Twenty years ago- years before you were even born, your homeworld repelled an alien invasion which arrived with no warning, no declaration, no communication. The invaders killed tens of thousands of your people before they all suddenly died- killed by their own ships.

On votes with three or more options (not including Write-In), you can designate another option as your second choice. This helps increase the accuracy of votes, but don't force yourself to add one if you legitimately lack one. You have to specifically mark an option as your second choice for it to be counted as one.
Please feel free to ask questions- I am happy to provide setting trivia that isn't relevant in the narrative. If you ask a pertinent question, though, I will generally answer it in an update.

"I was wondering how you were doing." You adjust your phone against your ear. "I have some news, too, but what's up with you, first?"

"Eh..." Jess made a small sound of exertion. "Not a whole lot. I'm not really the most exciting of people..."

You scoff a little. "Oh, come on. You're a Valkan!"

"That really doesn't mean much." Jess sounded amused. "Let's see- I, uh... baked bread for my neighbors... picked some berries after nearly killing the whole bush twice, ah... er... failed at some pottery?"

"Pottery?" You keep your voice light. "That sounds fun, but why?"

"It's something to do, teach myself a bit of the Art. I'm not that good at just... normal pottery, though. So I'm learning..."

"Magic pots?" You quirk an eyebrow. "What's the point of those?"

"Ah, well I've only got this rickety old gas fridge, so I was thinking about trying this old enchantment that makes food keep inside a container... problem is, you kind of have to be good at the original art first before an enchantment will take-" Jess grunted over the line, and you heard a faint ripping noise. "Ah! Stubborn bugger. But, uh..." She caught her breath. "It's not really that interesting. How are you?"

It honestly sounded a little interesting to you, but you took a breath and answered her anyway. "Well, you're talking to someone who managed to get herself some implants."

You could hear Jess stop on the other end of the line. "...huh?" She finally managed. "I mean- that's... that's great, but how?"

You lean forward. "The story is a bit of a trip, trust me."

Sorry about the delay in getting it up. Power outages combined with internet outages- legit, I'm not sure how I'm posting right now considering my modem claims I'm offline. So there's that.

I've noticed there are a few items in Tiiris' possession that I didn't manage to log into the inventory. Part of the delay was due to me trying to look back through previous updates for anything I might have missed. If you know about something that's in your possession that's not on the inventory pastebin, it'd be cool if you could let me know.

The item's qualities didn't change / update but we do know where it came from and what it does to a degree so it probably doesn't count as 'unknown' anymore.

What ship was she from again? One of these days we're going to run into someone who gets royally pissed
that we made the Tanoh blow up.
Also, side note, I wonder if we could think of something useful for our other robutts or Xol who are currently idle to do. Set up a robot dance troupe or assign them to crunch folding@home data or something.

I live in Oregon. It's been really crazy this year. Power really only goes out every once in a while due to winds, but the internet interruptions are a pain in the ass. Like clockwork, around midnight each night. I actually got a message from my ISP saying they were doing work in the area last week, so maybe that's what's causing it.

"It's a bit of a mouthful to explain over the phone..." Your tone becomes a little sheepish. "Lots of different... things happened, kind of one after the other. It's a bit complicated."

"You're not in any kind of trouble, are you?" Jess' voice turned concerned.

"Oh, uh, no. Not at the moment, anyway." You cough. "Point is, would you like to meet in-person?"

"My door's always open." Jess replied. "Unless-" She put on a country affectation. "-you want a country bumpkin like myself to come up to the big city, where buildings fly and everyone lives in the basement."

You snort. "Wasn't my plan, but I'll have to check. See, there's someone I'd like you to meet, as well..."

Just our friends. Mum isn't strong enough to travel yet, Dad would probably have a heart attack if he saw what we get up to (or just be awkward) and I want to keep Joran on a need-to-know basis really, since this isn't something he needs to get involved in. I suppose since she's not on the coast we can't spring Xol on her so easily either.

"There are two, actually." You swap the phone to your other ear. "There's another Valkan friend of mine- I don't know if I mentioned him or not, Elan?"

"I think you mentioned a second friend before, yeah." Jess sounded unsure. "Does he need something from me?"

"Ah, no, not really. I just sort of want to catch up and introduce you two. The other person I want to bring does need something from you, though." You clear your throat. "It's an AI who's trying to find it's new owner, I was wondering if maybe you knew them?"

Jess' voice immediately perked up. "Oh, that's sweet of you. Do you know who it's looking for?"

"Yeah, Karan aust Kharaki and Vaar aust Tanoh? Ever heard of them?"

"Ah... I'm not personally acquainted with either of them, but I'll ask around my little community and see if anyone knows them. I'm sure someone will have an inkling if they survived."

You smile. "Thanks, I'm sure LT will appreciate that."

"Tell it I said hi." Jess' voice shifted to a teasing tone. "So, should I roll out my guest bed for the two of you, or will this just be a day trip? It's, uh, school's out this time of year, isn't it?"

"Yeah, we're on summer break right now..." You nod, then remember Jess can't see it.

Outskirts of Reese
Saturday, 23rd of 6th, 1173. 4:00PM.

"This person lives all the way out here?" Elan asked, carefully steadying himself against ST's rocking by holding out and grabbing one of the handles mounted to the door frame. "Is there even a road?"

"Ah..." You peer out the bottom of the passenger window. "I think we technically left it a few minutes ago."

"Great..." Elan sighed, grunting a little as ST tossed him to the side again. "This is the kind of thing that used to be a big 'imminent broken bones' thing for me, you know?"

"Why do you think I waited until now to bring you here?" You ask with a little smile. A gap in the trees appears, and you perk up, pointing towards the clearing as it appears. "See? That wasn't so bad."

"Says you..." Elan grumbled. "The last time I went hiking was... ah, right, never."

You ignore him, instead peering out into the trees at the approaching shape of Jess' small cabin. Jess herself was out on the front porch, busying herself with something in her hands. She glances up as ST rolls over the few final bumps in the road before coming to a stop at the small patch of dirt that was effectively her driveway.

You wave at Jess as you clamber out of your seat, ignoring Elan carefully making his way around the less dry and plant-covered sections of the forest floor.

Jess politely waves back, but instead of immediately answering, she merely peers at you as you grow closer to her. "...spirits, you actually got your implants in."

"Oh, uh... yeah!" You smile, and turn slightly to either side for her benefit. "Sorry, it's kind of hard to remember that I didn't always look like this..."

"It's a bit like that with shapechanging..." Jess slowly looks you up and down, a slightly analytical look appearing on her face. It's broken when Elan finally comes up to her. "And this is your friend?"

"One of them." You say. "Elan, this is Jess. Jess, this is my friend Elan."

Jess smiles at Elan as he trudges up, then holds out a hand for him to shake. "Nice to meet you."

"Y-yeah, you too." Elan stammers slightly, clearly nervous at the prospect of meeting another Valkan. He stumbles a little when she grasps his wrist instead of his palm, but recovers enough to adapt to the strange handshake. He stares at her a little overlong- whether that was nerves or simply not expecting the Valkan to be a pretty girl, you couldn't tell.

"Didn't you say you were bringing one more?" Jess asked curiously. "I could have sworn..."

"Oh, yeah." You turn to ST. LT didn't exactly have a body at the moment, so in order to bring it to Jess so it could talk to her, you had...

>Asked one of your drones to swap shells with it temporarily.
>Had ST vacate it's body so LT could occupy it.

ST's body - or, what was formerly ST's body - began to unfold, splitting open and curling in on itself as it hefted up onto two legs. Elan started slightly at the sudden motion, whirling around a bit to look at it, while Jess merely smiled warmly at it.

LT9093 had a... distinct way of transforming, compared to ST. It wasn't necessarily unusual to your understanding, but it was noticeably different to the extent that it made it obvious that the chassis was being directed by a different intelligence. Little things - from the way that ST would fold it's weapons back and over it's body, but LT would lower them ahead of itself - to how ST always landed wheels-first when transforming into a car, but LT always ended with the wheels.

ST had been somewhat wary about the idea of giving up it's chassis to LT, and you had to agree with it, but you also weren't sure you could ask SX2404 or UP8903 to do it, either. They technically served you, but you didn't exactly know either of them well enough to ask them to give up their bodies. You knew that if you asked them, they would likely consent, but also that they would also probably kill someone for you. So it was somewhat of a moot point.

In your bag at the moment was the datacore that LT had used before, which as of now was occupied by ST. In the event that you found LT's owners today - unlikely, but possible - the plan was to transfer him over to them and restore ST to his former body. If not, you'd move LT back over to the Rontah after today.

Bringing itself up to it's full height, LT lumbered over the front of Jess' cabin. It lowered itself carefully down, bringing the main camera down to eye-level with everyone else.

"Well, aren't you a cute little thing." Jess gave a friendly smile, reaching up to gently pat the side of LT's chassis. "Tiiris told me you lost your owner?"

"I hope not." LT replied quietly.

Jess' smile turned a bit sad, then she glanced to you and Elan. "Well, dinner's soon." She turned, and picked something out of a large wicker basket, turning to you with a brown root in one hand and a paring knife in the other. She smiled at the two of you. "And since I knew I was going to have some free labor, I figured you two could help me cut everything up."

---

Jess' Cabin
Saturday, 23rd of 6th, 1173. 5:00PM.

"So." Jess leaned back in her chair, pulling her knife across the root with a well-practiced flicking motion. "You had something to tell me?"
>>
>>4634616
You fumble with your knife a little. The three of you were huddled around Jess' kitchen table- where you and Kara had had tea with her before. Out one of the windows, you could see LT's single camera peering through into the room, silently listening to the conversation. Occasionally, it's manipulation cable would slip through the window at a burst of static from Jess' adjutant, performing some minor task on it's behalf while the three of you prepared the food. Your implants were keeping your hand nice and steady, but you just didn't have the muscle memory that Jess and even Elan seemed to have down. So, while you managed to avoid cutting yourself, you were moving somewhat slower and with greater care than they were. "Yeah, well..."

"Did you hear about the Tanoh?" You ask carefully.

"The Tanoh?" Jess made a face. "No, why?"

You think for a second, trying to figure out how to put the events into words.

"Did they finally get inside?" Jess followed up, glancing your way. You must have been making some sort of expression, as she made a quizzical expression.

"It... sort of blew up?" You hazard.

"Wait. What?" Jess shook her head and leaned forward, wide-eyed. "They shot it by accident and the magazine went up."

"'By accident'..." Elan rolled his eyes over to look at you. "And who was responsible for that happening?"

"I was getting to that!" You hold up your hands, before looking back to Jess. "Yeah, uh, I was sort of rooting around in it and, uh, kind of scared the military into action when I... uh... launched from it."

"You launched in a Valkan ship in front of the military?" Jess asked, her expression starting to gradually shift from shock into derision. "Tiiris, of fucking course they shot at you. I would have shot at you, and I'm Valkan! That probably was one of their worst cast scenarios, and you probably scared the shit out of them."

"I didn't mean to!" You protest. "What kind of reasonable person just shoots as soon as something spooky happens?"

"Jittery soldiers versus Valkans?" Jess rubbed her head carefully. "Reason goes out the window, I bet. I've seen how less advanced civilizations get around us. Had plenty of records when I was a kid. People don't behave rationally when you scare them."

"...oh." You say quietly. In the back of your mind, you remember that you opened the Tanoh's guns in order to distract the military while you launched. Nothing lethal, of course, but something to keep them occupied. That probably helped to spook them.

"It got me my implants..." You pout.

"So I noticed..." Jess drawled. "I'd judge you, but I'm not completely sure I wouldn't have done something similar for a rack like that at your age."

"I-I didn't know about that until after I got them in." You feel your face heat up. "I just didn't want to die..."

Jess' face fell slightly, but she recovered her smile after a second. "Hey, well it came with a lot of good things, didn't it? I bet you're feeling a lot better these days." She reached out and waved her hand in front of your eyes. "No glasses."

You smile a little. "That's been pretty nice, yeah..."

"And I'm sure you've been enjoying being able to connect to your..." Jess gestured at LT, then stopped. "Er- well, the other guy."

You frown a little. "I actually haven't really delved into that much, yet. I'm still trying to figure all this out, and I don't want to screw it up without knowing what I'm doing."

"Eh, life's meant to be lived. Sure, it's a good idea to be cautious, but you can't let that rule you. Throw yourself into it, and things will come naturally to you."

"Riiight..." You drawl, images of Wander coming to your mind, then the Tanoh itself. Despite working out in the end, you're not entirely sure you'd call the outcome of either of those situations 'graceful'. You cough. "Uh, so what about my friend here?" You gesture to LT. "Do you know anyone who could help him?"

"Well, I can message my other Valkan friends like I said, find out if anyone knows where they are, if they're dead, so on. If they do, I'll pass it on." She jerked her thumb out towards one of the windows. "One of them is even more of a hermit than I am. She lives waaay deep in the forest, but I figured if she knew anything I could send your friend right over to her."

"Might she be...?" LT asked hopefully.

"Unless she's been lying to me for a decade, no." Jess smiled. "She's good people, though." She glanced your way. "I don't suppose you'd be interested in meeting her, though?"

Something I'm curious about. When Elan turns into a girl does his feelings, thoughts, senses, desires change into the other personality's or remain the same?
>>

That's probably something to ask him about directly. From what you know about how shapeshifting works, you need to get into the head of someone - want to be them, believe you are them - beforehand, so that answer is likely related.

"If she's willing to meet." You smile. "I'm always happy to meet non-psycho Valkans."

"That's most of us, you know." Jess arched an eyebrow slightly, then paused and reconsidered. "Well, I suppose the number used to be higher, but they tended to not last too long on Tagara. Most of them went down with the Fleet."

"One of the first Valkans I met tried to bash my head in with a tire iron." You say, raising an eyebrow.

"Ah..." Jess opened her mouth and closed it, holding her knife up. "...got me there. He really did? Why?"

"I... never quite figured it out." You frown. "I suppose he was part of some cult and wanted my stuff?"

"Yeah, but a tire iron?" Jess asked. "Where the hell did he do this?"

"...backroom of an arcade in Miir?" You answer sheepishly.

"...weird." Jess finally said. "I'm- that doesn't make much sense to me. Are you sure he wanted your stuff?"

"Pretty sure..." You murmur. "Either way, I never stuck around to find out."

Jess nodded slowly, looking down at the vegetable cuttings in her hand. She took a breath. "Either way, how about you two get these into a pot and we'll put this on to boil?"

You stand up, and Jess produces a large pot from... somewhere, placing it on her old, gas-powered stove and lighting the burner. The large platters of diced vegetables the three of you had been slowly making are turned over into the pot, and a healthy portion of water and spices are added by Jess as her adjutant, which fusses with the burner dial while the rest of you monopolize the pot.

As you work, you can't help but feel a strange sense of... being watched. You look up once or twice, staring out into the trees, but notice nothing except the slight orange color of the clouds as the sun begins to set. The second time the feeling comes, you peer more intently, thinking you might perceive a data tag or some sort of drone out in the forest, but once again come up with nothing.

Can Tiiris still use Valkan-vision by closing her eyes?
>>
>>4651749
>Ask Jess about it.
She would know wouldn't she.

We should ask whether or not she has any ideas for getting to Kana somehow.

She'd know about any local weirdos.

Concentrate and focus on the feeling. Detect for signs of Valkans or their tech. Dangerous people are out there.

>Ask Jess about it.
It's probably her backup plan in case of trouble.

This and warn Jess about it too

Well, the power has been out for nearly an entire day at this point. So no idea when I'll be back with the update.

See you on a new thread?
>>
>>4654904
Probably. The incompetent fucks at my electric company just said it could be more than a week until I get power back. If someone could do me a favor and archive the thread with the normal tags that would be great, as I only have a phone here.

I seem to have power back, but we got it way ahead of what I was told (minimum 3 days, possibly up to ten) and the line of clearing and repairs hasn't reached where I live yet. So it's probably not stable, but we might get an update here before the thread is out.
