/qst/ - Quests

Ok gents, sorry about t he late start today! Working on a part for a NIMS certification thing we've got to do and it's a bit of a bastard, haha. I hate flat bottom holes. Nothing unusual going on this week, I hope, but we all know how that can go.

Anyway, I think that's about it!

=========================

Merlin- somehow- managed to get you approved to start taking Tatyana up on short practice training flights over the ocean range, or the north side of Ft. Irwin. How she managed to do it, given the usual restriction against wyvern pilots flying anything else, is at best a guess on your part- though you're reasonably sure the trainers here shouldn't be all the difficult to manage, even without Muninn's presence.

The trainer in question is one of the small fleet of modified Redhawks used for SIO flight training- the instructor's usual position replaced with a copy of the rear seat of the Wyvern, though without either the MIU equipment nor the flight suit interface gear- trainee SIOs make use of the leg interfaces exclusively. Of course, the front office, equipped for an instructor, has a whole panel dedicated to running through various training events- from simulating target tracking to onboard issues like an engine failure or electronics fault. You kind of laugh at that- in flight, those kinds of things are Muninn's domain, and the AI handles them faultlessly.

Still, the little trainer, looking very out of place, has been towed over to a spot near the dragon's roost, checked out and fuelled for flight- you're just waiting for Tatyana and her escorting officer to show up before you mount up and head out over Irwin- there's more targets there for her to practice tracking on, and the entire fort is wired for training ground-attack missions as well, giving you more options. It's been made clear, though, that this is not a training flight- it's practice for when she's cleared to move onto flight training, but since that's done on an individual basis, that could be weeks or months away. Tatyana seems sure it won't be, and that she'll be one of the first to move on from ground instruction to training flights, but you're not as sure- if witch training is like pilot training, attitude is a factor as well, with the board starting to take a more active interest in a candidate at this point.

One of the base's carts pulls up, with Captain Carnegie driving it. There's four witches in there- you recognize the captain, though you don't know who the witch sitting next to her is. Behind her is Tatyana, trying to look professionally bored and failing miserably and another witch in a flight suit with a brown leather bomber jacket over it- another aggressor then. They get out and you salute the captain- you're in uniform and covered, afterall- and she returns it.

"Good morning, ladies." You greet, and the captain nods.

"Morning LT." She says. "Found these two over in operations. They said you'd agreed to take up a trainee on a practice flight?"

You nod, looking over at Tatyana. "Yes, ma'am."

"He kinda has to, uh, ma'am." Tatyana offers. "He's my brother, afterall."

"Ah, that makes more sense." The captain says, shooting a glance over at Muninn, now with a pair of valkyrie units parked nearby. "Odd to see you here alone. I'd expected at least one of your teammates to have been along."

You shake your head. "Mori, our new wingmate, is in for her MIU work today." You explain. "Kyou and Wendy went along with her, but I'd already been tapped for this flight and couldn't."

"I see." the captain responds, then shrugs. "Well, we're supposed to get to sit down with them, I'd kinda hoped to catch them out here before we went up. You're going to be over Irwin, they tell me?"

You nod. "Yes, ma'am."

She smiles. "Thought so, we've got flights out over the NTTR for most of the day, and the ocean target test ranges aren't much good if you're not dropping anything. Safe flight, LT, I'll see you on the ground."

"Ma'am." You say as she steps off with her wingmate.

"So, Lieutenant, did they tell you what this was all about?" Tatyana's chaperone says. She's not in uniform- you're not even sure she's military, there are civilian instructors at the school, most under contract from the companies responsible for the hardware in a wyvern.

You nod. "Yes, ma'am." You say. "I'm not a rated IP, this is only for her to be able to practice some of what she's been learning in flight. I'm not to initiate any simulated problems or tasks, and we're not to exit the training range airspace we've been assigned to other than to return to base or in case of emergency. Hard deck for this flight is two thousand feet."

She nods. "Operations will let us know when you're on the way back, we'll have someone pick her up from there when you land." She says. "She's all yours, Lieutenant."

Tatyana waits for her to leave- taking the cart back towards ops, before mouthing the word 'lewd' at you.

[x] Do you want to do a walkaround inspection with me, so we can get in the air quicker?

You motion at the aircraft. "You want to do a walkaround inspection with me, so we can get in the air quicker?" You ask, and Tatyana nods.

"Yeah." She says, walking over as you start at the nose and work your way back. "They said that in the fleet a lot of times we don't really do this, since it's more of the pilot's job and we need to be booting up the computers and warming up the web inside the aircraft more than worrying about this. Didn't Auntie Merlin usually say she let dad do this, too?"

You nod. "But remember she had her talent that let her check on the jet, too." You point out. "She didn't need to do a walkaround inspection, her talent let the jet tell her any problem it had."

"But we've got AIs for that." Tatyana points out- which isn't exactly wrong, but it's far from right.

"The AI can't catch everything." You respond. "They don't know things like if there's anything in the intake inlets, which would cause FOD to your turbine blades, or if the wheels are in good shape." You shrug. "They can tell you about most issues, but things they don't have sensors for they don't know about unless you tell them."

She frowns, and looks like she wants to argue, but instead follows you around the back of the jet, where you take a minute to examine the engine exhausts there. There's heat discoloration of the normally shiny metal, of course, but nothing unusual- which is, again, what you expected to see. This is one of the actual flight-training aircraft used for the school, so it's not exactly new. Well maintained, of course, but not new.

Tatyana doesn't complain too much as you finish the inspection and head back to the cockpit ladder. With the fighter being much smaller than a Wyvern, and without it having to clear fuselage weapons stations from the ground- the redhawk is entirely unarmed- it sits much lower to the ground. Tatyana heads up first, giving you a chance to head up and see if she's alright, getting situated in the cockpit.

She looks to be concentrating as she threads the harness straps through her rescue vest- this is probably the first time she's ever actually done it, you think. She fumbles a bit at it. "This is harder than I thought ." She mumbles. "I never did like that kink crap Tabby was into."

1/2
>>
Need help?" You ask, but she shakes her head.

"No, I got it." She says- she's basically done, with everything fed through and clipped on where it needs to be, her legs disappearing in the interface units built into the aircraft. You've been told that, as trainer units, they can't do anything more than draw a trickle of power from a witch- they're there to simulate the feeling of the various demands, if not the intensity. It's designed specifically to be easy on any witch converting over- to help them avoid conversion sickness.

You head up into the front seat- normally reserved for the trainees, in the SIO ships, the positions are reversed. The jet has a single large MFD that takes up most of the console, with the hard controls spread around it and on the sides, with a right side mounted stick and a left side throttle. You crack open your preflight checklists, freshly drawn from the support shop, and stop on item one as you plug your helmet into the umbillical outlets on your left, running through an intercom check before starting the preflights.

Tatyana is a little slower than you're used to, taking several seconds, in some cases, to check an item off. Still, you're ready to roll after about fifteen minutes.

"So how weird is it rolling without your AI or witch?" Tatyana asks. "I mean, you've got me here and I know I'm good, but it's gotta be strange, right?"

[x] A lot less information than I'm used to, but remember I haven't been fleet that long, so I still remember these jets.

You frown. Most of what you need is right there in front of you on the MFD, of course- these are, relatively speaking, simple, easy aircraft to handle, with robust controls and excellent power to weight. But it's still different than simply knowing all the information without having to look for it. You're starting to see why the restriction against Wyvern pilots flying other aircraft exists- you have to remind yourself more than once as you start to roll that you need to check the MFD.

"It's a lot less information than I'm used to," You admit, "But remember I haven't been fleet that long, so I still remember these jets."

"This isn't so bad." Tatyana confidently responds. "I mean, they made it sound like everything was gonna need attention all the time, but this is super easy."

"We're not even in the air yet." You point out- You'll be taking off first, before any of the top gun class flights, but that's more owing to you already being ready to roll than anything else. The taxiways are empty as you roll to the runway, pausing only briefly before getting clearance to takeoff. The redhawk accelerates much less quickly than Muninn, of course- but it's a remarkably smooth ride and transition from rolling to flying, your nose coming up off the runway almost at the same point Muninn's would, give or take a couple hundred feet.

Tatyana is quiet as the gear rolls up and locks into it's bays and you do a fast check- while she's got a full Wyvern cockpit back there, more or less, you've got all the same information up front, so you can read a positive lock on your gear in their up and stowed position, no faults showing electrically or mechanically, and everything where it should be. You're still not sold on the single-engine aircraft, of course, but the pipeline also instills you with a deep-seated fear of just what a witch can do to a high performance jet engine- and leashed as you are to Kyou, you know full well what they mean.

"Wow." Tatyana says as you pick up your northern corridor and pass to the east of the city. "You can see forever from up here, huh?"

[x] Not as much as you can in a drake. It's still pretty though.

"Not as much as you can in a drake." You say- not having the sensor package is a bit of an odd change for you, and you feel almost blind without it. These little trainers don't even have a radar set- of course, the armed version, being proposed by Boeing to replace tigershark and alpha jet fleets around the world, is much more capable- and exclusively for export.

You fly to the Ft. Irwin airspace, getting directions from the range control center there. There's no training going on, and the crash site of the lancer from what seems like a lifetime ago is little more than a discoloration on the ground beneath you- you only manage to find it as you fly over by using one of the nearby mountains as a landmark.

"I wonder how soon I'm going to move on to flight?" Tatyana says as you head southbound, having turned away from the northern boundary of the range's airspace about thirty miles away. You're well subsonic, of course, but you don't see any reason to play dangerously- especially since this is just a practice flight, and you're not trying to even approximate real-world behavior. "I mean, our instructors are already talking about it, and I know I'm probably the best in our class, so I'm sure I'm gonna be first." She says.

"You think?" You ask. The desert would be a little more fun to fly over without the hard deck, you think, but it doesn't really bother you that much anyway- frankly, the redhawk, for as good a trainer as it is, is still just a single-engine trainer, and can't nearly match what Muninn can do.

"Of course." She says, and you can almost see her ticking items off her fingers one by one. "I'm top of my class, I'm just the age they like, where even a wyvern commitment isn't going to make me ancient when I get out of service, and I'm a Bishop, and I'm a signals witch. I mean, cmon, that's like, perfect."

[] You seem confident of that.

[x] you know they assess personality, too, right?

"You know they assess personality, too, right?" You ask, pulling the redhawk around in a wide turn over the mock city below you. You're not sure which one this is- one of the bigger ones, with five roads radiating out from it like spokes on a wheel. You've got part of your MFD keyed in to what Tatyana's working on back there- remarkably little, honestly. Oh, she's done some things- worked her way through a practice electrical fault, tied on with the simulated network here at the fort- but she's not tracking anything or really sorting the data stream from the net, either. To be fair, were this a wyvern, she'd not need to do any of things, not really- Kyou still does, of course, but that's because it's Kyou.

"Oh sure, but c'mon." She says. "I mean, I'm just the age they like for crew, I've got the talent and the name, and I'm competent. They'll fast track me into the ready pool, for sure." She insists. "Besides, what are they gonna do, nix a Bishop because they didn't have a good feeling about her?"

"Probably." You respond- you recall fighting for your slot, and the competition being fierce regardless of your pedigree. "You've got no time in the fleet either."

"Yeah, but I can get that in the ready pool if I sit any time, and I probably won't." Tatyana responds. "And most of the witches we've got in class from the fleet are struggling. They're used to strikers, not being partnered up like this. And besides that, I mean, look at where I am. I'm first in class to be actually in a flight environment, not a simulator cab, and all my instructors know it."

"Because you pulled family connections." You point out.

"So?" She asks. "Look, I know you have problems with it, but it's stupid to not use the advantages we have." She says. "We can't do anything about it, right?"

[x] So this was just a waste of my time? Think real hard on your answer, ensign.

"So this was just a waste of my time?" You ask, more than a little irritated. You're not angry- you rarely are, except at your own mistakes- but you're about as close as you get. Besides being a waste of your time, it's a waste of navy resources- fuel and flight hours- especially considering another witch, one more driven and less arrogant might have actually used the flight for what it was for, instead of to show off. "Think real hard on your answer, ensign."

"Ens- aw don't be like that Morgan." Tatyana says. "I mean, I'm not just showing off and I am practicing-"

"You practiced two things." You say, cutting her off. "Neither of which has any bearing on what you'd be doing in a drake. I've got no target tracks via the net, I've got no battlespace picture that I didn't call up, I've got no idea what the area looks like other than what I can see. You've solved one simple simulate electrical fault the AI would have caught and tied in with the network here at the fort. That's it."

"It's not a training flight-" She protests.

"It's not a training flight, Sir." You correct her- maybe a little more harshly than you feel. "You've effectively wasted my time and a few thousand dollars in fuel and maintenance to stroke your ego. Since you have the datanet open, I want you to pull down a copy of your manuals and work through basic tasks while we burn our allotted time. "

"Morg-"

"That's Lieutenant, Ensign." You say. "And I don't want to hear anything other than aye, sir."

"Aye, sir." She says, a little sullenly. However, she does start calling up and working through basic tasks, practicing, if nothing else, finding and hitting proper controls for the basic things she'd be in control of- your MFD starts displaying all the simulated tracks for the base, the powered down SAM emplacements and the vehicle parks with the OPFOR's collection of Hollywood and real Soviet armor.

She works through most of the tasks competently enough- you're used to Kyou, of course, who immersed herself in Muninn's systems early on, enough so that by comparison, your sister's work seems a bit rough and awkward- she's capable of working out ahead of a problem easily, but she tries to juggle far too much and it all starts collapsing as a result. Still, for a trainee, you think, she's probably reasonably well off- so long as her ego doesn't get in the way of her better judgment like it did earlier.

1/2
>>
You keep an eye on the chrono on the console- and another on your fuel load. While you won't be landing light, you don't have all that much to play with, either, and you're not exactly feeling particularly generous. Still, you're a little happy when the time hits your briefed end of flight and you turn for the range exit and Miramar- and Tatyana doesn't complain or ask for more time over the range complex. Something you're explicitly allowed to do, you're told- out to the safe limit of fuel to return to Miramar.

The flight back is quiet, and you touch down with the bare minimum of chatter between yourself and the tower- Tatyana, as a trainee, isn't allowed to operate the radios, though she's allowed to listen in. The marshal on the ground directs you to a spot away from Wyvern row, where you shut down and gather your things as they push a set of rolling stairs up to the trainer.

You're close enough to ops that Tatyana's chaperone heads out to greet you, nodding to your sister as she passes. "Head on inside, ensign." The witch says. "I want to talk to the lieutenant for a minute."

"Yes, ma'am." Tatyana responds, shooting you a glance you can't quite read, and then heads into ops.

"How did it go, Lieutenant?" The older witch asks. "We'll pull logs, but we're interested in your opinion as a wyvern pilot."

[x] She's technically competent, but her attitude needs adjustment.

You frown, watching the retreating back of your sister. "She's technically competent, but her attitude needs adjustment." You finally say- you don't want to be too harsh, but at the same time, if that's the first reprimand she's had, then the board needs to take a closer look.

Her chaperon blinks. "Her attitude?" She asks, and you nod.

"You said you'll pull the intercom logs?" You ask, and it's her turn to nod.

"Of course. It's standard, we'll pull them and the electronics data logs." She says. "It's not an official training flight, but it will give us a look at what she can do."

"That'll explain it well enough." You say- you're not really sure exactly where this witch ranks, probably not lower than you, at any rate, but you're probably putting out the impression that this isn't a real good time to try and pull rank anyway.

"I see." She says, flicking a glance at the closing doors of ops. "Thank you, Lieutenant. I take it you don't intend to allow her any more flight time?"

You're not sure- and you're very aware that while you can't directly even harm Tatyana's course path through the school, you can easily cause the board to sit down and re-evaluate her. You don't think she's a bad fit, honestly, just entirely too spoiled and bratty as it is. You're hoping that getting knocked down a peg or two- being passed over to enter the flight training portion of class first, maybe, will help her start down that adjustment road.

[] I'd be willing to give her another shot later, but not now, no.

Attitude adjustments aside. We’ve got better things to do with our time. Like getting Mori integrated. Also, keeping Kyou’s eternal and undying lust on a leash. She’ll try and scoop up half the witches on base if we’re not around to stop her!

[x] I'd be willing to give her another shot later, but not now, no.

You frown. "I'd be willing to give her another shot later, but not now, no."

"I see," She says again. "it may not be an issue, we were considering advancing her to flight training within the next week anyway. She's easily top of her class, and seems to be well-liked. This is a bit..." She pauses. "Disturbing, as I'm sure you're aware, but I'm not sure if it's going to change the assessment board's opinion."

You shrug. "Board probably needs to look at her for attitude, if nothing else." You point out, and the witch smiles.

"That's true of a great many witches." She responds, then shakes her head. "I'll pass your assessment along, and we'll review the logs." She says. "Thank you, lieutenant."

"Ma'am." You say as she turns to leave. You can't help but wonder what that's gonna do in the long run- though it does make you curious as to what she meant by the board needing to look at the attitude of a great many witches. You can't imagine they had to sit that long to approve Kyou or Wendy, for example- or even Lotus or Danielle. Then again, you know that Danielle was fleet before she'd gone for the wyvern program, and Lotus of course had gone into the corporate world first- and Kyou, you know, has more than enough drive to push past any lingering issues like that. So you shrug mentally and push it aside, heading into ops to change.

You take a fast shower and change into the civilian clothes you'd brought with you- jeans and a T-shirt- pocketing your personal effects and strapping your watch back on. You've got more or less the rest of the day free- Mori won't even be in surgery yet, let alone anywhere close to being released, and you doubt either Kyou or Wendy has left your new wingmate yet. That makes perfect sense to you, of course, but it does mean that there's no one back in quarters. You could always go chat with Merlin- you're sure that, whatever she's up to, she'd welcome the company, if nothing else. You're still not sure exactly how you feel about Kyou's obvious overtures in that regard, either- conflicted is a word you rarely have to use in regards to your personal opinions, but there it is. Of course, even with it empty, you could head back to quarters anyway- maybe catch a nap or watch some youtube. Something tugs at the edges of your mind, though- a tiny sliver of doubt and apprehension that you're aware of, but can't pin down. Something- or someone- is gonna ruin your plans, you have no doubt.

[] Think I'll go talk to Merlin. Be kind of nice to just be able to talk a little.

[x] I'll go grab chow at the exchange and see what develops.

You decide that food is on order- you'll even spoil yourself a bit with a burger. Normally you avoid fast food like the blight it is, but you've always, always had a weakness for the whopper. You've never been able to figure it out, either- maman didn't care for it, and preferred her chicken places, and Frank never seemed to have a preference, getting burgers from wherever was convenient more so than anything else.

You catch an uber over to the exchange, the driver being a pimply-faced teenager with a bit of a squeak to his voice and in an ancient car you assume is some kind of hand-me-down. You don't really care much- no doubt one or both of his folks is active duty, and even though you wouldn't expect it, the car's interior is clean and doesn't smell terrible. You pay him as he drops you off, and he nods, pulling away from the curb without saying anything. It's a little early for afternoon chow, yet- the food court is still mostly empty, with just a few people occupying tables here and there.

You get a burger meal- the triple whopper you know is absolutely horrible for you, large drink and large fries- taking the tray over to a table in the far end of the dining area and sitting, unwrapping the greasy burger from it's paper covering and taking a bite, enjoying the 'flame broiled' burger patty for what it is- overly processed and overcooked, with limp lettuce and the barest hint of tomato on top, but it's so good. You muse for a second on how something like this is comfort food to you when you know with a little effort you can make something ten times better.

Your thoughts are cut short when you see her walk through the doors. Maman.

She glances around for a minute before seeing you and walking over, taking a seat across from you and sniping a fry off your tray.

"Morgan." She says, downing the stolen fry. "Imagine mah suprise on running into my bebe boy heah."

"Imagine." You respond, and she grins.

"I heah ya out flying wid dat youngest Bishop sistah o yours. She showing her brotha off foah her classmates, oui?"

You smile- your mother is a bit transparent after living with her as long as you have. "Ya not be here jus to talk about dat, maman." You respond.

"Oui, but maman hasn't seen her bebe boy in a while. Ya beleivin she not just be wantin to catch up?"

"Non." You respond, flatly, and she laughs.

"Well, ya be right, but I be wantin to do dat too." She says- as much of an admission as you're likely to get. "I heah ya have anudda new witch?"

You nod. "Imperial Guard." You respond, and she laughs.

"Dey be dat concerned about dat Kyou?" She asks. "Wid you dere? Almost insultin, oui."

You shrug. "Almost." You respond. "Bein an image ting."

"O course" Maman says. "Dem be worried about image, an lettin de son o mine be de only ting standin between an assassin and dey princess be botherin dem something feirce."

You nod.

"Despite dem bein terrified of us." She finishes with a grin. "But dat be de way dey be. She be good-lookin, I'm imaginin?"

You nod, and she smiles. "Startin to realize maybe your papa's arrangement do no be so bad, eh?"

You frown. "Not quite dat far, maman."

She laughs. "Not quite, mebby not." She admits. "But ya still be even up wid him now, regardless o how ya be lookin at it. And dey be tellin me rumors dat dat Merlin's marriage be on de rocks."

You blink. "What?"

"Oh, some pretty young ting tryin ta catch de eye o her husban." She says. "Dey be havin money an she probably be tinkin she can be makin a move ta get her a peice o dat bank account. She be havin ta try harder den she expect because he be so much like dat samantha, bout nearly blind ta dat kind o ting."

"So how de marriage be on de rocks?" You ask.

"Cos she be puttin de effort, an he be noticin." Maman responds. "I be bringin dis to you because I do no want dis to be a surprise none at all."

You frown. Coming on the heels of Mori- well. You know maman well enough to know that she's asking for your input- she's no doubt able to influence the direction things go, but she also knows about your thing for your 'aunt'. And while she's always, always said you need to make a move, she's also said that no one should force the issue.

"It still be early, but I be havin no doubt which way dis be goin in time." Maman says, then shrugs. "Be none of our bidness, non, and not what I be comin heah to discuss anyway."

[x] What did you want to talk about then?

You frown- Maman could, very honestly, just be keeping you informed of things that can or will affect you operationally. Of course, she could also be hinting that, if you wanted to make a move, now would be a good time to do so- or that she's in place to influence how it all shakes out. With Maman, sometimes it's difficult to tell.

"So what did you want to talk about then?" You ask, your accent gone instantly.

She smiles. "Evah hear o Aralsk Seven?"

You nod. "Natalya." You say simply- the complex was the home of the old Soviet superwitch program, shut down after the war after the UN decided that superwitches were a significant threat- and the security council went along with the decision. Your adopted sister Natalya was 'born' there- she says created, but functionally there's little difference to either of you.

"Not jus her, but oui." Maman says. "Ya know it not be shut down de way dey say."

You shrug. "I just hear rumors." You respond- you're not exactly a commando like she was. Or is- the line gets a little blurry sometimes when she's 'advising'.

"O course." She says, nodding. "De same rumors be sayin a lot of what dey learn wid Natalya an later generations be goin into dat Kyou. Don't be no one provin it, but..." She smiles in a way that says she knows full well it's true.

"You wanted to talk about Kyou?" You ask, and she shakes her head.

Maman shakes her head. "Non, but it do be bringin me to de point." She responds, stealing another fry. "Aralsk don't be closed down, an de information be sayin dat de Chinese be de ones usin it."

"So we could start seeing super witches?" You ask- it's an unwelcome prospect, but not one you're really worried about.

"It be possible. Also be possible ya be runin into dem bein in dem flying battleships, oui." Maman says. "But dat's not it either, non."

You shrug. "So what is?"

Maman smiles. "When ya gonna give me granbabies, boy of mine?" She asks.

[x] Maman, pls.

You sigh. "Maman, please." You say, shaking your head. "Ya be telling me all this important things, and then you ask that?"

She laughs. "It's important to me, boy of mine." She responds. "And de other mamans want to be knowin."

You shrug. "Not for a long while, maman."

"Ya don't be waiting too long, boy." She says. "ya drive ya poor maman crazy."

You shrug. "So dat be it?"

She nods, then frowns. "I be more worried dat the old supa witch program isn't gone, non." She says. "Dat fool of a man dat's your papa done went to a Soviet base durin de war, ya know dat?"

You nod.

"Dat mean ya could be havin a sistah dem makin ya not even know about." She continues. "An dat be dangerous for more reasons den I be needin to tell ya."

You nod- that concern had been one Natalya had voiced years ago, though she's been quiet on the point since. "You think they did?"

Maman shakes her head, then looks over towards the door. "I don't be knowin, but I do be suspectin." She responds. "We be knowin at least dey have at least one supah witch dat be too young to be out befoah de restriction, but don't nobody be able to prove nothin." She says. "Even de witch dat ya be helpin the Japanese capture not be knowin."

You nod- you'd almost forgotten about that. "She be Soviet?"

Maman nods. "Oui." She says. "She be flyin wid the Chinese, but since de Soviets an Japanese have a treaty, she not really be a POW." She shrugs. "Be above my pay grade, but she been askin ta meet de pilot an crew dat shot her down." Maman smiles. "Ya be tinkin she be wantin to do like dat Katya? mmm?"

"I have no idea, maman." You say- it's possible, of course, but not likely at any rate. Though, with Kyou...

Maman laughs. "It be nothing anyway." She says. "De biggest tings were de news about dat Merlin's husban be playin aroun. It be someting ya need ta keep in mind. She got a brain ta figure out the mysteries o de universe, but dat kinda stab in de back a second time be ruinin her if she don't have someone around to cry on, non. She be ya handler, but ya need ta be watchin her. If it be gettin bad... "

She shrugs. "Ya be making de decision." She says. "And I be sayin dat out of professionalism. If She be not making good decisions cos her marriage fallin apart, ya could find yaself in a bad spot on de point end, oui."

You nod- of course maman is also implying that you should be the one she cries on- but she's also got an entirely valid military concern, too. "And de super witches."

1/2
>>
Maman nods. "Dat's outside ya specialty, but ya be de first dey call to tackle de big problems." She points out. "Dat mean ya need ta be developin ya own information network, oui. Ya maman can't be doin everyting foah ya, non. Ya listen to ya maman an ya cozy up to dat Lotus."

You blink. "Lotus?" You ask.

She nods, then smiles. "SOCOM be cryin to maman de day you go wid dat Kyou. But dey end up wid dat Lotus all de same. Ya be cozyin up to dem, maybe ya be able to get a line on moah information ta keep yaself ready for tings ya be running into." She says.

You nod. It's perfectly in keeping with how maman raised you to look at that sort of thing as more or less natural.

She smiles and stands up. "I be keepin track o dis ting with dat Merlin." She says, taking one last fry. "I do no be gettin involved unless it become necessary or ya be askin me to. An be expectin a visit from ya sistah soon."

"Which one?" You ask, and she smiles.

"Natalya." She says, and walks off, letting that be her last word for now.

You sigh, having finished your food. You're tempted to order another already- you know it's not for nothing your mother was considered a harbinger of chaos, but sometimes you forget just how abjectly true that really is.

Ok gents, sorry for the late start! Got roped into restacking all that firewood we split last weekend. Not super fun considering there's prolly close to two, two and a half tons out there. Considering we live in a suburban area with real reliable power, I'm not sure why we have so much, but here we are, haha.

No news past that though!

==============================

So far, Maman's warning about the presence of your sister hasn't come true. Not that that really means anything, of course- with timing as vague as 'soon', she could already be on post or she could be planning to leave in a week. There's really no telling, especially with Natalya, who seems to have an ongoing competition with Maman over who, exactly, is more spooky. You, wisely, have not said anything on the subject.

Checking your watch, you're sure Kyou and Wendy should be back fairly soon- you won't see Mori for at least another day or so, if that soon. Twenty four hours is really the minimum time for them to hold a person for observation, barring another witch coming in to provide post-surgical care, as happened with Kyou.

A distant roar indicates another flight taking off- you look up to watch a quartet of F-14s and a pair of F-20s lift off the end of the runway, all turning to the north as they climb away. You're not sure how long you'll have before either Natalya or someone else finds you- but you figure you might as well use the time you have beneficially. Or at least productively, anyway.

You kick around the idea of heading either down to the wyvern line to check up on the work being done or up to Merlin's office to check in with her about it- she'll have updated schedules and timetables, for sure. You could head back to quarters and get going on something for Kyou and Wendy to eat when they get back- you doubt they'll have stopped for fast food at all.

Or, you think, you could just take a nap. Naps being a productive use of your time is a point on which you and maman have disagreed for years, with you insisting they are, and her insisting they're not. Of course, you've caught her napping in the sun room back home more than once, and you know that at least half the time her reasons for kicking you out of your hammock in the back yard was to claim it for herself.

[] I can head to the wyvern line, so long as I stay out of the way.

[x] I don't really want to talk to Merlin or the Chief just now, I'll head back and make something for Kyou and Wendy

You decide you're not really up for talking to Merlin just now- given Maman's recent revelations on her, it may be a little while before you are- and it's probably best to leave the Chief alone, if even for just now.

With that decided you figure that heading back to quarters and making something for lunch probably isn't a bad idea. You're not quite tired enough to need a nap- not that you ever really need an excuse for one- and you'd rather be awake and moving when Kyou and Wendy get back anyway. It's a short enough walk back that you don't need to call a car either.

You're in the process of checking back in with the desk as someone else enters the room behind you. "Well," a familiar voice says. "If it's not the ghost prince himself. How ya doin, killer?"

You turn to see Spears walking in, clad in a MARPAT uniform. You're not in uniform, of course, so you don't salute, but you nod.

"Scuttlebutt says you snagged one of those invisibility rigs from those ISIS bitches we fought." She continues- you get the feeling she wants to chat, if nothing else, so you wait for her. "S'why you're so damned hard to find."

You shrug. "I've been here same as everyone else." You respond, and she laughs.

"Yeah, like that means a damn thing." She says. "Shit, even I know the fine art of disappearing on demand without leaving, and I'm not from your momma."

You shrug again.

"Let's go grab a coffee." She says, motioning to the small chow hall in the building. "My hippie and boot should be back in another couple, they're seeing the docs."

"Something wrong?" You ask, and she shakes her head.

"Nah, just routine shit. You had a check in yet?"

You shake your head. "Not since we got checked after shifting back."

"Yeah, that's all this is. Routine shit." She says. "I'm out early as usual cos the fuck they gonna find wrong with me anyway?" She laughs. "How about you, where's the rest of your team? I wouldn't mind a chance to catch up with Kyou anyway."

[] They should be on the way back- let's grab that coffee and we can wait down here for them.

Spears' eyes narrow a little. "You offerin me a free lunch?" She asks.

You laugh a bit. "Sure, if you want it." You say. "I didn't plan anything crazy."

She pauses, thinking, then nods. "If the boot or the hippie show up, I'm bringing them too."

"That's fine, I'll make a little extra." You say. "They don't eat an unusual amount, do they?"

She shrugs. "Not really. Besides if there's not enough to go around I'll just make sure the boot goes hungry. He can walk his ass to the exchange anyway."

You laugh a little. "Give me about twenty minutes, then come on up. You know which ones we're in?"

She nods. "Yeah, end of the hall, top deck." She responds. "Fuckin princess quarters."

"I mean, considering Kyou..." you say, and she shakes her head.

"Walked into it." She responds. "Alright, see ya in a few then. I'm still getting that coffee."

You nod as she steps into the mess hall past you.

It changes your plans a little, knowing you might have guests- but it's lunch, which is always a light meal anyway. You had planned to just set out some sandwiches and maybe tray of finger food, but now you're not sure if that's really going to be enough- and it's not like you've got time to make anything more substantial either. You could make a macaroni salad, you guess, and looking in the pantry does indeed reveal several boxes of pasta. There's also some leftovers- though not many, and probably not enough to feed much more than Wendy and Kyou.

[] Heating up these leftovers and making macaroni salad should work just fine.
[] I'll set out some sandwich trays, that should be fine with the chips in the pantry.

[x] I'll set out some sandwich trays, that should be fine with the chips in the pantry.

You decide to set out some sandwich trays- Wendy, treasure that she is, made sure you had several loaves of french bread handy, and you put them to use, though doing so does destroy your stock of cold cuts and sliced cheese. It's not that big a deal, of course, you're sure she'll restock the pantry as soon as she gets a chance, but it does mean no sandwiches till then, which is kind of a shame.

You're just setting out the trays when the door opens and Kyou and Wendy step in, both pausing to take off their shoes in the entry. Kyou nods when she sees you've made something, and smiles at the same time. "Wendy had suggested we stop for our afternoon meal on the way back, but I see I was correct in my guess that you'd have prepared something."

"It does appear I've lost that bet." Wendy says, though she doesn't sound bothered in the least by that fact. "I hope there was quite enough for you, though it looks to be quite a bit of food. Are we expecting company?"

You nod. "Bumped into Spears downstairs." You say. "Invited her to come up and eat with us, she might bring the rest of her team along."

"I see." Kyou says. "And Merlin?"

You shake your head. "Haven't talked to her today yet." You say.

"Ah, that's correct." Kyou says, walking over to the table and looking at the spread. "Your flight this morning with your youngest sister. I had heard some of her classmates were quite jealous."

"I imagine all went well?" Wendy asks. "Young Tatyana is quite talented, afterall."

[] Talented, sure, but she's a brat. She was up there to show off, not practice.

And that's it for the night! I'm making an effort to get to bed a little earlier than I have the last couple weeks, haha. Hopefully that means no more truncated Wednesday runs! Especially since I won't be able to do any make up runs this week at all, with Thanksgiving and all.

Anyway, I'll be around a little bit, maybe an hour or so, to answer questions or comments if there are any, otherwise, till tomorrow gents, cheers!

[x] Talented, sure, but she's a brat. She was up there to show off, not practice.

You frown. "Talented, sure." you agree. "But she's a brat. She was up there to show off, not practice."

Wendy blinks in surprise, and Kyou frowns. "Is that so?" She asks. "Well, that isn't something I'd have expected, but doubtless the youngest is often spoiled."

"It's still rather surprising to hear." Wendy states. "I was under the impression she was quite the dedicated student, and very talented. She certainly plays the part well if she's merely acting."

"Oh, she's talented." You admit- though a little grudgingly, you think. "But she's a brat."

"Perhaps a check now will prevent her from being failed later in her training." Kyou offers. "It is not impossible for a witch to make it through all phases of training and then be denied on suitability grounds at the end, though it is uncommon."

"Nearly happened to me, I'm ashamed to admit." Wendy says, nodding, and both you and Kyou look over at her. She give a weak smile. "Too timid, they said. Eager to please, rather unwilling to go against an aggressive or demanding pilot, should one prefer me."

"What made them decide to send you on?" Kyou asks. "That seems to have been insurmountable, coming as it did from the board."

Wendy smiles again. "The placement board." She says. "I imagine they decided that it wasn't such an issue were I to only ever be on the selection list for pilots with whom I'd not have any problems. Though I sat in pool for quite a long time."

Kyou considers the older witch for a moment, then nods. "Regardless, it worked to our extreme benefit." She states, and you nod. "Now sit, and we will wait for our company."

Wendy hesitates a second. "Would you rather I change?" She asks. "I did lose our bet."

"Not now." Kyou says, smiling. "There will be plenty of time later, I'm sure."

You're about to ask about their bet when there's a knock at the door- Summer, no doubt, you think. "I've got it." you say, before Wendy can get up from her recently occupied space at the table. You open the door to find Summer, along with Lotus and their Pilot out there, all of them in uniform- though both the pilot and Lotus are in duty uniforms, and only Summer is in MARPAT.

"They walked in right as I was headed up." Summer says, indicating her teammates. "So I let them come along."

"Morgan!" Lotus exclaims brightly, stepping through the door. "We've been looking for you, you're about impossible to find, you know that?"

You smile with a shrug. "So they tell me." You say. "You know I've been on post the entire time, right?"

Lotus frowns, squinting at you. "So you say." She says. "But if that was true, how come no one can seem to find you at all other than Admiral Wells? Huh?"

You shrug again.

Lotus takes in a breath to say something, but she's interrupted by a cough. "Oh, right." She says, smiling and half turning. "Sorry Uly. Morgan, this is my pilot, first lieutenant Ulysses Sorensen. Uly, this is Lieutenant... uh.."

"Junior Grade." You provide, and she nods.

"Right! Lieutenant Junior grade Morgan Laroux-Bishop."

You nod, holding out your hand, and Ulysses shakes it, though he doesn't really smile- then again, maman always said marines preferred not to when they weren't contractually obligated to. "Nice to get to meet the ghost prince." He says, and you shrug.

"Not really sure why everyone says I'm so hard to find." You say, motioning for them to sit. "I mean, we've been here a couple weeks."

"It's cos your crew works outside the usual cycle, killer." Spears says. "Like, these two had a visit to the MHU-"

"We're NOT crazy." Lotus interjects, and Spears snorts. "Shut up Spears." She continues seamlessly. "We just had a follow up with them, every couple months we gotta go in for an evaluation, you know?"

You frown.

[x] We talked to a doc after we got cycled back from Korea, but we don't have follow ups or anything.

You shoot a glance over to Kyou, who gives you a slight shrug, and then shake your head. "We talked to a doc after we got cycled back from Korea, but we don't have follow ups or anything." You tell her.

Lotus shrugs. "Well, maybe it's just us." She says, looking over at Ulysses in a mirror of you and Kyou's earlier gesture. "Our initial link was kinda difficult, so maybe they're just keeping an eye on us?"

"That does seem most likely." Kyou opines. "We have had no issues, but I am sure that makes us a minority among crews."

"Ooh, sandwiches!" Lotus says- sidestepping the conversation as she takes a seat. "Oh wow, these look really good. Where did you get the bread?"

"There's a bakery a few miles from the gate." Wendy says. "They're rather nice people, but their prices are somewhat higher than I'd expected."

Louts nods. "Yeah, that can happen." She responds. "People around here know witches have money, and they know the look."

Wendy frowns. "Odd, that. I wasn't bareleg at all, and dressed in civilian clothes. I can't imagine how they should have known."

"Not known the wonderful Wendy?" Lotus asks, blinking then laughing a little. "I mean, even if you're not racing anymore it's not like you weren't the biggest name in that sport for a while."

Wendy pauses, blushing very lightly, then nods. "I hadn't quite thought of that." She admits. "That's rather unfortunate, their bread is quite good."

Lotus shrugs. "It's not common, but they're not the only ones I've ever heard of doing that, if they do." She says, putting two sandwiches on her plate. "Though not usually so close to a base, either. A lot of the military types take that sort of thing pretty poorly."

"With good reason." Kyou says. "They benefit from the protection of the military and, by extension the witches in it, to charge them extra simply because they know a witch makes more is disrespectful."

"It is what it is." Spears says, cutting in. "So we hear you were the ones to splash that flying battleship monster they sent in at the landing beaches. How'd that go?"

"Oh yeah!" Lotus says, and even their pilot, quiet till now, perks up a little at the mention of the Mars. "We saw the wreckage, that must have been one mother of a fight! what happened up there? I mean, we got the reports and all, but that's not the same."

You frown. "They're flying battleships with drone support and an intrusion AI." You say, and Kyou and Wendy nod. "So they're pretty nasty."

"Vinny was telling us about it." Lotus supplies. "Our Wyvern's AI, I mean. Vinny."

"Invincible." Ulysses says. "Your AI's report indicated that working as a pair they were able to defeat an intrusion attempt on the MIU and block attempts to access their own systems."

You nod. "Muninn's got a bit of help in that he's got twice the computing power, we had a rider for a while." You say, "But they were able to deal with it pretty quickly."

"Which is most fortunate." Kyou says. "The attack was not one we were expecting, nor were we well prepared for it."

"I'm more worried about those drones." Spears announces. "How the hell did you deal with them with those little popguns we've got?" She asks Wendy.

Wendy shakes her head. "The fifty caliber guns were quite effective once enhanced." She says. "Though the smaller guns were less so."

"Bout what I figured." Spears responds. "Was thinkin of getting up with Admiral Wells, those rifles we carried when I was with the armor might be just what we need."

"Tank cannons?" Kyou asks. "That seems to be quite a bit of weight."

Spears shakes her head. "Not really, they're rifles designed for tank witches. I mean, yeah, they're big, what girl doesn't like a big cannon, but they're not one-twenty mike-mike like a real main gun. Closer to sixty, I guess. Eight or ten round mag, usually semi or bolt." She trails off with a shrug. "I mean, I don't know, but it's weird how I feel less well armed with two fifties and two thirties than I did with my good looks and a shotgun over Iraq."

Wendy nods. "It is a bit of a challenge." She admits. "We've been trying to work on a solution, but so far none has really presented itself."

"Maybe I can help?" Spears asks. "I mean, look, I'm no brainiac or anything, but I figure I've got almost ten years of shooting for uncle sam under my belt."

Wendy nods. "I'm sure Admiral Wells would be quite pleased if you did offer help." She says. "We are test crew, afterall."

"Speaking of guns." Lotus says, leaning in with a bit of a lascivious grin. "What can you tell us about that one going in on your Wyvern? All your crew could say was it was called Yellowstone and it's some kind of molten metal railgun."

"Linear cannon." Kyou corrects.

[] It's basically a molten metal railgun, yes.

Speaking of upgunning. I am surprused no one has talked about making a gunpod for the valks, something that can be used held in its arms or attached to a pylon depending on what mode its operating in. Steal a little more from the VF-1.

You nod. "It's basically a molten metal linear cannon, yeah." You say. "Kyou knows the specs better than I do."

"Glad to see I'm not the only one." Ulysses says, indicating Lotus. "She's a techno geek like you wouldn't believe."

"One of us has to pay attention, sweetie." Lotus responds, still smiling. "So, a linear cannon, huh? I'd heard rumors about something like that she'd been working on when she was still at lockheed, but I didn't think she was that far along now."

Kyou nods. "It's quite impressive. It functions similarly to a class two railgun, though it also uses a milisecond infrared laser pulse to create a shot channel in the air before the weapon discharges. It's primary damage mode is still kinetic, of course, though because the slugs are molten, there's a much more significant thermal energy element as well."

"It's a class two weapon?" Lotus says, sounding surprised. "It sounds like that kind of thing would have to be a three or a four."

Kyou shakes her head. "Yellowstone is a class three weapon, it draws far too much energy to function without a witch."

"Huh. How soon till they're on the wider market?" Lotus asks, and Spears nods. "I mean, it already sounds like we're going to have to tie Summer up to make sure she doesn't try defecting over here."

Kyou laughs. "The admiral has indicated she has at least one more partial prototype available, but currently that's being used for static testing on a range elsewhere." She responds. "And given the requirements of the weapon system, she's not anticipating more than a low rate acquisition of them once they are cleared for broader use among the fleet."

"Man, you guys get all the neat toys." Lotus says, sitting back in her chair. "And you're the first WCT to go to three flight elements."

Kyou nods. "Though it sounds as if we won't be the last."

"No one knows." Ulysses says. "But rumor is they're gonna start integration as fast as they can clear candidates with existing teams."

"What of the prior method?" Kyou asks. "With crews being allowed to approach their usual wingmates?"

He shrugs. "No one seems to know." he says. "Sounds like it's all a huge mess right now, though."

"Typical navy shit." Spears grumps. "They usually end up like this. Money down we'll end up with two more before everyone has one, and they'll end up with a fourth before we do."

"Preferably not soon." Kyou says, frowning. "We're already anticipating integrating our newest member, another so quickly would be more than we'd be comfortable with."

Ulysses shrugs. "Just relaying the rumors." he says.

"I can't imagine there's so many witches that eager to join the program." Wendy says, frowning. "With a wyvern fleet expansion and now this rumor."

"Have you not seen the aggressor squadron here?" Spears asks. "Shit, probably three quarters of them are trying to break into the program."

"Perhaps they see as it a way into an active line element?" Kyou offers. "Many instructors in the imperial military are the same way, preferring loss of rank or pay to remaining in a training capacity, despite it's critical nature."

"Maybe, but it's no secret the entirely too perfect captain Remi's been sniffing around you guys." Spears retorts. "Her family name may as well be mud, but she's a golden child so far as the navy's concerned."

"She merely has an interest in the combat conditions we've encountered." Kyou responds. "She's indicated no great desire to fly with us, has she, Morgan?"

[x] No, but it wouldn't be too surprising to find out Spears is right.

You shake your head. "No, but it wouldn't be too surprising to find out Spears is right." You say.

The small marine witch nods. "I mean, you're pretty hot property right now anyway." She points out. "Every drake in the fleet got the combat logs from your battleship kill, and you know they're already making comparisons to your old man."

"Though our actions over Korea were hardly to the same standard as Commander Bishop and Admiral Wells' over Siberia." Kyou points out, and Spears shakes her head.

"Naw, but by then he'd been at war for two years, and had another two of peacetime fleet service, and let's be real, that's Merlin fuckin Wells we're talking about." She shrugs. "Even getting close to what she could do is more than any witch can really hope for, even those bonkers ass Soviet superbitches they had."

You nod- Natalya has long maintained that while in almost any realm she's far stronger than Merlin could ever hope to be, in air combat she's completely and comprehensively outclassed. It's one of those things that Maman always just said was the way things were- there's no real reason or explanation at all for it. Just one of those things you accept and move on- and don't put too much thought into it.

"Either way, having her looking at you more than once gonna attract other attention." Spears points out. "Vampire's a fucking legend in the business, she's put the hurt on more than WCT. Surprised she didn't tangle with you at all during your workup."

"How do we know she didn't?" Kyou asks. "We encountered more than one witch, and I'm sure Morgan and his other potentials did as well."

Lotus nods. "Yeah, but ours were air force." She says, then frowns. "At least, I'm pretty sure they were. They were, right Morgan?"

"But the field is still dominated by US navy witches." Kyou points out. "eighty percent of applicants and ninety percent of graduates are US Navy."

Spears shrugs. "Well, I have no idea. Maybe they'll just fire up all that shit we supposedly got from the reds after the war and stuck into Area 51."

Kyou smiles. "I doubt that." She responds. "Even the soviet prject never was able to exceed more than one witch produced every few years. Hardly the numbers the navy would need in order to fill out the proposed program expansion."

"Yeah, I was just thinking what a shame it is we can't all get designer wingmates." Spears says with another shrug.

You shake your head as Lotus blinks. "aw, are we not good enough, sum-sum?" She asks, getting a sideways glare from the smaller witch.

"If I may," Wendy says, before she can respond, "I'd ask how comfortable your couch is?"

You laugh as Spears huffs out her response instead. "Guess it's good enough for now," she says, grudgingly. "Anyway, yeah, though. If Vampire is looking around you guys, you must have made some kind of impression."

>>
"Or she's simply aware that we're always willing to talk to talented and skilled witches." Kyou responds with a shrug. "Though if what you say is true of her, I'd guess she will have her choice of crews."

"And it's a known fact you guys are Admiral Wells' personal team." Spears responds. "I mean, shit, you got me into valkyrie just on your say-so alone."

You shake your head. "That was her decision. We just forwarded your name to her." You point out. "Merlin made the call though."

"Yeah, but either way I wouldn't be here without you having had her ear." She says.

"Man, it must be awesome to get to work so closely with her." Lotus says. "I can't even imagine what she must be like, everyone says she's like a combo of everyone's crush and kid sister." She pauses, and then frowns. "Actually, that's a little creepy now that I think about it."

"It ain't wrong though." Spears says. "Hell, even I don't like to think about disappointing her, and I barely even know her and she's fuckin navy brass."

"If you wish to talk to her, perhaps you could return for the evening meal?" Kyou says, looking over at you- a warning, if nothing else, that you'll need to start cooking, and soon. "She typically joins us for it."

"You're offering more food?" Spears asks, and Kyou nods.

"Of course." Kyou responds. "I cannot tell you what it will be, but- "

"We're in." Spears says, with a look towards her teammates that dares them to protest. "We'll bring drinks."

You, meanwhile, are starting to think you and Wendy are going to need to run to get things to make- Feeding Kyou and Merlin is challenge enough, but Spears and Lotus helped them demolish the lunch you'd set out. Sometimes you wonder how the covens have so much money- by now, you figure, they should have eaten their bank accounts entirely.

And that's gonna be it for the week! Sorry about tonight, I'd completely forgotten the folks were going camping this weekend- I thought it was next weekend- and so I got kinda caught out by it here. I'd planned to run a normal thread, but since I've got to keep an eye on the dogs, and they need to go out every couple hours... well, here we are, haha.

Anyway, that's it for the week, but as always I'll be around to answer questions or comments here or in discord if there are any. Otherwise gents, till next week, cheers!

So, let's see. Not much news here, next week is finals most likely, but this whole semester has been super screwed up, so I don't really know what's going on anymore, haha. I do know there'll be a final test, but IDK what the story is as far as how much time that's gonna take. I don't expect it to impact the run next week, but it might- keep an eye on twitter is all I can say right now.

That's really kinda it for news. If anyone wants a discord link, just say something in here and we'll post a new one!

====================================

You've had to take Wendy grocery shopping again- with at least five, and maybe six witches to feed, the pantry, however well stocked she might have made sure it may be, simply didn't have enough for anything but the most basic of meals. Buttered noodles, it was decided, wasn't really something that was worthy of having guests over for. Still, you're limited on time enough that you can't spend the afternoon- or more than maybe an hour and a half, really- getting things. It's enough time that you can throw together a plan while you're getting the things for it- you're leaning toward burgers, since that'd be the easiest thing to make in the time you've got, especially considering you're pretty sure you can do plenty enough with them to not need to buy a whole lot of food. You're not exactly worried about budget, but you still don't want to get too much.

Wendy had insisted on coming along, while Kyou had preferred to stay in quarters, less concerned with such domestic concerns in general. Overall, that works out for you, you think- she trusts you to handle it, and you'd prefer to do so with limited interference. Wendy, you think, doesn't count- she's nothing if not helpful and while you're pretty sure she feels marginally closer to Kyou than you, if for no other than Kyou fully embracing being Wendy's 'superior'- you're still not sure about all that, to be honest, but Wendy seems happy with the arrangement.

"This will be quite the adventure with Mori to feed as well." She says, while you nod. "She's quite worried your skills in the kichen won't translate to her diet as well."

You shrug. "Vegetarian isn't hard." You say- most dishes you know are fine giving up meat for beans, except seafood, of course. Well, and burgers. "I'm more worried she's going to put it away like Kyou does. That's going to mean a lot of cooking."

Wendy laughs lightly. "Fortunate you have me, then." She says, smiling. "Though I must admit I'm no where near so talented as you in that regard. Still, I hope I'm able to at least help somewhat."

You nod. "I'm glad you're around." You say, not entirely sure how to respond- she's not second-guessing herself or anything, just making conversation.

"As am I." She says, then laughs. "Though by the sounds of things, lady Kyou intends for our household to become rather large. I suspect she's not spoken to you about her interest in the proposed four element combat teams, and her desires, should the navy decide to use them?"

You shake your head. "Not yet."

"I suspect she will." Wendy says, then smiles. "Of course, currently she's attempting to figure out how best to approach you about miss Wells."

[x] I take it she's talked to you some about it?

"I take it she's talked to you some about it?" You ask.

Wendy nods. "Some." She says. "Her great concern is that your prior history with Merlin will prohibit any sort of closer relationship."

"Why does she want one anyway?" You ask. "I mean, as is, we're about as close with Merlin as anyone ever has been, save for maybe dad."

"I believe she desires to have a household that represents an unassailable power base." Wendy says, frowning. "An inner circle of advisors she knows she can trust completely and one that makes her impossible to oppose."

"And that means bedding anyone she lays eyes on?" You ask.

Wendy laughs- you both know you're exaggerating. "I feel as if she may be thinking of this as a favor to you, as well." She explains. "We are, afterall, aware of-"

You nod. "I know." You say- regardless of anything else, you're still not exactly comfortable talking about that with anyone.

Wendy smiles. "Perhaps it would be to both your benefits to allow her to do this?" She says. "Kyou appears to all outside sources as an uninvolved third party."

"And what does that say about her, if she's collecting her consort's crushes?" You ask.

Wendy shrugs. "Nothing particularly untoward." She responds. "The empire's nobility is quite accustomed to the concept of a household coven of sorts, with many witches typically falling with an emperor's inner household. That an imperial daughter should seek the company of many sister witches isn't that unusual. Indeed, the most unusual component of her household would be you."

"Me?" You ask, and Wendy nods.

1/2
>>
"An imperial daughter may sometimes take a husband from outside imperial nobility, but not while she's in the line of succession." Wendy says. "Typically, while in line for the throne, an imperial daughter will avoid marriage, so as to prevent any claimants from arising from outside the imperial family."

"Is that why aunt Katsumi removed herself from the line of succession when she got married to Jess?" You ask.

Wendy nods. "Among others, yes." She responds. "But, either way, for a member of the imperial household, this sort of thing is more or less normal. Kyou will only take one spouse legally, of course, but anyone else in the household is considered the same anyway."

"But it wouldn't be like Dad's house." You state, and Wendy frowns.

"Not precisely, but in some ways it will be." She responds. "Legally there can only be one spouse. Functionally, however, all members of an inner household tend to share equal consideration and privileges under the family member they serve."

"What about protections?" You ask.

Wendy smiles. "You're far less protected than I, should Kyou decide to be rid of us from her life, were that possible." She responds. "As a witch, regardless of the reasoning, should Kyou dismiss me, the imperial coven will see to it I am housed and cared for as benefits a former member of the imperial house. You, on the other hand, would be little more than a commoner again." She shrugs. "Not, of course, that such a thing is possible for us."

[] So does she have any kind of limit on how big she wants her household?
[] It sounds like I need to talk with her about Merlin, then.

[x] So does she have any kind of limit on how big she wants her household?

You frown. "So does she have any kind of limit on how big she wants her household?" You ask.

Wendy laughs. "Well, I certainly can't see it getting much larger." She says. "We'd have quite a lot of trouble all fitting into shipboard cabins, were that to happen."

"That's already going to be an issue." You point out.

Wendy laughs again. You have to admit that, whatever else, getting to see her like this is worth the trouble, at least in your opinion. "It is good, then, that we are all close enough that not having much room is hardly an issue." She points out, then shakes her head. "And I can't see her attempting to maintain a household of more than perhaps a half dozen members, counting herself."

"That's two more." You say, frowning, doing fast math.

Wendy nods. "Perhaps seven, but that would be the most I can see. No imperial daughter has maintained a house larger than that, and most prefer to stop at five or fewer."

"Which would be us plus Merlin." You observe, and Wendy nods.

"To be perfectly honest, it's not hard to see why Kyou is leaning in that direction. Having miss Wells as a member of her direct household would make her a powerful force in the aerospace corporate world, one that all but ensures she'd be very highly places immediately."

"And me." You point out.

Wendy nods. "Yes, that's another consideration. Have you given thought to the possibility?"

Wendy nods. "Lady Kyou said as much."

You look at Wendy, quirking an eyebrow in question.

"You'd never agree to anything involving miss Wells while her marriage persisted, regardless of our opinions on the marriage." She explains.

"Your opinions on the marriage?" You ask.

Wendy nods. "Mine are somewhat different than hers, of course." She says. "You must understand, when they initially worked together, she and Bradley appeared to be quite the pair." She says. "And coming as closely as it did from her return from Japan..." She shrugs. "I feel no small amount of guilt."

"Guilt?" You prompt.

Wendy nods. "It's become clear over the years that we made a mistake in pushing them to get married." She says. "They're not unhappy, clearly, but neither do they seem happy."

You frown. "That's not my read on it at all." You say. "Merlin and Brad just work differently than we do. That's how families are. Merlin's always been a workaholic and Brad's just as bad."

"And her obvious attraction to you?" Wendy asks.

You shrug.

[x] I think we need to drop this now.

"I think we need to drop this now." You say.

Wendy nods. "Of course." She says, then smiles. "I do hope I've not been bad by discussing this. I'd hate to have to be punished."

You shake your head. "Not that long ago you'd have turned redder than a fire truck thinking that."

She laughs. "Not that long ago I felt sure I should start gathering cats." She responds. "Without becoming too emotional on the subject, you and the lady Kyou have given me something I was positive I'd never have. And if I'm a little more forward, well." She shrugs. "It is all rather enjoyable."

"You'd skip dinner if you could." You say, and she nods.

"And most other meals, happily." She says, then smiles. "I'm sure I shall tire somewhat of it in time, but currently, I'm more than happy to do whatever is wished of me, whenever."

"Well, for now, let's worry about dinner." You say, and she nods.

"Of course." She agrees. "I'm afraid I'm not much use with hamburgers, however."

"That's fine, I can still use a hand slicing up the toppings." You say, noticing that your cart is already about three quarters full- and all of it is for burgers. Well, you think, that's the reality of feeding witches. It's funny, of course- many witches eat normal portions, with the flaw of needing so much more food rare up till about a generation or two ago. Wendy, for example, eats normally- and the doctor, when she eats with you, eats like a bird, often unable to finish even one plate. Of course, you know that Lotus can eat a fair bit- and you suspect Spears can put it away like Merlin or Kyou, if for no other reason than that once upon a time, she was a grunt.

"So you'll require my help in the kitchen once we return to our quarters?" Wendy asks, after you've checked out. "If not, of course, I'm sure I can make myself useful elsewhere, but I do find it somewhat relaxing to work with you."

"And distracting." You say.

Wendy smiles. "of course." She says. "But I consider that to be rather a bonus."

"Illicit?" You ask, and she nods.

"Of course." She says, then frowns slightly. "Please don't misunderstand, I'm not protesting anymore, nor do I have any desire to. But there is of course the feeling that what we're engaged in is quite wrong morally, due to my relationship with your father and my age compared to yours and the lady Kyou's."

"You flew with dad during the war, and that means this is wrong?" You ask.

She shakes her head. "No, not at all. But we were close friends, and I do feel as if I owe him a great deal still." She says. "Not that I'd give up this relationship now for it, which is quite selfish, I know, but I still can't help but feel somewhat like a child knowing they're misbehaving. I do still rather wonder what their response will be upon learning of this arrangement."

You shrug. "It's dad. You expect him to have a problem with it?"

Wendy shakes her head again. "No, though I do expect miss Tabitha will likely not approve." She says. "I never have been able to determine what she'd prefer I do." She pauses, then smiles. "Of course, I'm sure Katya would approve wholeheartedly, and I've been told that your mother probably would approve as well."

You nod. "Maman has always preferred to do what feels good and makes you happy. As long as it's all between consenting adults, she's fine with it."

Wendy laughs and nods. "Yes, that's my recollection of her." She says, then shakes her head. "She's an incredibly difficult woman to read sometimes."

"Maman is a big fan of working hard to play hard." You say, then frown. "But her hard work looks like play to a lot of people. She enjoys it too much."

Wendy smiles. "I do recall her seeming rather more carefree than one would expect someone with her reputation to be." She says. "You think she'd approve of our relationship?"

You hold back a laugh. "You kidding?" You ask. "Maman was saying I ought to call you up years ago."

"I see." Wendy says, then smiles. "Perhaps better that you waited, regardless."

"Probably." You agree.

"So, if it's not uncomfortable for me to say so, she approves of your father's arrangement?" Wendy asks. "Or did she ever discuss it with you?"

You shrug. "I think maman would have settled down with him, but it wouldn't have been the arrangement he's got now, probably." Then you frown, thinking about it. "Well, maybe Katya."

Wendy laughs. "I can see that very clearly." She responds, nodding. "But she never seemed the type after that."

You shake your head. "Not at all. Maman likes to be able to wander as she wants." You say, then shrug. "But she's always made it clear she thinks a lot of people would be much happier if they let go of hang-ups and kept the company they wanted to."

[x] Maman includes everyone in that, all the time.

"Maman includes everyone in that, all the time." You respond. The two of you had elected to walk to the commissary- you don't think the distance between the wyvern quarters and the commissary is even a half mile, and it's less than a five minute walk.

"I see." Wendy says, as you step inside and nod to the marines at the duty desk, who look up long enough to recognize you and one of them stands to change your status on the very full dry erase board.

She's quiet on the elevator ride up, and Kyou is in the shower when you step into your rooms- she left the bathroom door open, but neither you nor Wendy take the bait, instead heading into the kitchen to sort out the groceries. Doing the math, you figure that with the ten pounds of ground beef, you should have enough to feed everyone, but it's a little early to start cooking yet- you're expecting everyone in about an hour, hour and a half at most, unless Kyou invited them over sooner.

Wendy, for her part, helps finish unloading the groceries, then sets some water on for tea. You nod- you won't need the stove for a while, though you'll be using the cast iron skillet you noticed was now occupying a space in the pantry. You feel a little guilty about that kind of thing, since you can't take it with you, and it's wasteful to abandon it in place or just have the navy store it while you're abroad. There's provisions for that kind of thing, of course- the navy will happily store household goods for drake crews, so they can feel like they have a real home when they're stateside, but given the palace waiting for Kyou in Japan, you're not sure how much use that'll be for you.

You sit down and flip on the TV as the shower shuts off and Wendy steps out of the kitchen. There's not much on this time of day, and you shut it off after flipping through the channels briefly, not finding anything worth watching.

"American television is disappointing, I've found." Kyou says, standing in the door of the bathroom, clad in a towel. "Our guests should be arriving in half an hour, I invited them over to talk some before we ate. They should include Admiral wells, but the doctor sent her regrets that she'd be unable to join us, as she's occupied with the imperial Wyvern."

You nod, having expected as much.

"Will we be seeing significantly less of her?" Wendy asks.

"I'm not sure yet." Kyou says, though the tone of her voice implies that if she has any say in it, the doctor isn't going to miss too many dinners here. She turns to look at Wendy. "Wendy, you'll find your new uniform item in the bedroom. You're to wear it while we're in quarters."

[] So how inappropriate is this to wear when company is coming?
[] Should I ask, or just wait and see?

Or both.

[x] Should I ask, or just wait and see?

You look at Wendy, then at Kyou. "Should I ask, or just wait and see?"

Kyou smiles as Wendy heads back into the bedroom and closes the door. "It's nothing that would be inappropriate outside of quarters." She says, looking at the door. "Were it not for our uniform dress code, I would have made it mandatory she wear it at all times."

"So it's not nothing." You say, and Kyou laughs.

"Of course not." She says, then smiles in that odd catty way you've noticed Japanese witches have a peculiar talent for. "Besides, is it not true that strategically chosen clothing is far more revealing than mere nudity?"

You blink. "You know, you weren't like this on our trial flight or dinner." You say, and Kyou laughs.

"I could do as Wendy sometimes does, and claim you simply corrupted me." She says.

"But you're not a liar." You respond, and she nods.

"Yes." She says, then crosses the room to sit down next to you. "In truth, I'm not certain what has caused this." She admits. "The usual excuses seem to pale in comparison to the strength of this, and I know that even combined they can't fully explain it. I had considered discussing it further with Wendy and perhaps admiral Wells in time, but for now... " She trails off for a second, then blinks and shakes her head. "Perhaps it is a flaw in my talent?" She asks, looking over at you. "I had considered the thought, but it occurs to me that it's a possibility, is it not?"

You're about to respond when Wendy emerges from the bedroom, dressed largely the same way she was when she went in, save for a thin black choker around her neck. She looks like she's a little embarrassed and more than a little happy to be wearing it- the faint blush contrasting a little with the wide smile on her face.

[] How long have you had that, Kyou?
[] Well, it does look good on you, Wendy.

And that's gonna be it for the night! sorry about the slow updates earlier- first dinner, then I got ambushed with the ever popular "Hey help us get Christmas decorations out of the attic and storage space" haha! Probably be putting those up all weekend, but it's kinda nice to have all the stuff up.

Anyway, that's it for the evening. I'll be around a little yet tonight to answer questions or comments, but otherwise gents, till tomorrow, cheers!

[] How long have you had that, Kyou?
[] Well, it does look good on you, Wendy.

You frown a little, turning to Kyou. "How long have you had that?" You ask.

Kyou smiles. "Since we returned. It was one of the first things I purchased when I was able to do so on our return to Miramar." She says. "Of course, I've had to wait for a good time to present it to her."

"And now was the best time?" You ask, and she nods.

"I believe so." She says, then smiles as she stands up. "Of course, I'm fortunate that I won the bet, otherwise I'd be wearing it's twin."

You blink as she laughs lightly, disappearing into the bedroom and shutting the door behind her.

"Well, it does look good on you, Wendy." You say, taking a closer look at the small accessory- from here it looks like a black band bisected by a metal ring of some kind, with metal studs marking where the leatherworker had to fold it back over to close a loop and hold the ring in place. You're sure there's a clasp of some kind in the back.

Wendy nods, still looking a little embarrassed. "Y-you think so?" She asks. "When the lady Kyou made her wager, I wasn't sure what she had in mind. I must admit this is far nicer a collar than I thought she had in mind."

"Collar?" You ask. "I thought it was a choker."

"They're rather similar, but she referred to it as a collar." She says. "Of course, that implies many things, I'm sure you're aware. She indicated you'd discussed it briefly."

"Very briefly." You say, frowning. "Less than a minute. How long are you supposed to wear that?"

"Oh, I'm not sure. She never specified." Wendy responds. "Though knowing the lady Kyou, this may well be a permanent part of my wardrobe now." She looks... frankly, a little excited by the prospect. "Well, anyway. I think it's quite wonderful that you like it as well."

You nod. "Yeah, I think it does."

She smiles. "I must seem to be quite an airhead now," She says. "Cavorting as I am with a couple much younger than myself, wearing such things. Certainly a much different image than the one most people have of me."

[] So we're cavorting now?
[] The situation is much different as well.

[x] So we're cavorting now?

You grin. "So we're cavorting now?" You ask.

"Among many, many other things, yes." Wendy responds, nodding. "Though perhaps I've been worried a bit much about what the others will think."

"Why's that?" you ask, checking your watch and standing up. "We'd best get started."

She nods, following you into the kitchen. "Well, most of them encouraged me to find someone, though I rather doubt they had quite this in mind. But it always seemed to me that my happiness was their prime concern, and I think it hard for anyone to argue I'm not almost deliriously happy."

"That would be difficult, yes." You admit. "Get the bacon out, please."

"Of course. Shall I start frying it?" Wendy asks, but you shake your head.

"Not yet, we'll save that for the bacon we'll use on the burgers." You say. "We'll use the oven for this, this is going in the burger."

"Ah, I see." She says, tying on an apron then smiling. "Would you prefer I only wore the apron? I can go change."

[] Remember what I said about getting dinner ready on time?
[] Not with us cooking in bacon grease, no. That stuff can burn pretty bad.
[] I'd rather Kyou not try and steal my help, thank you very much.

Safety first. Also messing around with hot oils is a great mood killer if it splashes.

[x] Remember what I said about getting dinner ready on time?

"Remember what I said about getting dinner ready on time?" You ask.

Wendy laughs. "I must admit, it is somewhat gratifying to know that I'm still able to tempt even you." She says. "Even if it would be slightly excessive."

"Not to hear Kyou tell it." you respond.

She laughs again. "No, I suspect she'd be quite happy doing nothing else." She says. "Though I imagine we'd both wear ourselves entirely out attempting to do so. Still, an attempt may be worthwhile in the future."

"Says you." You respond, laughing. "You're not the one staring down reconstructive pelvic surgery in the event."

"Too true." Wendy says, looking thoughtful. "Well, perhaps a thought for later?"

You laugh. "Bacon."

"Oh, quite right." She says, heading over to the fridge. "All of it?"

"Three packs." You correct- you'll leave the last for frying right before you cook the burgers, which should leave you enough bacon grease to get a good flavor on the burgers without it being too much- at a certain point, you may as well just make a BLT, you figure.

She nods, getting three packs of the bacon out. It's nothing fancy at all- just the Smithfield branded crap the commissary had in stock. Shamefully thinly cut and loaded with a lot of chemicals that you're sure affect the flavor- though you'll grudgingly admit it's all maman really cooked with, and you never could really taste anything wrong with her food.

She helps you lay the bacon onto a wire rack set on your one baking sheet- you'll have to do more than one batch, but that's not too big a deal. "I do wonder somewhat about how amusing it is to tease you with my clothing or lack of it." Wendy remarks. "It seems such a silly thing, especially considering it's not as if I lack for attention any more."

You nod. "I'd hope not."

She laughs. "I think, in large part, I'm still convincing myself it is me that's getting the reaction I get from you and the lady Kyou." She says. "It does take some adjusting after a few decades of not, I should say."

You nod again and are about to respond when there's a knock at the door. Wendy shakes her head as you move to get it. "I'll get it, it would be improper for the king to leave his lands." She says, smiling.

She opens it to find Merlin on the other side. "Hi Wendy!" your aunt says. "I'm a little early, I hope that's ok!"

"Oh, it's quite alright, I'm sure miss Wells. Please, do come in." Wendy says.

"Hi Morgan!" Merlin says, stopping by the door to look into the kitchen. "Making dinner?"

You nod. "Burgers." You respond, and she smiles- she likes your burgers almost as much as the chili.

"Are you going to make dessert?" She asks, sounding a little hopeful. "I'd do anything for cake!"

"Best you not say that too loud," Wendy says with a light laugh. "Even if Morgan can't be so easily tempted, lady Kyou certainly can."

Given her laugh, though, Merlin knew exactly what she was doing when she said it. You can only hope Kyou didn't hear.

And that's a really good stopping point for the week! Gives us an obvious lead in for next week's thread, that's for sure!

Not really much news- next week is the last week of class we've got this semester, which means finals. I'm pretty sure that's Monday and then Wednesday is just a clean up day- sweep out the shop, empty the chip bins, that sort of thing- but I'm not 100% sure yet. If there's no news, assume we've got a normal run next week.

As usual gents, I'll be around during the weekend to answer questions or comments, either here or in the discord. But otherwise, till next week, cheers!
