You are Kaguya Muramoto, the illegitimate daughter of the pluto-aristocratic Muramoto Family. Once nothing more than another city girl among the millions of Urban Noir, since then you’ve since left your grimy arcology behind. Now you are educated in everything from history to advanced mathematics to politics, tutored in etiquette, archery, and the traditional arts. All of this to someday blend in perfectly as a true member of the Muramoto Family. But every now and then, you wonder if there is really a place for an illegitimate child like you in the rigid and formal world of the Plutocrats.

================================================================================

>Continued from last thread

In a diplomatic upset, you had accidentally spilled tea on the very fine clothes of your family’s plutocratic guest. Fortunately, he had taken it in good stride and no one else knew … yet. But it was still your responsibility as a hostess to find him a suitable change of clothes for his station, preferably without having to rely on your strict governess, Winslet-san.

… Hearing what the Enforcers have to say about you passing to meet your aunt, you give your most harmless, disarming, and above all, dejected expression.

"But I've already been through before." You protest. “If I don’t get through, I’ll be late.”

You can see the conflict of deeply ingrained training versus the innocent plea of a small child play out on the faces of the Enforcers. And the plea of a small child wins out.

“Alright, come through.” One of the Enforcers waves you through.

“Wait, is that okay?” The other Enforcer asks. “Shouldn’t we call The Lady first?”

The Enforcer who let you through shrugs. “You want to call The Lady just because her niece wants to say hi, be my guest.”

With that, you were let through. After that, any Enforcers you passed by must have assumed you had already gotten the necessary permissions since they didn’t stop you.

Eventually you reached the entrance to Lady Muramoto’s quarters. But just as you are about to knock on the door, it opens. Standing in the doorway was your aunt. She was dressed rather formally. Ah, she must have been headed to meet the guests.

“Ah, Kaguya-chan.” Lady Muramoto greets you. “May I help you?”

“Greetings, Auntie.” You bow deeply and respectfully, as befitting of a greeting to the wife of the Master of the Household. “As a matter of fact, there is indeed something you can help me with …”

You explain to your aunt what happened between you and Kuro-kun. She nods in understanding. Thankfully, she doesn’t seem too upset at the situation.

“Well, it’s good that you’re helping take care of the guests.” Aunt Muramoto says, patting you on your head. “Follow me. I have some clothes that might fit Kuro-kun somewhere, but they might take some time to find ...”

Aunt Muramoto leads you into her spacious quarters. Her quarters were more a small palace taking up an entire terrace-platform of the mountain peak. But there is little evidence of habitation. The furniture was ornate and mostly ornamental. It didn’t feel used at all.

“I’m sorry for the desolate feeling.” Aunt Muramoto says, seeming to sense what you’re feeling. “An old Lady like me rarely feels the need to leave her room and your Uncle isn’t home very often. He’s busy with work, you see?”

Aunt Muramoto leads you into a large walk-in closet, more a separate pavilion than anything else. She looks through drawers. The individual drawers looked as fine as the clothes contained inside. Each cabinet was lacquered black and gilded with artistic designs and depictions of an archaic era.

“Hmm, it’s been a while since the clothing you requested has been used, so finding it might be difficult.” Aunt Muramoto muses. She tries to open a large chest, but only manages to lift the lid halfway before it starts to fall back. You frantically rush forwards to catch it and help her open it. You know you’re quite strong for a girl your age, but an adult woman like Aunt Muramoto should have still been able to handle any load you could.

“You’ve grown into a very healthy girl.” Aunt Muramoto says, placing a hand on your head. You can’t help but notice how it shakes imperceptibly. There is the slight stickiness of sweat.

Inside the chest are several sets of small-sized boy clothes. Aunt Muramoto pulls out a finely tailored outfit, Japonisme-styled with a military cut.

“Ah, did this belong to Lord Muramoto?” You ask.

“Your Uncle?” Aunt Muramoto laughs, “No, this belonged to Kyune-chan.”

This outfit belonged to Kyune Onee-chan? Well … you had to admit that you had no idea whether it was the kind of outfit she would have worn as a kid or not. And to be fair, they looked fairly androgynous. But still, wouldn’t real boy’s clothes be more appropriate?

“Thank you, Auntie.” You politely and sweetly say.

“You’re such a good girl, Kaguya-chan.” Aunt Muramoto tells you, patting your head again. “I should have seen you sooner but well … Your Aunt is so tired nowadays …”

You fold the clothes under your arm. But as you leave the suite, Aunt Muramoto grabs you and starts to fuss over your furisode.

“Were you in a hurry running up here, Dear?” She asks as she fixes your furisode for you, “We can’t have you returning to the guests looking like that, can we?”

As soon as Aunt Muramoto stops straightening your furisode, you hug her in thanks. She takes it well, laughing gently.

“Is there anything else I can help you with, Kaguya-chan?” Aunt Muramoto asks.

You shake your head. “No. Thank you for everything.”

Your Aunt accompanies you down from the Mountain Peak. But once you reach the gardens again, she bids you farewell.

“This is where we’ll part, Kaguya-chan. I have to join the main body of guests and you have to see to that Kuro-kun.”

With that, Aunt Muramoto departs down the hall. She’s right. It was time for you to get to work.

You return to the room that you had left Kuro-kun in ... only to find that he wasn’t there anymore. But where could he have gone? You can still detect a faint trace of Kuro-kun’s smell in the air. Slowly taking in the air, you find that you might be able to follow it. To your surprise, the trail goes far down the hallways of the manor. Where had Kuro-kun been headed? But the trail continues to be clear so you follow. It leads you towards … The Kendo Hall?

That’s right. It leads right up to the doorway to the Kendo Hall. From inside, you can hear the clashing of wooden swords. You slide the door open and step inside …

“Pardon me.” You quietly mutter to yourself.

Inside the Kendo Hall, there were two figures clashing in a practise bout. To your surprise, they are Kuro-kun and Kyune Onee-chan. Kuro was dressed in a white gi while Kyune Onee-chan had shed the outermost layers of her kimono for more ease of movement. The two were crossing bokken, Kuro-kun wielding the Bokken solidly with both hands, Kyune Onee-chan swinging it with one. Of the two, it seemed like Kyune Onee-chan had the upper hand.

You witness one exchange and disengagement, with Kyune Onee-chan parrying a blow from Kuro-kun and sidestepping it at the same time so that his momentum causes him to pass by her. Kuro quickly picks himself again and readies for a counterattack, but then, as if by an inaudible signal, they both lower their swords. Even without saying anything, you had been noticed. Kyune nods in your direction.

“Looks like we have a spectator.” Kyune Onee-chan says.

“I, um, got you your clothes Kuro-kun.” You lift the bundle of clothing in your arms. But it seems that Kuro-kun has already gotten the clothes he requires. Did Kyune Onee-chan find those for him?

“Thank you, Lady Kaguya.” Kuro-kun beams.

Kyune Onee-chan glances over to see what’s going on between you and Kuro-kun. You think she recognizes her old outfit, but she refrains from commenting.

“Ah.” Kuro-kun says as if suddenly remembering something, “While you were gone, Lady Kyune stumbled across me in my poor condition and helped me find some suitable clothing.”

“I see. Well, I hope you managed to find the conversation with her you were hoping for earlier.”

“I did.” Kuro-kun affirms.

Inwardly, you can’t help but be a little miffed. If a simple training gi had been enough for Kuro-kun, then did you really need to have put in all that effort to find this outfit for him?

“So, Kuro-kun, are we going to continue our bout or not?” Kyune Onee-chan asks, bouncing her bokken on her shoulder.

“Oh yes. I had the opportunity to spar with Lady Kune, graciously offered by her.” Kuro-kun tells you.

“Hey. Maybe I was just testing if the one escorting my Kaguya-chan around could be trusted to do so.” Kyune Onee-chan says.

“In all fairness, I think it was Lady Kaguya doing the escorting.” Kuro-kun comments, before squaring off against Kyune Onee-chan …

“You got this, Kyune Onee-chan!” You cheer. Kyune Onee-chan salutes you with two fingers as she extends her bokken out with her other hand in a relaxed, sideways stance.

Kuro takes up a head-on stance, holding his bokken up vertically in front of him. You know enough about fencing to recognize that as the most basic of stances.
“Ishii Kuro, Kokusai swordsmanship school. Tokyo Branch.” Kuro-kun announces.

Kyune Onee-chan smiles. “Muramoto Kyune, Zeijaku-Ten swordsmanship school.”

It’s Kuro-kun who makes the first move. He circles Kyune, slowly and cautiously approaching her, probing her range. He tries a tentative swing, which Kyune bats away, barely having to twitch her wrists to do so. Losing patience, Kyune steps forwards, hacking at Kuro’s guard and forcing him back a step. Kuro immediately disengages and begins circling Kyune again.

The two have several more similar exchanges. Kuro-kun seems much more cautious than what you saw of him when you first entered the room. Could it be that … your presence was affecting him?

Kyune lowers her sword and laughs. “You can drop the ‘nervous’ act, Kuro-kun.”

“Ah, was it that obvious?” Kuro-kun apologizes, before taking up a much less cautious stance.

The next exchange is much more proactive on Kuro-kun’s part. He launches many more attacks aimed at Kyune instead of her blade. But you notice that Kuro-kun’s stance is relatively steady compared to Kyune, who is much lighter on her feet. But still, Kyune seemed content to only parry Kuro’s blows, only pushing back when the tempo of the exchanges slowed too much for her.

With every blow, Kyune closes the distance between her and Kuro a single step. Eventually, it’s too close for Kuro to escape by stepping back. With Kyune inside the space he needed for his footwork, there was no hope for a steady stance. With one final swing, Kyune sends Kuro tumbling to the ground, without ever having touched his body with her sword. The tip of Kyune’s bokken at his throat stopped any thoughts of rising again.

“Good effort.” Kyune Onee-chan says, “But you gotta try to control the rhythm of the action more.”

Kyune Onee-chan helps Kuro-kun to his feet. As soon as he’s up, Kuro-kun bows in thanks.

“It’s been an honor having the opportunity for a bout with the famous Muramoto Kyune.” He says.

“Yeah yeah.” Kyune waves Kuro-kun’s formality away, “You aren’t that bad yourself … And hey, you got to show off in front of Kaguya-chan too!”

At Kyune Onee-chan’s words, you blush …

>”K-Kyune Onee-channnnn!”

“Kuro-kun, you were pretty impressive.” You admit. He had been. You didn’t know enough about swordsmanship to judge his skill, but his demonstration of it had nevertheless awed you. There was a grace to swordsmanship you admired, the grace of an art you did not understand. And you doubt you ever would. There was a martial aspect to swordsmanship you didn’t think you had the right character for.

“Lady Kaguya’s compliment honors me. I hope I am truly deserving of it.” Kuro bows graciously. Unlike you, he takes the situation calmly.

“Humble fragger.” Kyune Onee-chan swears under her breath.

Fortunately, there’s an adjoined shower room for Kuro-kun to refresh himself and change in. Afterwards, the two of you seat yourselves on the tatami floor of the Kendo Hall. Kyune has since left, muttering something about checking on the rest of the guests. A Maid brings some cool barley tea, just like at the end of your archery lessons.

“Is the tea to your liking, Kuro-kun?” You ask, doing your best to play the part of a good hostess.

“Quite refreshing.” Kuro says, “However, I’m more used to hot drinks after exercise.”

“Is that so? One would think a cool drink would be more refreshing.”

“My mother believes that warm drinks are better for your health.” Kuro-kun explains, leaning back. “Just an old-fashioned belief I put up with to ease my mother’s mind. Surely you can understand?”

“I … see.” You nod. You didn’t really understand though …

Sitting like this, drinking Barley Tea, your thoughts can’t help but drift to those who shared moments like this with you before. Toshi-kun … And Kentaro-kun. Both of them had been the only warm and friendly people in your life on a daily basis. But now, they were both gone …

A small shadow passes over your face. But even as quick as it is to disappear, it isn’t beyond Kuro-kun’s astute notice.

“Is something wrong, Lady Kaguya?” Kuro-kun asks.

“Hmm? Why would you ask that? There isn’t anything wrong at all …” You insist, not entirely convincingly.

Kuro-kun frowns. “If it’s something I did, I would like to know so I may ask your forgiveness.”

“No, it’s not something you did.” You say truthfully this time, and at the same time admitting that something was wrong.

“Well, I won’t pry …” Kuro-kun says gently, “But still, it’s so beautiful a day for gloominess. So if you can find it in yourself to be gloomy today, then it must be quite serious.”

“Is today really such a beautiful day?” You say bitterly. You know it isn’t proper for you as a hostess to express such personal and unpleasant emotions, but you can’t help yourself.

You notice that Kuro-kun has moved ever so slightly closer to you, close enough that you can feel his body heat. He’s looking at straight in the eyes, his face a perfect mask of concern and sympathy. Or was it genuine concern and sympathy and you could not tell? You don’t know.

“”Lady Kaguya, you’re crying.” Kuro-kun says.

“Am I?” You ask, feeling a small tear escape your composure to gather at the corner of your eye.

Slowly, tentatively, Kuro-kun extends a silk-clad finger to wipe away the tear. But he stops just short of it, waiting for your permission.

“I’m sorry.” You mutter, gently pulling away from Kuro-kun. You take a deep breath, steeling yourself until you’re sure that you have a grasp on your composure again. “How inappropriate of me as a Hostess, having you have to sit so patiently through that … unpleasantness.”

“Pay me no mind.” Kuro-kun says, “Are you … sure you’re feeling fine now?”

“Yes, I am.’ You say, half-honestly. What you meant was that you weren’t in any danger of losing your composure again.

“I apologize if I was too forwards in my behaviour earlier, Lady Kaguya.” Kuro-kun says, withdrawing his finger. Unlike his affable demeanour before, his voice has changed, becoming much more formal and polite, but also more distant.

The atmosphere between the two of you becomes strained and awkward, losing the relaxed feeling it had had before.

“Perhaps we should return to the main group.” You suggest.

“That might be a good idea …” Kuro-kun agrees.

When the two of you return to the group, the tour is just about wrapping up. In fact, you catch up with them at the front door. Lady Muramoto and Yuling Ishii is engaging the guests with the mandatory just-before-farewells conversation while Aunt Muramoto and Kyune Onee-chan were nowhere to be seen.

“Ah, they showed up just in time.” Lady Muramoto says, nodding at the two of you. You notice that Yuling Ishii doesn’t do much to acknowledge Kuro-kun’s presence.

“Well, we’ll take our leave now. Thank you for having us, the tour was quite wonderful.” Yuling Ishii says. She and Lady Muramoto politely exchange bows as the Ishiis depart. And now, it is time for you to bid farewell to Kuro-kun too.

“It was a pleasure making your acquaintance, Lady Kaguya.” Kuro-kun says. “Until we meet again?”

“We’ll see if we meet each other there.” The two of you exchange polite bows.

“Say hello to the moon rabbits for me, will you?” Kuro-kun jokes.

You watch the Ishiis climb into a luxurious looking supercar. Then the door closes.

“My, that was a wonderful visit.” Lady Muramoto sighs. “Miss Ishii is simply charming. We visited the Manor’s flower gardens, admired the art collections …”

“The girl there was mean …” Seru-chan whines.

“She was Brother-dearest, she was.” Teru-chan sighs in agreement.

“Hush, you two. It’s rude to disparage guests, even when they’ve left.” Winslet-san scolds.

“Well I admit their daughter was a little on the misbehaving side … But still ...” Lady Muramoto sighs, “I think me and Miss Ishii get along very well. And Kaguya seems to have made a friend!”

“Apologies, Lady Muramoto …” Winslet-san interrupts, “I must borrow Lady Kaguya for a … debriefing.”

Winslet-san leads you away into a side room.

“So, I understand you were performing your role as a hostess with that Ishii boy, weren’t you?” Winslet-san asks, “It wouldn’t have been my first decision to leave the two of you alone, but as things turned out, that is what happened. So? How did his visit go?”

“Lady Kyune did what?” Winslet-san shrieks, before taking several deep breaths to calm herself. “Are … are you sure? That’s quite the diplomatic faux-pas, even for a girl like Lady Kyune.”

“I was there when they crossed blades.” You confirm.

“But still. A duel with real swords?” Winslet-san exclaims, “What if Kuro-kun was injured?”

Well, Kuro-kun and Kyune had been using wooden swords. But you guess you couldn’t cause enough clothing damage to warrant a change of clothes with a bokken. You’ll have to commit further to this lie then.

“Don’t you know? It’s a custom in the Muramoto Family to duel with live steel.”

“Well … I suppose that is true.” Winslet-san relents, “And I suppose you can’t be reasonably expected to keep Lady Kyune as doing as she pleases … Well if that’s the case, then you’re not at fault for anything, Lady Kaguya. Although, I’ll still have to check with Lady Kyune for her side of the story.”

“I-is Kyune Onee-chan in trouble?” You ask.

Winslet-san scoffs. “She might be. But it won’t be from me. I’m not her governess.”

With that, Winslet-san leaves. It seems that you are safe for now.

I'm not so heartless as to leave her out in the rain without an umbrella. Love the gal too much.

You know that Winslet-san won’t be able to talk to Kyune Onee-chan right away. She had responsibilities as a governess and couldn’t be away from her charges for too long. You’d be free to visit Kyune Onee-chan, which was good since the more time passed before you did, the more likely it grew that Winslet-san would talk to Kyune Onee-chan before you told her of how you had involved her in your lie.

Fortunately for you, Kyune Onee-chan hasn’t gotten far since the end of the tour. You catch up with her in the hallway.

“Huh? Kaguya?” Kyune stares, seeming to notice that you had been running. “What, need something?”

“Kyune Onee-chan, can I talk to you?” You ask.

“Sure.” Kyune Onee-chan shrugs casually.

“In private.” You clarify.

Kyune tilts her head, before shrugging. “Fine by me …”

Kyune Onee-chan leads you to a secluded garden, far away from any walls that might hide ears listening or otherwise.

“So? What’s up?” Kyune Onee-chan asks.

“Well …” You begin nervously, “I may have lied to Winslet-san about you.”

You slowly and carefully explain your lie to Winslet-san. Kyune Onee-chan nods, seeming to take the news well.

“Well, you could work on your lie’s plausibility, but it’s believable enough.” Kyune Onee-chan says.

“So you’re not angry?”

“Nah. You had a totally believable reason for it.” Kyune Onee-chan smiles, rubbing your head.

You sigh in relief, before another worry rises in your head. “You won’t get in trouble, will you?”

Kyune shrugs. “Well, I’m the first child of this branch, so if I do it’ll be less serious than if you did. So ah well.”

“I don’t want you getting in trouble on my behalf.” You tell Kyune.

“Eh, it won’t be too serious.” She shrugs, before tousling your hair. “Don’t worry, I’ll handle Winslet-san for you, alright?”

You smile and hug Kyune Onee-chan. She really was sister to you …

Short thread, but I just wanted to wrap things up from the hastily abandoned last thread and this seemed like a good place to close off. I didn't want to start the next day here and be stuck in an endless loop of ending threads halfway through Kaguya's day.

Anyways, new thread whenever this one drops off.

Kyune is precious. When she becomes the family head,, we'll have to become her right-hand woman and serve her loyally.
Just need to get rid of the 14.25% chance of a critfail on every roll somehow.
