You are Ushi Walker, the half-japanese/half-american wielder of the mighty quirk “Everything is Bigger in Texas", one of U.A. High's top first-year students, and currently a visitor at the Yaoyorozu household, along with four of your friends.

While Mina, Sero and Kaminari seem content looking around at the fancy knick-knacks that decorate the halls of the mansion, Kyoka seems to have found something especially fascinating near the floor, continuously looking down.

No one spends that long looking at the tips of their toes for no reason, you think to yourself as you take in Jiro’s bearing. Not for a good reason anyway.

So as you all follow Yaomama’s lead down the hall, you make sure to slow down and let Mina and Sero take the front so you can walk on Kyoka's left. Denki seemingly does the same from the right.

Denki looks at you over Kyoka's head with a bit of surprise, but flashes you a kind smile and nods at her. He may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but he is sharper than most at understanding people. Enough to not to irk you like Mineta when talking about you and now picking up Kyoka's somber mood even with the mansion's myriad of novelties to distract him.

>"So… What's so cool about the floor?" He asks Kyoka with a cheeky smile, getting her to look at him and making her sullen expression twist and vanish. Replaced with annoyance as marked by her rolling eyes.

>"Just shut up." She immediately snaps then realizes her over reaction. "...Yeah. I'm just taking in the sights, floor included."

>"Well it's marble, right? Of course it's cool." Denki comments, tapping the floor with his heel. "Must be great now that the days are warmer… Kinda makes you wish we could stay over, right?"

>"No." Once again, a cutting response but this time she doesn't seem to care to soften it.

>"Yeah, thought it wasn't the floor…" He remarks, raising his hands in an overly dramatic motion, a cheerful smile cemented to his face. "So what's going on with you?"

>"Don't you need to focus on studying, Mr. Soon-to-be-drop-out?" She snaps a third time, spitting the title at him and briefly receiving a grimace from the happy-go-lucky boy.

>"...Yeah. Everyone's been telling me that lately." He replies, trying to keep his facade. "But that's why I'm placing my trust and future in Professor Yaoyorozu's capable hands!"

>"She won't be able to save you everytime." She growls, making Denki stop in his tracks for a second.

>"...I know, I know." He says, starting to walk again but not attempting to keep level with her anymore. "Just… Gimme a break."

And just like that, now there's twice as much gloom apparent to you as before.

"Hey now you! Chin up!" You tell him, looking behind you. "We'll getcha into that camping trip, okay? This ain't nothin' effort and elbow grease can't fix. Then we'll deal with gettin' some studyin' habits into ya, so don't start mopin'!"

>"Thanks, T.A. Walker." He says with a chuckle, the small smile that follows is good enough for you. Having made sure things were not getting worse, you finally address Kyoka.

"That was… Kinda mean, don't you think?" You ask her, nodding towards the boy tailing the group now.

>"Well, yeah. Had to get sparkplug there to leave me alone somehow." She answers with a shrug.

"Sugah… What’s gotcha so down?" You then ask her, placing a hand on her exposed shoulder. "He's not the only one that noticed… Maybe you can tell me instead?"

>"...I'm not quite sure myself." She says, so softly that it's hard for you to hear it. "Been feeling like I don't fit in for a while… It comes and goes, but now, with that look? It's bad… Kinda makes me want to leave already. It's like I'm not supposed to be here."

Unsure of what to say, you lift your hand from her and pull her into a half hug instead.

"Yer a cool highschool gal comin' to a study sesh at a pal's place, it ain't nothin' you shouldn't be doin." You tell her, as reassuring as you can manage. "'s just a lil' bigger… and fancier than usual."

>"You think?" She says, then waves at your dress. "I don't think I've ever seen you wearing something without denim before and now you look ready for a ball while I came here ready to hang out at the mall."

"Yeah... Ah think ah might have over done it. " You simply tell her, letting go of the hug and readjusting the top of your dress to ensure nothing spills out. "Really though, don't sweat it. You are amongst friends!"

>"...Thanks." She says giving you a small, not entirely genuine, smile. "I'm sure it'll go away when we get to studying."

Just to be sure, you walk the rest of the way shoulder to shoulder with her. It may not be the case for everyone, especially in Japan, but you find a friendly presence and touch comforting. Maybe it works for her too.

It wasn't too long before you reached the Auditorium, which still lived up to its name, the grand space is massive enough that the long table at the end, large enough to sit your whole class, looked paltry in its interior.

>"Momo, your friends are here!" Yaomama announces as soon as she enters the room.

If not the rich tones of the wooden table or the vastness of the room itself, the most remarkable thing in the room has to be a library cart stocked full of books and the girl pushing it.

>"I'm so sorry I couldn't…" She starts an apology but looks at you from horns to toes and goes silent for a second. Then she briefly covers her face with her hand as she readjusts her reading glasses. "...Pardon me, so sorry I couldn't greet you all in-person, I’ve been kept busy until the last second making sure we had all the materials at hand that we could need."

An embroidered shirt and beige pants combined with her reading glasses truly make her look like a professor, and you are almost certain it's intentional this time. Between the attire, all the materials, the glint in her eyes and the flush on her cheeks, it's clear she's ecstatic about this study session.

>"I'll leave you children to your studies then,… But I'll send some tea along later." Yaomama says as she leaves, the smile not leaving her face. "Be a good teacher now, Momo!"

>"Yes Mother." Momo answers, and you can see Kyoka sigh in relief as Yaomama closes the door behind her. "Now, without further delay, let us begin the tutoring!"

>"Woo-hoo!" Mina cheers.

>"Take it away, Professorozu!" Says Sero as he takes a seat.

>"No pressure, I just depend on you to go to the retreat, Teach!" Denki adds, falling into another chair and slumping over the table.

>"Don't put this on her." Kyoka chastises him immediately as she sits down.

>"Not to worry my friends, you can count on me!" Yaomomo excitedly spouts "We'll raise your test scores!"

Seeing the rest of your friends take a seat, you are about to do the same when your host hands you an open notebook.

>"Here. Since they were all kind enough to let me know their weaknesses, I formulated this study plan to address them." She instructs you energetically while holding another notebook with the same contents. "For you on the other hand, I tailored it so you could practice while helping me help them!"

"And here Ah was startin' to worry that you were takin' on too much." You tell her with a chuckle, flipping through the notebook and seeing it all written by hand.

>"Oh, nonsense." She replies, then leans closer to you, rubbing her arm. "You would know that few things are as motivating as being needed. But having someone to lean on helps, too."

The tutoring began in earnest then, as Momo answered initial questions and assigned exercises and made up examples to explain her methods while you fluttered around the table lending a helping hand wherever needed.

Mina's English was beyond rough, but between Momo and you, she quickly started grasping the meaning of the example sentences and wrote down what you dictated with few errors, now grasping the structure and able to translate back and forth well enough.

Neither of you wanted to leave her at just “good enough”, but she needed help with everything else too. You opted to shore up her competency with the other subjects before trying to help her excel.

Jiro just had never really grasped the method to solve a quadratic equation, but once Momo took some direct time to explain it to her, it took just a few suggestions and a page of exercises for it to sink in. Her previous hesitation and nervousness seemed to vanish once she allowed herself to get lost in her work.
>>
Sero's kanji issue didn't need any help but concerted practice. Following the guide Momo prepared allowed him to focus more of his studying efforts in shoring up his knowledge in Chemistry.

Unlike the other three, Denki didn't seem to need help studying to drive lessons home, but rather to learn everything more or less from scratch. It spoke to Momo's enthusiasm that she's not disheartened or at all bothered by this.

"Sugah, puh-lease…" You plea with him while pinching the bridge of your nose. "That's a terrible idea."

>"When X and Y form and ionic bond... the auxiliary verbs, founders of the Sumerian empire have to…" The blond boy rambles, trying his latest idea of cramming everything together at the same time.

>"His brain's toast." Kyoka simply states, pointing at him with one of her jacks while she continues solving her exercises.

>"C'mon man, pull it together! Don't you want to attend the camp?" Sero tries to motivate him to come back to reality.

>"Yeah! Think of all the fun stuff we'll do there!" Mina adds, then taps her chin and looks at the horizon. "Or what Mr. Aizawa said would happen if you fail… Remedial Hell and all that…"

>"AGH! Please… Some grey matter donor…" Denki moans, collapsing over the table as his apparent will to continue leaves him.

>"Whoops. My bad." Mina apologizes, grimacing at the sight.

"...Do you need more help with Biology, sugah?" You ask, at this point believing he would think that a good idea.

>"I believe he needs rest." Momo says, clasping her hands together and looking over the entire group. "Why don't we take a short break everyone? Proper rest is crucial to the learning process, after all."

After a short pause without anyone objecting, she turns towards the door.

>"Uchimura?" She calls without even raising her voice. Seemingly having waited at the other side of the entrance this entire time, the butler quickly opens the door and enters the room, waiting for further instructions.

>"May we have some tea?" Momo asks.

>"Certainly, miss." Uchimura answers, softly clapping two times.

Instantly, as if they were waiting outside as well, five maids wheel in a cart with tea and cookies, the two teacups on hot plates releasing a wafty, steamy aroma that told everyone that their contents were as fine as the porcelain that contained it. Strong black tea of the kind your Momma prefers along with a savory, sweet smell of red. The kind of tea you have mentioned as your favorite, despite it simply being the one you dislike the least.

If you had to compare it to something, you'd say the maids deed’s were on the level of any Formula One pit crew. Placing the contents of their cart on the table quickly, pouring the tea in a matter of seconds, leaving a large plate of cookies and six cups of tea and then leaving along with Uchimura in less than a minute without spilling a drop or leaving any crumbs behind.
>>
"That was kinda amazin'." You say, genuinely impressed. "Weird, but amazin'."

>"Heh… Tea poured for me by a real-life maid…" Kaminari mutters, hovering over his steamy tea cup and starting to look better already. You aren't quite sure if it's the tea or the maids to thank for that.

>"Enjoy everyone!" Momo recites as she lifts her cup, prompting all of you to do the same.

>"Ooh… Soothing…" Mina purrs, sinking in her chair’s cushioning as she slumps down. "Cookies look yummers too."

The tea smells better than any you had before, and the taste as you sip confirms that it's not pure red tea as you know it. If you had to guess, even the sugar was special in some way.

Along with the decorations, your own dress and the lavish mansion, it's hard not to imagine yourself at a fancy gathering in imperial England, royal and pampered. It's not something you would enjoy for long, the strict etiquette, rules, and obligations would drive you mad really fast… But for a minute, it's a relaxing fantasy of a past that never was.

Absentmindedly grabbing a cookie, you shrug off the weird itch in the back of your nose and bite into the slightly melted looking, yet still fancy cookie.

The moment you swallow the first bite and your tongue has the time to process what just passed by, you are sent plummeting back into the real world. It was acrid and bitter, slightly oily in a way unlike butter or even lard could ever be. That alone was weird, but you could believe rich people ate it… Until the after-taste shifted, and your mouth hits a pocket of poorly mixed ingredients. The sanctuary of rich, savory chocolate continues for a second, before a similar yet far more bitter sensation takes hold. Pure cacao maybe? But the last bit…

The last change in flavor tells you that this isn't just a new rich people trend, as you refuse to believe anyone would choose to add overcooked seafood into their desserts.

Oysters come to mind and… some oily fish? Milk chocolate, pure cacao, oysters, probably sardines and maybe worse things hidden under those stronger flavors… You'd be hard pressed to recall tasting anything worse.

Looking around, you can see your friends looking about as well. Pale, sweating and in Mina's case, trying very hard to keep her gag reflex in check. She reaches for her cup and drinks the entire steaming drink in one swig, then comes up gasping for air.

Giving your cup a brief glance, you weigh your options and immediately do as Mina did, burning your mouth and throat in the process. Your eyes start to tear up. Unequivocally the right choice.

>"What's the matter?" Momo asks, looking over everyone in the room, their expressions continuing to reflect the ordeal. "Are they not to your liking?"

>"If this is what you like, that's cool…" Sero comments. "But it's not for me."

She reaches for a cookie, but you lunge forwards and grab her hand before she can.

"Sugah, trust me. Ya don't wanna do that." You tell her before letting go of her hand.

She raises an eyebrow and grabs a cookie anyway.

>"It would be hard to consider any feedback without trying them myself. Besides, they can't be that bad." She says, taking a bite. Her expression changes instantly, leaving behind her curiosity and shifting between shock, disgust, panic and to your surprise, anger as she drops the cookie and covers her mouth. "Ough… Pardon me. I'll be right back. It seems there's something I must attend to."

As soon as she says that, she storms out of the room, her heavy steps making her not sound like her calm and collected self at all.

The moment the door closes behind her your four remaining friends speak up their minds.

>"Augh… I can still taste it!" Mina complains, taking one of the kettles and pouring herself a new cup, which she immediately and loudly drains, gulping down the entire thing in seconds. "Ah… It burns so good…"

>"This isn't a snack! Th-these things are bioweapons!" Denki denounces, pointing at the plate of cookies and glaring at them with suspicion.

"At least they woke you up." You try to make light of the probable food poisoning you all have fallen victims to. "In only one bite! Betcha you can't find a cuppa joe that can do the same."

>"Yeah, and I bet a second bite would keep me up all night if I dared." Sero jokes with a shallow laugh. "...And a third one would grant me eternal sleep. Pretty sure of that."

>"It must have been an accident of some sort, since Yaomomo thought they were awful too, right?" Kyoka posits, glancing at the door. "That's why she left like that?"

>"Prolly." Mina answers with a shrug, then jumps off her seat, wide eyed. "Gotta make use of the break. Too much tea and... stuff."

>"Yeah, gotta find a bathroom too." Kyoka says, walking towards the door.

You… Can definitely tell what they are talking about. The foul mixture within you is putting on a fight. Nothing you can't withstand, but it's pretty uncomfortable, and it's probably gonna get worse over time.

I think it's less muttie milk and more like someone tried to use seafood and oyster added to the cookie.

It's not exactly a hard choice, especially with your own insides making some loud arguments itself.

"'yuup. Tea's runnin' right through." You say, following it with a sheepish laugh as you hop off your seat and go join the girls by the door. At the last second though, you look over your shoulder at the boys. "And you lot just try and study on your own. Note down any questions ya have and Ah'm sure Yaomomo will be happy to help when she returns!"

>"Got it!" Sero replies with a simple and calm smile, unlike Kaminari, who eyes his notebook with almost as much suspicion as he did the cookies.

Having left the boys with something to do, you join with the girls and exit the auditorium, meeting a maid standing right outside the door.

>"Is there anything I can help you with?" She asks in a kind yet practiced tone. It's her job, after all.

>"Yeah, can you point us to the bathroom? Like, right now?" Mina asks, haphazardly pointing in random directions, of which you know at least two would lead to the gardens.

>"Of course. Follow me, please." The maid says, taking the lead with a calm looking yet long-strided gait. "I'll take you to the nearest bathroom, posthaste."

While you knew of a bathroom, the one the maid takes you to is far closer to the auditorium. Not close or even near, just closer. And considering how Mina almost tackles the door as soon as the maid tells you which one it is, you are glad she was there to guide you.

>"Phew… Felt like I was gonna burst." The pink girl comments after exiting, drying her hands on her shirt.

>"There had to be some sort of trade off to living in such a labyrinth." Kyoka remarks, giving the maid a sideways glance. "You go, Ushi. I can wait a few minutes."

You nod and enter, then take a second to turn on the water on the sink before going on and doing your business. Leaving the bathroom with your hands dripping wet, you look at your two friends waiting there…

"...Where's the maid?" You ask, looking around. The hall seems identical both to your left and right, going on for what feels are miles without anything that clues you in as to where you came from.

>"I dismissed her, didn't need anyone else listening." Kyoka says as she enters the bathroom.

>"Yeah, she told her we could find our way back." Mina confirms, then leans close to you as soon as the door closes. "We are totally lost, aren't we?"

"...Like words in the wind, Ah reckon." You tell her after looking around for another minute.

When Kyoka comes out, the only one to use the towel, she comes face to face with your slightly irked expression and Mina's smug mug.

>"So… Which way did we come from again?" Mina asks her, her tone making it clear she doesn't think Kyoka can answer.

>"Uhm…" The shorter girls mumbles, looking around and finding nothing useful either, sheepishly touching the tips of her jacks together. "I have... no idea?"

>"Well, I think it's this way!" Mina says, marching to the right.

>"You sure?" Kyoka asks, looking around again, clearly unsure if Mina's chosen path was the right one. You are far more certain however.

"She has no idea either." You tell her, pinching the bridge of your nose.

>"Not a clue, but I bet exploring will be fun!" Mina says, sporting an optimist smile.

"Might as well… Maybe we find something recognisable and return soon!" You say, trying to be positive.

So you walk. And walk some more. And take pictures with an armor. Then walk some more, feeling the minutes pass by, starting to feel increasingly lost as you reach the half hour mark.

>"I never should've dismissed the maid…" Kyoka comments, looking more nervous by the minute.

"...Ya think?" You grumble, making a conscious effort not to berate her.

>"Oh, relax you too! We are bound to find our way if we walk long enough!" Mina tells you, her carefree smile telling you she does mean everything she's saying. "It's not an everyday opportunity to explore a megamansion like this! It's an adventure!"

While Kyoka is almost dragging her feet, Mina keeps skipping along with seemingly boundless energy. You stand somewhere in between, keeping pace with Mina but without the enthusiasm.

>"Maybe we can get Yaomomo to show us her room later!" Mina says as she takes a second to analyze another door, identical to the dozens you have already walked past, then hops along to the next one.

>"Maybe…" Kyoka says, clearly thinking about something else.

"Pretty sure she'd do it if you ask." You say, shrugging. Why wouldn't she?

>"Hey… Now that we are alone…" You hear Kyoka say, looking down at her outfit. "Do any of you see anything weird about my clothes?"

>"That getup? Naw, it's awesome!- Oh hey, I found a library!" Mina answers, then immediately dashes off to check a bronze plaque next to a particularly large door.

"Nuthin' at all. Diet punk's about what Ah'd guess you'd wear." You tell her.

>"Yeah! Ushi in that dress is way, way weirder!" Mina comments from the door. "Are you wearing pasties under that or just hoping there's no accidents?"

"...Shut up." You tell her, adjusting your dress again just in case, then turn to look at Kyoka. "But why the question, sugah?"

>"...I like you all, you two, Tsuyu, Uraraka, Hagakure too." She starts, clearly putting some effort into her words as she taps the tips of her jacks together. "But you are all… close, in a way. With Yaomomo there's so little common ground… Any push could nip our friendship in the bud..."

"...Like Yaomama's judgement?" You finish, getting a feeling of where that was going.

>"That's stupid." Mina chips in with all the grace of a smiling sledgehammer. "Yaomomo wouldn't turn her back on you or anyone else. Haven't you seen how lonely she is?"

"Say what?" You let out, fairly taken aback by that. Kyoka is almost as shocked, if less vocal.
>>
>"What?" Mina says with a giggle, then sobers up a bit. "She really wants people to depend on her and lets herself be dragged into anything, but this is like the first time she starts something. Feels to me she really wants to make friends but doesn't really know how to approach people yet. Like… Lack of practice! So yeah! She's not gonna drop any friends for any silly reason."

If you weren't shocked before, you definitely are now. Stunned even.

>"Ah, there you are, Miss Ashido, Miss Jiro, Miss Walker." You hear the butler's voice behind you, his soft steps having snuck past your not very sensitive hearing.

>"Oh hi Mr. Uchimura!" Mina greets him first.

>"I'm so terribly sorry. I was sure I asked one of our staff to escort you…" The butler laments, bowing deeply and adding to the awkwardness in the air.

"Yeah, not the maid's fault, innit?" You point out, nodding at Kyoka.

>"My bad, I told her not to bother."

>"Be that as it may, our duty is to ensure you don't become lost, and in that, we have failed." Uchimura apologizes, and it feels like he's personally sorry for failing, despite not being directly involved. How professional.

>"Eh, don't sweat it! We had fun exploring!" Mina reassures him, getting Kyoka to glare at her, but riposting with that smug smile of hers.

>"I see. Very well… Back to the auditorium, then…?" He says, looking up as if something is distracting him, before looking down at you with a pleading expression. "Actually, perhaps we could pay a visit to Miss Momo?"

Taking a deep breath you immediately get what was distracting him. It's faint still, likely due to the distance, but somewhere someone is mixing more cookies, the smell almost making you tear up from memory alone.

We aren't that good at baking things besides bread, but we are definitely better than Momo. Cooking class is in session.

Not to mention the fact that Uchimura has a pleading look. Which means he is asking for help

Ah yes. We can just go home after this. Some people are potentially going to have to live and work around the smell of burnt chocolate and seafood.

>[Whatever it takes to slay that culinary aberration before it plagues the realms of man, machine and god alike. "Sure, let's go! Lead the way, Mr. Uchimura."]
It's a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake, Momo. You've just got to do your cooking by the book. Seriously. Please just follow a recipe next time.
>>
The pleading look on the old man's face, the smell starting to waft through the mansion or the chance to find out why your friend is so upset. Any of those would have been reason enough to go, but together they make it an obvious choice.

"Sure, let's go! Lead the way, Mr. Uchimura." You say, striking a pose and pointing down what you hope is the right hallway.

>"Aren't we supposed to wait for her in the auditorium?" Kyoka asks, pointing in the opposite direction, despite being as lost as you are.

>"C'mon, where's your sense of adventure?" Mina asks back, sidestepping the question altogether. "We are on an expedition!"

"A crusade!" You add, leaning back pointing to the heavens above, past beyond the ceiling, roof and clouds.

>"Yeah!" Mina continues, leaning against your back and mirroring your pose for little reason than dramatic effect.

Kyoka just chortles and rolls her eyes at that, and soon you are on your way following the butler, who seemed to know every identical corner from each other. The smell only grows stronger as you advance, and in a matter of minutes even the girls go from scrunching their noses to clearly overwhelmed. You can't blame them, since the only reason you aren't as affected is that you've smelled far worse at pigsties, and even then you are pretty sure that you'll need to go stuff your face in the gardens to get the smell out of your nose.

>"Yeesh, what's that!?" Mina nasally asks, holding her nose to try and block the smell. A futile endeavor.

The butler stops, turns around and then addresses her.

>"The cookies you were enjoying earlier, miss." Uchimura informs you.

You have to bite your tongue to keep yourself from making a remark about how wrong that is.

>"...Yeah, that checks out." Mina says, sticking out her tongue for a brief moment. Considering how quickly she retracted it, you can tell she too can taste the stench now. "Ew…"

>"Please this way." Uchimura says as he approaches what looks to be the final turn at the end of the hallway, changing his gait into a slower, nigh silent one. You are all practically tiptoeing as you approach an ajar door, the source of the smell.

>"Mother, please… I don't think that's a good idea either…" You hear Momo say, sounding fairly exasperated, but making a weary attempt to hide it.

>"And why not?" Her mother asks, in that adult way that clearly indicates she doesn't think your answer will change anything.

>"It's just… Sardines and chocolate? That's... hardly an ideal pairing." Momo gently tries to explain, despite the caliber of the atrocity she's seemingly trying to stop.

>"But, Momo! The fish's omega oils are good for the brain! As is cacao. Don't worry, once we blend it all together with the oysters, you won't even recognize the fish." Yaomama happily explains, as if she wasn't describing the brewing of a poison. "They were in the earlier cookies too, and I bet you couldn't tell!"
>>
You look at your friends and share a complicit look, all three of you silently creeping towards the door and peeking in.

In other circumstances, you would have been in awe at the kitchen itself, looking fit for the back of the house of any three stars restaurant, fully equipped. Now however, you are focused on your friend, her ma, and the fresh looking ingredients on the counter in front of them, a variety of nuts, spices, fresh fish, cabbage, spinach and quite a few things you can't name, all of them looking of the utmost quality and definitely deserving a better fate than this vile concoction.

Sharing a queasy look this time, you make sure you all have arrived to the same conclusion. If the cookies kill you later, Yaomama is the one you need to haunt.

>"I take it Yaomama isn't the greatest cook, huh?" Mina whispers, getting a nod out of Kyoka, who tries to connect her jacks to the door without causing damage, to no avail.

"Ain't that a fact…" You whisper back.

>"But the fishines it adds…" Momo pleads, struggling to find a way to politely put her thoughts into words. "Can't you smell how bad it is, mother...?"

>"Oh? No, not at all." Yaomama answers, grabbing the mentioned ingredients and tossing them into a large blender. "Come to think of it, I don't smell a thing. Perhaps I've caught a cold?"

>"You'd have to chop off your nose not to smell that…" Kyoka whispers her quip.

"Either she's grown accustomed or it burnt off her nose. Ah give it fifty-fifty odds." You say with a nod, joking but capable of believing either case to be true.

>"A cold you say? Why not take a break then? You've been working so hard, Mother." Momo says with a bit more energy, perhaps hopeful that this new angle would work.

>"Nonsense." Yaomama quickly answers, swiftly dashing those newfound hopes. "I can't afford a break. These cookies won't bake themselves, after all."

"Of course not, the dough doesn't hate itself that much." You grumble.

>"That's a lot of trouble to go for cookies." Kyoka wonders, whispering just loud enough that you can make it out. "It's not like she can't buy a tin."

As if to answer that, Yaomama steps back from the counter with clenched fists.

>"These are for your friends and their final exams, Momo!" She exclaims, her voice a bit shaky with emotions, but you can't quite make out which ones. "Failure means not attending training camp, doesn't it? Since you've been kind enough to tutor them, the very least I can do is provide some brainpower cookies for your study party."

Then it clicks. It's a terrible idea still, but the ingredients listed and the ones on the counter seem to include everything you've ever seen recommended on any list of brain foods for studying… Sure, blending it all together did less to boost your brains than it did to bust your guts, but at least you can tell why she came up with the idea.

>"Mother… I really, truly appreciate the sentiment, but-" Momo tries to interject, but is quickly interrupted.
>>
>"I'm just so happy, Momo. You aren't just replacing her, you are making so many new friends! After… After pressuring you so much to focus on your studies, the least I can do is to be here and help out in whatever way I can..." Her mother continues, then takes a deep breath, her enthusiasm rebounding. "So what if I mixed up the salt and sugar last time! It won't happen again! And bad odors you say? Well, if we add green tea to the mixture it should neutralize any and all offensive odors! Although curry powder does that too… Let's toss in both to be safe!"

>"Aww! She just wants to help!" Mina swoons, seemingly forgetting you aren't supposed to be there and immediately revealing your presence.

>"Pray tell, what are you three doing here?" Yaomama asks as Momo stares at you, mortified.

"My apologies, I brought them here." Uchimura says, stepping forwards and bowing.

>"You… Uhm… really don't need to eat these cookies…" Momo mutters.

>"Don't worry. They are just so… unique." Kyoka barely avoids lying through her teeth, chuckling.

>"Oh yeah! Great… Motivators!" Mina adds, seemingly giving Kyoka an idea. Not a good idea, if the deviousness of her smile is anything to go by.

>"On that note, I'm sure we can use the rest to get Kaminari to study..." She says, her glee unnerving you a bit. "Let's go back and stuff a few more down his throat."

>"How about we help out with this next batch?" Momo offers with a wide if a bit shaky smile.

>"What a wonderful idea! We can even bake an extra-large cookie for your dear Kaminari!" Yaomama says, almost making Kyoka choke on her tongue and Mina cover her mouth not to laugh too loudly.

>"G-good idea…" Kyoka says as she recovers, then freezes as she notices Yaomama staring at her once more. You ready yourself to lend emotional support and-

>"I must say, I love your fashion sense." The woman says with an earnest smile, tilting her head to the side.

>"Say what?" Kyoka blurts out, clearly surprised.

>"Oh, sorry if my staring came off as rude! It's just that back in the day, I had a friend, a.. very close friend you could say…" Yaomama says with a very youthful giggle. "Well, this friend in the grade above mine was in a band and dressed just like that. Seeing your outfit brought back all those memories of highschool…"

>"Mother… Didn't you attend an all-girls school?" Momo asks, clearly shocked.

>"Yes. This friend was a bit of a tomboy, but everyone admired her… I even tried copying her style for a time, but I could never quite pull off the look… Ah, the nostalgia…" By the end of her answer, Yaomama was pretty much a blushing schoolgirl.

>"Oh… Was that all?" Kyoka asks, relief evident in her voice and relaxing posture. "I was worried I offended you somehow."
>>
>"Ah, of course. I almost forgot about that…" Yaomama says, walking towards a massive refrigerator and opening it, pulling out a large, beautifully decorated chocolate cake. The heavenly smell able to pierce through the miasma in the kitchen like a godsent spear.

>"Ooh… Pretty." Mina comments, a glimmer in her black eyes as she gazes upon the dessert.

>"...You. Uhm… You didn't bake that one, right? Yaomama?" Kyoka warily asks, taking a step back from the confection.

>"No, I had our chef prepare it, so you can be sure it's scrumptious." She answers, placing it down on another counter.

>"Why don't we enjoy this cake and then get back to work?" Momo offers, then mutters. "Whatever labour that may be..."

She looks so tired...

>"Work, yeah!" Mine asserts with a nod and a fistpump… Then jumps. "But first, cake!"

It only takes a minute to cut the cake and distribute the slices, but Yaomama then makes herself busy going to fetch uncontaminated ingredients, while Uchimura disposes of the ones on the counter. It's sad to see the foodstuffs go, but it had to be done… They were far too gone, tainted.

This leaves the three of you standing by a shiny metal counter, eating some damn good cake, the cream as fluffy if not better than the one you had the other day. Where has this stuff been all your life!? It even seems to cheer up Momo a bit, who starts looking a bit less tired by the forkful.

If we’re going to pry, it’s maybe better to not do so in front of YaoMama and Uchimura and the girls. Might put Momo in an awkward position to ask about (I’m guessing) her punk-rock ex-girlfriend in front of Jiro.

You make a mental note to double down on your squats for the next month. No particular reason as to why that particular exercise , but all this cake you've been treated to this week will end up settling somewhere if you don't put in some extra effort.

Like the one All Might brought in on Wednesday but even better, this is the chocolate cake that will define chocolate cake in your mind from now on. Sure, you know that the mysterious yet sweet, creamy goodness is nothing but fat, but it's just so good.

It’s several minutes before anything that isn't either a moan or swooning is said, but that also gives you a bit of time to think, to dwell on what Yaomama said and to figure out how to ask about it.

So you wait until Momo has gone through most of her plate, when she looks calm and happy before taking the plunge.

"Say, sugah… What was that 'bout “replacin”' your Ma mentioned?" You ask her, lazily pointing at her with your dirty fork.

She freezes in place for a second, staring at you. It’s readily apparent she really wishes you hadn't said that.

>"Nothing you should be concerned about." She replies before taking another forkful of cake. A delaying tactic at this point since you can tell she's no longer enjoying it, looking incredibly high-strung as she goes through the motions.

"If it's makin' ya nervous, Ah'd like to know." You continue, giving her your best reassuring smile. From her immediate reaction, you’re completely hooked on finding out now. "Who knows, maybe Ah can help."

>"No, I don't think it can be helped." Momo sighs, looking down once more. None of the exhaustion from before, just a deep sadness, as if defeated. "And rest assured you've helped more than enough already… But I implore you, please pry no further."

>"Ooh… Supportive nosiness…" Mina muses, watching from the sidelines and getting an elbow to the ribs from Kyoka for the trouble. "Ow, stop that!"

>"Don't interrupt them!" The dark haired girl answers. While you know she's trying to be sensitive, she seems just as interested in finding out.

"You still look sad, that means Ah can still do better." You tell her, taking a step closer to the taller girl and leaning into her shoulder before speaking a fair bit quieter. "...But Ah'll stop if you really don't wanna tell, it's not really mah place to pry. It's just that it sounded bad and Ah was worried 'bout you."

That seems to do it. It’s hesitant and weak, but it's nonetheless a smile that appears on her face when she looks up again.

>"Mother… Her comment was wrong, but she meant my friend." Momo begins to explain, taking a deep breath and pouring her heart out. "Dear Kumiko…"

"Is she…?" You let the question trail off, as everyone knows what you mean.

>"I hope not… But it is possible. I am not sure..." She continues, shaking her head softly. "Allow me to clarify…"

Looking around and catching eyes with you all, she takes another deep breath before telling her tale.

>"Once my parents became aware of my gift, everything was quickly arranged for me to reach my full potential. Tutors and books were brought from all over Japan and beyond so I could learn the most from the best in every topic. It was a full schedule, with any free time being little more than recess, which were also arranged. I never really minded, I love to learn and that was no different when I was four years old." She reminisces, her gaze drifting around the room. "Thus I had little company but those who taught me and worked here in my home… And the young daughter of a maid. Kumiko's mother had been working for the Yaoyorozu family for years, so Mother didn't even hesitate when she asked if she could bring Kumiko with her to work. Having no relatives that could look after her, she immediately accommodated for it. We were of approximately the same age, we got along well, and finally I had a reason to look forward to recess. A friend to play with..., all without interfering with my studies."

>"Aw…" Mina coos, this time adeptly dodging Kyoka's jab.

>"Quiet you!" Kyoka hushes her, making more noise than the pink girl.

"Sounds lovely, sugah. It really does." You can imagine lil' Momo playing with a little girl in a library… Building a book fort. For some reason, you are certain Momo has built one of those. "What happened?"

>"A type of congenital myocardosis, I believe thinking back. Kumiko's mother didn't reach her fiftieth birthday and so she was sent to live with her family." She says, her words chilling you your heart. Any and all warmth the imagery of lil' Momo and her friend invoked is cruelly ripped away, as Kumiko's mother is from her. "I've not seen her, nor heard from her in nine years."

>"My rigid schedule never changed. Didn't have time “allocated” for friends until junior high, and by then I didn't know how. I knew how to greet anyone young or old, from any family or position, but how do you approach a twelve year old girl and tell her what music you like? That you prefer Strauss? I was a lost cause, so I did what I had been doing all my life and threw myself back into my studies." Momo finishes, a hint of bitterness in her voice. She then sighs and looks over all of you once more with a small smile. "I've had many classmates since then, but you girls are my first friends in years… I believe that's what Mother meant, as tactlessly as she had put it. Replacing my old friend..."

There's only a brief pause before you all pile on her, hugging her from the front and both sides just as they had done for you at the beginning of school.
>>
>"Well, those guys were missing out then!" Mina says, hugging her front.

>"That's… pretty sad, but not something you have to hide. Not with us." Kyoka points out.

"Yeah. Ah guess no one can replace old friends…" You comment, despite not really having much experience in the matter. "But Ah know new ones are great."

For a couple of seconds it looks like that's all there's to the sad tale, but then Momo steps away from all of you, rubbing her arm in that stereotypical guilty way.

>"...But that's not the entire truth." She continues, now looking specifically at you. "I hope this doesn't change your opinion of me."

"Uh?" You utter, a bit puzzled by the notion. "Ah doubt you could manage that with just words, sugah!"

>"Kumiko's mother hailed from Hokkaido, a bovine mutant that migrated south." She tells you, entwining her fingers together, nervous, maybe even scared of your reaction. "Barring your sunkissed skin, I assume she would look somewhat similar to you now… And that was what I truly believe Mother meant. That I was replacing her with you."

That… Would explain a few things. The weirdly accurate headband back during your sleepover among them.

"Is it true?" You ask, more than a bit concerned.

>"No. I'll admit to finding your mutations interesting, but I have no nefarious motives." She declares, shaking her head. "I just so happen... I... Find your ears cute."

>What do you do?

I think we should all be breaking this down into a couple of components here.

1. Respond to Momo’s moment of openness and vulnerability and reassure her, and

2. Figure out how this new opinion on our ears affects our already complex emotional relationship with them.

For point one, I think for Momo’s sake we should keep the conversational focus on her. Answer her implied question (does this lower your opinion of me?) directly. We’ve already responded well to the rest of what she’s said, but pivoting the focus onto ourself feels weird anyways.

Ushi’s ears are an interesting topic. She’s been harassed about them as a kid, even to the point she tried to cut them off once, and they’re the most obvious bovine giveaway about her. Ushi’s not a person naturally inclined towards shame about herself, but she’s been shamed for this so much that she’s hid it away ever since, even through the bombastic self-actualization she’s been going through. I really don’t think one compliment is going to turn that around for her. It can certainly turn her attention to re-examining that decision though, and I think it should. All that said:

>[Just give her another hug and move on. Reassure her with your grace. "Well then, that's all Ah needed to hear!”

>[“That’s nothin’ we’d think any lessa’ya for. Yaomama should know better’n t’think ya’d try an’ swap out friends ‘caus’a somethin’ like that.”]

>[“Now let's head back and check on the boys."]

>[Wait, your ears?! You have been sure to keep them tucked away under your...in the locker room... of course.]

>[If you’re going to be the rising star for your people, you’re gonna have to be able to represent them without reservations. It’s dumb but it’s still scary. You’ll tie your hair back for the rest of the day and just... see how it goes. It’s just friends here.]

And lastly:
>+1RD with Momo.

Because c’moooooon... pretty please? Now feels like as good a time as any to me.

So that's how she knew to make her cow headband at the slumber party so realistic. I figured she had just done research on bovine mutations, not had a previous cow friend.

Nah so far only pony knows about the ear bullying. Of course the rest of the girls know about Ushi not having many friends but i don't remember if they know how bad Ushi got with her bullying.

Besides Jiro is herr if there is a right moment to talk about weird ears it's now.

I'd like a middle ground between
Aint human
and
Cute huh?
Something that invokes Ushi's very self-conscious of them (and looks to change the subject quickly much like Momo did previously with her stuff) while still opening the opportunity for a ponytail

Something along the lines of
>Dismiss the compliment "They ain't anything special,"
>make feel Momo not ashamed for admitting it "but Ah'm glad you told me all that. I hope you feel better for it. And this changes nothin' about how I see you, Prez"
>something else that opens up Ponytail

Honestly, would have gone for "Cute huh?" if it didn't seem so much like a direct /u/ rail-line.

Unless the assertion is ponytail=dyke...

How about something along the lines of "Glad someone does..."? Showing that Ushi is self-conscious about them but not going overly maudlin about it.

Projecting?
She is in a new place. She has friends. She has insecurities, yes, but she also is pretty comfortable around said friend. SHE WOULD BE ACCEPTING AND TRYING TO MOVE PAST IT because we arent in Texas anymore and the world is more than words from when she was a kid, and she understands her friend is being sincere. It is not "pushing a relationship" it's just a goddamn choice saying "maybe I will try to own this for myself."
Trying to spin it as "lol /u/" is fucking disingenuous. Like, it's a compliment.

Having insecurities and moving past it generally requires more than "hey, i like the thing your insecure about". such a thing would usually result in a "what? why? thing is terrible" because that's how insecurity works.

It's not good character development to just drop a trauma and go "oh i moved past it"
>>
>>4465670
idk, being willing to try something you're uncomfortable with in the presence of friends you trust doesn't feel like that long a walk. You'd be mortified if non-trusted parties saw, but people are generally more relaxed around close friends.
>>
>>4465679
Dude, people with body image issues feel bad about exposing it to their spouse or close family. Just being around friends won't flip a switch that makes someone go from not liking a thing to liking it.
It's not just "uncomfortable" it's active dislike.
>>
>>4465670
I still think Ushi biggest trauma is ger fear of fire, something that will never go away and has being showed to still cripple her from time to time.

Saying that i agree it takes more time and maybe more than just the talk from Pony and Momo saying she thinks Ushi ears are cute.

My hope with the ear thing is have the three girls here reafirm to Ushi thats he shouldn't be ashamed or afraid of showing part of her. So we cna ha e later a scene of her comming to school in a ponytail and turning some heads as she walks across the class with a new look.
>>
>>4465695
I think the fire thing is less trauma and more instinctual, or learned from our dad being a bit over cautious about it due to our wood. I don't think Ushi has ever mentioned a particular incident with fire.

as for showing up to school with a ponytail, that would be healing, but it does demand something to provoke it. It doesn't fit this moment of conversation to decide to show off something she's kept hidden from everyone just because 1 friend said something positive about it.
After Ushi mopes a bit, the other girls are all "no, you're beautiful" and Ushi has a think about it, such a choice would be warranted. But right now to even entertain wearing a ponytail would be a sudden and abrupt dropping of a character issue
>>
>>4465710
Yes i agree now is not the time to change toa ponytail. Afterward however it's okay.
>>
>>4465710
Mic wrote it as a response, so I would assume it is in character. All those choices have some part of her character to it. It's not like 'this is the objectively wrong choice.' I personally think after all this time and previous character development, it'd be natural for her to let something like this happen and drop a bit of her insecurity despite bring a bit of a sore spot, but others think contrary. And it's not dropping a character issue. Quite clearly it has some manner of the issue in the reply. I think it's a question of 'is she currently comfortable enough around her friends to try something like this?' And my answer is yes.
My own sticking point is mainly people going "No you just wanna duck momo that's why you're picking it" when really this choice is mostly of minor consequence yet somehow people are pointing to it like it's some sort of life changing crossroads where its NO ONE CHOICE WILL CHANGE EVERYTHING ABOUT HER CHARACTER.
>>
>>4465728
I can stay silent no longer, the reason I don't want a ponytail for Ushi is absolutely OOC and completely against who she is as a character, but I can't stand the hypocrisy any more!

I prefer the fluffy hair to a ponytail.
>>
>>4465728
Well it's perfectly valid for ushi to consider her traumas and insecurities and discard them. It doesn't mean it's satisfying.
also it would be either dropping or disregarding a character issue. It would be the same as if Someone was all "big bonfires are nice Ushi" and she responds with "oh, well I am afraid of fire, but I guess i'll go enjoy this big roaring blaze" just because the issue is mentioned and involved in the reply doesn't mean it's addressing it.
>>
>>4465738
It doesn't have to be a permanent thing.
>>
>>4465738
Fair.
>>
>>4465739
I mean... saying you'll go is not the same as being stoked. Like, your friends are going, you don't want to be left out. You could cower 50 yards away the whole time.

Peer pressure's a hell of a thing.
>>
>>4465743
I'd rather the fluffy hair be a permanent thing.
>>
>>4465738
This is completely reasonable.
>>
>>4465739
To me, those are different things, and one is actual, instinctual fear while as stated the other is an insecurity. They can be dealt with differently. And it's not like it's not building off other characterization and development, there has been a build up. It's not like it's a sudden change of heart.
And it's not like shes discarding them. They'll be there. Just because someone gets stage fright when they go on stage doesn't mean they cant power through it with encouragement from friends and family.
>>
>>4465738

That's fair. But you can change hair styles often.
>>
>>4465747
So is body image issues. People can feel shame over things their spouse has seen and said they loved a thousand times for a decade. to say that being lightly peer pressured could result in one showing off their secret shame kinda diminishes it being a body issue

That takes you aback, literally making you half-step away on reflex. Nothing good has ever come about concerning your ears.

“...Cute? They ain't human. Just freaky, fuzzy scarred things...” You say, bringing your hands up to your head, into the mess that is your hair and towards your ears, running your fingers down their fuzzy backs with locks of gold mixed in between to shelter them. Your fingers tell you they’re soft, but you can't be anything but unnerved by the feedback.

You know they have seen you naked in the locker room, so it shouldn't be a big deal to just lift your hair or show them for a day. Maybe even just until you get back to the auditorium. But you can see the somewhat concerned glance they all share and immediately mentally curse at yourself. So they hadn’t seen! The scars as they are, are far more noticeable on the back of the ear!!

>"...Well, I would respectfully disagree." Momo says, tentatively taking a step forward to match the prior proximity. "There's nothing wrong with showing what makes you unique. I know I would if I had any outstanding traits."

>"She does and she does." You hear Kyoka and Mina mutter to one another at that remark, with the former managing a grin almost as smug as the latter's. Momo either doesn't hear it or chooses to ignore it, just continuing to look at you with a mix of curiosity and worry.

Well… She just opened her heart and complimented you, it shouldn't be that hard to do this.

"You told me about Kumiko, so I guess a-ah could show you... G-gonna need some help to p-pull off a ponytail though…" You half stutter and half nervously laugh as you try to push a simple quip through while pulling your hair back and exposing your ears-

For about a second, immediately letting the fluffy mass engulf your head as you notice the three of them staring. Gawking, your dread goads inside your head. Nerves fraying, you let out a nervous chuckle and try to salvage the situation and your ego.

"Ha h-ha… Whoops…" You say as you shrug, encouraging your hair back into its enveloping and comforting arrangement. Quickly spouting the first excuse you can come up with, you babble out, "Ah-don't-have-any-scrunchies-with-me."

…That was the stupidest thing you could have said you dumb co-

>"I don't think I even own one of those." Kyoka immediately responds, quickly patting down her pockets as if searching for one. "Short hair, never needed it."

>"Yeah, same here." Mina adds, patting her own pockets and hair for good measure. "I used to get free ones tossed at my horns back in middle school though."

>"Alas, I'm afraid I don't have any spares on hand." Momo says, giving you a comforting smile. "Perhaps we could go shop for accessories at a later date?"
>>
There's no way any of them bought that, especially Momo... She can literally just make one in the time she replied… But they are all pretending they did.

"Yeah… Ah'd love that." You answer with a smile of your own as your anxiety retreats.

>"Very well then, let us finish our dessert and go back to studying!" Your host proclaims, and you all gladly comply.

Once that's done and you are all walking back to the auditorium, you slow down and approach Momo’s side.

"Sorry 'bout that… Shouldn't have made it about me, Ah should have been focusin' on supportin' you." You tell her, as hushed as you can.

>"Oh? Don't worry about that." She whispers back. While she starts with a solemn look, she does finish with a clearly happy and relieved smile. "I certainly hope to find Kumiko and see what fate has dictated for her, I even asked Mrs. Chiyoko to keep an eye out for her… But that heartache was subdued long ago. I'm just glad Mother's careless words didn't cost me your friendship."

You don't know who that is, but you are more interested in the rest of what she said.

"Trust me sugah, it'll take more than carelessness to get rid of me." You tell her, then pat your abdomen, still feeling some rather angry feedback for consuming those cookies. "...But her cooking might do it. Feel free to write-up mah eulogy if that happens."

While it wasn't 100% a joke, you are glad when you see her cover her mouth and chuckle at that, only then realizing you are at your destination.

>"Shh…" Kyoka says, stopping your fun as she listens to whatever is happening inside the auditorium. "I don't think they are studying in there…"

>"Psst. Let's bust them then!" Mina says, opening the door just a bit and looking inside. "Oh. Boring."

Piling atop each other to peer in, you don't really see anything suspicious inside, just two boys staring at a notebook as they hold a very serious conversation.

>"Plan C." Kaminari says, his voice loaded with the grim determination you only thought you’d hear in old war movies when someone is about to go on a suicide mission. "It'll all depend on that pivotal moment. It will be boom or bust."

>"The noise will give it away though." Sero retorts, sporting a grimace that looks amazingly close to his signature grin flipped on its head. "No way no one will hear it."

>"I know, I know…" Denki responds, deep in thought. Where was that during the studying?! "Maybe we can get someone from the Support Course to whip you up a tool, Sero? I'm thinking about something like a silencer."

"Ooh… Ah know some-" You try to comment, but are immediately interrupted by a hushing Kyoka, peering into the room from under Mina, who in turn peeks from under you.

>"A silencer, huh." Sero mutters, seemingly considering it. "You know, that could be all kinds of useful." If they were planning a heist, it wouldn't sound all that different…
>>
>"What even are they talking about?" Mina whispers, her fluffy hair tickling your chin something fierce. "What's "Plan C"...?"

>"Sounds like new costumes so far, maybe just that?" Kyoka suggests.

>"It hardly feels right to burst into the room at this moment." Momo whispers back while peeking over you. Her chest presses surprisingly firmly on your back, making it hard to keep your balance. Mina likely is in a similar situation, but she seems a lot more sure-footed.

>"There's a few issues that need to be hammered out before moving forwards." Denki continues, giving a fine imitation of Deku. "First, how to silence your tape. Then, coordinating the perfect timing we'll need… Finally, a clean way to destroy all evidence in case this whole thing goes sideways… I sure wish we could use Ashido for this."

You can feel Mina gasp at that, but it's Kyoka's reaction further down is the first one to catch your attention.

>"...Oh, this dumb <motherfucker>." She mutters, surprising you, Mina and Momo.

>"But once we get that sorted, this'll get me to the camp for sure…" Kaminari "And "Plan C" is a bit less suspicious than openly saying ‘cheating’, too."

You can feel Momo's reaction to that. Not metaphorically or anything like that, her dropping jaw hits you right between the horns, and she seems to take a step forwards, considering the way her chest pushes you in kind.

Being top heavy and in a precarious position, you are not surprised when you collapse into a heap with the other girls, stumbling through the entrance and slamming the door open.

>"Bwah!?" Denki blurts, clearly surprised as Sero quickly starts scooting as far away from the blond boy as he can.

>"Come again?" Momo says as she stands up with far more grace than you can manage, her voice sounding somewhere between hurt, disappointment and anger. "Please, tell me I heard that wrong, Kaminari!"

>"Wanted me to destroy evidence, huh? What, and make me your accomplice? No dirty little "C"s here!" Mina yells at them, shimmying out from under you and standing up, puffing out her chest and cheeks. "We are all here melting out brains and you plan to do this? You guys suck!"

>"I knew you were dumb, but not… this dumb. Really." Kyoka chides them from the floor, still under you. She doesn't even try to escape. "Actually, I really expected better from you, Sero."

>"H-He got all serious and inspiring and… I got roped into it." Sero says, first pleading, then realizing his mistake and groaning.

>What do you do?

While you aren't as mad as the rest of the gals, you are still going to give them a piece of your mind-

>"But I just can't learn anymore!" Denki pleads, and you can briefly see tears welling at his eyes before he hangs his head low, letting his hair cover his eyes. "...Cheating is the only way I can pull it off."

...But it's hard to see it as something malicious. Amazingly stupid, considering what would happen when he gets caught? Certainly, but he's just grasping at straws, trying to salvage what seems to him like an impossible situation.

Seeing him like that, Momo crouches to meet his gaze.

>"Tell me, Kaminari…" She asks, a steely look in her eyes. "Did you have to cheat to get into U.A.?"

>"What? N-no way! I mean… I just scraped by…" The boy answers, sounding a bit indignated. "But I passed that entrance exam fair and square!"

>"Then you can certainly manage these, too." Your host tells him, staring straight into his eyes. "You are quite capable when you put your mind to the task at hand."

Denki is one of those people you always see with an easy-going smile, cracking jokes and giving compliments to get a reaction out of a pretty girl… To see him at the verge of tears, so clearly moved by a vote of confidence is unsettling. But move him, her words do, dispelling the despair in his expression.

"Yeah! Come on, Sparky. Don't make me do the speech about how 'if you put half as much effort into actually studying'. Heck, you just need the same kind of focus you had a couple minutes ago when y'all were schemin'!" You tell him, crouching besides Momo and giving him a warm smile. It would have been easy to berate him for the career ending scheme he planned to pull, but you are in the business of helping people.

>"We'll need to change our approach, but I truly believe in you!" Momo assures him as her hard stare melts away into a soft, encouraging smile. You can't feel anything but genuine, compassionate support radiating from her.

His eyes dart between the two of you for a second before he wipes his eyes dry.

>"...Thank you." He whispers before standing upright, a hopeful look to his small smile. "I'll put in the effort! Just you watch!"

>"That's the spirit, Kaminari!" Momo cheers with a small, classy applause.

"Talkin's nice, but let's see you do it!" You tell him, letting your smile morph into a smirk. "Get back to those books before Ah make ya eat another one of Yaomama's cookies!"

>"Camp for everyone!" Mina says, raising her arms. "You guys can't even imagine how much I wanna do the test of courage!"

>"Yeah man, we'll all get through this!" Sero cheers him on, patting him on the back.

"Yeah, Ah didn't forget 'bout you, pal." You say, approaching the plain looking boy and throwing an arm around his neck and forcing him to crouch as you hold him in a simple headlock, taking care not to suffocate him against your chest. "No more cheatin' either, 'kay?"

"Good boy." You tell him as you release him with a headpat, allowing him to go grab a cold cup of tea to not choke on the crumbs.

Helping feels nice, doling out punishment also feels very nice.

Huddling with your classmates and friends at the table, you burn the rest of the afternoon and a few hours of the night getting Kaminari the help he needed without leaving the rest unattended. Flashcards are made and new exercises are drafted as the quizzes slowly become a game, pulling flashcards off your new decks and answering as fast as possible.

The one time that Denki's sight drifted slightly to the side into someone else's notebook, Kyoka immediately took the chance to do as you did and stuffing a particularly large cookie down his throat.

It was okay though, before you left, Uchimura and the maids brought the rest of the cake, along with more tea.

While you can't be sure until the results are in, Kaminari left the mansion competent and confident, and that's a lot better than how he was when you all entered.

Thus you arrive back to Momma's house with a full tummy and a smile on your face, happy to have helped and to have had spent time with your friends.

>"Look who decided it was time to come home." You hear your uncle Rik quip as you open the door.

The next thing you hear is either the air getting squeezed out of your lungs or your Momma's heartbeat as she lifts you off the ground in a hug.

>"She was out studyin' and makin' connections, ain't that right hun?" She asks, putting you down.

"Ah call 'em friends, but that fits too, Ah guess." You answer, adjusting your dress once again. It's amazingly comfy for something so frou-frou.

>"Dressed like that?" Uncle Rik asks, pointing at your dress and prompting you to raise an eyebrow.

"Somethin' wrong with mah dress?" You ask, prepared to defend it. "Mah friend gave it to me, it felt right to wear it today."

>"Nothin', just not what I'd wear for an actual studying session." He answers with a shrug, taking a sip out of a can.

>"Yep, I can assure you he was NOT going to study when he put on a dress." Momma tells you with a mischievous smile that quickly turns into a roaring laughter as Rik chokes on his drink and starts having a coughing fit.

You just stand there by the door for a few seconds, not sure of what to do. There's a soft smell of booze coming from Momma, but it doesn't smell like she had more than a drink or two. Uncle Rik though? No alcohol, despite having an open can besides him as he hits his own chest in an attempt to stop coughing. Maybe a Zero Alcohol beer? Strange.

>"Sorry 'bout that, hun." Momma tells you after she regains her composure, patting your head and running her fingers through your hair. "Tell me, how did it go?"

Now that we finally that die out of the way, we can focus down to the delayed dice for Tin and family/Momma.

Looking back on your day, you did quite a bit… Mostly walking, talking and reading, but you can't understate how important the people you spent that time with are to you. One in particular this time, the girl who has had your back for a while, who invited you all into her home, and spoke of old heartaches just so you wouldn't be concerned.

"Well, Ah got to know ‘bout Momo some more while studyin'. Ah keep findin' common ground," you tell your Momma and uncle. A warm smile breaks out on your face as you reflect on the study session and the kitchen talk on the whole. "Made it really easy to work with her and help everyone else!"

>"Young Yaoyorozu? Oh my, that's good to hear." Momma comments, her tail waving approvingly behind her. "It's never bad to be close to the rich and powerful."

>"Didn't think you'd encourage her to be like that, Kat." Uncle Rik says while raising a bushy eyebrow. "Kid's been doing pretty fine without ridin’ coattails...or courtin' brands."

>"Oh no, no! Believe me when I say if she tries to force you to do anything you don't want, tell her to hit the road just like any other filth!" Your mom’s tail briefly whips around before she takes a deep breath and forcibly relaxes her posture. "...Sorry. I'm just happy you have a good friend in that girl. She seems to have a good head on her shoulders. In more ways than one."

>"Ushi’s doing better than all of us already!" Your uncle states… And you can't really tell if he's grinning or grimacing as he takes another sip of his drink.

>"I know you are new to the whole thing, but that's kinda the whole point of being a parent. She's supposed to have it better than me, to get further in life and goals." Momma boasts before pulling you up and into another hug. "And you are doing great, hun. Great pals and great grades at a great school… Wish it'd be safer, but accidents happen."

"Thanks, but Ah've not passed the exams just yet." You tell her with a bashful smile somewhat concealed in her grapple. While you like it in general, praise from her makes you a little bit nervous about it all, more than anything else this past week. You also choose not to comment on the safety or lack thereof at the school. At this point, the next attack could be an accident or a test or even a mix of both and you wouldn't be surprised.

>"I just know you'll do well, hun." She says, ruffling your hair before walking back to the kotatsu, freeing the way to the stairs. Thus, the main bathroom and your room beyond as well. "Now go hit the hay. You don't want to fall asleep at your desk tomorrow!"

She's right and you plan on getting a good, restful sleep to allow all that studying to settle in your head… After a couple of questions, of course.

"Say, Uncle Rik… Ah know it's a bit of a long shot, but would you happen to know a bovine gal named Kumiko from your time up north?" You ask him, fully aware of how unlikely that is. But you owe Momo to at least try.

He seems to think about it a great deal more than you were expecting, getting your hopes up.

>"A cow called Kumiko?… I can recall getting to... know, at least three, and I'm dang sure I’ve forgotten some. It's not exactly an exotic name." He finally answers with a shrug. "Why?"

"Mah friend had a bovine pal that lost her momma to a heart condition, so she was sent up north to live with her relatives." You give him and your momma the cliff notes of Momo's tale, trying to keep any personal details private. "So, she'd be about mah age? Does that help?"

Your uncle takes a moment to wipe his mouth with his wrist, wincing when he brushes against the flat bandages still covering the middle of his face.

>"Kinda, in a way. That should be too young for my work, so I wouldn't know." He says, looking away.

>"Poor little thing…" Momma laments, ears dropping flat. "Can't imagine what it'd be like coming in from the south..."

"Well, there's lots of north… She didn't have to end up at a farm, right?" You suggest, trying not to think too much about it.

>"That's possible. Not likely, but I reckon it's possible." Momma replies, but her tail tells you she’s not very convinced. "If she was sent up north to be with family, it's more likely she ended up in a closed bovine commune than in Sapporo."

>"Or maybe she likes whatever farm she landed at." Rik proposes, still looking at the far wall. "It's a pretty good life if you don't plan on anythin' in particular. Safe and easy..."

>What do you do?

>[That's… weird. Not funny weird, but suspicious weird. Maybe it's time to ask some questions. "What's her age gotta do with your work?"]

>"…What do you think of me, as in my looks?" You ask, crossing your arms and smiling up at him, nervously twirling a lock of your hair.

>In the time it takes you to blink, you are hit with the all too familiar shockwave of a sonic boom, shaking your uniform, throwing your hair back and making the classroom windows audibly wobble. It's actually impressive how much control he has, since nothing broke.

>"I AM NOT HERE!" You hear All Might's voice coming from outside the classroom and easily a hundred feet down the hall already. "...ANYMORE!"

New to this story and just got around to reading this part. Had to stop by and say that this is unironically the best part so far. Somehow managed to be hilarious and completely in character for All Might.

Following Rik’s response, you take a second to scan the room. You take in the traditionally huge bottle of sake and a can of… ‘Fizzy’ juice?, on the kotatsu in front of your momma and uncle respectively. But the most important thing for your intentions is what you don't see, as little Angus is nowhere in sight. With the clock crawling past midnight, it's not surprising that the six year old boy is already sleeping, but you still would have liked to wish him a good night.

Even so, it's an opportunity to ask some uncomfortable questions.

“Sure, safe and easy… So why did’ya take Angus away only now? 'nd’ why isn’t his momma with ya’ll too? Ah'm not takin’ issue with ya, but if you are here to tell me this, then…" You hesitantly ask, unsure about how to put it. "Well, then Ah reckon it can't be that good.”

The adults in the room silently look at each other for a tense moment, almost as if they were asking the other what to do. You are about to break the silence and clarify to get some sort of answer, but your momma breaks it first. She grabs the bottle and taking a swig, loudly gulps a good amount of the liquor.

>"Arright. Go ahead." She says, wiping her mouth with her wrist while motioning to your uncle.

>"Huh." Your uncle spouts, looking at his sister once more. "How much have you told her?"

>"Enough." She answers, physically shrinking away from the topic. Literally. Not that you can blame her. You have managed to glean some bits and pieces of her youth in Hokkaido, and you didn’t like what you heard.

>"...To be honest, I think I took too long getting out." Rik starts, clearly thinking the next part of his answer through. "The farms… Well, communes actually, they started as a closed, fortified community during the dark ages. Keep our kin together, to avoid getting slaughtered further."

"Yeah..." You interject with a slow nod. To think this is little more than a footnote in your history textbook. "Not many mutants groups did that, Ah think... some sea folk did it too?"

>"Crabs, the lobster people joined later." Your uncle clarifies, then shakes his head, likely realising the shift in the conversation. "But they opened up over a decade ago. And that's kind of the point… Look around, heck, the fact that you are trainin' in a high school to be a hero is proof enough! The world isn't anarchy and chaos anymore. The Farms are slowly fraying at the edges. There's no real need for a safe haven for cows and bulls, us, anymore. So it was better to leave. No need to raise Angus in a place that offers the bare minimum… and doesn't even have a highschool."

"...And his momma? Where's mah aunt? Why isn't she with Angus?" You persist. It is an innocent, slightly worried question, but both of them look like you just stabbed them. Your uncle recovers in a fraction of a second while your momma just tilts her head and lets her gradient hair hide her face.
>>
You see your uncle reach for your mother's bottle, taking it from her and raising it as if about to drink,... then puts it down by the side of his chair.

>"...She ain't coming, kid." He tells you with a sigh, sadness clear in his dark eyes. For the first time, he looks like the older sibling, maybe even older than his real age. Even without further details, you can tell it weighs on him. "So yeah, you're right there. It ain't that good."

You aren't sure how to respond to that. Maybe offer your condolences? Apologize for pressuring him? Run upstairs and hug the sleeping Angus until you yourself enter dreamland? Cry?

>"Of course it isn't." Your momma says, her words beginning to tumble on one another. "Might do the same if Ah’m ever brought back…"

You almost don't notice your uncle's clenching fist, the noise of his nails scratching the kotatsu's wooden top being the only thing that betrays his frozen face. A forlorn expression that somewhat reminds you of a close friend. In the same moment, you manage to make the wood in your neck creak audibly as you complete a double take from staring in horror at your mom to locking eyes with your uncle, then back at your Ma. Did she just-!?

It's something you don’t think about, your body just does it, rushing to her and hugging her. Sitting down, her head is just low enough for you to push against your chest. You just don't know what else to do, but couldn't just do nothing either.

>What do you do?

That's pretty fucking bad but at least it's not Mina's situation where her mother is a half-insane hedonist intent on plunging Japan into civil war on behalf of the liberation army. Has Chitose and her cbt fuckboy sqaud been adressed yet? Does Mina know? Does anybody else think it's suspicious that Mina's coat has the same fluff as her mother's and the same material as OG Destro? Do you wonder why Kaminari and Sero were taking about tape silencers and mentioned Mina destoying evidence as part of the plan? Are the traitors getting ready to make thier move?

The stench of the rice liquor emanating from your mom burns your nose worse than any moonshine. You normally wouldn't have hesitated to give her flack for it but you know better than to bring that up, nor do you feel like doing so, right now. It's better to embrace the burn you think, the discomfort distracts you from the gloomy atmosphere of the room that you unwittingly helped create. The gloom that threatens to now choke you if you continue to dwell on it.

"'s that when you and Angus got out of dodge? ...Or did somethin' else happen?" You ask quietly, shifting your hug a bit. While you can't imagine what else could have occured, you didn't imagine that either, so it doesn't mean much. If anything, that it could be even worse.

>"...Kinda. Nothin' just happens in a vacuum… I just couldn't stay there anymore, feelin' responsible for it all and left as soon as I could." Your uncle sighs heavily and stops just short of sliding his hand down his face, wincing at the edge of the bandages. "Angus didn't take it well at the start. Can't blame the calf though, I took him away from everything and everyone he ever knew for a surprise cross-country trek."

"That's gotta be tough…" You comment, looking at the floor as you try to imagine how frightening it must have been for the poor boy before looking back up to your uncle. Try as you might, you are not really able to imagine what he felt. Maybe that he could have done more for her? You've read in passing that people blame themselves for things like that...but ‘responsible for it all’?

>"It was the right call. There's nothin' good left for him there." Your momma asserts, returning your hug and ringing her bell with your horn as she holds you close. Close enough that you can pick up her usual comforting scent under the haze of alcohol. "We'll be here to help you with the little guy when you need it. God knows I miss havin' someone to cuddle 'nd coddle, since my own little calf is too grown up for that."

"First, don't call me that." You pout in an overly exaggerated manner. You are pretty sure this is not the time for teasing jokes, but you still need to do something to push against the gloom. "...And nah. Ain't no age too old for that."

You don't want to tarry much longer with them knowing that you have important exams tomorrow, but you still can't leave them to mope alone, so you go pick up a can of coke from the fridge and get to changing the topic with haste. You start telling them about your day, about your friends, their antics, the cookies and Denki's mad scheme to cheat in a top hero school.

>"Call'd it!" Your momma comments at that last point, far more mellow but no less tipsy and making your uncle chortle. "Told ya he look'd like a snake!"

"He was just desperate! Cut him some slack!" You defend the ironically dim boy. But overall you are quite pleased in the changed mood in the room.
>>
>"Not buyin' it." She says, shaking her head and ringing her bell. "That's the kinda boy that'll just say anythin' to get what he wants. Keep an eye on him 'nd don't let him in closer than you can toss him."

>"Does that mean the closest wall or the other side of Japan?" Your uncle asks, chuckling. "Dunno if you've looked at her, but I don't think anyone can get closer to her than she wants."

Hearing that, you proudly raise your arms and flex, getting your uncle to point at you as he looks at your mom.

>"Oh, I'm not worried 'bout that, it's pretty words from some softie that'll confuse her." Your mom bemoans, reaching for her sake bottle, but your uncle just pushes it a couple inches away from her reach. "Hey, I bought that…"

"Gee, thanks." You pretend to be offended for a second and stick out your tongue at her.

While you hope she's wrong, it wasn't long ago that you used to aggressively flirt to avoid having to deal with that kind of stuff altogether.

While you leave to start your bedtime routine after making sure your ma is okay and hugging your uncle, they continue talking into the night.

Leaving your home and half your family behind… You know you'll see the ranch and your cattle when the time's right, and you know you'll see your Pa soon enough, no matter who has to fly half across the world to make it happen and yet… And yet you still dearly miss it all, to be together with both of your loving parents in the home you grew up in.
You don't want to dwell on how it'd feel to lose that and never be able to have it back.

It can't be easy for them, but you'll gladly do what you can to help them.

Even as you bathe and dive into bed, you keep thinking of those communes up north, actual farms of bovine mutants. There's not much you can do about that now… But one day you'll be able to. All the reach and resources of a top hero… You'll show them there's no reason to hide anymore, a peaceful world guarded by one like them where they can do whatever they desire without being treated like objects and you won't have to check the back of milk boxes to make sure it's from an actual animal and not a girl that couldn't get another job if she tried.

It'll all be better. You'll make it better.

>What do you do?

Maybe we can help with English! I'm pretty sure that's the one thing in this class we can claim to be the absolute expert of in our class, even given how intelligent our peers are.

I’m always a slut for random encounters which provide opportunities for bonding and characterization!

I don’t even really care if we succeed or fail, either way something would happen, I assume some form of courage roll to handle it.
