You are Fū, a sixteen-year-old kunoichi who used to be the jinchūriki of the Seven-Tails and who used to live in Takigakure. These days you spend most of your time with a band of misfits and mercenaries all associated with Raishō Naori, an eighteen-year-old kunoichi who used to be a member of Akatsuki and who used to live in Amegakure.

Right now everyone except for Yugito is out on a mission escorting a real-life celebrity, a movie star by the name of Fujikaze Yukie… who as it turns out isn’t exactly the funnest person around. She seems kind of sad to you, like she’s crying on the inside.

And she’s absolutely against going to the Land of Snow for some reason.

“Hey, Fujikaze-san?” you muse. “Can I ask you something?”

“Can I stop you?” she frowns. “Go ahead.”

“You seem really sure there’s gonna be trouble if you go to the Land of Snow,” you point out. “Did… something happen there?”

“It’s none of your business,” she sighs wearily. “But yeah… you could definitely say that.”

“Did you do something bad?”

“Of course not!” she snaps.

“Then it’s gonna be okay,” you insist, setting some money on the bar for your drink. “We’ll make sure nothing bad happens to you, so don’t even worry about it, okay? And don’t even worry about us, I’m sure we can handle anything that comes up!”

You add a little flex for show. “See you tomorrow, Fujikaze-san!”

The next morning comes pretty early, since Nakkun wants you to examine all of the equipment as it comes aboard the ship you’ll be taking to the north today. It’s all part of the job of course, making sure that nobody in the port town is actually going to try anything like bombing the ship, or poisoning the food or water supplies… that sort of thing.

“This one’s fine too,” you sigh, signing off on yet another crate of camera equipment with a yawn.

Nakkun’s friend Ajisai sighs, sitting on a bench next to you. “Think she’ll show?”

“Yeah,” you nod. “I’d bet on it.”

“You’d bet on it?” Ajisai muses as it gets close to the time for the ship to leave.

“She’ll be here,” you insist. “She must just be hung over.”

“What a ringing endorsement,” Ajisai shrugs.

As it turns out you were right after all. With not much time to spare, Nakkun and Fujikaze-san arrive at the docks together. While the latter still doesn’t look too happy to be here, she is here.

“You better make good, girl,” Fujikaze-san mutters as she passes.

Nakkun pats her on the shoulder. “Trust me. Everything’s under control, Fujikaze-han.”

“I thought I told you to knock that off,” Fujikaze-san grumbles.

“Yeah no… it’s the way my mother spoke,” Nakkun glares back at her, hand still on her shoulder. “So it’s the way I speak too.”

“Oh...” Fujikaze-san replies awkwardly. “I… sorry.”

“Just be more considerate,” Nakkun shrugs, finally lifting her hand. “Okay? Everyone here’s been through a lot.”

“Well,” Ajisai muses. “I guess you were right.”

“Toldja,” you smirk.

Once aboard ship, the film crew goes to work transforming the deck into a film stage on the high seas… you watch as the makeup team turns Fujikaze Yukie into the Princess Fūn, and they begin shooting a scene where Shishimaru dies.

Wait… they kill off Shishimaru in this film!?

Fujikaze-san… seems totally different. For a few moments while watching her, you almost forget the fact that Princess Fūn isn’t real.

“Shishimaru, stay with me!” she cries out, grabbing her retainer by his red outer robe.

“I’m sorry...” he gasps for air. “I’ve failed you, princess… forgive me, I beg you...”

“How can you say that?” Princess Fūn pleads with him. “Without you at our side, we never could have found the courage we needed to make it this far!”

“I only wish,” Shishimaru replies wearily, “I could’ve seen beyond the rainbow… with you… princess...”

Then he slumps to the deck.

“Shishimaru! No!” she sobs for a few seconds… before abruptly stopping. “Hold on a second, guys!”

Filming comes to an abrupt halt. “Sandayu, bring me my drops so I can cry!”

The moment is totally gone among the filming crew as they reset for the second take.

“Alright, I’ve got them going! Let’s do this!”

“I was right,” you muse quietly as the shooting resumes.

“What’s that?” Karin stage-whispers back to you.

“It only looks like she can’t cry on the outside,” you realize. “But on the inside, she’s hurting.”

“How can you tell?” Ajisai asks quietly.

“It’s hard to explain,” Karin admits, “but I don’t think she’s wrong.”

“It’s not hard to explain,” Nakkun sighs, having watched the same scene as you. “You can tell because it looks familiar.”

The next morning dawns even colder, and it’d be hard not to see why.

“That… is one big ball of ice,” Karin muses, watching over the bow of the ship.

“Think of all the snow cones you could make out of that!” you add.

“What’s a snow cone?” Ajisai asks, drawing confused stares.

“How do you not know that, Ajissan?” you demand.

She shrugs. “The rare times it snows in Amegakure you… probably wouldn’t want it anywhere near your mouth.”

“It does tend to get dirty,” Nakkun agrees.

“I wonder if we have syrup down in the...” Karin begins, only for Nakkun to unseal three bottles of colorful flavored syrup.

“Huh,” Karin muses. “Neat.”

The director loudly proclaims that whatever this is… either a tiny island covered by a big glacier or the biggest honkin’ iceberg in the world… it’s a perfect place to shoot a scene. And so the ship ties up next to the ice shelf, throwing down anchors onto the ice, and the crew starts unloading massive amounts of film equipment.

It takes a while for all the actors to get into costume, and all that time Nakkun and Karin seem to be unusually tense.

“What’s up?” you ask Karin.

“I can sense a bunch of shinobi here,” she declares.

Actually, now that she mentions it, you do sense that something is off.

“Why haven’t you mentioned it?” you ask Nakkun.

“Because they haven’t done anything,” she declares calmly and quietly. “And even if they decide to make a move… they’re no threat. So I’d rather wait and see what they do, so we can figure out who they are and what they want.”

It doesn’t take long for them to make the first move, right in the middle of the villain Mao’s monologue too. It’s a big, showy explosion that… honestly, it makes no tactical sense whatsoever.

“Kinda signalling they’re here, aren’t they?” Ajissan muses.

Nakkun shakes her head. “Not the brightest bunch, it seems.”

“Everyone get back to the ship!” she declares loudly. “Right now! We’ll handle these guys.”

“So we meet again, Princess Koyuki!” a man with light, almost icy-colored hair declares from atop a crag of ice. His outfit is bizarre, like warm padded pajamas mixed with armor.

Nearby a girl with bubblegum-pink hair and a similarly strange armor-like suit makes herself visible, and from a snowdrift a huge man with some sort of mechanical arm device pops up like a big, round daisy.

“They don’t seem that strong,” you scratch your head. “But still, Fujikaze-san! Please get back to the ship! Nakkun’s right, we’ve got this no problem!”

But Fujikaze-san seems paralyzed with fear, and isn’t budging from where she’s fallen to her knees.

“Karin, Ajissan, keep an eye on Fujikaze-san!” you decide out loud. “I’m gonna go say hi!”

You’ve spotted a potential problem, which is that the big guy who popped up out of the snow is charging you on some kind of floating board, kicking up a plume of loose snow behind him. So while Ajissan summons a giant gate to protect herself, Karin, and Fujikaze-san, you charge forward to meet him.

You’re not sure what Karin’s going to do since so far as you can tell there’s no earth underneath all this ice for her to use, but you are sure what your first move is gonna be. Instead of throwing a punch you plant your heel and let the snowboard-thing hit you… by focusing your chakra you actually bring the big guy’s attack to a screeching halt, and plant your shoulder in his chest.

All the wind goes out of his lungs, and you toss him over your shoulder, but he manages to roll to his feet.

“Wow, we’ve got a little freak here,” he grumbles, cracking his neck dramatically. “But that’s not enough to stop me!”

He throws a punch with his left fist, which is heavily armored with some kinda gauntlet, which you meet with your right fist. Your two attacks stop in the middle, and even as a bunch of steam shoots out of his gauntlet to create more force he can’t seem to overpower you.

“What the hell!?” he shouts in frustration, just before you do something he doesn’t expect.

Instead of continuing to meet his force equally you pull your fist back and step in, headbutting him in the chin and weaving a few quick hand seals.

“Hiden: Rinpungakure!” you call out, spraying a cloud of glittering scale powder straight into the big guy’s face.

Gah!?” he shouts in confusion, struggling to get the dust out of his eyes. “Where are you, you little...”

“Hiden!” you follow up with an exploding tag wrapped around a kunai handle. “Rinpun Bakusai!”

When mixed with the air, your scale powder can make a very nasty explosion, which goes off right in the big guy’s face. He basically disappears in the middle of it, giving you a good opportunity to leap back through the air and land atop Ajissan’s little gate-wall.

“How you doin’!?” you ask cheerfully.

“We’re good,” Karin smirks as her Hōō firebird flies around overhead, instantly countering some massive animal-shaped attacks made from ice and snow, weaving around and dodging the pink-haired lady whose armor has sprouted wings somehow.

“Aw, man!” you protest. “You got all the interesting ones!”

“Here he comes,” Karin declares as the strongest of the three charges the wall behind a trio of massive wolves made from ice. “Ajisai, get ready! Fū, get Fujikaze-san out of here!”
>1/2
>>
>>4430257
“Come on!” you insist, picking Fujikaze-san up off the snow and princess-carrying her back out of the blast zone. “We need to not be here.”

Behind you there’s a series of explosions, which you turn to watch just in time.

“Karin must’ve hidden Ajissan’s tags!” you realize. “Pretty good for a first time fighting together like this! And Ajissan’s using one of Nakkun’s techniques!”

“… techniques?” Fujikaze-san asks, despite being in a clear state of shock.

“Yeah!” you confirm. “Cept it looks like she’s doing it with twenty-one explosive tags. I don’t think Nakkun ever does it with less than a hundred and fifty-six.”

Between the clouds of explosions and the hail of shuriken, as well as your having taken Fujikaze-san back to where Nakkun’s watching intently, it seems that the attacking ninja lose their interest in pressing the attack.

“Let’s go,” Nakkun calls out to Karin and Ajissan. “I’ve got what we needed.”

As Karin and Ajissan fall back to the ship with you, the icy-haired jōnin grabs the big guy you fought with, who’s been standing slack-jawed in the snow since you blew him up, and all three of them turn tail.

“We could go after them,” Ajissan suggests once you’ve regrouped and the crew has hauled up the anchors.

“No need,” Nakkun shakes her head, before turning to Fujikaze-san. “So, Koyuki-hime, is there anything you’d like to say to us before I explain?”

“Princess?” you wonder aloud.

Fujikaze-san shakes her head quietly. “Not anymore.”

“This is why you didn’t want to come back here,” Ajissan realizes. “Isn’t it?”

“Very perceptive.”

“Those three serve a man named Kazahana Dōto,” Nakkun declares calmly, arms folded as she informs you all of what she learned. “Our ‘Fujikaze-han’s uncle, who staged a coup with the help of the Yukigakure ninja more than twelve years ago. They use high-tech chakra armor which serves as a chakra-absorbing barrier. It can be beaten in taijutsu or using highly-concentrated chakra to overwhelm it at a single point.”

“How did you learn this?” Asama-san asks with a frown. “Did someone tell you?”

“That big guy Fū blew up made the mistake of meeting my eyes,” Nakkun explains, “so I interrogated him using my sharingan. So I think you’ll find I know pretty much the whole situation.”

“So you should already know we can’t beat Dōto!” Fujikaze-san protests.

>>
>>4430269
“Yeah no, those three were their strongest fighters,” Nakkun counters.

Really!?” Karin stares in shock. “You’re kidding!”

“Nope,” Nakkun shakes her head. “Rōga Nadare is the guy with the bluish hair, and he’s their strongest. The pink punk lady is Kakuyoku Fubuki, and the big guy is Fuyukuma Mizore. They’re the strongest team in their village.”

“You don’t say...” Ajissan muses.

“… why are you not getting this!?” Fujikaze-san demands angrily.

>We do get it. It’s just that those guys… weren’t really intimidating? Like at all.

“Who are you really?” you ask her. “And what do you really want? Cause if you really don’t want to stand up for yourself or your country then that’s fine, but is that really okay?”

“It doesn’t matter if I’m okay with it!” she protests. “How can you all be so calm about this? How can you fight against them and not be worried in the slightest?”

“I just don’t understand it you people!”

You pause for a moment. “I grew up an orphan, and the other villagers rejected me cause I had a giant bug monster sealed inside my guts. Karin suffered even worse than I did in some ways. This time last week, Ajissan was literally dead.”

“But we didn’t give up, and good things happened,” you insist. “I can tell you’re scared, and I can tell you’re upset, but what makes me sad is that you act like you’ve totally given up on everything including yourself.”

For a moment she just sits there, letting you continue.

“So knock it off with the doom and gloom already!” you tell her. “If you want to take your country back from this Dōto jerk we’ll come with you, but it has to be your decision and you have to believe in us and in yourself!”

“… do you really think you can do it?” she eventually asks you. “The last thing I want is for more people to die on my behalf.”

“I could handle any of those three guys,” you admit. “And Nakkun could probably take out their whole village on her own, so… you know. That helps.”

“That really sounds like you’re overstating things,” Fujikaze-san admits. “Every time you say something like that.”

“She’s really not,” Karin admits. “You heard what happened in Konohagakure, right? About how one member of Akatsuki destroyed the whole village and nearly killed everyone?”

“There have been rumors,” Asama-san admits. “It’s hard to tell which of them might be true.”

“Well, Nakkun fought that guy by herself and walked away without a scratch,” you observe.

Fujikaze-san stares at her in dawning comprehension. “Wait… so you’re saying she’s that strong?”

“It’s a little unclear how strong Akatsuki was at its height,” Nakkun muses quietly as she watches the massive iceberg disappear into the distance behind your ship. “The only real reference point is that Sasori-han killed the Third Kazekage, so it’s a question of who’s stronger or weaker than he was.”

“And?” Asama-san asks hesitantly. “Which were you?”

She allows herself a little smirk. “Oh, stronger for sure.”
>1/2
>>
>>4430710
“So… I guess I should call you Koyuki-hime… or Koyuki-san… or what?” you ask awkwardly.

“Koyuki-san is fine,” she replies, just as awkwardly. “I’m no princess yet.”

“Okay,” you agree. “Koyuki-san it is then. So what’s the plan?”

“I don’t have a plan,” she admits. “I only just decided to go through with this.”

“I can have fifty samurai ready to fight at your word,” Asama-san declares.

Nakkun shakes her head. “Yeah, no, it depends on which kind of samurai. How many of your fifty can use Issen or Hadan?”

“What do you mean?” Asama-san asks.

“Then no thanks,” Nakkun counters. “It’d be better to have those fifty help after Dōto is out of the picture.”

“We’ve waited for twelve years to be of assistance!” Asama-san protests, only for Nakkun to release a curving arc of chakra from her kodachi’s blade that slices through the side rail of the ship and raises a long spray of seawater beyond it.

“That’s Issen,” she explains. “In the Land of Iron it’s considered a fundamental technique for facing shinobi… regular, unaugmented kenjutsu alone just won’t do it here.”

“You shouldn’t be in such a rush to risk your lives,” Karin agrees. “My sensing abilities confirmed what Naori is saying about the Snow ninjas… the three of us should be enough, and adding in Naori just makes it unfair.”

“The real question is still ‘what next’,” Ajissan muses.

“Use what you know about the situation to come up with a list of things that need to happen,” Nakkun suggests to Koyuki-san. “Then we can consider what we can do to find a way to make what needs to happen happen.”

>Well… we know they’ll probably come after Koyuki-san again, right? That makes them predictable.

“Well, they’re gonna come after Koyuki-san again, right?” you muse. “Can’t we turn that to our advantage?”

“It certainly does seem predictable,” Karin agrees. “How about it, Koyuki-san?”

After a moment, she nods. “You’re right… I didn’t want to think about it before, but now that they know who I am… they’re not just going to let me walk away even if I tried. Dōto needs to wipe out my father’s bloodline if his rule is going to be secure.”

“Running was never an option, was it?”

Nakkun shakes her head quietly. “Nope.”

After taking another moment, Koyuki-san nods again. “Alright, I think I owe Makino-san a performance… so that’s exactly what I’m going to do.”

“Alright!” you cheer, before pausing. “Wait… what?”

“You heard the lady!” the director declares. “Let’s get ready!”

“But sir...” one of his assistants tries to butt in.

“This is great!” the director insists to his assistant. “Whatever god watches over film is smiling on me today… what other director’s been given the chance to film with a real princess and a real team of kunoichi?”

“I know, right!” you add excitedly. “I had no idea I’d be guarding a real princess on this mission! I’m so freakin’ excited!”

“Best. Day. Ever!”

As the two of you laugh maniacally together, Nakkun brings something up with the princess in question. “And the hex-crystal?”

She stares at Nakkun in surprise. “What… do you mean?”

“That’s also part of what they’re after,” she explains. “I think you can use that to your advantage.”

“Why?” Koyuki-san muses aloud. “What could they possibly want with it?”

“The guy I ‘asked’ about it didn’t know,” Nakkun admits. “But Dōto definitely wants the crystal as much as he wants you dead… maybe more.”

“Well then,” Koyuki-san replies with a smirk. “I think that means there is something that even I can do. When the time comes just follow my lead, and trust me. I know that’s a big ask. Can you do it?”

“Sure,” Nakkun answers.

“No problem,” you add.

“Your country, your rules,” Ajissan shrugs.

“Please, Koyuki-hime,” Asama-san bows deeply. “If you insist on preventing us from fighting for you, at least carry my tantō with you.”

After frowning for a moment, Koyuki-san accepts the small blade that’s been offered to her.

“Cut that out before I change my mind about all this,” Koyuki-san insists. “There’s no need for it. You’re just making me uncomfortable.”

“Y-yes,” Asama-san bows again. “My deepest apologies.”

Filming resumes the next day, after the ship puts ashore in a small port where large vehicles with big wheels are waiting. Those wheels are designed to dig deep into the snow and ice as the whole crew follows a surprisingly flat road.

Eventually you stop for a break.

“This used to be a railway,” Asama-san explains. “If you dig down far enough you’ll probably still find the tracks.”

“This might be a good location to film some establishing shots,” the director decides. “Alright everyone, let’s get to work!”

Koyuki-san, in costume, is left without much to do until the director decides to take a series of still shots of her, standing dramatically in the blowing wind looking out over a vast, rugged terrain.

Meanwhile, Nakkun consults with Asama-san and decides to go out ahead along the rail line to check out a bridge he reported as being around the next bend.

“We’ve got trouble,” Karin declares. “Something big is coming up from behind us.”

“Something big?” Ajissan repeats. “Timing couldn’t have been much worse.”

“Shh...” you shush them both. “Was that… a whistle?”

“I didn’t hear anything,” Ajissan counters.

“No… something definitely went ‘woooo!’ over that way,” you insist.

“Why would they announce themselves like...” Karin begins, before she too hears the whistle.

“Everyone!” you shout as the ice over the train tracks Asama-san told you about begins to melt. “Get away from the tracks! Move it!”

“There’s chakra running through them!” Karin declares.

The next moment all heck breaks loose.
>2/3
>>
>>4431704
Something wide enough to cover two sets of parallel tracks barrels through the center of your little camp, crushing two of the vehicles that brought you up here. It’s a train, with several cars trailing behind a massive armored engine. Sparks fly from the massive iron wheels as it grinds to a halt.

The rear cars slide open, revealing a wall of honeycombed chambers… you realize that they’re probably weapons launchers. Probably not enough for you and your team to worry about, but also enough to absolutely murderize anyone else.

Koyuki-san, who is on the same side of the train as you are, not quite ‘backed against’ a cliff but a bit closer to it than you’re comfortable with, watches as a large man in a cloak emerges from the back of the armored engine with a loudspeaker.

“Koyuki-hime!” he addresses her, with the three snow ninjas joining him. “It’s been twelve long years… so allow me to be the first to welcome you home!”

“Uncle Dōto!” she counters. “To what do I owe this… I’m gonna call it a ‘pleasure’?”

“You have something that no longer belongs to you,” Dōto declares. “Hand over the crystal to me and no one else will have to be hurt!”

“What do you want with the hex crystal!?” Koyuki-san shouts back. “You at least owe me that much!”

“The Kazahana clan’s fortunes were sealed away with that crystal!” Dōto shouts. “I’m simply laying claim to what is rightfully mine, and with that wealth I can revitalize our nation’s industries! With our chakra armor we will have the power to rival the five great nations!”

“How could you!?” you demand loudly. “First you murder her father, and now this!? Isn’t she your family!?”

Dōto laughs loudly. “And it’s exactly because we’re family that I know her better than that… she’s a coward who ran for her life twelve years ago. All she cares about is living to see the next day. She’ll give me what I want.”

“You have no idea!” you shout back angrily. “She’s nothing like… Koyuki-san?”

Koyuki-san starts walking towards the train engine, climbing up a small ladder on the side.

“Here,” she declares, handing off a small crystal suspended from a necklace. “Take it.”

Then she turns to face you with a wry smile. “I told you once didn’t I? I’m an actress… it’s the only thing I’m good at. I may have been a princess by birth, but I’m a liar and a coward by trade.”

Dōto laughs again. “There, see!? That’s what you get for your misplaced faith… this is no fairy-tale, girl. The plucky underdog never gets to see a happy ending, because pluck doesn’t matter!”

Then Koyuki-san abruptly stabs him in the chest with the tantō she had been hiding in her wide sleeves.

“What!?”

“I told you,” Koyuki-san muses. “I’m an actress… but I’m also a princess by birth. How did you like my performance?”

“It was pretty good!” Dōto replies, grasping Koyuki-san by the neck and picking her up off the deck. “But like I told you, this is no fairy-tale, girl!”

“Koyuki-san!” you shout, taking a step forward.

“One more step and I snap her neck!” Dōto roars. “It’s different when it’s someone else’s neck on the line, isn’t it!?”

“But that’s what power gets me! It’s the strong who decide who suffer...”

Koyuki drops back down to the deck and takes a staggering step back, gasping for breath. She knocks Dōto’s arm away from her throat, and after bouncing off the deck it falls over the side of the engine to the snow.

Nakkun turns to her left, sheathing her sword as Dōto stares at his new stump.

“How...” Koyuki-san gasps.

“Remember when I touched your shoulder at the docks?” Nakkun muses. “Back when we left the Land of Hot Water? I placed the marking on your back then.”

All the way back then!? So this whole time, Nakkun had this planned out in advance!?

“No way...” Koyuki-san stares in shock. “You can’t have planned all of this!”

“Nope,” Nakkun admits. “You’re totally right. But I suspected something like this might happen… your own plan to get close to Dōto suited me just fine.”

“You stood up for your home, and for yourself… so you’ve convinced me.”

Dōto turns his fury onto Nakkun. “How dare you!?”

“Shut up,” Nakkun sighs. “A would-be villain who loses their composure so easily is just pathetic.”

>Move in. Nakkun’s not going to finish Dōto, so you’re going to do that yourself.

Using the moment of confusion to your advantage, you rush the side of the train, bite your thumb, and slam your palm against one of the weapon launchers.

“Kuchiyose: Hachiryūdan!”

After the burst of smoke, the inside of the train car is suddenly full of giant bees.

You can hear the confused, incoherent screaming progress back from that car as the bees fly between them, stinging as they go back. It’s not lethal for the poor people trapped inside, but it’s definitely not going to be pleasant either. One of them clambers out the top hatch of his car, ripping off his clothes from the waist up, screaming the whole time.

Evidently he’s convinced that his body is turning to honeycomb, and more bees are crawling out of him.

“That’s… horrifying,” you admit.

Meanwhile you can see Karin’s Hōō continuing to put in spectacular work against the ice-based attacks of the Yukigakure shinobi, and Dōto finally gets his act together enough to act.

“I’ll kill you both!” he roars in fury, drawing out a stack of exploding tags from a pouch at his waist.

He doesn’t get the chance to use them, as Nakkun pushes the tantō that Koyuki-san stabbed into Dōto’s shoulder and flows lightning-nature chakra through the hilt.

Dōto shakes and shouts with the first jolt, dropping the tags immediately before collapsing.

“I thought he was wearing chakra armor?” Koyuki-san wonders aloud.

Nakkun wraps Dōto with a whole stack of sealing tags. “Your stab found a weak point, so the tip actually penetrated. So I flowed my chakra past the armor.”

Without the pain train there to back them up, the three remaining Snow ninja go down pretty easily. The Hōō knocks the pink-haired woman from the sky and she crashes into the big guy you beat up before, and the contact between their armors seems to cause them to explode for some reason? You’re not entirely sure why and Nakkun didn’t tip you off about it so you’d suggest it came as a surprise to the two of them too.

Unfortunately for them it’s a pretty fatal surprise, as the discharge of power basically fries them inside their own armor.

That just leaves one: Nadare, who has been weaving through a minefield of sealing tags laid out by Karin and Ajissan.

You rush at Rōga Nadare, the last Snow ninja left standing, who flashes through four hand seals.

“Hyōton: Haryū Mōko!”

“Hiden: Rinpungakure!”

“Hey princess!?” you call out, setting off the scale powder and blowing the ice tiger away. “Whatcha want me to do with this one!?”

You can barely hear her response. “Just be careful! Worry about yourself, okay!?”

“Gotcha!”

Nadare starts weaving more hand seals, only to find a hail of kunai coming his way.

“You’ll have to do better than that!” he shouts. “Hyōton...”

You can tell you’re grinning as you spring your trap. “Sōshūjin!”

Spreading your arms wide you pull the chakra threads you attached to the kunai taut, changing their trajectories at the last second to plant them all around Nadare’s feet and tie him down at the same time.

Then you make the seal of confrontation in front of you, setting off the exploding tags wrapped around the handles of the kunai. But you already guessed all that would do is damage his armor.

“You seem pretty proud of that armor!” you taunt him as the smoke clears, and he finds you already up in his face. “It’d be too bad if something happened to it!”

He tries to block your hammer-blow punches with his arms, only for the gauntlet on his right wrist to crack. A right hook shatters the little yin-yang medallion on his left shoulder, and with a shoulder roll you plant an immediate left hook against the cheekpiece of his head protector.

That blow breaks the cheekpiece off entirely, cutting his cheek underneath and staggering him, letting you loop your left wrist behind his neck and pull him down to meet your knee.

Bloodied and battered, you snag hold of him and fling him high over your shoulder to crash headfirst into the ground, covered in chakra threads which you pull tight around him.

“Tah-dah!” you shout triumphantly.

“I can take these guys straight to Hozuki castle for you,” Nakkun offers to Koyuki-san as you, Karin, and Ajissan finish up tying the surviving Snow ninjas together. Honestly, all of them aside from the two that blew up when their chakra armor collided ‘survived’, though some are in pretty rough shape.

“That would be nice,” Koyuki-san agrees. “We’ll need to travel there some time for the trial though. The Land of Snow doesn’t allow for trials in absentia.”

“What about Yukigakure itself?” you muse. “I mean, how many of them supported the coup twelve years ago?”

“It’s not entirely clear,” Asama-san admits. “We’ll still need to be careful, but at the same time a shinobi village relies on its daimyō for funding. So my expectation is that most of them will be loyal to whoever controls the purse-strings.”

“The only thing I’m still curious about is what they wanted the crystal for,” Nakkun wonders aloud. “I’ll be back in a bit… if you don’t mind, Koyuki-han, could you humor me after that?”

“After you saved my life it’s the least I could do,” Koyuki-san agrees. “Besides, Makino-san still needs an ending for his movie, and that seems like the ideal.”

“Perfect!” the director agrees enthusiastically. “You there, go with the scary kunoichi. I want some shots of the antagonists in lockup!”

Rolling her eyes, Nakkun quickly teleports herself, Dōto, Nadare, twenty Snow ninja, and three cameramen to Kusagakure.

“How does she do that?” Koyuki-san muses.

You shrug. “Even if I asked I probably wouldn’t understand the answer.”

“Fair point.”

After Nakkun and the cameramen return, it’s a long drive to where Nakkun identified a ‘vault’ from interrogating Dōto with her sharingan. It’s an open snowfield with six towering, sheer-faced pillars surrounding it. In the center is a stone platform, which may as well have a neon sign with the words ‘KEY GOES HERE’ on it.

“Well, this is it,” Koyuki-san signs dramatically once the film crew has had time to set up. “Time to see what this was all about.”

She dusts the snow off the top of the platform, and slides a purple crystal into it.

The whole snowfield starts to glow, lighting up from underneath in an expanding pattern like a snowflake… and the ice and snow begin to melt. Instead the whole valley lights up as the six towers begin to glow and shine, and the snowfield is replaced by a field of grasses and flowers.

“This is...” Koyuki-san looks around her as the landscape is transformed. “A heat generator? No… something more than that… it’s spring.”

You can see that for the first time since you met her, Koyuki-san is crying. But she isn’t just crying, she’s smiling at the same time, and not just for the cameras. Though they have a clear shot of her face you get the feeling she’s forgotten that they’re even there.

“This was my father’s dream.”

You are Raishō Naori, a shinobi loyal to things greater than villages or organizations.

It’s very early in the morning… everyone else is still asleep. Fū’s sprawled diagonally across her futon with her tummy out again, so you pull the covers back over her. In the nearby alcove you added to the room specifically for her own keepsakes you spy the picture from your recent mission in the Land of Snow: the four of you who went are standing with Princess Kazahana Koyuki in her full costume, smiling warmly for the camera in the middle of a field of flowers ringed with icy mountains and snow. Everyone looks so happy… and contrary to what she once said as Fujikaze Yukie, the princess even autographed it for Fū, with her thanks and best wishes.

You can’t help but smile when you see it.

“Sensei,” you greet Konan-sensei with a yawn a few moments later, having moved effortlessly to her office in Amegakure. “What’s the big deal calling me out here so early?”

“I arranged for breakfast,” she offers politely, gesturing to a nearby meeting table where a familiar ‘face’ is waiting.

“Hatake Kakashi-han?” you muse. “Well that’s a surprise. To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“I’ve been sent here to meet with your former sensei,” he explains calmly. “Though I gather this isn’t the first time?”

“You’d be correct,” Konan-han admits. “Though this is our first time meeting with my real appearance. My name is Konan, and for the time I am the leader of Amegakure.”

“I am Hatake Kakashi,” Kakashi-han introduces himself. “Here on behalf of the jōnin council of Konohagakure… among other interested parties.”

“May we have your reasons for being here?” Konan enquires.

“You may,” Kakashi replies as you take a seat and start nibbling at some of the little snacks Konan had prepared for you. “The Kazekage has called for a Summit of the Five Kages, to be hosted by Mifune of the Land of Iron. Currently the Mizukage, Raikage, and Tsuchikage have confirmed their attendance, and our own interim Hokage Shimura Danzō has reluctantly admitted that he now cannot refuse.”

“Sounds like something Gaara and I’ve been pushing for months now,” you admit. “The attacks on Konoha and Killer B finally shook things loose?”

“It seems that way,” Kakashi agrees. “However that’s not the reason I’m here. Mifune-dono has specifically requested a representative of the smaller shinobi nations be present.”

“I advanced your name as a candidate,” Konan-sensei informs you.

You puzzle over this for a few moments. “Officially, you can expect official support for that from Kusagakure, Yukigakure, Hoshigakure, Sunagakure, and Kirigakure, and you’ll most likely get it from Takigakure and Iwagakure. The daimyō of This and That and the Queen of Rōran would also support it unequivocally. I think Mifune-tono will as well.”

“In spite of Danzō’s opposition,” Kakashi-han adds, “you’ll have the approval of the jōnin council of Konohagakure as well. We have no idea what the Raikage will say.”

“He’ll probably want to speak with me anyway,” you admit. “And by speak with I mean shout at. As for Danzō, why is he the interim Hokage when you exist, Kakashi-han?”

“For the same reason that Lord Third became interim Hokage after Lord Fourth was killed,” Kakashi explains. “When a Hokage is killed or incapacitated the precedent has become to fall back to a previous Hokage or Hokage candidate.”

“There were no alternatives?” Karin-sensei asks with a frown.

“The only others would have been Jiraiya-sensei, who turned the position down before Tsunade-dono accepted, and Orochimaru, who was considered alongside Minato-sensei.”

“Even dead, Minato-han would be a better choice,” you grumble.

What you decide against saying is that you could actually make that happen… you’re just not sure about the precise mechanics involved with using senjutsu to cheat the Shinigami the same way you used it to cheat the typical requirements of the Edo Tensei.

“Perhaps so,” Kakashi-han concedes. “But that’s not an option. Right now the only option is Danzō, which obliges us to find ways to deal with the fact.”

“Did Naruto ever tell you what I told him?” you ask.

“He hinted at some connection between Danzō and Akatsuki,” Kakashi explains. “But he also seemed convinced that he couldn’t tell me everything.”

“Danzō is partly responsible for Akatsuki taking the path it ended up taking,” Konan explains curtly. “His interference in Amegakure’s affairs prolonged our civil war by years and cost thousands of lives.”

“He is less than ideal,” Kakashi-han agrees. “But unfortunately our hands are bound to a certain point.”

“I understand that,” Konan admits. “But I felt you should know the truth.”

Kakashi-han nods quietly. “I suppose this is just a reminder of how much all of our villages have to apologize for.”

Konan-sensei shakes her head. “Though an apology would be appreciated… more important is that all concerned learn from their mistakes and continue to grow. That was Nagato’s failing, and it certainly sounds like it’s one of Danzō’s.”

“Though it doesn’t seem to be a failing shared by our star pupils,” Kakashi-han muses thoughtfully. “That much is a good thing, I think.”

“You must be proud of Naruto-kun,” Konan sighs. “He’s developing into a fine young man.”

“You never would have thought it a few years ago,” Kakashi chuckles. “He was the village’s biggest knucklehead ninja, always getting himself into trouble just to get himself noticed. And now he’s considered a hero.”
>1/2
>>
>>4434678
“Naori was always a promising student,” Konan shrugs. “In a sense I suppose I had an easier time. Still, I am very proud of who she has chosen to be.”

“Our jōnin council knows what she did for us,” Kakashi-han frowns behind his mask, before glancing at you, “though Danzō has been quick to publicly minimize your role in defeating Pain. Otherwise you would be considered a ‘hero of Konoha’ as well.”

“That’s fine,” you shrug. “The people who count know… including Danzō. My real concern is that he must know that his newfound authority only lasts so long as Tsuna-han is in a coma. He’ll be looking to legitimate himself even if he has to resort to illegitimate means to do so.”

“That’s a concern for us as well,” Kakashi admits. “However, your main concern should be the Summit. You’ll be allowed two bodyguards as your retinue, so think carefully about who you want to come along in that role.”

Karin for sure. With a bunch of high-profile shady people all in one room bringing her ‘Kagura Shingan’ to the table is an absolute no-brainer. You’d be willing to bet each of the five Kages will bring someone like her, only not as good as her. The only question remaining is whether you want to bring a shadow clone of Yugito-han, leaving the real Fū and Yugito together at your hideout, or whether you want to bring a shadow clone of Fū.

You guess it’s just going to come down to how likely you think it is that seeing Yugito-han will send the Raikage off the deep end. A decision for later.

“Then I suggest we send out letters regarding this decision,” you muse, “if you haven’t already. I agree to accept the responsibility.”

“Will you be okay, Kakashi-san?” Konan-sensei asks politely. “I have to assume Danzō must be aware that you have left the village.”

“The official story is that I’m here to thank you for the machinery you lent our village,” Kakashi replies with a smirk. “Which is true of course, it’s been very helpful.”

“Do you believe he’s been fooled?”

“Not for a minute.”

Konan-sensei shakes her head. “Okay then. I’ll handle the messenger hawks on our end. You just be sure not to arouse any further suspicion.”

“Thank you for your hospitality,” Kakashi-han bows politely before turning to leave. “And you, Naori-san… good luck with the Kages.”

“Thanks,” you grumble. “I’m hoping I won’t need it, but I won’t turn it down either.”

“I can get some instant feedback,” you suggest. “Ask for comments from some of the people I know in the villages and nations in question. And Kakashi-han?”

“What is it?”

“Make sure Tsunade-tono is kept safe,” you ask him. “Please.”

After a moment, he nods. “Yeah. We’ll be sure to.”

“Natsuhi-han?”

“Good morning, Naori-san,” the red-haired Hoshi jōnin greets you behind her desk. “You’re here early.”

“Things are escalating,” you admit. “There’s going to be a Summit of the Five Kages soon and I’ve been asked to represent the smaller villages and nations. Is that fine with you?”

“Certainly,” she nods. “It’s hard to think of a candidate with a higher international profile.”

“For better or worse,” you admit. “Would you be willing to write a short message in favor? I can be by at the end of the day for it.”

“Not a problem,” she replies calmly. “Our village owes you its future after all. It seems the least we can do to put our faith in you.”

“Tayuya isn’t awake?” you realize.

Natsuhi shakes her head. “No, unless she has a mission or a job she’s rarely up much before noon.”

“Too bad,” you frown. “Tell her I said hi, okay?”

“Queen Sāra,” you bow politely.

“Naori!” the queen of Rōran rises from her seat and hugs you. “What a pleasant surprise!”

“I have no reason not to be,” she admits. “And several reasons to agree. But why ask?”

“The Raikage and interim Hokage won’t be too happy about it,” you explain. “So if I can put it beyond any question that I have significant backing in the role, it might shut them up.”

“I see,” Koyuki-han muses. “I wish politics were that simple for a head of state.”

“You don’t wanna be that kind of daimyō,” you shake your head.

“No,” she agrees, “you’re right about that. I’ll have something ready for you after lunch.”

“Thank you.”

“Of course. Our nation owes you at least that much.”

“Gaara.”

“Naori.”

“I’ll be representing the smaller hidden villages,” you explain. “I’d like you to write a note of support to keep the Raikage and Danzō off my back when the time comes.”

“That won’t be a problem. Will you be asking any of the other Kages?”

You nod curtly. “Probably Terumi Mei and old Ōnoki the Fence-Sitter.”

“You can tell them you have my support,” Gaara insists. “That may make things easier.”

“I’ll be representing the small villages at the Kage Summit. Gaara already backs me, but I’d like an official letter from you as well if you’re willing.”

“I doubt we’ll find a better candidate for the job,” she admits through the door. “I’ll start on in once I’m dressed.”

“Sorry for the interruption.”

“I’m not bothered by it,” she admits, before adding something under her breath. “Though it’d be nice if a cute young man...”

“What was that?”

“Nothing.”

The last matter… is the matter of Ōnoki and Iwagakure. You could call Kurotsuchi to your neutral ground in the Land of Grass, or ask her to meet you at the border… but both of those things would take some time to handle. Would it be better to send a personal message requesting a meeting with a hiraishin tag in the envelope, and spend the interim time planning things out with your own faction back at the hideout?

>Head for the border of Iwagakure. You can get there fastest from Takigakure.

You decide that the better use of your time is to return to your hideout and write a pair of letters over breakfast, to send to Iwagakure. So you do so, with the first letter being a matter-of-fact introduction to the situation for the Tsuchikage’s benefit, and a request for a meeting. This you mark with a hiraishin formula, with instructions to simply destroy the letter in the event of a refusal to meet. The second letter is a brief, more personal note for Kurotsuchi.

>Kurotsuchi,
>I know it’s been a while since my last letter, and I can only hope that my contacting you like this won’t be a problem.
>How have you been since the summit? I can only hope your life has at least been less eventful than mine lately.
>You may not know yet but we’ll probably see each other again at the Kage Summit.
>Mifune-han and Gaara-tono wanted a representative of the smaller villages and nations, and my name’s the only one under serious consideration.
>I’m asking your grandfather for a meeting because it would be nice to have the acknowledgement of three of the Kages beforehand.
>But in any event the smaller nations seem to mostly agree with my appointment.
>Here’s hoping this ends well.
>Naori

“Kuchiyose: Kijani!”

You summon your scroll-bearing compatriot, handing him the two letters. “I need you to get these to Kamizuru Kurotsuchi, in Iwagakure. Can you do that?”

“It shouldn’t be a problem, Lady Naori,” he replies, taking the scrolls in one talon.

“I’d prefer it if you sent one of the smaller shrikes,” you continue. “Avoid exposing yourself. Okay?”

“I can do it that way if you truly find it necessary,” Kijani-han agrees.

“Thank you, Kijani-han,” you bow politely. “Then please see to it.”

“So what was all that about?” Karin asks you a few minutes later.

“We’re going on a bit of a trip,” you explain. “The five Kages are going to be convening in the Land of Iron, and you’re coming with me.”

“I am?” Karin asks curiously. “Since when?”

“Yeah no, all the Kages will be bringing sensors,” you tell her. “So why not just bring a better sensor?”

“So the remaining question is whether seeing a clone of Yugito-han would be a good thing for the Raikage,” you muse, “or a bad thing. That’s absolutely gonna decide who gets to send their shadow clone along.”

“I think it would be positive,” Yugito-han guesses.

“Then your clone, Karin, and I will go,” you decide. “I’m only allowed two attendants, so Fū, the real Yugito, and one of my own shadow clones will remain here.”

“Aw,” Fū pouts. “I don’t get to go?”

“Sorry,” you shake your head. “Not this time. But your job here’s just as important.”

“… ‘kay.”

Over the rest of the day you collect the letters you requested one by one… many are surprisingly glowing. Rōran credits you with guarding the Ryūmyaku and protecting their kingdom. The Land of Snow credits you for saving their new daimyō and setting them on a path to reform. The Kazekage credits you with saving his life. Kusagakure credits you with preventing the “Grass Fruit” faction from deploying the Box of Paradise, and for rooting out corruption in Hozuki Castle’s administration. Hoshigakure credits you with stopping the previous Hoshikage and saving all of the village’s children from agonizing deaths.

Eventually, late that evening, you get a signal from Iwagakure.

You sense that there are no nasty surprises waiting for you immediately after arrival at the marking in Iwagakure… it’s in a room, and it seems that Kurotsuchi is the only one in the room with it. So you look at it from the perspective of the amount of time it would take you to enter sage mode were you to find an ambush waiting for you elsewhere in the village, versus the potential trouble it might cause were you to appear in sage mode as though ready to attack.

Eventually you decide that there are very few people who could even force you into sage mode in the first place, and that the odds of needing sage mode are lower than the odds that arriving in it will cause the sort of trouble you’re trying to avoid.

You do, however, travel with your armor and with Umekiri at your hip. You may be going for a show of trust, but you’re not going to invite trouble.

“Naori,” Kurotsuchi greets you with a frown.

“Kurotsuchi-han,” you incline your head politely. “Where are we?”

“It’s a standby station,” she explains. “I take it every village has someplace like this… I cleared ours out for the purpose.”

“… why?”

“Well,” she glances to the side, at the rest of the empty room, “I know you like to set up places to teleport to that are out of the way, so I figured it might be more… comfortable, or something?”

“You’re not entirely wrong,” you admit.

As luck would have it, this ‘ready room’ stands very close to the center of Iwagakure, and can access the combined Tsuchikage residence and academy building by just a single narrow bridge. So you’re soon outside old Ōnoki’s office when Kurotsuchi motions for you to stop.

“I don’t know how the old man’s going to greet you,” she admits. “So… yeah. Just be on your toes, ‘kay?”

“You’re not going in?” you enquire.

“No,” she shakes her head. “Remember to have fun in there.”

You roll your eyes at her and step into Ōnoki’s office.

“So you came after all,” he muses behind his desk. Scanning the room, you see that he has the only chair in it… it seems he expects you to stand. “The last time we saw each other face to face was years ago… you’ve grown.”

“That’s what people my age do,” you frown, standing patiently across the desk from him.

“You’ve also decided to don armor,” he observes. “I haven’t seen that since I was a brat!”

“My kenjutsu style is based on samurai koryū,” you explain. “When I was fighting Pain I barely noticed it.”

“People your age should have more confidence in their abilities than to need armor,” Ōnoki quips.

“People my age won’t throw their backs out,” you counter, “from taking the extra precaution. But seriously, there’s going to be a time and place for criticisms if you’ve got them. That’s not what we’re here for.”

“You sound confidence.”

“No yeah, I’m here looking for support,” you clarify. “Not permission. I’ve already got the blessings of Ame, Taki, Kusa, Hoshi, and Yuki, along with several daimyō from non-shinobi nations. You’d be hard-pressed to find enough opposition for it to matter.”

“Why come here looking for support?” Ōnoki demands. “Let’s hear your reasoning.”

“Because Gaara-han and Terumi-han have already agreed,” you explain, “leaving me one short of a majority of the Kages. I can’t count on the Raikage, and the interim Hokage’s the problem so far as I’m concerned.”

“Shimura Danzō,” Ōnoki muses. “The worst Konohagakure has to offer.”

“No kidding,” you shake your head. “He’ll be seeking to legitimate himself, you know.”

“You’re saying you’re willing to undermine him?”

“My being there undermines him,” you admit. “I know too many of his dirty secrets for comfort.”

“So what exactly are you proposing?” the Tsuchikage asks.

>You get nothing from this aside from the pleasure of seeing me unload on Danzō.

“For real, your village hired Akatsuki the most often,” you smirk, “and so that means you have the most to answer for, so far as the other Kages are concerned. I already know I’ll have to answer for my previous associations, and when I do that it will deflect some of the attention away from you."

“So like it or not, we’re in this together.”

Ōnoki chews on that thought for a few moments before he admits defeat. “I see what you mean. I also understand from what my granddaughter says that you’re an extraordinarily reliable young woman, so I’m willing to believe you really think that your presence will lead to a more successful outcome to this summit.”

“Good to know Kurotsuchi-han does have my back,” you muse.

“She can be stubborn about such things,” the Tsuchikage muses. “A common characteristic of shinobi from our village. But on the other hand, don’t expect me to just go along with what the Kazekage and the Mizukage decide to say either. If they want the cooperation of the Kages they’ll have to define what 'success' looks like, then they'll have to earn it.”

“That’s the whole reason Gaara-han called the meeting in the first place,” you reply calmly. “I have faith in him.”

“So...” Kurotsuchi muses after the meeting has concluded, and you have a notice from the Tsuchikage supporting your participation in the Kage Summit. “We don’t… like… ever do stuff, you know?”

“Not really,” you agree. “Do you… want to do something together? Like dinner maybe?”

“I guess it’d be nice?” she admits awkwardly. “I mean every time we meet it seems that you’re the one treating me. It just feels uneven, you know? Like I’m being a lousy friend.”

“Well, if it really bothers you,” you muse, “I suppose I could let you treat me.”

“Cool,” she replies. “I know a place. Real traditional… my guess is you’d like that better than something you can get anywhere?”

“May as well,” you agree. “Lead the way.”

Your first foray into the local cuisine in Iwagakure is an exciting one. At the center of a round silver tray placed at the center of your table is a pinwheel-shaped loaf of steamed bread, made from barley flour, and around it are dishes to go with it, portioned for two. One is a soup made with spiced lentils, the second is a dish full of barley-flour dumplings filled with curried meat and potato, and the third is roasted cauliflower with peppers and spices. The dessert comes out with it in its own dish, full of candied fruits.

“What’s the meat in these?” you ask curiously.

“Buffalo,” Kurotsuchi-han informs you.

“What’d you and Ōnoki talk about?” she wonders. “And don’t tell me it’s ‘classified’ or something like that. Gimme some details!”

“It wasn’t much,” you shrug. “I just pointed out quite correctly that he hired Akatsuki the most over the years, and that my being a former Akatsuki will split some of the scrutiny he’d normally face over it.”

“That’d do it,” Kurotsuchi-han nods curtly. “Anything else? Come on, spill it already!”

“There was a fair bit of banter over my armor,” you muse. “The only other topic that really came up was the interim Hokage...”

“That Danzō guy?” Kurotsuchi-han presses. “You know something about him?”

“I know a lot of things about him,” you smirk. “But I guess what’s most relevant is that he believes his own hype so much that in his head self-aggrandizement and the village’s interest are one and the same.”

“So he’s one of those,” Kurotsuchi rolls her eyes. “Got it.”

“There’s a lot more I could say,” you admit, “but it’s really not my place to say it.”

“Well, least now we know the kinda guy we’re dealing with,” Kurotsuchi-han muses. “Isn’t that a problem for you? One that you could… you know. Solve yourself?”

“Yeah no, I could probably make him disappear,” you admit. “But would that really make things better?”

“Probably?” Kurotsuchi-han insists. “I mean it sounds like his replacement couldn’t be worse?”

“True,” you agree. “But at the same time it’d probably cause chaos for one of my larger, more reliable allies. And if the Kage Summit goes well, they’re going to be your allies too, at least for a little while.”

“So it’s best to keep them at full strength even if it means they’re being led by an asshole?”

>That’s right. Because as soon as Tsunade-han wakes up from her coma, Danzō’s toast.

“Leave it to me,” you shake your head. “It’s literally just the Fire Daimyō and a couple of their elders backing him, he doesn’t even have the loyalty of his own jōnin council. All I have to do is undercut him hard enough that he can’t solidify his position.”

“No one has to dirty their hands over the likes of him.”

That being said, there are two people you could talk to in order to get the full story… unfortunately both Senju Tobirama and Sarutobi Hiruzen are not only dead, but from what you understand both were likely sealed inside the Shinigami during the Third Hokage’s battle against Orochimaru. At least, that’s the rumor based on the observations of a few Konoha ANBU nearby.

Come to think of it, the style of barrier that you saw keeping the ANBU out was the sort that’s usually maintained as a cooperation ninjutsu, and you know that Orochimaru had the Sound Four at his disposal during the invasion attempt. And you also know that one of those four is still alive… the only living person who might know exactly what happened inside that barrier.

So maybe… just maybe… talking with Tayuya might give you a clearer understanding of whether or not bringing back one or more of the previous Hokages is possible, and if so whether it might be worth doing. At least, perhaps for the purpose of freeing their souls and ensuring that no one else can summon them to use for nefarious purposes.

“You still with me in there?” Kurotsuchi-han wonders.

You suddenly snap back to reality. “Hey, sorry. I was just mulling something over.”

“Can you talk about it?” she rolls her eyes.

You shake your head. “Yeah no… that’s a hard no.”

“Well, good luck with whatever it is,” she shrugs. “You gonna eat that fruit?”

After finishing your meal with Kurotsuchi-han, and enjoying a bit more chatter before you have to go about your business, you collect the last of the letters you were looking for and pass them off to Konan-sensei. She’ll hold onto them for now, collating them into a single file that you’ll take with you when the time comes.

But now you have a serious question… do you want to try to pursue the outstanding issue of the Hokages’ souls?

>Confirm it with Tayuya. If you can do it safely, freeing their souls would be worth it.

You decide that if there are three souls trapped inside the Shinigami, and you can free them safely, it would be worthwhile to do so even if you got nothing out of it but the practice and experience. If things really work in your favor, it may also be possible to get some useful information in the process.

“Tayuya,” you greet the former Oto-nin quietly.

“This is rare,” she frowns at you. “Usually you don’t come and find me… it’s more like you make time when you’re here to butt in.”

“I realized you could help me with something,” you admit. “Can we talk in private?”

Tayuya leads you to her small apartment building… six small flats on two floors right on the edge of the clearing the village sits in, connected by an outdoor stairway and a covered walkway on the facade. The kitchen and sitting room probably isn’t much more than fifteen square meters, with a bedroom down a short hallway that’s probably about ten square meters, across the hall from a toilet room and a shower room.

She hits the lever on an electric kettle. “Herbal okay?”

You nod, taking a seat on a cushion at the low table. “That’s better, actually.”

“My own damn brain tends to keep me up,” Tayuya admits, getting out two cups, a tea ball, and a small saucer. “Doesn’t need the extra help.”

“I get the feeling,” you admit. “Are you… okay?”

“Yeah,” Tayuya sighs. “It’s just not as easy to… well, adjust… as I thought it’d be. It’s frustrating as hell.”

“You were what, fourteen when we met?”

She nods curtly. “Sucks hard, doesn’t it?”

“Yeah,” you agree as she sets the two cups down on the table. “Sorry, no coasters.”

“Your house,” you shrug. “Curse mark bothering you at all?”

“Only cause I can’t fall back on it,” she admits. “Pisses me off pretty good… I used to shittalk people all the time and now I get to feel like trash.”

“Is that why you’ve been working out?”

She allows herself a little smirk. “Hey, figured I couldn’t get away with those noodle-arms anymore. Not having a crutch and all.”

“So, what’s this really about?”
>1/2
>>
>>4441203
“I need you to answer two simple yes or no questions,” you admit. “And seriously, I need you to never tell anyone what I asked you, or what your answers were. Can you agree to that?”

“Sure,” she shrugs. “Fire away.”

“Did Orochimaru land the killing blow against the Third Hokage?” you ask bluntly. “On the day of the invasion attempt?”

“Come to think of it...” Tayuya frowns. “No.”

“You’re sure?” you press. “Tayuya-han, I need you to be sure.”

She shakes her head. “No. Now that you mention it, the way their battle ended seems really weird. They were just… kinda standing there like morons.”

“And the second question,” you continue. “Did Orochimaru use the reanimation jutsu in that battle?”

Tayuya nods. “Yeah, I remember he tried to summon three dead old geezers, but only two of them worked.”

“That’s more than I needed to know,” you admit, “but the extra context will really help.”

“Hang on,” she frowns. “What the hell are you...”

“Don’t ask,” you interrupt. “Seriously, I don’t wanna have to lie to you, Tayuya-han.”

“Anything I can get you as a thank-you gift?” you ask her when you’re finally ready to go.

She shakes her head. “Not unless you can get me a house, no. I’m good.”

“I’ll see what I can do,” you shrug. “Thank you for the chat, and for the tea.”

“Sure,” she smiles. “Stop by whenever.”

So you’re actually going to do this. You figure the best way to do this is to mimic your solution to ‘sanitizing’ the reanimation technique by using senjutsu, only adding a step of putting the mask on the artificial ‘sacrifice’ and controlling it to perform a series of hand seals.

>Try to summon the Shinigami using a senjutsu ‘proxy’ body, and be ready to perform the Tensa Jōdo Tensei immediately.

You decide to try your best to get a two-for-one out of this, and head to the Land of Grass hideout to begin. First you enter sage mode and reinforce the barrier ninjutsu you have in place here, before creating a body using senjutsu flow. In theory it works the same way that you would do it for the Tensa Jōdo Tensei technique. But this time you create it without a head, and unseal Hidan’s head from its scroll.

“The fuck is going on now!?” he demands. “Where are we? When are we? Why’re you wearing armor?”

“Shut up,” you grumble, attaching Hidan’s head to the immobile false body.

“What’re you doing?” he demands. “Why’re you sticking me on a statue?”

“You’ll find out in a moment,” you tell him, placing the Shinigami mask over his face. “Seriously, just shut up for a moment.”

After several seconds you watch as the body straightens out into a T-pose, and a gaunt, spectral being manifests above and behind it with a tantō in hand. At your direction it slits its belly open, slitting the sacrificial body open in the same spot amid a lot of howling from Hidan behind the mask.

Five blue orbs of flickering energy emerge from the Shinigami, four of which float in the air between you and the Hidan-puppet. The fifth seems to quiver, before dissipating entirely.

Now you take the second step, manifesting four more false senjutsu-bodies into which the orbs stream into.

“Kuchiyose: Tensa Jōdo Tensei!”

Dust and debris swirls as the familiar summoning markings spread across the floor of the hideout, and coalesce around the four bodies, gradually becoming recognizable… or at least two of them are. One becomes the visage of the Fourth Hokage, Namikaze Minato-han. The second becomes the Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen, wearing the same combat uniform in which you understand he was killed. The other two wear the old-style shinobi battle armor: one with sharp tattooed markings on his chin and cheeks, silvery hair, and blue armor with a fur collar. The other with tanned skin, long black hair, and red armor… this last of the four feels different. You can feel exceptional raw power radiating from him, though his face is totally calm.

“What the shit!?” Hidan shouts.

You step past the confused Hokages, pulling off the Shinigami mask and separating Hidan’s head with a chop of your hand.

“What the fuck was that supposed to be!?” Hidan protests loudly. “For fuck’s sake do you even know what you’re doing!? Were you trying to feed me to that thing!?”

“I didn’t know if it was going to take your soul,” you admit, taking out the sealing scroll, “but I’d certainly hoped.”

“You’re fucking with stuff that you have no way of understanding!” he insists.

“I know,” you reply, preparing to seal the head away again. “This is how I learn.”

...

“I have seen some strange things,” the man in the red armor muses, “and that was certainly one of them.”

“Sorry,” you apologize with a shrug. “I was hoping the Shinigami would take the soul of that mass-murdering immortal cultist off my hands, but no such luck I guess.”

“Hang on...” Hiruzen-tono muses. “I know your face… Naori-kun, wasn’t it?”

“That’s me,” you reply. “It’s been a while, Lord Third… and to answer the obvious question no, I’m not with Orochimaru.”

“Is that so?” he wonders. “So you figured out how to undo the Shiki Fūjin, then reanimated us into these bodies?”

“Yeah no, with senjutsu it’s almost trivial,” you admit. “Welcome back to the world of the living.”

“You know this girl, Hiruzen?” the man in the blue armor enquires. “She appears to be of Mito’s clan… and bold, to summon us without any sort of binding.”

“I’m afraid I don’t know two of you,” you admit. “Maybe we could do with a round of introductions?”

“Well, I guess I’m the ‘First’ Hokage,” the man in red begins. “Senju Hashirama is my name.”

“Senju Tobirama,” the man in blue continues. “I was the Second… Hiruzen it seems you know already, but one of us is unfamiliar to me.”

“Oh,” Minato-han realizes, turning to show off the back of his coat. “The Fourth Hokage, sir, Namikaze Minato.”

“Ah, so there was a fourth!” Hashirama muses happily. “That’s good news, it seems the village was stable for at least that long. How are things?”

“I actually don’t know, Lord First,” Minato-han admits. “I died and was sealed before Lord Third was.”

“Unrelated to when that stripling Orochimaru summoned us?” Tobirama-tono presses.

“Yes sir, a completely different incident.”
>2/3
>>
>>4441347
“Now then,” Tobirama-tono turns his attention back to you. “The obvious question is why.”

“If you knew one of your ancestors was unable to move on to the Pure Land,” you muse, “wouldn’t you want to do something about it… grandpa Tobirama?”

He stares at you for a moment before it seems to dawn on him. “Is that so? Well… I suppose it’s harder to hold a grudge against your own grandchildren.”

“Great-great,” you correct him. “But thanks for the sentiment. In truth, I was also hoping for two things in addition to freeing you from the Shinigami… the first of which was preventing anyone else who may have learned your technique from using it the same way Orochimaru tried to.”

“I can certainly consent to anything that promises such security,” Hiruzen-tono admits, stroking his beard thoughtfully. “What do you propose?”

“A contract,” you offer. “It’s the only way I can think of. Establish a written contract for summons that you can refuse, and which even if it doesn’t prevent someone else from summoning you may allow me to circumvent their control of you.”

“That seems reasonable,” Minato-han agrees. “I would sign a contract like that, though I can only speak for myself of course.”

“And the second thing?” Tobirama-tono presses.

>Long story short the Fifth hokage, Tsunade, yes that Tsunade, was hurt while battling the leader of the Akatsuki, and is currently unable to do her duty. As all the other hokage are deceased it defaulted into Hokage candidates, the only one even semi-loyal to the village being Danzo. The same man who causes the formation of the Akatsuki in the first place. The man who has no real support except of the Daimyo who does not know any better and a few elder who have likely been in bed with him since before the Third stepped down to the Fourth. He's caused a great deal of pain without being the leader of a great ninja village, and if he secures his position he will cause a great deal more.

“I figured we could take the chance to exchange information,” you explain. “I tell you about things that happened after your deaths, maybe help you rest a bit easier, and you tell me about some things that happened before my birth, and maybe I come away a bit wiser.”

The four Hokages seem to consider the offer for a few moments, until Hashirama-han laughs. “I see, I see! Very well then, how do you propose we do this fairly?”

“You can each ask one question, in numerical order,” you lay out your reasoning, “then I get to ask two… that way I’m both giving the most and getting the most.”

“Hmmm...” Hiruzen-tono muses thoughtfully. “That certainly sounds reasonable.”

“Then I’ll start,” Hashirama-han nods curtly. “Tell me this, Naori-san, who is the current Hokage?”

“Tsunade,” you reply.

Hashirama seems totally aghast.

“… Tsuna, huh? I wonder… is the village… okay?”

“Would it not be, sir?” Minato-han asks.

“Tsunade was my first granddaughter,” Hashirama explains with a wry grin, “so I spoiled her rotten. I’m afraid she might’ve also picked up my gambling habits!”

this laughing idiot is the First Hokage revered as a ‘God of Shinobi’?

“Please forgive my brother,” Tobirama-tono frowns. “He’s an idiot sometimes...”

“… you don’t have to be so mean, brother...”

“… but can you tell me what the current situation with the Uchiha clan is?” Tobirama finishes his question, ignoring his brother’s plea.

“Yeah no, there is no clan,” you explain. “Only two survivors that I know of, down from three… a masked terrorist who calls himself Tobi, and Sasuke, a young man about my age who’s seen as a hero in Konoha. I suspect both have the Mangekyō… in fact I know that Sasuke has it.”

“Two others that I know of have a single sharingan,” you add, “both Mangekyō. Hatake Kakashi-han of Konoha, and myself. The rest were murdered to preemptively put down a rebellion.”

Tobirama-tono’s eyes narrow at this news, while Hiruzen-tono strokes his beard. “I suppose you answered one of my questions, and the other is more Minato-san’s place to ask… so may I ask where it is that you got that eye?”

“Itachi-han gave it to me,” you explain. “After I lost my original as a genin. He saved my life, and asked for nothing in return… so after he died, I helped Sasuke to repay him.”

“At least she seems to have a sense of duty,” Tobirama-tono grumbles. "The whole clan though..."

“Do you know Uzumaki Naruto, and can you tell me how he’s doing?” Minato-han enquires.

“That’s two questions,” you point out, “but sure. He’s had a rough time lately, but along with Sasuke he’s considered a hero in your village. He fought hard and saved a lot of lives when Konohagakure was destroyed by Akatsuki… and before anyone wastes a question on it there were no casualties but the buildings.”

“Conflict no matter the era,” Hashirama-han muses quietly. “What a shame.”

“The entire village was destroyed?” Tobirama-tono grumbles. “Hiruzen, what is this ‘Akatsuki’ anyway?”

“A band of S-rank criminals and missing ninja, operating as mercenaries,” Hiruzen-tono explains for his seniors. “They came into prominence some time after the Third Shinobi war. I was investigating them when I died, as I had heard a rumor that Orochimaru had joined their ranks. I even planted a spy among their number.”

“Uchiha Itachi,” you add.

“So you knew that much,” Hiruzen muses. “I suppose that means you joined them at some point after my death… it would explain the pattern on your obi.”

“If you’d pardon my interruption, Lord Third,” Minato-han pipes up, “I think we had an agreement with the young lady?”

There are a few options here for you… you could go the more esoteric route, asking questions about the events which shaped the world you grew up in. But you can also ask some questions to either support for or disprove working theories you have, such as discerning ‘Tobi’s’ true identity, or learning more about Danzō’s misdeeds.

I'm leaning towards the villages versus shinobi, as Naori kinda makes the case for shinobi striking out 'alone', and we need to convince the Kages. Danzo is obvious. I'm curious about Grandpa Tobi but oh boi is asking about a genocided clan kinda awkward.

>>4442397
“First question,” you begin. “Why was Shimura Danzō never made Hokage before this point?”

“I can perhaps answer that,” Tobirama-tono muses. “I was the one who trained both Shimura Danzō and Sarutobi Hiruzen, and I was the one who selected Hiruzen as the Third Hokage.”

“My brother may be an idiot,” he continues. “He may be idealistic to the point of naivete… but without that naivete, there would never have been a truce between the Senju and Uchiha, and Konohagakure could never have existed. I know full well that I lack my brother’s idealism, that I’m too much of a pragmatist. Hashirama was the leader Konohagakure needed in its early years, and I consider myself to have been successful only in that I passed on the mantle to another who shared that idealistic nature.”

“That was Sarutobi Hiruzen. But my intention was that after my death, throughout Hiruzen’s tenure, Shimura Danzō would be able to learn from Hiruzen’s idealistic nature, that the two would be able to find a useful working balance the same way that my brother and I were always able to maintain such a balance.”

“In that sense, I suppose I failed,” Hiruzen-tono admits. “I regrettably allowed Danzō unusual latitude in his own actions, which allowed him to create a subsidiary of ANBU that answered to him, rather than to myself. It was a similar failing to that I had with my student Orochimaru… both men grew power-hungry and arrogant. Both would argue that the naivete Tobirama-sensei spoke of would prevent us from going as ‘far’ as they felt was necessary in defense of Konohagakure. Neither truly understood that such recklessness and amorality betrayed the principles of Konohagakure the Hokage should preserve and nurture.”

“Ultimately, I could no longer turn a blind eye to him after two events… first, his attempt to have me assassinated, and second, his setting up the Uchiha clan massacre.”

“That cannot be considered your fault,” Tobirama-tono insists. “Perhaps I did not do enough to discourage him from such foolishness, or perhaps he is simply a grown man who refuses to learn from his mistakes and no one else but him can be blamed for it. It’s not for the dead to pass judgment.”

“Second question, while I have Tobirama-tono talking,” you muse. “You seemed conflicted about the Uchiha when you mentioned them previously. Why?”

“The Uchiha were old enemies of the Senju,” Tobirama-tono explains. “We fought many times when Hashirama and I were children, and I personally killed the younger brother of their leader, Uchiha Madara, during one of those clashes. Many Uchiha, including Madara, fell to madness in their time.”

“How much do you know about the sharingan?”

“A lot,” you admit. “At least about the Curse of Hatred and the Eternal Mangekyō.”
>1/?
>>
>>4442797
“That makes it easier,” Tobirama-tono nods curtly. “Good. Both our clans were known to produce technically-adept shinobi, but where the Senju were known to derive strength from their vitality and zeal for life, the Uchiha were thought to derive strength from their kekkei genkai.”

“I assume you disagree with that?” you muse.

“Correct. Many would also incorrectly state that the Uchiha were cold, devoid of love, when the exact opposite is true. It is when an Uchiha experiences the loss of something which they love that they become truly strong… but this loss also triggers the Curse in many individuals. Kagami, Naori, and from the sound of it this ‘Itachi’, did not suffer the curse. But others were driven mad, as Madara was.”

“The Uchiha clan was always dangerous, but also tragic… it was a complicated issue. And so I always treated the Uchiha as a possible threat, but at the same time a threat that should be avoided by ensuring they had a sense of purpose fitting their abilities, and a sense of belonging within the village. I take it this did not continue after my death?”

“I’m afraid that was partly my fault, sir,” Minato-han admits frankly. “I was killed after a battle with the Nine-Tails… my guess is that a lot of people thought one of the Uchiha was responsible. And they weren’t exactly wrong.”

“Yeah no,” you muse, “that raises some questions from me… but I was the one who decided on the format here, so I’m obliged to follow it.”

“I see,” Hashirama-tono nods curtly. “Very commendable… I’d like to ask you, what is the current state of the world?”

“Clarify,” you reply. “That’s a really broad question.”

“I guess… focus on Konohagakure’s state of affairs and the general stability of geopolitics,” Hashirama clarifies… finally sounding a bit like a leader.

“Konoha’s position is weakened,” you admit. “Pain, the former leader of Akatsuki, out-fought the entire village until I arrived. And after I forced him into a corner he destroyed the whole village with a single attack. All I managed to protect were the hospital and the civilian evacuation centers. But the rebuilding is going quickly, and I helped arrange for shelf-stable food, heavy machinery, water treatment equipment, and that sort of thing to be sent in from my contacts in Amegakure, Takigakure, Hoshigakure, and Kusagakure.”

“Konoha also has a lasting alliance with Sunagakure, particularly thanks to the current Kazekage’s friendship with Uzumaki Naruto.”

“Naruto, hm...” Minato-han muses. “That’s good to hear.”

“But the rest of the world is as chaotic as most of you probably remember it being,” you admit. “Plus Akatsuki has been doing substantial damage.”

“You were once in Akatsuki,” Tobirama-tono presses. “What are your current intentions and loyalties?”

“My intentions are what they’ve always been,” you frown. “To do the best I can with what I’ve been given. At one point I thought that meant working with Akatsuki, reforming it from the inside. When I realized that was impossible I fought against Akatsuki alongside Konoha and Suna. I’ve made friends and useful contacts in most villages… Konoha, Suna, Iwa, Kumo, Kiri, Kusa, Hoshi, Ame, Taki, and Yuki.”

“The five Kages will be meeting shortly in the Land of Iron to discuss the situation with Akatsuki, and I’ve been invited by the hosts to represent the smaller villages and nations. My loyalties… if you can sum that up easily I’d say I’m more of a ‘woman of the people’ than of just one nation.”

Once Tobirama-tono seems satisfied with your answer, you move on to Hiruzen-tono, whose question has a much harder answer. “You mentioned that Tsunade-hime has been made the Fifth Hokage. Tell me, what has happened with Jiraiya and Orochimaru?”

You frown, considering how to break the news to him.

“I take it by your hesitation that the news isn’t good.”
>1/2
>>
>>4443635
“They’re both dead,” you reply, avoiding his eyes. “Jiraiya was killed by Pain when he infiltrated Amegakure, which is where Akatsuki was notionally headquartered. Two of his students are still alive at least… Konan, my sensei from Amegakure, left Akatsuki after Pain, who was her childhood friend and a fellow student of Jiraiya-sensei’s, gave his life to revive the Konoha villagers his attack killed.”

“Uzumaki Naruto is regarded as a hero in the village after fighting Pain… he’d say we played an equal role in that outcome, but I think his idealism did more than he gives himself credit for in reaching the man Pain once was.”

You can tell that Minato-han is proud to hear your account of Naruto’s role in the village’s recent history, and of his studies under his own former sensei, but Hiruzen still seems troubled.

“You should give yourself more credit too,” he insists sternly. “After all, Jiraiya chose to instruct you as well, even for a short time. He may always have seemed frivolous, but he never did anything pointless. And Orochimaru? How did he die?”

“Uchiha Sasuke left the village to study under him,” you explain. “Orochimaru wanted his sharingan… well, he got what he deserved, if not what he wanted. Sasuke killed him.”

“I see,” Hiruzen frowns. “I put him through a lot I fear. His brother as well. Though… at least it’s good to hear that he has returned to the village of his own accord.”

“Thank you for telling me about Naruto,” Minato-han bows politely. “I know you didn’t have to go into such detail.”

“It’s no problem. I said those things because I wanted to.”

“Then tell me something… what do you know about this Uchiha you mentioned that is a part of Akatsuki?”

“I know Itachi-han was wary of him,” you muse. “I also know that he’s very skilled, a natural manipulator. Pain and Konan once seemed to answer to him rather than being the true leaders of Akatsuki, so he might be more powerful than Pain was.”

“I also know that he put Yagura, the former Three-Tails jinchūriki and previous Mizukage, under a long-lasting genjutsu. Complete control, from the current Mizukage’s description, both of the host and of Isobu itself. The genjutsu was apparently so strong that breaking it killed Yagura on the spot.”

“You know something about this, don’t you Minato-han?” you muse. “Care to share?”

“I guess now is as good a time to explain the events of that night,” he sighs. “On the night Naruto was born. It’s a long story, so I apologize in advance.”

“That’s fine,” you insist. “I’m in no hurry.”

“When a jinchūriki gives birth the seal holding their tailed beast weakens,” Minato-han begins. “We thought we had tight security, but somehow a third party found out our plans. That third party managed to release the Nine Tails, and forced me pretty hard in a short fight. His abilities were at least on par with the hiraishin, but were totally different… I eventually bested him with a hiraishin stage two, using a rasengan to counterattack.”

“But the damage was done. Kushina and I managed to contain the Nine Tails, though we both took fatal wounds in the process. I used the Shiki Fūjin to seal half the Nine Tails into myself, and half into Naruto.”

“And you suspected something about this mystery man’s technique?” Tobirama-tono asks, bringing Minato-han back to the main point under discussion.

He nods curtly. “That’s right. I suspected at the time that he must be Uchiha Madara, or at very least an Uchiha with the Mangekyō sharingan who wasn’t Uchiha Fugaku-san.”

“Second question then,” you continue, “open to anyone who has an answer… what are all of the Mangekyō abilities you all know of? Mine allows for the control of ‘flow’: chakra natures I normally don’t have access to, kinetic energy and movement, and to a very limited extent, the flow of time.”

“You probably already know of Itachi’s,” Hiruzen-tono offers. “One eye allows for use of the powerful genjutsu Tsukuyomi, while the other allows for the creation of inextinguishable black flames. I do not know what Fugaku-san’s abilities were… if he ever used the Mangekyō I have no knowledge of it. He was extremely hesitant to rely on it, and only informed me that he had awakened it out of courtesy.”

“Uchiha Shisui could use the Kotoamatsukami, a genjutsu that can so perfectly manipulate a target that no one could possibly know that he had done so. He wished to use that technique on Fugaku-san to prevent the looming Uchiha coup, though he was killed before he could do so. My guess is that Danzō was responsible, though I have no proof.”

“During the war six Uchiha possessed the Mangekyō,” Hashirama adds. “Rai, Baru, and Naka all fought and killed each other on the battlefield… I never got the chance to meet them while they lived. I also know that Naori-san and her friend Naka both possessed it, though each ended up sacrificing one of their Mangekyō to perform kinjutsu with them.”

Then he grins. “Sorry, but my brother’s the expert when it comes to that sort of thing!”
>1/2
>>
>>4444132
“Izanagi is a genjutsu applied to the world itself,” Tobirama-tono explains, “essentially reducing a real event to a dream. Izanami was developed to counter Izanagi, a genjutsu which loops a subject’s experiences until they essentially give up trying to fight it.”

“A genjutsu that breaks its victim’s will,” Hiruzen-tono muses.

“That’s right,” Tobirama-tono confirms. “Both techniques will blind their user in one eye.”

“Do you know what either one’s eyes could do?” you press.

Hashirama nods with a smile. “Naori-san and I knew each other pretty well. She explained that her remaining eye could see things even other sharingan couldn’t… she could discern chakra with greater detail over greater distances, or see heat and magnetic fields, and read movements in the air with incredible precision.”

“The obvious outstanding issue,” you muse, “is Madara.”

“Izuna, his brother, never developed a more complex technique,” Tobirama-tono tells you. “Madara is another question for Hashirama.”

“I only believe I experienced it once,” Hashirama admits. “But I got the impression that he had a way to turn back time, and take a second attempt at events. It was very subtle, but during our last fight I definitely noticed that a few objects in what would eventually become the Valley of the End moved slightly from where they should have been… it suggested that about five seconds passed without my awareness.”

Getting confirmation that Tobi isn't Madara is good info. The amount of missing Uchiha or those whose deaths weren't confirmed probably isn't that big, so checking potential identities of Tobi could be done.

“Feel free to ask me some more questions,” you insist with a shake of your head. “I’m gonna need a minute to mull this over.”

“I’m curious,” Hashirama admits. “You’re a sage, right? Where did you learn to harness senjutsu?”

“I associate with the Shrike clan,” you explain. “Nyoka-han and Zenkibo-han are the ones who’ve done the most in my training. I hear that your clan once had some ties to the region the Shrikes live in now?”

“We did, once,” Hashirama nods. “I learned senjutsu there myself, despite not having a formal summoning clan. Tobirama also took his students there once if memory serves.”

“It was a mistake,” Tobirama-tono admits.

“Having faith in your students is never a mistake,” Hashirama insists.

“Most things when taken to an extreme become mistakes,” Tobirama-tono counters.

“As in many instances,” Hiruzen-tono muses thoughtfully, “the best approach is somewhere in the middle, it seems.”

“You always did have a way of finding balance, Saru,” Tobirama-tono shrugs. “That wasn’t the way of our times. Speaking of which, Naori-kun, you wear armor as we did, and not the flak jackets that it seems later generations adopted. Are we to infer that the current era has grown more warlike as to make such measures necessary?”

You shake your head. “Yeah no, some clans in Konoha still wear armor. For me it’s down to two facts: the kind of opponents I should be expecting, and the style of kenjutsu I use.”

“You learned from the samurai in the Land of Iron, I suspect?” Hiruzen-tono enquires.

“Exactly. So pretty much all of my combat techniques already allowed for armor… in a sense, finally committing to it is more like completing what I’ve spent years working on.”

“How do you find the samurai concepts of the martial arts?” Hiruzen-tono presses. “Consider that my next question.”

“It’s rooted in old philosophies,” you muse politely, “philosophies I wasn’t raised with. But yeah… I thought the idea of a budō was one worth considering as a shinobi. To me at least, blind loyalty to my village just… never seemed like enough, I guess.”

“The samurai also tend to value individual growth and development, both in ability and in mindset,” you add. “Which is something I think gets forgotten sometimes when shinobi are being trained to serve their village.”

“I think you and I are thinking along the same lines,” Minato-han sighs, “so for now let’s agree to dispense with the formalities. Do you believe that the Uchiha you suspect is involved with Akatsuki might be the same man who used the Nine Tails to attack Konohagakure?”
>1/?
>>
>>4445600
“I can’t know,” you admit. “But I strongly suspect. It seems I had a similar experience… did the guy you fought use a chain that trailed behind him, to loop around you after he passed through you?”

“Yes!” Minato-han exclaims. “I almost didn’t realize it in time, but it was actually a really clever approach to combat given his abilities.”

“So it was the same person,” you confirm. “Honestly… I almost died.”

“It seems then that at least some members of your Akatsuki were trying to lay claim to tailed beasts quite some time ago,” Minato-han concludes.

“And the failure probably left him cautious,” you guess. “Someone like me, whose abilities are perfect for capturing a tailed beast solo… it would be much easier to kill a jinchūriki then let me ‘clean up’ afterwards.”

“But he wasn’t counting in your personality,” Minato-han reasons. “Your apparent ability to rise above the bitterness you might understandably feel towards the ‘great nations’ which waged wars across your homeland. Does that sound about right to you?”

“We may be looking too deep into it,” you admit. “But it’s not totally unreasonable either.”

“Yeah no,” you decide, “it’s not Madara. The abilities and fighting style just don’t feel like they add up. Itachi-han’s instincts were right.”

“If it’s not Madara, then I wonder who else it could have been?” Minato-han muses.

You shrug. “I guess I’ll have to ask him next time he shows his… well, mask.”

“I have one last question,” you admit.

“You have a captive audience,” Tobirama-tono observes.

“… that you’ve been remarkably hospitable towards,” Hashirama adds. “Go ahead and ask.”

“The Kages will be meeting for a summit in a few days,” you explain. “And I’m supposed to be representing the smaller villages and non-shinobi nations. The current Kazekage is a friend of mine, and I at least know the current Mizukage. But for the other three… Ōnoki the Fence-sitter, ‘Unruly’ A, and Shimura Danzō the ‘Shinobi of Darkness’.”

“How the hell do I handle those three!?”

“Well,” Hashirama muses thoughtfully, “consider how it is you earned that responsibility in the first place.”

“You seem to have earned the trust and support of many different villages,” Tobirama-tono adds. “Remain true to yourself and you will at least validate their belief in you. That alone will be enough to be considered success.”

“I fought against A many times,” Minato-han offers, “and found him to be an immensely prideful and stubborn man. If you don’t want him to walk all over you you’ll have to earn his respect… though I guess the problem is that I did that on the battlefield.”

“Not all battles are won through force of arms,” Hiruzen-tono muses. “I only ever met the Raikage you speak of a few times… is he truly not a man who can be beaten through dialog?”

“Not in a way that will earn his respect, I don’t think,” Minato-han shakes his head. “I wish I could be more helpful, but they called him ‘unruly’ for a reason. It’s just the sort of man he is.”

“As for Ōnoki,” Tobirama-tono muses, “I only ever knew him as a brat. He’d be an old man by now, which means he’ll be both experienced and intransigent. Understand why he earned the nickname ‘Fence-sitter’, and use the failures of others to sway him as your experience, so that when you speak you will know how best to move him.”

“And Danzō?” you sigh. “Any advice there?”

Hiruzen is the first to eventually speak. “Never let your guard down.”

“Before we end this,” you muse, “do any of you have any messages you’d like me to take to anyone still living?”

The silence you get in return is surprisingly awkward.

“Tell Tsuna two things,” Hashirama muses. “First, not to judge herself by the standards other people are going to set for me… or I suppose, that they have set for me already. Second, remind her that I always hedge my bets when it counted.”

“That’s all?”

He nods curtly. “That’s all.”

“I decline,” Tobirama-tono shakes his head. “Though I do appreciate the offer.”

“Apologize to Sasuke-kun for me,” Hiruzen-tono requests. “I know it may seem like too little, too late, but there are some things that should be said.”

Next you turn to the Fourth, Minato-han, who considers his words carefully. “Tell Naruto something for me?”

“Of course.”

“I’m not sure,” Minato-han admits quietly. “There’s a lot I never got the chance to say, at least to my awareness. But I also made some plans for this sort of situation… I don’t know what’s happened in his life.”

“How many tails has he manifested?”

“Eight,” you inform him, “almost nine. But something seemed to stop him at the last possible sec… that was you, wasn’t it?”

Minato-han nods calmly. “Yes, that was probably me… it seems you know about that technique?”

“I learned from watching you,” you admit. “In Rōran.”

“You ended up protecting the Kingdom?” he enquires. “That’s good. But from what you say, I’ve likely had the chance to say what needed to be said to him.”

“It’s a rare chance.”

He nods in agreement. “It is. And I’m not sure I want to diminish that moment, you know?”

“I understand,” you bow politely.

The number of days until the Kage Summit falls, almost too rapidly at first but then towards the end seemingly not quickly enough, until the day of your departure arrives. You can leave a little later than you might otherwise, because you can teleport Yugito-han’s shadow clone and Karin with you to Amegakure, completely cutting out the quite significant amount of walking that would be involved in crossing the Land of Fire on foot.

But even after having a pleasant breakfast with Konan-sensei, who Yugito-han’s clone is still somewhat guarded around despite the complete lack of seriousness in the context of their meeting, there’s still quite a road ahead.

It’s always more of a slog to get through the Land of Storms than can be anticipated, even after having grown up here. Quite simply, you can’t rely on the roads to be in good condition… some get washed out at points near-equidistant between the small settlements that tend to care for their own little parts of the road.

“So here’s the problem,” you grumble, finally having walked up a long road between two barren, muddy hills to a little saddle between them. “We’re just about at the border with the Land of Stones, and the Ishigakure shinobi aren’t exactly… friendly.”

“How bad?” Yugito-han enquires. “I’ve heard rumors of course, but that’s hardly the same as growing up with them on one of your borders.”

“Yeah, so Ishigakure gets into border skirmishes all the time,” you explain, “and that tends to do two things… it draws in mercenaries like Akatsuki and various missing ninjas, and at the same time it creates both reasons and opportunities for Ishi-nin to defect from their village.”

“I’ve heard the terrorist cells almost outnumber their regular forces,” Karin muses. “I’m sure it’s an overstatement.”

“If only just,” you grumble. “The Land of Iron is on the far side, so unless we want to go our of our way through a miserable desert to the southwest or the Land of Earth to the northeast, going through is the fastest option.”

“All shinobi are supposed to be on lockdown,” Yugito-han muses. “No travel is permitted in the days leading up to the Kage Summit… do you suspect there will be trouble?”

“Yeah no, I doubt Ishigakure will go too far out of their way to cause trouble,” you muse. “But the terrorists there… that’s a different story. They have no reason not to make a move against one of the Kages passing nearby, it’s just a matter of incentive.”

“You think anyone would want to pay Ishi terrorists to attack one of the Kages?” Karin asks with a frown.

“No clue,” you admit. “Probably yes, in theory. You know same as me there’s no love lost for the Kages in the smaller villages. But it’s also a huge risk.”

“We’ll go northeast,” you decide. “If we’re lucky we might run into the Tsuchikage’s party, but at very least we’ll be out of Ishigakure’s territory.”

As it turns out you didn’t meet with the Tsuchikage’s party, or with anyone else for that matter, though there were a few shinobi near the border that you managed to avoid thanks to Karin’s sensory abilities. You soon arrive in the Land of Iron several hours ahead of schedule, and make straight for the building that the summit is to be held in: a large pyramid set at the middle of a series of concentric square walls.

“It’s a bit… how do I say it...” Karin muses.

“Austere,” Yugito-han offers.

“That’s it, yeah.”

“The samurai can be very intense people,” you admit. “Their whole culture seems to turn on discipline and self-awareness.”

“Let’s go in. It feels like Mifune-tono is waiting for us.”

Inside the massive stone structure, the building is mostly empty space, build around a tall core with soaring pillars, but with a dark interior. After winding your way up several flights of stairs that wrap their way around the interior void, you reach the upper floors where several familiar faces are ready to greet you.

“Hello again,” you greet Mifune-tono with a polite bow. “I hope the time of my arrival is fine?”

“You are early,” Mifune admits, “but not too early. I suppose we should expect the kages and their retinues to begin arriving within the next few hours. You are the first.”

“These are my chosen companions,” you introduce the others. “Karin, and Nii Yugito, of Kumogakure.”

“An interesting choice,” Mifune-tono muses. “I look forward to seeing how that plays out.”

“Same here,” you admit.

“Okisuke and Urakaku are both upstairs,” Mifune-tono tells you calmly. “Why don’t you meet with them and examine the meeting room. See if it is to your liking.”

“Thanks,” you bow again. “I think that would be a fine use of my time, Mifune-tono.”

“You two seem well-acquainted,” Yugito-han muses.

“Mifune-tono is a respectable man,” you reply with a shrug. “And a shrewd one too, for sure. A perfect host for something like this."
>1/2
>>
>>4449813
Okisuke is accompanied by a man you’re not familiar with, one with a chonmage-style haircut and a scar over his bushy right eyebrow, with dark eyes. Both wear simple purple scarves around their necks in addition to their simple attire, seemingly concealing communication devices.

“Welcome back,” Okisuke-han inclines his head politely. “What do you think of the room?”

“It’s fine,” you nod. “Karin, Yugito-han, let’s take out the earpieces now.”

“Where will my companions be seated?”

“Behind these curtains,” Okisuke-han gestures to a curtain with the four vertical lines which make up Amegakure’s village symbol. All around the room are matching symbols for Kumo, Kiri, Suna, Iwa, and Konoha.

In the center of the room is a table with six ‘sides’ arranged similarly to a horseshoe, in the opening of which is a small desk which is presumably for Mifune-tono as the moderator. Next to you is the Mizukage’s seat, across from you is Gaara’s, with the others taking up the remaining positions. This was probably intended to keep you away from the Raikage, but not directly across from him.

“I’d prefer to sit in seiza for an official meeting,” you admit, “but this is fine. Not everyone shares my weird sensibilities.”

“Mifune-sama would agree with you,” Okisuke-han admits.

“Good to see that you made it,” Terumi-han inclines her head politely to you when she arrives. “And congratulations.”

“Thank you,” you bow in return. “Good to see you well, Terumi-han. And you too, Chōjūro-han, Ao-han.”

“You should take your positions,” Terumi-han instructs her bodyguards.

“Your seat will be next to mine,” you inform her, “though I really don’t feel like sitting just yet.”

The next arrival is, of course, the Raikage. You know that, because you already know what all of the other participants look like. He’s flanked by two shinobi, one of whom is a blonde, and the other is Darui.

The blonde pauses, and the other two stop so that he can whisper something to the Raikage. Then, the massive shinobi crosses the room in a second to grab you by the collar.

“What is the meaning of this!?” he demands angrily.

“You’ll have to be more specific, Raikage-tono,” you reply calmly. “Also, you’re being pretty rude… this is a diplomatic meeting, not a bar fight.”

“Raikage-dono,” Terumi takes your side. “I’ll have to agree, and ask you to release Raishō-san immediately.”
>2/3
>>
>>4449864
“I agree, uncle,” Yugito-han agrees, having stepped out from behind the curtain. “Mizukage-sama, please forgive the intrusion.”

“It’s quite alright,” Terumi-han nods, having understood Yugito-han’s greeting as well as the Raikage’s outrage. “Though I would appreciate an explanation?”

“I am the jinchūriki of Matatabi, the two-tails,” Yugito-han explains. “The rest of the story is pretty long, and I assume that Lord A will explain it in detail.”

The Raikage releases your collar. “Why is it that you brought Yugito here? As for you, Yugito, why are you accompanying this girl?”

“That’s easy,” Yugito-han crosses her arms. “Because she asked.”

“Was it a mistake?” you ask innocently. “And here I thought you’d be happy to see her again… your niece as it turns out.”

You spare Yugito-han a glance. “You never mentioned that part?”

“I figured you had enough on your plate without having to worry about that angle.”

“You’re probably right,” you admit. “Still, good grief.”

Darui is busy rubbing his neck, seemingly embarrassed by the Raikage’s outburst.

>Darui seems super uncomfortable. Say hi to him and make it worse.

You straighten the collar of your shitagi, then turn your attention away from the Raikage. “Darui-han, good to see you again. How’ve you been?”

“Not bad,” he admits. “Bit tired maybe. You?”

“Not as nervous as I was,” you admit. “It was mostly Raikage-han’s reaction I was anticipating, so now? Yeah no, everything else is going to be easier.”

“The boss means well,” Darui insists with a frown, as though he’s already aware of how that must sound to you. “Least, mostly. He’s just kind of an intense guy… acts quick and runs his mouth sometimes.”

“Speaking of running mouths,” the blonde jōnin partnered with Darui interjects, “you should probably get a handle on yours, Darui.”

“Whatever, C,” Darui sighs. “If it makes you happy.”

After the two jōnin have taken their position, Danzō arrives. No one greets him except with displeased stares, and if it bothers him he shows no sign. His two companions are highly unusual… one with a mask that covers about the opposite parts of his face that Kakashi’s does with two lenses to see through where his eyes are, and the other has a square chin, amber eyes, and pumpkin-orange hair tied back in a ponytail with fringes framing his forehead protector.

The latter is clearly the sensor between the two.

You quickly flash a silent signal to Karin, gesturing for her to keep an eye on the delegation from Konoha.

Danzō makes no effort to talk to either of the other Kages, and takes his seat… only to glare at you in silence.

“Seems like he doesn’t like you,” A-han growls.

“Seems that way, doesn’t it?” you muse.

“Maybe you’re not so bad after all.”

Next to arrive is Gaara, who has brought Temari-han and Kankuro-han with him.

“Apologies,” Gaara inclines his head slightly towards the room. “I had intended to be here first, as the one who has been requesting this meeting the longest… however, I was unfortunately delayed en route.”

“Was it to do with Ishigakure?” Terumi-tono wonders aloud.

“Yes,” Gaara confirms. “We were forced to find… an alternative solution.”
>1/2
>>
>>4451039
“There was a specific order,” Danzō finally speaks up, “effectively barring any shinobi from travelling during the time of the summit. An incident involving the Kazekage seems to suggest an obvious breach.”

“There is no need for any further discussion of the matter here,” Gaara insists calmly. “It is a problem between Sunagakure and Ishigakure, and that is how it will be resolved.”

“Then I will keep any further thoughts to myself,” Danzō muses, “and simply trust that our young Kazekage-sama will handle the matter.”

Temari shifts her weight, but Gaara stops her before it even becomes something that can be called a ‘movement’.

She doesn’t relax, but she does continue going about her business.

“Naori-san,” she greets you coolly in front of the interim Hokage. “I hear you had an adventure up in the Land of Snow?”

“You’d hate it,” you muse playfully. “Somehow it was even colder and wetter than Amegakure.”

“Yikes,” she replies. “Supposedly they use Ice Release though?”

“Yeah no, it’s not quite the same,” you admit. “They tend to use existing ice and snow, unlike how true users of the kekkei genkai are supposed to be able to create it. Looked fancy, at least.”

“Sounds a bit disappointing.”

“Whole trip kind of ended in an anticlimax,” you shrug. “At least for me. I mostly let more personally invested parties take the lead, except when I felt like stepping in to keep things going the way they should.”

“Well, all’s well that ends well, I guess?” she muses.

“That’s certainly true,” you agree. “And for sure, I’m always happy when something like that turns out well. I think meeting Fū did the princess a lot of good.”

“That’s nice.”

Temari and Kankuro take their positions shortly before the Tsuchikage arrives, with Kurotsuchi and a heavily-built and massively tall man with a roughly square head and a large nose.

“Hey,” Kurotsuchi greets you briefly. “I’d stick around and chat but it looks like we’re gonna get started here pretty quick, and I’m technically on the clock right now?”

“No big deal,” you shrug. “There’ll be plenty of time after.”
>2/3
>>
>>4451053
The Tsuchikage is immediately followed by Mifune-tono, which seems to be an unspoken signal for the various representatives to take their seats.

Mifune-tono clears his throat. “I am Mifune, shōgun of the Land of Iron and arbitrator for this summit of the Five Kages. Present are Gaara-dono, Kazekage of Sunagakure in the Land of Wind, Ōnoki-dono, Tsuchikage of Iwagakure in the Land of Earth, Terumi-dono, Mizukage of the Land of Water, A-dono, Raikage of Kumogakure in the Land of Lightning, and representing Konohagakure in the Land of Fire is Shimura Danzō-dono, currently the interim Sixth Hokage candidate in the absence of Tsunade-dono.”

“Also present at my request, and with the consent of three Kages as well as numerous smaller shinobi villages,” Mifune-tono continues, “is Raishō Naori-dono of the Land of Storms, representing all of the other hidden villages outside the five Great Nations.”

“It is not my position to decide on matters relevant to the security and smooth operation of the shinobi villages,” Mifune-tono ultimately declares. “My role is to be a neutral arbitrator only, to ensure that certain decorum is followed in a way that does not favor any nation or village. With that in mind, I wish now to open the floor to discussion.”

“I am opposed to the presence of a known terrorist at this council,” Danzō immediately declares. “She has strong ties to the very organization which we are here to discuss, which has in recent days all but destroyed the village of Konoha and has also launched an attack against Kumogakure.”

“As a former member of Akatsuki,” you counter, “I’d imagine you won’t find a better expert in the subject. And as for Pain defeating your entire village and everyone in it by himself, I didn’t see you taking him on… that was me. I didn’t see you protecting the civilian evacuation shelters and the hospital from being destroyed either… again, me. And I certainly didn’t see you summoning Katsuyu to administer first aid to every shinobi in the village all at once… that was Tsunade-han.”

“But you sure did seem eager to step into her place the minute the opportunity arose.”

“The question is a moot point,” Mifune-han steps in. “Raishō-dono is the widely-recognized representative that I requested, and in addition to her expertise having both served alongside and fought against Akatsuki, she was the one who succeeded in arranging the first diplomatic meeting between all five villages since the days of the very first Kages.”

“She is eminently qualified to be here, and so she shall.”

“If there are no further irrelevant questions,” Gaara muses calmly, “then we should proceed to the task at hand. This meeting has been called to address the continued threat of Akatsuki.”

“And just what do you believe this threat is, Kazekage-sama?” Ōnoki taunts Gaara immediately. “It’s quite impressive to have become Kage at your young age, however it seems that you have still yet to develop a proper sense of perspective.”

“I was nearly killed by Akatsuki,” Gaara declares, still calm and in control despite Ōnoki’s tone. “The one which I fought was willing to annihilate my village in order to secure the tailed beast which once was sealed inside me. Currently they possess Shukaku, as well as five other tailed beasts.”

“The fact that they have been collecting such sources of power should be concerning to all of us. Unless I am mistaken, both of your jinchūriki were taken as well, and yet you refused my previous requests for a meeting.”

“The loss of a jinchūriki is a political and strategic nuisance for a village,” Ōnoki counters with a sharp glance. “Both the wound to national pride as well as the abrupt vulnerability are troublesome, so covert retrieval is the norm. Cooperating with another village would simply signal weakness and invite an open conflict.”

“Pride and fear… such a backwards way of looking at the world, don’t you think?” Gaara frowns.

“Those are the practicalities a Kage must deal with, young man,” the Tsuchikage insists with a smirk. “Ask me sometime, maybe I’d be willing to give you a lesson or two!”

“As much as I disagree with Ōnoki-sama’s tone,” Terumi-han muses, “I have to agree with his strategic assessment. As you well know, Gaara-sama, it takes time and training to master a tailed beast.”

"Naori-san," Gaara glances at you. "What are your thoughts on the matter?"

>A sharingan makes 'mastering' a tailed beast laughable. It would take me just a few seconds.

“Yeah no, the Tsuchikage and Mizukage are correct,” you admit, “but they’re also way off the mark. The Akatsuki’s intent was never to create jinchūriki, otherwise I’d already be one.”

“Then what?” Terumi-han muses.

“The Rinnegan had a way to bypass the usual process and use the tailed beasts as a weapon,” you explain, “by directly drawing on their chakra… that is after all what they are, pure chakra. I stalled that by destroying Pain’s Rinnegan after his death, but...”

“You destroyed the Rinnegan?” A-han presses. “You’re sure of that?”

“Personally,” you insist. “As I was saying, I wouldn’t assume even that’s a permanent solution.”

“Why would you believe this?” Gaara enquires.

“Because the remaining members of Akatsuki all possess unusual abilities,” you clarify. “So I wouldn’t assume anything about them until I understood their abilities better.”

“You don’t already?” Danzō presses.

You nod curtly. “Admittedly, I can tell you the most about members I was either partnered with or that I fought.”

“What members still remain?” Terumi-han asks you. “For the benefit of everyone assembled here.”

“Hoshigaki Kisame, from Kirigakure,” you reply, “who wields the great sword Samehada. Zetsu, probably the weirdest member of Akatsuki… I hardly know his capabilities, but he’s the spy of the organization. Then there’s Tobi, who is… an interesting case. I don’t know exactly how his abilities work, but I know he’s the most dangerous one remaining.”

“Konan, my former sensei, has left the organization to lead Amegakure full-time,” you add. “And Sasori of the Red Sand is still alive, but has left the organization as well.”

“Sasori is still alive?” Gaara repeats. “You know this?”

You nod. “He was my former partner… so I knew immediately that he allowed elder Chiyo and Haruno-kun to believe they had killed him. Pain also believed the ruse, but I don’t know if Tobi did.”

“And you agree with the Kazekage that these remaining three are a true threat?” Ōnoki presses you.

“For sure,” you nod. “Kisame less so, but even I’d have trouble with Tobi. If he figures out a way to access the tailed beasts Pain had previously captured for him… I don’t think any of your villages could escape unacceptable casualties. And this time, Pain won’t be around to revive them.”

A-han, who has until this point remained mostly quiet, slams his palms so hard he shatters the desk he’s been allocated to sit at. The worktop splinters under the force of the impact, and at the disturbance the Kages’ various bodyguards virtually appear out of nowhere.

“Enough talk!” he roars. “I didn’t come here to debate whether we should finish these damn terrorists off, I came here to decide on how to do it!”

“Raikage-dono,” Mifune-han sighs wearily, “if you could kindly refrain from such outbursts it would be greatly appreciated. As for the rest of you, if you would be so kind as to withdraw your bodyguards so that we can resume?”

“That’s enough, Temari, Kankuro,” Gaara declares first. “There’s no threat.”

Temari and Kankuro take a few steps back, but are obviously still on edge.

“C, Darui, back off for now,” A-han orders.

Darui hops off the desk with a sigh, putting his folding cleaver sword back on his back. “Suit yourself, boss.”

“Chōjūro, Ao, it’s alright,” Terumi-han insists calmly, ordering her guards to fall back as well.

Danzō gestures to his own men. “Fū, Torune, step back… but remain alert.”

“Kurotsuchi, Akatsuchi,” Ōnoki orders, without specifying what he wants them to do. Kurotsuchi shrugs, and they both do as instructed. “Seems your guards are a little bit slow on the draw.”

“They realized there was no threat,” you shrug, having already unsealed your armor straight onto your body and entered Sage Mode.

“Hm?” the Tsuchikage muses before it dawns on him. “Oh… well then. This is my first time seeing your skills firsthand. I know that several people I have spoken to praised them, but this caught me quite off guard.”

“And how many of those were Akatsuki themselves?” A-han demands.

“What do you mean?” Gaara demands.

“The members of Akatsuki were all missing shinobi from your villages!” A-han insists angrily. “If you had all kept your operations tighter we wouldn’t be in this situation! And to make matters worse, all of your villages have used the Akatsuki in battle!”

“The Kages have used Akatsuki?” Gaara wonders. “Naori-san, is this true?”

“Absolutely,” you cock your head at him. “What, was there ever any doubt?”

“Unlike the current hidden villages, whose respective daimyō are all pursuing disarmament to save money in these relatively peaceful times,” Ōnoki-han smirks, “the Akatsuki consisted of members forged in battle. Each and every one of them possessed unique skills which allowed them to thrive amidst conflict, and they always delivered superb results.”
>2/3
>>
>>4451892
“Even the previous Kazekage wasn’t innocent,” A-han glowers at Gaara. “Were you really unaware that Orochimaru was a member of the group?”

“Orochimaru had already left Akatsuki by that point after a conflict with Itachi-han,” you explain calmly. “Similarly, the rumors I’ve heard that Danzō-tono and Orochimaru used to be closely-aligned apply to before his defection… so far as I’m aware at least.”

“I resent the accusation,” Danzō grumbles.

“That’s nice,” you shrug. “But I don’t care. Also, A-tono, one of Kakuzu-han’s previous partners was from Kumo if I remember correctly… but he died before I joined. My understanding was Kakuzu was always… a problem before Hidan joined up.”

“You’re also guilty of ratcheting up tensions, Raikage-dono!” Ōnoki-han adds with a smirk. “Going around collecting secret techniques and kekkei genkai in these times of peace. How many times have you tried to steal the Byakugan from the same little girl, for example? Is it up to two or three now?”

Before anyone else can seize on that, Mifune-han intervenes again. “I have a proposal, if you are all willing to entertain it. A temporary solution.”

“And that would be?” you reply, letting your senjutsu slowly diminish at its natural rate.

“It seems that much of your trouble comes from each other rather than just from Akatsuki,” Mifune explains. “Your hyper-vigilant stances against the threat of invasion and competition from abroad, your constant search for any edge, your expectation of betrayal for pure self-interest. I propose that we set aside such concerns on a temporary basis, until such time as the remaining threat from Akatsuki and the captured tailed beasts is dealt with.”

“I would like to propose the foundation of the first shinobi union, comprising all five great nations.”

“That’s a fine idea,” Gaara agrees, “however there is still a sticking point even were we all to accept the necessity of such a measure in this particular time and under these specific circumstances… with five leaders all jostling for position within a union, the strength and effectiveness of that union is diminished. Even the long-term alliance between Konoha and Suna can be fragile at times.”
>3/4
>>
>>4451909
“There would need to be one representative placed in overall authority for all actions taken jointly for the duration of the union,” Mifune-han explains. “The Kazekage is too young to command wide respect outside his own village. The Tsuchikage meanwhile is too old, and has become mired in inter-village conflict for too long. He has also hired Akatsuki too many times in the past."

"As Kirigakure is rumored to be the birthplace of Akatsuki, the connection is too strong for other nations to ignore, and if you’ll forgive my saying so, the Raikage is far too temperamental and has caused unrest and division even without the involvement of Akatsuki.”

Now the gloves come partially off. Tell everyone how Akatsuki was created and how it was originally destroyed with Danzos assistance. Tell everyone that this was just one case of many of Danzo acting independently over rest of the village for his own benefit. Heavily hint that you know more details. Make emphasis that only reason Danzo is here is that he is last of the Hiruzens generation and that Tsunade couldn't be here due to sustaining wounds during the defence of Konoha.

Don't spill everything about Danzō, right now Naori has leverage on him as long as she keeps these secrets. The correct play is to clear up the misconception surrounding the history and make heavy implications while making unwavering eye contact to Danzō.
>>
I would caution against tipping our hand too much. Revealing or even implying that our disapproval of Danzo has a personal element to it would put our objectivity in question. It might even backfire: it's not just Danzo's reputation on the line. It certainly would make Konoha look incompetent to air their dirty laundry--possibly enough to scupper the whole alliance. Konoha's less evil people might prefer to handle him internally rather than having us choose for them.

Rather than unloading, put forward just enough information to make those present not want to agree--at least not without slapping some seriously limiting conditions on him. The extra scrutiny could be even better than sending him back to the Danzo cave in defeat to work on whatever his next scheme is.

“Yeah no, there’s a few points I’d like to make,” you interrupt, “before you actually recommend Danzō-han for the job… the first being that as I explained to Tsunade-tono Akatsuki formed in Amegakure with the goal of ending our civil wars in a lasting peace.”

“It only turned to S-ranked criminals to fill its ranks after Hanzō depleted them with the help of Danzō-han. Kirigakure has been as much a victim as anyone else.”

“This much appears consistent,” Terumi-han admits calmly. “Our previous Mizukage, Yagura-san, was placed under a genjutsu so powerful that it killed him upon its removal. This technique more than likely belonged to this ‘Tobi’.”

“And why would it be ‘Tobi’?” Danzō presses. “Uchiha Itachi seems the most likely candidate.”

“Because by all accounts it occurred before Itachi-han joined the organization,” you counter. “Between the information that Mizukage-tono has given me and that I have given her, Itachi-han can be ruled out even if you don’t trust my word that Tobi was the culprit.”

“You say that Danzō helped create the Akatsuki as we know it?” Ōnoki frowns. “Well, that’s certainly worth considering, wouldn’t you agree Mifune-dono?”

“At the moment this is speculation,” Mifune-han replies calmly. “Where the points against the other candidates exist within the realm of concrete fact.”

“It’s also a concrete fact that Tsunade-tono placed him back under house arrest when she found out,” you insist.

“It is also true that Konohagakure still possesses its jinchūriki,” Mifune-han counters. “The number of nations with direct, vested interests in the success of this joint mission is limited to Konohagakure and Kumogakure.”

“And by that logic, me,” you counter. “I personally saved Gaara-tono’s life when he was captured, turned on Akatsuki, killed two of their members and fought Pain solo, and one of the three remaining jinchūriki is living at my house? Yeah no, by your standards I’d be the best qualified to lead this union and that can’t be right!”

In a blur of activity, several things happen almost at the same time.

Hiramekarei clashes against a tantō, and Chōjūro and Fū are now locked in a close melee. Yugito’s shadow clone suddenly has Torune at the tips of her extended claws, both ANBU and jinchūriki waiting motionless for any hints as to the other’s intentions.

Mifune-han’s meitō is stopped short of slashing at Yugito by your own, Umekiri only half-drawn to protect your side after you vaulted over your table.

“Shimura Danzō,” Ao declares, crouched atop Terumi-tono’s tabletop. “Show us what you’ve got hidden under those bandages.”
>1/2
>>
>>4452979
“And why should I follow the orders of what at the moment is still my enemy?”

“To save me the trouble of an explanation,” Ao frowns, tapping his eyepatch. “Behind this eyepatch is a precious spoils of the last war, a byakugan. I assume everyone here is familiar with its properties, so I’ll be brief… I detected a familiar chakra in your right eye socket. I’ll take the memory of it to my grave… the chakra of Uchiha Shisui.”

“Shisui of the Shunshin?” Terumi-han muses. “The one whose prowess was said to equal or even exceed Itachi’s?”

“The very same,” Ao confirms.

“Shisui-han,” you muse. “So it’s Kotoamatsukami, but on… Mifune-tono?”

Mifune’s eyes widen for a moment as if he’s realizing only now what he’s in the middle of doing. “This… can’t be right. I was certain...”

“Kotoamatsukami is the ultimate genjutsu,” you explain. “Complete control, so subtle that no one could possibly discern that it’s being used… except by observing the user.”

“The young lady is correct,” Ao agrees stiffly. “Surprisingly so, in fact. Don’t consider it your fault, Mifune-sama.”

Mifune-han lowers his sword, slowly, and as he does so you ease Umekiri back into her saya. “No hard feelings,” you insist.

“To pull a stunt like that in the middle of a high-stakes meeting,” Ōnoki scoffs. “What in the world could you have been thinking?”

“It is precisely because the stakes are high that I chose to act,” Danzō insists. “I’ll make no apologies for seeking the best chance for success in this objective, and for the greatest success possible for my own village in the bargain.”

“I had considered you to be the front-runner,” Mifune admits, “and might still be considering it had you not gone so far out of your way to ruin your own chances. Now I feel that Naori-dono’s words, though offered in jest, have a ring of truth to them.”

“She would be a suitable leader,” he shrugs, “tempered in battle as Tsuchikage-dono suggested, supported broadly even within the great shinobi nations, and showing remarkable judgment for one so young. However her instincts in this case are also correct… I believe there would be significant doubt as to whether she was the ideal leader, as opposed to one of the Kages. And such doubt would ultimately be destructive to the fledgling union’s long-term stability.”

“I agree completely,” you admit. “Besides, I don’t really even want the job.”

“So who do you think should have it?” A-han demands, asking what doubtless is on everyone else’s mind.

>>
>>4452999
“You can’t be serious,” Danzō scowls.

“I’d shut up if I were you,” Yugito-han counters. “You’re not exactly in a position to be butting in.”

“For real, a lot of what was said before is true,” you admit. “I like Gaara-tono a lot and respect him as a leader, but he’s too new at this to command widespread respect except from Suna and Konoha. Ōnoki-tono may be the most experienced of the five Kages, but he’s also got the dirtiest hands… no offense intended.”

“None taken,” the Tsuchikage shrugs.

“As for A-tono,” you muse with a frown, “we… aren’t on good terms. Putting that aside his passions cut both ways… he’s impulsive, but dedicated. He’s decisive, but divisive. I can’t say for certain whether he’d be a good choice or a bad one.”

“Terumi-tono is also fairly new at this,” you admit, “but is more experienced than Gaara-tono is at his young age. She should also be clear of suspicion regarding any involvement with Akatsuki. Of the four Kages here, I’d lean towards her.”

“Of the four here?” Gaara-han repeats.

The only reason I don't like A is because he's a blunt instrument. He takes the most direct route to any conclusion, and we're dealing with someone who has been fighting a shadow war against all of shinobi-kind for years.

And as far as Terumi is concerned, if the problem is commanding respect, Kirigakure is widely considered *absolutely terrifyingly batshit insane* at this point in time. They have a MAJOR PR issue.

Gaara or Tsunade are still the best choices.

“My first choice would be Tsunade-tono,” you admit. “She fought in previous wars, helped maintain the union between Suna and Konoha, and revolutionized the way shinobi organize themselves. She has all the right qualifications with basically none of the baggage.”

“Except Tsunade-sama is unable to take the role,” Terumi-tono observes. “Unfortunately.”

“And the five Kages will need to take a more solid proposal for ratification by their respective daimyō,” you shake your head, “yeah no, I know.”

“Which leaves us four candidates,” Terumi-tono muses. “So, who?”

“Terumi-tono’s baggage is still the ‘Blood Mist’,” you explain. “A-tono’s is his aggressively militaristic stance even after the last war. And I don’t think I get to decide which is worse.”

“Were we to define specific roles within the union,” Mifune-han muses, “would that change the situation?”

“It’s possible,” Gaara admits thoughtfully. “What, specifically, would you propose?”

“Incorporation of the other Kages within the organizational structure at key points,” Mifune-han suggests. “Delegate responsibility for tactical-level decisionmaking in such a way that the Supreme Leader, elected here, would be more in charge of strategic...”

“Wait,” you insist suddenly.

Entering into sage mode you find that you can sense it too.

“He’s here,” you declare, stepping up onto your desk and unsealing dozens of tags using your raikō kenka marking on your left hand, marking them all with the hiraishin formula before hiding them using genjutsu.

A few moments later a familiar orange mask appears from out of one of the walls. There’s a noticeable pause.

“Have I come at a bad time?”

In a flash Mifune-han crosses the room and draws his sword, only for the edge to slip straight through Tobi’s head. Mifune kicks off the wall and back out into the room, cancelling and reversing his momentum to get away from his unexpectedly still-living opponent.

Using that as a distraction Danzō finally makes his move, using a flash bomb to slip around Chōjūro’s side and attack you with what looks like a wind-release chakra flow technique, extending from a simple kunai. Is he literally joking with this?

There are a few things you can do right now, but only one of them stands out as the absolute requirement to consider today at least salvaged: get the Kotoamatsukami the hell away from Tobi.

And so you leave an illusion of yourself behind and move with a speed far greater than Danzō’s, using your senjutsu-enhanced physical awareness and coordination to pluck the eye right out of his socket in the very instant he thinks he’s destroying Izumi-han’s sharingan where it rests in your own left socket.

To his credit there’s no screaming, no evidence whatsoever that your near-instantaneous surgery caused him any pain, though you know it must have. Instead he gestures for his adjutants to withdraw.

“Turnabout’s fair play,” you muse as you seal Shisui-han’s eye into your palm. “Wouldn’t you say?”

“Fū, Torune,” he orders. “We’re leaving… while we still have anything to lose.”

“But sir...” Fū begins, but Danzō immediately snaps at him.

Follow my orders this instant!” he barks, as he makes for a hallway at the back of the room.

“Wait,” you insist to Yugito and Chōjūro, blood still dripping from between your fingertips. “We have a bigger problem.”

Chōjūro glances at Terumi-tono, who nods in silent agreement.

“Well that was fun,” Tobi muses, “though I must admit I had hoped that either Danzō would succeed in at least leaving a mark on you, or else that I would get Shisui’s eye.”

“I figured that might be what you were after,” you counter, “Tobi-han.”

“Please,” Tobi replies calmly. “Just call me Madara… you, who are of Mito’s clan.”

“Good name-dropping of Hashirama-tono’s wife,” you muse. “But yeah no, what’s your angle here?”

“I merely wished to do the Kages the courtesy of announcing my plans,” Tobi explains patiently. “And your presence gave me quite the tempting target of opportunity… and before you ask, I had intended to use Kotoamatsukami on your sensei.”

“If you’re looking for the Rinnegan I destroyed it,” you explain.

“I’m aware,” Tobi admits, “and believe me I was quite furious, after I took the trouble of implanting them into Nagato-kun.”

“What’s even happening right now?” Yugito-han spares you a glance.

“I have no idea,” Gaara mutters. “You claim to be...”

“Quiet for a moment,” Tobi glares at Gaara, “former-jinchūriki brat. I’m talking with the young lady here.”

“So Nagato-han didn’t have any Uchiha blood after all,” you frown, deeply concerned at the confirmation. “I see… so he was always being manipulated, right from the beginning.”

“Of course,” Tobi confirms. “As are most shinobi born into this world… as you have been by Itachi. By now you must be aware that your own Mangekyō will mature into a Rinnegan, given sufficient time and a proximal cause?”

“I suspected as much.”

“Good,” he muses. “That saves me the trouble of explaining those details. I am here because the imminent nature of your own future Rinnegan has forced my hand, to a degree. I’d like you all, the five Kage and the representative of the lesser shinobi nations, to consider a proposal: Project Tsuki no Me.”

“The Eye of the Moon?” Terumi-han repeats, uncertain.

“And you did say ‘Madara’,” Ōnoki frowns. “As in, Uchiha Madara?”

Of course, you know that’s pure nonsense.

“Yeah, no,” you muse calmly. “You can’t be Madara. Madara’s Mangekyō affected time, yours affects space.”

Tobi stares at you calmly. “What makes you think that one Mangekyō affects space and the other affects time?”

“It’s possible,” you admit. “But if the real Madara had a technique like yours, I’m pretty sure someone would know about it.”

“She’s right,” Ōnoki-tono agrees. “I have no recollection of Uchiha Madara possessing the ability to phase through solid matter, and I actually met the man once in battle.”

“So, who does that make you?”

After a moment, ‘Tobi’ takes off his mask.

The face underneath is certainly not as old as Uchiha Madara’s should be, and one side of it is covered in scars.

“The name I was born with was Obito,” he explains, almost directly to you more than anyone else in the room. “During the Third Shinobi World War, after I was left for dead on the battlefield, I was found by Uchiha Madara, who was in the later years of his life.”

“How?” you demand.

“He had used the Gedō Mazō to prolong his own life,” ‘Obito’ explains calmly, before replacing his mask. “Before he passed he taught me extensively, and entrusted me with his will. Now I identify myself as Madara in his place, and will continue to do so until such time as the Tsuki no Me is completed.”

“Now that you know my identity, will you do me a favor and let me finish speaking?”

You gesture for him to continue.

“Good,” Obito muses. “The dream which Madara entrusted to me was his solution to the problem which is our world… a world which turns on an axis of hatred and suffering, watered with the blood of men and women sacrificed needlessly in armed struggles which only seem important at the time, and which are soon forgotten by history.”

“Tsuki no Me… a living dream-state attainable by every living human simultaneously. A world that would never know the conflicts of the past, where the sort of tragedies we have all experienced could never occur. Imagine a world, Naori-kun, where your mother and father never died. The Tsuki no Me promises such a world, not just for you, but for every living person.”

“And for that, you require the tailed beasts,” Yugito-han interrupts. “I’d never see this ‘prefect’ world of yours.”

“Some sacrifices would need to be made,” Obito admits calmly.
>1/2

>“Tsuki no Me… a living dream-state attainable by every living human simultaneously.

This is nothing more than a coward’s way out of trying to make actual meaningful change. I’m sure Naori has a lot to say about that.
>>
>>4455950
The world of that would be just illusion, a false world. Both Obito and Naori know the genjutsu and illusions, they are all just ways for the originator of the illusion to influence the people with way they want.
>>
>>4455950
“But you knew that, didn’t you?” Obito turns his attention back to you. “There was a time when you were willing to contemplate such a trade under much less absolute terms. So I have to ask you now, what are three lives, compared to the eternal well-being and happiness of literally every other person in the world?”

“How is that any different than the logic of this world we already live in?” you counter.

“The difference is between stagnation and revolution,” Obito insists, “surely you can see that?”

“Maybe,” you concede, “but what you’re talking about isn’t just a world without conflict: it’s a world without meaning. If nothing I do affects anyone else, negatively or positively, then what value is there in my existence? What future do I have when no decision I make has any consequences? And what happens to the people I care about, and who care about me?”

“They’ll all be there...”

“As dreams,” you interrupt. “They won’t be real, with all the little nuances and imperfections that make me love them that much more. What you’re talking about is a nightmare, and I don’t give a damn what happened to you during the war, because nothing gives you the right to inflict that on anyone else.”

“Do the rest of you feel similarly?” Obito demands of the assembled Kages.

“It’s strange to find myself agreeing so wholeheartedly with the Akatsuki-girl… with Raishō-san, rather,” A-tono admits with a scowl. “But no you’re asking me to sacrifice my brother and my niece for illusions? You can go to hell!”

“Not just us in this room,” Gaara-han muses calmly, “but every living person. You’re asking us to let you separate families and friends, to destroy the meaning in all their lives, for what? For the illusion of meaning?”

Seeing no dissent on the matter, Obito sighs wearily behind the mask. “I can’t say that I’m surprised, but it appears that negotiations have broken down. That’s too bad, because my only alternative is to declare the Fourth Shinobi World War, from this moment.”

“Many people are going to die because of your stubbornness.”

“How arrogant,” Ōnoki muses, “to think that one man can oppose all the nations in the world in a war. You might be Madara after all.”

Tobi fades back into the wall with a laugh. “We’ll see soon enough who the arrogant one is, I suppose.”

“Ominous,” you muse.

“This ‘Obito’ has to have a plan to implement this ‘Tsuki no Me’, for sure,” you muse. “But what will his first step… ah. Danzō. He’s going to go after Danzō.”

“Wait, isn’t he after Yugito-san?” Chōjūro wonders aloud as you vault over the table for the now-absent Konohagakure representative.

“Shadow clone,” you insist as Karin joins you.

“Darui! A-han orders. “Go with her!”

“Got it, boss,” Darui replies flatly, chasing after you and Karin.

“I can still sense him,” Karin informs you as you head out of the building. “He and his flunkies are heading for the border, they’ve made a surprising amount of progress.”

“Can you sense Obito?” you ask.

“Not right now...” she admits. “And… not at all? How is that possible?”

“I’ll explain it later,” you insist. “How far ahead are they? Within the distance we can catch up to them?”

“I think so,” Karin replies, before catching a hiraishin kunai that you toss at her even before you get the answer.

“Hang back and use the wave transmission technique,” you tell her. “Darui and I will catch him… warn me the instant you sense Obito.”

“I get you!” Karin insists.

“So… what’s even going on right now?” Darui-han asks you after you leave Karin behind. “Cause I’ve gotta admit I’ve been lost for a while now.”

You make sure that you’re transmitting the message to Karin as well as you explain. “Obito is an Uchiha survivor who’s been manipulating Akatsuki behind the scenes, and his right eye can use a technique that manipulates spatial planes, similar to my hiraishin but more versatile. Right now he’s probably travelling inside his own pocket dimension, trying to locate Danzō so he can emerge there rather than chasing him down like we are.”

“Here,” you add, tossing a kunai to Darui almost as an afterthought. “Speaking of which, hang onto that for a moment.”

“One more thing,” Darui-han frowns. “How’d you know that this Obito guy knew that Yugito was a clone?”

“Because Obito’s smart enough to know that I’m smart enough not to bring her along in the flesh,” you clarify.
>1/2
>>
>>4456700
“So all that stuff about eyes...” Darui-han presses. “Mangekyōs, and Rinnegans, and all this talk about the moon?”

“Yeah no, it’s secret Uchiha stuff,” you explain vaguely. “Sharingan is the basic version, Mangekyō is what Itachi-han and Shisui-han had, and what Sasuke-han, Kakashi-han, Obito, and I all have. The Rinnegan is what Pain and the Sage of Six Paths had, and the way people get it now is to combine the bloodlines of the Sage of Six Paths’ two sons.”

“In my case, Uchiha and Uzumaki.”

“Alright, so that’s probably way more than I needed to know,” Darui-han admits, “but thanks for the rundown anyway. So what I’m taking away is that this Obito guy is pretty intense?”

“Very,” you confirm. “Yeah.”

“So why’s he after Danzō?” Darui-han wonders aloud. “I mean you’ve got that dude Shisui’s eye already, right?”

“Danzō’s had plenty of time to get hold of other sharingan,” you explain, “so my guess is that he had more than just Shisui’s… I just stole the most powerful one back.”

“So why wouldn’t he come after you instead?”

“Cause he knows I’m not an easy mark,” you decide, having asked yourself the same question. “We both have the Mangekyō sharingan, and I’ve proven I’m too fast with my hiraishin for him to beat me with just his spatial ninjutsu.”

“So my guess is that it’s just too much of a frustration for not enough benefit.”

”He’s stopped, Obito is back again. This is a perfect chance to catch up!”

“Got it!” you reply. “Darui-han, it seems like Danzō and Obito are fighting already.”

“It’s a good chance to catch up,” Darui replies, “but it’s also a chance for this Obito guy to waste Danzō before we get there.”

“I guess it really depends on how well ROOT’s bodyguards hold out...”

”One of Danzō’s flunkies just disappeared!” Karin reports to you.

“Are you for real right now!?” you demand angrily.

“One of em’s dead, right?” Darui-han sighs. “Least you can’t fault the guy’s sense of timing.”

You arrive just in time to watch Obito dispose of Fū, the orange-haired man with the tantō, seemingly pulling him into thin air… so that’s it. He pulled his victim into the spatial dimension he uses to transport himself, and to phase through objects.

“Well, now that the appetizers have been dealt with,” Obito muses, “let’s move on to the main course, shall we?”

Danzō seems unimpressed. “So, you’ve come to track me down after all. That was a mistake.”

“We’ll see,” Obito replies calmly, almost as though he’s amused.

We have hiraishin marks little bit everywhere, so I say that we should go and grab Danzo and teleport away. We clearly now know that Obito can throw people into his own spatial dimension and that it took him some time to catch up on Danzo. This means two things, Obito can just yeet Danzo when he wants and that he is slower than Naori is. If we can grab Danzo and teleport away, Obito can't take his body.

To get started, you throw a handful of marked paper shuriken at both combatants where they’re fighting atop a wide stone bridge, then teleport to one of them already mid-swing. Umekiri’s edge passes through Obito’s body, and he slips through you like you expected him to. Then comes the second part of his attack: the chain strategy again. He really means to trap you with them, then get rid of you the same way he did with those two ROOT guys? Too bad for him you have other ideas.

With a twitch of your fingertips three of the paper shuriken pull themselves out of the ground and release chakra as they spin, creating three small rasengan that pass through Obito’s body along with a fourth that spins low between Danzō’s feet.

“Hello, Danzō.”

Obito continues past your attacks and begins to pull Danzō into his own pocket of spacetime, which must logically be how his technique works, only to find your trap waiting in the form of a spinning paper shuriken that rises towards his mask.

“Shiyō Kibaku Fūken!”
(Hydrangea Exploding Sealed Blade)

One paper shuriken explodes… then four, one for each point of the shuriken. Then those four explode into sixteen. Then those sixteen explode into sixty-four, and you stop there. In the span of maybe two seconds you set off a total of eighty-five explosions.

Meanwhile you teleport to the paper shuriken now floating behind Danzō, grab him by the back of his collar, and teleport back to Darui-han.

Darui-han stares at you and the pall of dust and smoke rising into the gently falling snow, and shakes his head.

“Nope.”

Behind you, Danzō takes a swing with the same attack that he used at the Kage summit, which you stop by grabbing his wrist and flipping him through the air. The chakra disperses so that he doesn’t accidentally chop anything of his own off that won’t grow back, and practically the instant he hits the ground he manages a perfect ukemi maneuver, rolling away from you and back to his feet.

“That was a nasty attack,” you hear Obito’s voice behind you. “Katon: Bakufū Ranbu!”

You turn and immediately counter the spatially-twisted fireball that Obito launches your way. “Senpō: Rekuyemu!”

The sage-enhanced Ranton flow technique blasts the chakra back in his direction so powerfully that you’re not entirely sure he’ll be able to absorb it… and you’re proven correct when the result is a massive explosion.

”How the hell did he survive THAT!?”

Karin’s outburst confirms what you already suspected.

“Just how many of Lord Second’s techniques have you stolen, girl!?” Danzō demands angrily as he throws a pair of wind-enhanced shuriken at you like lethal, transparent dinnerplates.

“I dunno, Danzō,” you shoot back, threading Umekiri through the hole in one shuriken and using it as a shield to deflect the other before slinging it into a nearby hillside. “When are you gonna realize that I’m not the problem here!?”

“I have to ask that as well,” Obito muses, not quite unharmed. He’s produced a massive gunbai, a signal fan used during the warring states era before the hidden villages were founded, but his mask has also been blasted off one side of his face. “I would have though the irony wouldn’t be lost on you that I’m trying to save you just as you are trying to save him… though it’s not actually an identical situation.”

“In what way?”

“You actually deserve salvation,” Obito declares. “By the way, if you were wondering, yes… your little trick with the shuriken worked perfectly. That Ranton-style attack of yours was nasty as well, however I managed to block it with this.”

“Uchihagaeshi,” Danzō scowls. “Where the hell did you learn that technique?”

“That’s right, you punked out early,” Darui-han muses. “Short of it is this guy apparently learned it from Uchiha Madara.”

“That’s impossible,” Danzō insists angrily. “Uchiha Madara died, a long time ago.”

“No, Danzō,” Obito sighs wearily, “I think you’ll find that your delusions and reality are two quite different things.”

“Yeah no, I can see why Tobirama-tono chose Hiruzen-tono to be the Third over you,” you growl quietly at Danzō. “You talk a tough game, but when it comes down to it you’re a coward who lets others put their lives on the line for you, and because of that you will never become Hokage. You’ll always be a loser.”

“Now stay out of my way while I do your job for you.”

Danzō seems to be, at least for the moment, stunned into silence by the thorough rebuke.

“My, that’s quite the sharp tongue you have,” Obito muses thoughtfully.

“You’re worse, for sure,” you counter, raising your sword to a cautious ko-gasumi stance, blade aimed at Obito’s face, your left hand supporting the hilt in the seal of confrontation. “You’ve turned your back on more than just a philosophy… you’re working to betray reality.”

“Nothing that reality hasn’t already done to me,” Obito replies, his smirk still hidden behind the remnants of his mask. “Tell me, why protect scum like Danzō, knowing full well the things he’s done?”

“Because this isn’t justice,” you reply tersely. “Seriously, revenge just isn’t good enough. Also… I’m assuming he has more sharingan on him. You’ve probably made the same guess too, right?”

“Definitely,” Obito admits. “Though your presence here has become a problem… honestly, I think I’m beginning to understand what Madara got out of his rivalry with Senju Hashirama. Having someone opposed to me who is so close in ability… perhaps even with a slight edge… gives me something to sharpen myself against.”

“So many abilities which could just end this fight of ours… and so many of those simply won’t work. It’s all so very fascinating, don’t you think?”

“Not the word I’d use,” you admit.

“I will not continue to be so humiliated!” Danzō shouts, releasing a series of arcing blades of compressed wind-release chakra towards both you and Obito. “Multiple Kagebunshin!”

Where once there was only one loser, now there are four, all charging headlong after the wind blades. One throws wind-enhanced shuriken, one weaves hand seals and fires a stream of tiny bullets of compressed air, and two charge you with wind chakra-flow blades glowing around their kunai.

“How pathetic,” Obito sighs, hurling his gunbai over your shoulder and hitting one of the Danzōs in the face to dispel it. You dodge the air bullets by throwing a hiraishin kunai, then teleporting to Darui’s marking for just a second, then teleporting to the kunai and slashing through the clone. The one in the back is the true Danzō.

“Perfect!” this Danzō shouts as his final clone draws perilously close to Obito. The one before you too… the real Danzō... stabs himself in the heart. “Both of you are threats to Konohagakure… both of you must be eliminated at any cost
>1/2

>>4458764
It’s a very dramatic turn of events.

A jet-black cascade of liquid pours out of Danzō’s chest as his life fades, growing into a massive pool at his feet before withdrawing, taking two huge, perfectly hemispherical chunks of earth and stone with it. The two large gaps in the snow begin to slowly fill in as Darui-han quickly grabs the body from out of the bottom of one crater and hauls it quickly away from the scene of the battle.

“How pointless,” Obito muses, rising out of the ground like some kind of living ghost. “To accomplish nothing even with his dying breath… pointless, but at the same time a fitting legacy to the worst shinobi Konohagakure has ever produced.”

“It denied you your prize,” you glare at him. “Again.”

“True,” Obito admits. “I have to admit, this has sort of taken the fun out of our little exchange. Another time, maybe?”

>Go. It’s not like I can stop you any more than you could stop me.

“Tell me one thing before you disappear,” you demand. “Who did you lose?”

“Ask around,” Obito replies calmly as he sinks into the ground. “I’m sure you’d do that anyway, so I won’t spoil the surprise.”

“Until the next time we meet, Raishō Naori-san… I’m already looking forward to it.”

I can’t sense Danzō or Obito anymore, what happened!?

“They’re gone,” you reply. “I’ll explain in a bit, meet me back at the summit building.”

Upon returning with Karin and Darui-han, the latter deposits Danzō’s corpse on the floor in the middle of the room.

“It didn’t go according to plan,” you admit.

“Did you kill him?” A-tono demands angrily.

“Nah, boss,” Darui-han insists. “It was nuts, that Obito guy and Raishō-san here were way out of my league… Danzō’s too, and he knew it. Basically only part I caught was when he used some kinda suicide technique.”

“It was a seal designed to activate on his death,” you explain, “to capture his killer. The man was scum, but he was thorough scum.”

“Did it work?” Gaara muses, before realizing what he just said. “Of course not on you.”

“Not on Obito either,” you admit. “Yeah no, man’s like a ghost. It’s actually a little creepy… but I did learn something.”

“And what would that be?” Terumi-tono enquires. “Something about that power he uses?”

You nod. “For sure. It’s not automatic, and it’s not instantaneous. He uses the predictive abilities of his sharingan well, but there’s still a gap… he has to be materialized to attack, and he has to become immaterial to evade. Probably by transporting parts of his body into an alternate space-time region, like a partial hiraishin.”

“How did you determine this?” the Tsuchikage presses.

“He tried to pull Danzō into that spacetime,” you explain. “I managed to slip a modified exploding tag in the way… it didn’t kill him, but it clearly hurt him. Seriously, it’s just a matter of exploiting that timing.”

“And how long of a time are we talking here?” A-tono presses.

“A tiny fraction of a second,” you admit. “Almost negligible… but definitely there.”

“Despite the unfortunate setback,” Mifune-han muses, “we still have details to discuss.”

“With no representative from Konohagakure?” Gaara wonders aloud. “Isn’t that a problem?”

“It is,” you agree. “Even Danzō was technically a representative. So yeah, no, we don’t even have that anymore.”

“Is there any solution?” Terumi-han muses. “Surely there must be someone?”

>No, there isn’t anyone right now. We can make plans around presumptive nominees.

“I can always just go and ask,” you offer with a shrug, drawing more than one confused look. “I know you haven’t forgotten about the Hiraishin."

Left unsaid: two of their countries basically lost wars to it.

“It’s a strange feeling,” Terumi-han admits, “that a teenage girl being able to use the spacetime techniques of the Second and Fourth Hokages is one of the less-unusual things I’ve seen today.”

“For real,” you muse, “you can just take a recess until tomorrow. I picture Mifune-tono as the type to have accommodations prepared?”

Mifune-han bows politely. “Raishō-tono is not incorrect, though I had not anticipated actually needing to use them there are several rooms prepared on the lower floors.”

“Then I agree that waiting for a representative from Konoha will be in our best interests,” Gaara muses. “At the very least there should be someone from each of the ‘great’ villages present for the deliberations.”

With the vote passed unanimously, Karin returned to your safehouse, Yugito-han’s clone dispelled, and Danzō’s corpse sealed into a scroll, you teleport to the hiraishin marking at Ichiraku Ramen’s newly-rebuilt location, startling Ayame in the middle of the lunchtime rush as a crowd of mostly men who have been working all day slurp down their meals.

“Naori-san!” she greets you, straightening her apron. “You look… unusually serious today. Is everything alright?”

“I have news from the Kage Summit,” you tell her quickly. “Sorry to drop in, I’ll be back later for dinner.”

“Okay,” Ayame agrees awkwardly. “Sounds good then?”

At the jōnin ready station, which you had to ask for directions to find, you find mostly unfamiliar faces. Only one stands out as someone you know.

“Neji-han!” you greet the young jōnin politely. “I need your help.”

“With what, exactly?” he asks, reading your tense mood with reasonable accuracy. “Has something happened?”

“I need you and all the others here to gather the senior jōnin from the village,” you inform the room. “Including the head of the jōnin council. This is a crisis.”

“Go!” you bark.

As Neji begins to follow the other jōnin, who scatter at a former Akatsuki dressed in battle armor shouting orders at them, you grab him by the shoulder and add one special request. “And make sure Kakashi-han is here too.”

“So, what news justifies this sort of commotion?” Nara Shikaku-han, Shikamaru’s battle-scarred and scruffy-looking father, asks you calmly. Also present, per your request, is Kakashi-han, along with Guy-han, Yamato-han, and even some tokubetsu jōnin like Anko-sensei.

You set the scroll down on a low table in the center of the room. “This scroll contains the body of Shimura Danzō, former interim Hokage.”

There’s a murmur in the room, the atmosphere suddenly electrified in a low hum of nervous energy as you explain.

“He was caught trying to use a genjutsu to control Mifune-han, the arbitrator of the meeting,” you explain calmly. “Then, when Akatsuki crashed the meeting venue shortly after he was caught doing it, he tried to assassinate me and Ao, one of the Mizukage’s attendants. Failing in this he fled the scene, only to be tracked down by the current leader of Akatsuki, who tried to kill him.”

“Tried to?” Nara-han frowns. “What do you mean?”

“Yeah no, I wasn’t about to let that happen,” you admit, “I wanted the man to stand trial for his mistakes. I wanted to do things the right way. Instead Danzō killed himself… triggering a fūinjutsu that must have originally been intended to trap anyone who might have beaten him in a fair fight.”

“It was a series of mistakes on his part, culminating in a pointless death.”

“It’s troubling news, you’re right about that much,” Nara-han admits in a low, discontented growl.

Kakashi-han shakes his head. “How did someone manage to infiltrate the site?”

“You may have met him,” you explain. “He goes by the name Tobi… his spatial technique is on par with hiraishin, except he doesn’t need to leave a mark beforehand.”

“So it’s stronger than hiraishin?” Kakashi-han wonders aloud.

“No,” you shake your head, “I never said that. It’s just different… more flexible, but slower in every application.”

“In any event, Konoha needs to send a replacement delegate for Danzō.”

>I recommend Hatake Kakashi-han. He should have been interim Hokage anyway.

“Unlike Danzō and his ROOT, I have faith in the jōnin council’s general competence,” you admit.

“Unlike him in that you have faith in us where he didn’t,” Kakashi-han wonders aloud, “or in that you had no faith in him?”

“Yes,” you reply flatly. “The other Kages will reconvene tomorrow, if you have a candidate for me by morning I can teleport them back with me using hiraishin. I’d recommend either Kakashi-han or Nara-han, but ultimately it’s up to you.”

“We need no time to deliberate,” Nara-han replies curtly. “Kakashi-han was the candidate prior to Danzō raising an objection.”

“In that case,” you muse awkwardly, unused to official business being resolved that quickly, “you’re entitled to take two bodyguards, same as Danzō.”

“What happened to Danzō’s?” Guy-han asks curiously.

You shrug. “I’ll let you know when they find the bodies.”

You take the afternoon to breathe, and relax for a little while on the edge of town. Were things different you might have spent the afternoon up to your neck in one of the onsen that used to stand in the middle of town, but right now those are something of a lower priority for reconstruction. They’re behind even restaurants… in fact it’s a little amazing to think that Teuchi-han and Ayame-han’s place is even back in business.

A little before the dinner hour you find your way back there, settling down at the bar.

“What will you have?” Teuchi-han asks you loudly. “First one’s on the house of course!”

“You don’t need to do that,” you insist.

“It’s the least we can do!” Ayame-han counters. “I know Lord Shimura played it down, but you did fight against Pain by yourself… you saved thousands of lives and never even thought of a reward, did you?”

“Well, no, but...”

“So it’s a treat tonight,” Ayame-han insists sternly, “and I won’t hear any arguments about it. We may not have our full menu but we can and will show you some appreciation!”

“If it’s important to you,” you sigh, snapping your chopsticks, “then itadakimasu, I guess.”

As you’re eating, Kakashi-han sits down next to you. “Do you mind if we talk for a moment, Naori-san?”

“Not at all,” you shrug, slurping at your broth.

“I figured you should know I decided on two people to take with me,” Kakashi-han informs you calmly. “Uzuki Yūgao, whom I believe you’ve met, is a sensor. I’ll also be taking Yamato.”

“Familiar ‘faces’ from your time in ANBU?” you muse. “That’s fine. Sounds in line with everyone else’s teams. Can I ask how Tsuna-han is doing?”

“According to Shizune-san her life is out of danger… she may wake up any day now,” Kakashi-han shrugs. “Or it could take a while longer. What else can you tell me about the summit so far?”

“There’s going to be a union against Akatsuki,” you explain. “But yeah no, no idea who’s going to lead yet. We were… sort of interrupted.”

“By this ‘Tobi’ character,” Kakashi-han muses grimly.

You know that something is wrong, and you can immediately guess what it is based on Kakashi-han’s wide-eyed reaction to the words ‘Uchiha Obito’ when you said them.

“… you know him?”

Kakashi-han is still too stunned to answer you, so you turn him on his barstool and grab him by the shoulders.

“Kakashi-han, look at me,” you insist. “Seriously, I can tell you’re in shock here, but I need you to talk to me right now, okay? Walk me through what you’re thinking.”

“Obito...” he begins, still obviously struggling with something. “Obito was… my teammate… my friend. He died on a mission, we were saving Rin, our… our other teammate. There was a cave-in, he was crushed. He saved my life.”

“His right side was crushed?” you ask calmly. “Was it his right side?”

Kakashi-han nods slowly. “That’s why he left me his left eye. But I saw more rock fall on him, the cave collapsed completely. How could he possibly still be alive?”

“Evidently the real Uchiha Madara took him in and trained him,” you frown. “So no, yeah, I agree it’s ridiculous that either of them should still be alive, but from what I can tell this ‘Obito’ is the genuine article… the story, the eyes, and the scars all match up, and Danzō seemed to recognize a technique that he thought only Madara could have passed on.”

“How could Madara have been alive?” Kakashi continues to grapple with what you’re telling him.

“Obito mentioned the Gedō Mazō,” you explain. “The statue we were sealing tailed beasts into… Madara must have taken a sample of Senju Hashirama-tono’s flesh and implanted it into himself to awaken the Rinnegan.”

“It checks out with what little anyone knows about how that process supposedly works.”

“And now he’s with Akatsuki...” Kakashi-han shakes his head in disbelief. “Not only that, but he’s the one who’s leading them… who ordered them to attack and destroy Konohagakure itself?”

“Yeah no, I don’t know if that last part is true,” you admit. “I’d left the organization by then, remember?”

“Then I need you to do me another favor,” Kakashi-han turns to you. “Can you take me to speak with your sensei… tonight? Before the meeting scheduled for tomorrow? There’s something that I need to know before I decide what I need to do, in the position of interim Hokage.”

“I agree,” you incline your head politely. “If you’re positive that this is something you have to do before the meeting, then tonight is the only time. We’ll leave immediately.”

“Immediately?” Ayame-han repeats, seemingly disappointed, before realizing that maybe she shouldn’t have said anything.

“It’s alright,” Kakashi-han sighs, noticing the sudden awkwardness, “it was my mistake for holding such an important conversation in public… please just forget you heard anything.”

“Since most of it went over my head,” Ayame-han replies, “I think that can be arranged.”

You thank Ayame-han politely for her understanding and her cooperation, she thanks you for your continued patronage in these difficult times, before you teleport with Kakashi-han to Amegakure to speak with Konan-sensei. You find her seated quietly in the little room adjacent to her new office within the village, a semi-circular space with a high ceiling that’s open 180 degrees to the surrounding cityscape.

You’ve caught her listening quietly to the evening rain, with gentle, rolling thunder in the distance, sipping at a cup of chilled sake.

“Sorry to interrupt,” you apologize, sitting next to your sensei in seiza. “But yeah, no, a lot’s happened in the last few hours.”

“Enough that you brought Kakashi-san along with you,” Konan-sensei observes calmly. “Tell me about it.”

“The man calling himself Tobi attacked the summit,” you explain. “Danzō tried several times to kill me, and ended up using a suicide technique to try and seal both of us. It didn’t work, obviously, so now Danzō is dead and Akatsuki is now at war with the Kages.”

“I’m glad to hear that Shimura Danzō is dead,” Konan-han admits tersely. “The man richly deserved it, however it’s bad news that Tobi has decided to make such a bold move.”

“He was planning to use a particularly powerful sharingan on you,” you add, “belonging to Uchiha Shisui.”

“Kotoamatsukami?” Kakashi-han asks, stunned. “How did this come up?”

“Danzō took one of Shisui-han’s eyes,” you explain. “I took it back to keep it from Obito.”

“Obito?” Konan-han wonders.

Kakashi-han is just as confused. “Wait, so Danzō is the one who murdered Shisui-san?”

“Tobi’s real name is Uchiha Obito,” you reply, “and yes. And like I said, I have Shisui’s eye. I assume given how that whole situation went that Itachi-han took the other to his grave.”

“Anyhow,” you continue, “Konan-sensei, Kakashi-han has something he needs to ask you.”

“I’ve been named Danzō’s replacement as interim Hokage,” Kakashi-han prefaces himself, “and given everything that’s happened, I need to ask you something about the attack on our village… if you’re willing to answer.”

“Of course,” Konan-sensei asks quietly. “You wish to know whether it was this ‘Obito’ who ordered the attack.”

“Yes,” Kakashi-han nods curtly.

“He did,” Konan-sensei confirms, “though Nagato was committed to the act as well. I also participated willingly, though for my own reasons.”

“Explain.”

Konan-sensei sets aside her empty cup. “I understood Nagato’s pain better than anyone else. I was there the whole time… it was Naori who changed my heart, but Nagato had no students, no one who could put him back on the path Jiraiya-sensei had hoped for us.”

“So I used the planned attack to orchestrate a meeting between him, Uzumaki Naruto, and Naori. I had hoped that things would work out the way they did… ‘Pain’ got his point across, so his life and death were not in vain. But he was also reminded of the man he once was, and got to be that man again at the end.”

“I wish he were still alive, but unfortunately… I saw no future where that could be the case.”

“I understand,” Kakashi-han admits calmly. “That confirms what I need to do, so thanks for that.”

“You’re planning to declare this man an enemy of your village,” your sensei guesses correctly.

Kakashi-han nods. “That’s right.”

“Did you know this man?” she asks.

“Once,” Kakashi-han admits. “A long time ago.”

“Do you believe that ordering his death is something you can be comfortable with?”

The question seems to put Kakashi-han on his back foot. “What do you mean?”

“If he was your friend, I mean,” Konan-sensei clarifies.

It takes Kakashi-han a few moments to reply. “I don’t like it, but if Obito truly launched an attack which totally destroyed our village, then he’s changed since when I knew him. At a certain point I have to face that fact, and act in a way that the Obito I knew would have respected.”

“For what it’s worth,” Konan-han muses, “I believe that to be the best way of thinking about it… to a degree. What I have been more wary of lately is the fine line between respect and projection.”

“I understand,” Kakashi-han nods quietly. “I’ll take your advice to heart… thank you.”

“Of course,” Konan-han replies, flipping over two more small cups from the little tray they were sitting on. “I haven’t been the most gracious host so far… you’re welcome to stay for a little while.”

“I appreciate the offer,” Kakashi-han replies, “but...”

He glances at you, and quickly interprets the sharp look.

“… I only have time for one drink,” Kakashi concludes the thought.

After taking Kakashi-han back to Konohagakure, you return back to your hideout and rest. To your relief Karin and Yugito-han have caught Fū up on events in her absence, and all three are about ready to sleep as well, so you’re able to simply fall into your futon and pass out.

The next morning you teleport back to Konohagakure again with a shadow clone of Yugitō-han and Karin, and set up an array of six hiraishin shuriken on the ground in a ring large enough to comfortably fit six people. Soon after, Kakashi-han arrives with two ANBU: Uzuki Yūgao-han still wears the arm guards and elbow gloves she wears in the Konoha ANBU service, but has abandoned her mask and now wears a standard green flak jacket. Yamato wears a similarly modified uniform somewhere halfway between ANBU and regular forces.

“Good to see you again, Yūgao-han,” you greet the duo, “Yamato-han. I assume Kakashi-han informed you of the situation?”

“To the degree necessary,” Yamato-han muses.

“How… actually do you all know each other, anyway?” you ask as you usher them into the middle of the circle. “Former ANBU comrades?”

“Yes,” Yūgao-han tells you. “Since I was thirteen, shortly after the Nine-Tails attacked our village… I’m glad that you asked me to accompany you, Kakashi-taichō.”

“It’s not...” Kakashi-han rebuts, as though they’ve had this discussion before. “Nevermind.”

“So what does Hiraishin feel like in practice?” Yamato-han asks you. “Does it feel...”

With no warning all three of the ‘first-timers’ waver on their feet after their surroundings abruptly change.

“Minato-sensei… how did he do that?” Kakashi-han wonders aloud.

“You get used to it,” you admit.

“Adjutants in the back row,” you explain, gesturing to the hidden benches where Karin, Yugitō-han, and the others from each village are supposed to sit and observe. “Your table is that one… seems like they got the blood cleaned off it, that’s nice.”

“Blood?” Yūgao-han repeats.

Karin nods curtly. “When Danzō died there was a lot of chest blood.”

The other Kages filter in over the next few minutes, exchanging calm chatter and the barest pleasantries before seating themselves for the second day’s session.

“I would like to take a moment,” Mifune-han begins, “to welcome Hatake Kakashi-dono to these proceedings, representing Konohagakure. Kakashi-dono, would you like to say a few words?”

“I would,” Kakashi-han replies, somewhat awkwardly. “As the interim Hokage I understand that none of you planned for me to be here… it wasn’t my plan either. However I have every intention of serving in the role to the best of my capability. Raishō-dono has caught me up on yesterday’s events, so I look forward to getting started.”

“Before we do anything else,” you muse, “I think we need to make it clear who this union is meant to include, and what is expected of those who join.”

“At its core the union will have to consist of the five Kages and their respective hidden villages,” Gaara replies, his tone even but his face half-hidden behind his hands as he rests his chin. “The final decision for this will have to rest with the daimyō of each nation.”

“If one of the daimyō disagrees, the union is over before it begins,” Ōnoki-tono frowns behind his desk. “The entire point behind the gesture is to demonstrate unity, at least on this one issue. Without that unity the gesture becomes pointless.”

“You’re still thinking in terms of competition between villages,” Gaara narrows his eyes. “I thought we had gotten past that?”

“Far from it,” Ōnoki-tono replies curtly. “And the daimyō will likely agree. Any alliance between nations will only be temporary, because doing so benefits all of the nations involved. The moment that alliance becomes too much trouble it’ll be broken again without warning… such is the way of the shinobi nations of this world.”

“When was it, I wonder, that you as a leader started speaking of the way things are and stopped speaking of the way they should be?” Gaara counters.

“Oof,” you hear Kurotsuchi-han react behind her curtain.

“Yeah no, that’s great for you,” you interject before Ōnoki can recover his wits, “but the smaller villages don’t have massive standing militaries. Many of them are only getting by, so what are they expected to contribute?”

“If I bring this to them, they’ll be asking for sure.”

“Your power has been well-noted,” A-tono admits, “and would be welcome on the battlefield. But the smaller villages’ potential to contribute is doubtful.”

“Oh?” you muse. “Is that so?”

“Try not to take it personally,” Ōnoki-tono smirks. “But why would we even concern ourselves with such lesser forces?”

You narrow your eyes. “Uzushiogakure.”

He narrows his eyes back at you. “What was that?”

“The name of my ancestral homeland,” you insist. “Your so-called ‘great’ villages took a very different attitude back then, didn’t they? When they teamed up to raze Uzushiogakure to the ground in a sneak attack?”

“And what is your point?”

“My point,” you declare, “is that I don’t care much for your tone right now, old man.”
>1/2
>>
>>4463726
“Seriously, I’m here to do a job,” you continue, glaring at the Tsuchikage. “That job is to represent the smaller shinobi villages, and to inform them of the proceedings… if they choose to contribute to this alliance after that they’ll need to know what’s expected of them.”

“Do you have a problem with us having that conversation?”

After staring back at you for a moment, the Tsuchikage relents in a huff. “Fine then. Let’s have a conversation.”

Thank you,” you counter gruffly, settling into your seat.

“We’ll have to come up with a force organization structure,” Terumi-tono begins, “and arrange to pool our intelligence resources.”

“No matter how we organize the lower levels, aside from segregating our own forces, there will always be a situation where citizens of one nation will be answerable to authorities from a different nation,” Kakashi-han muses. “So it’s important that shinobi from each village are placed into positions of delegated command.”

“That way we can at least avoid the appearance of unfairness,” Gaara muses. “The decision seems to be between totally parallel organization and completely blended.”

“I propose the formation of ‘great battle’ regiments,” A-tono begins. “Large combined units under the leadership of qualified individuals from all participating nations, based around specific skillsets and battle styles. Concentrate our villages' fighting power.”

“In this instance, I would suggest an emphasis on unity,” Mifune-han nods along. “Perhaps through the use of shared insignia?”

“Sharing intelligence is already a tall order,” Ōnoki counters. “I believe we should at least consider maintaining parallel command structures for each village's forces.”

>I agree with A-tono. We should do everything we can to minimize the bickering and politicking for the time being.
>I actually agree with Ōnoki-tono. The best way to prevent problems is to avoid them entirely in the first place.

“Yeah no, consider this alternative for a moment,” you offer your own proposal. “What about a smaller series of mixed-nationality units using complimentary techniques?”

“Explain further,” Terumi-han muses, evidently interested.

“Every village selects its three-man teams carefully,” you continue, “for example, including a medical shinobi. Each of us here brought a sensory-type as well. So why not apply that same logic to larger units?”

“Let’s treat this as an exercise,” Kakashi-han suggests. “Were there to be battle regiments divided by combat style we would have regiments for short, mid, and long-range combat, with maybe a fourth for short-to-mid range. We could also use a fifth main battle division for specialized hiden techniques.”

“We would also have divisions for surprise attacks, logistics and medical treatment, sensory techniques and intelligence-gathering, and analysis and communications,” Terumi-tono adds.

“So four or five main battle divisions with four supporting divisions,” Mifune-han summarizes. “Naori-dono, if you would be so kind?”

“I’d propose company-level organization instead,” you begin to lay out your counterproposal. “Made up of four sections each, with three being short, mid, and long-range combat sections. The fourth would be a ‘headquarters’ section made up of sensors, medical shinobi, communications specialists, fūinjutsu users, and some number of specialists in hiden or surprise attack techniques.”

“So yeah, each of these companies could act independently or in cooperation with other companies, organized into divisions,” you continue. “Five ‘battle divisions’, and one ‘logistics division’ dispersed more widely, that concentrates on support techniques, escort duties, command and control, medical treatment, analysis, rapid response, and all that stuff.”

“I say we go with that one,” Terumi-han declares.

“It is an interesting concept,” Gaara carefully admits, “having the additional benefit of encouraging members of the smaller sections to interact, perhaps even train together to draw out their best effect in combat.”

“It has one additional benefit,” Kakashi-han adds, “one which no one has mentioned yet… Obito was the one who declared war on us, which implies that he thinks he has the ability to actually wage that war.”

“I’ve absolutely been thinking the same,” you admit. “The problem is we don’t know how he plans to do it.”

“Exactly,” Kakashi-han agrees. “The smaller force organization allows us to tailor our strategy and response to whatever method he chooses to employ.”

“There’s also one more team which will be necessary,” Terumi-han muses. “A team to protect the daimyō. Someone who could facilitate moving them between secret locations, to prevent them from being used as leverage against us.”
>1/3
>>
>>4465033
“Yeah no,” you interrupt, “I’m not doing that.”

“Why not?” Terumi-han asks curtly. “Your abilities are perfect for the job!”

“Because Akatsuki,” you insist. “I’ve personally killed one daimyō, and overthrown two more. Sure, the daimyō of This and That are almost like my wards, and the daimyō of Snow is a friend, and the queen of Rōran is almost like a sister or a mother, it’s kinda hard to say… but they’re the exceptions.”

“Look, I’d protect those four with my life, but that’s only because I care about them as people. And the others probably won’t want a known assassin in charge of their defense.”

“She’s bringing up good points,” Mifune-han muses.

“Thank you!” you interject, throwing in your last thoughts on the matter and hoping that it’ll amount to a decision.

“Since you mentioned it,” Ōnoki smirks, “I suppose it’s only fair that you head up that endeavor.”

“The daimyō would likely prefer that their security be ensured by a Kage,” Gaara agrees.

“Very well,” Terumi-tono inlines her head politely. “I shall humbly accept the duty.”

“It also makes sense for a Kage to be in charge of each Division,” Kakashi-han adds.

“I’ll have to decline,” Ōnoki bows out, “though I can recommend my son-in-law Kitsuchi to the position in my place.”

“Very well,” Mifune-han nods, as he spreads a scroll across his desk. “Which of the Kages will lead overall?”

“I believe that Terumi-tono’s position as guard to the daimyō leaves A-tono as the only option from yesterday,” you admit.

With no opposition, Mifune-han scrawls out your decisions. The Raikage will be the overall commander, with Nara Shikaku serving as head of intelligence, Shizune-han serving as head of the dedicated medical company, and Yamanaka Inoichi serving as coordinator for all battlefield communications. Gaara, Kakashi-han, Kitsuchi, and Mifune-han will all serve as Division Captains, as well as commanders of each Division’s own First Company.

Below that, qualified jōnin drawn from lists provided by each participating village will be considered for the positions of forty-five Company Commanders, each in command of around a thousand shinobi. Some of these Companies in each Division will be more heavily weighted towards a specific elemental release, with each of the basic five being represented. Beyond that, organization of the individual Companies will be left to the discretion of each Division Captain.
>2/3
>>
>>4465037
“As for the ‘rapid response’ team,” Mifune-han muses, “I believe there is only one logical choice for that duty, and that we all know who it is.”

“I accept,” you bow politely. “Assuming there are no objections.”

There are none of course, since Mifune-han is absolutely correct: knowing Hiraishin means that no other living person could possibly be better at getting around multiple battlefields quickly than you. And more to the point, everyone here does know it.

“There’s one Captain position remaining,” Mifune-han continues. “I believe it should be open to a shinobi from one of the smaller villages. Thoughts?”

“Natsuhi-han,” you reply immediately.

The others in the room look at you awkwardly.

“The current ‘Hoshikage’ of Hoshigakure,” you clarify. “One of the last proficient users of the ‘star chakra’ techniques, and an experienced jōnin. That’s who I’d offer it to first.”

“I have no objections,” Gaara shrugs passively.

“Now, we come to the most important goal,” A-tono declares. “The way we intend to keep the remaining jinchūriki out of Akatsuki’s hands. I think it’s obvious that they should remain removed from the battlefield until such time as the enemy is dealt with.”

“Hang on!” Yugitō-han protests.

“The Raikage has a point,” Gaara admits quietly. “I doubt Akatsuki could completely destroy our combined forces, even with six tailed beasts… especially since we know that Naori-san is capable of fighting their leader to a standstill on her own. But if they get hold of the remaining three then they win anyway. So that will likely be their goal.”

“Not you too, Gaara-kun!”

>I agree with the Raikage. The strategic picture is clear on this one.

“Just use shadow clones,” you reply flatly.

A-tono turns his head. “Excuse me?”

“Just use shadow clones,” you repeat your words exactly, only slower for the idiot. “Seriously, grandpa Tobirama’s probably screaming right now, it’s literally the kinda thing he invented the technique for. Besides, I know Yugitō-han better than to expect her to sit still while everyone else in the damn world fights and dies on her account.”

“Kakashi-tono, I think you know Naruto-kun better than that too.”

Kakashi-han closes his eyes for a moment. “That’s definitely true, isn’t it? And I think that Tsunade-sama would be arguing the same right now.”

“So just let them use shadow clones,” you insist, “same as I do with Yugitō-han, who need I remind you isn’t actually here right now.”

There’s a long pause before A-tono makes a stunning admission.

“… B never learned it.”

… there are people who don’t learn the shadow clone technique?

“… so have him learn it?” you muse. “Seriously, it’s not hard.”

“I think that this solution is reasonable,” Gaara agrees.

“Then I’ll confirm the plan with B then,” A-tono sighs. “As Supreme Commander, I will compile a list of ideal spots where we can defend their real bodies. In turn I will expect a list of qualified jōnin from each village to serve as company commanders.”

“We should also choose a physical location for our intelligence officers to meet,” Kakashi-han suggests. “I would offer my own village, however we’re still in the process of rebuilding it.”

You abruptly teleport to Hōzuki castle, and Ryūzetsu glances up at you.

“Can I help you?”

“Would you mind if some representatives from the five Kages come here and discuss an intelligence-sharing scheme?” you ask her.

She nods. “Since you asked so politely, no. I don’t think that’d be a problem.”

“Great,” you smile. “Thanks, that’s going to make things so much simpler.”

Then you teleport back to the Land of Iron.

“Ryūzetsu-han, warden of the prison at Hōzuki castle, has offered the castle as a neutral meeting place,” you suggest. “It’s a little more convenient than the Land of Iron, and if we keep meeting here too often we’ll become predictable.”

There are a few more details to iron out, but for the most part things are ready to be handed to the daimyō and the smaller villages for their approval. By your birthday, the morning of which you spend with Konan-sensei back in the village, you’ve heard good news. The Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, and Lightning daimyō have all reluctantly approved, and you’ll have participation from Takigakure, Kusagakure, Amegakure, and Hoshigakure. Natsuhi-han has also agreed to serve as a Division Captain, which is great news.

You hear that among your friends there are some predictable appointments: Temari and Kurotsuchi have both been made company commanders for First Division’s wind-user company and a company in Third Division respectively. Baki from Suna also has a company command, as do Darui, Kankurō, Neji, and even Kagerō-han from Hoshi.

But before the individual companies can assemble, there’s one outstanding issue: the question of current candidates for chūnin.

That issue falls to you.

OMAKE: THE AME CHUNIN EXAMS

Turnout is good, though the current crop of candidates seems unusually miserable. True, the rain and the mud may have something to do with it. The hastily-constructed shelter on the outskirts of a former battlefield near Amegakure isn’t exactly welcoming either. But also…

“This is gonna be cake compared to last time!” Naruto-kun declares, the first one to approach your desk.

Sasuke shuts his eyes. “It does seem a little arbitrary that we’re even here.”

… of course, the other candidates are also dismayed that these two are here. You’re thankful that Tsunade-han is awake again, but this is a rather odd decision for her to make.

With them is a familiar face.

“So like, could you two not totally embarrass yourselves?” Hinoko frowns. “Everyone’s staring you know.”

“Here you are,” you offer the three of them matching scrolls, each secretly marked with your hiraishin formula… and secretly, an excuse for you to practice keeping track of a hundred and fifty markings all at once.

You raise your voice to speak to all the candidates as you hand Naruto, Sasuke, and Hinoko their set. “You are to keep these scrolls in your possession at all times! Do not lose them! Theft of another candidate’s scroll is also strictly prohibited, on pain of me beating you to within an inch of your worthless life!”

“Candidates are also required to sign a liability waiver!” you add. “The ground itself here is so steeped in poison that if you stay too long in it you will die! Don’t eat anything or drink anything other than fresh rainwater, or you will take in the poison and die! Despite my best efforts and the efforts of the watchers posted along the fencelines some of you may die anyway, so if you’re not okay with that don’t sign the waiver or take a scroll, just turn around and leave now!”

Also in this round are the two brats from the Cloud village who thought they could pick a fight with you, with a third teammate you don’t recognize. They take their scrolls and sign their waivers without hesitation.

There’s also the trio from Suna that includes Gaara’s shy student, back again for more, as well as… you think his name is Konohamaru? The brat that got in trouble with Gaara and his siblings on that day in Konoha years ago now.

“You’re taller than I remember,” you muse, handing him a scroll. “Good luck, pipsqueak.”

“Pipsqueak!?” he retorts. “My name is...”

“I’m teasing you,” you interrupt. “Try not to be so high-strung?”

“… oh. Sorry.”

Once the candidates are through the gate and standing on the concrete platform on the other side, you explain the tests.

“There will be three stages to this exam!” you declare. “The third stage will be a single-elimination bracket, proctored by me, Raishō Naori. The second stage will be a written examination, also proctored by me, Raishō Naori. The first stage is an obstacle course through the ruins of five towns, you’ll be heading towards Amegakure proper in the distance. There’s a large tower on the outskirts with a red light on top, you can see it from here. Try to avoid full immersion in any of the puddles, or the mist… that’s all poison. And like I said stealing scrolls is prohibited, but basically anything else is fair game.”

“Anyone finishing outside the first fifty candidates will be disqualified!” you declare.

“Wait,” an older candidate from Iwa muses. “Fifty isn’t divisible by three, so does that mean...”

“Starting now!” you declare.

Then you teleport to the top of the tower, where you have a telescope and a massive radio setup sheltered under a canopy so that you can watch the show from a distance.

As it becomes clear that some candidates have either been eliminated or are in danger of dying from the poison, you use the hiraishin to reach them and teleport them to the first aid shelter, where they’re treated with antidotes and medical ninjutsu for any other wounds they may have taken. It’s surprising, only three of them end up dying… and that’s only because they were attacked by a team from Kirigakure that seems not to have gotten the memo that you’re all going to be in this together for a while. So you make a careful note of that… not that they’re going to finish on time anyway.

Once the first fifty reach the goal, you raise a barrier around the entry to the tower and teleport the remaining candidates on the field to safety.

Naruto, Sasuke, and Hinoko are here… the former two seemingly impressed with the latter’s performance, though she’s clearly winded. Gaara’s student and her team are here as well, and surprisingly Konohamaru’s team made it. The Cloud ninja as well, no surprises there.

“Congratulations!” you smile deviously. “You survived… now, time to open the gate to the tower and finish the test! Oh yeah, by the way… it takes three of those scrolls I had you bring along to open it.”

“Wait,” the same genin from Iwagakure realizes. “I’m the only one from my team that made it...”

“Yeah no, sucks to be you then,” you shrug. “Maybe instead of sacrificing your slower teammates you should’ve worked to pick off weaker teams and thin the competition, or look for other idiots like you who split up.”

“As a chūnin you need to be ready to lose comrades, but what you did was a betrayal of your comrades' trust. In a leader, that's inexcusable."
>2/?

>>4466317
“Wasn’t that a little harsh?” Karui, the red-head from Kumogakure, wonders aloud once the thirty-nine candidates who actually made it through the first exam are inside the tower. “You didn’t say beforehand that they needed their whole team. That’s pretty dirty.”

Eleven shinobi who finished the race without their whole team ended up going home.

“Even dirtier,” you smirk, “I never said it at all.”

Sasuke chuckles to himself. “So it’s like that, huh?”

“Wait, what?” Naruto wonders aloud.

“Yeah,” Karui agrees. “What he said.”

“I never said all three scrolls had to belong to the same starting team,” you shrug. “If they’d just sucked it up and banded together some of them could still have passed. Making mistakes as a leader is okay. Giving up isn’t.”

“Take your seats.”

Already waiting on the desks are the exam papers… which you have to explain at the candidates’ glassy-eyed surprise at the contents.

“This exam has fifty questions,” you explain, starting with the obvious. “Some are easy, some aren’t. Pick one and answer it.”

“Wait, just one?” a candidate from Kiri asks skeptically. “Any one?”

“Any one,” you nod. “Oh yeah, and if any two candidates submit the same answer both will fail. You have two minutes, starting now.”

“Wait…” Karui begins to protest.

“No talking,” you interrupt her. “You have one minute and fifty-four seconds.”

At ninety seconds remaining you begin to stalk your way around the room.

At sixty seconds you set off a small explosion in the hallway to startle the candidates.

“No talking!” you shout. “Sit down and finish the test!”

At thirty seconds you use a wide-area genjutsu to make the candidates believe that there’s poison gas descending from the air vents in the ceiling.

By the end of the two minutes most of them are at their wits’ end, which is of course exactly what you wanted: two minutes of hell to mess with their concentration and their decisionmaking processes.

“Pens down!” you declare. “Stage two is over, hand your papers in.”

An incredible number of candidates end up going home, leaving you with sixteen finalists. Not a bad number, honestly. This was intended to have a good number of finalists, since this will be the last exam before the formation of the various companies and it’s the first exams in… well, actually, ever… to have all five of the ‘great’ villages participating.

Konohamaru and Gaara’s student are the only two from their teams… Sasuke, Naruto, and Hinoko all passed, as did Omoi and Karui, along with several others.

Once the failures leave, mostly due to either not answering any question given the harsh conditions, or due to answering the same easy questions, you explain the point of the test.

“This round tested a few things,” you explain, “first being your ability to either gather information or to intuit an answer that would let you pass. Importantly, those of you who saw through the test structure were guaranteed a pass.”

“What does that mean?” Hinoko demands.

“Naruto-kun drew a picture of a dog,” you explain, showing Naruto’s actually rather good sketch. “Technically it’s an answer, and no one else did the same, so I have to accept it.”

“It’s Akamaru when he was a puppy!” Naruto-kun flashes a thumbs-up.

Hinoko looks like she’s about to have an aneurysm, while Sasuke looks like that’s about what he expected to happen.

“Literally how!?” Karui demands.

“When did I say the answer had to be correct?” you smirk.

She stares at you in shock. “What in the actual shit?”

“Yeah no, intelligence and skill are both good things to have,” you insist. “But so are intuition, creativity, and the ability to solve problems under duress. That’s why I set off the explosion before, and used genjutsu on you all to ramp up the stress. Anyone who can’t think clearly and quickly under poor conditions won’t make it as a shinobi.”

“I dunno if you’re all going to end up on the battlefield,” you admit, “but so far, the sixteen of you left here have shown that you’d do well on the battlefield or as an auxiliary within your own villages.”

“You’re free to go. Accommodations are located in this tower, tomorrow we’ll have the public finals. But I’ll be recommending all of you who made it this far for promotion.”

“Congratulations, and good luck.”
