You clamber back up the rope ladder onto the SILVER LINING and give LUMSDEN the all clear to fire up the engines back to DUNLIVIN.

Most people have dispersed back to their rooms. As GILCREST lives and works in the lower decks, he is still here. Just vibe'n.

"I notice we've picked up another crew member or something. Pretty well dressed for a goblin, but they're a dude, huh?"

he takes a long draw

"Can't win em all."

You have the run of the ship as it journeys to DUNLIVIN.

"Ah, you know me, Boss. Always happy to do some bending and lifting with a big girl in a tank top - and help out. It's pretty boss that Karl's gonna be bringing in some extra money although, call me cynical but I don't see how he'd pitch in."

>"Regarding babes, we have one inbound. She just has to deal with something first."

Gilcrest makes a happy chittering noise

"No fooling? Well then I look forward to it. You really are the best boss."

You walk around the ship, sort of half-searching for Highball when, as you suspected she whistles to you as you walk past your room.

She is relaxing on your bed, arms behind her head and her knees crossed, casually kicking one leg.

"While I do likes my own space, this temporary shack-up is now raw deal."

She wriggles to the edge of the bed and sits up, patting the bed with both hands.

"This bad boy is just as soft as mine"

She shoots you a smile

"Plus it smells like Joey."

She leans back on her elbows

"Whassup."

>"What do you think of Karl? You had a chance to talk with him back at the waffle house. Do you think he could help us out with any of our predicaments while he is with us?"

Highball links her fingers and stretches her arms above her head.

"Well he's a dust-out like me, of course. For different reasons, though. He was actually earmarked to be a shiek but we didn't want any part of it. He left for moral reasons, not because his life was in danger."

She traces a circle on her chest

"You would have seen that metal tag he wears around his neck, yeah? That's a city pass. Means he's allowed to go into civilised cities controlled by the GTU and even conduct business there. Put simply he's keeping his bony nose clean."

She scratches her eat with one of her feet.

"In addition to his job, the palooka is kind of a one-gob campaign towards changing the overall public perception of dust-out gobs and gobs in general. Does his best to be polite and calm and not mack on folks to much. I know he's still looking around, though. Can't fool these peepers. It's not his fault. It's his nature. he's just fighting it."

She gives you a small smile

"Naturally I didn't tell him about how we met or the previous business going on on this airship..."

"Regarding his skills? He's a real keen tracker, lock picker and problem solver. If you need someone found, you give him the data and he'll get you close. And he's sneaky as they come, except for me. In combat, he's packing a nice gun and some handy potions, but he's not a heavy hitter."

Highball rests on her elbows once more

"That all making sense, doughy?"
>>
>>4505527
>If you need someone found, you give him the data and he'll get you close.

"Definitely something he can help us with, then. Finding Eccard Hilbosh and convincing him to offer his services would be quite a boost for our company. That'll be something to talk with Karl once we have suitable information he can work with."

Ask HB what her opinion is about envenoming her weapons with dwarf venom if were acquire some?

"Ac-tu-ally if you're in a rubbing mood, I could use some of that new strength of yours."

Highball flops onto her stomach.

"May have stayed out of combat in Kretch but I was spooking and clambering like crazy. Guess it's been a while since I used all my AP on it. Can I get a li'l rub down?"

>>4505783
>"Definitely something he can help us with, then. Finding Eccard Hilbosh and convincing him to offer his services would be quite a boost for our company. That'll be something to talk with Karl once we have suitable information he can work with."

"We learn a thing or two about this Hilbosh cat, and give Karl a bit of thinking time and yeah, I'll bet he can track him down easy. Got a lot going on upstairs, that one. Convincing Hilly to then work for US might be trickier. Guys gotta be pretty gone if he's dosing the Old Guard, right?" I guess the convincing part is where we come in."

>Ask what she thought of Jorn.

"Cheerful like, almost TOO cheerful - if that makes sense? I mean, she's probably just riding high because she basically got what she wanted out of life after a run of bad luck, but it was kooky to be around."

"Not that I'm gonna be chuckin stones based on people's first impressions. Half the crew didn't do great at that."

She gives a thoughtful look

"She dressed pretty nice."

>>
>>4506899
Let's just generally rub the gobbo down

Ears, back, stummy, anywhere that needs attention, gotta be a good grel bf, and that means being good to the gal!

Other than that, I guess as long as there is no business to talk about I say we just have a chill moment with HB, I think she'd enjoy a small detour full of r&r
>>
>>4506899
Stretch your fingers and give her a massage.

"Agreed. She gave off a business casual sort of feel with her appearence. We could talk with the tailor in Dunluvin if we'd like to wear the same style."

Give best gobbo a massage, probably focusing on her sorest parts - so legs, arms and back, plus anywhere she asks - with a touch of playful ear-rubbing or butt-touching for good measure.

"She seems friendly enough at least, and willing to help us deal with Edgewater. Wouldn't hurt to have a prudemagus along with us anyway, once she's gone and gotten her qualifications."
>>

You flex your fingers and begin at her shoulders. She makes the right sounds. You rub your thumbs in between her shoulder blades and work you index and middle fingers into her clavicles. She arches her back and presses into you, accidently or otherwise.

You work your way down her spine, finding knots and patches of tension, as you rub your thumbs into the dimples of her lower back she squeaks and bites her hand. She assures you its the good hurt an asks you to keep going. You do, and she squeaks and squeals into the mattress, forcing you to shift around her as she pushes her backside up until she's on her knees.

>>4506933
>"Agreed. She gave off a business casual sort of feel with her appearance. We could talk with the tailor in Dunlivin if we'd like to wear the same style."

"Duvnt fuut my lime ob work"

>>4508611

Highball wiggles as if to prove your point

>"She seems friendly enough at least, and willing to help us deal with Edgewater. Wouldn't hurt to have a prudemagus along with us anyway, once she's gone and gotten her qualifications."

"I dunno how she does in a rumble but between being a prudemagus and a business manager, she'll make sure we're saving gold. Prudemagi have devoted their lives to sensible magic. Food. Water. Bedding. All with spells. Very *click-CLiikikikikik..*"

Highball's eyes roll back and she grips the sheets as you sneakily rub her ears.

She turns to you breathing ragged and face flushed

"Thanks for that, nabob...I can feel my AP returning already..."

We had a chance of hiring Jorn, but instead came up with Karl. I believe we also had new plans to chase after the ancient dwarf bounty after visiting Dunlivin.
Lastly we have a whole bag of sudachi we hope she finds acceptable substitute for limes.

"We basically got what we came for and more. Jorn told her side of the story and gave us valuable intel on Edgewater who was last seen heading towards Yagadoov Canyon. Not only that, but we learned what weapons Edgewater uses from and advice how to combat his strengths.

Lastly we learned about some bounty hunting opportunities, two of which are beyond our current abilities, but I am confident we can claim the bounty on the ancient dwarf one. Reward money and ingredients for potions we'd get would go a long way to help our business."

Turns out all along she's been a good girl that got tangled in bad business. She's... had a bad year, to say the least. We ended up recruiting her, just gotta wait for her to finish her degree before she joins us in earnest. Should be a few days at most.

We should expand the Airship's capabilities and add more rooms for more party members/passengers before we go hunting for things that can kill us.

We need to add "Air Strike" to our list of offensive options. Nothing like the sound of big guns on your side firing overhead to reassure you of your chances of victory!

Sometimes adventuring is about getting something done with all you're capable of yourself, and not through technology itsself.

I understand proving yourself, but is saving the people less important than that proving your own capabilities in all cases?
>>
>>4514022
I'll give it a go.
>>4514014
"A has-been" she says, fully capably of handing me my ass. You could do it, if you were motivated to, but you have your reasons not to.

I can understand hesitation with the cannons, but sometimes it's not an adventure. Sometimes it's just a problem that needs to be dealt with.
>>
>>4514014
Damn, Lumsden's getting a little deep here. She gets that we're not just some "wannabe" adventurer she's met so many times before but we did just make a remark that'd make us resemble one.

I'd point out that said theoretical arial barrage was a "reassurance" rather than a full on provider of certainty. Just because you have "air superiority" (especially in the moment) doesn't mean your victory is certain.

No plan survives first contact with the enemy. Any advantage you think you have absolutely can and probably will be erased or even turned against you by a cunning foe you foolishly underestimated. Don't know if "The Art of War" is a tome (of surprisingly meager stature in regards to page and word count by the by) is a thing but I'd like to think we get the great sage's recommendations innately.

Hell, best gobbo does, she and Mr. Tzu would get along famously. Goblin combat is exactly as he'd suggest.

Anon's refrencing "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu and he's right. Highball's/goblin combat doctrine is in accord with his recommendations. Better to win without fighting and if you must fight, harass and disrupt as much as possible before you actually go for the direct battlefield confrontation.

You tried to stick up for yourself and forgot IDs were a thing.

I'll save you by backing your statement up, nonetheless.

He's not incorrect despite the dubious way he tried to support his own argument. That IS essentially what The Art of War describes, and her combat doctrine DOES fit it.

>We're dragging you off ship next port for beers and pub antics. I think it'll do ya some good.

Lumsden smiles fondly and tousles your hair.

"Not part of my contract, kid. I may have gone soft, but I assure you, if you try dragging me anywhere, you're gonna pull something."

>Anything to report on your end before I make some rounds bellow deck?

"It's still a long way from anything dangerous, but while you're upgrading the ship please don't forget that we got kinda blasted back at Scadam. It's minor at this point, but if I do two or three more extractions like that, bits of the old girl are gonna start coming off."

You've reset the tone a little, so you offer:

>"I can understand hesitation with the cannons, but sometimes it's not an adventure. Sometimes it's just a problem that needs to be dealt with."

"I know...I know I was just thinking of it within the context of bounty hunting. Even then, it's just my code. It's none of your concern and I shouldn't make it that. Just forget I said anything, yeah?"

Pull out the bag of sudachi.
>"One more thing. We couldn't find any limes, but how do you feel about sudachi?"

Lumsden beams at you

"Sudachi are great! That was really thoughtful of you! Thank you!"

Lumsden accepts the sudachi then does a weird lurch before smiling and going back to her wheel.

"A couple more hours. It's not fast, but it is smooth, huh?"
>>
>>4518226
Ok, how much of the crew essentially just stays on the ship 24/7? We need to at least get those people some carry out once we hit Dunlivin. If we can convince them all to actually depart the ship and hit up a decent restaurant we should do that.

I'm pretty sure we don't got any massive collective bounties or high priority APB's on our asses/ship so that should mean we're safe in making that play. Err, it is hard to outright steal an airship out of the docks of a major city once officially registered right? That's kinda an assumption I'm banking on here. If unattended airships tend to get stolen from those we'll need to leave at least one hard hitting combatant behind to ensure that doesn't happen.

You hold out a fist to Lumsden, who not really understanding, mirrors your pose without her fist touching yours.

She stands downward dog to mountain so that she is facing you once more.

"Exercising for fun is another thing entirely."

>Also ask her what she thinks about the current plans for the future of the company and if she has something on her mind.

"I confess, I find our path towards troubleshooting and bounty hunting appealing. While I do not doubt the value of being a potion company, there is little I can contribute to our efforts on the potion front. I am, however confident that I can help with more...tactile problems."

Richter clenches her fists and glances skyward.

>"Jorn didn't let a bad hand get her down even if it initially did lead her to team up with Edgewater."

Richter nods thoughtfully.
"It takes a rare spirit indeed to not seek revenge when one has been wronged so greatly. But is almost as rare again to know when enough is enough and to not simply seek to make others suffer as you have once you are already on that path. For many, even most there are shifting goalposts. You justify throwing a punch one day, then a rock the next, then an explosive. if you have justified one, before you know it you can justify the other. Jorn sought not justice but harm, but she knew when to stop. She knew when she had gone too far. There is anger and hate in her soul but I do not think she is a bad person."

Richter cracks her knuckles. it makes your ears ring.
"That is not to say, I will not be watching her very closely for some time."

>Mention that we're glad to have her confidence on the decision of working with Jorn. I was a little worried that we were being too hasty hiring someone who was happy to work with our enemy number one until very recently, but it's reassuring to hear she agrees with the decision.

"She will either prove herself a useful and worthwhile ally. Or she will afford me an interesting challenge. I am confident I can protect you from harm should she act inappropriately, so I saw no reason to oppose your decision."

>"By the way, what did you think of doctor Ash? He certainly had way with words and I must admit listening to him expounding his expertise was rather captivating."

Richter averts her gaze and exhales into her gym towel

Richter wrings her gym towel and bites her lip.

Richter shakes her head.
"I am sure he regrets his reaction also. I am sure we parted on good terms."

Richter shakes her head.

"In such times, we muscle wizards did not seek so much to protect or enlighten society. Our power was unfettered, with even less thought or concern for consequences. A muscle wizard in today's world is less likely to create natural landmarks but we are also less likely to become overly focussed on outdoing our own ability. We have come to learn that such obsessions, though tempting - are ultimately dangerous and against what we seek for this world."

Richter scratches her head, ashamed of rambling.

"The best help you can offer me, is to help me understand where I, now at the end of my pilgrimage, fit into this world. Who am I here to help?"

You nod thoughtfully and wander down up the lab.

Surrey, in a practiced motion, flips her goggles up and nods at you professionally.

"For the mean time, I have not taken any further steps with brewing and distilling the vodka. I am trying to focus on mutterbottles and the slow distillation of some mana potions."

I think that kitchen could use a mini-oven. Y'know for little things you wanna treat yourself/others with on the quick.

Like, wanna make a personal pizza without having to preheat the big oven for ten minutes or more? Well, a mini-oven preheats in about 3-5 and does the job just as well with a fraction of the resources.

I assume that since he's got refrigerators that electricity is a thing in this setting in some form. That stuff works both ways by the by. Easy cooling and easy heating isn't that hard. What would shock me is if Microwaves were a thing. I'd bet they ain't and we got no hope of inventing one because that requires an absolute grasp on the concept of radiation.

Speaking as anon rather than Joey, it seems like the in-universe use of "civilization" or "civilized" is a bit of a misnomer, being as it apparently excludes various species and societies that clearly boast their own cultural and technical achievements. >"Yet."

Karl gives you a look.

"Huh."

Karl writes in his notepad.

>"That's fine, we don't really need anything in that regard anyways. I just think it's a good idea to have contacts on hand for anything in case of an emergency, you know?"

Karl doesn't look up

"If you're ever that desperate, something tells me SHE will find YOU."

>"Well, we know Edgewater's gang of desperados has, or, had I guess, access to transmogs, mutterbottles, and loads of snakewater. They had stationed themselves in Scadam after sacking it, and we should have a map somewhere of the places they'd hit. As far as Eccard himself, Surrey - the alchemist on board - would probably know more. She's the one who let me know it might be him in the first place."

Karl flicks his notepad shut.

"Not a terrible start. I'll talk to Surrey at some point."
>>

"Alright, well, thank you. I suppose I'll leave you be then."

Shit, last time we saw boddicker we should've asked her to help turn our deliver to the Old Guard into a sting. From what I know of her other incarnations, she'd enjoy gunning down a bunch of stuck-up racist dissidents.

Do you want to drop in on anyone else or should I cap off the thread here and start the next one with you landing in DUNLIVIN

"Your help to track down Mr.Hilbosh will be invaluable, Karl. My concern will be how to convince him to offer his services. He is making product for others as I said, but what motivates him I have no clue"

Change subject.
"To secure further funding for potion business our company has also have taken to bounty hunting. One promising bounty happens to be staying at the Speelskaard resort enjoying their ill gotten gains. As a well travelled professional would you know anything about the place and people there?"
>>
>>4542832
I would suggest briefly speaking with Mike, as he is our go to outdoorsman and will be integral if we hunt dwarves. We need to make sure he has everything he needs and if he can help us to prepare.

Oh, we're on page 9 already? Let's go with this >>4542851 and cap it off after, then.

It's kinda concerning how lately we've been ending in a position where we're going to meet someone without knowing if we're gonna have to hire them or kill them, huh?

>"Your help to track down Mr.Hilbosh will be invaluable, Karl. My concern will be how to convince him to offer his services. He is making product for others as I said, but what motivates him I have no clue"

Karl shrugs.

"We can rule out money or conventional morality. I've heard some people get spiritual after their time at the top. That or they go buggo off their own fumes. I'm considering either likely at this stage."

>"To secure further funding for potion business our company has also have taken to bounty hunting. One promising bounty happens to be staying at the Speelskaard resort enjoying their ill gotten gains. As a well travelled professional would you know anything about the place and people there?"

Karl puts his hand in his pockets and lowers his head. He does a mirthless laugh. How deep his voice is has yet to stop being weird.

He looks back up at you with a sad smile.

"I know enough to know there's no point."

He reaches into his jacket and pulls out a fliptop box. He pulls a cigarette out with his teeth.

"And I know you're assembling some sharp knives here, and I know you've got a plan - or you think you do. And I'm real sorry. I believe you can do it, given enough time and the right people."

He gestures with the unlit cigarette.

"Let's just say you get in. Let's say you get past all the guards and red tape. Let's say you don't take a single life changing bribe to turn around and walk away. You find your guy and you bag him good. You don't even hurt any of the innocent staff."

Karl holds your gaze and shakes his head, tired despair in his eyes.

"Someone there will have made you. One of you. And if they don't dog you the rest of their life - because they can't find you....you can bet all your cabbage they'll be after your family and anyone else you care about. These are connected people and they do anything to protect and avenge them and theirs."

Karl sighs

"I'm sorry, I don't mean to discourage you here. But you're still thinking about good triumphing over evil"

Karl walks past you and gives you an affectionate pat on the shoulder.

"Nothing triumphs over money."

Heh. They'd need to get in line after the Old Guard. But yeah, it may be a bad idea to do this. At least for now.

You drop in on Mike. He is glad to see you as always. Burstock is sitting on his desk, she turns to you and gives you a knowing smile.

As far as I understand it with this being the first thread I'm in, our current problems/priorities are:
- Finish off Edgewater
- Hunt down Elder Dwarf
- Break into potionmaking business
- Manage the Old Guard somehow (bribe or annihilate)
- Hunt down corrupt corporate criminal

I think turning the Old guard delivery into a massacre through exploding crates and fire support (possibly with back up from GTU troops courtesy of Boddicker) should be our first priority, since it's the only one with an actual time limit on it. And also, if we pretend we're just making a drop-off, they probably won't be as prepared as they will need to be.
>>
>>4543991
"Hey Mike, Burstock. I'd like to ask your thoughts on hunting down the Dwarf bounty."
Tell Mike what Doc Ash told us unless Burstock hasn't. Ask if he feels our group is up for it, since he would be the one our success hinges on due to his superb senses and experience as a hunter.

>Different characters will have different perspectives on the idea.
Karl might be right, but I imagine that people like Mandus Geef only look out for each other as long as they don't cross each other. If Geef (seemingly) does something to upset his fellow contemporaries, getting caught alive for a bounty will be best he can hope for.

>>4544046
Old guard number in hundreds. Not only that there is no guarantee they'll trust us enough, or any reason to trust to allow us to be in ambushing position to begin with.

I think getting this dwarf bounty will net us cash, ingredients, and an excuse for the Old Guard that we are gathering ingredients to fill their order after Chesapeake ran with the money, allowing us to buy more time.

>"Hey Mike, Burstock. I'd like to ask your thoughts on hunting down the Dwarf bounty."

Mike nods.

"Sounds good. Volly was just bringing me up to speed with the information you got from this Doctor Ash, fellow. He sounds like a good guy to jaw with."

Mike goes to a shelf and pours out three glasses of Hennessey.

"Now..by the sounds of it you're going to need ME there to harvest the bonemeal safely. That's only a thing if you want the bonemeal and not just the bounty. But, and I could be reading this wrong, I reckon you probably want both. So I gotta be in the party."

He hands you a glass

"So that means you and I are a lock in. That leaves one more slot. Every person who could go there has advantages and disadvantages. Richter inflicts HUGE magical damage but she goes through mana like grits through a goose. That also leaves us with no healing, barring potions -which admittedly we're not short on. Volly would give us healing and she might be able to hold the dwarf in place while we just hit it with what we have."

"Not for two turns in a row, the physiology is too different from other species, but yeah."

Mike hands Burstock her glass.

"Nep would leave us with no tank OR healer but both me and her can do status effects. if we both keep it busy you can just give it everything you've got but we'd be counting on you to take it down. That thing starts charging and biting us and it'll get bad but fast."

Mike takes a sip.

"This things an elder dwarf. Which also means its senses are huge. It's going to START with improved initiative over us. So we may need to use a few different tricks."

Mike finishes his drink.

"The other option is if you level up and take the extra team member buff. But well, you're a little ways away your next level up so that's a longer term plan. Not that there's anything wrong with that."
>>
>>4544322
>I reckon you probably want both.
You reckon right.

>"Not for two turns in a row, the physiology is too different from other species, but yeah."
Hmm. Combining that with Kneecap, we might be able to keep it from acting about 3 out of 4 turns, depending on rolls. And since Kneecap ignores armor, and there's a whole turn to add Hell's Heart... that has a nice ring to it, don't you think?

>It's going to START with improved initiative over us. So we may need to use a few different tricks.
We should probably use Grink Rak to even the odds, then.
>>
>>4544322
Off the bat I'm leaning towards Burstock, as I feel like it's gonna be a slugfest and I'd rather avoid burning through our whole supply of potions on one fight. I'm reasonably confident that between us we should be able to put out enough damage to take it down without having to add another pure damage dealer to the lineup, but I dunno if I'm underestimating this dwarf - in any case, like I said, having Burstock there should let us stick it out through a longer fight.
>>
>>4544341
>>4544447
between KNEECAP, Burstock's BODILY BETRAYAL, and Mike's PIN DOWN, we might be able to just stunlock it.

You sip your own drink and explain that while you haven't completely decided, that you're leaning towards the team being You, Burstock and Mike.

Burstock and Mike look at each other and nod then turn back to you.

"Understood. I will plan accordingly. Boom flasks, cloud jars and I'll even carry a grink with me."

Burstock does one of her dangerous stretches.

"I think you're on the money, cochise. We're not going to necessarily find this asshole straight away. If we encounter trouble along the way, I'll be able to keep you guys topped up after each battle. Make sure that when we DO have to deal with him, we're doing it with a full tank."

Burstock slams back her Hennessey happily.

"Could be some good grind, you know?"

It seems like both the corrupt corporate and the Old Guard might be easier once we have enough money to our name to shrug off some of their more "social" counterattacks.
