up.

“Thank you, Mikage,” he says quietly, “I’m not used to getting gifts,”
>>
>>4355588

“Why not,” Midori frowns a bit, “You’re a part of this, and you’ve definitely more than earned it for putting up with all this madness so far,”

“Earning something...yeah that sounds like something my coach would say,” he sighs with a smile and sets the parcel in the sidecar of his bike and holds up the mask.

“So, any developments at the Aiba tournament?” you query at the investigation he’s helping conduct at what was supposed to be a defining competition of his young life.

This makes Sasha truly grouse.

“It is incredibly hard to gauge if anyone is acting differently because I don’t know most of them well,” he shakes his head, “But Amazonite has definitely inserted herself into the staff, I think she’s waiting to pick one or more competitors over the course of the tournament, I thought she was going to approach me but she hasn’t yet. And I found one of the vectors for what their planning, few of these were spent in locker room trash cans,”

From his pocket he withdraws something that is immediately familiar. They look like emergency allergic reaction epinephrine pens, though with handwritten labels. The three Sasha holds read as metabolic control, prescient reflexes, and invincible will. He only holds them out long enough for the lot of you to see them before secreting them back into his coat, lest they draw noticeable attention.

“This stuffs new on the street and a total mystery,” his frown deepens, “They won’t be testing for this stuff at the tournament, but word on the street is there are tons of varieties of these things now. Psychic powers in a needle,”

You were afraid these would show up again. Not that you can let it show you’re afraid of these things. You wonder if a Shadow can be enhanced by these things...and how dangerous that could be.

“The guys prowling tonight will probably have a few of these each,” you offer, “So, everyone be ready for them to be able to do things normal people can’t,”

While you’ve been talking a few trains have come and gone. The whole lot of you are so engrossed in the matter of the Psionic Power Drugs that you fail to notice the approach of a friend.

“Hey Miks,” Hisako Ito walks up with her hair tied back and under bandana, “Hey everyone,”

“Oh, Ito-san!” you turn and offer her a hug, in juxtaposition to the way you resisted her hugging you after your first slugfest, “Let me introduce you to Sasha,”

“Oh, yeah I remember you. You were one of the spectators at the alley fight,”

“Yeah, what style was that anyway. I saw aspects of Judo and Sambo,”

Conversations begin to form in the ensemble. A whole assemblage that starts walking together toward your goal of the Crowne Arcade, Sasha walking his bike alongside the rest of you.

It's...comfortable, so many of your friends are together like this. Even if this is the eve of a major operation it feels good not to be walking forward into this alone. Briefly you feel sad that Koito Kino had to miss the larger briefing so this could also be Hisako’s introduction to the base. Your earlier worries about feeling superfluous are melting away as you all walk together and join in the conversation and speculation.

Tonight is the night that it all comes together. How you proceed with matters for the Aiba Tournament will depend on tonight.

You arrive at the Crowne Arcade, feeling more comfortable about yourself but perhaps a little light headed.

There’s something gnawing at you for a moment, and a glance over to the cafe as everyone enters the Crowne Arcade makes you certain of what it is you need. You can’t help but smile as you see four already sitting together.

The friend whose peril pulled you to action after too long in the dark, whose resolve in the face of your warning inspired you. The friend who felt betrayed by your seeming inaction, and but refused to believe in anything but your best. The friend who kept your secret out of childish fear and loyalty, and gave you the tools to defy the worst future you could imagine. And your sister, who there is nothing you wouldn’t do to protect or avenge.

“Hey, before heading down we should get some snacks,” you pause there in the entryway as everyone walks past, only to pause at your suggestion, “Together,”

There is a certainty in that, saying together. Wanting these things. A big part of what you’ve been doing in the past few days have revolved around you not pushing yourself too hard...spending a lot of time alone because you’d been running too hard to do everything...everyone trying to keep you together and keep what you’ve started going.

They turn to look at you. Not everyone that you’ve brought into your life in these past few weeks...but most of them. Your friends. A friend you’ve reclaimed after leaving them in shared guilt. Friends from the screen both sealed in moments of exulted conflict and competition. Friends you’ve saved and whose light and sun you stand under defying enmities old and recent. And one you pulled out from a dark and forgotten place like the one you pulled yourself out of.

And it’s not just them. There are twin cries of excitement and you turn again to the arcade space beside you. Two girls cheer on the pads of a co-opt dance game, both of whom at different points have been your charges in their early childhood, a light you’ve unexpectedly healed and a light you made sure to foster in her recent accelerated growth.

You know moments like this are the kind of thing you find overwhelming sometimes... That you’re all together. However right now it’s somehow a balm and you feel really...just happy. Despite everything you’ve done and been through, that this is it. This is a taste of what you’re fighting for.

“Sure,” you’re not sure who says it, but the momentum of your group shifts into the cafe.

And in this moment, you feel confident that you’re going to win this. Together.

Interlude: Planetary Downgrade

The digital reticle refocuses on the misshapen and dented playground slide as she flips through her available filters. Behind you sits a taped off broken wood and steel bench before the safety cone marked gouge in the walking trail beside the playground. Far above in the distance are the towers of the nearby Infinity Academy. This is Sugawara no Michizane Park, the heart of a recent series of paranormal disturbances.

There is a sharp sound, a digital recreation of an analog shutter snap. Market tested to provide a nostalgic and tactile memory for portions of the consumer base and familiarize the rest with the noises a camera is supposed to make.

“And that should be enough for tonight’s blog post,” you muse to yourself in the not yet waning light of the afternoon before strolling through the park a bit more.

The monster muggers, as they’ve been called colloquially online, have garnered some attention amid everything going on. Along with the sudden quiet of their activity in the last few days. A cacophony of the paranormal has sounded in the past few weeks and it’s made this side hobby of yours come alive.

Alive enough for you to start coming to Azu Juuban to start taking photos. Still on your route tonight is the municipal highschool here. You made it to the park downtown first to grab snaps of where the Sailor Senshi supposedly fought a dragon.

Before this started, and your passion for the weird and unusual took you from just reading about mythology, cryptids, and urban legends...you were always looking for an outlet. School was always boring and easy and you never really pushed to do well enough for any extra or special placement. Your mom was busy more often than not, but when she was home she was home, so while you could just while time away playing video games that wasn’t the only thing you did…

Now. Now you were writing, doing short interviews when you could. Posing questions online. You were going to places where disturbances reportedly happened and you were taking photos. If your mom knew you came all the way to Juuban Ward from Nerima Ward on a school night she’d probably flip.

You sigh to yourself a little and begin flipping through the pictures you’ve taken. No, she wouldn’t flip. She would very calmly ask if there was something the two of you could talk about and be really reasonable and understanding about things. She came home hurt and she’s still out doing whatever for work and you’re…

You’re still feeling more alone. You’re still feeling unchallenged.

Your name is Ranko Meioh, third year junior high student, thirteen years old...and maybe you came all this way to prove a point or find some excitement.

Something catches your eye in one of the broader photos surveying the scene and you parse your fingers across the screen of your smartphone to zoom in. For some reason a gorilla of a man searching for something in the bushes at the back of the playground in a cheap suit and shades has a third eye on his forehead as he looks up and to the side. Obviously a trick of the light…

Obviously?

You creep around the place and find more than normal park goers, likely scared off by ongoing phenomenon, you see more of these guys. Doing your best to sneak around, you find one of them stabbing themselves in the arm in a public bathroom before their veins flush blue and the temperature nearby suddenly drops a noticeable range of degrees.

Enough to make you tighten the cutesy mascot themed hoodie you wear because it's apparently inappropriate to wear a Kigurumi in public.

This is getting tense. As the sun hangs lower in the sky there are more of these guys...and you briefly witness them doing impossible things. Rumors had reached you about drugs showing up on the streets that gave people psychic powers, but you thought that was really a rumor and you’re getting worried.

Even as you start to hurry out of the park, you feel eyes are upon you.

“Hey, Kid!” he’s in front of you, how did he get in front of you?

The third eye you snapped earlier, it’s him. Actually seeing it the thing seems to float in front of him more than be a part of him. The pinprick iris settles on you, stares deep into you.

“Wh-what!?” you bark at him and back up, unsure of what is even going on.

“Hmmm...you’re not what I’m looking for,” he muses, “but you’re not something normal either,”

His eye flares and a wave of yellow energy seems to fall around you in a sleepy aura...except something jumps inside you. Something sparks. Reddish violet light rolls off of you responsively. This response surprises you and bites back against this haze. As he shields himself with raised arms you can’t help but turn and flee out of the park. Between nearby buildings you dart into already darkening alleyways, that remain illuminated by whatever glows ahead of you.

You are entirely unaware that there were more than just these suited thugs on the prowl tonight. Entirely unaware that a young man swapping between video feeds on his phone had seen your plight in real time and was rushing to aid before circumstances changed. Instruments you’ll eventually hear about in the depths of infinity academy going wild at the sparkling start of this apotheosis as the world around you stills to a crawl.
>>
>>4364010

The world falls grey and still as the soft light coming from your forehead lights the way ahead of you. A glance over your shoulder saw the man and others frozen in their attempted pursuit. A bird suspended in mid wingbeat.

Curling into a crouch in the alleyway, your heart is beating faster than you’ve ever imagined. Holding up your phone you are relieved to find it still persists with you in the forward motion of events. With trepidation concern you raise it to take a selfie before you make any further moves.

The digital mock camera snap echoes in this quiet world.

On your brow burns a sigil you can’t identify but of which you possess some familiarity. You’ve seen it on some of your mother’s jewelry and never given it a second thought.

You’ve still got a network signal somehow, and you won’t waste it. Cropping the glowing brand that floats above your skin you run a reverse image search in momentary confusion and concern. It is an astrological symbol, a planetary sign of Pluto.

“...Pluto’s not a planet though,” is all you can really muster and parse to yourself in this moment of concern.
