You are Tamaki Koharu and you’ve found yourself having accepted training from an amusing, but sketchy as hell candy-store man. You’re not sure exactly who or what he is, but if Hisashi, the shinigami whom you befriended about a week ago trusts him enough to introduce the two of you, you’ll take it.

Urahara-sensei gave you an ominous warning regarding spending too much time outside your own body, but it’s not very comforting given how restrictive and frail your physical body is. Still, he asked you to come with it the next day. Maybe he’ll be able to help you understand why you can separate your soul in the first place.

One week. That’s the time Urahara promised to give you for training. He’ll be in Osaka for the whole duration, so technically you could just train the entire time. But that’d give you all kinds of problems with school, as well as make Akane and Chie worried. Then again, you could always call in sick and nobody would probably question it.

Hisashi also mentioned that if you want to help him find lost souls and hunt hollows, he can take you with him. You write that off more as him sucking at Reikaku, spiritual awareness, rather than any other possible agenda.

>Dedicate your complete time to training. (More progress on abilities and powers)
>Do your school duties and then go train. (Potential to make friends spiritually aware, potential encounter)
>Train during the day, hunt during the night. (Gain practical experience, potential encounter)
>Other? (Write-in)

(This will determine what you do for the week, though there will be possibilities to deviate sometimes.)

Welcome back to Advent Soul Quest!

>What is this?
A quest based on the setting of Bleach. Deviation from canon depends on the MC’s influence, and some other additions are to be expected as well.
>Who are we?
Tamaki Koharu, a 10th grade (high schooler) spiritually aware trap living near Osaka with developing spiritual powers.
>When are we?
Currently it is Summer 1981, ~20 years prior to the events of canon.
>Dice? Challenge?
Prompted after deciding on an action. Usually 3d10, best of 3 (Bo3), against a set DC and sometimes a crit-DC. Write-ins may affect the DC as well. If a character stat (in the pastebin) is directly related to the action, it will substitute the lowest die in rolls if it is higher (will be always explained when prompted to roll).
>Updates?
I will aim to update at least once per hour at first, and each time make a post when I start writing, or when I intend to if I will take longer. My timezone is UTC+2 (Euro), let’s see how good or bad that’ll go.
>I have questions!
Ask away and I’ll do my best to answer.
>What do?
Have fun, vote on what feels the best, roll some dice and chill.

The next day you go to school as normal. The only difference now was that now you were actually looking forward to something. This didn’t go unnoticed by Akane, who used this as an opportunity to tease you a bit.

“So who’s the lucky guy?”

“What?” you ask perplexed, as Akane’s words snap you out of your thoughts. Her grin just grew wider and poked your forehead.

“That expression, the daydreaming, the sudden light in your eyes, it can mean only one thing: You’re going on a date with someone!”

“W-What? NO!”

“Oh come on, we’re your best friends! You can tell us!” Chie too, now joined in. You just buried your face in your hands.

“Look, just ‘cause I don’t look dead for a change doesn’t mean I’m dating anyone. So cut it out!”

“Wow, we really did hit something there!” Akane laughed. “But I’ll let it slide, Koharu… for now.” You rolled your eyes.

Once school ended, you bid farewell to Chie, but also Akane, as you are going towards the city today instead of home. Her normally nonchalant and humorous personality shifts slightly to a worried one upon hearing it. You do your best however to reassure her that everything’s going to be fine. As you part though, Akane of course wishes you the best of luck on your ‘date’. You can’t help but tell her to piss off.

The trip to Urahara’s shop was an odd one. You normally never travel anywhere unless it is absolutely necessary. Now that you’re alone, the alley where the shop is looks even more creepy and sends shivers down your spine. You take a step and…

“Yo!”

You instinctively throw a punch behind you, only to hit Hisashi, who falls down on his back, clutching his nose. Then you hold your hand, as that punch really, really hurt.

“Hey, what’s the big deal?!” he shouts as he gets up.

“Don’t you ‘Yo!’ at me, dumbass! Jeez, you almost gave me a heart attack!”

“Ugh, and here I decided to just come and make sure you’re all fine and good, and this is how you repay me?” Hisashi grumbles, but you just turn your head back towards the alley, ignoring him.

“Next time don’t be a creep, and you won’t get hit.”

The two of you find the shop once more, and politely excuse yourselves inside. There, instead of Mr. Hat-and-Clogs, you find a boy, probably some three or four years younger than you, moving stuff in the shop.

“Oh, a customer! Hello!”

“Umm, we’re here to see Urahara-san,” you explain. “Is he here?”

The boy stares at you for a moment, then quickly gives a glance towards where Hisashi is. You’re pretty sure he can see him.

“Well, owner’s out doing some biz, yeah!” he says as he comes closer and bows. “I’m Kuroda Jun, owner’s assistant! Pleased to meet ya!”

“Tamaki Koharu,” you introduce yourself, a little confused, sparing Hisashi a stray glance. Kisuke didn’t mention him… And based on this, you bet he didn’t tell this boy anything either.

“Kuroda-kun,” you begin, scratching the back of your head awkwardly. “Can you, umm… see him?” you ask as you point over your shoulder at Hisashi. Either this’ll make things easier… or it’ll make you seem like a total idiot.

“Umm..” Jun looks at you, then over at Hisashi, then back at you. Yeah, this boy has no poker face whatsoever. You are about to say something when Hisashi just bursts out in a laugh.

“We’ve already met, Koharu-chan,” Hisashi says. He changed your honorific. God damn it.

“Poor lad just didn’t know if you could see me!” In response, you plant your elbow in his gut.

“Great, now that’s sorted out..” you say and move further in and give Jun a smile.

“If you can see ghosts, it must mean you’re not just an ordinary boy, right?”

Jun lightly chuckles, putting his hands behind his head. “Well… yeah! I help the owner out with all kinds of stuff! But mostly the shop. Especially that guy. He always loses stuff, but hey, more business for us!”

Hisashi, recovered from your elbow, looms over your shoulder, and Jun could swear Hisashi’s eyes turned into white stars, threatening him. You extend your arm to the side, blocking Hisashi’s way.

“No bullying!”

The front door slides open once again, with Urahara stepping inside with Tessai.

“Why hello! Looks like you’re already getting along with Jun-kun!” Kisuke says in that nonchalant voice of his.

>1/2
>>
After brief pleasantries, the five of you move to what Urahara says is the ‘training area’. And by that, he meant some corner of his establishment where he removes the lid, showing a long, very long ladder directly downwards.

While Urahara, Tessai and Jun went down very quickly by sliding, you can’t trust yourself to do that without hurting yourself, and probably dying. Hisashi, who’s getting more and more impatient, is right after you.

“That’s it, fuck this!” he said, and straight up jumped off the ladder and grabbed you. Screaming, the two of you fall down to the ground, but Hisashi fortunately cushions the fall somehow. You punch him and wrestle out of his arms.

“I thought I would die, you asshole!” you shout at him.

“You’re welcome, miss slowpoke,” Hisashi retorts. “At least now we’re here, and not spending the rest of the day climbing a ladder.”

Urahara coughs to get your attention, muttering something about ruining something.

It’s then that you finally get your bearings, and look at your surroundings. It’s a huge, enormous space with a fake sky, all lit somehow as if it was day.

“Wooow, who could have guessed there was this in my basement?” Urahara shouts into the distance, his voice echoing. You’re left staring at it with your mouth agape.

“Well then, Koharu-chan!” he begins. “We can finally start your training! Hooray!” he flutters his fan around. Then, his expression turns to a serious one.

“You’d probably start with theory normally… but perhaps going straight to the practical part will work better?” he muses, waiting to see what you’ll say.

You sigh, dusting off some of the dirt that got on your school uniform due to the dust that came from Hisashi’s improvised landing.

“I’d rather listen to the ‘what’ and ‘why’s first. Things have happened but nobody has explained it to me all yet.

Kisuke nods, approving of your decision. Was this already some sort of test of his?

“Well, let’s get comfortable then!” he says, nodding to Tessai, who places his palms onto the ground, and suddenly a picnic table emerges from a cloud of smoke. You carefully poke it, as if to see if it’s real or not. Urahara invites you and Jun to sit, while Hisashi and Tessai leave for another spot of the huge training area.

“Well then!” Kisuke opens his fan and puts it in front of his mouth. “I guess we should begin from scratch!”

“First off, is this table real?” you ask, uncomfortable with how you can’t distinguish physical reality from spiritual right now.

“Well, you are sitting on it, are you not? Wouldn’t that make it real?” Kisuke explains, but it only makes you give him the murder-stare.

“In the physical sense, no. This is a product of Kidō, ghost magic if you will.”

“So if someone who can’t see ghosts would look…”

“We’d be floating in thin air.”

So spiritual stuff can still affect the physical world?” Kisuke nods.

“There is an imbalance though. If we were all just souls without a physical body, any shinigami with at least some skill in kidō could make us a table, and we’d be having a wee nice picnic.”

“But for humans with physical bodies… It requires a high level of skill. Physical matter is what dictates how things should be. And if you try to sit without a physical chair underneath you, you’d just look silly in a second. Anything without a physical counterpart will be violently reminded of the physical reality. A spiritual boulder wouldn’t kill an ant without enough power. A physical pebble can fatally wound a soul.”

You take a moment to take this in. Reality, physical matter, spiritual… you sort of get it, but it’s unsettling nonetheless.

“And this brings us to Reishi!” Kisuke happily announces.

“Spiritual matter. Now that’s the tricky thing. Everything physical naturally develops, or grows, a Reishi counterpart, and they are bonded. If you rip it away, you’re in a sense, only left with the ‘memory’ of whatever thing it belonged to.”

“Memory?” you say aloud. “So this table.. is just a memory of a table? And these chairs too?”

“Bingo!” Urahara applauds. “Nothing more, nothing less. That’s why it’s relatively easy to shape it into whatever we want! Food, furniture, money!”

You facepalm. “Why am I not surprised you’d make counterfeit money?”

Urahara looks wounded. “I would never, ever do anything like that! Right Jun?”

The boy sweats for a moment before nodding. Right…

“Where were we? Oh right, Reishi! That’s why, for instance, if you were to separate from your body right now…”

“...I’d appear with my current clothes,” you complete his thought. He looks pleased at your deduction.

“Speaking of separation,” you begin your question, “Hisashi said I’m weird. I mean, the fact that I can separate at will. Why?”

Kisuke pats his cane against his shoulder. “Well, for starters… the Chain of Fate that souls usually have, is literally their anchor to the physical world. A living human’s soul is meant to be inside its body, so if you drag it out, it should be connected to the body.”

“Souls with no body to return to have a broken chain. Fear, hate, regret… strong emotions and ties to the life before death keeps the souls anchored in this world, unable to move on. Leave one alone for long enough, and that’s how you get a hollow.”

Your heart sinks. While Hisashi didn’t say that directly, you did figure out the implications of what ‘losing one’s heart’ means.

“So these hollows we’ve killed… they were once normal souls?”

“Emphasis on were,” Kisuke says in a dark tone. “Minds driven only by regrets and other strong emotions.”

You swallow hard.

“Now, if a soul doesn’t have a chain of fate on them, what do you think that means?”

You ponder for a moment. “Nothing is tying them to this world.”

“Correct! Aren’t you smart!” Kisuke smiles widely. You can’t help but see it as him taking a piss on you.

“And if nothing is tying them to this world, they…” you continue.

“Pass on,” Kisuke finishes your thought this time. “The few that you might see are usually blurry, more what you’d expect from a ghost. Their soul’s memory is decomposing.”

“But you are still alive. You should have that bond between body and soul. The only times there’s none....” Kisuke makes an eerily long pause.

“...is if the soul doesn’t exactly belong to the body,” he finishes, now giving you an incredibly creepy, analytical stare, his eyes shadowed by his hat.

>That can’t be right. I know this is my body. When I’m separate, I look exactly like this.

Based on what Kisuke explained here, a Gigai is essentially reishi with very strong memory, enough to be physically visible.

For the life of me though, I'm not sure how to deal with the matter to reishi convertor that the canon main cast used to go into dangai. Should've just left their physical bodies there and given them gigais.

Thinking about it they had no way to just leave their physical bodies without severing the chain, which then they would have had to beat being hollowed like Ichigo did right? “That… that can’t be right,” you object, poking your own body, even giving your backside a light slap. “I mean, I just know this is my body ever since birth. My caretakers would’ve noticed something, even though my mother-”

“Died? Curious. Did you happen to start seeing ghosts after her death?” Urahara prodded with more questions that made your insides turn.

“A-Anyway, let’s just for a moment, assume that you are right. Where is my real body then? And whose body is this?”

Kisuke doesn’t say anything for a moment, while fanning some air into his direction. “Well, one thing being true doesn’t mean the other one isn’t.”

“That is, that could very well be your body, but your soul could have some… additional baggage on it, if you catch the crude metaphor.”

“Like, something else that isn’t me?”

“Maybe… maybe not. One thing for sure is that it stabilizes your soul enough that your soul won’t pass on, but it also is just the wrong fit for your body that it doesn’t stick to it properly.”

That… can explain some things. Shit, is that why your body has been frail all this time? Because your soul is the wrong damn ‘fit’? This makes you upset for sure.

“Is there… any way to make it fit then?” you ask.

“Not without getting you another body. Technically, I don’t have a physical body, but a Gigai! It’s an amazing piece of ghost science, I’ll tell you that!” he eagerly explains, the tone shifting from glum to annoyingly cheerful. Kisuke notices your irritation and returns to a more serious expression.

“What I’m saying is, if I were to give you a Gigai, it would shape itself to be a perfect container for your soul. But it isn’t and never will be a physical one.”

“The living, physical body is unique.”

While you are thinking, Kisuke takes his cane and lightly pokes you with its end.

Instead, your soul is sent flying like from a cannon in the opposite direction of the cane.

You keep tumbling, until a boulder stops you. You groan in some pain as you try to rise up, your clothing ruined here and there, and a handful of bruises. That asshole…

“Koharu-chan…!” Kisuke shouts from the picnic table as him and Jun are running towards you. Jun gets there first, and helps you up.

“What the hell was that for?!” you shout at Kisuke, who is scratching the chin of his dumbfounded face.

“W-Well, I wasn’t expecting you to fly off like that at all!” he says, trying to sound cheerful. You punch him in the face.

“Apology maybe accepted,” you grumble.

Kisuke sighs. “Well, this does confirm it. Your soul doesn’t correspond to your body. Otherwise it wouldn’t have ejected you this violently.”

You take a few deep breaths, trying to wrap your head around all of this. You knew your life was a tad bit more fucked up than that of others, but add in this soul mumbo-jumbo, and you’re not sure who you are yourself anymore. The rumors that other shrine maidens had at the Kasuga-taisha flooded your mind. Maybe your family line was really cursed? Maybe your family actually did harbor a demon?

“Nope, timeout,” you announce, raising your hands up, and turn towards the approximate direction of Hisashi, whom you can sense pretty well right now, like his signal is boosted.

Kisuke just nods. “Take your time! We’ll have a nice picnic in the meantime!”

As you get to Hisashi, who was doing some training with kidō under the guidance of Tessai apparently, he looks at you with a confused expression, which turns a bit red as he notices the slight damage to your clothing, one of which was a small chunk of the skirt.

Nonetheless, you grab him by the ear and start dragging to the side, disregarding his objections. Tessai just looks with pity.

You get to a small rock formation to just sit.

“What’s the big idea?!” Hisashi demands, rubbing his ear.

“Okay, so, apparently, my soul doesn’t match my body.”

“Excuse me, what?” Hisashi asks, confused.

“Just listen, okay? Maybe if I say this stuff aloud myself it’ll make sense,” you sigh, trying to keep it together.

“And if they don’t match, it means I,” you say and look at yourself. Your body is probably still at the picnic table with Kisuke and Jun. While the thought of leaving your body there is revolting, you can’t help it for now.

“It means I have or am something that’s not what I should’ve been when born.”

Hisashi listens, and scratches the back of his head, holding his zanpakutō against his shoulder. While he didn’t have much to say, he continued to listen patiently as you continued to vent. You explained the rest of Kisuke’s explanations, your frustration with it all, and your resurfaced identity crisis.

“Well,” Hisashi began, “I say take a step back. You are still you, and you are in control of yourself. Whatever the reason is for this mismatch, I’m sure it can be made useful, one way or another.”

You sigh. He has a point, but it still doesn’t remove the tension you feel from it. Hisashi walks up to you and bends his knees to lower down and raises your head by your chin.

“A battle not won ain’t lost either. So cheer up,” he attempts to lift your spirits, and gives you a genuinely warm smile, in contrast to his usual bleak and serious face.

You breathe in deep, and return the smile.

“Thank you Hisashi. This… really helped me. I don’t know what’d I do if I were alone right now.”

Hisashi stands upright again and extends his hand to you. You take it and use it to get up as well.

After a short and awkward silence, Hisashi scrambles a bit. “Oh would you look at the time! Duty calls, heh, I’ll see you later.. Koharu, yeah?” he said after looking at a weird clock in his pocket.

You sigh and shake your head, but in a way you’re glad that he’s like that. Certainly lifts the mood.

“Hey Hisashi,” you call out as he’s about to run towards the ladder, “If you really do need my help some time, don’t… hesitate.”

Hisashi gives you a thumbs up and continues his sprint. Considering he could use that flash step of his, it looks additionally comical.

“Right, here we go…”

You return to the picnic area where Kisuke, Jun and now Tessai are all drinking tea.

“Ah, Koharu-chan,” Kisuke says with a wide grin, holding his arms open. “We were beginning to get worried!”

“Yeah, right,” you shake your head. “Anyway, I’m back for round two.”

“Well, I think it’s nigh time that we actually do something!” Kisuke said, rising up from the picnic bench. “We could talk all day, but some things are easier to show than explain.”

The four of you make your way to an empty… well, emptier area. Kisuke stands some twenty meters away from you, and Jun sits further away watching with Tessai standing behind him.

“Reiatsu. Spiritual pressure. The very same your Reikaku picks up, the pressure you felt during your and Hisashi’s fight against that angler hollow, and…”

“What you’ll feel now.”

With that, Kisuke begins releasing more and more reiatsu. Slowly, the air surrounding him tints red, and you feel like suffocating. Soon enough, you fall on your knees.

Kisuke diminishes his reiatsu by a step, but keeps enough that you’re not having it easy.

“When tampered with intent, say… bloodlust…” he continues his demonstration, and suddenly you see a black void coming from behind Kisuke and tendrils of the same blackness reach towards you. It’s pretty damn terrifying.

Before it gets too far, Kisuke again stops it.

“And when tampered with technique…”

Kisuke charges his arm and punches the ground, splitting the ground in front of him almost to the end of the room. The noise from the mayhem is deafening.

“This is what we’ll practise now. Focus on the inside, and reach out to the core of your soul. Bring outside the power that is yours!”

That man… he is beyond terrifying.

You calm yourself, as much as you can with Urahara’s reiatsu still flooding your sixth sense and your whole soul in general. That fear you felt, he was ready to kill you, no, butcher you here and now.

Among this all however, your sixth sense… no, something behind your sixth sense brings you calmness. Like a steady stream of water that will flow no matter the circumstances.

You metaphorically extend your two arms towards these two feelings, reaching in to find and grasp the power that Kisuke wants you to find. You reach deeper and deeper, until finally, you feel something akin to a door unlocking.

And open the floodgates it did.

You hold your arms downwards and find yourself howling like the wind as your reiatsu builds up. You feel strong, stronger than ever, like you could take on the world. Yet something feels very wrong, like two hurricanes spinning in the opposite directions grinding against each other.

>Meanwhile

“Tessai-san…” Jun asks, sweating, “Isn’t reiatsu supposed to be… you know, single-color?”

Tessai, who’s holding and in a way protecting Jun from the reiatsus of both Kisuke and you, nods. “Usually..”

“Why the hell is her reiatsu shifting between green and purple?!” he shouts.

>Back to you

While you do your best to keep your reiatsu up, it all dissipates in an explosive flash. You fall down to your knees, breathing heavily and coughing occasionally. Kisuke slowly walks up to you, kneeling beside you.

“Lesson one, clear!”

Kisuke sits down on the ground and seems to analyse you for a solid minute while you’re catching your breath.

“How did it feel?” he asks.

“It… it was like I was being towed in opposite directions,” you try to explain, “I felt like I was about to split into two pieces.”

“Well you certainly put up quite a show, Koharu-chan! And I must say, I’m very impressed! This level of reiatsu isn’t something you develop overnight… less so in an hour.”

He again narrowed his eyes at you, something you’ve noticed he does when he’s analyzing things.

“What did you reach out to, if I may be curious?”

You do your best to recall the surreal moment.

“At first, it was just one feeling, but it quickly split off into two. One was a calm, steady, flowing like feeling. Like if you were to watch a steady stream of water, feeling where every drop of water is at any given time. And I reached out to it”

“The other one came from deeper within. When you directed your bloodlust at me, a primal fear surged forth. That’s what I also reached out to.”

Kisuke again didn’t say anything, thinking to himself. After a moment he just sprung up, going back to his joyous expression. “Alrighty then! Onto the next lesson!”

What a frustrating man. He doesn’t intend to tell you his thoughts, does he?

“Jun-kun!” he beckoned the boy to come to the two of you. He brings some weird training gear as well: a white headband and a pair of white gloves.

“Boxing gear?” you ask suspiciously.

“Maybe!” Kisuke smiles. “Koharu-chan, I want you to fight Jun-kun! The lesson ends when one of you gets knocked out!”

Kisuke wants you to fight Jun? But he’s a kid!

...Okay, not much younger than you, but still!

“With this outlandish gear?” you ask, confused.

Jun, meanwhile, quickly puts on the gear and looks ready to fight.

“Ready? Set…”

“Wha- Hey, just hold on a minute…!” you exclaim.

“Go!” Kisuke casually says and Jun rushes at you at a speed that you wouldn’t expect at all. He throws a punch at you which you just manage to sidestep, and upon contact with the ground, it is obliterated, raising a cloud of dust in its wake. You are lucky enough with just getting flung out of there by the explosion.

You gulp, and run to get the gear. This is Kisuke, so no doubt they’re special or something. Fortunately for you, Jun lets you take them all good.

Urahara and Tessai meanwhile comment on this show like two grandpa’s watching a horse race. It doesn’t take long until Jun resumes his assault. He was such a nice boy just a moment ago, how the hell can he turn into such a machine of destruction in a mere moment?!

You shuffle with the headband and try to figure out how to put it on.

“Kisuke you bastard, how do I put this thing on?!” you shout to him.

“Listen closely Koharu-chan! You have to put it on like this!” he shouts back, showing you an example of the movement.

“And then you say the incantation: Take this! Power of justice! Armor of justice! Justice headband! In place!” he dramatically shouts.

What the hell is that outlandish phrase?

You do your best to dodge and prepare for the most daunting task ahead.

That is, swallowing your pride and actually saying what Kisuke said.

“Take this! Power of justice! Armor of justice! Justice headband! In place!” you shout while holding the headband to your forehead.

Nothing happens.

“Oh my. Koharu-chan actually did it,” Kisuke whistled, while holding his fan in front of his mouth.

“I’LL KILL YOU KISUKE!” you shout while fiddling with the headband, until suddenly it actually attaches to your head, the weird strings behind connecting. Then the gloves, and now you’re finally ready.

When Kisuke did that reiatsu demonstration, he showed you the different ways one can use it. If it’s supposedly so malleable, perhaps you can use it to help you out here.

You once again reach within and push out the now familiar power, but at a much lower intensity. It seems that if you don’t draw too much, the reiatsu is stable.

You don’t wait around long to think, and instead focus on using the reiatsu to move you instead of your feet. Sort of like a ratchet. Your memories dwell on the times you’ve seen and felt Hisashi perform shunpo. And then it happens.

At first it completely disorients you as you perform a crude version of the flash step technique. To Jun’s credit, he keeps up with where you are and continues his assault without giving you an inch of breathing room.

But you are dodging him. And it’s time to take it from defensive to offensive.

Keeping your reiatsu steady, you keep using our imitation of shunpo and set yourself on the offensive now. Jun notices this and decides to step up his game as well, and you notice a rise in his reiatsu. He begins to use shunpo himself, no doubt taught to him by Kisuke. This kid is much stronger than he lets in on.

By all means you are no martial artist, you’ve hardly thrown any punches or kicks, and when you did, you usually hurt yourself.

You exchange strikes and dodges with Jun. The only problem is that Jun is clearly an experienced fighter and knows how to dodge just enough, while you have to rely on getting distance to dodge. This makes landing any proper hits on him extremely difficult.

Then you get the brilliant idea: Instead of flash stepping near him, why not try to flash step into him? Surely he can’t dodge that.

You squeeze out some more reiatsu and envelop your punch in it, much like what you think you saw Kisuke do, and flash step pretty much into him. The punch connects just barely, as Jun is just able to shift the blow to his left arm. Jun, panicking, extends his right and punches you square into the chest, and you are sent flying.

After the concussion wears off, you find yourself cushioned by Tessai, but your chest hurts like hell. Upon closer inspection, you are actually bleeding from there. Your eyes refocus on Jun, who’s kneeling a bit of a distance away, and you see now what happened: His arm is covered in blood.

Whatever you did, it seems to have worked.

>1/2

Kisuke and Tessai tend to your wounds, bringing you to a single area near what looks like hot springs. You wince as the first-aid is applied.

“Sorry, Koharu-chan, I.. I panicked,” Jun asks for forgiveness, a little teared up. You’re not sure whether it’s from his own wound, or because he feels bad. Considering how sweet he’s been, you do think it’s the latter.

You sigh. “I should be the one apologizing. Your arm.. is it going to be okay?” you say and cough.

“Oh you’ll both be all fine and dandy, not to worry!” Kisuke nonchalantly assures you.

“Lesson 2 clear! I must say, you’ve yet to disappoint me, Koharu-chan. Imitating both Hohō and Hakuda by just seeing it once or twice is no small feat.”

“It’s all just… using reiatsu? Just in different ways?”

“Bingo! Though that’s a very crude way of saying it. Don’t let the shinigami hear that, they’ll be very angry!”

“I feel… hungry. Is that normal? I mean, as a soul?”

Kisuke nods. “It means you are low on Reiryoku. Spiritual energy. While your body will regenerate it on its own, reiryoku-rich food helps with that.”

“Reishi food?” you ask. “Reishi, reiatsu, reiryoku… just how many rei-things are there?”

Kisuke laughs. “Oh don’t worry. Those three are the foundation to understand the spiritual realm. Matter, force and energy. Isn’t that just like the physical world, hmm?” he winks.

Tessai finishes with your injury and helps you sit upright.

“Well, go on, the hot springs will do you wonders! Then you should head home,” Kisuke says as he again opens up his fan. “It’s getting late, and you should rest.”

“You’ll need it for tomorrow’s lesson.”

There’s that creepy and ominous look of his again.

You hate that look.

The next day your body felt like a wreck, yet it didn’t hinder you that much. Maybe this is how those sports-enthusiastic people feel when they talk about work-up aches.

Hisashi waves you goodbye from the roof as you leave for school with Akane. It really looks like he’s using that spot as his base of operations, if you can call it anything like that.

School time has moved from being boring to being sort of like a movie playing in the background for you. Now that you are keenly aware of the spiritual happenings at least within a kilometer or two, it gets hard to focus on things you’re not interested in. You make a note that you should figure out a way to turn this useful but mentally exhausting power off and on.

On lunch break, Chie brings up something quite interesting.

“I heard Miya-chan and Nami-chan went to the basement yesterday, and.. and actually saw a ghost!”

“This shit again? The ghost of this school’s notorious principal? Do you really believe them?” Akane sighs, scratching her forehead.

“I don’t think they’d skip class today just for such a thing!” Chie insisted.

“Seriously, first Tomoe, then Uzuki, now these two. They’re literally in the same circle of friends. I’m not buying it.”

Chie sighs. “I’m worried though… Koharu-chan, what do you think?”

Akane looks at you as well.

>It’s probably nothing. If it was, I’m sure the adults would be involved. (Don’t investigate)
>I don’t think you should worry. Ghosts aren’t real. (Investigate alone)
>Well, they could have been on to something. Maybe we should look. (Investigate together)
>I don’t know, but… I can ask somebody to look into it. (Investigate with Hisashi)

“Well,” you scratch your head a bit. Thing is, you think you’ve seen this ghost once or twice, watching ongoing classes. Lately though you’ve not seen him do that.

“They could’ve been onto something,” you say.

“You… can’t be serious, Koharu,” Akane says, holding her hand in front of her.

“Look at it this way. We could argue about it all day, or we could just go there and see for ourselves. At least it’ll give us a concrete answer and not just speculation.”

Akane groans but ultimately agrees with this plan. Chie however becomes problematic as the time comes closer to evening and the end of school: She’s frightened.

Chie keeps asking all kinds of questions such as ‘What if it eats us’ and ‘What will her mother think when she doesn’t return’. All in all, not a very positive outlook, nor does it help you or Akane with your own nervousness.

“I’ve got a flashlight at least,” Akane says as the three of you make your way to the basement, avoiding any teachers who would make you go home. You get to the lowest floor. There’s no windows here, but you flip the light switch on.

“Oh hey, the lights work!” Chie exhales in relief.

“Why wouldn’t they?” Akane asks.

“Well, y-you know… in the movies, they u-usually don’t…”

And of course, the lights flicker a few times. Way to jinx it, Chie.

This does make the atmosphere a bit more tense than before.

Both Akane and Chie look to you to lead on, which kind of surprises you. Looks like Akane isn’t as confident about this as you thought she was.

“In any case, we should stick together,” you say as you begin going forward. “Akane’s got our flashlight, and we all know stupid shit happens in movies where people separate.”

While the two girls look around not knowing what to look for, you have a much clearer picture in your mind. You’ve seen and felt this ghost before, so you know his spiritual signature. Focusing on your Reikaku, you suddenly see white ribbons materialize in front of you and around. Some thinner and translucent, others wide and opaque. Looking at Akane and Chie, they both have a thread coming from their chests towards you.

Well, then. It looks like you’ve managed to figure out something new.

You feel through the different ribbons mentally, until one of them matches the memory you have of the principal ghost. Once you lock onto it, the other ribbons disappear, leaving you with a single one, a guide that takes you to your target.

The closer you get, the more of the lights begin to flicker and soon enough, the ceiling lights are out. Chie is freaking out, while Akane does her best to stay headstrong and takes out her flashlight.

You’re pretty sure the ghost is in the next room, and you’re also sure he knows you’re onto him.

Talking to him would be the easiest way to figure out what’s been happening, but Akane and Chie probably won’t be able to see him.

Well, you’ll have to tell them sooner or later, so it’s better to be sooner.

“Chie-chan, Akane-san…” you begin, turning to look at them. “I want you to make sure not to panic. The ghost we’re looking for really exists and he’s behind this door.”

Chie looks like she’s about to panic despite your request, but Akane puts a hand on her shoulder to keep her from doing it, while she’s struggling to believe your words.

“I haven’t told you because I didn’t want to involve you, but, the fact is I can see ghosts. So just… stick to me and let me handle this, okay?”

The two of them nod. While Akane is still skeptical, she no doubt feels the tense atmosphere.

Ever since you got closer, the air feels more and more stale. You feel this guy’s reiatsu from behind the door, and it’s filled with an eerie dark calmness.

You open the door to find a storage room of all kinds of school furniture and supplies, but the center is open, and there’s an armchair on the opposite side. And on that sofa, sits a man in a navy suit, round glasses, black hair, and most importantly…

His chain of fate is barely noticeable, with only a single chain link left on it, and the area surrounding it looks like it’s bleeding darkness.

He looks at you, and slowly claps. “Well, well, well, somebody that not only can see me, but knows how to find me.”

Your heart sinks. “How do you know my name?” you demand.

“Please, you’re smarter than this. This is my school. A good principal knows his students.”

Akane and Chie are sticking close to you, with Akane moving her flashlight around, trying to find anything.

“He’s sitting on the armchair, keep still,” you tell them.

“So, you’ve found me. With two other students who can’t even see me. Well, here I am,” he says as he crosses his legs and puts his arms together, watching you intently.

You swallow hard, considering how to deal with him. The former principal doesn’t seem to be aggressive, but that could change. While you have more experience under your belt than before, it still isn’t much.

“If I remember right, you were principal some twenty years ago. Why are you still lingering here?”

Kinji closes his eyes for a moment before looking again at you. “This is my school. This school is what it is because of me, and I’ll make sure to look after it.”

Something feels wrong about this. Sure, in a way it checks out, him watching over classes during the day, but the few times you’ve seen him, you just know his intentions weren’t as pure as that.

Matsubara-sensei narrows his eyes. “Now why would you care? It’s not like they were your friends. Why would you defend those who bullied you?”

This guy reeks of bad omens.

“Because friends or not, you should keep your hands off the living.”

Kinji rises up from his chair, irritation visible on his face. “That’s no way to speak to your superior, Koharu-san. If you’re so eager to defend them, maybe you should then take my full, undivided attention? Or maybe I should show you what I did, but with your close friends?”

His reiatsu begins to rise, and your stomach begins to feel bad. His spiritual signature… it feels a little like a hollow’s!”

“Leave them out of this!” you say and straighten your arms to the sides, protecting the two.

“If focusing on me will keep the others out, then so be it,” you say. Akane and Chie of course are ready to protest. You notice only now that they’re feeling nauseous and it’s getting harder for them to breathe.

“Oh? You’re intent on protecting them too?” the principal smirks. “Aren’t you the saint.”

He’s definitely intent on escalating the situation, but you still want to try and talk sense to him.

“Matsubara-sensei,” you begin by addressing him politely, “please reconsider. You’re clearly here because something is tying you here. Something that keeps you from passing on. Just how.. did you die?”

Kinji scratches his chin and begins to laugh. It looks like Akane and Chie can hear something by their scared reaction.

“How did I die? Right, they want to keep it a secret…”

“When I was principal, I gave this school my everything, my all. I defended it, I fought for it, I innovated,” he boasts confidently.

“Doing so much work, having such a big burden… yet all the reward I got was simple gratitude. But gratitude doesn’t always cut it, does it?”

He gives you a creepy smile as he adjusts his glasses. You absolutely don’t like where this is going.

“So I decided to take my own ‘rewards.’ I am the school’s principal afterall, the supreme authority in this building. What place does a student have to refuse me?”

You feel like vomiting.

“But then, those bitches decided to group together and rat me out to the police. Suffice to say, I didn’t go down without a fight.”

“You asked what I did to those girls, well I’ll tell you. I gave them something to remember, and something to tell their treacherous mothers. That ‘daddy’ is furious.”

As he says that, his final chain fragment begins to devour itself while he’s laughing and screaming at the same time, his voice changing into a more reverberating one.

Leaving your body with Akane and Chie wins.

In the meantime, you can start thinking about strategy and how to deal with the forming hollow.
>>
Honestly we should blitz him right away. Once he forms there's no guarantee he'll even be in this room but he should be at his weakest right after forming.
>>
Kinji’s maniacal laugh and scream reverberates throughout the room and probably beyond. Akane and Chie can hear or feel a fraction of it, as they are holding their hands to their ears in an attempt to block it off.

“Akane, Chie!” you shout, and push them out of the room from where you came from. Kinji’s body begins to get surrounded by a dark void, and in a blinding flash it disappears, leaving charred marks in the room.

While it seems like he’s gone for now, your guts say he’ll come back very, very soon. And considering you were the one to agitate him, you have a strong feeling his target will be you.

Chie is a sobbing mess, so you focus on your other best friend.

“Akane, listen to me!” you say while shaking her a bit by her shoulders. She gets herself composed again. “Koharu, what the fuck is this? What’s happening?!”

“Akane, you have to stay calm. I need you to trust me, alright? I’ll explain everything when this is over!”

“I need you to stay put here with Chie and… with me.”

Akane looks at you, completely confused.

“I’m able to separate my soul from my body. Think of sleepwalking, but without actually moving. But while I do that, my body will be in your care, do you understand me?”

Akane is at a loss of words, but to her credit, she does muster up enough courage to give you a nod. You return the gesture, and sit beside her, and begin dragging yourself out of your physical confinement. Your body, now completely relaxed, falls softly on Akane’s shoulder.

Poor girl.

If that monster will hold onto its threat, it will for sure target you. So the best you can do is get enough distance from Akane and Chie so that whatever happens won’t endanger them.

You manage to get to the third floor, when your reikaku picks up a clear, strong signal, filled with bloodlust.

Located on the roof, the deformed soul of Kinji appears. He no longer resembles a human, instead taking various aspects of animals and bugs, but the most prominent being the mosquito. His mask forms last, the white bone-liquid substance flowing out of his mouth to cover his face. Thus, his transformation is complete. His lust for blood, stronger than ever.

You could’ve gone outside, but your instinct says that would only make you an open target. The school corridors gave you the best chances of survival right now. He’d have to find a way inside first, and assuming he’s as big as the other hollows you’ve seen so far, he’ll have a hard time moving in here.

You probably only have a few seconds to figure out a plan.

You didn’t even have two seconds. Like smoke, the hollow seems to vanish, only for a void to open on the wall beside you, from which the creature lunges, aiming to impale you with that creepy long nose-thing.

Fortunately, your reikaku serves you well even here, and you manage to dodge this attack. As the mosquito-like hollow recovers, it turns to look at you.

Up close, you can see his mask much clearer. It looks like the face of a madman grinning, with spiked teeth, and a long nose-like protrusion that you’d expect from a mosquito, with the color changing to black at the very end. But what’s most odd, is that the mask extends far behind his head as well, and a large slightly translucent sack sticks out from there, with some redness inside. You’re pretty sure that it is meant for blood, and that nose of his is how he gets it.

You definitely don’t want to see what happens if he gets you with it.

The hollow chases you throughout the hallway, laughing in its distorted voice. You keep dodging him with your crude shunpo, but just barely, and he knows this.

“What’s wrong, rabbit? Ehehehehe! Getting tired? Want a rest?” he keeps taunting you.

If this keeps up, you won’t have any stamina left. So you decide to switch towards the offensive. And what’s better than a surprise attack at that too?

Just as the bloodsucker is about to taunt, you reverse your direction with shunpo and gather reiatsu around your fist like last time. It doesn’t matter how you deliver your punch, you muse, but how much reiatsu you can focus in the direction of the punch.

You aim for the head as that’s what you were told a hollow’s weak point is, but unfortunately you instead connect with its abdomen. Your attack packs a very generous wound, singing a lot of flesh.

The hollow is quick to smack you away, sending you flying towards the end of the corridor. You manage to cushion the impact with reiatsu just enough that you don’t lose consciousness. As you look at the hollow, you see the wound you made sizzling close, regenerating.

Shit… so damage anywhere else won’t last much at all.

“You piece of shit, you think you’re hot stuff, yeah? Well I’m going to ENJOY abusing, skinning, violating, and then finally eating you!”

He quickly closes the distance between you two and puts his hand to your throat before you manage to get away.

“Thank ‘you’ for the meal, bitch!” he laughs and impales his nose into your shoulder. You scream out, the pain something completely different than anything you’ve felt before.

Not only do you feel a disorienting wave wash over you, which you assume is from his venom, but like your life force is being drained.

This is not good at all.

You might actually die like this.

You reach deep inside again, pleading for anything to save you from this predicament.

Deep, deep inside, below your thoughts, below your senses, are your primal emotions. And within those, power stirs.

The world crawls to a stop, as time doesn’t pass as quick. Then it all turns to black, and you only see a void around you. Shadows moving back and forth that you just manage to separate from the pitch black background.

“Give me power!” you affirm your thought, and you feel the energy surge within you. You swear you can hear faint laughter from your surroundings.

“I said give me power!” you shout out, even though your mouth doesn’t move. More laughter comes from around you, until a feminine voice calls back from the abyss.

“Ask, and you shall receive..”

As the hollow of Kinji’s soul readies to suck out your blood, he freezes in place as your reiatsu spikes enormously. His nose stuck inside of your shoulder, he feels the full effect of your presence, and the purple-black reiatsu surrounds him, as if choking him.

He let’s go of his hand from your throat as he struggles to find whatever is suffocating him, and you slide off of the mosquito-nose-thing on his mask, which is left with a bloody trail.

You’re on your knees on the ground, but your gaze is fixated on the hollow, like the web of a spider keeping him in place as he struggles to break free of it.

You’ve channeled your fear… no, not just your fear. Your anger, your frustration, and much more into this. The creature in front of you no doubt feels the full scale of your primal emotions.

And then you feel it. The bloodlust of this hollow. His consuming hunger. His regrets. His desires. His mind is like an open book to you right now, free to be violated and ripped apart.

Your mouth curls into a wicked grin.

He is completely paralyzed and vulnerable right now, and you won’t let this opportunity slide. You muster your reiatsu once again into your arm and throw one last punch at the hollow’s mask.

The effect is violent and explosive. The hollow is sent flying down the corridor, damaging the interior as he tumbles. You broke his mask alright… but apparently not all of it.

You can see Kinji’s face now, who screams in pain for a solid minute before growing numb enough to take in his surroundings. He looks confused as hell, as if he was woken up from a nightmare. You limp towards him, your eyes still fixated on him. On his side, in his haze, he only makes out a pair of purple-glowing eyes.

“W-What the fuck is going on?!” he demands. As he looks down at his arms, he notices his monstrous change.

“You lost yourself,” you say, coming closer.

“S-Stay away!” he shouts.

“You thought you had control,” you almost whisper, “but you are not, never were.”

“You could not live with your own failure. In the end, you lost everything to your desire to be a ruler, and became a slave instead.”

Kinji is panicking, trying to escape, but finds that he is still, at least partially, paralyzed.

As you stand in front of him, you raise your open palm towards him, focusing your reiatsu.

“And a fly trapped in a spider’s web has nowhere to go, and thus becomes its slave.”

Your power and words seem to have a profound effect on him as you still feel his mind, parts of it restructured. His eyes briefly glow purple like yours, and then subside, with foam coming out of his mouth.

You don’t know exactly what changed, as the link is severed. Kinji remains limp, barely conscious, while his mask is slowly reforming. You also feel that same weird void appearing around him.

You decide to do something which every fiber of your body tells you you’ll regret:

You spare him.

Kinji’s hollow body fades into the dark void, and you are left alone in the school building, the corridors damaged and walls broken here and there. With the adrenaline subsiding, you slump down onto the ground.

“Heh, looks like I’ve lost a bunch of blood…” you say to noone in particular. You lose consciousness.

You only see darkness around you, until suddenly you find a tree stump in front of you. Slowly but surely some land begins to expand from its root, and from there, water. Beyond the pond, a vast forest.

Shaking your head for a moment to reorient your senses, you find yourself standing on an island in the middle of a lake, which is surrounded by a forest. The sky is clearly dawning, and you hear whispers all around you.

The tree stump that you saw initially has one half already growing new sprouts and vegetation, facing towards the lighter part of the sky, while on the opposite side is just decay and some fungus growing.

“Hello?” you call out, but don’t hear a response.

>...

“Helloooo!” Kisuke greets you mere inches away from your face as you come back to your senses. While by reflex you would have punched him in his annoying face by now, your body doesn’t listen, and instead you just remain lying down.

You glance around a few times and recognize this place as Urahara’s shop. At least, it matches the rest of the interior when you were there. Plus Mr. Hat-And-Clogs being here kind of confirms it.

“What the hell were you thinking?!” you hear Hisashi’s voice as he enters the room. “Going after a hollow on your own, are you INSANE?!”

“Loud…” you mumble as you stir in the bedroll. Based on the feeling, this is your physical one.

He sighs. “Still.. I’m relieved you’re okay.”

“My friends… Akane-san, Chie-chan, are they okay?” you ask as you try to sit upright with Hisashi’s assistance.

“They’re all fine,” Kisuke waves his fan around, “They’re drinking tea with Tessai right now.”

You sigh in relief. It pains you however that you had to involve them like this, but at least they’re unhurt.

“What happened after I lost consciousness?” you ask, moving your fingers in succession to get a feel on them.

“Hisashi-kun?” Urahara nods at him. He scratches the back of his head.

“I arrived a little too late. The moment I sensed a new hollow, I bolted towards its direction. But by the time I got there, it was gone, and you were out of your body, lying with a wound.”

“So I put you back into your physical body. That girl, with the long brown hair, could see me. Well, not exactly but almost.”

“Hat-And-Clogs-san happened to be close by so we brought you all here. Since then, you slept for two days straight.”

Wait. Two days? Fuck.

“Shit, I was out for that long?! Oh man, the teacher’s gonna kill me..” you complain.

“Oh, your school’s been closed since then,” Kisuke explains. “The humans are trying to figure out what happened. Silly creatures, aren’t they!”

Well, that does help things out.

“My friends stayed here for two days as well?”

“No, but they insisted on coming to visit so they’d be here when you wake up.”

“Kisuke-sensei,” you ask, wrestling with your thoughts.

“Regarding hollows… are all of them truly mindless creatures?”

Instead of Kisuke it is Hisashi who answers instead.

“Of course they are. Hollows think of nothing other than eating innocent souls. That’s why we fight them, and return them to the cycle, along with the souls they’ve eaten.”

You glare at him for a moment.

“What?”

“I didn’t ask you, dumbass.”

Hisashi groans.

“Well, Hisashi-kun is right-”

“See?” Hisashi gloats.

“-but he’s kind of wrong.” Kisuke finishes his sentence.

“Tell me, have you ever been completely taken over by an emotion?”

You dig into your thoughts, doing your best to recall anything like that. There are some faint memories from your childhood, especially the few times you got angry at other kids teasing you.

“Not particularly,” you admit.

“Hollows are driven by two things: Firstly, their burden to this world; and secondly, their extreme hunger for reiryoku which they cannot generate themselves.”

“As long as they are afflicted with these two obsessions, they are the mindless creatures that shinigami, such as Hisashi, hunt.”

You narrow your eyes. “But if those two things are fixed somehow, even temporarily… then they could be capable of reason?”

Urahara’s eyes are once again shadowed by his hat.

“In theory. I’ve yet to see it happen.”

That did get you thinking. Your memories are hazy at best regarding your fight with the hollow Kinji, but one thing is clear: When you connected to his mind, it was definitely a large chaos with hunger and obsession with control at its head. But there was also a lot more beneath all that, shreds of humanity.

“Did anything interesting… happen, Koharu-chan?” Kisuke asks you, his voice changing into that of a scientist wanting to see the results of an experiment. That is, your guts are saying he probably knows much more than he lets on.

“Kind of,” you say without really revealing anything.

“I really should go see my friends now though, they’re probably worried sick,” you deflect, doing your best to get up. Your balance is off and you feel like just falling back onto the bedroll, but Hisashi keeps you stable enough for you to readjust.

Kisuke nods and points behind him towards the door. “They’re in the lounge, Tessai’s probably making you some tea as we speak!”

Akane and Chie are being entertained by Jun, who’s having a blast telling them all kinds of outlandish stories. As they notice you, Chie instantly jumps up and attacks you with a hug. Akane follows behind shortly, patting you on the shoulder.

“We thought you died!” Chie bawls.

“...She’s exaggerating,” Akane rolls her eyes.

“No I’m not! I was sooo scared!”

“In any case, we’re glad to see you in one piece,” Akane gives you a warm smile.

After enough hugging that was making your back hurt, you all settle back on the table, where Tessai brings you a cup of tea as well.

“So, um,” you scratch the back of your head, “How much do you know?”

“Tessai-san here explained things,” Akane says, “I mean, I sort of get it, but at the same time I don’t.”

“But we do know you saved us, Koharu-chan!” Chie interjects.

“More like got you into trouble…” you mumble.

“Nonsense!” Akane waves her hand and then leans back, sipping on the tea.

“But who knew that ghosts were really… real?” she muses, more to herself than to anyone in particular.

You feel bad for them. Before they could just live through life without worrying about ghosts and hollows, but now, you don’t think they can just return to that life.

“Well, now that you know about this… what are you two going to do?” you ask.

The two remain silent for a solid minute, listening to the clock in the room tick with every passing second.

Finally, Akane sighs loudly. “To be honest, even if I’d go back to school life and pretend nothing happens, it won’t change the fact that I’m aware of things I shouldn’t be.”

“You know me, Koharu, I’m not good at ignoring things, especially ones that threaten me or my friends.”

Chie stares down her cup of tea, at the circular waves that bounce off the edges to the rhythm of her own heartbeat.

“I just.. want to forget,” she finally says. “I’m not brave nor strong. I just… want things to be like they were before.”

You expected this pretty much, that’s just how their personalities are.

CHOOSE ONE FOR AKANE:
>You don’t have to ignore. I’m learning to fight bad ghosts, you should too.
>I feel you, but you shouldn’t waste your time alive dealing with the dead.

CHOOSE ONE FOR CHIE:
>I understand, Chie-chan, but if you do nothing, you’ll be in danger again someday.
>That’s completely okay. I’m sure Kisuke-sensei can help with that.

Hmm, broadly speaking, entering a negotiation/intimidation/control thing with them and then summoning them for battles. In other words, i meant as in controlling them and using them as Pokémon.

Hell, in Persona 5 they are even stored in masks.

You nod to both, sighing. You’re not exactly a seasoned veteran of the ghost world yourself, but you are more experienced than them, and it’s about time you return the favor for all the help they’ve given you so far.

“You don’t have to ignore, Akane,” you say, looking straight into her eyes. “Kisuke-sensei is teaching me how to fight bad ghosts. I’m sure he can help you with that too.”

“Tessai-san… is there anything in the shop that can, you know, help with Chie’s decision?”

The big man strokes his moustache as he thinks for a moment. He answers you in a deep voice.

“Well, we do have memory-altering devices,” he explains. “The shinigami usually use them on humans who got in unintentional contact with spiritual matters. Or when they need to make somebody disappear.”

Chie looks at him, sort of hopeful. She’s definitely conflicted about this though, whether she should resort to something like that.

“Well, probably don’t have to decide now, Chie-chan,” you assure her. “Just know that it’s possible, if you feel like you can’t forget on your own. Will hollows come after her, Tessai-san?”

Tessai nods. “As long as she can’t see the spirit world, she should be fine. It’s hard to say.”

You turn back to Akane. “And if something ever comes up, me and Akane will keep you safe. Right, Akane?”

“Damn straight!” she says, patting Chie on her back.

And so concludes this weekend’s (plus a little extra) session. We’re halfway through Urahara’s week (it’s the beginning of day 4 of 7), and you got a closer sneak peak at one of your main powers through that lucky crit.

Suffice to say, that won’t be the last time we’ll see mosquito-man.

I’ll update the character sheets and social links for this thread.

Next session will be on Saturday, using this same thread, since thread lifespan on /qst/ is much longer than I anticipated. Sadly we’ll be on permasage though.

Expect more training, helping out Akane with hers, potentially seeing Hisashi’s shikai for the first time too. Stay tuned!

Feedback, questions, thoughts, ideas are all welcome as always. I’ll be around to answer anything.
>>
Nice one, thanks OP.
Btw, which Division does Hisashi belongs to?
>>
>>4451007
>Btw, which Division does Hisashi belongs to?

It's still to be decided. Originally, I planned to have you roll 1d13 to choose a decision and go with that.

But on the other hand, there are some divisions that would suit him better than the others, such as 1st, 6th, 7th, 9th and 13th, based on the division descriptions and their captains.

So I'm thinking whether to let everyone discuss and vote on a division instead.

Thoughts?

For sure. That, and he's probably not the only one to be very, very interested in Koharu. Cough, Aizen, cough

Considering Mayuri dissected various specimen, both live and souls left and right, I'm surprised he was never sentenced to anything by central 46. Especially considering that Kisuke pulled him out of the Maggot's Nest, so technically he should've been very suspicious. Very much after Kisuke's sentencing and escape with the visored.

Ah, I was thinking more of what the level was at the end of the thread, my bad. But I can do total too:

Especially because of the ghost of the principal.
>>
So to plan a bit ahead, I had a couple ideas:

1) Would it be reasonable for Koharu to get a few dumbells to workout some? It would make sense that if the astral body is a copy of the physical one, that strengthening the physical one should also proportionally strengthen the astral one. Emphasis on ab-workouts.
(Full-disclosure I mainly think it would be funny for the character to have a shredded six-pack but a mostly slim/unimpressive physique other than that).

2) If it comes up, I'd prefer to figure out how to use the power that didn't get used against the mosquito monster next time training with Urahara.

2.5) Since the spooder-power is kind of creepy, Koharu should keep it to himself for a little while just in case it's considered taboo by Shinigami after Hisashi got assmad hearing Koharu asking those questions about Hollows. Maybe try practicing it in secret.
>>
>>4453469
I’m all for all 3 ideas, especially 1, although I feel like Koharu needs to be more fit, become a lean trap who can defend his bussy physically when needed

Oh dear god no. Koharu will stay a trap.

>>4453469
>1) workout
There'll be chances to bump up physique for sure. Doing it with the astral body is pretty easy as Koharu has no problems in that body. It's the physical body that suffers from fragility, partially because of the mismatch between the astral and physical body.
>2) using the other power
There'll be a definite chance to explore this next session. Urahara has a very devilish lesson in mind, reminiscent of the pit where Ichigo ends up in his training.
>2.5) keep power secret
Sounds reasonable. Given the laws of SS, anything that allows to harness or control hollow or hollowlike powers will trigger the central 46.

These questions and thoughts are good, I will definitely do my best to keep them in mind while writing the quest and present you with a diverse set of opportunities.
>>
>>4453563
>Doing it with the astral body is pretty easy as Koharu has no problems in that body. It's the physical body that suffers from fragility
Even if the "gains" are meager, I wouldn't think exercising with the physical body would be a total waste of time if it was done routinely, even if it's just light jogging/calisthenics/dumbells. Better than doing nothing anyway.
>>
Got to say I feel like physical exercise with our real body will be useless. We are starting out so far behind that training will cut into out spiritual training, social life and ghost hunting. Going to have to sideline out a noticeable chunking of our life for it. It would be best if we focused on spiritual ways to cover those bases, learning Kido would be the best idea as we already seem to favour spirit energy.

You are Tamaki Koharu and it’s been two days since the incident with the ghost of the principal. You fortunately survived it, albeit with a wound, and slept through two days straight. That, and you did involve your two best friends into the mess. While Chie decided to do her best and forget, Akane joined you with training under Urahara’s tutelage.

Now you are back in the huge training area underneath the shop. Akane’s reaction to the place was shouting in place for a long while with her jaw open, much to the satisfaction of Kisuke.

Akane is set to train with Tessai and Jun, while Kisuke wants to focus on you this time.

“Well then, Koharu-kun,” he says while holding onto his stupid-looking white-green striped hat.

“Up until this point we’ve kind of… went ahead of ourselves. I wasn’t expecting you to mimic hohō and hakuda just like that. So before we continue, I’d like to know something.”

“Why do you want to become stronger?” he asks with a dead serious face.

You take a moment to think. The question brings out a multitude of thoughts and emotions, but there’s one that’s the strongest.

“I don't want others to feel like they have to protect me and put themselves in danger,” you say with some resolution. “I want myself to be in control of my own life, not have it in the hands of another.”

Kisuke seems to be satisfied with your answer.

“Very well!” he says as he clasps his fan close, lifting his face to reveal that goofy face of his.

“If you truly feel that way, then I shall give you the tools to do so,” he smiles, and once again lowers his head so that his hat shadows his eyes.

“But to do so to the best of my ability, I’ll need to properly know of whatever you experience. I doubt either of us believes that you’re just a person with a soul too fat for its body.”

The metaphor absolutely irks you and for a moment you’re ready to retort, but that serious expression keeps you silent. Kisuke is definitely onto you, and if you want to keep anything to yourself from this guy, you’ll have to do it with an extraordinary amount of work.

You simply nod.

“Let’s get to it then!” Kisuke happily responds and once again bumps you with that cane of his, which sends your soul flying off into the distance like a cannonball.

“Oops.. I forgot...”

For one day he simply spars with you and makes you understand the very basics of hohō and hakuda. It all comes down to reiatsu and applying it in such a way that fits what you want to do.

You also tell him about the weird ribbons you manifested during your ghost-hunt with Chie and Akane. Apparently, it was a high level technique basing off reikaku which manifests all reiatsu into their distinct sources based on their direction. Very useful, but requires you to stop and concentrate.

Akane during that time does her best to just spend time outside her body without suffocating and not freaking out about a chain dangling and connecting her physical and spiritual body. She does make fairly good progress.

So that’s how it would’ve been like if you couldn’t separate your soul from your body so easily.

The next day school is still closed due to repairs, so both you and Akane use that time to go to Urahara’s shop to continue your training.

And this time, it seems Urahara is for sure, absolutely, without a doubt…

Up to no good.

“Alright,” Kisuke twirls his cane as Tessai stands beside him. “I had this brilliant idea! I’m 99% sure it’ll give you a breakthrough!”

“Kisuke…” you begin, sensing both his excitement and that he’ll do something that’ll make you hate him even more.

“And the 1%?” you ask.

“Oh best not to worry about that, Koharu-chan!” he deflects.

At least it seems that Akane is with Jun. They’re probably doing something nice and safe. Probably.

“You know what? Fine,” you give in, looking in the direction of your physical body lying on a beach bed of sorts. “What’s the worst that could happen,” you mutter.

“Excellent answer!” Kisuke spreads his arms with a glee.

“But if that 1% happens I'll make sure to leave a can of tuna here every day for all stray cats to enjoy!” you threaten.

Kisuke just nods. “Oh don’t worry. But as it happens, I do like stray cats anyway.”

Wait… that sounds foreboding...

“Tessai!” Kisuke calls his friend. The big man nods and puts his hands together, with yellow crackling energy emitting from them.

“Hainawa!” he shouts, sending that yellow energy in the shape of a rope at you, wrapping tightly around your torso, effectively immobilizing your arms against it. You didn’t have enough time to do anything against it, and those ropes are incredibly durable. You find it even hard to breathe with it squeezing you, making you cough.

“Kis.. uke… what’s the.. fucking deal?!” you try your best to shout while trying to get air.

“A small handicap, that’s all!” he explains with that bastardly amused expression of his. He nods to Tessai, who then shoves his hand into the ground, which begins to rumble lightly. The floor underneath you breaks completely in a perfect circle, and you fall through it.

“KISUKEEEEE!” your scream echoes as you fall down.

“Have fun!” Kisuke waves from the top.

The pit looks like it’s pretty deep, and it’s extremely dark. In the split second that you began seeing the ground due to the yellow light of Tessai’s spell, you mustered enough reiatsu to effectively cushion your fall. It still hurt like a bitch. It takes you a moment to get your senses back. While the yellow light does illuminate the rocky pit somewhat, it’s bright enough that your eyes can’t adjust to the darkness further ahead.

And that’s when your sixth sense kicks in.

This pit… you feel hollow reiatsu. A lot of it. Soon enough, pairs of red glowing eyes appear one after another in the darkness, and one even approaches you, revealing a white mask that reflects the light very well. It looks hungry. Very hungry.

The hollow isn’t large nor as strong as the hollows you’ve seen so far. In a way, it feels almost somehow weakened. That still doesn’t solve the problem that you are partially restrained.

Your train of thought however is interrupted as the hollows all begin to shriek in unison. You feel their hunger and bloodlust spike up more and more.

God damn it Kisuke.

Being in front of all these hollows… it’s frightening. By all sense you should be paralyzed by fear. Yet, you don’t feel like that. You know you aren’t that good at fighting, but the hollows you’ve experienced so far were far more menacing. It is with this odd source of confidence that you managed to dodge the incoming attack.

The hollows throw themselves at you one by one, sometimes in pairs, but you manage to use shunpo to avoid their attacks. Instead of using the ground, you decide to land on the heads of the hollows instead, focusing reiatsu on your feet. While Kisuke is an asshole and deserves an eternity of beating for this, he did manage to make you quite alright with hakuda.

Some masks get completely obliterated, destroying the hollow in the process, while others are severely damaged, forcing the hollows to flee and lick their wounds until their masks regenerate.

As much as this tactic seems to work, you are beginning to get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of the weak hollows. You devise a clever plan to counter this, to try and use their own attacks to destroy this glowing rope. It’s dangerous, but you’ve got no choice. You either do it, or you’ll be eaten by dozens of hollows.

You execute your plan a few times, but each time you dodge just a little too far, and their attacks miss completely. Finally, you get one that’ll reach you…

But instead you get hit from the side by another hollow! In focusing so much on this plan, you neglected looking out for surprises, and now it cost you.

The attack sends you off flying into a wall, where you stick for a moment before beginning to fall down.

“Shit…” you mutter. That hurt.

Surprisingly though, the binding spell seems to have shielded you from some of the damage.

If this clash showed you anything it’s that this golden rope is freakishly strong. While you probably can’t get rid of it, you do think you might make use of it.

You land with a thump on the ground, and the hollows instantly dart towards your position, seeing their chance to finally get a meal. However, they weren’t expecting you to count on it.

With the power of shunpo, you fling yourself at one of the hollows, aiming to hit them with the glowing kidō rope, and hit it you do. The mask explodes into pieces and the hollow’s body begins slowly disintegrating. While most of the hollows are hell-bent on chasing you, you do notice some of them stopping and… eating the body of the hollow you just killed?

That’s… kind of sickening.

You don’t have time to dwell on that however, as you are constantly assaulted by hollows. Seriously, where are they coming from? It grows more problematic though as you notice that the new hollows are stronger than the first one’s you faced in the beginning. It wouldn’t take long before you’re overwhelmed.

And that’s when you felt something reaching out to you… from the inside.

That feeling of calmness, the flowing river in a garden full of life, a state of zen came to you. You hear a calm, soft voice speak to you:

“Surrender your senses, find peace… and reach out with your one true sense!”

At first you are confused, especially while throwing yourself around with shunpo to both kick the hollows and use Tessai’s kidō against the hollows, but the calm feeling brings you to do as the voice says.

You close your eyes, surrendering your vision. You shut down your ears, surrendering your hearing. You surrender your sense of smell, taste, even touch… until you sense nothing but yourself. And then, you reach out to your sixth sense.

Your eyes open, glowing bright emerald.

You are not looking, yet you see. You are not listening, yet you hear.

What you are feeling is alien to you, yet you are completely aware of everything. You are flash stepping from hollow to hollow, destroying them or gravely injuring them. You don’t feel touching them, nor the blood flying onto you and staining your clothes. You only feel the presence of the hollows, clear shapes. You feel their great hunger, their rage, their sorrow, their regrets.

Hollows die left and right as you grow more and more into both shunpo and hakuda. At first only the masks are shattered, but more and more you completely obliterate their heads as you sense the weak spots in their very souls. The exact points which fracture the entire soul when exploited.

Then, the hollows stop.

You can feel them all around you, but now something else has overpowered their instincts.

Fear.

Their fear is greater than their hunger.

And so, you are left with a somewhat weird peace.

You breathe in, you breathe out.

As much as you want to just get out of this pit, you’ve found yourself in a position you’ve never been before.

A position of power. Of control. And you could technically do anything down here right now.

The ability you’re using right now is powerful, but exhausting. Add on top of that the fact that you’ve been flash stepping and slamming hollows left and right, you’re not sure you have much energy left. And if you were to fall unconscious from exhaustion here, it would be your doom.

Yet despite this fact, you insist in attempting something.

In this state, you reach within, towards your core, searching for your other power, the power to forcibly control, the power to dominate. You feel something… but you quickly encounter a problem.

You have no fear, no rage, no sorrow in this state right now. This power to sense beyond your five senses comes from being zen. Yet your power to dominate has always come from some primal and strong emotion.

“Damn it,” you mutter, realizing this limitation, as the ability fades away at your attempt to bring forth strong emotions. The return of your five senses hits you like a brick, disorienting you for a moment. Fortunately, the hollows seem to still be afraid of you.

You refuse to give up however. You approach the closest hollow, fear returning to you with each step. Whether it’s your own fear or the fear of the creature in front of you, you’re not sure, yet it could very well be both combined. You would reach out your hand towards it were it not for the binding, instead you stare intently, focusing on its mask, and you tap into the familiar deep void. It’s faint… but it’s strong enough, especially with a weak hollow such as this.

Your eyes switch to the purple color, and your mind partially connects with the hollows. It feels fear indeed, but now it also feels something else. Perhaps curiosity?

Standing right before the hunched down hollow, your head meets that of the hollow’s.

The connection between the two of you becomes much stronger, and you feel through the spectrum of emotions and chaotic thoughts it has. You see images of a wasteland, of thousands of different hollows, accompanied by extreme fear. This weak hollow has escaped a realm filled with its kind, ones much stronger than itself.

No wonder it surrendered so easy.

“I can kill you at a moment’s notice,” you say, taking a step back.

“Obey, and you may live a little longer.”

As you intend to try and climb the hollow to get on its back, it seems your intentions are conveyed enough that the hollow lowers its body to help you. You jump on top of it and sit, like you would riding a horse, you move your eyes towards the small hole in the ceiling, through which a sharp, painfully white light emanates from.

“Go!” you order.

And off the hollow jumped with great physical strength.

You… didn’t think this through to the end.

As the beast leaps towards the hole along the walls, you are straining to hold onto it with just your legs. The whole thing ends with you getting launched off of its back towards the hole, where you take a quick shunpo to take the final stretch and out of the hollow pit.

The bright light blinds you completely, but it’s Kisuke and Tessai who look at you with shock, their jaws hanging.

Your face and your school outfit is practically drenched in hollow blood.

“Wow,” Kisuke finally finds his words, “N-Now this isn’t something you see everyday!”

You take slow steps towards him, your blood boiling. Kisuke takes a few instinctive steps backwards, then turns to Tessai for support only to find him completely gone from the scene.

You headbutt him with all the force and leftover reiatsu you have, sending him some meters away.

Finally, with your deed done, you pass out.

You wake up, back in your physical body, still exhausted. Kisuke, Tessai, Jun and Akane are all around you.

“How long?” you ask.

“Some four hours,” Jun says, his worried face turning into a grin. “You got us worried!”

Slowly, you rise up, holding your head. You’re still disoriented.

“You are a bundle of surprises, Koharu-chan!” Kisuke smiles as he fans some air towards your direction.

“I’d say we were beyond successful.”

“I… have questions,” you shake your head, dismissing Kisuke’s at his attempt to, what you assume, ‘go through the experiment details.’

“Firstly, what the fuck?” you begin.

“Secondly, why the HELL do you have a pit filled with HOLLOWS?”

“And thirdly, what were you THINKING in throwing me there while BOUND?!”

Kisuke makes the face of a child getting scolded, until you finish.

“Now, now, I did warn you and it went just fine, didn’t it?”

You are about to say something, but then you finally get your vision unblurred and you see Hisashi standing behind Kisuke, making the most menacing expression on his face that you’ve ever seen.

“Kisuke-san… I just happened to overhear something… interesting,” he begins, cracking his knuckles along the way. Kisuke slowly turns his head, and you can swear you hear a noise from his neck like that of a squeaky door.

“Well-” Kisuke tries to defend himself, but is met with Hisashi’s fist, followed by him throwing Kisuke over his shoulder and continuing to pummel him in every possible way he can think of. After the first few sets you lose track of the two due to the smoke covering them.

“Wow, he’s sure angry at him,” Akane whistles, looking at you with a curious look.

“Don’t,” you sigh, knowing full well what she’s gonna say.

“How goes your own training? I’d rather listen to that.”

Akane shrugs. “Slowly. Tessai-sensei says I’m getting my… reiatsu up, that’s the term he used I think. It’s not much yet.”

You look at Tessai, who nods.

“She’s just human. Humans don’t normally have any powers like yours, Koharu-san,” he explains. You’re left wondering why you just didn’t choose to talk with Tessai over Kisuke. He seems so much more mature and serious. None of that annoying goofiness.

Soon enough, Kisuke returns with a ton of bruises and bumps on his head, along with Hisashi who feels satisfied enough. He gives you a kind of odd look. Wait, is he actually worried about you?

“Well asw I wus sawyin,” Kisuke begins, unable to talk properly with all those injuries. He does quickly heal his face enough to allow him to speak properly.

“The pit was an experiment me and Tessai conducted. That place is partially connected to Hueco Mundo…”

Hisashi almost chokes.

“WHAT?! Are you TRYING to give the Gotei 13 more reason to hunt you down and get more evidence for your past deeds?! You know I’ll have to fucking report this?!”

“Now, now, calm down,” Kisuke sighs, pretending to be scared.

“Wait, what’s Hueco Mundo? Is that spanish?” you ask.

“Hueco Mundo, Kage no Sekai, Schattenreich, Skyggeverden… it has many names. It is the shadow world, the realm of hollows.”

You swallow hard.

“The whole thing is reinforced with kidō barriers of extreme magnitudes, and the connection filters out any presence too strong. To hollows of greater strength the rift is undetectable and impassable. I assure you, it is safer than the Rukongai on most days.”

“We’ve worked on it for years to get even some hints of that place in the present day. Almost no shinigami has set foot there in centuries.”

“But in that sense, the project was a failure. But, it just so happened to be of use for Koharu-chan,” Kisuke said, looking at you.

“I saw most of it, but I sure would love to hear it all from your perspective.”

I'd also like to go with the decline to talk option, but if pressed then ask what Kisuke and pals noticed first then fill in the blanks.
I wouldn't mind elaborating a little about how Koharu went Ultra Instinct but I'd want to downplay the part about controlling the hollow if they didn't already know.
Like oversimplify it to something like "then I used one of the hollows as a boost to jump out".

If anything we absolutely ca not let Hiasashi know about the Hollow control. If anyone in SS finds out about it it will get to people whose attention we do not want. Not just based Kurotsuchi but someone(s) from the 46 and nobles houses would crawl right up our ass.

And the in-character explanation is pretty easy too since now that Koharu knows Kisuke is on the wrong side of "the law", it might be a bad idea to blab about everything to "the law".

You sigh, pinching your nosebridge.

“Ask me later, asshole.”

“Jeesh, okay, okay,” Kisuke puts his hands in the air in defeat.

Why do you get the feeling that he cares more about you as a research subject rather than as a person?

Everyone moves on to eat dinner. The fake sky in this huge training area makes it hard to keep track of time in any sensible way. Tessai brings food for everyone. Mostly onigiris with all kinds of stuffing inside of them: salmon, cucumber, tofu, egg. Then there’s also noodles and fried chicken, along with a wakame salad.

You’ve kind of had enough of Kisuke and his antics, so you decide to eat separately from everyone else. Hisashi however decides to join as well.

“No sulking,” he waves his finger as he sits down with his food.

“Wha-? I wasn’t sulking!” you deny. “Jeez, I just wanted some peace, and you had to come and ruin that. Thanks.”

“You’re welcome!” he happily responds, much to your annoyance. You two eat for a moment in just silence, which you kind of appreciate.

“Are you really all fine?” Hisashi finally asks.

“I think so. Why are you so worried?”

Hisashi groans. “I’m the one who introduced you to that man, I feel responsible, okay?!”

“Well.. don’t! I don’t want others to worry about me! That’s why I’m training!”

“Jeez, here I am, trying to make sure you’re alright, and this is how you thank me?”

“Well I didn’t ask you to!” you respond, your frustration growing by the second.

“Yeah? Well fine!” Hisashi says, and angrily munches on his food.

You sigh. This could’ve gone better, but you’ve had enough of people worrying about you for a lifetime.

>Just eat in silence, it’s for the best, and it’ll calm both of you down.

You take a few deep breaths, and calm down.

“Hisashi… I’m sorry. I guess I overreacted..” you say, averting your gaze.

Hisashi looks at you, and then to the side as well.

“Yeah, I.. understand. I overreacted too. So sorry as well.”

“It’s just.. all my life, everyone’s been constantly making sure I’m fine, not giving me a moment to breathe. It took me time to get used to Akane and Chie-chan too.”

Hisashi nods. “Well, it’s my duty as a shinigami of the Gotei 13 to protect the humans of this world. Even from creeps like Kisuke.”

“The Gotei 13, both you and Kisuke keep talking about that. What is it?”

“Well,” Hisashi begins, scratching his forehead. “Think of it like an army made out of thirteen divisions. Each one has a Captain, a Lieutenant, some seated officers and then a mass of unranked shinigami. The captains are freakishly strong though… usually stronger than their own division combined.”

“The job of the Gotei 13 is to keep Soul Society and the Human World safe, and to guide souls from the latter to the former.”

You sort of keep up with his explanation. “Right… so where do you fit in that picture?”

“Me?” Hisashi asks, giving you a confident smirk.

“I’m the Lieutenant of the 13th Division.”

You blink. “So that means you’re strong?”

Hisashi nods boastfully, his arms crossed.

“...But you would’ve been in deep trouble without me with that angler hollow.”

Hisashi drops his head as if a stone had hit him on the back of it.

“I already told you, we can’t fight at full power in the Human World. If we did, we’d cause significant consequences on it. And that usually means destruction.”

You talk for a small bit about his positioning in this region and experiences, until you decide to return to the others. And there, you’re greeted with a surprise.

“Another kid? I swear, one day somebody’s going to call you out on your questionable choice of proteges.”

“Now, now, let’s not jump to any weird conclusions!” Kisuke defends himself.

“Mugurama Kensei,” the man introduces himself briefly.

“Kensei-san works with me to keep… well, make sure everything’s fine on this side of the realms.”

You give him a light bow. The guy is huge and looks strong as hell, which boosts his already intimidating looks. Mugurama is definitely suppressing his reiatsu, but even based on what you can sense you can deduce that he’s freakishly powerful.

“Tamaki Koharu,” you respond right after swallowing hard.

Hisashi is about to say something stupid, so you dive your elbow into his ribs.

“..Takenaka… Hisashi..” he barely introduces himself.

Kensei just nods, dismissing the two of you quite fast.

“In any case, Urahara, you should look into Naruki City as soon as possible. The hollow sightings and shinigami disappearances, they all point to him being behind it.”

Kisuke’s demeanor changes to that deadly serious one of his. It’s the contrast between his two personalities that scares you.

Kensei just shook his head. “Whatever. That’s all from me.”

As Kensei’s about to flash step away, Urahara stops him for a moment.

“Send my regards to everyone. And… tell Hiyori I said hi.”

And with that, Kensei disappears.

Afterwards, Urahara asked everyone to head off, which you assume is because of that message he received from this Kensei guy. Jun just returns to tending to the shop, but you, Akane and Hisashi have your own way to go.

You decide to head home with Akane. Hisashi waved you good bye, and left to do his duties with a flash step.

“Can you, you know, see him clearly?” you ask.

“Well, he’s still a little blurry,” she responds as you board the tram, “but I do see him.”

Looks like she’s still got a long way to go. Especially comparing to her now you’re left to wonder about yourself and your powers. Your training is much quicker with results, and there’s two clear powers that reside within you. Does Akane have something similar? If she does, then at this pace it might take a while to even figure out what it is.

“Well, I think you’re doing great!”

“I hope so,” Akane smiles, but is clearly a little frustrated.

“Well, even if it takes years, I’ll get to kicking ass, you just watch me!”

You can’t help but chuckle, which annoys Akane and she takes you in a headlock, teasing you.

You are quite happy for moments like these though. All this stuff about souls, hollows, gotei 13, hueco mundo… it’s so different from normal life. And little things like these, spending time with a friend, commuting home. It felt really nice.

Once Akane releases you from the headlock, you both stare out the windows on the opposite side of the tram, watching the scenery roll by.

“You know, I don’t know what I’d do without you,” you say.

“You’d always be lying in bed and never going to school,” she responds jokingly.

“Maybe…” you laugh. “But I did learn to like this life once I met you and Chie. No matter what’s with this spiritual world stuff, no matter how strong I feel outside my physical body, a part of me wants to keep returning to school with the two of you.”

You exchange some more smalltalk during the journey home, and Akane as always walks you to your doorstep. Wishing each other good night, you make yourself ready for bed, and slip into the sheets.

A beautiful full moon dotted the sky, illuminating the outskirts of Osaka.

>Meanwhile...

Eternal night consumes this realm, with only the ominous, ever-present moon with a hole inside of it to light up the wastes. The air ripples and distorts like one would see with extremely hot weather, but the feeling is instead ice cold.

This realm is Hueco Mundo, and it is the home to hollows.

One hollow in particular sits on a rock protruding from the sand. Unlike most regular hollows, his body isn’t big and burly, but lean, and his mask isn’t completely flat. From the part where his nose would be, a long, needle-like bit protrudes. At the back of his head sits a big sac, filled with dark red liquid.

Ever since his humiliating defeat by some simple soul, he has dedicated to becoming stronger. He wouldn’t be content with just satiating his hunger like the other hollows, no, he has ambition beyond survival.

And he couldn’t get the image of that girl out of his mind.

It drives him mad, his black hollow hole aching with every thought.

Not an hour went by as he welled in embarrassment, rage, and for some reason, fascination. It fueled him to hunt bigger prey. Normal souls didn’t cut it anymore. Instead, he filled his hunger with his brethren: hollows.

Disgusting, yet… delicious.

And so it came to be that two hollows, who attempted to ambush him, were lying in defeat before him. One something resembling a toad, the other something else entirely, like a living sculpture of rock.

They were lucky the mosquito-like hollow wasn’t hungry. But unfortunately to them, this hollow saw potential use in them.

“You two… Do you want to wreak havoc?” the hollow formed from the soul of Matsubara Kinji asked. “Do you want to bathe in blood and eat your fill?”

The two hollows, bloodied and severely injured, rose up.

“Do as I say and I’ll take you somewhere where you can feast to your heart’s content... “

The two hollows dropped their heads in submission.

“Excellent…”

Morning comes, beckoning you to wake up as the rays of the sunrise shine onto your eyes. Today school was back up and running, so that’s where you would go. You also have no idea whether Kisuke is even back yet, since if he left for Naruki City towards Tokyo, it might take a while.

You spend a good time with Akane and Chie, glad for once that you are in school. Even the victims of the ghost of the principal are back, though you can clearly see that they are traumatized. Apparently alongside the repairs, the police investigated the whole case thoroughly, but in the end found no culprit. Not that they even could if Kinji was still here, since they probably wouldn’t be able to see him.

You do wonder if sparing him was a good idea.

After school you and Akane visit Urahara’s shop. Only Jun is there, moving and stacking stuff.

“Sorry, the owner’s still away…” Jun says with a hint of sadness, scratching the back of his head and looking down at the floor.

“Can we adopt him?” Akane whispers to you. You just shrug her off with a smirk.

“It’s not your fault, Jun-kun,” you tell him. “Though I do feel salty. He promised me a full week…”

While Akane can continue her own training with Jun, you’re not sure what to do.

“Well,” you scratch the back of your head. “Go ahead, Akane. I’ll go look for Hisashi-san, since I doubt there’d be much use of me being here. I’ll leave my body here though, so keep an eye on it, alright?”

Akane nods, and you leave your body on one of the bedrolls in the shop, the one where you woke up after your fight with Kinji.

Now that you’ve managed to get the basics sort of down for shunpo, it feels so much easier getting around in your spiritual body. You make your way to the very top of the building, and look around, taking in the sight of Osaka.

You close your eyes for a moment, focusing on the feeling you had when you were tracking the ghost of Kinji. You believe Kisuke called it Reiraku. Soon enough, the different reiatsu that you feel begin to manifest into ribbons darting off to the sides, some pristine white and wide, others translucent and narrow. There’s some other colors in there as well though now, some red ones, one of which definitely matches Hisashi’s reiatsu signature.

Grabbing it that ribbon, your sixth sense locks onto Hisashi and you flash step in his direction. This will make for some good training too, you muse.

You find Hisashi near one of the railroads just as he finished performing konsō, a soul burial on a soul that was unable to pass on.

“What the- Koharu?! What are you doing here?” he asks.

“Well, I Kisuke isn’t at his shop, so I decided to bother you instead.”

Hisashi sighs, facepalming. “I swear..”

“Well, now that you’re here, maybe you can assist. There’s an increased amount of souls lingering today.”

You raise your eyebrow. “You mean you can’t sense them? Oh.. right, sorry, I forgot.” you say, hiding a small smirk behind your hand. Hisashi’s eye twitches for a moment.

“What’s so funny?” he asks.

“Nothing, Lieutenant,” you respond, closing your eyes and doing your best to map out the various faint reiatsu signals that don’t belong to living humans. He told the truth, there are quite a bit of them dotted around.”

“Did something happen?” you ask, frowning.

“A power shortage at one of the Hospitals,” he sighs. “Not just that, but backup power failed to start as well.”

“Worst thing is, it’s been six hours already and they still haven’t managed to bring power back.”

That’s… quite grim. No doubt all the patients that ran on life support in some form or another died, but if there’s still no power, that means none of the elevators work either.

“What caused it?” you ask, but Hisashi just shakes his head.

Nevertheless, the two of you start going around to find these wandering souls to send them safely to Soul Society.

Something does bother you about this all. Yes, there’s a surge in souls, but much less than what you’d kind of… expect.

“Hisashi, I think we should take a look at the hospital. Something’s bothering me.”

“Oh?” he asks, as he performs a soul burial on another lingering spirit. “What’s wrong?”

You scratch your head. “There’s… much less souls than what you’d expect. I mean, a hospital, out of any power for six hours, and only some two dozens of souls?”

“Don’t you think that’s.. too little?”

Hisashi ponders on what you said for a moment.

“Yeah, now that you mention it, it’s weird. Let’s go.”

With that the two of you get to the hospital, which is surrounded by fire trucks, extending their ladders towards the windows. They’re clearly ill-equipped for this sort of operation, since at best only one ladder can take one patient if they are bedridden.

You and Hisashi stand on the roof of a building on the opposite side of the road.

“Do you sense anything?”

You focus down on the hospital itself to get a better feel of what you sense. There’s firefighters around, but the top floors are empty… except for two clear presences. They feel human, yet, they feel different.

“Thirty second floor!” you tell Hisashi, who nods and takes a flash step towards a window on that floor, smashing right through it. Crude, but effective. You do see some folks wonder a little as to why a window suddenly broke. You shrug and follow suit.

The halls with windows are lit by the evening sun, but the deeper you go, the darker it becomes. Hisashi uses kidō to hover a ball of light on his palm.

“Point the way, Koharu,” he says confidently. It looks like he intends to still be at the front, even though you’re technically guiding him.

You manage to take a few turns until you are just one turn short of the hall where you sense the two presences.

“In there,” you whisper. Hisashi nods, takes a deep breath, and jumps right in there shouting.

You calmly take the turn and find that an elderly man is pointing an intensely glowing bow and arrow at Hisashi, made of some blue energy. Behind him is a girl, maybe 10 years old, hiding behind him.

“Quincy..” Hisashi grits his teeth, holding his sword on guard.

“Please, we are not your enemies, Shinigami,” the elderly man says. His technique dispels and reforms into a simple blue orb of light, much like what Hisashi has in his hand.

It doesn’t look like Hisashi is convinced to lower his own guard at all.

>Let Hisashi deal with this, he seems to know more than you about what he is.

Before the situation can escalate in any way, you decide to step in.

“Easy there, cowboy,” you tell Hisashi as you put your hand on his zanpakutō.

“They’re clearly not the enemy, nor are we theirs.”

Hisashi takes a deep breath and finally lowers his sword. The elderly man relaxes, stroking his beard for a moment. Now that nobody’s at anyone’s throat, the grey-haired man looks like quite a gentle person.

“My name is Ishida Sōken,” he gives you a polite bow, “I do think we’re here for the same reasons.”

“I’m Tamaki Koharu,” you introduce yourself with a faint smile, hoping to ease the tension. You wait for Hisashi to do the same, and when he doesn’t say anything, you elbow him in his ribs.

“Takenaka.. Hisashi,” he introduces while recovering from your subtle signal.

“We’re pleased to meet you, even with these odd… circumstances.”

Your eyes move towards the little girl standing behind him, peeking over his back at you and Hisashi with some fear in her eyes. Sōken notices this and puts a hand on her shoulder, beckoning to come further.

“I found her in one of the wards hiding,” he explains, sadness creeping to his eyes, “and now it’s clear that she can also see spirits,” he continues, noticing the girl clearly seeing Hisashi.

You take a few steps closer and bow a little to take a closer look at the shy girl, focusing your sixth sense on her. She’s definitely human, as in not dead, but you can also sense traces of hollow reiatsu from her.

You decide to leave the girl be for now. Especially when you go through a few scenarios in your head, all of which are kind of bleak. Instead, you decide to focus on old man Ishida. Despite being relaxed, he still feels somehow uneasy.

“Ishida-san, what is it?” you ask, noticing his behavior. “You know something, don’t you?”

Hisashi comes closer beside you now, trusting your lead for now, albeit awkwardly. You have a feeling he’s confused about not being in the lead.

Sōken sighs. “You’re a very perceptive lass. You’re not a shinigami?”

You shake your head. “Just your average… err, less-than-average high schooler.”

“I see,” he nods. “My son could probably learn a thing or two from you.”

Hisashi grows impatient by each exchange. You also feel like he’s beating around the bush, but he seems to finally resign.

“There were three hollows here,” he begins. “One of them was clearly the leader, and a surprisingly smart one too.”

“By the records of the officials downstairs, both the link to the power grid and the emergency power generator were as if dissolved in acid.”

“So it’s safe to assume one of the hollows has such powers,” Hisashi chimes in.

Sōken nods. “When I got to them and started firing my arrows, they retreated just before they got their hands on the girl.”

Three hollows… that’s a new one, at least for you. The ones before have always been loners. Well, except for Urahara’s hollow pit, but that doesn’t count.

You don’t sense any hollow presence in the hospital though. Except for that faint reiatsu from the girl. Then there’s Sōken who still looks troubled, but you doubt you’ll get anything else from him.

Still, it feels like you’re missing a piece of the puzzle.

You lower yourself by bending your knees and look at the girl.

“Hey there. What’s your name?” you ask. She doesn’t respond and keeps looking at you, glancing from time to time at Hisashi or Sōken.

Strange, is she mute? No, you don’t think so. She’s extremely nervous, and if the hollow reiatsu you sensed gives you any idea, she might be especially wary of the two veteran fighters.

“Ishida-san, could I take her to the side and talk privately for a moment?”

Sōken blinks, contemplating on the idea, but then deciding that you’re trustworthy enough. Hisashi on the other hand has other ideas.

“You can’t be serious, Koharu,” he says.

“What?”

“We’re so not splitting up. There’s never been a single time that has gone well, ever.”

“Jeez, I’m not going to the other side of the building you idiot, just a bit more to the side. You’ll be able to see us the whole time. Look, I even figured out your light trick.”

You do your best to channel your reiryoku into your palm, and produce a petty, very small ball of green light, slightly weaker than a candle.

Hisashi is about to giggle and say something snarky about the size, but your glare of daggers keeps his mouth shut.

“Now, be a respectable shinigami, and keep our friend some good company. And no fighting.”

Hisashi gives up, shrugging, and beckons the old man to come with him to the other end of the corridor.

Content, you turn back to the girl.

“Now then, there’s nothing to be scared of.”

“Tomoe,” the girl says.

“Excuse me?” you’re caught off guard. She just points at herself, still keeping her eyes locked onto you.

“Well Tomoe-chan, it’s nice to meet you. I want to ask you some things, if that’s okay?”

The girl nods lightly.

“Why were you here? When the lights went out?”

“I was visiting my Ma.”

Your heart sinks a little bit. There’s a very high chance that her mother’s dead in that case.

“Well you’re safe now, Tomoe-chan. Those two over there?” you say as you point towards Hisashi and Sōken who seem to be talking about something.

“They’re strong. They can protect us.”

The girl shakes her head.

“What is it? You don’t think so?” you ask cautiously.

“They are not after me,” she says ominously.

You swallow hard before asking the obvious follow-up question.

“Who are they after then?”

Tomoe points at you.

You swallow hard. They are after you? You do your best to remain calm and suppress the growing anxiety within you.

“Tomoe-chan… what do you mean by them?”

The girl looks down at your feet, trying to find the words.

“White faces,” she eventually says. “One with a long nose.”

Oh.

Oh shit.

Was this all a setup? You don’t know, but it would make sense that the hollows left when old man Ishida came. He’s clearly powerful, but he’s not who they want. And if there’s three of them, it would be three to three right now.

But this whole idea that the hollow of Kinji’s soul has come back and is targeting you disturbs you greatly.

“Did they do anything to you?” you ask.

Tomoe nods. “My shoulder,” she says, looking at it. There’s a small hole in her clothes, and a small red puncture wound which seems to have healed.

This just raises more questions. Didn’t hollows ignore living humans? Why would a hollow not finish the deed?

You do have a few options now though, now that you have some more information.

>Leave the group, try to lure the hollows out alone.
>Return to Hisashi and Sōken. Tell what’s the deal.
>Tell Hisashi to deal with the soul burials, take Tomoe to Urahara’s shop.

That is what one gets when you play around and gloat instead of finishing our enemies off and really a pedo? Of all things we could spare that was the worst choice he could even be a acceptable target for mind control in my books
>>
>>4461134
True, I only spared so he would get killed by a shinigami though. Remember what happened to the hollw attached to that parrot Chad protected?
Spirits who were evil in life get sent to hell by zanpaktu while us killing him would "merely" destroy him. That said I'm not opposed to mind controlling him either
>>
>>4461134
Eh, it makes for an ok character arc where the MC gets a bit harsher against his enemies after learning from the mistake of sparing one.

“Tomoe-chan, let’s go to the others. Don’t worry, they’re nice people.”

You lead the girl back to Hisashi and Sōken, who fortunately seem to be having a rather intellectual discussion. From what you overhear, Sōken is explaining to him some kind of response system to hollows. Something about Quincy being the first line of defense for humans until the shinigami arrive to dispose of hollows and ‘return them to the cycle.’

“I’ll be honest, I have my doubts, but I do think it’s a logical idea,” he says, scratching the back of his head. “But it’ll take a lot to convince others, especially the Central 46..”

You interrupt their conversation at this point to explain to them the things you’ve learnt.

“So it’s that bastard again that almost killed you?” Hisashi asks, looking a little angry.

You nod, recalling the events of that night. Had you known he’d do this and kill this many humans for souls, you have no doubt you’d have killed him.

“I’ll definitely need to report this,” Hisashi continues, “we should keep track of this hollow.”

Sōken strokes his beard. “Hollows don’t usually interact with the living,” he muses, “only those that have been quite wicked in life do.”

Hisashi nods. “And that usually means one thing.”

“Hell.”

You have even more questions now. Hell? For real?

Just how many realms are there in the end?

“You should send the souls onwards,” Sōken closes his eyes. “I’ll at least stay until power is returned. If the hollows fled when I came, maybe they’ll stay away as well.”

That leaves you and the girl.

>Agree, help out Hisashi and leave Tomoe-chan with Sōken.
>Agree, leave with Tomoe-chan. (Where?)
>Disagree, propose another plan. (Write-in)

If the hollows are after us then it's best if we separate from the girl before the sicko decides to use her against us. make our self a big juicy target. Only problem is if they strike right when Hisashi is sending a soul away that's when we should be on highest alert.

“I’ll come with you Hisashi,” you say. “Somebody has to find the souls anyway.”

Hisashi’s eyebrow twitches and he’s about to retort in some way, but you ignore him and lower yourself again to face the little girl.

“Tomoe-chan, I want you to stay with Ishida-san here. You’ll be safe with him, okay?”

The girl nods silently.

With that, you and Hisashi separate from old man Ishida and little Tomoe, waving both of them goodbye.

While doing the some-what mundane task, you decide to use it to get some more information out of Hisashi.

“You called him Quincy,” you recall, “What’s that?”

“How to put it neatly,” he begins, sighing. Looks like it’s a can of worms for the shinigami.

“They’re a tribe of spiritually aware humans who like shinigami, fight hollows.”

“That doesn’t sound bad.”

“If it were that simple, things could be looking quite different,” Hisashi sighs.

“Our zanpakutō, they’re called soul-cutters for a reason. Be it konsō for plusses or cutting hollows, the zanpakutō purifies and purges the soul so that they may undergo the cycle of reincarnation. Those souls that can’t be purified instead end up in Hell. To become purified or to disappear.”

“The cycle of reincarnation is important. Souls of beings like humans are very complex. So complex in fact, that creating new ones is quite hard and usually develops through the souls of lesser beings. Destroying a soul is very difficult too, but also harms the cycle.”

“And the Quincy, they do precisely that. The hollows they kill with their reishi, their souls are lost forever.”

“Less souls in the cycle means the balance of the world is disrupted. You’ve probably already seen the effect it has on your world: Stillbirth.”

You let the whole thing sink in as Hisashi sends another soul off to Soul Society.

“We tried to negotiate with them, to make them stop, but they did not listen.”

“And that meant a bloody war. And even after the war ended, it didn’t mean the losing side would be content with just stopping.”

>That old man didn’t seem uncooperative though. Can’t anything be done?

“What happens if I kill a hollow?” you ask, “I don’t have a fancy sword like you.”

“You do the same thing, just not as cleanly. Hakuda literally means ‘White Hits.’ You can guess what the white part refers to.”

This just makes you confused.

“What’s special about the zanpakutō then?”

“The zanpakutō specifically sends the soul to the correct destination. Any other means will destroy the spiritual body, yes, but the entity of a soul itself, the very core, will drift away from this world and end up somewhere.”

“Pluses that naturally pass on dirft to Soul Society. Hollows not killed by zanpakutō on the other hand seem to drift elsewhere, though that’s hard to prove.”

“Elsewhere? Like Hueco Mundo?” you ask. Hisashi nods.

“Possibly.”

“This world, Soul Society, Hueco Mundo, now Hell… just how many of these realms are there?”

“Two more, actually. There’s the Beast Realm for the souls of animals, and the Royal Realm, home to the Soul King.”

You tilt your head. “The what now?”

Hisashi sighs, beginning to get frustrated. “The Soul King. The lynchpin of the world, the force that drives the cycle of reincarnation, yadda yadda, I’M NOT A WALKING ENCYCLOPEDIA, OKAY?”

You put your hands into the air. “Sheesh, I’m just curious about it all, no need to get all angry.”

“So the buddhists got it right, huh?” you muse to yourself. Then, the building lights came back on. It seems the people downstairs managed to route in power finally. As it happens, you’ve pretty much dealt with the lingering spirits.

“Well, job’s done. Let’s go,” Hisashi says.

Sōken leaves with Tomoe posing as guests getting stranded in the building, while you and Hisashi just use a window and combine it with a shunpo. You’re left to wonder if you’ll ever see the old geezer or Tomoe-chan again.

Meanwhile at Urahara’s shop, Akane’s just chatting with Jun as you return to get your body. Apparently she stopped with training an hour or so ago and was waiting to escort you back home. Before leaving the shop with her, Akane gives Jun a rather forceful hug. It looked rather hilarious as Jun squirmed in her arms doing his best to not be embarrassed as hell.

While on the tram, you tell Akane what had happened.

“Shit,” she curses, “So that creepy principal is now after you?”

“Well, I don’t exactly know for sure,” you correct her, “but it’s safe to assume. He lost to me, and the girl clearly met him. There’s no reason for me to doubt her.”

“Well, if he does come for you, he’ll have to get through me!” Akane says, taking you into a headlock. You struggle out of it and sigh with a smile.

“Thanks Akane, but if anything happens, just keep yourself safe, okay?”

Akane parts ways with you once you reach your apartment and leaves you, wishing you a good night. Given that you were out of your body for hours, you grab an evening snack, then head for the bed.

You sense Hisashi sitting on your roof, standing guard. Before his presence made you feel like a pervert was peeping on you, but now… now it feels nice having someone watching your back.

And so you drift to sleep.

I’ll officially end Thread 2b here. I want to update the character sheet and social links at this point, so you can benefit from the stat increases.

Next session will be in this thread again (Part 2c) this Saturday. Though check twitter just in case, since if my heart condition worsens, I might have to postpone it.

Next time will also be very eventful and this time I promise, you’ll get to see Hisashi’s shikai. Was supposed to be this session, but things fucked up for me.

I suspected as much though knowing which is the mode is difficult Miko Mode (the sense thing) seems fitting to be good with Magic as the main trouble of those techniques is to be able to focus both in the chant and in the energies used
>but
So can be Nerve Weaver (Mind Control spider power) hoho (Reaper Binding magic) would work immensely well if we see how it seems to work
>your gaze is fixated on the hollow, like the web of a spider keeping him in place as he struggles to break free of it.
Twice we saw how it needed tamaki to touch his target or at least cover them in the Spider Reiatsu (Purple Reiatsu) maybe we could figure out how to tinge the power on the spells too which would fix the range limitations
But before that we need more data about how those powers work first
I mean for all i know Miko Mode can act as a pseudo ultra instinct and with Tamaki being a living person his sharp senses will make his soul growth much faster it might even be a mechanic of the form based in its description
>Reach for the calm river, beckoning it to become a torrent of power.
Maybe Miko mode is a form that by abstaining of physical senses it can heighten how much the soul can influence the body and speed up his soul's adaptation to stronger enemies ala a reverse kenpachi
>In simple words Miko Mode might is To Be Like Water
>Makin it's way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend. Bruce 'The Badass' Lee
I speak of what
I suspect about Nerve Weaver later but for a sneak peek
>look back on what we did with the hollow in the pit
>Does that not seem kinda Empath/Telepath to you?
>Or how it is kinda interesting on how we spoke with Urahara on the possibility of hollows purifying themselves or letting or something like that
>I smell foreshadowing

You are Tamaki Koharu and the morning comes with a sunrise well after you’re already awake. The alarm rings shortly after, which you quickly stop and rise up to sit on your bed.

You’re nervous.

Yesterday’s case was scary in its own merit, but it definitely left you with some anxiety, especially because of that girl Tomoe. If she spoke the truth, then it means that the hollow, formerly known as Principal Matsubara Kinji, is targeting you. And not just alone, but with two other hollows no less. You had a chance to kill him for good at the school.

You didn’t. And now, you’re left to face the consequences. Rationally you know that the hollows were responsible for the tragedy at the hospital, but you still feel like had you chosen to finish off Kinji, it could’ve been avoided.

Akane knocks on your door, ready to go with you to school just as you pack your bag and finish a slice of toast. Well, best not to wallow in worries and just go.

She keeps you quite good company and cheers you up a bit with her antics and enthusiasm about slowly but surely getting spiritually stronger. She’s gotten the hang of being outside of her body, but not much past that. It doesn’t help that she needs outside help to get out of her physical body. Maybe it’ll come with time.

You are joined by Chie-chan at the school and you proceed to another normal day at school.

That is, until your sixth sense alarms you during the kanji class: Just above the school, three new spiritual signals appear.

Three hollows.

One of them very familiar.

>Excuse yourself and go to the nurse’s office, separate your soul there.

You quickly raise your hand and get the teacher’s attention, stating that you’re not feeling well. On your way out of the door, you glance at Akane and give her a serious look and a nod, which you think she understands correctly. If things get messy, you sincerely hope she makes sure she’s safe.

The nurse’s office isn’t that far away, but you do end up running, as you feel the three hollows finally coming through whatever portal they used to get here. You can’t help but feel that just by being at the school, you’re endangering everyone.

As soon as you see the nurse, you separate your soul, letting your physical body fall into her arms. You’ve done this quite a few times already, whenever you felt bored of school and wanted to explore instead.

Unfortunately, you only managed to take a few steps in the hallway before something hit the school building, causing structural damage. Screams of panic reverb throughout the school and no doubt somebody got hurt by that.

You decide to just jump out of a window, and using some flash steps you end up on the roof. The three hollows float up in the sky above the school, their attention now on you. Looking to your side, you see the damage they’ve caused: The roof has a hole of about two meters in diameter, chunks still falling in. Whatever they threw there was tough enough to destroy actually physical, durable material.

Shit.

“There you are!” a familiar, distorted voice rings out from the sky.

Kinji, the former principal turned hollow has a deformed, muscular but lean dark-blue colored body, with his face covered by a white mosquito-shaped mask, with a long protruded nose with which he stabbed you last time.

Two other hollows stand on his both sides: One is clearly some sort of monstrous frog or toad, his face also covered by a white porcelain-like mask with a single horn coming from his forehead like that of traditional oni.

The other one is weirder to describe: It looks like a hunched human or ape, its skin covered by a rocky-texture. Unlike the two other hollows, its mask starts from underneath its skin, like a nail, to cover its face. There’s no holes for his eyes either.

“If it isn’t the little missy herself,” Kinji laughs like a maniac, like somebody who’s been off drugs for months and has finally gotten a new dose.

“Oh how much I’ve waited for this! Now, be a good girl and let me enjoy this to the FULLEST!”

You only have a few moments to think while the head asshole is monologuing to figure out what to do. Shit’s looking bad though. You had trouble one on one with him before, but against three hollows? With your school right behind you? Running it is-

“And don’t think about running, or else the school and all of your precious friends, will be DEAD!”

Fuck.

You grit your teeth and prepare for the worst. One thing’s for sure, you can’t stay on the roof, otherwise the school will sustain even more damage. No doubt they’ve already begun to evacuate. Hopefully.

“Go get her you shitheads!” Kinji shouts to his two underlings, who charge at you. You send yourself soaring towards the sky with a flash step, hoping that whatever they send towards you won’t hit the school. Unfortunately, they had already sent something towards your previous location: A huge rock and poison-green mucus.

The school took another hit, shaking the whole building, and the mucus splattered over the roof, beginning to corrode even more of it.

Both hollows use ranged attacks, which unfortunately, you don’t have.

“Stop destroying the school you bastards!” you shout at them, taking flash steps left and right and forming those reishi-platforms that you’ve seen Hisashi use now many times. Rocks and mucus fly past you in tandem, sometimes even obliterating each other instead of hitting you.

“Damn it, Kinji! It’s your own school! Don’t you have any pride left?!” you scream at Kinji, who’s so far content with just staying at a distance and watching you struggle.

“Pride?” he asks and begins to laugh like a total maniac. “For that plot of shit? No, MY school is long DEAD! I know what I’ll do after I’m through you, I’ll hunt each and every last person who’s attending that school, and after that everyone who ever attended it! And I’ll savor drinking their blood!”

Shit, this isn’t good. He’s completely lost it.

“But I know none of that will be as pleasurable as you! I don’t know why, but I just CAN’T get you out of my head! Every moment, awake or not, I see your cute little face! And finally I can CLAIM IT!”

Before you give the mosquito hollow a chance to join in, you tap into the deep emotions you feel right now.

Fear of dying. Fear of losing your friends. Desperation, frustration of your own weakness.

The familiar black void opens up to you once more, and you channel these primal emotions outwards, and let out a scream, like that of a banshee.

The toad and basalt hollows stop in place, and you intend to capitalize on that moment of weakness for them. With a series of quick shunpo, you deliver an axe-kick and some extra to the toad’s, sending him flying downwards into the outdoor sports area of the school. You don’t make it quite quickly enough to the basalt hollow, since he manages to shield itself a little from your hakuda-infused kicks. Nonetheless, you send it reeling towards the field as well.

Kinji, however, seems to be ecstatic, if you only could see him from behind the mask that is in a creepy permanently wide grin.

“Amazing… this feeling… it’s wonderful!” he shouts, and launches himself at you.

And he’s damn fast, faster than he was in your last fight.

If you didn’t have shunpo, you’d be dead already.

Kinji unleashes a barrage of punches, kicks and even occasional nose-stabs at you. You manage to dodge most of them, and those that you can’t, you divert to your arms or legs, avoiding any vital areas. You know that you can’t keep up like this though, the exhaustion will kick in much sooner for you than for the hollow. Plus, you can already sense the two other hollows rushing back towards you.

“What’s wrong? Eheheh! Can’t keep up?” Kinji taunts.

You don’t answer, but instead position yourself with your back towards the two incoming hollows. They definitely take the bait and produce their respective projectiles, throwing them at you. Before they manage to connect, you flash step towards the toad and rock hollow, intent on focusing on them next, while the projectiles hit Kinji, and in turn, send him flying off while shouting something.

“Shit!” the toad hollow shouts, clearly unnerved by the fact that they hit their leader. It doesn’t look like they have too good of a relationship with him. Nonetheless, they begin their assault on you.

This time you don’t spend time just in the middle of their rock and mucus projectiles, and instead take the fight to them. To their credit, they anticipated it, probably due to the fact that you haven’t used any attacks that have a longer reach than your limbs.

A few times you manage to get them to hit each other, but unfortunately you also take some hits from the rocks, definitely breaking something in you; as well as the mucus which first burns your skin and then hardens to it like a glue.

You’re also pretty sure that if you try to get it off with your hand, it’ll just stick to it, restricting one of your limbs.

They don’t give you much time to catch your breath either, and you feel the exhaustion creeping in.

Then there’s also Kinji who’s flying at you at a speed that you don’t think you’ll be able to dodge without getting hit by his hollow lackeys.

This isn’t looking good.

“Bakudō #4. Hainawa!”

A crackling yellow energy rope appears and binds Kinji before his nose impales you from your back, and the two other hollows are cut with a fierce slash, sending them flying off once more. Then Kinji is punched towards the other two hollows as well with great power.

Hisashi grits his teeth, not looking away from the direction of the hollows, standing in the air in front of you.

“Are you hurt?”

“Took you long enough…” you cough up some blood.

“Sorry. I was ambushed by another hollow, but now I’m here.”

Blood sticks to Hisashi’s zanpakutō, and it looks almost as if the sword is slowly “drinking” the blood, as none drips off of it.

“Hisashi,” you begin, doing your best to not cough much.

“Don’t exert yourself Koharu, leave this to me.”

“But-”

“I’m the shinigami, it’s my task. And you’re hurt.”

That’s it, you can’t take this kind of talk. You draw energy from some mysterious source, at least enough to hit Hisashi on his head.

“OW! Hey, what the hell?!”

“We’re in this together, dumbass! Now let’s think how to fight together!”

Hisashi sighs, but ultimately relents.

“I need to draw blood. Then I can beat them easily.”

“So you need a decoy,” you nod, although nervously. This meant you’d be at the front of danger.

“Can you protect me?” You ask Hisashi.

He gives you a confident grin.

“Who do you think I am?”

With odds evened out a little bit, you and Hisashi charge towards Kinji and his two underlings, who are also charging towards you. The two forces clash and the charge turns into a brawl with your and Hisashi’s back against each other, keeping each other’s backs safe for the time being as you search for openings.

Just as the hollows are in the general same direction, you cannonball shunpo into them, reinforcing your body with reiatsu, making your whole body a weapon. Kinji manages just in time to draw the two hollows in front of him, having them take the most damage. Then, Hisashi got to work.

He leaps right in front of the grouped bunch of hollows and begins dealing cuts on them. Being hollows, their wounds seal up very quickly, but it doesn’t seem to bother Hisashi, no, instead he seems to act more and more feral, like a hungry beast that has smelled and tasted blood. You sense his reiatsu steadily creeping and rising to a level that you haven’t sensed before.

“Damn it all, you fucking useless pieces of shit,” Kinji shouts in frustration as he grabs the two hollows and retreats away, closer to the school.

“Looks like I have to do everything myself, again!”

Kinji impales his nose into the exhausted toad hollow, who very quickly shrivels into almost nothing, and at last its mask crumbles apart.

You watch in horror as he does the same with the second hollow.

“Is he…” you begin.

“Eating hollows?” Hisashi finishes the thought, breathing heavily.

“Shit!” he says, as both of you suddenly feel Kinji’s reiatsu spike.

His body suddenly expands into a deformed ball, and then violently explodes.

In the wake of the explosion lies a small crater in the school field, as well as a gargantuan black body with the mask that used to be on Kinji. Its reiatsu is incredible, the highest that you’ve ever felt.

Your body is trembling, your mind screaming from the terror you feel while looking at this monster.

“Menos.. Grande..” Hisashi says, before pointing his sword at the gigantic hollow.

“Koharu… please stay back.”

“Bathe in blood, Ryōkenjin!”

Hisashi’s reiatsu spikes upwards once more, a blood-red aura surrounding him now. Instead of a katana, he is now wielding a kanabo with both of his hands: a large club/bat with lots of spikes at the end, and a large circular part at the other end.

“You’re going to pay for everything, asshole,” Hisashi shouts, and with an incredible flash step closes the distance to the Menos. You don’t know if it’s still the same Kinji, but the monster raises its hand to block Hisashi’s attack. As the kanabo connects to its arm, it has enough force behind it to spin the hollow once around.

Knowing full well that you can’t do much here, you hasten towards the badly-shaped school and help remove debris from any victim. To them it looks like a miracle happens, but you keep on going. To your fears, Akane is still inside, although only lightly harmed. She’s helping others evacuate.

“Akane! You need to get out of here!” you shout at her. “The building will collapse any minute!”

“No! What about your own body, you idiot?! I won’t let you die damn it! I haven’t found Chie either yet!”

Shit, you completely forgot about your physical body. You also do sense that Chie is still inside the building, possibly stuck somewhere.

“Shit, Chie-chan comes first!” you determine, and close your eyes for a moment, focusing on your sixth sense like you did when you first went looking for Kinji. Opening your eyes, you see floating in front of you a bunch of white ribbons once more. Among them is Hisashi’s red one and what you assume Kinji’s black one.

But now comes the tough one of figuring out which of these many white ribbons is Chie-chan’s…

You focus and focus, and finally grab one, completely sure that it belongs to your other best friend. Had you not learned this technique back then with Akane and Chie, maybe you wouldn’t have done it.

“I found her! Let’s go!” you tell Akane, and the two of you sprint through corridors and rubble.

With reiraku guiding you, you manage to find Chie-chan. Unfortunately your fears come true, as you see Chie trapped from knees down underneath rubble.

“Akane, I’ll push the rubble, you take Chie-chan,” you say to Akane, who nods.

With a swift and careful hakuda kick, you push the broken piece of wall off of Chie, and proceed to break it further, with its pieces flying away from you. Akane softly grabs the sobbing Chie-chan, picking her up.

It’s at this point that your sixth sense alerts you that something massive is being conjured up in the battle between Hisashi and the gargantuan hollow.

“Akane, we have to get out, fast!”

“Idiot, what about your body?!”

“There’s no time for that, if we don’t go we’ll all die!”

With that, you search for a way out of the building.

>Meanwhile…

Hisashi pummeled the menos with his zanpakutō, drawing and absorbing a lot of blood, which in turn made him more and more bloodthirster.

He wants to destroy this hollow, which Soul Society has now codenamed “Blood Embezzler.” At first Hisashi didn’t think a hollow, less than a week old would deserve a file, but seeing it transformed into a menos now proves his folly.

And this shithead hurt Koharu.

“So you’re supposed to be full of blood, huh? That’s very good for me,” Hisashi laughs, swinging his kanabo, drenched in blood, at Kinji. With every drop of blood it gave him more strength, more energy, and put him in an even more intense frenzy.

The menos-class hollow, Kinji, had other plans however.

With his newfound body and strength, he charges a great amount of reiryoku at his mouth, forming a shining red orb of pure destructive energy.

“Shit..!” Hisashi says, realizing too late just what is behind him. He extends his arm and begins to chant an incantation.

“This better work..!”

The menos releases the orb of destruction into a ray, a technique classified as ‘cero’ by Soul Society. Hisashi’s barrier manages to just spring forth in time to keep him somewhat safe and weather the cero down. It is not enough, however, and the remaining arcs of the cero hit the school, the explosion finally forcing the whole building to crumble.

You and Akane, carrying Chie, manage to get out of the building just in time when the weird energy you felt was released. Hisashi’s barrier managed to wear off over half of the firepower, but in the end it crumbled and sent Hisashi along with the rest of the destructive energy towards the school.

“DAMN YOU!” the hollow’s reverberating, twisted scream echoes. The sky behind it begins to twist and tear itself apart like fabric, with him retreating into it and trying to pull the rift close like one would close the curtains in front of a window.

“I’LL GET YOU YET, YOU WITCH!”

Hisashi jumps out of the rubble, bloodied and clearly worn out, yet he’s ready for round two by pure willpower.

“Get back here!” he shouts as he takes a flash step towards the menos, who’s halfway through the void. Hisashi manages to get one hit in, sending the hollow flying into the black void known as the garganta. Then, the fabric of space reconnects once more.

The sirens of ambulances and fire trucks fill your ears as they do their best to come help. Looking around, you see that quite many fortunately managed to evacuate, but your senses tell you that many are still in the rubble. Either unconscious… or dead.

Hisashi seals his zanpakutō, turning to look at the crowd of innocent people, and you.

You return the gaze, and sigh.

What a mess you’ve ended up in.

It is evening, and you are in the hospital, still in your spiritual body. Chie-chan is fortunately safe and sound, with injuries that will heal over time. You however… weren’t so lucky.

You are standing in one of the patient rooms, staring at your crippled physical body. Your whole left side of the body was almost flattened, and broken everywhere. Your body is hooked to a machine which keeps you alive, but you’re in what the doctor’s describe as a coma. Hisashi is standing next to you, keeping you company and support.

“This…” you try to think of what to say, with a tornado of emotions inside of you.

Hisashi just nods, closing his eyes.

Tears begin to flow from your eyes as the emotions you’ve so far brushed off to the side for Akane and Chie resurface.

You never liked your physical body, especially because of how frail it was. But now that you’re standing beside a half-corpse, you can’t help but feel sad. As more tears come, you quietly sob.

Hisashi puts his hand on your shoulder, doing his awkward best to give you support.

Oh, I meant to ask about this earlier but when he lived at the shrine what kinds of things did Koharu learn about spirits? The way Menos-Kinji called Koharu a witch got me thinking that researching or brushing up on oriental witchcraft could help in figuring out how his powers work. Controlling spirits and all that. Maybe look up other forms of occult knowledge too.

The shrine caretakers generally kept Koharu sheltered. Mostly he was taught about shinto stuff and occasional yokai stories, and to be respectful of spirits.
That said, it might not be a bad idea to revisit the shrine in Nara. You may be onto something.

“I.. I don’t want to die,” you finally say, voicing the biggest concern on your mind.

“I may have never really liked my body, but… it’s still me, you know.”

Hisashi listens, keeping his arm on your shoulder.

“It’s okay to feel like this,” he tries to console you.

“Urahara-san… talked about this Gigai thing. Maybe it can, you know, help?”

Hisashi ponders in silence, which slightly worries you for some reason.

"Talking with him is probably for the best," he says in the end. "Just keep in mind that clinging onto false hope can also lead to devastating results."

"W-What's that supposed to mean?"

Hisashi sighs. "Forget I said anything, it's probably not the right time. Is there.. anything I can do?"

"..Hold me," you say, letting Hisashi comfort you for a moment in silence, except for the beeping signifying the pulse of your physical body.

Some few hours later, you leave Akane to keep Chie-chan company. You don’t know yet how to face them nor what to tell them beyond what the doctors probably explained to them. With Hisashi, you make your way to Urahara’s shop, letting yourselves in. To your surprise, the lights are still on at this late hour and Urahara is actually back.

Even more to your surprise, he doesn’t greet you with any goofy remark.

Tessai once again prepares tea and some snacks for the group, and you all sit around a low table, on comfortable pillows. Jun is also there, though he looks like he’s ready to hit the bed.

Both you and Hisashi take turns explaining what has happened as well as the predicament you find yourself in. For a moment, you all sit in silence, just drinking tea.

“First Naruki City, now this…” Urahara mumbles. “Hard to believe it to be mere coincidence.”

“What?” you ask, confused.

“Strange hollow activity, and equally strange results,” he cryptically explains, without really explaining anything.

“But to give you some answers, Koharu-chan, unfortunately I can’t fix problems of physical nature, not without causing bigger ones. I could however provide you with a gigai, one that would almost behave like it were the real thing.”

“But I’ve warned you before already. The longer you spend outside your actual body, the harder it’ll be to return to it.” Kisuke lowers his head, his hat overshadowing his eyes.

“Live enough with the gigai, and you might not even want to return.”

You gulp.

“Then there’s also the case of the shinigami,” he continues, shifting his gaze to Hisashi, who is keeping his arms crossed and eyes closed.

“Koharu-san,” he says, unusually formal now, “we are required by law, to find lingering souls and help them pass to the afterlife.”

“Just with the ability to separate your soul, and with no chain of fate, you’ve been walking a blurred line for us. And now with this… I think you understand where I’m getting at.”

He slowly opens his eyes to look at you. You see that he’s incredibly conflicted right now. The idea that he could be forced to send you to that Soul Society place though makes you quite nervous.

“Regardless of what anyone thinks or wants to decide,” Kisuke says before anyone else, “you should mull it over a good night’s rest. Tessai will prepare a bedroll for you, Koharu-chan. You’ll be out patrolling, Hisashi-kun, right?”

He nods.

As everyone prepares for bed after Hisashi takes his leave, you are confronted by Urahara, who asks you to come sit with him in a separate room with a fireplace.

“Koharu-kun,” he begins, taking his hat off and putting it on a shelf. For once you get to actually see his head properly, without most of his hair hidden or his eyes overshadowed.

“As much as I feel bad about this, I do want to talk to you about something… as well as ask you for a favor.”

“A.. favor?” you ask. Kisuke nods.

“First, as much as I’d like to continue your training, I won’t be able to provide it to you anymore. I have a lot of travelling and investigation to do.”

“However, the Soul Society does have the Shin'ō Academy. The place in the afterlife where ordinary souls with potential may become shinigami.”

“But I told you, I don’t wan-” you protest, but Kisuke cuts you off.

“I’m telling you about the possibilities, Koharu-kun. As I said, were you to go there, you would be no doubt trained well in all fields, and even get a zanpakutō, which may very well give you a proper way to channel your powers.”

“But the most important part, I’ve no doubt you’d be quickly recruited into the Gotei 13, to become a shinigami just like Hisashi-kun.”

Kisuke pauses for a moment, looking at the gentle fire in the fireplace.

“I used to be the Captain of the 12th Division,” he finally continues, the fire flickering in his eyes as a reflection.

“Until I was betrayed and framed by somebody who to this day still remains in the Gotei 13, conspiring against everyone there.”

“H-Hold on Kisuke-sensei,” you shake your head. “This is too much. Me? Shinigami? Gotei 13? A conspiracy?”

“Then let me cut to the chase then, Koharu-kun.”

“I’d like to ask you to join the Gotei 13, infiltrate it, and become my eyes and ears there. The person behind the conspiracy will no doubt find you and try to recruit you. I want you to let him do that.”

Your jaw drops at this. It doesn’t help that it’s late and you’re still in a slight shock from today’s events.

That, and you still have questions before you can even give him an answer.

“Why me?” you ask the big question right away. “We’ve only known for a week only at best too.”

“That is true. But I do sense that you are a genuine and a trustworthy person. But there’s also something else… namely your powers, Koharu-kun.”

“What do you mean?”

“The traitor is very interested in hollow powers, especially if it’s possible to attain them without becoming a hollow. Now, if my own theories about your powers are correct, he will no doubt become interested in you.”

You gulp. “That’s why you said he’d find me?”

Kisuke nods.

You furrow your brows. “But if you know who the traitor is, why not expose them?”

“I tried,” Kisuke simply states. “But the traitor… he is very cunning. And he definitely did me one over that time a hundred years ago. Ever since then, I’ve made sure to take precautions.”

A hundred years? Just how old is this guy?

“But there’s also another problem. I still do not know what are the traitor’s goals, nor how extensive the conspiracy is. I also can’t tell you, so that you won’t unconsciously behave differently than normal.”

What is even normal at this point…

“How would I distinguish this traitor then?”

Kisuke shakes his head. “When the time comes, you’ll know.”

“My life has always been, and still is, in this world,” you state. “Why should I care about the shinigami, the Gotei 13?”

“You shouldn’t. There may come a time during this when you’ll have to work against the Gotei 13, betray, even kill, for the sake of the eventual greater good of the world.”

You take a few deep breaths, taking in the ramifications of what he just said.

“What of my body here? If I go to.. Soul Society I mean?”

“Since you are comatose, you will most likely be kept alive, although artificially. However, if I were you… I’d let hope rest.”

“Besides, now that I’ve been asked multiple times, I’ll do my best to create a way to actually make physical gigais.”

You watch the fire for a few minutes, mulling over these answers. Whether this is worth leaving your life here in the ‘real’ world. On the other hand, this is a chance to really do something that matters.

“And if I refuse?” you ask.

Kisuke shrugs. “Then I’ll have to fall back on less plausible plans. Not great, but I won’t stop until everything is rectified.”

“Assuming I decide to go, when would I leave? There are a few things that I’d still like to do.”

Kisuke waves his hand. “There’s no timeframe. I only need your answer before I leave. How and when you get to Soul Society is all up to you. I recommend the traditional way: soul burial. Unlike natural drifting, it’ll keep you and your memories intact.”

You sit with Kisuke for five minutes in silence, watching the fire die out, only red-hot embers remaining, faintly illuminating the room.

“If you choose to do this, you must tell no one,” Kisuke warns.

“Not even Hisashi-kun.”

“Now, what is your decision, Koharu-kun?”

This sounds fine; we do have a few things to do first. The shrine, saying our goodbyes, etc.

The thing is, even though Soul Society is a dog-eat-dog ghetto, Koharu's "living" on borrowed time and is stuck going there sooner or later. It's not like hopping back inside his broken body and being stuck in a coma to avoid detection is a viable option. Even if Hisashi tries to cover for Koharu, it's only a matter of time until a different Shinigami comes by to forcibly konso him. Better to leave on our own terms.

“Promise me you’ll do whatever you can and beyond to keep my friends safe.”

Kisuke looks at you and nods. “As long as they don’t meddle with souls, they won’t draw the attention of hollows nor shinigami.”

“But I’ll promise. Jun is here too. He may be young, but he’s very capable, and definitely dependable.”

You take a very deep breath, and exhale very slowly.

“Alright. I’ll do it. If it means I can truly become strong and make a difference… I will go to Soul Society.”

Kisuke gives you an approving nod. “Splendid. Just keep in mind the whole time your purpose, and never reveal it to anyone.”

>...

You have difficulties falling asleep. Not only are you trying to do it without your physical body for the first time ever, but also yesterday’s events loom over your mind. Once again you’re faced with some guilt, as you think back to the first battle you had with Kinji, where you did not kill him.

He’s hurt and destroyed everything around you to some degree. And it pains you.

Morning eventually comes and Jun comes to wake you up. You stir in the bed for a while before begrudgingly getting up.

Kisuke and Tessai apparently left earlier already, and Hisashi had just gotten into the shop. You and Hisashi sit at the low table while Jun brings breakfast for all three of you.

Kisuke was right, he is very dependable.

“Feeling any better?” Hisashi asks.

You shrug. “Not particularly. Everything’s still shit, but at least I’m still in one piece. Well, spiritually at least…”

Jun speaks up after stuffing his mouth with an onigiri. “Oh, ownew wewt you a gwigwai!”

Hisashi lightly hits Jun on his head. “Finish eating before you speak.”

“Ouch…! The owner left you a gigai, Koharu-chan. He said it’ll allow regular humans to see you with it.

Well, you could use it, but no doubt it might cause some confusion if people who know of your state see you prancing around with it.

“Hisashi,” you begin, searching for the right words. He stops eating, and looks at you.

“I’ve decided to move on, to go to Soul Society.”

Hisashi stares at you for a moment in disbelief, and then it becomes evident that he managed to silently chock on his food as his face turns blue. You punch him in the stomach, which seems to help him just enough to fix the situation.

“Shit, thanks… But wow, this is quite a change of heart compared to you yesterday. Did something happen?”

You shake your head, keeping yesterday’s conversation a secret.

“I’m not going to go right away though. I want to.. do some things first, get some closure.”

Hisashi sighs, but ultimately nods. “I suppose that’s fair.”

After getting your fill of what apparently was reishi food, you feel revitalized. Jun brings your gigai to your bedroll. That Kisuke… he had already made a gigai in your exact form either during the night, or he already had it made earlier. It sort of creeps you out.

Nevertheless, you fade into it rather easily. Instead of your school uniform, you have some normal outdoor women’s summer clothing. Jun also gives you a facemask. Hopefully with this getup, those you know won’t recognize you easily.

At the hospital you hear that Chie-chan was released, so you figure she’s probably at home. No doubt Akane is also with her, so you make your way there. It takes a bit of remembering, since you haven’t visited her more than once ever.

Knocking on the front door, it is indeed Akane who opens it and immediately goes in for a hug. You’re kind of caught off guard.

“Hey, easy there, Akane,” you tell her.

“Damn it let me have my moment,” she responds, but then releases you and lets you come in, taking off your shoes. Going further into the house, you find Chie-chan, who is in a wheelchair.

Both of her legs are in plaster casts from the knees down. Seeing this makes your heart jump.

“Look who came to visit!” Akane grins.

“K-Koharu?” Chie gasps, tears forming.

You smile. “Hey Chie-chan. I’m glad to see that you’re doing better.”

You walk to her and give her a hug.

“B-But I heard you were in a coma, the doctor’s said..”

“Technically.. I am,” you say, sighing. “This body… isn’t my real one.”

You spend some time with them, just talking and explaining a few things, like how it’s all possible. You ask whether Chie-chan’s parents are home, but she explains that they both have to work, since they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford everything. The whole operation with her legs cost them a lot. Of course her parents are devastated, but there’s not much they can do without bringing other problems to the household.

Fortunately, Akane is here helping her out.

“Akane-san, Chie-chan…” you say, stopping the other small talk you had. Your formality also catches them off guard.

“I’m actually here to say goodbye.”

Almost immediately Akane gets angry and demands what you mean.

“My body, I’ve seen it. It’s… it’s not pretty. My body has never been in a good condition physically, and now most of my left side is crushed too. I’ve made my peace and decided to let go.”

Chie-chan is already starting to cry, while Akane comes closer and grabs you by the collar.

“Oi, oi, Koharu, I think I heard you wrong, it almost sounded like you were going to give up on living…!”

You see Akane’s face, filled with fear and anger. It’s almost like she’s a mirror which honestly reflects your own emotions.

“Do you think this is easy for me?!” you respond, “It’s not like I want to leave the life I have here!”

“Then why are you giving up, damn it?! You have a body now, don’t you?! Ask Kisuke to figure something out!”

“It’s not that simple! I’m not the only one who has a say in such a thing!”

“Please stop..!” Chie-chan shouts, crying.

“Please stop… I don’t want to see m-my best friends.. fighting..”

Both you and Akane look at Chie, and Akane finally releases her grip on your clothing.

Shit, things turned sour real quick. But on one hand… you’re thankful to Akane, for fighting to keep you alive.

“Look, I understand how you feel, I really do,” you finally break the silence and bow in a sitting position. “And I’m really sorry it has come to this, but it’s the only viable choice I have.”

“W-Will we see you again?” Chie-chan asks, still sobbing. You raise your head.

“I promise. Even if it takes years, I’ll make sure we meet again.”

“I also swear I’ll hunt down that thing that caused all this,” you say, anger rising inside of you. “He’ll pay for everything, for hurting everyone.”

“That’s also why I’m going. To become a shinigami, like Hisashi.”

You spend some more time with them, drinking tea, but eventually you decide it is time to leave, also to make sure Chie-chan’s parents don’t see you. You all hug each other at the same time and let out some calmer tears now. It’s all bittersweet… but unavoidable.

It’s around 4 p.m. as you leave. There’s still some things you want to do, question is, what next.

As much as it slightly irks you, you feel like you should go pay a visit to Kasuga-taisha, the place where you were raised. That place always felt like some sort of prison for you and getting out of the to attend high school was like the light at the end of a tunnel.

Yet now, there’s something that draws you towards it.

It takes you some half an hour to get there by train. It feels a little weird, travelling among people who are completely clueless that you aren’t physically real. The gigai does a good job nonetheless to mimic a physical body. Unlike the one currently in the hospital, this one doesn’t feel restraining or frail at all.

Something you had always wished for.

Finally there, you breathe in the much more fresh air of Nara. The way to Kasuga-taisha goes through the Nara primeval forest, known for its deer. You sigh, realizing you’ll have to go by them. Since being a child, you’ve had your share of these deer. They always seemed to take an interest in you, even when you just wanted to be left alone.

You do your best to take less-favored paths just by principle, one’s that you also scouted out when you first explored the world outside your body.

Once you reach a larger park opening though, something interesting happens.

The deer all around stop what they’re doing and turn to gaze at you instead. You try to rush your way through, but instead you find yourself in the middle of a deer herd, who bow their heads to you.

Of course, this draws attention to you from the other people in the park.

“Alright, you win,” you mumble and lower yourself slightly, petting the deer.

“Sorry, I don’t have crackers this time,” you give a light chuckle.

It’s strange though… the deer of Nara never behaved like this when you were younger. Some followed you constantly, sure, but not this many.

You decide to trust your gut, and reach within yourself, to that feeling of freely flowing water, and activate Miko no Senzen, your ability to perceive only through the sixth sense while shutting off all others. Through it, the sixth sense leaks into your other senses, giving you an odd, but calm and accurate sense of your surroundings.

All life around you, you sense in various glowing colors against a dark, abstract background with some shape and form of the park. All of the deer however are in shades of green. It’s even a little scary, as their signatures feel somehow very familiar, like one would perceive a sibling.

Activating this technique makes you leak reiatsu, which it seems the deer feel, as they slowly walk backwards, giving you finally room. You use this as an opportunity to just get going. After you stop the technique, you overhear various people wondering out loud.

“Who is that?”

“What happened?”

“Is this the work of kami?”

You hasten further until you finally reach Kasuga-taisha.

The shrine complex is as you remember it: Various halls dedicated to the four kami enshrined here: Ame no koyane, Himegami, Futsunushi no mikoto, and Takemikazuchi no mikoto.

You never really cared much for the myths and legends, but you still paid respect to them, if just for the reason that the other miko did so. You go to each shrine and give a short prayer like you’ve been taught, and ring the bells.

There’s one thing however that you sense, something you weren’t aware of before: There’s some kind of invisible barrier around this whole place, which has a similar feeling to kidō.

You finally see some familiar miko tending to the place, who give you a polite bow. Returning the gesture, you head for the main housing building for them, where you’re sure you’ll find Kameko-miko, your primary caretaker after your mother died.

You pass under one of the many Tori, but before you reach the door, it opens instead, and you see her.

"Kameko-miko," you greet her, bowing.

"Koharu-miko," she greets you back, her expression as stoic as you remember it.

“What an unexpected turn of events,” she muses, “please, come in.”

She takes you to a smaller room in the building, which the miko usually use as a lounge when they’re taking a break from their duties.

The situation is a little awkward, considering you didn’t part on too good terms. She objected to the idea of you leaving for high school, but with your father’s influence, she relented.

“So, to what do I owe the pleasure?” she asks, having prepared some green tea for both of you.

You take a moment to smell the aroma of the tea, to taste it, to look around the hall, looking at all the familiar decorations. Lights were already lit, as the sun made its descent towards the horizon, bringing evening with it.

“I’ve come to learn about myself,” you state, lightly putting the cup down. “I deserve to know how exactly I came to be born.”

Kameko remains silent for a good moment, sipping her own tea.

“You already know. Your mother, Tamaki Natsuko, gave birth to you with the help of your father. Three years after your birth, her body failed her.”

“That’s all there is to it.”

Your eyebrow twitches. There’s that annoying as-a-matter-of-fact attitude of hers that you’ve always hated. The way she holds herself so far above you.

“I have a hard time believing that that is all there is to this, Kameko-miko,” you state, doing your best to match her stoic, annoying demeanor.

She sighs and closes her eyes, drinking some more tea.

“Being stubborn will not change the past. It is what it is. My family has always taken care of the Tamaki line for over a hundred generations. All of that has now come to an end, with you, the end of the chain.”

“A line of women who mysteriously only gave birth to girls, and die a few years after?” you scoff. “Kameko-miko, I am not an idiot nor unobservant.”

You take a deep breath, calming down.

“Please,” you plead, “if there is anything you can tell me that I don’t know, please tell me.”

Kameko sighs while you lower your head in a bow.

“Do you remember the legend of Kasuga-taisha?” she asks.

You raise your head, but are forced to avert your eyes as you don’t.

“It was taught for a reason, Koharu-miko. Do your best, and put it to memory this time.”

“Over a thousand and two hundred years ago, when Nara was still the first capital of Japan, it was struck by a sinister yokai. The city was plagued by spiders sent by this evil spirit and pleaded the kami for assistance.”

“So it came to be that Takemikazuchi-no-mikoto, the god of lightning and swords, descended to Kashima-taisha, and rode on the back of a white deer to the top of Mount Mikasa, to protect the city of Nara.”

“Thus came to be this shrine, to honor the lightning-god and to honor his companion kami.”

“Remember this well, Koharu-miko,” she says, opening her eyes once more, staring directly at you in an unnerving manner.

”What happened to the white deer?”
>"Was the yokai destroyed?"

You finish your tea. Something is still bothering you, but you can’t put your finger on it.

“Are there any records on what happened to the white deer?” you ask.

“That’s the only tale where it is mentioned.”

Your frown. “I assume there’s no record of the yokai either then.”

Kameko nods.

You’d like to groan, but you don’t want to give Kameko the satisfaction of seeing you squirm. So instead, you use that pent up irritation and try your best to just lay down what you know.

An ancient line of shrine maidens, born frail and dying shortly after childbirth.

A legend involving a god, a spider demon and a white deer.

Combined with what you know of your own powers and what Kisuke has revealed about your condition with your true physical body, you don’t like where it’s pointing to.

“Is there anything else, Koharu-miko? Or are you finished interrogating me?” Kameko asks passively.

“No, that’ll be all, Kameko-miko. Thank you very much for your hospitality and farewell.”

You both rise up and bow to each other, and you make your way out. Once far enough away, you let out a stream of curses. How can one person get so well under your skin by saying so little?

You decide that you don’t have enough patience for trains this time, and since it’s dark, nobody will see you soaring through the sky with flash steps.

With the nightly landscape of Osaka in front and Nara behind you, it’s actually quite relaxing flying through the night sky, the cold air ruffling your hair and your coat. You use your reikaku to avoid any accidental bumps into hollows or shinigami.

One thing you definitely want to do before leaving for Soul Society is take a final look at your true physical body, for it might be the last one unless some miracle happens.

You reach the hospital in some ten minutes and land near some bushes. The gigai will have to be dropped off for now, you figure, as it would cause some quite a ruckus that a patient is both in a coma and visiting.

You leave it neatly resting in the leaves, hoping that nobody will notice it while you make your quick visit.

Making use of other people opening doors and operating elevators, you make your way to the room where your body is sustained through artificial means.

And there you see a familiar man standing with a doctor, looking at your body.

“We can’t do anything more, unfortunately, Moriyama-san. We’ve done what we could with his body, but his left limbs are beyond recovery. They will have to be amputated. And even then, unless he recovers from the coma…” the doctor’s voice trails off as the man raises his hand.

“I know. Just… let me watch my child.”

“Eizan-san..” you whisper, realizing that your father has actually come. He’s always been absent, something related to his work, but for him to come within a day surprises you. On the other hand, it makes you extremely happy that he did show up, to the point that light tears form in the corners of your eyes.

“Please, leave us be,” Eizan sighs, and the doctor reluctantly leaves the room, leaving him, your physical body, and yourself standing there.

Eizan takes a few steps closer to your body and crosses his arms.

“What a mess you’ve gotten yourself in, Koharu…”

He takes a deep breath, and turns around.

Facing you directly.

“I had hopes that you’d stay away from this nasty business. Well, welcome to the ‘expanded’ world, son.”

Your jaw drops. He.. he can see you?

“D-Dad…?”

He sighs. “Don’t be so dramatic about it, Koharu. Of course I’d see that the husk behind me isn’t you.”

“F-First,” you begin, holding back tears, “since when?”

“Secondly, why haven’t you visited, a-and thirdly-”

You just let go and throw yourself at him in tears, hugging him. Your old man chuckles lightly and pats your head.

“Easy there, now.”

After a good moment of reunion, you let go of him, wiping your eyes with your hands.

“I’m sorry I never visited you, but I couldn’t. Though it looks like you became spiritually strong on your own anyway. But I couldn’t risk it, I wanted you to have a chance at a normal life. Prying you out of that silly shrine was a huge hassle on its own.”

You nod. “I’ve met some good friends here..”

He nods. “I’m glad.”

“As for your other question… long since before you were born.”

“No doubt you’ve already met those shinigami. Fact is though, they’re not very good at their jobs, especially outside of Japan. I’ve got my own powers, and I do my own part to make this world safer.”

“Powers?” you ask.

Eizan nods. “For now all you should know is that it’s called a Fullbring. It works a little like the shinigami’s zanpakutō.”

You two take a moment to talk about your recent events. Especially how the school was wrecked by the hollows, and that you’ve decided to go to Soul Society. You and your dad decide to head out of the hospital, just in case some nurse or doctor interrupt you and make weird assumptions about Eizan. When outside, you quickly find your gigai and slip back into it.

“I’m not going to stop you, but I won’t say I’m happy about it either,” he sighs, pocketing his hands.

“Nevertheless, you make your own decisions. That’s the only way for you to grow up.”

“You don’t think it’s a good idea?” you ask him.

“Well, you already know I’m no fan of the shinigami. They want to control everything on their own, and fail miserably at it. So I can’t say I respect them much.”

“Besides, that’s how I became what I did, because a shinigami failed to do his job.”

“Hey, dad…” you say, stopping for a moment with him.

“I’m really glad you came to visit. I only wish… I could’ve gotten to know you more.”

Your father sheds his calm and collected expression, showing his own sadness.

“Yeah… I wish that too.”

“Dad,” you begin, “I know I’ve asked you this in my letters already, but.. could you tell me about mother? How did you two meet?”

The two of you continue your nightly stroll through the streets. Eizan takes out a cigarette and lights it.

“I suppose there’s no use hiding it now,” he says, blowing some smoke out.

“I was doing a job in Nara some sixteen years ago. The hollow I was after was gunning after your mother. I made short work of it and was ready to move on, but your mother… she wouldn’t let me go without accepting food and shelter.”

“I can still remember her smile like it was yesterday,” he sighs.

“Natsuko, she said she wanted to end her family’s curse. Well, it looks like she succeeded.”

Eizan looks at you and pats your head. “She passed on her will to you, Koharu. Keep that in mind.”

You nod, feeling sad that you only have vague memories of her.

“One of my best friends, Akane-san, she’s become spiritually aware, like me,” you change the subject.

“She also is too stubborn and headstrong to ignore things, I’m a little afraid for her. Could you, by any chance, help her out? I mean, you are a human with powers, right?”

Eizan sighs. “It’s not that simple, Koharu… but, I’ll see what I can do.”

Your father escorts you to your home, the apartment that technically he owns. The two of you exchange a long hug, and finally he let’s go and leaves.

This time you have a gigai on you, perhaps sleeping will be easier with it. Looking over your home, your eyes trail through your belongings. There isn’t much, but there’s some photos of you, from a young boy at the shrine to a group photo with Akane and Chie. You’ve got a bunch of clothes too, including your old miko outfit. You’ve got no idea yet what you should even wear before going to Soul Society.

You look at your small collection of manga, and feel quite nostalgic about them. How many times have you daydreamed about being in the depicted world instead? Ever since learning how to fight in your spiritual form, those daydreams were put aside.

Before sleep claims you in your bed however, you still wonder about something. Tomorrow there’s a firework festival. It would be a good way to emotionally part with this world before leaving to the afterlife. You could go on your own, sort your thoughts out and make peace with this world. Or, you could ask somebody to accompany you on your last day in the real world.

I’ll stop the session here, leaving the vote overnight.

Hope you’ve all had fun. I’ll be around on the week as well to answer any questions or comment.

Next time we’ll either do or not the festival and enter the next chapter of the story, as we delve into Soul Society.

I’ll most likely make a new thread for it. I might take next weekend off of questing, but I’ll post here and on twitter whichever way I decide to go.

I thought it was stated that she'd recover from her injuries in a little while.
Still pretty rough though I agree.
We'll have to say it'll be like Koharu's moving overseas for a while and won't be able to keep in touch very well, but long-term he'll find a way to stop by.

Given time, she'll recover, though it'll leave a mark nonetheless. She'll walk, but with some limitations.

Character sheets and social links have been updated for #2c. I'll get to writing the festival extra update and there'll actually be one very significant choice for you.

It’s a nice, clear blue sky as you leave Chie’s house with her and Akane pushing her wheelchair, to go out and enjoy the hanabi festival in commemoration of the lives lost in the Sennichi Department Store Building fire of 1972, a tragedy that happened 9 years ago.

The fireworks will be set off only later when it gets darker, so until then you still have a bunch of time to spend at the festival markets.

Given that you won’t be needing money any longer, you decide to just spend it as leisurely as you know.

With the help of her mom and Akane, Chie-chan was able to change into her personal yukata, a vibrant yellow and white in color with a flower motif, brought together by a pink obi. Akane on the other hand has a black yukata with intricate red dragon embroidery, and a yellow obi.

You however, haven’t had the time to get one yet, given that before moving closer to Osaka to attend high school, you’ve only had your miko clothing whenever a festival took place.

Akane and Chie are in disbelief, and together decide that they will go shopping with you to find you the perfect yukata.

For what feels like hours, Akane and Chie go through dozens of different yukata and obi combinations, as if playing dress-up using your body. At first it was embarrassing and awkward, but at some point you just give up on such feelings. They give all kinds of opinions and passionately compliment you, but each time when you don’t feel like it fits you, they do their best to scramble and search for the next set.

Finally though, you find yourself in an amazingly beautiful dark-green yukata with lighter green embroidery of leaves and branches, and a purple obi with a darker thread-like horizontal pattern.

The two girls look at you with glittering eyes.

“Wow, you look so beautiful!” Chie-chan cheers.

“Damn straight! Absolutely amazing!” Akane smiles wide, scratching the back of her head.

You just stand there for a moment, taken aback by the compliments, but quickly recollect yourself.

“Thanks, I guess, heh..”

Now all properly dressed, you are ready to enjoy the various activities present at the festival with your two best friends.

There’s one thing for sure that you want to indulge in today.

Food.

You have no idea what’s it going to be like in Soul Society, but from the small bits you’ve heard from Hisashi and Kisuke, there isn’t much, because apparently most souls don’t feel hunger.

Takoyaki, yakisoba, ikayaki, okonomiyaki, yakitori, EVERYTHING yaki.

The three of you literally went from booth to booth just stuffing yourselves that it’s a wonder your yukatas didn’t rip.

Food may be great, but what makes this so much more than great, are your friends.

Without them, this may have been a melancholic experience.

But this reminds you that no matter how much fun you have right now and still will have, there will come a point when you’ll have to part for real.

So while Akane and Chie are busy just chilling and being in a food coma, you decide to excuse yourself for a while on a personal trip.

That is, you want to buy some parting gifts. It only feels right that they should get something to remember you buy. You only regret that you hadn’t had time to order anything custom-made.

Still, the festival has many shops with a very wide selection of things.

>3/3

Discuss and choose what to buy as a parting gift to:
>Akane
>Chie

It can for example be an accessory (like a ring, necklace), some figurine, or an otherwise mundane item that might be somehow related to them specifically.

For Akane it will become the Fullbring item she’ll imprint on
>>
>>4472862
>Akane A necklace with a red dragonfly shaped pendant. Akane apparently means deep red
>Chie, a paper fan with stars drawn on it since according to google Chie can mean shine
>>
I don't know enough stock-phrases in Japanese so I'll trust that >>4472908 generally knows what he's talking about.

Well it looks like this has support. Unless anyone objects and/or has other ideas, we'll go with this. I'll write up the update within a few days.

There won't be a session this weekend by the way, as I've got a few other things going plus I want to get some extra time to prepare. The weekend after that is a go though.

Also, if you guys have any fun fullbring ideas I'm all ears, as I've yet to decide on Akane's and Eizan's (Koharu's dad's) fullbring.
>>
>>4474559
Since Eizan looks like a successful businessman and also has no problem hunting down hollows, I'd guess his fullbring would have a combat function, but also some kind of charismatic effect. Maybe it could let him easily discern someone's true intentions in and outside of combat? For the weapon, maybe the trinket could transform into a sub-machinegun or some other modern-ish weapon.
>>
>>4474559
So since fullbring has themes with the item I'd think wings would be the obvious choice but what ability? Flight is a given but how about the ability of refraction. she now has to act like an intermediate between the world we've showed her and her own life as well as protect her current friend. Basically it would be primarily defensive, allowing the wings to bend things as they pass and in some ways separate components or distort parts of things refracted.
>>
>>4474559
How about if the necklace gives Akane razor sharp dragonfly wings allowing her to fly and use the wings offensively?
>>
>>4475490
I think an illusion type that fills your senses with pretty dragon flies would be cool.

Maybe starts out blocking out hearing and then slowly starts taking over their other senses until vision becomes nothing but an infinite swarm of dragon flies. Maybe it completes with the enemy bursting into dragonflies loosing their ability to sense their body as a cohesive whole.

Also it's a chain weapon because those are cool.

>charisma/clairvoyance
Good idea. Maybe I'll give him something that allows him to see "weak points" of any soul or something like that, and exploit them.
>machinegun
That sounds actually pretty rad.

>>4475449
>>4475490
>dragonfly wings
That'll definitely happen, something I also ended up with. Flight, boosted agility and all is a given. I was also considering making the wings made of tough reishi, which could be split off to form weapons and shields, but with each wing taken off it reduces mobility.

Maybe could even make it a full clad-type in its final form, and add more wings with progress.

>>4475674
>illusion type
Hmm didn't think about that, but I'll put it in my notes. If it doesn't end up in the dragonfly fullbring, it might be something she can get later on down the line.

Good ideas anons!

You’ve never really bought a gift in your whole life. This will be tough, but you set a resolution for yourself to find two gifts for your best friends, something that they’d like and would remember you with.

In about half an hour of looking around you end up with two gifts from which you got a strong feeling that Akane and Chie will like them.

You know that the specific kanji used in Chie’s name mean ‘thousand’ and ‘shine,’ and when you found a large black fan with many stars, your heart told you this was the one. A night sky filled with a thousand shining stars. In a way, Chie is like a bright star for you. A bit like a motherly figure, but your age, and not as awkward as this sounds right now when you put your feelings to words.

For Akane, you found a dragonfly necklace made in the style of stained glass windows, deep red like her name. It is said a dragonfly represents wisdom, change and adaptability in life. She might not be the smartest gal, but she is perceptive and ready to throw herself into the mud if it’s the right thing to do. Akane’s decision to become stronger spiritually after being exposed to the spiritual realm clearly shows her readiness to adapt.

You quickly make your way back to the table near the food stand from where you last stuffed your bellies full. Your friends are still there and wave.

“Glad to have you back, Koharu-chan!” Chie gives you a sweet smile.

“Found what you were looking for?” Akane asks. “Wanna show?”

“It’s a surprise!” you smile, waving a finger in front of you.

“Aww, buzzkill. Anyway, there’s some fun stands with all kinds of games, let’s try all of ‘em!”

“Heh, actual games now instead of the arcade? You’re on!” you grin, ready to take on the challenge.

“There, there, now,” Chie smiles awkwardly, trying to calm you and Akane as you almost butt heads. If one were to look closely, one might even see static energy discharges between your foreheads.

You take on moving Chie’s wheelchair this time as you navigate yourselves through the crowds enjoying the festival.

The sun is setting, painting the sky and clouds orange and red, like a canvas painting. It’s also a sign that it won’t be long before the fireworks start.

But until then, it’s game on.

There’s all kinds of scooping games: goldfish scooping, super ball scooping, toy scooping, yo-yo scooping, bizarrely even underwear scooping.

Well, you’ve already known for a long time that this country has some weird things going for it, so you don’t mind it too much.

In any case, what’s required is a water tub, the items to scoop, and some tools to do it. Sometimes it’s a proper dipper, other times it’s a flimsy piece of shit paper scoop that breaks upon first contact with the water. Usually in such cases the stand owner is quickly shouted at and called a scammer.

There’s one problem with scooping games though: due to the wheelchair, Chie is handicapped, unable to properly be near the water tub. You quickly set aside your rivalry with Akane and helped Chie with one game, before moving on to something which all of you could play without trouble.

And that was ring tossing and gun-shooting.

In the end any rivalry you still have turns humorous and cheerful, and you truly have a wonderful time together, even winning some plushie prizes.

Then, you set out to find a nice spot on a hill to watch the fireworks as the remaining light in the sky fades, giving way to stars.

>2/3
>>
File: hanabi.jpg (154 KB, 600x400)
154 KB
154 KB JPG
You set up a picnic blanket that Chie took from home on the ground and help Chie off of her wheelchair onto the nice and soft fabric, and sit with her. Naturally, you sit between the two.

“I had a really great time,” you finally say as you look at the stars for a moment without saying anything.

“I couldn’t wish for a better way to spend my… last day.”

Of course, this turns the mood a little sadder. You know that Akane is still conflicted about you leaving for Soul Society. Chie is probably too, but she seems to have accepted that this is how things are going to go.

You don’t let them wallow in their own thoughts though, as you take out the presents you bought for them.

“I’ve got a little something for you. I thought it would be, well, nice to give you gifts. Something… to remember me, while we’re away. Until we meet again.”

You give Chie the paper fan with the starry night illustration on both sides. As she unfolds it, her eyes give way to tears immediately. She raises the unfolded fan to hide her eyes.

Then you give Akane the red stained-glass style dragonfly necklace, which she holds in her hand. As much as she tries to act tough, she’s always been honest with showing her emotions and tears also start forming in the corners of her eyes.

“Shit… and here I promised myself not to cry,” Akane says, softly closing her hand around the necklace.

You yourself can’t help but feel emotionally impacted by your best friends shedding tears on your behalf so much that tears start rolling down your cheeks as well.

“It’s… it’s like going overseas,” you try your best to keep somehow explaining this whole thing. Anything really that makes it sound less like you’ve died and are going to the afterlife.

“I’ll be back before you know it, r-really. So you just wait until then! I won’t ever forget about you, so don’t you forget about me, o-okay?!”

As the first fireworks start flying and exploding in the sky in vibrant colors and patterns, Chie and Akane hug you from both sides, and you let the tears just flow as you feel each other’s warmth and love, as well as look at the beautiful display of colors.

You are truly thankful to these two, your best friends.

I do plan to do a bit more worldbuilding than canon on the rukongai. I'm also planning on deviating somewhat from the "districts in circle formation around seireitei" concept. It may be so near seireitei, but I'd imagine the farther you go away from it the more there'd be "local" clusters of districts. What I sort of want to do is somehow tie that to the living world, so generally roughly deceased people from the same region would go to a roughly same location in SS.

This also allows me to just have some more options on things to have in the rukongai, besides extremely poor slums (not to say that there won't be at all) since in canon it was just the farther away from seireitei you are the shittier it is.

Also, can you guys test if you can open and listen to this link? I think I've found a site that won't fuck shit up and remove bleach OST, so I uploaded all that stuff there. Link also contains the name of it so if it does get nuked people can still see what it was.
