Howdy all, and welcome to “A Song of Duty and Spite; House Reynold Quest”. Here we play as Ser Mervyn Reynold, a lowborn son of a bastard hedge knight who, through his skill at arms and a bit of luck, has married into the noble House Reynold of Ember Peak. He currently serves as Lady Elleanor Reynold’s sword shield, and in the murky depths of in-house politics he will attempt to rise high despite coming from such humble origins. These waters are treacherous however. Lady Elleanor has not forgotten her once betrothed, the late Reynard Reyne, and while she attempts to keep control of her house, her husband Lord Titus has the backing of Lord Tywin himself, and has a strong influence over the Reynold Military. The Mad King grows more and more erratic, and now war has fallen on the Seven Kingdoms as Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark have raised their banners against House Tararyen. Will you remain Lady Elleanors right hand, or will you strike out on your own in your pursuit of position and power? Let get stuck in and find out!!Character Sheet: https://1drv.ms/x/s!Am-XCwIRrb9HgwmwnloQ1bkNeh0jHouse History: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Iv-MYkYmv9CTm9tgAPIGziluZvO3wl0x/view?usp=sharingArchive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=ReynoldIf you guys want to stay updated on run times and other stuff, you can follow me on twitter @Joebree28428728
Dramatis Personae:>Ser Mervyn Reynold, 26, Our MC.Ser Mervyn grew up the son of a bastard hedge knight who did not know his father and a blacksmiths daughter. After his mother passed at the age of 5, his father began travelling the westerlands to sell his sword to anyone who would hire him. Eventually, the man passed away to a pox when Mervyn was 17, but not before knighting his son. He than took his fathers horse and mule and travelled in the same way. Eventually, he heard of a tourney for a young maiden’s hand, he attended and won handily over many much nobler knights. He now serves the Lady of the House, Elleanor Reynold as her sworn shield.>Alyssa Reynold, 18, Mervyn’s WifeAlyssa is a pretty young girl, and mother to hers and Ser Mervyn’s infant son, Marqus. She is driven and tenacious, if not impatient and occasionally jealous, and she has been reared to be a player in the game by her mother. While not considered beautiful as her elder sister might be, her red curls and sea green eyes certainly make her comely. She is gifted at weaving through the art of noble intrigue and has a knack for remembering heraldry and house history.>Lord Titus Reynold, 46Lord Titus was born Titus Lantell of Lannisport, and grew up to be a knight who swore his sword to the Lannisters. During the Reyne/Tarbeck Rebellion, he was commanded by Tywin Lannister to march with 300 men to confine the Lady Elleanor, then a maiden of 16 years, and prevent House Reynold from aiding the Reynes and Tarbecks in rebellion as a favour to her father, the late Lord Marqus. A relatively oafish man who cares not for the workings of his house, he is not without a degree of cunning and ultimately seeks to usurp his wife as the true head of the house.>Lady Elleanor Reynold, 36Lady Elleanor is a woman who remembers. Once betrothed to Ser Reynard Reyne, she endured losing both her father and betrothed in the span of a year at the age of 16, and was subsequently married off to a lowly knight of Lannisport. She endured the dishonour, even providing 6 children to her husband, all in the memory of her father and Reynard. She is the true power in Ember Peak, and seeks to retain control of her house by any means necessary.
--- 29/04/283 ---A fresh winter storm had blown in from the north and snow was falling down from the sky and blanketing the ground in another layer of white. Your eyes tracked once particularly large flake that fell slowly before coming to close to the small fire you’d made and evaporating almost instantly in the flames. You huddled underneath your cloak as your eyes shifted from the fire, to Ser Austins sleeping form, to the darkness that surrounded you. The two of you had circumvented no less than three parties of rebels hunting for loyalists south of the Trident, and the fourth one had gotten within striking distance not three days past. The fighting had been ferocious as you had cut your way free from the small group of infantry and you had ridden hard for the last three days to put distance between you. You had seen a huge number of men die at your own hand at the Battle of the Trident, and yet the smaller fighting that had taken place afterwards had been all the more personal and horrific. Your hand idly scratched at your overgrown beard as you recalled the broken men who had sought to make off with your horse. The first man had died quickly but the second…The second man you had both blinded and gutted before leaving him alive mewling for mercy and his mother. Ser Austin had been horrified and gave the man the mercy he was praying for and had tried to speak to you about it. You had only scowled and shaken your head as you mounted your horse and rode off. He was a good man you knew, but he was too honourable by half and at times he made you question yourself. On one hand you aspired to be like him, a man of honour and a true knight. On the other, you knew the true ways of the world and that the strong always took what they wanted from the weak. A knight was only as noble as the world let him be, and you were even less than that. Faces had begun to plague your dreams once more and as such you had volunteered to stand the first watch to prevent them from haunting you. Your father had continued to mock you and threaten to tell the world your secret shame. Ser Samwell Serrett and his bastard daughter both gnashed their teeth and cursed your name. Your friend Sandor Hill had glared at you with hatred as his skinless face blamed you for his fate. The sudden crack of a tree branch brought you quickly back to reality as your hand went to your hammer. You were wearing only your gambeson in an attempt to keep the cold metal of your armour away from you and you silently cursed yourself for a fool as you whispered angrily for Ser Austin to awaken.
He stirred sleepily but was quickly on his feet with you as he realized the situation you were in. Out of the blackness small bulbs of orange light began to appear that you knew to be torches and you saw that they were growing larger quickly. You whirled about and saw the lights encircled you. By your estimation there were at least fifty men surrounding you and you heard the satisfying rasp of Ser Austins longsword leaving it’s scabbard as the two of you stood back to back to face these men. You saw many of them were armed with simple spears and shields, but one in three were carrying crossbows that were being aimed at you with lethal intent. One man stood out in particular, clad in red plate with an open faced helm that had a crest of horsehair running from his forehead to the nape. He was a large man and stood at least six and a half feet tall before his crested helm and his shoulders were broad and thick. A greatsword was resting on one of his shoulders and his thick moustache bristled at you before he spoke. “Dragon or stag?” His voice sounded like the rumbling of thunder. It was Austin who replied to the man with his distinctly noble sounding accent. “I beg your pardon Ser?” “Dragon? Or Stag? Which did you two fight for?” “We fought at the Trident Ser, both of us are knights and of noble blood. I can assure you…” “DRAGON?” The large knight shouted his interruption as his irritation began to show. “Or stag? Answer before I have my lads fill you full of quarrels like a winter goose.” The greatsword came off his shoulder into a two handed grip as he bore his teeth. Had you been armoured in your plate you would have fancied your odds against the man but wearing only a gambeson and surrounded by nearly fifty additional soldiers. You shook your head as you considered the situation carefully. You watched one crossbowman warily as his finger seemed to toy with the trigger of his weapon and you spat contemptuously into the mud before turning to face their leader.“Who’d you fight for? I don’t remember seeing you upon the Trident?” The man next to the knight bore a standard but in the darkness and torchlight it was difficult to make out the sigil that was sewn onto the fabric. “You want a gut full of feathers? Dragon or stag? This is the last time I’ll ask.” You ground your teeth and watched the large knight raise his arm to signal his men. “Alright lads….” “WAIT!”
You took a sharp breath through your nose. The wrong answer could still mean death at worst and being taken prisoner at best, but dying was a certainty if you kept your silence. Your back straightened as you looked their leader in the eyes. “We were dragon men.” You growled out the words, low and fierce. The knight in command didn’t react to that but only studied you for a moment in the glow of torches. “It’s a dangerous time to be a dragon in these woods. Who’d you fight under?” “We fought under the command of Lord Anders Yronwood of Dorne, with the heavy cavalry Ser.” The words were Austins.“Yronwood…have the two of you names?” “Aye. This is Ser Austin Osgrey, originally of Standfast, and I am Ser Mervyn Reynold of Ember Peak.” His bushy eyebrows raised slightly at the mention of your name but he lets no other tells show. He snapped his fingers and his men started to tighten the circle surrounding you. “Don’t put up a fight. You won’t win. You’ll be treated according to your station. Gather their horses, weapons and armour lads and don’t be lifting any of it or my father will see to it that you lose a hand.” Two men clapped your wrists in irons along with Austins and each of you were flanked my two spearmen with a crossbowman behind you. Your captors marched at a brisk pace and their discipline showed as they marched in time with one another. It took only an hour before a square towerhouse began to fade into view despite the darkness. You were escorted through a low stone wall that was barely chest height and you heard the commotion of sheep and goats although the animals remained out of sight. The large man at the head of the column began to bark out orders once again. “Keep a sharp eye out tonight. Three hour shifts. Jon, take the prisoners horses to the stable and see their looked after. Stoph, Carter, escort Osgrey inside and find him a room. Ensure there is a fire in his room and see he gets fed. Des, go on ahead and tell Esme to prepare my fathers solar. Ser Mervyn and I have much to speak of tonight.”
---What served as the towerhouses solar was a small round room with a hearth on one side and a small glass window on the other. A round table stood in the centre of the room with four chairs in one of which you were seated. Above the fire place hung a banner of mustard yellow and upon it was sewn a red boars head with what looked like dyed wool. You propped your elbows on the table and found it uneven as it rocked with the sudden weight. Your captor then nearly burst through the door with little grace or decorum and sat across from you holding a piece of parchment and a horn of what you presumed was ale.“I knew I’d heard that name before, Reynold. You have any relation to a Tygon Reynold?” Your eyes shot upwards to meet the mans. It was an obvious tell but the shock of hearing Tygon’s name was overwhelming. “I don’t make a habit of talking about what or who I know to strange men, especially those who clapped me in irons in the dead of night and have yet to tell me their name…”“Ser Rustin Hogg of Sows Horn. That’d be this towerhouse in case you were wondering. Son and current Castellan of Ser Roger Hogg, the Knight of Sows Horn. That enough for or do you need my mothers name as well?” His words were curt and impatient and he rolled his fingers on the table as he stared at you.“House Hogg…I don’t recall seeing your banners at the Trident.” “My father and brother were there. They fought alongside our liege, Lord Symonn Hayford. They brought his body back to Hayford and that’s where they now wait. Now…how do you know Tygon Reynold?”“He is my goodbrother, and heir to Ember Peak.” “And who does he fight for?”“The Westerlands I imagine.” “The bloody Westerlands ain’t had a dog in this fight yet. So you tell me what I’m supposed to make of a letter like this…” He threw the piece of parchment at you in irritation and you picked it up with your chained hands and began to read.
To the Knight of House Hogg, I, Tygon Reynold, have been informed of your loyalty towards the crown and King Aerys II Targaryen. The Westerlands have rallied behind Lord Tywin Lannister and have come to aid in the defense of King’s Landing. I have been given command of the vanguard and our way is blocked. A host of Stormlanders have laid siege to Steadhold which limits our hosts ability to reach King’s Landing unharried. I plan to lift the siege and open the gates to the west. If you are loyal men, send a raven or rider to Blacksaithe so we might break this Stormland host and strengthen the Crownlands against the rebel loyal to the rebel pretender, Robert Baratheon – Tygon ReynoldThe seal at the bottom was the rising eagle of House Reynold in a deep red sealing wax. Combined with the flowery script and signature you knew this to be Tygon’s hand. Your jaw was nearly resting on the floor from your shock. The Westerlands were rising.“Well?” You struggled with your chains but managed to pull off the signet ring you wore on your ring finger of your left hand and tossed it to Ser Rustin. “The seal is genuine, and I recognize the writing. That is Tygon’s hand Ser.” “And you think the words are true as well do you? That the Westerlands have risen to join us?” “I do.” “We shall see. I trust you know your letters?” You nodded. Ser Rustin Hogg barked out a shout to the closed door and a serving woman entered and promptly went to a desk to pull forth a small piece of parchment, quill, ink and wax. She placed them before him and he in turn stood so as to stand behind you and gaze over your shoulder. She moved it all in front of you and fetched a candle. “You’ll write exactly as I say. Is that understood?” “Do I have any other choice?” “You can rot in a dungeon cell if you’d prefer…” You picked up the quill by way of answer and dipped it into the acrid smelling ink. “Tygon, I hold command of Sows Horn. I found the tower sacked after the Battle of the Trident, and have garrisoned the ruin with loyal men that remain to me and other survivors of the battle. I have one hundred men. We are ready to assist you…now sign your name.” You wrote no less than three copies of the letter and pressed your signet ring into the sealing wax. Ser Rustin gathered them up in his large and hairy hands.
“I suppose we’ll see where his loyalties truly lie Ser. We’ve no more ravens at Sows Horn but we do have strong riders. They’ll deliver these messages and when they return…well your fate depends on what they have to say. My father has written and informed me Hayford received a similar message.”The room you were given was small, spartan, and infinitely more comfortable than sleeping out in the freezing hell hole that the Crownlands had become. You moved a small wooden stool to sit in front of the hearth and pulled out your locket to gaze at Alyssa’s visage. If Tygon was close you were that much closer to the answers about her you sought. --- 10/05/283 ---There was no window in your room but there was an arrow slit. You could see the winter winds howl outside as more and more snow fell to the ground to build great drifts across the land. It had been over a fortnight since you’d been brought to Sows Horn and when you heard a heavy handed knock on your door you nearly rose out of your seat from excitement. Ser Rustin entered the room, feet thumping against the floorboard from his heavy stride, before he turned to face you with his arms crossed. “One of my men returned last night. He said that Tygon Reynold has commanded you to ride for Hayford to see if it still stands loyal as well, and if it does, that you abandon Sows Horn and aid Lord Hayford when the time comes to relieve Steadhold. My father has sent further word as well. A few knights claiming to hail from the Westerlands have made their way to Hayford. They claim a Ser Mervyn Reynold is their captain and that they are loyalists.” It was good news and more good news. The fact that Tygon had come made you feel more reassured that House Targaryen could win this war, and that men of yours had survived lifted your spirits even further. It was the first bit of good news you’d had in months. “You’re free to go. My father and liege are expecting you at Hayford. Even with the snows it should take you no more than a week. I will have you and Ser Austins horses saddled and prepared. My infantry will be leaving with you. There are two ways to reach Hayford. You may follow the game trail that leads through the forest or you can press through the open fields. My Captain can assist in finding your way through either one, even in this weather. The woods will take near twice as long, but you’ll be less likely to be spotted by rebels.” --- How would you like to proceed? --->Through the wood (Takes twice as long at half the risk of combat)>Through the open fields (Takes half the time but twice the risk of combat) Endurance tests will be made each day to see how the winter storm affects Mervyn as well.

In terms of health, injuries, and wounds Mervyn is sitting at full health.
>>4441463I'll need 4d6 for endurance for the Hogg infantry as a unit, 4d6 for Ser Austin and 4d6 for Mervyn. I'm spitballing this because the book doesn't say how to play effects of the cold without protection but I'm going to ask for an endurance test for every 2 days spent in this storm. so 3 tests starting at DC:9. The morning of the second day had proved an especially cold one. You’d woken wrapped up in your wolfskin clock next to the dying embers of a fire and the cold had still managed to sink it’s teeth into your bones. You rose and stamped your feet to get the blood flowing to them once more and had quickly disassembled your tent and placed it on the frame of your pack horses saddle. The captain of the Hogg infantry, a commonborn named Jace, had informed you that a few men had had an ear go black in the night and one man would certainly be losing his nose but all in all there was little you could do. House Hogg was not a wealthy house and their equipment was ill suited for the winter weather. It made you all the more thankful for your cloaks as you braved the frigid conditions. The cold had dulled their senses and you were soon greeted by a breathless sentry informing you of a unit of enemy soldiers ahead. He said they were lightly armed and wore little to no armour and as such you bellowed out the commands for the infantry to arm themselves and get into formation. Ser Austin and yourself quickly assisted one another in donning plate and mail and the two of you are soon mounted on your horses. You informed Jace that the two of you would flank the enemy once battle was joined and rode into the trees off the main road. The woods were deafeningly silent but the sound of screams and steel soon fill your ears. Digging into your spurs you burst forth from the underbrush in a cloud of white snow and mist. It became evidently clear that the enemy you were fighting were nothing more than smallfolk armed with hoes, pitchforks and knotted clubs. They didn’t even bear a uniform or sigil apart from a scrap of yellow fabric with a crudely drawn charcoal stag on it.

The Hogg Infantry were pressing forward using their spears and shields to great effect and you brought your hammer down in wide sweeping passes, not even deigning to look at the men you were killing. They were beneath you. You do see one mans face however and the look of horror in his eyes as a black clad knight rode him down seemed to be burned into your eyes. As you attempted to shake the image from your head Captain Jace pulled on Pyrite’s reins. “Well done Ser. These weren’t no soldiers though. Little more than boys and old done men. Did Uncle Joe get his cigarettes?
The snows had let up and you had made good time following your encounter with the peasant levy. You’d made such good time in fact that there had been time enough to set up a proper camp and ensure that your allies had sufficient time and wood to build roaring fires to prevent them from suffering the worst effects from the cold. Your evening had been spent sitting on a log with your hands pressed towards the flames. As much as the flames warmed you and the company of men made good conversation you had the sinking and eerie feeling that you were being watched. You’d informed Captain Jace to ensure that the sentries were to patrol in pairs, and come morning more than a few men were whispering of feeling watched during the night. They were proven correct in their suspicions as you were attempting to make camp on the fourth day. A volley of stones came loose from the trees and rattled off of helms and shields. One caught you in the meat of your arm and you cursed in pain. There was no time to dress in your plate but you had time to strap your heater shield to your arm and you joined the line of infantrymen as they surged into the trees…--- Veteran Hogg Infantry Fighting Attack I ---Rolled: 13 vs DC: 7 Two Degrees of Success 4 Damage x 2 = 8 Damage8 Damage – 2 Armour = 6 Damage9 health – 6 Damage = 3 Health --- Trained Harclay Scouts Marksmanship Attack I ---Rolled 11 vs DC: 9One Degree of Success1 Damage x 1 – 4 Armour = -3 Damage9 Health - -3 Health = 9 Health--- Ser Mervyn & Ser Austin Fighting Attack I ---Rolled: 30 vs DC: 27One Degrees of Success5 Damage x 1 = 5 Damage5 Damage – 2 Armour = 3 Damage3 Health – 3 damage = 0 HealthTrained Harclay Scouts Disorganized --- Trained Harclay Scouts Rally Order ---Rolled 11 vs DC: 9 Trained Harclay Scouts Rallied Together you ventured into the trees in search of your enemy. You buried the point of your shield in another mans chest and delivered a contemptuous kick towards his knee. His screams were cut short when the spike of your hammer tore out his throat. I'm doing a long haul drive today that will likely take me about 14 hours so I obviously won't be able to post until later tonight so in the mean time I have a vote/discussion for you guys. >>4442543Oh glad that you give us time to choose because it is hard. Would love to see Tygon being all heroic and stuff or monster Mervyn in Kings Landing.

>>4442543>>Ser Mervyn Reynold, murder and mayhemIn Kings Landing?
Halfway home! I also figured that I should take the time to clarify somethings. There are three major "battles" in the near future. The Lifting of the Siege of Steadhold, the Sack of Steadhold, and the Sack of Kings Landing. This POV shift is for lifting the siege, and lifting the siege alone. And to assuage any worries about missing out on any of them, yes, there will be options to allow for Mervyn to be present through all three of them (to an extent). >>4442642House Harclay are one of the mountain clans of the north that function more like a clan. The OC Northern house is House Larch, which I still really do hope to run one day. But we have a lot more Reynold to do still so it's on the back burner for at least another year or so. Anyways, see you all in another 7 or 8 hours!

The Knight of Sows Horn had ensured that his men were trained well and they began to methodically form lines from which to lunge out of with their spears. Musty furs may have protected the hairy northerners from the cold but they proved insufficient to protect them from cold steel. Captain Jace roared orders to keep formation along with encouraging orders for his men and you were quick to join them. You soon found yourself surrounded by the skirmishing scouts. With men at your every side and no armour to protect your back you found yourself circling and eyeing them warily in a manner not dissimilar to how a pack of wolves might surround a bear. Whenever you lunged outwards to strike a blow two men would attempt to strike your back and force you to whirl around with your shield to defend. The scouts were losing their stomach for the fight however, and even as their leader called for them to rally and form up it was all the man could do to prevent them from scattering into the trees…I'll need 4d6 for the Hogg Infantry and 8d6+1 for Mervyn please and thank you. >>4443842Well that was fast. Gathering information and harassing enemy baggage trains, ensuring that the enemy didn’t sleep and predicting their movements. When it came down to actual fighting however they simply could not hold up to the honest infantryman. Men were falling before their relentless push and all of a sudden the scouts were fleeing. Some threw down their weapons as they fled, other gripped them tightly in their hands but all of them ran. Captain Jace’s infantry were too disciplined to give proper chase without receiving such an order and it didn’t take long until the surviving scouts had disappeared into the snow covered forests. You’d estimated that four of every five of the scouts lay dead or dying. “Captain Jace, have your men search these northerners. Cloaks, food, steel, coin. Take anything they can find.” “Aye Ser.” They quickly began to search the bodies and dispatching the dead but you were called over to one particular man who wore a silver ring in the shape of a crescent moon on his finger. He had a hole in his stomach where a spear had gone through him as he fled and was coughing up blood. “Figured you might want to speak with this one Ser. Seems he was there leader.” The man spat a gobbet of blood onto your boots and gave you a contemptuous look of hatred. “I ain’t tellin’ you southron bastard a fuckin’ thing.”Captain Jace and yourself exchanged a look that said otherwise, but Ser Austin Osgrey spoke up speaking against the idea of torture. “It would be against the code of chivalry Ser. You knelt down into the pink, blood stained snow and grabbed the mans collar in your fist and jerked him upwards towards you. Some ‘o’ the clans swear themselves ta Last Hearth.” “Perhaps you’ve heard how a man slew no less than three of them at the Battle of the Trident?” “Oh aye. Ol’ Mors boys. Elsewise Lord Jon would have ripped your guts out through yer ass and fed them to ya. Besides, it ain’t like you’re going to fix the whole in my gut. I’m near as dead anyways…”His cough like laughter fills your ears once again and you can feel your heart quicken and anger brings a flush of red to your face. “Austin. If you have a problem with getting answers you are free to leave.” “Ser you cannot mean to torture this man. It is an affront to the faith.” “The faith should concern themselves with those who worship the Seven.” “Ser I…” You stood abruptly to interrupt him. “AUSTIN! WE HAVE ENCOUNTED TWO PATROLS ALREADY! WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE COME ACROSS A THIRD? OR TWO AT A TIME? OR A UNIT OF CAVALRY?”
He gawps at you wordlessly and you turned your back on him to focus back on the Harclay man. “How many other men are there in these woods?” Silence. “That many? Where are they? North? South?” The man looked like he might speak but instead only coughed. “Where are they going?” Nothing. Your patience ran dry and you took two fingers and stuck them inside the wound in the mans stomach as you poked about his innards. The man screamed in agony and was quick to beg for mercy, but when you stopped to ask the man your questions again he reverted back to his silence and refused to answer your questions. You carefully unbuttoned your sleeve and rolled it up to your elbow before forcing your hand inside the mans stomach cavity. He thrashed, screamed and cursed. He gnashed his teeth and pulled her hair and threw half fisted punches at you but you found a grip on some organ and clenched. “You want this to stop? Answer my fucking questions. How many men are in these woods?” “TWO HUNDRED! GUERILLAS AND SCOUTS! PLEASE! MERCY! STOP!”“Where?” “NORTH! BOTH ARE NORTH OF HERE! “Where are they going?” “PLEASE STOP! MERCY SER! MERCY!” “Where are they going?” You asked the words calmly as you stared at the man with cold and unblinking eyes. “SOUTH! THEY ARE HEADING TOWARDS KINGS LANDING! GATHERING INFORMATION ON WHAT CASTLES ARE GARRISONED!” You stared at the man for a moment before you let go of his internal organs and pulled your hand free. It was covered in blood and crimson red droplets fell from your fingers that you wiped on the mans furs...“Should we give him mercy Ser?” Captain Jace had unsheathed a cruel looking dagger from his belt and looked ready to do the deed but you paused for a moment before giving your order… --- Give the Harclay man the gift of mercy? --->Yay, he had told you what you wanted and had earned as much>Nay, you still wanted revenge for what had happened to Ser Sandor Hill and this was just the start

“Do it. We’ll march through the night. I want to be rid of this place.” You turned to leave Jace to the butchers work and returned to your half-erected tent and began to pack it away on your donkey. The march through the night had proved a cold and difficult one but march you did. The morning sun had begun to poke it’s rays through the bare branches of the trees and you kept your face buried in your wolf skin. Your feet felt frozen and you clenched your fists and smashed them into your thighs to try and drive some warmth into them. Three men had had fingers go black in the night, and four had lost an ear. One especially unlucky man had lost both of them to the biting cold but you pressed on towards Hayford. --- 16/05/283 ---Jace had assured you that you would reach Hayford by midday tomorrow. You had been tempted to press on and reach the safety of it’s walls and hearths, but Austin Osgrey’s left ear had blackened from the cold and you had ordered the men to set up camp and you had seen to Austin personally. He wore the padded coif that he would normally wear under his helm, and over that was a thick woolen scarf and the wolfskin cloak of the Loyal Reins was about his shoulders but he had still fallen victim of the storm. You hadn’t been unaffected yourself and your lips were cracked and raw and your skin felt like the desert of Dorne. Watching your lieutenant as he unwound his scarf and removed his coif you sucked your teeth. The edges of his ear were stiff, purple and black. He brought his hand around it and cupped it to try and bring some warmth back into it but did so too tightly and you heard a sickening crunch as a small piece of icy flesh fell to the ground. Ser Austin’s eyes went wide but seemed otherwise unaffected. “That’s going to hurt like a bastard when you warm up Austin.” “I…I can’t…it doesn’t hurt at all. Theres no feeling in it.” “We’ll be in Hayford tomorrow. A maester will look at. Hopefully some of it can be saved.” A grimace was all the answer you received…
--- 17/05/283 ---The green and gold fretty hung from Hayfords walls on either side of it’s gatehouse. When Jace flew the Hogg banner the portcullis was raised without even a question. Men were ushered into the main yard and through to the great hall with some urgency to get them out of the cold.Inside you found all of the hearths roaring and the trestle tables were laden with food. Hot stews and fresh breads were the least of the numerous dishes that were set about the tables. Your stomach ached with hunger and your legs were stiff from the cold and days of hard riding but you could not rest quite yet. Instead you approached the high bench where Captain Jace was kneeling before the Lord of Hayford and a man who looked like the splitting imagine of Ser Rustin, only a lifetime of feasting and fighting later. When they were done you approached the bench you were stopped by a guard. “You approach the high bench of Lord Winston Hayford. Who are you?” “I am Ser Mervyn Reynold of Ember Peak. I’ve been sent here by Ser Rustin Hogg along with his infantry.”The Lord of Hayford was a large and powerful looking man. He had wide set shoulders and a thick bullneck and he studied you with dark green eyes that reminded you of late summer grass. He beckoned you closer to the high table and you approached in kind. “Ser Rustin sent a rider ahead of you. So it’s true then what this “Tygon Reynold” writes us? That the Westerlands have risen, Steadhold is under siege and he means to lift it?” “I have not spoken with him milord, but I believe it. He was meant to join me fighting the Reach but was waylaid. House Reynold remains loyal.”“Perhaps if the Westerlands had risen sooner my uncle and cousin might still be alive.” The words had come from a young man who looked nearly twenty. He had his fathers look about him but was of a leaner build. Lord Winston hushed him with a verbal reproach. “Samuel mind your tongue. You bring shame upon Watsons name. Ser Mervyn, forgive my son. He is young and…hot blooded. “I’d be glad to milord, but I have a man in need of a maesters care. The cold threatens to take his ear.” “Him and many others according to Jace.” “Ser Roger…” Ser Roger Hogg had spoken first and Lord Winston and admonished him gently. “Ser Mervyn, while Ser Roger may speak out of turn, he does speak the truth. This winter storm has taken much from many. Why is your man of such importance that he must be seen so urgently?” “He is both a man of noble blood and a knight. Thank you.” The man bowed his head and shrunk away immediately to see to the command while you followed Lord Winston and Ser Roger to the solar. It was not the most lavish you’d seen but it was still a comfortable and snug room. The fire was burning and you could see the snow continuing to fall outside the windows. After everyone was seated, Ser Roger began the discussion in what you took typical Hogg brusqueness.
“This Tygon has informed us he leads a vanguard of nearly six hundred men. His scouts say that nearly two thousand men have laid siege to Steadhold, and are threatening to break through her curtain wall. House Hayford and House Hogg can must another six hundred but it still leaves us at a disadvantage.” “Ser Roger tells it true Ser Mervyn. He informs us that if we wish to lift the siege and open the Crownlands to the western host, we are to march on them immediately. He says that we are to fly our standards high and draw their attention away from Steadhold herself. Once battle is joined, his forces will cross the Blackbridge and take the Stormlanders in the rear, along with the garrison of Steadhold.”“Damnable plan as I see it. Relies too much on timing and surprise. Besides, Steadhold is a strong castle. Let winter set in to the Stormlanders and see if they enjoy the taste of winter.” “Loyalty binds Us, Ser Roger. I will not allow Esmella’s home to be put to the torch. I am honour bound to aid House Malroy but I also share Ser Roger’s apprehensions. Not only would our forces still be outnumbered, I am the third Lord Hayford in as many months, and I worry for her future should I march. My eldest son, Samuel, will wish to join us I am certain. My younger son Wesley will as well despite him being only a squire.” The mans questions were valid ones you knew. Having the larger numbers was often a good indicator of success. You were reminded of the Battle for the Auric Hills and how Ser Samwell Serrett had defeated Tygon with the addition of mere peasant levies. Additionally, the line of succession was something most noble houses took as seriously as the grave and would understandably make any Lord feel hesitant of joining battle, especially one as precarious as the one Tygon suggested. --- What issues to talk about first? --->The line of succession for Hayford >How to bolster your numbers>The tactics themselves

“Are there no loyal men in the Crownlands who can send men to aid us?” Lord Winston grimaced as he scratched at his chin. You could hear his finger nails run over the stubble as his other hand drummed on the table. “Most of our castles are empty Ser Mervyn. Many sent the full compliment of their soldiers north to the Trident, and other have their men protecting their towns and villages.” “Not to mention that old rivalries exist here like everywhere else. House Thorne might have the men but I’d wager they would not raise so much as a finger to help House Malroy. Old enmities run deep. The Blounts will not come out of their castle until the fighting is done and House Chelsted is on the wrong side of the river.” Ser Roger crossed his arms and let his words hang heavy in the air. “That is true as well Ser Mervyn. I fear that we may largely be alone in this…” “Could you not raise your smallfolk into levies?” Lord Winston gawps at the suggestion and Ser Roger harrumphs derisively.“I’ve seen their worth before in my time milords. Sometimes numbers can be the deciding difference in a battle, even if they are like to break in a stiff wind.” “That might be true, but our smallfolk have suffered from this damn second winter. You might not find as many able-bodied men as you might hope.” “This idea concerns me as well Ser Mervyn. Best I have is to raise them anyway, have them sit on their arses back in the woods, and raise a general ruckus blowing horns and the like. Make it at least seem like there is a greater host coming down than there really is, even if they're not expected to do much real fighting.
“I suppose we’ll make do with what men we have.” “We? And how many men have you brought with you? I count a single man.” “Ser Rustin informed me that some westermen had made their way to Hayford. These will be my men.” “Ser Mervyn, I will show you to these men once we are done here. Ser Roger, please hold your tongue. Ser Mervyn please forgive me.” You nodded by way of forgiveness and Lord Winston stood and retrieved a map and placed it out on the table, smoothing out the folds in the vellum and putting stone weights on the corners. It was an intricate map of the crownlands and he pointed at Steadhold with a meaty finger. “Steadhold is a weeks journey along the road in good weather, Nearly double that with a host of men who must needs make camp every night. I would estimate that with this foul weather it will take us nearly three weeks to reach it. >>4445420Just a thought: given the high amount of enemy troops I suspect their quality is lower than that of the loyalist force. Take our cavalry for example, twenty knights of the Loyal Reins can easy cut through a unit of 100. Assuming that we can get it to full strength somehow.Perhaps our own men met a few stragglers on the way and brought them along while fleeing from the Trident?Once we're there, Mervyn should meet the other cavalry unit leaders and join up forces, then occupy a flanking position to mount an attack on ranged enemies. So that means no to occupying Steadhold.
>>4445443Well Joe described them as elite+1, I assume that's taking into account any casualties from the Trident (weren't they elite+2 before that?)
>>4445469I believe downranking was the result of the casualty roll. Game mechanics aside a number of our men has died and the unit needs to replenish its ranks. Consider this a question for Joe.
>>4445469>>4445489The Loyal Reins were downgraded due to the casualty roll to Elite+1. Roughly 10/20 men died on the Trident and the struggles afterwards from skirmishing and the elements. They have however, picked up a few fellow stragglers. So they'll be at their full strength of 20 men but they might not be up to Mervyns usual standard, hence the lowered training.
>>4445555Nice triple-quads!
Not alot of interest in tweaking the battle plans it seems. I'll give this another hour or two before I call it and get to writing.
>>4445666>Not alot of interest in tweaking the battle plans it seemsFrankly I'm not happy with the battle plan. It smacks of someone trying to be too clever for their own good and risks defeat in detail ... but I don't have a better idea so good luck Tygon.
Also here is the "map" of the battlefield and Steadhold as it were. Tygon and the Westermen are approaching from the west via the Gold Road, whereas Mervyn and the Hayford will be coming from the north east along the Gods Eye Road. If it helps stir any creative juices, great. >>4445730That's pretty spot on about what Tygon is doing. You'll see why when you guys get to see through his eyes but he's very keen on making a name for himself.
>>4445420Taking the bridge and the inner wall sounds like it'll take a long time, and that will only begin after our group is already in battle, possibly outnumbered 2-1. Sounds like Hogg has the right interpretation, we're bait. I wonder if it would be better to figure out how to be more survivable bait, or switch the plan up entirely. Do we have any way to communicate with Tygon before the battle, or will any changes we make be a surprise to him?
>>4445787So long as you remain in Hayford you can communicate by raven. So you have a few days in game to figure out the details. I'm drawing a bit of a blank on ideas for it though. Tygon is relying on the Stormlanders sallying out to prevent an "Alesia" type situation happening. As for players suggestions. Maybe Hayford takes every horse it can find so that their forces can flee once the Stormlanders sally out and Tygon can take the castle? Or perhaps they ask Tygon to send more men in skiffs across the river? That kind of tom foolery
>>4445740That map makes me even more nervous. Our rescuers appear to have a big bloody river between them and us. If there's any delay seizing Blackrose Hearth or crossing the Blackbridge then we'll be left facing the Stormlanders solo for even longer. Am I correct in assuming Tyg's reasoning goes something like this>I don't just want to relieve the siege, I want to score a decisive victory and cripple the Stormland forces for prestige or whatever>Using the Hayford force as bait we force the Stormlanders to divide their army - they need to commit enough troops from their reserve to drive off the Hayfords while at the same time keeping the lines around Steadhold strong enough to defeat a sally from within>Once the Stormlander mobile force is locked against the Hayfords then the Westermen can ride in and easily crush the Stormlanders left on siege duty (because those troops have to be spread out around the circumference of Steadhold while the attacking Westerman are one solid force) before riding through Steadhold and engaging the Stormlander mobile force in the rearIt's neat I'll give him that. It also seems like it doesn't take full advantage of the terrain. If Tygon launched the Westermen prong of his attack first then he could easily charge up the Goldroad, murder whatever troops were besieging the Blackrose and secure access to Steadhold. He could do this in complete security because the majority of the Stormlander force would be separated by either the Blackwater Rush or the God's Eye River. The Stormlanders then have to cross the river because that's the only way to regain control of the Blackrose (and without the Blackrose they don't have a siege). Once the Stormlander's are in the middle of crossing the river then he can have the Hayford/Hoggs move in and properly catch them with their pants down. Do we know anything about the distribution of the Stormlanders? Say whether they're evenly spread around Steadhold or have they clustered their troops in any particular area?
>>4445820Blackrose Hearth and the wall around it dont exist right now. Those were made 2 years later in House Malroy quest
>>4445820That's almost exactly what he wants to do. He's been given an order to have Steadhold under his control by the time the main host arrives and he plans to do so. A couple things to note on that map are as follows:1. It's an updated map. Blackrose Hearth isn't actually a thing yet. It's more of a crumbling tower. 2. The Stormlanders have broken through the outer wall and are mostly contained within laying siege to the actual castle. Mervyn and Winston could certainly write Tygon and ask if he might try to take the Blackbridge first, using his smaller forces on a narrow front to eliminate the numerical disadvantage
>>4445837>Blackrose Hearth isn't actually a thing yet. It's more of a crumbling tower.Ah, that changes things>The Stormlanders have broken through the outer wall and are mostly contained within laying siege to the actual castle. And so does thatI think Tygon may have the most workable plan then. If we ask him to assault the bridge first then 1. I'm not sure we'll get the separation of the Stormlander forces that we need to overcome their numerical superiority; and,2. If they have any troops in towers along the outer wall (if the outer wall exists/has towers) or just sufficiently high up the sides of Aeson's Hill then they'll see our forces coming from a mile away and will have all the warning necessary to regroup whereas Tygon's forces might be somewhat screened by Steadhold Town and the Princewood. A cautious deployment of the Hayford/Hogg force might be the best we can do in the situation. Quick charge in and out with the two units of cavalry while peppering the foe with arrows and bolts. Keep the infantry back with the ranged units and begin an early orderly retreat, kiting away whatever forces the Stormlanders through at us. That way we'll spend less time in protracted combat and we'll drag whatever troops come after us even further out of position than if we just charged straight in. They'll probably realise its mere harassment but even if they recognise that it doesn't do them any good, they still need to commit a good-sized force to fending us off or we'll simply stop retreating and charge them.
>>4445900I can work with this. Anyhow, I got called up for job so I won't be running tomorrow so in the meantime enjoy Tygons character sheet. He's still young and fairly inexperienced hence the warfare score of 4. https://1drv.ms/x/s!Am-XCwIRrb9HiEoLqJMCPeWWMmsn?e=fsWule
>>4446280>Going from 6D+4B+1 Fighting to 3D+1BBetter not get into any personal fights, Tygon.
>>4446280>HaughtyHuh. Was Tygon initially a jackass to Mervyn when he won Alyssa's hand, especially with that Family motivation? I honestly can't recall whether or not that was mentioned.
>>4445186Nice. Since we’re rolling for enemies, is there likelyhood we could chance upon potential allies who’d be willing to join our cause?>>4445900Yeah I think a skirmish/harassment orderly fallback might be the prudent approach to 1) draw them out because they’d get angry at being peppered (they either take incoming arrows or come out to meet us and maybe break ranks and get cut down), this pulling them away from the siege, and 2) surviving being bait in a trap
I think Mervyn might be developing issues.

Tygon got raped by House Serrett and isn't even a knight. Who put this little jobber in charge of a vanguard of so many men? Is Tywin just trying to kill him off?
>>4448392Probably due to nepotism
>>4448396That still doesn't add up. I'm struggling to see what Reynold brings to the table that the other 2 houses don't bring more of. Influence? Based on what? Serrett and Drox bring way more men to the table and also men of higher social ranking. If the actual Lord Gordon Serrett is here then why would he let his 0-1 brother in law command him? Then there's Drox who we know had the lord around from Malroy. He brings way more men too.
>>4448415Could also be that he is just part of the Vanguard and moved forward ahead of them in the hope of winning glory
>>4448439That would make a lot more sense with the Proud vice. It would only take a little lie about being in command and he's lied before. Good point.

That'll all be explained when we get to his POV though. >>4448564This made me laugh out loud. Anyways, I should have some time to get some writing done tomorrow but it might only be one post worth, I'll be continuing on Tuesday though for sure!
“I’d agree with Ser Roger milord, only I would have us be more of a lure than bait. We march up and make ourselves seen and set up out of bow range from the castle but within sight. They’ll come out to parley with us and we’ll pick a fight. If they’ve broken through Steadholds curtain wall, they can’t afford to come under siege while laying one. When they come out to battle with us we hold until they’re a fair distance from the castle and we flee to a more defensible position. If all goes according to plan then Tygon will take the castle and these Stormlanders will be stuck between a hammer and an anvil.”Lord Winston Hayford grimaced and looked to Ser Roger Hogg who only shook his head and muttered gruffly under his breath. His gaze fell upon the map once more and traced a thick finger along the Gods Eye Road towards Steadhold.“I ill like this but I see no other option. Esmella’s home and heir are in danger Ser Roger. Loyalty binds us to this cause.”“As you say milord. What about Samuel and Wesley? They’ll be wantin’ to come as sure as the sun is warm.” That brought a long sigh from Winston as he pinched at the bridge of his nose.“I believe that Ser Horace still serves as Samuels sworn sword does he not?”“He does.” “I know Ser Horace to be a leal and loyal man. Samuel will ride with us with Ser Horace at his side. Wesley though…Ser Lyle fell at the Trident and he finds himself without a knight to squire for. --- Ser Mervyn’s Persuasion (Convince) Test ---Rolled 17 vs DC: 15, 24Results: One Degree of Success, Failed“My lord, I myself am without a squire if your son is in need of a man to attend.”“Wesley is a willful boy, but a diligent one. How is it you came to find yourself without a squire Ser Mervyn? Did your last one fall at the Trident?”“No my Lord, my last squire was sent to serve a different master for…political reasons. I serve as Master at Arms at Ember Peak and am House Reynolds best sword, or hammer as it were. Your boy will be safe with me.” Lord Winston considered that for a moment as he crossed his arms and pursed his lips. “My son will be safe Ser Mervyn. He will serve as your squire to prepare for the battle, but on no account is he to take the field with you. Is this understood? He will prepare your tent, tend your horse and assist you in dressing for battle but when battle is joined he will remain with the baggage train away from the fighting. Under no circumstances is he to take to the field. I will not risk both of my sons on the same battlefield.” “Understood my Lord.” “Ser Roger, prepare the men for battle. I wish to be ready to march when these snows stop falling or three days pass, whichever happens first. Also, please instruct a servant to escort Wesley to my solar. That will be all.” Ser Roger left with only a stiff nod and left the two of you in relative silence. You poured yourself a cup of wine from a small side table and rejoined Lord Winston. The wine was tart and not of exceeding quality but you sipped at it anyways. “Do you have children Ser Mervyn?”
“I do. Two sons and a daughter.” “How old?” “My eldest is will…Seven…will nearly be two. My other two are twins born a mere few months past.” “My own boys are nearly men grown but I still remember when they were of an age with your own. I was never blessed with daughters but if I may offer a piece of wisdom Ser?”You gave the man a nod. “I lost my brother and nephew to this war. Battle is a common place to lose a son and yet, leaving them behind is as sure a way to lose them. I would rather leave Wesley behind here at Hayford where he will be safe behind her walls, but I know he would come to resent me for it. Ensure my son comes home to Hayford Ser Mervyn.”“I will.” The two of you were interrupted by a knock on the door and a young man entered that bore a common look to Lord Winston, although smaller by half. He might have been ten and six but it was difficult to tell with the smoothness of his cheeks. “Wesley, this is Ser Mervyn Reynold. You will be squiring for him when we leave to lift the Siege of Steadhold. You are to follow his every command. Is this understood?”“Yes Father!”His common forest green eyes sparkled with the excitement of youth when his father told him he would be squiring for you during the coming battle. “Now Wesley, if you would be so kind as to escort Mervyn to the Westermen who have made their way to Hayford. Ser Mervyn, I must bid you good night.”
Wesley Hayford led you through Hayfords halls with a deftness that could only come from having lived a lifetime within it’s walls. You went down a flight of stairs, took three right turns followed by two lefts, through a kitchen and into another long hallway before coming to what appeared to be a small hallway guarded by two men at each door. “The men have been placed under watch here Ser.” He gestured to the hallways at large and you began to go through the rooms. “SER!” Cardyn had shouted out and nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw you. He embraced you in a tight embrace and shook you by the shoulders. “What in the Seven fucking hells are you doing here?” “It’s a long story. How did you find yourself this way?” “After we scattered, a few of us managed to group together. We looked for you and Ser Austin but we couldn’t find you. I managed to find Ser Martin Mullendore and Ser Walder. Walder’s family fought for the rebels and so we managed to slip into their camp for a time. When we gave them the slip we managed to find a few more knights loyal to the dragon. They aren’t as good as the twins or Ser Art, but they’ll serve our purposes fine.” “Good work Cardyn. But I’ll be the judge of if they’re good enough to serve in the Loyal Reins. How have you been treated?”“Well enough I suppose. But these fucking guards seem deaf whenever we need a chamber pot emptied or a meal brought to us before it gets cold.” He had raised his voice loud enough to make sure that they heard his complaints. “Might want to speak with Walder as well. He has a little memento for you.”“What sort of memento?” Cardyn only grinned by way of response. You found Walders chambers easily enough and he grinned when questioned about his gift. The memento turned out to be three black iron chains, one from each of the three Umbers that you had slain at the Battle of the Trident.“Figured you might be able to fasten you cloak with one of them. Keep the rest as a token of that battle. Might as well wear them with pride “Giantslayer”.” You grinned darkly at the man and clapped him on the shoulders. You may have fled from the Battle of the Trident and lost men. But now you were back with men you could call friends, and would be marching to war to lift a siege that stood outside another friends halls. After a long night spent with your men you made for the room that had been assigned to you. It had a small window that allowed light to shine through and you could see a red sun rising in the east…--- Break ---Alright I’m not call it here, just preparing to switch to Tygon’s perspective. Forgive me because it might take a hot minute>>4452443Sorry I just saw this now so I won't dedicate a scene to it but I'll assume that Mervyn told him about it. --- 02/06/283 ------ Tygon Reynold ---The cold winter air stung at the inside of your nose and lungs as you took in a sharp breath as you looked out from the trees at the castle of Steadhold and the Blackbridge Tower. It was a difficult castle to take, as evidenced by the Stormlander host that had surrounded it to only a modicum of success. A shiver ran down your back from a thought far colder than any winter wind as you remembered Lord Tywin Lannisters words.“The road to King’s Landing will be open by the time my forces arrive.” His tone left no amount of uncertainty at what might happen if you had failed. You would not fail here though. You had been placed in command with Lord Gordon Serrett as well as Lord Dresden Drox. For two of you though, the command was not so much a reward but a test of loyalty and capability. Lord Gordon was in a similar predicament to yourself. Lord Tywin was far shrewder than his brother and he had seen his involvement with your mother for what it was. Lord Drox had volunteered however, to ensure there was an older, wiser and more loyal man to oversee things. Those words still sent pangs of shame and guilt through your innards. Your father had laid dying when you’d left Ember Peak to march with the Western Host, poisoned by your mothers hand. You had always known there was little love between them but for her to murder him. Your mind ran to a time when Ser Mervyn had spoken to you about a threat made by your mother to his son and how you had scoffed at him for it. Evidently, he had been right and you owed him an apology for your naivety, for your part in all that had transpired in Ember Peak since he had left to fight at your mothers behest. There had been a summons for the Lord and Lady of Ember Peak to journey to Casterly Rock. The letter had contained little warmth and the night before they were to depart, Elleanor Reynold had disappeared from Ember Peak along with most of it’s garrison, leaving your father dying from some poison. Maester Aethan had saved his life but he had remained bed-ridden and you had gone to Casterly Rock in his place…
You shook your head as if to banish the shameful memories from your mind. That was the past and upon the morrow you would redeem your family’s honour and your own pride. You looked to the scouts who had accompanied you to the front and gave them a nod as you returned to the camp you’d erected a few hours away. Trees had been felled, ditches dug into cold and stony soil and tents erected into orderly rows. You had been encamped here for more than a week as you waited for a rider from the Hayford host. The man had finally arrived this morning and the camp was as bustling as if ant hill had been disturbed. With battle imminent on the morrow it would be crucial to decide where you would place yourself, as well as to decide what unit would lead the charge across the Blackbridge into Steadhold proper. Upon entering your tent you found your squire scouring your gilded plate to a mirror polish. “Robin, I have need of Lords Drox and Serrett. Be a good lad and ensure they find themselves to the war pavilion.” The boy nodded and dutifully put away his cleaning materials and left the tent without a word. He had been the son of the smith in the Auric Hills, and had proved a dutiful if quiet boy. One who did not complain about squiring for a man without a knighthood however…You yourself made your way to the pavilion to wait for the company you had summoned…--- What unit will Tygon Reynold command/fight with? ------ Westermen Forces - 740 men - ---Reynold 2nd Infantry – Trained InfantryReynold Longbowmen – Trained ArchersThe Knights of Silver – Veteran Cavalry (House Serrett)The Rivalless – Elite Cavalry (House Serrett)Serrett 1st Infantry – Trained InfantryDrox 1st Infantry – Trained InfantryDrox 2nd Infantry – Trained InfantryDrox 1st Crossbowmen – Veteran CrossbowmenDrox 2nd Crossbowmen – Veteran Crossbowmen

>Reynold 2nd Infantry The lords Serrett and Drox each came at their own pace. Lord Gordon showed up in his multi-coloured finery and resembled the proud peacock that was his sigil, despite the man himself looking as plain and common as a peasant. Lord Drox however took his time in his coming despite wearing boiled leather and mail about his thin form. He was a sour looking old man and he wore his disdain openly on his face. “You summon me? Lord Tywin gave you no command over me. I gave myself willingly to this cause so as to ensure that a success was achieved. I will not be summoned by the son of a treacherous viper and an inept simpleton.” You took a sharp breath in through your nose and let it come out softly through your mouth. You would not rise to his bait. “Lord Tywin ordered me to ensure that the Goldroad was open to his host so yes, I do summon you my lord.”“As to why he gave you such an order is still beyond me. In Castle Drox, traitors and their conspirators are not given positions of honour. They are hung from the battlements and left for the crows to eat.” Lord Tywin had asked you plainly if you had known of her intent to murder your father. He had asked in simple terms if you had known about her intent to lay claim to Castamere and marry Joanna to a Farman. He had then listened silent and unmoving as you had pleaded your innocence as you told him that you had no such idea. Perhaps you had been a blind fool, or perhaps you had just never opened your eyes but that was a mistake you did not plan on making again. You’d told him how you had conspired with Joanna to ensure that the marriage did not bear children and that it would come undone. The Lord of Casterly Rock had raised an eyebrow at this but kept his silence. “You would have me believe you did this out of loyalty to House Lannister?” His words had been curt and stony. You had told him that you had wished for your sister to wed Ser Leroy Lannister of Lannisport. That had been part of the peace talks. Joanna was to wed Ser Leroy before the host marched, and House Reynold would forfeit any and all claims to Castamere for all time. You had made those promises in the bowels of the Rock. It was on the road that you realized that your trials to prove your loyalty were not over.
“As all traitors should. The eagle still flies high, and proudly, behind the lion my Lord Dresden. As I intend to show to all the Westerlands by proving my worth.” He grumbled behind his teeth and spat onto the ground but he kept his tongue. Gordon Serrett however only listened intently on the conversation. Lord Tywin had summoned him to Casterly Rock as well, and had “spoken” with him at length regarding his knowledge of Elleanor’s plans.“Anyhow, I have decided on a plan of action. House Hayford and my goodbrother will array themselves for battle. Once it is joined they will sound a signal of three long horn blasts. Lord Dresden, you will have the honour of having your men carry the ram to the Blackbridge Tower ensuring that our way is open. Your crossbowmen and my archers will give you the covering fire they require. Lord Gordon and I will follow suit with the second wave to secure Steadholds outer ring. Once we’ve done that, we will march out to assist the Hayfords and catch the remainder of the Stormlander host in a pincer.”“I won’t be risking my men for your own glory.”Lord Drox made to stand but Ser Lorcan Lydden stirred from his corner of the tent and caught him before he could rise. He thrust him back downwards and pinned him in his seat as you stared at him before waving off Ser Lorcan.--- Tygon Reynolds Status (Breeding) Check ---Rolled: 20 vs DC: 12, 18Results: Two Degrees of Success, One Degree of Success“I believe you will my Lord. This host is under my command and unless you wish to hang from battlements to feed the crows you will follow my orders. Rest assured my Lord, I would not have you assault the bridge with your own person. You may command your crossbowmen, or return to Lord Tywin himself as you see fit. You’ll leave your men behind though.” His face began to redden as he blustered, but when he looked over his shoulder to Ser Lorcan he cursed quietly and consented to lead his crossbows from across the river. “Excellent. Once Lord Gordon and I have taken the bridge, I will expect you to bring your crossbowmen to the eastern facing wall to provide us with the necessary ranged support.”

I think Joe is doing a great job at balancing things under the circumstances, but I'm concerned future votes will be decided more based on expected outcomes than on what Merv would do. That's all.
>>4452667>With the Reynold Archers, ensuring that Sub-Commander Lord Dresden follows your orders to the letterGoddamit Elleanor, now why did you have to go and do that? No disrespect to Joe, he's been doing a great job handling this so far. And the house is pre-generated, so no house creation thread, but no more talk of that in this thread, please.
>>4452804>What do you mean?Merv is the only Westerman, besides randos, that was sent by their liege to fight for the Loyalists in this war.Elleanor leaving is a sign of her seeing the war is not ending well for the Loyalists and she's overplayed her hand. Castamere was a deal with the Targaryen Small Council. Joanna's marriage was a play at building a an anti-Tywin alliance, and likely one with Loyalist tendencies. All things considered Merv's presence here is a very clear sign that Elleanor is in open rebellion of her liegelord who until now has remained ideal in this war. Rhaegar is dead, the war is on the side of the Rebels, Elle isn't stupid she knows the sort of man that Tywin is. The tides of fate have caused her to show her hand and she overplayed in her effort to ascend in the wake of the war.
>>4452813Oh I see, thanks for clearing that up. I wouldn't say she overplayed her hand, she just gambled and lost. Joe has changed the dates (Sack of King's Landing is exactly a fortnight after Battle of the Trident in canon as per Ned's PoV, but here we've gone two months) so I don't know the exact timeline here, but it was still a toss-up before the Battle of the Trident, even leaning in the favor of the Loyalists. Even now if Mace Tyrell moved his ass he could win the war single handedly with his Reach doomstack. The Westerland host must have left before the Battle of the Trident, so at that point Elleanor still had a good reason to believe that the Loyalists would win.
>>4452813Yep, I think it might have been as simple as her sending men off to fight on behalf of the Targs without Tywin's leave, which was a major gamble that didn't pay off.

“No Ser Lorcan, I’ll have you by my side. Your skill would be wasted amongst the archers. Lord Dresden may be a sour old man but even he is not so foolish as to prevent us from doing our duty.”“As you say milord.” “Lord Gordon, have you in any mind to who you will command?” “I will ride with the Rivalless.”“Of course. I will rely on you to push through the outer wall and out through an eastern gate so as to relieve the Hayford forces. What of my brother?” “Tyrus will be riding with me. He has skill enough and perhaps giving him a release from his anger will do the boy some good.” “I trust you will keep him safe? He may be a difficult lad but he is still my brother, not to mention that he is still betrothed despite his insistence that he will never marry.” Gordon Serrett simply shook his head in disapproval. “Yes, he has asked me for leave to return to Ember Peak many times to look for some peasant girl who bore him some bastard whelp.”“Yes, I believe he named the child Aemon, after Aemon the Dragon Knight. I fear that she disappeared from Headwaters following the child’s birth. I had sent a few men to find her but they turned up with nothing.” “Best not to mention that to him, at least until this war is over. He’s as stubborn as a mule and as headstrong as a stallion. I think he’d likely leave for home in order to try and find her despite the consequences.” “I fear you may be right my Lord.” “If that is all, might I be allowed your leave so as to go and prepare my men?” --- Any further questions for Lord Gordon Serrett? ---

>>4453527No, I'm happy.
>>4453552>Elyse'sWho? The sister? She was always condescending with us.However, what of Braxes? Why didn't Tygon's father in law send any troops with him?
>>4453619That was Joanna to Mervyn. We are Tygon currently. Elyse is the secret bastard younger sister that fostered in Lannisport before being married.
>>4453527Has Tyrus made any friends? I worry about him he wasn't very social before, aside from family Marvyn and his loyal reins were it, and that didn't exactly end well.
>>4453644Probably been looking for Rose
>>4453619Maybe he's not pleased about basically stepping in dog shit with marrying his firstborn daughter to a possible traitor house. Idk how House Reynold isn't going to be a social pariah in the west after all of the treachery. Not that I mind. That sounds fun to play through.
>>4453715It is all fun until Tygon can't fulfill his promise, until we have to raise two sickly children and take care of our bedridden wife all the while fending off every fence-sitting motherfucker in the west.
>>4453720Sounds like an actual challenge. Fine by me.
>>4453552Noted. >>4453619Joanna was always condescending towards Mervyn, but he barely knows anything about Elyse as she grew up in Lannisport. As for House Brax, Lord Andros is definitely doing some distancing from House Reynold. He and Elleanor had some mutual goals together which was part of the reason for the marriage between Tygon and Andrea, but now with the public knowledge he's gone quiet. That doesn't mean he's completely out of the loop but publicly he's distancing himself. Tygon has actually been speaking to him about a piece of land high up in the mountains with a mine that went dry a few years ago. >>4453644He's a fairly anti social kid but he did actually make a friend in his time at Silverhill! A boy his own age and a cousin of Lord Gordon. >>4453715>>4453720>>4453797The second arc of this quest is going to be a blast man. Even if Mervyn dies and we have to play as Tygon it'll still be a time.
>>4453838We're still in the first arc?!
>>4453844Lol yeah. The first one was the longest, the second one should only be between 5-10 threads, then the third one consists of the Greyjoy Rebellion and other shenanigans. I've got a lot more work to do with House Reynold yet.
“Just a moment my Lord. The campaign trail has been a busy one and I would talk of a more personal matter. How fares Elyse in Silverhill?” “She was well when I last saw her. She has taken to the castle well my lord, and the servants love her well. She was pregnant when I left Silverhill myself. She swears it’s a boy but I suppose all women do don’t they?” “That they do.” Andrea had sworn that Allison would be born a boy and yet she had come out a squalling red faced baby girl. The thought still warmed your heart when you thought about her. The small wisps of hair on her head were blonde but her eyes reminded you of her mothers. The two of you had tried to conceive again before you left Ember Peak but you’d left again before she could show any signs. Now you had news of another niece or nephew on the way. Uncomfortable thoughts threatened to push into your mind but you banished them for the time being. Your family wouldn’t suffer from your mothers actions if you could help it. From Ruin, Rebirth. Those were the words of your family and from the ruins you would rise like a phoenix. “I’m glad to hear it my lord. Have you put any thought to names?” “Gilford, if it’s a boy like she claims. Perhaps Gillianne if it’s a girl.” “Good strong names my lord. Has she enjoyed the company of her brother?” “In truth Tygon, she can hardly stand to be in the same room as him. She calls him a red ass because he’s so stubborn.” “Such as siblings are at times.” You loved all of your siblings, but Elyse and James had been two that you had hardly known. Elyse had left for Lannisport at a young age and James even younger for Goldengrove. It did not surprise you to hear that Tyrus might get under the skin of your youngest sister, for he even managed to grate on your own nerves at times. Particularly when the topic of marriage came up. “That will be all Lord Gordon. We march to the edge of the wood at first light.” “Of course my Lord. I shall see you on the morrow.”--- Break ---Short run today, but I need to do some prep work for the battle, and my schedule is getting busy. I'm aiming to continue and get a large part of the battle done tomorrow evening at about 6:30pm MST. In the mean time, if you have any questions feel free to ask, if not, see you all tomorrow!
>>4453797Agreed, sounds fun>>4453851Nice
The morrow had come sooner than you might have liked. You had awoken far before the break of dawn and had woken Robin to dress you in your gilded plate. The boy had been groggy and slower than you would have liked but dressing for battle had been enough of a distraction to keep your mind occupied. The morning sun now glittered off of the gilded steel and the rubies that decorated the breastplate. Ser Mervyn’s armour bore a similar motif of an eagle picked out in the precious stones but his midnight black armour cast a certain darkness to the rubies. Your own seemed to glow in the sunlight and take on a bright hue not dissimilar to blood. It seemed to want to fly free from the confines of your armour and burst out towards the rising sun as you made your rounds of your camp. By now it was as bustling as you had ever seen it. Men going this way and that, Captains barking orders and getting soldiers into ranks until finally all were ready to march. You rode atop your destrier as the host made it’s way eastward towards the edge of the Princewood in a staggered formation. First the Drox infantry carrying the ram that you had assigned them, followed closely by your ranged forces so as to give them covering fire. The rest of the infantry and cavalry followed behind them as you made your way through the trees to conceal your advance. You made your way to the very edge of the trees to watch the battlements as you waited to hear the horns and the trumpets of Ser Mervyn and House Hayford. You toyed with the longsword that hung from your belt idly and tapped your foot impatiently. “It’ll come soon enough my Lord.” Ser Lorcan had ridden up beside you and leaned forward in his saddle. “The worst part of battle is waiting for it to start. You get used to it.”“I’m not a lord Ser Lorcan. My father still yet lives even if he barely clings to life, and this isn’t my first battle Ser.” “As you say. This may not be your first, but seasoned soldiers don’t look so anxious before a battle.”“You have your trumpet ready?” It was an obvious ploy to draw the talk from the sinking pit that was making it’s home in your bowels and onto your sworn sword. “That I do, and I’m ready to issue your commands Tygon…Warhorns loomed in the distance. Men began to scramble on the walls of Steadhold and more horns and trumpets made their replies. You waited for long moments as you imagined a parley happening. Your heart pounded in your chest and your breathing was short and fast. Another series of hornblasts followed suit and soon the feintest sounds of battle began to drift in on the wind. You turned to Ser Lorcan and gave the man a nod. He brought his own horn to his lips and let loose three long blasts that signaled your men to begin their advance…

Lord Dresden and the ranged support began to arrange themselves in ranks on the banks of the Gods Eye river and send their own volleys towards the castle. The distraction of the Hayford forces had been to your advantage and allowed the ram to get into position relatively unmolested but the Stormlanders shock was beginning to fade and you saw a unit of archers beginning to cross the bridge and ascending the tower to fire down upon the infantry...I’ll need 5d6 for Athletics for the Drox Infantry there guys.

Men fell but their training remained strong as the men who did not have hands on the ram raised their shields to cover their comrades. You ordered Ser Lorcan to signal the rest of your men to emerge from the trees and he did so at once, playing a litany of shrill notes on his trumpet that sounded bright in the early morning air. You dismounted to join the Reynold 2nd Infantry at the head of the second wave should the first fail in breaking down the gate. With arrows raining down on them it became obvious that the Drox Infantry needed to take a more defensive posture. “Ser Lorcan, signal the Drox Infantry. I want the first with their shields raised high and tighter around that ram. I want the second in a tortoise shell formation.” The man merely nodded his head and brought his trumpet to his lips. Scouts had reported the strength of the Stormland forces numbering nearly 1800 hundred men and if even half of them had left Steadhold to do battle on the western side of the river they would be outnumbered considerably. The volleys that rained down on Lord Drox’s infantry had lessened significantly when they had fallen under the fire themselves. The crossbowmen were particularly dangerous you saw as one man fell from the bridge and tumbled into the frigid black water of the river. The ram pounded against the gates repeatedly but they refused to crack. You stared at the rest of the tower. It was half a ruin with one side exposed and open. A unit of men could possibly climb it if given the opportunity. It could be a difficult proposition however in plate and mail but it could be possible if the Drox infantry kept up the pressure at the gate. “Ser Lorcan, I need that tower taken.”“Aye my Lord. That gate is proving troublesome.” “I fear that the gate may need a more personal hand to raise it.” “I’m the man to do it my lord. We’ve enough ladders to make it in through that damaged wall there, although we’ll be awful exposed to the archers on that wall.” You nodded your head to Ser Lorcan in approval and turned to address your men.“LOYAL MEN OF EMBER PEAK! NOW IS THE TIME TO PROVE YOUR METTLE! WE HAVE BEEN TASKED WITH TAKING STEADHOLD BACK FROM THESE STORMLANDERS! LET US PROVE TO THEM THE COURAGE OF THE WEST!” Your men roared their approval. They were familiar faces to you having grown up around many of them and you felt your heart swell with pride. You had led these men into battle before and led them to defeat. That they still trusted you to lead them now was enough to make you wish to join them at the front and wet your sword with blood. That would be a folly however. You were not a swordsman as your brother or goodbrother might have been. Your mother had taught you that it was just as noble to wield other men than it was to wield a sword.“FROM RUIN, REBIRTH! THESE ARE THE WORDS OF EMBER PEAK! LET US FIND RUIN HERE THIS DAY! IF IT IS OUR OWN WE SHALL BE REBORN AGAIN IN SONG! IF IT IS THEIRS MAY THEY BURN IN THE SEVENTH HELL!” “FROM RUIN, REBIRTH LADS! WHEN I’M REBORN I WANT TO BE FUCKING TALLER! FOLLOW ME BOYS!” Cheers and laughter followed Ser Lorcan’s comment but he took off at a jog towards the tower as a few men brought forth crudely fashioned wooden ladders and charged down towards the tower.

Ser Lorcan fought with a smile on his face and laughter on his lips where Ser Mervyn fought with a cold and silent fury that would only be broken to encourage his men. He urged them on and they climbed upwards towards the tower so that they might raise the gate and allow the Drox Infantry to charge through the gap. Across the river the gate was opening to allow a unit of spearmen to advance into the middle of the bridge and deploy themselves in a wall of bristling spear points for such an eventuality. The man trumpeted out the commands hurriedly. The Drox Infantry on the bridge snapped to their orders and abandoned their formation to resume the hammering of the gate as futile as it had proved. The fleeing first however had ignored the trumpeted commands. You looked to the standards that the men behind you were holding and crossed the ground to them to rip the proud lion of Lannister from a spearmans hands and walked into the middle of the Gold Road and planted the banner down firmly in the way. The men leading the rout slowed and stopped before you and the rest were forced to follow suit as you stood before them alone. “RALLY YOURSELF MEN OF THE WESTERLANDS! WE DO NOT FLEE THIS DAY! LOOK TO YOUR BANNERS! BUT JOIN ME IN TAKING THAT BRIDGE AND I SHALL SEE YOU WELL REWARDED MEN! NOW TURN AND FACE YOUR FOES MEN!” You could see shame in their faces and the impact of your words made their impact. They turned and began to organize themselves once more. “Who amongst you leads here?” Silence was your answer until one man answered quietly. “Captain Declan fell on the bridge m’lord…” “What’s your name soldier?” “St-stoph m’lord.” “Stoph, you’ve been raised to Captain until further notice. How is it even mechanically possible to break the gate of some dilapidated tower? Better, banded-metal rams? Having a unit of engineers construct a proper siege engine with suspending chains?
>>4456710A proper ram would help, as would a trebuchet or catapult, but all of those require engineers which Tygon currently has none of. In crunch terms, even having a unit of veteran infantry to do it would likely have been enough to break it down in a couple of turns. Now, I have two votes for you guys today because I'm quite busy helping a friend. --- How to take Goldgate Tower? --->Attempt to ram down the tower gate>Use the ladders immediatelyThis tower is much higher before you reach the top and will require alot more athletics tests. The ram is possible but will also take alot more time. Well unfortunately I won't be able to get much running done today but I should be able to tomorrow. With that in mind, I'll give you guys another vote to keep some interest. What role does Tygon want to take going across this bridge? The Drox 2nd Infantry are going to be fighting a unit of infantry as the Reynold 2nd come down from the tower and Tygon begins to cross himself. The question is though, does he want to make a name for himself? Does he want to be the man to climb the ladders to Steadhold proper? Or does he want to be the first man to enter her through the gates. Or maybe he wants to avoid the front lines altogether. I should have a healthy length update tomorrow afternoon with all of these votes at least. --- What part does Tygon play in breaching the curtain wall? --->Scaling the ladders and raising the second gate (Goal: Fame)>Being the first man through the gate once it has been opened (Vice: Pride)>Remaining back to enter with the ranged contingent (Motivation: Family)

>>4457755Very cool tie in with his personality traits.>Remaining back to enter with the ranged contingent (Motivation: Family)I see him as a competent commander but already having no illusions about becoming a warrior.
>>4457755>Being the first man through the gate once it has been opened (Vice: Pride)The moderate choice, risky but not too much.
>>4457755>Being the first man through the gate once it has been opened (Vice: Pride)I’d temper this by not having him be the literal first person through, Tygon is smart enough to not be a “lead from the front” commander, but can still be a “lead from the frontline”.We already sent a man up the ladders so no point going ourselves. We should get some credibility as a bit of a warrior and go through the gates rather than a reputation for always hanging back and “commanding” while others do the fighting. But Tygon is no Merv and he knows it.

The gate set into the curtain wall was closed and barred behind the men of the Stormlands and behind the Drox Infantry was yourself as well as Ser Lorcan and your own men spilling out from the ruined tower. You heard screams of dying men as well as the loud and deep splashes when some unfortunate man had been pushed over the stone wall and fallen into the icy waters of the Gods Eye River. Trumpets sounded, steel rang out and behind you the Serrett Cavalry were preparing to charge once the bridge was clear. The crossbows and archers were continuing their exchange with their adversaries on the wall but it was amounting to little as they hid being their merlons and battlements. “Ser Lorcan!” You called out behind you as the Reynold Infantry shored up their ranks behind you. “The gates are too strong Ser Lorcan. We’ll use the ladders once we’ve gotten through this infantry.” He looked up at the tall gatehouse and grimaced. “The tower was a hard fought thing even against archers, and that one was ruined. I doubt they have oil but they can rain a lot of stones and other things down on us. It’s along climb Tygon…” You nodded and ran your tongue along your fake golden teeth. Tyrus or Mervyn would have volunteered to help lead such an endeavor. Such a task was something that the singers would write songs of but you knew that wasn’t your role. A smile was on your lips but it soon departed when you walked through the gates and into the small town contained within Steadholds curtain wall. Many of the buildings had been sacked and pillaged as the Stormlanders had sought out provisions for themselves during the siege. Your infantry had moved through the gates and were followed by the cavalry close on your heels. Lord Gordon Serrett was at their head leading the Rivalless urging them onwards towards a hole that you could see in the eastern wall. All of your units were following them towards the eastern gate along the Gods Eye River Road. You approached a large sept and could see the main stained glass mural had been smashed to pieces and you felt a pang of rage flare in your heart. The glass that littered the steps was multi coloured and it infuriated you to see something that had once been so beautiful so casually desecrated. You looked up and made the sign of the seven as you heard unfamiliar horns sound out through the air. Stormlanders were moving to oppose you but atop the high hill Steadhold was built on you could see men sallying out from her gates. You could achieve victory here but time was beginning to tell. If the Hayford host and the Loyal Reins had actually committed to battle there was a very finite amount of time that you might be able to assist them. Your cavalry cut through a unit of infantry like a knife through cheese as they rode down the muddy streets but they still left more than enough men for your infantry to have to brawl through. A unit of infantry charged at you and you ripped your sword from it’s scabbard by way of response. “READY YOURSELVES MEN! HOLD YOUR GROUND!” Your fist clenched your shield and your teeth were being ground as your jaw flexed as you awaited the surge of two lines of infantry clashing together as you lashed out with your longsword… 4d6 for fighting for Tygon and 4d6 for the Drox 2nd Infantry please. Your tongue ran over your gold front teeth as you remembered the importance of shield work. It had been your own cousin who had knocked out your real teeth. You had laughed and japed about it to protect your pride but that lesson had kept you awake as you replayed the scene over and over in your dreams. You pressed forward and the point of your longsword drove into the mans chest. You lacked the strength that Ser Mervyn might though and though the point was surely red it was hardly a fatal blow. In return you caught an axe on the joint of your shoulder and could feel the familiar sharp burst of pain coming from your sword arm. --- Tygon Reynold Fighting (Longblades) Test ---Rolled 17 vs Combat Defense: 8Two Degrees of Success4 Damage x 2 = 8 Damage 8 Damage – 3 Armour = 5 Damage 7 Health – 5 Damage = 2 HealthResult: Errol Trained Infantryman I Damaged--- Errol Trained Infantryman I Fighting Test ---Rolled 18 vs Combat Defense: 8Three Degrees of Success4 Damage x 3 = 12 Damage12 Damage – 11 Armour = 1 Damage8 Health - 1 Damage = 7 HealthResult: Tygon Reynold Damaged
The soldier pressed his advantage and quickly sent a savage blow towards your head. It was on the wrong side to use your shield and so you tried to duck from the blow but it still caught you and sent your world spinning. The sound was a piercing ring of steel on steel and it took you a moment to regain your focus and balance but luckily your armour protected you from the further blows he struck. Your mother had never allowed you to squire in your youth as she always insisted it was too dangerous. It was only once Ser Mervyn Reynold had married Alyssa that you had begun to take any interest in the sword. You had scowled at the lowborn hedge knight with disdain when you’d first seen him in his rusted plate and mounted upon his dirty rounsey. Yet he fought with a precision and even a certain grace that was rare even amongst those who were of noble birth. No movement was ever without purpose, no energy was wasted. You had trained with him on occasion in the yard and had learned much from him although he still insisted you had a lot to learn. You had learned to wait from him though. Wait until your enemy makes a mistake and when he does…crush him. You watched the man with the haystack pinned at his breast. House Errol. Long seconds passed and the man came at you with all his fury. His axe went high and his shield went…low. You brought your sword from low to high and struck with all your might into the mans arm pit. The leather stopped some of the blow but it wasn’t enough. The man was knocked from his feet into the wet and cold ground giving you enough time to survey the situation.--- Trained Errol Infantry Charge ---Rolled 11 vs Combat Defense: 8One Degree of Success4 Damage + 2 (Charge) = 6 Damage 6 Damage – 3 Armour = 3 damage7 Health – 3 Damage = 4 Health Result: Drox 1st Infantry Damaged --- Drox 2nd Infantry Attack ---Rolled 18 vs Combat Defense: 8 Three Degrees of Success 5 Damage x 3 = 15 Damage15 Damage – 3 Armour = 12 Damage9 Health – 12 Damage = -3 HealthResult: Trained Errol Infantry Disorganized --- Trained Errol Infantry Will Test ---Rolled 10 vs DC: 9Result: Trained Errol Infantry RallyResult: Trained Errol Infantry no longer Disorganized The Errol charge had been a fierce one as they had come charging in a wedge and drove deep into the Drox infantry. Your men had held firm though and now the Errol Infantry were being surrounded on two sides. The ripple of doubt was obvious and you saw no captain to rally them. You did however here a man shouting and your eyes found what must have been a common born sergeant rallying the men. Elsewhere the Serrett cavalry were through and out into the land outside the castle wall. The crossbows and archers were following you as well. Ser Lorcan was leading the Reynold infantry to your left and the Drox 2nd were on your right fighting through the sacked town. The Malroy defenders were fighting men themselves as they hacked down the hill to meet you.
“CUT THEM DOWN MEN CUT THEM DOWN!” Death wasn’t something you enjoyed. War had never held any true sway of your heart. You would prefer to allow a man to surrender and make him an ally than kill him and make a foe of his father, brother or son. There was no place for that here however. This was war and the Stranger walked beside you to take the souls of the dead with him, be it to the Seven Heavens or the Seven Hells...Can I get 4d6 for Tygons fighting and 4d6 for the Drox 2nd please

The effect was immediate as they broke their ranks to try and stem the damage but you saw the carnage that had been unleashed by the stones. Lord Dresden was quick to rally his men to him however as he watched you move to remove the engineers as a threat. It wasn’t some reckless charge but instead a controlled pace that brought you face to face with the engineers. The man you began the dance of swords with was an older man with a lined and weather worn face. He attacked you with clumsy strokes with a wooden cudgel and you parried them deftly with your sword before back cutting towards the mans ribs. He wore a leather jerkin that stopped most of your blow but he still hissed in pain. The two of you danced the dance of death that ultimately ended with your sword in the mans stomach. He gripped the blade in shock with both hands and fell backwards agonizingly slow cutting open both of his palms as he did so. All around you the Drox Infantry were cutting down the engineers. Some tried to hide behind their weapons and other tried to run but it was proving futile. They weren’t line infantry and it was showing. He opened the visor of his helm and you saw glittering green eyes set into a solemn but unmarked and unlined face. “I do. Ser Pastorn Malroy.” He saluted you with his reddened blade and you returned the gesture. “I am Tygon Reynold of Ember Peak. We must act. A host of Hayford men sit outside your eastern walls doing battle with the other half of these Stormlanders, while the remnants of the other half remain inside the walls. Send your archers to the walls and I will send my own ranged forces.”His eyes flashed at the name of Reynold and he nodded his head. “What of the rest of my infantry?”Half of the men looked like competent soldiers, whilst the other half were likely drawn from the smallfolk that called Steadhold home. >>4463107This "elite vs 3x trained" battle is giving me a gamey feeling. Not that you're at fault here, Joe. It exposes a fault in the system. >>4463125>Look at what we can do with one heavy infantry unit in the Shryke quest. They are a meat grinder. Hell look what the Reins do.They never fight 1 vs 3 and not while being already battered. That's the difference here. And such examples don't excuse the flaw.
>>4463132I don't disagree that it looks outrageous
>>4463119You arn't wrong. However, it's not that far different than how the Loyal Reins cut down a huge number of men at the battle of the Trident. I also do think that it's somewhat historically accurate. Well equipped and exceedingly well trained men with better discipline could reasonably take on two or three times their number. The Herston Elite have upgraded armor and upgraded weapons as well. Regardless though, it is the system and if I'm being honest the whole system is quite easy to power game through. Specializing hard into one aspect of the game makes for very powerful characters very quickly, as does having any Elite forces in an army. But alas, that's the game.
>>4463119We saw what the ranged units did to those elites, melted right through. They were just smart and close to melee as fast as possible. In hindsight, it might've been wiser to "sac" one unit so we could catch them with another set of volleys either during or after that 1v1 engagement. >>4463110>Send Pastorns forces to deal with the Herston Elite while you assist the HayfordsI think our Hayford and Hogg friends would appreciate it if we save them from the shitty situation we got them into. Not to mention freeing up the Serret Cav ourselves will allow us to order them to finish up the Elites so they stop melting all our trained units.
Alright looks like we're dealing with the forces outside the walls ourselves. How do you guys want to deal with the archers on the wall? >Your ranged contingent now doubled theirs with the Malroy archers. Shoot them down from their walls>Send some infantry through the towers to clear them from the walls with sword and shield
>>4463250Can the archers occupy the eastern wall to assist us outside the castle's walls?
>>4463250Ideally I'd say pull back and ignore them. If that's not realistic, then I think sending the Infantry makes the most sense. Our ranged units should be able to give those elites a nice punch. If that's not possible without friendly fire, I'd suggest they come with us to relieve the Hayford group. Please let me know if my understanding of the current situation is off
>>4463255Once the enemy archers have been dealt with absolutely they can. >>4463261They are currently flanking the easternmost gate. Ignoring them will let them have a field day shooting down at you while you make your way to, through and out the gate to assist House Hayford. You could always go out a different gate but it'll take a while and you still have the problem of them shooting at you when you come around.
>>4463250>Send some infantry through the towers to clear them from the walls with sword and shieldI’m assuming we can’t use the archers on the elites because we chose to sicc Pastorn on them. Better that the archers start surprise attacking the outside forces
>>4463280Ah ok, thanks for clarifying that we can’t go out the gate unmolested>>4463284Changing this. Use the archers to kill the enemy archers on the wall. No point sending infantry up and then down. Infantry can just assume defensive posture and make their way to the gate.

“Ser Pastorn, take your men back down the hill and assist my men in bringing down those damnable Herston men. Your archers will come with my own and give us support from the curtain wall. We should order our infantry into a tortoise shell or chequered formation and continue to advance our infantry toward the gate while the archers duke it out.Their archers are going to be shooting at someone regardless of whether our infantry advance or not, holding our infantry back just forces the enemy to concentrate their fire on our own archers (who are less well armoured than infantry). Chances are the enemy will fire at our archers regardless (since they're the ones hurting them) but if not then I'm sure our infantry can handle a couple of rounds of shooting with the formation bonus (and particularly when the enemy archers are distracted by all the arrows we're sending their way).

The breeze stiffened your back as you shouted for your men to remember themselves so that they might regain your courage. It was almost as the Westerlands, your home, was giving you the strength to make your will felt. The knowledge that the might of the Westerlands was behind you and that they might be there within the week only gave you further inspiration. “ARCHERS! CROSSBOWMEN! TO THE WALLS!” Your voice was a medium tenor, something that had always irritated you. You had always envied your fathers voice. There seemed to be a certain permanence to it, a surety that he knew what he spoke was true. He may have been an incompetent ruler but he had still been your father. He had made you feel safe as a boy, and even as a man hearing him speak always put you at ease. You remembered his lessons about speaking as your voice now served to carry above the sounds of battle, of dying men. “INFANTRY WITH ME! THROUGH THE GATE!” The gate seemed to swallow you as you approached as you entered it’s shadow. When you walked through it you saw nothing less than devastation outside the walls. Cavalry was riding about and you could see your own Loyal Reins riding down Stormlanders that were fleeing from their wrath. You would estimate that there was nearly five hundred Stormlanders still standing and in fighting form. That left you in a dilemma. The Hayford and Hogg infantry were losing the battle as the cavalry cleared the back field. On one hand you could order the cavalry to charge into the enemies rear. Such a thing would likely prevent casualties for the men who had answered your call but it would be risking your own mens lives. On the other hand you could summon the cavalry to you and let the archers and crossbowmen that were now taking positions on the curtain wall deal with them as they fought to regain the castle. --- Tygon Reynold’s Warfare (Command) Test ---Rolled 15 vs DC: 21Result: Cease fighting Failed You gave the signal for your men to stop fight and to pull back but you had hesitated perhaps a moment too long. Most of the men under your command pulled away from the Stormlanders but the Loyal Reins had either not heard you or had heard you too late. Ser Mervyn was at the head of the wedge formation as they drove deep into the heavily armoured Herston Infantry and you watched in a mix of horror, regret and admiration as his hammer rose and fell. He fought like the implacable manifestation of the Strangers will. Every move had a purpose and he never hesitated. He committed to every blow, every strike and every feint with everything he had. He slew one man, a second and a third in quick succession before he came across what was clearly a lordling. The lordling thrust forward with the spike on top of his weapon but Ser Mervyn’s heater shield deftly turned it aside as he closed the distance and let his hammer go to work. The resulting fight took less than heartbeat before the Herston man was weaponless with both knees in the mud and snow. The man likely had potential as a hostage or at the very least a ransom but you knew how merciless Mervyn could be. His ability to put sentiment aside was largely why you had begun negotiations with certain houses to purchase the rights to specific deeds of land so that you might land him. A nest of snakes roiled in your gut as you remembered your own part in the murder of Ser Sebaston Farman. An ironborn spear had struck the killing blow but your hand was the one that had guided it there…Ser Mervyn was ahorse once more by the time you had reach the remains of the Herston forces. You sheathed your sword, blood and all, and stepped ahead of the Drox 1st in order to address them...
