You are Raishō Naori, mercenary ninja and former member of Akatsuki.

You’ve decided to at least pay Tsunade the courtesy of informing her of your latest decision… who knows, she may even be able to use this and the assassination attempt last night as reasons to apply more political pressure to the Raikage. If she does, you can finally turn this whole mess to your advantage and start making some real headway.

So to be polite, and also respectful of the fact that the Hokage may be hung over this morning, you go through the appropriate steps of actually walking in the front door, using the stairs, and waiting outside her office until Shizune-han comes out and fetches you.

“Good to see last night left at least one survivor,” Tsunade grumbles from behind her desk. “And here I had the nerve to give you a warning not to drink too quickly.”

“What do you need?”

“Yeah no,” you muse, “not here because of a need. I wanted to tell you that I’ve decided to work under the assumption that Akatsuki will be attacking your village and Naruto-kun as their next move.”

“Whyzat?”

“Because it’s more likely the remaining leadership holds a grudge against Konoha,” you explain, “for one thing. Second reason is that turning up in Kumogakure may cause more problems if last night is anything to go by.”

“You may be right,” Tsunade admits. “Is Nii Yugitō alright with that?”

“She agrees with the reasoning,” you shrug. “Even if she doesn’t like it.”

“How’re you preparing?” she enquires.

“I’ve secured flak jackets for the others,” you explain, “and a set of armor for myself. It’s something I’ve been mulling over for a while.”

“Your call,” Tsunade leans forward, putting her forehead on the table. “But it sure sounds like you’re not expecting to beat Akatsuki by sneaking, so that’s the main advantage of a flak jacket gone.”

“I’ve seen Pain fight,” you remind her. “He was about as subtle as a kick to the teeth.”

“Alright,” Tsunade agrees, still face-down. “I’ll tell Shizune to tell the jōnin to tell their teams to expect you if it comes to that. How will we contact you?”

“Same way as anyone else,” you explain. “Chakra flow through a hiraishin-marked kunai. I’ll bring us in right to you.”

“Including Yugitō-san?”

You shake your head. “It’ll probably be shadow clones of Yugitō, Fū, and Karin. I suspect Sasuke-kun will want to come for real… after everything this is still his home.”

>>4392651
“One more thing,” you continue. “Could you maybe try to lean on the Raikage a bit more heavily?”

“Howso?”

“Get him to at least consider letting me and mine help if things get as bad as I suspect they will?”

“He’s proud,” Tsunade rolls her head on her desk. “And his pride blinds him to any alternatives that don’t suit his pride. So unless you’re willing to return Yugitō-san to Kumogakure I don’t see the Raikage’s position changing much.”

“Yeah no, if I do that she and Kumo become the main target,” you shake your head. “And there will be a massive attack there. I won’t gamble with her life, or the lives of the bystanders who’d get caught up in it.”

“I’d rather be seen as a villain than go back to being one.”

Tsunade is quiet for a few moments before shifting her position so that she’s resting her chin on her arms. “I respect that… I really do. So I’ll see what I can do when we discuss his assassins… tomorrow. I just can’t promise you anything.”

“I appreciate it,” you bow politely. “Thank you, Tsunade-han.”

“You’re a sweet kid,” she muses, turning her head and settling in a little bit. “You’ve more than earned this much… just… be sure to close the door quietly on your way out.”

“Okay.”

You head out into town, wandering for a little while, trying not to think of anything in particular… until you run into a stroke of luck.

“Chōza-han!” you greet the now-jōnin. “Great timing, I’d like to ask you for directions.”

Chōji, who’d been walking a pace or two behind his father and to the left, steps forward.

“Don’t you mean me?” he asks with a frown.

“No,” you reply, “I knew you were there, Chōji-kun. But I really am asking Chōza-han.”

The elder Akimichi scratches thoughtfully at his head. “Do we know each other, young lady?”

“This is Raishō Naori,” Chōji observes. “She’s… a bit complicated. Maybe it’d be better if Shikamaru explained it to you, thinking about her makes my head hurt.”

“We’ve actually met,” you tell Chōza-han. “On your mission in Rōran twenty years ago.”

“Now, how could that be possible?” he asks you politely.

“There was a temporal incident,” you explain, “it’s all recorded in the Hokage’s files.”
>2/3
>>
>>4392658
“Then I hope you don’t mind me asking if you can prove that?”

You shake your head. “Not at all. Your team was made up of you, Minato-han, Aburame Shibi-han, and a very young Kakshi-sensei. We worked together to protect the princess Sāra from a minister calling himself Anrokuzan, who wanted to use the power of the Ryūmyaku to create a puppet army.”

“My presence there, along with Naruto-kun’s and Yamato-sensei’s, was why Minato-han erased your memories at the end of the mission. Unfortunately for him, Minato-han didn’t realize that he had missed one of my shadow clones, who retained the memories, eventually transferring them to me just last month.”

“Well that’d be a very specific and detailed lie to tell,” Chōza-han muses. “Okay then. Good to see you again, evidently. What did you need?”

“I’d like directions to Kurenai-sensei’s home,” you tell him.

“Ah,” Chōza-han nods curtly. “I can also tell you where Asuma-han’s hospital room is.”

>Visit Asuma-han in the hospital.

You decide to start with Kurenai-sensei, in hopes that she can give you an idea of what to expect when you see Asuma-sensei later on. So you follow the directions Chōza-han was polite enough to give you, and soon arrive at a nice-looking bloc of apartments. You find the right number, 207, and knock at the door.

After a few moments, the door opens to reveal an obviously surprised Kurenai-sensei.

“It’s… you?” she stammers.

“… is that a problem?” you ask earnestly. “Cause if it is I can...”

“No, no problem!” Kurenai-sensei insists. “I’m sorry, you just surprised me, that’s all. Please, come in, I’ll make you some tea.”

“You don’t have to,” you insist as Kurenai sets about brewing.

“I’ve already started,” she tells you, “so it’s no trouble at all.”

“Okay then,” you reply, standing awkwardly in the entry room.

Eventually you kick off your sandals and take a few tentative steps inside, stepping up out of the entryway and into a sitting room with two big windows, outside of which are hanging boxes full of plants. Below those windows, which let in the filtered, indirect light of the mid-afternoon sun, a baby stirs.

She doesn’t cry, or raise a fuss. Instead she looks up at you with big, red eyes just like her mother’s as you find yourself kneeling next to her crib.

“Hey little one,” you muse in a soft voice, reaching through the bars of the little baby-jail and wagging your finger for the prisoner’s amusement. “How are you?”

Kurenai’s daughter grabs your finger with her tiny little hand, and giggles… you are completely out of your element, and you can practically feel your IQ dropping a little more every second. But you’re also strangely okay with that.

“She’s painfully adorable, isn’t she?” Kurenai muses, coming in from the kitchen and setting down two cups of freshly-brewed tea. “Her name is Mirai.”

“Mirai,” you repeat, taking a seat. “It’s a nice name. I see she has your eyes.”

“And her father’s hair,” Kurenai smiles. “Speaking of which, you were almost her godmother you know.”

That catches your attention. “Really?”

Kurenai-sensei nods quietly. “It’s because of you that Mirai will grow up knowing her father’s face… even if she hates it right now. We’re pretty sure it’s the beard she objects to… so she and I will just have to agree to disagree on that.”

>>4393811
“I… don’t deserve that much credit,” you insist. “I didn’t even know you were expecting when all that happened.”

“All the same, you saved Asuma’s life,” Kurenai points out. “You didn’t have to do that. You didn’t owe him anything, and it would have been easier if you didn’t even try. But… you did. That’s what we were thinking, even if we ended up giving Shikamaru-kun the job instead.”

“See, that’s probably a better choice anyway,” you admit. “Seeing how he’d actually be around to help out with Asuma-han still in the hospital.”

“That’s also what we ended up deciding,” Kurenai informs you. “He’s actually been a lot of help… but I can’t help noticing that he’s been down on himself lately. I mean, even more so than before.”

“Yeah no, considering how things went that day I can’t say I’m surprised,” you shake your head. “Can I change the subject? I’d like to know how Asuma-han is doing, since it seems you and Mirai here are doing well enough.”

Kurenai takes a sip of her tea, then sighs. “It’s alright to ask that… Asuma is… alive, of course. You saw to that yourself. The burns, flesh wounds, and broken bones healed well enough… but the scarring around his heart and lungs may be permanent, and his spine was damaged by that scythe Shikamaru-kun mentioned.”

“That… doesn’t sound hopeful,” you frown. “I’m sorry to hear it. Had I anticipated that they were after the bounty...”

“The injury to his spine happened before you arrived,” Kurenai interrupts you. “That would have been sufficient to end his career as an active shinobi. And had you not been there at all he would have been killed.”

“Please stop looking for ways to beat yourself up.”

After a moment, you nod. “Okay.”

“We’ve been discussing it with Tsunade-sama,” Kurenai eventually continues, “and we think that Asuma would make an excellent teacher at the Academy. It won’t be what he’s used to… but teaching is something he loves anyway.”

“And honestly, I think his team is ready to set out on their own… for the most part, at least.”

“Chōji?” you muse.

She nods. “Chōji.”

“Well, it had to come sooner or later,” you sigh.

“One thing though,” Kurenai adds. “About Shikamaru-kun…”

That's fair. For some reason I was remembering things as though they had already hit it off and she was interested in some way. If not as an immediate love interest, then at least as someone she wouldn't be opposed to trying to court her.

That said: she very clearly does have feelings for him, just not romantic ones. For one reason or another, his betrayal really got to her. She couldn't just laugh it off, she cut her palms subconsciously the next time she saw him.
>>
>>4395128
>>4396073

To salvage this a bit and make one thing that is still true clear: drive home the point that his betrayal was especially stinging due to her earlier impressions and respect for him.

He moved from one very short list of people to another: "people younger than herself who she actually respects," to "people who have managed to actually hurt her and are still alive."

“I know what you’re thinking,” you sigh, your quiet tone belying a lingering bitterness, “you’re thinking it was just a mistake, and that I should find it in my heart to forgive him for it. Only I don’t see it that way… the way I see it he made a deliberate choice to betray my trust.”

“So seriously, if he wants to feel better about himself? He’s gonna have to earn it.”

“And how is he meant to do that?” Kurenai asks you with a frown.

“By growing from the experience,” you grumble. “I’m sorry if that seems a bit harsh to you, but we live in a harsh world where children don’t always get to survive when they make a mistake.”

“Just… promise me one thing?” Kurenai sighs. “Just don’t be too hard on him?”

“Yeah no, I wouldn’t do anything to undermine myself,” you agree. “But how he grows has to be up to him or else it’s meaningless. And if he’d rather wallow in self-pity a little while longer that’s his choice to make too.”

“That’s one way of looking at it.”

You nod curtly. “The samurai rubbed off on me a little.”

“How so?” Kurenai asks you curiously.

“Shinobi tend to emphasize loyalty, the importance of the clan and the village, teamwork, and so on,” you explain. “The samurai acknowledge those things, but they’re more individualistic. After all no amount of teamwork can cover a lingering character flaw.”

“So they value individual growth over teamwork?”

You shake your head. “My tutor in the sōkō-ryū would probably insist that it’s before, not over. They know a chain can only be as strong as its weakest link.”

“There can be different kinds of strength,” Kurenai insists.

“And if you lack one of them it becomes a weakness,” you counter. “Shikamaru is clever, and he has decent skills as a shinobi. But when his cleverness failed to provide an easy solution he panicked. The moment exposed his weakness as a person.”

“And what would you say that weakness is?” Kurenai presses.

“He has no resolve,” you quickly declare. “There are some problems that can’t just be out-thought, but that you have to face anyway. Shikamaru met one named Hidan and wasn’t prepared for it.”

There’s a long pause before Kurenai replies, and when she does you’re not sure what to make of it.

“You’re going to make a terrifying teacher one of these days.”

You eventually thank Kurenai for the tea, and say goodbye to little Mirai for the time being, before heading towards the hospital.

When you find Asuma’s room, you find him propped up by an adjustable bed, looking out the window.

“It’s been a while, Asuma-han.”

He glances over at you. “Yeah, it sure has. What brings you here?”

“Short version is I was curious,” you shrug. “I visited Kurenai-sensei and Mirai first, then decided I wanted to see how you were doing.”

“And the long version?” he muses.

“I was in town commissioning Tenten for a set of combat armor,” you explain, “and decided to hang around for a little while. Talked with the Hokage, grabbed a bite to eat. No sense rushing back to my hideout like some kinda recluse.”

“At some point I guess I just realized I hadn’t seen you since that day.”

“Well, here I am,” Asuma muses. “In all my glory.”

“How’s your team handling it?” you ask.

Asuma exhales in the sort of way that habitual smokers often do, as though he were blowing cigarette smoke… you realize that given the extent and locations of his injuries that’s one habit he’s going to have to kick once he’s out of the hospital.

“It could be going better,” he admits. “Chōji took it harder than the others, but Ino is handling it with surprising grace… which is good, because Shikamaru isn’t.”

“I’ve heard as much already today,” you admit. “But I think you can understand that I haven’t been seeing much of him lately.”

“He comes over to play shogi a few times a week and talk,” Asuma-han explains. “He’d never admit it, but the way he’s been playing makes it pretty obvious that he’s lost his confidence.”

“I’m not surprised,” you admit. “He nearly lost his sensei.”

“It’s good that you understand,” Asuma-han muses. “Because I have a favor to ask...”

“Fine,” you sigh. “I’ll talk to him, and I’ll try to be civil about it. But it’s not going to be pleasant… it’s going to be ripping the bandaid off in conversation form.”

“Are you okay with that?”

Asuma lets out another one of those sighs that looks like it should come with cigarette smoke, then nods. “That may be what needs to happen. I’ve tried doing it gently.”

Asuma gives you directions to find the Nara residence, an old-fashioned residence to suit a well-established clan. The grounds are walled off from the rest of the village, with three individual homes forming a ‘district’ centered on a shared garden. It’s the largest of these that you’ve been sent to, finding a familiar design… the ‘core’ of several tatami rooms is surrounded by hardwood-floored hallways, each room seemingly meant to serve a different function. It’s into one of these hallways that a middle-aged man who looks a fair bit like Shikamaru leads you to wait.

There’s a small alcove in the white-plastered walls with a raised floor where a scroll and a flower arrangement sit, and next to it is a second small alcove with a long writing desk, and a window that faces out onto the garden.

You wait patiently on a floor cushion, as tea is brought out to you to help pass the time.

Shikamaru eventually finds you sitting outside the shoin room where you were left, having finished your second serving of tea and snacks and elected to enjoy the garden instead from the edge of the covered walkway. You hear him take a deep breath behind you before he opens his mouth.

“I didn’t mean to keep you waiting,” he insists. “I was out.”

“It’s not a problem,” you insist. “The hospitality was fine while I waited.”

“If you don’t mind me asking...”

“… why am I here?” you complete the thought.

“Yeah,” Shikamaru confirms. “That.”

“Sit down for a moment,” you suggest, waiting for Shikamaru to do so at a healthy distance from you. “Tell me something, how many times have you lost a teammate on a mission?”

After a pause, Shikamaru replies truthfully. “Never… though it’s been close.”

“And how many times have you killed during a mission?” you press. “And seriously, I don’t mean chucking a kunai at someone and it just happened to kill them. What I want to know is have you ever directly, intentionally, with full awareness of the repercussions of your actions ended the life of another human being?”

“… no.”
>1/2
>>
>>4397789
“Then you should be grateful,” you muse, “for the fact that you’ve been [i[very[/i] lucky. But you also need to realize something about the path you’ve chosen in your life: that you won’t always be so lucky.”

“When the Land of Sky attacked your village, I killed dozens of their shinobi,” you tell him sternly, looking out at the garden as you speak. “I did it because I knew if I didn’t they wouldn’t just kill other shinobi… they’d kill bystanders too. Women, children, potentially people I knew. So I made a choice.”

“Where are you going with this?” Shikamaru demands, sounding more exhausted than angry.

“Do you remember the last question in your stage of the joint chūnin exams?” you ask him.

“It was a trick question,” Shikamaru recounts. “The answer was not to sacrifice anyone.”

“And do you remember the tenth question?” you press.

“The answer was to stay in the room.”

“Not quite,” you insist. “The answer was to demonstrate your resolve by staying in the room. But tell me, do you see the contradiction there?”

“Contradiction?”

You nod. “You’re a chūnin. You should already get that sometimes shinobi die on missions. So should you prepare for that? Or should you reject the possibility?”

“I never said that I rejected it,” Shikamaru insists. “But there’s always another answer!”

“Say that to my battle-scarred face,” you counter. “Say that to my dead friends and teammates. Say that to literally every Hokage so far. You’re clever, Shikamaru, way smarter than I am. But the inescapable fact is that nothing you did was going to save your sensei’s life.”

His eyes widen.

“You need to accept that and find a way to move on,” you insist. “And no one can do it for you.”

“The only way for you to move forward is to grow up and accept reality,” you insist sternly.

“So you’re telling me to...” Shikamaru begins, only for you to interrupt.

“I didn’t say you have to like it,” you continue. “But before you start changing the world, don’t you think you should come to an understanding of how the world actually is first? If nobody can agree on that much then how will they agree on a solution?”

Shikamaru frowns, staring at the dirt at the edge of the garden in front of you. “You know… we never really talked about what happened to us in the Forest of Death, did we?”

“I had a great time,” you muse. “Traumatized some punk genin for life for abusing my distant cousin Karin, beat up some losers from Takigakure, and read a lot. I think I managed to scare Kurenai-han’s team though… still don’t really know what I did to deserve that but it’s all in the past now.”

“Yeah, while you finished on the first day, my team was just desperately trying to avoid getting crushed by freaks of nature like you or Gaara,” Shikamaru sighs wistfully.

“Thanks,” you grumble. “I’ll try to take that as a compliment.”

“Anyway, it was the third day I think when we got into a scrap with the team from Otogakure,” Shikamaru continues. “You know. You beat their leader by blowing up his arm?”

“That’s not quite how I remember it happening,” you grumble again. “But yeah, I remember him.”

“When we ran into them they were beating the crap out of Sakura-kun,” Shikamaru recounts. You refrain from asking why they felt the need to intervene. “Ino used her mind-transfer technique to take that Kin girl who was with them hostage.”

The one who had to cut her own arm off so that Gaara wouldn’t murder her. Yeah, you remember that too.

“That one with the punk haircut and the blow holes in his hands was gonna just kill her instead,” Shikamaru admits with a shrug. “At the time I had no idea how our plan could’ve backfired that badly, but now? I feel like I’ve just been avoiding the issue for too long, you know?”

“And what’s the issue?” you press.

“They didn’t hesitate,” Shikamaru sighs, “when it came down to sacrificing a teammate for the mission. I thought it was just plain ruthlessness at the time, but when it came down to risking Asuma-sensei’s life to beat Akatsuki I… couldn’t do it.”

“Admittedly it’s not the same… getting through a glorified test and stopping a terrorist organization full of S-ranked criminals are pretty different as far as goals go. But shouldn’t that just mean the right choice between turning on someone who was trying to help and siding with the guy holding Asuma-sensei hostage should’ve been obvious?”

“Yeah, you’d think,” you insist sternly. “You put Asuma-han’s immediate safety over everything else, and almost got him, yourself, your teammates, and me killed as a result.”

“… you’re right.”

“You lost your sense of perspective,” you continue.

“Also right,” he admits. “Though… can I ask you something?”

“You may.”

“Asuma-sensei tried to teach me something before that mission,” Shikamaru admits. “Over a game of shogi. He asked me what I thought ‘the king’ was, in terms of our village.”

“And what did you say?”

“I guessed the Hokage, but you can probably already tell that was the wrong answer,” he admits. “The most important piece… what would you have said?”

“Yeah no, you’re getting hung up on the window-dressing, numbskull,” you grumble. “Remember that shogi is a game made up by feudalists for feudalists, and then consider the role the king plays in that game.”

“So… it’d be the daimy-”

Wrong!” you interrupt. “The only people who really care about the daimyō are the daimyō, and that’s all most of them care about. So instead fit it into how Konoha does things.”

“Come on, dummy. Even I can see it.”

There’s a look of dawning comprehension.

“…oh.”

“Yeah?” you press.

“So the reason he wanted to take the lead against Hidan was...” Shikamaru continues.

“Well?” you press again. “Are you going to say it out loud, or are you just going to dance around it a little while longer? Cause I didn’t come here to dance.”

After a moment, Shikamaru’s brain finally re-engages with the present. “The fire’s shadow will illuminate the village, and once again, tree leaves shall bud anew.”

“Where did that come from?”

“It was a poem that Lord Third wrote once,” Shikamaru explains quietly. “I forgot the first half, but the important part means...”

“That you finally understand it,” you interrupt. “What the ‘new buds’ are that the Hokage should cherish.”

“Yeah,” Shikamaru confirms.

“Then what’re you still talking to me for?” you demand. “Isn’t there someone else who needs to hear this more?”

“You’re right,” Shikamaru agrees, hopping down from the porch and quickly stretching before he runs off.

“By the way,” you interrupt him just before he can take off. “This doesn’t mean we’re good yet… but don’t let that bother you too much.”

After a moment, Shikamaru nods in understanding.

On the sixth day of January, you find yourself on the back of a horse in the hilly deserts north of Sunagakure, wrapped in a lightly-colored cloak to keep the sun off you.

“So… I do like horses,” you admit to Temari, who’s riding just a little more than arm’s distance ahead of you and to your right. “And it’s not every day I get to ride… but remind me, why are we out here again?”

“We’re here checking on something,” she insists vaguely. “I suspect something’s happening out here right now… it’s not much further.”

“Okay,” you reply, not really sure that constitutes an answer. “Keep your secrets then.”

She’s been leading you on a rising path through sparse scrub brush, a slow rise over the last hour or so of a ride that started before dawn, and that path leads up to a line of rocky outcroppings. Eventually you ride over a low saddle between two sheer faces of stone, and what you start to see comes as a surprise.

“… wow,” you muse from the saddle.

“I thought so,” Temari grins to herself. “These rocky hills tend to trap water during our rainy season. I figured after a month or two it would’ve started, we had enough storms out here for this to happen this year.”

“What do you mean, this year?” you ask, riding into the maze of low hills and rocky pillars, strewn with fields of wildflowers of every conceivable color.

“It only happens every several years,” Temari explains, “but sometimes, when the monsoon is just right and the month of December is just warm enough and cloudy enough… parts of the desert explode like this.”

“Welcome to the ‘paintbrush hills’. If you’re curious the yellows are mostly brittlebrush and sand verbena, the whites are evening primrose and desert lily, the purples are bluebell and lupine, and the orange is poppy.”

“I had no idea,” you muse. “It’s gorgeous.”

“I think I remember there’s a little spring over this way,” Temari insists.

“You’ve been here before?”

Temari, who has been watching your horses drink from the spring water, nods. It took a little searching, but eventually her memories proved to be more or less correct.

“I was a little girl at the time. Our father brought me and Kankuro out here… I was four and Kankuro was three, I think.”

… so that would be shortly after Gaara was born, and their mother died.

“And the saddlebags?” you ask, gesturing towards the bags and saddles, which Temari had you take off the horses’ backs to give them a break.

“Well,” Temari muses, and for a moment you sense her hesitate. “I figured whether I was right or not we’d need something to eat out here...”

“You… packed a picnic?”

She nods. “Yeah, kinda? Is that okay?”

“… is there a reason it wouldn’t be?”

There’s a short pause where neither of you speaks.

“Well, no… I guess...” Temari replies with a frown… and just a bit of a blush. “I was just thinking… you know what, nevermind. It’s not important.”

Temari quickly unpacks the meal from the bags, where the food has been kept chilled along the way by ice or in double-walled metal containers: chilled barley tea, couscous with mint and vegetables, some fresh fruits, creamy goat’s cheese with herbs, all to be eaten with soft flatbread. You each sit on your own blanket on the sandy soil, under a blue sky streaked with wispy clouds.

“Y’know, simple pleasures really are the best,” you muse contentedly. “Seriously, I can’t get why people keep forgetting that.”

“Most of the time people want what they’re taught to want,” Temari muses quietly. “At least I guess that’s how it works.”

“Probably a good point.”

After you’ve eaten your fill you spend a little time resting by the spring, looking at the water.

“Think it’s deep enough to swim?” you muse.

Temari shakes her head. “This one isn’t. But there’s an old stone-cut stepwell near here that should be. But how would you...”

Then she sees you twirling one of your marked kunai by its ring pommel.

“… ah.”

“This is better,” you sigh, floating in the cool, clear water. Here, someone cut probably about ten feet into the earth to hit the hard rock layer where another small spring once was, and as a result the plastered-over hole is full of water up to the fifth stair down or so, with a shallower shelf to one side where the water is just deep enough to sit.

A stomach full of good, simple food, a pool of cool, sparkling water under the blue skies, the sound of birds flittering around and chirping, all surrounded by a riot of colorful flowers… if there’s such a thing as an earthly paradise it must look something like this. No horses though… riding them back for several hours in the desert while wet seemed like a recipe for misery, so you teleported them while fetching your swimsuits.

“Someone looks happy,” Temari muses from the bench against the wall of the stepwell.

“How could you tell?” you reply with a smirk, sinking a little into the water to actually look at her while you’re talking. “My hair’s gonna be a mess though… but that’s an issue for future-Naori. Speaking of, I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen you with your hair down.”

“… and?”

You pause. “And what?”

“What do you think?” she wonders.

You shake your head. “I dunno that my opinion counts, but it just doesn’t seem very… you. Could just be I’m not used to seeing it.”

“Just go with your heart, you know?”

After diving down to the bottom of the well for a little while, you resurface and slide back onto the bench next to Temari before pulling your wet mess of red hair out of your face.

“This place is amazing,” you muse, leaning against the wall. “Thanks… for sharing it with me, I mean.”

“Yeah,” she replies, her face slightly red again. “Of course...”

She fidgets, looking like she wants to say something else.

“You know I’m a little weird,” you sigh, suddenly breaking the tension.

“How so?” Temari asks, as if having realized you threw her a lifeline just then.

“Being raised in a brothel, admittedly a classy one, means my ideas about love are kinda different from most people’s our age,” you muse. “For one thing it’s not the same as sex to me… which I’m also a bit weird about.”

There’s a longer pause.

“… how so?”

“No, not weird like that,” you insist. “Gods no. What I mean is that I’ve found both sides can have their own charm, if you catch my meaning.”

“You mean you wouldn’t find it weird… if I… you know...”

You shake your head. “Nah, I’m fine with that. At a certain point sex is sex, no sense shaming people for who they do it with. But at the same time, sex and love are two totally different things, you know?”

“So… you can be attracted to someone, but not want to be with them,” Temari reasons through the implications, “and that’s just fine to you?”

You nod. “Sure. I was kinda into Sasuke’s older brother for a while, I think, but that never happened… he wouldn’t let it happen, and so I respected his wishes. I can also admit that Shikamaru and Naruto-kun are both good-looking, but romantically they’re both a hard nope from me.”

There’s another pause. “And so what about me?”

“Listen,” you insist, holding her by the shoulders and forcing her to turn to face you directly. “I haven’t given this sort of question nearly as much thought as I might’ve made it seem... like, ever. All I know is the last thing I want is for either of us to become a regret for the other.”

“Cause even if we don’t end up together you’re important to me. When this thing with Akatsuki is over and dealt with we can take our time to sort out the rest. Kay?”

After a few moments, Temari responds with a quiet smile. “Thanks… for neither turning me down nor rushing in. You’re right… but you have to admit.”

“What?” you muse.

She smirks. “It was a pretty nice day.”

“… no arguments here.”

Great work. That was exactly my line of thought. Naori hasn't thought much about romance at all, she's been too busy for that
>>
Hmm. What would being raised in a brothel do to someone's views on affection?

I guess they'd be a lot less resistant to seeing the cold, transactional side of relationships. They might have a harder time with the more sentimental side of things; with putting love on a special pedestal and believing in "you give me that funny feeling in my tummy".
>>
There only one husbando/waifu I well bow to and it ours plain noodle girl.
>>
>>4402302
Being raised in a brothel has everything to do with it, really. To Naori, "erotic love" wouldn't even be "love" at all, because if it can literally be bought from a stranger how much can it be worth? She can still appreciate the beauty of and (most importantly) within another person, and there's nothing intrinsically wrong with sex to her. It's just very different from "love".

Because of her upbringing I've let two things define Naori's ideas about "love". First is that a courtesan house has an extra level of social rules beyond even most aristocratic gatherings, so her sense of "xenia" or hospitality-relationships is overdeveloped. That's part of why she's so mad at Shikamaru: it was both a violation of "common decency" as well as a deep personal insult.

Naori also surrounds herself with and cherishes people she feels "philia" towards because that's "real love" to her, going beyond the transactional. She adores Fū and Karin for example, both caring for them deeply and enjoying their presence in her life. Losing that sort of relationship with Ajisai is what awakened her Mangekyo.

In the "philic" or platonic sense Naori loves more openly and naturally than most for having clearly split "love" away from "sex". But the thorny consequence for any romantic relationship is that if sexual attraction isn't love, how can she tell that an affection is deep enough and intimate enough that sex becomes an exploration and an expression of "real love" rather than a goal in and of itself? The sort of emotional intimacy she's really after in a sexual relationship is a lofty standard but, given how and where she grew up, an important one to her.

At least that's the perspective I've tended to take.

“Like I said when you asked,” you find yourself repeating a few days later, “don’t worry about it! So far as I’m concerned you’ve more than earned a round-trip ticket.”

“Still, thank you,” Ryūzetsu bows. “Without your help it’d be hard to even get out of the castle.”

“And how are you feeling?” you ask Tayuya, whose frazzled expression already gives you an idea of the answer. “The first time can be a bit disorienting.”

“A bit,” Tayuya repeats sarcastically, rolling her eyes. “For a moment there I almost forgot which way was up, Naori. How the hell d’ya get used to that… and while we’re at it what the hell’s with that armor!?”

“Time and perspective,” you shrug. “The armor, I’m still getting used to… better now than in battle, that’s all.”

You’ve arrived at Takumi village, famed for its production of weapons for the larger hidden villages right across the world… because of that trade in weapons the artisans here were both enriched by the various wars over the last century and imperilled, depending on the shifting tides.

The shops here mostly stock those weapons, though a few have obviously given over to the production of fine cutlery and other metal tools like hammers, chisels, and so forth.

“So where to first?” you muse.

“I need to find someplace willing to do a bulk order,” Tayuya explains her reason for wanting to tag along. “Buncha ‘nothing-fancy’ tantōs, ‘cept Natsuhi-san wanted to take a step up in quality.”

“Then this is probably the right place,” Ryūzetsu-han muses. “Kusa has so few ANBU it could afford to spend a bit more on us… my sword came from here.”

“And why were you so keen to come here?” Tayuya asks her.

“A rumor that I’ve been authorized to purchase,” she muses thoughtfully. “Apparently there’s a meitō-quality spear here. As a warden, a spear with a short haft would be a pretty useful weapon to carry… and as the warden of a shinobi prison it’d have to be of good quality.”

“Fancy spear, huh?” Tayuya muses. “Alright, let’s do that first.”

It really does strike you as a meitō-level work of art, when Ryūzetsu leads you and Tayuya into a plain-looking shop to see it. A long, straight blade set onto an even longer tang, designed for powerful chopping blows as well as deep thrusts. And the workmanship… flawless in form, with a powerful, distinctive temper line that looks to be the signature of…

“Muramasa, huh?” you muse quietly to Ryūzetsu when the shopowner isn’t hovering too close. “You didn’t mention that.”

“Is it worth what he’s asking for it?” Ryūzetsu asks just as quietly after carefully testing its length and weight a few times. “You’re the one who knows about meitō.”

“Buy it,” you simply insist quietly, keeping your estimate of its true value to yourself for now. "If you don't I might."

“It’s pretty,” Tayuya shakes her head after you’ve paid for the spear. “But was it really worth that much?”

When you tell Tayuya that the only reason you didn’t have to pay ten times as much is because so few people are interested in buying old spears, her jaw drops in disbelief. Tantōs and swords forged by the first and second generation Muramasa command prices nearly on par with the Kotetsu name or one of the notable Ichimonjis.

After Tayuya gives the list of requirements that Natsuhi-tono gave her over to a smith (standardized length, a maximum sori or curvature of a quarter centimeter, plain matching fittings), you find yourself browsing idly when your eyes fall on a short sword, more like a long tantō than a short wakizashi. It’s obviously well-made but from one of the later, less famous smiths of the otherwise celebrated Rai school, with fittings, form, and temper line all much less grand than Umekiri-maru. In a sense, it's quaintly 'humble' as far as fine swords go. But it does have a certain flair to it that catches your eye.

Naori, that's a lot of responsibility having two swords to look after. And think of how Umekiri will feel! "What, I'm not good enough for you anymore?"

But seriously, this isn't committing to learning Niten Ichi style, is it? Just nice to have a back-up or alternative weapon.

And on the topic of weapons: does Naori have an armory at any or all of her hideouts? Maybe with some of the equipment she'd need to do maintenance and simple repairs?

. . . could she hypothetically seal a weaponsmith and his entire shop into a scroll?

P.S. does Naori still have any shinobi umbrellas? Those seemed useful and very on brand for a kunoichi raised by courtesans from the hidden rain.

P.P.S. be on the lookout for a war fan. Not for us. For, uhh, Temari. Yea, that's it. Guys, I think I may have a problem.

>>
>>4403057
It's not committing so much as allowing the possibility. There are a lot of different styles Naori can pull off right now that rely on her doing something with her off hand (sealing chains, shuriken, etc).
>>4403067
The hideouts in the Land of Hot Water and the Land of Grass have basic tools for removing/replacing fittings, oil and cloths for cleaning, etc, as well as small crates full of marked kunai. She also has some crates of regular hira shuriken, regular kunai, senbon, and wire for the sake of others, but all that comes fairly cheap. Also, gas masks/respirators, that sort of thing.

Her parasols were mostly totalled years ago and just don't fit her current style even as well as they did when she was a genin (when she rarely used them).

Fans are only really useful for wind release, which Naori is essentially incapable of using.

It’s borderline instinctive, actually. Not nearly at the same level of unaccountable familiarity as when you first held Umekiri-maru in your hands, but it’s a rare case when a physical object just seems right.

And so, quite unexpectedly, you end up purchasing yourself a new tantō, a Rai Tenryushi that looks like it could be a lesser sibling to your own Umekiri Ichimonji Norimune. Not a meitō, but in your eyes a worthy companion to one.

“Nice,” Ryūzetsu nods appreciatively. “What is it?”

“A late product of the Rai school,” you muse. “Good quality, but not what people consider characteristic of the school, and not especially valuable. A good choice for a companion sword.”

“It looks a little odd,” Tayuya frowns. “Right in the middle there, pattern kinda loses its damn mind a bit.”

“It may be a deliberate imitation of the Ichimonji style,” you muse. “Either way it compliments Umekiri nicely. I like it.”

“Is that handle original?” Ryūzetsu asks you curiously.

“No, actually,” you admit, “I had to quickly request one to match Umekiri. The tsuba is original though.”

You pause for a moment, sensing something amiss.

“What’s up?” Tayuya asks you.

It’s two paper tags: first the one you left with Konan-sensei, then a few minutes later the one you left with Tsunade-han that confirms your worst fears about what Konan-sensei had wanted to tell you. Ryūzetsu and Tayuya both watch, first with confusion, then with concern.

“It’s Konohagakure,” you frown, fitting the Tenryushi at your hip along with Umekiri-maru. “It’s time.”

“I’m taking you both home,” you insist, grabbing both Ryūzetsu and Tayuya by their respective shoulders and teleporting them first to Hoshigakure before letting go of Tayuya.

“If it’s a fight we can help!” Tayuya tells you quickly.

“I know,” you reply calmly, before teleporting to Hozuki Castle and releasing Ryūzetsu. “But I don’t want you to. I won’t let anyone else risk their lives on this on this if I can help it, cause I know what’s coming.”

“… then be careful,” Ryūzetsu frowns. “And if I can help don’t hesitate. I’ll be waiting.”

“Thank you,” you tell her, before teleporting to your hideout and calling everyone out to the courtyard at the same time.

“Konohagakure is under attack by Akatsuki,” you declare. “Karin, Yugito, Fū, you’ll remain here and I’ll take shadow clones to help out. Sasuke, if you want to come with me… it’s your home. I have no right to tell you how to defend it.”

“But decide quickly.”

After a moment, where the others create shadow clones that all put their hands on your shoulders, Sasuke joins them personally.

“I’m going.”

“Then let’s go,” you reply, teleporting to Tsunade-han.

She’s watching from the top of the Hokage Residence, and there’s a substantial amount of smoke coming from Konohagakure as regular people are evacuated towards the shelters around the hokage monument.

“You’re here,” Tsunade-han frowns. “Good. The situation...”

“I can feel it, Tsunade-han,” you shut your eyes, already underlined by the red markings of your sage mode. “So much death...”

“Pain has been engaged in multiple sectors,” Tsunade informs you. “He tricked our sensors by coming in with only one body, but there are clearly multiple attackers.”

“The Animal Path summoned them,” you realize. “I can see some of its summons are at work… three of the bodies aren’t primarily combat-oriented though. So the ones that are are probably serving as distractions… likely searching for Naruto-kun.”

“That isn’t a problem,” Tsunade insists cryptically. “What we need to do is contain the damage and evacuate all the civilians we can to safety.”

“We’ll help,” Karin insists. “I’m a medical ninja and a sensor, and Fū here’s pretty good in a fight. We can help evacuate and treat civilians.”
>1/2

>>4404401
“If there are three ‘Paths’ skulking about,” Yugitō offers, “I can try to draw them out. I’m already a target, so I’d be willing to bet they’d leap at the opportunity if they thought I was really here.”

“I will go with you,” Sasuke-kun declares. “Someone has to help spring the trap, assuming Pain falls for it. I at least want to see his face.”

“Be wary of your emotions,” you warn him. “Akatsuki were your brother’s enemies. Don’t let that turn into something personal.”

“I won’t,” he nods curtly.

“And what about you?” Tsunade-han asks.

>I’ll find the Animal Path. Getting rid of those summons will help tremendously.

By finding Animal Path and beating it, we will gain the definite attention of Pain. Sure we could find Konan to gain some insight, or by calling out Pain we could stall for some time, but we have to take this fight smartly. Make the opponent weaker for when the big fight starts, we have a small advantage.

“I’ll do what I can to buy time for the evacuation,” you decide. “Ideally that means dealing with the Animal Path first, but really contacting any of the Paths will do… I think he understands it will take more than one Path to deal with me.”

“Then good luck,” Tsunade nods curtly, before handing you a slug the size of a large hamster. “Take Katsuyu with you.”

You hesitate for a moment, almost ready to ask why, but decide that in such circumstances it’s best not to question her right now. She must have her reasons, so you put the slug into a pouch at your right hip normally intended for large scrolls about that size.

“Thanks,” you reply, before turning to your friends. “And good luck to all of you too.”

Large sections of the village have been damaged or destroyed, probably due mostly to the Asura path’s weapons, and dust and smoke hang thick in the air. There was also one particularly large explosion that created a mushroom-like cloud that towers over the surrounding buildings… you can sense that two Paths are fighting there.

But that’s not where the Animal Path is going to be… Pain wouldn’t risk all the devastation his summons are doing by using their summoner as a frontline fighter. So the third one you can sense…

“Found you,” you declare confidently, having crossed half of Konohagakure to find your target. “We meet again, Pa-”

You stop short as you recognize what it is you’re looking at. Your heart pounds in your ears, and your mouth turns dry as parchment.

“You...”

“It’s been a while, Raishō Naori,” she greets you coldly, in a familiar voice. “I’ve been expecting you. Well done in locating the Animal Path in all this destruction… truly, the powers of a Sage are not to be underestimated.”

You can feel your hands clenching and unclenching as you grapple with what you’re feeling. Her face has changed… it’s not just the eyes, or the pins sticking out of her, or the hair color. It’s the expression that utterly lacks humanity, or identifiable emotions: the face of a dead woman, and a monster speaking in her voice.

“Why?” you demand curtly.

“Jiraiya-sensei destroyed the previous Animal Path,” Pain explains in Ajisai’s voice. “So I treated it as an opportunity.”

“What the hell do you mean!?” you raise your voice.

“I did this for your benefit,” Pain insists. “I thought that you and I shared an understanding… but your betrayal...”
>1/2
>>
>>4404832
Your fist connects with her cheek, sending her body crashing through an abandoned storefront like a ragdoll.

How DARE you talk about betrayals in AJISAI’S voice!?” you scream in rage, the pressure exerted by your chakra cracking the pavement at your feet. “You sent her to her DEATH! And now you’ve defiled her corpse to use her for MASS MURDER!

There’s a large burst of smoke from inside the remnants of the building.

“I’m not sure why I expected you to understand,” Pain drones listlessly, using Ajisai’s body to climb out of the rubble, having taken remarkably little damage from the experience. Of course… she’s already dead. There’s only so much you can do to her short of catastrophic destruction.

Then two more Paths step out from behind her… the Asura path, and a Path that you recognize, but the capabilities of which you can’t be sure of. This third path stays back at a distance, while the Asura Path steps forward.

“This body understood our goals,” Pain continues. “She was willing to sacrifice herself in their pursuits, to bring justice to the hellscape we call a world. She should feel honored.”

Ajisai was no murderer,” you insist angrily. “She had friends in this village! Because unlike you Ajisai was a good person who could differentiate people from their nationalities!”

“And now you have the utter gall to use her corpse for something like this? To specifically hurt her closest friend in battle?”

If our qm wasn't king, I'd say y'all done fucked up.

A lot of qms would use this moment as a turning point to do something like turn Konan or Tsunade against us forever.

King tends to be a bit more circumspect about taking easy opportunities to write dramatic, spectacularly-disastrous outcomes.

tl;dr: there will almost certainly be consequences, but 's probably fine.

“… I’m glad that Konan-sensei’s not here,” you eventually admit.

“Is that so?” Pain muses, almost as though he’s amused by that.

“Yeah,” you reply, “because even if we disagree about you, I still respect her feelings and understand her position. So I’ve been holding back. I didn’t want to resort to what I’m about to do if I could help it.”

“But now you intend to fight me with everything you have,” Pain sneers through the Path in back.

“Such a quaint notion,” Ajisai’s voice taunts you. “I had no idea you were so...”

“Stop that,” you interrupt. “See, the trick when you’ve dug yourself a hole is to stop digging, dumbass.”

You quickly bite your thumb and slam your palm to the ground, even as the Animal Path does the same, making contact at the same time since she… no, since it can skip a step.

“Kuchiyose!”
“Kuchiyose: Ajisai!”

The Animal Path summoned… nothing, at first glance, though you know it must be the chameleon. But even Pain pauses when he realizes what you’ve done.

“You’re not the only one who can summon the dead,” you declare. “But unlike you I’m not a two-bit hack about it… what matters to me is the soul.”

“Hey… wait a minute,” Ajisai frowns at your side, before leaning in front of you to interrogate you. For being dead, she’s unusually animated compared to how you knew her in life. “What the hell is this!?”

“That’s your corpse,” you explain curtly. “Pain’s using it to destroy Konohagakure and murder thousands of innocent people… while conveniently playing on my emotions in the process. He seems to think you’d be okay with that.”

“Oh hell no!” Ajisai declares, visibly recoiling.

“I’m not impressed,” the Animal Path admits flatly, before the giant chameleon’s tongue grabs her and pulls her into the safe refuge of its invisible mouth. You try to move to intercept it, but the Asura Path moves to block your way… so for now, you let this pass. It’s not hard to use your senjutsu-enhanced senses to track the chameleon anyway, and you figure you can deal with the individual summons much more easily than any normal shinobi could.

Pain continues his villainous monologue through the supporting Path. “Is this the technique you didn’t want to show Konan? She can follow my lead, even when she disagrees with me, because she understands the importance of what I’m doing. You could learn a lot from her.”

“Ajisai,” you muse. “We can use Gojō Kibaku Fūda now.”

“I… sure...” Ajisai replies, still reeling from what she’s just witnessed.

You weave three hand seals, and unroll a scroll onto the ground. “Tensa Jōdo Tensei.”

>>4405883
The man you’ve summoned, already facing you, from the Pure Land looks exactly like the “main” Path of Pain… the same messy hair, same face, the same body shape and size in every way. But what’s different is equally important: his face is unmarred by the pins and rods Pain uses to control his corpse, and his expression is more human despite the visible faults that come with a resurrected body. There’s a certain confidence there, and a capacity for kindness you can see in his resting smile. His uniform is also plain black, with a wide band keeping his overcoat closed… the uniform of the original Akatsuki.

Then he clutches frantically at his chest.

Gah!” he shouts, “lady, I’ve been stabbed, get a medi...”

He pauses to look down at his chest.

“… huh. I distinctly recall having a new hole there.”

Then he looks back at you. “Hey, lady… you’re a Sage? Who are you? Where are we? Am I dead?”

“Yes, I’m Naori, we’re in Konoha, and also yes. Sorry.”

You interrupt him before he can ask anything further. “And the guy behind you is in the process of slaughtering the villagers here.”

The man rounds on Pain. “Then I can already tell why I’m here, Naori-san! I may not be a fan of Konoha, but people can’t learn if they’re dead!”

“… Yahiko?

Yahiko freezes up as he realizes who he’s facing. “The Rinnegan...”

“That’s… Pain?” Ajisai whispers across to you. “I don’t get it.”

“You don’t have to,” you whisper back. “Just be ready… I’ll walk you through the Gojō Kibaku Fūda the first time, so pay attention and take over after that. And seriously, be careful with it.”

“Hey lady,” Yahiko asks, back still turned to you. “The hell is going on here? How can these two have the Rinnegan?”

“Pain, the man controlling those corpse-puppets, is the third.”

Yahiko still doesn’t look at you. “Is that really you… Nagato?”

“I no longer go by that name, Yahiko,” the Path furthest in back insists.

“Why are you attacking Konoha like this!?” Yahiko demands angrily. “Where is Jiraiya-sensei?”

“Jiraiya-sensei is no longer in this world,” the Path explains. “He turned his back on us.”

“Wait, you killed him!?” Yahiko demands. “What happened to you, Nagato?”

“The world turned its back on us,” Pain spits in an unusually bitter tone. “Our dream has changed somewhat as I grew out of childhood fantasies, starting with the day you died.”

Then Pain turns his attention to you. “I know why you did this. Yahiko died a long time ago, showing me his face again to hurt me the same way I hurt you will not work.”

“If you think that’s why I did this, then you’re right about one thing,” you growl. “It was a waste of my time. It seems the man my sensei used to respect died the same day Yahiko did… I just hate that I have to be the one to tell her.”

You aren’t overconfident enough to believe for one minute that this will be a fight that you can end quickly, so you prefer to think of what happens next as just the first of what may be the full twelve rounds.

The Asura Path is the first to act, firing his fist at you trailing a long chain of explosives in an attack you’ve seen before. The trick is to be aggressive, and so you split his chain fist lengthwise to give you safe space to rush forward and vault into the air, small explosions going off everywhere else you could have gone. You’re in perfect position to attack when the Asura Path creates a new problem for your to solve: like a certain combat puppet, it also has a razor-sharp blade like a flexible saw for a tail, which it uses to parry Umekiri’s edge. Impressive.

That forces you back as it lashes out after you, and you use Kongō Fūsa with your left hand to wrap around the offending blade and bind it in an awkward extended position… only for the Asura Path to grow a massive missile out of his shoulder and fire it at you, trailing fire and smoke.

You’re forced to step atop the flat side of his saw-tail, releasing the Kongō Fūsa as you go, allowing you to meet the missile and slice it in half midair. The two halves still manage to destroy a pair of buildings on either side of the street you’re fighting in, buildings which if all has gone well are uninhabited.

Frustratingly, the other Path chooses this precise moment to intercede, hurling a black rod at you from a distance. This time you draw the Rai Tenryushi and throw it to meet the rod, its turning movement deflecting the attack and sending your own blade tumbling off in a totally different direction where it embeds itself in the street some distance away. Perfect.

Just as you intended, the chakra flow through a properly-made blade such as the Tenryushi ensures that there was no damage to the finely-honed edge, unlike a regular kunai which when faced with one of Pain’s chakra receiver rods may have been unusable afterwards.

“Gotcha!” you shout, unsealing and hurling a handful of exploding paper shuriken and forming a one-handed seal. “Shuriken Kagebunshin!”
>1/2
>>
>>4407235
The exploding shuriken multiply into a few dozen, most of which explode all around the Asura Path but some of which it’s forced to either evade or counter with various other tricks its body can perform: which was, of course, the point. It seems that it can absolutely fire smaller projectiles out of its body, extending both of his arms to fire the miniature explosive as well as releasing senbon from a few locations on his body. Nothing you can’t handle so far.

But with a burst of smoke your attention is called to a new development.

“Kuchiyose!”

From somewhere else on the street you hear the Animal Path summon… and you can sense that the chameleon has moved after that summoning. Frustratingly, the fight with the Asura Path has taken a lot of your concentration, so without the chance to use some wide-area sensory technique you’re just kind of stuck with the Animal Path having free rein.

In the short term, you’ll have to deal with the giant rhinoceros that’s charging down the street at you.

>Have Ajisai use the Gojō Kibaku Fūda, “mutually multiplying explosive tags”. No sense keeping it a secret.

Honestly, summoning giant creatures against someone who basically specializes in fighting tailed beasts was a mistake on Pain’s part, but then again that’s all the Animal Path can really do against you. But in reality this just means that he’s given you a new weapon to beat him with.

“Kongō Fūsa!”

The rhino’s horn gives you a perfect spot to aim for, and you not only sink the spiked end of your chakra chain into its skull you wrap the chain around the horn and use your full strength to swing the giant beast around and smash it into the spot where the Asura Path and the support Path behind it have been hiding.

The result is a titanic crash of flying plaster, splinters, and glass from which the two Paths emerge just in time for you to start peppering them with exploding paper shuriken. To pull this next step off you activate your sharingan so that you can get the timing perfect since this is the first time you’ll be trying it in combat against someone who could conceivably kill you if you make a mistake.

In an instant you teleport to a Hiraishin marking that had passed just over the Asura Path’s shoulder, already turning to land the fatal blow, blurring its true location with a Sandanzuki genjutsu. You already suspect that the fields of vision for all the Paths are linked, but you don’t expect to see two extra faces on the Asura Path.

You also don’t expect him to grow two extra arms out of the backs of his elbows.

One catches you by your wrist, and the other starts to fire like some kind of rocket-powered punch that you have to smack aside with your foot, before planting your other foot against the Asura Path’s ribs. You kick off, wrenching your wrist free and using Umekiri to slice off the extra arm that had grappled you, the force of the blow to his ribs bouncing him off the street and into a building on the opposite side of the road.

Your feet hit and destroy the metal patio roof of a shop on the corner, the aluminum sheets simply crumpling under the force like paper. You reorient yourself with your senjutsu-enhanced senses and your sharingan, teleporting yourself to the Tenryushi to avoid another attack by a summoned creature. This time it’s a pressure jet of water unleashed by a giant crab, which slices not only the building you were braced against but several buildings around it. It also rips a deep line into the street as well, rupturing a water main that gushes up from below.

After pulling the Rai Tenryushi from the ground you hurl it at the Asura Path, who dodges it only to sacrifice its other extra arm as you use hiraishin-giri a second time and leap away, landing lightly on your toes.

“That body is one tough bastard,” you muse, adopting a guarded stance.

“Kuchiyose!”

You ear the Animal Path perform a summoning again, a giant bird emerging seemingly from a wall and grabbing you in its beak before flying into the air.

>Get free and summon Nyoka, get started on changing the weather as you deal with this bird.

First thing, you’ve gotta get out of this bird’s beak before it swallows you… you’re not sure of course, but you’d assume that something bad happens otherwise.

Using the raikō kenka technique on your left wrist you fling several exploding tag shuriken down the bird monster’s gullet, forcing it to open its beak just wide enough for you to leap from its mouth. Then you bite the tip of your thumb and hold your left palm out below you as you fall.

“Kuchiyose: Nyoka!”

In a burst of smoke Nyoka appears, easing you out of your fall and taking to the skies in a wide loop to survey the damage all around her.

“What is it we are fighting?” she wonders aloud.

“Pain,” you explain. “We need to start with that bird monster.”

“This one would be all too happy,” Nyoka muses. “The Shrike clan will suffer no competitors for mastery of the skies!”

She swoops low as the drill-beaked bird monster gives chase, ripping a telephone pole out of the streets with her talons. Then, with a powerful beat of her wings she reverses over, momentum crushing you forward and into her back, before slamming the phone pole through the monster chasing you. You’re treated to the momentary sight of the drill-beak pinned to an apartment complex by a phone pole, before the monster dissipates into a puff of smoke around the makeshift weapon.

“Nicely done!” you cheer Nyoka on, guiding her with pressure from your left hand. “Now take me this way and drop me off… then brew up a storm. I’m re-engaging with Pain.”

“This one will bend the skies to your allegiance!” Nyoka insists, rolling midflight to drop you back to the street level before hurtling skywards.

You roll once over your shoulder and slide on your feet, before kicking off and clashing with the Asura Path’s panoply of blades.

“Seriously, you’ll have to do better than that bird-brain!” you taunt him.

“I see,” a new Path muses as he joins the fray… this one isn’t the ‘main’ one, so you hazard a guess that it’s a ‘support’ Path that Pain sees as being less valuable than the one that keeps repairing his broken Paths. Correctly, you might admit.

These black chakra rods are incredibly dense and hard, meaning that they can parry your blade fairly well. They don’t last forever however, and with a particularly well-timed slash of Umekiri’s edge you can actually destroy them, cutting straight through and leaving a stub in Pain’s hands.

He must realize that prolonged close combat is a losing proposition for him, even with multiple bodies that won’t stay dead after you crush them, but you suppose that he simply hasn’t had a good opportunity to pull more of his Paths into this fight.

That is, until a large mushroom-shaped cloud across town suggests to you that he’s finished another fight that’s been running in parallel with yours…

“… Kakashi?” you wonder aloud, momentarily distracted.

“You should be focused on the task at hand,” Pain insists, this time with a new body… Yahiko’s.

“So, Akatsuki’s face has arrived at last,” you muse.

“… I can hardly believe it,” Yahiko scowls. “This… I could believe you’d get dragged into a fight this bad, but this?”

“Your face has served as the symbolic leader of Akatsuki long after your death,” Pain explains. “In a certain sense you have achieved what so many, even in Akatsuki, had sought… immortality.”

“At what cost!?”

“And did you ever consider how Konan-sensei would feel?” you demand. “Do you know how hard you’ve made it on her? Or did you even give a damn?”

Yahiko, the real one, seems ashamed at the thought and falls silent.

“Probably not,” Ajisai chimes in. “Sure didn’t ask me how I felt.”

“Like I said before,” you repeat yourself, “the man I could have respected is dead, replaced by a monster whose every action breaths more hatred and suffering into the world. Akatsuki cannot allow such a monster free rein… even if it was once one of our own.”

“The sentiments of a mere child,” Pain asserts. “The three of us once had a dream, but that dream did not survive in the face of cold, uncaring reality.”

“The logic of a man who gave up,” you counter, “and would love nothing more than if no one else ever tried. That way you don’t have to consider the possibility that you gave up too soon.”

“What are you trying to imply?”

“That you’re a coward,” you frown, refusing to dance around the issue. “That when working towards your dream got hard you gave up and rolled over, because it was easier to just hate everyone and everything.”

“And it’s not just yourself you let down, but everyone who ever believed in you. My father, Konan-sensei, Yahiko-senpai, all of Akatsuki.”

“You’re wrong,” Pain insists angrily. “You’re full of the same arrogance and short-sightedness as we were at your age, believing you can change a world that resists all attempts at change. Those with power see a revolutionary, even one with purely benevolent intentions, as a threat to their power, and so power ends up being wielded for its own sake.”

“That is not pessimism, that is simply an objective recognition of reality. And so to resolve this dilemma Akatsuki must have unrivalled power, such that our organization can write our will onto the politics of the world.”

“And the people we had weren’t enough?” you demand. “We had to go around picking fights with the whole world, attacking the jinchūriki even at the cost of our own? Seriously, I was never a fan of guys like Hidan, Kakuzu, or Deidara… but didn’t you kinda waste their lives?”

“If we still had you we would still have sufficient power to challenge the world,” he counters as the rain starts to fall now. “And you talk about betrayals.”

“It’s you who betrayed yourself,” you insist. “Even Konan-sensei agrees with me… in fact, I’d go so far as to say she wants to see me stop you.”

You’ve begun to use the chakra-laden rain to sense the battlefield around you, how the rain interacts with the surfaces and the chakra signatures onto which it falls, giving you a clear picture of the entire battlefield. And clung to a building within sight of you…

“Ajisai!” you bellow, having stuck five kunai prepared with special exploding tags into the invisible chameleon while Pain was looking at the illusory afterimage you left. “Do it now! Gojō Kibaku Fūda!”

With Ajisai’s help as a catalyst, you set off a series of explosions. First it begins with five… then twenty-five… then one hundred and twenty-five… then six hundred and twenty-five. Despite the fact that the chameleon definitely tried to move the explosions leave it nowhere to flee as they destroy an entire city block.

“Banshō Ten’in.”

You find yourself suddenly pulled towards the ‘main’ Pain, the one with Yahiko’s face, forcing you to plant your feet and dig your heels into the pavement below you. The invisible force however is stronger than the pavement, meaning that your heels carve little furrows into the surface as you’re pulled inwards anyway.

It’s during this interval that the Asura Path makes its move, growing back its second pair of arms and using all four to produce strands of miniature rockets. The explosives fall on you like the rain as you strain against the pull…

… and so you use a Kongō Fūsa whirling over your head as a shield against the blasts, before hiding yourself in the now-pelting rainfall created by Nyoka and leaping to safety.

You were so absorbed in fighting against the ‘main’ Pain that you failed to count the seconds he was pulling on you for, but you do try to count from this moment to see if there’s a reasonable interval between his attacks during which the other Paths will have to cover for him.

You also see that the support Path has revived the Animal Path after you blasted the chameleon apart around it.

So, what happens next…

The Animal Path summons two creatures: a giant panda, which used to be a summons for Ajisai in life, and a giant three-headed dog… the latter turns one head towards you.

“Ah, hell,” you realize what Pain is up to… a dog, presumably with a sense of smell to match.

Then something unexpected happens: the support Path grabs the Animal Path and hurls it high into the air… as in, obscenely high. You can feel its lightweight form arc out and over the wall of the village.

>Cooperate with Ajisai to test the ‘main’ Pain’s interval between attacks using exploding tags.

“Ajisai!” you shout, throwing another tagged kunai at the ‘main’ Pain… you really wish you had names for each of these guys. “Again!”

“Right!”

The Gojō Kibaku Fūda tags start to go off, multiplying as the other Pains scatter to get clear of the blast zone, while the Path you targetted uses a new technique to create a ‘shell’ around itself.

“Shinra Tensei!” he roars, before the overwhelming number of explosions drowns him out.

But as you’re testing him the blasts start to push outwards, back towards you and those you’ve summoned.

“Kongō Fūsa!”

You create a shell of your own, a sphere of golden sealing chains with a barrier between them that keeps the dozens of explosions at bay.

The technique ends, and you lower your barrier… Ajisai and Yahiko are both slowly reconstructing their bodies, and the Asura Path has timed its rocket-powered charge to coincide with you dropping the Kongō Fūsa to switch to the attack.

One.

The sound of the rainfall resumes as the Asura Path attacks with wickedly curved blades emerging from under its sleeve. You parry, but the blades prevent you from disarming the Path as easily as before… its two trailing ‘spare’ arms erupt in a spray of rockets.

Two.

You take a step back and attack with a wave of mixed paper tag shuriken… a few poisoned, a few ‘Tenran’-styled rasengan, a few regular explosions, and a few marked with your hiraishin formula.

Three.

The Asura Path uses a series of counter-explosions to protect itself, while the ‘main’ Path is forced to dodge the shuriken normally, suggesting to you that its ability hasn’t recovered, giving you at least a three-second window. But luckily for you, folding paper and hardening it isn’t all Konan-sensei taught you.

Four.

The shuriken around the ‘main’ Path curve and dance, some exploding after a delay, some forcing him to continue dodging lest he be carved open by a stray rasengan. Turning through the air you teleport to one of them with a flat swing of Umekiri’s edge that the Path has to backpedal, relying on the fields of vision provided by the other Paths to his advantage.

Five.

You take a step back and unleash another wave of tag shuriken, only to see them stop at the last possible moment.

“Shinra Tensei!”
>1/2
>>
>>4410117
Five seconds, you realize as you teleport away from the expanding blast of force rather than take your own shuriken to the face. Five seconds between those unseen, all-affecting techniques.

During those intervals the ‘main’ Path is entirely reliant on either the other Paths or simple taijutsu with his chakra receivers for both defense and offense. If he hadn’t spun these abilities off into separate bodies, Pain would have a much easier time managing that interval… the more you see him in action the more you can understand how Jiraiya-sensei would lose to him, but the more you also get the feeling that he’s actually much weaker this way.

You’d hate to have to fight him in his prime, with all his abilities used by one body.

You have to take stock of your options. So long as the other Paths are still capable of fighting you can’t take down the ‘main’ Path.

“Hey, Pain,” you demand of the nearest Path. “That Path I’ve been fighting, the one with Yahiko-han’s face. What’s it called?”

The path, which is one of the support Paths, regards you with some curiosity. “That Path is the Deva Path. This Path is the Preta Path. The one in back is the Naraka Path. The Asura Path and Animal Path you already know. The Human Path is absent at the moment, but I expect you will meet soon.”

“Alright, it was getting hard to keep track without knowing what to call them,” you admit, leaving behind an illusion to finish the conversation.

Then you make your move, hidden by the shroud of the falling rain.

“Ranton: Rekuyemu!”

The storm-transformed chakra surges and flows towards the Path you now know as the Naraka Path, only to be intercepted by a quick shunshin by the Preta Path. Strangely, your technique builds up massive power as it stops short of the Preta Path, before it begins to slowly disappear… the Preta Path absorbs chakra. You saw this when it countered Utakata’s acid attacks during that capture mission, and you could only speculate before as to how it functioned.

But you do learn something useful… the Preta Path’s hands start to turn to stone, and so you deliver a powerful roundhouse kick that shatters its right hand into rubble and catches it in the jaw, sending it careening through a wall.

In addition to learning that the Preta Path forms a barrier which can absorb even other chakra-absorbing ninjutsu that cross it, you learn that it’s vulnerable to the effects of over-absorbing natural energy. Feeding more natural energy into the Rekuyemu, and allowing it to start to absorb the Preta Path’s barrier in a clash of mutual chakra-absorption before the Preta Path’s barrier eventually won out, increased the amount of natural energy in the attack to the point where it became a danger to absorb.

"Heh," you muse, evading another series of explosives from the Asura Path before teleporting away from an attack by the giant multi-headed dog. "I'm starting to get you all figured out."
>2/3
>>
>>4410143
The key is the Asura Path.

With the Preta Path down for the count the Naraka Path will be busy reviving it for a few moments, so if you can take down the Asura Path none of the tools at Pain’s disposal will be relevant in defending the Deva Path in-between the use of its abilities. Even if the Naraka Path finishes with the Preta in time to start on the Asura immediately, the Preta Path won’t be enough. You already know how to beat it.

So when the Deva Path pulls you in again, you put a plan into motion.

The timing will be key, so the sharingan is absolutely fair game.

You watch in excruciating detail as the kunai you quickly prepared for this move strike home all around the Deva Path, setting off a series of explosions that once again are pushed outwards by the expanding sphere of force he can create.

But you’re not watching it with your eyes by that point. Instead you’ve slashed deep into the pavement with Umekiri and pried up the street with your fingertips, flipping a chunk of it like a tatami to dissipate the initial force of the blast wave. Even as the pavement crumbles under the foce of the Deva Path’s attack, you’re preparing for the next step.

One.

You dash out from behind your makeshift cover and throw five more kunai, with tags fluttering behind them, and watch with satisfaction as the Asura Path steps into a perfect line between you and the Deva Path. Pain’s expecting another attack with the Gojō Kibaku Fūda.

Two.

The kunai are right in front of the Asura Path now, and by focusing on the paper tags trailing behind them you execute the next phase of your plan. Three of the tags aren’t Gojō Kibaku Fūda tags at all, but instead are powerful flash bombs… yet another tool you can keep on your person at all times using fūinjutsu despite rarely having a use for them.

The flash bombs go off, concealing your next move.

Three.

You slice through the Asura Path with Umekiri’s edge, empowered by ranton chakra flow and delivered by teleporting to the fourth of your kunai. The power of the blow not only separates the Asura Path in half just below its ribs, but it also sends a powerful surge of electricity through the two halves, from the top of its shaved scalp to the tips of its toes, a distance that grows wider with every passing instant.

Four.

The fifth kunai, another marked not with the Gojō Kibaku Fūda that Pain clearly anticipated but with the hiraishin formula, nears Pain’s powerful Deva Path. This is cutting it close.

>Go for broke, hit it with another ranton-chakra flow technique and take it down. Try your damnedest to beat the clock.

You use a second hiraishin, even as the two halves of the Asura Path’s body are tumbling to the ground, and extend several Kongō Fūsa chains to encircle the Deva Path.

Five.

You’re not sure whether you would have made it in time had you gone for a direct attack, or whether a frontal charge with a ranton-empowered thrust would be able to break through his repulsive forces. And honestly that’s not important anymore. What is important is the fact that you managed to totally encircle the Deva Path just in the nick of time, and that despite the raw power behind his technique your barrier seems to buckle at first… but ultimately, it holds.

You can feel the strain, and you even go so far as to form a seal with your right hand, the one with Umekiri in it, to further focus your chakra on the task. Umekiri rests edge-up, arcing gently over your left shoulder in the same position it would be in were you running through a crowd of bystanders with it drawn.

But eventually the force ends as the Deva Path’s attack ends, and with a downward pull of your left hand past your left hip you pull the chains closed around him, Umekiri’s edge tilting slightly to prepare for a diagonal sweep to finish the job.

But an instant before you deliver the killing blow… a puff of smoke. Just like that the Deva Path is simply gone, and your Kongō Fūsa chains fall to the ground.

Looking around you can see that Ajisai and Yahiko-han are just as confused as you are that the other Paths are gone as well, having left the three-headed hound and the panda.

You close your eyes, sensing for the one thing that will help you divine Pain’s intentions… and find that Konan-sensei is no longer in the village. It’s so infuriating that you quite simply blow away the dog and the panda using Gojō Kibaku Fūda tags: not because you have to, but as a way to take out some of your anger in a vaguely productive way.

“Bastard,” you hiss. “So it’s going to be like that...”

“What?” Ajisai asks.

“He’s going to blow up the whole village,” you declare. “That’s why he threw the Animal Path over the wall and summoned Konan-sensei and his other Paths away. He knew I had him cornered and he was always planning on doing this anyway.”

“Well where is he?” Ajisai presses you. “Can you stop him?”

“I have no idea,” you admit. “And I doubt he’ll give me an easy opening to counterattack… so even if I can spot him in time, and come up with a way to do it, I’d be gambling everyone’s lives on it.”

“So it’s either gamble everything on a single strike,” Ajisai summarizes, “or prepare for the worst and save everyone you can.”

“Exactly,” you frown. "It's not just my own pride, but thousands of innocents that Pain is preparing to murder."

>Wait for Pain to make his next move and try to find a way to intercept him… put everything onto this high-risk, high-reward gamble.

We know Pain is strong as fuck and he still has his Paths protecting him. Going and trying to geek Pain would be hella difficult.

We have hiraishin and this is good moment to use clones. We can be everywhere super fast and save so many lives.

If you act immediately, you have it in your power to guarantee the survival of thousands of people: expecting to do more than that would be simple hubris on your part, to fall into the trap of thinking yourself a god simply because you have power that others do not.

And that is a mistake you do not wish to emulate.

You create three shadow clones to split the tasks. The first stays here to dispel Ajisai and Yahiko, who don’t need to be here any more… their jobs being done, they should be returned to the afterlife. They both eventually agree, and Ajisai explicitly tells you she’ll be watching closely from the Pure Land to see how this ends. This clone subsequently dispels herself to save the chakra.

The second clone teleports to a visibly bloodied but not yet beaten Sasuke and teleports him to the roof of the Konoha Hospital. The third clone does the same to Tsunade-han, leaving her in the care of your second clone before dispelling herself.

You personally head for the Hokage Monument, where the civilian evacuation shelters are located.

Using the sharingan, you see what happens next with excruciating, horrific detail. From a height of three hundred meters, which would have been a very nearly impossible target to intercept considering the timing involved, he releases a Shira Tensei on a different level entirely from the ones you’ve seen so far. The blast wave hits in almost the exact center of the village and scours a small circle down to bare dirt before reflecting back upwards in a phenomenon that until today has been totally theoretical. Even had you raised the Taiyōmon… the blast was omnidirectional, and was pushing down onto the village from above. It would have made little difference.

Entire city blocks are reduced to dust and shrapnel in seconds by this doubled shockwave, which eventually pushes entire crumbling buildings off their foundations and carries them away. Shinobi unfortunate enough to still be out there are swept up in it… the few unfortunates nearest the hypocenter are simply pulped by the force, while a few hundred meters away anyone still on their feet has time to scramble for cover or to dodge the debris coming their way.

Without Katsuyu none of these shinobi would stand a chance.

The shock front would have destroyed the hospital completely if you hadn’t raised a Kongō Fūsa barrier that forces the destruction to take a wide path around you, and a few blocks beyond that dome of safety are the accidental beneficiaries of it as well. Literally thousands of helpless victims that inundated the hospital as a result of Pain’s diversionary attack, and hundreds of medical personnel treating them, would have been crushed a second time.

Debris literally flows out through the huge gates into the village like a wave as the blast reaches the outer walls, including the Hokage monument. Here you strain to keep the walls and ceilings from collapsing onto the terrified evacuees… the shelters were never designed to take this sort of damage, and three of the largest would have become mass tombs had you not prevented it.

After passing out of the village the shockwave begins to lose its power, but is still more than sufficient to part the clouds in a wide ring over Konohagakure.

You have to use your Mangekyō to perform a massive earth chakra flow, restructuring the ceilings of the shelters so that they won’t come down the minute you step away.

Your shadow clone at the hospital pops once she realizes that Tsunade and Sasuke are both safe. The effort you've gone through leaves you exhausted, and out of Sage Mode, with one eye dripping blood and your entire body feeling like lead in a way even the fight with Pain didn't. But in spite of that... you saved what was important.

Instead of collapsing you find a set of shoulders under each of your arms, helping you back to the entrance of the shelter where you can see the devastation again, with your own eyes.

"I can't believe it," a familiar voice, a young woman's, mutters. "How could this happen?"

"We still have our lives," an unfamiliar voice, an older man's, replies. "Raishō Naori, wasn't it?"

"That's me," you reply wearily. "Who're you?"

"Umino-sensei," he replies. "I'm an instructor at the Academy... Sasuke-kun asked me to come here to escort the last group of civilians."

"Then well done," you tell him.

"What do you want us to do, Naori-san?"

"... you're on my left side," you realize. "I didn't recognize you, Ayame-han... all I need is a moment or two to catch my breath."

"Don't be stupid!" she protests. "You're obviously hurt!"

"Exhausted yes," you correct her. "Not one wound on me. You'll see I bounce back pretty quickly."

...

There's a large puff of smoke at the center of the crater.

You ignore Naruto-kun's untimely arrival for now, focusing solely on your own chakra reserves. "Second Gate: Gate of Rest."

Your body rapidly revitalizes, and your chakra returns... enough that you can go back into Sage Mode and step away from your escorts.

"Thank you both," you bow politely. "But I'll be fine from here."

"But... you were just..." Ayame stammers at your apparently miraculous recovery.

"You just saved thousands of lives," Umino-sensei adds. "Don't overdo it... that must've taken a lot of chakra."

"It did," you admit, drawing a marked kunai and slinging it out into the center of the crater with your enhanced strength. "But Pain will be back for round two any moment now that Naruto-kun is here."

"Wait, Naruto is..." Umino-sensei begins before you cut him off.
>2/3
>>
>>4411574
"Keep protecting these people," you instruct him. "Ayame... keep helping, in any way you can. I'll see to things out there, so don't worry."

"... okay," she replies hesitantly.

...

First you teleport not to the kunai but to your hideout, interrupting the others as they wait patiently for word from their shadow clones.

"What's happen..." Karin demands as you rush past her, looking for your small stash of Uchiha eye medication.

"I'm taking this bye," you tell her quickly.

"Hang on, are you..."

...

Then you teleport to the kunai you threw, to find that Pain has just summoned his Paths back into the village. All the progress you've made, except for the stress on Nagato's chakra reserves, has been undone.

"Naori..." Naruto mutters grimly. "What the hell happened?"

"Gravity bomb," you reply curtly. "The path with the little spikes in his lips did all this... it was all I could do to save as many people as I could."

"Still, you did well," Sasuke-kun insists as he joins you in the bottom of the crater, along with Tsunade-han. "Let someone else handle it this time."

His eyes are different...

"As the Hokage I cannot allow this to go unanswered!" Tsunade declares angrily... though you can tell she's every bit as exhausted as you were before, even with one eye still fuzzy from overuse.

"Stay out of this, granny Tsunade," Naruto growls. "The Hokage shouldn't dirty her hands with this trash."

Sasuke smirks. "For once, it seems Naruto-kun and I are in total agreement. Surely that counts for something?"

"Pain is no joke," you admit. "I was two moves from beating all six Paths before he flipped the proverbial table... but even so, it coulda gone the other way."

"Are you sure about this?"

Naruto glances at you, confirming what you suspected: he's attained a perfect Sage Mode to match your own. "Yeah. I'm sure."

“Then we’ll sort out the other details later,” you sigh.

Tsunade-han glances at you in shock. “You can’t be serious!”

“I have no right to tell them not to,” you declare. “But there’s also something that I need to do that’s non-negotiable. I’ll take the Animal Path myself.”

“No,” Naruto counters. “Get granny Tsuna...”

“The Animal Path was my friend,” you interrupt him with a cold fury creeping back into your tone. “I won’t let Pain continue to defile her corpse like this.”

There’s a very loud silence for a few seconds as Naruto realizes the gravity of what you’ve told him.

“… okay. Sorry I asked.”

The Animal Path summons the rhino first, which Naruto responds to. He summons a shadow clone that grabs Tsunade and whisks her back to where some of her ANBU can take over, while his true body grabs the rhino by its horn and hurls it into the air.

Meanwhile you’ve charged, Umekiri raised, only to find your sword stopped for a moment by the heavy iron gate Ajisai used to summon. You slice through this with a surge of lightning chakra, but not before the Animal Path summons its chameleon, which hides the Naraka Path as it disappears, as well as the three-headed dog and drill-beaked bird that attack the toads along with the giant enemy crab.

“You finished now?” you ask Pain. “It’s just a waste of your chakra you know.”

You flick the Tenryushi from its sheath using your thumb, which the Animal Path parries with a black chakra receiver, using it like a short sword. The tantō spins in the air, and you teleport yourself to it through the hiraishin seal, turning through the air to attack from above.

But you know that the other Paths and the summons can see you here, so the Animal Path is going to be able to raise its improvised weapon and parry you. So you make no effort to actually attack. Instead you briefly blend yin and lightning-transformed chakra in Umekiri’s blade, producing a blinding, omnidirectional flash.

“Dōjigiri Raigen!”

In that moment of genjutsu-induced blindness, when the Animal Path has lifted its weapon in anticipation of a potentially lethal downward blow, you instead throw Tenryushi again past its shoulder.

As the blindness clears, the Animal Path glances down to see that you’ve stabbed it through the heart.

“You made a mistake,” you growl. “I hate what you’ve done, and I intend to stop you with my own two hands. But I don’t hate you. If anything I’m grateful to you, because you’re an example to me… of what to never, ever allow myself to become.”

With an additional surge of lightning to make sure you’ve fried the Animal Path well and good, its summons begin to disappear.

The Animal Path slumps over your shoulder, and you awkwardly sheath your blades before using a shunshin to get as far away from the ongoing battle as possible.

“Wha-” Sakura gasps as you stop near her, at the rim of the massive crater. “What are you doing here!?

“What I must,” you reply sternly, laying Ajisai’s body down and examining the chakra receivers embedded into her body. “You’re a medic-nin, right? Help me with this.”

“With what?”

“With pulling these damn things out of her.”

Sakura shakes her head. “Why do that? I heard from Karin that you knew her...”

“And you think she’s been through enough,” you summarize. “Pain uses these to control the Paths. Remove them and we remove any chance that Pain can quickly repair this Path like he did multiple times during our fight.”

“I can also do this,” you smirk, using your senjutsu-enhanced senses to trace the connection between Nagato’s actual chakra and one of the receivers in your hand. You give him a real shock when he realizes what you’ve done.

“I know where he is,” you declare. “The puppet-master.”

“Really!?” Sakura asks you excitedly. “Then let’s go get him!”

“He’s not going anywhere,” you declare, continuing to pull the rods out of Ajisai’s body.

Sakura watches in stunned silence as you finish your task, close her eyes, and fold her hands over her chest.

“What, you mean to just let this play out?” Sakura demands.

You glance over your shoulder at her. “Shouldn’t we?”

“But Naruto-kun and Sasuke-kun are out there fighting...” Sakura declares hesitantly.

“You don’t have faith in their strength?” you muse. “Naruto-kun has become a sage, and Sasuke has awakened the Mangekyō sharingan. “They’ve grown powerful, but power isn’t enough. That line of thinking leads you to where Pain is now.”

“I don’t understand what you’re saying.”

“You wouldn’t.”

“There’s something I need to see to,” you declare, leaving Sakura with a shadow clone.

“What could possibly be more important than this fight?” Sakura demands. “Or for that matter, tracking down Pain and...”

“And what?” you interrupt. “And kill him? No, Sakura-kun. No, that’s too easy. I don’t plan to kill Pain… I plan to destroy what he stands for.”

“This is the next step in doing that.”

“I’m glad to see you well, Naori-kun,” Konan-sensei greets you, having approached you in the forests outside Konohagakure’s wall. It’s that route which leads up to the top of the hill that the Hokage Monument is carved into, somewhere beyond which Nagato is waiting for you.

You’ve been waiting for her, sitting on a boulder in a small clearing near the footpath. “Same.”

“I’m sorry that it’s under such circumstances,” she apologizes quietly, leaning against a nearby tree trunk.

“… same.”

“I take it you know where Nagato is hidden,” she guesses.

“I do,” you admit. “At least within a degree of certainty.”

“That’s good,” Konan-sensei muses.

“You wanted this to happen?”

She nods thoughtfully. “I had hoped that you and Yahiko would reach Nagato… but I also understood that there was a chance Yahiko’s reappearance would just reopen Nagato’s wounds. I’m not one to easily put faith in strangers, but Jiraiya-sensei’s last student… he is probably one who could get through to him.”

“I understand that this needs to be his decision,” you admit, “same as it has to be Naruto and Sasuke’s decisions to fight him… but thousands of people have died, sensei, and you still won’t tell me what your plan is.”

“I want to trust you, but what you’re asking from me is closer to blind...”

Konan-sensei interrupts you with an embrace.

“I’m sorry for putting you through all of this,” she insists quietly. “I’ve gone along with far too much for far too long. I know that. But I also know more about the Rinnegan than almost anyone else… and I know more about Nagato than that mandoes. The one you know as Tobi.”

“What I’ve been counting on is Nagato, both what I know he can do and who I know him to be. I don’t want to tell you anything more than that, because this isn’t a burden I want you to share.”

Before you can fully process the moment, and decide whether or not to return her embrace, it’s already over. The moment passes.

“Now is not the time,” she continues. “For this to stand the best chance of working, both you and Uzumaki Naruto need to be there. Jiraiya-sensei’s last student, the one who has inherited his ideals… and you, Amegakure’s prodigal daughter, inheritor of the original Akatsuki’s ideals and the one who has most resoundingly rejected Pain’s philosophy.”

“And… for that matter… if you can bring Karin with you, that might be meaningful.”

You pick up on the common thread. “Konan-sensei… is Nagato...”

“You will see for yourself,” she insists quietly.

“Other than this, what are things in Amegakure like now?” you enquire. “As much as my hideouts feel like home now, it’s been a while since I was able to go back.”

“The Ibuki twins have been fine,” Konan informs you. “As you no doubt would have hoped, there was no retribution for your departure.”

“That’s a relief.”

“Had Nagato pushed for it I would not have allowed it,” she shakes her head. “But I was grateful not to have to have that confrontation.”

“And the shrine?”

“Much the same as you left it. The head abbot asked me about you.”

“What did you tell him?”

“The truth,” Konan tells you calmly. “That you left to make your own path. He asked me to wish you well on his behalf the next time we met.”

“That sounds like him,” you muse. “I assume the weather has been suitably dismal?”

“Actually, it was sunny for a few days right after you left.”

You shake your head. “That’s a lie, isn’t it?”

“Of course it is,” Konan insists. “The village was named for the rain for a reason.”

...

You are a shadow clone of Raishō Naori, left behind as an observer and commentator for the shinobi of Konohagakure who won’t be able to follow what’s about to happen.

“Pain won’t be messing around this time,” you frown, seating yourself as though in meditation and gathering natural energy. “He already made the mistake of taking me too lightly at first, and lost Paths because of it. He’ll go all-out from the start.”

A predictable arrangement… the remaining five Paths organize themselves with the Naraka Path in the back. But the Deva Path and Asura Path remain near to the Naraka Path, with the other two Paths moving up on their own.

“I see,” you muse. “Fire support, then.”

“Fire support?” Sakura repeats. “What do you...”

She gets her answer before she finishes asking the question.
>1/?
>>
>>4415338
The Asura Path extends two of its arms on chains of explosives, releasing them in waves that force Naruto and Sasuke away from each other, allowing the Human Path and the Preta Path to close in against them. Meanwhile, its other two arms break apart at the hands, firing massive beams of chakra at the giant toads that were summoned together with Naruto.

“Those toads are just big targets,” you muse as one is sent back to Mount Myōboku in a cloud of smoke and another is blasted back as it blocks the attack with a shield, shaped like a massive sake dish. “They were useful against the Animal Path’s summons… not so much with those gone.”

“You talk like you know a lot,” Sakura grumbles.

“I fought them first, remember?” you muse. “But then again that may help… look at how the Deva Path hasn’t acted yet. It’s been way more than five seconds… Pain must be growing exhausted having to fight them immediately after fighting me.”

“At the rate the Asura Path is using up chakra… they may stand a chance. But it’s bound to be close.”

“Why?” Sakura demands.

“I’d say Naruto can probably only use his sage mode for about two minutes,” you guess, “assuming the toads don’t have some secret way to replenish natural energy while moving. So he probably brought those old geezer toads to reverse-summon shadow clones from Mount Myōboku as batteries.”

“Considering how heavily his style revolves around shadow clones I’d say he could probably split his focus… three ways,” you make another guess. “Certainly no more than four, for a generous eight minutes at maximum power.”

“See!” you add as Naruto is forced to fall back and have one of the geezer toads do exactly what you just told Sakura they’d do. “That’s one replenishment.”

“And Sasuke?” she demands. “Why lump him in the same category as Naruto? What do you know?”

“That the Mangekyō sharingan is prone to strain,” you explain. “He’s already had to rely on the Susano’o to defend against an explosive… much more of that and he’ll be in trouble.”

“His eyes will start to bleed from the eyestrain, and eventually he’ll start to go blind. Push too far past that warning point and the blindness will start to become cumulative. Eventually he’ll need a transplant.”
>2/?
>>
>>4415339
The battle progresses too slowly to favor Naruto and Sasuke.

Naruto’s flashy ninjutsu finishers can’t connect past the Preta Path, the toads are no help, and while Sasuke is able to knock out the Human Path with a chidori-based kenjutsu attack he’s unable to make any headway past the Asura and Deva Paths towards the Naraka Path, which you have to assume he knows is the key to Pain’s whole strategy. He’s also learned the hard way that the Preta Path can simply absorb his Amaterasu, making his usage of it a complete waste of energy.

“With the Naraka Path still in play all the other Paths are expendable,” you explain. “And with the Asura and Preta Paths, they’ll have a tough time breaking through to the Deva Path.”

Naruto launches a desperate gamble, creating a pair of smoke bombs from some regular rasengans out of which he launches another rasenshuriken… no, not a rasenshuriken, a feint?

“Yes!” you cheer loudly as you realize what he’s come up with. Without the top-down view from the Animal Path’s summons, Pain doesn’t realize until after the Preta Path absorbs a transformation ninjutsu that the real attack is coming down onto the Naraka Path from above.

That leaves the Preta Path, the Asura Path, and the Deva Path… the last of which, oddly enough, still has yet to make a move.

“Alright!” Sakura cheers as well. “It’s just down to three now, right!?”

“It’s the worst three to face in a fair fight,” you admit, “but the Naraka Path is another heavy blow, after the Animal Path.”

“Come on...” you mutter. “Take the Deva Path out while you can… come on...”

… they don’t do that.

Instead Naruto takes out the Asura Path while Sasuke takes out the Preta Path, the former hitting hard with a rasenshuriken and the latter landing a clean slash with his sword after using Amaterasu to block its line of sight.

“Too late,” you mutter just before the Deva Path blasts them backwards with a Shinra Tensei.

Both are slow to get back to their feet, with Sasuke in particular seeming worse for wear.

“What was that?” Sakura demands an explanation.

“That’s the Path that destroyed your village,” you tell her. “And now Pain’s attention isn’t divided.”

Things go about as poorly from there as you expected. The Deva Path blasts a visibly exhausted Sasuke halfway across the crater, and once Naruto’s senjutsu reserves are exhausted it easily pins him to the ground with a chakra receiver through his hands.

“Naori, you have to do something!” Sakura protests.
>3/?
>>
>>4415342
“No,” you reply curtly.

“And why not!?”

“Because I’m already on my way to where the real Pain is,” you remind her. “So right now, the best thing I can do is let Pain waste his time being a misanthropic bastard while I take a page from Naruto’s book and gather nature energy.”

“And so long as no one does anything stupid, Pain’s likely to waste his time monologuing at Naruto about how bad his life in Amegakure was...”

But of course, at that very moment, someone was deciding to do something stupid.

By the time you realize that Hyūga Hinata intends to intervene, the Deva Path has already pulled her off her feet and impaled her on a chakra receiver.

That doesn’t immediately stop her though, as she struggles back to her feet. Even Pain seems a little confused as to where this sudden resolve has come from… but not impressed mind you, or at least not enough to spare her. You’re on your way to the center of the crater when Pain lifts her up into the air and smashes her back down.

This time she doesn’t get up.

You are Raishō Naori, and your mind is flooded by the experiences of your shadow clone.

“Here,” you tell Konan-sensei, handing her a hiraishin-marked kunai hilt-first. “Take this with you, keep it hidden when you go to Nagato’s hiding place. There’s something I have to do.”

Even your former sensei seems to feel what’s happening back in the village. “Go.”

When you teleport to the kunai left by your clone before she dispersed herself, you’re immediately forced to dodge a long, clawed arm made entirely out of chakra.

Naruto is on a rampage, shrouded the same way that Utakata was… only over top of the chakra cloak is a layer of fox-like bones. You count six tails, and only one Pain.

“You picked an interesting time to return!” the Deva Path taunts you.

The clear plan is to get these two out of the village… there’s been enough suffering and destruction here already without a stray tailed beast ball ruining everyone’s day even further.

“But how do I do that,” you muse with a frown.

In the mean time the situation begins to escalate, with Naruto’s chakra cloak ripping up huge chunks of terrain and slinging them wildly, both at Pain and at you. He’s lost control… and because he’s not being careful Hinata’s going to be the one who suffers for it at this rate.

You toss out dozens of hiraishin-marked paper shuriken, using one of them at the last possible second to dodge a building-sized mass of stone and a second to reappear at Hinata’s side. After grabbing her by the shoulder you teleport again, reappearing next to Sakura.

“You’re a medic-nin,” you tell her curtly. “Pick your jaw up off the ground and make yourself useful.”

“Wait… Hinata’s alive?” Sakura gasps.

“Get started now and you can keep her that way,” you insist, before teleporting back into the fray.

With the same question as before, of course… how to get them out of the village?

You have to raise the Taiyōmon behind Pain to keep a series of powerful blasts of chakra from overshooting and hitting the Hokage Monument before you can repeat your maneuver with Sasuke, getting him away from the battle just in time. The Deva Path summons a large mass of water seemingly from underground shortly after you do, which probably would have drowned Sasuke had you not intervened.

“This is… getting out of hand,” Sasuke mutters. “I still wish I could see it though.”

“Rest your eyes,” you insist quietly, pressing a small vial of eye medication into his hands, “and put a few drops of this into each of your eyes. We’ll check your condition later.”

Then you teleport again, back into the battlefield in the new circular lake, silently thanking the Second and Fourth Hokages for creating and perfecting such a useful technique.

As much as you want to be able to solve this problem, the two are too far apart and moving too quickly during their fight to get both of them with your Kongō Fūsa at the same time… either you’d trap Pain and give Naruto an opportunity to run wild unopposed, or you’d trap Naruto and be left holding the proverbial bag when Pain used that time to escape.

But Pain solves your problem for you, quite unexpectedly, when he makes a break for a gap in the defensive wall at the edge of the village.

He’s running back to where his real body is hidden?

Thankfully… and worryingly… Naruto gives chase.
>1/2
>>
>>4416226
Despite needing to rely on the Second Gate just to keep yourself going at this pace, you follow as well.

The chase takes you into the forest, well into the range where a stray blast from Naruto’s mindless fit of rage could conceivably hit Nagato where he’s been hiding the whole time. But eventually the Deva Path makes its move, creating a dense black sphere of chakra high above the ground that begins to strip the trees first… then the soil and stone beneath them, pulling everything up towards that dense core including Naruto.

And, thanks to your proximity, you.

Where Naruto continues to fire powerful blasts of chakra from his mouth, which are easily blocked by Pain’s gravitic manipulation, simply seeming to glance off an invisible shell around his Deva Path, you create a shadow clone transformed into the type of wood-handled kunai that you use for carrying your hiraishin marking, and place a marking onto her.

Then you throw her at the new treeline, using the massively enhanced strength offered by stacking sage mode and the Eight Gates together to place a marking just outside the radius where Pain’s technique is pulling up the earth, before teleporting back to the village.

“Are you… okay?” Sakura asks you when you return, leaning Sasuke up against a section of wall near where Sakura has been treating Hinata.

“Just focus on your own task,” you insist, feeling out of breath even despite the Second Gate’s effects. “I’ll be fine in a moment.”

Eventually you get a ‘signal’ from your shadow clone, having created then dispelled a shadow clone of her own, and teleport to where you left her.

“You didn’t miss much,” she admits before dispelling herself as well.

Pain has partially encased Naruto… no, Kurama… in a massive stone sphere floating high above the ruined forest. He struggles to free himself as chakra and bone are wrapped in muscle fibers.

Then, suddenly, Kurama is gone. Just like that it’s not a giant tailed beast but Uzumaki Naruto standing on the surface of the stone sphere.

You decide to watch and see how this goes, sensing that both Naruto and Pain are exhausted… but also sensing that Naruto still has a little senjutsu chakra left to use.

The two continue their fight as the giant sphere Pain created begins to crumble, having failed in its purpose.

“It’s time to settle this!” the Deva Path declares.

“Take me to where the real Pain is!” Naruto demands. “I want to speak with you face-to-face!”

“Even were I to do that there could be no understanding between you and I,” the Deva Path counters, clashing with Naruto using a black receiver to defend himself. “Our discussion is over, more talk will change nothing!”

As expected Naruto maintains the advantage in close combat, using Pain’s own receiver to track him before launching a rasenshuriken from out of two smoke bombs an instant before he runs out of senjutsu chakra.

Pain uses his Shinra Tensei… to find that the rasenshuriken he thought was about to kill him was actually a shadow clone that tries to bind him in place for the real rasenshuriken behind it to hit. That doesn’t last long, as the Deva Path manages to stab the shadow clone and leap to evade the rasenshuriken, which creates a cloud of rubble…

… and the rubble bursts into more shadow clones by the time Pain lands after his leap.

It’s such a chaotic, haphazard, brute-force strategy that you honestly lost track of the all-important timing, basically forgetting that you’re watching Naruto fight. His movements are slower than yours, so it catches you by surprise that the Deva Path gets the full five seconds it needs to recharge its abilities.

But instead of being blown away, Naruto uses his own shadow clones to brace his real body, only just managing to stay on his feet. Instead the whole pile slides back to the outside of Pain’s range, forcing Naruto to create a regular rasengan and charge to try to close the distance.

“Kuchiyose: Isoka!”

A Tenkyū from extreme range pierces through the Deva Path’s knee, causing it to buckle just as he prepares to unleash another Shinra Tensei. In that instant he realizes what you and Isoka have done, and too late he realizes that for just that instant he forgot about Naruto, who he’d probably already written off.

And because of that momentary lapse in concentration, he can’t release his counter-technique in time. The rasengan hits him square in the chest, and that’s it.
>1/?
>>
>>4416528
“Nice job, Isoka,” you tell the excited little bird. “Perfect shooting.”

“As always!” she preens herself on your fingertip. “Who was that guy anyway?”

“I’ll tell you about it later,” you chuckle before she disappears in a puff of smoke.

“It’s over,” you tell Naruto. “You feeling okay?”

“… it isn’t over,” he replies quietly. “There’s still somethin’ I’ve gotta do.”

“… yeah. I know. I’ll meet you there.”

You teleport back to Konohagakure to find that Guy and his team have arrived, and are all crowded around Hinata. She’s just now able to sit up after treatment.

“The Deva Path is done now,” you explain. “Naruto’s a little shaken, but he’s okay. We’re about to finish things.”

“Hang on,” Tenten interrupts. “What do you mean ‘finish things’, exactly?”

“I don’t quite know,” you admit, contemplating the question yourself. “But I’m curious to see it myself.”

“That’s not an answer,” Sasuke observes, a wet rag over his eyes at the moment.

“… let me know how it goes, okay?”

“Can do, Sasuke-han,” you reply politely. “I’ll make sure Naruto-kun doesn’t overdo it.”

“Right,” Sasuke grumbles. “I guess someone should.”

Next you teleport back to the safehouse to find that Fū, Yugito, and Karin are all perfectly safe.

“You look awful!” Fū greets you nervously.

“Is the village...” Yugito begins.

You shake your head. “I don’t know. The threat is basically gone now, but it’s not looking good.”

“Karin.”

“Hm?” she replies. “Me?”

You nod. “I’ve been told you should come with me.”

“Why?”

“We're about to find out.”
>2/3
>>
>>4416541
“Konan, what is the meaning of this!?” Nagato demands from his throne of pipes and receivers… some sort of massive, mobile life-support system? “Why have you brought her here!?”

You retrieve the marked kunai you gave to your sensei, who had tossed it into the ground in front of Nagato probably just a few seconds ago. The man looks like he's a hundred years older than Konan, and not the same age... what the hell could possibly have done this? Was it overusing the Rinnegan, or years of immobility? Or is this just what hatred looks like when it manifests in a person to this degree and for this long?

“This conversation had to happen,” Konan replies bluntly.

“She was telling the truth? You have betrayed me!”

Konan shakes her head. “No. You betrayed yourself, a long time ago. What I’m trying to do is help you and you can’t even see that the way you are now.”

Your eyes widen as you realize what Konan meant before… Karin sees it too now. Even in the dim light you can tell that Nagato’s hair is like yours, and Karin’s… and like your respective mothers’. You know who he is now.

“An Uzumaki,” you mutter.

You wait for a few tense minutes for Naruto to find his way here as well, and the collection is suddenly complete.

“So you’re the real Pain...” Naruto realizes.

“And you really did come here,” Nagato replies. “I had still intended to capture you, but it seems that I find myself surrounded by enemies. So then, Uzumaki Naruto, I believe you wanted to talk with me? Let me start by asking… do you hate me?”

Naruto clenches his fist, and you cross your arms, waiting for his reply. He’s struggling with it.

“… yes,” he admits. “It’s taking everything I have to hold back from killing you right here.”

“That is the way of the world,” Nagato insists. “Hatred breeding more hatred in a never-ending cycle that traps us all… existence in this world is suffering. And I need your power to break that cycle.”

“Even if it means murdering thousands of people to get it!?” Naruto demands, blood dripping from his fist. His eyes have grown slitted, in addition to the toad-like pupils you’ve only just noticed accompany his sage mode. It’s a visible effect of his anger. “No… I’m not going to kill you. That’s not what I came here to do.”

“Then what did you come here for?”

“I came here to ask you,” he begins, “what the hell happened to you? You were Jiraiya-sensei’s student too once, right? How’d it come to this?”

“You wish to know my story?” Nagato muses. “Very well. I suppose you’ve earned the right to know why I wish your death.”

“I was born in a little village outside Amegakure proper, not long before the Second World War reached that place. My mother Fūso, as you may have guessed, was a refugee of the Uzumaki clan. My father, Ise, was a physician. They worked together to provide care for a poor rural community, in the belief that even the poor get sick and hurt and need to be cared for. We never had much money, sometimes their patients couldn’t even pay at all. But they believed in their work, and we were happy with what we had.”

“Then the war came. Twisted ankles, rheumatism, and the odd case of food poisoning gave way to amputations, concussions, and poison gas attacks.”

“One day, while we were sitting down to dinner, three shinobi from Konohagakure found our home. They were probably hungry, looking for an easy meal, and my parents decided to hide. They hoped to avoid any conflict… to just let them take from us and leave in peace. But that wasn’t how it went at all. The shinobi killed my parents in a panic, in cold blood. That was the first time I ever killed, and it was the day I became a war orphan.”
>1/?
>>
>>4417114
“I don’t know how long I was on my own. At my lowest I nearly starved to death by the side of the road. But out of my lowest, came hope. That was the same day I met Konan, and Yahiko. We looked out for each other as best we could, stealing food to get by, living in caves to get out of the rain.”

“Eventually Yahiko had the idea of finding us a teacher, who could help us grow strong enough to look out for ourselves. In the aftermath of a battle is when we found the Sannin… Orochimaru wanted to kill us. Tsunade was unsure what to do. But Jiraiya took pity on us, perhaps out of a sense of guilt more than anything else, and spent several years training us.”

“Over the few years after Jiraiya-sensei left us, we gathered up comrades who like us were tired of the endless wars that plagued our homeland. This became Akatsuki, an organization of like-minded idealists banded together under Yahiko’s charismatic leadership. We were successful at first, wildly so, protecting local villages from attack and generally keeping the peace. It wasn’t long before we started to attract attention from less idealistic shinobi.”

“One day we were approached by a messenger claiming to be from Hanzō of the Salamander. He said that Hanzō had been impressed by our successes and wished to discuss a partnership to bring peace to Amegakure once and for all. But it was a ruse… instead he had partnered with Shimura Danzō, one of the elders of Konohagakure with his own faction of ANBU, and lay a trap for us.”

“They took Konan hostage, and at the meeting instead of coming to an agreement Hanzō ordered me to take Yahiko’s life. I took up the kunai, at a loss for what to do. Yahiko was the one who took matters into his own hands, impaling himself on that kunai as I held it in a stupor. I killed many of Hanzō’s men, and many ANBU as well. But it made no difference. Yahiko was dead, and Danzō’s men had slaughtered the rest of Akatsuki while we were separated.”
>2/?
>>
>>4417118
“That was when, in despair, we turned to a man claiming to be Uchiha Madara… Yahiko did not trust him, but we saw little alternative… his words to us had seemed to be prophetic in retrospect. He had contacts, and helped us to recruit stronger members into the organization. That was when Akatsuki was reborn… to the black cloaks from our original uniforms, we added the red clouds: symbols of the blood spilled on our homeland’s soil by the endless wars of the so-called ‘great’ shinobi nations.”

That is my story,” Nagato concludes. “And what of the three of you? Born to refugees from Uzushiogakure… one used as a vessel for the Nine-Tails, hated and despised by the same village that claims to value its citizens. One watched her mother killed for her chakra, only to suffer years of that same abuse at the hands of the hidden village which took them in. One lost her father when Shimura Danzō had the Akatsuki slaughtered, then lost her mother to Konohagakure’s indiscriminate use of poison gas… then lost her first team and her childhood friend to the mistakes of the other ‘great nations’ which they failed to clean up themselves.”

“The three of you are living proof of the truth of this world,” Nagato declares. “All three of you have experienced the hell that shinobi have created for themselves. And you have the nerve to tell me that I’m wrong? You cry out that my plan to save the world from itself is evil, but where is your plan?”

“How do you intend to save the world, Uzumaki Naruto!?”

Naruto is silent for a few moments. “You may be right. Maybe this world is full of too much hate… Jiraiya-sensei tried to tell me that once. It really bothered him, you know? But he always believed that if we kept searching for an answer we’d find it some day.”

“He had faith in that,” Naruto declares. “And I have faith in it too. Way too many people have entrusted way too many important things to me to give up now… so if such a thing as true peace exists in this world I’ll find it, and grab it with my own two hands.”

Nagato winces as though he’s been physically struck. “Those words...”

“Yeah,” Naruto agrees quietly. “Pervy sage was really trying to change the world with that book. And the main character in that story… his name is Naruto. My name is a precious gift from my parents, and from my sensei… but those words he wrote. In the back of the book he dedicated them to a student he had once… that student was you.”

“I had nothing when my mother died,” Karin admits. “I felt helpless, trapped… I knew that if I stepped out of line I’d be killed, so I endured that torture just for the chance at living another day.”

“But I was rescued from that, by a good person who had nothing in it for herself… she’d tell me she just did it because she felt like it, and I’d write it off as being modest. But I’ve learned it’s actually true, there really are people in this world that are worth believing in. I’ve even met one from the same village that used me, that used my mom until it killed her.”

“You can’t judge people by where they’re from, or any other circumstances of their birth,” Karin declares. “And you can’t say that just because there are things that are wrong with the world that it’s worth destroying everything… so many people in Konoha were hurt because of you, who never had anything to do with what you’re talking about.”

“So even if you have a few points… I can’t agree with you, because I want to be the kind of person who stands up for others, like that person stood up for me, instead of the kind that tears people down to their level.”

“I went along with what you were saying for a while,” you admit. “The simplicity of it was appealing… deprive the warmongers of their toys and bring them to the table. Seriously, it sounded like a good plan.”

“The trouble was, even if it was a good plan in theory in practice you ignored the human element of it all. Ajisai’s death, the lack of hesitation over sacrificing the jinchūriki, the pointless brutality our organization treated Fū and Yugito with.”

“Basically, I did what you didn’t. I learned from my failures, from my pain, and moved on. I resolved to do better, and to be better, and that led me out from under your shadow. It’s why I have to stop you.”

You shake your head. “We’re a little alike in terms of where we come from, for sure. But when it comes to who we are, we’re nothing alike.”

“How can you be so sure of yourselves?” he demands. “Can you promise me that you’ll never change?”

“It’s just who I am,” Naruto insists. “I will become Hokage, and I will find the answer Jiraiya-sensei was looking for. And when I do, I’ll change Amegakure too. I swear it on my name.”

“… I’m not sure why,” Nagato admits. “By all accounts I shouldn’t. But for some reason… I believe it.”

Nagato forms a hand seal. “So this one last time… maybe I can do the right thing. Those people I’ve hurt… it seems like the least I can do.”

Those words seem to register with Konan, who looks away from her friend and refuses to meet your eyes. So this is what she had planned, what she didn’t want you to have to share the burden of setting Nagato up to do.

With a strained, prolonged shout, Nagato pours all of his remaining chakra into the technique, so much chakra that his hair actually starts to fade, and turns white.

“What’s happening?” Naruto demands.

“The Outer Path,” Konan explains quietly. “The Rinnegan is said to exist outside the cycle of life and death, and it has command over that cycle. This is the seventh Path of Pain… the Rinne Art of Rebirth.”

“Nagato… is making one last choice.”

You are a shadow clone of Raishō Naori, and something strange is happening at the bottom of the crater left by the Deva Path. A massive spectral figure has appeared, with a gaping maw. From that maw you watch hundreds upon hundreds of glowing green streaks of energy emerge, swirling around the ruins of Konohagakure.

A scream of confusion from one of the geezer frogs clues you in on what’s happening: the one that had been impaled by Pain has sat bolt upright.

“That toad,” you stare wide-eyed in shock. “That toad was dead. Now it’s not dead. Why is it not dead anymore?”

“It seems Naruto and your real body have spoken with Pain,” a small Katsuyu pipes up from Sakura’s shoulder. “All across the village, the dead seem to be coming back to life.”

“How?” you demand. “I knew the Rinnegan was powerful, but this...”

“… Nakkun?”

… that voice. It can't be...

You are Raishō Naori, and Nagato has spent the very last of his life force on raising all of Konohagakure from the dead.

“Naruto-kun,” he begins. “Naori-han. Karin-kun. Promise me one thing… do not make the same mistakes that I did. Do not allow the world to rob you of that faith you have in humanity, in the possibility of the future. And most importantly, do not fall into the same trap that I did.”

“We love the people closest to us, so much so that their deaths become impossible for us to conceive. Do not take those people for granted. Fight to protect them, cherish their memories when they pass on, and demonstrate what they mean to you through your actions.”

“Konan...” he adds. “I’m… sorry. I took you for granted, and ended up putting the one person in this world who still cared for me through hell. I know I have no right to ask this of you...”

“I’ll watch over them,” she promises. “Rest easy.”

Nagato offers a weak smile in return.

“… thank you. I’ll be going… on ahead… to apologize... to sensei...”

Konan-sensei wraps Yahiko and Nagato in paper tags, lifting them carefully into the air.

“Yahiko’s dreams… and Nagato’s dreams… the dreams of the original Akatsuki, not what it became,” she muses. “I am entrusting those dreams to you, and to those shinobi who are close to you, who believe in you as Nagato came to.”

“Uzumaki Naruto,” she continues, producing a bouquet of flowers out of more paper. “Please accept these flowers which will never wither, as a symbol of a promise. So long as you remain true to your beliefs, Amegakure will stand at your side.”

“Karin, and Naori,” she turns to you. “You are welcome to return to Amegakure, as soon as you are ready to consider it your home once more. I… would certainly appreciate having two more shinobi of your caliber that I can rely on.”

“I’ll consider it,” Karin nods. “Things are still so… up in the air.”

“I agree,” you nod curtly. “It doesn’t feel like the time is right yet…”

You hand her a marked kunai.

“… but I’ll be by on occasion, if you’ll have me sensei.”

She nods. “Of course.”

You are Haruno Sakura, a sixteen year-old kunoichi and the disciple of Tsunade, the Fifth Hokage. As if to cap off a long day of things you couldn’t understand, now something new is happening in the bottom of the crater where your home once stood. A giant, monstrous head has exploded from the earth, its maw spread wide as green streaks of energy stream out of it to swirl above the ruins.

Then, a few at a time at first, then like a slow rain, the green streaks begin to descend… and the dead begin to rise.

At first you were ready to assume that Pain had revived them as zombies: that would be in line with how your day has gone so far. But that isn’t it. Most of them seem stunned to find themselves alive again, staring at loved ones and comrades in total confusion, many still covered in blood from the wounds that killed them.

“That toad,” Raishō Naori mutters, staring at the same sight you are with little more understanding than you for once. “That toad was dead. Now it’s not dead. Why is it not dead anymore?”

“It seems Naruto and your real body have spoken with Pain,” Katsuyu pipes up from your shoulder. “All across the village, the dead seem to be coming back to life.”

“How?” Naori demands. “I knew the Rinnegan was powerful, but this...”

“… Nakkun?”

A voice interrupts her train of though, and she freezes. That look of shock, then of dawning comprehension as she sees the Animal Path looking at her, struggling to raise herself up to her elbows.

The girl’s hair isn’t orange anymore… instead it’s like a particularly dark auburn, maybe ‘mahogany’ you’d say. And where there once were wounds left open for the black chakra receivers that controlled her, there are now only faint scars.

“… what am I...”

She doesn’t get to finish the thought before Naori gently scoops her up, pulling her into an embrace… despite being about your size, it’s no more difficult than a mother picking up and cradling a toddler.

And then she cries.

Naori is… in many ways, a monster. A girl not much older than you are, but already a master of the shinobi combat arts approaching Kakashi-sensei’s level and a Sage on top of that. A kunoichi who has revived techniques forbidden by the Second Hokage, and who as a genin created her own unique style of kenjutsu. An Uzumaki born with inhuman stamina, who in sage mode can toss around giant summoned beasts like nothing.

But when the same arms capable of all that cradle a friend she never thought she’d see alive again? When she’s crying tears of sheer joy and relief, not caring in the slightest if anyone’s watching?

You have to wonder… what are you supposed to do with the realization that even the ‘monsters’ in this world can be so human?

We know posthumus eye transplants are a thing. If she won't consent to destroying them, they have to at LEAST be sealed as well as we can possibly seal them. We've seen firsthand how they are weapons of mass destruction. We can't let that go.

About time we got a legitimate good turn.

Queen, do we have time to ask Konan for a part of Nagato? If she doesn't want to destroy the eyes, we at least need an expert on them to counteract anyone who might seek to use them against us.

I also want to see what Nagato would be capable of if he wasn't literally dying all the time, same as Itachi. Those two without their limiters would be bonkers. [/spoilers]
>>
>>4418176
“Konan-sensei,” you muse quietly. “You may not like this… but I think we need to destroy the Rinnegan. I'm sorry... I’ll do it if you need me to.”

Your sensei frowns. “Explain.”

“Tobi,” you reply bluntly. “If these eyes can be transplanted, same as any other dōjutsu, then he will come looking for them. And if they still exist, he’ll find them.”

“… you doubt my ability to protect them?” Konan asks. It probably comes across a bit more accusatory than she intended, you realize that much without her admitting it.

“I don’t think you should have to,” you reply.

“Those eyes, which were awakened in Amegakure, are a treasure and a legacy of our homeland...” she begins.

“… is what I still want to say. But that’s not right, is it?”

You nod. “Their legacy has to be the lives we live.”

“Do it,” she insists quietly. “I don’t have the heart.”

You reach down, uncovering Nagato’s face.

“Hang on,” Naruto protests. “You mean you’re really gonna do that to him!?”

“He tried to use my friend to cause more suffering,” you declare, “by making her into a Path. It'd be hypocritical of me to give Tobi the chance to do the same to him.”

You pluck the eyes from Nagato’s skull and crush them… immediately regretting doing so. The texture… it sends a shiver down your spine, and you fight the urge to visibly cringe. It… wouldn’t be appropriate.

Then you fry the remains with a surge of electricity to be sure, reducing them to crispy, burned, dried-out lumps of dust.

“Nagato’s part in this story is over,” Konan-sensei declares quietly. “Now it’s a story about your generation. Good luck.”

“I’d hate to think you’re going back to Akatsuki,” Naruto butts in. “Where will you go?”

“To bury my friends,” Konan declares. “Then, to continue running things in Amegakure. It’s still my home, and I still feel responsible for its future. That is the role that I can play now.”

“Maybe… someplace sunny.”

“So… not anywhere in our homeland?” Konan-sensei replies. “I’d bury them next to our sensei, but I think Jiraiya-sensei should be sent back here, to be buried in his home.”

“And you don’t think that Nagato should be buried in the middle of the village he destroyed,” you summarize her thinking, mostly for Naruto’s benefit.

She shakes her head. “It would be a constant reminder of their pain. I don’t think he would want that. Not after having met Naruto-kun, and having been confronted by all of you.”

“… I’ll find a place for them. Don’t worry.”

“And don’t keep it a secret,” you suggest. “Don’t give Tobi any reason to come after you.”

“You’re really concerned about that, aren’t you?”

“For sure,” you insist. “Sensei, you know as much as I do… the type of guy who manipulates people from the shadows probably doesn’t like to lose.”

After a moment, Konan nods in agreement.

“Then I’ll be going now. Take care, Naori.”

“Same to you, Konan.”

Your body feels heavy by the time you get back to the village… Karin has to help keep you moving, while Naruto collapses onto Kakashi-sensei’s back. Of course he’d come here looking, now that he’s alive again. That’s one happy reunion you’re glad to see.

Karin leads you around the crowd of villagers who end up cheering Naruto when he finally gets back to what’s left of the village, both shinobi and regular people crowding together. It seems like he’s finally gotten the recognition he’s honestly earned. Good for him… but you’d rather avoid that crowd. Not because you seriously think that they’re going to blame you for what the Deva Path did, but because you just don’t feel like being celebrated either.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“Who are you three?” Karin demands.

“We’ve been sent here to meet you,” Tenten explains. “There’s someone you should speak to.”

“Relax,” you tell Karin. “I know these three. Tenten here’s the one who fixed up my armor.”

“Which I see you’ve managed to get all scuffed up,” Tenten frowns.

“Yeah, about that… I kinda fought Pain before Naruto and Sasuke did? So maybe cut me a break?”

… it’s hard not to cry, when it’s both your own feelings and those of the shadow clone you left here merging into one tidal wave of emotion.

“You look tired,” Ajisai muses.

“I’m fine,” you insist quietly, still tearing up. “I just need a nap, that’s all.”

“I… still can’t quite believe this,” she admits. “What happened?”

“Apparently we got through to him,” you explain. “To the man who became Pain. There was still enough left of him to realize how messed up what he did to you was, so I guess this was his way of apologizing… to both of us.”

“… that’s nice,” Ajisai decides.

“Sasuke, how are you doing over there?” you ask.

“Not great,” he admits. “The eyestrain hit me hard… it’s going to take a while to recover.”

“He should be in the hospital,” Sakura observes.

Sasuke shakes his head. “No, I wanna be here when Naruto gets back. I want to hear what happened out there from him directly.”

“Sasuke,” you muse. “I have Itachi’s eyes. If you think you need them… I think he’d want you to have them.”

There’s a long pause.

“… as in, with you now?”

You nod. “Yeah, with me now.”

“… do it.”

“One thing first,” you insist. “Your mangekyō… what did you feel when you awakened them?”

“It happened when Pain destroyed the village that Itachi gave everything to protect,” Sasuke explains. “I was angry… because I felt powerless. I felt like I had failed him.”

You take out the storage scroll you carry with you, and unseal Itachi’s mangekyō from it.

“Karin,” you decide, handing the vial over to her. “Put these into Sasuke’s skull for me, would you?”

“I can do it!” Sakura protests.

“You’re low on chakra,” you insist. “Think about it objectively: Karin’s hands will be steadier and she has more chakra. It’s better for your patient if she does it… you back her up.”

You wait patiently for a little while, resting your back against a large bit of rubble with Ajisai still in your arms, while Karin takes care of the eye transplant.

“How much do you remember?” you wonder aloud. “Is it okay if I ask that?”

Ajisai takes a moment. “More than I’d prefer.”

“From when you were a Path, or when you were dead?”

“Both,” she admits. “It’s… fragmented. But I see myself… doing things.”

“As a Path?”

“Yes.”

“And nothing from the Pure Land, I’d assume?” you suggest, considering how this might work.

She shakes her head slowly. “No. It’s the only part I can’t remember at all.”

“No cheating like that, huh?” you muse. “Well, I can’t say I’m surprised, or all that disappointed. Just knowing that souls continue to exist after death is already more than most people can say. Maybe that’s enough.”

“I’m done here,” Karin declares.

“How do you feel?” you ask Sasuke.

“I can feel Itachi’s presence…” he realizes. “His will, in a certain sense, has been left behind in these eyes. I can’t explain it.”

“They work?”

You catch sight of him… the pattern in his sharingan has changed again. “They work.”

“Good,” you nod. “Let’s hope it’s a good long time before you need to use them.”

“Since when is that ever how it works?” Sasuke muses wryly. “But yeah. We can always hope.”

“Now, all three of you should really be in a hospital!” Sakura objects. “Sasuke just had a major organ transplant, that girl just came back from the dead, and I’m surprised you aren’t in a coma!”

“Sakura, you’ve worked with my cousin for years now,” you muse wearily. “I know you know we Uzumaki are lousy at holding still.”

“Yeah, but...”

“And I’ll also admit, I think it’s safer that I not try to sleep it off here.”

“Wait… what do you mean?” Rock Lee demands, having overheard your comment due to the proximity of his squad.

“Yeah, from what I can tell Naori’s one of the big damn heroes here,” Tenten agrees.

“I was actually thinking along the same lines,” Sasuke admits. “It’s not most people that are the problem.”

“I know a little about the kinjutsu techniques she apparently used against the Paths of Pain,” Might Guy explains to his students as Neji-han listens quietly. “The Edō Tensei and the Gojō Kibaku Fūda were banned by the Second Hokage because the entire fighting style violated the laws of nature, and while the Hiraishin isn’t a kinjutsu per se it’s typically been a closely-guarded secret due to its power and flexibility.”

“So the short of it is,” Neji muses, “that there may be some within our own village to whom the way she uses those techniques is irrelevant.”

Sasuke nods in agreement. “Judging how the village has historically reacted when either of our clans’ dōjutsu were at risk, it’s a real possibility.”

“I’ll be checking my mail regularly with Gaara-han and the warden at Hozuki castle,” you explain, “so that’s how your village can reach me. Until then, I’ll be resting in private.”

“You do that,” Sasuke nods politely. “I’ll send daily updates to Gaara.”

“Wait… you...” Sakura realizes.

Sasuke nods. “It wasn’t just the Uchiha compound… the entire village has been wiped clean. I want to be here to help build what takes its place.”

“So thank you for your hospitality, Naori-san,” he bows politely. “But I think I should stay here.”

After a moment, you smile. “Sure. See you later, then.”

“We’ll be back some time,” Karin shrugs. “Probably as soon as Naori’s back on her feet, if that’s okay. You seem like you could use some help.”

“I look forward to it,” Guy-sensei agrees, flashing a thumbs-up. “I’ll inform the jōnin council as soon as we have an actual meeting.”

“You ready to go then?” you ask. “Ajisai? Karin?”

Hearing no complains, you pick Ajisai up off the ground and wait for Karin to put her hand on your elbow before teleporting away.

When you wake up, it’s with a general sense of disorientation and a profound hunger. It’s also in the middle of the night, so you immediately decide that it would be best to try and fall back asleep. But you do take a few moments to figure a few things out. You can sense that Karin and Fū are in the next room, and that Yugito has laid claim to the room Sasuke had been using.

Ajisai however is in your room… and she’s making an absolutely heartbreaking sound in her sleep.

… that won’t stand.

The next morning you wake up again to find that Ajisai has left already, having slipped out to make sure you could sleep a little longer despite the obvious evidence that you already woke up in the middle of the night. You ended up holding her in your arms until she stopped whimpering and shaking, and after that you yourself fell back asleep with her hand in yours.

When you stumble into the kitchen for breakfast, it’s to much excitement and obvious relief.

“I hope I didn’t wake you,” Ajisai offers quietly.

“I did that on my own,” you admit, taking out a crate of eggs and some bacon. “How long?”

“Three days,” Karin informs you, watching you lay five strips of bacon into a pan on the stove.

“Any word from the outside world?” you ask.

“How could there be?”

“Point,” you admit, before finishing cooking the bacon before cutting it up and setting to work cracking eggs into the pan. One… two… three… seven… eight…

“You don’t have to make us breakfast,” Karin insists.

“What do you mean ‘us’?” you reply curtly, settling on a dozen eggs to scramble with finely-sliced green onions and bacon. “I haven’t eaten in three days.”

“I smell bacon!” Fū declares cheerfully, before spotting you. “You’re awake! Welcome back!”

You guard your breakfast like a predator hunching over a kill. “Mine.”

“Ah, yeah,” Fū admits. “Sorry, I almost forgot you’d be hungry.”

You toast four slices of bread, then pour a large cup of coffee before sitting down at the table and absolutely tearing into it.

“We’re going to need to shop,” Karin muses as she watches the huge quantity of food disappear.

“Well we’re not gonna get that done in Konoha,” you muse, polishing off your first cup of coffee and pouring yourself a second. “We’ll need to go pick up the letters from Sasuke in Sunagakure anyway.”

“I’ll also at least want to say hello to Ryūzetsu. We were talking together when Pain decided to launch his attack.”

>What we do beyond that depends on the news from Sasuke-kun.

“There’s a few things we can do,” you decide. “I’ll get my mail in Sunagakure, and see what they’re already doing to help in Konohagakure. Then we can have lunch in Kusagakure, and see what we can get their council of elders to offer at the same time.”

“Are you strong enough to get through that after one meal?” Yugito-han muses.

You roll your eyes. “Please, I’m...”

Your stomach growls at the worst possible moment.

“… reasonably sure.”

As it turns out, you were right. Your chakra is already strong enough to manage something as simple as teleporting yourself to Sunagakure for some mail.

“Finally awake, I see,” Gaara muses, handing you a small stack of papers. True to his word, Sasuke sent one here for each day you’ve spent unconscious. “You’ll find all the information you need there… not all of it good I’m afraid.”

“Why don’t you give me the short version?” you ask.

“Lady Tsunade has not woken up yet,” Gaara informs you. “She’s in a coma. The Fire Daimyō is pressing Konohagakure for an interim Hokage candidate.”

“Any word on the front-runners?” you ask, flipping through the letters for yourself.

“Two,” Gaara muses. “Hatake Kakashi and Shimura Danzō.”

That nasty piece of work?” you demand, before quickly remembering that Gaara has no control over what the elder council and the Daimyō decide to do. “Sorry. But that’s not good news.”

Then you flip open the most recent letter from Sasuke, and read it closely.

“Evidently Tsuna-han sent a messenger toad to retrieve Naruto fairly early in the battle,” you summarize aloud. “That toad never reached Mount Myōboku. It was found dead.”

“It sounds like someone didn’t want that message to be received,” Gaara muses. “In our village interfering with a message sent by the Kazekage is a serious crime. I’d be willing to bet it’s the same in the Leaf.”

“It sounds like something Danzō would do,” you admit, “but proving it is another question.”

“Has Sasuke mentioned it to anyone else?” Gaara asks.
>1/2
>>
>>4421669
“He doesn’t say,” you realize. “Though if he did you likely would have heard it from Kakashi-han directly. Since it seemed to be a surprise to you I’m willing to bet Kakashi doesn’t know either. And if he doesn’t know, then Sasuke has kept this to himself so far.”

“You’re probably correct,” Gaara agrees. “Furthermore, the only reason I can think of for it is that Sasuke considers it a problem if Danzō finds out that anyone suspects his involvement.”

With a curt nod you excuse yourself, leaving one final comment. “Gaara… under no circumstances should you trust Danzō. Seriously, I can’t stress that enough.”

“I’ll be cautious,” Gaara agrees. “As I hope you will be from now on.”

“Right.”

Next you teleport to Ryūzetsu’s office.

“Guess who’s fully ambulatory again,” you joke.

Ryūzetsu sighs. “I’m glad you managed to keep your promise… eventually.”

“Yeah,” you agree. “I’m glad I could too… in retrospect I’m a little surprised I got away basically unscathed.”

“Not for lack of trying from what I hear… how was it?”

“I left Akatsuki because of who Pain was,” you explain with a frown. “It’s good that we managed to stop him, but it’s even better that we managed to actually get through to him in the process. It was also good to learn that my faith in my sensei wasn’t misplaced after all.”

“I can’t imagine,” Ryūzetsu admits.

“Are you okay if I bring some folks?” you ask out of an abundance of courtesy. “I promised them a nice lunch and a chance to pick up a few things in a town, and I wanted to talk to you about some business.”

“Is that so?” she muses. “What sort of ‘business’ do you have in mind?”

“… their village is one big crater, Ryūzetsu,” you admit the grim reality. “I had no idea Pain was capable of that level of destruction… I managed to save the hospital, and the civilian shelters, but I couldn’t save their homes.”

You take a moment to recollect yourself. Those memories are about as far from pleasant as you can get… what you don’t tell Ryūzetsu is what it’s like to be able to sense all those people being killed.

“They have access to construction materials,” you continue, “and they have shinobi who can move earth and stone around. It’s mostly a question of time. But there’s probably no shelf-stable food left in the village.”

“You blame yourself for this,” Ryūzetsu asks quietly. “Don’t you?”

“To a degree,” you admit. “It’s hard not to, given how things turned out. But seriously, there’s two other things that are true, first being no one else in that whole village stopped him either. Not Kakashi-han, not any of the other jōnin, not the Hokage. From what I’m aware Danzō didn’t even lift a damn finger.”

“And the second thing?”

“No one was prepared for him to destroy the whole village,” you explain. “Not even Konan-sensei, who was the only one who knew he could do it. If I’d managed to keep the Animal Path from withdrawing, he’d have used it anyway for sure.”

“Konan-sensei could probably have survived, but with no Paths left to fight Nagato would probably have left… and Naruto-kun would never have convinced him to revive everyone he’d killed. So in the end, objectively speaking… it may not look like it, but this was the best-case scenario.”

“Well, what I know is you did what you could, as best you could,” Ryūzetsu shrugs. “Because I know that’s who you are.”

“… thanks.”

There’s a small village within sight of Hozuki castle, just nestled in a little low spot along the road leading to the entry gate. It’s the nearest settlement to the prison, so it’s one of the few places the guards working there can get to on their days off, or on long breaks.

There are a few shops of course, mostly downstairs under people’s homes. There’s also a dentist and at least one barber that you noticed. But the biggest draw are the izakayas, of which there are several… one of the larger of which Ryūzetsu takes you to. One of the tables upstairs is large enough and private enough for six people to sit and have a conversation, with Ryūzetsu sitting at the back and you sitting to her immediate right.
>1/2
>>
>>4423012
“So I’ll need to approve anything through the elder council,” Ryūzetsu admits in between bites of sushi, “but I don’t see that being a significant barrier. We are allies, after all… and the council is generally aware that if I step up on your behalf it’s probably something they should seriously consider.”

“That’s good to hear,” you nod, mulling that over for a few moments. “How do they feel about the fact that we’re not strictly professional about things?”

She shrugs. “Your guess is probably as good as mine. But if anything, they may see it as a benefit. Friendship makes the transactional side of a relationship into something that can be relied on… is something I could imagine them saying.”

“They’re not entirely wrong,” Yugito admits, sipping lightly at the sake that’s been largely corralled at your end of the table. At least for now, Karin and Fū aren’t old enough yet. “It’s maybe not the way you’d prefer them to see ‘friendship’, but at least it places some value on the concept.”

“True,” you admit, before you notice Ajisai eyeing the sake as well. “You okay over there?”

Am I old enough?” she muses, as though continuing an unheard conversation.

It’s… an interesting question. Do years she spent dead count?

“You’re not sure?” Ryūzetsu asks… you never told her about this unique situation, did you?

“It’s… a niche case,” you admit carefully.

“Hm?” Ryūzetsu frowns.

“Depending on how you count the time I spent dead I’m either seventeen or eighteen,” Ajisai lays out the reality of the situation in completely blunt terms.

Ryūzetsu gawks at your friend for a few seconds, totally unsure of what to say. “That’s… a combination of words I wasn’t expecting.”

“It’s a question of maturity,” you muse, pouring a cup and sliding it slowly in front of Ajisai. “Not of age. You’re well past the point where I trust you to decide for yourself whether you want it, or whether it’s just a crutch.”

Ajisai stares at it for a moment, before sliding the cup back towards you. “You sound older than you used to.”

“I am,” you sigh, “by about a hundred years.”

After finishing your cup, you set it aside. “That’s enough of that. Karin, have you found what we need?”

“Pretty much,” Karin nods.

“Good, good,” you muse, setting a marked kunai on the table. “I’ll be right back.”

“I heard what happened,” Natsuhi-han greets you calmly when you teleport to the Hoshikage residence. “I assume you’re here to help?”

“It would be good to show some solidarity,” you admit.

“We have a spare water pump and filtration system?” Natsuhi offers. “At very worst it should allow Konoha to move trained shinobi to other duties.”

“That’s great! Show me.”

“Of course.”

After sealing and unsealing that equipment to teleport it to a marshalling area you’ve selected, your hideout in Kusagakure, you teleport to Amegakure.

“… sensei,” you greet Konan calmly, in the rain, overlooking your homeland.

“Naori,” she replies just as calmly. “Are you rested?”

“I am,” you nod in confirmation. “Thanks for asking. I’m actually here to ask you for something.”

“And that would be for Konohagakure’s rebuilding efforts?” she guesses. “I’m listening.”

“Our village is far more industrialized,” you explain your reasoning. “Earth release can only go so far… we could give or loan them foundry equipment, dies, power hammers, cutting torches. Then they can reclaim the metal from the debris the Deva Path created.”

After considering your proposal for a few seconds, your sensei nods in agreement. “That would be highly useful, yes, and something suited to our strengths. Come back in one hour and you shall have the equipment.”

The next morning, you teleport to Sasuke… who you find already at work splitting logs into planks using chakra flow techniques.

“I can see why you do it this way,” he admits calmly. “It’s good training… good to see you back on your feet.”

“You’re working hard,” you nod appreciatively. “Good. Having a task to focus on makes things easier… speaking of tasks, where can I find Kakashi-han?”

“He’s in the crater,” Sasuke explains. “I can take you to him.”

“Please.”

Down in the crater you can see that temporary housing has already gone up, largely simplistic structures thrown together by any shinobi capable of moving and hardening earth. More complicated and even ‘finished’-looking blocks of buildings are going up more slowly: these you recognize as Yamato-han’s work by their inclusion of wooden structures bent and shaped almost organically into position.

“Ah, the third hero of Konoha returns,” Kakashi-han muses when you and Sasuke find him sitting on a wide pre-prepared foundation he’s just raised, his flak jacket off but his mask still mysteriously up. “Let me apologize in advance, because certain individuals have been hard at work revising history already.”

“I don’t care about Danzō,” you shrug. “Not worth worrying about. I brought you something… well, a series of somethings.”

“Oh?” Kakashi raises an eyebrow. “How thoughtful… I suspect.”

You unseal the stacks of food first. “Shelf-stable food from Kusagakure, courtesy of my contacts there.”

Next comes the water pump. “A water pump and filtration system, along with a drill, courtesy of the Hoshikage.”

“And, courtesy of my sensei and Amegakure,” you conclude, unsealing the mass of heavy equipment from its own scroll, basically covering the foundation behind Kakashi in a trio of foundry machines twice as tall as he is, several hot-rolling machines already set for rebar and structural I-beams, and a long rack of hammers, tongs, and cutters.

The jōnin seems stunned for a moment, as do the numerous shinobi in the immediate area who all witnessed your little show of goodwill. Then, he smiles behind his mask.

“Well, it’s good to know we have such friends.”

“We’re gonna want those foundries back though,” you admit. “Those are on indefinite loan. And you should probably give Hoshigakure its equipment back when you can too… they don’t have backups anymore.”
>2/3
>>
>>4424349
With a last offer, made directly to the handful of jōnin council members present in the crater, to provide extra hammering dies for speciality work or wire drawing dies should they become needed, you excuse yourself.

You think all that’s going to do a lot of good. After all, there’s more than one aphorism running around out there in the wild about the first step of something being the hardest: this should be a good way to directly address that, in a way that Konoha’s citizens will remember.

Maybe it’ll even be the foundation for something bigger. Who can say at this point? Like Sasuke said, the slate has been wiped clean.

You’re Fū: no last name, just “Fū”.

Being “just Fū” can be pretty awesome sometimes. Sure you may not have made a hundred friends yet, but you’ve got a handful of friends who’d probably burn down the world for you, and you’d do the same for them, and if you’re honest? One of those counts for a hundred anyway, so you figure you’re lucky.

One of those is Nakkun, who’s just a few years older than you but is like really strong. And not just when it comes to fighting: you owe your life to how dedicated she is to doing what she thinks is right. She hasn’t always been a perfect friend but she always tries, even when she gave you reason to doubt her what feels like forever ago.

Ever since then though she’s been really great, and this morning, a few days after she finally woke up again, she’s handed you a scroll.

“What’s this?” you ask curiously.

“A mission,” Nakkun tells you with a smirk. “Konan-sensei keeps getting requests for Akatsuki, and though she’s had to decline most of them she thought this one might be of some interest to us.”

“Ooh!” you grin. “What could it be!?”

You read it over and cackle with delight. “Aha! It’s guarding Fujikaze Yukie! That is so totally awesome!”

“Who’s Fujikaze Yukie?” Nakkun asks with a slight frown.

“She’s an actress,” Karin explains. “She plays the character of Princess Fūn-”

“The scene in the last movie where she uses the seven-color chakra to defeat Mao’s army of the undead!” you interrupt Karin excitedly. “It was just so… awesome!”

Nakkun seems really surprised, eventually chuckling to herself. “Okay then, I guess we’ll take the mission. Ajisai, you wanna go with her and Karin?”

“Why do I have to go?” Karin sighs.

“Team of three,” Ajisai muses. “Alright. It’s been a while since I did a mission while alive. A nice little escort mission should be a nice gentle start.”

“Would you quit phrasing it like that?” Karin grumbles. “It’s kinda weird.”

“That’s how I feel all day every day,” Ajisai points out.

“Fair point.”

“You’re coming with us, right Nakkun?” you ask.

She’s already created a shadow clone. “I’ll stay here with Yugito-han.”

“And I’ll come along to observe,” the shadow clone muses. “It might be fun to watch.”

The meet-up spot is in the north of the Land of Hot Water, right up to the coast. Unlike further south the ‘coast’ here doesn’t seem like a nice place to spend time… instead it’s kind of chilly, the shore is more rocks than sand, and there’s a stiff breeze that never seems to go away. The sky’s full of clouds too, meaning the light’s kinda dim.

“I’m Asama Sandayū,” a beardy man with little glasses greets you politely outside a little shop. “I’m Miss Fujikaze’s personal assistant.”

“And we’re here for Akatsuki,” Nakkun replies, glancing around. “But seriously… consider yourself lucky we’re here at all. The organization’s in the middle of… a re-structuring.”

“So,” you interrupt, “where is Miss Fujikaze, anyway? I’m really looking forward to meeting her!”

“She’s...” the beardy man hesitates. “You know what? Let me go in and get her quickly.”

“That’s a weird reaction,” you muse, insisting on entering what turns out to be a little izakaya. “You’re being weird about this. Stop being so weird about this, Asama-san, it’s fine! It’s fine!”

At the end of the bar you find her sitting there, staring kinda blankly at… well, at nothing in particular, drink in hand.

“Hello Fujikaze-san!” you greet her cheerfully. “I’m Fū, this is Karin and Ajisai and the scary one in back is Nakkun, we’re your escort!”

“Pleased to meet you! I’m actually a huge fan, so I’m super looking forward to this!”

Fujikaze-san turns that same flat gaze onto you, then returns to her drink. “I don’t do autographs, kid.”

“That’s fine!” you assure her. “I don’t have anything for you to sign right now anyway… so… whatcha doin’ in here? Aren’t we supposed to be goin’ somewhere?”

“I’m not going anywhere,” she insists. “I’m just going to sit in this bar until everyone else comes to their senses.”

“Okay!” you reply, sitting on the stool next to hers. “Beats standing around outside. Hey bartender, can you make me something fancy with a lemonade?”

After thinking about it for a moment, the bartender shrugs and starts muddling some mint behind the bar. Nakkun in the mean time has started talking to Asama-san.

Why are we not all onboard with this?” she asks the beardy man in her low ‘discreet’ voice. “Talk to me here.”

“Fujikaze-san… isn’t… entirely thrilled that we’re shooting in the Land of Snow.”

“Understatement of the year,” Fujikaze-san grumbles next to you.

Nakkun gives her a look… you don’t think she notices, but that’s the way Nakkun looks at people when she’s not really seeing them. That’s the way she looks at people when she’s seeing what they’re like, for lack of a better word.

“So… a kidnapping?” Ajisai wonders aloud.

“No!” Asama-san insists. “No, it’ll just take some convincing.”

“Hey, thanks!” you thank the bartender cheerfully as he sets a finished drink down in front of you. “But… what is it?”

“Watermelon and mint lemonade,” he explains politely. “Actually… making it felt kind of refreshing.”

“Nice!” you smile, before taking a sip. “It’s really good!”

Fujikaze-san glances over at you. “You’re such a little kid… you really think you’re gonna protect anything?”

“If it’s how strong we are you’ve got nothing to worry about,” you smile back at her.

“Whoa, we’ve got a hotshot over here!” Fujikaze-san chuckles. “How’d a girl like you even get to be a ninja anyway?”

“Just kinda suited me I guess,” you admit, shrugging before abruptly turning it back on her. “How’d you get into acting, Fujikaze-san?”

“I guess… I always wanted to do it,” she replies, a little surprised at the question. “Since I was a little girl.”

“What’s learning how to act like?” you press her eagerly. “When did you start?”

“I… like I said, I was little,” Fujikaze-san continues. “I took lessons for it… I think I was twelve or something?”

“So like the same age as I graduated the academy? That’s super interesting!” you admit. “I always thought it was just something you had, like a talent… but I guess Nakkun’d tell me that happens for ninja too. But what you’re really saying is it’s a mix of talent and training?”

“Well, yes,” Fujikaze-san explains awkwardly. “It’s… more like the lessons put a framework around what you already kind of know, I guess? Ways to keep calm in front of an audience, practice at keeping track of where the camera is while you’re moving around, how to control your voice. But how you understand each role, how you bring it out in little ways, make it believable… how you improvise and get creative with it… those are things that can only be coached.”

“So someone tells you if what you’re doing is working?” you muse.

“That’s right,” she confirms. “If you don’t mind me asking… you said you graduated at twelve?”

“Yup.”

“Then how old were you when you started training?” she asks you. “And what did they teach you?”

“I was eight,” you explain thoughtfully. “Think of it like this, if a sumo wrestler doesn’t know how to wrestle is just a big fat guy, right? Same with me… I was always super strong and had a ton of chakra, but the academy taught me how to throw a punch without hurting myself, and how to actually do stuff with my chakra.”

“Now I can do all sorts of amazing stuff!”

“And that older girl behind you,” Fujikaze-san frowns, leaning away from the bar to look past your shoulders. “The one talking to Asama. Who exactly is she, your teacher?”

“Hmmm...” you muse. “How do I put it…”

>She’s my friend… probably the second one I ever had after Shibuki.
>She’s like my big sister? She kinda took me in when I needed it.
>Oh, Nakkun? She’s Akatsuki… ish? That whole thing’s a mess now.
>Other?

“I guess Nakkun’s kinda like my super-reliable big sister?” you muse. “She’s kind, and smart, and hard-working, and she’s an amazing shinobi. But most importantly… she took me in when I needed her.”

Fujikaze-san chuckles to herself. “Kid, lemme give you some free advice… something that good sounds like it’s too good, and things that sound too good usually are.”

“Sorry,” you reply with a slight frown. “But you’re wrong, Fujikaze-san, and it’s sad that you think that way.”

“So!” Nakkun interrupts you before Fujikaze-san gets to counter you. “Fujikaze-han...”

“What’s up with that affected accent, anyway?” she grumbles. “Nobody actually talks like that.”

“… like I was about to say,” Nakkun continues with a now-strained smile, “I’ve worked it all out with your assistant. You’ve got a choice to make: walk off the project and probably ruin your career, or finish your job and have some faith in us to do ours.”

“No rush, you’ve got until tomorrow morning. The director’s arranged for a ship… be at the docks at ten sharp, or don’t.”

“Fū,” Nakkun continues, “I’ll be arranging for a couple of rooms to spend the night. Come find me when you’re ready, okay?”

“Kay!” you reply cheerfully.

Then Nakkun leaves to go do exactly what she said.

“Four shinobi...” Fujikaze-san mutters. “How do they think four shinobi are going to make a difference? They’re just going to get hurt over nothing.”

>Ask her why she’s so sure there’s going to be trouble. Did she do something bad in the Land of Snow?
>Tell her all about how you fought Pain’s summoned monsters when he attacked Konohagakure.
>Tell her about how Nakkun fought Pain single-handedly without getting a scratch.
>Tell her what you know about Akatsuki, and how you and the others have been fighting them.
