You're the most dangerous and proudest kind of monster there is- A Dragon. You will be, that is, you haven't been born yet. At the moment you are only a Dragon soul, made from two other Dragons doing something you don't have the context for, and a powerful feeling of furnace warmth and primal terror surrounds you.

You understand you need to choose a color and you need to choose an egg.

>What color of Dragon are You?

>Red: Fierce and Proud. Their breath is fiery.
>Blue: Cunning and Treacherous. Their breath is lightning.
>Green: Stealthy and Pragmatic. Their breath is poisonous.
>Black: Mighty and Cruel. Their breath is corrosive.
>White: Savage and Feral. Their breath is frozen.

>Which is your egg?

>The smooth egg in the ruined temple (You sense that there are doting kobolds here.)
>The yellow egg in the wizard's tower (You sense that you will be the wizard's familiar.)
>The cracked egg in the wilderness (You sense that if you survive, you will be strong.)

Also, OP it's "most prideful". "Most proudest" doesn't work.
>>
>>4708694
if you're gonna grammar nazi, at least do it right, "most dangerous" and "proudest" work individually and the phrasing is ambiguous if you attach most to proudest,

The choice of color is easy. You decide you will be a Red Dragon, fierce and proud, with fiery breath. The choice of egg is harder but you eventually decide the cracked egg is better than the smooth egg. Strength comes before authority. You feel a questioning from the feeling surrounding you, asking if you are sure, and you return frustration that it would dare attempt to give you second thoughts. There is amusement now and you can feel your soul being pulled! Too late, you sense that hatching from the cracked egg won't make you stronger, it only means that if you're going to survive at all you must be strong!

>Somewhere in the western forests, a hard-shelled egg the size of two fists trembles and shudders. There is a crack running down the side and it's clear that this birth is a premature one. The creature in the egg mewls and punctures the shell, pushing it away. It is tiny enough to fit in the palm of a hand, with soft, pinkish skin and furious, wrathful eyes.

You don't remember anything about your choice. Only that you've broken out of your egg somewhere in tall grass. There's shade from the sunlight overhead and you feel naked. More than naked, you feel fragile and vulnerable. There's no fear though. You know you will be the deadliest creature in these woods. Your wings flop uselessly along your back. You will be.

You consume the eggshell. It is very crunchy and satisfying. The yolk feels thicker than it should be but that might be because you hatched early. Your body is very soft and doughy but your fangs are sharp and your jaw is strong. You're able to consume everything. This was your first meal. If you are lucky and cunning it won't be your last. You are very angry that there's no more eggshell to consume. Maybe you should find another egg and consume it.

You cannot stay out in the open like this. Not until you have the strength to devour your foes and destroy everything they hold dear. You aren't sure where anything safe could be found. You feel that you're too exposed in the tall grass. You aren't the only predator in this place. You need to find somewhere to hide until you can grow. You instinctively know that to grow you need to eat but that isn't as important as making sure you aren't eaten. It takes you a long time to look and you find a cowardly furry creature even smaller than you are but it runs into a tree and escapes. That makes you angry but you're satisfied, because you've found somewhere worthy of your fleshy majesty. A hollow in a rotting tree stump. You feel like you can remember where it is but shouldn't count on that. There is some moss as well.

You know you can't hunt efficiently like you are now so you swallow your pride and eat it. Pathetic. There's a lot, it isn't filling, but there is a lot. You're frustrated by this and by your weakness but it's dark and you're starting to feel sleepy. You feel the warmth return while you curl up but this time it's coming from out of you instead of around you. There aren't any dreams. Only the digestion of everything you've eaten as you hibernate... and grow. You know that your premature birth has left you infantile and vulnerable but Dragons are a proud race, and Red Dragons the proudest of all! You will survive and you will grow stronger.

>+1 Fortitude
You reawaken in the rotten tree hollow and your instincts tell you the sun has risen and set seven times since you hibernated. Wait. Seven? Uh... then eight, then nine? You think that's how it is. Being a Dragon, you have instinctual knowledge far superior to the lesser races. All you need is the strength to take advantage of your blood. You look around. The tree hollow hasn't moved and some moss has regrown. You hesitate to eat it, because you can feel that you're mightier than before. When you first hatched, your body was weak and fragile but now your bones have thickened and your blood runs hotter. You think you can endure more but not by much.

What you need is food. You need to hunt but you are too slow, weak, and imperceptive to hunt. This frustrates you. The small furry creatures are far too swift to catch unless you become lucky but they are the richest source of meat. Better than the eggshell. Meat. You catch yourself drooling and stop. There are even tinier skittering things that are fast but everywhere and pathetically weak. It would not be difficult to consume them but it would be tedious. Then there is the moss. You sense that you would need to consume much more to grow full and some part of you finds eating moss, not meat, disgusting. You need to eat something. Your instincts tell you that there are more dangerous creatures in this place than the small furry ones and tiny skittering ones. You must be careful not to get caught.

You pursue the tiny skittering creatures and though most escape, there are more anywhere you turn your fangs. You continue consuming them, staying away from the brightly colored ones and focusing on the slower moving walkers. You even catch a hoppy one which was satisfying but difficult to catch. You repeat what you did yesterday and are less successful, but only slightly. You consume enough of the tiny, skittering creatures to fill your stomach and when the sun sets, you creep into the rotting tree hollow and slumber. You're hibernating again. You feel if there's any advantage to hatching prematurely, it's that most of your growth has already been done for you and you're only building on the foundation the egg made. It's still bitter to think you're struggling to reach a normal hatchling's power. In the future, this may be more difficult.

You reawaken in the rotten tree hollow and your instincts tell you that the sun has risen and set only one time since you hibernated. That's fast, insanely fast. So fast you wonder if anything has actually changed and then you crawl out of your sleeping spot and are stunned. Everything is much clearer than before. For the first time, you can see the leaves on the trees and the small, furry creatures scrambling on it. You are frustrated by them but the tiny skittering creatures are much clearer to you now. You realize that you can hunt them much more efficiently than before and the faster you hunt them, the faster you can grow, which means the faster you can take your vengeance on the small furry creatures.

You're tempted to seize your vengeance on the small, furry creatures but think that can wait. It's better to consume the tiny skittering creatures than to be shamed by their cowardice for a second time. Especially now that your senses have sharpened.

Your rage is overwhelming and so is your hunger. Only days ago, there were countless tiny, skittering creatures wherever you looked and now, they're gone! They're hiding from you and now you can't eat them! You're infuriated by this. Something else has happened too. The clouds have started to rain and now everything is wet and muddy. Your rotting tree hollow is dry but if this continues it will also be wet. You don't like being wet. You don't like that the forest is wet. You are very, very upset.

You go to sleep and awaken hungry. It's still raining. You don't know when it will stop.

>4/3 successes
You want to find somewhere dry but where is dry? You look at the wetness and notice a pattern. There are puddles forming below your rotten tree hollow. Does that mean if you went higher, there would be less puddles? There's only one way to find out. You leave the rotten tree hollow behind. It's served its purpose, what matters is your survival. You search for higher ground and find a hill sloping upward. You crawl on the slope, getting slicker with mud, and are on the verge of giving up and trying to find the rotten tree hollow again when you stumble on something. There's a hole going into the side of the hill. It was hidden behind some brush but you stumbled into it and are now able to see inside. There are a couple of tiny furry creatures, larger than the skittering ones but smaller than the tree climbers. They sense you and try to run deeper inside but there's nowhere to hide. You salivate at the thought of consuming them, but... You don't know what they're capable of. They could be dangerous.

>Consume these pathetic creatures and seize their hole as your own!
>Leave the cowards to their hole, you can find a better one of your own.
>Force them out, and let them live so you can- bwahahaha, you're a Dragon, not a homesteader!

What a magnificent feast you have found. You force yourself into the pathetic tunnel, pushing it wider to accommodate your fleshy, shaking body, and then you sink your fangs into the nearest of the two creatures. It squeals and thrashes but it's too late. You might be a small and weak creature now, and the forest may ignore you now, but here, now? You are doom and for these pitiful vermin there is no hope. The taste of the meat and blood is like nothing you've ever felt before, but it's even less than the feeling of the power you have over the weakness of these two, worthless morsels.

An hour later you've eaten your full and are resting in a snug pile of crunched bones and wet gore. You're so full, you're bloated and can barely move aside from fluttering your wings. You sense that with this much meat, you can hibernate for much longer than before, and if you can hibernate longer than before, you can grow much faster than before. Excellent. The sooner you can grow, the sooner you can take your vengeance, the sooner this forest can burn...

You reawaken in the small furry creatures' hole and your instincts tell you the sun has risen and set seven times since you hibernated. Something feels different. It's dry outside but that doesn't matter. Your movements don't feel as sluggish anymore and when you take a step, your leg goes right where you wanted it to instead of fumbling! A few days ago, you thought being able to see the leaves on the trees was impressive but now you can see them in much more detail! You growl at the thought of how much more hatching from a cracked egg has robbed from you. Growling won't get you anywhere. If you want what was taken from you, you must seize it, like those small furry creatures' pathetic lives and their pathetic hole!

Those creatures were rather tasty and much easier to hunt than the other small furry creatures. It might even be more efficient to postpone your vengeance to hunt down some more. There must be more of their hidey-holes hidden through the forest. You need to find them, and then, you need to consume them whole! They cannot resist you! No force they can muster can withstand your might! You are their destruction! You are death! You will be, anyways. That last nest was extremely well-hidden...

Only two weeks ago, you were almost blind and deaf, relying on your sense of touch to navigate the forest around you. If you tried to search for the hidey-holes back then you would've needed a miracle, just like the one that led you to the first, but now you don't need a miracle. You don't need any kind of luck, because you can see where the brush was broken by the smaller furry creatures' tiny little feet and when you know where they are, there's not a single thing the tiny little creatures inside can do to stop you. They weren't as delicious as the last but they are close. You don't even bother to find the previous hole. You just curl up in this one and drift into sleep.

You reawaken in the small furry creatures' hole and your instincts tell you the sun has risen and set seven times since you hibernated. You growl and scratch the dirt with the soft, dull nubs of your back foot. You're starting to notice a pattern. More importantly, you feel something has changed. Your movements are much smoother and faster than before. With this, taking your vengeance isn't tempting shame. It's reclaiming control, as is your right as the greatest of creatures: a Dragon! You admit that you feel somewhat disturbed by your nakedness. Your flesh is soft and feeble, you have no claws and your wings are dangling. This weakness is humiliating. Rending the flesh of something weaker should make you feel better.

Soul is a little more complicated than the others. Magic is related to it, but also to Cunning, and not innate to a Dragon like Soul is.

>>4713962
If everyone wants to max tubby, you can, but it won't do much for your survivability. Dragons usually hibernate when they have food stored, a Dragon getting fat instead of muscle would be unusual. It's possible and might be slightly more resilient than straight muscle but a lot less mobile.

You reawaken in the small furry creatures' hole and your instincts tell you that the sun has risen and set four times since you hibernated. You're pleased by this. The faster your hibernation cycles go, the sooner you can reach your true potential. You try to sense what changes happened this time but they're subtler than before. You think about this and come to a sudden realization. The vague confusion in your head has disappeared and when you try to think, you can visualize the dead small furry creatures with ease. This was a minor improvement but it's a major step forward. You aren't wheezing anymore either, which is also good. You feel an unsettling urge to consume in the back of your head. It's not a bad thing but compared to the usual hunger its intensity is a little unsettling.

Fat isn't better than muscles for defense, it's better at handling raw damage. More like 1/2 Fortitude, and a -1/2 Muscle/Agility and -1 Wings, because you have to haul that around as well. Scales are the defense stat. I think it might be better to have you decide on your frame when you mature than to have a separate stat, which will happen if you keep growing. I don't have a problem with it being a stat, it's just that you consume most of your stored food when you hibernate.

>>4714156
Right now you don't have much of a furnace. You also don't have any scales. If winter comes early you could be in a bad situation.

so it would improve our about to absorb a hit then, I like it, it's a novel enough idea to me to chuckle at is so why not do it. I also think having us pick our frame once we mature rather than have a new stat is likely a good idea.

Extremely hard, actually. You took two days and couldn't find another hidey-hole so you resorted to eating more the tiny skittering creatures. It's very shameful and you only started later in the second day so you're very hungry. You're very angry as well. You're really not having a good time. A few of the leaves on the trees are turning brown. You don't have any strong feelings on this one way or another.

You think the difference between the small furry creatures you've been hunting so far is that the ones that dig holes are easy to catch but hard to find, and the ones that climb the trees are easy to find but hard to catch. >>
>>4714774
yeah scales, breath and fort sound good, as for muscle, I'll be honest, anon has really sold me on going for the chubby dragon idea I can't imagine a chubby dragon would be cold in winter
>>
>>4714777
QM said chubby dragon isn't going to be a thing until we pick our frame when we grow up

Besides, even if we DID get chub we'd need muscle to actually haul it around.
>>
>>4714778
true, need a strong foundation to build on after all
>>
>>4714782
Muscles and scales then. Muscles might be able to work in place of claws if we can brute force our pray into submission, and we'll need scales to protect from any wounds we might get.
>>
>>4714784
Muscles->Scales->Claws, then? And then trying to lure out larger prey?
>>
>>4714784
I think scales, breath, then muscle, we need to focus on winter survival first, and staying warm will be critical over hunting larger prey the bugs will keep us going for now
>>
I'm still in favour of specialising in being a very perceptive, very agile, eventually clever bastard who doesn't care much about muscle or scales or all that, because the weak can be bullied either way, and the strong are better avoided either way.

>>
how about we refocus and let this topic die, for now, I want to get scales as soon as we can, we need them for surviving winter maybe level our breath up again for warmth?
>>
Like I said earlier, I don't care if the dragon has blubber like a whale or walrus or whatever, I just don't want this to degenerate into a fetish thing. Thus why I proposed the QM just not focus on it at all whatever wins. Both >>4715385 and >>4713962 are obnoxious.

>>4715415
Scales are definitely a priority, but I think we should value getting all our things up to 0 vs. double-leveling any of them. Being larger than a hatchling will also help us survive the winter.
>>
>>4715421
>Being larger than a hatchling will also help us survive the winter.
that is true, but it will also mean we will need to either expand our den or find a new one. maybe we upgrade our claws before our size so we can dig out our den more

Fine, I get it, you guys just want to chill and fun with the quest and I'm ruining that vibe. But I can't help but overreact get heated with stuff like that.

Moving on, I agree we should focus on scales and muscle for heat insulation for upcoming winter, so far we seem like to be going for an all rounder build that could just because we're getting all stats up to something atleast not completely useless.

looking at it these are the stats we still need, I think we go claws and scales first, we will need the claws for expanding our den, and the scales for winter prep, I think those two are our most important ones right now. then maybe soul and muscle? I think soul might be magic, and muscle for physical fighting, or maybe do wings instead of muscle, gaining the ability to fly would be nice

>>4715451
keep bringing it up, your only making people want to vote for it more.
>>
>>4715453
Muscle can also fall under winter prep imo, I don't think we'll want to be exposing thin wing membranes to cold/snow. That can come in springtime.

>>4715453

>>
>>4715463
hmm, that is a good point, in my view when winter hits the less we are outside the better. making food runs to animal dens as needed sure, but for the most part, waiting out winter. meaning sure wings or muscle work for me.

>0/3 successes
They did it again. You did exactly what you did the last time, and they did it again. It's been three days and they're sitting there, on the top of that tree, mocking you. The insufferable chittering is deafening and it comes from all directions. You snarl, biting at the tree bark, and they hop to another and chitter back. The rational part of your brain tells you that they're only lesser animals, not capable of comprehending their actions, but the instinctive part KNOWS that they do this to belittle your hunger.

It has been three days and you haven't stopped since. You're beginning to starve. You don't know how much longer this is going to last, but then your heightened senses catch a whiff of smoke on the wind. You strain and catch a distant black plume rising over the treeline. Though you've never seen fire before, your instincts know exactly what this is, and more, what this might entail. Unimaginable danger, but perhaps, opportunity.

>Choose an action:

>Go to the smoke and make no effort to conceal yourself.
>Go to the smoke and keep to the shadows, you're defenseless.
>Ignore the smoke and try to hunt something, anything to avoid starving.

We've been picking the hardest things to hunt, and even then had an improbable chance at failing. It's not a difficult DC. Do you really think the odds of the humans being friendly to a future man-eating tyrant is higher than the odds of catching bugs on a modified DC of 2?
>>
>>4715894
You think the DC will be a 2 while starving, yeah sure
>>
>>4715897
We are "beginning" to starve and clearly have enough energy to spend days yelling at squirrels. Bugs are not a high-energy prey. At max I'd guess a -1 malus, in which case it's a wholeass DC of 3-- which is like a 7/8ths chance of making it excluding crits. I would pin the odds of hostile humans at higher than 7/8ths.
>>
>>4715901
*higher than 1/8ths
And if there's no DC penalty, it's like 1 in 36 that we fail (again excluding crits which I think should cancel themselves out anyhow).
>>
>>4715903
>>4715901
That all being said I'm fine with getting slightly closer to the fire as long as we do so *while hunting.* I am not fine with staking our life solely on a random event.
>>
>>4715912
see in my view I have no faith in hunting at this point and would rather take the chance and roll the dice on the fire
>>
>>4715927
But that's not how hunting works. It's not that we've suddenly gotten really bad at it, it's that we've gotten unlucky. And "streaks" of bad luck don't exist-- every time we hunt we get our results independently from the last time. So there's no reason to believe that hunting now won't work.

Let me put it this way. Do you think there's a lower than 1/8ths chance of the humans being unfriendly or hostile or of us failing to steal food? Then vote for skipping hunting in good conscience. If not, then there's no reason not to at least vote for it in conjunction with checking out the fire.
>>
>>4715934
logically you have a point, but the dice are a cruel and fickle thing, and I don't trust our luck enough to risk purely hunting, I will agree we can look for stuff along the way, but just purely hunting, no
>>
>>4715938
And I don't trust the QM enough to believe he's just gonna hand us friendly humans, so there you have it. I suspect it's gonna be a "humans are cooking food, do you steal it" type thing, and then we're just going to roll dice for something else. But let's compromise and say that we're going hunting on the way to the fire, huh?
>>
>>4715943
I have no issue with that, I in fact think it's a decent compromise, let's hope others agree

pride is good, but allowing that pride blind us from our own limitations only invites ruin. ferocity is good is gives us strength, but allowing it to limit our pool of options is bad. I say we roll with how the story develops and atm, we are a weak, starving dragon on the way to a campfire, near the onset of winter, if we end up voting to a house cat and can then so be it if we vote to sneak some food and beat it so be it, but we need to be willing to adapt

You sneak closer to the fire and huddle in the shadows to remain unseen. The closer you get, the more smoke you smell... and the more gibberish you hear. The noise is foolish and annoying to your ears. Endless "buh" and "guh" noises, no proper clacking or hissing sounds. This is more proof that Dragons are superior but your curiosity grows and so you continue to sneak closer. Then you see them. Three giant, scaleless freaks of nature, babbling to themselves and jeering as they poke and prod something small, tied down between them and their tiny, beautiful fire. You squint and your instincts inform you exactly of what you're looking at. A kobold, bound by the hands and feet. Diminutive, scaled, and absolutely pathetic, but understanding its place.

Your instincts tell you that because every kobold is serving or seeking to serve a Dragon, they are preferred among lesser races. They also tell you that if these abominations have managed to catch one, there probably isn't a Dragon ruling it, otherwise there wouldn't be a single kobold, there would be a few dozen and only three wouldn't have had the chance to capture them. Unless this is only one that was taken by surprise... The kobold hasn't seen you yet and the freaks aren't paying any attention. Your cunning mind figures that if these three were capturing a kobold, they probably wouldn't have a good reaction a Dragon. Especially a hatchling they could crack over the head and throw in their campfire.

It also figures that if you attempted to free this kobold, while it might try to do everything in its power to help you, if it brought you back to other kobolds it might draw attention if they got excited. It might also get you eaten if the kobolds already had a Dragon, though that's unlikely. It would also be a very, very, very bad idea to try when you don't even have scales, or claws, or fiery breath. In fact, the wisest thing to do right now would be to leave, get something, ANYTHING to eat and try to grow as fast as you can so you don't have to rely on being lucky and sneaky to avoid being caught and eaten. Although, if you wanted to, you could always try to stick around and see if these vile beasts leave any of their smelly burnt food behind.

You leave, not risking the possible dangers and benefits of staying. You're starving and hunger for vengeance but not as much as you hunger to fill your stomach. Letting the small furry creatures mock you with their tree-climbing and hole-hiding is dangerous, it's much safer to harvest the tiny skittering creatures and plan your revenge. At least until you've recovered. You don't think you could think in another two or three days with no food. Two or three more days after that, and you would be dead.

It doesn't matter, we know which option is winning and we may as well make QM's job easy for him when he comes back to write the next update, he can skip the roll phase easily thanks to this insane autist.

Faggot, stop
>>
I've got to take care of a lot of uni business so the next update will most likely be happening tomorrow. Thank you for reading the quest so far!

>>4717148
You're about large enough to fit in the palm of an average man's hand, not counting your tail, which would go a little down the wrist. Small for a Dragon hatchling but the thing about Dragons is, they have a tendency to not stay hatchlings.

i feel bad for the qm, the autism in this thread is off the charts. don't call votes and rolls for the qm guys, it just adds in pointless confusion.

It's a sign of a great quest, if people care enough to argue then you're doing it right. Look at Created, that was autism central and it was amazingly great quest.

I wonder if hVgoP+sm hails from Akun.

i dont mind the arguments, its much better than just wordless picking options and not talking, i just wish you guys weren't so weird about it. created was more shitposty than autistic, it lent the quest a fun and creative atmosphere. this thread is just full of weirdos.

You're either going to eat proper meat or you're going to starve. Your pride will accept nothing less. You find the small, furry creatures are infuriatingly fast and prone to leaping on the trees before you can catch them. You wonder if there might not be another, more effective way to hunt them than searching the forest until you see one on the ground and then chasing it. Then you remember how full you were after doing that before they humiliated you again and you try again.

We'll need weapons, armour and strength to make it through the winter. Get a start now, so that we can either burrow out a proper lair, or after other prey. Once we have some armour, and fire to roast off the needles, maybe we can go after those fat, waddling creatures that bristle? Porcupines are easy enough prey if you can avoid being pricked and can burn off the quills.

Theres no indication that winter is approaching so soon. We could invest in Sensew to make hunting easier, Fortitude because that seems like the skill you need to survive winter, and scales/breath for additional winter protection. In fact I'm just gonna change my vote up.

We dont need those right now.

>>4718311
They dont seem to be providing any posative or negative benefits to hunting right now, as opposed to investing in sense which would make our odds of critting higher. +2 senses give each roll a 50% chance to roll 6 or higher, which means we'll be able to evolve faster before winter approaches.
>>
>>4718307
And do recall that none of those three acttirubtes (with maybe scales as the exception) will make surviving winter any easier.

>>4718203
>Scales: You don't even have scales. (-1)
>Claws: You don't even have claws. (-1)

>>
>>4718399
They might not give negatives for not having them, but bonuses for having them. I can see claws and wings assisting in hunting, and scales helping for the winter ahead.
>>
>>4718416
Yes but at this moment we wont recieve any bonuses from having they at 0 instead of -1. A smarter choice would be to invest in Senses, then either of those so at the very least we have +2 sense, and then maybe benifit from claws or wings when we invest in them a second time so each are at +1.

Action economy
>>
>>4718427
That's a valid point, assuming there's no diminishing returns on senses (dubious). I'll switch to

Agility let's us better hunt the squirrels, though the modifier isn't super important because of the frequency of crits.

You've got it backwards anon, the squirrels are easy to find but hard to catch, the shrews are hard to find but easy to catch. This post >>4718152 lists the +1 as "Smooth," which is the descriptor for our agility.
