(First time quest, feedback welcome. Let's have some fun.)

So, let's get started. You look a bit older than most people who call looking to go on a journey for the first time, but that's no problem.

Anyway, are you a boy or a girl?
>>
Boy. Fuck whores.
>>
>>4911799
This.
>>
Sorry about that, but most people are a good deal younger than you when they set out, as I'm sure you're aware.

Anyway, tell me about yourself: How's the family?

>Lived with parents in town.
>Lived with grandparents on a farm. They're gone now.
>Single Mum\Dad on a small farm.
>Orphan (Recent or Always)

I was raised by a single mother. So let's not be a fuck up like me.

Oh, well that's nice.

How are they doing?

>Alright, can't complain.

Yes, 15 brothers, 15 sisters
Selling pokemon in an underground death arena

Well, that must be eventful.

I hope that those accusations are a big misunderstanding though. Team Cracker are a shady bunch of thugs.

So, you'd be the oldest then?
>Yes, I'm the oldest. I just figured I'd go off later, because school.
>No, I'm the (x). My brother/sister has already been on a journey.

>>4911835
>Yes, I'm the oldest. I just figured I'd go off later, because school.

Ah, very responsible of you. I'll bet your parents were glad for the help as well.

Still, you must've had some hobbies? You can't have just slaved away over textbooks all this time?
(May pick any two.)
>Yeah, I was a Junior Ranger.
>Yeah, I used to help out on a farm.
>Yeah, I studied martial arts. (Type?)
>Yeah, I was part of a chess club.

You sure did keep active. I've never heard of that particular style, but it sounds like you've got a bit of an action hero dream there, huh?

Still, you must have a story or two, even without a journey, right? A scrap or two? Maybe you got in over your head?

>Nope, I was kind of a goodie two-shoes.
>I got in a big fight once with a local bully and his mates.

No need to jump to conclusions if you don't want to, OP! I don't feel slighted!

I did have a question though: for decisions in this quest are you doing 'first come, first serve', or are you tallying votes after a certain amount of time? Just wanted to know in advance as we continue.
>>
I'm tallying votes.

Trying to keep it to about the five minute mark, but after that, I'm going first in, first served just to keep the ball rolling.

Seems like the best policy to me.

Where dice rolls are concerned, it's going to be the higher the better.

You've also got stats that'll give you a bonus that are based on the choices you've made.

So far, you're pretty good all around, just not really much of a people person.

(For the sake of argument, you've got a really sturdy towel and a really nice tent. Look after 'em!)

A towel...? Oookay... Well, I've heard of frying pans and flutes, so I guess everyone gets sentimental about something.

That's a really roomy looking tent as well.

I suppose that just leaves one last question:

Do you have any pokemon already?

>No. (Pick a starter.)
>No, but I think I'll be alright to find one. (Go try to catch something by yourself.)
>Yes, it's a (semi-rare pokemon) I got for my birthday a few years ago. We're the best of friends.
>Yes a (rare pokemon) I saved a few years ago. I got hurt in the process though.

The professor looks at you over steepled hands.

"Well, if you say so. I doubt any pokemon around Greenshoot is going to give you much trouble." He concedes, then straightens as he produces a pokedex, a trainer card off the printer and five poke balls. "There we are." He said, then smacks himself in the forehead. "Alexander." You reply, taking the man's hand to shake before entering the relevant information onto the card.

"A pleasure to make your acquaintance, young man." Professor Conifer replies. "If I may, where are you planning to look for pokemon?"

You decide that the best place to start is the old factory in the industrial park on the edge of town. It's been a few years since the old man who ran it died and ever since, it's fallen into disrepair.

It's a bit of a walk, but an hour or two later, you find yourself at an old side-door that's propped in its frame.

You can see some Pidgey resting in the eaves, so you know you're in the right place.

You lift the door up and set it aside against the wall.

Inside the garage, it's fairly neat and orderly. If it weren't for the dust, you'd swear the old owner had just stepped out for lunch.

Towards the back of the shop, you here something creak and thump as it's knocked.

Creeping over to get a better view, you see a big, fluffly tail disappearing into a storage room towards the back.

"Hey there." You say, inching back a bit, leaving the food at the door so it has some space.

The pokemon aproaches cautiously, before falling on the treats ravenously, before looking at you with those big, adorable eyes.

(No stress)

"You liked that, huh?" You ask as you scratch the strange pokemon between the ears, earning a happy mew as it leans into your touch as you pull out a pokeball with your other hand.

The pokemon looks at it curiously, before you press it to it's brow and it disappears in a flash.

You put the ball down quickly and step back.

It rocks once... twice... thrice...*click*.

you grin like an idiot as you retrieve the ball and after some fumbling, let out your new friend.

Belatedly, you check your new pokedex.

"*Eevee.*" It says dispassionately. "*It can evolve into one of eight different pokemon.*"

That's pretty incredible. But you wonder if you'd want to. This little guy is adorable, looking up at you like that.

You resume petting and shake some more treats out onto the concrete.

You decide that before anything else, you should head into town.

Before that though, there's something else to take care of.

"I'm goingto call you Fluffy, I think." You say as you continue to scratch your new Eevee's ears.

You earn another happy mew in respone. You smile again.

You can't stick around all day though. You stand and head out, Eevee following at your heels as you head towards the centre of town.

You've just about figured out what you need to do and you're about to head into the general store when the door opens and you find yourself face to face with your dear old 'friend' Mike. He seems just as surprised to see you as you are to see him, especially midmorning like this.

You take a moment to take an inventory of what you've got:

You have general supplies, but now you think about it, your boots are a bit on the worn side.
You could probably do with a knife and some rope as well.
Your tent is big and warm, but now you think about it, a new sleeping bag and a tent carpet wouldn't go astray. Most of Arnet is pretty arid, but it can get *cold* at night.
And now you look, you don't have a shovel either. Between that and your camp grill, pots and utensils having gone walking since last you checked, it's probably a blessing in disguise you bumped into Mike. Fancy that.

You grab all the items you want and head up to the counter. After a brief discussion with the clerk, you're also the proud owner of a survival knife.

As you pack your things, you double check again just to make sure you haven't forgotten anything.
>An axe. Whoops. It'd be awful cold without one.
>New clothes. These town clothes aren't going to last a week.

It's not long before you're opening the door. Chloe and Tom have already left for school, where you still think you really ought to be and Mum's already gone to the Pokemon Centre to start work, but Dad's here, keeping the house running. Normally, he'd be off working at the local hardware store.

Dad grins. "Really?"

"Hey, why not?" You reply, scooping Fluffy up. "I can be whimsical if I want to be."

"Just take care on the road. And don't go trying to take the cross-country tracks." He advises.

"I'll be careful." You assure. "Say goodbye to Mum for me?"

"I'll do that." There's a long, awkward pause. "...I'll try to be back for Christmas." You say, feeling that tightness redouble and-

-No, no, no, no. you are absolutely *not* going to start crying now.

"I'll do that." Dad assures, politely ignoring the tears you shed regardless. "You'd best get going." He advises. "And don't be a stranger." He adds.

You turn your back and go behind the tree, leaving your towel on the ground. The sound of water moving tells you she's come out of the water and grabbed the towel. You feel the urge to try peeking for a moment, but dismiss it. Being a teenager is a curse sometimes.

"Why were you even in there? The water around here is freezing."

"It's not that bad." The girl replies from the other side of the tree. "Besides, it's a nice day, I thought I might go for a swim."

That is a fair point. It is a nice day.

So, just real quick while I'm eating:

Any feedback?

Also, as mentioned, my image library is practically non-existent, so feel free to help me fix that.
>>
>>4913357
A few quick tips

1. It might help to make the updates a bit larger content wise
2. I'd wait longer between votes, like 30ish minutes personally
3. If you still like running the fast paced sessions, I would give people a general "heads up, we'll start around X time today/tomorrow"

Otherwise this is pretty fun so far, that stuff is all just minor. Excited to see where the quest goes
>>
>>4913360
1. Will do, just got to get used to 2nd person and stop being a lazy bum.
2. I think I might, at least for the time being. If this somehow blows up, I'll go back to the five\ten minute gaps.
3. My plan is to run these on a Sunday morning AEST, since it's about the only day I can really guarantee I'll be free.

As to where this goes... I've got a few ideas. Besides the League, there's Team Cracker to look into and a few different legends for the curious.

And back on the images thing for a second: Ideally, I'd like to keep things to 'public\stock' unless an artist gives permission or feels inspired. Hence images being sparse.

That being said, anyone wants to make up the deficit, knock yourself out. I'll post the relevant info up top next time.

"I guess." You say, scratching your chin, starting at the feel of fine hair. "I mean, I could use some more pokemon." You reason.

There's a sigh from the other side of the tree.

"Arceus, I never thought I'd meet one like you." You get the impression she's shaking her head. "Whatever took my stuff has probably run off into the scrub on the other other side of the path." She says. "You'll know my stuff when you find it: A red carry bag, a belt of six poke balls, a leather jacket and a yellow T-shirt, a pair of jeans and a pair of knee-high riot boots." She lists.

Sounds simple enough.

"Alright, I'll be back in a bit." You assure, heading across the track to the rocks you noted earlier with a wave.

Once you're there, you're confronted with dense scrub on the other side of the rocks and as if to confirm you're on the right track, a wallet bearing an embossed flame emblem and a yellow T-shirt.

With a shrug, you fold up the shirt, let Fluffy out of his ball then start clearing a path through the brush, looking out for any more dropped items or tracks.

After about five minutes, your efforts are rewarded... with a sports bra caught on a fallen log.

She didn't mention losing a bra...

With a shrug, you fold it and tuck it into your bag with the shirt before you continue on.

Gimme three rolls.

>(68) You have no trouble clearing your way through the brush. It's slow going, even with your knife, but you do find the young woman's jacket and boots as you go. Fluffy even finds the jeans, discarded off the side of what you're fairly sure is a well-worn path for a small pokemon down under the curtain of bracken.

(19) Then, at the base of a tree, you find the red carry bag. This is definitely the home of the culprit.

You stow the knife and start shaking the tree.

There's a squawk of surprise and you jump back as a belt of pokeballs and a fat, grey-brown pokemon with an unkempt tail falls out of the tree, along with what you recognise as two Oran Berries.

Looks like this is could be your first proper battle.

"Fluffy, Tail Whip!" You order, mentally reviewing the moves the pokedex said he had.

He obeys, that big, fluffy tail waving cutely, as what you recognise as a Skwovet mirrors him.

They both relax slightly, clearly disarmed by the other's display.

"Now, Tackle." You order.

This is a lot less... hectic... than you imagined. You've chased these pests off of the Leppa tree in the backyard hundreds of times.

...Something doesn't feel right.

Give me two rolls.

(You guys are on fire)
(98)You look around the surrounding brush and trees carefully as the Skwovet retaliates with a Tackle of its own, skidding Fluffy back into the brush.

(90)With a sinking feeling, you realise you’re surrounded by Skwovet.

Dammit, where there’s one, there’s always half a dozen more. You’ve chased them enough to know that! At least there doesn't seem to be a Greedent in this colony. Yet. Which, this far off the main trail is a minor miracle.

Even so, Fluffy isn't winning this fight by himself if the Skwovet's friends get involved.

Fluffy bounds forward, ducks down and slams, shoulder-first into the Skwovet, lifting it bodily off the ground and bouncing it off the tree, resulting in a rapid [i}thud-thud-thud of berries hitting the ground around you.

Then your vision is obscured momentarily as as something else falls past your eyes to your feet.

The Skwovet you're fighting is barely standing as you swoop in and grab the stolen poke balls, then step back.

You notice that whatever fell out of the tree and blinded you is now caught on your boot as you look at the Skwovet and back to the trail behind you.

Do you try and catch the Skwovet, or make a run for it? You can see the other Skwovet moving in and you can hear them chittering. There's also a small bounty of berries on the ground.

Nope. You've got what you came here for. It's time to leave.

You recall Fluffy, and haul ass.

Your efforts at clearing the brush pay dividends and you're back at the rocks before you know it, leaving the Skwovets far behind you.

Now you've got a moment, you breathe a sigh of relief as you mentally run down the checklist of items the girl gave you to find:

Boots? Check.
T-Shirt? Check.
Bag and poke balls? Check.
Jeans and jacket? Check.

And as an added bonus, you found what you can only assume is her wallet and bra.

Question now is, do you head right back to her or do something else.

With a shrug, you head back immediately, to find the redhead sat under the tree wrapped up in your towel, shivering and apparently maintaining her patience by the slimmest of margins.

Now that you see her out of the water, you can tell she keeps active. She's almost as tall as you are to boot and with the way she carries yourself, you get the impression she can handle herself quite well without much help.

"You got everything? Great." She said, taking back her bag, before she gives you a meaningful look. "If you're lookin' for a reward, it's not goin' to be a look at my boobs." She says pointedly. "Some privacy. P-" She stops and looks down at your boots.

The next thing you know, you're flat on your back, she's got your leg in one hand and she's retrieving what you identify as a pair of panties from around your ankle with a look of distinct annoyance on her face, before she disappears behind the tree herself.

"Peek and die." She warns as you pick yourself up.

“It was a skwovet colony that took your stuff.” You say as you pick yourself up. She’s fast. You didn’t even see her move before she had you on the ground. “They were kind of pissed when I left.”

“You’re sooo brave.” The girl says sarcastically. You get the feeling she thinks you’re fishing for complements or a reward.

You want to ask for your towel back, but so close to the road, she still needs it.

“I’ll… be down by the creek.” You say into the awkward silence, before heading down the bank and away from her.

“Don’t fall in.” She advises as you pick your way down the bank, releasing Fluffy as you go.

Without a rod, it’s going to be a pain to catch anything, but you could get lucky.

You open your pokedex and scan up ahead where Fluffy is sniffing at the newcomer and just received a face full of silken string for his trouble.

"*Sewaddle. It makes clothes for itself out of chewed-up leaves and its sticky silk.*"

Huh. Neat. Along with the voiced factoid, there's a heap of other information in the datafile, including links to the files on Sewaddle's evolutions. You didn't notice when you were catching Fluffy, but there must've been similar links in that entry as well.

The question now is, whether to catch it or not.

Fluffy obliges, having already tried once after receiving the wad of silk to the face from the Sewaddle.

Now, they crash into each other, the Sewaddle having decided to Tackle Fluffy in turn.

Fluffy’s starting to look a little rough, after having fought the Skwovet previously and now this, but Sewaddle definitely felt that.

The ball rocks once, twice, a third time, then rolls into the water as it clicks.

Whoops.

You shake your head as you go retrieve it, giving a tired Fluffy a scratch behind the ears and earning another pleased mew from him as you wipe the ball off.

You’ll have to think of a name for your new buddy.

After a moment’s thought and after reviewing the pokedex data one more time, you decide to name your new friend Syurm. With that out of the way, you decide to head back and see if that girl is done changing yet before you keep looking for more pokemon.

When you turn around however, it’s to find the girl standing there with a bemused expression with your towel folded up neatly under one arm.

“How long have you been a trainer?” She asks with the hint of a smile on her face.

“Huh.” She says. “And how old are you?”

“Seventeen.” You reply, defensively.

“Hey, no judgement.” She says, putting up her hands. “You want to put school first, good for you.” She says, though as she says that, she’s shaking her head incredulously. “I’m just kind of surprised a guy who looks like he’s a draft pick for the football wasn’t a knuckle-dragging show-off.” She admits, then hands your towel back. “...Thanks.” She says. “The name’s Fie. I guess I owe you one for the loan. ...And getting my clothes back.” She adds.

Fie smiles when she hears the name.

“That’s adorable.” She says. “...Anyway, I guess I’ll see you around sometime?” She more asks than says. “I’ve got to get going back to Saltcoast City.” She explains.

“Do you want some company on the road?” You ask. “That’s a long way.”

“Yeah, I guess.” She says after a moment’s thought. “I just got done visiting my brother at the Gym. I forgot how nice having someone to talk to outside of work can be.” She adds.

“...Greenshoot doesn’t have a pokemon Gym.” You say. “It’s got a normal…” You stop.

Motherfucker.

You’ve been into the town gym heaps. It’s where Capoeira classes were held and you worked out there often enough as well. This is the first you’re hearing of it being a pokemon gym as well.

“Yeah, that’s my big brother.” Fie confirms with a nod. “He thought it was a terrific joke when he got given the Normal gym slot.” She adds.

You just groan at the terrible pun.

This leaves an interesting conundrum: Where do you go from here?

But more importantly: What are you going to do now?

You expect Fie to snark at you for this decision but she nods understandingly.

"It is and for the last few years." She confirms. "It’s not ‘home’ though. That’s Redmont. Always will be, for better or for worse.” She adds. “Still, Saltcoast isn’t bad in the off-season. Kind of annoying when the tourists roll in though."

You're about to ask her more about the city when out in front of you, a Rattata bolts across the path, followed closely by a blue blur, before the Rattata disappears off the other side of the path, leaving the hunter preyless.

You stare in disbelief.

You've heard of the Luxray of the Divide but you always laughed it off as a country tall tale, like Old King Bob or the Beast of Lake Clarity.

Yet standing in front of you is a Shinx.

If you don't catch it, no one will ever believe you. If you catch it though, they still won't believe it, but you'll have proof.

Fluffy bounds forward at your order, but the Shinx springs to the side, before lunging in and Tackling him itself, lifting him bodily with the force of the impact.

Fluffy cries out as he lands, before struggling to his feet, panting heavily.

"Withdraw him." Fie says, urgently, almost ordering you.

"Syurm, Stringshot." You order as the Shinx starts to prowl around Syurm, apparently in no way put off after having lost two 'meals' in as many minutes.

"There's plenty of trees around here." Fie notes. "Syurm would be pretty safe in one, even in the lower branches." She observes as Syurm sprays a wad of silk into the Shinx's face, making it recoil and thrash, trying to dislodge the stuff.

"Syurm, up into the trees!" You order as the Shinx pounces again.

It meets empty air as Syurm spits a sticky thread at a branch and hauls herself up it, fetching up perched on the branch in full sun, before spitting more sticky silk at the Shinx as it looks around, confused as to where its prey just went.

With the Shinx so gunked up, it's an easy throw to make.

The ball rocks once, then clicks.

Is that it?

"Nice work, Ace." Fie says, giving you a punch in the arm. "It's a good thing we're headed back to Greenshoot though." She notes. "Syurm and Fluffy aren't lookin' too crash hot. And you're probably going to want to give that Shinx a bath before anything. Get in his good graces." She advises as you recall Syurm, praising her for a job well done.

Once again, that's a pretty solid idea. Fie seems to be full of those.

It's two hours' walk back to Greenshoot, but you're sure you can make it in one if you hurry.

“So, how long have you been a trainer?” You ask after a few minutes making up lost time.

“Me?” Fie asks, then shrugs. “About five years. I got sick of Dad’s bullshit and decided I’d follow the rest of the family’s lead.” She explains. “Mum’s works in Galeport. Daniel left on his journey when he was sixteen. I was twelve.” She grimaces. “If it weren’t for a band of drovers, I probably wouldn’t have lasted a week.” She concedes. “Still, they got me to Halfway City and made sure I was set and Mum made sure Daniel looked out for me until I could look after myself.” She recounts with misty eyed nostalgia.

And you thought your family had issues with this whole business with your Dad being implicated in a gang.

“What does your mum do?” You ask, curiously.

You recall Galeport as being one of the oldest cities in the Arnet region and the busiest, rivalled only by Newport and Halfway City.

“She’s a director at a shipping company.” Fie replies. “She’s also the city’s gym leader.” She adds.

You do a double take at that. She grins at the look on your face.

“Yep, my mother is Wendy, the Storm Queen.” Fie says proudly.

You stare a moment longer, then shake your head.

“So, your mother and brother are both Gym Leaders? That’s got to be a lot of pressure.” You observe. “Are you trying to reach that point as well?” You ask.

She laughs.

“No.” She says, grinning. “I guess you don’t follow the League much then? I already am a Gym Leader.” She adds, stopping and drawing herself up dramatically. “Fie, the Blazing Sun.” She says, then chuckles. “It’s bit of a joke among all the Gym Leaders that they’re muscling in on the family business.” She chuckles. “All four of us are Gym Leaders, even Dad.” She explains.

Huh.

“Nothing quite as dramatic for me.” You say with a chuckle, shaking your head. “I’m the oldest of three. I’ve got a brother and a sister, twelve and fifteen respectively, Mum works at the pokemon centre and Dad…”

“It’s complicated?” Fie guesses wryly.

“You could say that.” You admit. “I mean, he’s not an ass or anything just… recent troubles.” You say waving a hand vaguely.

“Well, if he’s not an ass, it’ll work itself out.” Fie reasons. “That why you decided to become a trainer today?” She asks. “Too awkward at home? Family need the money now? Or were you planning on going and having some fun and doing some self-discovery and getting some real-world experience regardless?”

>Yeah, things have been kind of awkward at home

“Damn. You don’t need that sort of stress on a journey.” Fie says, shaking her head. “Still, I doubt you’re going to have much trouble. The League circuit is pretty lucrative.” She assures. “You’ll be flush before you know it, even sending half of it home.”

Well that’s good news at least. Doubly so when you remember that you’re running painfully low on money after you filled out your camping gear this morning.

“Alright, so once you’re done at the pokemon centre, how about we go half and half on the supplies?” Fie offers.

“Sounds good.” You agree. “We can sit down and make a list of what we need and go from there.” You add.

“Organised and responsible.” Fie notes. “How did you not have a girlfriend with you when you found me?” She wonders, much to your embarrassment.

You blush, though you’re not sure whether it’s at her attitude or what she said exactly.

Food for a week (mostly dried or preserved)

You talk things over with her and you come up with a shopping list. It's lengthy, but she insists on covering half of it and on suggesting some extra items you're going to need.

Mostly healing items and more poke balls.

"This is a lot." You note as you review the list back.

"Trust me, we're going to need it." Fie says seriously. "Don't worry your pretty head about the money, either." She added warningly. "Like I said, it's my job to help trainers get started."

Further conversation is suspended as you focus on getting back to town as fast as possible. You want to make the most of the daylight that's left.

Your very first stop is the pokemon center, which you're kind of dreading.

It's pretty quiet when you get in there and you and Fie walk straight up to the counter to find your Mum waiting for you.

"Hey, Alex." She says cheerfully. "I was expecting you to be half way to Route 2 by now." She admits.

"Things didn't quite go to plan." You admit as you hand over your poke balls.

“Oh well. Just keep trying.” She suggests, before smiling. “And who’s this?” She asks, politely, but with enough interest to make you fidget.

“I’m Fie.” Fie introduces. “Your son helped me out of a bit of a bind on the road.” She explains. “Looks like we’re going to be travelling together. At least, for a while.” She adds.

The look on your Mum’s face is pleased and a little excited. Which makes you very nervous.

“I’m glad to hear it.” Your Mum says. “Alex has always been a bit stiff and standoffish. It’s nice to know he’ll be travelling with a friend.” She adds.

“Oh?” Fie says, leaning on the counter, grinning impishly. “Do tell…”

“I’ll, er… go get started on the shopping.” You say lamely.

“Here.” Your Mum says, fishing out her phone before transferring you some money. “Consider this my helping you along your way.” She says, before her and Fie fall to talking.

You decide to just stick to what's on the list, but you decide that some berries won't hurt. You settle on some Leppa and Pecha Berries to cover the more common status ailments.

Once you've paid for what you agreed you'd buy, you're down most of the money your mother gave you, but you've still got more than you had when you walked into the poke centre. Just.

As you head out the door, you're once again confronted by Mike.

"What's a prissy faggot like you doing, strutting around town like you own the place?" He demands, giving you a shove, taking advantage of your full shopping bags to get a cheap shot in. "Well? Answer me, nerd!" He demands, going to shove you again.

>Duck.

"Sure, you outside of town, you wouldn't last five minutes!" Mike says, hurrying to catch up again.

Arceus, he's a tool. Always has been, but he's gotten worse as time goes on.

You’re so tempted to challenge Mike to a battle, but you decide against it.

He’s thick as a brick, but that doesn’t mean he’s not doing this with some goal in mind and you wouldn’t put it past him to be trying to antagonise you precisely because he’s gotten a strong pokemon off of a relative or something and is trying to goad you into a battle.

With that in mind, the smartest move is to not play.

You head into the pokemon centre, place the shopping on a table and start sorting it ready to join you. Fie comes over and starts helping just as Mike joins in.

“I’m talking to you, faggot.” He says, coming over and shoving you. “Think you’re better than me just because you’re leaving town?” He whips out a black and yellow poke ball. “Battle me.” He says triumphantly.

“Oh, you’re a trainer?” Fie says behind him, smiling coldly. “I’m afraid Alex’s team is being looked at right now, but I’ll battle you.” She says.

Mike rounds on her, looks her up and down, then snorts.

“Sure, might as well fork over your money now though.” He boasts.

You almost feel sorry for the poor idiot. Almost.

The two head outside and after a moment's thought, you head out as well.

This ought to be good.

There's a small arena around the side of the Centre and when you get there, the two are already in their positions and have settled the bet. It looks like it's going to be a one-on-one match.

Mike releases first, revealing his pokemon to be a Kangaskhan.

Fie just sighs, taking her time choosing her counter.

"Flareon, Will-o-wisp." She orders as she releases a pokemon you recognise from the pokedex as one of Eevee's potential evolutions.

"Stomp." Mike order's confidently, but he looks taken aback by how fast Fie's Flareon is. His Kangaskhan is burned before it so much as twitches.

Its stomp is less effective than you'd credit as well.

"Okay Flareon, no reason to drag this out. Sunny Day." Fie says and suddenly, the sun is as glarey and hot as if it were high summer instead of late autumn.

"Alright, Focus Energy." Mike says, even as you take a few steps back. You're no expert, but if you had to bet, Fie won before she made a move and not just because of the skill and experience gap.

"Mega Kick." Mike orders.

"Flare Blitz." Fie says, supremely unconcerned.

The two pokemon move simultaneously, Kangaskhan's huge kick missing by a mile as Flareon bursts into flames, the heat of which you can feel from where you're stood, then bounds forward and tackles Kangaskhan full in the chest, sending it crashing out of the arena next to a stunned looking Mike.

"The fuck was that for, you stuck up bitch?" He explodes.

"A lesson." Fie says non-chalantly. "Be careful who you pick a fight with. They might just take issue with your attitude." She says, before throwing a second poke ball, releasing a tall, red and orange avianoid pokemon which your pokedex helpfully identifies as a Blaziken.

"I could've been a complete and total ass like you were being just now." She says pointedly as her Blaziken walks to her side, staring Mike down. "Or, I could've used Litleo or Skrelp to beat you instead." She adds pointedly, handing up the poke balls in question. "Instead, I decided to take you seriously."

"But you just-"

"Did to you exactly what you were trying to do to Alex." Fie finished pointedly. "Grow up. If you're actually serious about training and you keep this attitude up, you are not going to have a fun time." She adds, before heading back towards the centre, jerking her chin at you with the clear expectation to follow.

"He's always been a pain in the ass." You say with an indifferent shrug. "To everyone he has even the slightest disagreement with." You add.

You're pretty sure he's failed the trainer test about ten times, but that's just rumour so you don't mention it.

"Okay, so he's just an asshole." Fie waved a hand dismissively. "Good to know. Hopefully this is the last we see of him." She adds as you pack the first lot of groceries into your bags.

You're not so sure, but you don't say anything as your mum calls you up to get your pokemon. Mike stumps in immediately afterward and loudly demands to be served.

He's been banned before for his bad attitude and by the look on your mum's face, he's on the right track to being banned again.

She takes his pokemon, informs him that it's going to take a bit, then leaves, leaving Mike standing there. He looks over to you and Fie, then snorts and goes to take a seat nearby.

"Right, I'm going to go get my half of the groceries." Fie says. "Cinder'll make sure the idiot doesn't bother you." She adds, gesturing to her Blaziken, who gives you a nod.

She looks like she's about to add more, but instead, she just gives you a thumbs up and goes to do her own half of the shopping, leaving her Blaziken with you.

You decide that, all things considered, you should probably get to know your team before you try doing any training.

This in mind, you release them all in the court and bring out the poke treats.

They crowd around you expectantly, no fighting or competing for your attention as you play with them, before they start playing among themselves and pestering Cinder, who takes the attention in stride.

As you watch them try coaxing the Blaziken into playing, you get a sense for their personalities:

Fluffy is Quiet and seems content to wait to be noticed.
Syurm is Relaxed and seems content to go along with whatever the other two are doing.
Your Shinx, whom you really need to think of a name for, seems like she's going to be a bit of a ringleader though. She wants Cinder to play with them and doesn't seem to want to take no for an answer. You might even call her Adamant.

Yeah, you probably ought to name her now, while you think about it.

You decide to rough house with your team a bit, coaxing them into tackling you, but gently. It's good practice for them and good practice for you as you gently deflect them away from you with pulled palm strikes.

You lose track of time after a while, until you're distracted as Chloe and Tom hurry up, allowing all three of your team to pile onto you at the same time, knocking you flat.

"I guess you didn't get very far, huh Alex?" Chloe asks, looking down at you as Tom, never really one for personal space, swoops in and pulls Volta into a hug.

"Er, Tom you might want to be careful." You warn as Volta struggles and crackles with electricity warningly.

"Oh, right." He says sheepishly, putting her down. She looks every bit like an affronted cat as she stalks off to groom herself after the rough handling. "So, when are you going?" He asks curiously.

"At this point, probably tomorrow." Fie says as she returns, loaded down with groceries in addition to Cinder, who you don't remember leaving.

Wow, you really must've gotten into a groove. It's late.

"Huh. Not even been a full day yet and you've finally got a girlfriend?" Chloe observes. "Not bad, bro."

You blush and Fie stares at your sister incredulously, who is completely unrepentant.

"I take it this is your sister?" She guesses.

"Uh-huh. I'm Chloe." She replies.

"So... yeah. My brother and sister." You say lamely as you start sorting and packing this second lot of supplies.

"She's a good sister, looking out for her big brother like that." Fie observes.

"I guess." You reply, embarrassed.

"Anyway, it's getting late." Fie observes. "We going to try making some progress down the road, or are we crashing here for the night?"

You go say goodbye to Mum, before you set off again. You see Mike lurking by the road on your way out, but aside from flipping you off, he doesn't do anything.

You don't hurry, but you don't dawdle and by the time the sun hits the horizon, you're more or less back where you met Fie that afternoon.

You keep going. It's practically dark by the time you find a good site, but fortunately, it seems to be a regularly used one. It's a nice, big, cleared area off the road, with half an old barrel marking a fire pit.

You quickly get a small fire going, then set up your tent and get the camp stove set up, ready to cook dinner.

Across the fire, however, you notice that Fie is struggling to get her own, much smaller tent set up. You get the sense that she's not really a very good outdoorsman, despite everything.

You pretend not to notice Fie struggling and focus on cooking dinner. With the groceries you bought, you've soon got a good, hearty meal cooking. You doubt there's going to be much in the way of leftovers though, between both your teams and yourselves. Maybe enough for breakfast tomorrow, but that'd be about it.

Fie finally joins you, looking exhausted as you're serving everything up.

"How do you manage such a big tent?" She asks incredulously.

Glancing over, you have to suppress a wince: She's got a small dome tent, so it's upright, but the waterproof outer layer is distinctly crooked, her guide ropes are all over the place and you half expect the tent pegs to get catapulted into the dark at the slightest provocation.

"...Do you want me to fix that up for you?" You ask diplomatically.

"I... That's probably a good idea." Fie concedes with a sigh. "But seriously? How did you get that thing set up so fast in the dark?"

"Lots of practice." You reply as you straighten the cover, and fix the guide ropes and pegs so they're not pending missiles and present tripping hazards.

"Huh. You like camping then?" Fie asks as she releases her team and starts dishing out food. Asides from Cinder and Flareon, you can identify a Skrelp, Magmar and what your pokedex informs you when you give up and bring it out, is a Salazzle.

"I don't like camping, I love it." You say frankly, taking Fie's lead and serving up food for your own pokemon.

You grin as memories come back to you.

"I used to go 'camping' all the time. Worried my parents sick when I was a kid, running off into the bush with little more than the clothes on my back and falling asleep in hollow trees and the like." You recount. "Probably why I'm good with pokemon as well." You add reflectively. "I learned how to interact with them without spooking them. It's actually how I caught Fluffy. Just gained his trust and he decided he wanted to come along."

"Huh. That is impressive." Fie admits. "Although, You should probably be careful there. It'll be a lot harder to butter more powerful pokemon up." She says.

You eat heartily and soon enough, your team and most of Fie's are fast asleep and full by the fire and you're feeling pretty tired yourself. Thinking about it, it has been a long day.

Red.

It's warmth. It's spice, it's pain.

It seems like a lot of your life relates back to the colour red. Padded mats, scrapes and accidnets, your mother's hair, the pokemon centre... it's actually remarkable when you think about it.

And today...

Your mind goes back to the creek and how awkward Fie had looked, croushed in the water like that.

Fie... If you had’ve just taken her attitude and the fact she put you on your back in under three seconds at face value, your day would’ve gone significantly differently. You’d have missed out on catching Volta. More than that, you’d have missed out on a friend.

...It doesn’t hurt that she’s kind of hot either. It’s not just her confidence and attitude. She’s absolutely beautiful. Abs that look like they’re carved from rock, gentle curves, tall and an easy smile.

And, not that you looked or anything, her ass is so perky you’re sure you could bounce coins off it. And her… chest…

You blink and she’s right in front of you again, smiling shyly.

You smile in return as you lay your hand on her shoulder.

"What are you doing?"

You blink awake immediately alert and aware, looking up the length of your arm uncomprehendingly as Fie's poked her head through the flap into your tent.

"Er... n-nothing. Just, um. A dream." You say awkwardly.

"Huh. Alright." She says, retreating outside and resealing the tent flap. "It's six AM. Breakfast is cooking, up and at 'em, or we'll be wasting daylight."

You dress quickly and exit the tent. It's a frezing cold morning, but it's still. Your breath mists in the air and there's a frost. There's not a cloud in the sky and there's every indicator it's going to be an absolutely beautiful day.

Fie's a lot better at cooking than she is at pitching a tent as well, judging by how good breakfast smells.

You eat quickly as your pokemon make the most of the morning sun, before your break camp, make sure the fire is one hundred percent out, then set off down the road again.

You figure you've got another day or two before you reach Route 2 at the rate you were going yesterday. And if you make good time, you might even have time to check out Origin Cave. Everyone in town and nearby insists it's haunted, but that's never stopped adventurous trainers from checking it out.

And you've still got spots on your team to fill out and poke balls to do it with.

After you've been walking for a while, Fie turns to look at you.

"So, what's the plan for today, Alex? This is your rodeo, after all."

Little bit of free-association. The other colours would've lead to other things, but red being the colour of passion, was only going to lead one place.

It doesn't take much coaxing to get the three to start playing tag and soon Fluffy and Volta are running around trying to keep out of Syurm's way as she spits silk at them. what she lacks in actual mobility, you notice she absolutely makes up for with string shot and how accurately she can tag the other two with it, although after about five minutes, you notice it's just a case of tag between Fluffy and Volta as Syurm has crawled into a tree and is happily chewing on leaves.

>>
>>4925100
We already have Umbreon planed as our defensive so nope to Geodude.
Zubat... Could be useful but if we are training a flying pokemon it better be large enough to carry us.

Since it's named origin cave perhaps it has Groudeon in it so possibly fire types. If we come across a Houndour with flashfire we should catch it.
It has a nice immunity and special moveset with fire/poison /dark coverage and nasty plot.

You decide you've got plenty of time, so you decide to talk with Fie a bit.

“Where’d you learn to cook?” You ask. “Breakfast was great.”

“Thanks, though you did most of the work last night.” Fie says. “As to where I learned… on the road mostly.” She admits. “You wouldn’t believe how many times I burned everything before I got the hang of it though.” She adds.

“It’s definitely a skill you’ve got to practice.” You agree, grimacing at how your forays into learning cooking went, then a thought occurs to you. “Hey, how does the Gym run while you’re gone?” You ask.

“It varies. Some Leaders just close up for however long, some people trade off the job with someone else or get their referee to fill in for them.” Fie replies. “I’m in the trade-off camp. The old Gym Leader for Saltcoast City, Emma, she’s not really someone who just retires and gives up a job she spent most of her life at.” She adds. “She was a League member at a few points, so there’s never any question as to whether she’s good enough.”

“Some Leaders just lock the Gym?” You ask, startled.

“Yeah. It’s not that big a deal, so long as they let everyone else know. I think there was… thirteen Gyms at last count?” Fie says. “Can’t remember. Anyway, more than enough for someone to gather eight badges, even if a few people are busy or indisposed.” She adds. “Occasionally though, you’ll get an instance where some idiot, or idiots, go off without telling someone and suddenly, there’s complaints piling up for an absence without notice and we all get audited.” She shakes her head. “Dad is the worst for doing that.”

You grimace. Mum is never happy when the auditors come in to work.

“Sooo… What do you do for fun?” You ask in the silence that follows that as Fie starts to stew.

“Hm?” she shakes herself out of the descending funk. “Me? I guess you could say I’m sporty. I’ve run the triathlon a few times, so training in some capacity is definitely up there… I guess you could count martial arts. One of the few good things I can say Dad ever did for me.” She’s quiet in a thoughtful way for a moment. “I don’t mind a good book, either. I’m kind of a sucker for sci-fi. Even if it’s kind of trashy.” She adds. “What do you do for a hobby?”

Yeah, there's no move limit here. Granted, actually learning them is mostly down to training. Basic moves are going to be easy to learn, advanced ones are going to take a time commitment and Off-Type TMs are going to take the most time, up there with powerful ones.

Eeyup. Moves learned via levelling are easiest, stuff like Hyper Beam and Fire Blast are hardest.

Later on, you could even do something like get multiple 'basic' attacks off for one move with training.

The trade off is the time-investment. And also the fact that other trainers, particularly folk like Gym Leaders and the E4 will use the same tricks.

Since you're going to Origin Cave, you figure it would be a good idea to see what you might find there.

This in mind you start reading the pokedex entry on the place.

Apparently, there's a lot of Zubat and Swoobat, along with Aron, Geodude and deeper in, Onix.

There're also reports of rarer pokemon in the depths: Dragon-types and Psychic types are said to be found in the depths around a shrine that's connected with an old legend related to the legend of the Guardian.
>>
>>4926413
Ok guys, I think we should target an Aron.

What about asking Fie if she's interested in a deep exploration to see the shrine and find team members?
>>
>>4926413
This comes with an asterisk that the depths of the cave is also host to stronger pokemon and either to only venture into the depths in groups or with a strong team of pokemon.

"Watcha lookin' at?" Fie asks curiously.

You show her the entry you're browsing.

"Origin cave, huh?" She says. "If you want to check it out, you're welcome to but I'm not going in there." She adds, shaking her head. "I'm not the biggest fan of small spaces." She smiles wryly. "Kind of jealous of your tent, actually." She confesses.

You have to chuckle, at least a little. It is kind of a stark difference how much bigger your tent is to hers.

Still, Fie noping out of spelunking kind of limits your options and a dragon or psychic type sounds cool, not to mention the potential to find other neat stuff down there.

You decide to just check out the shallow parts of the cave.

But before that, you've got to get there. That in mind, you pick up the pace again.

It's just before lunch when you reach the cave and to your surprise, you find another trainer standing out the front.

He's about your age, maybe a little older, carrying a staff of all things, decorated with golden hoops. He's wearing a long, dark coat and his black hair is done up in braids at the tempels and a long cue down his back.

At his side is a Mienfoo.

He turns to you and his attitude changes from the nerves of someone psyching himself up to serene caution.

The young man brightens noticeably and seems relieved.

"Ah, apologies. My name is Gareth." He says, offering his hand. "I'm bound for the shrine in the depths." He explains. "And I must confess, even with Mien, I'd prefer not to venture down by myself. Not to impose, but you wouldn't mind accompanying me, would you?" He asks cautiously.

"Pass. Not a fan of caves." Fie says, before pausing and rummaging through her bag, producing two cans of repellant and a loop of thin, lightweight rope in a sealed bag. "Here. In case you get in trouble. There ought to be a piton near the entrance to tie the Escape Rope off to and there ought to be enough repel in those to get you back out if you can't handle it." She says. "In the meantime, I'll make lunch." She adds, going off to an old campsite off to one side.

"And how about you, Alex?" Gareth asks.

"All set." You confirm.

You follow Gareth as he takes another deep breath, then enters the cave.

You look around and quickly locate the piton that Fie mentioned and tie the end of the rope off and hook it to your belt, before following Gareth deeper.

no point falling behind. and none of the pokemon mentioned as being present here are cute enough imo. there will be plenty of time to find pokemon to fill out a team and Alex already has three, only a day into his journey. easier to love those things that are gained slowly

You follow Gareth deeper in. It's a slow process. You get through the shallow parts of the cave without issue, but once you reach a half-chewed sign at the bottom of the more easily accessible gallery, your progress slows considerably as the low lights in the space give way to blackness.

You proceed and once you can no longer can see, the dim yellow glow is replaced by a steady blue, focused on Gareth's staff and he starts to lead the way more steadily, his Mienfoo beside him.

"What are you doing here?" You ask as Gareth deftly avoids rocks and obstacles in the dark.

"You'll see. Just... please hold your questions. I need to concentrate." He says with a note of strain as he continues down.

You know what? I know it's a little weird, but Fie mentioned those pokemon are strong, and if this guy can't give us any info and we're going this deep in I think it's reasonable to bail- especially if it keeps ominously popping up as a decision choice
>>
>>4927307
Not ominously, but this is a bit risky. Like going item hunting on the Isle of Armour without a badge to your name in Sword or Shield. Entirely possible and you've got the opportuniy at some decently strong pokemon but you've got to be careful.

You follow along. The cave is deeper than you'd have credited.

After about fifteen minutes, the cave opens out and the reflected glow of Gareth's strange light suffuses the area, caught by still pools of water.

He sighs with relief and leans on the staff for a spell, before turning to you with a wry smile.

"I suppose I ought to explain." He says.

>>

Aron, zubat, and maybe a dragon or psychic type depending on if we get lucky. Aron's evolution line makes for great tanks and can hit surprisingly hard as well. Zubats evolutions are brobats who are fast and toxic.

“That would be appreciated.” You agree.

Gareth nods.

“I’m an Aura Guardian.” He says. “Or at least… I’m training to be.” He adds sheepishly. “Part of that means taking the Guardian’s trial. Which is why I’m here. The shrine here marks the start of that journey.” He says, gesturing to where the bedrock gives way to worked stone and the dim silhouette of a shrine can be made out in the gloom.

“So, why did you want company?” you ask as it begins to dawn on you how very stupid it was to come down here with no lights, barring whatever Gareth had done and no helmets.

“...Firstly, because I’m not overly fond of the dark.” He admits, a muscle working in his jaw. “And second, because it never hurts to have backup when venturing into a cave like this.” He adds.

There’s an awkward pause.

“I suppose I should repay your kindness now.” He says belatedly, before pulling off his pack and rummaging around inside. “Let’s see… It might not cover it, but how about this?” He asks, holding up a nugget of gold, along with a couple of those yellow and black poke balls like Mike had.

You stare for a good, long second.

“...Is this not a fair deal?” Gareth asks, frowning in concern.

“No, no, it’s fair. Too generous even.” You assure quickly. “Just those poke balls would be compensation enough you assure.

His expression clears as he hands you the two balls and puts the nugget away.

“Alright, Mien and I are going to go meditate.” He says. “We won’t be long. Take a look around if you want. Maybe take a moment to reflect. You might learn something about yourself. Or remember something. These caves are special like that.” He adds, then pauses. “If you’re going to try catching any pokemon here though, be careful.” He advises. “You might find more trouble than you bargain for, if you try to fight.”

Considering what the pokedex said, you’re inclined to take him at his word.

“I’ll be careful.” You assure.

He nods and goes to the shrine, kneels formally, Mien mimicking his pose, before they both plant their hands on their hips and bow their heads as though in prayer.

Almost immediately, the blue glow brightens, revealing paths off this chamber.

You decide to bring out Syurm. She's been surprisingly dependable so far.

You're tempted to bring out Volta for light, but that's becoming less and less of a problem as the seconds tick by. An omni-present blue light suffuses everything and even as you watch the cavern grows lighter. You begin to see movement around the margins of the cavern:

Up above, Zubat, Wubat and what you think are Noibat can be seen flitting agitated by the light, but they soon settle.

Closer to hand, you see pokemon the pokedex called Gible peeking fertively from the cave mouths along with Aron and what you're reasonably sure are Bagon and Jangmo-o.

And looming behind them off to the right, is a much larger silhouette. It looks a bit like a stereotypical dragon except... spiky.

Suddenly Gareth's advice about taking a moment to reflect and not fighting seems like very good advice indeed. You get the impression that if you tried to battle one of the pokemon to present, regardless if it itself was a match for you, you'd be fighting the entirety of the assembled.

You also feel queerly... zen. Relaxed. At peace.

You feel like you could do anything just now, if you put your mind to it.

>Try and battle one of the pokemon here.
>Sit and play with Syurm.

You decide to try interacting with the pokemon present, but you're wary of the big one in the right hand passage, so you head towards the left hand side of the cavern. Syurm comes with you and shortly, you're actually hemmed in by curious pokemon.

Even some of the Zubat and Wubat from up on the roof flutter down to get a closer 'look' the clicks of their echolocation barely audible.

You hesitate on what to do for a moment, before you release your team and sit, cross legged in the middle of the crowd of pokemon.

Your team look at you solemnly, before sitting quietly themselves and bowing their heads as the wild pokemon continue to filter into the chamber and the big pokemon comes out of the shadows, revealing a red and blue dragon.

Even as you begin to settle into a relaxed frame of mind, you notice another prowling cautiously past you from the left hand path, along with larger bat pokemon flitting into the chamber. It’s a sizeable space and you could almost be outside with how well-lit it is now.

Then you close your eyes.

Apropos of nothing, or perhaps recalling the fractal dream you had this morning, your mind turns back to red and the influence it’s had on your life.

Now that you’re conscious though, your thoughts don’t immediately deviate towards objectifying Fie though. On reflection, you do have to admit that in the short time you’ve known her, you’ve genuinely grown to like her. Not just for her help and advice either, but for her genuine interest in you and the kindness she’s shown you. Looking back, she’s the first instance of your making a friend without a lot of hesitation on your part.

It makes you feel warm inside, knowing that you’ve made a new friend. And that warmth brings you back to the colour red.

Some people are ruled by their passions.

You are driven by them. Your passion for the outdoors, your passion for learning. And now, a long-buried craving for adventure from your boyhood has awoken in you, bringing with it a wonder and enthusiasm for what the future holds for you, despite the circumstances that set you on this path.

You’ve always loved the outdoors, loved the camps you went on with the Junior Rangers, loved roaming the wilderness around town, even so far as the foothills of the Divide.

You want to reach the sunset and see what lies beyond on this adventure.

The thought of the beautiful, fiery sunsets you’ve seen bring you back to contemplating Red in its many forms.

The sunset… it brings to mind the smell of wood smoke and dinner cooking over hot coals and warm fires on cold nights.

Some of your fondest memories are associated with campfires.

One of the very first things you learned in Junior Rangers was how to light and tend fires. But with that came lessons on to be cautious of it.

How to treat burns, the horrific injuries fire can cause, the destruction it is capable of and the devastation it has caused in the path.

Fire is the root of civilisation and you have many fond memories relating to it, but you respect it for the risks it presents. In many ways, you strive to be like that:

Useful. Warm. Comforting. But also: Dangerous.

A man who is not capable of great violence isn’t peaceful. He is harmless.

You learned that the hard way as a boy when Mike and his sycophants bullied you, for no other reason than you did better than school than them and were younger and smaller.

So, your parents enrolled you for Capoeira. It’s taught you many important lessons, but that line from a lecture your instructor gave, given off-handedly, has always stuck with you. Resonated with you.

And it seems, shaped you.

The warmth fills you and you open your eyes to find yourself with a steady, glowing red light in front of you and a small crowd of quietly watching pokemon, including one of the big dragons, your own pokemon and some of the other cave denizens.

Movement behind them reveals a beaming Gareth.

"Hey, look at that. Is this your first experience with channeling Aura?" He asks. "You're a natural." He adds.

"Aura...?" You ask blankly.

You always thought that was just spiritualist mumbo jumbo.

Gareth nods.

“Yeah. It’s… essentially… the projection and utilisation of the essence of your soul.” He explains. “And that was your first time meditating like that?”

“Um… yes?” You reply, unsure how he’s going to take that.

“That’s amazing.” He says frankly, then shakes his head. “It seems everyone here’s impressed as well.” He adds, gesturing to the crowd of pokemon around you.

“Druddigon here decided he’s coming with me.” He adds, patting one of the spiky dragons on the shoulder. “Seems everyone here is eager to come with you as well.” He adds, gesturing to the pokemon in front of you, then sobers. “The convention is that only one Shrine Guardian can come with you.” He says.

There’s a Jangmo-o, a Wubat and a Gible stood forward of the other pokemon.

You think for a moment. Gible is kind of cute, but Jangmo-o is adorable. And more than that, you do feel a sort of kinship with him.

The red aura light in front of you winks out.

“It looks like you’ve made your choice.” Gareth observes as the Wubat and Gible wander off with the rest of the dispersing pokemon and Jangmo-o knocks you flat with an affectionate tackle.

He’s strong!

“What exactly constitutes a shrine guardian?” You ask as you sit up and dig out one of the yellow and black poke balls Gareth gave you.

Jangmo-o steps back and sits expectantly.

“The pokemon that gathered here while we meditated.” Gareth explained. “They’re attuned to the aura of this cave and by extension the other great caves in the region.” He added. “It’s nothing formal, it’s more like a state of mind. And it’s only at these depths and close to the shrine that it really manifests.” He added. “...Anyway, seems Jangmo-o is waiting. Try offering that Ultra Ball to him.” He suggests. “Then we can head back up and look around closer to the entrance.”

"Maybe some other time." You say. "We'd better get back before Fie gets a rescue crew out here." You add.

Gareth nods and conjures another aura light and starts leading the way back.

"So, these aura powers... how do they work? What can you do with them?" You ask, recalling your team before following him.

"Explaining how they work is kind of pointless. It's a sort of... instinct. Everyone has an aura and they shape it in their day to day lives. Everything we do leaves an imprint. For instance: You spend as much time as you can camping. You've practiced martial arts for most of your life and this journey yu've set out upon has been something you've been yearning for since you were a child." He lists off-handedly.

That's... actually kind of spooky that he could list all of that.

"As for what you can actually do... it varies. Whatever you do, it takes an immense amount of focus, self-knowledge and practice to manifest any noteable ability with aura. Some people use it to enhance their reflexes or as a 'third eye' to 'sense' their surroundings. For others, it is a weapon to be honed through martial arts. Some use it to augment their natural charisma to make themselves more persuasive or bolster their natural aura."

He pauses, collecting his thoughts.

"Rarer skills include healing and being able to peer into the past or the minds of others like a psychic might."

That's a lot to take in. It sounds impressive, but if you know anything about martial arts and related endeavours, it will take time to develop those sorts of skills. Years, even.

"I can teach you what I know, if you like." Gareth offers.

"I'll think about it." You say.

"Fair enough." Gareth says then pauses. "You don't have any objection about travelling together more, do you?" He asks, sounding stilted and awkward. Even more so than his already vaguely off, mechanical diction.

You get the impression he genuinely likes your company.

"I'll have to check with Fie, but I don't see any trouble with that." You say.

Gareth brightens noticeably and basically glows with happiness.

He's a strange one, but he's genuine, that's for sure.

You emerge out into the late afternoon sun to find Fie sitting on a rock and wearing a scowl.

"You might've said you were going into the frigging bowels of the cave." She says. "I've been worried sick! I nearly called for a rescue team twice! What the fuck have you been doing?"

"Ah... sorry." Gareth says sheepishly. "Meditating at the shrine in the depths." He explains.

Fie facepalms.

"And you couldn't have said that was going to take most of the day?" She said in exasperation.

"Ah..." Gareth looks down, shamefaced. "I... guess you don't want me travelling with you."

"Huh?" Fie asks, non-plussed.

"Gareth was wondering if he could come along with us." You explain.

Fie opens her mouth, then closes it. Then thinks for a little bit.

"Yeah, if you're cool with it, I'm cool with it." She says with a shrug. "Besides, if you're that terrible with people, the answer is not less interaction." She says, then shakes her head.

"Are you done looking around in there?" She asks, apparently considering the matter dealt with.

Still 2 spots on the team, we'll need to think what we want.
For me, it'll be a solid flying double typed (Talonflame maybe?) and a good water type

You're tempted to go have a look around the upper reaches of the cave. You're starting to get the backbone of a team here, but you don't want to push your luck. Getting Kay O-o was a stroke of incredible luck and you don't feel like pressing it.

"Yeah. We're done here for now." You confirm.

Fie sighs in relief and hefts her pack again.

"Then lets hit the road then." She says, before leading the way back towards the main track.

"Did you catch any pokemon while you were down there?" Fie asks when you're down the track a short way.

Gareth nods.

"Yeah, I got a Druddigon." He says proudly.

"Nice." Fie agrees, nodding appreciatively. "What about you, Alex?" She asks.

"I got a Jangmo-o." You reply, releasing the little dragon in question.

"Oh, he's adorable!" Fie says, sweeping him up into her arms leaving him very non-plussed, but pleased by the attention. "Have you named him? You have with the rest of your team." She asks.

"His name is Kay O-o." You reply, earning a slightly pained look from Fie.

"Not so sure on that, but your call." She says.

"So, where are you headed?" Gareth asks curiously.

"Saltcoast City." Fie replies.

This actually catches you off guard.

You are going with Fie to Saltcoast city, but you haven't actually made up your mind on what your plan is.

>>
>>4929158
Nope. You haven't really paid attention to the League circuit up until now. You'll have to ask about typing.

Right. Time to train.

You go to the edge of camp where it's clear and release your team, minus Kay O-o. You’ll have to get to know him later, but for now,

How to go about this…

“Okay… Syurm, see that rock over there?” You ask, indicating a middling sized rock a short way distant. “I want you to String Shot it until I say stop. Try hit it as many times as you can.” You add. Syurm blinks up at you, before turning and starting on doing just that.

“Volta…” You stop as you realise something.

You had been planning to try teaching Volta a few moves but you can’t really do anything with Fluffy, unless you do something jointly.

You look at your pokedex and double check something.

“Okay Volta, you and Fluffy are going to learn Bite.” You say, hunting around until you find a good-sized dead branch under a tree.

The pair of them give you blank looks, before trying to chew on the branch, to little success as you try and figure out how to help them learn a move that really ought to come as naturally as breathing to the both of them.

You keep at it for a while, before you set the project aside for the time being, in favour of working on their endurance.

To this end, you tie a rope to the tree and set them both to jump it.

You’re at this until Gareth calls that dinner is ready, by which time you’re sweating yourself and Fluffy and Volta are exhausted, but happy.

Then you glance over and notice a stark, white, blob in the gloom and next to it, Syurm industriously weaving something with the mass of thread she's covered the rock in.

Oops. You never told her to stop.

“Hey, good job Syurm.” You say, coming to retrieve her. “You did a great job.” You assure as you notice she’s done a very good job of constructing a small tent, big enough for herself, Fluffy and Volta to sleep in. “You can keep at this in a bit, but it’s tea time now.” You add, patting her on the head, earning yourself a pleased clicking from her.

You sit down and dig into Gareth’s efforts.

It’s good. A little smoky and light on seasoning but still good.

“So, how’s training going?” Fie asks.

“Not great.” You admit.

“Keep at it.” Fie says. “You’ll get the hang of it.” She added.

“Do you have any advice?” You ask.

“Well for a start, if you’re not just doing general training, it’s better to do one-on-one so you can better direct and correct mistakes.” Fie says. “Though, you had the right idea getting Fluffy and Volta practicing Bite together.” She concedes. “That’s a pretty simple move, so if you keep at it, they should get the hang of it tonight.” She adds. “When we get to Newport, take a day to focus on training. You should get the hang of it.”

You finish eating, then look to your team. Syurm’s already heading back to her construction project. Volta and Fluffy are looking at you curiously while Kay O-o curls up by the fire.

It’s still pretty early. You’ve got time to do some more training, which is exactly what Gareth is doing, heading to the other side of camp to where you were.

You pick yourself up and Fluffy and Volta follow you back to where you were practicing.

“Alright, you’re getting there.” You tell them as you put the stick in front of them. “Try and bite through this.” You say, crouching down to observe as you see Fie watching from a discrete distance.

Syurm is industriously building a tent still.

You watch Fluffy and Volta as they bite the branch over and over, checking against the video demonstration in the pokedex for pointers.

They’re getting the hang of it, but they’re not quite there yet.

Still, by the time you’re finished, the branch is split in a couple of places and covered in teeth marks.

Volta and Fluffy are exhausted and Syurm is huddled proudly in her silken tent. She calls out and Fluffy and Volta amble over and settle down beside her and quickly fall asleep, providing Syurm with an extra buffer from the cold night air, tucked between them as she is.

“Not bad.” Fie says as you stand up, then grins at the sight of the three and the little tent. “Now, c’mon. You owe me for waiting around that cave all day.” She says, taking your hand and marching towards her tent.

You notice that Gareth is still busy training with Druddigon.

Two days isn’t long enough to really get to know someone, but Fie doesn’t play games. She’s up-front about things. You’re only really hesitating for propriety’s sake.

You duck into her tent and find her laying on her front, minus her top. She’s got a small lamp hung from the roof providing light.

Her state of dress isn’t the most shocking part though:

It’s the tracery of wire-thin scars criss-crossing her back.

It looks like someone went to town with a cat-o-nine-tails.

Fie shifts and looks back at you.

“What?” She asks. “I need a back rub.” She says.

“No, he was just an oblivious idiot at work and I was an idiot child.” Fie replies. “A cable snapped and I got my back ripped open by one of the ends because I was playing too close.” She says. “It was a few months before I ran away.”

She waves a hand dismissively.

“Sure, I guess…” You say, applying a decent amount of the cream sat next to her to her back and start working it in.

This… honestly wasn’t something you were expecting. A favour for making her wait, sure, that makes sense.

But this revelation… not so much.

Still, her nonchalant attitude on the subject is somewhat reassuring at least.

It certainly helps you focus on the task at hand.

You work the cream into the scars with a brisk thoroughness. Massage isn’t something you’ve done before or really thought about, but you can definitely feel a few tight knots in her back regardless.

Fie steadily relaxes as you work, giving a sigh of relief as you finish up.

“Ahh, I needed that.” She says as she stretches, then sits up.

You look away and move towards the door.

“Hey.” She says.

You stop, but don’t look back.

“You can look.” She says with clear amusement.

Hesitantly, you turn around to find she’s got her shirt back on.

“Thanks.” She says. “I appreciate it.”

You make your way to your tent.

Gareth waves to you and calls ‘good night’ as you crawl into your tent.

You’re still not really tired yet, so once you’re changed, you decide to study your map so you can plan your trip better.

You start with the Routes:

Route 1: Green and forested, bordered by a creek and pools with a small cave somewhere off to the north of the road. Populated by a wide variety of common wild pokemon.

Route 2: A major artery of the region, there’s always traffic on this route and though relatively clear, is still rough along the edges in order to accommodate the variety of Fire, Fighting, Rock and Ground-types that inhabit this route. Access is provided to Lake Clarity.

Route 3: A fairly steep road, home to a plethora of Grass and Flying-type pokemon.

Route 4: A route along the beach, popular with holidaymakers and home to a great many water types.

Route 5: The eastern spine of Arnet, it grows steadily more arid the closer one gets to Halfway City. Extreme weather is common and Rangers are a common sight, along with Drovers and their herds. Home to numerous Poison, Electric, Rock and Ground-types, with access to Genesis Cave, Mount Aspiration and Lake Credo.

Route 6: The southern spine of Arnet, it is quite possibly the hottest and roughest part of the region, home to many, many fire and fighting types. Reports of Dragon-types are generally dismissed as hallucinations brought on by dehydration in ill-prepared travellers.

(Part 1)
>>
>>4932921

Route 7: The northern spine of Arnet, otherwise known as Victory Road. Many very strong pokemon and equally strong trainers frequent this route.

Route 8: The western spine of Arnet and the longest route in the region. It’s flat for most of its run and after rain, the route explodes in gigantic meadows of flowers for as far as the eye can see. Home to a surprising number of grass-types and water-types for such an arid route.
Access to Lake Audacity to the north and Challenger’s Cave and Mount Defiance to the south.

Route 9: A shifting desert filled with fossil hunters.

Route 10: A green, coastal route bordering the vast central desert.

Route 11: A short route between biomes, on the fringes of the flower fields of Route 8, the scorching deserts Route 6 borders on its western side and the more mild scrubland to the west. Access to Mount Reflection.

Route 12: A refreshingly cool route, often hit by rain. Known to snow during the winter.

Route 13: Known to be the coldest, rainiest place in Arnet. Snows during winter.

Sea Routes and Tracks denoted by dashed lines.
Only the experienced, well prepared or large groups should attempt to take these rough paths. Very strong pokemon are a common hazard, along with myriad natural hazards.

On the first part: didn't really intend for that to happen, it just sort of did.

On the second part: That's completely intentional because that's a can of worms I'm staying far away from. I'm doing a quest. Not looking to try translating a mythology I'm only very tangentially familiar with into a pokemon game.

Although now that the cat's out of the bag, serious question:

Should I lean into it more or just keep things vague and generic?

And now that that's been brought up: add a not-GBR on the east coast or not?
>>
>>4933275
Vague and generic is fine, but I think a GBR would look and be cool
>>
>>4933275
A not great barrier reef would be sick
Maybe it could be a water psychic area. You could say that the psychic pokemon are the reason why the "barrier" part of the name is there.
As for the mythology I'd say probably don't lean too much into it as it can be a very different experience than normal pokemon type stuff

You wake early the next morning and nearly butt heads with Fie as you’re coming out.

“Getting into the swing of things, huh?” She asks as she picks herself up from where she fell back when you nearly clashed heads. “Breakfast is ready. And Gareth is apparently not a morning person.” She says wryly.

You can sympathise with that, even if you’re not like that yourself.

It’s cold again. Still sunny, but it’s overcast and a quick check of the forecast reveals it’s supposed to rain tomorrow.

You suddenly regret not buying a raincoat.

Between that and a helmet and headlamp, you might want to try battling before you reach Newport.

Your pokemon are all huddled around the fire and eyeing the pots hungrily. Kay O-o seems to be getting on with everyone well, which is a relief.

You eat quickly, before packing up your tent again in preparation to move, but Gareth is only just now crawling out of his tent.

Fie seems impatient to get moving, so you guess she’s seen the forecast herself.

“Come on sleepyhead, we’re burning daylight.” She says, handing him some food.

“‘M up.” He mumbles tiredly, accepting a cup of coffee as he slowly wakes up while he eats.

It seems like you’ve got some time before you leave.

Over the following half an hour, you make more progress than you thought you would.

Neither of them actually manages to bite through the stick, but comparing to the video reference, their technique is spot-on. They just need to work on putting more power behind it.

When Fie calls out to you, you’re confident that both Fluffy and Volta are getting the hang of it.

“Great job.” You say, scritching their ears to both their enjoyment.

When they settle back down, you recall everyone and join Fie and a still-tired looking Gareth as you set out again.

“Whoa! Is this a Max Revive?!” The kid asks sharply as he stares at the crystal.

“Yeah, I’ve got a few.” Fie says. “On the house.” She adds, delicately coaxing Zubat into taking the crystal.

It takes it and starts sucking away happily, already looking better.

“Hm? Oh, it’s Danny.” He replies cheerfully. “What’s yours?”

“Alex.” You reply.

“Pleased to meet you.” He says politely as Fluffy bounds up at you.

You catch him on reflex as you pet him.

“How long have you been a trainer?” He asks curiously.

You get the impression that he’s mistaken you for having a lot more experience as a trainer than you actually have.

“About two days, wouldn’t it be, dear?” You ask Fie casually, grinning as she gapes in shock and embarrassment at you.

“So, the Newport Gym is a Bug gym?” You ask.

“Uh-huh.” Danny confirms with a nod.

“What’s the gym like?” You ask, hoping there’s something particular about it.

“You mean you’ve never seen it?” Danny asks. “Even in pictures? It’s a huge hot house. And it’s full of Bug-types.”

That sounds pretty interesting.

“Ethan studies ‘em. He gave me a bunch of poke balls and asked me to catch some before he agreed to battle me.” He continues. “Even let me keep one.” He added.

That sounds like a lot of work.

“How’d the battle go?” You ask.

“Started out alright. He opened with a Weedle, then he sent out Scyther and things went downhill from there.” Danny said. “It just… hit us, then ducked into the grass on the field.

Oh, that sounds like a pain in the arse to deal with.

Not impossible, but you’d either need to do a lot of training and get stronger or get a Fire-type to deal with the brush.

“Huh. Thanks.” You say as you think on how to deal with those sorts of tactics.

“No problem. We should battle again if we meet up.” Danny says cheerfully. “See ya.”

With a wave, he’s gone.

Suddenly, there’s a surge of pain in your arm and it goes dead.

You press on for a while and it’s getting towards mid afternoon before you stop for lunch.

As luck would have it, you find a good spot and even better, there’s a small group there with their pokemon enjoying lunch.

A young man in some high-end looking hiking gear waves to you.

“Hello, would you be trainers?” He asks.

He sounds kind of posh. And judging by how new and practically immaculate his gear looks, you get the impression that he’s got money to play with.

And judging by the piss-poor firepit one of his buddies has made and the abundance of fuel crossing it, this group looks like a group of city slickers with all the gear and no idea.

>Rush over and fix the firepit before that idiot starts a fucking bushfire.

“Whoa, hey, no, no, no, no!” You say as you sprint over before the kid tending the fire can strike another match and take the box. “Are you crazy? you’ll set the whole area on fire.” You admonish.

“What? No we won’t, we’ve got a firepit.” The boy who’d been lighting the fire replied, gesturing to the ring of rocks on top of the leaf litter.

“No, you will, because you haven’t cleared the leaf litter out.” You reply, indicating the bountiful fuel underneath the rocks. “Here…” You grab one of the rocks and use it to dig a trench around the circle of rocks, before placing it on the outer edge and filling the circle out on the outer edge of the firebreak, gathering more rocks to make up the difference. “You’ve got to be extra-careful doing this out here.” You say as the boy looks at you sideways.

“Thanks.” The boy who waved you over says. “None of us thought of that.” He admits sheepishly as you rearrange the kindling a little and get the fire lit. “You a trainer?” He asks, curiously. “How many badges do you have?”

“Yeah, I’m a trainer.” You confirm. “Haven’t even challenged a gym yet, but I’ve been camping since I was about six.” You add.

“Oh.” The apparent leader of the group says. “I’ve got two.” He says, sounding disappointed. “What about you, Tom, how about you and this fellow get a battle in before lunch?” He asks, genially.

He sounds so posh, it’s almost stereotypical.

“That sounds like a plan to me.” Tom said.

Looking around, the two boys and two girls in the group all look like they’re made of money with their snazzy gear.

“Two on two, half what you’ve got?” Tom asks as you get the fire lit.

All four of them do a double-take as they recognise her.

“Sure.” The one who waved you over says. “Could I get your autograph after?” He asks hopefully.

“Deal.” Fie says, giving him a thumbs up.

Marill waves its tail cutely.

“Thundershock.” You order.

Volta’s fur crackles as she braces, before there’s a minor crack and flash as a bolt of electricity arcs between the two pokemon.

Marill sways, then collapses forwards twitching from the residual shock. You're as startled as Tom is. You weren't expecting that to be quite that effective.

“Return.” Tom says, looking rather taken aback. “Litleo, go.” He says, sending out a little red and brown pokemon that shares a vague similarity to Volta.

Volta meanwhile, bounds forward and sinks her teeth into Litleo’s shoulder in a textbook Bite.

You fist pump.

She’s got it down. You weren’t sure whether she was going to land that.

Litleo still looks like it’s got a lot of fight left though. You get the impression that Tom’s got a little bit more experience than you do. Favourable typing and a lucky hit from Volta made that a non-issue with Marill but you’re not quite as fortunate with Litleo.

That being said, Volta’s looking confident as the two begin to circle. Her guard is still a little low after Marill's Tail Whip though. And Litleo still looks cranky.

Volta is knocked back, but darts in and chomps down on Litleo’s back. She’s clearly been hurt by the Headbutt, but if anything, that’s made her fight harder, judging by how Litleo sags as she whips her head back and forth.

Litleo’s still up, but only just and Volta’s looking worse for wear as well.

In a manner of speaking.

You have to earn the respect of your pokemon.

This is harder for higher level pokemon.

However, if you have stronger pokemon, then that's an indicator to wild ones you're worth respecting.

Some are more work than others however. Legendaries, Dragon-types and stuff like Gyarados have egos to match their reputations.

“Now use Headbutt!” Tom orders with clear excitement.

“Fluffy, Tackle!” You order.

You’re pretty sure you’ve got this, but if Litleo gets a hard hit in, things are going to get really, really tense.

The two charge each other head-on. There’s none of the circling and posturing that had been in evidence between Volta and Litleo.

You wince as Litleo and Fluffy collide.

As you’d feared, Litleo hit Fluffy hard, but in the beat that follows, Litleo sways and collapses.

You decide to leave Fluffy, Volta and Syurm to laze in the sun and digest lunch.

Kay O-o is sunning himself as well, but in a more cognisant way, rather than from a food coma.

“I’m curious about just what you can do.” You admit.

“You mean with aura?” Gareth asks.

“Yeah.”

“I’ve got a good sense for people and pokemon. An intuition, you might call it.” Gareth explains. “You’ve probably noticed it yourself now. You’ve gotten a sense for how people have been thinking during those battles and how strong their pokemon are.” He guesses.

Now he mentions it, you have. And his description of the feeling as intuition is a pretty apt way to put it.

“Now that you mention it, yeah. Just now battling Tom.” You admit.

Gareth nods.

“That’s the most basic form of aura use.” He says. “Everything else, from enhancing reflexes to Aura Spheres, stems from that ability to read people. It’s nothing as overt as what a psychic is capable of and it takes a lot of discipline and training to use aura, but you strike me as having that sort of discipline.” He observes.

You notice that he seems a lot more comfortable and a lot less artificial talking about this stuff than he came off back in the cave.

“What is it with you and Fie?” He asks in frank confusion.

Wait, what?

“I thought you were just travelling together.” He admits. “But when you battled that boy, she lost all composure when he said you were ‘with her.’” He says.

There’s that awkward, artificial intonation and awkwardness back again as he speaks.

“So, is there something between you two, or am I reading too much into this?”

“He elected to come with you because he feels like you can both grow together. The same’s true with me and Foo.” Gareth explains. “And by ‘grow’ I mean in the sense of your abilities with aura. Though, naturally growing stronger in the more conventional sense is a part of that as well.” He adds.

You look to Kay O-o, who just returns the look solemnly.

“Makes sense.” You admit. “Why’re you going to all these shrines anyway?” You ask.

“So I can become an Aura Guardian.” Gareth says simply. “It’s a final rite, of sorts.”

“I thought Aura Guardians died out as an institution.” You admit, arching an eyebrow at that.

“No, just lost prominence. There’s a few left though. Normally in places most people tend to avoid.” Gareth says. “I got taken in by one when I was just a baby. They raised me, taught me everything I know and set me down this path.” He adds with a shrug.

He grimaces.

“There sure seems to be a lot of work for a Guardian around though. There’s a lot of pokemon that are very upset these days.” He adds. “Not so much down here, but definitely around the coast and further out in the desert.”

That sounds ominous.

Gareth opens his eyes, then stands, helping you to your feet.

“We should probably get moving.” He notes.

Nope, though that may wind up on the cards.

Normally, I disdain putting realpolitik in stuff like this, but the situation surrounding the Reef's degradation, the fuck-ups, rorting and political and corporate disdain involved is absurd enough I could probably make something out of it in a pinch. Not to mention some of the personalities.

“You’re right. We’ve got a long way to go and if it’s going to rain tomorrow, we’re going to lose a day.” You agree after a moment’s thought.

You pack up and recall your team as Richard and his group smother the fire and get ready to move as well.

You say your goodbyes and set out down the road.

“How much did you get?” Fie asks curiously after you’ve been walking for a while.

“Let’s see…” You say, fishing out your trainer card, before doing a double take.

That’s… that’s a lot of money.

“Not bad.” Fie says, nodding. “We’ll have to do some shopping when we hit Newport. Get you a new outfit.” She suggests.

“Among other things.” You agree, thinking back to hiking through the depths of Origin Cave.

“I guess.” You say, unconvinced.

“Say, mind telling me why you were so long down in that cave yesterday? You didn’t get lost, did you?” Fie asks.

“Er… no.” You reply. “I was meditating with Gareth.” You confess.

“Oh, so he’s actually serious with the whole Aura Guardian look?” Fie asks, startled.

“Yeah.” You confirm. “He is. And… apparently I can do it to.” You add cautiously.

“...Huh.” She says intelligently. “I’ve never heard of anyone actually being able to do anything with Aura without years of practice and more often than not, some sort of catalyst, like a rare crystal.” She adds. “You should keep at it. It’s supposed to be a really rewarding ability to have, especially for a martial artist.” She says.

“I’ll keep that in mind.” You assure.

"Okay, that looks an awful lot like rain." You say after studying the oncoming clouds for a minute. "Did either of you see any decent camping spots on your way here?"

"I'm afraid not." Gareth says. "I came from the north."

"Same." Fie replies. "We're not far from Route 2, but I didn't see any roadhouses or anything we can make realistically from here." She adds.

"Right, well, keep an eye out for anywhere sheltered we can make camp for the night." You say. "It's going to bucket down overnight and probably tomorrow as well." You predict.

"Got it." Gareth says with a judicious nod.

You hurry on, keeping an eye out for a good place to camp.

You reach Route 2 and head south, past a sign helpfully informing you that the nearest roadhouse is about six hours hike down the road, making it effectively useless to you, since it’d be the middle of the night by the time you reached it and you’d probably collapse from hypothermia before you actually got there.

The sun is going down and making the clouds to the west, which are now awfully close, glow in spectacular shades of red, yellow and orange, when Fie points out a clear area on a slight rise, sheltered by some large rocks about a hundred metres off the road.

It’s as close to perfect as you can envisage: You won’t get flooded out, the rocks will give you shelter from the wind and if you’re smart about how you position your tents and set them up, you should be able to make a nice, comfortable campsite until the rain passes, whether that’s tomorrow morning or the day after.

There’s an awful lot of very long grass between you and the site though.

You don’t see what happens next, but there’s a zap, a squawk, then Gareth and Fie are helping you up as Volta and the bird pokemon, face off, Volta shivering and sparking with more electricity as the bird eyes her with a lot more caution than it did you, feathers puffed and sparking with residual electricity.

You don’t know if it’s stubbornness or whether this pokemon is that strong, but it’s still up, despite the residual electricity arcing from its feathers and how it’s swaying.

“Oh, shit.” Fie says. “Are you alright, Alex? That Rufflet’s done a number on you.” She notes.

You get the sense she’s staring at your arm.

Volta complies as the Rufflet shudders from the residual shock of the last jolt. The Rufflet finally slumps over before squawking loudly and awkwardly fluttering away.

“Good job, Volta.” You manage, recalling her as you stagger on out of the grass onto the rise.

There’s a decent amount of space on the top, with several large gaps in the rocks you can just about fit your tents in but you’re going to have to figure out some sort of tarp to keep the rain out of the space.

“Does anyone have a tarp or something?” You ask as Gareth moves to get a fire going and Fie sits you down and starts cleaning the scratches on your arm.

“No, I don’t.” Gareth replies distractedly.

“‘Fraid not.” Fie admits as she digs out some cotton balls, rubbing alcohol and dressings.

She looks up at you curiously.

“Can you weave a canopy over these rocks?” You ask.

She nods and starts crawling for the nearest one.

“She’s going to need some sort of frame, otherwise, that canopy is just going to blow away.” Fie notes as she dabs liquid fire into the cuts on your arm.

“Good point…” You manage through clenched teeth.

It’s an effort not to clench up.

“She can use the frame off my tent.” Fie offers. “Hey Gareth!” She calls.

“Yes?” Gareth asks, looking up from the fire as Syurm moves around overhead, laying the foundation for the canopy.

“Can you get the poles out of my tent? Syurm’s going to need a frame to build this canopy over, or it’s just going to blow away.” Fie explains.

Gareth gives her an odd look, but nods and leaves the freshly-lit fire to do as Fie asks as she keeps at your arm.

Absently, she releases her Blaziken.

“Cinder, cut the grass back from around camp. And keep any Flying types from bothering Syurm.” She adds.

Oh. That hadn’t occurred to you. And it really should’ve considering what that Rufflet has done to your arm.

Looking down, it really is a mess.

There’s at least two lacerations and a whole bunch of deep cuts and scratches criss-crossing your arm. There’s plenty of blood, but not enough for any of the injuries to be particularly bad.

“Arceus, you’ve got a good pain-tolerance.” Fie notes as she finishes cleaning the scratches, then retrieves a spool of fine thread and an equally fine needle. “This is going to sting like a bitch though.” She warns as she threads the needle. She hesitates, then apparently decides to say what’s on her mind “I’ve got a bottle of gin in my bag.” She says, then smiles weakly. “Fancy a drink?”

You pause and think that over.

“Why do you have a bottle of gin?” You ask. You’re feeling a weensy bit light-headed. That would be the shock.

“Early birthday present from my brother.” She explains. “Hey Gareth! Bring me the bottle in my bag!” She calls as he hands the frame from Fie’s tent to Cinder.

He nods and comes over, handing her the bottle and a tin cup from her mess kit.

“Thank you.” She says cracking the lid and pouring a measure into the cup, before handing it to you. “Slowly.” She says seriously.

You do as she says as you watch Syurm work.

She’s making swift work of a basic dome. Cinder is also helping, gathering the grass she’s cut and threading it into the silk, further strengthening it.

Your head’s starting to swim already. You’ve never drunk before. This gin isn’t bad though. Very fruity, not too sweet. No wonder this stuff’s so popular.

You feel a tugging sensation as you notice Gareth is studying Syurm’s handiwork.

“What is it?” You ask.

“I’m just thinking, we’re going to want a way to keep the wind from howling around in here and blowing the canopy off. And keeping the rain from blowing in from the west.” Gareth explains.

That’s a good point. The wind does tend to blow mostly from the west this time of year. Which is where you’ve come from.
