You are Blair d’Rusalka, student at the Garreg Mach Officer’s Academy and a member of the Black Eagles House. You were sent to the Academy by your Guardian, Count Rusalka, to undergo training and become a Knight in his service. You’ve settled into life at the Academy, making new friends, new rivals and taking part in various missions on behalf of the Church of Seiros. Your most recent mission found you defending a Priestess from soldiers of an opposing religious sect, with an unknown ulterior motive.

You’ve recently returned to the Academy just in time for the fifth month of the year to begin. Your eyes firmly set on soon becoming a Pegasus Knight and achieving the rank of Junior Cadet for your student house.

After four days of walking through the forest at a slower place thanks to your injured clerics, you finally arrive back at the gates of Garreg Mach. The first thing you notice upon your return is the heightened security. The Monastery was already on alert due to the influx of outsiders here for the Rite of Rebirth festival, but now the defenses seem to have been raised up a notch even from that. Archers train their bows on your group from the monastery’s towers, and a line of Armored Knights seek to block your path before you get any closer. Leopold bids your group to stop, and eventually, a lone soldier runs from the defensive line to where you are standing.

“Greetings Sir Leopold!” The soldier says. He sounds uncharacteristically jovial given the situation. “I’m glad to see you return safely! You were due back from Tauros Village days ago. When you and the students did not return on schedule, we grew worried.”

“Our trip did not go quite as planned.” Leopold says. “I will need to make a full report to Seneschal Seteth as soon as possible”

The gatekeeper grimaces. “That may be difficult. The Seneschal has been preoccupied as of late. While you were gone, the monastery was attacked. Assassins hailing from the Western Orthodox Church infiltrated the Holy Mausoleum. Fortunately, Professor Byleth and her students fought them off, but we’ve been on high-alert ever since.”

“What?!” Exclaims Leopold. He spares a glance towards your direction, muttering. “It seems our conclusion was accurate.”

“Is everything alright, Sir?” Asks the gatekeeper.

“All is fine, we also had an encounter with the Western Church’s soldiers. The Priestess and one of my students sustained injuries during the resulting bout. Please see to it that they are given medical attention.”

“Of course! Leave it to me!” The gatekeeper gives a signal, and the gates of Garreg Mach open to you. A few knights and clerics come your way to ensure that Elizabeth and Mercedes are taken care of.

“I’ll be heading forward to give me report to the Seneschal.” Says Leopold. “Excellent work out there, all of you. I dare say some of you spoiled brats may even become proper Knights one day.” He glances in your direction. “My offer still stands, Blair. Farewell.” With that, the knight departs.

Elizabeth, who is being carried away in a cart, bids the knights to wait for one moment so that she may address you.

“Blair, I never thanked you for saving my life earlier. When that slab of stone had pinned me, I was sure that would be the end of things.” The Priestess looks exhausted, both physically and mentally, but she somehow manages to put on a smile. “I don’t have a home to go back to, so I imagine I’ll be here at the monastery for a while. If you ever need anything, please do not hesitate to call on me.” With that, the woman is carted off.

>You Gain a C-Support with Elizabeth!

“I’m sorry we didn’t get to see the festival this year, Blair.” Says Mercedes. “Next year though, I promise that Annette and I will treat you to a great time!”

“That’s right!” Annette affirms.

>You smile and nod. “I’ll hold the both of you up to that!”

As Mercedes is carted off, with Annette at her side, Raphael and Ignatz step into view.

“Finally, back at the monastery. Time to pig out, I’ve been eating rations for days! Let’s go Ignatz!” The blonde boy turns to you before departing.

“You’re pretty tough for a short-stack, Blair! I’ve been wanting a rematch ever since the mock battle. If you’re up for it, you know where to find me!”

>”I’d like that Raphael. I’ll give it my all!”

As both boys depart, you ready yourself to enter the gates when you feel a firm hand slap directly against your left buttock. Yelping, you turn around with a hand on your spear to find Corrine standing there.

“What? I saw Muscles over there do the same thing to Four-Eyes after the battle. I wanted to try it out.”

>You sigh. “Do you truly find mocking me at every juncture to be so entertaining?”

Corrine shrugs. “It does break up the dullness in-between battles rather nicely.”

>You let your guard down. “You know, were it not for your penchant for bloodshed, you’d make very capable ally. I wouldn’t have survived had you not backed me up.”

Corrine scoffs. “You’re one to talk. Where’d you learn to impale a man and lift him up like that? That was positively frightening. With moves like that, you’d make for a scary villainous knight in some hogwash children’s tale.”

>You cover your eyes, exhausted. “There you go again with the mocking…”

Corrine laughs. “This was fun. Don’t be a stranger, Blair.” The girl walks off, with a pep in her step.

>You gain a C-Support with Corrine!

You’re the last person to enter through the gates. From what you heard from the gatekeeper; things seemed to have taken a turn for the worse since your departure. You sigh and walk through, thinking about what skills you’ll focus on this month to distract from the ongoing events.

>Chapter 5: White Clouds, Verdant Rain Moon, Tower of Black Winds

While you decide to continue focusing on your Lance and Tactics skills, this month you think it may be worth it to brush up extra on your abilities with Magic. Despite the Black Eagles having some of the best access to magical talent, you haven’t really kept up with your studies in the subject. You figure some refresher courses couldn’t hurt.

As you enter through the gates and make your way to the courtyard, you notice a large commotion within. Students, clergy, and knights are gathered in a circle, surrounding some sort of raised platform. As you move forward to get a closer look, you overhear some of the onlookers talking.

“I can’t believe those bastards had the audacity to try and kill the Archbishop!”

“I’ve never seen a public execution before.”

“I heard when your head gets cut off, your body remains conscious for a few minutes longer.”

“Gross, shut up! That’s just a myth!”

There’s to be an execution? Judging by what you’ve overheard, these must be the men that the gatekeeper had mentioned tried to infiltrate the Holy Mausoleum.

“Blair!”

You turn at the sound of your name to see Dorothea running towards you. The girl embraces you in a hug, squeezing you tight.

“You’re okay! We were worried sick when you and the others didn’t return on time.”

>You do your best to answer her as you’re being smothered. “We were attacked once we reached the village. The ones who attacked us appeared to be in league with these men.”

“The Western Church?” Asks Dorothea, with some surprise. “Figures. The Professor and a few of us fought them off when they infiltrated the Mausoleum.”

You want to ask her more about what occurred when the crowd falls silent. You’d only seen the Archbishop Rhea from afar, but she cuts an imposing figure as she steps onto the platform. Your first thought is how beautiful she looks. While her true age is unknown, you imagined her to be much older judging by how long she’s served as the Church’s matriarch. Every step she takes is full of grace, and the white dress that she’s outfitted in looks far more lavish than anything you’d seen even the most affluent noblewomen wear. All this contrasts sharply with the dark look on her face.

“Men of the Western Orthodox Church!” She shouts. “You stand guilty of committing the gravest of blasphemies! Defiling the Holy Tomb of our Goddess Seiros is a crime so foul, so vile, that only death can serve as a fitting punishment for your sins!” From her side, Rhea draws a slim, shining sword. You’ve heard stories of the Sword of Seiros, the Archbishop’s personal Relic Weapon, but the blade is far more beautiful than the stories tell.

Holding the blade with both hands, Rhea lifts the sword up high. You manage to avert your gaze at the last second before you hear the cut, and the crowd cheers. As you look away, you feel Dorothea squeeze your hand.

“This is kinda heavy for having just come back home, no?” You hear Dorothea whisper into your ear. “Let’s get out of here.”

>You nod. “Yeah, let’s go back to the dorm. I’m pretty beat.”

You both step out of the crowd and head back to your room. You suddenly feel exhausted.

>You gain a B-Support with Dorothea!”

You get back into the full swing of classes later that week. After class is over one day, you’re stopped by Professor Byleth, who asks you to come to her office.

“I’m impressed, Blair. You’ve really taken your Authority lessons to heart, and I received word that you performed admirably during your mission to Tauros Village. We have an opening, and as promised, I’d like to formally offer you the position of Junior Officer of the Black Eagles House.”

>You nod excitedly. “Thank you, Professor! I’d be happy to accept.”

“This isn’t just a title change, Blair. This is a serious duty. You’ll be responsible for the safety of your fellow students that you lead into battle. They’ll look towards you for instruction and guidance. You’ve been in the heat of battle enough times that I’m confident you know how to protect yourself, but I need to know that you can do the same for your colleagues. Tell me, Blair, are you up to it?”

You think back to Leopold, and how he was able to immediately take charge of the battlefield and ensure everyone’s safety. Are you capable of such a thing?

You made up your mind months ago. This is the path you’ve decided to embark on, and you won’t let this opportunity slip you by.

>You nod and raise your fist. “Yes Professor, I believe I am more than capable. I promise not to let you or the Black Eagles under my command down.”

Professor Byleth studies you for a moment longer, before flashing you a thumbs up and smiling. “Very well then, congratulations on the achievement, Blair. At the end of this week, you’ll report to me after classes, where you and the other officers will be briefed on the upcoming mission this month. That will be all for now.”

You bow and make your way out of the Professor’s office, a new pep in your step, excited to tell Dorothea the news that you’ll be joining her as a junior officer.

As your week continues, you focus on practicing more with your spear. You’ve come a long way with it since the days of “stick them with the pointy end.” Particularly, you feel comfortable boxing out sword users. If you ever get the chance to duel Petra again, you’re confident you’ll be able to take her down.

>You Gain the skill “Swordbreaker!” (+20 Hit and Avoid when facing Sword users).

At the end of the week, you report alongside the rest of your junior officers to Professor Byleth, who has already received word on a new mission that you’ll be undertaking this month. As you look around, you spot the familiar faces of Petra and Caspar, who wave you over to join them. Once everyone is present, the Professor begins the meeting.

“Cadets, this month’s mission will involve venturing into the Kingdom’s territory to put down a group of bandits that have been plaguing the region.”

“We’re back to fighting bandits?” Asks Caspar, disappointed. “I was hoping we’d be giving those Western Church bastards a pounding after what they pulled.”

“This isn’t just an ordinary group of marauders, Caspar. Their leader is Miklan Gautier, a former noble who has stolen his family’s Relic Weapon, the Lance of Ruin.”

Murmurs break out in the assembly hall upon hearing the news that the enemy was a noble carrying one of the fabled Heroes' Relics. You recall Catherine and her Thunderbrand and the devastation she was able to work on the battlefield. You certainly don’t want to be on the receiving end of that.

“Fear not, according to our intel, this Miklan lacks the Crest required to make full use of the Relic. In his hands, it should be nothing more than a well-crafted lance. The true danger lies in his tactical prowess. Miklan is a gifted leader, who’s been able to put a sizeable group together. In addition, he’s taken command of Conand Tower, turning it into his personal headquarters.”

“Conand Tower is a fortress of some repute.” Adds Hubert. “According to maps made available to us, there isn’t much room to maneuver once inside. Additionally, to make your way to the center, where this Miklan will most likely be, requires going through a winding path. Perfect for archers to let loose a volley of arrows against invaders.”

“Due to the tight nature of the corridors we’ll have to traverse, we’ll be going forward in loose formations, and with less students than usual.” Says the Professor. “Leading the pack will be units led by Edelgard, Ferdinand and Caspar. Behind them, we’ll have Linhardt, Dorothea and Hubert running magical support, while Bernadetta and Petra will lead units covering us from range. Blair, you’re in charge of defending our backline. Conand Tower is a sprawling structure, with many corners and hallways that could give way to an ambush. You and your unit will ensure our backline doesn’t crumble to any surprises.”

>So, it’s backline coverage for you. Very well, not the most exciting thing in the world, but you’re determined to make a good first showing. “Understood, Professor.”

“Good, we’ll go through unit compositions at our next meeting. You’re dismissed.”

You leave the assembly hall. It’s the weekend, which means you have your first day of free time ahead of you.

Also he's the best to give us the downlow on the Gautier situation given he's friends with the house's heir - he might be able to possibly get us in contact with Sylvain.

blair still has no hobbiiiiiiiiiies it's so sad ;-;
hm. well let's compare. characters in the game usually can be summed up in two or three hobbies and a few character traits. sylvain, for example, is a womanizer/dislikes women, dislikes crests, and then he additionally doesn't try hard despite intelligence. for hobbies he also enjoys art, fashion and games. maybe you could say that being sociable is also a hobby of his, though it's less explicit. and marianne feels she brings bad luck and avoids people, is devout, and is quiet. her hobbies are animals and praying. I think most other characters are similar.
blair tries hard to be an ethical knight, but is also practical. and there's some amount of bloodlust to her which disquiets her.
but she has no hobbies outside training! there's enough space in there for one, surely. she does spend a lot of time talking to people but I feel like that's more an artifact of the structure of the quest than her being actively sociable like sylvain.
does she like animals and pegasi? it has been one of her primary goals while at the academy to become a pegasus knight. but in the scenes with her interacting with a pegasus I wouldn't say she had a special affinity, either, and there's been no mention of her taking extra time of her own to spend with them the way that marianne gets in the game.
what would be her favorite gifts? owl feather of course, and probably the training dagger or whetstone, but what else? what are her favorite foods and flowers? characters who like training usually like the meat foods. does she even like flowers, or is she like ingrid in actively spurning the accoutrements of femininity?
I think part of why Blair doesn't do anything except go talk to people and train is b/c it's not clear what benefit the fishing grounds/chapel/mess hall would provide for her other than random conversations, since she's not hanging out there to raise students' motivation like byleth would. are we meant to try these things out to find out if they do anything special, Tree, or would you mind telling us?

You recall Leopold’s words. An opportunity to train with an elite member of the Knights of Seiros is something that doesn’t happen every day. You decide to head to the Knight’s Grounds and seek the man out to take him up on his offer.

Upon entering the Grounds, you find Leopold barking orders to a group of junior knights. As you approach him, he spots you and bids you to come over.

“So, you decided to come after all?” The knight smirks, turning his attention away from the trainees to you. “I take it you came to learn something actually useful for a change?”

>You do your best to ignore the knight’s brash nature. “You mentioned that you would personally train me. How could I resist an invitation from the Great Sir Leopold?”

Leopold raises an eyebrow. “Is that a hint of sarcasm I detect? Pray tell what has you in such an uncharacteristic mood today.”

>“If you must know, I was recently promoted to the rank of Junior Officer.”

“Is that so? Well congratulations, and it only took you almost half of the school year!”

>You refuse to take the bait. “If only I’d had such a caring and guiding mentor such as yourself from the beginning, perhaps I’d have achieved the rank sooner.”

Leopold scowls, before turning to the trainee knights. “You’re dismissed for the day. Leave.” He turns back to you. “Grab a spear and get in the ring.”

You pick out a spear from the rack as the trainee knights pass you by, some openly gawking as they do so. When you settle on a spear, you get in the training ring only to find Leopold already standing there, his own spear in hand.

“So, you’re to lead men in battle?” He asks. “To do so, one must remain in full control of their emotions at all times. Losing your sense of self will only lead to making rash decision making, and rash decisions lead to lives lost. I’m aware that you’re prone to losing your temper when confronted with danger. Such a trait is fine if you’re some freak Almyran Berserker, but I don’t see the makings of one in front of me.”

Before you know it, Leopold charges you. The man is a Paladin with years of experience. There is nothing you can do to stop his gauntleted fist from connecting firmly with your stomach, sending you to your knees to reel in pain. You clutch your abdomen and can feel tears welling in your eyes as you struggle to breathe. (-9 HP).

“Throughout the course of our training, I intend to beat this trait out of you. I look forward to seeing how you develop. Now, pick up your spear. We’ll be going through drills.”

You struggle to your knees, trembling as you can barely hold on to your spear. A burning desire to snap this man in half is welling inside you.

“I don’t have all day, Blair.”

You rush to attack Leopold with a barrage of spear jabs, but the man blocks each thrust with seemingly little effort.

“Concentrate! You’re clouded by your rage! You’ll never hit me that way!”

This continues for another two hours, and unfortunately, you’re unable to strike a hit on the veteran knight.

“Enough, we’ll call it there for today.”

>You’re on your knees, drenched in sweat and panting. “N-not done yet…”

“Your heart is liable to give out if we go any further. Your battle rage is a fitting trait for one who throws themselves into the fray with little thought, but it ill suits a leader. I don’t know what caused you to develop such a habit, but throughout the course of our training, I intend to root it out of you. You’re dismissed.”

Leopold is already gone by the time you’re able to collect yourself off the floor. The man’s words echo in your head. He may have a point. You’re not thrilled by your performance today, but at the very least, you feel like you’ve gained some good experience, and started on the path to making a serious development.

Relaxing, yet a great activity for reflecting a la toilet thoughts. Also yeesh that's a harsh level up, and coming off from his intention to beat Blair's really good personal out of her? Leopold's not making a good first impression as a tutor smdh looking forward to see where it takes us

You decide a trip to the Sauna would be perfect! After working out your muscles with Leopold, you figure it’s just the sort of soothing therapy that you’re in need of. Besides, it’s rare that you get some time to just sit back and relax. You spend so much time training and marching into battle that a good cleansing is just what you need.

You arrive to your destination, changing into the smallclothes provided by the spa, and enter the sauna. You find that you have the whole place to yourself for the time being (perfect, as you’re feeling a tad shy about the current outfit), and you pour out some water onto the embers.

Sitting back, you feel utterly relaxed, perhaps the most you’ve felt since coming to the monastery. The steam is already working its course in soothing your aching muscles, and you feel as though you’re on a cloud. You think back to all that you’ve done so far since coming to Garreg Mach. You’ve been running around left and right, getting into duels and battles and risking life and limb for others. No one said the path to knighthood would be easy, but you feel as though you’ve been neglecting your own health. You make a mental pledge to yourself that starting today, you’ll try and focus a little more on enjoying some personal free time.

As you close your eyes and drift, brainstorming some potential fun activities to get into, the door opens and a familiar looking boy walks in. You recognize him from the Mock Battle, a Blue Lion. Sylvester?

“Well, if it isn’t the lovely Blair? This sauna session just got way more exciting!”

>“Sylvain.” You recall now. This boy surrendered after you had defeated Felix. It seems like an eternity ago. You’ve never really interacted with him beyond that first encounter, but from what you recall, he has quite the reputation as a –

“Mind if I join in?” The orange haired youth takes a seat on the bench, sliding next to you. Perhaps a little closer than you’d probably like, given that he’s currently decked in only a pair of shorts, and you’re not wearing much more yourself.

>“Go right ahead, it’s a public service.” You slide slightly away to the right.

“Hahaha that it is.” The boy laughs. He’s staring at you. Intently! Uncomfortably long, even!

>”Y-yes?” You stammer out.

“Oh, sorry! I’ve heard a lot about you Blair. How you really came through for Ashe and how you saved Mercedes when she was hurt. It’s just…the stories really don’t do you any justice.”

>“They often have a habit of being greatly exaggerated.”

“Not this time. Everything I’ve heard really understates just how beautiful you really are.”

You immediately get up, grab another bucket of water, and pour it out onto the coals, adding much more steam.

“H-hey isn’t that a lot?”

>”I like it this way!”

You take a seat back on the bench, an awkward silence now filling the room, before Sylvain does his best to break it.

“Hey, rumor has it you were recently promoted to a Junior Officer in the Black Eagles house. Congratulations!”

>You nod. “Thank you, I’ll be undertaking my first mission this month.”

The boy gives you a serious look. “I hear you’ll be going up against some really tough foes. The bandits in that region are not to be trifled with. Rumor has it they’ve got a fearsome leader and are a true military force to be reckoned with.”

>You look at Sylvain, detecting a hint of…worry? “Thank you for the warning, I have faith that the Professor and Lady Edelgard will lead us to victory.”

Sylvain shakes his head. “But what good is victory if comes at the cost of your life? No…I can’t…”

>“Huh? Is something…?”

“I’ve only just met you but…if anything ever happened to you, I’d…” Sylvain suddenly stands up abruptly and faces you, a determined look on his eyes. “You have my spear, Blair. Just say the word, and I’ll accompany you to the dreaded Tower of Black Winds! I’ll be your knight in shining armor!”

Feeling that familiar blush crawling to your cheeks, you get up and pour even more water onto the coals. The room is now completely imperceptible with the thick layer of steam now blanketing it.

“T-that’s way too much Blair!”

>“Goddess! What’s wrong with you man! You can’t just say things like that! Why would you even want to go to that dreadful place?!”

“My passion and convictions are true, Blair!” You hear from…somewhere in the fog. “I wish to protect that beautiful smile that has eased the souls of my classmates! Please, my lady! Allow your sworn knight, Sylvain Jose Gautier, to accompany you!”

Gautier. It suddenly hits you like a sack of Killer Axes. The bandit leading the group of rogues at the Tower of Black Winds, the one that stole the Heroes’ Relic, his name was Miklan Gautier. That would make him Sylvain’s…something. You recall that this boy has a Crest, and it dawns on you. He’s trying to use you! The Black Eagles have been assigned this mission, and he’s doing anything he can to tag along so that he can settle whatever family feud he has and grab the Lance of Ruin! He must have heard about what you did for Ashe and figured he could tag along on something similar.

You grab the bucket, ready to bat the pushy noble away, when it suddenly dawns on you.

>What if I can use him?

This is the first time where you’ll be serving as an officer. You’re not sure yet what your unit may look like, but you’re pretty damn sure having a Crest user in your ranks will be a tremendous blessing.

In theory, at least. The last time you saw this man, he was throwing down his spear and running away from you, Bernadetta and Petra.

Let's put that shiny new junior officer badge to use! Blair's right that if we're going to go anywhere near the beast then we'll need all the firepower we can get, and from her dealings with Ashe Blair seems to be willing to go the extra mile to her people deal with family matters (could that be stemming from the fact that her own happy family life was cut short too soon...?).

We should probably clear this with The Professor first. The situation is different from the one with Ashe, as he was coming to Gaspard either way to try and talk Lonato down. Sylvain is not coming to Conand Tower unless we get him permission first, and having Byleth give permission and lay down the whole situation before Sylvain makes the choice to join us or not is the way to do this.

The absurdity of this situation isn’t lost on you. Why do all these Blue Lions gravitate towards you, anyway? You’ll have to get the Professor’s approval to have Sylvain accompany you, but if you can manage that, you’ll have a powerful ally backing you up during your first showing as a Junior Officer.

>“Rise, Sylvain Gautier, and attend to me as my knight!” You say, doing your best to sound as serious as humanly possible given the surroundings.

You can’t tell if the boy actually rises. It’s still way too steamy to see anything after all. But you do hear him respond.

“My lady, I will not let you down!”

>“See to it that you do not. And you can drop the act. I’m happy to help you reacquire the Lance of Ruin, so long as you follow my orders while we’re out there.”

“Uhh...r-right.” You can tell from the sudden drop in bravado that the boy is feeling somewhat ashamed of his ploy. “I am yours to command.”

>You feel a bond growing with Sylvain!

>“I’ll focus on getting approval from the Professor. Until then.” You grab your towel and head towards the exit. As you open the door, you spot Caspar, who was just on his way into the sauna.

“Hey Blair!” The youth walks in the room overflowing with steam before stopping abruptly. “W-what happened here?! It’s way too hot!”

You head back to your room, ready to turn in for the night. You notice that you have a new package from the Count. Upon opening it, you find this month’s 500 gold stipend, (1050g Current) and another brief letter.

“Continue the fine work, Blair. Serve Lady Edelgard with anything that she requires.”

Short and sweet, as always. Your new father has such a way with words. You discard the letter and head to sleep.

Classes the next week go on as usual, with you devoting time out of the week to brush up on your magical skills. Another officer meeting is called to discuss unit composition for the upcoming battle. Most of the officers already have their dedicated cadets that serve under them, but seeing as this is your first time leading, you’re not sure who the Professor will be assigning to you. You figure it best to tell her about Sylvain before she assigns you anyone.

“Hmm, I’m not thrilled about it.” Says Professor Byleth. “I’d much rather you did this with your fellow Black Eagles. But, given the circumstances...I suppose I can allow it. If we can get the Lance of Ruin out of Miklan’s hands and into Sylvain’s, it may decide the course of the battle right there.”

“My, you’re growing quite fond of the Blue Lions, aren’t you, Blair?” Says Hubert. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you have plans to leave us for them. I’m sure something like that would just shatter Count Rusalka’s heart.” He adds, snidely.

>“I simply wish to help a fellow cadet in need. If we can add a Relic user to our arsenal, all the better.” You say, hopefully convincingly.

“The other two cadets in your unit will be Xavier and Martha. Both are mages, trained in White and Black magics respectively. With the strong frontline that you and Sylvain can provide, coupled with magical support, I trust that our company won’t find themselves waylaid by any surprise attacks.”

The meeting carries on for a few moments longer, before being dismissed. The excursion to Conand Tower will begin in two weeks. For now, it’s the weekend.

I agree, but the entire first half of the game is just Blue Lion central when talking about plot relevance. On the other hand the only Blue Lion that we've gone out of our way to interact with socially has been Felix.

Ashe and now Sylvain could be argued to be making use of mission appropriate contacts that Black Eagles just didn't have. We did mostly ignore Corrine and instead took the opportunity to talk to the Blue Lions girls on our last mission though. That one could be argued either way. I think we're still ahead on non-mission Black Eagle social options? Too lazy tog o back and check.

>D): Go to the Mess Hall. You still want that Peach Sorbet.

In fairness, from Blair’s perspective, moving houses is just a manner of who she wants to study with and interact with. It would be scandalous to ~disassociate herself with the future Empress, but she wouldn’t have an inkling that it might decide her future allegiance.

As far as she knows, she might just study with the Blue Lions for a few years, with much more pleasant people, and then graduate and become an Adrestian knight who just happens to have Farghus friends.
>>

The biggest question to me in this quest is Byleth's timeskip. I doubt we are going into dragon stasis, so our final faction could be decided later than anons might think.

But 100% of people she's met from the Lions were nice to her.

We can probably lure most of our BE supports to BL if we switch. Corrine might follow her cute Blair, Bernie will probably jump at leaving her terrible father, Dorothea still hates nobles at this stage and has a B rank with Blair and with his war phase paralogue with Mercie Caspar is pretty much an honorary BL.

The hardest one would be Petra because she's a political hostage, but she hates the Empire in all routes including CF so it might be doable.

Black Eagles are a bit weird for me, because they have like only 2 people I don't like with them being Edelgarde and Lindhart, Edelgarde because I just don't agree with her action in the second half of the game, and Lindhart because he's just a lazy shit, like c'mon dude you can sleep in the night and study during the day bruh.
But I don't mind Hubert, he's the right sort of evil dastard that I enjoy so I'm on board getting to know him better.
>>
>>4942146
There's few little reasons here and there
>Stuffy nobles look down on her
See Damien's group.
QM said we'd be seeing negative social consequences for going with Ashe but that doesn't seem to have happened yet.

>Passed over for Junior Officer position repeatedly
Leopold has already pointed this out but I can't believe Corrine the butcher was chosen as a Junior officer over Blair, especially when everyone saw how Blair directed her team to victory in the mock battle. And the whole training session with Leopold was him hammering in that bloodlust is not a good trait to have in a leader of men.

Plus other Houses have had commoners/crestless people as officers since day 1. Ashe is literally the same social status as us and he's made junior officer way before us.

>That one rando from Hubert's death squad wants to beat us up in a dark alley.

>Hubert's giving her the stink eye for just hanging out with some perfectly friendly people.

Also a meta reason but Blair's character has shown be be consistently against wanton violence and tries to do the peaceful solution when possible
>Hated killing defenceless bandit
>Horrified at Corrine desecrating the corpse
>Avoides a village riot
>Spared gaspar soldiers like she couldn't do with the bandit
>Tried to take Lonato alive instead of killing him for the boss exp
>Working with Leopold to tame her bloodlust
I honestly don't see an IC reason for her to sign up for Edelgard's slaughter. To me her ties with the Count and Rex aren't strong enough to justify that much Loyalty to the Empire. The Count sees her as an asset only and their relationship isn't anything like the strong Lonato-Ashe bond. Plus Rex her future leige Lord has very few redeeming features (even Blair was at a loss to talk him up to Hubert) and seems to be everything Blair is trying to avoid (battle hungry ect).
>>
>>4941969
>>D): Go to the Mess Hall. You still want that Peach Sorbet.
I do want Blair to go fishing, especially with that juicy phrasing of 'real' father, but the fishing festival is a perfect time for that plot hook to come up.
>>4942557
These are all very tolerable for most people. We can never avoid dealing with unpleasant people or difficult moral choices, and many of the unpleasant people you've mentioned are people who Blair would have to deal with regardless of which schoolhouse she joins. Black Eagles house is hardly Slytherin, anyway. Blair has friends among them as well as enemies.

Personally I want Blair to stick it out in BE, because conflict drives narrative, and the internal conflict between Blair (as a Black Eagle) and what the Black Eagles/Adrestia will become is a great story.

What Three Houses offers as a game is a lot about perspective and how your view of events changes depending on where you are. What this quest offers is, in turn, a different kind of perspective from the game. Blair is a very different protagonist from the isolation of Byleth, having distinct attachments and duties to the broader society of Fodlan. I want to lean into those attachments, rather than trying to treat Blair as a pseudo-Byleth who can go wherever they want.
>>
>>4942683
Fair enough, I personally think that Blair not being able to go with the Empire due to her morals might also be compelling. We're going to have drama either way because no matter what Blair chooses a good chunk of her friend group will be left on the other side.

Just pointing out that there are reasons for her to switch houses if she wants to.

>Blair as a pseudo-Byleth who can go wherever they want.
But Byleth is the most static character of them all? Unless we're on the church route once they pick a house that's it until. Blair as a POV character switching houses makes her the anti Byleth in this case.

Also if we're talking about switching houses during the school year it's not that odd for someone to do so, other students can do so in game.

Blair has no reason in canon to suspect that what house she chose now determines in who she'll fight for in a war 5 years down the line.
>>
>>4942557
Don't think the others are really that big a deal, but this one specifically I wanted to address.

>Passed over for promotion
What makes Corrine worse than us? The bloodthirst that you admit we also have? She at least doesn't berserk when hurt so it wouldn't degrade her performance. Maybe if we hadn't avoided all of the opportunities to talk with her more we could have found out why she was given the opportunity.

For the commoner/crestless thing, Hubert has no crest and he's been an officer since day one. As for commoners, Dorothea beat us to officer, though I don't remember if it was said when she was tapped for the position.

Leopold told us three things that were strikes against us. Lacking nobility, lacking a crest, and lacking presence with that last one being the worst of them all. Byleth has had us working on Authority(/tactics) since our first mission to help overcome that last one and as soon as we met the benchmark that was set for us, we were given the opportunity to be an officer. That hardly seems like being passed over repeatedly.

Right now I don't think there are any strong reasons to switch houses. Yeah, she doesn't have strong ties to the Count, but she also doesn't really have any reason to oppose his wishes either and jumping ship away from Edelgard would do that.

When the big choice comes I'd argue that Blair as a crestless wonder would actually benefit most from supporting Edelgard's plan. Yeah, the violent revolution isn't really our thing, but the end goals of tearing down the class structure and the tyranny of crests could be something that I'd see our girl being for. Really depends on how it's framed in the moment and whether or not she's been sounded out prior to that turning point.
>>
>>4943410
But is Blair a ''Ends justify the means'' kind of girl? She is pragmatic but is she that pragmatic? I don't think so.
>>
>>4943777
Yeah, she hasn't exactly struck me as the 'plunge the entire continent into war because it will help my station' sort of person. I'm not sure *how* it could feasibly be sold to her in a manner to convince her to side with Edelgard, but I guess I won't dismiss the possibility of coercion or something.
>>
I think in the world where Blair does not have a bunch of voices in her head screaming at her, she would be brought on side of Edelgard by appealing to the justice/idealistic part of E's platform. it's not so much that she would benefit from a Crestless society and more that she sees the difficulties that the current system causes, and might fall into the wake of a powerful reformer like Edelgard. additionally without the influence of the players, someone in Blair's social position would probably naturally come into contact with more of the crestless portions of society, or else be placed in a position where someone's (her own or a friend's) lack of a Crest exposes her to something she sees as unjust.

ofc quest-Blair so far doesn't really have an established opinion on Crests beyond 'I don't want to fight against them' but it's possible that her contact with Sylvain, and her generally less-privileged friends who are more likely to adopt crest-opposing stances, will bring her to a position more likely to sympathize with Edelgard's goals. or perhaps she will feel motivated by feudal duty and loyalty to the girl who is in fact her lawful sovereign. it's not up to someone in Blair's social position to decide if there will be a war, after all. she just fights it. or maybe she will take the position that it's better to guide Edelgard to a less bloody path than to try to oppose her directly. there's lots of ways I can imagine Blair siding with Edelgard without her being forced to, and without compromising her established personality
>>
>>4944424
>it's possible that her contact with Sylvain, and her generally less-privileged friends who are more likely to adopt crest-opposing stances, will bring her to a position more likely to sympathize with Edelgard's goals.
Or, it might make her realize that it's a popular sentiment and that pursuing war for such a change might not be necessary. Besides, she has had far more exposure to the hatred and fanatisism of the anti-cental church folk from what we've seen so far. And the fact that the war decleration comes right off the back of an attempted raid (and endangering all students that tagged along with Byleth to the tomb) and follows with an immediate invasion of Garreg Mach, I can only see it as a really hard sell to get Blair to run on over to the Edelgard's side, even if she might largely agree with her underlying ideals.

Whatever the case, I think I'd like a chance for Blair to introspect on her late father (and by proxy perhaps her view on war) which is why I'd love for her to go fishing

Earning the potential ire of the future heir of House Vestra and aide to her Imperial Majesty has worked up quite an appetite. Fortunately, you remember that the Mess Hall will be serving one of your favorite dishes this week, Peace Sorbet. It’s an impossibly cold frozen dessert that you’ve only had a select few times in your life, but it left a lasting impression on you. As a part of your vow to treat yourself a little nicer, you venture forth to acquire the treat.

The Mess Hall is a common meeting place for students to gather and spend time idling away from the everyday pressures that come with being a cadet at Garreg Mach. As you take up a position in line to order the sorbet, you recall the first time you had the treat.

You had just arrived to Castle Rusalka for the first time, right after your father had died. You were a shut-in mess, refusing to talk or interact with any of the castle’s teachers or servants. Word of your demeanor eventually got back to the Count, who called you to attend to him in the castle’s dining hall. When you arrived, you found him and his son, Rex, sitting there, each with their own bowls of sorbet. They bid you to join them and enjoy the mysterious dessert.

It was the first time you’d ever had anything so delicious. Your real father had been an ordinary soldier in the Count’s army, there was no way he’d ever be able to afford anything so luxurious. You spent the rest of the day eating and getting to know your “new family.” The Count was by all means a friendly, caring gentlemen, who treated you better than he had any right to. Rex was much more abrasive and had quite the tongue on him. You almost had a hard time believing he was a noble, but you could tell he was well-meaning. By the end of that first meal together, the Count had promised that if you performed admirably in your studies, there would be more sorbet as a reward. And there was. You looked forward to the occasion every time it came up.

But eventually, the three of you stopped having those meals together. The Count became more distant, and much colder. Rex became more disinterested in court affairs and was often gone from the castle for months on end. And you eventually left the castle and were sent here.

You snap out of memory lane as a bowl full of Peach Sorbet is handed to you by one of the Mess Hall’s attendants. As you turn around and look for a place to eat, you hear a voice call out your name.

“Blair! Over here! Sit with us!”

You spot Dorothea waving at you. At her table is Bernadetta, who looks mortified by Dorothea’s yelling gathering unwanted attention from the other students, and Edelgard. You sit down with the three girls to enjoy your sorbet.

“I didn’t know you had a sweet tooth, Blair.” Remarks Edelgard.

>You nod, staving off the brain freeze the first bite gives you. “Mhm, it’s a guilty pleasure of mine.”

“I love the sorbet here.” Says Bernadetta. “So soft, but so flavorful as well. It’s a small comfort in this cruel world.”

>The four of you bond over frozen treats!
>You gain a C-Support with Edelgard!

The next week comes, and you spend it brushing up on your tactical skills. While you still haven’t had a chance to speak with Xavier or Martha, you’ve been overlooking some strategies for mages, and you’re confident you’ll be able to make adequate use of the two of them.

The expedition to Conand Tower will take place next week, but for now, you have one last opportunity to enjoy some free time.

As you stand outside, pondering how you’ll spend today’s free time, someone grabs your left arm from behind and wraps themselves around it.

“You look bored.” Remarks Corrine. “Let’s grab a seat and get some tea. It’s a beautiful day today.”

>“You never struck me as the type to be into tea parties.”

“A well-rounded girl has many interests.” She purrs.

>You sigh. Well, why not. You figure you owe her after fighting side by side back at Tauros Village. “Sure, but give me my arm back!”
The Monastery holds many attractions, but none are quite so well-regarded as the Tea Grounds. The Tea Grounds serve as an outdoor dining area, where students can take a seat and enjoy a varied collection of brews from across Fodlan. The grounds are often considered a popular date spot, a fact that embarrasses you to no end as you observe some of the other couples currently enjoying themselves. You settle on a Sweet-Apple Blend, while Corrine orders a strong Mint Blend. You both grab a table, taking shade underneath an attached parasol.

>As you both sit there, sipping your tea, you’re the first to speak. “It occurs to me that…we’ve never had an actual conversation.”

“No, back during the march to Tauros Village, you were much more content to make friends of those Blue Lion girls than spend time with little old me.” Corrine teases.

>“It’s not exactly like we hit it off well the first time.” You grimace, recalling your interactions at Zanado.

“Perhaps we got off on the wrong foot. Now seems like a good time to start over though, no? Let’s get to know each other better.” She smiles, taking a sip of her tea.

>“Very well. You’re a talented fighter. Your wild nature in battle makes me think that you never trained with a Man-at-Arms, but the way you cut through your foes so efficiently strikes me as someone who’s done this before. Where did you learn to fight?”

“I’m self-taught.”

>”R-really?”

“Of course.” Corrine puts down her cup. “My full name is Corrine de Clare. I am the fifth daughter of a minor Baron in the Boramus territory of the Empire. Father had no greater aspirations for me than to shut up and present well so that I could be married to some noble with deep pockets. That seemed like a bore though, so I took it upon myself to learn how to fight. Eventually, I found that I had something of a talent for it.

>“And how did you discover that?” You ask, dread mounting.

Corrine smiles. “I stole an axe from the armory and snuck away to the woods. I started small. Rabbits first. The occasional deer. Father thought I’d been taking lessons with a singing coach he’d hired for my sisters and me. He never was very bright. I threatened the woman that’d she be the next target I’d practice on if she told anyone what I was doing. I was always quite the troublemaker. That kept me covered, for a while at least.”

>You momentarily forget about your tea. “I take it animals weren’t the only thing you practiced on.”

Corrine takes a sip. “I became somewhat of a folk tale in Boramus. Villagers would see a girl, dressed in full noble regalia, taking practice swings with an axe in the forest. I imagine it was quite the sight. Eventually, some boys who’d caught word of what was going on followed me out there one day. They’d had some lofty ideas of things they wanted to do to me.” Corrine smirks. “In hindsight, I probably could have high-tailed it out of there, but I’d wanted something bigger than a rabbit for a change. I let them come closer thinking they’d be in for a treat, and then…” Corrine places her cup on the table with some considerable force. “Chop.”

>“So you had killed before coming to the Academy?”

“Three village boys. Unfortunately, I couldn’t hide them as well as the rabbits. Not to mention I came back to the castle covered in blood. Father was none too pleased. The villagers were even madder. They’d threatened to riot right there, thinking that those ‘sweet little boys’ were just fodder for some noble’s deranged daughter. Eventually, Father relented, growing tired of my antics and the ‘shame’ I brought to the family. I was sent to an imperial academy in Enbarr, far away. That’s where I met Hubert. It was at the recommendation of House Vestra that I come to Garreg Mach. Father knows his place and was happy to comply.”

>“That’s quite a lot to take in…You’re from a noble family but it sounds like you want nothing to do with them. If that’s the case…what do you want? Why come to the Academy? What’s your end goal?”

Corrine stares at her tea for a moment. If you didn’t know any better, she looks almost…sad. “I don’t have one. At Boramus I was just a tool for my father. Someone to marry off to strengthen the family. Here, I’m just a tool for the Empire. A weapon to throw at Edelgard’s enemies, until I’m eventually killed and discarded. In either case, there’s nothing to look forward to. I might as well try and enjoy myself before the end.”

>“You make it sound as if you expect to die soon.”

An awkward silence follows before Corrine lets out her trademark laugh. “I appear to have rambled on a bit. Forgive me, Blair. You’re so cute, I just want to tell you all my secrets!”

>You sigh. It appears the serious nature of today’s conversation has ended. The two of you finish your tea, before departing.

“That was fun, we’ll have to do it again sometime. Until then!”

>You feel a stronger bond growing with Corrine!

That was quite the day. Before turning in, you decide to see if there’s any last-minute shopping you might want to do before the mission.

I was somewhat thinking to sell the iron sword but Blair might want to use it later, training for her Falcon Knight certs or to take advantage of Levin Swords. You look like a girl who’s just been told by her mother that she doesn’t have enough money to buy her some sweets. At least that’s how you feel as you stare at the Armory’s brand-new Killer Lance that they have in stock. As you look inside your purse to see if there’s any loose gold, you resign to your fate. Maybe with enough scrounging or even taking an odd job here or there, you’ll be able to afford the weapon.

The day of the operation to Conand Tower is here. Ensuring your gear is all set and prepared, you venture forth to the staging area, where you’ll be meeting your teammates, Xavier and Martha, as well as Sylvain. As you arrive, you notice that many of the Black Eagles are already here. As you wait around for your squad to arrive, you’re approached by two cadets, a perky looking female redhead, and an unfortunately bald for his age male youth.

“Are you Blair?” The redhead asks.

>You nod. “That would be me, yes. I take it the two of you are Martha and Xavier?”

The bald one speaks. “That would be correct, a pleasure to meet you, Blair. May the Goddess watch over us as we seek to deliver justice.

>“Err…yes. May she.”

“You’ll have to excuse Baldy over here. He’s very much the devout, pious type. Even shaved his own head cause of it. Why’d you do that again, Baldy?”

“I told you to stop calling me that!” The boy snaps. “And if you must know, vanity is a sin in the face of the Goddess and her creations.”

“Aren’t you worried the shine caused by your head may give away your position to an enemy archer?” Asks Martha.

“The Goddess protects.”

>You interrupt this scene before it gets any more ridiculous. “Hair or not, I’m glad to have you both aboard. I understand you’re well-versed in magic?”

The two mages cease their bickering to regard you.

“Aye, my healing spells will ensure that we stand true.” Xavier responds. “Don’t get the wrong idea either, I’ve also been instructed in offensive white magic as well. Any enemy that seeks to make an easy target out of me will regret it.

Martha reaches her hand out. You can see little flames dancing across her fingertips. “I’m all about offensive magic. Fire magic to be specific! I’ll roast those freaks! By the time we’re done with this mission, you’ll never want to eat grilled meat again!”

>“Right…well, I intend for Sylvain and I to provide adequate defense for the two of you to work your spells.”

“Speaking of which, where is the Faergus cadet that will be accompanying us?” Asks Xavier.

>“…Good question.”

All the cadets were supposed to have been here by now. Yours is the only unit that is not entirely present. You’re sure that boy was given the proper instructions.

“Cadets! Move out!” You hear Professor Byleth yell.

What the hell!? Where is he?! Yours is the only unit standing still as the others begin to fall into formation. After what seems like an eternity of just standing around as the other units begin marching, you spot Sylvain running towards your group. You notice that his uniform is only halfway on.

“Blair! Sorry I’m late!” He says, breathing heavily. “You wouldn’t believe the night I had. I was up all night with this girl. I tried to sneak out this morning so I wouldn’t disturb her sleep, but then she started freaking out! I had to lose her, but it was such a hassle. Then I realized I forgot my uniform and…”

You’ve read about situations like this in your studies. The occasional “dressing down” you’d have to give an insubordinate or incompetent soldier. While you never expected to have to do it so early in your blossoming officer career, you know that ignoring Sylvain’s tardiness may lead to some worse issues further down the line. You don’t wait for the boy to finish his jumbled excuse making as you interrupt him.

>“Gautier!” You raise your voice. “Shut the hell up and listen good! I didn’t have to bring your sorry ass to this mission! You’re here under my orders and you’ll damn well follow them to the letter! If that’s too difficult for you to understand, let me know now and I’ll find someone more capable!”

You’re not sure how natural that came out. You suddenly realize that it’s kind of hard to reprimand someone who’s much taller than you. But fortunately, your words seem to have cut through to Sylvain, who looks as though he’s seen a ghost.

“Y-yes, I’m sorry. Please forgive me, Blair. I will follow your command with no issues.” Sylvain stammers out.

>“Good, we’re leaving now.” You tun, followed by your unit, and reconnect with the rest of the Black Eagles.

Conand Tower is located between the Kingdom’s territories of Fraldarius and Galatea. Many years ago, it was used as a fortification in the Crescent Moon War, where the Leicester Alliance declared their independence from the Kingdom of Faergus. The tower has remained unmanned since then, however from the intel you received, the walls still stand strong. Miklan Gautier and his band have been using it as a staging ground to rob passing caravans, making a fortune, and the local militia are completely outclassed. You hope that you’ll fare better than they did.

“Do you guys know why they call this place the Tower of Black Winds?” Chimes Martha, breaking the silence that’s been following your group ever since you yelled at Sylvain.

>“No, please enlighten us.”

“Legends say that a Knight of Faergus single-handedly defended this place from a Leicester army. He was a ferocious fighter, clad in jet black armor, who slew his enemies with no remorse! Eventually, he was slain at the very top of the spire, but with his dying breath, he vowed to haunt the tower and ensure it never fell into enemy hands. Soon after, a mysterious wind blew in, soldiers from the Leicester army began feeling ill, catching mysterious illnesses that crippled some and outright killed others. They soon fled the tower, and since then, it’s remained unoccupied by all.”

Xavier snorts. “Clearly just a superstition, otherwise we wouldn’t have to be venturing to this forsaken tower in the first place.”

Martha shrugs. “Hey, you never know. Could be there’s a monster waiting for us there! Don’t say I didn’t warn ya!”

“There’s a monster in there, alright.” You hear Sylvain mumble from under his breath.

Three days pass, and you find yourself outside the dreaded Tower of Black Winds you’ve heard so much about. You’ll give the stories some credit, the place looks imposing. Though you’re not sure whether to credit that to the dark stone masonry, the gloomy overcast sky, or the impaled heads of presumably Faergus soldiers and merchants that ran afoul of the bandits.

“Seiros preserve! What manner of fiend would do something like this?!” Exclaims Xavier.

“Dear old brother never did know when enough was enough…” Sylvain mumbles again.

Brother? You knew he was related to Miklan somehow, but brothers? No wonder he’s been a mess the last three days.

“Looks like there’s no one out here to greet us.” Says Martha. “Guess they’re all holed up inside.”

You recall your mission briefing. This Miklan is apparently an experienced tactician. You’re certainly going to have your work cut out for you. You recall the strategy books you’ve been reading lately often talking about “psyching up” your soldiers. Perhaps some words of encouragement may go a long way here?

>C): "We're the rearguard, so the others are depending on us. Stay ready for anything."
Something short and simple is all that Blair is capable of. There are a few things that would make this better oratory, like being specific about who 'the others' are (using the names of those we're protecting to make it tangible) or saying our soldiers' names to make it direct to them. But Blair is only Authority C and is a bit of a social brick so I don't think she'd be aware of that kind of thing.

While the strategy books you read often mentioned officers giving their subordinates rousing speeches before leading them into battle, they offered scant detail as to what to actually say. Clearing your throat, you attempt to give it your best shot.

>“Stay calm, and don’t die.”

The three cadets under your command stop what they are doing to stare at you with a blank look plastered on each of their faces.

>Oh no! Salvage this, think fast!

>“Uhh, we’re the rearguard, so the others are depending on us. Stay ready for anything.”

That doesn’t seem to inspire much confidence either, but at least that judgmental look has been wiped off their faces. You hear the clarion call from further ahead, signaling that the Black Eagles are getting ready to assault the tower. Taking up your spear, you move forward, Sylvain, Martha and Xavier following behind.

As mentioned earlier, your job is to serve as the rearguard while the others cut a pathway into the tower. As such, you’re not immediately exposed to the fighting that’s taking place further ahead, but you can certainly hear the commotion as Edelgard and the Professor lead the vanguard. Already men and women are screaming as the sounds of battle reach your ears.

“Dorothea! Bernadetta! Concentrate your fire on those archers up above!” You hear Professor Byleth yell.

“Y-You heard her! Fire!” Bernadetta commands her unit. A wave of arrows and flame wash the upper parapets of the tower as the bandits flee from their vantage point.

“Press onward!” Byleth orders, the entire army making their way into the tower. You and your unit are the last ones through the gate. The inside of the tower is surprisingly spacious, and in much better condition than a supposedly derelict tower has any right to be. You won’t find any breakable walls here, Miklan seems to have seen to that much at least.

The bandits had formed a defensive line at the hallway’s entrance to try and stop you, but after being peppered by Bernadetta and Dorothea’s initial assault, they’ve pulled back further into the tower.

“When are we going to get to the front?” Sylvain asks, a hint of impatience in his voice.

>“As soon we can make sure the way is cle-“

Just as you speak, you hear a distinct sound coming from the direction that you and everyone else had entered through. If you didn’t know any better, it sounds almost like…hooves?

>“Cavaliers!”

Miklan must have had scouts watching the Black Eagles enter the tower, and now plans to flank you from behind. If they manage to get passed you, they’ll tear a hole right through Bernadetta and Dorothea.

>A): Call for a defensive formation. Have Xavier and Martha get behind you while you and Sylvain hold them off.
>B): Move forward towards the cavaliers, the less space between them and your ranged units, the better.

In the game, Blair and Sylvain would both have Knightkneeler. I know there are no combat arts here, but it's a tool that I miss in situations like this.
That thought makes me wonder what Blair's combat art list would look like. With her hybrid growths, probably Frozen Lance, Hexblade, or another of the magic-damage arts. No Vengeance, or else she's just too much like Bernadetta, but she doesn't fight enough like Dimitri with Glowing Ember, or the speed-based characters who get e.g. Windsweep or Lance Jab. Can I wish that she has Swift Strikes...? Better not, lol, Swift Strikes is always a character-defining combat art. Hit and Run would make Blair a bit too similar to Ingrid, especially if Blair has Frozen Lance. She might just have Monster Piercer and Frozen Lance for her Lance arts.
What do you all think? What about for other weapon types?
>>4951846
'>C:'
The cavaliers are still just a sound, and will catch up. Waiting for them is just wasting time that could be spent better.
I suppose it's possible that unless Blair splits her group up that she's just choosing which of Bernadetta and Dorothea, her closest in-house friends, gets donked.
If you want to split up so that neither Bernadetta nor Dorothea gets donked then something like this?
'>D): Ask your squad to set up a defensive formation here, while you go cover Dorothea's flank.'
Blair could probably take care of those Myrmidons proficiently, since she has Swordbreaker, and then come relieve her crew, who would be very hard pressed without her. Alternatively she could stay back and send Sylvain forward, since he's so eager to keep moving:
'>D): Stay here and protect Bernadetta while sending Sylvain ahead to cover those worrying noises behind that wall.'
Something like this might appeal to Blair in that she's taking the most dangerous position of stopping all those cavaliers herself, while protecting both of her friends' squads. But it's also possible with both of these votes to split that it's trying to do too many things.

To be clear about what I'm voting for:
>C): You can overhear movement to your left. There’s movement behind that wall, and they may be intending to flank you. Clear them out.
>D): Stay here and protect Bernadetta while sending Sylvain ahead to cover those worrying noises behind that wall.

But in general I think it's most important to keep moving forward and being proactive - we're not going to stay here for the rest of the fight. The rest of the Black Eagles are going to keep moving forward and Blair and company can't get bogged down, especially if we want to position Sylvain to see his brother.
I also want Blair to adopt a mobile way of thinking in her commanding - she plans to be a Pegasus Knight, and that means staying fast and agile, not hunkering down. Even though Blair is in Gilbert's place, that doesn't mean she has to fight like him. Blair's victory in the mock battle came through manuevering her squad actively and with purpose. She should keep that up.
>>
>>4951846
>D): Stay in a defensive formation and send Sylvain to deal with those noises you heard.

I really hope Sylvain doesn't break formation afterwards to go after his brother.
>>
>>4951846
>A): Call for a defensive formation. Have Xavier and Martha get behind you while you and Sylvain hold them off.
Never abandon a defensive position, especially a chokepoint when you're outnumbered.

>“Sylvain, to my side! We’ll hold them off here and let Martha and Xavier back us up with their magic!”

“Right!” Sylvain retorts, wielding his spear and taking up position next to you.

It doesn’t take long for that first wave of cavaliers to reach you. While they were galloping at you full force, they have no choice but to slow down when it comes to turning the corner to where your unit is positioned. You aren’t sure if these cavaliers were expecting to get the jump on soft targets, but the first bandit that you spot has a surprised look on his face as he gallops towards you, only to have his horse’s head impaled by your spear. You stop it dead in it’s tracks as the rider is knocked off it’s back.

>10xp gained! (30/100)

To your side, Sylvain does the same, knocking the bandit off the back of his steed and to the ground. The two cavaliers that accompanied them become entangled in the mess of flailing limbs both human and animal alike and are unable to breach the defense that you and Sylvain form. One of the cavaliers still on his horse screams in agony as he’s engulfed in flames, falling to the ground off his steed. The other cavalier is surrounded by some sort of light magic, which intensifies as the man rapidly withers, almost as if the very blood inside him had been sucked out.

“Nosferatu!” You hear Xavier yell.

Before the first cavalier that ran into you can get off the ground, you’re already on him, plating your spear firmly through his throat. He jerks a bit, before laying still. To your side, Sylvain has already executed his bandit.

>30xp gained! (60/100)

You can hear the sound of more horse hooves up ahead, signaling that this was not the only wave of cavaliers that intended to flank you. Behind you, you can hear the fighting growing somewhat dimmer. The other units must be pushing back the bandits further ahead.

>“Maintain formation! There’s more horsemen com-!”

As you’re barking your commands, you spot movement from up above. Two of the archers that had fled upon Bernadetta and Dorothea’s initial assault have returned, and they have their bows trained upon your group. They let loose two arrows, both of which find their mark hitting you and Sylvain. (Blair, 23/29, Sylvain, 24/30).

From behind, you spot two bandits, each decked with short swords, charging your position. These bandits must have been the source of noise you had heard to your left. If left unmolested, they’ll make contact with Xavier and Martha shortly.

Further ahead, the sounds of the second wave of cavaliers’ hooves are getting closer. They’ll be ramming into you shortly.

>A): Maintain position. Xavier and Martha will have to hold off the Myrmidons on their own.

With both flanks exposed we can't hold this location and we're getting dangerously far behind the main group, we lock down the Myrmidons while the rest of the team pulls back and prepares to handle the next wave of Cavaliers coming around the corner. Best of the best we manage to kill both Myrmidons, but keeping them in check and manuvering ourselves north whilst stalling is the priority.

>“Pull back! Leave these swordsmen to me!” You yell, as you charge towards the enemy myrmidons that are intending to flank you.

The swordsmen are cut off from your mages as you step into the fray. Immediately, they turn to you as their primary target, but find that they’re both unable to get through your iron-clad defense. You subconsciously note that training with your lance so much since coming to the academy has paid off wonderfully.

Both swordsmen are parried by your spear, and you retaliate with a jab to each bandit, sending both of them backing off. (-17 HP x2 Myrmidons).

>20 xp gained!

The bandit swordsmen reel in pain, but don’t have time to dwell on it for long as they’re stuck down by Martha and Xavier, who are pulling back to rejoin with the main group. The two mages are able to successfully pull back without being harassed by the myrmidons or the archers above thanks to your efforts. Unfortunately, though, you and Sylvain are still well within range of the archers above, who intend on turning you into pincushions. Both men above pull their bowstrings, and arrows find their way into Sylvain’s arm and your chest. (Blair, 17/29 HP, Sylvain, 18/30).

You seethe as you rip the arrow out, just in time for the cavaliers to turn the corner. One of the horsemen that faces you is wielding a sword, while the other has a sharp looking lance. They’ll be charging your position momentarily.

yes, you get a group of thieves. on maddening difficulty in the game, this level is one of the most difficult and they're part of it. they're the absolute WORST because they have PASS which means they can move through your units in order to reach your squishies. they're not same-turn, thankfully but you have to be on the ball to kill them immediately or they will run past whatever you tried to use to defend and will kill your archers and mages.

>“Martha! We’re taking fire here! Deal with those archers!”

“Did you say fire?!” Martha retorts, hands alight with magic. Turning her attention towards the archers up above, she launches a fireball towards one of the bandits just as he lets loose an arrow in her direction. The arrow strikes true, catching her in the ribs and causing her to scream out, (-10 HP, Martha 14/24) but the archer fares much worse, becoming engulfed in searing flames. Clutching her ribs with one hand, Martha uses the free one to launch another fireball, turning the unfortunate bandit into ash.

In front of you, the cavalier with the sword charges first. He’s galloping towards you at full speed, but his short sword proves to be an ineffective weapon. You sidestep to your left at the last second and swipe your spear horizontally, knocking the man off his steed. The horse continues galloping forward, but you don’t think much of it as you plunge your spear into the bandit’s face, killing him.

>D): Tell Xavier to heal up Sylvain and Martha before joining you.
Assuming that the charge ahead option applies to Blair alone because both Martha and Sylvain need healing bad. We need to buy them time so they can heal up - priority goes to Sylvain because he's melee.

Hopefully with swordbreaker + fiery blood damage we can soften up up enough for the mages/archers to kill off.

Healing up now gets rid of the fiery blood bonus so that's a no go if we're going into a 4 vs 1.

You can still move, and in your mind, that means you can still. Your job was to protect the army’s backline, and by Seiros you intend to see that to completion.

>“Xavier! Get these two back up! I’ll deal with the bandits ahead!”

If the bald teen has any reservations about you throwing yourself amidst the clutches of four armed men, he keeps them to himself as his hands begin glowing with healing magic.

Charging forward with your spear in hand, you’re able to catch up with the four bandits in question who were lying in ambush ready to strike. The firs thief that you come across was clearly not expecting you to get through his mounted comrades so quickly. He lets out a stifled scream as your spear goes straight through his spine, splattering his comrades with blood.

>30xp gained! Level Up!

Blair d'Rusalka
Level 11 Fighter (0/100)
HP: 30 (80%) + 1 = 31
STR: 15 (45%) + 1 = 16
MAG: 11 (50%)
DEX: 8 (45%)
SPD:13 (55%) + 1 = 14
LCK: 9 (30%)
DEF: 9 (50%) + 1 = 10
RES: 5 (25%)
CHARM: 10 (40%)

The bandit’s comrades don’t waste anytime falling upon you, swords in hands. Seeing red from having been hurt, you’re feeling like a whirlwind of death. Using your recent training, you’re able to deflect most of the flurry of blades that comes your way effortlessly, counterattacking with your own spear thrusts. One of the bandits does manage to overwhelm you, nicking you with a cut across the cheek, but you’re able to do far worse amid their collective strikes. (Blair, - 6 HP 17/31) (23 Damage dealt to Bandits 16, 17 and 18).

Up above, the three bandit archers train their bows on you, ready to shoot. Before they can fire, one bandit has an arrow go through his throat, while the other is sizzled in her skin by lightning.

“We’ve got your back, Blair!” You hear Dorothea yell.

The third archer that was trained on you decides to back off upon no longer having free reign to shoot at you with zero retaliation.

From behind you, Sylvain charges in, healed up by Xavier’s magic. With a roar, he impales the bandit to your right, finishing him off. To your left, the bandit that was reeling from your counterattack is caught on fire, flailing away mindlessly. The bandit directly in front of you drops his sword in surrender, but you’ve been instructed to take no prisoners here. You swipe your spearpoint across his throat, ending his life.

>30xp gained! (30/100)

The main force is advancing further into the tower. As the last of the ambush unit is struck down, you hear heavy clanking coming from behind and to your right. Two heavily armored bandits appear from each side. They look like they’ll take some considerable effort to finish off.

With three mages on our side, we *can* probably take them, but I don't want us to get too seperated from the main force in case another ambush is launched while we're seperated.

The Black Eagles continue their push, with Miklan’s bandits crumbling further under the assault. The disgraced noble is certainly a cut above the average run-of-the-mill cutthroat, but against the combined forces of the Professor and the Black Eagles, even his well-laid ambushes fail to make a dent in your advance. Eventually, the defensive line the bandits had finally cracks. Some of them are able to escape up to the parapets, where you can hear what must be Miklan shouting orders. The rest that are unable to escape are put to the sword without mercy.

“Hold your ground!” You hear the Professor yell, waving an ornate looking golden sword. From what you recall, the blade is known as the Sword of the Creator. A Heroes’ Relic among Relics, the Professor laid claim to the weapon during last month’s incident.

“Listen up! Miklan and the last of his followers are up ahead.” The Professor says. At her side is a Knight of Seiros with bold orange hair and a serious expression on his face. You recall the others mentioning that his name was Gilbert.

“I don’t know what he has planned, but I want a small group moving forward with myself to take him out. The rest of you are to stay out here and follow Sir Gilbert’s orders, mopping up any remaining bandits that try and break through.”

“Do we get a choice?! Count me out!” Yells Bernadetta.

Byleth shakes her head. “You’re with me, Berndaetta. That goes for Edelgard, Hubert, Caspar, Linhardt, Petra, and Blair too. You can take the Gautier boy with you as well, Blair.”

You’re surprised to hear your name called! It seems the Professor is taking notice of your actions. Or perhaps she’s bringing you to along to babysit Sylvain. Either way, you have Xavier fully heal the two of you before getting ready to venture forth. As the magic is working its way through your body, you turn to Sylvain. The boy’s usual cheerful and lighthearted demeanor has vanished, a grim look on his face.

>“Hey, are you alright?” You ask.

Sylvain doesn’t answer or even look at you, gaze fixed forward on the staircase leading to where his brother is.

>“You don’t need to do this, you know? You can stay here if you like. No one will judge you for it.”

Sylvain turns towards you, a sad smile on his face. “That’s nice of you to say. But this has been a long time coming.”

>You nod. “Very well. I’ll help you see this to completion then.”

You grimly note to yourself that between assisted patricide and now fratricide, you’re developing quite the habit.

“Move up!” Commands Byleth. You shoulder your spear and head up the stairs with the rest of your allies. As you enter through the doors, you spot a group of bandits, huddled together. It seems they were waiting for you and intend to make their last stand here. The armored knight that seems to be in charge of these fools is covered in grimy, but durable looking plate armor. You gulp as you see that in his hands lies a wicked looking golden spear that can only be the Lance of Ruin. That would make this man Miklan.

“Well now, I expected they’d send someone after me sooner or later, but to think the Church would send my own crest-bearing fool of a brother for my head.” Miklan says, snidely.

“Give up, Miklan!” Shouts back Sylvain. “Surrender the Lance of Ruin and order your men to throw down their arms. We can still end this without the need for any further bloodshed!”

“Shut up! You really think I’d surrender to the likes of you?! I’ve got the Heroes’ Relic now, and that means I can blow you all away with ease! And besides, your head would look mighty fine impaled at the end of my Lance! Attack!”

>A): Sylvain is gunning for Miklan. Aid him in striking down his brother. Without their commander, the other bandits should rout easily.

Yeah I don't see Blair leaving Sylvain in the lurch like this, she cares too much. Her sticking close also means that Sylvain's personal is always active so he gets +attack/-damage.

Also with this we either get the spear away from Milan and avoid the black beast fight all together or we trigger it quicker cos we piss off Miklan which means all the other mooks won't be a problem anyway.

You told Sylvain you’d back him up, and in this case, that means ignoring the fodder and going for the big-bad himself. With a roar, the world explodes around you as both sides cease their stand off and charge at each other. Spears in hand, you and Sylvain charge towards the much larger Miklan, who is brandishing the Lance of Ruin. According to your debriefing, Miklan should not be able to call upon the weapon’s terrifying latent power, but it’s still a terrifying sight to behold. You’re not sure if it’s a trick of the light or battle fatigue, but it almost looks like the weapon is pulsating, almost as if it’s alive.

BOSS: Miklan Gautier
Level 12 Armored Knight, Equipped: Lance of Ruin (+22 Damage)
HP: 44, STR: 18, MAG: 8, DEX: 12, SPD:9, LCK: 15, DEF: 18, RES: 3, CHARM: 16

Sylvain strikes first, locking blades with his brother.

“You don’t know what you’re doing Miklan! Without a crest, that weapon is only a hindrance!”

“Shut up, fool! The Relic’s power is mine, and no one will stop me!”

A glow pulsates around Sylvain as he activates the Crest of Gautier. Tapping into his hidden source of power, he’s able to bat back the much larger man, before plowing his spear through his brother’s shoulder plate, shattering the armor and letting loose a gush of blood. (Miklan, 35/44 HP)

“Gah!” Miklan shouts, falling a few steps back. As he does, something strange happens. The weapon in his hand glows a bright red, pulsating brighter and brighter as MIklan continues screaming. (BOSS: 25/44 HP).

Miklan is clearly suffering from…something much more than Sylvain’s attack. But there’s no time to deduce what’s going on. He’s on the ropes and you won’t let an opportunity like this pass you by. You charge.

“Blair! Wait!” You hear the Professor yell just as you close in.

You lash out with your spear, just as Miklan pulls his head back. You’re able to graze his cheek (22/44 HP) but do no more. Taking a step back, Miklan retaliates, impaling you upon the Lance of Ruin. (30 Damage, Blair 1/31 HP).

“Stupid girl! Who do you think you are?!”

The world suddenly grows very dark and very quiet around you. You’re sure you can hear Sylvain and the Professor yelling your name, but it seems too far away to make much sense. You’re sure you should be dead right now, but that same pulsating red light appears, and Miklan pulls the Lance out, screaming in agony. (BOSS: 12/44)

You figure if you’re going to die, you might as well die trying to be useful. Using the last of your strength and rage, you scream, blood gushing out of your chest and mouth as you stick your own lance directly through the back of Miklan’s armor. (BOSS: 5/44).

>20xp gained! (50/100)

You then promptly fall to the floor, as you’re surrounded by fuzzy figures. Before you can pass out, the world suddenly gains volume again, and you’re snapped back to your senses. (Blair, 16/31 HP)

“Blair! Blair! Are you okay?!” Lindhart yells in your face, shaking you. The Professor and Sylvain are also standing over your form, looking worried. From further up ahead, you can hear Miklan, shouting and cursing. Pulsating red lights continue to envelop the room that you’re in.

“W-what the hell?! W-what’s happening?! “

Sylvain turns from your side to address his brother. You’re unsure of what’s going on, but the fighting seems to have ceased. “Drop the Lance, Miklan!”

“I-I can’t!”

You hear rumbling, followed by panic screaming from both sides. Some of the bandits that were not killed in the initial fighting attempt to run out of the room, but you can hear that they’re promptly stopped by Gilbert and the others outside. As Linhardt helps you to your feet, you’re shocked by what you see.

You’ve heard about Demonic Beasts before. Wandering monstrosities that prey upon humans in remote corners of the world. You’ve never seen one in person, and always assumed it was a legend meant to scare misbehaving children, but standing where Miklan was, you can plainly see that is not the case.

“GYAAAAAAAAARGHHH”

From behind, you can hear the other students racing up the stairs at the sound the beast’s roar.

“Cadets! To Arms! Form up into your units!” The Professor yells “Stay close together! Do not move in to engage the beast until I give you the signal! Mages, provide support!

Brandishing the Sword of the Creator, the Professor charges directly towards…Miklan?

“Blair!” Linhardt snaps you back to reality. “The Professor needs me, are you well enough to fight?!”

Miklan's stats are a combination of Hard and Maddening. With a combination of 40 Attack against Blair's 10 Defense, he'd actually do 30 damage against her.

Now where I fucked up, is that early on in this fight, I realized that I forgot to add a point of Blair's HP when calculating her last level-up. I thought it wouldn't really matter anyway because it was just 1 HP so I'd add it later.

>You nod your head. “Don’t worry about me. Back up the Professor. I can still fight if I have to.”

Linhardt examines you closely, a hint of worry on his face, as if you suffered some cognitive injury in addition to your physical one. “If you say so.”

“We’ll keep her safe, no need to worry.” You hear a voice to your left. Turning, you spot Martha coming to your side.

“By the Goddess! That fiend transformed into this?!” Xavier yells, taking position at your right.

The beast roars, shambling on its hind legs. Destruction is left in its wake as it flails around, knocking down the surrounding walls and fragments of the ceiling. It fixes its blood red eyes directly on your group and begins moving faster than you would think a beast of its size would be capable of. You brace yourself for impact when suddenly something flies out of the corner of your eye, slashing the beast in its face.

“Mages and Archers! Fire at will!” The Professor yells, retracting the Sword of the Creator.

All at once, projectiles both physical and magical are launched at the beast. Fire and Thunder spells explode upon impact while arrows stick into its hide, but the creature seems hardly as hindered by those blows as it was by the Professor’s Relic Weapon.

“It’s still standing!” Exclaims Xavier. “What manner of beast is this?!”

It moves closer to the group you’re in, raising a hind leg to strike at it, only for the blow to be deflected by Gilbert, the man wielding a large tower shield. He cuts at that same leg, with his axe, eliciting a cry from the beast, only for it to raise its arm and strike the man, launching him into a nearby wall.

“Surround it on all sides!” The Professor yells.

>You beckon Martha and Xavier to follow you to the creatures left side. “This way!”

As cadets attempt to surround the creature from all sides, you can see that smoke is beginning to ebb from its mouth. More and more smoke gathers, and that’s when you notice the Crest of Gautier, the same as Sylvain’s, flash over its head.

>“Get out of the way!”

The beast launches the smoke at the backline of students. You can hear screams coming from that direction as the cadets standing there are engulfed in the smog. As it dissipates, you can see that most of them are still moving, albeit entangled in some sort of thornlike substance that is hindering their ability to retreat. Your stomach lurches as you see that among them, Dorothea is struggling to crawl away. The beast moves closer to finish them off until something stops it in its tracks.

“Miklan! Over here!” Sylvain yells.

The beast stops its war path, turning to face the Gautier heir.

“Gotta say, this is an improvement over your usual appearance!”

The beast roars, moving closer towards Sylvain.

“Well, if you want to kill me so bad, here’s your chance!”

The beast is distracted, focusing entirely on Sylvain, when you hear the Professor yell.

“Attack it all at once! Now!”

Cadets from the remaining three sides that are standing all charge in, and you’re among them, as Martha and Xavier fire their own magical assault at the beast. As you close in, you forego any thoughts about personal safety. Miklan nearly killed you in one strike, he’s now almost killed Dorothea, and if you don’t stop him here, he’ll kill Sylvain. Deep down inside, the only thing you desire is for your lance to be the one that sends him to hell. You let loose a battle cry and plunge the spear into his side with all your might, as every other Black Eagle also gives it their all.

>20xp gained! 70/100

The beast roars in true pain, stopping its death march towards Sylvain. As it’s stunned, you spot the Professor, running towards the beast’s front. With deft grace, she leaps into the air, brandishing the Sword of the Creator, and impales the beast directly in its head. It gives one final agonizing cry as the Professor jumps off, staggering on its hind legs and struggling to stay upright, before it topples over onto the ground, no longer moving. Just as suddenly as he appeared, the monster dissipates into a black mist, until all that remains is the corpse of Miklan, and the Lance of Ruin, no longer pulsating that ominous red.

The silence takes over, and the Battle of Conand Tower is over.

You rush to Dorothea’s side as soon as the beast vanishes. Already, Linhardt is there attending to the girl, along with the other white mages in his unit giving attention to the rest of the cadets that were affected by the Black Beast’s attack.

>“Dorothea!” You cry, grabbing the girl’s arm. “Are you okay?!”

The brunette looks exhausted, battered, and bruised, but is able to muster a smile as she addresses you. “Blair? I should be asking you that. I saw that creep spear you like a fish.” She coughs. “I almost thought I’d need to find a new roommate.”

You hug Dorothea tightly, feeling your own exhaustion and pain begin to creep in.

“Oww! Not so rough. What’s gotten into you? You’re never this touchy feely.”

You’re not sure. Perhaps it’s the near-death experience you just had, the closest you’ve been to death yet, but you feel different. Sure, you’ve been in plenty of danger these last few months, but this was the first time you were almost seriously killed. It’s almost as if something’s clicked in your head that these missions aren’t just simple school excursions. They can mean the death of you and your close friends if you aren’t careful.

>“Sorry, when I saw you get engulfed in that mist, I assumed the worst.”

Dorothea grabs your hand, reassuringly. “Well, how do you think I felt when I saw you go down earlier? I wanted to strike down Miklan right then and there. But you’re a tough cookie, Blair. I should have known it would take more than that to stop a girl like you.”

>You smile. “That’s right!”

“I’m glad you’re evidently feeling better, Blair.” Says Linhardt, who had overheard the entire conversation. “But don’t overdo it. I was only barely able to pull you from the brink of death, you know?”

>“Ahh… of course.” You sit back and wait to receive some medical attention of your own.

>You feel an intimate bond growing with Dorothea!

Miklan’s bandits have all been routed. While some managed to escape during the chaos of the Black Beast wreaking havoc, most of them were put to the sword. The cadets that were grievously injured during the fighting are being healed and escorted down the tower. In the room where Miklan was standing guard, you can see crates and barrels full of what you assume were various looted items. Weapons, food, even some precious metals and jewels, are all stacked in large quantities. It’s clear that the elder Gautier was enjoying the fruits of what his bandits were able to bring in. The task of redistributing Miklan’s loot will fall upon the Kingdom of Faergus however, and your job here is done.

The Black Eagles descend the tower and make camp at its base. By the time all is said and done, night has fallen, and the Professor decides to begin the march back to Garregh Mach the next morning. For now, you have one night before departure.

That night, you try and find Sylvain. You haven’t seen much of the boy ever since the battle had ended. After asking around a bit, you find him sitting alone at the edge of camp. He doesn’t stir as you approach, but you notice that in his hands lay the Lance of Ruin. A knot curls in your stomach upon seeing the weapon again, though you don’t expect this Gautier to stick you through with it like the last one did.

>“I was wondering where you ran off to. I expected you’d be trying to have a celebratory pass at some of the girls in camp.”

Sylvain looks up, smiling softly. “Come now, Blair. Do you really think so lowly of me?”

>You sigh. “I suppose not. You were a great asset out there. I’d say you lived up to the image of the gallant knight you claimed to be.”

“I’d disagree. You almost died out there because of something I dragged you into. I’m sorry, Blair. It appears I owe you a debt of gratitude that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to repay.”

>“There’s no need for that. I brought you along because I wanted to. I never expected any sort of payment.”

Sylvain whistles. “You’re quite the woman, Blair. I can see why Ashe is so smitten. I dare say if it weren’t him, I’d try my own luck with you.”

>You feel that revolting blush creep to your face again. “Would you cut that out?! Why must you ruin the moment?!”

Sylvain laughs, looking as if he’s already in a far better mood than how you found him. “I’m sorry, you just make it too easy.” His eyes go back to the Lance of Ruin. “It’s an ugly weapon, isn’t it? As a kid I never liked looking at the thing. I even had nightmares about it. But for Miklan, it was all he ever craved. He wasn’t always such a bastard. For a while, I even remember us having something one might call a ‘sibling bond.’ But after my Crest was discovered, all that changed. My father disinherited him, and he held a grudge against me ever since. He tried his best to make my life a living hell ever since that day. I grew to hate him. But even after all that, he was still my brother. And I regret that things had to end this way.”

You don’t know how to respond, but you decide that sitting there in silence and just being there for Sylvain is the next best thing.

“Well, sorry to downpour the mood! Like I said, I’ve never liked this lance, but seeing as how it’s in my hands now, I suppose I might as well use it. Speaking of which, I noticed you’re still using that Iron Lance of yours. I know it’s not the most romantic gift in the world, but I won’t have much need of this thing anymore. How about you take it?”

>You gained a Steel Lance+!

>You accept the lance. “Thank you. You sure know the way to a girl’s heart.”

“With that thing, you’ll cut to anyone’s heart easily enough.

Sylvain gets up from where he was sitting. “Well, I guess I’ll turn in for the night. Thanks for checking up on me, Blair. You know, I wish you were a Blue Lion. Open enrollment is coming up soon. If you ever get an itch to switch houses, I’d be happy to show you around!”

>You haven’t really thought about switching houses. You’re positive such a thing would not go over well with the Count, and you’d hate to leave your friends behind, but it’s an interesting idea to say the least. “We’ll see.”

“Don’t sound too excited! Well, good night!”

>You gain a C-Support with Sylvain!

You wander back to camp, exhausted after the day’s events, and crash heavily on your pillow. The next day, you’ll begin your march back to Garreg Mach. When you wake up that morning, you plan on:

>A): Address Martha and Xavier. Both performed admirably as part of your unit.
>B): Check in with Professor Byleth and gain some feedback on how you performed as an officer.

Blair absolutely shouldn't sneak into the tower. Miklan's goodies are stolen from the people living around the tower, and stealing them again might be convenient for Blair but is more likely to get her in trouble - and she doesn't seem the type, anyway.

You decide to check in on Martha and Xavier and see how they are doing. The two of them were instrumental in the completion of the mission, and both adequately surpassed your expectations. You figure it could be useful to see how they felt about you as their commanding officer. You find them later that morning, bickering as per usual.

“The callous disregard you show me is growing tiresome.” You hear Xavier say as you approach.

“What? All I’m saying is you looked ready to make a mess of yourself when that beast showed up!” Responds Martha.

The two continue trading jabs until you approach, both ceasing their argument to acknowledge you.

“Commander Blair! What brings you here? Looking to fraternize with us riff-raff?”

“Show some respect to your commanding officer, Martha!” Responds Xavier.

>“At ease. I just wanted to check in on the two of you. Obviously, we were in for quite a bit more than we had initially expected. How are you both doing?”

“That’s nice of you, but I’m fine.” Says Martha. “It certainly made for a more exciting story than fighting some regular old bandits would have anyway!”

Xavier nods. “I appreciate your concern, Blair. But I as well, am fine. The Goddess saw fit to preserve us all in the face of such evil. That is all I can ask for.”

>“I am glad to hear it. Please, tell me honestly. Did you find my leadership satisfactory?”

Both cadets look at each other momentarily before responding.

“Aye, I’d say so!” Says Martha, not missing a drop of her usual energy. “You were pretty cool out there, even when the pressure was on from those cavaliers. You’re a stone-cold killer!”

“You performed admirably, Blair.” Affirms Xavier. “You did your best to keep your men safe, and even threw yourself into the line of fire to do it. I’d gladly follow you again as a member of your unit.”

“Same here!” Says Martha. “Let me and Baldy tag along with you again sometime!”

“Stop calling me that!”

You smile at the confidence booster. It seems there may some hope for your budding officer career just yet.

Later that morning, the Black Eagles begin their march back to Garreg Mach. Along the way, you spend time chatting with Martha and Xavier, getting to know the two new additions to your unit. During the downtime, you can’t help but recall your conversation with Sylvain. Particularly the part about Ashe being supposedly “smitten” with you. If he wasn’t just teasing you, you admit to being somewhat flattered. The boy is certainly easy on the eyes, and you do find his chivalrous nature somewhat cut-

“Ehh, Blair?” Asks Martha. “Something wrong? Your cheeks are red. Are you growing tired walking?”

>“N-no, I’m fine. Thank you.”

You promised Dorothea you’d keep an open mind to things like that, so you won’t immediately discount it. But for the time being, it’s best to dwell on something else.

Double down on Authority for this month as it'd be more beneficial to have a B- in it for our next mission over a C- in something we can't use right now. Chance are we'll be given a more central roll with our new class and having the authority to wrangle our squad better is priority. >Chapter 6: White Clouds, Horsebow Moon, A Familiar Foe

The return to the monastery is uneventful as you and the rest of your unit go your separate ways. This month, you decide to focus on your flying and reasoning skills, with an emphasis on lessons in tactics. Given that you don’t imagine to be fired from your post as a junior officer just yet, you figure that it’s still worth attending those rather droll lectures on battles long since passed.

This month, however, will mark a special occasion for you. You’ve finally been granted the right to undergo the Pegasus Knight certification exam. Provided that you pass, you’ll be granted the right to ride a winged steed of your very own into battle. Months of taking flight classes and learning to ride the finicky creatures is about to finally pay off, and you can hardly contain the excitement.

You sit down for the written portion of the exam a few days after arriving back at the monastery. The questions are nothing that you haven’t been prepared for. The exam goes over maneuvers for avoiding archers, flight patterns, and the basics behind caring for your pegasus. You excitedly hand in the test to the Professor, who marks it with a perfect score, and scrawls another one of her signatures crudely drawn smiley faces at the corner. Having now passed the certification, you run over to the Pegasi Stables to turn in your test and complete the process.

Arriving to the grounds, you find that it’s filled with the usual crowd. Pegasus Riders from the Knights of Seiros typically congregate here, caring for their steeds and practicing coordinated aerial maneuvers. Eventually, you find who you are looking for.

Dame Serena Rosado is the commander of the Pegasus Knight battalion stationed at Garreg Mach. She is a Falcon Knight held in extremely high regard throughout Fodlan, having achieved the rank of “Seraph Knight”. When she is not preoccupied leading operations against the Western Church in their newly sparked war, she oversees the Pegasi Stables, offering mentorship to knights and cadets alike. She is also responsible for entrusting cadets who pass the certification exam with their first pegasus.

“I’m impressed, Blair. A perfect score on the certification exam is no small feat.” Serena says, inspecting your exam closely. “I’ve been watching you these last few months, and I can say I’m confident you’ll make a fine Pegasus Knight.”

>You bow your head. “Thank you, Dame Serena. I look forward to continuing my training under your guidance.”

You follow Serena into the stables, where the pegasi are kept. After passing rows of seemingly identical winged steeds, she stops at one specific pegasi.

“This pegasus is five years old and was just recently cleared for battle. His parents were both steeds that saw active battle in skirmishes against Almyran warbands. He has a gentle nature and hasn’t given any of his riders much issue. He’s never actually been on a battlefield, but nonetheless, I think he’ll be a perfect fit for you. Go on and give him a try.”

You approach the pegasus. Like all of his type, he has an immaculately spotless white coat, and his wings look impossibly soft. He doesn’t stir or bristle as you approach him, but rather looks at you curiously. The steed allows you to gently pet his head, and your heart skips a beat as you brush the fur aside. He offers no protest as you mount him and get acquainted with the feeling.

“A perfect fit!” Says Serena, smiling. “So, what will you name him?”

>“Hmm? He doesn’t have a name?”

Serena shakes her head. “It’s best for the rider to name the steed. From this day forward, your pegasus will be your most important comrade. No matter what happens, know that you can rely on him. As such, it’s up to you to give him a good, worthy name.”

You weren’t expecting to get to name your new friend! You try and think of a worthy sounding name on the spot.

for reference
Huey: Bright of mind (diminutive of Hugh)
Annand: a Scottish place-name, 'from Annan'
Achaeus: Greek for pain, but very well regarded as a classical name
Murphy: Anglicized Irish for 'sea-warrior'
Hermes: everyone knows this one, messenger of the Greek gods
Ivis: as far as I can tell, it means 'just', coming from the Latin 'iustus' (as u/v were written the same in the medieval period)

I don't mind any of them, not especially, but I feel like it's a good moment of characterization for Blair, so I'm putting forward a few suggestions. As this is Fodlan I'm sticking to Irish/Scottish, and Greek, names.

this site does list a charm stat, instead of resistance. sorry if I'm bugging you or anything. do you figure one of them has it in the wrong column?

Not bugging me at all. I'm clearly prone to making some stat mistakes. I just booted up my Switch and can confirm it is Res that gets boosted, not Charm.

Writing now, looks like we're going with Beathan. Nice job to the anon that did some more research.

>“Beathan. His name is Beathan.”

Serena smiles, giving you her seal of approval. “A fine name, Blair. Beathan is now an extension of you. He carries your will and spirit. When battle comes, the two of you shall be as one. Promise me you’ll take care of him.” She says, laying a hand on your new friend and brushing his fur.

>You nod. “I promise.”

“Excellent. I’m looking forward to watching your growth, Blair. If you ever need any further training or instruction, please do not hesitate to call upon me.”

>“Thank you, Dame Serena. It would be an honor.”

The veteran Falcon Knight smiles, taking Beathan’s reins as you hop off. “Think nothing of it. Watching you girls grow into capable and dependable Pegasus Knights has always been a pleasure of mine. I’d love to assist you in your personal development anyway that I can.”

You spend some more time in the stables, brushing and feeding Beathan, before walking back in the direction of the dorm. Along the way, you think of Serena. You’ve heard stories of her prowess in battle against enemies of the Church, but you never imagined she’d be so down-to-earth. The woman exudes an aura of exceptionalism. She’s friendly and approachable, despite the fact that she’s flown on dozens of missions and slain even more enemies. If you had a role model that you aspired to live up to in your quest to become an esteemed Pegasus Knight, Serena would probably be the closest thing. She’s much more charismatic and down to earth than-

“Head in the clouds, Rusalka? If this were a battlefield, you’d have an arrow between your eyes by now.”

You turn to your right to see Leopold, walking alongside you.

>“Fortunately, this isn’t a battlefield. It’s a monastery.”

“Tell that to the clergy members and students that lost their lives during the Western Church’s assassination attempt on the Archbishop. I’m sure they’d love to debate the subject.”

>You sigh. “Right. Well then. Did you seek me out to beat me up some more?”

“Maybe next week. I came to find you because you’re to accompany me on an upcoming mission this month.”

>Your ears perk up. “Really? We just returned to the monastery. I’ve heard no details yet of any upcoming assignment.”

“While you were fetching that Gautier boy’s little heirloom, the Knights of Seiros have been engaged in a war with our friends from the Western Church. Though calling it a war is a rather generous term. The battles have mostly been in our favor. Many of the ruling bishops on their council have already been captured, and it may not be much longer before terms are met.”

You knew that both factions have been fighting ever since the assassination attempt on Archbishop Rhea. While the Black Eagles were at Conand Tower, the Blue Lions and Golden Deer were aiding the Church in carrying out operations against their western counterpart. You had no idea though that in the span of a single month, the Western Church had already suffered grievous losses.

“There’s just one problem.” Leopold continues. “During the last month, we’ve received reports of local villages turning away our knights. From what we’ve gathered, someone’s been filling their heads with certain nonsense, riling them up. Rumors that the Archbishop has been persecuting Western clergy unfairly are abound. Nonsensical lies that she has been corrupted by a demon, and that the Western Church are martyrs have become more common. As well as the idea that the Western Church are true believers, dying for their faith in the Goddess.”

>“That sounds…familiar.”

Leopold nods. “I believe our friend from Tauros Village said some similar things. It seems that after escaping death, rather than returning home, he saw fit to continue spreading division amongst the common folk. If left uncheck, it’s possible we may have another Gaspard situation on our hands.”

It dawns on you why Leopold sought you out for this mission. You were one of the only people to see the man’s face. “So, how do we find him?”

Leopold smirks. “I knew that would excite you. He’s a crafty one. Him and his men don’t stay in one place for too long, but they seem to be sticking to villages that are close to the borders of Garreg Mach and the three nations of Fodlan. His last targets have been in in Adrestia and Faergus, so we suspect he’ll be heading towards Leicester next.”

>“So all we have is a hunch?”

Leopold nods. “Unfortunately, and as such, I don’t have many knights available to accompany us on what may very well be a wild goose chase. Especially not with the ongoing fighting. But I have been authorized to bring a unit of cadets with me on this endeavor. Hence, where you come in. We’ll be sweeping the nearby villages in the Leicester territory at the end of this month for signs of that man.”

You think back to that night. How that dark mage twisted those villagers into attacking you, and how Elizabeth and Mercedes almost died because of it. Palming your fist, you nod to Leopold.

>“I’ll be looking forward to it.”

You part ways with Leopold in front of your dorm. Entering your room, you find this month’s package from Rusalka waiting as usual. Unwrapping it, you find your usual stipend (+500g, 1560 Gold) along with a letter from the Count.

>”Blair. Continue to report back the Princess’ activity. Serve her with anything she requires.”

You sigh. He cares more about Edelgard’s ongoings than your own. At the very least, you had hoped that your writings on what you had accomplished back at Tauros Village would serve to increase your stipend. You’ll write back tomorrow. For now, you have other things on your mind. You’re confident you can rope Martha and Xavier in accompanying you on this month’s mission, but you’ll still require three additional units.

>A): Ask the Professor to assign you three non-officer Black Eagles this month.
>B): Select your own comrades from a pool of available Black Eagle cadets this month.
>C): Seek to fill your ranks with help from the Blue Lions or Golden Deer (Choose one student you have a support with, or Raphael or Ignatz.)
>D): Write-in

>>

Felix and Sylvain, if only because they both have school phase paralogues that Blair can tag along with them for at rank B which means more EXP for her, and picking one of them now means she doesn't need to use free time slots on them later.

Plus we're nearly at B with Bernadetta so...

>D): Write-in
>Felix
>Bernadetta
>Sylvain (or ask Byleth to provide the last student based on current team comp if we can't take two Blue Lions)

The Felix/Sylain/Bernie trio can support with each other so they'll have some syngery.

Picking Felix since he's the best melee fighter we have accss to with his major crest, and he will probably jump at an opportunity for a mission rather than sitting at the monstary, Bernie because we're lacking physical ranged and I want to spend more time with her.

Picking slyvain as my last thinking about his paralogue access (we can spin it as him repaying us for allowing him to accompany Blair to the tower if anyone asks), and he and Felix pretty much come as a duo anyway so they're familiar with each fighting alongside each other which is a plus.

But if we cant take two Blue lions then I'm fine with Byleth providing the last team member instead of Sylvain.

I don't really remember what chapter 6 was. Was it Flayn and the Death Knight?
Blair's staying away from any underground missions. Perhaps she's a secret relative of Constance! Well, more likely she's just not allowed to meddle (meta-le?) too much with the school phase plot.
Getting Serena lessons as well as Leopold sounds good to me.

>B): Select your own comrades from a pool of available Black Eagle cadets this month.
I'm undecided on if Blair should continue being such a close compatriot to the Blue Lions or not. But she almost has more Blue Lion friends than Black Eagles at this point. She should integrate a bit better into her own nation.

>QM specifically says you may pick one student from other houses
>anons attempt to swipe three Officer cadets in total instead of applying reading comprehension
>Felix is one of them
Of the two transgressions committed here, the last one is by far the worst.

Naturally we should apply logic here instead of forcefully attempting to spend time with Felix the Edgehog, torchbearer of the Worst Boys Club:
>D): Write-in: Ask Leopold where we'll be expected to operate, then speak with both Ignatz and Raphael. Bring the one who has any knowledge about the area the mission will take place in. If neither know the area, skip both and bring someone else.
>D): Combination A + B: Ask for a list of potential candidates we can bring and ask Byleth for input on who'd be best to bring with us.

My money is on Ignatz having at the minimum rudimentary knowledge about settlements and roads in the area, seeing as he hails from a family of merchants. Raphael however is probably a better comabt pick, but he might not know the area at all.

If neither of them know anything I'd favour taking Bernadetta with us over anyone else because we haven't interacted at all with our Spaghetti Soul Mate in fucking forever and she deserves better than that.

You mull over in your head possible candidates that may join you at the end of the month. You don’t imagine you’ll have much trouble roping in Petra or Corrine. The former has expressed that she’s always eager to help at a moment’s notice, and the latter may prove easy to convince given that she may also want revenge against the dark mage you’re hunting. Given the two girls’ preference for getting up close and personal, you’d love some more ranged support. Especially given that you’re now much more prone to suffering a fatal accident from a stray arrow catching you while mid-flight. You have the perfect candidate in mind, but you’re positive you’ll need to grease her wheels a bit.

You’re called in for an officer meeting later the next day. While the Black Eagles do not officially have a mission this month, you’re told some disturbing news. Flayn, the sister of Seneschal Seteth has recently gone missing. What’s worse, there are troubling rumors abound at the monastery that the culprit may be some mysterious entity known only as the Death Knight. You have never really interacted with Flayn before, but you know her as a bright and cheery girl with a near perpetual smile plastered on her face. If one were to have kidnapped her, you have no doubt that it would be someone as fiendish as this supposed “Death Knight.”

As class ends for the week, you seek to find Petra and Corrine to let them know your intentions.

“This man tried to kill the Blair?” Asks Petra.

>You nod, gravely. “He did indeed.”

Petra gives you a nod of determination and claps her hands. “Then I shall join you in the hunt. He shall be found, and he shall be bought justice!”

>“Uhh, brought justice. Thank you, Petra. I knew I could count on you.” You clasp the girl’s hands meaningfully, and head to your next target.

>You feel a stronger bond growing with Petra!

“That dark mage from Tauros Village? You’d think he would have gotten the hint the first time he escaped with his life.” Muses Corrine.

“Evidently not. Can I count on you to help me make it a little clearer for him?”

Corrine giggles. “Vengeance is a cute look on you, Blair. Of course, I’ll come. Someone has to keep you alive, after all.”

>You feel a stronger bond growing with Corrine!

That leaves your final, and most difficult challenge ahead. Before going to your last destination, you stop at the marketplace, and purchase a small, undisclosed item. (-10g). You then head for the Black Eagle dorms, stopping at a familiar door. Taking a breath to mentally prepare yourself, you knock.

“The Death Knight! He’s come for me! Noooo!”

>“Bernie, it’s me, Blair. Can you let me in?”

The door suddenly swings open, and you feel yourself pulled inside forcefully.

“What are you doing walking around alone, Blair?! Didn’t you hear, the Death Knight is going around kidnapping girls! What if he had caught you?!”

>“Bernie, it’s noon. I seriously doubt the Death Knight would be out in broad daylight.”

“You don’t know that!”

>You sigh. “I brought you something.” You hand the small box you purchased over to Bernadetta. She opens it suspiciously, only to find that inside is…

“A stuffed turtle?!”

>You smile and nod. “I thought you might like it. I know you’re a fan of stuffed animals.”

Bernadetta hugs the animal close to her chest, tears welling in her eyes. “T-thank you, Blair! You’re too nice to me. First you kept those scary bandits off my tail at Conand Tower, and now you’re giving me gifts. I don’t deserve you!”
>“It’s what friends are for! Actually, I have something I could use a bit of help with myself…”

You explain the situation to Bernadetta, who looks initially horrified at the prospect of having to go out this month but warms up to the idea.

“I was really looking forward to staying in this month…but if there’s a Death Knight wandering around, maybe I’ll be safer out there. And you said we may not even find this dark mage, right? C-count me in…”

>“Thanks Bernie, you’re the best!” You hug the girl tightly, before exiting her dorm room.

>You gain a B-Support with Bernadetta!

As you leave the dorm room, having completed your own personal mission, you try and decide how to spend the rest of your free time today.

Leopold has already mentioned that he would be expecting you for further training. Seeing as how you’ll be traveling with him at the end of the month, it’s best to not keep him waiting. You head out in the direction of the Knight’s Ground, already grimacing at what you’re sure will be another painful lesson.

As you arrive, you spot Leopold, barking drills at the junior church soldiers under his command. Some of them are exercising, doing things like jumping jacks or push-ups in variation, while others are running laps around the field. Some of the knights are even doing strength training, lifting vast, heavy weights above their head, only to drop them to the floor with a loud grunt. When you approach, he turns his attention towards you and yells. “Rusalka! What are you doing just standing there? Get in line!”

>“Yes sir!”

For the next two hours, you’re subjected to the same torturous cycle that the soldiers you saw earlier were. You’re forced to complete multiple sets of push-ups, before going for a lap five times around the Knight’s Ground. Finally, Leopold makes you lift some of the weights you saw earlier. Your arms feel like they’re about to explode, and it is only with the assistance of a nearby kind knight named Alois that you don’t drop the weight on your foot right there. After finishing your workout, Leopold bids you to get into the ring with him.

>You approach the veteran knight, sweaty, exhausted and beyond sore. “Surely you don’t intend for us to spar after all of that?”

“Why wouldn’t I? I don’t know what sort of conditioning that Professor Eisner has you doing, but it’s clearly lacking. Now, pick up your lance.”

With a groan, you grab your training spear, and face off against Leopold, who stands across from you on the other side. A nearby knight gives the two of you the go ahead to begin. You study Leopold and his stance for a brief moment before charging in. If you’re going to get your ass kicked, you might as well hurry up and get it over with.

Despite the evident fatigue in your arms, your jabs feel like they’re coming out much faster than they were even just a month ago. Leopold stays on the defensive to start with, blocking each jab with his shield, until you finally manage to catch him on the side. The knight seems surprised and backs off, batting your spear away with his sword.

“Impressive. It seems like you gained quite a fair bit of experience during your trip to the Tower of Black Winds.” Muses Leopold. “Perhaps there may be some hope for you yet.”

>“Nice…of you…to say!” You waste no time bantering with the man as you close the distance, trying to keep up the pressure and knock him down. Unfortunately, the paladin seems to begin taking you just a fraction of a bit more seriously. He closes the gap you created with your spear, shifting it aside with his shield before thrusting his sword into your stomach. Once you hit the ground, you find getting up to be impossible.

Leopold sighs. “We’ll have to work on your endurance. Let’s call it there. I’m sure we’ll have plenty of more time to practice in Leicester this month.”

>You groan.

“Oh, cheer up. You’re getting much better. Despite your sorry state, you kept your cool and your attacks were much more efficient than last month. Clearly my instruction is bearing fruit.”

You doubt it, but at the very least, you can’t deny that you feel some sort of payoff.

Gathering yourself up, you head back to your dorm room, immediately crashing on the floor the second you walk in, much to Dorothea’s shock.

Another week passes, and there’s still no sign of Flayn. Cadets from all three houses have investigated the monastery and the adjacent town, but she’s still nowhere to be found. Six months into the school year and this already seems far and away from anything you expected when you were initially enrolled. Well, what can you do?

You haven’t spoken with Ashe in a while, and you never got to thank him for sharing “The Life and Conflicts of Dame Alma”. Reading was never a big hobby of yours, but you found the book to be both enjoyable and inspirational. You find Ashe at the Fishing Grounds, staring out at the water before him. As you approach, the boy greets you with a bright smile.

“Blair! It’s good to see you again! Sylvain told me how you came through for him big-time during last month’s mission.” He says, cheerfully.

>You shake your head. “It was nothing, really. I had the opportunity to help someone in need, so I did.”

“That’s just like you, going out of your way for others. You’ll make a fine knight one day, I know it.”

You reach into your satchel and hand Ashe the book. “Speaking of which, thank you for sharing this with me. I had never heard of Alma before. She sounds like she was quite the hero.”

“I’m glad you liked it! Her confrontation against that Almyran Warlord is known as one of the most epic aerial battles in history! I’d be happy to recommend some other books as well if you’re ever interested.” Ashe says. From the twinkle in his eyes, you can easily tell he’s passionate about reading.

>“I’d like that. I did have a question for you, though.”

“Hmm? What is it?”

>“When you first gave me that book, you said I remind you of Alma. Why is that?”

“H-huh?”

“Other than our mutual riding of pegasi, it’s not like we have all that much in common. She was a war hero, beloved by her soldiers and the Empire’s citizenry. A tactical genius and the greatest aerial combatant of her generation. Not to mention, the book goes into excessive detail on her beauty. I have to admit…I fail to see the similarities.”

The two of you sit there in silence for a few brief moments, before Ashe finally pipes up.

“W-well…I see all of those things in you, Blair. Or at least the potential for it. Alma wasn’t born a war hero. She was just an ordinary girl, living in a remote village. Through hard work, she became all those things you mentioned. And after having spent some time with you, I can see you becoming just like her. Your selflessness, the way you’re ready to risk your life to help people you hardly even know. I think you’re well on your way to having your own book written about you.”

>“And am I to expect to become a great beauty someday as well?” You tease.

Ashe looks flustered, and you can see a hint of color emerging. “Well…I don’t think that part will be very hard.”

You suppress a laugh, though you’re unsure whether it’s because you find the situation humorous, or your nerves are acting up. You look at the boy and smile. “Thank you, Ashe. With you believing in me, I have no choice but to try and live up to your expectations.”

Ashe nods and gives you a show of support. “When someone writes ‘The Life and Conflicts of Blair d’Rusalka’, I promise I’ll be its first reader!”

>“I’d be happy to sign that for you!”

You spend the rest of the day catching up with Ashe, filling him on how you recently passed the Pegasus Knight certification and about your mission.

>You feel a stronger bond growing with Ashe!

You still have some time to kill before the day is over. What will you do?

After Ashe takes his leave, you decide to stick around the grounds for a little while longer and go fishing. It’s a hobby that you haven’t been able to partake in for a while, and you figure you might as well give it a shot since you’re here. Fortunately, fishing in the nearby lake is free to cadets, so you’re easily able to acquire a sturdy pole and find yourself a nice cozy spot by the boardwalk to cast your line. As you wait for potential critters to bite, the cool sea breeze blowing through your hair and feeling nice against your face, your mind drifts off. The last time you went fishing happened to be one of the last times you had seen your father alive.

You were only 12 years old at the time. Your father was a common soldier in Rusalka’s standing army, who had recently been informed he would be called to service to serve in the Count’s army. The Dagda and Brigid War was just getting started, and all able-bodied men would soon be off to join in on the fighting.

>“The fish aren’t really biting today.” You complain.

“Well, if you aren’t having any luck catching anything, I surely won’t fair much better.” Your father responds. Marron Weaver was not a particularly outstanding or noteworthy man. He never excelled in one area or skill. Often, he would make ends meet by taking on odd jobs in the village, such as construction work, foraging or the occasional stint of guard duty. However, he was never a terrible father. You never knew your mother. From what he told you, she’d passed during child labor. Marron always treated you well despite struggling to get by, and you’re keenly aware that many fathers would not have fared nearly as well as he did, given a similar situation.

>“Tomorrow is the day, right? How long do you think you’ll be gone?” You ask.

“Who knows?” Marron responds, reeling in his empty line. “I hear things are getting bad, but at the end of the day, it’s just a bunch of savages from some backwater nations going up against the full-might of the Empire. I’m sure I’ll be back before too long.”

>“Do you promise?”

Marron laughs. “What, you think I’d just go ahead and leave you all alone? After all this time?”

>“Promise?!”

Marron grimaces, rubbing his head, before solemnly nodding. “Aye, I promise, Blair. It won’t be too long. Now you be a good girl while I’m gone, alright? The elder was nice enough to look after you, so I don’t want you causing any trouble.”

You nod.

“Let’s pack it in, kid. We’ve been out here for hours without a single bite. I don’t think today’s our lucky day.”

>You shake your head, refusing to budge. “Just a little longer. Please?”

Marron remains quiet for a few minutes, before answering. “Aye, fine. Just a little longer.”

The next day, you saw him march out, along with some other men from the village, under the command of a local sergeant. With his helmet and uniform on, you could barely tell him apart from the others in his group. But you watched him depart the village, staring out at him until the group was no longer in eyesight.

A few months later, the Count’s men came to collect you, and broke the news.

You stare out at the calm water in front of you. Much like that day all those years ago, the fish don’t appear to be biting here either. You pack your fishing pole and leave. On your way back to the dorm, you spot cadets and knights running around in a frenzy. You manage to stop one such cadet and question her on what’s going on.

“The Black Eagles! A handful of them managed to find Flayn, along with another missing student!” The excited boy stammers out. “There was some sort of fight underground, and the Death Knight was there!”

>Death Knight? So, he wasn’t some made-up nightmare after all. “Is everyone alright?”

The boy nods proudly. “No casualties on our end. That Professor Byleth sure is something, huh?!” He then runs off, joining some other cadets to secure the area.

It looks like you missed a big fight. Oh well. If the Death Knight was real, better to leave such a frightening foe to crest-bearers like Lady Edelgard and the Professor, with her Sword of the Creator. You head back to your dorm, avoiding all the commotion. That night, Dorothea fills you in on what you missed.

The rest of the week is abuzz with excitement. The Black Eagles have met with a lot of success this year but finding Flayn seems to have surpassed all their prior triumphs. There’s even been a load of speculation that they’ll be the favorites to win the Battle of the Eagle and Lion next month. It’s hard not to get wrapped up in all the commotion, but for now, you still have a job to do. You have one final day of free time before you accompany Sir Leopold to Leicester.

You decide to spend your last day of free time at the Pegasus Stable. You figure it’s important to spend time with Beathan now that you’ll be riding him into battle. It’s also an opportunity to have a bit of training with an esteemed Falcon Knight like Serena. You venture forth.

Beathan is in the same stable where you left him. The creature does not stir too much upon your arrival, though this does not really surprise you, as you’ve only just met him. While the Stable’s attendants typically ensure that the pegasus’ daily needs are met, you decide to take that on yourself today in an effort to endear yourself to the animal. This includes his daily brushing and washing, providing him his daily feed (along with a small sugar cube incentive), as well as taking him out for a fly.

While you’ve been training with pegasi all year, you’re still surprised at just how agile and light Beathan feels to ride. The rough and tumble sensation one normally encounters when riding a horse is non-existent on a pegasus, and you feel as if you’re almost gliding in the air. Which is a good thing, because you’ll need as much maneuverability as you can get to avoid being skewered by an arrow and falling to your death.

“You look like a natural out there, Blair. As if you’ve been flying your entire life.” You hear Serena say as you land. Evidentially the veteran knight was watching you practice, something that embarrasses you.

>“Thank you, Dame Serena. Please, if there is anything you can teach me, I would be most grateful.”

Serena studies you for a moment. “You’ll be travelling with Leopold on a mission this month, right?”

>You’re surprised. “Correct. I had no idea that you knew.”

“Beyond the two of us both being Senior Knights, Leopold and I are good friends. He had told me that I could expect a ‘brash and reckless’ cadet that he had been working with to stop by at some point. Though I fail to see what he could have meant…”

>“Uhh, yes, Sir Leopold and I have been training together!” You stammer out, eager to change the subject.

Serena laughs. “Don’t worry, I’m well-aware of what Leopold can be like. If he’s taken an interest in you though, that must mean he sees something special.”

>“He’s certainly never mentioned that.”

“Well, he can certainly be a bit brash himself, but he means well. A word of advice then. As a Pegasus Knight, you’ll find that on the battlefield, there are certain things that only you can do. Being able to overlook the entire stage, the ability to soar over the enemies’ lines, taking out key targets or personnel, or even the ability to rescue a comrade that’s in danger. You’re an invaluable asset out there, but you must not let it get to your head. Just because you see that you can take out the enemy commander in one fell swoop, does not necessarily mean you should if you’ll find yourself surrounded. Trust your instincts, and Beathan here, and you’ll come back in one piece.”

>You bow. “Thank you, Dame Serena. I look forward to seeing you next month.”

“I as well. Watch after Sir Leopold for me.” She teases.

>30xp gained! (50/100)

You look at your Iron Lance sadly. The weapon has undoubtedly served you well this year and has claimed more lives than you care to count. The weapon Sylvain gave you is of a far superior quality though, and you need to earn the extra money somehow. Bidding the weapon farewell, you turn it in to a local blacksmith, who gives you 200g in exchange. (1750g total).

The next day, you arrive bright and early at the gates of Garreg Mach to greet your team. Xavier and Martha are the first to arrive after you, the two already embroiled in one of their seemingly endless arguments.

“All I’m saying is, if I had been down there, I’d have roasted that Death Knight before he had a chance to get away!” Exclaims Martha.

“You’d have done no such thing.” Retorts Xavier. “That beast is a creature of pure evil. Best that he returns back to whatever foul corner of hell he emerged from.”

>“You two are…certainly lively this morning.”

“I’m just excited to get back out there and fight some bad guys!” Says Martha.

“While I don’t necessarily agree with the enthusiasm of my comrade here, I look forward to working with you again, Blair.” Says Xavier.

>“Likewise. You two were an invaluable asset back at Conand Tower. I’m glad I can depend on you both.”

“Reporting for duty, Commander Blair!” You hear a familiar voice call out. “You can depend on me too, just say the word, I’ll do anything you need.”

>“Hello, Corrine… I see you’re as serious as always today.”

“I just can’t help myself! I’m excited for you to lead me into battle. Oh, I can just picture how cute you’d look now, barking orders and such.”

“This…lady… is joining us?” Asks Xavier.

“Is there a problem?” Corrine asks, turning her attention to the white mage.

“I understand you and your usual squad have a reputation of being…excessive on the battlefield.”

“What’s wrong with that? You’re not my enemy. It’s not like I’ll be cutting that bald head of yours off, is it?”

An awkward silence follows, penetrated only by the stifled giggling of Martha, and the arrival of Bernadetta and Petra.

“Blair! Greatest of mornings to you!” Says Petra.

“Hey…now that the Death Knight is gone, do I still need to come?” Asks Bernadetta.

>“You’d be doing us a great service, Bernie. Your aim will be invaluable, and I’ll make sure to protect you, same as always.”

The mousey girl sighs. “Well, I suppose I did promise…and you got me that turtle.” She trails off.

Leopold is the last to arrive. At his side is a face you certainly weren’t expecting to see. The priestess from Tauros Village, Elizabeth, joins your group.

>“Priestess! This is a surprise. What are you doing here?” You spot the shine of Xavier’s head as he bows in reverence to the priestess of Seiros.

“I’m happy to see you again Blair, and you too, Corrine.” Elizabeth says. “I understand that we seek the man responsible for the corruption of my home. If that is the case, I want to be there when he is brought to justice.”

>“I’m certainly happy to see you as well, but know that if we find the man, battle is most likely to spark. Are you sure about this?”

Elizabeth nods and smiles. “I’ve been keeping busy ever since coming to the monastery. I’m not as frail as I was a few months ago. This time, it’s my turn to protect the two of you.” She gives you a determined look and flexes her bicep.

Leopold scans the crowd in front of him, not giving away much emotion, before turning to you. “You sure know how to pick them, kid. Though would it have killed you to maybe select a few more men? Don’t you know large groups of women tend to be overly chatty?”

>“I’ve fought with everyone here before. I’m confident in their abilities and would trust them all with my life.” From behind you, Corrine gives off an overexaggerated gasp.

“Surely.” Snorts Leopold. “Well, if we’re all here, we depart immediately. Our first stop will be Carcino Village, at the border of Leicester.”

You and Leopold stare at each other for a few brief moments.

“Well?” He asks.

>”O-oh, right. Cadets! Move out!”

Carcino is one of three Leicester villages that border the Garreg Mach territory. Leicester’s territory tends to be more temperate and sunnier than the cold weather of Faergus you were exposed to last month, and your group makes good pace, cutting the expected travel time in half. As you’re setting up camp, you notice that your comrades have broken off into groups and are chatting amongst themselves. Who will you join?

A): Leopold and Elizabeth seem to be discussing something serious.
B): Corrine, Martha and Xavier are having a spirited conversation.
C): Petra seems to be soothing over Bernadetta’s worries.
