Welcome to the House Redhand quest! We take on the role of Victara Redhand, eldest daughter of the family. We are ironborn and we kick ass. For a 14 year old.

Previous Threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=House%20Redhand

Last time on House Redhand: A Song of Salt & Iron…

Your land was attacked by a strange band of Faithful, named the Brothers. After banishing the foes, you investigate their activity in Banefort, the nearby city in the westerlands. You uncover a connection to the Iron Islands through Lady Banefort’s septon, Ormand, along with letters implicating a greater conspiracy: a holy war against the ironborn. You rescued Septa Jenny, who has information from working with the Brothers, and picked up a sworn sword, Blacklion, as witnesses to Lord Balon Greyjoy.

You have convened with other ironborn nobility on Pyke, for a feast in commemoration of Quellon Greyjoy, who just passed to the Drowned Halls. You had an amorous and drunken night with Maron Greyjoy, a childhood friend, and Rhia Drumm, part of the hated family yours broke off from centuries ago. You’ve just met Rhaegar Targayren, the guest of honor, and are enjoying the feast…

(Pic related for Victara's appearance)

-16/01/280 AC-

You decide to leave Lady Herra to her own devices. Perhaps she’s just not used to people? She did seem quite awkward earlier, staring at you so intently. You push the older woman from your mind and make your way to your friends. This time with no kingsguard intercepting you.

It looked like Maron was surrounded by Greyjoy men, you and Rhia the odd ones out. “Victara!” Maron exclaims, his hand holding a mug of ale once again. “Are you enjoying the feast?”

All you could think of was the flashes of memory from the night you shared with the Greyjoy and Drumm. “Aye, it’s lovely. I’m sure your grandsire is smiling at his people celebrating so.”

Maron gave a grim nod. “Lord Quellon was a good man. Fought against the Maelys Blackfyre and the Ninepenny Kings. Told me when I was just a little shit how Barristan Selmy, right over there,” he pointed to Rhaegar’s group, “slew that two headed freak. Saw the duel with his own two eyes.”

Rhia clapped her mug to the tabletop. “To Quellon Greyjoy. What’s dead may never die!” She and the rest of them downed their drinks.

“But rises again, harder and stronger,” you finish, giving her a smile. She looks back at you, stone faced.

“Well said, well said!” Maron says, exhaling. “I’ve a proposition for you, Vic. And you, Rhia.” The Drumm girl perked up at the words. “It’s been too long of a peace. Aye, it has its benefits and whatnot, but by god, it makes us ill-equipped to face hardship. Not to mention the lack of booty,” Maron grinned at his words, and the Greyjoy men laughed heartily. “I want to get an expedition together. I want to go reaving in the Stepstones or the Summer Islands. Some lords are whispering how weak our generation is. I want to show them we’re ironborn through and through. You have your own ships, yes?”

“Of course. I captain the Sea Dragon and my father has a decent enough fleet,” you answer.

“My Bitch-Queen and harpies are ready. Whatever Redhand brings, we’ll bring double. I’m in.” Rhia smiles, cocksure. It seems the rivalry between your houses has flared up again within her mind.

Maron holds out his hands. “Excellent! Wherever we go, we need good men. Ready to kill and loot. We’ll honor the Old Way abroad. What say you, Victara? Will you come with us?”
>>
>>4370663

Before you can answer, a Greyjoy guard comes up to you. “Lady Victara?” You nod to the man. “Lord Balon wishes to see you in private. He’s in the war room,” he points to the side door behind the Seastone Chair. The time had come. You bid Maron and Rhia farewell, and you and Yann leave the hall and the feast behind.

Maron’s words whirl about your mind. A reaving expedition abroad? The idea excited you, but the thought of leaving your family behind makes you sullen.

>Go on the Expedition. Father, Balon, and Rhaegar can handle the Brothers. We have a royal hearing us out!
>Stay behind. Although the situation is being handled by those higher than you, you’d feel bad leaving your family behind at this dire time.

While thinking in the hallway to the war room, you hear the door behind you, the one you’d just come out of, burst open. A man with a red mane and beard has a deep frown. “I’m Arryk Drumm,” he says taking off his leather gloves. “And I just heard you fucked my sister, you greenlander-looking shit. That true?” He’s also red in the cheeks, deep into his drinks.

>Talk down the drunken Drumm

Very selfish of us if we leave this soon, we must follow this plot till the end.

Can we at least see Balon and Rhaegar's reaction before deciding whether we want to stay? I want to get a sense whether they are taking this seriously enough and what next actions they propose taking before deciding if it's safe enough to leave or not. So can we decide this after the meeting? The choice is in our head after all, and we won't be answering Maron before the meeting.

Yes, this decision is more to gauge audience want. A bit meta, yes, but we can make the real real decision after the meeting and what not.

“Do you truly believe I did that, Arryk?” You ask the Drumm man. “There’s bad blood between our families, but come now. Surely you wouldn’t want to start a scene here, in Pyke?”

“I sure don’t give a shit about that,” he says, lurching forward with his fists up. Yann moves to his side, distracting him. You surge forward and give him a hardy knee to the groin. Arryk falls to the side, groaning.

“Enjoy that,” you say, turning to the war room. He stayed there, and you turn the corner to the war room. A kingsguard and a Greyjoy guard stand at the door, and they let you through.

The royal and the Greyjoy sit at the round table, a parchment map of Westeros dominating the table top. “...And you trust these two?” Balon asks your Father, standing next to Blacklion and Jenny.

“Yes, my lord. They risked their lives to tell the truth,” he says, glancing to you as you walk up. “My daughter here also acquired those letters and the Banefort sigil.”

Rhaegar cleared his throat. “How did you get this evidence, my lady?”

“I stole it from a septon working for Ormand. The leader,” you then recall what Blacklion and Jenny told you. “These two say Ormand is manipulating Lady Banefort for his needs.”

Balon makes a disapproving grunt. “I don’t trust this hedge knight. Who says the Brothers didn’t send him, to ‘rescue’ Victara and Jenny, and try to fan these flames?”

Rhaegar taps on the table. “I trust Blacklion, because I sent him to investigate the Brothers.”

You look to the hedge knight. “Now will you tell us your name?”

He laughs, nodding. “My name is Raymun Vikary. Sworn sword and Rhaegar’s eyes and ears.” A royal agent. You can’t help but feel like you were right all along.

“Any other secrets you’d like to tell us, Your Grace?” Balon asks, giving the royal a grim look.

He laughs. “Nothing now, Lord Reaper. But I will speak to Lord Tywin about this. Anyone in the westerlands is his responsibility. Doubly so when a noble is encouraging the smallfolk to shed their neighbor’s blood. I will speak to him personally on the way back to King’s Landing.”

“Thank you, Your Grace!” Father says, lowering to one knee. You follow his lead, repeating his words.
>>
>>4373483
“Out, all of you,” Balon commands. “I have words to share with the Targaryen here.” You and all the others do the same. Only the kingsguard and Raymun stay in the room.

“That went better than expected,” Father comments.

Yann nods. “It’s lucky the prince was on his way here.”

“Back to the festivities,” Father says simply. “Unless you have something else to do?”

“What… Should I do?” Septa Jenny asks. You think of the best course of action for the septa.

>Suggest she join the household
>Suggest she return to the westerlands with Rhaegar

You also mull over what to do during the rest of the feast.

>Return to the feast hall
>Try to find Herra Kenning
>Go to the courtyard. Finger dancing or brawling sounds good.

Just a little summary? Hmm...
"The story of House Redhand and Victara begin with a disturbance by the Brothers, a band of Faithful wanting to bring down the ironborn. You investigate Banefort, their origin point, and find evidence against their activities. You travel to Pyke and meet Maron Greyjoy and Rhia Drumm."

“Would you like to join our house?” You ask the septa. She shows surprise, but no disgust. “Not just for protection but as an advisor. Mother would love to have you,” you smile.

“That’s a wonderful idea,” Father speaks. “Unless you would rather not, Septa Jenny?”

The septa takes in a few breaths, looking at the floor. She meets your gaze with resolve. “If there are even a few ironborn like this house, then not all of you are monsters. I would gladly join you.”

“Excellent,” Father claps once. “Welcome to Redhand. But, all of you, let’s not make this known. Not when all the lords are gathered here.” You nod, seeing the wisdom of his words. “Now, I’ve sadly have more small talking to do with people I haven’t seen in years. Care to join me, Victara?” He smiles mischievously.

“No, Father. I think I’ll enjoy the salt air in the courtyard,” you lie. He and the septa bid you farewell, leaving you and Yann walking back down the hallway. “Good. Looks like Arryk Drumm is not waiting for us.”

“Maybe he’ll bring friends with him next time,” Yann shrugs. “But what’s your plan?”

“I need to find Lady Herra. I don’t trust her.” Yann nods at your words. “We saw her across the hall earlier. Which means…” You think of the castle’s layout for a moment. “She’s in the Bloody Keep. Or she went past that to the Sea Tower.”

“The Bloody Keep? Sounds lovely.”

“It’s the guest quarters. Some river kings were killed in there.”

“I’m sure the Bloody Keep is well guarded then. And the Sea Tower?”

“More of a lookout tower and a solar, I believe,” you struggle to remember. “That will probably have a lot less guards about.”

Yann moves his mouth in thought. “Sneaking would probably be better without me around. The Greyjoys probably took all the torches this dreary place had and put them here in the hall,” the sellsword looks to you. “I can at least keep a lookout here if she comes back.” Yann takes a glance around the hall. “I don’t see Osric anywhere… Odd. I’m sure I just can’t see him. So, what should we do, Victara the Andal?”

I'm getting a whiplash from the father's attitude. Last thread he wanted to kill that septa who came in our lands when there was no proof against her (which was why we let her go in good faith). He came to know of her treachery too and wanted nothing to do with people of the Faith. Now he's only too happy to have another septa advising our mother? I thought he would be the one pushing back if we chose to bring the septa with us.

"I can't be with her ALL the time, Lia." -Yann Tissar, right before Lia kills him. 255-280AC.

But on with the actual post.

>Bloody Keep
>Keep a lookout

“Stay here and I’ll take a look in the Bloody Keep,” you say to Yann, taking your Redhand cloak pin off and putting it in your pocket. You adjust the red gauntlet of your house further back on your belt. You keep your signet ring on, but turn it so the sigil isn’t face up. All you have with you is your dagger and your wits. “If you see her, keep your eyes on her as best you can. Report when I get back.”

“Yes, my lady,” he says with a sarcastic bow. You give him a look before walking toward the guest quarters. No errant Drumms or guards or kingsguard block your way--this time. You keep your eyes ahead of you, snaking through the gathered mass of ironborn. The glances you steal to your sides show no sign of Father, or Jenny. You push them from your mind as you approach the guard.

He offers no resistance or even an idle glance, drinking his horn of ale as you pass. The great wooden door is ajar, leading to a great stone bridge. You thank the Drowned God this was not one of the rope bridges. You cross it easily enough, but the sun blinds you, poking out from behind the Bloody Keep. It was low, lower than you thought it would be. But the shadows it casts are deep and dark. The stone bridge aligns with the small island that the Bloody Keep rests on--you think you can slide down it and enter through one of the windows. Whomever built this part of Pyke Castle clearly didn’t think of a siege, you think to yourself.

There is also the guard up ahead. He doesn’t seem to notice you yet--you maybe able to lie to him, saying you’re a servant girl. Or flaunt your noble signatory items and get into Father’s guest room. How to make your entrance…

>Sneak in through a ground floor window

Fighting.
>>

>you want us to be the equivelant of a talented strategist with one skirmish under our belt I don't really believe thats worth leveling it up
And Fighting or Deception 4 is?
That would put us, a 14 year old girl, just barely below an adult knight of the Kingsguard, and given our better agility we'd stand a fair chance of winning in unarmoured combat.

Remember, Warfare 3 is only a cut about the average person. It's someone with a bit of natural talent or just a few hours training.

If we don't upgrade Warfare however we're severely limited. We'd be able to give basic orders to the elite unit and probably order them to reform if disorganised but we couldn't do much more, we'd need to be rolling well above average to order them into a shield wall or anything like that. It's even worse with the veterans, even something simple like ordering an ambush would be difficult and forget about rallying them after a rout.
>>
>>4376903
>Lie to the guard, say you’re a servant
Warfare 3

>>4377572
While I agree that we need warfare, Fighting 4 still wouldn't put us on an equal footing to knights. They have traits specialized for fighting and tankier endurance which we do not have that would make us vulnerable on long grueling fights.

Sure, we've got 1 less in Fighting and Endurance but our Agility and Awareness mean we've got a higher combat defence and we're likely to go first, forcing them to eat injury penalties before we do. I'm not saying we're equal to a Kingsguard but we're not far off.
>>
>>4377572
You raise a good point about fighting and deception, however to me it makes more sense considering our activities to rank up something associated with such activities, deception was the first thing that came to mind in regard to that.

Ranking up Warfare is just ranking it up to be good at it without any story imputus behind i besides thats its coming up.
>>
>>4376903

Deception has my vote. I agree that ranking up warfare is not fitting with what's happened so far in the story. Abilities should go up from experienced play, not to anticipate future play.

While I do like the thought of "leveling through use" type of EXP spending, like in Elder Scrolls, this is also not as open as the video games. If we go by the caveat of "only spend EXP on things we've done to this point" then I may write us into specific Abilities. I don't think it'd be fair to only limit level up options to things we've used. But I do encourage this kind of talking!

As for what to level up, we actually have a tie between Deception and Fighting. So I'll call for a new vote, just between these two.

Shit, you right. My bad.
>Sneak in

Using the shadows and the sun’s placement to your advantage, you lower to a crouch and shimmy down the side of the bridge. Now out of his line of sight, the guard doesn’t notice you peek into the nearest window. You see no one and nothing extraordinary about the room, and since you’re out here, you decide to comb the whole perimeter before entering.

You find the Bloody Keep has spacious rooms for guests with high ceilings. Not nearly as high as the great hall, but certainly higher than most rooms in a castle. Finding nothing noteworthy in any ground level rooms, you hop into the last window, seeing the door to it already open. You put on your best servant girl demeanor, shoulders up slightly and big worried eyes. Just in case. The hallway between the rooms is silent, eerily so. You take the sole flight of stairs and notice that each door has a sigil engraved on the wood.

Yet even here there are no guards, but the doors here are all shut tight. You surmise the ground floor rooms are for general guests, while the ones here are for nobles. You pass the leviathan of Volmark, the scythe of Harlaw, and the cod of Codd, before turning the corner and finding the upturned gauntlet of Redhand. You walk up to it, quietly, carefully, when you hear a murmur. It’s muffled by stone walls, but you go for the nearest shadow regardless. You peek out, and see two doors down, the lightning hand of Kenning. As you approach, the sounds of talking grow louder.

That’s when you hear shuffling footsteps from around the corner. Retreating to the shadows again, you catch a hearty laugh from the room. A very familiar laugh. Father’s. You’ve not the time to ponder, settling into your cover before an elder comes forward.

Despite the elder woman’s hood and cloak, you catch wisps of brown hair streaked with silver. Her motherly and kindly face. You now know better. Septa Netta, right before you, in the halls of the Greyjoys. Her deception of her true intent back on Red Isle incite you. She’s obviously going toward the Kenning door, clutching a rolled parchment. Your heart races in anger.

Victara is, as far as we know so far, the heir to the House. I think this enough to justify training in Warfare when she's at that "coming of age" age.

We told her what would happen if she came back. No mercy

Greyjoys are pretty hardcore traditionalists they won't take kindly to a proselytizer on Pyke

Exactly my thoughts on the matter. Like I posted before, level 3 is the level for anyone who's had even the slightest bit of training. We've clearly had the weapons training to lead a reaving party, you'd assume we'd have the leadership training as well.
