You are Gelle, a slime in recent possession of a sense of self. In your quest to sate your hunger you came across a boy reborn from another world who asked for your help in defeating a ‘demon king’. You agreed then traveled eastward to the town of Barton, where you stocked up on supplies and set forth to acquire more strength from all you devour. Unfortunately, recent events have shown such gluttony carries with it considerable risk, as the rebirth of Eliza, the thief and murderer you acquired true sapience from, has proven. Now back at camp, you’ve reunited with the miraculously reincarnated boy, though it seems his resurrection has come at a cost…

~~~
“Uh… um, m-ma’am? A-are you o-ok?” He peeks a glance at your face before turning even more red and begins frantically looking anywhere but down.
‘…He doesn’t know who I am,’ you feel your face go slack as you process this information.
“M-miss… uh… Ms. Elf? H-how do you know my name? I-if you… *are* an elf I mean, I’m… k-kinda n-new to the area and I don’t really…uh—"
‘…He doesn’t know what I am,’ you briefly glance down at yourself. Oh, that’s right. You’re still in your ‘ice elf’ disguise.
“Um… m-ma’am?” He lightly taps your shoulder and you immediately spring off him like he’s a living flame.
“Oh, I’m.. uh… I’m not usually the one at a loss for words here, haha…” You give your best awkward smile while you scream inwardly, ‘WHAT IS GOING ON? WHY ARE YOU JUST GRINNING AT HIM, YOU IDIOT?!’
“Ok, well… um,” he’s speaking to you while staring off to the side, “since you know my n-name, and that I, uh… died… um... were you, uh… sent by Ankou or something, like… as my… guide?” His tone sounds hopeful.
What do you do?
First of all, revert to base slimegirl.
Just get it out of the way.
Let him freak out until he calms down a bit and say that we are the Chosen of Globule tasked to defeat the Demon King, and that we came here to find the Outlander, and then ask if that's who he is.
You take in a deep breath then say, "I'm going to do something that may shock you, but please know I mean you no harm."
"Um... ok, I mean...ha... you've been kind of shocking alreaAAA—" His voice rises in pitch as he watches your body dissolve away into a simple droplet slime, "—AAOkaaay... You're a... slime?"
"Yes," you reply as you change further into your regular humanoid form, "This is what I truly am."
"Huh, a slime girl," he scratches his head in thought, "That... is a bit more exotic than an elf admittedly," He quickly flicks his gaze down your body when he thinks you're not looking and wipes the bit of blood that trickles down from his nose, "So... um, aren't you kinda cold?" You stare him in the eyes for several seconds before bursting into giggles at his statement, which only seems to confuse him further. You laugh and laugh until tears start forming in your eyes. You eventually manage to stop, dab the tears and face Tatsuo with a determined expression.
"We need to discuss some things."
You tell him everything. Your first meeting, the birchtwee, the thief and how you stopped her. You tell him of Barton, NEETs, the skinks, how you watched him grow stronger. You then tell him about the squid, about Eliza, you tell Tatsuo how you failed him.
"And that... leads us to where we are now..." You're choking up quite a bit at this point, "I'm so happy you're alive..." You whisper, "...even if you don't remember me..." You finally break down into a sob, "I'm just so happy to have you back..."
Tatsuo listens intently then tentatively places his hand on your shoulder, "...Sounds like we've been through a lot together in such a short time, huh?"
You hitch your breath in a very undignified manner, "Y-yeah. I'd say that's definitely the case," you smile at him.
He smiles back at you briefly, before he furrows his brow as his face takes on a serious expression, "I think I believe what you've told me, Ms. Gelle. I mean, I've apparently got 'RPG' powers so respawning actually seems to fit the theme pretty well," he stops and turns away in thought for a moment before looking back to you, "...You tell me that as a slime you need to eat things to get stronger. I understand that, it works that way for humans too, but," his gaze grows in intensity before he closes his eyes and lets out a sigh, "...I guess what I'm getting at is, do you still intend on eating people again after all this?"
Oh. It's this question again.
What do you do?
On the one hand, if we ever have to kill people, thats a free meal. on the other, if we only eat people willing to attack us and Tatsuo, we're going to become an asshole again. Not to mention, the primary bonuses from eating people are memories and intelligence; We are no longer an idiot, and random memories aren't that important atm. HOWEVER, eating people is a tool that can be used; what if we come across someone who has been murdered? Eating them would let us learn the identity of the killer; what if the only person with the knowledge to stop the evil doomsday device is the bad guy, and they refuse to share? Extremely long-winded justification of:
>"I won't eat any people unless I really, desperately need to."
And then give examples similar to above.
>>
Damn just read the previous thread and got caught up. I think the combination of semi recent personality and gaining enough mass to create an entire second self allowed said personality to spill off. Once Eliza was in control of her own body we seemed to be a lot more empathetic and worried about Tatsuo so I feel like we got drained of the majority of Eliza's influence, as we didn't seem to feel particularly close to him after consuming Eliza. Fond, yes, but I felt we were more callous.
As for how to weaken a personality's influence in the future, it might just be a willpower thing, and become significantly easier as our identity of self solidifies, it could be a personality's influence wanes over time like digesting a meal, with some personalities taking longer than others.
Either way, consuming anything sapient then consuming a large mass all at once is a combination we really need to avoid going forward. Unfortunately if mostly human sized is our cap, consuming any humans likely creates that combination all in one.
So yeah, I think consuming humans should be off the table, with maybe the only exception being if it's the only way to stop Tatsuo from being killed, but even then we can likely just give them enough of an acidic burn to stun them long enough to kill them by other means.
"I don't want to create anything like 'Eliza' ever again..." you reply, then return his gaze, "I can't promise you that I'll 'never' do it again; there could be a time when I have no other choice, either for my own or... your personal safety. I can say that I really, really, really, really, don't want to, though."
He holds your stare for a moment then relaxes into a smile, "I'd say that sounds more than fair," he then awkwardly holds out his right hand, "So... um, I know we've technically already gotten to know each other, but it still feels like I haven't properly introduced myself yet..." He takes his left hand and sticks his thumb out towards his chest, "Tatsuo. Tatsuo Maeda. A NEET reincarnated for the express purpose of destroying the Demon King and all his lackeys!"
You give him a warm smile and grasp his outstretched hand, "Gelle. A slime 'Chosen of Globule' tasked to defeat the 'demon king' and to accompany the Outlander."
"Let's take care of each other, ok?" he returns your smile with a goofy looking grin of his own.
"Hmm... let's!" You shake on it.
"So... uh, what do you think we should do now?"
"I think I need some rest for the time being..." You answer, "I need some time to mull a few things over."
"Ok, well... I'll be over here by the fire if you need me!" He replies cheerfully.
You nod and start to leave, but not before turning around to give the NEET boy a tender hug.
"G-gah—" His face is buried in your chest and you can only giggle as it reddens.
Satisfied, you release him from your embrace and head over to the makeshift tent you erected before venturing off to the skink den. 'Hmm... How did Eliza manage to escape? Was it her intelligence?' You think back on the things you remember eating, 'In that case, why hasn't the fairy emerged, or even the imp? Was it their size, were they absorbed too quickly while Eliza had to be digested?' You pause your thoughts here for a moment, 'do personalities I eat get 'digested', or do they just hang around inside me forever?' You then consider your current frame of mind, 'After Eliza... 'escaped'... I was devastated over what she did to Tatsuo... I'm still reeling from it now, even. I don't believe I felt that strongly towards him before. In fact, I think I considered him as more of a useful tool than anything else...' You grimace, 'was that... Eliza's influence? The fact that she's gone now... are these new feelings *my* actual thoughts?' You ask yourself the question you asked when you first received full sapience, 'Who... am I?' You receive no answer.
Frustrated, you decide that this train of thought is proving fruitless, and so your mind gravitates towards the topic of the squid you've recently consumed. You're a little hesitant to think about it, being so closely associated and perhaps even partially responsible for Eliza's release, but you decide that since she's gone now, it wouldn't hurt to test if you've gained any abilities from it...
You try to summon any abilities you've acquired from the Giant Squid. You raise your arm and out jettisons a thick, inky black substance from a small sac that forms at the base of the palm of your hand and paints the side of a tree jet black. New technique acquired! Ink Trap. 'Doesn't seem to cause any damage, maybe I could use it to blind an enemy or something..." You think to yourself.
You continue to experiment with the squid's ink ability, trying to propel the ink with enough force to do some real damage. As you do so, a siphon forms at the base of your palm and lets loose a dense stream of water that knocks you flat on your back and has enough force to punch a hole right through the tree trunk you were aiming at. 'That's more like it!' You think to yourself. You experiment further with the siphons, finding you can form them pretty much anywhere on your body, and they can even output enough force to propel you in the air for a while, though this is draining on your mana. Magic skill acquired! Hydro Jet. You also now have complete immunity to water-based magic!
Impressed with this latest skill but still not satisfied, you try to find even more abilities to plunder from the giant squid. You think back to your encounter with Eliza. You remember she was capable of summoning squid-like tentacles from her back and you reason you should be able to as well. You close your eyes and imagine your body shifting to form multiple, writhing appendages. In a flash, out bursts ten new, elongated limbs formed along the midline of your back. You find them to be extremely dexterous and flexible, able to launch themselves forward to a length of about 3 meters and retract back with elastic-like quickness. They're also strong enough that you're able to easily use them to support your own weight as well as finding them quite capable of gripping the branches of a nearby tree, assisting you in climbing to the top of it with celerity. Finally, two of the limbs are noticeably longer than the other eight and flared out at the extremities. You stretch out one of these longer tentacles and find the flared tip malleable enough to be capable of grasping things similar to a crude human hand. You pick up a large stone with the tentacle and maneuver it around the flared tip. You then wrap the flared section around the stone with enough force to grind it into a fine powder. Finally, in a moment of ingenuity, you think to summon some fire magic but localized to your new limbs as well as the old. You succeed and conjure four fireballs, effectively doubling your magic output. Aspect of the Kraken acquired!
"Oh, I'm sorry!" You quickly retract the tentacles back to the base of your spine. "Was I scaring you? I can get a little carried away when I learn new things..." You rub at the back of your neck as you hastily explain.
"N-no! It's fine! I-I thought it was really cool actually, um... especially the, uh... fire thing you just did."
"Ice magic," you say as you grasp his hand, "I'm going to teach you ice magic."
"O-ok, why ice exactly?" He asks.
"Because I have the most experience with it," You give a little sniff, "and it's my favorite."
"Alright, so... how do I do it?"
'I have no idea!' You think to yourself as you give him a confident smile. You've always just gained your abilities through literal osmosis. Actually teaching someone a magical skill will be a first.
"Alright, I suppose I should demonstrate..." You hold out your hand, gather the necessary mana for the spell, then fire a spike of ice that embeds itself into the tree you've been aiming at all night.
"Whoa! So... um..." He stretches out his arm, "Like this? Uh... is there like a special 'ice summoning' incantation you say in your head or something?"
"Feel the ambient spiritus of the world suffuse your body and guide it to a locus point, the palm of your dominant hand usually being the most efficient, then guide the spirits to form into elemental ice using your internal mana store," you state simply.
"Yeah, uh... pretty sure I don't have an 'internal mana store'..." He trails off.
"Hmm..." You try to think of a better way to explain when suddenly inspiration strikes, "Tatsuo, put your arm in mine."
"...What?"
"Place your arm inside my own, you'll be able to physically 'feel' what I'm doing."
"Uh... okay..." He does as you ask and you envelop his arm in yours, "Gah! Oh, it's... actually not as cold as I thought..."
You just nod and raise your arm up with his in tow. You gather the cryonic energies necessary and fire off another lance. "Did you get it that time?" You ask as you unfurl your arm from his.
"Hmm... I definitely felt something weird inside your arm there," he stretches out his arm again and closes his eyes, "Alright..." he knits his brow in concentration. Several seconds pass before you can see it, a tiny speck of white is conjured in the center of his palm before it suddenly grows in size and takes on the shape of a crude spear. He opens his eyes and looks down in shock, "WHOA!" And the lance flies off into the night sky.
"Haha, did you see that?!" He pumps his fist into the air and does a strange pose with his hips, "I'm a friggin' wizard now! I'm... I'm... feelin' kinda... tired..." you rush to catch him before he collapses. Tatsuo acquired a magic skill! Ice Lance.
"Man..." He leans on you for support, "Magic really takes it out of you... huh?"
"You probably expended too much of your mana doing that. I'm sure you can learn how to summon it more efficiently with practice," you reply.
"Hah, I hope so... Still," he let's out a laugh as his face lights up with a smile, "I did magic!"
"So you did," you return his smile with your own.
As you warm yourself by the fire, you think upon all the things you’ve consumed in your travels, particularly the ones that had an impact on your psyche: the fairy, the imp… Eliza. As you do so, you feel your eyelids growing heavy, and before you can protest, you quickly find yourself drifting off into a dreamless sleep.
You awaken with a start and bear witness to a dark blue sky of churning blue tendrils stretched across the horizon as far as the eye can see. Several twisting columns funnel from the sky and touch down on the fertile field of blue below. A series of deafening groans, similar to the sound tree limbs make when shaken by the wind, permeates the air.
‘Where… am I?’ You think to yourself.
[Continued]
>>
>>4432812
Cautiously, you travel to the swirling cyclones. As you approach, you notice that the twisters bulge out unnaturally as they contact the ground, their bases splaying out into thick, root like structures that burrow into the soil below. These bulges and their roots are considerably thicker in composition than the cloud like mire of filaments connecting them to the maelstrom above. As you step closer and get a better look, you notice what appears to be swirling green energy flowing from the bulges to the ligaments connecting them to the sky above, as well as throughout the roots anchoring them to the ground below.
You examine the bulge closest to you intensely. You notice silk-thin filaments are currently being spun over a lightly damaged section of what you’re coming to realize is a kind of cocoon, as whatever inside thrashes about and damages the interior. You turn your attention to another cocoon, this one quite a bit larger. As you lean forward to examine it, you actually notice a small hole has been torn through the fibers. You peer inside and meet the gaze of an enraged chameleon. It lets loose a piercing shriek but can only struggle ineffectually against the constraints of its fibrous prison. Swiftly, the opening is stitched closed by more filaments and the shrieking muffles as more of that green energy pours out from the cocoon.
You decide to leave the captive chameleon alone and seek out the next cocoon, this one roughly human sized and centered equidistantly from the others. It’s empty, a large opening revealing nothing inside but unstirred tendrils. Unlike the chameleon’s however, this opening shows no signs of being torn open through struggle, rather the coils seemed to have relinquished of their own volition, leaving an eerily symmetrical hole. “Was this… Eliza’s?” You think aloud. You decide it’s best you leave this one alone.
The next cocoon you examine seems rather small, only slightly larger than your fist. You look up and notice only the faintest wisps of green energy flow from this cocoon. You reach out to touch it, and are immediately bombarded with imagery of ice magic, intricate crystalline caverns, and a tiny apothecary hidden inside the trunk of a tree. A soft voice, sickly and weak only manages to penetrate the den of creaking groans by being heard from inside your mind, “Must…get…out… Have to…get…out…so…I…can see……Gertie…” the voice lets out a long, pained moan as you see more of that green energy siphoned from the cocoon. “…” You can no longer hear any voice. You’ve gained frost resistance!
You look back to the empty cocoon. You’re starting to feel tired, and while you hate to admit it, it is starting to look comfortable…
You have to get out of this nightmare. You search around and try to find an exit, trying your hardest to ignore the growing temptation to rest in the empty cocoon. As you continue your search, you grow increasingly exhausted with every step you take. Eventually, you’re so weary you find yourself forced to slump to the ground and crawl, your field of vision showing nothing ahead of you but a sea of twisting blue coils. Your eyelids grow heavy, you close your eyes and sense yourself being pulled underneath the ground as you feel a myriad of tiny fibers link with your flesh.
You wake up with a scream as you furiously try to tear out the cords burrowing into your flesh, but as your hands trace over the contours of your body you find yourself free of any physical ties to that alien landscape. You look around and notice you’re back at camp. Morning rays of sunlight shine through the treetops above as the soothing sounds of birdsong and a bubbling stream are heard. Tatsuo sleepily fumbles out of his tent and stretches languidly. “Morning…” He yawns.
What do you do?
“…Morning,” you repeat absent-mindedly.
“You ok? You mumbled some things in your sleep...” Tatsuo prods.
“I’m fine,” you change the topic briskly, “We need to head back to town, turn in these skink tails to the potion seller,” You indicate by tossing the rucksack over to him. He stumbles but manages to catch it.
“Sounds good. Uh… Barton, right? Gonna be weird visiting a place I’ve supposedly been to before,” he says while scratching at his chin.
“We weren’t there for long, so don’t feel like you’re expected to know where everything is,” you state as you change into droplet form and climb atop his shoulder, “Besides, you’ll have me directing you so there’s no need to worry!”
“Gah! You’re way colder like this! Why do you have to be underneath my jacket again?” He whines.
“Because I don’t have any clothes. Wouldn’t want my debut as an adventuring ‘ice elf’ to draw the wrong kind of attention now, do we?”
“…Fair enough.”
The two of you pack up camp and head on down the forest road to Barton.
It’s noon by the time the two of you reach the town’s gate. The workday crowd is bustling as you direct Tatsuo to the destination, occasionally having to prod him along when he gets distracted by something he designates as suitably ‘quaint’.
“Are we in the shopping district? Look at all these stalls! Oh man, it’s like I stepped right into Dragon Fantasy XXV!!
Amidst the cries of merchants plying their trade and the chatter of prospective shoppers, you’re finding it more difficult to rein in his attention.
“Focus! We can shop later if you’d like, but right now we need the gold!”
A nearby town crier issues the time as half past noon as the two of you walk past.
“Oh, sorry! Got a little caught in the moment,” he says with a blush.
You direct him to a nearby squat cobblestone building with a nondescript storefront, the sign hanging by the doorway dubbing it ‘Drany’s Draughts’. Inside, a short, portly woman sitting behind a display case is rubbing some glassware with a silken cloth. All around her, haphazardly arranged, are thousands of vials of every shape and size filled with fluids of every color of the rainbow, immediately giving Tatsuo pause and forcing him to take it all in.
“TH-THIS IS JUST LIKE—"
“Focus!” You whisper through clenched teeth.
He collects himself and tentatively walks over to the potion seller.
Heeheehee… like Drany’s potions do you, dearie?” She gives a warm smile that’s missing most of its teeth.
“Uh, y-yeah, but I’m actually here to give you-“
“Tails of the skinksies… yeeesss. No trouble for you, were they?”
“N-no, I… I got ‘em good!” He stammers out flexing his wiry arm for her as he plops the skink tails down on the counter. You resist the urge to audibly gag for his sake.
“My, what a fearsome young lad you are, and so eager to help an old crow like me!” she humors him as she grabs one of the tails to inspect it.
“Hmm… Looks like they’re well cut!” She counts them out, “Eleven, eh? Cleared the whole cavern just about, didn’t we? Hmm… Was it 30 gold apiece I promised?” She wonders aloud.
As she counts outs the gold and hands over 330 pieces, you whisper to Tatsuo, “don’t forget to ask her what we spoke of earlier…”
“Right,” Tatsuo clears his throat, “Ma’am? I was wondering if you knew anything about a ‘giant squid’ that lives in the lake found in the skink den,” he asks.
“A ‘giant squid’ you say? Why… no, I’ve never heard of such a thing being found there in all my years. Did you encounter something like that, dear?” Her voice takes on a worried tone.
“Uh… yeah, I-I did actually. Ended up having to use most of my healing potions…” He technically tells the truth.
“My word! Did you actually fight the creature?” She says, looking at Tatsuo with astonishment.
“Um, well… yes. Didn’t end too well for me though…” He gives a grimace.
“Oh, child… You should never attempt to engage a Fell Beast all on your lonesome,” she reaches down to the display case below and pulls out six large pink potions. “Here, hopefully these will recoup your losses somewhat.”
“Oh, thank you very much, ma’am!” He stashes the potions away into the rucksack.
“It’s nothing, dearie. I apologize for sending you on such a dangerous errand. Please… promise me you’ll run to safety if you ever happen to encounter something like that again,” She says with almost a motherly note of concern.
“I-I will, thank you, but… speaking of errands, do you need any more materials?” He asks.
“Hmm… I do, but I fear if I ask you, you’d likely run off to battle with a manticore,” she chastises playfully.
“N-no I won’t! Trust me, I’ve learned my lesson,” Tatsuo stammers out.
“Well… in that case, I am running low on my stock of ‘fly amanitas’. They’re red capped, speckled white and can normally be found in the northern edge of the great woods. Do be careful of the forest creatures living there if you intend to search for them,” she cautiously explains.
“I promise I will, thanks again! Oh, and I also wanted to buy a few more potions from you if I could.”
“By all means, dear. Why, I’ll even throw in a discount!”
You tell Tatsuo to buy three more healing potions as well as three blue mana potions. The total comes up to 30 gold, half of what you’d normally pay!
Tatsuo tells Drany goodbye and heads back outside. As soon as he steps out onto the well-traveled dirt road, a swirling stream of green energy emanates from his rucksack and washes over him. Tatsuo's constitution has increased! His stamina has increased! His mana His might has increased! His resistance has increased! His speed has increased! His fortitude has increased! Tatsuo looks himself over as the energy dissipates.
“WHOA! I feel… AWESOME!!” He does a little twirl and makes a ‘V’ sign with his hand.
“So this is what you meant went you said I could get stronger! Wow, wonder what caused it though? I mean I didn’t kill any…uh… Miss Gelle?” His tone changes from excitement to confusion, “…What are you doing?”
Your droplet form has snaked down to his abdomen, where a single set of tendrils have wrapped themselves snug around his midsection. “I’m… I’m hugging you,” you say, your words muffled by his undershirt.
“O-ok, um… thanks? It’s actually kind of hurting a little tho—”
“Oh, sorry! Sorry!” You slither your way back up his shoulder, “I was just so happy you gained some of your strength back is all,” you state, feeling a bit flushed.
“Oh, well… I’m happy, too!” He smiles.
“Good! I’m… I’m happy you’re happy about that!” You say in a very natural and not at all uncomposed manner. An awkward silence settles between the two you before Tatsuo’s stomach interjects with a groan.
“I really shouldn’t have skipped breakfast... Do you know anywhere good to eat, Miss Gelle?” You give him directions to the ‘Black Cat’ inn and the two of you set off for town square.
When you arrive, you find the inn is a little less busy than the last time you visited, and once Tatsuo pays for food and drink the two of you sit down at the booth furthest away from the other patrons. “What’s our next move?” He whispers to you.
“First, we need to make sure we’re properly equipped,” you whisper to him as the waitress comes by with a plate full of food. You surreptitiously carve yourself a piece of meat and continue, “Let’s spend some of the gold we earned on armor and a new weapon for you.”
“Sounds good,” He starts digging into his meal ravenously, “You know, I’ve got a theory about how I gained that power,” he says after swallowing a hunk of potato.
“Oh?” You savor the taste of the juicy sirloin as you let him continue.
“Yeah, you know how we’ve talked about how I get stronger like I’m an ‘RPG’ character? Well, in RPGs, you often gain ‘experience points’—Er, ‘power’ once you’ve completed what the game designates as a ‘quest’. It’s usually done as a kind of incentive to ensure you actually help NP—people… instead of just going off murdering everything you see.”
“Hmm… So what you’re saying is that turning in those skink tails to the potion seller constituted the completion of a… ‘quest’, and therefore you were rewarded with power for the trouble,” You muse as you set your gaze on the carrots.
“Exactly!” He takes a big bite out of the steak, “What’s more is that often these quests didn’t require any kind of combat, sometimes all you had to do was, like, fetch someone some flowers or something,” He downs a swig of ale from his glass before continuing, “I bet, if I brought Mrs. Drany those mushrooms and didn’t actually fight anything, I’d still get a power boost.”
“Interesting… it sounds like so long as anything is construed as a ‘quest’ and you complete the required parameters, you could theoretically gain enough power to fight the ‘Demon King’ without any risk of personal injury. This is fantastic news! Let’s try it out now: Tatsuo, I’m asking for you to fetch me some food from your plate. Do you accept this quest?”
“Whoa, what a way to game the system! Yeah, I’ll accept.” He hovers his fork above the plate.
>Tatsuo gives you a piece of the steak.
“Yes, just give me some of your—OOAARRGH!!” Tatsuo drops the fork and just shoves his entire meal inside you, plate and all.
“There! I figured I’d clear any optional objectives by just giving you everything,” he says with a bright smile, “pretty clever, right?”
“AAOORRGGHH!!!” You’re so packed with matter you’re physically unable to form a coherent sentence.
As you silently stew in anger over being treated as waste disposal, Tatsuo waits patiently for his power gain.
“Huh, I’m not feeling any stronger; does it know we’re cheating the system?” He scratches at his temple in thought.
You wait for enough food to dissolve before responding, “Maybe because I only asked for some food, not the ENTIRE PLA—” You’re stopped mid-rant as a tiny green wisp of energy flies out from your body and pops like a soap bubble on top of Tatsuo’s head.
“Oh wow, it actually worked!” He states with surprise, “at least… I think it did.”
“Is something wrong?” Your tone switches from anger to concern.
“N-no. It’s just… I barely felt anything from that,” he rubs at his chin in thought, “How to put it… It’s like last time felt like getting completely submerged in a lake of… ‘energy’, or something. This felt like getting hit by a rain drop.”
“Sounds like you still gained some power,” you reply.
“Yeah, but we’d probably just run out of gold before it would add up to anything meaningful,” he rubs the back of his neck, “Oh well. It was worth a shot.”
“Don’t be so disappointed,” you state with reassurance, “this was a success. We now have explicit confirmation that you can gain—how was it put—‘experience points’ from completing nonviolent requests.”
“Eh, I guess you’re right…” He says, still sounding a little discouraged.
“Of course I’m right,” you answer with confidence, “Now then, let’s get out of here and get properly equipped.” The two of you leave the inn and head to the blacksmith.
He gives Tatsuo a somewhat skeptical look, “Didn’t you *just* buy some armor from me a day or two ago, boy?”
“O-oh well, uh… I, um… lost them in a fight? ….And, w-well I, uh…” Tatsuo babbles.
Tatsuo eyes the many different sets of armor on display. All sorts of iron and steel sets, simple furs and leathers, to more ornate looking pieces appearing to have been crafted predominantly from an odd, crystalline material. His gaze lingers on a simple chainmail set equipped with a steel-studded leather shield.
“Are you sure?” You whisper, “we can afford something more protective if you’d like.”
“I think so. I want something I can move in easily that I can actually take off by myself,” he replies before turning his attention to the blacksmith, “Um, sir? I think I’d like a set like this, with the shield included.”
The man grunts and steps forward, he then places his hand on Tatsuo’s shoulder and closes his eyes.
“Uh… sir?” Tatsuo wears an uncomfortable look on his face as the man continues to hold his shoulder for several seconds.
“Right.” The man turns his attention to the armor, stretches open his palm and then out flows an ethereal shimmer of energy that coats the chainmail set, morphing it until the proportions better suit a slimmer build.
“That’ll be about 240g, including the shield.”
“WHOA! How’d you do that?!” Tatsuo’s eyes practically pop out of his skull.
“Alteration magic. Runs in the family. Helps me get the details *juuust* right,” the blacksmith says with a slight smirk, “Anyways, you wanted a weapon this time too, right?”
“Y-yes, um… Do you have, like, a sabre or something that cuts real well?” Tatsuo asks.
The blacksmith wordlessly gestures to the myriad weapon racks adorning his store. Tatsuo tries several different swords, spears, even a few blunt instruments, before his hand grips the elegant, basketed hilt of a short, wickedly curved cutlass.
“This. This is the one for me,” He states enthralled, eyes running up and down the blade.
“Huh, Kajun’da make. Didn’t figure you for the bloodthirsty type,” the blacksmith says with a dark chuckle.
“Uh, well…” Tatsuo stammers.
“50g, which comes up to 290 total,” The blacksmith goes back to his seat as Tatsuo hands over the gold.
“That all?” The blacksmith asks as he begins sharpening his sword again.
“So what now?” Tatsuo asks as he walks the two of you back to town square.
“Well, between the potions, food, and your new equipment, we now have less gold than when we first started. We should probably look into collecting those mushrooms for the potion seller,” you answer.
“Sounds good,” Tatsuo thrusts his new cutlass towards the town gate, “Onwards to out next mission!”
“Uh, yeah… Onwards,” you awkwardly mimic him with a tendril.
~~~

You wake up from your sleep roll and give a full body stretch, an odd quirk you’ve developed while in human form considering you don’t technically have anything in need of limbering. By the time you and Tatsuo had found a place to set up camp it was already dark, so you both decided to turn in early.

“Mornin’…” Tatsuo yawns as he plods out of his tent. He stops and stares at you, “…Why didn’t you feel the need to buy clothes again?” His face glowing red.

You glance down at your pale figure for a moment before responding, “Not enough gold. Would likely just get in the way of my movement out in the field. You need to stop being so hung up about this.”

He just lets out an exasperated sigh, “Whatever, keep going ‘au naturel’ for all I care,” he puts his hands into his pockets and sulks.

“While we’re on the subject of clothing,” you interject, “go ahead and get yourself fully equipped. I don’t care if we’re picking daisies by a bubbling stream of rainbows and honey; there’s always something in this forest that’ll want us dead.”

“Right,” he slips back into his tent and dons his armor and sword, “Let’s get those mushrooms for Mrs. Drany!”

A few hours later the two of you arrive at the northern edge of the great forest, the typical bright green foliage of the deciduous trees begin to subside into the dark greens and browns more typical of a coniferous forest.

“Hey, look!” Tatsuo rushes over to the trunk of a large evergreen, “there’s two right here!” He plucks out the red and white speckled ‘shrooms and presents them to you with undue pride, “We’re gonna be raking in the gold in no time if—“ Tatsuo is interrupted as a heavy shuffling sound is heard. Immediately, a large, bulky figure bursts from the brush and tries to tackle him to the ground. Luckily, he manages to avoid the blundering creature’s lunge, regain his footing, and draw his blade.

“What am I looking at?”

“A ‘Mushroom Man’!” You shout.

The mushroom man jiggles its form menacingly

Wile Tatsuo needs to learn how to fight we don't know how dangerous and powerful is this thing, and giving him a stat boost before his "first" fight sounds better than sending a lvl1 guy against an unknown enemy.

The fungus monster’s dull green eyes leer at Tatsuo as it slowly shuffles towards him, stubby hands outstretched and grasping wildly as rivulets of purple drip from its open maw. You quickly sidle up to him to offer support, “Tatsuo, I’m sorry, but you’re going to need real combat experience.”

“Ok,” Tatsuo affirms, a focused look in his eyes.

“Good,” you study the lumbering, drooling creature closely, “…It’s slow, but looks strong and can probably take quite a beating. We also don’t know what—if any—tricks it has up its sleeve. I recommend you keep your distance, try to hit it with a ranged—”

A barrage of icicles burrow themselves into the tender flesh of the trudging mushroom, encasing its entire body from the ‘neck’ down in a prison of frost.

“Man I love magic!” Tatsuo pumps his fist up into the air victoriously.

The mushroom monster moans plaintively as it rapidly shakes its head side to side, the only movement permissible in its current predicament. As it does so, you notice a cloud of purple spores emanating from its cap and billowing all about, thankfully far out of reach of the two of you.

“I think my work here is done,” Tatsuo says, dusting off his hands while smugly smirking at the creature. It’s then you notice the spores are slowly eating away at the ice.

“Always finish a job before you start your gloating,” you chastise.

>Consume it whole. It’s in no position to fight back and you need all the strength you can get if you want to protect Tatsuo.

It's because of the check based combat system QM. Maybe instead of changing it to a normal system you could make the effects of a crit lower, which would make the combat a little more drawn out. Have checks for attacks and dodging attacks for both fighters and I think it would be harder to one shot minibosses

Wasting no time, you engulf the creature in its entirety. Eliza’s leaving has left you with some extra room to fill, but this thing is still quite large. As the walking mushroom dissolves, you direct the mass to fill out your interior as much as you can. You’re largely successful, with only a little spill over into your typical designated mass deposits. Mass Increased! Your form has grown slightly more curvaceous!

As you return to humanoid form, you attempt to copy the corroding spores you saw the fungus produce. As you do so, the pores of your skin release a gaseous vapor of your own digestive juices. It billows out all around you reaching a diameter of about 3.5 meters with you in the epicenter, immediately putrefying any plant life you happened to be standing by. Combine this with corroding touch and you doubt anything will want to be anywhere near you with this active. New technique acquired! Miasma of Decay. You’ve also gained corrosion resistance! You now have complete immunity to corrosion-based damage!

Satisfied with your meal, you trot along up to Tatsuo.

“Whoa… I’ve got to be honest, that was pretty gruesome,” he states with a hint of fear in his eyes.

You slap your forehead and groan, “Oh, I forgot you haven’t seen me eat before! I’m sorry about that. I’ll warn you to look away next time.”

“No it’s… fine, I just—” Tatsuo’s eyes light up green as he’s washed over by that familiar aura. Tatsuo's constitution has increased! His stamina has increased! His mana has increased! His might has increased! His resistance has increased! His speed has increased! His fortitude has increased!

“OH YEAH! LEVEL UP, BABY!!” He swings his sword at a nearby thicket and is delighted at how cleanly he can make it slice through. “Man I feel great!” he turns back to look at you, “…Wait, did your… chest get bi—”

“H-HALT!” You hear a high-pitched cry.

The two of you crane your necks upward in the direction of the voice and find a young woman perched atop a tree limb, sighting down a nocked arrow pointed directly at you.

“ST-STATE YOUR BUSINESS HERE, I-INTRUDERS!!”

"Intruders? I don’t believe we’re trespassing on any elven property. Who could be so arrogant as to claim an entire forest as theirs? More importantly,” you cross your arms over your prodigious chest and arch a brow, “just who the heck are you?!"

You doubt a mere arrow can seriously harm you so you figure you can afford a little grandstanding, that, and you’d like to draw her attention away from Tatsuo as much as possible.

“I-I’m the one asking questions here, D-Dhalshai!” Her voice trembles out, “…L-like, um… w-why are you… unclothed and… w-with a male ‘gwei?” Her face reddens as her eyes have trouble keeping focus on you.

“What’s the matter little one? Can’t handle what you see?” You take a deep breath and exhale slowly, watching as the elf’s eyes all but fall out of their sockets as she openly stares at the steady rise and fall of your endowments.

“I-I…” Her gaze lingers as she steps backward slightly to adjust her footing, “I… KYYAAAA!!!” She miscalculates and suddenly falls from her tree branch and tumbles over a few smaller limbs before collapsing into a large bush head first, leaving only her lower body exposed.

“…We should probably help her out of there,” Tatsuo comments neutrally as he goes to fish the elf out, her legs frantically kicking against air.

“Fine, but make sure not to let your guard down. She did raise a weapon against us,” you say as you prepare an Ice Lance.

After nearly receiving a black eye from one of her flailing kicks, Tatsuo manages to grab both of her legs and fling her out of the brush in a surprising display of strength. She’s sent rolling across the ground a few times before flopping down face first at your feet. She meekly raises her head up to you as you look down your nose at her.

"So then, why are you going around pointing arrows at people?" You ask as you hover an Ice Lance against her cheek.

“P-please don’t kill me, M-miss honorable dhalshai,” she blubbers, eyes filled with tears.

“That depends on whether you answer my questions adequately. Again, why did you threaten us?” You ask as you take a seat on her prone from, forcing her to sprawl out on the ground even further.

“I’m… one of the… only… survivors… of an… attack… on my… village ,” she struggles to speak under your weight, “I… was just… trying to… protect myself…”

“So you decided the best course of action was to threaten the first people you came across?” You ask, not really buying this sob story.

“I’m… bad at… socializing…”

“Uh-huh,” you shift your weight a little and she lets out a squeak in response, “So what exactly ‘attacked’ your village?”

“One of… the Demon King’s… generals… Gorroth the… Spiteful,” she strains out.

“Who’s that?” Tatsuo pipes up, unfazed by the blood trickling from his nostrils.

“Ugh… You haven’t… heard of… Gorroth the… Green-eye—AGH!” She stammers as you shift more of your weight on her.

“No, he hasn’t. Care to inform him?” You give her your warmest smile.

“Gorroth… hates… all Shaivehyn…” she briefly glances at Tatsuo, “… All elvenkind… He wants to… eradicate us… We were… merely his… latest targets…”

“Why does he hate elves?” Tatsuo asks.

“No one… knows… It’s just… always… been that way…”

“So… he shows up to your village and, what, razes it to the ground?” You ask.

“No… He sent an… emissary… A terrible… Fell Beast…” she coughs, “could you… shift your… weight… a little… further down…? Hard to… speak…”

“Fine,” You oblige her request, but keep the Ice Lance pressed up against her cheek, “That better?”

“Y-yes, Miss. Thank you,” the elf lets out a little sigh, “I’m s-sorry I threatened the two of you, but I was afraid you might attack me first. S-so I decided to take initiative instead of running away like last time…”

“You should stick to running away,” you remark coldly.

“I think we should help her,” Tatsuo interjects.

“What?” You quirk an eyebrow at him, “Why?”

“I mean, we’re trying to hunt down the Demon King, right? This ‘Gorroth’ seems as good a lead as any.”

“She was just trying to kill us!” You argue.

“N-not if you’d left me alone!” You glare down at the elf as she speaks, “…S-sorry I’ll stop talking now…”

>Fine, but we need to train ourselves up before we face the village Fell Beast.

“Alright Tatsuo, you’ve got a point,” you say as you lift yourself from your seat, “but we need to make sure we’re absolutely prepared before we try taking on another ‘Fell Beast’.” You glance down at the elf still lying flat on the ground, “You can get up now, we’ve decided we’re going to take back your village.”

She slowly gets back up on her feet and dusts herself off, “…There’s not much of a village left to re-take…” she states ruefully.

“Then we’ll take back what’s left,” you affirm to her, “now then, since you’ll be telling us all about this Gorroth and his ‘Fell Beast’, I need to know what to call you.”

“M-my name is Elsyth… Th-thank you for deciding not to kill me,” she gives you a measured little bow, “D-does this mean I’m a part of your t-troupe now, M-miss…?”

“Gelle. And this is Tatsuo,” you gesture towards the boy in chainmail who promptly gives Elle a thumbs up which she awkwardly mimes, “And… sure, I guess. You’re now the third member of our little group.”

“Oh thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, Ms. Gelle and Mr. Tatsuo!” She rushes up to you and clasps your hand in hers, “I’m so happy I managed to run into such kind people who’d welcome a wretch like me into their fold!” She sniffs slightly as her eyes well up with tears, “I feel it's only fair to warn you that I’ve never truly had 'companions' before, but nevertheless I promise to aid the two of you on your noble quest to slay the Demon King to the furthest of my ability!”

“I’m… not sure that’s the ‘healthiest’ response to this arrangement,” Tatsuo states as he rubs the back of his neck, “still, happy to have you aboard, Elsyth,” he flashes her a wide grin.

“Happy to be ‘a board’, Mr. Tatsuo, sir! Now then, how can I be of service? Do you need me to guide you to safety from the more treacherous parts of the forest? “No, you’re too flat and bony for comfortable seating,” you state, ignoring her crestfallen look, “I want you to tell me more about this ‘Fell Beast’ that destroyed your village, then I want to know the best places to find ‘fly amanita’ mushrooms.

She blinks owlishly, “I’m not sure how to describe it…” She cranes her head to the side in thought, “It was like… a floating haze of churning rubble. It called forth terrible gales of wind that would completely level any building and dwelling place. Against my people its winds struck with such ferocity and precision that it tore them to little pieces…” She’s visibly shaking now as she revisits her encounter with the beast, “If it weren’t for the valiant efforts of my brother I… I…” She’s on the verge of tears.

“Hey, hey, it’s going to be ok, alright?” Tatsuo steps in and places a reassuring hand on her shoulder, “you’re safe now, and we’ll make sure to keep you that way.”

“Y-yes, thank you. I-I’m sorry, I… you wanted to know where to find fly amanitas, right? I know of a good place to find them,” she moves ahead of the two of you, just far enough for her to be out of earshot, “I’ll lead the way forward, i-if you’d… like me to that is?” She shouts.

“Once we head back to Barton we should inquire about the beast seen near the sawmill, the one Elsyth mentioned seems a little beyond our current abilities” you say.

“There was a Fell Beast back in Barton? Nobody seemed all that worried,” Tatsuo asks incredulously.

“It supposedly stays in the old sawmill found just east of town, it’s probably not powerful enough to expand its territory,” you answer.

“Um, friends? We’ve almost made it…” Without realizing it, the two of you almost slam right into Elsyth, who’s been waiting patiently for you at the foot of a large redwood. She leads the three of you through some dense foliage before you come to a small clearing in the grove surrounded by a forest of evergreens. Here you find numerous red capped, white spotted mushrooms all around, as well as a number of odd, golden capped shrooms.

“Oh, gold caps!” Elsyth rushes forward, “I don’t normally find th—” the ground rumbles around her feet as three, gnarled trees suddenly burst forth from under the ground.

“What are those!?” Tatsuo shouts.

The trees shake as if caught in a storm, before a humanoid set of limbs as well as a crude facsimile of a face branch off from their form. They make a creaking groaning sound as they reach out toward Elsyth.

“Elsyth, run parallel of them!” You shout, “I want all three chasing you single file!”

“Uh…OK!” She dodges a clumsy swipe from the closet tree monster and sets out to follow your directives. She lets out a high-pitched shriek as she does, ensuring that all three ents are focused squarely on her as they give chase.

“Good, she’s got them aaall lined up for me,” you turn to Tatsuo, “I’m gonna try and kill three trees with one stream. I want you to finish off what survives.”

“Got it,” He nods as he brandishes his sabre.

You hold up your arm and aim at the leftmost straggler. You attempt to summon a rock boring jet of pressurized water but, “Urrrgh… what is going on…?” You say through grit teeth.

“Gelle, is something wro—AAAGH!!” A spurt of black ink squirts out from the side of your arm and splashes Tatsuo right across his face.

“AARGH! I CAN’T SEE!!” He drops his sword and starts furiously rubbing at his eyes.

TATSUO!!” You cry out.

“Um… I might some help over here, please!” You turn your attention to Elsyth and notice two of the ents have her cornered while the third’s not far behind...

>Go Kraken and try to wrestle them away from Elsyth. Say goodbye to your disguise.

You try to conjure a volley of ice lances at the two ents nearest to Elsyth, but unfortunately you still seem to be having trouble guiding the necessary spiritus.

“C’mon… C’mon!!” You finally manage to strain out a lone, limpid lance and take aim, only for it to shatter to pieces mere moments after forming.

“Oh, COME ON!!!” You shout in anger.

“Help me, help me plea—AAAHH!!!” One of the ents tears through Elsyth’s cloth armor, leaving a nasty trio of gouges across her back. She manages to dodge the swipe from the second ent, more out of its own clumsiness than any dexterity on her part. The third ent closes in…

>Enough with magic then. Let loose a trio of Rot Shots. You doubt ‘ice elves’ are known for their corrosive abilities…

Elsyth closes her eyes as she braces herself for the coming end. ‘I should’ve known I was living on borrowed time…’ She thinks to herself sadly. Several seconds pass as she keeps her eyes screwed tight. ‘Shouldn’t I be torn to shreds by now?” She asks herself. She slowly peeks her eyes open. A massive, twisting spire of blue is all she can envision. It’s shape grows serpentine as her eyes race up its form, with endless coils writhing over themselves for support as they splay out across the forest clearing. At the very top, three crude figures are held aloft by innumerable, sinuous tendrils spiraling from the center. They crumple like parchment and are summarily absorbed into the writhing tower. A fourth figure forms at its tip, its shape feminine and immediately recognizable.

“M-miss… Gelle?” Is all Elsyth can utter.

Slowly, the figure descends from the clouds as much of the warped structure is drawn up into her. When her feet finally touch ground, all that remains of the spire are the many dozens of tentacles radiating out from her backside.

“…Elsyth,” the figure speaks.

“Y-y-y-yes, uh… w-what…” all Elsyth can do is stutter and slink back as the figure approaches her.

“…Your wounds… are they… severe?”

“N-NO! NO, NO… TH-THEY’RE… umm…” Elsyth’s eyes search all around her as she fumbles for the right words to say, “…CAN HEAL! …I-I CAN… heal… my…… wounds…”

“…Good,” The figure collapses in a heap as the tentacles slink even further into her until they disappear completely, leaving nothing but smooth skin behind.

~~~
A figure in chainmail vigorously pawing at his eyes stumbles on over until he trips over her body and falls to the ground, “Gelle? Is this you? …You ok? Where’s Elsyth? I… I can’t see anything…”
Aspect of Leviathan has awakened.
What will Elsyth do?
Elsyth very cautiously approaches Tatsuo, keenly aware of the being he’s currently sprawled out upon.
“D-Do you need healing, Mr. Tatsuo?” She asks as she stitches together her own wounds.
He continues to paw at his eyes, “Can you heal status ailments? Because—” he’s interrupted by a swirling stream of green energy washing over him. Tatsuo's constitution has increased! His stamina has increased! His might has increased! His resistance has increased! His speed has increased! He stops rubbing at his eyes as the ink dissipates along with the aura.
“Whoa… I guess we won after all,” he looks down to see what’s supporting his weight and freezes, “GELLE?? Gelle, what happened to you!?” he grabs you by the shoulders and starts trying to shake you awake.
Elsyth stands by, wringing her hands in anxiety as another current of green energy sneaks its way towards her and engulfs her from behind. Elsyth's constitution has increased! Her mana has increased! Her resistance has increased! Her speed has increased! Her fortitude has increased!
“I…” Elsyth looks down at herself in disbelief, “I feel… Stronger!”
“Th-that’s… wonderful, Elsyth,” Tatsuo says as he continues to focus his attention on you, “…but right now I need to know what’s happened to Gelle…”
“You… you didn’t see it!?” She says with incredulity.
“I was blind, remember?”
“I… sorry… poor choice of words…” Elsyth plays with the hem of her blouse before continuing, “She became a… tower of writhing tendrils. She carried the Ents high up in the sky and then did… something to them that sucked them up inside her,” she trembles slightly as she speaks.
“W-what… is she, Mr. Tatsuo?”
“She’s uh, the ‘Chosen One of Globule’… at least, that’s what she’s told me she supposedly is,” Tatsuo scratches at his cheek.
“The… ‘Chosen One of… Globule?’, I’ve never hard of such a thing…” Elsyth stares down at your sleeping body, now a near monochrome blue, “…why was she disguising herself as a dhalshai?”
“That means ‘ice elf’, right? She told me she didn’t want people knowing she was a kind of ‘slime monster’, said it would hurt our reputation as traveling adventurers.” Tatsuo explains.
“So she’s a type of slime,” Elsyth plays with the tip of one of her pointed ears in thought, “…I’ve never known a ‘slime’ to be capable of… feats such as hers; they’re largely regarded as pests only attracting the occasional interest of alchemists or those interested in cataloguing magical fauna…” She pauses as she looks down at you again and a blush appears on her cheeks, “…w-why is she nude, though? Is it a kind of… m-mating ritual?"
“W-WHAT!?” Tatsuo rears back in shock, “NO! W-we’ve never… mated! N-not that I’m… uninterested, I just,” He bites his tongue before finishing that sentence, “Ok wow, that, HA! That… um…” he gulps nervously as he fidgets about, “what I mean to say is that: no, there’s absolutely nothing going on between us, um… carnally speaking.
“But… you want there to be?” Elsyth asks as she tilts her head in confusion.
Tatsuo’s jaw drops as he lets out a sound remarkably similar in tone to an unoiled door hinge, “Ok, STOP! Forget you heard me say that, ok?”
“Forget what, soft-step?”
The two of them practically jump out of their skin at the sound of your groggy voice.
“Urrrrgh,” you slowly lift yourself off the ground and crane your neck from side to side, making an audible cracking noise as you do so, “…Alright, enemies defeated; that’s one crisis averted. Elsyth?,” You jerk your neck towards her, “I’m not actually a ‘dhalshai’. I hope you won’t hold that against me.”
“I… o-of course not!!” She vigorously shakes her head no.
“Good,” you rise up to your feet and dust yourself off, “let’s just pick up where we left off and gather these mushrooms, ok?”
They both nod in unison and get to work collecting.
“You seemed pretty excited to find these ‘gold caps’ before everything, uh… happened,” you say to Elsythe as you pick a mushroom up to examine it.
“Oh! We were all told by the village shaman to keep an eye out for them when foraging. He said they aided him in his oracling,” she answers enthusiastically.
Tatsuo snorts and under his breath murmurs, “Yeah, I’ll bet they did…”
“Would they be worth anything alchemically?” You ask.
“I’m not sure, alchemy isn’t really my forte,” She places an index finger on her bottom lip and looks up in thought, “I do know they were highly sought after by the merchants that would occasionally pass through our village…”
“Then grab as many as you can. If merchants want them then others will, too,” you command.
“Er, I’m sure he’s… proud of you? He’s probably watching you from, like, a better place in the sky and all… and, uh…” Tatsuo makes his best attempt to be consoling as his hand hovers ever so slightly above her shoulder.
She lets out a little sigh as she turns around and gives him a sad smile, “I was never that close to him actually. He often couldn’t even get my name right!” She lets out a little giggle.
“Elsyth, are there any other areas like this? I’d like to see if we can find more amanitas,” you interject.
“S-sure, I don’t mind! I-I mean, it’s the least I could do for you,” she offers demurely.
“Wait, Gelle. Don’t you think we’ve done enough? I mean, I’m not all that keen on fighting any more ‘walking trees’ today,” Tatsuo recommends.
“Hmm… What do you think, Elsyth?” You ask.
“I… I’m fine with whatever you want, Miss Gelle! You’ve saved my life twice over in a day after all!” She says, trying her best to sound sprightful while not quite meeting your gaze.
“Alright, it’s obvious now we’re all dancing around the issue of *what* I actually am, so let’s clear the air up and discuss the matter in detail,” you suggest.
Tatsuo and Elsyth share an uneasy glance at your proposal.
“Well, come on now. Let’s get it out there. I know it’s in the back of all our mi—"
“Why?” Elsyth says with a slight tremor in her voice.
Why? It’s clearly eating at the both of you and I want to make sure you trust—”
“What she’s asking is… why are you bothering with us?” Tatsuo stares at you with wary eyes.
His look stops you cold.
“M-Miss Gelle, I… *saw* what you truly are. Surely whatever meager offerings we could provide would be at best insubstantial. At worst, our ineptitude could actively hinder you…” Elsyth looks down at her feet.
“I… kind of agree…” Tatsuo rubs the back of his neck as he looks off to the side.
“Tatsuo, that’s completely untr—"
“I’ve noticed how you treat me, you know,” He looks back to you, “It’s like you feel you owe me or… something. There’s this real sense of… guilt, like, you constantly have to keep tabs on me. I know it’s because you saw me get… killed, but… what are you going to do if that happens again? Will you just… start over with another one?”
“I… Tatsuo…”
“I mean, searching for fungi in the woods like some kind of trained hog, honestly! Miss Gelle, surely you realize you’re akin to a *GOD!*” Elsyth meets your gaze for the first time, eyes filled with… Indignation?
“No, no I’m not. What kind of…‘god’ would—” The world around you darkens as Tastuo and Elsyth continue their stricture.
“Yes, you are, Gelle! Ask yourself what you stand to gain consorting with those so beneath you, so… incapable of appreciating what you truly are!” They say in unison.
“I’m just… trying to…”
“Train us? Make us ‘strong’? Why? We’re weak. We’re… useless, mere insignificants to your vast grandeur. You would become so much more if you just gave up on us and pursued what truly drives you,” their bodies spasm as they speak, convulsing into ghoulish shapes lashing out viciously in rhythm with the intonation of their amalgamated speech. In time, the formless masses that were ‘Tatsuo’ and ‘Elsyth’ merge together seamlessly into a single, dreadfully familiar being. Her face finishes defining itself and her lips curl up into a gentle smile, her eyes filled with genuine warmth.
“What drives us both, dear sister.”
I've gotta be honest guys, I think I'm getting a little burnt out here. When I started this quest I didn't think it would last for more than a few days at most, in fact I viewed it more as a writing exercise for another quest than anything substantial. Then I introduced an isekai 'protagonist', had you guys vore a psycho, and now I'm trying to wing it and flesh out a world that's—let's be real—little more than a collection of poorly disguised slimegirl fetish fuel and outmoded swords and sorcery cliches.
The point is: I think I've bitten off more than I can chew here, and I'm not sure I'm capable of updating this poorly conceived thing at the (already sluggish) pace I've been going at. I don't want to abandon it as I do genuinely enjoy writing it, but today just feels like trying to squeeze blood from a stone, and I've been having more and more days like that lately. So, I dunno, maybe I should do a schedule, like update MWF or something. Would enough people stick around for that?
Schedule is good. Hobbies are made for your own personal enjoyment. Once it's starting to become a chore, it stops being fun.
I haven't been posting much, but rest assured I've been reading! I want this to be fun for you as it has been for me.
This guy is right too, a lot of the great old quests start out with little to no planning or worldbuilding. You'd get stuff like Dorf Quest that started with a couple of playtesting rooms and became a giant adventure. Joker Quest, which is the longest running quest on the board, had a big restructuring of the setting and lore a few threads in and ended up reconning a lot of stuff before it really hit its stride.
An important note for keeping players with this sort of system; even if you aren't running be communicating. If you're not able to run for a while tell us, if you're going to run on a certain day tell us, if you're unable to run when you previously thought you could tell us.
So long as players feel like you're still out there and haven't ghosted us people won't jump ship.
Also don't feel bad about a bit of burn out being creative is hard work and we're glad to have you.
Alright fellas. I've got a two week training period I have to attend for a new position that just started today, so I'm gonna pause the updates for this week and the next. After that, I should have a little more time to write and get this thing back on track. Sorry for the inconvenience! I'll get this archived when I get the chance
Thanks for the update! Don't beat yourself up about world building. Creative settings are well and good but there is absolutely nothing wrong with classic high fantasy rpg, and I for my part felt right at home between birchtwee, mushroom lady and arms Smith. I do feel that we became much too mighty too quick though, and this puts you in a tough spot as a writer. Good job with introducing a foil/philosophical adversary that showed us the frailty of our little pet project. But I feel for proper questing we would need a much stronger adversary to work our way up to. Enter the demon king? Maybe a curse to set us back a notch?
"Flashbacks from the squid pass by" we aren't that mighty, a little slip and we re done for good, also the red psycho is probably just as strong as us but more willing to go full genocidal murder-hobo, so personally i think the difficulty is fine as it is, the only thing that has been saving us it's Tatsuo's godlike combat rolls and our general luck, but a bad roll and all party members say bye bye, Tatsuo gets a full reset and we get another trauma to the pile.
Thanks for the kind words! Gelle's 'power level' could definitely use some fine tuning, I agree. I feel like I've thrown way too many abilities her way with very little thought towards proper balancing. I wanted a sort of Castlevania Aria of Sorrows kind of feel to power gain I guess. Still, I'm thinking of toning the power creep down a bit so as not to make her feel invincible in battle.
I will point out that, while almost completely impervious to flat physical damage, Gelle is actually quite weak to most elemental magic, even factoring in some of the resistances she's picked up. That chameleon in the previous thread was supposed to demonstrate this with its electricity, but it ended up getting vored immediately, which, again, was my fault for making that fight too crit dependent. Anyways, thanks everyone for reading and I hope to see at least a few of you again soon!
