After the Nine Great Clans united the long-divided lands of Kiyoshu 30 years ago, the empire has entered a golden age of peace and prosperity. However, the will of the samurai lives on! Swordsmen and warriors all around the country still strive for strength and mastery, to compete and reach the very peak of martial skill!

You are Hiroshi Nobuyasu of the Hiroshi Clan, a vassal clan of the Toumi, one of the Nine Great Clans. From a young age, you have been exposed to the way of the sword, trained in the arts of the Toumi School of Swordsmanship. But as fate would have it… You aren’t particularly good at the discipline. In fact, despite your hard work and determination, it would be apt to say that you are rather inept. At best, you are average, no better than some nameless foot soldier. Yet, you are far from discouraged. As one who shows deep passion and appreciation for the blade, your perseverance holds you firm. Never faltering in the face of adversity. Never abandoning the sworn tenets of the samurai.

As I recall we are in Moriyama, Nakatomi province and we moved from Minashi in the Toumi Province.
>>
>>4719836

Indeed we are! Post coming up in a few moments after I find some pictures to go along with them.
>>
Previously, you were oredered by your father to set out on a warrior’s pilgrimage only to be kidnapped by the Takekage bandits. With assistance from Iga, another prisoner, you managed to escape and also free the captive villagers of Kiga village. In the process, Iga received a fatal injury and was brought to the brink of death, only to be saved by you when you brought him back to Kiga village. To repay this life saving debt, he has pledged to serve under you as his lord. Afterwards, you made your way to Moriyama, to train with the Nakatomi school in preparation for the Moriyama Spring Tournament.
>>
Without a word, Tadatoshi walks off to the side of the hall where he’s keeping his bow and arrows. Looking around, you spot Asahiko sitting alone by the side of the hall. It’s a strange sight to see Asahiko by himself, so you decide to approach him.

“Yo, mind if I sit here?”

“Sure, what’s up?”

“Nothing. Just thought it was a little strange to see you by yourself.”

“Ah, don’t worry about it. I think I had a breakthrough in a match just now, so I’m just meditating on it.”

“I see.” Maybe you should leave him alone since he’s busy, but before you do anything, Asahiko continues the conversation.

“How’s your training?”

“Pretty good, so far. I’ve been able to make some progress.”

“Mind if you show me what you’re practicing?”

You see no reason to object. “Sure.”

Both of you pick up your practice swords and move to the center of the hall, earning a few curious looks from some of the disciples present. “Try and counter my attack” You tell Asahiko who nods. He stares at you with eagerness in his eyes. It looks like he’s also using this as an opportunity to solidify his most recently gleamed insights.

A few moments later, you rush forward with as much speed as you can muster and, just as you’ve practiced, execute Returning Wind. Your right leg plants itself just in front of Asahiko and bends slightly. You raise your left leg just enough so that your eye level is at his stomach, and make a fully horizontal slash. A loud wood on wood sound is heard when your katana wedges between both of his blades.

Asahiko grins suspiciously, causing you to propel yourself back with more force than usual. In the midst of your retreat, you see him pivot himself around where your blades met and slash at where you were standing from the side, only to be confused when his blade didn’t meet anything.

“That’s one annoying move you’re practicing.” Asahiko voices with slight irritation.

“And that’s one dangerous move you’ve just pulled off.”

“Heh, but I didn’t manage to hit you. A strike that doesn’t land isn’t dangerous at all.”

He returns to where he was sitting just now and folds his arm sitting with his eyes closed. You decide not to disturb him. Instead, you direct your attention just to the other side of the hall. Farthest away from all the other disciples, Tadatoshi is wiping his bow with a cloth. As usual, no one wants to talk to him, not that he looks like he wants it. Still, you can’t but feel a little bad. His family probably didn’t take very well the fact that he prefers the bow to the blade.
>>
>>4719855

You find yourself walking towards him without noticing it.

“What’re you up to?”

Tadatoshi shoots you a slightly confused look, like he’s not expecting you to be there, then returns to his normal listless expression.

“Maintenance. What do you want?”

“Nothing. Can I sit down?”

“Doesn’t matter to me.” His voice is flat and indifferent.

You sit down beside him and lean against the wall. “Can I ask who taught you the bow?”

“My master.”

“What’s his name?”

“Don’t know. She never told me before she left.”

“Where’d she go?”

“Don’t know either.”

The conversation halts awkwardly. You don’t know what else to say, and it doesn’t look like Tadatoshi is keen to talk. However, he seems to have stopped cleaning his bow, just looking at it longingly.

“One day I’ll find her, though.”

The words were spoken briefly, but beneath them you feel an indescribably deep resolve, the most emotion you’ve seen Tadatoshi express at this point.

“If you’d like, after I leave, I can ask people along the way if they’ve seen your master.”

“That won’t be necessary. The one to find her will be me.”

“Alright then.”

That’s when Master Yasashiku returns. “Good news everyone. A few days ago, I helped those who are interested submit their application for the Moriyama Spring Tournament. I’m happy to announce that all the applications have been accepted!”

Loud cheering fills the dojos, and you can’t help but also feel excited.

Two weeks pass. Your proficiency with Returning Wind has improved significantly. There are still things like speed you need to improve on, but you can now perform it consistently. With your daily sparring against Tadatoshi and the other disciples as of late, your battle sense has also been honed greatly. Now, you can at least keep the battle from being so one-sided. Moreover, your blade swings with greater speed and higher precision, a result of Master Yasashiku’s constant advice. His instruction has been a huge boon, but it can’t last forever. The Moriyama Spring Tournament is just three days away. Your time with the Nakatomi is near its end.

Occasionally, Iga comes by to check on you and dump whatever information he’s collected. Most recently, a few groups have entered the city, the most notable of which being the students of the Senmori school and a few monks of Mekura-Ji temple.
>>
>>4719855

Soon, the day of the tournament arrives. A grand excitement pervades the entire city as people crowd around a large expanse that is to be the site of the tournament. Wooden benches for spectators are set up by the side, with special seats specially set up for the tournament overseers and important figures coming to watch.

Despite the fact that Moriyama is one of the major cities in Kiyoshu, the tournament site isn’t as grand as in other cities. There is no huge arena able to house thousands of spectators. Instead, it is more akin to the smaller tournaments you frequently fought in, with just an empty space and ropes marking out the combat area. However, being surrounded all around by tall trees and bamboo more than makes up for it.

You along with the participating disciples of the Nakatomi school, led by Master Yasashiku, make your way through the crowds to what would be the back of the “arena” where all the other participants are currently waiting. This year, there are about 60 people who’ve managed to get their applications accepted. Usually, warriors would have to be of certain status, or prove their skills to have their applications accepted, but you and the other disciples were able to pass this with Master Yasashiku’s referral.

Many of the warriors present look formidable. Some are young, others a bit older, but without a doubt, you cannot afford to underestimate a single one of them.

“Nervous?” Asahiko asks you.

“A bit, but I’m used to it. This isn’t my first major tournament after all.”

“Let’s fight again in the arena. I wanna see how much you’ve improved.”

“Likewise.”

Your conversation carries on for a bit until another voice catches your attention.

“Can’t believe you showed up! Quit using that stupid little bow of yours yet?” one of them says. The man is just slightly taller than you and Tadatoshi, dressed in formal green clothing.

“Hey, stop it. What if he runs away again?” another one continues before both burst into laughter. He’s dressed much in the same way as Tadatoshi and the other man but is the tallest of the three.

Both bear a resemblance to Tadatoshi, whose expression looks even darker than when Master Yasashiku forced him to start sparring with you.

You stare at the two men standing imposingly in front of Tadatoshi with indignation rising deep within you. As you take a few steps toward their direction, Asahiko stops you by placing a hand on your shoulder.

“Hold on a minute, I know how you feel, but those are the Daimyo’s sons. Best not to offend them.”

“You may be right, but how can we forsake our values in the face of such disgrace?”

You ignore Asahiko’s words, to his dismay, and walk to Tadatoshi’s side.

“Such blatant disrespect has no place in this tournament.” You say coldly.

“And who might you be?” The shorter of the two men asks with his chin tilted upwards as if he’s looking down on you.

“Hiroshi Nobuyasu.”

“Never heard of you. Audience members aren’t allowed here, the exit’s that way.”

“Hold on Hadetoshi, this is the guy that’s been leeching off the dojo recently.” The taller of the two states.

“Is he?”

“Yeah, I heard he couldn’t even best Tadatoshi.”

Both erupt in more laughter.

“Then he mustn’t be very good then!” Hadetoshi responds. “Tell you what, kid. Just leave the tournament. You’re not gonna make it very far if you can’t even beat that trash excuse of a swordsman there.”

Trash excuse of a swordsman. Now that’s a line you haven’t heard in a long time. It was Ieyasu’s favourite label for you. You’ve long since grown numb to the pain of being called such a thing, but you can never forget the derisive looks of your clan members when they look at you being insulted by your younger brother.

“I don’t believe I know what you’re talking about. On the basis of character alone, the man beside me is a far greater swordsman than you could ever be. Hell, his skills aren’t even something to joke about. If you have the gall to insult him here, make sure you can walk the talk in the arena.”

“What was that?” The shorter one asks, lowering his tilted chin. As his eyes meet yours, he pauses in silence for a moment. Your gaze is locked straight onto his, eyes burning with a deep burning determination, shining with silent fury.

“Tch. Doesn’t matter. I, Nakatomi Hadetoshi, will beat the both of you. That is, if you even manage to get to me.”

Hadetoshi walks away first, clearly in a bad mood. His older brother only eyes you down before joining him. “Nakatomi Yorutoshi. Remember the name.”

When the both of them are out of sight, Asahiko moves to rejoin you.

“You two alright?”

“Yeah.” You answer.

“Why did you do that?” Tadatoshi asks.

“Why wouldn’t I do that?”

“Nevermind.” Like his brothers, Tadatoshi walks away, but in the opposite direction. Just as he’s walked a bit away, he stops and utters a single word. “Thanks.”

You and Asahiko look at each other as if you’ve both seen a ghost. Did he just thank someone?
>>
>>4721243

About an hour later, some of the tournament staff go to each participant to write down their requests for the demonstration ceremony and hand them a piece of paper. For you, you just needed a simple bamboo pole or rolled up tatami mat. On the piece of paper handed out, a 14 is written beside your name, indicating that you’d be the 14th person to perform while at the back is the match list. Your first match is against a swordsman you’ve never heard about before, Yuji Kenma. What catches your attention though, is that your second match is with Asahiko should the both of you win your first matches.

Scanning through the list, you find Tadatoshi’s name. Looks like he was also facing some swordsman you didn’t know. However, should he win all his matches, it looks like he’d have to face his older brother, Nakatomi Yorutoshi. Looking more closely, you’d also have to face Nakatomi Hadetoshi, the middle child, if you beat Asahiko. Both of these scenarios are of course if both brothers win all their matches, but according to Iga’s information, that seems likely.

Another hour later, the demonstration ceremony promptly begins and participants are seated beside the arena away from the audience and nobility. The first person called up appears to be from the Senmori school, given that he’s wielding two katanas. The announcer calls out his name which you don’t manage to catch.
He looks pretty young, maybe just a few years younger than you. In front of him are three rolled up tatami mats positioned in an arc.

He unsheathes both katanas at his waist from their brown scabbards and moves, closing the few metres between him and the tatami mats in a matter of milliseconds. Both his arms and swords are crossed, but quickly open up and spread in both directions, like a bird opening up his wings. The center target is cleaved into three parts, while the other two are cut in twain. His current form is now open, leaving him quite vulnerable if this was a fight. But to your surprise, he quickly addresses this by turning his body clockwise while moving his left katana back in front of him, effectively returning him to a defensive stance.

This masterful display rouses the audience into cheering and applause, a strong start to the ceremony. Yet, the nobles sitting at a segregated area don’t seem too excited, with only a few clapping unenthusiastically. Only Master Yasashiku seems to be rather impressed.
>>
>>4721244

In contrast to the first participant, the rest fail to leave as strong of an impression on the audience, opting to go for simple displays of skill. Of course, to the untrained eye, they wouldn’t be able to pick out the subtle differences in technique among the participants. Each of them had strong fundamentals, from what you can tell.

As the 13th participant is entering the arena, another one of the tournament staff, a man, informs you to prepare. The 13th participant swiftly dispatches two tatami mats with a single, broad, strike, then quickly returns to his seat. Now it’s your turn to head up the arena. By the time you enter, the single target you requested is set up. With a setup like this, the audience is probably expecting a simple show like what they’ve seen so far.

You’ve already decided to demonstrate Returning Wind, but as for which variant, you’d decide now.

It’s only the demonstration ceremony, so you choose to keep it simple with the standard variant. A strong breeze picks up your long tied up hair. The wind feels good today, you think to yourself. All eyes are peeled on you as you unsheathe your katana swiftly.

You take a deep breath.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Your breath moves in tandem with the unrestrained wind, sending the refreshing spring air coursing through your entire being. For some reason, everything feels good, to the point that even if you fail, you’d be okay with it. A step backward then two forwards launches you into a full on sprint toward your target. Muscle memory does the rest of the work.

The motions of your two legs lowers your body.

Your hands are fully extended and parallel to the ground.

A satisfying swoosh sound echoes through the surrounding trees, accompanying your blade as it moves through the air from left to right.

Behind this singular swing of the sword are countless hours of trial and error. It is an embodiment of your time spent at the Nakatomi school, Master Yasashiku’s generous advice and your struggles against Tadatoshi and Asahiko, two seemingly insurmountable mountains. There is nothing but gratitude in your heart.

When the blade finishes it’s horizontal journey, you push yourself with great force.

Your body travels a few meters back and you land with a soft thud on your toes, blade still readied.

The top half of the rolled tatami drops onto the ground. Felled by a cut neither outstanding nor bad. A simple, clean, cut.

You succeeded.
>>
>>4722497

But the audience is silent. Perhaps to them it looked rather dull, not that it mattered to you. Off in the distance though, you spot Master Yasashiku standing from his seat, his hair also swaying in the wind. If you had Tadatoshi’s eyesight, you could maybe make out his expression. Then unexpectedly, he begins clapping. Not just him, another person from the general audience starts to clap, followed by another and another. Before long, the whole audience, and even a few of the nobles are applauding your performance.

Moved, you sheathe your blade and take a deep bow towards Master Yasashiku. Afterwards, you return to your seat.

Asahiko slaps you on the back when you get back. “Good job out there.”

“Thanks…” You say while scratching the back of your head, a bit embarrassed at the sudden praise.
>>
>>4722499

After you come the monks of Mekura-Ji temple, each carrying long polearms. Some have halberds, others spears and quarterstaves. Most striking of all is that all of them are wearing blindfolds. Still, they carry out their performances with little trouble. One has to wonder if those blindfolds are actually see-through and just for show. But if they aren’t, then they’d make truly formidable enemies.

More of the Senmori school disciples come up next. Few manage to match the first participant’s performance, but all of them are skilled in their own right. Though they use dual wielding, the rhythm of attack is completely different from that of the Nakatomi style. It’s slower and more deliberate, yet equally ferocious. You know this much from what Minato told you, but seeing it firsthand is much different from what you expected.

The final performances are taken by the Goto and Nakatomi clans, as expected from the two most powerful clans in the prefecture. The former only consists of Asahiko while the latter is represented by the three brothers.

Asahiko’s performance is electrifying to say the least, fully showcasing the speed and ferocity of the Nakatomi style. In contrast, Tadatoshi’s is slow and methodical, like an archer steadying his aim before firing a deadly arrow. However, the two older brothers are a completely different story. To put it bluntly, both are complete showoffs, incorporating impressive but impractical acrobatic movements into their attacks.
>>
>>4722503

Finally, it’s time for the matches. Incidentally, your match is the first. You grab a wooden katana from the side. Time to meet this Yuji Kenma guy… Which of all people turns out to be the young prodigy that was the first participant. According to proper dueling courtesy, you exchange names.

The fight is about to begin. You plan your strategy.

>Take advantage of the slower rhythm of the Senmori style and seize the initiative.

>Use distance to your advantage, attacking at the edge of your attack range and only getting close when an opportunity arises.

>Keep yourself on the move, constantly varying your attack range, periodically diving in close to then retreating.

Distance would be your comrade in this battle, something the Toumi style specialises in manipulating. The first to move is Kenma, maneuvering towards you in a slow and careful manner. Looks like he’s also wary about what tricks you’ll pull. When he’s just about three meters from you, his movements quickly accelerate and the two wooden katanas initially held close to his body are now a few centimeters from yours, both coming in parallel to each other at an absurd speed. His attack came earlier than you expected but you still have room to move your blade in the path of his swords. The crowd cheers as your katana blocks both his blades. Pushing against them, you force yourself backwards to create space.

He responds by lunging with the katana in his left hand, which you deflect. With some distance established, you can now carry out your plan in earnest. Every step Kenma takes forward, you take one backward, maintaining the distance between the two of you. At this range, neither one of you can launch strong attacks, but no doubt the more comfortable swordsman in this situation is you. As you move to avoid Kenma, your sword arm remains fully extended, making wide slashes intended to cut with the very top of your katana which keeps him at bay for a while.

After a few exchanges, Kenma’s movements begin to quicken but also become sloppier. “Come and fight me, coward!” He roars. Clearly, he’s getting quite frustrated with your strategy, but yet, no opening presents itself.

Eventually, he reaches some kind of breaking point. “Enough!” You hear him shout. Kenma stops pursuing you, instead opting to assume a rather familiar stance. His left katana is held horizontally while his right katana is held over his head pointing towards you. You’ve seen the Nakatomi disciples in this stance before, except with a wakizashi in their left hands. It’s to set up for a rhythmic series of slashes alternating between both hands. However, this feels much different than what you’ve faced before. Whether it’s your intuition or something else, you fall back further.

Kenma takes a large step with his right leg, slashing downwards with his right katana at where you were initially standing and raising his left. For a moment, his figure looked like it was flickering. There was some immense power being backed into his steps.
>>
>>4726456

His next step is packed with even more force, causing his whole body to dash forward and land just in front of you.

Fwoosh!

Kenma’s blade screams as it splits the air apart. A bold, mighty, attack. Too mighty in fact. Though subtle, you notice his balance being thrown off by the motion of his swing. His next step is going to be delayed. You can see it! A path of attack. Like discovering an open path in a dense jungle, a dense jungle of blades. The fruits of your constant battle training with the Nakatomi are being displayed at this very moment. Time to seize the chance. Still, carelessness at this conjecture could be fatal. The option of slashing upwards with his lowered left katana is still open and there is always his other free katana to worry about. So you reposition, crossing diagonally to the right then lunging upwards with your katana.

At this angle, Kenma isn’t fast enough to block or dodge. The tip of your blade meets the side of his ribcage, causing him to stagger. You stride forwards while lowering your katana to the left to make another slash. It makes full contact with his stomach, sending Kenma to the ground.

The battle is won!

The cheering of the crowd intensifies as you walk forward to lend him a hand, but he slaps it away. “I don’t need a coward to help me up.”

Suddenly, amidst the nobles’ seats, a voice drowns out the relentless human noise. “OI, KENMA. SHOW SOME RESPECT. HE JUST BEAT YOU FAIR AND SQUARE. THE ONLY COWARD I SEE IS YOU.” Even if it was directed at Kenma, you feel a shudder down your spine. Turning in the direction of the voice, you see an old man, probably around Master Yasashiku’s age, glaring at Kenma. His face turns pale and he reluctantly apologises, bowing respectfully before making his way out of the arena before you can say anything.
>>
>>4726458

The next match is Asahiko’s who happens to be facing an independent swordsman. The fighting looks close, but you know full well that Asahiko isn’t using his full strength. Most likely, he’s trying to conserve his energy for future matches. Not even a minute into the match, and he manages to overwhelm his opponent with sheer speed.

The older Nakatomi brothers finish their matches, if you could even call them matches, without a hitch. Hadetoshi faced off against another Senmori swordsman, toying with him until he found an opportunity to finish him off with a flashy move. Yorutoshi was much the same, except he was up against a Mekura-Ji monk.

A few matches later and it’s Tadatoshi’s turn. Like Asahiko, he’s also facing an independent swordsman, albeit with a little more trouble. Regardless of whether it's due to Asahiko being the better swordsman or Tadatoshi’s opponent being more skilled, Tadatoshi ends the battle cleanly.

At the end of the first round, half of the participants are eliminated from the tournament. Now only 32 participants are left. Your battle with Asahiko is at hand. Once again, you two are the first to fight.

What’s your strategy?

>Asahiko is a very aggressive fighter. Employ the same plan as before and keep your distance, a chance to attack will come eventually.

>Letting Asahiko take control of the battle is a sure road to defeat. Attempt to defeat him quickly with a Reed Cutter, then follow up with aggressive attacks.

>Play it defensively and keep up pressure through counterattacks.

Three people please roll a 3d15. 33-37 (inclusive) and you win the fight, but your Reed Cutter fails. 38 or higher and your Reed Cutter succeeds.

Well, we did better than we ever have in tournaments prior. So any win is a win in my book. We even managed to almost win in our second round. If that doesn't say "progress" then I don't know what to say amigo.

We were one single inch away from victory. I hope Asahiko had fun at least.

Damn.

Asahiko is the first to bolt to his end of the arena, familiarising himself with the weight of the wooden katana-wakizashi pair. You don’t delay either, moving swiftly to your end of the arena. This is almost like a repeat of your arrival at the Nakatomi dojo, but this time, you’d put up much more of a fight.

“COME!” He shouts, signalling the start of the battle.

Just like in your many sparring matches, Asahiko is the first to initiate. You crouch down low, katana held along the left side of your body, left leg fully extended backwards. You managed to pull this off before. If that’s the case then this time would be no different! The dust beneath your feet rises as you launch yourself forward. Asahiko remains unfazed. On the contrary, he seems to pick up some speed.

In what amounted to a second, the two of you meet. Your blade arcs low to the ground towards his ankles while Asahiko’s katana comes crashing down from above like a waterfall. No matter, your blade is closer to his body. It’ll only be a flash until it comes into contact with… nothing? Amazingly, both his feet are in the air, his legs tucked close to his chest as his katana continues its downward descent.

Shit.

You feel your heart pounding faster and faster, shaking you to the core.

The rhythmic thumping intensifies your already grave sense of sense of crisis.

You aren’t going to die, of course, but it sure feels like it right now.

Cursing under your breath with what little time you have before you receive a heavy beating to your back, you twist your body around to face him in the air. Strangely, he’s once more moving extremely slowly. You can see it clearly, the smooth downward motion of the wooden katana. And if you can see it, you can counter it! This sudden realisation, together with your back landing flat on the ground, pulls you back to reality. Your katana just barely makes it over to deflect his blade away, allowing you a brief moment to roll to safety back on your feet.

“What’s wrong Nobuyasu? That attack was much faster previously!”
>>
>>4727770

Asahiko continues to press his attack, giving you no further respite. Relentless attack after attack comes raining in from all directions which you barely keep up with. Luckily, an opening shows itself. You execute Returning Wind, moving yourself away from Asahiko’s area of attack. It’s your turn to go on the offensive.

Three steps forward place him at the very edge of your attack range.

You perform a series of broad slashes, squeezing every bit of range into your attacks as possible. Asahiko is forced to either move back or parry, but the latter is extremely difficult in his position. Eventually, he manages to block your katana with his own and steps forward to lunge with his wakizashi. You try and pivot to the left to avoid it, but it narrowly grazes the side of your chest. He follows up with a slash from his now free katana, shattering any chance you have for a counterattack in your new position.

You’re forced to retreat, but now it places you back to where Asahiko is at the edge of your attack range again. Perfect! You resume your earlier onslaught of wide attacks, pushing him back even further from before. Both of you are near the ropes that signaled the boundary of the arena. Asahiko is running out of space to move. If you keep this up, victory would be at hand.
>>
>>4727771

Seemingly with no way out, Asahiko makes a dash to the side, turning his back to you. Now’s your chance! You quickly catch up to him, eager to make the final blow. Yet, when he makes a brief glance behind, your face goes pale. Like a bird circling in the air, Asahiko jumps and turns clockwise, both his blades making a straight course for your shoulder.
>>
>>4727772

You can’t block it in time.

The moment he lunged with his wakizashi, you fell into his trap, hook, line, and sinker.

Both your eyes meet each other before the deed is done. “Good fight” is what you say to each other, without the need for words.

You can’t help but smile.
>>
>>4727773

On the ground, in throbbing pain, Asahiko looms over you like a tall mountain with his hand stretched out. With his help, you stand. Both of you take your bows before leaving the arena. The sound of the audience is deafening, even the nobles are applauding furiously.

“Beat that Hadetoshi guy for me.” you whisper to Asahiko on your way out.

“Heh, I’ll try my best.”

Well, with that, you guess your time in Moriyama is finally at an end. After your match with Asahiko, the three Nakatomi brothers and him proceeded all the way to the fifth round where, as fate would have it, Asahiko faced off against Hadetoshi and Tadatoshi faced off against Yorutoshi. Both fights came in extremely close. Even Yorutoshi was shocked at how well Tadatoshi was keeping up. But ultimately, the older Nakatomi pair proved victorious which left a bit of a bitter taste in your mouth, but skill was to be respected. In the final round, Yorutoshi managed to come up on top after an extremely long drawn-out battle, filled with fancy shows of swordplay.
>>

The next day, you sit down by the dojo courtyard, pondering about the tournament. Usually at this time, disciples would be training away inside, but just after the Moriyama Spring Tournament, all disciples are given the day off to rest. You hear the door slide behind you, accompanied by soft footsteps headed for your direction.

“Good morning, master.”

“Morning.” Master Yasashiku takes a seat beside you. “Your performance yesterday was better than I expected.”

“Thank you. It was only possible with the help of you and the Nakatomi school.”

“Nonsense. It was your own effort. All I did was instruct you here and there.”

“How are the other disciples doing?”

“Asahiko and Tadatoshi are sleeping away as we speak. I assume the rest are doing the same. Anyway, I take it that you’re leaving soon. So, where’re you planning to go after this?”

“Hmmm, I’m not sure. Maybe one of the neighbouring prefectures or the ones neighbouring them. Maybe even to another one of the schools in Nakatomi.”

Master Yasashiku chuckles. “Take your time to decide, but I do have one request I’d like to make, though it’s quite a selfish one.” He pauses for a moment before continuing. “Could you take Tadatoshi along with you? That boy has serious potential. In truth, the skill disparity between him and his brothers can be overcome with just a few years of training. But, what will truly set him apart from them is experience. I’m sure you’ve seen during the tournament, but those two older blockheads like to use flashy moves that are sure to get them killed in a fight. They lack experience, but they also don’t have the luxury of leaving the capital due to their responsibilities. My brother will never let them go. Tadatoshi, on the other hand, doesn’t have to deal with any of this, so I’d like it if he could forge out for experience. However, if I send him out alone, his pride will probably get him in trouble with some character he shouldn’t mess with.”

“And that’s where I come in?”

“Correct. It’ll be good for him to learn from someone like you.”

Accept Master Yasashiku’s request?
>Yes.

>No.

Where will you go next?
>Minamoto Prefecture: The place of one of the oldest mountains of Kiyoshu, Mt. Kuromizu, an inactive volcano which erupted countless ages ago. Practitioners of the Minamoto style can only be described as “like a volcano”. When defending, they are extremely grounded, sturdy, like a tall proud mountain. When attacking, they do so in a violent burst, like a forceful eruption, before returning to their defensive stance. The ultimate goal of the Minamoto style is to end a fight with a single forceful cut.

>Taira Prefecture: Known as the land of cherry blossoms because of its high density of cherry blossom trees. The Taira style is hailed as the most beautiful of the nine styles, embodying the cycles of wilting and blooming of cherry blossoms. At the same time, it is not to be underestimated. A swordsman of the Taira can easily take control over the tempo of a battle and drive their opponents into a deadly corner.

>Yamato Prefecture: The very heart of Kiyoshu, where the sun shines brightest, enveloping the endless stretches of farmland. It is the desire of many to witness the brilliant Yamato sword style, said to be derived from the magnificent sun itself and taught only to the main branch of the Yamato Clan. However, it is also home to many famous independent sword schools who have produced countless legendary swordsmen over the ages.

>Senmori School (Nakatomi): The direct rival school to the Nakatomi. Instead of using a katana-wakizashi pair, students of the Senmori school use two katanas, opting for greater power in exchange for speed.

>Mekura-Ji Temple (Nakatomi): Formed by the legendary blind general of the Minamoto, Banshou Ichirai. After the Unification War 30 years ago, he became a monk and wandered the lands of Kiyoshu before ultimately settling in Nakatomi 15 years ago to form Mekura-Ji Temple. Now, he trains monks in the art of the spear, halberd, and glaive. The Blind Warrior Monks of Mekura-Ji Temple, as people call them, train with blindfolds on, emulating their master’s blindness.

learning the blindfolded way of the warrior monks will be good for us, they'll help us with our reactions and to be able to fight without hesitation. plus it would be good to learn how to use a polearm, if we use it in conjunction with our katana we would be able to fight at range and close up.

We aren't learning a Polearm if we can help it, since it is our sword we must improve on. The blind fighting though probably isn't going to be completely learned in a months time but the principles would help immensely.

You grin. “After all the Nakatomi school has done for me, how can I decline your request? I’d like it if I could continue training with Tadatoshi anyway.” Having a sparring partner tag along on your journey sounds like a great boon to your training. That is, if Tadatoshi agrees to spar.

“Perfect. Enjoy the rest of your stay in the dojo. You’re free to leave whenever, so just tell me a day in advance so I can prepare the necessary arrangements.”

“You have my utmost gratitude, Master. In that case, I’ll depart in three days.”

“Alright.”
>>
>>4734483

You spend the afternoon thinking about where to go next. Later in the night, you spot Asahiko walking through the corridor. “Nobuyasu! I was just about to look for you.”

“Good evening. What’s the matter?” You ask.

“Nothing serious. I heard you’re leaving soon, is that right?”

“Indeed. In about three days' time.”

“Well, I have some good sake in my room. I thought maybe we could have a drink before you left to commemorate your progress and performance at the tournament.”

“Sure. I’d be happy to.”

As you say that, another figure approaches from the end of the corridor. When you turn to look at it, so does Asahiko.

“Ah, Lord Tadatoshi! Care to join us for a drink?” Asahiko calls out.

Knowing Tadatoshi, he’d probably refuse. But hey, no harm in trying, right? Tadatoshi stops in his tracks and gives you and Asahiko a puzzled look, as if to ask “What are you asking?” Seeing him standing there in silence, Asahiko laughs heartily and drags you two by your arms down the hallway. “Ah well. I’ll just take it as a yes!” Tadatoshi is quite taken aback at this and tries to break free, but Asahiko doesn’t let go easily and he eventually just follows along.

You’re dragged to a door just a turn down the hall. Asahiko finally releases his monstrous grip on the both of you and opens the door. “Come on in.” You enter first, followed by Tadatoshi who walks in reluctantly. The room is about the same size as the one you’ve been staying in for the past month. At the center is a small table which you kneel around. Tadatoshi, with a mildly irritated expression, kneels at the opposite end of the table while Asahiko fumbles through a drawer looking for cups.

“Found them.” He says while laying out three small cups and a bottle of sake on the table, then proceeding to fill them. “Let’s drink, brothers!” You raise your cup with Asahiko. On the other hand, Tadatoshi just lifts his up slightly from the table. The three of you take your drinks. Asahiko downs his whole cup in one gulp. You finish about half of the contents, the warm sake flowing down your throat, filling it with a comfortable burning sensation. Tadatoshi only sips a bit from his cup.

“This is some good stuff.” You comment.

“Right? What do you think, Lord Tadatoshi?” Asahiko asks.

“Just Tadatoshi is fine... It’s good.” Tadatoshi says flatly.

“Good, good, then drink up!” Asahiko exclaims.

The night slowly passes. After a few more cups, all your faces are flushed with a faint hue of red. You feel a little tipsy and you guess the same goes for Tadatoshi since he’s started being a little more talkative than usual. Asahiko is still the same as as always. He must drink pretty frequently.
>>
>>4734484

The conversation eventually lands on your departure. Asahiko downs another cup in one shot. “So, where are you going next, Nobuyasu?”

You take a small sip. “Mekura-Ji Temple.”

“Interesting, they’re not swordsmen though.”

“But you’ve seen them fight. Their senses are incredibly honed despite having blindfolds on. I think it’ll be good to learn from them.”

“Of course. Sometimes the way forward on the path of the sword requires one to devote himself to pursuits not directly related to the blade.”

You shift your gaze to Tadatoshi. “Have you heard about the arrangements from Master Nakatomi?”

He simply nods. “It’ll just be an excuse for me to search for my master.”

Asahiko looks at both of you clueless. “Wait, what’s happening?”

“Oh, Tadatoshi will be travelling with me when I leave.”

“HHHHUUHHH? NO FAIR! LET ME JOIN.” He cries out before his expression turns to one of dejection. “But I have my clan responsibilities here in Moriyama… So I can’t, even if you let me…”

“Hahaha, next time then. I’ll be sure to bring you along.”

And so, the night continues on...
>>
>>4734486

The next day, the disciples’ regular training schedule resumes as per normal. Even though you’re about to leave, you still join them for sword swinging drills and sparring. Some time in the afternoon, Iga pays you another visit through the window.

“Good day, Nobuyasu.”

“You could just ask me to meet you outside y’know.”

“Wouldn’t want to inconvenience you. Anyway, what’s the plan?”

“We’re heading to Mekura-Ji Temple in 2 days and Tadatoshi will be coming along.”

“The archer? How’d that happen?”

“Master Nakatomi wants him to go out for experience. He asked me to accompany him. But in this case, it's more like he’s accompanying us.”

“Okay, interesting. But my priority is still to protect you so if something happens and I have to abandon the archer boy, I’m honourbound to make that choice.”

“If something happens, try to save him if you can, though.”

“Understood. Oh yes, and I have more news about Xu. Interested?”

“Yes.”

“I saw that same official walking around town again. According to what I heard, the barbarians have broken into Northern Xu and are currently involved with heavy fighting with the Empire’s forces as we speak. Information takes time to reach my ears so this information could very well be outdated at this point. For all we know, the barbarians could have advanced even further by now.”

The North of Xu is a vast distance from the South, where your cousin, Fukumatsu is staying. He should be alright, you console yourself but can’t help but say “That’s worrying.”

“It’s on the other side of the world so don’t worry about it too much.”

“Yeah...”

“Then I’ll see you at the gate in two days.”

“See you in the morning on the day itself.”
>>
>>4734489

Two days pass by in a flash. You wake up for the last time from the white futon provided to you. After packing your things and dressing up properly, you step outside your room and walk to the dojo entrance. Standing there is Asahiko, Tadatoshi, Master Yasashiku and another man roughly his age.

The unknown man takes a step forward. “I take it that you are Lord Hiroshi?”

He looks familiar, but you can’t put your finger on it. “Yes, milord.”

“I am Nakatomi Torishiku, Daimyo of Nakatomi prefecture. I watched your match with Asahiko a few days ago.”

You bow respectfully. “Please forgive me for not recognizing you, milord.”

“A minor matter. Please raise your head.”

You do as instructed and he continues. “My brother has told me a bit about you. I have no doubt you’ll take care of my troublesome son over there?”

“I’ll try my best.”

Tadatoshi looks away in annoyance and Master Yasashiku interjects. “Let’s get moving.”

Along the way to the city gates, you chat a bit with Asahiko and Lord Nakatomi. The city is quiet as the sun just rises from the horizon, filling the sky with a nice shade of purplish-orange. When you arrive, there is a servant tending to two horses just by a stable next to the exit. Upon spotting you and your party, he quickly makes his way to Lord Nakatomi.

“The horses you requested are ready to go, milord.”

“Good, you’re dismissed.” After the servant leaves his presence, Lord Nakatomi walks up to Tadatoshi and puts a hand on his shoulder. “My son, it would be for the best that you give up on the bow. But as long as you continue pursuing the sword, I have no qualms about what you do.”

Tadatoshi looks conflicted but ultimately nods at his father’s words.

While they continue their conversation, Asahiko says his parting words. “I guess this is goodbye, Nobuyasu. I look forward to dueling again next time we meet.”

“Same. Next time, I’ll be the one to win, hehe”

Master Yasashiku, one arm folded behind his back, hands you a map together with a dark green sageo. “All students of the Nakatomi school are given one. Since you trained with us for a while, I decided to get one made for you.”

“Thank you, Master Nakatomi, and to the rest of the Nakatomi school. I’ll be sure to visit again in the future.”

“You’re welcome back any time, but our next meeting will be next year at the Taiyo Festival, no? This old master is interested in seeing how much further you can go.”

The sound of a horse neighing catches your attention and you turn to see Tadatoshi mounted and ready to go. You say your goodbyes to those seeing you off and climb onto your horse. Before long, they recede from your vision as they walk back into the city. Now all there is to do is to wait for Iga.

“Ready?” Tadatoshi asks.

“Hold on a moment, my companion should be here shortly.”

“The ninja?”

“Indeed” says a third voice from above.

Looking up, you see Iga perched on a branch. You don’t know when he got there, maybe he’s been there even before you arrived.

“Let’s go.” You say.
>>
>>4734496

Unsurprisingly, Iga manages to keep up with the two of you on horseback, not that either of you are moving that fast. According to the map, Mekura-Ji temple is just a three day journey westward from Moriyama. The temple is located near the western coastline, just before the tall rocky cliffs overlooking the western sea. In just three and a half days, the grand view of leafy green against gray stone appears before you, made even more magnificent by the presence of a temple built at the heart of this natural landscape.

Closer to the temple, you make out a lone monk with a broom sweeping the temple entrance. The moment he enters your line of vision, he turns to look in your direction with frightening accuracy even with his blindfold on before returning to his chores. When the clopping of hooves stops, the monk in turn stops his sweeping and looks at you, you think.

“Greetings travelers, what brings you to our humble temple?”

“We wish to train here temporarily and learn the ways of the Mekuraji-Ji warrior monks.” You respond.

“Hmmm, but aren’t you a swordsman? And the other one. You’re carrying a quiver full of arrows as well.” That’s strange, how can he tell if he’s blindfolded. “And the third one, what’s he doing up in the trees?” Your face goes pale for a moment. Even you didn’t expect him to pick up on Iga’s presence. Tadatoshi looks as spooked as you are.

“We may walk different martial paths, but all the same, we wish to learn the blindfolded ways of the Mekura-Ji.”

“Ohhh. There’s no rule against letting travelers stay in the temple. In fact, we’re encouraged to help travelers when we can.” The monk stops his sweeping and gestures to follow him. “Come with me.”

You call Iga to descend from the trees and the three of you thank the monk. Despite his face being covered, you can tell Iga is the one most shaken by the monk’s abilities. Just in front of the temple grounds, there are a handful of other monks either sparring with each other, meditating in groups or alone, or cleaning. When you walk by, you draw the attention of those not in meditation and of course, they’re also blindfolded.

“That’s incredible.” You say to the monk leading you.

“What is? Ah, you mean how we can “see” with our blindfolds on?”

“Yeah. Nothing short of impressive, and that’s an understatement.”

“Hahaha, when you’ve led a large portion of your life without seeing, you get used to it.”

What exactly ‘large portion’ refers to, you don’t know, but it certainly isn’t a short duration, likely to be years or even decades. Along the rest of the way, you and your party introduce yourselves to the monk who reveals his name to be Shinran. Just Shinran. Apparently he doesn’t have a last name.

The four of you enter the temple and head straight to the top of the five floors. The rooms are dimly lit, without a source of light to be found. It’s difficult to move around without stumbling, but thankfully, you don’t bump into anything.

Inside, there are a few monks meditating alone and others wiping the floors. Unlike those outside, they pay little mind to you. At the top of the stairs is a single door leading into the entire fifth floor with the smell of incense seeping through. Shinran knocks three times with a specific rhythm. An uncomfortable silence follows. A moment later, you hear what sounds like the base of a staff hitting the floor twice which prompts Shinran to open the door.

The incense smell intensifies, but it causes no discomfort. On the contrary, it somehow makes you feel a little more relaxed. Sitting at the center of the room is an old man, almost as old as Master Yasashiku, sitting in front of a bowl of incense and a small wooden Buddha idol. His staff, presumably the one that made the sound just now, leans against his still and tranquil form. You infer that this must be the famed Banshou Ichirai, who once struck fear into the hearts of many, in direct contrast with the gentle looking man before you.

Shinran sits in a kneeling position. “Master, these three warriors have come to learn the ways of the Mekura-Ji.”

“To learn?” The old man scans the three of you, pausing to take a good “look” at each person. “A swordsman, a sword wielding archer, and a… Hmmm… A Ninja? You three, please take a seat, I’d like to hear you speak your intentions.”

“I am Hiroshi Nobuyasu, a swordsman on his warrior’s pilgrimage. I wish to learn how to fight blindfolded, or at least, hone my senses in combat.”

“Nakatomi Tadatoshi. Traveling with Nobuyasu to train and find my master.”

“Hayashi Iga... I’m serving under Nobuyasu.”

“Hiroshi, Nakatomi, Hayashi… It seems like today my Mekura-Ji temple has been visited by tigers. My name is Banshou Ichirai, as you probably know. In my life, I have slaughtered countless men and seen men slaughter countless others, but I’ve given up on the path of killing. The path of the warrior is one of bloodshed and claiming lives. That means I have given up on instructing warriors. However, you three are free to stay. Shinran, I’ll leave them to you.”

Best to start with a good impression, especially if we decide to eventually forego bloodshed ourselves someday.

I mean we should accept his decision, but I take issue with his view on the guiding philosophy. Yes we kill people but we don't do it willy nilly.
I also think we should ask if it is just him who refuses to teach us or if he doesn't want his school's benefits taught to others, just to be certain. If he puts a blanket ban, then we should move on.

This was to be expected somewhat. You stay silent for a bit. The path forward was never going to be so smooth sailing. You are lucky that Master Yasashiku even entertained your request back in Moriyama. You can’t expect future teachers to be so willing to teach. Ichirai’s decision is unfortunate, but you can at least try and convince him, if not, let him know your true thoughts on the matter.

"I do not believe the path of the Samurai is one of claiming lives, it is to be loyal and true to the beliefs of Bushido and honour. Bloodshed is incidental, and perhaps even inevitable, in carrying out our duty. But it is not the point.” You say. “I do not wish to take lives unless truly necessary.”

“And when is it necessary, young Hiroshi?” Ichirai asks.

“When protecting innocents.” You respond. “I merely wish to improve my abilities to protect the innocent from those who mean them harm, as is the way of honorable samurai. It is my belief that inaction that results in the loss of innocent life is worse than even the act of taking life. Do you not agree?”

Ichirai raises his head, like he’s looking to the heavens for confirmation. He takes a deep breath and exhales slowly. “If only the way was that simple.” There is a certain grief in his voice. “Let me ask. You three, have you slain a man?”

Iga is first to respond. “Too many to count.”

Tadatoshi shakes his head, only to remember that the monk can’t see and answers with an indifferent “No.”

Without knowing it, you grip your swords by the top of their scabbards. There is no way you can forget your first kill. The lifeless expression on that bandit’s eyes as he slowly bled out. The brisk feeling of rending into flesh.

“Yes…” you say not too enthusiastically.

“For the ninja, you understand well the fragility of life, but do not respect it.”

“Young Nakatomi, you are fortunate not to have experienced bloodshed yet.”

“Young Hiroshi, I can feel the weight of your words… Yet, I know too well how the heat of battle turns one into a savage beast.”

That last line resonates with you. The most frightening part of your first kill was how you carried it out without a second thought in the moment. Granted, a second thought would’ve likely meant you wouldn’t be here right now, but you get the rough meaning behind the retired general’s words.

“Sadly, I must still refuse you at this point.”

“I see…” The dismay in your voice is apparent. “With all due respect, while I understand your stance on this, will you forbid us from trying to learn from your students?”

“No, but that’s if they agree to teach you.”

Hearing that lifts your spirits a little. “Thank you, Master Banshou. We will take our leave now.”

Ichirai nods. “Enjoy your stay.”

And with that, Shinran walks you out of the temple to a building by the side which appears to be some form of guest building. The interior isn’t too big, but it's large enough. There are four futons laid out in one corner, a table by the side, and a single window giving you a view of the Temple grounds.

“Though the master may not be willing to teach, I can try to in his stead.” Shinran says as he’s about to take his leave.

“That’d be great.” You reply. You’re pleasantly surprised by his offer.

“I’m not anywhere near master’s level though, so please bear with me.”

“That’s not a problem.”

“Then I’ll see you tomorrow morning.”

He bows and you reciprocate, unsure of whether he can tell. When Shinran is gone, Iga speaks up. “That Banshou Ichirai, I don’t really like him. That wishy-washy philosophy stuff only gets you killed in battle.”

“But ninjas avoid battles. Don’t you and your people prefer sneak attacks?” Tadatoshi says sarcastically.

“Hah, you got a point there. Still, I don’t get what he meant when he said I don’t respect life.”

“Perhaps he’s referring to your disregard for life.” You take a guess. “Anyway, are you going to participate in the training this time, Iga?”

Iga’s tone shifts to a more serious one. “Personally, I’m quite interested. There have only been a handful of people who could spot me hiding. That Shinran fella happens to be the only blind one of the lot. I wanna know how they do it.”

“Tadatoshi?”

“I don’t mind. But not being able to use my eyes will be weird.”

“Good, then let’s rest up for tomorrow.”
>>

The next day, you wake up while the sky is still dark. The air outside is a little chilly, but you carry out your sword drills regardless. A few moments later, you spot a few of the monks exit the temple building into the temple grounds. Amongst them is Shinran, with a quarterstaff in one hand a whole head longer than his height, and three strips of cloth in the other.

You take a few steps in his direction which instantly catches his attention. “Good morning, Nobuyasu. You’re up early.”

“How did you know it was me?”

“Everyone walks differently, so everyone has different footsteps. I use that to tell who’s walking where and such.”

That makes sense. Sort of how you can differentiate people’s voices.

“Where are the other two?”

“Still asleep, I can go wake them up.” you say.

Shinran chuckles“That’ll be good.”

You open the door to the guest room, and as expected, those two are still sound asleep.

“Oi.” you call out. No response. You try again, this time a bit louder. This time with a low groan from Iga. He’s awake, just not very fresh yet, or so you think. He manages to sit up no problem, like he was awake the whole time.

“You were awake?” you ask.

“Been so for the past two hours.”

“Why didn’t you get up? Ah- whatever, just come outside. Time for training.”

“Roger.”

Tadatoshi just turns to his side to squint at you. Unlike Iga, he’s just woken up. When you think he’s about to get up, he lowers his head back down to his pillow. You sigh, unsure of what to do. Did times like this call for more imposing measures? Tadatoshi isn’t a kid, so it would feel pretty weird to be hounding him like a parent. In the midst of your indecision, Iga just walks up beside him.

“Don’t worry, I’ll handle this.”

Just what is he going to do, you wonder. But all thoughts of an elegant solution instantly fade from your mind when Iga gives Tadatoshi a good ol’ kick to the stomach. Tadatoshi’s eyes shoot open faster than an arrow in flight and he sits up glaring at the masked man looking down on him.

“I’ll remember that. I was going to get up soon.” He says while standing.

Tadatoshi is visibly annoyed but doesn’t retaliate. After all, it’s not like that kick made him fly across the room. Either way, your job is done and the three of you head outside to find Shinran leaning beside the door.
>>
>>4747345

He holds out the three pieces of cloth in his hand. “Ready?”

The three of you answer by taking the strips each and following Shinran who leads you to a secluded part of the temple away from the other disciples. The sound of quarterstaves hitting each other or the ground fades away here, leaving you with only nature’s melody.

“Before an infant runs, he must walk. Before it walks, it must crawl. So first, you must crawl. Put those blindfolds on and sit down.”

Now we’re talking. You tie the blindfold around your head, obscuring your entire vision. All you can see is black, and if not for the sound of tightening fabric to your left and right, you wouldn’t be able to tell if Tadatoshi or Iga followed suit.

“It is natural for those with the gift of sight to rely heavily on it. However, for most people, their sight drowns out their other senses rather than complementing them. They ignore their ears, their sense of touch, and their sense of smell when connecting with heaven and earth.”

From the direction of Shinran’s voice, it sounds like he’s sitting down with the three of you.

“Sit down and focus. See not with your eyes, but with your nose and ears. I will do this with you.”

The instruction is more abstract than you’d like, but you give it a shot. Tuning in to the ambient noise. Apart from the distant sounds of sparring and the occasional rustling of leaves and chirping of birds, there is nothing but silence. You can’t smell anything but the morning fragrance of grassy dew. So this is what being blind is like…

Fifteen minutes later, Tadatoshi speaks up. “I don’t understand what I’m supposed to be ‘seeing’.”

“Neither do I.” Iga adds.

Honestly, you feel the same, but don’t want to put it so bluntly.

“This will take time. Right now, just focus on isolating the sounds. Focus on a single sound and see with that.”

You ponder on Shiran's words for a moment. "I'll try that."

"Guess I'll give it a shot too." Iga adds.

Tadatoshi grunts in acknowledgement.

Nature is composed of an infinitude of audial stimulus, sounds blending together to form a complex tapestry of noise. And of all the sounds present, you have to pick and isolate one, a task easier said than done. The sound of birds is muffled by the rustling of leaves, the sound of leaves obscures itself, and the chirping of birds hides behind the intangible calls of woodland critters. Put simply, the sounds are nested within themselves, weaving webs that ensnare your ears.

With your sight sealed, everything feels louder, and an uncomfortable feeling nags at you to pull your blindfold off. You sit unsettled by your current vulnerable state, calm on the outside but incredibly tense inside. Perhaps this is what’s clouding your senses?

You take a series of deep breaths, slowly clearing your mind of stray thoughts and emotions. This is no different from steeling your nerves with a blade in your hand. Trying once more, the mass of noise bombards your eardrums.

Rustling leaves…

Chirping birds…

Unending droning of cicadas…

As a whole, it’s all clear to you. However, there is one sound that stands out - the whistling of the wind. It swishes gently, moving the tree branches, swaying nature as it pleases. It brushes against the temple’s walls and people, you included. Where there are narrow openings, the winds howl, where it is wide, the winds hum a low song.

Was this a breakthrough? “I think I got it!” you exclaim in your excitement.

“Shhhh, focus.” Shinran says softly.

Next thing you know, the sensation of picking up on the wind disappears. Ah shit, you gotta start all over again. At least feeling it once provides you with a reference.

“Sorry, let me try again.” you say undeterred.

More time passes. You estimate the sun would be hanging high up in the sky now. It’s been about two hours or so since you’ve started this meditation exercise with each one of you making varying progress. Without a doubt, Iga is the most proficient at this, followed by you, then Tadatoshi. Even Shinran is somewhat impressed at Iga’s capabilities which he attributes to having fought frequently in the dark.
>>
>>4752196

“Everyday, you’ll be meditating for two hours to hone your other senses. Let’s move on to something else now.” Shinran says.

“This is really difficult…” Tadatoshi sighs. “Can we take off our blindfolds now?”

“No, of course not. You’ll have to keep them on the whole time or there will be no point to your training.”

“Oh” Tadatoshi’s jaw drops. “Wait what?”

This comes as a shock to both you and Iga as well. You thought at least you’d be able to take this thing off for a while.

“What about when we’re eating and bathing?” you ask, even though you’re certain of the response you’ll get.

“Naturally, you’ll keep them on as well. This is the fastest way to get used to this. I guess one exception would be when you’re practicing with your own weapons, but I encourage you to keep your blindfolds on nonetheless.”

Iga nods with his arms folded. “Makes sense.”

You agree. “Yep. Let us move on then.”
>>
>>4752210

You three try your best to follow Shinran by the sound of his footsteps, bumping into each other more than you can count. At one point, you swear a fight was about to break out between Tadatoshi and Iga from their mutual clumsiness, though you figure a lot of the bumping was actually done by you.

At where you stop, the wind feels unrestrained, free to flow, cooling your slightly sweaty form. The space is more open than before, and the sound of quarterstaves is more well-defined. You’re back at the front of the temple, you conclude.

“Spread out and sit down again. This next exercise might hurt.” There is a hint of eagerness in Shinran’s voice which makes you wonder if you should start fearing for your life. “It’s really simple, I’m going to behind each of you at random and swing my staff. You just need to dodge.”

At this moment, you know that indeed this is going to hurt. Even without a blindfold, your senses aren’t that much sharper compared to an average swordsman. You sit in the middle with Tadatoshi to your right, and Iga to your left, just like before.

Shinran walks behind Tadatoshi. “Let’s start.”

BONK.

That was definitely the sound of wood bashing someone’s head.

“You tried to guess where I was going to hit weren’t you? Don’t guess, react.”

As Tadatoshi groans in pain, Shinran’s footsteps draw nearer and nearer. You prepare yourself, but the footsteps don’t stop, becoming fainter again as he makes his way to Iga.

BONK.

This time it’s softer, but it still sounds like it hurt a lot.

“Oh? You were able to dodge in the right direction, but your reaction was too slow.”

Shinran then walks behind you. Every hair on your neck is standing as you await his attack. You try your best to focus behind you, listening for any changes in footwork and, most importantly, the sound of wood splitting air. Seconds pass and it doesn’t come, leaving you feeling even more on edge. Finally, you hear a subtle shifting sound from the ground followed by a throbbing pain from your head before you can even realise it.

BONK.

The hit landed without any warning at all.

“Relax, or you won’t be able to feel anything.”

You take Shinran’s advice to heart. After more rounds, it becomes apparent that you and Tadatoshi are really bad at this, neither of you avoiding a single attack. At least Iga managed to dodge a handful of hits, not much, but some were better than none. At the end of it, your heads are extremely sore.

“Hmmmm, we’ll need a lot of work to get you guys in shape. Especially you two, Nobuyasu, Tadatoshi. This is it for today, we’ll continue tomorrow.”

You thank Shinran and bow, followed by your two companions. Now you have time to train on your own.

“Shinran, hold on a second.” you quickly call out before he walks away.

“Yeah?”

“Could we perhaps continue the dodging exercises?”

“You sure about that? Your head might actually split open.” Shinran replies with a hint of friendly sarcasm.

“What I’m sure of is that I need more practice.”

“Very well then. I don’t mind continuing. What about the rest?”

You hear footsteps walking away from you, towards the guest house you reckon. “I’ll pass.” Tadatoshi says while taking off his blindfold. “I’ll be shooting some arrows in the woods nearby.” Another set of footsteps slowly fades from your vicinity in the direction of the secluded part of the temple you were meditating in. Unlike Tadatoshi, Iga keeps his blindfold on. “I’m going to meditate some more.”

You shrug your shoulders. “Guess it’s just us then.”

“Indeed. We can begin whenever you’re ready.”

While rubbing the back of your head, you sit down, arms pressed down on your legs, determined to dodge at least one of the next few attacks. Shinran takes this to mean you’re ready and walks behind you. Every step he takes rouses your anxiety within. What are you so afraid of? Why is it so hard to keep a calm mind? Thoughts like these come in left and right, only stopping when they are rudely interrupted by another hit to your head.

“Breathe, Nobuyasu.”

That’s right. Breathing. You need to clear your mind and loosen your body, just like just now. The spring air fills and empties your lungs, yet the thought of a sneak attack lingers at the back of your head (literally).

“What’s on your mind?” Shinran asks in a concerned tone.

Honestly, you’re not quite sure yourself, but try to muster the best response. “The sheer uncertainty of it all. I can’t tell when you’re going to attack at all.”

“I see… Let us start simpler then. For now, I’ll tell you when I’m about to strike, so you can focus on dodging correctly. Would that help?”

“Let’s try that.”
>>
>>4756469

“Ready.” You call out after another series of breaths.

“I’ll attack in three seconds. Brace yourself.”

Three seconds, way more than the average reaction time of a warrior. Two seconds pass in complete silence. You hear the shuffling of feet at the start of the final second, indicating that the quarterstaff is making a collision course straight to your cranium. This time, you hear a ‘swoosh’ and instinctively tilt your body to the right. Still, the staff hits you on the head.

“That was better. You managed to react at least, and in the right direction as well.”

“I think I was just lucky there.”

“Luck or not, you should reflect on it.”

You do just that. Needless to say, being warned about an incoming attack and anticipating one is as different as heaven and earth. Being able to react in such a situation isn’t much of an issue, so the focus is mainly on reacting appropriately. Your dodging to the right was intuition at work. You couldn’t consciously tell the direction of the staff, but your body must have felt it. To grasp the essence of this exercise, you need to bring forward this sense from the subconscious to conscious thought.

“Let’s continue.”

Another two hours pass. You’re getting the hang of it, albeit at a snail’s pace. Shinran feels like it’s time to call it a day. You're inclined to agree. This took up significant mental strength, any more practice wouldn’t benefit you as much as resting. You could pick up the blade right now, but you feel you’d be like throwing away your newly acquired gains if you took off your blindfold. On the other hand, given your current proficiency with the blindfold, sword practice blindfolded would yield meagre results. So, you rest and reflect.
>>
>>4756471

Four days later, you’re in the midst of dodging quarterstaves when you hear distant footsteps outside the temple. They are heavy and deliberate, likely belonging to a man walking with purpose. Your training is put on pause as Shinran’s attention is diverted away to the walking man edging closer and closer to the temple grounds.

Eventually, he stops just in front of the entrance. “Is this the place to find Commander Banshou Ichirai?” His voice is a little hoarse and aged, but full of presence and authority.

Shinran walks out to greet him. “Greetings traveler, indeed this is where Master Banshou currently resides.”

“Could I speak with him?”

“The master might be busy right now, but I can go check. Might I ask for your name?”

“Just tell him Enkun is here to visit.”

“Alright, one moment sir.” Shinran says while turning to the three of you. “Sorry, guys, let me deal with this first. We’ll resume in a bit.”

Shinran walks off to the temple, leaving the three of you with the stranger who calls himself Enkun. To your surprise, he walks up to you. “Say, what’s a swordsman doing blindfolded at a temple?”

“We’re training.”

“Training blindfolded, eh? Can’t say it’s a bad way to train. Those are some nice swords you have there.”

“Thank you, they were a gift from my lord.”

“From Daichi?”

What gall to refer to Lord Toumi by his given name alone! You’re annoyed by this, but keep your cool for now.

“Lord Toumi, yes.”

“Ah apologies, that was rude of me.”

You say nothing, now a little eager for Shinran to return and take this man inside the temple or drive him away.

“Looks like he’s going to take a while. Want to have some fun with this old man while I wait?” He continues. The previous presence in his voice is now replaced by an almost childlike cadence.

“What do you mean?

“A friendly duel, obviously! You can use those swords of yours by your waist!”

“With real swords? Are you sure?”

“That’s the only real way to duel.”

An unknown man just appears and requests for a friendly duel with you, with real swords no less. You can’t help but feel that something’s off about this situation. Your suspicions are shared by Iga who decides to give his two cents on the matter. “You don’t have to accept, Nobuyasu.”

Tadatoshi grunts in agreement. “He’s right.”

Despite what your friends tell you, you feel that there’s more than meets the eye about this stranger. Surely, a friendly duel wouldn’t constitute serious injury or death? With this in mind, you consider accepting. Over the past few days, you’ve made some steady progress in the realm of blindness. Nothing compared to Iga, but much better than when you first arrived. You’re curious about where you currently stand, and this duel can do just that.

Reluctantly, you stand and turn around, roughly estimating where the man is standing based on the direction of his voice. “I don’t mind going for a bout.”

“That’s the spirit!” the man exclaims. “Are you going to take off that blindfold?”

“No.” You say indifferently.

“Nobuyasu… I hope you know what you’re getting yourself into.” Iga says with worry in his voice. “At least let me oversee the fight.”

“I’m fine with that. Up to you, young lord.”

“Do as you wish, Iga.”

Your left hand is already holding on to the scabbard of your katana, your right hand just hovering over the hilt. Even though the chance of victory is negligible, there is an eagerness possessing your body.

To the side, you hear Iga whisper something to Tadatoshi together with some footsteps converging around you and the man. Looks like you two have captured the attention of a few curious monks. Given their inhuman sense of hearing, they must have surely caught wind of your conversation and gotten a general understanding of the situation already. The only thing you can’t understand is the appeal of spectating a battle you cannot see.

The man unsheathes his blade which makes a satisfying swoosh sound as it’s taken out of its scabbard. Judging from how long it took to draw, you infer that your opponent should be holding a katana of similar length to yours. “Heh, looks like we’ve attracted quite an audience. Though only two of them can see.”

You respond by drawing your katana and feel your way into a defensive posture, using only your body’s sensations to orient yourself. Forget about offense, you’ll have to push your non-visual senses to their very limits to stand a chance at fending off the stranger.

As is courtesy, you state your name and ask for your opponent’s.

“You can just call me Enkun, haha.” he says nonchalantly.

There’s no movement at all, from the audience, Enkun, or yourself, almost like everyone’s stuck in time. Coupled with the infinite blackness around you, saying you are unsettled would be an understatement. But, the feeling of your sword firmly held in your hands provides some comfort, like a heavy anchor on a boat in a stormy sea. As long as you ground your thoughts to your blade, nothing can unnerve you.

However, the moment Enkun takes his first step, the air seems to change, becoming many times heavier than before. There’s an undeniable majestic quality to it, an indomitable might that seeks to uproot you from where you stand. You can’t see it, but you can tell that if you took your blindfold off, you’d be greeted by a perfect sword form.

Left?

Right?

Up?

Down?

Where is this attack coming from…

His last few steps exude even more power than before. The slight differences in the sound of each step tells you that his final step is made with his right leg, meaning that his blade must be to the left. The only thing left to work out is the angle of attack.

High?

Horizontal?

Low?

Naturally, only the sound of the moving weapon can tell you. It is similar to where determining Shinran’s staff is going to land, something you still have yet to completely get the hang of, but you’d have to do it now. With less than a second before a thin chunk of painfully refined steel slices you to mince meat, you deftly shift your blade upwards, praying that your calculations are correct.

A high pitched screech bellows across the temple grounds, a testament to the earth shattering power behind Enkun’s slash. Blades locked, you’re resisting with all your might against a force that threatens to push you into the ground.

You can’t fight like this, a contest of strength is bound to end badly. With a clear need for distance, there is only one thing to do…

Returning Wind!

You go through the motions which feel as natural as breathing, a result of countless hours of drilling and practice. Furthermore, exploiting your opponent’s strength allows you to propel yourself back with greater speed and distance. Unfortunately, the slash you make while retreating in the air falls short and only serves to delay Enkun’s advance.

Landing somewhat clumsily on your feet, you hold your katana up and cold beads of sweat flow down your back. In the air, you completely lost track of the Enkun’s position. By the time you hear him dash towards you, it’s too late, you don’t have time to ‘see’ it. The shadow of death looms over you, paralyzing you with invisible tendrils that root you in place.

Is this the end?

Was “friendly duel” just a misdirection to get your guard down?

Your life and unfulfilled goals flash in front of your wrapped eyes, just what’ll lie on the other side?

Thankfully, today isn’t the day you find out.

Suddenly, from the temple, you hear a familiar voice roar, “Despicable!”, followed by the sound of metal on stone, and then metal on metal. Gushing with adrenaline, you lift your blindfold to see Enkun’s blades blocked by, not one, not two, but four weapons! These are Iga's wakizashi, both of Tadatoshi’s swords, and unexpectedly, Banshou Ichirai’s metal staff. No doubt, the voice belongs to the latter.

Looking to your left, there is a crowd that Ichirai crossed extremely quickly to block Enkun's attack. Now with your vision unobstructed, you take a good look at him. He’s tall, a whole head taller than you and Tadatoshi, with a decently sized build. His mildly grey hair hangs free and untied, and he’s dressed in blue garments neither too formal nor too casual.

Enkun takes the initiative to withdraw and sheathe his blades, prompting the rest of you to follow suit.

“I don’t see you for two decades and the first thing I see when we reunite is you bullying the weak! Truly despicable!” Banshou Ichirai says with indignation.

“It’s just a little fun, Commander Banshou. I wasn’t going to actually hit him! You didn’t need to fly over the crowd like that, y’know.”

“Sure didn’t seem like that… Anyway, why have you shown up again after so long?”

Enkun assumes a more serious tone when he replies. “There’s something important I need to discuss with you. Can we speak in private?”

“You came here all the way from Yamato, so how can I refuse? Come in and stop disturbing the other monks.” Ichirai turns and raises his voice. “The rest of you continue what you were doing.”

The monks scutter back to their little corners within the temple grounds, clearing the way for Ichirai and Enkun to enter the temple. Just before walking in, Enkun stops and looks towards you. “Hiroshi Nobuyasu was it? Come join us, this also concerns you as a retainer of the Toumi and Yamato. Your friends can come along as well.”

Ichirai also pauses by the entrance. “In that case, Shinran, you come too.”

You stare at Iga who stares at Tadatoshi who stares at you, all none the wiser about the situation. Shinran is the only one to take it as it is and starts walking towards the temple. A moment later, the three of you put your blindfolds back on and follow along.

Climbing the staircase turns out to be trickier than expected, but all of you make it to the top floor with minimal issue. Ichirai lights a stick of incense, filling the room with a calming aroma. “Before we begin, why don’t you reveal your full name?”

“Oh, sure.” Enkun pauses. “Kusunoki Enmei.”

You, Iga, and Tadatoshi, your jaws fall to the ground at the same moment - the Sword Saint Kusunoki Enmei, greatest swordsman in all of Kiyoshu is in your presence. Not only that, you actually had the chance to spar with him and survive.

We never had a chance. Did we?

There won't be a post today, need to sleep early.

I'm actually wondering what a roll of 45 would have given us against a sword saint.

You would've almost perfectly deflected his first strike, then proceed to get absolutely overpowered.

By absolutely overpowered, I mean absolutely rekt.

No words can express your shock, so you simply acknowledge while remaining silent. Tadatoshi similarly keeps quiet and just stares at the Sword Saint. Iga on the other hand manages to compose himself somewhat and asks, “What’s someone as exalted as the Sword Saint doing here?”

“Aren’t you a direct one?” Enmei laughs. “Not that that’s a bad thing. I’m not too big a fan of excessive etiquette. To answer your question, I’m here for the man beside me.”

“Master?” Shinran asks.

“That’s right.”

Ichirai sighs. “And why do you need me?”

“Before I answer that, are you aware of the situation in the East?”

“No, please enlighten me.”

“Put simply, Xu isn’t going to last for much longer. Barbarians have broken through the North and they’re headed straight for the capital. Reports say that it’s only a few months before the country falls.”

“Barbarians? How could they have advanced so quickly?”

“We’re not completely clear on the specifics, but they seem to have developed a new ranged weapon that’s been dominating the battlefield. I’m afraid the age of traditional warfare is coming to an end, Ichirai.”

“What does that have to do with me? I’ve given up on the path of warfare.”

“What doesn’t it have to do with you? What do you think their next target will be after Xu?”

You’ve been keeping silent for fear of speaking out of turn, but you mutter out an answer without even realising it. “Kiyoshu…”

“That’s right.” Enmei responds.

Your blood runs cold at that moment, this is no small matter. If you took off your blindfold now, you expect everyone in the room to have somber expressions on their faces.

The scent of incense begins to fade, prompting Ichirai to light another stick. “This is troubling… But not the whole picture, correct? New weapons don’t shift the tide of war so rapidly. Some of the world’s greatest tacticians come from Xu, they should be able to put up a greater fight even with such a disadvantage.”

“As sharp as ever... Indeed, this is not the only thing the barbarians have against the great dynasty. There’s also been reports of some sort of pill being distributed to their armies. From what we can gather, it seems to be able to raise their physical strength by an absurd amount.”

“That makes more sense. So I take it that you want me on the battlefield when the time comes?”

“Yes. We expect them to arrive within the next 18 to 24 months.”

Suddenly, you hear wood splinter, as if the floorboards are pierced with some metallic object. “Absolutely not! I told you many years ago, my days of killing are over!” Ichirai asserts. There is a certain conflict in his voice. "But… I also cannot stand watching innocents be slaughtered and raped."

You wonder about what profund events the great monk has experienced in his lifetime.

"I thought you might say that, so I was planning to put you on defence instead - our last line of defence just before they reach civilians. How does that sound?"

"Thi- I'll have to think about this."

Enmei's previous cheerfulness returns, as if the tense conversation didn't even happen just now. "Take your time, I'm not going anywhere, haha."

"You're staying here?" Ichirai asks.

"Until I get an answer from you."

An unsettling silence fills the room for a while, broken when Ichirai speaks. “Then as long as my job is to protect rather than attack, I accept.”

“Very well, then I look forward to fighting alongside you.”

You take a deep breath, this is all a bit much to take in at the same time. An invasion from a foreign threat half a world away. A threat that can uproot even the great Xu Dynasty which has stood from time immemorial. What can a single inept warrior such as yourself do? You’ve never felt so helpless. However...

Enmei clears his throat, catching your attention. “Young warriors, this time of great peace and prosperity is coming to an end. Hone your skills, and when the time comes, I hope you’ll also stand beside this old man in battle.”

Something about his words lights a fire within you - No, it feeds the raging blaze that is already in your heart. “Then as a warrior of the Toumi, I swear to defend my homeland. Following the precepts of Bushido to the end!”

Iga speaks next. “I shall follow my lord wherever he goes.”

“Any barbarian I see will find an arrow in their necks.” Tadatoshi says in his usual flat tone.

“I too-” Shinran says before being cut off by Ichirai. “No. You and the other monks are staying in the temple. This is final.”

“I- But-” Shinran pauses reluctantly. “Understood...”

Enmei stands up. “Good, then it’s settled! I’ll be taking my leave now.”

Ichirai grunts. “Allow us to see you off.”

The sun hangs high in the sky, radiating a comfortable warmth as all of you walk to the temple gates. Ichirai and Enmei say a few more words before the latter takes a few steps beyond the gate and stops. “Nobuyasu!” Enmei calls. “One day you’ll be a great swordsman, I’m sure of it. Until then, train hard!”

Again, the flame within grows ever brighter, illuminating the long path ahead...

This will be the end of thread 2 folks! A bit of an abrupt end, I know, but I feel like it'll be appropriate to end the thread here. I've been feeling a little burnt out for the past few days and will be taking the next 2 weeks off to rest and plan. Thread 3 will be up around the 9th of May if all goes well!

Thank you all of you for playing so far!

In the meantime, I made a discord, so updates and announcements will be posted there in addition to Twitter and the thread here (if it's still up.). Come in and have a chat :D
