/qst/ - Quests

Sorry about the late start this evening gents, things have been... sort of odd today, haha. Nothing bad, just strange- and unfortunately, time-consuming. Think we're good now though. Hope so, anyway! Old friends can be strange to catch up with when you haven't talked in years.

Anyway, archive here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%202016

And discord here: https://discord.gg/j59TJs

And I think that's it!

========================================================================

Trusting your judgement- that Wendy was no moderating influence on Kyou, and that you had to separate the two of them from Merlin and that doctor- you've returned to quarters. Kyou pouted a little- though you doubt any but you or Wendy would have noticed it. Not that you can't sympathize a little. There's not much for you to do here, afterall, and you're not technically on leave, either. It's one of the bizarre quirks of the Wyvern squadron- while all crews have long periods of complex overhaul and maintenance time built into their deployment schedules, and doubly so for you as a dedicated combat test crew, you're also expected to be able to do whatever the navy needs you to at the drop of a hat- or within forty eight hours of them telling you where to go.

Even in cases like this- where Muninn's forward fuselage is being supported by a massive cradle apparatus as they effectively gut the lower half of the forward fuselage in order to mount the monstrous Yellowstone cannon, you're not on leave. Instead you're expected, in this case, to be available as an 'extra' pilot, available to fly around VIPs or anyone the navy or base commander is trying to impress in a trainer. Trainers are, you're told, the exception to the usual rule about MIU pilots- especially since you do have more then a little time behind the controls of the red hawk- and there's two of those here, their white and red paint hardly standing out against Muninn's chrome coloration.

You're watching something on CNN- which seems to waffle back and forth between the war in Korea and the upcoming election, most of their coverage on the second front a nonstop litany of the various outrageous sayings and doings of the republican candidate. You're not much a fan of the man, but you're not a big fan of his opponent either, and silently you're almost glad you're kind of beyond them anyway- even if the budget of the wyvern program is slashed, you're effectively set already.

Though it would be a shame to stop flying, you have to admit.

>>
The droning of the TV is interrupted by the phone's ringing- one of the anachronisms of the place is the wall phone. Catering as it does to Wyvern crews, the upper decks of the building were apparently furnished with the assumption no one there would have a cell phone of any real use. You get up to get it- it's in the middle of the third ring when you pick up. "Oui?" You say.

"Hey bro." Christina- Tabitha's other daughter, Anastasia's sister- says from the other end of the line. "Heard you were back at Miramar."

"Oui, we are." You respond.

"Mind if I drop by for a while to catch up?" She asks- Christina's always been a bit more polite about her demands on your time. "Haven't had a chance in a while and I can't let Cass get all the attention."

You laugh. "Tryin to usurp her, eh?"

"As if she stands a chance." Christina says, joking. "Anyway, it cool or not?"

[x] Sure, come on over. I'm sure Kyou'd like to meet you.

"Sure, come on over." You say, causing Kyou and Wendy to look back at you. "I'm sure Kyou would love to meet you."

"That's your SIO, right?" Christina asks.

"Oui." You respond. "I'll let her know you're on the way."

"I'll be by in about twenty. I'm on base now, but I've got to finish up a few things here before I can head over."

You nod, though you know she can't see the gesture. "Sounds good." You say, and she hangs up.

Kyou looks at you curiously as you return to the couch. "One of my sisters." You explain. "Christina."

"Ah. One I've not met, then." She says, nodding. "She is Tabitha's other daughter?" You nod.

"Oh, it will be lovely to see her again." Wendy says, smiling. "Shall I put on tea?"

You laugh at the joke. Christina, among your sisters, is perhaps the most... patriotic? You'd call her an Ameriboo, but you're not sure the term even applies- you're pretty sure she had a crush on at least one of the founding fathers at one point or another. Possibly more. Your biggest concern is that she's getting involved with the current election- it's not something you really care to deal with, especially not with her- she, alone of your sisters, holds a political science degree and loves to use it, with a YouTube channel and a reasonable twitter following, to boot. You don't follow anything she does- she likes to present herself as being from a real working class, military family. It's one of those things Maman always made sure you and Elizabeth were aware of- Maman was military, as both you and Elizabeth were expected to be- but you've had it incredibly good, with both old money and an excellent family name in the service. Maman, of course, also refused to enroll either of you in private schools, which you think helped to keep you grounded.

"What should I know about her?" Kyou asks. "I feel as if all your sisters are something like handling live explosives. Except perhaps Cassiopeia, but it's apparent her quirks weren't an issue after she met Hohiro. "

[x] She's very... American. It's hard to explain.

You hesitate for a minute, not quite sure how to explain your sister to Kyou. "She's very... American." You say. "It's hard to explain."

Kyou raises an eyebrow. "Is that so?" She asks, then smiles. "Though that's hardly out of the ordinary for your sisters, I'm finding."

You nod- she's not wrong. "She said she'd be here in about twenty minutes." You say, standing up to change- you'd gotten out of your duty uniform as quickly as possible, but you've little desire to greet one of your sisters dressed in a pair of old gym shorts that have served ably since high school- they're good luck, you're convinced- and a T-shirt that's been around since at least 2000. That it still fits is some form of magic in and of itself- you haven't exactly bulked up that much, but enough that some of your other shirts are far too tight across the shoulders and chest to be comfortable any more.
Kyou nods, then smiles. "I suspect we should change as well?" She asks- both she and Wendy dressed down somewhat, and though they're wearing shorts under their too-long tshirts, it's not evident at all that they are.

You shrug. "Chris is a witch." You respond. "She'll understand."

"Still, better than I not be dressed quite so poorly." Kyou responds.

You shrug again before stepping into the bedroom, pulling out a pair of jeans and a decent shirt from the one drawer you keep. You walk back out to the living room with your socks in your hand, sitting down on the couch to pull them on as Kyou and Wendy both head back to change. They step out a few minutes later in clothing that's still casual, but not quite as casual as they had been. They're still in shorts short enough that they may as well not be there, of course- as witches that's normal- but their shirts aren't quite so long... nor quite as sheer.

There's a knock at the door about ten minutes later, and you open it to find your sister standing there, a six pack of beer in one hand and a couple of bags of chips in the other. She still manages to hug you. "Big bro!" She says, smiling. "Good to see you. Anywhere I can put this?" She lets you go and indicates the beer. "I was going too get something else, but I was kind of in a hurry."

You shake your head, taking the beer- it's bud, of course, but in Christina's case, that's more an indicator of haste than anything else. "Were you afraid you'd miss dinner?"

She laughs, following you into the kitchen to drop the chips off. "I didn't know I was invited."

"Don be lyin ta me." You respond, laughing. "Wendy an Kyou be in de living room. I be in in a second."

"Wait, Aunt Wendy is here too?" Christina looks at you critically for a second. "Really?"

And that's gonna be it for the evening! I'd intended to do one more update, but got caught out by a phone call- sorry about that. I don't think it'll happen again? Not sure, but I hope not.. kinda awkward. Ah well.

Anyway, that's it for the evening gents. I'll be around a bit at least, but probably not more than 20-30 minutes. I'll try and answer any questions in that time period, but otherwise, till tomorrow, cheers!

[x] Easier to explain when all of us are in there.

You hesitate a little- Christina is more traditional in her opinions than many of your sisters, never quite approving the arrangement your Father's family has. "Easier to explain when all of us are in there. Drink?" You respond.

She frowns, but nods. "Yeah, you got coke here?"

You nod, handing her a can and gesturing for her to lead out of the kitchen. She scowls a little, but pops the tab on her can of coke and steps out.

You step past her and into the living room, both Kyou and Wendy looking back at you, with the TV on, but turned down. Chris frowns as she looks over them a the TV- they're doing some coverage of Clinton again- and from the look on her face, you assume Chris isn't a fan.

You hope to avoid the topic of politics with her, hurrying to introduce her before she can say anything. "Chris, this is my backseat, Sho-sa Kyou, IJN." You say. Kyou bows her head to your sister, though she waits for you to finish introductions before speaking. "Kyou, this is my sister, Lieutenant commander Christina Bishop, USN." You pause for a second. "And you already know Wendy."

Chris smiles. "Of course. Hi aunt Wendy!"

"Hello, Christina!" Wendy replies, smiling back. "Wonderful to see you again!"

"An honor to meet you." Kyou says, smiling. "It's a pity it's taken as long as it has."

Chris' smile gets a little thinner. "I was busy a couple months ago back east." She responds. "And with the war on, It's pretty hard to find free time."

"Indeed." Kyou says, nodding. "Please, be seated. I'm eager to talk with one of my pilot's sisters."

Chris looks torn. She recognizes the statement for what it is, of course- Kyou's tone of regal command isn't exactly harsh or pronounced, but it's very apparent she's used to being in charge- but at the same time, it's one of those 'commands' that's also simply good manners, even if phrased a bit more forcefully than you'd expect otherwise.

1/2
>>
"It's nice to meet you too, Kyou." Chris says, perhaps deliberately ignoring both Kyou's rank and her noble station- probably entirely deliberately, honestly. It's rude, but it's also entirely in keeping with her convictions, you know- Chris is very much a believer in the statement 'all men were created equal', and so has little patience for nobility of any kind. What makes that as funny as it is, at least to you, is that she's a direct lineal descendant of the Tzars of imperial Russia.

"So Aunt Wendy, what brings you here?" Christina asks. "I'd heard you were flying for aunt Merlin, some secret project of hers?"

Wendy nods. "Somewhat secret, yes." She admits. "I'm not sure what all I can say, it was indicated to me it's all somewhat hush-hush."

"Rumor says it's called Valkyrie." Chris says. "And that it's gonna replace strikers in fleet service."

Wendy blinks, looking at you for a second. You shrug- the RUMINT network has always been pretty extensive and quick moving. She nods after a pause. "It is known as valkyrie, but I can't possibly comment on the second of those statements." She says.

Chris smiles. "Knowing aunt Merlin it is. So you're attached to these two for combat testing?"

"Of a sort." Wendy agrees, nodding. "I'm currently attached to them for the remained of our careers."

"I see." Chris says. "So like Dad, then?"

"After a fashion." Wendy admits, flushing a little.

"The MIU gives little option." Kyou interjects. "When one is so closely bound to their teammates, such things are inevitable."

Chris shrugs. "Just as well I plan to avoid it." She says. "I rather like my freedom of choice, thank you very much."

"Speaking of," You say, jumping in before it leads to any injured feelings, "You're the guest, what do you want for dinner?"

Chris smiles at that. "Like you even have to ask?" She says, and you laugh.

"I've got a couple pounds of ground beef and the stuff for some burgers." You say. "Not gonna be too crazy though, just meat and cheese on a bun."

"Perfect." Chris responds, laughing, before turning back to Wendy. "So you're flying with Morgan and Kyou, then, auntie?"

Wendy nods. "It's quite a good arrangement, really." She says. "The valkyrie was designed to partner with the Wyvern, and can match it in most aspects, except firepower, of course. And despite the challenge, I don't know if any other witch could have quite kept up with your brother and the lady Kyou in the air."

Christina laughs. "Got Dad's talent, huh?"

Wendy nods. "I should think so." She says. "Not quite his skill, not yet, but certainly his talent."

That gets a pause out of your sister- who shoots a look your way. "Huh. I never would have expected to hear you say that, aunt Wendy."

Wendy laughs lightly, but nods. "There have been some personal changes, I must admit." She says.

"So, you been following the election at all?" Christina asks you. You shake your head.

[x] Been too busy to bother.

You shake your head. "Been too busy to bother." You say.

Christina frowns. "Too busy?" She asks, sounding aghast. "To learn about the issues to vote for the president?"

You nod. "Yes. We've been at the front since the war started, and we were over the mideast before that."

"I heard about that!" Chris says. "Rumor said you were flying with some marine witch that got shot to pieces."

Kyou nods, smiling. "Captain Spears. And yes, she was badly injured." She confirms. "But her talent was a form of self-healing. She was back in the air the next day."

"But she still got shot up, right?" Christina asks. "I mean, I guess if she's a regenerative talent- wait, you said Captain?"

You nod. "Marine corps." You say. "She's got one of auntie Merlin's valkyries now."

"Huh." Chris says. "So the corps is getting them too?"

You nod. "Yeah, they're department of the navy-wide." You say. "And the IJN's adopting the wyvern and valkyrie, but they're license building theirs."

"There's a shock." she says, frowning. "Kinda surprised obummer declared war so fast. Knowing him he was looking for a way to weasel out of it. Even more surprised he let the sale go ahead. Hasn't he been blocking it for both his terms?"

"And every president before him back to Clinton." You say- the official policy having been the MIU equipped Wyvern is not for export, and the standard version doesn't offer enough performance for it's price point. While the MIU and associated AI is shockingly expensive, the Wyvern itself is probably three times the cost of a king raptor without it- and probably not three times as effective. It's one of the things that kept the air force from adopting the wyvern, citing that, owing to their mission, they couldn't afford to spend that kind of money on so few airframes. Of course, the B-2 and B-1W aren't much cheaper than a Wyvern themselves- and the fleets of both are pretty limited, so to you it just looks like wounded pride. The air force doesn't want to adopt the Wyvern because they don't want to admit a navy fighter is better than anything they've developed.

Christina nods. "Yeah, but he's been really bad about it." She insists. "Like, I'm sure he's done a lot of damage to our reputation with our allies." She looks over at Kyou, as if it's a question.

Kyou looks blank. "Typically my family prefers to keep ourselves removed from politics." She says simply.

Chris frowns- but doesn't push the subject. "I guess this is a bad topic." She says, after a second. "So how's everyone? You talked to Cass lately?"

"Why?" You ask, smiling. "Worried?"

"What, that she'll steal you away from me? Hardly." Chris says. "As if her pathetic attempts can ever overcome my charms." She flips her hair dramatically away from her face, then laughs. "No, I just haven't heard from her since this kicked off. I know she's ok, we'd have heard if she was injured, but I know the Kaga's air group was in the middle of it."

You nod. "We were aboard." You say.

Chris blinks. "You were?" She asks. "They let a drake fly off an IJN deck?"

You nod again. "Oui." You respond. "We were aboard till about three days ago, when we were cycled back here for overhaul. Cass is doing fine, she was flying with the Kaga's witches."

"Mostly combat air patrols for the fleet." Kyou supplies. "the Kaga's conventional wing bore the brunt of the combat over land."

"She must have been going stir-crazy, then." Christina notes. "Cass has never been the kind to sit things like that out."

You nod. "Probably worse now, she's in the imperial cabins aboard. They're just nice enough to drive her slowly crazy."

"Imperial cabins?" Chris asks. "That's stupid. Why waste the space? MacArthur had the right idea when he said we should have pushed for them to adopt democracy."

"We have democracy." Kyou points out. "The people elect their representatives to the Diet and the prime minister. And despite his... successes... the general MacArthur isn't very popular a figure among the people of the empire."

"They're still ruled by a king." Chris responds.

"An emperor." Kyou corrects. "But that does not mean their voices are not heard."

"But they don't elect their leader, and the emperor doesn't really answer to them." Chris insists. "Not really, anyway."

"I'd wonder if the Romanovs, at the end, felt they didn't answer to the people?" Kyou says. "That the revolution was an usurpation of god's plan by the unwashed peasantry?"

Chris frowns as Kyou nods. "We are well aware of the fate of imperial households that allow themselves to think themselves so far above their own people as to be untouchable." She says. "I'd argue, given your current stance on him, your president is far less answerable to the people of his nation than the Emperor is."

Chris' frown deepens- this isn't the way she expected the conversation to go, no doubt. "It might be interesting to talk about this later." She says, after a minute, her frown fading.

Kyou nods. "Indeed." She says, then smiles. "It's excellent to know that at least one of my sisters in law intend to keep life interesting."

Chris laughs. "Don't take it the wrong way, but we're not all Anastasia." She says, smiling- Kyou does have a way of disarming conflicts if she wants to. "So how long are you here for? A couple weeks?"

[x] At least. We're down for major rebuilding and overhaul work.

You nod. "At least. We're down for major rebuilding and overhaul work."

"Oh, so you're why the vought lifter is in?" She asks, and you nod. "We'd been wondering if it was another drake standing up, but no one's seen a lost pilot rattling around yet."

You shrug. "We'd have heard about it if there were." You say.

"Well, according to the news the marines are opting for three more Wyverns." Christina says. "Clinton says she's going to review the program if she gets in, though, so she'll probably slash funding."

You shrug. "We are boo-coo expensive" you point out. "They'd get squadrons of F-35s for the same price as a drake."

"Yeah, but that- " She catches herself. "She wants to cut funding across the board." She says. "And wants to review the old treaties with the Confederate coven. She says that since the coven was founded by traitors, it doesn't have a place in the US."

You shrug. "Witch politics." You say- your way of dismissing the entire thing.

She shakes her head. "Not really." She says. "I mean, if she forces the disestablishment of a coven, that's a huge overstep. No president has ever done that."

"I'm sure she's just playing to her base." You point out. If there's one truism you know, it's the politicians lie- and the most effective way to find out if they are is if they're breathing.

"Maybe, but she says a lot of crazy things like that." Chris continues. "I mean, even king Obama didn't cut funding for the wyvern program that badly, and he had enough sense to leave the covens alone. Trump says he intends to increase funding, especially with the war now."

"Which begs the question when miss Clinton made her statements." Kyou says. "Were they before the Chinese invaded Korea?"

Chris hesitates. "Well, yeah, but she hasn't said anything about it since then." She says, while Kyou nods.

"Anyway, speaking of, have you heard from Tatyana?" You ask, swerving the subject away from politics.

Christina smiles. "Oh!" She exclaims. "Yeah, a few days ago, in fact. She just dropped to class, she says there's about ten in her group."

"Ten?" Kyou asks. "That's quite a few. My class had six."

Chris shrugs. "The younger witches aren't as sketched out by the whole MIU thing as we were, I think." She says.

"It's fortunate that they're not." Kyou responds. "It's nothing to be afraid of. I find it to be a great comfort, to have people close to me I know I can rely upon utterly."

"Anyway, she's in classes now, but they get weekends off, if you want to catch up." Chris continues. "Most of their classroom stuff is down at North Island, but sometimes they come up here, especially if there's a drake on base."

[] We'll probably see her either way, then.
[] We might go down there, if we can get a pass.

[x] We'll probably see her either way, then.

"We'll probably see her either way, then." You say, getting nods of agreement out of the three witches.

"Most likely." Chris agrees. "I invited her to one of Trump's rallies in Nevada, but she turned me down." She shrugs. "Maybe she's going to be more interested in spending time with you, since she's in the wyvern program too."

"It's possible," Kyou says. "However, I seem to recall that my class was far more interested in discussing other things with the witches that were brought in to speak about it than politics."

"Well, sure, but you didn't go through in an election year, did you?" Chris points out. "Besides, his rallies are a lot of fun. You should go to one sometime, Morgan."

"I'll pass." You say, shaking your head.

"Hey, maybe you'd like to go on my podcast or one of my videos?" Chris says, suddenly. "That might be fun, you know."

"Didn't you say it you mostly did political analysis?" You ask.

"Well, and current events." she says with a nod. "It's mostly politics right now though."

"Pass." You repeat, frowning. "I'm not even sure I'm allowed to appear on political shows."

"That's just if you're in uniform." Chris points out, but you shake your head.

"No, it's a program thing." You respond. "We-" you indicate yourself and Kyou- "Are identifiable as the crew of Wyvern Muninn. So we're always considered to be in uniform for that kind of purpose."

Kyou nods. "And it would be somewhat improper for Morgan to appear anyway, due to his place with regards to me." She says. "It could be seen as foreign meddling in internal American affairs."

"He's still a citizen of the US." Chris says. "I mean, he doesn't have to come on the show if he doesn't want, but he still votes and that kind of thing. I get that regs don't allow it, but it's not like he's actually a member of the imperial family or anything."

Kyou nods. "At least not for the time being." She agrees. "However, it is known he is part of my immediate and direct household, and therefore it would be improper."

Chris blinks. "I mean, I guess." She says, shrugging. "Bet my viewers would love it though."

"They'll have to do without, for now." You say, and she sighs.

"I guess." She says.

There's a quiet minute, then you stand up. "You getting hungry?"

"I thought you'd never ask." Chris responds. "Need any help?"

"Nope, I've got it." You say, and she smiles.

"I see the borders of Morganlandia are still closed." She notes. "Even to Imperial Nobility?"

"You renounced your claims, remember?"

She laughs at that, though you can tell she's still a little disappointed about your refusal to appear on her podcast or 'show'- whatever that is. Youtube, you suspect- but either way, certainly not something you need to get involved with. It does make you realize, though, not for the first time, how much of a headache your sisters probably are for the public relations office. Maybe that's why they're so willing to let you do all the things you do- you, at least, aren't an active problem like the rest of your family.

And that's going to be it for the week! got sidetracked there at the end by an Email from school- useless drama meaning I might just sleep in Monday, haha! We'll see what happens, though.

Anyway, as usual, I'll be around, both in thread and in the discord, to answer any questions or comments if there are any. Otherwise gents, till next week, cheers!
