Last time, still stuck in the past, you managed to sneakily retrieve past-Ms. Wilma from her evil orphanage with the help of your wits, your bullshit ability, some bedsheets and Officer Kobashi’s bicycle – all so she can eat some pudding! Yeah, this doesn’t really paint the whole picture, but it’s not like you know all the details.

What you do know is that the crestfallen girl is willing to risk everything just to escape with you, a complete stranger, and that’s not a good sign. You have some clues about what’s going on, but not all the clues; not even with her entity’s help, who has stayed with her since this trip to the past. Oh yeah, San Wich (the entity (who doesn’t look a Sandwich at all (which is a humongous letdown))) is with Wilma, and with his help, you might be able to figure out what’s going on – despite him not having a clue either.

Right now, you two are on your way back to “Shiva Public School” on a bicycle, and the downhearted Wilma pleads to you a heartbreaking request.

“Can you take me far away?” Wilma’s grasp around your body tightens, you feel her trembling – but her words almost sound empty. She’s desperate for a way out.

“I’ll do my best.” You make a hefty promise you aren’t sure you can make happen.

“…!” Wilma holds you tighter! She never had the faintest of hope you would ever agree.

“But we have to go to school first.” You need to get that pudding!

“…” Wilma doesn’t know what to do with herself. You can hear her heart pounding rapidly. “D-Did you just agree?” Wilma can’t believe it.

“Yeah, what else could I mean?” You know Wilma needs someone by her side.

“…” Wilma gets more comfortable on your back, she doesn’t want to let you go anymore.

What’s the plan as soon as you arrive to school?

>Get that pudding. This is why you did this!
>Try to find the other girls. They saved you some pudding, right?
>Try to find Matilda. She’s in there if you believe Officer Kobashi.

Votes:

Votes are counted until 25 minutes have passed. This rule doesn't apply to the last reply of the day.
Votes that require a dice roll are counted until 15 minutes have passed, so we can speed up the process. Rolls are counted until 10 minutes have passed, so be prepared!

(NEW) Dice Mechanic:

We always roll 1d100s!
Since most people weren’t happy with the system of averaging top four rolls, we’re using best of 2/3/4 depending on the attribute a prompt requires. If Johnny is a genius and it’s a Knowledge based roll, he gets more rolls (Max. 7)! If he sucks, he gets less dice (Min. 2)!

When asked for rolls, I will specify how many you’re going to get. Rolling begins after it’s asked.

Rolling 100 is a critical and ignores all other rolls! In the same vein, rolling 1 means a critical failure (only for Very Hard rolls and above).

The difficulty of the roll is tied with the effectiveness of the action. In other words, the harder the option the better the result!

Don’t forget that at the end of the day, this is a story-driven quest! What the prompts are describing is more important than the difficulty of the rolls, for results in a fight.

Again, rolls are only counted when they are posted within ten minutes of being asked, so watch out!

This is a bittersweet moment, but hopeful. You’re grateful you won’t have to ruin it with unnecessary chit chat now that you’ve arrived at the school. Time passes fast when you’re doing something tedious and difficult like pedaling from one location to another. That isn’t true, but you didn’t realize how close you were until you got here, so it’s kinda true?

Anyway, Shiva Public School! What a place! Last time you were here, you didn’t even pass the gates, but now you have no other option but to attend it.

“We’re here.” You park the bike in the bike parking spot. No matter what state your country is in, these are always around…

“…” Wilma dismounts the bike in silence, she’s not a very talkative gal. Not a problem, you’re used to people like this by now.

“Let’s find Mirjam and Grace. They should be at the cafeteria.” Or should you say ‘Grace and Mirjam’? Does the order matter? “They promised me they’ll save us some dessert.”

“…” Wilma silently nods.

“Can you lead the way?” You don’t know where you are. You’re surprised you even found this parking spot!

“Mhm…” Wilma nods and starts speed walking away! She’s fast!

You catch up to her, but with this pace, you don’t seem to be able to start a conversation. You ask Wilma to slow down, albeit late, as you’re in front of the cafeteria door. It’s in another building altogether from the school, a fact you find odd, but oh well, it’s not like Prancijan’s old infrastructure is any good. What is even more perplexing is the amount of people just sitting on the ground, some even napping, around the building. They all look so tired and/or depressed…

Together, you two walk inside the cafeteria. There is a strong stench in the air, you don’t want to admit it, but you think it is coming from the kitchen. What kind of foul food is served in this place? You don’t think Yu Yan would be able to withstand it. Wilma coughs a little too, so it mustn’t be normal. The place is half-full, and it’s very noisy, judging by everyone’s clothes and items, all of them are CotF.

With your superior height, you survey the area to try to spot the duo. They are sitting together near the farthest corner. You start making your way there with Wilma hiding behind your back…

“Hey, it’s Phil!” Grace is all happy to see you. “He came back like he promised!”

“Phil!” Mirjam is happy to see you too, and for some reason, she decides to stand up. Mirjam quickly realizes that wasn’t necessary, and sits back down.

“Now it’s you girls’ turn to fulfill your part of the promise.” You adjust your glasses.

“Is Wilma behind you?” Mirjam notices there is something off.

“…” Wilma doesn’t say anything, but her head peeks out behind you.

“There you are!” Grace smiles. Then Grace starts chuckling. “Did Phil take you out of bed or something? Hihihi!”
>>
>>4814902

“Yeah, what’s up with the bird nest look? Hehe!” Mirjam tries to hide her laughter. Wilma disappears behind your back. She’s embarrassed.

How do you respond?

>“I think she looks very cute.” You won’t let the Sandwich be sad!
>“Don’t be mean to her.” Scold these two.
>“There is a lot of smacktalk here, but I see no pudding.” Time to give Wilma her meal.

“I think she looks very cute.” You won’t allow this sandwich to be slandered like this!

“…!” Wilma turns into a tomato. She never thought you had the cheek to say this in front of them. But you have. You like teasing people. You blame Yu Yan for this.

“Eh?” Mirjam is really confused.

“Y-You like it?” Grace doesn’t get it either.

“Yeah. I do.” You like pretty ladies with fluffy hair.

“…” Grace is considering taking her pigtails off.

“Y-You have some wild taste in hairrrcuts.” Mirjam tries to joke around.

“A pretty girl can work any style though.” You think. You’re out of your depth here.

“I mean, Wilma IS pretty.” Grace agrees with that part of the assessment.

“Yeah, I’m actually jealous sometimes. She’s an adorable muffin.” Mirjam smiles. She’s no muffin, she’s a sandwich.

“…” Wilma is getting overwhelmed by the positive feedback. It’s adorable.

“Well, if she wants to rock it, then it should be fine.” Grace is going to be supportive. “Though, Wilma, I thought you were going to say something back like old times. Don’t be a stranger!”

“…Uhm.” Wilma has issues expressing herself.

“I still think she needs to comb it a lil’ bit.” Mirjam won’t allow Wilma to stay like this. “I don’t think it’s going to fly with our teachers.”

“Yeah, maybe? I don’t know. Hahaha.” Grace starts chuckling at her own indecision. “Random question: Do you like my hair, Phil?”

“D-Don’t put him on the spot.” Mirjam shakes her head.

“Why not? He had no problems saying nice stuff to Wilma.” Grace pretends to be confused.

“…” Wilma leaves your back, and stands right next to you. She’s slowly calming down.

How do you respond?

>“Ladies, where is the pudding?” Ignore Grace.
>“I think you look fine.” Give Grace a thumbs up. Girls love thumbs up.
>“Of course, it’s yours after all.” Smile.

“Of course, it’s yours after all.” You smile, you don’t want any of the girls to feel bad about themselves!

“E-Ehm, y-yeah!” Grace gets what she wants but doesn’t know how to respond. She looks all bubbly, but decides to grab both of her pigtails to cover her face and shake her head while coyly staring at you – face turning red. “I’m glad you like it…” Her voice comes out muffled thanks to her hair.

“I-I’ve never seen you being this shy before.” Mirjam is out of words. Mirjam wasn’t much better when you met her earlier.

“H-Huh? Y-Yeah…” Grace can’t convey her feelings into words. She ends sinking deeper into her hair, she looks like some weird-ass broom.

“I also find your ribbon cute, Mirjam.” You flatter the girl with the lisp.

“Y-You do…?” Mirjam adjusts her ribbon just out of instinct, she starts staring at the ground as her cheeks get gradually pinker. “I s-suppose it is…” Her voice got lower as she spoke. You just threw a flattering remark to her ribbon and she acts like this?! Do any of these girls get any compliments…?

Wait, that means you have something in common with them! You feel a little more relaxed. It’s kind of soothing to you.

“…” Mirjam, Grace and Wilma are sitting down at the cafeteria table, staring at you, like a crowd of tomatoes waiting for the show to continue. You’re no vegetable showman, but you remember what the main event is all about.

“Also, I believe a certain sweet was promised on my return.” You adjust your glasses again to show you mean business.

“R-R-Right!” Grace remembers.

“Yes!” Mirjam nods.

“Ehm, ladies, where is the pudding?” You scratch the back of your head.

“Pudding…!” Wilma’s eyes start shining again!

“P-Please, Phil, sit down!” Mirjam stands up and grabs your arm.

“Y-Yup!” Grace grabs your other arm and they both lead you to sit on their spot.

“…” Wilma is just staring at you, shaking a little, right in front of you – like you’re on an awkward date.

“Here, w-we saved one for you.” Mirjam takes a sealed pudding out of her case.

“W-We shared one among us.” Grace nods as she hands you a spoon.

Just one spoon though…

Well, Kobashi wanted Wilma to have this, but you want a little taste just to see if this ordeal was worth the hassle. The part about doing this for the pudding, not the part of helping Wilma, that will always be more than worth it.

“Since those two shared one, do you want to share this one with me, Wilma?” You offer the silent girl some delicious pudding.

“I mean, Mirjam ate most of ours…” Grace throws her friend under the hole-filled bus. The pigtail girl is at least out of her perpetual embarrassment from a second ago.

“I-I forgot w-we were going to share it. I-I ate most of it by the time I realized…” The guilty pleasure of enjoying her sweets was Mirjam’s downfall. Unlike Grace, Mirjam is still red.

“It’s fine, you promised you’ll share your next treat with me.” Grace is already salivating thinking about it. She doesn’t hold any rancor in her body… for now.

“So, Wilma?” You bring the topic back down to earth.

“Mhm…” Wilma agrees to do it.

“C’mon, Wilma, show some confidence! We know you have it in you.” Grace wants Wilma to say it. “You’re stealing Mirjam’s whole schtick by acting this way.”

“W-W-What do you mean?” The shy Mirjam feels offended.

“You may act differently now, but we know who you really are.” Grace smiles. Maybe Wilma was part of the group of friends that split off.

“We’re still friends, Wilma.” Mirjam gets all corny. In fact, this whole conversation is corny. Or should you say ‘wholesome’?

“…Please.” Wilma pleads to you with her head down.

“That’s not much better, but I’ll take it!” Grace is content with this.

“Here.” You hand the pudding to Wilma after taking a little bit for the taste, leaving the spoon inside it. It was surprisingly decent, almost good.

“I-If she takes it, isn’t it an indirect kiss…?” Mirjam gets all red thinking about it. Or redder in this case.

“What are you? A middle schooler?” Grace has a laugh at Mirjam’s expense.

“…………...” Wilma already ate a bit before hearing that. She has the full spoon inside her mouth. Her face turns crimson and her eyes open wide, it seems the thought didn’t cross her mind at all and now she’s frozen.

“You both are! You two are adorsh!” Grace finds this really funny. “Hehehe, it’s not that funny… I’m kinda jealous now.” What a mood swing.

“……………………” Wilma rapidly devours her pudding. It’s really her favorite! But you don’t think she really enjoyed it…

“I know that look, you want more, right?” Grace is having fun here.

“Sorry, w-we couldn’t get a hold of more. It was one per person, and they are out of them now. They’re really popular.” Mirjam brings the bad news. “There is plenty of cafeteria food if you’re still hungry.”

Yuck…” Grace isn’t a fan. “That reminds me! Cookie was with us during the morning. I don’t know how she can stomach so much of this food! If you were here, we could’ve had what’s left of the group together one more time! Just a funny thought.”

“I don’t think Chio would agree to meet with us, she’s a teacher now.” Mirjam looks sad about that fact. “F-Forget about that, we have an hour, we should show Phil around. He needs to know his way inside the school.”

“Why? He can always depend on us.” Grace sits right next to you and gets closer. “’sides, he forgot his backpack, and we’ll have to share stuff with him anyway!”

“Wilma doesn’t have her stuff either...” Mirjam notices. “Where are they?”

“….It’s complicated.” Wilma doesn’t know how to explain it.

“Yeah.” You wonder if you should explain what’s going on.

Well, Mirjam said you have an hour before classes start… Which makes them start later than you’re accustomed to, which is better in your book.

What do you do?

>Stay here, let Wilma eat breakfast. Just talk to the girls and learn even more about them!
>Try to find Matilda. You’re trying to find your friends!
>Let the girls walk you around. You might find what you’re looking for anyway.
>Ask them to present you to that teacher, Chio. It’s a good idea for a teacher to show you around.
>You wanna meet this Cookie. Though, after the San Wich incident, you don’t know if you can take another being that doesn't look like food…

Honestly Matilda's not one we have to worry about very much. Oliver's the fuckup (was this his old hometown? He might be off seeing his relatives that died if it is). Eventually Scarlet might show up somewhere but chances are good the time dilation in here is wild, if it's anything similar to how Xavi's ability worked (and it seems to be at least a similar pseudo-space).

“Anyway, the food here is pretty bad, huh?” You’ve realized it’s just some bland stuff that people around are eating.

“D-Did you not like the pudding?” Mirjam can’t believe it. The tomato crowd is ready to crucify you for your opinion.

“I-I mean, the actual cafeteria food. Not Kobashi’s.” You clarify.

“Our chef wouldn’t be happy to hear that if you haven’t eaten it first. I think it’s alrrright if you ask me.” Mirjam looks more comfortable talking to you, as she sits right next to you. “At worst it’s all kind of bland since it’s all bean, oat and onions based.”

“That’s a huuuuge understatement. It’s so boring it’s awful.” Grace disagrees.

“You’ve become quite picky after dating that regular for a week…” Mirjam is tired of hearing Grace complain about the food.

“It’s not my fault he took me out for dinner and I experienced actual tasty meals! ‘sides, don’t tell ‘em how long we lasted, you’re making me sound bad in front of Phil and Wilma!” Grace won’t let that slide. “I’m a very devoted girl, Phil! Y’know how it is with regulars. I was tired of hiding everywhere and pretending we didn’t know each other. I’m no second-class citizen, my parents are heroes!”

“…” Wilma rolls her eyes.

“Grace, don’t forget that Phil might be a regular, he’s not like them, but…” Mirjam doesn’t think Grace should throw comments like that.

“Relax, Mirjam. You heard him before! Phil doesn’t care about being labeled!” Grace grabs your arm.

“It doesn’t mean we should take advantage of that.” Mirjam grabs your arm as well, but looks a little guilty.

“…” Wilma just stares at both girls being too close to you. Maybe the room got a little colder and you haven’t noticed? “…The food is okay.” Wilma mutters.

“None of you seem too big of a fan, huh? I was wondering if there’s a place I can use to cook something for y’all.” You throw the full idea before they start rambling again.

“You wanna do what?” Grace is confused.

“A place you can cook? Like the Home Economics Classroom?” Mirjam wants you to specify.

“Yeah, I’ll need ingredients too.” You wanna cook! You’ll have to do it from memory, you can’t rely on the Internet this time.

“They keep some food supplies from the Farming & Agriculture class in the cabinets. It’s all supposed to be free access but they never hand us the keys...” Mirjam looks down. “..that’s why I learned to lockpick.” Mirjam’s eyes start shining.

“…!” Wilma didn’t expect that response! Neither did you!

“Can you show me the way?” You’re ready to do this.

“Of course, we can! We told you can always depend on us!” Grace gets all excited as she stands up and starts dragging you around.

“Be gentler, Grace.” Mirjam stands up and does the same. You start following them.

“C’mon, Wilma.” You tell the solitary girl that she’s coming along.

“…Mhm.” Wilma starts trailing behind.

You walk inside the main building. It’s mainly made out of wood and in decent shape, kinda of comfy – if it wasn’t a school that is. You’re walking with Grace grabbing your arm, Mirjam the other, and Wilma right behind you. They are acting like a human shield, and it’s difficult for you to walk, so you’re just letting them push you around.

You arrived at the Home Economics Classroom, it’s so big that it takes up more than half the space on the 2nd floor. There is a student guarding the main door, there are more entrances by the sides, but you’re already facing him.

“I think it’s the middle schoolers turn to clean up the classroom.” Mirjam forgot to mention it.

“Tch, you can’t negotiate with middle schoolers.” Grace already threw in the towel.

“Uuh…” You leave the conflicted girls behind, and approach the kid – with only Wilma guarding your rear. He’s stupidly tall for your average middleschooler, but not as tall as you are. “Hey there, can I go inside? I wanna cook something.” You keep your request simple.

“Hmm. Your name is ‘Phil’, right?” The kid is reluctant to let you in.

“Huh, yeah?” Are you famous or something? You’ve never been popular enough to be recognized.

“I heard about you from Cohen, you’re cool. You can go in anytime.” The huge kid smiles. “The new transfer student should know the place.” The big kid opens the door for you. Cohen has more friends than you thought! This is awesome!

“Hey, thanks.” You appreciate it. You and Wilma step inside and wait for the other two to go in.

“Eh…?” Both Mirjam and Grace are confused about what just happened and walk inside with you.

You’re all inside the Home Economics Room, it looks like one you’re familiar with, it’s kinda cool in a retro way. Unlike some other place you’ve been to here, this place is clean as a whistle – but you can tell it was used very recently, like an hour ago or so. You like it. Wilma leaves your nest and starts walking around the spacious room, both Mirjam and Grace look perplexed still.

“What’s wrong?” You ask the duo.

“I-I don’t know how it is in the city. But w-when it’s your class’ turn to clean up, you don’t let anyone in except your classmates.” Mirjam starts explaining. “Sometimes we gather and cook stuff for everyone. It’s great when one of your classmates knows how to cook.”

“I imagine regulars don’t assist.” You take a wild guess.

“Yup, you’re correct!” Grace would give you a star, but she doesn’t have one.

“Hey girls, can I ask you a favor? While I cook, can you try to find my friend?” You don’t know if you should say her name, you have a codename, so maybe Matilda wants one too?

“W-We forrrgot your friends again!” Mirjam feels all guilty.

“Take it easy, if we find them, it’s gonna be fine.” Grace doesn’t see the big deal. “Just take care of Wilma for us, okay? I don’t think she’ll be much help with how shy she’s acting now.”

“…Sorry.” Wilma looks down.

“Don’t be! We get it, right Mirjam?” Grace is all positivity.

“Yeah!” Mirjam smiles. “You’re talking about your friend Mr. Kobashi mentioned, correct? What does your friend look like?” Mirjam wonders.

“Or at least, like, what is her name.” Grace is asking the key questions here.

“I can’t tell you that, it’s a secret.” You adjust your glasses. “As for her appearance, can you lend me a pen and paper?” It’s time to show your Drawtionary skills. “Voila!” You show them your drawing.

“I’ll trace it very quickly…” Grace takes a piece of paper and does the deed! “Ready! Now, Phil! You owe a big reward to the one who finds her, okay?” Maybe it was her plan all along to exclude Wilma for this…

“Grace, don’t be so pushy!” Mirjam doesn’t want to take advantage of you. “You don’t have to do that, we’ll try to find your friend. We’ll come back in half an hour, so we have some time to eat.” Mirjam takes the original drawing and runs from the classroom.

“W-Wait, don’t leave me behind!” Grace trails behind her with her own copy. You thought they would split off after all of that, but it seems they are going together anyway…

You’re left with Wilma and a job to do.

“…Here.” Wilma opens the cabinet with the food inside.

“Great job.” Now you have to find the stuff to actually make the food in.

“…I-I wanna help you cook something delicious….” Wilma starts looking nervous. “As an apology to them…”

A shy but decisive Wilma is ready to cook a wonderful meal, and it’s all up to you to make it a reality!

What kind of food do you make?

>A nutritious meal. Light for the palate, great for the body! These girls need it…
>A fulfilling meal. It’s tasty homemade food with love. A classic.
>A delicious dessert. Girls love sweets! And you love making girls happy! …If that’s how you think, no wonder Nariko got so thick under your care…

You decided to make a fulfilling, tasty, homemade meal with love! A classic in every single loving household! Kinda dickish that you’re describing the food this way when it’s meant for a bunch of orphans, but they can’t read your thoughts, can they?

Can they…?

You stare at Wilma in case she’s doing it. She starts fidgeting and turning tomato again. Maybe she’s up to something, maybe her ability allows her to do it! She knows all your secrets and is playing along to your expectations, but why? Why would that poor little pumpkin be so devilish to concoct such a plan? To what end? You don’t understand.

“Partner, I don’t think she’s reading your thoughts.” Philonune breaks your line of thought. “Right, San?”

“Indeed, friend. We don’t have the capabilities to intrude on your thoughts. The Body is merely being aroused by your intense glare.” San is still here. Every now and then you forget the flames are witnessing everything.

“My partner wonders what specific words you just used to describe her conduct.” Philonune asks San in your name. “Now he tells me that that thought escaped him and he doesn’t have the intention to hear the answer.”

“Understood. Feel free to ask any questions about the Host and the Body’s state. I will provide any information necessary.” San wants to be useful.

Uhm… Uhm… Uhm…” Wilma is close to having a meltdown.

“Yeah, let’s do this!” You tenderly smile. “Just follow my instructions and we’ll end up with something good.”

“Mhm!” Wilma seems happy now that you’re not acting like a sociopath.

You two make some magic together inside the kitchen classroom and create a lovely homemade meal the gods would be jealous of! Yes! The Chicken Parmesan (with Noodles) is ready!

“How does it look?” You take it out of the oven!

…delicious.” Wilma’s eyes are shining again. Like she never smelled something like this before.

You hear two friendly girls get inside the classroom! Grace and Mirjam are back, and back alone. No Matilda in sight. Figures, they probably didn’t have the time.

“Just in time, ladies.” You wiggle them eyebrows as you’re giving the Chicken Parmesan some time to breathe.

T-That smells so gosh darn delicious.” Grace’s mouth is watering.

Yesh…” Mirjam’s mouth is leaking. “W-What is it…?” Mirjam wipes her mouth, all embarrassed.

“Chicken Parmesan.” You’re surprised they have some chicken in the freezer here, hell, a freezer is already pretty surprising.

“What’s that…?” Grace never heard of it before. Wilma just shrugs. You shrug. When the fuck did you learn to make it?! “W-Who cares! I’m hungry!”

“That’s the spirit.” You’re wrong. You should know what you’re eating. But hey, you don’t want to poison them or anything.

You serve everyone their plate and you’re ready to eat! You have like 10 minutes before classes begin! So you must eat fast! You all start digging in.

“By the way, did you find my friend?” You wonder.

“………….” Wilma, Mirjam and Grace are too busy to answer. They are eating like a bunch of starving ducks.

“Yeah, I figured…” You just calmly eat your food, you’re content with it...

“If this is any consolation, the Body is greatly pleased with the food she’s consuming.” San wants to cheer you up.

“I-I’m sorry, I’ve never eaten something like this before…!” Mirjam apologizes profusely.

Oh my gosh, can you be more perfect?!” Grace says before digging in more. Perfect at what? Mediocre Chicken Parmesan?! You’re a joke…

“A-And yes, we found her. But once we talked to her, she told us she doesn’t know no Phil…” Mirjam shakes her head. “I think she’s in her last year like us, but I don’t think we’re in the same class.”

“Yeah, that means we made a mistake! Duh!” Grace is finished with the food.

“But she’s exactly as Phil described her…” Mirjam is sure Matilda exists. Mirjam is done too.

“Thank you for the food.” Wilma hides her smile by looking away.

“So, you girls want seconds?” You wonder. Usually, you just wait for Nariko to bring this up to serve people more, but they are kinda quiet.

“You made something else?” Mirjam wonders.

“Show us!” Grace starts clapping.

“N-No, I mean, ‘seconds’ as in more.” You scratch the back of your head.

You hear the bell ringing! It’s time to go to classes! You think… Unless bells have a different meaning in the past.

“Oh shoot, it’s the bell, we have to go!” Mirjam gets all panicky. Wilma is panicky too!

“…But we’re getting seconds.” Grace doesn’t give a shoot.

“W-We have to take Phil to the teachers’ office.” Mirjam wants to be responsible.

“…But we’re getting seconds.” Grace really doesn’t give a shoot.

Microwaves exist in this time period, so it should be fine. On the other hand, microwaved food? Eugh…

Anyone else get the feeling this is potentially a reliving of Wilma's "worst day ever" or something? I kinda get that feel.

I also wonder if the 'clear condition' isn't maybe bringing down public outrage on the Bruun orphanage, like we heard happened just before coincidentally getting zapped into here.

“Sorry, but we don’t have the time.” You’ll have to save it for later. “We have to come back here to clean the dishes, so maybe I can cook something else.” You’ll leave a note here on the cookware so they don’t think you’re an inconsiderate ass like Neko. Also, you pack the leftovers inside a plastic container that was around. Wilma grabs a piece of her bedsheets to wrap it in.

“Can’t wait!” Grace is overjoyed to hear that.

“We should go…” An insistent Mirjam is the first to grab your arm for the first time.

“I wish we didn’t have to.” Grace grabs your other arm, and with Wilma in position (behind you), you all walk away from the classroom.

Once outside, you told the supposed-middle schooler bodyguard about the dishes being undone and your intention of coming back to take care of it. He doesn’t seem to care greatly about it, and tells you they’ll be undone for you to clean up. Well, yeah, you didn’t expect otherwise. Now you have an excuse to come back in case the Cohen card was a one-time thing. It took a moment, but Grace and Mirjam were somewhat insistent about hurrying up.

The girls leave you at the 3rd floor, in front of the Teachers’ office, they really have to go to their respective classrooms. Wilma didn’t want to leave your side (back?) even after the duo’s insistence, until you reassured her you’re coming back to get her later. It was only in this moment that it dawned on you that Wilma is a year younger than the rest of you, and even if she wanted, she couldn’t follow you all day. Mirjam and Grace are a year older and your age, so it’s likely you’ll end up in the same class as them.

As you’re left without the company of the trio of tomatoes, you decide to make your way inside. The place doesn’t look so different than you’re accustomed to in terms of presentation, but you cannot make out the words on some of the boards, books and papers lying around. You wait until one of the couple of teachers left makes eye contact with you.

“Another student? Did a teacher send you here?” Nariko wonders. Did she cut her hair…?

Wait, that’s not Nariko! She’s a little smaller and, uh, not as well-endowed… Is she one of the teachers? What’s going on?

How do you respond?

>“I’m a transfer student and I’m wondering if anyone can help me find my class.” Act as a clueless new transfer student.

“Nariko, you were sucked in here too?! I’m glad to see you here!” You start patting her head! This is good news!

What do you think you’re doing?” Nariko tries to grab your hand, but you’re far too smooth and agile for her to get a hold of it. You’re a headpat master, your technique is impeccable, and nobody is going to deter you from caressing with care and love.

“You’re such a good girl.” You smile from ear to ear. Damn, sometimes it goes under your radar how much you miss the people close to you…

STOP THIS AT ONCE! YOU’RE TRAMPLING OVER MY AUTHORITY!” Nariko is trying to swat your hand away, but since she’s a little bit smaller and you are far too skilled thanks to your training, you keep dodging her efforts. The prideful hobo is still holding her line, and won’t back down until she makes you stop with her own hands. She’s turning red, but unlike the tomato girls, she’s just deeply embarrassed by her lack of mad skills. Typical Nariko behavior.

“Nonsense, I know how much you like it, Nariko. By the way, I’m planning on making some delicious dinner tonight! You can have as much as you want!” An offer you’ll never repeat, you’re just this happy to see her again.

E-Enough…!” The clumsy bovine pushes you away, and with the whiplash, ends up tripping butt first on the floor. “Aagh…

“A-Are you okay?” You don’t remember her being as clumsy as Nina is sometimes.

“G-Get away from me…!” Nariko crawls away, full embarrassment. “Stop putting your hands on me…! I don’t know you! I don’t know no Nariko! Just stop!” Nariko (?) exclaims, all shamefaced.

“Oh…” You think maybe she’s not Nariko. But who is she then…? Nah, she must be Nariko. Maybe getting sucked in made her lose her memories or something.

“What’s going on?” The other teacher in the office appears.

“T-This student doesn’t want to—"

“Getting overwhelmed by a mere student, Chio?” The other teacher interrupts Nariko (?) before she can complain. “I told the principal having a recent graduate act like a teacher was a bad idea.” He seems disappointed. “Leave. I’ll handle this.”

“B-But…” Nariko (?) has that impotent rage look on her face, like every time Yu Yan makes fun of her ever-increasing weight.

What do you do?

“She hasn’t done anything wrong, she just tripped. I’ll be okay with her.” You’ll always defend your hobos, regardless of the timeline.

“…” Nariko (?) stares at you with a skeptical look on her face.

“And what was all the screaming about?” This teacher wants his answers.

“Uh… She was singing the national anthem.” Your improvising skills are only rivaled by a dead weasel on a windshield.

“You don’t have to do that here, just with the students. But I suppose that’s why you were one of our honor students, huh, Chio?” The teacher sighs loudly. “Too bad you’re only book smart, girl. I bet you’re still not used to walking on heels, young people are so clumsy these days.” The teacher walks back to his desk without bothering to check if Nariko (?) is all right or not.

“Tch.” Nariko (?) wants to say something back, but knows she’ll be in trouble if she opens her mouth.

“Here.” You extend your hand to help her stand up. Nariko (?) refuses with a glare and uses a desk for support. Once on her feet, she tidies up her appearance to look presentable. “Sorry about that.”

Brainwashed Nariko doesn’t look one bit pleased…

“You’re coming with me.” Nariko (?) starts walking towards the exit.

“Huh, where?” You wonder.

“Detention work.” Nariko (?) is now the one dishing the punishment.

“Detention…? During classes…?” You scratch the back of your head in confusion.

“What’s the big deal?” Evil Nariko doesn’t get your confusion.

What do you do?

“Nothing...” You start trailing behind evil Nariko, as you two leave the office.

Once outside, you notice that she doesn’t have a flame on her left hand, which means she’s not actually Nariko! Oh, what a big misunderstanding! You hope you can laugh together about it later, once you clean it up.

“I confused you with someone else.” You start talking to the displeased teacher. “You’re Chio, you’re friends with Grace, Mirjam and Wilma, right?”

“I’m Ms. Chio Edamura to you, sir. And thinking cronyism is going to do you any good, you’re sadly mistaken.” Chio doesn’t even care about who you just mentioned. Wait, is she Nariko’s mother…? “What’s your name?”

“I’m Phil Noon. I just want to turn to a new leaf if possible. You reminded me of one of my roommates, and it all went downhill…” You sound apologetic.

“What kind of degenerate do you have to be to greet someone like that?” Chio is a prudist. Headpats are a universal sign of love and care.

“Degenerate? For headpats..?” You think Chio is exaggerating. What is she? A middle schooler? Oh god, you’re starting to sound like Grace… “Anyway, I know I was wrong, so as an apology, I can cook up something to eat, if you’re interested.” You adjust your glasses.

“Why would I be interested in the foul cuisine of a foul man?” Chio waves off your peace attempts.

“Give it a shot. I know you’ll like it.” You’re confident about your skills! Mainly because of her bloodline…

“You’re just trying to weasel your way out of your punishment, aren’t you?” The snotty Chio thinks she’s reading you like a book! Too bad you’re more like a novel written by an alcoholic with a lot of pages missing! “Hmm, I think you’re going to spend the whole morning at the farm so you can work the ingredients. Hahaha!” Chio sounds evil. No wonder Nariko is a dummy.

You don’t know if you expected something positive, but this is not going as you expected…!

What do you do?

“So, is that a yes?” You start wiggling your eyebrows like a maniac.

“W-What are you doing, haha?” Chio finds the wave movement funny. “Ehem.” She coughs and regains her composure to look all serious once again.

“I’ll need quality ingredients for the meal this evening if it’s going to be an apology meal. What exactly would you like to have for dinner, and when do you think you’ll be able to come over?” You insist.

“I haven’t agreed to anything.” Chio puts her foot down to show she’s not interested.

“I mean, no harm in trying it, you basically get a free tasty meal.” You want to convince her.

“Is this an excuse to have a date with me? Do you have the slightest idea in what position you are in here? Do you even understand who you’re talking to right now? I’m Chio Edamura. I’m currently one the biggest prodigies country-wide. Just by talent alone, I’ve received multiple art scholarships since I was 12 years old, when I was scouted by the PAMPN, joined their program, and excelled! I would’ve gotten the honor earlier, if they scouted younger CotF, but I don’t want to delve into that. I was given an honorary fine arts degree at the Baochang University, and I’m going to apply for my master’s degree soon. And I did everything while attending school and being the greatest honor student to ever grace this establishment. You can see last year’s record, if you like.” Chio really has a big ass ego! As big as her daughter’s big ass! “Also, I’m your teacher and you’re in trouble.” Chio should’ve started there…

“So that means you’re just one year older than I am. What’s the big deal?” You ignore all her drivel.

“I’m the big deal.” Chio demands your respect. “A-Aren’t you impressed?”

“Well Ms. Big Deal, I just really wanted to give you the apology you deserve.” You look down like you did something wrong. “I don’t want to be on your bad side, you’re one of my friends’ friends.”

“Hmph. I don’t understand why you’re so insistent. It’s impossible you can reach my demands.” Chio is… gauging your worth…? “But perhaps now that you understand the magnitude of the task at hand, I’ll amuse you.”

“Oh? Really?” You don’t understand why the change of heart but you’ll take it. “That’s cool. I’ll ask again, what do you want for dinner? When do you think you’ll be able to come over?”

“Why should I tell you? You must exceed my expectations.” Chio shakes her head.

“How can I be ready if I don’t know when you’re coming over?” You’re confused.

“Oh. That. Anytime you feel like it.” For such an important person, it appears Chio has a lot of free time.

“Then that will also be a surprise.” You adjust your glasses.

“Don’t make a lady wait.” Chio clearly wants you to take responsibility. But if you don’t agree on a date, how can you make her wait?

“I always leave my ladies satisfied.” With food. You wink at her.

“Why are you winking at me?” Chio doesn’t like that, though her cheeks are a tiny bit redder. You’ve done all of these kinds of things ironically for such a long time, you never expected someone to actually be bothered by them. You know you’re no ladies man, you’re just a dude.

“F-Fun?” You don’t have a good reason.

“I’m a teacher, I cannot allow fun.” Chio shakes her head. That would’ve been a funny quip if she wasn’t serious. Based on your experience, she’s right… except for a certain fluffy teacher.

“Uhm, you know I’m new here, and I really don’t want to go to detention on my first day.” You want to be a good student like she was!

“You’re new…? That must mean you’re a regular. I apologize for the way I’ve been behaving; I shouldn’t be so harsh on you. I assumed you were one of us leeches since you know Grace, Wilma and Mirjam.” Chio gets a little more formal.

“I prefer it if you don’t jump to conclusions...” You adjust your glasses again. You don’t want special treatment.

“Why are you acting so mysterious?” Chio is perplexed by your behavior.

“Fun.” You go back to that. Chio chuckles, but coughs to regain her composure again. She might have a cold.

“It fits your style.” Chio gives you a rare compliment.

“Seriously, I don’t want any special treatment.” You wave your hand.

“Would you like to go to detention then?” Chio is not joking.

“E-Except for that bit…” You don’t wanna go.

“Very well, you went to the office because you didn’t know in which class you belong, right? Let’s return and check that out.” Chio is walking back.

“Are you being nicer to me because you think I’m a regular?” You don’t get how things work in this time period, but this is one of the easiest things to understand.

“Discipline is important for us who are tasked to make the country that the last generation built for us, flourish. As CotF, we cannot let their efforts go to waste, we need to move together as one. I don’t know if you’re part of us. I’m not nicer to you, I’m less harsh.” Chio gives you her point of view. “Now if you try to do something funny again, I’ll take you to detention. Do you understand?”

“Aye, aye, ma’am.” You find it weird hearing someone be so commanding with Nariko’s voice. At least, a voice so similar…

After a quick visit to the Teachers’ office, Chio leads the way to your new classroom, you sorta expected your name not to be in any of the lists, but it appears it is, even as Phil Noon. It made you check your ID from this morning, and lo and behold, your fake name is on it.

Chio knocks on the door to your classroom and the teacher inside opens the door, he looks vaguely familiar, Chio and the teacher have a chat, mainly about you and your situation. The teacher doesn’t seem happy in the slightest with your late inclusion to the classroom…

“I don’t care if he arrived late, you said there was only one transfer student. One! How incompetent can you be, Edamura? For how long have you been teaching now? I know it’s just Art stuff, but you need to get it together. You have less hours than most of us for crying out loud.” The teacher scolds Chio.

“I apologize, Mr. Hubbard. I should’ve double checked the lists.” Chio apologizes as professionally as she can.

“You were an honor student, Edamura. You need to set an example or else all of your equals are going to start misbehaving. You’re their hope. Don’t forget that.” Mr. Hubbard just sighs. “Can’t expect much from youngsters like you, can I?”

“It’s not going to happen again.” Chio bows down.

“Yeah, yeah.” Mr. Hubbard dismissively turns to you. “You seem to be a good kid.” Mr. Hubbard looks at you from top to bottom. “Welcome to Shiva.”

How do you respond?

>“Thank you, sir. It’s good to be here.” You don’t want any trouble.
>“It was my fault, why are you scolding her?” You don’t get the same schadenfreude watching this particular art teacher suffer.
>“And you seem to be a shit teacher. But I’m glad to be here.” Smile like an asshole.
>“You’re being too harsh to her, apologize.” You won’t let this slide.

“It was my fault, why are you scolding her?” You don’t think you can let that slide. “I got a bit too excited for my first day that I ended up getting lost on the way to the teachers’ office.”

“And you wouldn’t have gotten lost if this klutz informed us you joined. We would’ve sent someone for you. It’s plain inexperience.” Mr. Hubbard respects you for your honesty, but won’t let Chio’s supposed error slide. “I can tell already that critical thinking isn’t your forte, but we’ll do everything we can to fix that for you. Our society will crumble if it’s filled with airheads like Edamura.”

“It’s easy to tell you’re making a big deal out of a non-issue.” You won’t allow yourself and Chio to be demeaned by this goofy looking fuckhead.

“Please don’t.” Chio doesn’t want you to keep fueling the fire.

“A non-issue? I never get the brighter ones…” Mr. Hubbard is disappointed in you. “If I wanted, I could bring this issue to the principal and get her demoted. She’s lucky she harvested some goodwill in me from her days as an honor student, which at this point, seems well past her.”

“You’re far too kind.” Chio bows to the nasty teacher.

“Spare me the fake adulation, just do your job properly next time for once.” Mr. Hubbard is beyond harsh.

“Like I said, It’s not go—”

“Enough. You’re dismissed.” Mr. Fuckhead waves Chio off before she can finish talking and turns to you. “You. Get in. We’ve wasted enough time as it is.”

What do you do?

>“I would prefer if you apologized to her first.” Be defiant.
>“I rather be in detention than stare at your ugly mug again.” Be subversive.
>Push him with your shoulder as you walk inside. Be petty.
>Apologize to Chio before going in. Be lame.

“Right.” You’re going to comply. “Thank you for taking me here.” You give one last shoutout to Chio before walking in.

“Hurry up.” Hubbard wants you to move.

And so, you did just that by pushing with your shoulder like an angsty teenager, the frail fuckhead loses his balance but catches the doorknob to stabilize. Leaving him outside of the classroom.

“T-That’s assault.” Hubbard can’t believe you just did that!

“Hmm?” You play dumb.

“You saw it, Edamura. Right?” Hubbard has lost all his cool.

“I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention, I’m too much of an airhead.” Chio smirks. She’s obviously lying and having fun.

“Grr…” Mr. Hubbard is looking pissed. You wonder why he doesn’t take you to detention, but perhaps Chio can argue your case and this would be a waste of his time.

You offer your hand to help him, but Hubbard glares at you as he struggles to stand up, then he walks past you, inside the classroom and to his desk. You hear your future (past?) classmates wondering what’s going on, as most of the show was blocked by the wall. You close the door behind you.

“L-Listen here, students!” Hubbard hasn’t calmed down just yet. Most of your classmates are taken aback by his demeanor. “We have another transfer student joining us… C’mon, introduce yourself.”

“Another?” You mutter to yourself and you survey the classroom. It’s clearly divided in two sections, one at the front and one at the back, you see your friends Grace and Mirjam in the latter. But between the battlelines, you recognize one of the friends you were looking for...

It's Matilda!

Or Matilda’s mom… You don’t want to make the same mistake again with Chio.

Anyway, it’s a huge surprise…!

Sadly this is all we have for this week’s thread, thanks for playing! And see you next time!

Yes, now we must talk to Matilda as if we think we might actually be talking to Matilda's mom

Thanks for running. I bet Matilda found a uniform to put on as part of her disguise here, and that girl isn't really Matilda's mom
>>

We came in wearing the school uniform, she probably did too.

Matilda in uniform is a cute

Oh boy, it'd be really funny if we actually met Matilda's mom

I was re-reading Matilda's dialogue in the Love Scramble non-canon thread because Matilda's always been an intriguing character to me. Her awkwardness, stoicism, and motivations are a nifty confluence I could never quite wrap my head around.

Also she holds the answer to the mystery of who built the johnny-snowman outside the hospital on Judgement Day. She also was strangely worried that we might've overheard whatever she told Nina as she quit Nina's crew immediately after we did. I've really been puzzling over her since I archive binged and hit those 2 points.

Anyway, as I re-read her dialogue in the aforementioned thread something finally clicked and I got a glimpse of the picture of her character. Forgive me if I'm retreading old ground here but I'm just gonna list off what I think for other anons to see and critique.

Also part of why I'm doing this is that I find it odd that she's surprised and somewhat blushing here in the last post rather than her usual cool and collected demeanor. I feel it's all related and I'll explain in a moment.
>>

Aah, well I had plans to write up a whole long thing but then I got distracted reading the Judgment Day stuff it's /so/ good

I guess the gist of it is that she has extreme trust issues that induce her crippling awkwardness, inability to express her feelings, and accordingly difficulty forming relationships. In the Love Scramble thread she kept superficially trying to deflect us from developing our relationship on a deeper level, but when we called her out on those tactics she would come out and admit she was in the wrong. It was just fear holding her back.

That is to say she kept superficially deflecting us except for one post. She was trying to call us out on something, but as these things tend to go with people their own insecurities come out in the lines of argument they take up.

To paraphrase a bit
>Johnny: "What are you worried about?"
>Matilda: "It's much more than that. I don't care about empty gestures of affection"
>J: "You're taking yourself too seriously"
>M: "Am I? I can't pick my friends lightly...I can't form a relationship with anyone...it's not that simple"
>M: "You should understand more than anyone Johny...forget what happened to you?...Those you helped...first to turn on you...ditch you when you needed them most...you never hesitated to help...looked down and called you worthless"
>M: "All the people you care about and helped betrayed you...nobody had your back"

Well, that's not the sort of thing a person who's been through the usual is going to say. Let's take a look at these things she's saying in the context of other things we know about Matilda and her past. Mainly
1) She used to hang around her granddad's dojo, those were her happiest times, she was a little kid
2) She has an incredibly fierce drive to restore the dojo. We've assumed this was just because of factor #1, but maybe there's more a tale of betrayal here than just simple pursuit of yesterday's happiness
3) This is actually just a little minor snippet that's easy to miss, but I feel it plugs in here somewhere. When she asked us to fight her to prove we were worthy to be her student she permitted us the use of Philonune, we just had to throw her once to win. We succeeded easily, because entities are hax y'know.
As probably the first time we saw Matilda's stoic facade crack even a little bit, she stayed on the ground for longer than she should've and we quietly heard her whisper "it's just not fair".

That little snippet, what she said to us in the Love Scramble quest, having some questions that maybe her motivations with the dojo are more complex than we might've first assumed. This all starts to form together into a backstory that's considerably more nuanced than what the girl who would do anything for money puts off at first glance.

Oh also 4) Matilda only learned Judo from her grandpa, Flint Masterson learned everything her grandpa had to teach and is the old man's declared best student ever.
>>
>>4825733
Anyway, that's all actually a side point from what I think is the most important thing about her. Which comes from the final line of the post I referenced in the Love Scramble Quest, where she concludes her tirade with

>"Nobody had your back. You chose the wrong people to help…"

This really seals the deal that she has complex feelings around the closure of the dojo, and (in her childish innocence) the people she thought she'd been good friends with either turned on her, abandoned her, or she's taking their lack of will to re-establish her grandfather's legacy far too personally. Anyway, a possible narrative of past betrayal along these lines very neatly fits into Matilda going on to develop a personality that is incapable of giving out the trust required to form meaningful relationships in the present. I think that maybe rather than run the risk of getting hurt like that again it's been easier for her to focus her mind razor-sharp on her goal(s) and deal with people only in a business capacity.

Aah, right I almost forgot. Along those lines she also later asks us
[Referencing everyone betraying Johnny on Judgment Day, though I would argue Matilda, Nina, and Yu-Yan were the only exceptions]
>M: "“Tell me, how much did it hurt when everyone, myself included, did that to you?”
>J: “It hurt more than the wounds Neko left me with.”
>M: “Please never forget that feeling...Because it’s something we have in common...And it makes me feel less lonely.”

Yeah, well that seals it for me that she was (at least in her perception) betrayed by everyone she had helped and relied on in her moment of need at some point in the past. That's not necessarily groundbreaking there's other evidence that's been presented that could've let us draw the same conclusion. For some reason piecing it together in these bits of dialogue really crystallized the details of her personality for me though.

Let me also say that when she said
>"Nobody had your back. You chose the wrong people to help…"
At the end of her rant...well we can also read that as a coded message she might not have even known she was sending where she's really saying
>"Please show that you're different, Johnny. Have my back when I need you, and help me when you don't have to"
Which I bring up because that might handily explain why she's surprised and a bit embarrassed to see us here in this weird-ass Flame-dream that Oliver got her sucked into. Someone used to having to solve their problems alone will be flustered when a valuable ally shows up out of nowhere to lend their hand and asking nothing in return.
>>
>>4825749

Those were my main points. Aside from that I guess I'd just like to point out that she harbors tremendous guilt and a feeling of personal responsibility over the worst parts of what happened on Judgment Day, and she would appreciate the chance to talk with someone she trusts about the pent up feelings (she says as much to us). Bradford's death got to her, reasonably so given the circumstances. I feel we may've been remiss in trying to help her with that given her typical stony personality. Whatever her background is, in retrospect it's inconsiderate that we would expect her to simply adapt and be ok with seeing someone die in front of her that she had been tasked with saving. Then she also got forced to strip at gunpoint too...though that's a separate item to deal with.

She also has self-esteem issues. Despite being one of the most competent and reliable people we know, she downplays herself severely
>M: “I don’t understand why you harbor those feelings for me, the only explanations I can come up with are reasons merely superficial, since there is so little I offer otherwise.”
This might just be due to the unresolved feelings of failure and responsibility around Judgment Day...but probably also she has some degree of victim-mindset as well from whatever betrayal occurred in her past that reduces her self-assessment as a rationalization for why people would choose to abandon her.

I think that's it. /rant

tl;dr Matilda is currently best girl I think and we should take better care of her
>>
DIfferent anon:
I also might the fact that there is more than just childish sense of betrayal around a dojo - it could be actual thing: while it’s unknown to a Johnny, most of his Poker Night members was former students of the Mat’s granddad, but most of them are fall apart from each other in some ways (like Flint). There is also a severe issue about yakuzas that used to train in that dojo (and just hanging around young Matilda) and the crippling debt and forced closure of dojo. It’s not just childish betrayal of trust, at least not on every level. There is one drama worth if not a proper spin off quest, but at least an Oliver’s tier storytelling
