However, you still manage to do what you do best. The first bogey you evade is with a series of mad barrel rolls, unpredictable and agile. He zooms past you. Then his buddies come in. They are in a triangular assault, and you know the best way is to get inside or around their formation. With a flick of the stick, you bolt up, and they follow. Smiling, you cut back, opening fire as one plane falls for it. 'thudthudthud'Hit! The bogey wildly veers away in panic as the cannon impacts him, likely as much from shock as real damage. The two remaining bogeys move to engage you from opposite sides, and you think fast. Shrugging, you bank on your rolls again, choosing one Fonck and doing a roll over him as he charges, the unorthodox assault causing the two to break away for fear of mauling each other. They then break off and rejoin their fellows a bit away. The leader, whose plane is painted half indigo, spins for some reason. Then the radio buzzes, general. *Hahah. This is good luck for us! The radio suddenly shuts off, and you find yourself in a fight for survival once more. Looking around, you had to try and draw the Merovians off from this area. He did try. 'Tatatataatatata!' Go the machine guns of the enemy craft as you fly about. Most you manage to dodge, the Udet's speed and your own reflexes proving a good match for the enemy numbers. Then you see smoke in the corner of your eye, smoke moving towards you. For a moment, you think the Fonck you'd raked with the cannon is making a new go at you, before a sharp realization. "Crow! Stay out of this damnit! I told you to let me handle it!", you bark. This was madness. His Z1 wasn't a fighter to begin with, much less in it's current state! >>4824225>It packs a hell of a punch. But that ammo shortage hurts Dmitri. Can't you up it?You rub the back of your neck. The thing had its advantages sure, but also its drawbacks. If you were being honest you probably preferred the machine guns if only for the fact they were less likely to go dry on you in a long fight. "Well...the thing sure packs a hell of a punch. That much is for sure", you say. Dmitri gives you a toothy smile and nods his head. "Da da. It delivers quite the blow! Those rounds? I adapted them from anti tank rifle bullets! Well, me and the boys. Dmitri, he has tried to tell the Supply Ministry--"He catches on that you aren't completely enamored, and scratches his chin. "Alright. What is problem? It did not jam again did it? Many apologies if so!"You wave him off. "Nah, nothing like that. It's the ammo storage. Awfully light don't you think? I nearly ran dry during my fight. Doesn't really matter how hard it hits if there's nothing to shoot out, right?", you say. Dmitri nods with a deep sigh. "My young friend, you have, how do you say, hit hammer on nail, da!", he states. "This ammo issue, it is difficult. Only so much room to work with. Too many and balance of machine is affected. Danger of a hit cooking off. Too few..."He shrugs. "Well, you're a smart guy Dmitri. I'm sure you'll figure out something. How about we put the Mg's back though, huh?", you ask. He nods in good spirits. "Da da. It will be done. You have good day!", he says, before returning to his duties. A group of crew starts to take your plane around. You hear a voice clear behind you, and turn about. "I see Dmitri had you testing his toys!", Braun says with a smile. There is a bandage wrapped about his head, but the small bloodstain doesn't seem to serious. You nod. "It's a strong weapon. Not too sure he's fully realised the design though. Storage issues, apparently", you say. "Hah!", Luigi laughs. "My friend, if Luigi Pesani had his choice, he would go to Dimitri and ask for an even bigger one! Haha!"Sergei rolls his eyes. "Ahhh yes. The amount of havoc a big ale could wreak with an ordinance version. It tickles the mind it does", he says drily. "Friend Sergei, my mind is not ticklish!"".....right", Braun breaks in. "We should probably report to Ernst. He'll wanna hear this from our own lips. With the installations destroyed, he'll wanna proceed as soon as feasibly possible."You nod. "Yeh. The airbase thing right?", you ask. "Probably gonna be a rough one."Sergei scoffs. "Rougher for them. We will bury them.""Uhuh. Right, tough guy", Braun smiles. "Let's be about it then."----Inside the HQ, a few of the familiar faces give your team congratulations. Not that you feel particularly celebratory right now...but still. As you near Ernst's office, Braun stops. "Sergei, Luigi, how about you go ahead in? We'll just be a second", Braun says. Sergei looks curiously at you, but you just shrug.
>>4824426"Hmph. Don't be long", Sergei says after a moment. "Ernst's charming self is too much for me. Luigi, come.""Si", the big man says, following after. They keep on down the hall. Braun turns to you, before placing a hand on your shoulder. He rubs the back of his neck. "Rook...this business, with Crow 1. I know you didn't know him well, but I know the feeling. Well. Too well...actually..", he says, looking over your shoulder at the wall. "Sir...you really don't..""Heh. I'm not much of a confidante I suppose. I just want you to know it isn't your fault. These things happen, and..."--->I don't need to be coddled. This is a war. People die. >It's just...I know there is something I could have done sir. I'm just not sure what...>......>write in
>>4824454>......Let him speak. We have never lost a comrade before.
>>4824599>.....You just stay quiet. It's a bit hard to put your swirl of feelings into exact words right now. Guilt? Anger? Some sadness mixed in there? A bit of it all? You hear Braun sigh. "It's just one of those things, Stanislaw. It comes with the job...but...", he stops, and you feel his grip tighten. "Sir?", you ask. "It doesn't make it any easier. It should never BE easy. Watching a friend die. Too much of that nowadays. You stop feeling for the dead though, and you stop feeling for anything. That can lead...to bad places", he says. You raise a brow. "What's that supposed to mean sir?", you ask. He gives you a sad smile. "Let's just say you need to strike a balance. You care too little, you become cold, Rook. That's no way to live. Care too much..can't let things go...", he turns his eyes towards the Flight Controller's door. Ernst? What did Ernst have to do--"The people in Rosenberg, they think it's one big glorious display of patriotism. Crow won't ever be buried. He won't go home. But his widow will get a medal, so that makes it fine, I guess....", he says thinly. You sense a whole lot of bitterness. "At least he died fighting sir. He tried to help me out. Plus the mission...he'll be a hero once the papers get word", you state. Braun releases your shoulder, before adjusting his glasses. "Yeh", he says shortly. "Yeh. Whole lotta heroes these days Rook. Now come on, let's get back to work, eh?"His sudden shift in tone catches you a bit off guard. But you shrug it off as Braun just being tactful. He probably didn't want to unload his own issues on you. For a moment, you nearly pry into his past again, but seeing as he shot you down last time, you don't see any point. And, with that awkward ending, the two of you make your way into the office.----."---ull panic. It's beautiful. I've flights going for bridges and roads almost hourly now. It's beautiful, they are blind and deaf and they know it", Ernst finishes. Chimera Flight had gathered around Ernst's desk, as the blonde man worked with Ingrid to map out various attack zones. "Excellent work everyone!", Ingrid beams. "You were really on the ball this time! N-not to say you aren't usually, it's just um, just that this time you were part--"Ernst raises a hand. "As she was saying, good job. For minimal losses you have severed the coordination between the Huffendor and Lothren. They will be down to roads and birds now...", he veers off, taking a smoke. "Tell me then, Flight Controller...", Luigi starts, a wide grin under his shades. "When do you unleash us to strike the killing blow! Luigi Pesani shall carve his name into history in that valley!"As if to emphasize, he thuds his chest mightily, and Ernst glances up from the map, tapping his cigarette. He smirks.
>>4824748Nothing so fun for the moment. As it happens I'm planning on catching some beauty sleep. You don't get this handsome by rushing through life...", he ends with a big yawn as if to emphasize. Ah, good old Ernst. Lazy little sh-"Aren't you the one who said we had to hurry the plan along?!", Sergei growls. "You can't just nap--"Ingrid waves her hands wildly. "W-What the Flight Controller means is that he has been working very hard! You shouldn't be so rude!", she protests. She gets a surprising mix of defiance and nervousness on her face. Sergei is taken aback visibly, and to your intense shock doesn't fire back. Ingrid is still puffed up, like some kind of angry poodle. But no. Instead he simply shrugs and let's it go. "Nyet. Forget I said anything."Ernst clears his throat, though there is a look of vague amusement on his face. "Right. Now then, rest assured you will.be the first I tell when we launch phase two. I have some final preparations to make. Last minute updates and the like. Take it easy till then. I can't have you all keeling over and ruining my master plan...", he leans back, cigarette in mouth. "Riiiiight", Braun says. "Well, Master Planner, if that's all..."Ernst gets a frown on his face. "It is..but...come by here again later. Say around midnight? It seems the moths are back. And worse than we thought"The comment is so random and bizarre that you almost chalk it up as one of your boss's eccentricities. But Braun gets a rather serious look behind his glasses. "How bad 'worse'? ", he asks softly. "Bad. Alright then, off you go. Stay sharp out there. I need you to not die!", he says cheerfully. You all salute. "Yessir!"---Once you exit the building, you realize how late it is. Not quite night yet, but that pretty pink sky above sure is telling. So is the exhaustion. It had been a rather emotionally taxing mission, and that had translated to physical stress. Tacking on a forced Itch didn't help that. Luigi starts bellowing a big old belly laugh the minute the doors shut behind you. "Ahahaha!", he laughs. "The little bird, she showed you, didn't she friend Sergei! Hah!"The Count narrows his eyes. "I'll have you know there were any number of responses I had in mind. I was simply caught off guard by her...outburst. Besides, I do not fight with women, it is unseemly for a gentleman", he sniffs. "Uhuh", Braun says. "You poked her Ernst.""The man deserves more than a poke"---->I've been curious actually. Captain, you've known them both a while. Are they like a Thing? Or what? >Soooo, Cap'n. "Sure thing sir! So what's the--""Nono. Not here...", he looks around before gesturing towards an overhang that clouds the ground in shadow. It's fairly out of the way. "Hah! Stealth!", Luigi says loudly."Da, nothing suspicious about openly plotting in the shadows...in broad daylight..brilliant plan, Braun", Sergei remarks. Braun shrugs. "Well if you don't wanna know--"You shake your head. "Ignore him", you say. "We wanna know!"You shoot Sergei a sour glance, but he just mutters to himself. Braun nods with a smirk. "Thought so. Follow me", he mutters. You and the rest of your team set off as nonchalantly as possible across the Airfield. Soon enough you reach your destination. Braun leans against the wall as he cleans his glasses. "Alright, enough dramatics", Sergei says. "Let us hear this and be done.""Alright...", Braun starts. "As you are aware, the brass is convinced there is a rather well placed spy in our ranks. You'll all remember how the Merovians read our patrols minute for minute. And managed to nearly take out Baldir doing so."You nod. "Right. So some new info came up?", you ask curiously. Braun nods, and gets a serious look. "Oh yeah. 'Well Placed' may be too lenient a term. It happened again. Not just in the air either. Merovian forces have begun a second branch of their general offensive. They've stormed fortifications at Hachendell and Jezzeberg", he says, grimly. The gears in your head turn a second. Then it hits you. You'd seen them on that map! "But those are towns along one of the old supply routes! We need them to keep Lothren cut off!", you say. The hell? "It gets worse. Nobody saw them fucking coming. Total intelligence breakdown, and under the circumstances, it's being kept as quiet as possible. We have to assume worst. The Traitor is someone high up. High up enough to be able to supremely fuck us over, and not get caught while doing so. It's one hell of a pickle, I'll say that", he finishes. "And the plebian signal speech you used back in the office?", Sergei asks. "I trust that was related to this dire news?"Braun nods. "Behind the scenes, me and Ernst have been working with Pappen to try and put together a working picture. The guy and his 'Hats are pieces of work, but they are smarter than they look. I have to imagine something came up. Creator, and here I thought it couldn't get any worse..."An eerie silence settles around you all, before Luigi let's out a roar of outrage. "Baaah! When you find this man, my Captain, you point him to Luigi Pesani! I shall crush him like a tiny--"
>>4825522You throw a hand onto Luigi's arm. "Whoa whoa!", you say. "Ease up there big fellow. You're gonna pop an artery. Geez."After a few seconds, Luigi just breathes."Apologies my friends. But it makes me very angry! Many good men have died because of this traitor! Unforgivable!", he shouts. You can agree you guess. But Luigi looks fit to strangle someone. "Hey I'm angry too Luigi", Braun says. "But there's only so much we can do. Whoever it is, they're getting brazen. Eventually they are gonna fuck up, and then...""Bang", Sergei states. A grim smile decorates his face. Creepy. But ok. "Bang", Braun nods. "Now, I've got some bases to cover around here. Captain business. I'll keep you updated on the spy thing, assuming Ernst isn't overreacting.""Could he be?", you ask. "Ernst is a lot of things. But not a spaz. Still, I better be going. You lot take care", the Captain says, before walking off. Behind you, Luigi clenches a fist. "I must hit something. To the gym with me!", Luigi states. With nary a goodbye, he begins to walk off as well. Ah well, let the big guy punch it out you guess. "Well Sergei, I guess that leaves you and-Sergei?", you ask, looking around. But the Strelkayan is nowhere to be seen. Huh. A goodbye would have been nice, but you suppose he needs his alone time. Sergei is not exactly a hugger, as you've found. Shrugging, you decide to turn in. Not much else to do. And you need the rest. Mind made up, you make your way to your barracks...---You occupy yourself with your thoughts as you march on down to your...room?"Hey, Stanislaw right?", a janitor asks, stopping you in the hall. You don't recognize him. But you guess the place could use a touching up every now and then. You nod, stopping. "That's me....Mr..."He waves you off. "Oh nono. I'm just a fan you see. Heard about that mission earlier! Good job!", the janitor says, leaning on his broom. You feel a bit of pride swell up. "Oh yeah? Well hey, nice to meet you to!", you say. Wow, your first real fan! "Hey, you keep up the good work ok?", the man says, gathering his bucket up. "I've gotta head out, but you're room is nice and spiffy!"You wave as he leaves. Huh, what a swell guy!Continuing down the hall, you reach your door at last, and open it. You head inside to admire the clean up, and.......And your eyes are instantly drawn to the envelope on your desk. You blink. Cautiously, you pick the thing up. It's clearly high quality, with little frills and a big fancy seal made of wax. They had used gold, and the mark was a big, stylized 'B'. Well this was curious. You had gotten mail before. Letters from Anna or Dad, but they had always been inspected first, on entry. And so had your replies. That had been annoying at first, but Braun had assured you it was standard procedure. This though was unbroken and it had been left in your room...--->Well you kind of have to open it. Let's see what's inside!>Turn this in to security.
>>4825570>Well you kind of have to open it. Let's see what's inside!
>>4825679>Well you kind of have to open it. Let's see what's inside!Well, you could hardly NOT read the mysterious letter. Especially with that fancy old seal fixing it. Where would your sense of adventure be! With that decided, you break open the seal...And there are two letters! Well one isn't really a letter, so you set it aside for now. The other though...you look it over. 'Dear Stanislaw. I do hope you remember me, Helena Bormann? First, I only think it proper I should thank you again for rescuing me from those B--a-*st***-'You snort as you realize what she had scribbled out. And you keep reading. '--Those Heathens. In any case, congratulations on your success! I had a feeling you would do well. People are starting to notice you. Then again, with that paint job, who couldn't! Also, I do hope you do not mind, but I've taken it upon myself to patronize you to my Uncle. He isn't the easiest man to sway, but I think he is impressed. Or, well, perhaps almost impressed! At the very least I'm sure you could make a wonderful impression. He is a very important man as you know, and likely,(between friends), to be more important soon! Very hush hush that. To get to the point though, there will be a upcoming Gala of sorts. Held at Castle Zelger, date included below. All manner of notables will be present, dignitaries, soldiers, etc. But for some reason, not the Sturmwing's up and comer! I did some digging, and it would seem your team was uninvited by that fat...man. You know him. I worked my magic though. Included is an invitation to the Gala. Do not feel obligated to attend, although I am sure you deserve a break. My Uncle and I will be in attendance, so you can take the chance to get on my Uncle's good side! Bring your best uniform! Stay safe until then. --Helena B. You lay the letter down. Huh. Well it was nice to hear from Helena again, you guess. A bit weird, being out of the Blue like this. But you'd take it. Then your frown. Hoffman. "The Fat Man" can only be Hoffman. What a spiteful petty little ass. You pissed in his cereal so he locks Chimera out of some fancy party. Well, good to have Helena in your corner you guess. Hmmm...you pick up the other letter. Well invitation really. It's what you'd expect. X is hereby invited to yadayadayada. Rich people talk and all that. You lay it aside. You'll deal with it in the morning you suppose. For now you hide them both under your pillow. Can't be too safe these days!--->You are not telling the others about this. You'll keep it hid. May be a handy secret at some point. >Go to Ernst with it when you can?>You'll show the team and see what they think?-->THAT'S ALL FOLKS! See you in the Morning and stay excellent!

>>4825933>>4826296>>4826431>>4826520>You'll show the team and see what they think?"...so let me get this straight", Sergei says quietly at breakfast. "Somehow, you, plebian from the back of Huzara, were invited to a party for the rich and powerful? And by Dietrich Bormann's niece? And I'm not invited? Criminal.""He is a charming fellow, our Stanislaw!", Luigi interjects. He proceeds to shovel the last of an omelette into his mouth. You rub your neck. "I mean first, rude, Sergei. But yeah, that uh, that about sums it up. Found it in my room like I said. Unbroken. Which I know is like against the rules--""I don't like it", Braun says, setting down his cup of coffee. Sergei chuckles darkly. "How shocking", he says. Braun gives him a look before turning to you. He taps the table right in front of you. "A few reasons. One, the fact you were smuggled a letter on a Sturmwing base is a breach of security. I know I'm not exactly Mr Rule Book, thank heaven, but I'd be curious how they pulled it off. Either someone here is working for the Bormann's-Bad-or some random underling managed to enter the base. Both are uh, disturbing", he says. You chew on that for a few seconds, before a thought hits you. "The janitor!", you exclaim. The others give you odd looks. "Uh, what about him?", Braun asks. You wave your hand. "Nono. Or, Fake Janitor, I guess. There was a guy in the barracks last night. Get this, he Cleaned. Our. Rooms", you whisper, leaning forwards. "Uh, friend, is that not what janitors do?", Luigi asks. You shake your head with a sigh. Pinching your nose, you try again. "Except he looked new, or at least I'd never seen him before. That could be our guy", you say. Braun gets a frown on his face. "Alright, well, that's suspicious. Are you sure it wasn't one of the ground crew in a stolen uniform?", he asks. You think on it. "Well...I can't say for sure. I don't know everyone here, but I'm definitely sure that I've never seen him before...."Braun nods, satisfied. "Ok. Now for the other reason. Nothing good comes of House Bormann", he states. Ah, this again. Well you hadn't expected anything less. "This seems innocent enough, but...."Sergei crosses his arms. "It's this bit with Marshal Hoffman that worries me. That canker sore took time out of his day for petty revenge. I do hope this does not become his habit", he growls.Braun adjusts his glasses. "You leave that to me", he states. Then he gets an eerie air about him. "And Stanislaw..you are gonna wanna hang onto that invite. Burn the letter though."You raise a brow. "Uhhh, sure sir? But why?", you blink. The captain takes a long swig of his coffee, draining it. Then he hunches in. "Let's just say that it may do you ill to be associated with Bormann Corp in the near future. Food for thought", he says, rising. "Is this about the new info Ernst had for you?", you ask. "In a way, maybe. We've had conflicting information", he says vaguely.
>>4826527With that rather ominous conclusion, the lot of you finished your breakfasts. You were just about to head off for a friendly chat with Dmitri, when Ingrid enters the cafeteria. Looking about, she finally spots your group and waves. "Well, looks like Ernst finished his powernap", Braun says. "Come on boys, let's see what he cooked up now.""I can smell the burning buildings already", Sergei remarks. Luigi gives him a solid thump on the back. The Count flinches in annoyance under the blow. "Hah! There is good spirit friend Sergei!"For your part, you finish the rest of your coffee quickly. Your sleep last night had been..restless. None of those bizzare night..terror...vision things, thank the Creator. But this thing with Crow...you shake it off and remember Braun's advice. You had a job to do. ---"Ah, always good to see my men up bright and early", Ernst says as you enter his office. He is only partially in uniform, wearing a thin shirt above his pants. A cigarette is smoking in his fingertips. You glance down at the map laid on his desk. Various markings demonstrate what can only be a plan of attack towards the enemy Airbase inside the Huffendor."Stage Two at last?", Braun asks. Ernst nods as Ingrid takes her place beside him. "Just so. Based on our scouting and intelligence, we achieved exactly what we had hoped. The Huffendor is scraping the barrel just to stay in touch with Lothren, which gives us our opening...", he says. He gets a quizzical look on his face. "Excellent news!", Luigi exclaims. But beside him, Sergei cocks his head. He doesn't look to happy. " 'But' ", he says. "I am sending a But here."Ernst shrugs, before spreading his hands. "Guilty as charged. Ingrid, please update the map for our good pilots. Please."Smiling, Ingrid grabs a pointer, and begins to move various icons and tokens around the map. You see several new ones pushed into the vicinity of Lothren and the Huffendor. On your own side, several also beef up your side of the siege lines."What you are seeing is a rough approximation of enemy assets in the Huffendor and the surrounding area", Ernst says, tapping the map. "It does look like you boys kicked a beehive. We kicked them back a generation in terms of communication and they compensated with more machines."Sergei narrows his eyes. "They suspect us. The spy?", he asks. Ernst smiles. "Hardly takes a spy for them to know what we are about. The next logical step is an attack on their Airbase. With that gone, the Huffendor can hardly be kept safe. So, I brought you here to propose some options", he says. "Options, sir?", you ask. "That's right. Ingrid ran some numbers with our analysts. We could hit the base in broad daylight for one. That would make things easier in an aerial sense. We aren't exactly swarming with night flying units after all...but...""...The Frogs would expect us. And they'd be deployed in force. Could get messy", Braun finishes for him. Ernst nods.
>>4826569"While a decisive battle is the ultimate goal, I don't intend to fight it until the Merovians feel pressured into a full committal...and we need this victory to persuade upstairs to dedicate a final shift in resources", he says. "So what's option two?", you ask. Ingrid steps forwards and moves some more of the pieces around. A bat for one. "Option two is a bold undertaking. We would be launching a large scale night attack into the Valley", Ernst states. Braun gets a grim look. "Ernst...you just said we don't have night fighter resources...""True enough. But we do have one. Vampire Flight is willing to accompany us on Loan. And we have plenty of skilled pilots who could handle it. Best of all, the Merovians would never expect it"."Vengeance for their own night raid...", Sergei says, scratching his chin. "It could work. But those pieces..this isn't a small operation by any means.""Smaller than the daytime option however. We'd be looking to slip into the valley with a formidable but efficient strike force. We hit the Airbase, destroy it, and soar out. That's the plan", Ernst finishes, taking a smoke. He looks around. "Let's hear your thoughts."---->The Day option sounds safer. And your last experience at Night wasn't great...>Fortune favors the Bold. We should attack under darkness.

It would be one hell of a shock to the Frogs, that's for sure! Your mind is made up. "I'm for the Night Assault", you say. You see Braun look skeptical and you shrug. "Ernst is right. Unless we wanna risk the Merovians blowing their tops early, it's the better option", you say. Sergei nods in agreement. "And they won't see it coming", he says. "It will strike fear into their hearts and panic into their minds.""Bah! I say let us do this thing head on!", Luigi barks. "It is no good to hide in the shadows! We must fly proudly.""I'm in agreement with Luigi actually", Braun says. "I'm no fan of just rushing the base in broad daylight, but there are too many risks with the night plan. We aren't trained to run a full operation that way."Sergei scoffs. "Need I remind you we did just fine in the last night battle? We repelled the Merovians. They failed", he states confidently. Braun is unimpressed. "Fine? Sergei, they came this close to taking out HQ. If it hadn't been for some timely reinforcements...""..Reinforcements that are available now Captain!", you say. "We'll have Vampire with us on point. They can guide us in!""Rook, this is like asking a vet to patch up a human. They can do it, but they're just as likely to make a mess. I'd be fine with it if we were better prepared. If we had more time to secure night pilot assets--""We don't have that time", Ernst says calmly. "Rollout of the Super Artillery is due in exactly one week. And Hoffman is insisting it's already functional, so even that delay is shaky. He's been lobbying hard. Damn hard. And it's all Von Feldmann can do to push him off. We can't look like beggars. It's now or never."Hmmm..."Well, it should not take a week to do our plans, Si?", Luigi asks, scratching his head. "We fly out, destroy their base, then have the big fight as last step!"Ernst draws deep and puffs a smoke ring."I wish it were that simple. I really do. But there's always a chance the Merovians act erratically. Some unforeseen factor. We'll need every day we can get. Once the airbase is gone, we'll do everything we can to force their hand. We have to hope that's good enough...", he stops, thinking. "Now...what are we deciding?"Guess its time for you to lobby!---->1d20!

"Night. Let us end them", states Sergei. And you of course..."Night!", you say confidently. With that a tie, you all turn to Ernst. The blonde man gets a little smile on his face. Then he shrugs slightly. "Night", he says. You see an uncertainook on Braun's face, but he doesn't try to fight it. He just nods. Luigi much the same. "Excellent", Ernst says. "I want you all to take it easy. Go ahead and get any arrangements you need with Dmitri. Once you are needed, be ready to go. We will launch the mission tonight.""Tonight?", you ask. "Will the others even be ready sir? Won't that take time?"Ernst shakes his head. "They were informed yesterday that we were going forward with this. Informed...discreetly mind you. The plans were encrypted, and I listed every name who touched it. If we are betrayed, I mean to know by who. That's for damn sure...""So you think that's a risk?", Braun asks. Ernst shrugs. "Probably not. I've vetted most of these people, and the traitor is starting to smell...like medals. If you get my drift not some letter opener", he says. "That will be all...but before you go, here this..."He stands up, eyeing you all. "There is every possibility that Foudre Flight will be in the area. We know they run night patrols occasionally, and they are damn good at them. If they meet your force, you are NOT, I repeat NOT to pursue them outside the mission area. Try to limit engagement time to a minimum. I'm not saying don't take the shot if you have it...but eyes on the prize. Boucher is the dessert, not the entree.""And I trust you've given the Wolves the same lecture?", Sergei asks. He picks up a little token from the map. A wolf head.Ernst sighs. "I'm entrusting you with the task of not letting Paul get himself killed. You aren't babysitting, but if Boucher shows up and he loses it, rein him in. We need him alive. A list of other planes will be sent around before launch. Are we absolutely CLEAR on the Foudre policy?", he ends, looking around. --->Fine....>A lot of things can happen in the Dark. Whose to say you don't get "lost" and "conveniently" chase Boucher down!
>>4827048>>4827183>Fine...."Fine...", you mumble. But your voice is lost in the general acclamation. You guess you'll follow it. Mission first and whatnot. But that didn't mean you had to like it. At all. "Very good! Be about it!", Ernst says."Yessir!"---The day greets you outside. "Alright. Now that we are good to go, I'd advise you lot to make any final preparations. We've got till nightfall. Or maybe longer I suppose, depending on when Ernst calls us up", Braun says. You nod. "I'll see Dmitri about my ride Captain. Might be a few things to discuss", you reply. Sergei shrugs. "My plane is already excellent. It suits me just right. I have no need for petty adjustments", he says haughtily. Braun chuckles. "Then what ARE you gonna do?", he asks. "I am going to sleep. As I'd advise you all to do as well. You'll need your energy for the mission. It's too important to risk for some petty thing", Sergei replies. "I am thinking I will take a nap too!", Luigi says with a wide grin. "Friend Sergei, you will awake me when the time comes?""Do I look like a maid?...fine. Just don't do that thing you do. With the punching when you wake up and all", he sighs. "It was one time, friend Sergei! You never let Luigi forget this!", the Aldanian protests. "He is very sorry!"The two of them say their farewell and wander off towards the barracks. That leaves you and Braun. The Captain claps his hands together. "Righto! To Dmitri we go", he says, stepping off in that direction. You nod and follow after. ---When you show up, Dmitri is putting the finishing touches on you and Braun's Udets. It always makes you happy to know the big Strelkayan is a fast worker. He waves a big meaty hand at you, handing a brush back to a worker. "Ah, good Captain Braun and young Stanislaw!", Dmitri booms. Brauns lip twitches a bit at the greeting. "Young? And what am I, some wizened sage?", he remarks. Dmitri winks at him before laughing. "Come come, tell Dmitri what you need. Let me guess, you are here to see me about your craft? I have received word this mission. Bold and important! Unfortunately, Dmitri has no night planes in stock. Not common! But there are choices nonetheless! Come!"You look them over. --->The Udet VII. Tried and true!>The Triplane. That extra maneuverability will be handy in the dark! >The Voss? "Not a bad choice", Braun adds. "Don't wanna shake things up too much before a big one like this. And a plenty good craft at that."Dmitri nods, satisfied. "Da, and...Stanislaw, will you be wanting the cannon? There is plenty of time to switch your set up around before tonight. Destruction of the base is a goal, yes! Perhaps you need heavy firepower?", he asks, scratching a cheek. "Keep in mind, I'm sure Ernst is dispatching ground attack units with us. If you want the cannon, that's your business Rook, just keep the drawbacks in mind", Braun says, as a crewman comes over to him with a chart in hand. "Ah, thanks", Braun murmurs, taking a look at it. "I'll catch up with you tonight Rook. Just get that plane ready.""Now then", Dmitri says, rubbing his hands together. "What shall it be?"--->Use Dmitri's cannon. That firepower could come in handy. >Use your MG's. The Cannon is too big a risk for this mission.

It did pack a punch to be honest. You smile. "Put the cannon on, Dmitri. Go big or go home I suppose. We aren't meant to get into a long fight anyways", you say. The chief mechanic gets an excited look on his face. You made him a happy man. "Haha! Da! It is oiled and calibrated my friend. You should have no issue!", he says loudly. Then he turns to some crewmen standing by. "You heard the pilot, Da? Begin installation. We move quickly, big mission tonight! Chop the chop people!"Normally you'd leave them to it, but with nothing better to do you lean against an old Voss and watch them work. You've always been kind of curious how they manage to pull this stuff off. Watching a master at work as you will. You'll catch a nap after....----*-nd remember, we go in and out. We stay long enough to make sure the airbase is put down for good. Then we exit all nice and smooth like. Keep that in mind!*, Braun says. The moon is high in the sky, and the birds of Chimera Flight are making their way towards the Huffendor under cover of shadow. Stage Two is well and under way, but first you need to meet with the rest of the attack force. "Yessir", you say. "The others will know the same, right? I mean, I'd hate it if...uh..."*A bunch of morons blew the mission to hell?*, Sergei adds, tactful as ever. Well you weren't going to put it that way, but you guess it summed it up.*No worries on that end. Ernst knows his resources. Unless Paul decides to go on a merry chase, we should be fine. And I think he's learned to contain the impulse...hopefully*, Braun sighs. You nod. The Werewolves had much fighting spirit, but impulse moderation wasn't exactly their strength. Granted, if you trusted anyone other than Chimera with your life up here, they'd probably be your second choice. You think they were a good pick for the mission. *Luigi still does not like this. To fly under the moon is one thing, but in a valley such as Huffendor, with so many twists and turns...*, he veers off. *Nervous big guy?*, Braun asks, surprised. *Hah! Luigi is never nervous. He worries only for fellow pilots! You leave it to Luigi Pesani, strongest man in Aldani, and he shall not let you down!*, he replies. You detect an effort at fronting. *Don't tell me your afraid of the dark!*, Sergei scoffs over the set. *Luigi fears nothing. The Dark fears me!*As you ponder the logic of that statement, you think you catch some dark shapes moving under the moonlight. It's hard to make out..but...Braun must see them too. *Chimera Flight here. Name yourselves.*
>>4828560In turn, they rattle off.*This is Count Vlak. Vampire is here. Good night to you Chimera*, says one voice in an aristocratic tone. The others follow in suit. *This is Thor 1. Merovia has called down the Thunder. My boys are the boom.**This is Ferret 1. The Line Flights aren't gonna miss out on this. Sturmwing's cant have all the fun.**This is Crow 2. The Murder is coming along tonight.*And finally...*Alpha here. Werewolf is with you.*It's quite a gathering. And not insubstantial in power. If this was what Ernst had sent out for the "stealthy" plan, you wonder what he had meant to deploy in the daytime version? Granted, you uh, hadn't exactly had time to--*Crow, you weren't on the list*, Braun murmurs. *Where is Woodpecker?**Indisposed. We'll be filling in*, Crow 4 replies, calmly. You raise a brow. A last minute change of plans? *Well...good to have you. Have you gotten a new pilot already?*, Braun asks not ungently. You couldn't quite make them out yet, but if they were down a plane...*No. There wasn't time. We are what you have. Is that an issue?*, Crow 2 growls. *No. No issue. Anyways, good too have all of you here. But we need a plan*, the captain states. *Plan?*, a Ferret asks. *Don't we already have one though? We head in, make the frogs blow up! Simple!**I believe me meant specifics*, Count Vlak replies. *That is a rather broad plan**Exactly*, Braun says. *Now, I think we have a couple options on our deployment...*--->With Vampire on point, Thor and Crow will hammer the base. The fighters will provide them cover at all times. >Once you arrive at the base, you'll all hit it with everything you have. Stanislaw, when we reach their base, you'll head down with Crow and wreak what havoc you can. The rest of us will maintain our standard positions*, Braun declares. *And we will drop our bombs from up high!*, Thor 3 states. *They'll never see it coming!*A thought hits you. "Sorry to ask, but will you guys even be able to target the HQ properly from your normal height? In the dark?", you ask. Thor were good at their jobs, but the flying conditions weren't exactly top tier. The radio buzzes back. *Oh that's not so bad*, Thor 1 replies. *Once the attack starts, they will have to start shining the search lights. We will just aim in the middle then!*You nod. A sensible plan. Alright. *Be advised, the only people here with extensive night fighting experience is Vampire. From here, we'll defer to them. Count Vlak, would you assume point?*, the Captain calls over. *Certainly*, Vampire 1 replies. Veering into the front of the formation, the planes of Vampire Flight are as dark as the sky around them. Each bears a black bat on a white roundel, except Count Vlak, who wears the colors reversed.*Gentlemen, you are in good hands. If you would be so kind as to follow me? The night is something of our specialty*, he says, smoothly. *The key here is to make yourself as small as possible!*, a younger voice calls out. *That means engines low except in an emergency. No fancy flying, and do what the Count tells you!**I heard they were running patrols. Those aren't gonna be an issue?*, Wolf 4 asks. His Voss goes soaring by as Werewolf take up their position out right. *We've run patrols before*, Vampire 2 recounts. *This is just a bit bigger. Just follow our lead, and the valley will burn...**Uh...sure**Just keep in formation. You know the drill, Vampire. Let's find the enemy. Plan Night Hunter. Could the Merovians have spotted you? Then they speak to you all. *This is Vampire 2. We spotted Merovian patrols due Northeast. If we keep to the western half of the valley, we may avoid them. If they try and circle around, we may be able to get past before they show*, comes a raspy voice. *Valley wide sweeps is it? Very well. Everyone, stay on us. We'll thread a hole and get past in time. I advise running engines a bit higher for a bit. We need to make sure we are gone", Vampire 1 says. *And redirect to the northwest! Alright, so far so good. ---Issues began to emerge once you were well into the center of the valley. Very..bright issues. One moment the night dark was sin, with the only light coming from the moon. Then...*LIGHTS!*, Someone yells. Sure enough, spotlights begin to beam up into the cool night air. Their beams are like golden guard dogs, sniffing about for Konerlander fighters. *What the hell!*, Alpha growls. *Didn't you Bats tell us this way would be clear!**It was when we looked, ok! This wasn't here before*, Vampire 3 says. You can hear frustration in his voice. *What use are they?*, Ferret 1 wonders. *Would they even be able to tell they weren't just spotting their own people up high?**They must be compensating for the Patrol gaps*, Vampire 1 states. *I imagine when the Patrols are on this side, they would kill the lights. Likely there is another set in the East. Any planes at that point wouldn't be friendly. We simply have to adapt.**Your suggestion?*, Braun asks. *We slow and look for a pattern. Go go!*Gunning the engine, your Udet jolts forwards, avoiding the glare of the searchlights below. You wipe away a bead of sweat from your brow. Just like that it was over. Alright, that's a win. Now you can--*SHIT! SHIT!*, Someone yells over the radio. *They got me!*Your head jerks to the side and up, to see something that sends a chill down the back of your neck. Sure enough, a pair of golden spears of light have focused on one of the bombers from Thor. He had been a moment too slow it seems. Well this was bad. *Damn it all!*, Vampire 1 growls, his calm apparently forgotten. *Set your engines to full power! We must do what we can now! To the airbase! All ahead!*At about that moment, more and more search lights break from their standard search pattern. They track wildly across the sky, finding targets from all of the flights. You know what comes next. 'WeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEwoooooooWEEEEEEwoooooooo!!!!''AwoooooooOOOOOOOO!'Below, the search crews turn the alarms on, and even up here the shrill screams the machines make registers somewhat. Well shit. *Stay together!*, Thor snaps. *We can't get separated. Listen to Count Vlak. You aren't scared of a few lights, are you?!*(Thud)(pop)(thud)(pop)!Below and around, some light AA fire begins to come up as you rush through the wall of lights. We stay level.*You veer to avoid a light, and watch as the golden beam passes by, cutting into the shadow like a knife in butter. *In any case, the plan remains*, Braun calls out. *They know we are coming, but that won't matter. "Loud and clear Vampire. Let's get through this in one piece", you say, before giving it all she can take. Judging by your mark, you shouldn't be too far off now. *Excellent. Plus, the Udet let's you avoid the worst of the light ups. It's smoothe sailing for most of your people. At least, well, mostly. A bit of shrapnel scores on the side of a Thor, but it's only a very minor thing. The planes are too tough to be seriously worried by that kind of hit. All in all, your attack force makes good time. You can only hope it's good enough. --And then, after some more flying, you crest a rise and see a collection of spotlights further into the valley. They are trying to slow us down, even if it means sending them to die in those rustbuckets!*The Jezail was theoretically a very obsolete aircraft, but as you knew from personal experience, obsolete didn't mean harmless. Then, after breathing in, you squeeze the trigger. 'Thudthudthud! Thudthudthud!'You pull up and away at the last possible moment, sending a spray of high caliber shells into the vulnerable canisters. At this range you can hardly miss. And you don't. The cannon does its job. 'BOOM!''BOOM!''BOOM!'In a series of fiery blooms, several of the reserves torch up, and you have the sight of seeing a supply truck picked up and tossed away in the destruction. In the fiery light you can see people running around, perhaps trying to stop the fire from spreading. However, about half the stands remain. The job is incomplete. 'Tatatatatatataata!'You twist away as groundfire heads up towards you, getting past it with little more than a few scratches on your craft. It's a real battle now, no joke. 'BOOM!''CRASH!''BOOM!'*That's for Reuben, you bastards!**Yeh, fuck you!*You see a huge blast of flame and explosives as the planes of Crow Flight make good on their target. The side and top of the enemy HQ caves under the blasts of their bombs, having dumped their loads all in one big go. They had listened to Vampire then. A blossom of flame sprouts from the side of the building, and Merovian personnel swarm out of it, like ants. Ants who had just had a Flight of TNT dropped on their heads that is. However, the blast draws a lot of attention, and the AA fire reconcentrates. The bullets and blasts would have hurt normal planes badly, but the armored plates fixed to them shrug the worst. 'Tatatatatatatata!''crash! Boom!'Elsewhere, Vampire's 1 and 2 swoop in and out of view, sweeping the runway and gunning at anything unfortunate enough to get caught in their sights. One truck with an HMG mounted in the back tries to make a stand, with the typical suicidal courage you've come to associate with the frogs. 'Tatatatatatatata!'His bullets catch Count Vlak in the engines but it must have missed anything important. The Udet's counter fire sends the thing careening into a broken Fonck, flipping. *We've company!*, Vampire 2 states, soaring over a burning ruin. In the glare of the spotlights, you can see a handful of Jezails, Foncks, and other Allied planes scramble into the area. *We will handle them, then. They won't find us welcome visitors*, Vampire 1 states, his own Udet flying off to meet them. His wingman turns hard and follows suit, swiftly. You hope this doesnt mean Ferret and Werewolf were being overwhelmed. Thor should not be long now though. Once they made their drops, you could withdraw. You just had to make good use of your time...---->Try and clear away the Fighters with Vampire! >Try and finish the Fuel Holdings>Work with the Crows and cause general mayhem. Sounds neat!

I've got-THUDHuh?!?!gah!*In the distance, you see the firefight between Vampire and the Newcomers go sour rather quickly. For one, Vampire 1 is swarmed, but that doesn't seem to be the actual issue. With his skill, he is able to pass by his attackers...Until you hear the unmistakable thud of a cannon, and his plane pops smoke. Your only reaction is wide eyed shock. Merovian planes didn't carry damm cannons! Hell, most of your planes didnt carry damn cannons! They were usually considered too bulky and inneficent. Then how--'Thudthudboom!'*Gaah! He got me!*One of the old pusher planes had scooted by the pair of Vampires, and with a burst had cracked open the armored plating on the side of onw of the Crows. The Z1 tries to roll away, the two awkward craft making a bizarre dancing pair. *It's the Jezails!*, Crow 2 shouts out, as he veers in and out of sight. *The bastards are rigged for whaling! They stuck cannons on them!**Devilish idea*, Count Vlak replies. *But I must complement their ingenuity!**I'll complement them with lead!*, Vampire 2 growls, as he breaks away from the dogfight, bolting towards the dueling Z1 and Jezail. His Udet opens up at range, hitting the pusher craft. That gives the Z1 its own chance to turn the tables, and the Jezail retreats, leaking fire and smoke from the rear. Still, the aerial fight really wasn't going as well as it might...Then the radio breaks loose. *'Tatatattata! This is-'(cracklecrackle), Thor 1'Tatatatatata!' We are-'buzz!'-ing in! You hope the other members of Chimera Flight are Faring fine...*You heard the man!*, Count Vlak sounds off. *You may begin your withdrawal!*Of course, he is saying this while fighting off a swarm of enemy fighters, and bleeding smoke badly. He doesn't sound particularly worried. His Udet stays one step ahead despite the damage. Instead he is drawing off further away.
>>4842442*What?*, Crow 3 calls over. *What about you? Aren't you coming? That's gonna be a hell of a fireworks show, Count!**He's got me*, Vampire 2 growls. 'Vroooooooooom!'Your Udet speeds up, going into a U-turn, as you head after them. The radio immediately buzzes madly. *What the hell?! You too?*, Crow 4 says. *Has everyone gone mad? Sigh...*You settle yourself and pick up the piece."You all withdraw. I'm going to make sure that the Vampires get out of this. It's..I need to do this. You'll think of the rest directly after. Probably escape. However, as you make your way into the darkness, you sense and then see a trio of shadows bringing up your rear. The Jezail slams into a passing two seater, sending them both crashing into a nearby barracks in a fiery doom. And nearby, the Crows let loose as well. While most miss, a burst from Crow 2 knocks down the wounded Jezail from before, sending it down to the ground, where it skids and flips in a crash. 'Tatatatatatataatata!'A flight of Foncks rushes past you all, trying to get in amongst you. With a cry of anger, you drove your plane at them, letting loose with the cannon. A single plane drops, having had its cockpit cored by your big gun. Vampire 1 let's his own bullets fly, badly hurting a bogey. The rest flee into the shadows. But the delay was deadly. You look back for a half second and see the Z1 of Crow 4, already almost crippled, go tumbling through the air, tail aflame as his craft slides down into the gloom. His Z1 hits the dirt hard, bouncing on its belly before rolling over the ground like a crushed soup can. *NOOOOO!*, Crow 3 cries out, but the other members of the attack force barely fair better. Shrapnel and fire scores along them as late bombs keep falling, no doubt strewn at random from the careening Thor 4. Only you and Vampire 1, whether it be through luck or skill, manage to avoid any real damage. As you finally clear out of the strike zone you look around and note with horror the state of your allies. The Crows are bearing visible wounds, such as dented plate and scored wood. Vampire 1 is leaking smoke at a frightening rate, his engine coughing like something unholy. And Vampire 2 has a series of pockets in his wings that make you shocked he is even afloat. And you, somehow, someway, have barely been scratched....?*Shit...SHIT!*, Crow 2 growls, frothing. *Not AGAIN! You follow the Ferret into the darkness.---The sight as you arrive is...less than ideal. As the Ferret(3, apparently), had reported, it appeared his men were down a bird. The presence of Vampire 3 made up for it, but he was only one man. And the Merovians were pressing hard. *Captain! Captain I brought the Huzaran!*, Ferret 3 calls out. "Did I miss any excitement?"*We worked out our frustrations...*, Crow 2 mutters. Ah, suspicion confirmed. *I see you pulled the rats out of the frying pan. Good work.**And(cough) Mattos...I trussht you-(cough), fared well?*, Count Vlak asks. *I'm doing well sir. Can't say the same about you. You didn't get shot did you?*, Vampire 3 responds, probably noting the audible slur in the noble's voice. *A sshimple in and out affair..(cough). Focus on the mis(cough)shhion. Has anyone taken note of the Wolves?*You blink. Now that you think about it, you hadn't heard a single peep from Werewolf since they flew off to handle the Jezail wave early on...*Uhhh, guys?*, Ferret 3 gulps. *I think we may have an issue. 12 O'clock. Hot.*
Rolled 6 (1d20)>>4846287>WARNING WARNING >(HEROIC ACE APPROACHES)>The Black Lightning is Here>[Fire][Rage][Pain[Fire][Rage][Pain]----In the distance, illuminated by the light of the moon, and the fire of the valley below, come a trio of dark craft. They were positioning themselves so that you could not proceed without facing them head on....and you note the makes. Every one of the leaders was a pristine Fonck of new make, except for the one heading them.......who flies an aircraft you know. Boucher! You grab the radio, to wa--"GAAAH!"A violent punch from the Itch slices into your mind. Like it's being forced into retreat from revulsion. Trying to escape from a sickness in the air. And before you know it, your senses...[Fire. Hate. Burn. Kill. Destroy. Fire. Firefirefirefirefirefire!]The emotions come to you like a jackhammer from the void. Much like.last time, you cannot connect with Boucher, nor does he try either. He's a blank canvas, with no core. You sense only a black hole where the Phantom had a hitch for communication. This man was wrong. [Abomination. Desecration.]By the time you shake out of it, you hear the radio blaring around you. *--ITS, IT'S FOUDRE FLIGHT! FOUDRE FLIGHT IS HERE! ANYONE, CAN ANYONE HEAR THIS?*, Ferret 3 yells. "Don't panic!", you call out. "That's exactly what...he...wants."You blink as you notice Foudre Flight is not attacking. Far from it, they are simply patrolling over your line of retreat....high, granted. *Why..what are they doing?*, Ferret 2 asks. *Why aren't they shooting?**Check the radio...*, Vampire 2 murmurs. You have an idea of what you'll find. Flicking the set away from your friendly only airwaves, you are immediately faced with an eruption of accented Konerlander. *--OU HEAR ME, YOU ASSHOLES?*, Boucher roars. *I WANT CHIMERA 3! WHERE IS THAT SHIT! THEN I'LL BURN HIS SHEEPDOG ALIVE!*You blink. He wanted--[Hate. Fire. Fear.]*I want his head! These...this fire. BAH! This..this is his doing! Their doing! Face me you little shit!*, he growls. "Looks like you made a friend!", Ferret 1 sounds off. "Shame they seem to be down a plane. Less for us!"He's right. The Phantom isn't there. Odd. You knew he wasn't dead...*I'm holding your return route hostage!*, he snarls. *Step up, or I'll kill you ALL!**Yeh, you tell em boss!**Hahah!*But Foudre wasn't budging. --->This is fishy, very fishy. You aren't budging. Remain on defense. >Answer his call out! This is your chance! One lucky shot...>Try and play for time. You need to give reinforcements time to get here.
