An illustrated civilization quest.
Neolithic to bronze age technology.
Some magic/fantasy elements.
Updates once every 1-2 days.

You are Burnaburiash, shaman and leader of the village. Your people have been fled to the northern desert from the terrible army the Djenak Balai. Your population is small now but in time more survivors should reach these lands.

Last thread you left one of your villagers, Arwia to supervise the reconstruction of some burned down homes while you go off to attend to important shaman business. Hunting down an evil spirit that has been stalking you.
You have cornered the evil spirit at a pool at the end of a dark cave. He styles himself "The Bellicist" and has offered you the gift of dark magic asking nothing in return. Vehemently you deny his offer...

Burnaburiash: "I think not Bellicist. I won't have anything to do with you."
The Bellicist: "You disappoint me Burnaburiash. The indomitable will to victory is the splendor of humanity. You deny your very birthright."
Burnaburiash: "Your words are hollow, shade! Enough of your lies!"
The creature stands up to full height. With a resentful glare. Are you strong enough to destroy him?

You hesitate. What if fighting is playing into his hands? What if he crosses to the physical and kills someone?
Burnaburiash: "I-I.. dem-"
The evil spirit flicks your head with its gangly finger, knocking you on your spiritual rump.
The Bellicist: "Your mind is divided. You'll not destroy me in this state. I will leave your village as you wish. For I predict you will crawl back to me for my magic and my knowledge soon enough."
The shade twists his body around and starts crawling away, phasing through the cave's physical walls.

The evil spirit is gone, and hopefully he won't be showing up in the village again. Though you worry you missed an opportunity to destroy him. You step back into your body and clear your mind.
When you awaken in the real world you tell your men the evil spirit is gone and prepare to travel back home.

You arrive safely, the men happily throw down their shields and spears to go meet with the others. Meanwhile you go find Arwia for a report.
Arwia: "Welcome home Chief Burnaburiash! Have the bad spirits been taken care of?"
Burnaburiash: "We won't be seeing that one again. Is the reconstruction going well?"
Arwia: "The bricks are laying quickly! With my brother and the other men back to help they'll be finished in no time."
Shala: "The wheat is almost mature too. Should be ready to harvest by winter."
What's your current priority?

You get some of the men together and tell them to organize some security measures.
Burnaburiash: "I don't want any raiders catching us by surprise again."
Ishum: "So you just want a guard or two keeping watch at night, and a couple of torches?"
Burnaburiash: "That's the idea. Guards, a defence plan, and some weapons close by in case of a sneak attack. I'll let you men work out the details yourself."
Nabu-Mu: "Should we make more weapons?"
Burnaburiash: "Whatever you think is necessary. If you're not working on security or hunting, go help Arwia build the huts."

You leave the men to organize their defence plans and night watch. But just as you leave, Enki approaches you.
Enki: "Burnaburiash, there's something that needs you attention."
Burnaburiash: "What is it Enki? A message from Namtar?"
Enki: "Yes! I journeyed out to meet with one of Namtar's men and he brings bad news: The Djenak Balai have stationed some men to block the passage to the desert. Migrants won't be able to get through while the path is blocked."
Burnaburiash: "What!? Even here they plague us!"
Enki: "It is as we feared."
You stare forlorn into the distance, how will you meet this new threat?

Zakiti and Labashi volunteer for the mission and the party proceed on their way. While they go the village continues organizing its security and rebuilding work.

The scouts eventually find the Djenak Balai's desert camp.

While a direct attack would be foolish, you could try more "subtle" means.
Poisoning their water will be upsetting to the spirit of the pool, but he will probably be forgiving if it means ridding him of his new neighbors.

You spend some time planning the mission and straining poison from a Pubu Fruit. Using it to fill up the water-skins the leather workers have been producing.
Burnaburiash: "Will this poison make them unable to fight?"
Nabu-mu: "It's not a killing kind of poison, it's a stomach-aching, Diarrhoea giving, snakes-wriggling-in-your-bowels kind of poison. They will be able to fight but won't be fighting well."
Burnaburiash: "No less than they deserve. All we need now is someone to carry out the mission."
When you ask, all of the men in the village volunteer for the task.
You believe Labashi has the best chance of success, but you feel a little apprehensive about sending him. Losing a friend like that would be all too horrible.
You could send one of the men you don't know very well, but you feel like that may be a selfish decision.

The witch raises her arms in the air and a puff of flames flares up next to your ankle. The hem of your robe catches fire!
Surprising! She has spirit magic as well. Grinning excitedly, she prepares to cast again.
Not this time. You ready your own spell. It isn't easy remaining focused whilst your clothes are on fire, but your well disciplined mind maintains concentration and you sling out your spell much faster than Hani'ata's amateurish hocus pocus.
You conjure a massive wave that absolutely dunks her, washing her into the river. The considerable splashback douses your robe.
The embarrassed girl crawls out of the river to face the chuckling villagers.
Burnaburiash: "Now you are you ready to behave?"

(First off I wasn't really thinking about the distance to the Djenak Balai camp until now, it's ~51.21km away from you. Don't worry about how your entire village including children and elderly managed to walk there so fast. Apologies, I'll try to pay more attention to this stuff in the future.)
You gather up the ENTIRE village. There are some complaints, but everyone in the village take's the Djenak and his army very seriously so there isn't too much resistance.
You give everyone a weapon, and move out. After a long moonlit march through the desert you reach the outskirts of their base...

I changed up the rules a bit since last time. So here's a quick rundown:

Units can't move diagonal anymore. Most adult units move 3 tiles. Your uhh... child soldiers will move 2 tiles.
You can move through friendly units but not through enemy units.
By default:
Men have 3 HP
Women have 2 HP
Children have 1 HP

97 KB
97 KB GIF
=MELEE WEAPONS=
Basic melee Weapons do 2 damage.
Melee weapons made of bronze do 3 damage.
All melee weapons except the spear can only attack the 4 tiles adjacent.
You can only attack up or down 1 tile, any higher or lower than that can't be reached.

Spear
-can attack diagonally

Warclub
-pushes* the target 1 tile

Staff
-reduces incoming damage by 1 from enemies within 1 tile.

Sword
-sidearm**

*if one object is pushed into another, both take 1 dmg
**you can equip a sidearm in addition to your normal weapon, you can swap to the equipped sidearm at any time.

You can always do unarmed attacks regardless of what you have equipped.

Fist
-does 1 dmg

Push

258 KB
258 KB GIF
=RANGED WEAPONS=
Basic ranged weapons do 1 damage
Ranged weapons that shoot bronze arrows / lead bullets do 2 damage
Can attack at range!!!
When aiming at enemies at higher levels of elevation, your range is subtracted by 1 for each tile of height your target has over you.

Sling
-9 tile range
-can only target horizontally
-pushes the target 1 tile

Bow
-6 tile range
-can target horizontally, anywhere within 6 tile range
>>
File: 1589448569383.gif (168 KB, 1057x649)
168 KB
168 KB GIF
=SHIELDS AND ARMOUR=
Armour increases your hp
Leather and Chitin armour: +1 hp
Bronze Armour: +2 hp

Shields reduce incoming damage from the direction you're facing, they can be paired with 1-handed weapons (swords, spears, slings)
Leather/Wooden/Wicker shields: -1 dmg
Bronze Shields: -2 dmg
>>
=GRAVITY=
Being pushed off an edge makes the target take 1 damage per tile it falls.
If one object falls on top of another, the latter is annihilated, regardless of its mass or HP.
Objects that fall into water take no damage and reappear on the water's edge next turn.

Stuff I will probably add later (feel free to make suggestions!)
-throwing spears
-clubs (stone age level sword)
-dagger (more damage from behind)
-throwing dagger (ranged sidearm)
-light cavalry (camels and horses)

Yes they only have 1 range. Spearchads btfo

You artistically create a totem to repel evil spirits. You can deploy it during the fight instead of attacking/casting. Evil spirits will not move into the totem's area of effect, and will actively try to leave it if they're caught in it.

The time has come! You march your tribe into the battlefield. It looks like your poison has already damaged several of their warriors. Additionally you seem to outnumber them 27 to 9! Morale is very high! (amongst the adults anyway). You see their leader, a Balai sorcerer glowering from a hill top. Who knows what foul magic he has at his command?. You look at the sky and take a deep breath.

The Djenak can hand out a wide arsenal of spells to his sorcerers as easily as Bilya and the Bellecist offered spells to you. There's no telling which spells a balai sorcerer might have.

I noticed some of the females and children have spears, these units are just taking up space since I refuse to put them in any real danger. I guess there were not enough slings and bows to go around.

That first guy gets killed by a spear man then the archers deal with the spawning spirit, its an over kill but we should be able to see what the spirits look like.

Hey thanks heaps for your dedicated responses! Since playing out combat with this skirmish mini-game isn't getting a lot of traction and takes many updates to finish I will swap to a simpler way to resolve combat in the future for better player engagement. But I will finish this one, it's not quite as bad as some infamous fights in quests that last for months.

(Burnaburiash can only cast a wave directly in front of herself.)

Nabu-mu strikes down one of the Balai warriors with his spear. No sooner than the fanatic dies, a shade crawls out of his corpse. A twisted hunched over thing, with a long head and gangly clawed arms. It is said Balai warriors are given lashings and burning hot brandings just to twist them inside, all to produce these wretched spirits. A volley of arrows arc over the hill killing the creature. But more Balai warriors are charging into the fold. And their sorcerer is coming down from his perch to join the fight.
The enemy is close enough for you to charge out and attack!

ABC: Fireing arc, first two shots kill the two warriors, the next shot hits the spirits

D: come from old man with bow, he hits one of the soldiers for 1 damage

EF: The children then finish him off and again blast his spirit into the guy in the back.

G: comes from the two archers who finish off the front most spirit.

H: the two guys run around the balls (I didnt realize they were floating in the last update, i thought they were a 2x2 attack my bad.)

i: shaman runs up and places the totem on the high ground

Your archers start raining hell on the charging Balai. For each enemy you slay a shade emerges and continues the charge. You lift the evil spirit high into the air and drive it into the ground. You sense it's working! The shades start deviating from the charge and start moving to the flanks instead. But two of your own men are going down the flank as well, they may not be able to escape in time.
The sorcerer uses his dark magic to embue one of the shades with crackling red energy. The creature appears strengthened! Most of the remaining human enemies continue their mad charge into your waiting archers.

>Flankers, retreat.
They can't, the spirits move 4 tiles per tern to their 3 per turn. Archers can't reach either.

My plan:
step 1: move some people into position. IF the spirit totem is a BLOCKER then have the guy in blue circle destroy it.

Step 2: use WAVE on our OWN MEN to give that 1 slinger the movement she needs to get into position.

step 3: final reposition

step 4: attack phase:
Have the archers kill the spear men so all 3 spirits pop out
The spear men, doing 2 damage each, kill the first two spirits and the line up of slingers (STARTING AT THE BACK MOST SLINGER) do 4 damage killing all the enemies in front of us

Use the 1 re positioned singer to do 1 damage to enraged spirit. Then have the two flankers finish off the spirits.

that leaves us with just the sorc and 1 spear man.

I did my very best to rescue those men with the wave tactic, hopefully they can survive and run next turn. We can use wave again on the children to reposition them and cover the retreat.

Not for anything!

Your forces sweep in and take out the last Balai warrior. He and his shade are defeated before it can do any further harm. Despite your intentions to kill the sorcerer first, he has escaped as the sole survivor. He flees towards the grassland beyond the desert.
Burnaburiash: "Leave the coward. We must tend to the injured."
You quickly attend to the one warrior who was struck down in battle. You smear generous amounts of healing Bitee Paste to his wounds in a fleeting attempt to preserve his life.

After resting in the Balai camp and feasting on their food supplies. You order the men to pick up all the remaining supplies and head back home. You return home to find your huts ransacked. The doors flung open, the pots and baskets overturned or broken. All of your food has been taken as well as some of your textiles. You find Hani'ata hiding in the Smoker.
Burnaburiash: "Hani'ata!! What calamity struck here!?"
Hani'ata: "It was not my fault! A bunch of raiders came soon after you all left! They plundered everything in sight."
Ishum: "I say: She is a raider spy and TOLD them our base was undefended."
Hani'ata: "Stupid! I saved your bag of Gemeti coins." She tosses you the bag of money the Uppulu had gifted you during your little fever crisis.
Hani'ata: "You should all be kissing my footprints! I saved your money and I saved your crops from those mangy Emus!"
Burnaburiash: "It's okay Hani'ata, I'm not going to punish you. And thank you for hiding what you could. We brought some food from our victory and we can start restocking our reserves tomorrow."
The rest of sunup is spent fixing up the mess, after sunset you finally get to lie down on your soft bedroll and think about your plans for tomorrow.

Burna bury ash. You have a funeral pyre made for your fallen warrior. As is tradition for your people. Sitting around the flames, conducting this small ceremony reminds you of home. Back in the city of Tripoda there were many wise men learned in the ways of flame and metalurgy. Memories of towering furnaces and treasures of Electrum and Bronze surface in your mind. You spent most of your time in the outlying villages but still have fond memories of the city. The other villagers seem to be likewise inspired. Maybe after the food situation ends you could start laying the foundation of metalworking.

You gather a small recon team and begin tracking down the thieves that stole your supplies. Suspecting a spy has been observing your village, you explore the nearby area for signs of a spy but find nothing. Eventually Enki picks up a trail and you begin to track it to its source. A column of smoke in the distance reveals the site of a battle, a lair in the side of a rocky cliff face and a handful of dead raiders. A group of Ishtar camel raiders are carrying supplies out of the lair an into their camels' travel bags. No doubt the supplies that were stolen from you are among the plunder. Your old associate Prince Jamael is with them, although it seems like an older grayer man at his side is the leader of this raiding party.

Nebo: "That's our food!"
Enki: "I don't think they will let us have it, not after they fought for it."

(Drawing all these stupid camels took up all my time!)

You decide to approach the Ishtar, it would be foolish to turn away after coming so far.
Burnaburiash: "Hello! Prince Jamael."
Jamael: "Oh, Burnaburiash. Sun's Blessing."
The prince makes a hand gesture, that you take as an expression of politeness.
The grey beard trots his camel between you. His fine woven clothes and beads of precious metal show his high standing. He rudely points his spear at you.
Ashur: "State your intentions. Woman of the woods."
Burnaburiash: "These raiders stole all our food. We tracked them here to take vengeance, and reclaim our supplies."
Ashur: "We are the Ishtar: the desert storm! WE slew the bandits and shall take what we wish."
Jamael: "Father, when I was alone and injured Burnaburiash healed me and gave-"
Ashur: "And THEN what happened Jamael? This witch allowed the Gemeti to destroy you! You, my own son returned home shamefully afoot!"
Enki: "Wouldn't have returned home at all-"
Ashur: "Silence runt!
He rides back towards his men.
Ashur: "Ishtar! Take everything your camels can carry. Burn the rest."
The old man rides off, with his men scrambling to finish their work and follow him.

It seems your relations with the Ishtar are tenous. You imagine they could become an enemy if you became a lucrative target for raids. Fortunately the young prince is much more agreeable. Before he leaves, maybe you could get a quick word with him while his father is gone.

Burnaburiash: "I am glad to see you made a successful escape, prince Jamael. Is your father normally so confrontational?"
Jamael: "You found him in a good mood Burnaburiash. It is not easy to earn father's respect, and he hates weaklings."
Nebo steps forward beside you.
Nebo: "You call us weaklings?"
Jamael: "I do not. Indeed, I heard just a few days ago you defeated mysterious warriors from the south: clad in bones, with skin covered in ash."
Enki: "How do you know this? I saw no witness to the battle."
Jamael: "Rumours that spring from raiders who visit our city. They say the bandit lord named Razzaq sees everything in the desert."
Burnaburiash: "Sees *everything*? Pah, empty baskets. But the rumour is true: we did battle the Djenak Balai. And the raiders knew we weren't guarding our camp."
The last of the Ishtar riders leaps to his camel and takes off.
Jamael: "I must go now, may we meet again Shaman."
He reins his camel around and gallops into the distance, a cloud of dust behind him.
You use your magic to douse the burning camp, but everything of value has been taken or destroyed. Disappointed, you return home empty handed.

You return to find little progress has been made. The Wood Burner you ordered hasn't even been started. One of the burnt hut husks from 2 raids ago still hasn't been cleaned up.
Arwia: "I'm sorry Burni, with half the men hunting to restock our food and the other half with you, our clay pit has been left asleep. And that Hani'ata girl won't lift a finger without supervision!"
Burnaburiash: "Don't worry, things are difficult right now but your management is a big help to me."
You inspect the storage house and find your food levels are at least stable, villages should start producing things as normal soon. Your inventory check is interrupted when a villager approaches you with a message.
Villager: "Chief, there's a group of our people heading towards the village. About 20 of them in total. They should arrive by the start of winter."
Burnaburiash: "20 at once? I suppose more and more of our people are getting organized and escaping the Djenak's grasp."
Arwia: "Before they arrive, we'll need more houses, and more food stockpiled."
Burnaburiash: "We'll handle it, just like the last wave of migrants."

The hunters explore surrounding territories to find better hunting grounds and larger game. They discover a nice area an acceptable distance away.
Two of the animals; the Camels and Elephant have excellent amounts of meat. With these grounds the hunters will bring in significantly more meat although they will be spending more time away from the village for these long hunting trips.

1: For hunting stick to Wild Dogs since there is only 2 hunters. No point in killing an elephant when you cant even eat it.

My issue with killing camels is they may be sacred to the desert riders and we would be in their "territory"

2: See if you can have Bibi teach the children something, like how to weave baskets or make slings. She is an old women surely she has some knowledge of things.

If Hani'ata doesn't want to work and thinks herself a powerful wizard person, task her with making contact with the earth spirit. The earth spirit is slow and hard to reach, it may teach her patience.

3: Try to make spiritual contact with it it and give it offerings. see how docile it is before letting it run loose, boars can be crazy and wild.

The hunters return with some mildly disappointing catches. Wild dogs, not really any better than the emus and lizards they've been bringing in.
Nebo: "It's just not worth going all that way for small game. We should take down one of those ELEPHANTS. One of those should feed the newcomers easy!"
Burnaburiash: "Ha, I don't want you hunting such powerful animals in a team of two, brave nephew."
Nebo: "I could defeat an elephant alone!"
Burnaburiash: "Can you carry it all the way home alone?"
Nebo: "Uh..."

Bibi is happy to direct the children as they pitch in. She's primarily a bowyer, and your vague instruction to "weave baskets or make slings" turns into more bows and slings and the kids fletching a large stockpile of ammunition.
As for Hani...
Hani'ata: "How am I supposed to find the mountain spirit? Crossing over to the spirit world is hard, normally I can only do it when there's an eclipse or when a tornado hits."
Burnaburiash: "I didn't say it would be easy. But if it's too hard for you we could always use another pair of hands working the clay pit. But you have to do *something*. I don't want to send you away."
Hani'ata: "Fine then. I'll find your mountain spirit."
Burnaburiash: "If you would like instruction, I am happy to teach you."
Hani'ata: "Bah bah bah, I'll succeed on my own."
>>
The Pig does have some sort of spiritual presence, but not on the same level as a human with spellcasting ability. You aren't able to cross over into the spirit world at this time.
You keep a close eye on the creature, you're not exactly familiar with giant warthogs but you know wild boars can be very dangerous. After a while you conclude that it's peaceful enough. The villagers, particularly the children seem to really like The Pig so you decide to treat it nicely and give it some offerings of food, finding it eats anything organic you offer to it. The Pig gets settled in and the next morning he is still lounging in the exact same spot.
