Jonathan's Past: Ex-governor of Devtzshik
+1 Diplomacy [Current : 1 (Clueless) ]
+2 Wealth [Current: 2 (Passing by) ]

How long has it been? The years fly by as you grow older. You still recall your glory days back when you turned a little coastal town into a industrial jewel churning out all manner of supplies and equipment for the boys on the frontlines. You have made Devtzshik a strategic target....

...and you paid for it, dearly.

When it comes to manpowers, the Easterners are in no short supplies; they got slaves AND each of their arcane-fueled solider could die *three* times! It was madness to defend your town from wave after wave of soldiers hellbent on conquering your little paradise.

How long was it? Three Months? Four? It didn't matter, Devtzshik had fallen. You lost so many friends in their merciless assault. The men of the east tortured you in hopes of revealing some crucial information seeing that your town has many supply lines branching out of it but you kept your lips sealed.

Your back is only the remnant of such dire times, you endured long enough for the valiant soldiers of the Northern Union to liberate the town.... or what is left of it. The easterners sure love to taint the land with their vile arcane scorching all that is green and civil in their advances.

Yes, The Eastern Wing Countries were something fierce...too stubborn to end the 452 year old world war. You could say the same for the Northern Union except your homeland relied on steam and steel instead of mystic fires and other malicious forms of arcane. A war of ideology and believes.

It was a stalemate of blood and misery. The citizens from both sides grew weary of this tireless generations-old squabble, All of this bloodshed had ended when a virgin land was revealed behind a curtain of scathing wind. Uncharted, unexplored and ripe for the taking. A happy accident to be sure. The two superpowers decided to seek an uneasy truce for they were spent on resources. The rest of the known world was evenly split between the two.

The mighty vessels of Northern Union has managed to cross the dreadful seas of the south while the Eastern wings has utilized their divination and other arcane means to best the winds capable of shredding any ship to naught in a single night. Thus the city of Arkuland was founded just roughly four years ago.

Here is when you come in, it was agreed upon to have someone who doesn't crack under pressure leading the city against the hostile natives of this land. The governor selected before you has died a few weeks ago, It was the Northern Union's turn. Your years as a well=seasoned governor had earned you this very spot in the new world.

+3 Unity [Current: 3 (United) ]
Family (Wife): Margret Thornwall
+Death do us apart

A Clockwork miniature boat. After all these years, your dear Margret still remembers...

She nursed you back to health after the liberation of your town. Oh how long did she stay by your side anticipating your howls of pain from your sore throat, Changing your bandages every couple of hours with nary a squirm...even you couldn't look at what they have done to you. Marrying her was the right thing to do, no, it was a moral obligation after displaying such kindness and love not to the brave governor of Devtzshik but rather to a broken Jonathan Well, a husk of man who became devoid of life , almost suicidal after surviving the ordeal.

You grew old together, this marriage has eighty years or so before it ends on a sad note. Oh yes, the sons and daughters of the Northern Union are blessed with longer lifespans. You gawk at the easterners who could barely pass the eighty year mark before crumbling into dust, such is the will of their twin gods. The great monarchs of your homeland could live up to three hundred years provided that they will survive potential assassination attempts.

The smell of a well-done breakfast is already drawing you out of the bed. Choosing which suit to wear was always a dilemma to you, the grey suit will do. Its rather pallid design beats the flashy colours of eastern 'suits' if you like to call them that. They were easy targets during the early days of the great war but they had wizened up ever since opting for subtly instead. A shame, that.

"Your breakfast is getting cold ,dear."

" I am coming!" Grey suit, Ivory cane, polished black shoes and a hat to top it off...You got ready in a manner of minutes. Odd, You had to tighten your belt a bit more; someone is losing weight alright. Not a surprise, really for a man in your age.

You still haven't decided whether to stay here or to live in the Governor's manor. Your wife does like the coziness of this place, you could already feel her special touch all around you. As for you, you are mostly indifferent though the manor would be more practical for you and your future duties. It will be too spacious for you three , decisions, decisions...

A Special Someone was waiting for you at the dining table.

"Jonathan."

"Martin." he grew more distant after serving under the union's banner. From fighting in the trenches as foot soldier to a commanding nearly a thousand men to venture into the unknown, your son became a bitter, cynical man. There is no joy left in his eyes, only the pulsating desire to further the advances of the union. He'll have plenty of natives to slaughter around here...unless you had different plans for the natives.

It saddens you to see your boy so cruel like so , he is always dry with you and Margret as if you are his sworn enemies. Still, He won't shy away if you sought his advice, he is just like his grandfather. You could only pray that Martin won't meet the same gruesome fate as Sir Wells...

It always felt awkward with you three sitting in one table. You are the one to start up the conversation only to get a monotonous reply from his side.

"How's the city treating you , son?"

"A decent beacon for civilization. Too muddy for my taste." You knew what he truly meant. He carries your hatred of the easterners in his black heart for different reasons. You were only dipped once in the blight of the easterners while your son had mired in it for years and years losing an eye for his country.

The breakfast was your traditional Northern one: three slices of bread , a scrambled egg with a pinch of rust pepper and finally a nice warm cup tea with a spoonful of blue tear sugar. Your dearest knew it was your favorite, she rarely prepares something else unless it is a special occasion.

"Another city in need of the union's finest. Working with the Easterners...never thought I would see the day." He readjusted his eye patch before taking another bite. The brilliant minds of the north had fashioned various steam-cored prosthetics but Martin is too puritan for them. He wears his disfigurement with pride like medal.

"Thank you for the meal, Margret. My leave, I take." Oh many times did he spout these same words, no hint of love or passion. He might as well be addressing his superiors with this tone. You could only sigh as he left the house, slamming the door on the way out.

" He'll come around eventually , dear..." Your wife tried to comfort you, her soft words failed to dispel the grim reality eating you from inside.

"..." You swallowed your words , you won't ruin your morning with more painful reminders and memories. Enough is enough.

It was time to assume your new duties, You kissed Margret before heading out , almost forgetting your hat on the table.

__________________________

The city is devoid of any wildlife, the rather recent churning pollution had driven them away deep into untamed lands leaving you with pillars of black smoke obscuring the very sun. So much of the continent remains a mystery thanks to the hostile natives and the blasted nature itself conspiring against all.

A fit of cough had possessed you, your senile lungs aren't used to such blackness in the air. What sort of surprises will your new seat of power have for you? You can visualize it already in your mind; bloated hogs from both sides squealing for something to sign, something to legislate. They will crawl all over you like ants over a lion, tiny jaws ready to nibble you bit by bit.

Outside, You found two squads , two automobiles, a half-track and a bloody spider tank waiting for you. A mean, grizzled bunch were on full alert, their watchful eyes were tracking anything that moved.. They were armed to the teeth with both light and heavy weapons. All of them sprang from their position to salute you.

"Good Morning, Governor." A bald man approached you, he had a chiseled jaw and ripped body which could snap you in half. This is the sort of company your son would love.

"I am Gustav Tordeson of the Silver Guard. Me and my men are your security detail, we go whenever you go."

Silver guard? Figures, They mostly kept their hand clean during the great war. Your didn't have the elite squadron back in your town; they were meant for those with deep pockets or monarchs. With few exceptions, The Eastern Wing didn't (couldn't) assassinate high profile targets guarded by them. You are now too valuable for the union it seems. Indeed; should you die in one unfortunate accident or another, the Eastern Wing would have a governor of their own leading Arkuland for three full years.

2/3
>>
The Silver guards weren't here yesterday. They had tracked you down after you had ditched the trip provided by the Union in favor a better alternative away from the pen-beaked vultures. One thing you hate with passion is the swarm of press stalking every step of yours. No escape, I it seems.

"Off to the Core Tower, Governor?" Gustav politely asked. He was timid, as it is his job to lick your boots and to love every second of it. You take no joy in this.

"This steaming bloke?" You raised your cane to the tallest structure in the city. It's not just a government building, it's the main powerhouse of Arkuland. It took a full year for the first core ship to disassemble, must've been one hell of a sight. The savages probably shook in their loincloth before the majestic brilliance.

"She's keeping us alive in this green hell." The humidity is already killing you.

" Oh, To be sure." You opened your pocket watch, a full hour left, excellent. "Shall we?" One of the silver guards opened the door for the automobile for you. The rest were manning your steel parade in a flash.

>" I don't fancy clogging the traffic with a bloody tank. We are moving without her." [ +2 Security , +1 Corruption. ]
While the spider tank is an agile thing made for all terrains, it has no place among the populace. You are not some cowardly dictator. The half-track ,on the other hand, can stay.

> "Just the bloody mobile you buffoons." [ +1 Security, +1 Easterners, +1 Northerners, +1 Territorians ]
You prefer a low profile for the time being.

>"Take the fastest route if you please. I despise getting late." [ +3 Security , +2 Corruption ]
A Steel parade it is. You will finally see the mechanical wonders of the spider tank up close.
Trait : Silver Guarded [ You are accompanied by a small army wherever you go protecting you against all manners of conventional weaponry and some arcane tricks , Any would-be assassin will think twice before twisting that knife in your back]

What a sight to behold, so nimble yet deadly and extremely versatile capable of mounting several attachments. This one in particular had a pale disruptor , your Martin chewed your ears about this latest invention. It is a rod-like structure emitting invisible and harmless waves to the average northerner. However, it will sear the flesh of any easterner with high arcane affinity. Any mystic projectile will likely miss as well , it is not foul-proof but it should protect you well.

As for your automobile, It was not made out of paper; She could eat some bullets and perhaps some light arcane tricks. The steel parade marched onward towards the steam spire. Your wall of flesh and steel performed their duties adequately making way for your automobile. You can not afford to be late after all.

The spot your wife chose was still under development. Not everything is prebuilt in district/core walking ships, Foundations are still being erected all around you. Both Eastern and Northern. This clash of culture was mostly apparent in the architecture around you.

The automobile was graciously equipped with all manners of luxuries, overly furnished that one with a gramophone for your leisure.

Public Occurrences and The Daily Khashrama were the main newspapers in Arkuland, you had two neatly folded ones for you to read. You wouldn't bother with the Eastern one for obvious reasons, Public Occurrences it is.

"What are you up to in my city?" you muttered, squinting slightly as you began to read the headlines. They were mostly hogwash as expected though there are some nuggets of news here and there.

'Miners Strike! Deznetien Miners demands more pay, more safety regulations!'

'Legalize Slave owning for Northerners? Up to debate or...?'

' 83rd Expeditionary Battalion: WIPED OUT'

' New Drug preying on our youth: Beware the Devil's Sigh!'

You already regret opening the ink gates of hell. One problem at a time. You took a look at the great chains of industry surrounding you There are few artistic liberties in the buildings around you. All of them had a single purpose: Progress.

The tower beckons closer, with it, a crowd of people are congregating around the entrance barely kept in check by many law enforcers. Mostly Northerners with signs calling for more regulation to the slave trade. Perhaps their hopes are reignited with one of their own on the seat of power.

Rabble-Rousing journalists were there too, each one has a barrage of questions at the tip of their tongue. The Automobile was slowing down, Gustav's men were already making a way for you to safely enter the core tower.

'What do you think of the previous Governor?'

'Governor,Governor! What do you have to say for the war crimes and other atrocities committed against the native? '

'Governor Jonathan, Are you going to address the problematic slavery pact? They are being harvested and culled like some livestock under our very own eyes!'

' Governor, Governor! We need more law enforcers in the streets!'

Livestock? Culled? You are not fully aware of *what* the easterners are doing to the natives. It was perhaps foolish of you to ignore the briefing about the current state of affairs on the way here. It is very important not to badmouth the Eastern Wing , not on your very first day at least.

To satisfy the thirst of the press

"Thank you for all coming here. I will answer some questions in brief. I did not personally know the previous Governor, but from what I can see so far, he was a man who ran his position well and I hope to live up to any expectations the previous Governor no doubt left to me to fulfill. My position was selected by the most qualified individuals the Northern Union has to offer. They saw in me a man capable of leading and being a fit, proper governor. I will not let them, nor any of the people here down. There will be more law and order in the streets. My stance on slavery is one of zero tolerance. Thank you for your time, please address any further questions in writing to my office and I will happy to respond when I am more settled in."

-1 Career [Current : -1 (Under Investigation)

You earned puzzled looks and even few smirks from the slithering journalists , what did you say to invoke such reaction? Was it your verbal lash against slavery?

Your security detail deflected any further questions and rushed you towards the entrance, a giant double door hissing as it opened its maws for you. It was sealed shut the moment after. Silence, graceful one. You sighed out of relief, nothing will satisfy these mongrels.

The Lobby had a floor of marble and granite. Spacious and Majestic with a giant clock made of brass above the receptionist. Everyone walking and talking about stopped as you took your first steps inside. Only Gustav was to follow, the rest has dispersed to give you some breathing room.

"Quite a bold statement, kind sir. Didn't know that Governor Ayyah was a man in guise." A tanned man in a plain suit, couple of years younger than you, approached with a big cigar lodged between his white-as-pearl teeth. He was a tad shorter than you with a round belly, his cheerful altitude was rather infectious.

Ah, so there is why. They'll bite your heels for such a minuscule mistake, you are sure of it. For now, you shook hands with the man "Jacob Vangree, Your son and his company saved our hide back in Heriisa. We were bombarded with arcane bile for weeks. So many brilliant minds lost, what a shame."

" Very unfortunate indeed. May their souls rest easy with the Lord." It was a massacre and an incentive for the union to accelerate their chemical warfare advancements. The union was always spread thin in the last few decades of the great war. Many towns were crushed under the eastern tide due to this simply weakness.

Jacob chuckled " Good times, Now look at me, from having molded bread and a skewered rat for dinner to overseeing this beauty as a Grand Coremaster. It is quite an upgrade if i dare say so myself. Is the city to your liking, Governor ?"

" Its Eastern-Northern amalgamation is something to behold. Never to be seen back home." Only the brightest minds of the union would dream of such position. The Core is a finicky thing to maintain, furthermore, A Grand Coremaster is often associated with the internal affairs of the ruling body itself. While he is not on the top of chain command, his role is as important as yours.

"I wouldn't just allow any rascal to be the first to welcome you, come, your office awaits."

Naturally, the very last floor was only reserved for you. You could not fathom climbing all of these stairs. This elevator was a bliss. Your office was as over the top, perhaps too much for your taste. The pile of documents waiting for you was rather foreboding.

"Here we are, before i would let you meet your cabinet , you must choose a secretary. I personally picked three candidates for you. Do keep in mind that your choice will affect your public image. It is up to you to decide."

The Coremaster handled you three files, one for each secretary.

>Ludwig Vionkreg [ +1 Intrigue, +1 Northerner , -1 Easterners, -1 Territorians, -2 Career upon getting exposed ]
A young man in his twenties, excels in your typical paper work and espionage. His delicate position will allow him to counter any potential spies while utilizing his cover. To the public, he is another Northerner in a position of relative power. This will make the union happy but will upset the Eastern Wing. Furthermore, should his true identity be relieved for one reason or another, there will be heavy consequences in the future.
Trait: Counterespionage [Your position will be greatly protected for any eastern seeking to siphon information or ruining your career.

>Esteilla Gabriel [ +1 Diplomacy, +1 Territorians , -2 Easterners, -2 Northerners ]
A woman in her thirties from one of the countries swallowed by imperialism. This will greatly bolster your image among the few minority groups (Non Easterners/Northerners) but may have a negative impact elsewhere.

>Ameriah Adeel [ +1 Strategy, +1 Easterners , -1 Northerners, -1 Territorians, ]
A beautiful woman in her early twenties from the Eastern Wing Countries. Naturally, this will make more favorable among the eastern population but may upset the union. There is a possibility that she may be another spy herself despite the countless background checks which could be problematic.
Trait : Native Interpreter [Your secretary is one of the few people who could understand the bizarre native language to some extent.

Wait, how were we (the players) to know that Ayyah was female? That seems odd to ding us for, unless it was mentioned earlier and I completely missed it.

We're going to have to have a regular running recount of where we are stats wise if everything affects it. Could reach a fail state VERY quickly in this type of game, it seems.

PRESUMING we're neutral on all fronts at the moment (and if not I request the QM to let us know) then:

We need to at least give them a bit of faith. If she's a spy, there's ways we can handle it that don't require an OG spook to deal with.

" Quite Bold of you, governor. You are not trying to have some 'night activities' behind the missus, eh?"

"Heavens, no!" You took his joke rather seriously almost getting offended by it.

"Alright, alright. I'll call your new desert lily right away." The man had gently closed the door behind him leaving you to your thoughts.

They drifted towards the territorians and their plight. When the great war was over, the two great powers have agreed to split the rest of world between them, mainly the western continent and the southern isles who were neutral/independent . A diplomatic capitulation was offered to these countries. Some agreed to such terms while others sought to protect their sovereignty which of course was not an option. They were subjugated in a matter of months.

The Northern territories do enjoy some sort of autonomy at the expense of heavy taxation for their privileges. The Eastern territories is another story; a mumble jumble of chaos, freedom and oppression. You have heard various conflicting opinions on the eastern regime. Needless to say, the territorians despise both sides for their atrocities but they are too weak to actually do something about it.

"Byhlaam, Governor." The younger easterner had finally arrived with the Coremaster, greeting you with utmost respect. She wore semi-traditional eastern attire adjusted for the hellish tropical weather of the new world, it was modest showing as little skin as possible. The men of the dunes are almost possessed with their garments; it acts like some sort of a code...is that easterner married? did they lose someone dear to them? are they expecting a promotion? In fact, it is a criminal offense to wear certain clothes if one is not 'qualified' for it. Madness. Sadly for you, you got zero experience in that matter.

" I am more than glad to be chosen to assist you in your day to day duties. The Twins are my witnesses, Aylaaki La'anan Kefsi." This is some kind of a sacred Oath. You are sure of it.

"That's the spirit! Like it or not, the whole city is counting on you so better get to it!" as he was about to leave the office, he had another thing to say " If you need anything, send someone to my department at the 9th floor."

"I'll keep this in mind. Have a good one" It was nine o'clock by then, time does fly so fast already.

"Would you like something to drink, Governor? " She asked, politely.

"I'll have none. Let's get straight to work. What do we have here?" You tapped on the pile of document presumably waiting for you.

"These are some paperwork you will need to sign to finalize the transition process. " She began to sort them out for you " While these are various reports on the current state of affair of our noble city."

"Your advisors, the Sword -Law and Prime Legislator among others are waiting for you, Governor. It is very rare to seem them together like so." Schisms between the North and the East , thoughts and ideals fighting over the reins of Arkuland. instead of Bullets and bolts of fire, the war wages on with words sharper than a bayonet on this front.

+2 Career [ Current : 1 (Thriving) ]

And thus began your crusade against the fiendish documents. First up, you signed them papers first. They were more of the same really: Governor Ayyah's reign of aggressive expansion had ended after her final death leaving you to clear up the mess...and what a mess it was. The heavy hitters are patiently waiting for you in the well-compiled report.

While she did oversee the very foundation of Arkuland, your predecessor had royally botched up the first contact with the natives. You would whether all of the current bloodshed could be avoid or not; after all, The Union and the Wing did settle in their lands to steal their resources.

As for your main duties as a governor, to enact, reappeal or to revoke the laws passed by the two most important individuals beneath you: [b] The Prime Legislator and The Sword-Law [/b[ . The dyad are the head of Lawmakers/supervisors , acting as the mouths of the Union and the Wing. More drastic laws requires the approval of all three parties (and/or some of the representatives should it come to that.) . It is true that you have great authority but your power is not absolute.

The idea of having a neutral governor from any of the territories was a proposition in the earlier days of Arkuland that was quickly discarded in fear of an unwanted rise in power or anything of the same caliber. Each great power would rather trust an enemy they know too well than to resort to a wild card.

The last paper you signed was your legal obligation towards this bizarre 'Dual-Law' .
To put it in simpler terms: every single law has two variations (unless both the Northern and the Eastern iterations were in harmony with each other) . Often times, this duality will conflict with itself causing unwanted friction that is rarely solved by itself. It is up to you to choose which version is more applicable in the new world.

After signing the last document, you darted over the reports. That is a lot to ingest, you ought to take it slowly.

You began with the most dreadful of them all: The Quota. The great powers have split the exploited resources equally with two notable exceptions. The North had exclusive rights over Nythriem , the wonder 'living metal' which is rapidly accelerating the steam-cored industry. The East had over, immoral plans...

They want the natives themselves.

The report stated that the natives possessed some sort of primal arcane powers, unseen by any Eastern Scholar. Their powers are described as ' direct manipulation over both flora and fauna supplemented by the caster's sanguine arts.' . Blood is an integral part of their primitive culture, they have developed retractable fangs capable of draining an adult male in a matter of minutes to sustain themselves or should their arcane fails them against bullets and eastern arcane,

That is not all, sadly. The Easterners call them 'Beduntyfl' or the childless ones. Under a lot of stress , a native child could reach adulthood in an exponential rate provided he or she had ample supply of blood at hand. One month of accelerated growth equals to nearly two years!

You almost tore the report upon reading what are the Wing doing with them, the most obvious answer is more slaves. They fetch quite a price due to their exotic nature, more so if their arcane has been snuffed out. The more nefarious use for them is horrid arcane experimentation like those done with any sandblood crossbreed. Furthermore, those who went through torture to achieve this unnatural accelerated growth go straight to the grinder; their flesh and bones are so saturated with arcane powers that they make a fine Haashabani Elixir which empowers arcane users without any possible addiction.

Monsters...Butchers...how could the Northerner union accepts such demands??? Your blood is boiling and yet you are as helpless as a newborn. Is there anything you could do to end their suffering?

Quota Nythriem (1) / Haash Elixir (0)

-5 No Qouta
-4->-3 Underflowing
-2->-1 below demand
0-> Barely meeting demand
1->2 Acceptable rate
3->4 Overflowing
5 Surplus

Quota is the a rough number of shipments for the north and the east. it is calculated at the end of every month. Expect the great powers to ask for more.

Naturally, the natives had responded to the recent kidnappings and relocations with raids and ambushes. They got the numerical advantages but they are not unified under one banner. Indeed, there are dozens of clans scattered about, the expeditions had only contacted some but not all of them.

Retaliation (3)

-5 New World Allies/ Wiped out
-4->-3 Making amends/ Hunted down
-2->-1 Further negotiations/ Barely a threat
0-> Made peace
1->2 Ambushes
3->4 Opportunistic Raids
5 Full scale war

Retaliation determines the current ferocity and aggressiveness of the natives. With enough men and firepower, you could end their menace once and for all or you could improve your relations with seeking their alliance.

The report encompassed the economical status of both the new world and Arkuland herself, the city of opportunity.

Wealth of Arkuland (4)

0 Barren
1->3 Struggling
4->6 Developing
7->9 Prospering
10 Utopia

The wealth of Arkuland is affecting by many things including recent policies, unrest, corruption and so on. The better it is, the happier your people will be.

Exploitable resources (10)

0 Exhausted
1->3 Near Depletion
4->6 Dwindling
7->9 Bountiful
10 Virtually untouched

It is a rough estimation of what is left of non-exclusive resources in the new world. It will fall rapidly with more aggressive exploitation .

You were surprised to see such dedication to the expeditionary forces from both side in the reports. The great powers are throwing brave men and women into danger for their self intrest. Your Martin and his company will either explore uncharted territory or will be stationed in an outpost protecting a dig site or some such.

Army Strength (6)

0 Militia
1->3 Policing Force
4->6 Expeditionary Battalions
7->9 Standing Army
10 Arkulandian's Pride

The strength of your armed forces, giving your city a chance to survive the native's attacks.

The report had finally ended with the how Arkuland is doing. There are many seeds of turmoil waiting to sprout at the most opportune time. You must deseed them before it is too last.

Unrest (-1)

5 Anarchy
-4 ->-3 On the verge of chaos
-2 -> -1 Protests
0 Status quo
1->2 Calm
3 ->4 Stable
5 Law and Order

Unrest is Arkuland's greatest looming threat. You must keep your city under control no matter the cost.

3/?
>>
Jesus, that's a lot of stats.

Looking at it, I'd disagree at the moment with Unrest being the greatest looming threat. Or rather, it's not the one we should try to handle outright. By dealing with other issues we can deal with the Unrest issue. The most troubling things right now are the issues with the Wing/Easterners? (Is this all/ the majority of Easterners or just a sect? I'd like to know since apparently some folks are playing with prior knowledge.) and their desire for the natives. We need to figure out (if possible) a way to get the Easterners to back off on their barbarism. We could utilize this to get the Natives to listen to us a bit more- classic bargaining of 'we'll get them to back off if you're willing to follow some rules of ours' ala a protectorate or some such. But we still need the Easterners to play ball with us, and we can't do that by just stomping all over what they believe to be their rights (even if they aren't and it's fucking horrid). We'll need to gently push them away from this kinda BS. And for that we'll need to open a preliminary dialogue. Nothing final, just opening talks to indicate 'this is a thing we need to discuss'.

Gonna take some wheeling and dealing, but I think the problem is solvable without everyone going insane.

We need to use a divide and conquer approach - like the Europeans did with West Africans in the 1600s

Find a tribe willing to trade with us and provide them with weapons. We can then trade them material goods for native slaves to pass onto the Easterners

This will reduce native anger directed at us, increase the divisions within their society and let us meet the quota without losing our own troops to slave raids

This is a redux quest anon for the original one back in 2019. I added more depth to it with stats and a few tweaks here and there. I wouldn't recommend reading it so you won't spoil yourself on some parts of it.

We are getting close to the point of divergence though. You got the meeting to introduce our cabinet + 2-3 prompts to finalize the chargen. No more copypasta after that.

Instead of following Jonathan throughout his daily routine, we will have a couple of prompts popping per month ,maybe less actually. I am aiming for a four-year term (provided we didn't get killed/ousted/etc). That's 12x2x4=96 choice on average. Not everything is set in stone just yet.

+3 Ameriah Adeel [Current: 3]

"Come again?" He blinked twice in disbelief.

"My words are clear, Mr. Nakea't. Apologize to this young lady or do easterners lack any courtesy ?"

"Need I remind you who I am, old man?" He narrowed his eyes and gritted his teeth in anger.

"So eager to disobey me, aren't you? I certain our mutual friends would be so pleased after learning about their reckless lawmaker injuring my employees..."

The rage brimming inside his eyes had faded away " Oh, that is how do you want to play? Fine, then." The Sword-Law turned his gaze upon your secretary, muttering something in his mother tongue before storming out of your office.

"He apologized to me, Governor." stated Ms. Adeel.

"Don't let arrogant bastards step on you. If and when he or one of his goons are harassing you, let me know at once, understand?"

"Yes, Governor."

The meeting was set in a large hall in the second floor, it was furnished a long table made from some black tree, probably native to these lands and an assortment of outlandish decorations were pinned and hanged on the wall; Giant skulls of terrible beasts, bioluminescent feathers and an oil painting depicting the core ship making history- A collaboration between the North and the East.

As for the attendees, they were as you would have expected ; Well-Seasoned politicians smiling and shaking hands in front of the tripod cameras, a plethora of guards from both sides. At least the press here is more tame than those outside. You spotted a couple of frowns here and there thanks to your late arrival. The Sword-Law was already drowning in laughter with others... has he already forgot about your recent clash or is this but a facade?

Finally, there was a very special Matrah meditating at the corner of the hall with guards of her own, her porcelain mask was a dead giveaway. She is powerful arcane caster who can negate other arcane usage much like a more powerful pale disruptor. The soldiers of the Union dreaded this banshee in the battlefield; her calm demeanor merely hides the monster within... A single Matrah could wipe out dozens of men in a blink of the eye. Luckily, the Wing seldom deployed them in the field due to their sacred duties as spiritual healers and how precious they are. They had a different sort of femme fatalle at their disposal.

Again, you were the center of attention. The only pleasant eyes around were that of Jacob who was already drinking before the meeting would even start. There was little time to socialize, first , a speech is due.

Your secretary has also made it, She sneaked in some cards for you at the podium. You glanced at her words, It was a rather generic one but serviceable. You stood behind the podium, your advisors were on your right and left. All went silent for your speech.

+1 Nakea't Musel [Currently : 0 (Status: Furious) ]

You took the Sword-Law by surprise, the easterner simply could not refuse such offer practically jumping behind the podium. That sly fox of a man knew nearly everything about your past charming the press with his honeyed words.

Perhaps, it was a blessing is disguise to let him gain all the attention, he was more glad to answer all the questions thrown at you. It was clear that he was 'Northernized' at some point of his life and yet he didn't turn his back on his motherland like many before him. Indeed, many young easterners are so willing to shed their barbaric and backwater skin in favor of a shiny northern one thanks to nearly five hundred years of conflict which had introduced the two relatively secular empires to each other. The Union had exploited these young men to be their expendable little spies especially Sandbloods. Nowadays, each hard working easterner trying a to start a new life in the Union and her territories are faced with extreme prejudice... you have seen it with your very own eyes in Devtzshik.

An easterner shoemaker , his wife and his young daughter... butchered after merely a month of settling in. The women were defiled and the man was castrated, no one was arrested. No investigation, nothing.

Your wandering mind was anchored back to reality as your advisors who delivered a brief speech. First one was your Prime legislator , Arudelle Cenidekt , She had hawkish green eyes and fiery red hair... a blueblood in your cabinet? Very unusual but not unexpected. Her words were sharper than the saber resting on her hip, the woman's loyalty clearly belongs to the Union.

Next up was Eliza Mazzan : Your social advisor. Her sun kissed skin and her sky blue eyes were a dead giveaway; Easterner Father, Northerner Mother.... a Sandblood, born from two worlds and shunned by them both. She must be well informed of both cultures to assume such position. Her words were dry and to the point.

Your Military advisor spoke after her, an elegant boy long white hair. Aukustus Darvin was him name. Probably the son of some fancy general who used his influence to seat his child among grown ups. You hate everything about him, the way he speaks, the way he drowns you with flattery, his woman-like voice and altitude. You have seen women manlier than him in your office. Revolting. Your Sword-Law OR your Prime Legislator could easily assume his duties.

Your economic advisor was an Eastern slug in disguise. This Medehat Kalamah focused on the previous governor and how perfect she was, mourning her as if she is one of the twin divines they worship. Poor bastard's heart is aching to continue his duties under the thumb of a filthy Northerner.

When he was finished, Your arcane/native adviser stepped in. Timid as a mouse with few words, that one. You barely heard her name as spoke almost spoke in whispers. Kemer Kasoof was also a Matrah , she wore her traditional garb which obscured all but her lips and nose. You are not to judge, you have seen worse. Though, you are curious: Where is her porcelain mask?

Finally, Noskk Akaravich had his chance to speak. You know him, the famous inventor who is practically the father of all the Goliath land-walking ships. No doubt he is your technological advisor. That man is walking a fine line between being exceptionally genius and clinically insane : Who in the world would chop their very own limbs to replace them with mechanical counterparts?! He is thrice your age but somehow , he has more vigor than yours truly.

When this was all over, you had a small chance to socialize with either your cabinet or a small group of representatives, They were of different classes and different goal. All of them were yearning to speak with you for the briefest of seconds. Laborers, Immigration, public transportation, artists... their numbers were endless.

Before you, stood a man in his fifties sporting a hefty beard covering most of his neck. You have seen his peculiar hat in the streets of Arkuland more than once. It was very similar to a bowler hat but with rougher edges, almost square-like with a pocket for a small object of sorts. He was neither rich nor poor though he did his best to be presentable.

" Good sir, I am Fonatan Izbern speaking on the behalf of Nardisie and Co, The Brightsons, The Fairtrails M-"

"I am a very busy man, Mr. Fonatan. Please, Be brief." You had to cut him off or he would go on and on.

"Y-yes, sir. " The Northerner wiped the sweat forming on his forehead with a yellow napkin, tucking it in a flash " Our horses are dying sir."

"Horses?"

"Yes, Governor." He nodded " Most of the common folks aren't fortunate enough to operate the steam-powered metal carriages. We brought the beasts from the continent here to make a living but they keep falling ill, wasting away in their sleep. The air here is no good, sir."

" How so?" You already know the answer and yet you feigned ignorance.

"The factories, sir. They never stop churning black smoke. Day and night, Day and night. Poor lads 'round these parts are buying Sir Noskk's Breathing Masks so they can work there proper. Our Northern Tyshkiev breeds can't handle the soot in the air, no one can."

Mr. Fontan took off his hat, holding it in his hands " Governor Ayyah said that we, the people, 'can't stop the progress'. I do not know how their eastern horse-vipers monsters remain healthy while ours succumb to illness. Please, governor, I am begging you from one Northerner to another: Save our noble beasts. Save our livelihood."

" Kyrre Khamwae, your northern steeds have gone too soft under grassy hills of your homeland. Your fault for bringing them here. They'll drop like flies, I tell you." The pot-bellied slug chuckled, almost teasing the poor man next to you.

"I trust you will offer a reasonable solution this problem as soon as possible, Mr. Medehat. Transportation is the backbone of any city."

" Varsha, Varsha, Good Governor. I'll start right away. I'll deduct some appropriate funds from our budget for some surveys and statistics. You know how it goes..."

Yes, small scale projects like these are sinkholes for Metra , the local currency for Arkuland, where money mysteriously disappears. You know his true intentions very well. you have seen your fair share of money-grubbing snakes in Devtzshik. You can't get rid of this problem unless you took drastic actions so for the time being, you will allow the easterner to fatten his belly just a tad more.

Alas, the meeting was done. You finally returned to the loving embrace of your wife after a long, grueling day. Your new burden as the governor of Arkuland shall commence tomorrow.

Hard times ahead...

Dear Governors, We will see through the eyes of Jonathan Wells 1-4 times per month throughout his three-year term. Each Choice will shape Arkuland, no matter how small or trivial it is. Furthermore, Jonathan could experience unique Events . These are special prompts that expires every three months ( Most of them anyways. Bad, Rock bottom ones are hidden and can't expire). Some are a one-off thing while others can drastically alter our story.

As Hinted from earlier, We can only enact three propositions per month. One for Admin, One for Dip and the last one for Mil. Time to get to work, Governors!

The rain, the damn rain... It never stops. The city was not ready for a downpour of that caliber. It showed how vulnerable the infrastructure actually was. Governor Ayyah overlooked the needs of her people, she was enthralled by the great chains of industry casting these shackles on your city. The only good thing coming out of the rain was the streets; they are devoid of any pesky protesters. Their voices will be heard but not through these means.

Your were behest by mundane tasks in your office today. Thankfully, your secretary is doing what she can to ease your burden. That easterner is sure something.

Come afternoon, You returned to your humble home only to find some of the Silver guard stationed there (for your wife's safety) bickering with a group of individuals you wished you had never dealt with.

The Crimson Dirge , Aharmair.

An elite group of nimble warriors. Dancers in the battlefield who utilize illusionary arcane to swiftly advance among ranks shrugging off conventional firearms as if it was nothing. They are not as devastating the Matrahs but These dangerous group of women can turn the scales of many battlefields. Their bloodlust is immeasurable , they simply do not kill their mark right away, they revel into their fine arts of mutilation which makes them also seasoned torturers. It was their ilk who flayed the skin of your back, who sank smoldering iron in your flesh.

Your past wounds were opened, you recoiled in what you assume to be fear. The beatings of your heart grew stronger and faster, urging you to run, flee from these sadistic fiends.

"What's going on here? Explain yourself!" Gustav was clearly pissed from their mere presence. He was completely ignored, the leader of Aharmair chose to speak to you only "Envoy of the North, Governor of Arkuland, I am Roza Shabaat. We were chosen by Sword-Law Nakea't Musel to personally guard you , your household and your other interests...your 'men' are too fragile to accept our arrival. We trust your judgement."

This is unheard of, the crimson dirge was never meant to be on guard duty. What did the Sword-Law mean by this? Unless, he did it out of spite. Yes, this is the only logical explanation. He is putting you between a rock and a hard place; should you refuse this company of deranged women, you are insulting him further. Furthermore, your swelling number of personal guards is too much! It will clog the streets and will surely give the wrong sort of expression to the good people of this city. You are no tyrant living in fear from his future assassin.

You took a deep sigh, even when you are mere steps from comfort, You are confronted with another problem. Curses.

It's not that I don't trust their professionalism or think they are plants meant to have a knife to our throat at any time so much as we don't need the security, the bad press from the fear they will inspire, the hassle of moving people out of the way of our by now fucking huge protection detail, or the PTSD flashbacks that may or may not occur by having these hellions around. It's a shame, the compromise option is really good. Alas, we are not that specialized.

I'd also rather not spike our corruption and rely on the possibility of getting options to reduce it later at significant cost, instead I'd rather not get it or gain it slowly so as not to cause some sort of crisis with needing a lot of money to clear out corruption or making a self-fulfilling prophecy where by making lots of corruption we somehow make it so things get dangerous for us therefore requiring us to have more security, thereby causing a death spiral.

That and fuck these bitches, I'd rather have Northern guards we know we can trust rather than guards from another polity which would normally be opposed to us if we weren't the governor of this particular uniquely situated city.

She was momentarily stunned , her kind does not take no for an answer " The word of the Sword-Law is absolute. Do not fool yourself, the illusion of safety will be shattered without the agents of the pale!"

"We'll see about that, Witch." Gustav smirked while resting his hand on the hilt of his saber. In a blink, all of the silver guard were ready for a fight with the spider tank hissing for action.

" The Sword-Law will learn of this incident." Roza and her posse turned their backs on you leaving the scene in defeat. Even they couldn't be the first to draw their swords. The repercussions would be devastating for both sides.

" Well said, Governor. We best not to forget our true enemies." stated your Silver Guard.

"It is in our best intrest not to disturb the peace." The man nodded in silence, he is truly like your Martin. Though reluctant at first, you have invited him over supper. The Arkulandian spotted Grouper was quite a meal, its mild yet distinct flavor was quite welcoming. He had expressed his intrest in fishing as well, someday, you might take him on one of your fishing trips... you are yet to see what does the ocean of the new world has to offer.

A week later, you economic advisor was finished with the survey. He discussed the matter with both the Sword-Law and the Prime Legislator following the dual law. Ms. Adeel has readied the proposition for you alongside a nice cup of tea and a colourful territorian snack. What did they put in their dough to make it so sweet?

ADMIN Proposition T-12 : Working Animals Well-Being Initiative

There are several means of transportation in Arkuland:

-Cart/ Carriages [Northern Companies] : 37% of Arkuland transportation capacities . They only use the Northern Tyshkiev due to its endurance and bravery (There are 14 reported incident of Tyshkievian horses heavily injuring or outright killing predators/natives ).

-Cart/Carriages [Eastern Companies] :45% of Arkuland transportation capacities, They use The Kaharan Coutazuul or The Vipered Horse , a medium sized beast of burden who is also milked for their poison. They are extremely hot tempered capable of singlehandedly protecting carriages and caravans from the wild life or the natives though they do require a copious amount of meat.

-Automobiles : 13 % of Arkuland transportation capacities. These Steam-powered carriages does not require any working animal to operate, there only reserved for the upper echelon of our society.

-Pale-Warping: 5% of Arkuland transportation capacities. The Pale is the supposed plane of existence housing the easterners' twin divines which is the source of all of their arcane tricks. The Gyrassah or The Bell Maidens are special arcane caster who could create a small breach in the pale, enough for a single woman (Yes, women only) to pass through from one point to another. This Pale-Warping has a lot of potential but it also had its myriad of restrictions [Two bell maidens required, short distance warping, may only wrap ~5 times a day, only easterner women with some arcane capabilities could pale-warp...etc] making it impractical for public use.

-Steamrail [Project is currently suspended] : Originally, Governor Ayyah had planned for railroad connecting Arkuland to several important sites but the overly ambitious project was shelved after the Wild Reach disaster.

The Carriage business is pretty straight forward; Easterners prefer easterner-owned companies and vice versa. Territorians do prefer Northern companies more though.

Throughout these three years, The Northern companies had registered 742 able horse ( most of them were imported, few are born and raised here ). There are 321 reported death with more than 60% of that number reported this year only.

Recent autopsies (6 on stallions, 2 on mares ) confirms the presence of pulmonary pathology of unknown cause. Their lungs had a black-greenish taint combined with unidentified bony lumps deep within the organ. Further research is needed.

As for the factories, they were rapidly constructed as part of Governor's Ayyah vision to make Arkuland self-sufficient , relying as little as possible on imported goods. 15 Factories were constructed in the vicinity, 4 of which have been upgraded with Steam relays which connects them to the Core Tower while the remaining 11 rely on either coal or Eyewood : a peculiar yet cheaper alternative to coal . Eyewood is a native tree with hypnotic capabilities luring unsuspected preys to its 'fertilizer beds' . They are revered by the native population who often place some of their dead in these beds.

All the factories are working around the clock for maximum efficiency. The most polluting of all factories belong to Arenus Industries which is responsible for nearly all of our military manufacturing AND Nythriem refining. Most of the reported death had occurred to horses operating within that area.

As for our populace, the numbers of reported lung diseases and deaths related to it has been within acceptable range, only 25 Deaths and 532 Cases....excluding coal miners and any Arkulandian working at or near the green frontier.

Now, there are several way to tackle this problem. In no particular order, they are:

- Reduce Working Hours : The problem won't go away but it won't be as severe as before. However, you are opening another set of floodgates with this solution: Our productivity will decrease including our monthly quota. The owners of the great chain will have to adjust wages and salaries accordingly. Some workers may appreciate this cut but others won't be thrilled with lesser Metra in their wallets.

- Upgrade the factories : This is a gargantuan project offering a cleaner alternative substantially decreasing our Eyewood and coal consumption. Yet, it won't happen within a day and a night. How are the workers going to feed their families with their livelihoods are out of commission for roughly three months? You will poke the beehive quite bad. Unless you are willing to compensate the working man, expect a lot of unrest. Also, 5 of our eastern-constructed factories are not compatible with steam technology. Finally, you will be putting a lot of work load on the tower. Any slight malfunction could be catastrophic.

- Import better breeds : The old world has a plethora of horses and other beasts of burden for every occasion. We should import working animals who are more resistant to diseases and can withstand the heat and the humidity of the new world. The less skittish they are, the better. This trade deal will leave a small dent in our budget unless we chose not to subsidize the failing Northern Companies.

- Force-Merge the Northern and Eastern companies : It is clear that the Kaharan Coutazuul is superior to its northern counterpart. As such, it should be our be the only animal hauling and fending our carriages. The weak horses will be butchered, offered as food for the Vipered Horses. It will take time for the northern companies to readjust under new managements but it is a far better alternative than losing their jobs.

>The most polluting of all factories belong to Arenus Industries which is responsible for nearly all of our military manufacturing AND Nythriem refining. Most of the reported death had occurred to horses operating within that area.

Given this fact, I don’t think the standard factory pollution is the problem.

I’m guessing the problem is linked to specific chemicals released during the Nythriem refining process.

We should have the genius inventor guy look into this situation. Hopefully we can increase efficiency while also reducing pollution / chemical runoff.

In the short-term though, we should do this:
>- Import better breeds : The old world has a plethora of horses and other beasts of burden for every occasion. We should import working animals who are more resistant to diseases and can withstand the heat and the humidity of the new world. The less skittish they are, the better. Supporting.

That being said, I do prefer the long term solution of upgrading the factories, not even for the native bonus, but just for a greener solution that will need to be done in the future anyways. However, I'd rather not cause a budget death spiral where we need to upgrade the glitching core tower in response to solving this. That or just getting better horses sounds like an easy solution that improves our diplomacy.
>>
>>4778044
>Upgrade the factories WITHOUT compensation
The starred options are probably the best since we get reduced downsides with the sweet bonuses. Workers Strike and especially Rustled Chains seem like nightmares to deal with, so I think this is probably the best option. Importing better breeds is also a tempting option (without subsides, the +2 to Northerners isn't going to be worth the -1 wealth imo) but I think the environmental upgrade could have some cool bonuses gated behind it

A short-term solution should suffice for the time being. Uprooting the industry could be disastrous for your fragile city. You prefer to take it one step at a time.

By signing this proposition, you have saved the struggling companies. Though they are but a speck in the great scheme of things, simple men like Mr. Fonatan will remember you standing by their side in their time of need.

A Night to remember

You began to spend less and less time in your home thanks to your never-ending work. Margret understands your burden while Martin is indifferent. The silence of your office is rarely broken by your secretary or the occasional visitor.

One of which was Ms. Mazzan, knocking on your door shortly before the sun began to set.

"To what do I owe the pleasure?" You spoke with her a couple of times before, the woman puts her cunning into good use. She is the voice of the people afterall.

"How can you call yourself a governor of Arkuland without walking in her streets? What do you know of her sprawling districts? Her pain and ecstasy ?"

" Not much, I am afraid. My cage does not have bars but it is still a cage." Your referred to your paperwork and position in general. My oh my, she didn't mince words at all.

"Then, I say: set yourself free. Let go you of your woes for the night... or is a late night stroll too much to ask ? We need not the company of your silver guard."

What goes in the mind of that woman? You are not so sure. Going anywhere without your small army feels somehow wrong; what if an assassin is waiting for you? So far, you haven't wronged anyone within this fair city. You are perplexed by her offer.

"So be it." The Sandblood wasn't too pleased with it but these are your terms.

Arkuland was a whole different beast under the cover of the night. People around you were puzzled at your presence. Your menacing escort had cleared the way as usual , especially with your spider tank following your automobile.

"Patience, Governor." She did whisper your destination to the driver earlier "Behold, the legacy of Ayyah..."

Pretty lights, sprawling structures with more on the rise... you are familiar with some of these streets. It is a wondrous sight indeed. Your admiration of your predecessor began to fade away the further you strayed afar from your usual routes. The disparity between the rich and the poor was sickening. Rundown buildings, makeshift shacks, potholes in the streets as big as your automobile with beggars, vagabonds and cripples huddled together like rats. You remained silent, watching more of the same " Tell me, What do you think these men and women will do when they see their governor without all of that muscle? Will they shake your hands or twist their knives deep in your gut?"

"This is not my fault. Governor Ayyah didn't meet their demands." You hate this blaming game already."

" Fair enough, You do still owe me a nightly stroll, Governor. There are many places I can show you without your entourage. " She winked playfully before exiting the automobile . You do admire her fiery soul. She reminded you of your wife in her youth. That woman could move mountains with her grit and determination.

Once everything was said and done, you returned back to your home. Another day properly wrapped up.

A matter of Metra

By the end of the month, you had little vigor and endurance left in your old bones. It is not like your workload will ever decrease, it only goes up . The great storm in the horizon had finally whittled down, Arkuland is no longer isolated from the civilized world.

A sizable number of engineers were running left and right as you entered the Core Tower. Jacob was barking commands at everyone with a swaying bottle in his right hand.

"Governor!" His face arched a smile at you " The Good ol' core had quite a hiccup last hour. Don't Worry! I have it under control."

"What happened?"

"One of our auxiliary cooling pumps got over-pressurized, A nightmare in the lower levels. It wouldn't have been a problem two years ago but ever since Ayyah went on her expansion spree, she demanded more and more power ." Another engineer almost bumped into the Coremaster, She stopped for a second to catch her breath as she submitted a report to him.

"Great news!" He gave her the rest of his bottle "Everything had been stabilized thanks to Northern ingenuity and some *hic* elbow grease. Time will go backwards before the dune lads get to know how our little wonders ticks."

You couldn't imagine the power required to run the whole city. It must be an unbearable task to maintain everything to avoid potential disasters "By the by, I don't believe you have taken your salary, no?"

"I haven't." You shook your head, every single Metra you had spent so far was from your own.

"Then what are you waiting for, you old goose? Go to the 5th floor. A new month is nearly upon us!" He gave you a pat on the shoulder before attending to other engineers. Might as well.

You didn't know the core tower had a bank . 'The Pale Cog' was its name, it had rules of its own , slowly becoming Arkuland's most favorite bank thanks to its flexible approach. There a lot of people who could use a loan or two here after all...

You were to meet a northerner by the name of Sygheird Maverchykt after wading through a maze of offices. He had just finished business with one happy customer.

"Please, have a seat." It was nice not to hear Governor or Sir for once. He was treating you like any customer. No special treatment.

"I would like you to sign here , here and here..." It was your regular terms and conditions, nothing too strange. Why didn't your secretary bring them to you in your first day? This feels like a waste of tim-

By laws of Arkuland, you were only allowed to earn 5000 Metra . A laughable salary even by your standards. You used to earn THRICE that number as the governor of Devtzshik without any hint of corruption. However, there were many unchecked bonuses in the file he presented it to you. Most of them didn't make any sense which begs the question: How much did Governor Ayyah earn per month?

Disability bonus? Your back is indeed mutilated but it doesn't hinder your duties. Twin's Relief? You are not even an easterner!! This one states you are an expecting woman, how absurd!

You understand where he is coming from. He is leaving you to decide how much do you really want without putting himself in the scathing spotlight of corruption. Corruption, Corruption... how many Metra do you plan to rake from the budget? You set example to those below you.

The man was baffled by your reply, he asked you twice for a reconfirmation. Your answer was still the same, as you are the public servant of the people. Besides, you and your wife are content with what you have.

Your decision had made its way to the ears of every Arkulandian, rich and poor alike. With the help of Ms. Mazzan, you have successfully funded a small soup cart project. Your men couldn't feed everyone, but it is a start.

You had two special guests in the next few days, the first being a blessed sister from the Saints of Voropa. This holy organization had saved thousands of soldiers during the Great War, and had a small outpost in your town. When the Northern countries were swimming in debt and deficit, the saints graciously intervened after their initial neutral stance. It's not a surprise to see them in the new world; between the natives and the vicious nature of this place, Arkuland is losing men and women left and right.

Your second guest was a Reh-Atyra, a priestess from the the Da'eea, or the sacred winds. They are main religious body of most Easterners, known for their potent arcane prowess. While they are of similar nature to the Saints, they serve a larger purpose in the Eastern Wing with greater influence. Their services encompass many aspects of Easterner's religious lives. They will only heal their kin, but as with most of their supernatural power, there are several limitations to what they can do. Can they heal a stab wound? A broken bone? Most definitely . Can they restore a missing limb? Reconstruct a face blown by shrapnel? Debatable. It is said that their arcane healing is affected by how sinful the patient is. The two gods must be finicky.

At any rate, the dyad were thankful for helping the poor. Each woman (despite their radically different ideologies) had agreed on assisting you should you require their aid. Who knows, some divine intervention might be of use to you at a later date.

Month 2/36

The New Advisor

The unnatural wind surrounding the continent does not only obscure the paradise from watchful eyes but also it blocks all form of long-ranged communications namely Telewave for the Union and the mysterious yet cruel Keelamm for the Wing utilizing portable iron tombs, some of their dead can transmit messages across long distances. Both sides were biting their nails throughout the last month. You have assured them that Arkuland still stands, no savages at the gates, no uprising in the works...everything is running smoothly as it should be.

The invisible hands of the old world has 'rewarded' you with a unique decree; one that could overrule any pesky restriction in the Dual-Law. You could practically do anything with them. No repercussions.

You ask yourself: Should you really use them? What if they are some sort of a wicked test of will? The Eastern Wing Countries are famous of this trickery... then it is a one way (or more depending on how many lesser deaths one had suffered) trip to the chopping block.

+1 Union Decree
+1 Wing Decree

In other news, The drug known as the Devil's sigh had made headlines for the umpteenth time, fingers pointing at the law enforcers who are allowing this infernal drug to infest Arkuland.

You had to look into this matter personally; the photographs of its victims were gut-wrenching. Blistering eyes and mouth as if they were set aflame, bleeding ears and nose, pallid skin...just what is this drug made of?

You asked Ms. Adeel to summon some of your advisors to help you to uncover the true nature of this devil's sigh.

" This is hardly my responsibility, Governor. Unless the demon's sigh or whatever is arming itself to take Arkuland by force. " said Aukustus Darvin, your military advisor.

" The nerve of this man! I oversee TECHNOLOGICAL progress. Machinations, Clockwork beauties, STEAM! The art of life and her derivatives are not my area of expertise. For the love of the lord, do not bother me again with such nonsense! " Noskk waltzed off right away.

"The poison of the mind...The poison of the soul. Red ashes born from the childless, perfected by tainted men selling their morals for profit...Alas, my knowledge ends here." Ms. Kasoof barely moved her lips.

" Governor, We have another major issue. One that overshadows the Devil's Sigh. " Ms. Mazzan proclaimed " Governor Ayyah had choked the life out of our research department with such a laughable budget, you don't even have a research advisor! What hope do we have to fully understand our home without proper research? Mr. Noskk is not interested in the matter while Matrah Kasoof is only versed in the arcane aspect of the natives. Governor Ayyah knew that but the woman would rather expand our borders instead. "

2/?
>>
>>4786800

" I will not allow you to speak ill of Governor Ayyah!" Medehat finally broke his silence " She was a great woman who met her true death too soon. She built this very city, these very walls, everything around you! Tarnish not her name in my presence, woman!"

" Oh please, She is responsible for the death of Divonna and a thousand men more! "

" It was HER choice to pursue a fool's errand. You inso-"

"ENOUGH!" Both of them fell silent , you turned to Ms. Mazzan first " Tell me, Who is this Divonna?"

You learned a great deal about this Northern-blooded naturalist, zoologist and explorer responsible many feats in the first year of settling down here. Apparently, She came to Governor Ayyah some time two years ago asking her to have a full expeditionary battalion and a small team of researcher on her side so she can 'solve the greatest enigma of humankind'. The expedition ventured deep into uncharted territories never to return. It is unknown why did Ayyah give her the permission to do in the first place instead of letting the explore continue her job of categorizing every plant , rock and animal she could find. The two weren't fond of each other so much so that more of previous proposals were outright rejected.

You stand at a crossroads. The woman seems more than capable to be your advisor...provided that she is alive in the first place. It has been two years already. Explorer or not, One can not survive alone in such hostile lands for too long. Are you willing to endanger the lives of hundreds for the sake of a ghost trapped in a greenish hell? The preliminarily reports indicates that the natives' arcane is more powerful the closer they are to the center of the continent.

A few days later, your secretary had complied the a solid list for you. This Divonna had taken nearly every reputable researcher with her in the doomed expedition with all of her work, as well leaving Arkuland with only novices. The woman was a bit paranoid, burying her research notes under layers upon layers of encryption only known to her. She didn't leave anything in Arkuland, her office and laboratory was practicality devoid of any good information about this so called enigma.

You took a deep sigh, what drives such a woman to be so...so... suicidal? Didn't she know the risks of her ventures? It's too late to ponder about such things, the fabled explorer is most likely dead.

You examine the list carefully, it had the following:

- Tonberr Viostfellow : A well-known zoologist across the union. Tonberr had discovered dozens of creatures in the most inhospitable places ever imagined; from the snowy peaks of Yegmanr to the hellish ash-riddled grounds of Linfadn. However, her feats are often tainted by her loathsome altitude against kith and kin, considering any Non-Northerner to be subhuman mongrel. Yes, she won't shy away from lashing her tongue. The 'Grey Vulture,' as they call her, will not accept non-northerner researchers. You will have to whiten the department just for her sake.

- Hekmitt Rozor : Born without any trace of Arcane, the Easterner sought other earthly knowledge, steadily becoming one of the Wing's most brilliant alchemists and botanists. Each year, he supplies the Wing with new concoctions, ones that rivals the remedies of the pharmaceutical industries of the North. There is a darker aspect of that man hidden behind closed doors... his experimentation on live subjects was exposed to the whole world after the great war was over. How many captured soldiers had died by his hands? He will most likely continue his research on captured natives, you won't be able to stop him since his works coincides with the wing's intrest.

- Andros Dillipe : The last territorian of Divonna's original team, this territorian had caught a fever a few days before the expedition. In a twisted turn of events, His illness had spared him a most horrible fate. While his knowledge of flora and fauna is no where near the above mentioned pioneers, He was there when Arkuland was still a fleet of walking ships. Governor Ayyah had put his geological knowledge into uncovering more potential resources. The man knows the land well, being quite an explorer but in the end, he is still a territorian. There is a good reason on why your cabinet lacks anyone from the Western continent or the Southern Isles.

We're behind on our quota and have some appreciation to spare with the Northerners.

I do actually like the idea of raising up the Territorians and not being a horrible slaver and killing and enslaving the natives, but frankly if we wanna go that route I think we should've committed to that route right from that start or otherwise start barreling down that path form this moment forward because I don't think that we can half ass doing such a thing. We'd have to really focus on it and make sacrifices elsewhere and do just barely enough to balance things out that we don't lose through some of our other stats going into fail-state territory.

If we aren't going to commit to such a task we may as well just balance between the two people's and governments that seem to matter, the Northerners and the Easterners, and just colonize the shit out of the natives, it's probably easier and simpler that way.

You caused quite an uproar in both the new and the old world; a territorian in a position so high? Even in their conquered homelands, the westerners and the southerners are always stuck with low-paying jobs... they had no saying in pretty much anything!

Once tho Union and the Wing had heard of this debacle, they rained hellfire upon your office for seeking such a radical alternative. They threatened to strip you of some of your privileges as a governor, calling you to remove this territorian immediately from your cabinet. You had to use some political finagling to calm their fiery tempers a bit, proclaiming that you are merely aiming to please the minorities, nothing more. He will be a useful sock puppet with no actual authority.

Of course, the prime legislator and the sword-law expressed their own colour of disdain in response to your latest decision. No, you are not an embarrassment to Arkuland. Men and Women should be hired based on their merit and merit alone. The territorian was more than qualified for the job.

Sticking by your morals had cost you dearly, as your reputation was tarnished in the following weeks. No matter, you will gain their trust in no time.

I think this is the main reason to pick Andros as the advisor and why I would've voted for it if I had the time to vote. Also, we just need +1 strategy to get "The Lost Expedition" assuming we can do the thing with ???. I think we should try to aim for it since we have until month 4 (at month 1 he said it expired in 3 months so that's why I say that) and I have a gut feeling that these events could be really cool/useful.

Also, as a side thing, we have 0 corruption but garbage reputation with the great powers and career. Since we can't go below 0 corruption but can get reductions to it in the future, we should consider voting for corruption options if the trade offs are good. Just a thought...

Event requirement met: Gone Native!

Yet another dull day in your office, Ms. Adeel made you a 'Khawaa' for a change. You protested at first but the aroma was quite inviting. A bitter drink, that and yet it had an invigorating effect on your body. According to your secretary, the Union calls this drink 'Coffee'. You have never heard of such a drink in your life!

"Your countrymen had banned our humble drink citing that it is another vicious drug born from eastern wombs." She had the right to poke at the laws of the Union; some of them are as outlandish as their eastern counterpart.

"Is it really that addicting, Ms. Adeel? I do not wish to consume it on daily basis."

"Hardly, Go...v..." Ms.Adeel's eyes and nose began to bleed as she collapsed on the floor. You came to her help but soon enough, you shared the same fate nearly dropping on her lap.

The droplets of blood started to hop on the carpet, they grew thicker with each passing second swelling in volume. The two of your were too dumbfounded and weakened to react properly. The pool of blood was but a foundation to bone , sinew , flesh , skin and hair.

A native.

You have never seen their ilk until now. The woman drenched in blood who was standing before you was bare from the waist up with two heads or so above yours. One hand held a crude dagger, the other was riddled with small holes. Each hole had some sort of worm parasite well-burrowed in her flesh. Now, you can understand why the natives are treated as subhumans by the Wing. That....thing had no trade of civility. It was an uplifted beast walking on two legs.

The native bared her long fangs hissing and concocting some infernal noises from her swollen throat. The walls of your office were meant to muffle sounds, no one will come to your aid... unless you made haste to your duress button purely hidden under your office desk.

" Gov-jonth? Govrrrw-ells? Hora-aru ten tentri?" The native pointed her dagger at you asking the same question over and over. She sniffed the air before unleashing a torrent of blood and worms at the door, the sloshing mixture had formed an arcane barrier near the door ensuring that no one will get in or out of here.

"Governor..." Ms. Adeel whispered " The native is...ugh..from an uncontacted clan. I-I can understand some of her words. She said : Are you the headclan of grey walls?"

Curses, If she had wanted you dead, you and your secretary would have been bloodless husks by now. No, She wants answers, ones that you may not have. How was she able to teleport to your office? Shouldn't Ms. Kasoof negate ALL arcane usages in the Core Tower? Unless..

"Governor, w-what should I say?" Most women would have panicked by now for the weaker sex throw rationality out of the window but not Ms. Adeel, she regained her composure quickly waiting for your response.

You watched the two women conversing in a foreign tongue in silence daring not to interrupt them. As the sizzling tension in the air began to fade away, the bare-chested woman had lowered her dagger. The accursed barrier still stood however.

The easterner turns to you, her face is mired with grief much like the native before you " Governor, this Iwenganaw daughter of Vimengnaw of the 'buried hands' tribe. She..." Ms. Adeel was trying to find the right set of words "... in loss, dawning upon our cold, lifeless world after hearing so many tales about it... in loss, for losing a loving husband and a daughter. The 'frigid man' as she calls him is a northerner, a soldier lost in the fringes of her unknown clan's territory."

Wiping off the blood on your face, you sat down on your chair, willing to listen more to the native's tale " She was fascinated by his milky skin, while the blood of the dying was tempting, she had enlivened him with her very own blood. Sharing blood is common among their newly wed. She wanted to claim this alien man for herself so none of her clan can have them."

"Go on."

"The frigid man warned her of our world and what they are doing to weaker clans. He was captured last weak when he tried to save his daughter from a Haash processing encampment near frozen pearl lake..."

"Is there something wrong?" Your secretary was perturbed.

"Governor Ayyah had ...extensive crossbreeding programs with the natives ever since the foundation of Arkuland. Said procreation attempts were always doomed. A half-native , half-northerner child is an impossibility. "

Behind a wall of savagery, you see a desperate mother pleading for the release of husband who had gone native as well as this wonderchild, The one in a whatever impossible odds stacked against her. The woman still didn't elaborate on how did she know where to find you AND how did she manage to bypass all of your security.

On the other side, someone was knocking on the door, fully unaware of the brimming chaos within your office. The native was on edge once more, strengthening her grip on the dagger.

Should you agree to aid her, you must accompany her personally to the butcherhouse else wise, She won't have faith in your words OR your men would simply kill/process her behind your back following the Sword-Law instead.. Studying the child and her parents could potentially yield several breakthroughs, all of which will bolster your reputation among the invisible hands puppeteering you.

On the other hand, reuniting the family might prove your stance with several uncontacted clans. It is the right thing to do, morally speaking.

Frankly, their shit is disgusting and I want us to have no part of it. That said if they KEEP IT TO THEIR GODDAMNED SELVES then whatever. Didn't we say we were going to check this shit out anyways?

At any rate: If I had any real input into this, I'd say something like 'give her the husband back IF he wants to go back, but the child needs to be studied- humanely. A live subject is more researchable than a dead one. She can be afforded visitation rights until we're done, but we WILL need to figure out what the fuck happened to basically give biology the middle finger.

But since no write-ins, I need more information and would prefer to converse with other voters.
>>
>>4795347
I am generally a huge fan of write-ins for a lot of reasons but I can't have it in this particular quest because of the consequences associated with each choice. Aside from certain events or pre-choices , you guys MUST know what will happen next.

Release the husband, the child stays with us.

We also have the option of just betraying her and not releasing either.

I have no sympathy for these native savages and we desperately need to showcase to the powers back home that we still deserve to be in charge.

Supporting. The Easterners in particular will want to get their hands on this wonderchild. A disgusting choice, but with our current stats backing the territorians has cost us dearly and we need to do something drastic to balance it out. At the very least it only cost one child so far rather than being a choice between keeping power and genocide or something equally awful.

Shoot to kill.
>>
This mad bitch just murdered someone and threatened us with a knife. Why should we give in to her demands?
>>
>>4795802
Because we A: have a heart, and B: don't know jack shit about her abilities. Considering she just kinda shlorped in here avoiding all security in an instant, then for all we know it might not actually stick. Her demands aren't completely innocuous due to our position, but they ARE understandable and relatively easily accomplished with minor issue on our part- the most difficult part of it is social retribution, not physical. Generally, it'd be better to just give her what she wants at least in partial, and have her fuck off so she doesn't have reason to try this again.

And in that vein of thought:

>[Diplomacy 3 or more] " Tell her she can only a single family member could be released."

Take the husband and GTFO.

Ms. Adeel somehow convinced the native that her child no longer walks amongst the living. Deceit was a must in this situation, otherwise, the woman of the buried hands would have gone amok.

The barrier had dissipated, this Iwenganaw had lowered her dagger, and watched poor Jacob Vangree dropping his vintage bottle of wine upon witnessing the sprawling chaos around you.

"G-Gustav!" Your silver guard stationed outside of your office knew something was wrong right away, he shoved the half drunken grand coremaster aside already aiming his rifle towards the confused native.

"Lower your weapon, damn it!" You bellowed as more of the silver guards were pouring in.

Your guards were hesitant after spotting the bloodstains on your shirt as well as your secretary's.

"They are bewitched! Make way, Make way!" You know these heavy footsteps all too well...

Clockwork Soldiers.

Men of metal and steam. Automatons specifically constructed to counter the arcane tricks of the east during the great war. They have no flesh to burn, no mind to control, no will to bend... the perfect soldier. Their steam cores alongside their Reason-Boxes which dictates their actions are extremely expensive. The towering steam-man had already brandished its four weapons, all of them were pointed at the intruder who shrieked in defiance.

"STOP THIS MADNESS!" The clockwork solider was merely an inch away from cleaving Ms. Adeel as she stood between it and its target " This woman poses no threat to anyone, return to your post, now!"

"You heard the lady, cog man. Begone!" You had to step in.

" Analyzing...new set of orders issued from Governor Jonathan Wells... complying. Have a wonderful day, gentlemen."

_____________

Dealing with the aftermath was a strenuous task; your arcane advisor had to check if you were really under her spell or not. She never felt a blip of arcane the whole time the native was there. This security breach will revise a lot of things in the future.

Frozen Pearl encampment was two hours away from Arkuland, the lake its was harboring a curious sight: an white egg of sorts with many tendrils were floating near the center of the lake. Everything and everyone within its proximity was frozen solid. Has anyone researched this egg? A question for another day.

This is one of the many places where captured natives are subjected to torture until they are ripe for the grinder. Afterwards, their remains would be shipped to the main Haash factory.

None of the butchers inside were expecting the governor himself paying them a visit let alone with a bloody native of all people. You explained the matters at hand to one Romayah Shilal, who was responsible for running the operations here.

>>
" Llassaat, Geeb Motakakeer." She wiped the sweat off her double chin with a half baked smug on her face. Fresh blood and bits of flesh were strewn all over her apron with a rusted cleaver dangling on her right side. She ought lose a few pounds if she is to work in the field like so.

"What do you mean?" Anger was quickly drawn on Ms.Adeel's face.

" Your Abyaadi had killed three of *my* men while trying to escape just three hours ago. I had the pleasure to do some chopping, hehhehe.."

"You can be serious. Wher-how?" You were at loss of words.

" I am sorry," She shrugged effortlessly "First time someone tried to catch some fresh air. I had to make an example out of him to our current residents... we wouldn't want them to have some wild ideas, would we? They gobbled his fleshly bits in no time. You would be amazed what can starvation do to the human mind. Then again, the Childless aren't exactly on par with you and me."

The native was already on edge, She *knows* what is going on behind these walls. Thank goodness she can't understand you.

"I know of the wonderchild you speak of , governor. She has been giving us a lot of trouble, I knew something wasn't right with her....what is that smell?" She sniffed the air a couple of times before letting out a small moan of pleasure.

"Do you know who I am? I am a Loaboyah, a faithful hound of the Wing. I am no Matrah but I can detect any trace of arcane within a person allowing me to gauge their strength. The woman behind you... she is filled up to the gills. Thirty or forty times more than the average resident of our encampment. Where are her bloodmarks? her tattoos and face paint? Doesn't matter, give me the word, governor."

Wonderful, you were hoping to show her his body at the very least but that won't happen any time soon. You have nothing to offer to the native. Well, there is one thing you can do...

>"Do it, Ms Romayah" [???]
She will join her husband in their heathen afterlife.

>"I want her subdued , Ms. Romayah" [???]
She is more valuable that way.

>"Release the child" [???]
How will Ms.Adeel explain the sudden revival of her daughter?

>" Ms. Adeel, Inform her of her husband's demise" [???]
Perhaps the grieving woman will accept her loss and move on... or perhaps, she will slash your throat instead.

Tch. I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting it to just be 'no, you can't do that option because unforeseen reasons'. Not used to that, not that it hasn't happened before or that I haven't participated in such quests. I just have to get back into a mindset of 'I don't actually care about any of these people, I just want to beat/survive the quest', which I haven't used in a while.

It's an impressively built world you've made, but I don't think I can really *indulge* in it. Options are too limited for my tastes. But the mechanics are interesting enough, so that's pretty cool.

So.

I don't really see a good way out of this regardless. Logically, the EASIEST solution would be to just kill her and be done with it, but I can imagine that'll have consequences further down the line and forment rebellion. Subduing would give us research and tech but possibly forment chances for sabotage and generally if it's found out would kill public perception.

Releasing her would deprive us of a lot of research and possibly convince her that we wanted to bullshit her, and still ruin our rep further amongst the North and ultimately throw us further into suspicion and wanting to unseat us. Informing her will likely make her extra pissed and cause unrest as she's more than likely planning on seeking retribution against her and us.

I can't see any worthwhile long term good coming of any decision.
>>
>>4797449
Sometimes, there isn't any good option around so to speak. You just have to pick the lesser evil , anon. It is a balancing act of morality and self preservation among other things.

And no, I don't think choosing votes according to Jonathan's interests/survival aka meta-gaming is the best way to play. You, the players, should roleplay as the governor seeking your people's needs, protecting Arkuland from any threat and so on. I won't shame you or whatever if you chose not to care about the sake of everyone but you.rself

Also, another thing worth mentioning is the so called death spiral. You will see a potential game over MILES AWAY, an amalgamation of several choices. It won't happen because of a single choice.

TL;DR I appreciate you taking your time to express your thoughts, that is the sign of a good player. We are barely starting the quest with no overarching plot as so far. Don't take everything at face value and have a bit of patience. Of course, If you have any suggestions to make the quest more enjoyable, please say so.

The husband was actually gonna be alive but I decided otherwise. You will see why later on.

*plot so far.
That's what I get for writing too fast.
>>

> but I can imagine that'll have consequences further down the line and forment rebellion.

I'll have to disagree. Sure, the public might know about our intruder but they will be clueless about her fate. Ms. Adeel certainly won't rat you out , same goes with Ms. Romayah. Do note that most of our current cabinet are indifferent or straight up hostile against the native. Same goes with our citizens.

Territorians (Minorities) are too oppressed to actually care about the natives, they are scraping by. Easterners? Sure, they love the natives as slaves and exotic power-ups. Only a vocal portion of Northerners are protesting against the inhumane treatment of the natives. Don't forget about the bad blood between Arkuland and the natives; how many soldiers and workers have been killed by the natives throughout these three years? Even If someone had a neutral stance with them, he or she is bound to lose a friend, a husband, a son...etc during one of their raids or ambushes.

>"Release the child" [???]

Ms.Adeel can simply explain that we were mistaken and in fact it was her husband that had perished. The possible lack of believability will hopefully be overcome by us showing good faith and releasing her child.

I don't think a one time boost of a person worth 40 regular natives is worth shit. We are 'processing' these people on an industrial scale, one small boost is worthless.

I also don't think that we could subdue her before she teleports away, she's pretty powerful with unknown capabilities and trying to take her alive for research could allow her to cast a spell or otherwise kill someone.

This is a tough choice (didn't expect the high diplo option would give such a shitty outcome) but I think this is the right pick. The girl is worth more than just the raw output since the mad scientists and homeland would get a lot out of her. "Uhm..ah.. you sure this is a good idea? Governor, can you reconsider all the potential res-"

" This is an order, Ms. Romayah. The girl and her mother will not be harmed. " You took a step forward, raising a warning finger " Should you, the Sword-Law or any of you eastern lots conspire behind my back to recapture them, there will be hell to pay, understand?"

"Y-yes, sir." She nodded, her confidence was shattered the moment after, all of that blubber won't save her from your wrath.

"Ms. Adeel, I want you to station one of our good men in this encampment, someone who I can trust." Your secretary nodded. It was time to reunite the family together but not before one awkward explanation. Ms. Adeel did her best to smooth things over with the native who was coping with this recent loss relatively well.

The three of you had to wait outside the encampment until a small company of guards had arrived with the girl. She was at least five or six years old, chained and shackled by chains and collar of silver for it is the sole metal capable of dampening one's arcane. The Wonderchild did have some northern features here and there but she was mostly a smaller replica of her mother who was crying tears of joy.

"Unshackle her, damn it! Are you afraid of a little girl?" You barked at Romayah's men who followed your orders reluctantly. The child had thrown herself into her mother's embrace right away.

" Hirkenmanin, Foena aep muuncaoe. Sokeot vsn Sokeot! Gi-ft, Bl-ood, Bon-d." The child stared at you with her unnatural white eyes, her sharp fangs in full view as she gave you an innocent smile. The mother was agreeing with whatever she had just said.

"Translation, Ms. Adeel?"

"..."

"Ms. Adeel?"

"Yes, Governor." She cleared her throat "The child speaks of one of their traditions. Life is a sacred thing, since you had saved her from certain death, She has to offer her blood as... your Sokeot."

"Pardon me?" What is this nonsense?

"Blood-Bonded. It is... another form of marriage but on spiritual level. The souls of the Sokeot are supposedly linked to each other. It is a one-sided blood transfusion, Governor. You can always refuse her offer."

The natives truly have no decency. Of course you don't want to be 'spiritually' bonded to a child.. or do you?

The thought was indeed tempting and yet, it feels woefully wrong to do so. Are you betraying your Margret by accepting the blood of the Wonderchild? how about your cabinet? the very city you swore to serve faithfully? Will her blood empower you or turn you insane? The only man who knew the answer dwells deep in starving bellies.

Very tough choice. The stat boost is wonderful, but I'm not sure being tied to this native group is wise until we can divine a political path that reconciles the natives with the eastern wing, plus the easterners may try and dissect us for our blood afterwards. I think perhaps rejecting the power for now is good, that way we can get the political benefits and lessen tensions between the natives and us.

Another thing to note is that we understand VERY little of this continent and its peoples and magic or flora and fauna. We may want to follow up on some of the event paths or otherwise research this place before doing anything drastic. The child's fangs and the mention of plants that eat corpses don't give me faith in this places metaphysics, I don't wanna be a vampire.

I'd also rather go for the sure thing rather than risk an event that may require stats we don't have to get a good benefit out of it. We already know options that need stats aren't always predictable or good. This being in regards to the last option.

Her innocence was whisked away by a sudden, bestial wail as she sank her long fangs into her wrist tearing skin and flesh until amber blood had escaped its confines.

" Fueoashikkaoh, Gov-jonth." The mother had guided you to this youthful fountain of blood. At first, you were disgusted by the mere prospect of it but you were soon consumed by an unspeakable urge to lick that sweet nectar.

Her blood will be yours.

Your chapped lips were tingling in anticipation. There was one last attempt from your mind to pull you away from unexplored temptations but it was soon silenced by the taste of the Wonder-Blood. Better than the finest wine, it was.

"Thank you. This was an...exhilarating experience." You stopped yourself from clinging to her arm like an insatiable leech. Enough was enough.

The Wonderchild nodded as if she could fully understand you. She proceeded to draw a circle of blood around her and her mother, a ritual perhaps?

" Guungienvae.." Uttered the mother before melting away alongside her daughter. The puddle of bloodied-hair, bones and flesh was soon swallowed by the very soil leaving you with a group of flummoxed easterners.

"You saw nothing." You gave them a single warning. They'll think twice before babbling about what happened.

As for you, You were mostly fine; your mind is intact as well as your aching body. All's well that ends well, no?

In the Hush-Hush

The end of the month beckons. It was quite eventful if you dare say so. Your mind often strays to a recent memory, that of a white-eyed child. You find it quite unsettling to see her in some of your dreams, sometimes she is picking berries in the vermilion skies... othertimes, She is spilling black blood from a clockwork solider reveling in her triumph over progress. You do not know how to interpret said dreams. Perhaps they are just that. Your arcane advisor could possibly help you to break down the true intent of your dreams. The question is: Can you trust her with your secret?

You haven't told your wife about it either. Why? Are you ashamed of your deeds? You can not say. Your sacred marriage had remained strong throughout the years. Ever faithful you will be to Margret and yet your dealing with the natives had left a burning hole in your chest. You feel almost compelled to reveal your secret to your wife, perhaps over dinner. Martin would curse you to no end , when was the last time you say your flesh and blood? The latest report of his battalion stated that they will return to Arkuland for a brief resupply. Your Paternal instincts is clouding your judgement, will you ask him to spend time with his old man?

You could distract yourself with more work instead, the core tower had another hiccup the other day... well, more of an unfortunate infestation . The workers in the lower levels like to call them Gizzers due to the sound they make when threatened like a malfunctioning clockwork solider . They are an unholy abomination of rat-spider spinning slimy webs nearly everywhere. The situation should be controllable but Jacob would appreciate some input from your side.

Speaking of appreciation, your research advisor is working himself day and night to prove his worth to you and the rest of Arkuland. You vaguely recall a conversation last week about him being an avid fishing enthusiast. The territorian will burn himself out at this rate. That fishing trip you might use a third man in case you caught a *big* fish. Yes, The man surely deserves some respite.

-1 Unity (1) [Peaceful]

" Something wrong , dear? You barely touched your plate." Your appetite combined with the grim look on your face were a clear giveaway.

" Margret, there is something we need to discuss." You couldn't wait any longer. With haste, you regurgitated the tale of the child and her wonder-blood. It wasn't easy to admit that you did enjoy her succulent gift but you did it anyways; you never hid anything from your wife throughout these years.

It was hard to read her contorted expression as she stood up abruptly, unsure what to do or to say for a few seconds" Pass me the Ryst Tart, if you will."

"Margret, pleas-"

"There is nothing to talk about." She cuts you in a blink " You are an adult man, Jonathan. You can do whatever you want."

" I would never betray you , let alone with a child!" You almost raised your voice. You know your wife like the palm of your hand , however, she is a woman. who would be jealous of any younger girl. These sirens might enthrall you with their beauty. This jealously can make women irrational, hysterical even.

"Oh, I know. And our son?"

"He best not to know about this."

" Of course,The tart, please?" She was quick to end the conversation. You had to force yourself to finish your plate ,otherwise, you would offend your wife even further.

You were not accustomed to this unbearable silence from your beloved. Margret is better to endure a sting of truth rather than a twisted stab of lies.

Not enough

Recent reports indicates that the attacks on work sites and supply lines has decreased ever so slightly since the last month... Was it you, Wonderchild? You can not say but you know this: her spectral visage still manifests inside your dreams. What sort of mystic trouble have you dragged yourself into?

A flood in the north, An earthquake in the east. Hundreds dead on both sides. Two natural disasters occurring in the same time....quite a coincidence. The end results remain the same: Your overlords demand more.

-1 Quota Nythriem (-1) [Below demand]
-1 Quota Haash Elixir (-2) [Below demand]

They recommend increasing your 'pitiful' Quota or they will be forced to withdraw some of their more serious funds keeping Arkuland afloat. The message was loud and clear. Your city , despite governor Ayyah's efforts, still relies heavily on imports to survive. Arkuland is far from sustainable as of today. Maybe you will be the change that Arkuland needed, Maybe not.

There are even more problems on the street-level; there is a killer on the loose, one who is fond of stitching the heads of his/her rich victims to a body of a pig causing hue and cry among the high society. As if this wasn't enough, An influential easterner political figure who was on vacation had decided to purchase four young native slaves before defiling and cooking them alive! This atrocity was only known to the world after he attempted to murder a territorian maid as she discovered his dirty deed.

Safaal Monhett is the man responsible of this depraved act against nature. Rape, Murder, Cannibalism? He should hang for his crimes and yet, he might not be trialed at all thanks to his connections. The eastern filth is currently under house arrest, the law enforcers dare not to touch him without the approval of a higher power such as yourself.

That man deserves a true death , the only solution for bastards like him. Every fibre of your body demands it. You are fully aware of the consequences that will follow . If he manages to board the next walking ship, he will commit more and more of these heinous crimes behind closed doors.

>Sign in a proposition (Write in whether it will be MIL/DIP/ADMIN) [Different results according to your choice(s) ]

Our relations with the Eastern Wing are pretty dire and I'm not sure we can allow justice to prevail as a result. We need to increase our quotas and improve our career prospects. Sadly, that involves more native subjugation, we really need a permanent solution to get the easterners their elixir without having to grind up natives.

The locals of Arkuland seem to like us at the moment, while we haven't been cracking down on crime and this may be a worsening problem in the future, we can afford to delay addressing it for now probably.

As for the cannibal, if he leaves then so be it, if he goes east then one of his own kind will get fed up with him and murder him with magic or something, damn his connections, not every governor is as import reliant as we are, if he goes north they'll execute him, I doubt they care what the easterners think.

Your time is too precious to waste it on chasing elusive killers or hanging cannibals. You work for the good of *all* of Arkuland. Such small matters could surely be resolved without your direct intervention.

Your lovely secretary had brought you three propositions for you to choose from. You are only bound to sign one of them. The rest might show up in the following months, eventually. Ms. Adeel gave you a brief summary on their unsigned contents:

The military proposition R-48 is a glorified feud between your technological Advisor, Mr.Noskk , and an inspiring inventor who had recently arrived from the South. Both of them have their rather unique plans for erecting defenses around the city in anticipation for a full scale attack. Your military advisor wishes to summon him should you go for that proposal.

The diplomatic proposition M-95 is split into two parts: The first and foremost is our stance against Zofierro, a small southern island which had overpowered the eastern garrison stationed there. They immediately call for the Union's help wishing to surrender their sovereignty to the north. The second part is concerned about the few territorians from that island who live and work here. The Wing believes that most if not all of them are conspirators who had indirectly helped their little isle to achieve their 'freedom' . The Wing demands a swift punishment for the Zofierroians.

The administrative proposition U-11 surprises no one in the core tower. It is a quick reaction against the sudden increased Quota demanded by the great powers . Much like the previous proposition, this one had a portion dedicated to our Haash Elixir production and another one for our Nythriem production. It should be noted that this proposition will be signed one way or another. It will appear on your desk at the start of each month due to its urgency. You can choose one of the first two propositions instead (especially the diplomatic one due to being time-sensitive). The Wing and the Union won't lash their whip so quickly; it will take them a couple of months before they will ready their whip.

"Sigh" Ruling seems to be a perpetual balancing act. Lets do this one, despite me harping about the quotas, it seems we have some leeway for a couple of months.

If we rule in favour of the Wing then that should balance out our deficit in favour with them as well as boost our career for handling a situation with a deft hand. Or perhaps there is a more elegant solution we can come to with our skill in diplomacy.

DIP Proposition M-95 : Zofierro Insurrection Statement and Act

Zofierro is the second smallest isle among the southern isles with 11,382 Southerners (9034 native and the rest are from different isles) , 21 Westerners, 552 Easterners (500 soldiers and the rest taking administrative positions in the isle) and 33 Northerners. It is devoid of any strategic resources with the sole exception of bountiful fishes , oysters and their remarkable pearls which is used in many alchemical recipes.

When the great war was over, The Wing had used force to subjugate some of the isles. Zofierro's dock was bombarded with arcane fire , their fishing and trading ships ( Zofierro didn't really have a proper army) were sunk. The Wing bids its time for the small isle to submit without any man on the ground. Anyone nearing the beach to catch something as small as a crab was scorched to death. The blockade had a ship full of food anchored within the struggling islanders so it can 'motivate' them to surrender faster.

Two months later, half of the population had succumbed to starvation, the rest had no choice but to bend a sickly knee to the Wing for the sake of the walking skeletons that were their children.

Women and children alike were shackled and shipped back to the east as slaves. The rest were forced to fish for their lives. The elderly and maimed were outright killed for their disabilities.

how could a bunch of fishermen outbest 500 men? Through smuggling. Yes, they have been arming themselves rifle by rifle for months. A crate full of rifles would be too suspicious for your eastern tally clerk but a single rifle? it could slip easier and faster as well.

The insurrection happened overnight with roughly a quarter of the population bearing arms. Of the 552 easterner personnel, only 40 had survived the massacre. They became prisoners awaiting ransom who are forced to eat the meat of their fallen comrades for what they have done to the isle.

The Zofierroian had made contact with the union via a Telewave (The Northerners in the isle were unharmed ) , they expressed their desire to be under the union's merciful wings for they know that retaliation shall come soon enough, one that might end with every single one of them killed in the most brutal fashion.

The Union is yet to issue an official response. They don't want to spark another great war so soon for the sake of a tiny isle. The Wing on the other hand is too busy to handle the situation right away; they are struggling with rebellions and insurrections within their borders. They will be quelled eventually but they demand the Wing's full attention. The Wing could also be waiting for the Union and Arkuland to issue a statement before taking any serious action.

First things first: What manner of response are you going to state?

- Be as neutral as possible : A gelatinous blob of words meant to offend no one. Yet, you fear that the incident is testing Arkuland true alignment.

- Condemn the insurrection : This will please your eastern overload at the cost of your territorians who are looking up to you after the whole situation with your research advisor.

- Support Northern sovereignty : Slavery? Senseless murder? They are better off joining the other side. The Union will tax you to death, sure but it beats any eastern malice.

- Support Zofierroian's and the Southern Isles' independence : No country should be under another's thumb. They should seek their own freedom no matter the cost.

>An Eastern-sided response [ +2 Wing -1 Union, -1 Union Decree , -1 Territorians ]

...This will balance out our low standing with the Eastern Wing. Losing the Union Decree and the trait so early is pretty bad though. I'm tempted to just do the neutral response actually, even if it wastes a turn. Still, as we are low on standing with the East and before the stat adjustments, choosing anything else but this or the neutral option would've put us as an enemy of the Eastern Wing, though now we can go to -5.

Backing the southern way is a fast-track to us being removed as Governor.

We don’t even have backing in the military if the great powers try and remove us.
>>
>>4810877
Actually…could we send in our own military to reclaim control over the island?

Technically the ‘Wing’ would be in control again (as their our joint boss) - but it could be the first colony in our mini-Empire
>>
>>4811575
No, for many reasons. All of our military operations are restricted to the new world, a direct intervention would cause many problems from both the union and the union. We don't have neither the logistics nor the permission to sail across the old world for claiming the isle.

Also, there is no way in hell the Wing is going to handle the isle to us even if we did the dirty work for them. They will literally kill everyone on it but not now since they are busy.

The second part of the proposition concerns our Zofierroians. There are 20 of them in our lands, 17 men and 3 men , all of them coincidentally work together in our shipyard or harbour for repairs, cleaning and what not. They have a spotless record without a smidgen throughout these three years, their co-workers speak no ill of them.

The Wing proclaims that our Zofierroians had aided their kin against the garrison by smuggling weapons meant for our expeditionary battalions. While the reports suggests that there are indeed missing equipment, there is no solid evidence that they had anything to do with it. Also, the missing rifles are in single digits, which is half-expected with the massive shipments everywhere. It should be noted that Easterners rarely resort to crimes for they know the proper punishment awaiting them.

There are few choices before us, which one will you take?

- Hang them : According to eastern law, theft of any kind would result in a quick chop of either a armor a leg (the criminal is free to decide). This is not the case, however, aiding a coup? Not only should their corpses hang, but their stripped bodies should dangle for seventy days and seventy nights under the scorching sun as a reminder of the fate waiting for any rebel-at-heart. This action will no doubt appease the Wing.

- Put them in shackles, send them back to the east : They can do whatever they want with them. As long as your people don't know about it, you are fine with their deaths.

- They will be arrested, investigated and properly trialed here. : This is Arkuland, born from northern and eastern seeds yet her flowers and fruits are hers. They will be punished ONLY WITH sufficient evidence.

- They are free to live their lives : The Wing 'proclaims' this, 'proclaims' that... where is the proof? where is the evidence? Until they can procure one, Those Zofierroians will remain free as a bird.

Your very first public execution. Where will they hang?
Trait : Territorian in power and Trait: Southern Attention will be removed!

No one needs to know...
Trait: Southern Attention will be removed!

Who are you, really? Honest men and women or smuggler in disguise?

>None shall be executed, none shall be trialed for fictitious crimes. +1 Territorians , +2 Unrest -1 Wing, -1 Union ]
Your so called lack of action might trouble your Northern overlords as well.

>[LOCKED: Intrigue 3 or more] Fake their deaths [ +1 Territorians , +1 Intrigue , +1 Wing +1 Corruption ]
They will arrive safety in Haigernnaech come next month. A whole new life away from eastern prosecution. You can arrange that.

Well, they have to be appeased somehow. At least we get to keep Territorian in power.

>Ship them back to the east [ +2 Wing +1 Corruption ]

Shame about the trait, but honestly I'm not sure I even want the Southern Attention. A bunch of southerners idolizing us and otherwise getting us in trouble with the North and East is probably the last thing we want.

Though, I'm not sure I missed something, but I don't think a -5 with the North or East means we instantly lose and get removed as governor so much as that they try and assassinate us, though I could be wrong.

+2 Wing (-1) [Under suspicion]
+1 Corruption (1) [ Light Corruption]
-Trait: Southern attention

They will be rounded up in the middle of the night, The Wing can do whatever they want with them. Perhaps the islanders are indeed innocent, perhaps not. This won't be your problem.

The next few days marked the departure of one Safaal Monhett, he slipped like an eel from his house arrest thanks to Sword-Law Nakea't who personally intervened the first chance he got. Later on, it was revealed to you that Safaal is a powerful slave trader who had burrowed himself in the rotten flesh of politics thanks to his unending labor and fighting force. He wished to meet you personally but alas he had to return home; this house arrest had wasted several precious days of his life. Still, He learned that the Wing wasn't pleased with you as of late and so He promised the Sword-Law to smooth things over with your eastern overlords in the near future.

A message

"...Oh, It will be splendid, Jonathan. You *must* celebrate with us!" Your rosy-cheeked Coremaster was roping you into another ball. You are not that kind of man who attends these foolish gatherings; you can not dance at all and you will look like a stuffed peacock in one of these ridiculous suits.

"Jacob, my friend. You are aw-"

"No excuses, don't you..." He leaned closer whispering "... want to see your secretary in a new light? One with less cloth and more skin, I'd wager!"

"I am a married man. My eyes, heart and soul belong to Margret." You repeated yourself for lord know how many times.

Jacob was about to retort but your secretary had entered your office with a sealed envelope "A letter from your wife, Governor."

"Oooh~ urgent domestic business, I best be off." Jacob, along Ms.Adeel, had left the office. This was odd; why didn't your wife use the Tele-wave instead of writing this message? It must be something urgent.

>>
You opened the letter only to find the following:

' Dear Jonathan Wells,

First and Foremost, We sincerely apologize for trespassing your property for acquiring your own seal , as it was a must to deliver this letter to you. Naught of your belongings were stolen or rummaged through in any shape or form.

We are The Strays. We squeal and bark for someone to hear us, We wander aimlessly seeking a shelter, a place we can call him. We are minced, ground to bits by those above us, those who ignored our voices, our needs. The Union...The Wing... they are all the same. Power hungry, Tyrants, they care not for the likes of us. The poor, poor, strays.

This paradise, it must be ours, yours...anyone who wished to escape the hellscape that is the old world. This letter is a declaration of friendship between you and the strays...

or war.

We have been growing in numbers throughtout the last few months, silently but steadily. Our ranks encompasses vagrants, workers, soldiers, why...we might have someone or two in your very tower. Some noble will host a ball in the next few days, inviting you alongside every single member of your cabinet. We care little for them with the exception of two individuals:

Medehat Kalamah and Arudelle Cenidekt

He forges, He blackmails , He is robbing you and Arkuland blind, actively ruining lives under the protection of the Sword-Law. While She is a faithful hound to the union, She is ruthless by putting her masters' interests over her people...your people. The Blueblood had executed many soldiers behind your back, if she sniffed the slightest faint of treason, she will send you to the gallows or one of the many black sites unbeknownst to you.

They must be replaced with more...reasonable men and women. The prime legislator will suffer a horrible accident during her speech while your economic advisor will die of poison in his wine, one with no cure thanks to our native friends. We share our plans with you because we have faith in our new governor who didn't betray his people of Devtzshik. You served them well, We only ask the same.

Should you alert anyone of our plan or try to foil it. You will force the strays to spread chaos throughout Arkuland. Think, Jonathan, Think: The life of a man and a woman, both twisted in their own way or the lives of many innocent Arkulandians? We strive to free Arkuland and the natives of tyranny be it with subterfuge or direct conflict.

Best Regards, The Strays.'

You slammed your desk in anger.

Dogs! Mongrels! How dare they threaten your fair city?! Their intangible dream of independence would never be achieved this way. What will you do? Surrender to their demands or disrupt their plans? Two lives versus many....

Tough choice, on one hand getting rid of them could rid us of some troublesome and corrupt cabinet members. On the other hand, I'm not sure essentially being held hostage to these ideologues is something we want to go on for long, even say that we agree with their goals of freedom for Arkuland, this city cannot resist the East or the North, they're fucking superpowers, plus we are import dependent at the moment, we could have disagreements of strategy or the need to balance things out for achieve what needs to be done for the sake of Arkuland.

Warning Medehat and Arudulle could get them in our pockets for the foreseeable future, it would just depend on whether their maxed out relationship with us will make it so they are more malleable and receptive to following our agenda over the Sword-Law's or the North. The repercussions seems really bad, but perhaps it is better to start dealing with this group now while we don't have a ton of other military problems.

In the end...
>Burn the letter, don't attend the ball [ +1 Intrigue, +1 Career ]
We could use the boost to both our career and intrigue stat. Also I generally am okay with the strays ideological goals, I'm just worried about us clashing with them about how to go about achieving them. Replacing the two soon to be dead cabinet members with people more amenable to our goals will be good too.

This is a marvelous quest. From the description of the characters, the titles they possess, the background information supplied regarding the lands through various means, and the mannerisms and nature of the people who inhabit it, the thought and detail placed into the world have really brought this quest to life.
The character interactions feel organic and natural, the formatting makes it easy to read, dialogue and scene changes are broken up appropriately, giving it a nice flow, and the birds are a wonderful bow on top.
The Stats?! That alone shows the colossal effort put into making this quest as player driven as possible.
The real meat and potatoes though is the breadth and depth of the choices provided, each one having a very real, very immediate, and very different consequence, and perhaps even a far-flung outcome which will only be revealed at a later time that could have just been an afterthought when initially made.
This is what separates the wheat from the chaff. As showcased by the extra events, this intellectual approach given to force players to really read and think about their choices to either forward their agenda or spell their demise, without any hand-holding and true punishment for the wrong spoken word, is the best example of a real Damocles, that at any time we may be disposed of for having made the wrong set of decisions, is far and above the most exuberant, thrilling, grandiose quest to be on the board.

Thank you, Snail, for once more reviving this quest and allowing us to enjoy the story which we will all unfold, together. It is my sincerest hope we will make it through the four years or until we slip and end the career of Jonathan Wells

and thank you anon for playing. I hope you are enjoying the quest. The thing about birds: You know how QMs in general post pics related to character , places ...etc? I am pretty picky about it; unless the pic has EXACTLY what I want, I (or rather OP) won't post it. Since Walls of text are pretty boring, I went for birds instead. They are off-topic but they give a certain flavour to the quest. Birdposting ahoy.

>Burn the letter, don't attend the ball [ +1 Intrigue, +1 Career ]

It would be better if we can pack our cabinet full of loyalists and people more aligned to our goals

Plus, we can always turn on these ‘strays’ in the future if their demands become excessive.

So here is the thing, I am known for my tons of unfinished quests ( frozen civ, above and below, couple of fallout quests, XCOM,F.E.E.D ...etc) . I tend to get burned out by daily updates among other reasons like the rangeban which is still making me unable to post pics/start new threads/use cool fonts.

One of my latest quests (persona moonless, link: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Moonless) has been running for over a year. I decided to take a break from it last month posting on /qtg/ about which old quest of mine should I revive. It was either governor or F.E.E.D. The rest is history.

Honestly, I expected this quest to flop but I was proven wrong. Yes, I lost some of the playerbase (from 9 to ~5-6) , still, I am enjoying QMing this quest.

So, after some thinking and reconsideration, I have decided to return back to persona: moonless. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean I am abandoning Jonathan and co. ; I just can't run two quests at once, I tried once and It failed miserably.

I ask all of you anons to have patience. My new plan is to alternate between the two quests, one month for gov and the other for persona. Going for another gov thread is like backstabbing my ~1-3 players who endured 12 threads+ tons of hiatus. Of course, If SMT/Persona is your thing, I also welcome new players.

See you in a month anons, stay safe!

Thanks for the heads up, I appreciate it, especially because of the glut of QMs that burn out or are put off by lack of interest or realise they aren't cut out for running a quest and just flake without a word.

I like Persona but have no interest in a Persona quest, there have been a ton of them and I've never once participated in one.

+1 Intrigue (2) [Honest Aize]
+1 Career (-2) [ Under Investigation]

You wished the letter was speaking lies, slandering the good advisor and the pure-hearted legislator. It was bitter truth that was dripping from the stray's declaration of friendship. One is a glutton, corrupting everything he touches while the other is a noble butcher cleaving lives at a drop of a hat. The easterners have this idiom that says:

The one who withholds truth is a mute devil.

Are you that devil? Their deaths will certainly benefit you AND Arkuland in the near future but at what cost? Your piece of mind? The overwhelming guilt already festering inside your soul?

You had little choice other than sharing the letter's content with the fireplace. No one will know of your indirect involvement in the matter. The strays shall claim two lives for the sake of many. It is a sacrifice you are willing to take.

And so it happened, the mansion had nearly all of your cabinet save for Sir Noskk who was too busy tinkering with the reason-box of the clockwork soldiers. The slug donning eastern skin had a bloated belly full of wine and half-chewed meat while everyone were still having their first mouthful of food. His round face was turning blue, his eyes were bulging out as if he was getting choked by ghastly hands. Alas, Medehat was no more, his face buried in his own half digest vomit with little to no one lifting a finger to help him...

As for the prime legislator, She addressing other guests when the chains holding the chandelier suddenly snapped, hurling downwards at breakneck speed. Those Strays had underestimated your prime legislator, by all accounts, she should have been crushed and leveled with the floor. The Northerner leapt out of harm's way at the last possible second suffering only minor injuries.

Two 'accidents' occurring at the same time. How would the strays react? How would Miss Arudelle interpret these unfortunate events? She is far too cunning to blame the lord for a suspicious misfortune.

One thing you know for certain:

There will be hell to pay.
