An illustrated civilization quest.
Neolithic to bronze age technology.
Some magic/fantasy elements.
Updates once every 1-2 days.

You are Burnaburiash, shaman and leader of the village. Your people have been fled to the northern desert from the terrible army the Djenak Balai. Your village has a population of 50 now but may grow much larger over the course of the quest as more survivors flee to your village.

With a wave of migrants and a shortage of accommodation and food reserves you band all the villagers to work the long hours to get the job done. With loads of clay coming in daily and builders working on the new dormitory building all hours of daylight, the structure rises from the ground at tremendous speed.
Ever since the bandits raided your stockpile you've been juggling uncomfortably low food reserves. Unwilling to take unnecessary risks hunting, you use traders and the children. At your request, the children contribute to the work effort by foraging for the rest of the village. Meanwhile you send two men to travel to the Gemetis' capital Mokodou. With the coins gifted to you by the Uppulu chief, they purchase a cow, loading it with grain with what little money they had left. The fresh beef is a welcome change from lizard, and emu meat as far as you're concerned.
After a few laborious days, the villagers joyously completed the building in time for the migrants. With enough food to get them settled.
In the wake of all the hard labour, the villagers decide they're entitled to some indulgence. They're now doing the bare minimum of work and asking you to produce some amenities next. Although the newcomers haven't been working crunch the last few days from their perspective "if no one else is working hard, I don't have to either", you're not counting on them to pick of the slack.
Honestly, after all the conflict the last few months you wouldn't mind some opulence either. You lounge back in a cushion in the shade and think "what would be nice to have?"

The Giant Warthog that has made itself at home in your village is starting to become a point of contention. Some villagers want it gone. It eats, a LOT. It isn't stealing food from your stockpile, but it's still eating the local flora. Not just harvesting the fruits, but eating the entire plant. More and more plants in the immediate area are being devoured every day, and with winter coming in the yellow fruit bushes are no longer bearing fruit. Some other villagers love The Pig for some reason, considering it a bringer of good fortune and a ward against evil spirits.
You invite the Goat Herders' Chief over to ask him about it.
Uppulu Chief: "Ah yes, this great beast is known across the desert. We call him Tambo, they say in his wake comes a bountiful harvest."
Shala: "Probably because he eats all the competing plants and leaves a mountain of manure."
Uppulu Chief: "Do you not have Hodari in your homeland?"
You feel a sense of wistfulness. Indeed, there were once several giant venerable animals living in the forests of your homeland. You heard the Djenak devoured each one.
Burnaburiash: "We did. Magnificent creatures they were. They each had personalities, some could be quite dangerous."
Uppulu Chief: "Tambo is a gentle soul. He would never attack unprovoked, and will leave if you try to send him away. It is the great Thunder Bird and terrible serpent Grootslang you should beware."
Burnaburiash: "Thank you for your teaching, stay as out guest as long as you wish."

Burnaburiash: "The wheat looks beautiful. Ripe for harvest!"
Shala: "Hmm, it took a long time. Considering we planted it in Spring."
You nod thoughtfully.
Burnaburiash: "Yes, clearly the work of evil spirits. Casting bad magic on our crops."
Shala gives you an incredulous look.
Shala: "Right... This harvest won't do much to feed 50 people."
Burnaburiash: "A shame, but there was much to do! And little time to sow."
Shala: "Well, it might take some extra effort, but. I think we should just use this to bake something lavish as a treat, or brew beer. We could just eat it as bread, but it's not a lot of food for our current population."

(Couldn't finish the whole update, so here's a small update to tide you over till tomorrow.)

Although you had enough food to settle the new migrants, the village is consuming more than it's producing. You need to find a new food source. Especially since winter/Tambo are reducing your foraging rate.
While enjoying a dip in the water you think up a plan to resolve the issue.

You decide some games will be the best way to bring the villagers more variety in recreation. You gather up the villagers, and make the announcement.
Burnaburiash: "It is time for games! Forget the bricks! Put down the adzes! For the next few days we're focusing on making games! Go wild!"
Happy with your decision the villagers throw themselves into discussing which of your civilization's games to bring back first.
Using the resources, tools and buildings established so far, they end up crafting a nice variety of games.
Tannery: Balls made from tanned hide, stuffed with animal hair
Kiln/Clay Pit: Board games and their pieces sculpted from clay
Hunters' Spot: (The children having been playing with discarded knuckle bones since we first started hunting.)
Loom/Bowyer's Workshop: Archery Targets and training arrows
In just a few days, dozens of old games are made. Through your encouragement most of the focus goes to logic based and athletic games.

It's been a while since you last visited the spirit world. The pink flower is nice, but doesn't help you cross over at all. It was significantly easier when that evil spirit was stalking you, secretly helping you reach the other side.
Hani'ata has been trying to enter the spirit world for days now, without much luck. Looks like you will have to wait for auspicious circumstances, perform a large ritual, or get high as fuck if you want to enter the spirit world.
You visit the small temple and see the stone in the center is covered in wilted flowers.
Burnaburiash: "Hani'ata! How long have these dead plants been here!?"
Hani'ata: "I don't know. What does it matter?."
Burnaburiash: "That rock is sensitive to spirit magic, it's a way for the spirits to communicate with us. This likely means the plant sprites are upset!"
Hani'ata: "Ha! A threat? Empty basket. It takes much more upsetting before woodsies get aggressive."
Burnaburiash: "We are shaman Hani, we're supposed to resolve these issues *before* the spirits get aggressive. I must enter the spirit world."
Hani'ata: "How? I'm not feeling much spiritiness in the air."

Well judging how breathing air is an automatic body function and fishing out of the physical representation of one of our patron spirits isn't.
We've neglected to contact her for quite a while and we are supposed to keep the spirits balanced, we already have something going on with the Ritual Stone and bad plant vibes, upsetting the river spirit isn't a good idea IMO

A large ritual tomorrow! The vils eagerly listen as you elaborate on a whole day of no working, just feasting, playing, relaxing and at night: a ritualistic dance around a tremendous fire.
You end up personally bustling about preparing appropriate props for the ritual. Bowls of Ochre and Charcoal fresh from the new Wood Burner (You knew it would be a good idea) for body paint, big basket-fulls of the pink Mojo flower for its enticing smoke. You even carve out a new shaman mask for Hani'ata.
With your focus on the ritual you don't really have time to set up the fishing, you'd much rather wait till you discuss it with Bilya first anyway.

The following day is delightful. A small sport tournament to honour the spirits, children playing, everyone from the whole village socializing together.
Nabu-mu: "Are you sure everyone can eat as much as they want?"
You reassuredly slap him on the shoulder. "Of course!" you lie, "One little day of feasting won't do any harm."
As the night comes, you have the villagers decorate each other with the paints and charcoal. You gather them in a circle around the wood pile, and just as the sun disappears over the horizon... FWOOSH, the entire pile erupts in a pillar of fire. In every direction: awestruck gasps and fascinated stares. A dramatic display thanks to Hani'ata's fire magic.
The lighting of the flame signals the start of the ritual. All voices sing and a circle of dancing people rotates around the flame.
You can feel the spiritual magic waxing. It is almost time...

Your mind enters the spirit world easily. Hani'ata following soon after.
Burnaburiash: "Go listen to the plant sprites Hani, I entrust this to you."
Hani'ata: ".. Right. I can do this. I am Hani'ata."
You approach the river banks, to meet the spirit of the Bilya. The great serpent of flowing water elegantly slides around you.
Burnaburiash: "Greetings. Great spirit."
Bilya: "I loathe hideous things littered by the waterside. But your peoples' crops and buildings decorate my river banks well."
Burnaburiash: "I am glad their hard work pleases you."
Bilya: "I know you desire to fish my waters, you are welcome to. So long as you don't wipe out any species I will not be angered."
Burnaburiash: "The villagers will be grateful I'm sure."
Bilya: "You have dealt with the shades well enough, Burnaburiash. I approve. Ugly unnatural things should not exist in the world. I would like to know, what do you plan to do about those humans, the Djenak Balai?"

Okay the quick rundown is.
>The Djenak Balai is an army that worships the Djenak (an enormous evil spirit, kind of like Aku from samurai jack) like a god
>They cultivate dark spirits deliberately to use them as weapons in their army, to do this they cruelly torment people to create extreme and deep seated negative emotions/ideas in them.
>They themselves don't produce anything or have any workers, rather they conquer cities and villages and enslave the populations to feed them
>The Djenak directs them to enslave and conquer everything
>The low ranking soldiers believe that they when they die in battle, they "ascend" into dark spirits. They accept brutal physical punishment to ensure they become powerful evil spirits. High ranking sorcerers and leaders live fairly decadent and opulent lives and are entirely uninterested in this "reward".
>They do take people in at a young age, but will let anyone join if they pass the "murder your own brother" test
>>
>>4792692
>>4793424
>We will destroy the Djenak
Yup that clears up that conflict
>>
>>4793396
I understand where you're coming from, but these "people" are the same people that slaughtered and drove us from our lands, even then they weren't trying to do that, they enjoy killing and know it will lead to them becoming a physical monster, they enjoy receiving pain nearly as much as inflicting it from what I gather from Dols post below
>>4793424

>>4793015
Yeah keeping my vote the same, this post is mine so don't samefag that vote
>>
>>4793728
that doesn't mean we have to be happy about killing them.

>these "people"
yes, these are people who had their tribes destroyed and parents killed then tortured and indoctrinated until they become what they are today. We could end up fighting our old tribesmen.

From the spirits perspective it could look like a cycle of violence thing. If they are going to gift us powers to defeat the Djenak, They probably need to see that we wont misuse them as means for our own violent ends.
>>
>>4793916
The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing
>>
Burnaburiash: "We will destroy the Djenak!"
You speak with conviction, but in your mind you wonder if it's even possible for mere humans armed with spears and arrows to kill such a powerful Shade.
Bilya: "Bold! The best solution is the simplest one. With this "Djenak" slain, the Djenak Balai will be headless. I urge you to seek out other great spirits, they will likely share their magic with you for this cause. I shall instruct the smaller spirits to spread word of your courageous intent!"
Burnaburiash: "Wait! I cannot promise this ambition!"
Bilya: "Promise or not, the spirits of the desert will know this: Burnaburiash and her people are sworn enemies of the Djenak."
With a sense of vertigo you start to feel your grip on the spirit world slipping. The world fades to darkness as you plummet back into your physical body.

She folds her arms and raises her nose to the air.

The villagers are quickly getting to work to set up the fishing operation. With the fishing, hunting/trapping, and what little can still be foraged there should at least be an acceptable level of food at all times.
Soon after the fishermen start work, visitors arrive. A Gemeti merchant caravan has arrived at your village. A few draft animals and bronze clad guards park by the tannery and the merchant requests to speak with you.
When you approach he walks right up to you and begins talking business immediately.

Hani'ata: "I don't see YOU hauling huge slabs of clay."
Burnaburiash: "I'll give you a choice: get to work and start contributing under Bibi's supervision. OR go your own way, climb the mountain and receive the spirit's gift if you can. You will receive no help from us."
She balls her fists.
Hani'ata: "Fine, I WILL climb that mountain and show you I don't need ANYONE."
Burnaburiash: "We shall see."
Shortly after, you inform the rest of the village that Hani is to receive no assistance. Though you allow Bibi to give her a blanket to stop her from freezing.

Barley for Booze. After discussing things with the Gemeti merchant you decide selling alcohol is a good way to bring wealth to the village, and buying barley a good way to make it. With the population growing and currency coming in; the village will probably evolve from a commune to a local economy. You begin to wonder how taxes and corvee work, good thing you have Arwia for this stuff.
The merchant gives you another proposition:
Merchant: "Since you are short of grains to produce beer with, how would you like a loan? I could deliver you barley for free for the first 8 weeks. Then, after the first batch finishes, you pay us back! (with interest, haha)"

>"I agree, Arwia will negotiate the details"

Ah fuck. Can't wait to see the fallout

Don't agree to loan, just trade some leather for the barley. Since it's just a small test batch we don't need a dedicated hut.

Instead let's build a watch tower and set up some dedicated security / scouts.

You don't agree to the loan, but sell a few units of leather so get some barley to start with.
Merchant: "Selling leather? A girl like you should be wearing it. Ha! But yes. I accept your offer. We'll be back when your first batch is ready."

After the merchant caravan goes off on its way, you set the next priority to agriculture. One little wheat garden isn't nearly enough! After a small lottery, a few unlucky villagers are given sacks and shovels to distribute the manure.
Some more fortunate ones get to till some fresh farmland and sow fresh barley seeds.
Burnaburiash: "Can you sow this stuff in the winter?"
Shala: "Almost certainly. It seems very similar to our own native wheat and it never snows here."
Collecting seeds didn't spend any significant amount of the barley, what will you do with the rest?

Hani'ata spends the next few days attempting to climb the mountain with single-minded determination.
Though she returns to the base every time, through sheer stubbornness she is actually making progress, finding a path more skillfully each time. Nabu-mu tries to give her food against your orders but Hani'ata refuses.

As much as I'd love to wipe out a band of raiders, we frankly don't have the manpower to spare. We could send out Labashi and some of the others, but it'd cripple our production and security.
I'd also love to recruit him to get a trained warrior/thief, but he'd likely try to undermine us and recruit a few of our men into a suicide mission. If the Hunter(forget his name) and his team were around, i might place this man in his jurisdiction, but they aren't here.

Actually, Dolomite, do we know where the Hunter is right now? Could we point him in that direction to find strong people to join up with? Or are they deep in the south right now?

This.
I don't think the Belliscist called her, I genuinely think she heard the mountain. Both because of the challenge, and because the stalker needed to be far closer to call, close enough that the Bylia and Burnaburiash should have noticed its presence. But we should go look for her, and share some shaman-motherly advice and explanation. We need to teach her some important lessons, but at the same time we can't just abuse her into falling into evil spirit's hands.

We shouldn't go back on our decision to make her go at it alone(at least the belliscist taught us an important lesson of being committed to our actions). But she deserves to know why we made that call. Why we were disappointed that the entire village helped her, yet she didn't do what they needed from her. She probably forgot her new mask too.

And, in classic loop-hole wise monk fashion, bring some food to share with her if she is resting or at the top. Also a tiny bit of medicine/bandages. We only said she isn't allowed to receive help while climbing, and while we are talking with her, she isn't actively climbing now is she.

You reserve the barley for brewing. Telling the others it's not to be eaten except in emergency.
With only Simbar and his homemade kit working, your bottleneck is production not materials. He begins work making another vessel to brew in.
The new barley farms are done and the manure is distributed around. You continue to plan expansion, perhaps some science/technology?

You begin to worry about Hani. What if she's hurt? Or run afoul some evil spirit? The Bellecist is still lurking out there, and you cringe at the idea of him trying to sell his creepy spells to her. "You're just worrying", you tell yourself. She's probably fine. Buuuuuuuuut just in case, you start packing some supplies: food, waterskins, rope, and a bit of medicine.
You find the start of Hani's trail and look up at the foreboding mountain. If Hani'ata climbed very high it will be difficult to reach her, she's been practicing for days and this is only your first attempt.
A snort of hot air against your back interrupts your train of thought. Turning you see the giant warthog Tambo.
Burnaburiash: "Tambo! Could it be you wish to help?"
The pig gently lies down on its belly. You slowly reach out and firmly grab the Hodari's mane, testing his reaction. He remains calm and you hoist yourself on his back. He stands, and you find yourself seated high in the air.
Burnaburiash: "Thank you, noble Tambo."
Tambo puts his snout to the ground. Sniffs around for a little and begins trotting up the mountain. He carries you far, but eventually the slope become a little too steep. The pig settles down to the ground and you slide yourself off his back. The rest is up to you.
Fresh from having skipped most of the hike, you begin your ascent to the highest point. You take it slow, taking time to pick the most gentle paths. Finally you reach a plateau of earth, just shy of the tip top of the mountain. 10 metres and practically vertical on every side. Slowly you circle the pillar, pick the best spot, and climb...
>>
Upon the peak you see Hani'ata, eyes closed, lying on her back on the rocky floor. She looks rough, but unhurt. You sense the lingering presence of spiritual energy all around.
Your cool shadow falls on her as you walk up to her side.
Without opening her eyes she speaks.
Hani'ata: "Told you I could do it."
You sit down next to her.
Burnaburiash: "Yes, I underestimated you Hani."
She twists to her side and pushes herself upright. You toss a fruit into her lap, and start unpacking some water, cloth and Bittee paste.
Hani'ata: "Hmm? I thought I wasn't getting any help."
Buranburiash: "Only while you were climbing, the climb is finished."
Hani'ata: "heh, lucky for me."
Burnaburiash: "Did you learn anything on your way? Some words of wisdom from the Mountain spirit?"
Hani'ata: "When I reached the top ALL by myself it was thrilling, but... lonely. Ever since I came here you're always nagging and telling me off."
Burnaburiash: "Watch it Hani."
Hani'ata: "But after I went on my own for some reason I MISSED you and your complaining. Uh.. I'm trying to say: I can make it on my own, but why would I want to? If you'll let me; I want to join your team again. This time for real. I promise."
You reach into your pack and pull out one last item, the mask you made for her for the ritual.
Burnaburiash: "Here, this is yours."

Pic related, for the entire little feels good journey.
Tambo a friend.

Husbandry would be solid for the wild dogs. Man's best friend could be great for hunting, security, and other general purposes that dogs fulfill. Camels could be nice if we wanted to get some pack animals, chariots, or otherwise. But I don't think we really have the land for those kinds of grazing needs. Plus we seem to be a more magic-archery focused tribe, to contrast the bronze kingdom's heavy infantry and the Sand Raider's cavalry. So I'll go with the option more fitting our Plant Spirits and river valley.
>Botany
Logically, and planning wise, I have to agree with the majority that Dig is a great option. But Hani'ata just seems like the kind of girl that'd want to stomp on the earth, erect a suit of stone around her, and headbutt and burninate people into submission. Either way, Water-Plant shaman and Fire-Mountain shaman is a nice combo.

Damkina is a Glassworker, Gandu is a smith. Simbar is a brewer and his wife Bibi is a fletcher/bowmaker.

The Dig spell temporarily excavates a 1x1 tile of earth. Fast enough to catch a moving target, but too slowly to harm it from falling. It can be used both to make pits and to dig tunnels. Any natural earth including very dense rock is affected, but man-made objects made from the exact same material are unaffected. Buildings do not prevent the earth beneath them from being excavated. The holes will slowly fill in over time.

This is a pretty neat idea, and would probably do well for us during the wetter periods of the year with more plant life. Pottery in the summer and textiles in the winter. Would pull us a little away from smiting or crafting, and make us more of an artisan village in the river valley. Does sound nice.
That amount of wealth coming from our village is going to make us prime raiding candidates though.
We also only have one source of dye right now. Pink from the flowers.

>>4810245
I'm honestly a bit torn. I'd love to find more plants, and possibly bring them here. Both to give the plant spirits new friends, and to also possibly unlock more dye types if we go the textile route. On the other hand, we have a whole bunch of other useful properties from glue to paper to tea to drugs.
Either way we go, I'd rather unlock new plants, or research the ones we have right now. Not selectively breed any yet.

Weapons I guess we could use more of, but we have no source of metal, and we were able to arm the entire village to fight the Djenak Balai, so we aren't pressed for them.
We aren't really hunting enough in either quantity or size to have a solid Leather industry. Wait, scratch that, we do have that whole tannery that I somehow completely overlooked. And while we are good on weapons, we are lacking in terms of shields and armor. Textile or leather would probably work for that, since multiple types of shields exist.

Your argument is sound and I appreciate your thought process, in light of finding that picture I agree we should diversify what we have in the valley and send Shala to go foraging. My logic for if we get a shit ton of new wealth from trading dye/textiles is we would be able to hire mercs and/or someone to train a group of people who can protect the village better. I am also just super pumped at the thought of our own cultural clothing and art that would most certainly come from it, as the village gets bigger we are going to need more than just rags for everyone to wear, and with real culture and art we will have a genuine foothold in the world, plus colorful shaman masks for Burni and Hani!!

A bit split between focusing on leather-working or textiles you ultimately go with textiles after some romantic ideas of making a colourful clothing industry.
The new workers get to work in the loom, churning out clothes, ropes, and bags.
Aralu: "I appreciate all the extra help Burni, but we are working with bark and river reeds. At this pace we will run out of materials eventually."
Burnaburiash: "What do you need to keep the Loom in flight?"
Aralu: "Any plant that can be processed into fabric. Flax, or cotton would be wonderful."
Burnaburiash: "Hmm, what about leather?."
Aralu: "We sold the stockpile for barley and there's not enough new leather being made to keep up."
Enki: "I have an idea girls. Why not just find an animal that can be sheared?"
Burnaburiash: "Like what? Have you spotted anything woolie?"
Enki: "No, but take the wild camels for example. The Ishtar use camelhair as their main fabric."
Kuri: "What about the giant spiders! We could MASH them and take their silk."
Burnaburiash: "What!? What giant spiders?"
Enki: "Are you making things up child?"
Kuri: "It's not made up! Ira and me found a sandy cave with huge spiderwebs. We didn't go in because it's scary. But it's probably full of gigantic spiders, just like the giant scorpions."

The nut tree is very enticing. Nuts are good nutrition, and wood is rather valuable out here in the desert. Dense wood might be extra nice as a building material. And it's shape makes it look like it'll be good for surviving with little water out in the dryer parts of our village.

>>4816406

The spiders shy from the edges, unwilling to brave the flames to attack. They creep backwards into the shadows.

Fairly early in the morning the scouting team you sent to investigate the spider caves returns. All alive, but with skin reddened from light burns. An unconscious Hani'ata sleeps on Enki's back.
Burnaburiash: "Dreadful! Come this way everyone, I will treat your burns."
You lie them all down in a hut while some medicine is fetched for you. You use up all the stores of Bitee paste slathering it on their skin. Then bandage the injuries with cloth. In addition to the burns some were bitten and are suffering from a venom that painfully cramps the muscles.
Enki describes the spiders to you as you apply a cold flannel to his forehead.
Enki: "Horrible creatures. They come out at night. The scorpions avoid us, but these spiders HUNT us. They aren't powerful, but facing a swarm from all sides under cover of darkness? Nightmarish. Hani'ata spent all night protecting us with that flame wall."
Burnaburiash: "Forgive me, It's my fault you were all subjected to this. I won't send you there again."
Enki: "I. Am not afraid. We know them now. You should commit to harvesting their precious silk."
Burnaburiash: "You believe so?"
Enki: "Namtar would not back down."

After the doctoring is done it seems like they will all fully recover. The venom appears to be healing. Now you think to yourself if messing with the spiders is really worth it?

I dunno man, pretty hard to ride a horse through a wall of sandbags with a ditch full of spikes in front of it
>>
Question: would we be harvesting their silk by cutting down the webs? Or do we need to kill the spider to get it?

Because I'm wondering if we can capture a few and farm them for silk. If that wouldn't anger any spirits of course

>Further study

>>4821837
A ditch of spikes alone will work just as well.
>>
>>4821850
A ditch with a wall on the far side is significantly harder to jump.

I don't want to get into an argument over this, I'm just saying we can build shit with sandbags as a temporary interim solution while we don't have any clay coming in for bricks etc
>>
>>4821825
>Study Further
Building a fortified base now would just mean they have to fend off horrified spider waves every night.

Also to go with >>4821846, if we can get a renewable or at least somewhat harvestable way to get the silk, that is much better than killing them all and running out after one batch.
>>
>>4821725
>>4821740
At risk of making more of an arguement, sandbags also have a good use as river bank reinforcement, in the situation where a river floods. Which we may have to prepare for if the rainy season gets particularly bad here. We've omly just started the winter/rainy season, so we aren't familiar with the natural cycles here.
Might be worth asking the goat herders about.

My fear is that there is a mom sized spider in that cave with Tambo teir intelligence. So I don't want to over do anything.

Let's gather up some spider web from the edge of the cave and also the spider corpses to see what can be harvested for weaving. Lastly, let's set a spider cage trap and see if we can catch one alive, our artificer can help with that. Everything should be done in the light of day.

Through a pair of heavy fur curtains you enter a cave lit by oil lamp.
Burnaburiash: "Show me the creature."
Two men pull a cloth revealing a wooden cage. Inside is a live giant spider, standing very still.
Ishum: "Easy to catch. Bait a trap and come back the next day."
Burnaburiash: "Clever. I'm impressed by your quick work Ishum. Do you think you could capture more like this?"
Ishum: "Easily. As long as you provide me with the material to make the traps I can capture as many as these brainless spiders as you want."
Labashi gestures to a large stone slab with a dissected spider on top. Nasty blue blood stains the rock.
Labashi: "We cut open one of them as you asked. We managed to pull usable spider silk from its innards."
Burnaburiash: "Excellent! Did you manage to retrieve some from the lair?"
Ishum: "Yes. As long as we don't go too deep. We can collect web during the day time safely. Unfortunately it's a long walk. And if we camp outside the spiders will attack at night."
Burnaburiash: "I see. A simple hut like we have for the clay pit won't be enough."
Labashi: "Using some of the web we collected, Aralu made this:"
He holds out a piece of soft shiny white silk. It feels cool and pleasantly soft in your hands.

If we were to trade alcohol for bronze could we upgrade our weapons and armour? I'm thinking forward to when business is booming and we are a target for raiders

Or we could buy some clay and make bricks for fortifications then hire mercs to guard the village later on?

What does everyone else think?
>>
>>4828358
Wouldn't it make sense to only capture males? We could capture a pregnant female by mistake. Nature uuuuh finds a way
>>
>>4828359
I also think the bronze trade is the way to go, either for armor or weapons.

>>4828540
I don't know much about spider biology, but don't they lay eggs upon fertilization?
As long as we only capture females, it really shouldn't be a problem.
>>
>>4828359
Clay I feel like we could get faster and more conveniently from our goat herder neighbors, than a long caravan more at risk for raiding. Plus we only need some until the summer season roles around again.
Barley might be worth getting in small amounts, to supplement the wheat and farms for brewing. Salt too if we want to expand our meat storage capabilities.

Bronze would probably be a good idea, though we'll need to make sure our forge is capable of working it. Some armor and shields (bronze or lower tier shields should be good, either way) would be our best initial things for defense. We've got quiet a bit of weapons already. Other than that, is making some fortifications/watch towers and perhaps training a few men for guard duty.
Making some bronze arrows or lead shot for the slingers could do wonders considering that's been one of our major offensive tools.

Why would spiders that travel to hunt in the night (like a wolf spider) weave webs in the first place? These are unusual creatures so I think it would be best not to think about it TOO much.

Maybe instead we use the second batch of alcohol and prepare a joint feast/celebration between our two villages? Or just gift them some of the finished spiderweb clothing when we get that up and running.

You establish an ongoing trade deal to sell 2 units of beer for 3 units of barley and 1 unit of bronze.
With this you now have more than enough grain income to keep Simbar brewing full time. Surplus barley is filling your food reserves which are now quite plentiful.

With the Spider Farm: The Loom is now producing silk fabric and clothing.

Some of the villagers are trading "their" items with the Gemeti merchants. Coinage and currency is leaking into the village and with it a local economy is emerging.
The villagers' motivation to work for the sake of practical matters of comfort and survival is waning as the infrastructure and population increases.
Arwia: "We are growing from a small collectivist village to one with a real economy."

Are we mass producing spidersilk to the point that every villager is wearing silk or is it a luxury good that we produce in small quantities?

Casual system, we can start thinking about CASH MONEY when people start complaining that they "do more" then other villagers.

At best, I can think that maybe we could only take a 90% cut of everything produced by SKILLED labour and let the artisans keep 10% of their toil to do with as they wish. But once we start on this road its going to become a slope very quickly.

Hmmm the problem is he is an artisan so he has big value, as the village expands its going to be really hard to assert authority on everyone and factions are going to form. This dude is going to have influence over anyone that drinks fire water. Right now this beer production is what we need to get the metals industry off the ground.

I think a warning is pointless as I'm 100% sure they will do it again. its better to set some better rules for the future. Let Simbar himself come up with what he thinks is "fair", and come back to you. Since he has broken your rule he clearly doesn't agree with how we have set things up. Then after a back and forth with Simbar we can decide if even having a firewater industry is worth it in the long run. Better now then in the future when its a bedrock industry we cant do without.

>let him off with a warning
Ultimately it is his alcohol, so we really shouldn't do anything to him, just remind him we really need to use it for trade, we already made a deal, and we will be able to brew another batch in the future

its the villages barley that he is using, he didn't cultivate it himself

Burnaburiash: "I'll let you off easy THIS time. Steal from the village again, and I'll curse you!"
Man: "C-curse?!"
Simbar: "Foo! Thunderbolts! I made it. It's only fair I get a drink or three."
Burnaburiash: "You, Arwia and I will discuss what's fair and amend the rules. But I said no drinking until the festival! DON'T ignore my direct orders again."
Simbar: "...Aye. Burnaburiash. You're the chief."

Uppulu tribes people start streaming in before it's even midday. Over time dozens arrive.
You crack out the GAMES and people quickly take to the oval to play ball.
The energetic sound of DRUMS echoes across the village.
Lots of woven mats from the LOOM are placed around for people to lounge on.
Plentiful portions of FRUITS, BARLEY, and SMOKED FISH and MEAT are available.
Two (mostly full) large clay urns of tasty tasty BEER stand ready to be opened at sunset.
A couple of unlucky men were chosen to take turns GUARDING, in case of another opportunistic attack.
After Nebo's party returns, large hunks of BIG GAME are being slow roasted over open flames.
The Uppulu chief arrives in the afternoon hauling a load of cheese and live goats.
The night comes and the beer urns open, dotted CHARCOAL torches light up the village. With the effects of the booze and pink flower, and all these people dancing to the drum beat you feel momentous spiritual energy. Party time.

(That's the last full update ITT, and the end of the first in-quest year. Might take a break for a bit before the next thread. Thanks for your participation!)

PS: Last night I found out about a free 2D Orthographic Bronze Age RTS called Fertile Crescent, check it out for more ancient era pixel content!)

Give me the mystery box character OP, also the long haired blonde male.

Thanks for the thread, QM. Very fun as always. Take a break, and hope work goes well for you. I'll let the .io game sustain me until the next thread.

>[What do? Talk to which character?]
Might be fun to hit up some of the people we don't talk to as much. And a few of our tried and true friends.
Tambo is a fun idea, anon, I support. Chief of the Goat Herders, if for no other reason than for mutual respect of chiefs. Labashi, Nebo, and Arwia as the main gang. Gandu we haven't really had a chance to talk with. Aruru, just because I find those interactions personally amusing.

If we want to be a bit more proactive, now might be a good time to pop in and talk with the plant spirits. Maybe while we also visit Tambo's spirit form. Make sure the plants are happy with our fertilizer efforts and new farms.

>Labashi
Labashi: "3 years ago I was a potter in a forest village. I would never have dreamed I would assassinate a wizard in a faraway desert. Fate is truly whimsical."
Burnaburiash: "It was your choices that truly lead you here. You could have been a captive, a freedom fighter like Namtar, or perhaps some other settlement our people made elsewhere."
Labashi: "Hmm I had not fully considered the different stories of all who survived the Djenak. Thousands lived in Tripoda, and more in the villages. There must be many more of us still out there."

Arwia: "I am so proud to see the village flourish! As more of our scattered people learn of this settlement, and Namtar frees more captives our population will rise!"
Burnaburiash: "It's good you're excited. Many people are still sore we have been driven from our home to this wasteland."
Arwia: "I too grieve for our lost home Burni, but my eyes are focused on the tomorrow! The old ways are no more. We can build a new era!"

And of course the most important character:
>Tambo

You gently touch your palm to Tambo and seemlessly drift to the spirit world.
Just as you expected, Tambo has a spirit form as well. All Hodari seem to have the ability. His spiritual projection looks back at yours.
Even in this world he can't communicate with language. You understand different creatures have different kinds of cleverness.
Though it's somewhat difficult to describe you consider Tambo to have an "understanding" intelligence, unlike the giant scorpions' "devious" intelligence.
Although he can't speak, you believe you can exchange glimpses into each others' memory. This way you could "ask" about certain things.

Thought this was over for the thread. You are spoiling us, Dolo-senpai.

>Labashi: Promote and Flirt
Potter by day, wizard assassinator by night. The question is what promotion path would he get?
>Aruru: Chit-chat
Kek. Tempted to ask for opinion, at expense of Burna's sanity.
>Badru: Predictions?
Friendship is more powerful than any army.
>Nebo: Chit-chat
Nephew seems a tad headstrong, must run in the family. At least he's putting his money where his mouth is, and isn't all bluster.
>Arwia:chit-chat
We already share lots of predictions and opinions back and forth with her during work, would be nice to just chat with her.
>Gandu: Backstory
He's from the most recent group of migrants. Would be nice to hear what's going on back in the homeland. And to hear more about him and his art.
>Mystery box: Pic related.
With that wondrous metal, we will be unstopable!
>Tambo: Hodari, and ask him how his day is
Tambo!

Can we also talk to Hani? Haven't heard much since the mountain
