>“You know what to do. Do it or suffer.”

“I… argh, fine. I’m dropping back now,” you idly note that Kuta’s normal deadpan does a pretty good job this time around of replacing Erika.

You wait a couple of minutes to allow for dropping back time as the script demands. Kuta restarts the conversation again a couple of seconds later.

“We’re in position,” she says, monotone as ever.

“Then do it,” you order. There’s another moment of silence before Kuta talks again.

“Imagine you hear a massive crash and respond to it.”

“What was that?” Ruby cries in response. You peer out the back of your cupola as if looking for the cause of the crash before returning to the radio.

“Report in!”

“They ducked us,” Kuta ‘groans’. “We lost control and hit the wall, I think we’re out of this one. Guess I’m not coming second, huh?”

“Useless,” you mutter as you tear the headset off. “It shouldn’t be difficult to cause a crash.”

Axel subtly taps your leg a moment later to let you know that the scene has ended. You take that opportunity to crack open your hatch and let some air in as you put your headset back on.

“Kuta, how was it?”

“Acceptable,” she replies. “Continue manouvering, some of the other groups are still filming and require the background noise.”

“Sure thing,” you reply. There’s no need to pass on the order since Max was listening in too, so you just enjoy the relief from the heat of the tank as the other teams wrap up their filming. You see Anzu sticking out of her tank eating sweet potato chips and she gives you a lazy wave once she notices you watching her.

You return it, and after another ten minutes driving in large circles, Eiga is satisfied and lets everyone begin making their way back to the warehouse.

You head to lessons after the tanks are put away. Ruby has to be dragged away from the L/100 by all four of you which sits proudly next to Werewolf. Lessons go quickly, with reminders about exams, elections and the half-term all coming up soon. You also remember the match you’ve been signed up for to pay for the film which all adds up to make next week a busy one.

>Find History Club, follow up leads. The usual.

At lunch, you head for the classroom that the History Club usually uses as a gathering place, all four of them are there, and they’re pouring over the photocopies you gathered from the docks.

“No one questioned what you were all doing with stacks of paper?” You ask as you take a seat at the table they’re all sitting around.

“People stopped questioning what we do halfway through second year,” Caesar snorts. “We could be doing opera in the hallway and they wouldn’t bat an eye.”

“Interesting,” you say eventually. “So, what do we have?”

“Well, the company, Nagayama shipping is defunct by now. Thankfully, Kochi has digitized most of their old records, so we don’t have to go digging again,” Erwin begins. “The company was set up by one Hisako Nagayama who’s brother went on to found the Nagayama corporation which is one of the biggest companies in Japan today.”

“But it gets better,” Oryou grins. “Hisako Nagayama was married to one Tomoyuki Yamashita who was the Military Governor of Japan to the Philippines at the end of the Second World War.”

You immediately see where they’re going. “And the schoolship made a lot of trips to the Philippines, didn’t it?”

“A lot. More than the next sixty years combined,” Saemonza adds.

>“Are you telling me this is war crime gold?”
>“So one of the largest companies in Japan was funded by dirty money.”
>“I guess we’re not going to find a massive pallet of gold then.”

>“Are you telling me this is war crime gold?”

“Well, I couldn’t tell you for certain that this ridiculous amount of gold was all stolen, but yeah. It probably was. Especially since Yamashita was executed for war crimes after the war.,” Caesar says.

“There goes any chance of us keeping it,” Erwin sighs dramatically. “Here I was planning to retire at seventeen and live the rest of my life in luxury.”

“Well I mean it’s not like the government’s going to give it back to the Philippines anytime this decade,” Oryou shrugs. “If it still exists that is.”

You let the two of them descend into politics and turn your attention back to Caesar.

>“So one of the largest companies in Japan was funded by dirty money.”

“So it seems,” she nods. “The question is what do we do with that information? We’re going to keep digging anyway since we want to see if there’s anymore to it, but aside from that, we might’ve hit the end of the road.”

“We could sink the Nagayama corporation,” Saemonza suggests. The four of you look at her and she just shrugs. “What? We write up and publish our findings, the world notices and investigates, Nagayama gets fined into oblivion and justice is done.”

“That’s slightly optimistic, don’t you think?” Erwin asks.

“Maybe,” Saemonza shrugs again. “But it’s better than doing nothing because we can’t find any treasure.”

“Let’s just keep investigating,” Caesar interrupts. “More evidence if it exists can’t hurt our case. It’s been seventy years so a couple more weeks won’t hurt anyone.”

You can tell that all of them want to move on from investigating, but none challenge Caesar’s decision on the matter.

“Hopefully we find something in Nagayama shipping’s old records. An address or something,” Caesar says, returning her attention to you. “Who knew this ship had such history buried away in it?”

Anzu’s the politician so she should have more of an interesting idea on what to do with this information. Also I don’t care if the golds war crime gold, I don’t see why we shouldn’t keep it or why should even snitch on the company who looted it in first place

After lessons, you head for the warehouse where more filming is being done. You don’t have any lines, so you just help contribute to the background noise of tank engines and maneuvering. You also get access to a couple stretches of road for a short while, so the film club takes advantage of that to get some action shots of the lot of you going around the track. Your crew also has no problems with that as it means that none of them are required apart from you to stick out the top of the tank and Max to drive it.

You spend a solid hour just going round in circles, changing positions and speed as Eiga dictates. You don’t do any position changing given you’re effectively the final boss, but the rest of the club does.

>Update Anzu on your investigation.

As practice ends, you make your way over to the student council.

“Girls,” you greet them as you arrive and accept a hug from Yuzu. “I have some information you might be interested in.”

“Great, let’s walk and talk,” Anzu says, gesturing towards the door. The three of them talk a moment to retrieve their bags then you set out with them back towards their office.

“Let me guess, it’s the gold?” Yuzu asks as the four of you walk.

“Yep, it’s the gold,” you confirm. “It was picked up by a company called Nagayama shipping after it was brought here from the Philippines.”

“And then what, it disappeared?” Anzu asks. “Any relation to the Nagayama company?”

“We don’t know, and there seems to be,” you reply.

“Hmm,” Anzu considers that for a moment. “Have you considered blackmail?”

“Prez, no!” Yuzu groans immediately. “Don’t jump to things like that!”

“What? We’re not going to find any physical gold. At least this way we get something out of it.”

>“I doubt we could do much damage with this information, although this company might be interested in paying us to keep this secret.”

“That’s the spirit!” Anzu cheers. “Big companies hate stuff like this. Enrollment at Ooarai is set to increase next year so maybe we can use it as an opportunity to get another tank or two out of them to keep it quiet.”

“Now there’s two of them,” Yuzu sighs, getting a pat on the back from Momo.

“What are you whining for? Fritz is thinking pragmatically, that’s to be commended!” Anzu argues back as you head up the stairs past the bridge and towards the student council office.

The discussion is paused as you reach the office. Yuzu fishes around for a key in her handbag for a moment then opens the door. When you enter, Momo and Anzu head for the sofas in the corner while Yuzu heads for her desk. You hear her open a fridge and pull out several cans before heading back to where the three of you are sitting.

She puts them down on the table in front of you. Most of the cans are quickly snatched up, but you take a can of iced coffee.

“Fritz,” Momo begins, getting your attention. “If you want my opinion, you should find all you can, compile your evidence and send it to a historical journal. You’re a historian, right? This would be a great start to a career in applied history. Ooarai isn’t going under anymore, so there’s no need for blackmail.”

>“We’re not really done yet, but we’ll see when we’ve exhausted our leads.”

“I suppose that’s the best course of action right now,” Momo nods. “Just keep it in mind.”

“I will,” you promise.

“Enough of that,” Yuzu declares with a clap. “We’re off duty now! No paperwork, no meetings, no tanks!”

“I like tanks though,” you protest.

“Too bad,” Yuzu says. “No talking about them!”

“Fine,” you sigh as you sip your iced coffee. “So exams, how do you guys feel about those?”

“I thought we said no work,” Momo says immediately.

“What, got something to hid, Kawashima?” Anzu asks.

“Wha- no!” Momo splutters angrily. “I have nothing to hide! I’ve been preparing for exams as hard as anyone else!”

“The lady doth protest too much, methinks,” you add immediately jumping on the opening you’ve been given. She shifts her glare to you and you just smile back at her, sipping from your iced coffee.

“I’m going to get the highest marks in the year. Just you watch!” She declares.

“I won’t be holding my breath,” Yuzu mock whispers.

The four of you continue late into the night with you and Yuzu eventually retiring back to your apartment.

Friday 13th October (Day 179)

That morning, the two of you get up and get ready. You’re mildly surprised to find out that Yuzu has taken over part of your closet and you never noticed when she pulls out a fresh set of school clothes.

When you enter the warehouse, you’re immediately accosted by Eiga.

“Hey! Hermann! Good to see you, can we talk?” She asks. She doesn’t give you an opportunity to answer instead walking you over to the theatre.

“So, one of the Angler-girls suggested a tank fight to cap off the movie, and we thought that was a great idea. I’ve got the girls choreographing it now. The plan is for it to end up with you guys out maneuvered and in the river. Don’t worry though, I’ve already talked to the automotive club about it and they said it can be repaired.”

>“Well, I don’t know how you’re going to make it look like Werewolf’s going in the water, but good luck.”

>“Well, I don’t know how you’re going to make it look like Werewolf’s going in the water, but good luck.”

“I think you misheard me,” Eiga replies. “I said-”

“No, I heard you just fine,” you reply with a smile. “I said that I don’t know how you’re going to make it look like Werewolf’s going in the water, but good luck.”

“What you’re not going to-”

“I don’t know how you’re going to make it look like Werewolf’s going in the water, but good luck,” you repeat for the third time. That seems to get the message across as Eiga realises you’re not going to be taking Werewolf for a swim.

“Aside from that minor issue,” you continue, “a fight to cap it off sounds like a great idea to me. Let me know once it’s been scripted properly.”

With that you turn and leave the theatre. You idly wonder if you’ve been a little hard on her but then you remember she suggested sinking Werewolf and decide you haven’t been.

When you reach your crew and let them know about Eiga’s idea for the fight, they share your enthusiasm for the fight itself as well as your distaste at the idea of sinking Werewolf. The tank himself is similarly hesitant to be submerged for no good reason.

“Say, Fritz,” Ruby pipes up afterwards. “How about Frederick?”

“What about him?” You ask.

“Well, he’s a first production run, right?” She asks. “Weren’t they built with the river forging system?”

A quick inspection confirms that Frederick does in fact have the system fitted. While you don’t have the snorkels required, they aren’t hard to either make or find.

>Don’t tell Eiga, she has no right to tell you sink your tanks like she did.

“It’s a good idea, Ruby but I don’t think we’ll tell her,” you decide.

“Really? Why not?”

“She doesn’t have any right to tell us to sink our tank like that,” you reply. “Perhaps if she’d asked nicely instead of ordering us or came to us for advice on how best to film it, we could go through the trouble of going for a swim in Frederick, but it grind my gears how she went about it.”

“I suppose,” she murmurs back. “Imagine the hours of maintenance if Werewolf went under. Pumping out the oil and fuel tanks, redoing all the lube, getting the water out and drying everything off inside.”

“Mhm, and I don’t fancy doing that anymore than I have to,” you finish. Ruby seems satisfied with that explaination so leaves it there. Eiga’s probably smart enough to figure something else out anyway.

>Talk to Hoshino about the gun.

At lunch, you head back to the warehouse to find the automotive club. They’re exactly where you expected them to be, in the engineering corner. They have their car suspended from the Engineering tank’s crane with the four of them inspecting the bottom.

“Is that safe?” You ask, eyeing the crane warily.

“Crane’s rated for more than double the car’s weight,” Nakajima replies. “It’ll hold.”

“And if it fails?”

“Then we die,” Hoshino shrugs. “Simple as.”

You’re taken back momentarily at how blasé she is before deciding to just ignore it and press on.

“I’m here about the gun we recently got for Werewolf.”

“The long one?” Suzuki asks. You nod an affirmative. “Me and the girls gave it a once over, you’ll be slinging shells pretty hard with that thing.”

“That’s the plan,” you reply. “Once the movie’s done, how long do you think it’d take to fit?”

“Well, this week’s busy,” Hoshino hums. “We can’t change it till the movie stops filming on Sunday, and we won’t really be able to get any work done over the days of the movie festival or exams afterwards. Is there anything on Friday?”

“The open day,” Tsuchiya adds. “On Friday.”

“And the match begins Saturday afternoon,” you mutter.

The girls share a look between themselves before Hoshino turns back to you.

“Look, thanks to the engineering block and tank, we could probably fit it over Friday night, but would Saturday morning be long enough to get used to it? Otherwise, we could leave it for afterwards?”

>Do it on Friday. A morning should be enough for Ruby to get used to it.

>Do it on Friday. A morning should be enough for Ruby to get used to it.

“Friday, if you could,” you reply immediately.

“Are you sure about that?” Suzuki asks. “It’ll be a lot to ask from Ruby, and you.”

“We can do it,” you reply confidently.

“Well, you know better than us on that, so we’ll take your word for it,” Nakajima says. “Friday evening we’ll get that gun put in.”

“Great, thanks girls, I owe you one,” you reply. Nakajima immediately waves you off.

“No way, Fritz, you’ve had our back all year. This is like, making it even at best.”

Lunch finishes shortly afterwards, and you head for lessons. They’re more revision sessions than actual learning at this point given the short time left till exams. You and the rest of your crew are forced to use the time productively since you’re skipping a year. Thankfully, between the five of you and the Student Council, you’re able to get enough work done that you’re not worried for your grades.

That evening, you head for the warehouse as usual. There’s no filming planned for today, so the time is instead being used to plan the end of the movie and give the more technical side of the club a chance to do some special effects and editing.

You’re once again whisked away to the film club’s headquarters in the theatre where Eiga starts to pitch her new plan to you. Miho is also present at the table which has a map of Ooarai on it.

“So, Fritz. What’s going to happen is that as Anglerfish beats you and wins the race, you open fire on them. This’ll begin a cat and mouse chase through the city till you reach the river. At that point Anglerfish team, out of ammo, will ram you and send you into the river! Don’t worry though, we’ll cut there then continue in the water, so your tank doesn’t get wet!”

>“Guess I best brush up on my swimming then.”
>“Sure, sounds good to me.”
>“You should’ve led your pitch earlier with this.”
>Write-in any suggestion to the contrary.

>“Guess I best brush up on my swimming then.”

“Well, we’ll have divers on hand from the scuba club just in case, but yes! Make sure you can swim so you can deliver your lines from the water!”

“We have a scuba club?” You ask. You share a look with Miho who just shrugs, apparently, she didn’t know either.

“We have lots of small and niche clubs,” Eiga tuts. “The film club for example – you didn’t know we existed!”

“The second-best funded club, small and niche?” Miho asks, eyebrow raised.

“Well, small funding wise,” Eiga backtracks slightly. “I suppose we aren’t really niche since we have the most people – but that’s beside the point!”

You share another look with Miho then decide to just roll with it.

“Sure, whatever you say, Eiga,” you reply. You spend the rest of evening practice going over the plan for filming on the weekend.

>Let your crew know of the arrangements for the new gun.

That evening when you reach your shared apartment building, the rest of your crew is prepping to go out. Max and Leo with Saori, Ruby with Hana, and Axel god knows where. You stop all of them before they can get out the door.

“What’s the hold up?” Ruby complains, trying and failing to shove you out of the way.

“The hold up,” you reply, “is an L/100. Care to know more or are you in too much of a rush.”

That does the trick and suddenly all four of them are willing to wait a few minutes longer.

“Spill,” your gunner demands.

“We can’t get to work until the movie is filmed and the automotive club is busy for most of the week,” you begin. “That means that the earliest that the gun will be done is over Friday night.”

You see the gears whirring in your gunner’s head.

“That means that we’ll only have Saturday morning to practice,” she deduces.

“Yep, I’m letting you know now so you can make the most of that morning,” you say. “If you need anything from me or the others, let us know.”

“Sure!”

The rest of your crew also signals their approval before you let them get on their way. That leaves the rest of the evening free.

>You've not done anything with Rabbit team in a while.

You decide to send a text to Azusa asking what Rabbit team is doing. Not thirty seconds later, they let you know that they’re going into town and you’re invited to come. You agree to meet them at the gangway in about twenty minutes.

After changing into casual clothes, you head to the gangway. When you arrive, you see all six of the rabbits waiting for you.

“Hi Commander!” Azusa shouts as she waves to you. You wave back and continue making your way over to the group of first years.

“Hello girls,” you greet them as you arrive. You’re quickly swarmed by all six of them excitedly trying to explain what they’re planning to do. Unfortunately, since they’re all talking at the same time, you can’t understand any of them. You hold up a hand to stop them, then pick one at random.

“Karina,” you go first.

“Right! It’s a good thing you’re coming as we’re stuck in a three-way tie on where we want to go!”

“I see,” you say as you slowly begin walking, leading them down the gangway. “Who wants to do what?”

“Well, a new indoor shooting range opened up! Me and Yuuki want to go there! Aya and Ayumi want to go Karaoke, and Azusa and Saki want to go get bubble tea!”

“Saki does, does she?” You ask looking back at the girl. As always, her head is in the clouds.

>Indoor shooting range

“The shooting range sounds fun,” you say as you approach the bus stop.

“Hurray! I knew you’d pick the cool thing!” Karina cheers.

“Maybe if I post pictures of me doing it, I’ll be able to get a boyfriend!” Yuuki gushes. Aya and Ayumi don’t seem too fussed about it, and Saki is Saki, but Azusa is sporting a mighty frown.”

“You alright there?” You ask as you board the bus.

“Yeah… I’ve never shot a gun before,” she replies.

“You haven’t? Do you not have a pintle gin?”

She shakes her head.

“Have you fired your tank’s gun?”

“Not personally.”

“Well, trust me on this, firing a gun personally is a lot different to just experiencing it.”

“We’ll see,” she says sceptically.

You soon reach the high street and the seven of you hop off the bus. A short walk later and you’re in front of the shooting range.

You walk in and you’re immediately struck by how secure everything looks. The windows are several inches thick, and the door made of solid steel. Ahead of you is a counter with a sheet of thick glass between you and the clerk inside.

“Greetings!” He says with a shallow bow as you approach. “Welcome to the new Ooarai shooting range! Will all of you be shooting today?”

“Yep, all seven of –”

You’re interrupted by a light elbow to the ribs.

“Probably not a good idea to give Saki a gun,” Aya whispers when you lean down.

“Right, six of us will shoot, and one spectator,” you correct yourself. Each of you pay after your offer to cover it is rejected and you move through a side door into a briefing room. There’s a TV which plays a short video: treat the gun as if it’s loaded, don’t point it at anything but the target, listen to the range marshals, and so on.

After that and being given hearing and eye protection, you’re finally released onto the range where handguns are sitting spread across six of the ten lanes. You each take up your positions, and watched by two steely eyed marshals, you start shooting.

You do alright all things considered. Usually when you’re shooting a gun you have a steady stream of bullets to correct with and the targets, you’re aiming for are a lot bigger than the paper at the end of the range. You still manage to land all your shots on the target though, even if not all of them are on the bullseye.

You finish your magazine, then put the gun down, step back and observe the Rabbits.

Karina’s certainly having fun if the way she’s bouncing up and down is any indication. It means she keeps missing her shots, but she’s having fun at the very least. Yuuki is similarly enthused though you’re not sure whether that’s because she’s enjoying it or because of what it will do for chances of finding a boyfriend. Aya and Ayumi seem to be alright with it. Aya fires the main gun for Rabbit team, so the impact is likely a bit less on her and from what you remember, the shooting range wasn’t Ayumi’s first choice.

The real surprise is Azusa. Before the shooting began, her hesitance was clear for all to see. Now, she seems to be loving it. You eventually go back to your stand to empty another magazine and when you take your second break, you’re joined by most of Rabbit team. Azusa however doesn’t stop. The pattern repeats itself several times, until you and the rest of Rabbit team retire to a nearby bench with Azusa working her way through all her ammunition and what the five of you haven’t shot.

“Someone had fun,” you tease her as the lot of you make your way out of the shooting range.

“It was a novel experience,” she replies, slightly embarassed but trying and failing to keep a straight face. “I’d like to try it again someday.”

Azusa considers that for a minute. “Yeah, I might just do that, thanks Commander!”

“No problem, Azusa. I’m sure Ruby would be more than happy to help you.”

“Yeah! And anytime I’m in Ooarai, I can just come here!” She seems to be getting more excited as she thinks about it.

“We also have a dozen other guns, pintle mounted or otherwise,” you muse. “I have my MG-131 for example.”

“I’d forgotten about those,” she murmurs. “Every other tank has a hull machine gun of some kind!”

“They sure do,” you reply. “And I’m sure the owners wouldn’t mind you having a go.”

You spend the rest of the ride back talking guns with Azusa. You no nothing compared to Ruby, but you know enough from dealing with weapons almost daily to hold your own.

When you reach the schoolship, you hug each and everyone of the Rabbits as they say goodbye. Once they’re on their way, you make yours back to your apartment.

Saturday 14th October (Day 180)

That morning when you wake up, it’s to a message that you and most of the Sensha-Do club are needed for filming from early afternoon. That’s fine by you, as it gives you the morning free. You sit up in bed and scratch the recently reappeared Otto’s neck.

The message is followed by another from Eiga, this one specifically to you, your crew, and Anglerfish team. It’s a reminder that this is an important scene where Anglerfish team manages to overtake.

You skim it, then put the phone away ready to make the most of your morning.

>See what the volleyball club does in the morning.

You consider just lying in a little bit longer or having someone over for brunch for a moment. Then you remember that the volleyball club is usually always doing something worth looking into, so you decide to investigate that instead.

You get up and decide to put gym clothes since whatever they’re doing is probably going to be physical in some way. You eat a small breakfast, then make your way to the sports centre where they usually set up shop.

You arrive to an odd scene. One half of the sports centre is set up with a volleyball court. The other has several tables set up with books, pens and notes strewn across it. You watch for a moment as the Ducks play volleyball. They continue non-stop for a few more minutes before an alarm goes off.

They pause, take a breather, and begin making their way over to the table.

“Oh, hey, Commander!” Noriko greets you as she sees you. “What’s up?”

“I just wanted to see what you guys are doing,” you reply. “What are you doing?”

“We’re revise-volleyballing!” Akebi chirps. “We alternate between revising and playing volleyball!”

“Hence the notes on one side and the volleyball court on the other,” you say.

“Exactly!” Taeko nods. “It’s very effective!”

“Is it?” Shinobu deadpans.

“Well, it’s fun!” Taeko corrects herself. “And we get to play volleyball which is always a plus!”

“The volleyball club for a reason huh?” You ask.

“Exactly!” Taeko replies with a small clap. “Do you want to join us?”

>Join both.

You don’t even have to think about it.

“Sure,” you reply, immediately beginning your warmup stretches. The second you do, they also abandon their work and prepare to play volleyball, no doubt more eager to do the volleyball half of their session.

You decide against calling them out on it, and after finishing your stretches, you hop onto the court with them.

As always when playing volleyball with the Ducks, it’s intense. You can tell they’re a little winded from their playing before your arrival, but you can also tell they’re doing their best not to let it slow them down.

Set, jump, spike, block. You go almost nonstop till the timer goes off ten minutes later. The volleyball is dropped and the four of them make their way to the table.

“Now, we work for twenty minutes,” Noriko explains through huffed breaths. It’s a bit hard to work when everyone’s trying to recover from the intense volleyball a few minutes earlier, but some work gets done. That’s enough for the club to call an end to the work twenty minutes later and go back to volleyball.

The cycle repeats for an hour and a half, till it’s time to leave so you can get ready for filming. You help them pack up, then head home to shower, change, and eat.

You reach the warehouse just under an hour later. It’s buzzing with activity, far more than usual, as both film club and Sensha-Do club members move about. As you enter, you’re handed a script by a member of the film club that walks off before you can ask them anything.

You flick through it as you head to your tank, and see that it calls for you to lose control as Anglerfish passes you to win and open fire on them.

>Protest Eiga’s decision, that’s not the character you’ve been playing all this time.

>Take it to Kuta or Yusa to discuss. Maybe they can help?

You read it and sigh. You’d rather not do it like this. You give it a think before deciding on cornering one of Eiga’s subordinates. Yusa is a little less eccentric than Eiga, and Kuta can probably be nudged in the right direction a bit easier than any of the others.

Kuta is hard to find. She either isn’t in the warehouse or can do a very good job of not being found when she doesn’t want to be. Yusa is thankfully easier to find. You find her next to the theatre, talking to a couple of the girls from the art club. She sees you approach and sends them on their way before turning back to you.

“Hermann,” she greets you. “How can I help you?”

“I wanted to talk to you about the script,” you reply. “I think that the way Eiga’s written it for the beginning of the fight is at odds with how I’ve been portraying the character.”

“Is it now?” She hums as she re-reads the script. “Hmm, I suppose you have a point, but is it too big a stretch of the imagination that the bad guy could get angry? Even if he hasn’t before.”

“But losing control completely?” You retort. “That’s a little out of left field, don’t you think?”

“Eh, point,” she shrugs. “Could you not just take it on the chin so we can get filming? We only have today and tomorrow morning to film. Changing the script could put the entire thing in jeopardy.”

“I’m not asking you to move the heavens and the earth,” you frown. “Just change the motivation a bit.”

“So, what do you have in mind?” She asks. Yusa doesn’t give you a chance to answer. “I can ask her to maybe tone it down a little bit, but at the end of the day, it has to be you firing that first shot to start a tank fight. It would probably be best if you just went with it.”

>“Glad that you asked…[insert idea here]”

Can’t think of a good streamlined idea but maybe a mix of a toning down and something along the lines of Herman’s character and rest of the crew gradually getting more upset about not being able to get rid of the Anglerfish girls and maybe one of the girls says some slick shit to them through radio and that’s the reason they open fire. Not exactly sure if that’ll do though

>“Glad that you asked…”

“I think it would be better if we toned it down from losing control to getting upset gradually,” you explain. “Hell, maybe one of the Anglerfish girls could say something over the radio? I think that’d fit better than the current script.”

“Maybe,” she hums before sighing. “This would’ve been easier if Eiga hadn’t let herself get talked into putting a tank fight into the movie. Give me a minute.”

You do so, and remain silent as Yusa mutters to herself, pondering what to do.

“Okay, I think I have something,” she begins. “How about, you’re getting angrier as they get closer, but it can be a kind of cool anger, not hot. Then, as they pass, their radio operator, Sara-”

“Saori,” you correct.

“Right, Saori,” she nods. “Says ‘excuse me’, then you reply ‘no, excuse me’ and open fire. How about that?”

“What do you mean by ‘cool anger’?”

“Well, hot anger would be like ranting and raving and stuff like that,” she replies. “But we can get a lot of shots of you frowning and sneering and stuff like that to make it clear you’re not happy with the way things are going.”

“And you’ll be able to convince Eiga to make the changes?”

“This much? Yeah, probably,” she replies. “Any more than this and you have to go talk to her yourself, because I am not going to deal with that Eiga.”

You decide against asking what ‘that Eiga’ is.

>Agree, it’s a decent compromise.

“Sure, we’ll go with something like that,” you nod. “It’s better than Eiga’s plan anyway.”

“Debatably,” Yusa replies. She notes something down on the clipboard she’s carrying before turning her attention back to you. “You can head back to your tank now. I’ll handle this and update the script. There shouldn’t be any major changes for more of the cast.”

“Right, thanks for your help,” you say. She doesn’t acknowledge your response, instead marching off, into the theatre. You decide to take her advice and head for your tank. Your crew are already there, kitted up and ready to go. You don’t have to do much, just get up and into your cupola. The Sensha-Do club begins to set out a few moments later behind Miho and you duly follow.

Miho guides you to a part of the road that’s been blocked off specifically for filming today. Since it’s a weekend, you don’t think the city will be too inconvenienced, but your time is limited all the same.

A few minutes after you, the rest of the film club arrives. Most of them were already on set, preparing and placing cameras, but a few more arrive by truck and at least one group by air, as you see a couple of the aviation club’s helicopters landing nearby as well. Things are more or less ready by the time you arrive, but the final preparations give you a few minutes to do something before filming begins.

>Talk to one of the other groups about their supporting roles. (Public Morals Committee)

You decide to take the time you have to go talk to the Public Morals Committee, people that you don’t talk to. You have nothing against them, but you usually have no reason to talk to them outside of business.

They’re by their tank, tactically scuffing themselves. At this point in the movie they’ve already been taken out due to their failed attempt on Anglerfish team and are dirtying themselves to reflect that for when the camera pans to them.

“Commander Hermann,” Sodoko greets you with a nod. “How are you?”

“I’m well thank you,” you reply. “How are our Public Morals representatives feeling about the movie?”

“Good,” she replies with a small, satisfied smile. “We were quite surprised to be considered for a bigger supporting role than merely appearing in the movie. Being an actress has been an experience. I know for certain both Gotou and Konparu enjoyed it.”

The two girls perk at their name and one, you think it’s Gotou replies. “It’s funny. Before this the closest I got to acting was detaining a member of the film club.”

“Sounds like quite the story,” you reply.

“Just protecting the honour and integrity of the school,” she shrugs. “Nothing much.”

“You don’t say,” you say amused. You chat with the Morals Committee a little bit longer before filming is ready to commence.

You head back to your tank and mount up. Once you’re ready, you pull away onto the racetrack and slowly work your way through it. The rest of the club form in their positions either behind you in the race or off to the side somewhere if they’ve been knocked out.

“Alright, Hermann,” Eiga’s voice crackles through your ear. “Cameras are rolling from the moment you reach the halfway point.”

>Order Max to drive aggressively. You need to make Anglerfish work for the overtake for it to be convincing. Maybe even have Leo coordinate with them.

“Hey Max,” you begin as you approach the halfway point.

“Yeah Fritz?”

“Make them work for it,” you order. “Leo, talk to Saori, make it look good for me, okay?”

“Sure thing.” As expected Leo has no issue with being told to talk to his girlfriend. “What will you be doing?”

“Well, someone has to be sticking out of the tank to deliver lines,” you grumble. They’ll have to be dubbed over, since there’s no way any microphone could pick up what you’re saying over the noise of your tank and the wind, but you still have to make the movements.

You pass the halfway point, and you hear Eiga shout ‘action!’ Immediately, you have your war face on.

“They’re going to start gaining on us,” Leo says for your benefit. You’re then able to use that to shout ‘they’re gaining on us’ to be dubbed in later.

That’s how it continues for the remainder of the lap. Leo will coordinate with Anglerfish team to come up with some cool looking attempted pass, then pass that information on to uou to ‘order it’ just before it happens. Anglerfish team even nudges you with their tank once and you hit them with a flat glare on instinct.

Eventually, you reach the final stretch of the course where Anglerfish is meant to overtake you. Leo duly informs you, and as you hear them approach you, you turn to glare at them again. Miho’s unfazed, but you do it anyway.

“Saori just said excuse me,” Leo reports.

>Reply ‘No excuse me’ as they pass and open fire.

You go with the line you’ve been given.

As you say it and Anglerfish pass you, you begin to rotate the turret in Anglerfish team’s general direction. You’re pointed at them a couple of seconds before they cross the line, but you wait till they’re over it before ordering Ruby to fire.

She duly does so, and Werewolf’s gun roars. Nothing comes out since you fired a blank, but a building just past Anglerfish erupts as if it had actually been hit. Anglerfish team starts zigzagging and a moment later when you cross the line,

“Cut! Cut!” Eiga shouts over the radio.

“You heard the lady, Leo,” you say as you hear that. “Pull us over.”

He duly does so, and a moment later, the Panzer IV pulls up next to you.

“That was a thrill, wasn’t it, Fritz?” Miho asks as she pops out the top of her tank. “I know it wasn’t an actual fight, but it sure felt like one!”

“I wasn’t expecting the explosion,” you admit, looking at the building. “I wonder how the film club got permission for that.”

“The building is scheduled for demolition,” Yusa says, appears from nowhere. “A promise to thank them in the credits was enough to get them to set off an explosion for us.”

You share a look with Miho. “That’s pretty cool,” she says for the two of you.

“We’ve gotten quite close to a lot of different companies in the city in our time,” Yusa replies cryptically. “Now, I need the two of you for dubbing and to go over the tank battle that’s going to be filmed tomorrow.”

“I suppose this has to be done today, doesn’t it?” You ask.

“If you want a finished movie, then yes,” she replies. You sigh dramatically before hopping out of the tank to follow her.

“Axel’s in charge!” You shout. You immediately hear a thump as he pre-empts Max doing anything stupid.

You hear a cry from Max about how unfair that was before the rest of the crew reminds him, he’s the cause of 90% of your problems. It isn’t very many numbers-wise, but statistically it is.

You leave Axel to it and follow Yusa to one of the helicopters with Miho. The aviation club student piloting it is vaguely familiar, and you return their nod as you hop aboard and strap in.

It’s a short hop from where you’re filming back to the schoolship. From there, instead of going to the warehouse, you head to the main school building. Yusa leads you to a classroom that’s been hastily soundproofed by wrapping insulation over the windows and recovers the door with more once both of you are inside.

The recording and voice acting itself isn’t hard, your lines are short given they were shouted in the heat of a tank race. What is hard is keeping a straight face as you see Miho go into commander mode in a classroom. Miho has a similar problem, but Yusa helps you get through it with a judicious application of glares and nudges to the rib.

>Find the history club, think on a plan to continue the investigation.

You say goodbye to Miho and Yusa as you leave the main building and head for the house that the history club shares. You knock on the door, and you’re let in by Saemonza.

“Here to discuss the trail of gold?” She correctly guesses. She leads you through to the lounge where the rest of the history club is relaxing.

“Hey Mackensen,” Erwin greets you. The rest of them are watching a documentary on Rome, Caesar probably picked it.

“We’re going to snoop around General Yamashita’s old home in the area where Nagayama shipping was active,” Caesar explains. “It’s been abandoned for a while, so we shouldn’t run into any trouble.”

All heads turn to Erwin the moment you say that.

“What?” She asks, slightly confused.

“You’re the pilot,” Oryou replies. “Why didn’t you think of that?”

“The place is so small it’s barely worth it,” Erwin argues. “It’s not like we’re searching Mount Fuji again!”

“We’ll take one anyway,” Caesar declares, ending the brewing argument. “We’ll ask the aviation club if we can borrow one of theirs.”

“Probably for the best, unless you know someone else with one they can lend us,” you joke.

“Most humorous,” Oryou replies. You don’t think they found it very funny.

“When are we planning to go?” You ask.

“On Monday and Tuesday is the culture festival, as you know,” Saemonza says. “On the second evening we’re planning to use the time to investigate this instead.”

“So Tuesday evening?” You ask.

“Aye, Tuesday,” Caesar confirms. “Though if you’re busy on that day and want to reschedule, we’re not too fussed.”

“The next day would be Sunday next week,” Erwin frowns. “The day before the end of term, no way we want to do it then.”

“We don’t want to lose Mackensen though,” Saemonza points out. “He’s probably going back to Germany straight after his match.”

“I haven’t planned that far ahead yet,” you admit.

“So Sunday is still open,” Saemonza adds. “For now.”

“Of course I’m okay with flying!” Erwin replies, puffing her chest out. “I’m one of the best pilots on Ooarai!”

“The best pilot on Ooarai who was in tears when it rained while she was flying?” Caesar asks innocently.

“Hey! It was basically a hurricane! Plus that was months ago!” Erwin retorts immediately.

“I remember the windsock not moving,” Oryou says quietly.

You move in between them before Erwin can retort. You position yourself right in front of her and lean down.

“Erwin, Tuesday night. Will you be able to fly?”

“Yes,” she answers confidently. “Yes I will.”

“That’s all I need to hear,” you answer as you stand. “Be ready for Tuesday.”

“Aye aye,” Saemonza says quietly. You take your leave after that. You know it was mostly harmless teasing, but you’d rather have a confident helicopter pilot than not.

Sunday 15th October (Day 181)

That morning, you wake up to another message from the film club, this one is only sent to you and Anglerfish team, letting you know you’re needed to film the final fight.

You forward it to the group chat you share with your crew to make sure they read it, then roll out of bed.

You feed Otto and let him out when he paws the door - he’s probably heading for Anzu. A short walk later, and you’re at the warehouse.

You’re quickly dragged into the briefing room where Miho and Eiga are already going over the plan. It’s more or less a cat and mouse chase to the river where you’ll be knocked in, though Eiga assures you only you and your crew – not your tank – will be going in the water.

>Roll with it, cat and mouse is a trope for a reason - it’s pretty good.
>Suggest the fight is more even, your tank is too vulnerable for that to be possible.
>Suggest something else, cat and mouse is a bit over used (what?)

You have no problems with it, and as such, you don’t voice any complaints. Eiga is keen to spend as much time as possible on filming, so the second everyone is in agreement, you’re loading up and shipping out.

When you reach the town, you realise why Eiga was rushing, the path you’re taking cuts straight through the busiest street in Ooarai. She must have some serious persuasive powers to get the mayor to shut down the high street on a weekend. That, or the city council just likes the Sensha-Do club that much.

You soon reach the starting point, that being around the corner from the finish line where you took a shot at Anglerfish team.

“Ladies! Speed up!” Eiga bellows. “Literally! You need to be going full speed by the time you get to the cameras!”

Miho looks back to you for a moment before giving an order to Mako who promptly increases speed.

“Max, match them,” you order. He doesn’t verbally respond, but a moment later, the turbine you call an engine starts to whir and you take off after them. You follow Anglerfish team for a minute, and even let off a blank shot against them. More accurately, it’s aimed at a nearby discreetly marked building. There’s a puff of smoke and rubble said building as the small explosive set there explodes. Unfortunately, it’s not as big as an actual tank shell explosion would be, but you’re not allowed to destroy these buildings.

You follow Anglerfish team as far as you can, but their tank is smaller and lighter than yours and able to make turns you don’t bother thinking about. Thankfully, Eiga took that into account and subtlely marked different turns for you to take.

That’s how you find yourself rolling north through the largest street in Ooarai. Every so often Miho will appear from a pre-planned position and snap a shot at you, with you snapping one back in return. They mostly miss, a building nearby ‘exploding’ when you do, but occasionally they ‘hit’. You see a bit of Miho’s spaced armour pop off, and you’re surprised to see some of yours come off too. A quick chat with your team confirms that Eiga approached them and they knew it was going to happen but didn’t tell you just to screw with you. Dicks.

You decide against any one-liners. You may have spit out a couple over the course of the movie so far, and you may be ‘cold angry’, but at the end of the day, it’s your character to do with as you see fit, and that includes making him a smooth operator. The only things you say are orders to your crew, as you would in an actual tank fight.

You slowly crawl through the city, following Anglerfish and the subtle markers the film club has placed for you. Your head is screaming at you, telling you it’s the wrong way to go about hunting a team like Anglerfish team. You should be using your speed and your smoke to keep them guessing just as much as you are. Ultimately, you decide as another ‘shell’ detonates against Werewolf’s turret, you blame Max as your head wouldn’t have been as vocal if you’d known about the pyrotechnics and he’s as good a scapegoat as any.

You edge closer to the river, guided both by the signs and Eiga’s voice in your headset. It’s a one way conversation given you’re mostly on camera throughout your drive, but she’s useful enough when it comes to directions given she’s lived in the city most of her life.

Anglerfish team darts out in front of you, and you order Max to give chase. A burst of speed through the side street they go down puts you squarely in front of the river, with Miho zipping around to get behind you.

“Cut!” Eiga yells as they close in. You can hear Anglerfish slamming on the breaks behind you., and they screech to a halt inches from you.

“Time for your swim!” Miho shouts from behind you between giggles. “I hope you packed your floaties!”

>“Joke’s on you, I hear the water’s lovely this time of year.”

“In the middle of September? A week before we switch to winter uniforms?” Miho asks, eyebrow raised.

“What, you’ve never taken a cold shower before to toughen up?”

“Uh, no?” She falters slightly.

“Exactly! Lovely water for that!” You don’t take cold showers either, but Miho doesn’t need to know that.

“Alright! That’s enough faffing about!” Eiga bellows as she marches on set. The film club members that had been resetting the cameras to film your swim double their pace as she arrives. “We’ve given back most of the streets to Ooarai, but we still have this one, and they’d like it back!” Eiga spends another five or so minutes just barking orders at the film club members around her.

“I wonder how they don’t just get sick of her?” Ruby asks, appearing through Max’s hatch.

“Probably because she’s so good at her job,” Leo adds, appearing from his own. “We’ve only been shooting for a week at most, and under the pace she’s set, we’re almost done.”

“She’s also,” Max grunts. Ruby disappears a second later, and he appears out of his hatch. “A very good director from what I can remember.”

“The best,” Eiga retorts joining your conversation. “Certainly the best this side of Japan, probably the best on the other side too.”

“You need something from us?” Max asks.

“I need you all to dive in and come to the surface so I can film it,” she says. “No rush, we’re just blocking a dozen or so people from their homes and businesses.”

“We get the message,” you sigh as you stand up on your tank. The rest of your crew slowly join you. “The cameras rolling?”

“Yes, whenever you’re ready.” Eiga quickly backs her way out of the shot. You share a look with your crew before taking a breath and jumping in.

Cold. Is your first thought. The water isn’t freezing, just very, very cold. You’re under water for a few seconds before instincts kick in and you’re swimming for the surface.

You’re the second person up after Axel who apparently just moved closer to the bank then stood up. The rest of your crew resurface a few moments later.

“Cut! Help them out!” Eiga orders. Immediately, film club members appear at the bank and a small rowboat just upriver. It’s unnecessary given you’re all strong swimmers, but you appreciate the caution.

Anglerfish are standing at the side of the river, and Saori immediately gets to babying Max and Leo. Hana does the same for Ruby, and you and Axel are left to the tender mercies of Miho and Yukari. It’s pretty good.

>Go home, find something warm to cuddle. Yuzu, Otto, you’re not picky.

You enjoy the gentle ministrations of Miho and Yukari for a few minutes longer before you push yourself to your feet. Werewolf is still sitting on the edge of the river and while he’s unlikely to go anywhere, it isn’t a definite, and you’d rather not leave him there while you recover.

The five of you remount Werewolf and take a small amount of solace in the shield from the wind. You start up your tank and a moment later, you’re on the road. The streets have been reopened for traffic, so you have to carefully slot yourself into traffic. Thankfully, most drivers are used to the odd tank on the road and having 40 tons on the next heaviest vehicle helps when it comes to getting right of way.

It’s a short journey to the schoolship. You less weave your way through traffic and more push your way through, but none of the drivers really seem to mind. You stay with the tank as long as it takes to get Werewolf parked up and mutter a goodbye to him and your crew before heading back home.

You send a text to Yuzu letting her know you’re back and heading home. When you do reach home, Otto is there, sitting on the bed. He seems rather surprised when you dive in and grab him, but he doesn’t seem to care about it.

You don’t know how long you’re lying down for, but you wake up later when you hear the door open. There are quiet footsteps, then the door to the bedroom creaks open.

“Heyo,” Erika says softly. “You ill?”

“Not yet,” you reply.

“Yuzu told me to tell you she’s on her way. You want something to eat? I could maybe cook something. Your kitchen is well stocked.”

>“Wait for Yuzu before you do.”

“Why, I’m not going to burn down your kitchen!?” Erika demands.

“Think of it as a bonding experience,” you murmur. “Between the two of you.”

“We’re plenty bonded! I’m cool with her and she knows I’m a badass!” Erika retorts.

“She does, does she?” You ask quietly. “She shouldn’t be too long.”

“God fine,” Erika sighs dramatically. “The things I do for you.”

“Love you!” You shout after her.

“You too,” she grumbles reluctantly. You hear her shuffle off to the kitchen and begin to pull out what ingredients you have. There’s the occasional crash or bang as she drops something, but otherwise there’s no indication that she’s cooking.

The door opens again a few minutes later. It’s probably Yuzu, and that’s confirmed by the pleasant drone of her voice from the kitchen. The kitchen is now in good hands, so you let yourself drift into a slightly deeper slumber.

“Good morning,” Yuzu says, gently nudging you awake. You blearily blink yourself awake and see that it is not in fact morning. “Food is ready if you are.”

“Mhm,” you mumble back as you get up. You feel slightly ache-y as you do. Apparently jumping into a cold river during autumn isn’t the smartest idea. Who knew?

Regardless, you get up and head for the table. Erika is sitting at the head of it, covered in ingredients, but looking very pleased with herself. The kitchen is similarly messy, but at least it’s not burning. On the table is a simple stew. Meat, potatoes, vegetables. You even thing you see a bit of seasoning on it.

“Erika cooked,” Yuzu explains. “I just helped a little.”

>“Good job then, Erika.”

“Damn right it’s a good job,” Erika chuffs. “Now eat!”

You’re handed a small bowl of bread to have with it. You share a look with Yuzu who just shrugs innocently before dipping the bread in the stew. You decide to follow her lead and take a bite. Your first thought is that there’s no way Erika’s cooked this because it tasks far better than anything she’s ever cooked. That’s not a high bar given Erika’s cooking is mostly biohazardous, but the stew you’re tasting is genuinely good.

“The stew’s pretty good, Erika,” you say after you finish your first bite. “And you made it all by yourself?”

“With a little help,” she chuffs again.

You look to Yuzu for an explaination.

“Just a bit of guidance,” she explains. “Nothing too major.”

That explains it, you reckon. Erika probably cooked it all herself, but Yuzu was standing right behind her making sure it tasted alright.

The three of you finish off the stew in a comfortable silence. As you’re putting your bowl in the sink, you look at the mess that Erika made and decide that’s a problem for another day.

With dinner sorted, the three of you drift towards the sofa. Erika browses the channels before finding a movie she likes, a Clint Eastwood one from the looks of it. You can’t tell it from the other dozen or so cowboy movies he’s done, but it’s entertaining enough, so you relax onto the sofa with Yuzu on one side and Erika on the other.

“So, Hermanns,” Yuzu begins. “The end of term is coming up next week, any plans?”

“I’m going to visit home,” Erika says immediately. “It’s been waaay too long.”

>“I’m probably heading home too. I haven’t seen the folks in a while.”

>“I have no idea. I’m probably going to decide at the last minute.”

“Fritz!” Erika immediately begins to complain. “What do you mean you haven’t decided yet!?”

You turn to your sister, Yuzu snickering quietly in the background. “I mean what I said. I haven’t decided on whether I’m staying here or going home.”

“But think about Ma and Pa!” Erika argues. “They’ll be heart broken if you don’t come back! Devastated!”

“Are you sure about that?” You ask her, eyebrow raised. “I think they’ll survive if I don’t.”

“You think, but you don’t know!” Erika insists.

“Well, if you decide that your parents will survive another week without you,” Yuzu interrupts. “We’d be happy to have you at our house. Neither of my parents dislike you, and the boys don’t mind you.”

“Don’t give him any ideas!” Erika orders, leaping over you to attempt to silence Yuzu. At least, that’s what Erika wanted to happen. What happens is that she lands on your stomach winding you. You crumple instinctively, locking Erika in place. Yuzu just sits in place, watching amused.

Erika tries to squirm over you, but you quickly grow tired of receiving elbows to the stomach, and you move her back to her position on the other side of you. You see Erika considering another attempt, but she either sees how tired you look or no good reason and decides against it.

“If you are going to come home, you should probably book soon since flights will get expensive,” Erika finally says.

“Money isn’t really the problem right now, honestly,” you admit.

“That’s not a good attitude to have,” Yuzu tuts, lightly smacking your arm. “How does the saying go? Look over the cents and the dollars will look after themselves?”

“See! Listen to Yuzu, she’s smart!” Erika declares. “Book early! Avoid extra costs!”

“Weren’t you attacking her a moment ago?”

“Only metaphorically,” Erika retorts. She says it so confidently it takes you a moment to realise that makes no sense.

“Erika?” You ask slightly confused. You see a brief flash of embarrassment on her face before she beats it down and looks back indifferently.

“I say what I mean and mean what I say,” she shrugs. “If you don’t understand me, that’s a you problem.”

You can only sigh. “Where did our parents go wrong?”

“April 16th seventeen years ago,” she answers. You just glare at her.

>Spend the rest of the day sitting in with two of your favourite girls.

“I think the mistake was a year or so later,” you reply, pushing her back into her seat. She collapses back into it.

“You have to come up with your own joke,” she sighs dramatically as she makes herself comfortable against you. “But I suppose I’ll let you off just this once.”

“How kind of you,” you reply drily. Yuzu on your left just watches the two of you amused. You hold your arm out to her and she takes the invitation, also making herself comfortable against your side.

You spend the rest of the day doing nothing but watching whatever movies Erika chooses to put on. They’re mostly westerns, and Erika tries to explain the plot about confederate gold and bandits and something or the other to you, but it’s confusing at times. You can however appreciate the well-choreographed fight scenes as well as the characters.

You wake up late in the middle of the night. The TV is still on, and Otto has found his way onto your lap, but it’s dark outside. You take a minute to enjoy the warmth from all three bodies surrounding you before going about sorting them, so the situation is more comfortable. Yuzu and Erika are deposited on your bed, and you fold out the sofa into a makeshift one. You also leave Otto on the bed where he’ll be a little more comfortable, but the cat loyally follows you back to the living room before depositing himself on your chest.

You wake up slightly panicked and late for school in the morning. It takes you about five minutes to realise that there is no school. Technically that’s due to ‘revision time’ but more realistically, everyone is going to be using it to go to the Saunders Culture Festival.

>It’s on for two days, there’s no rush. Make a big breakfast and find out more about it first.

You decide against rushing off to Saunders half-cocked on an empty stomach. Instead, you decide to repay what Erika and Yuzu did for you yesterday, and promptly realise that Erika’s mess is still present.

You therefore amend your plan slightly and deal with the worst of the mess first. Dishes chucked into the sink are rinsed and left to dry. Pans necessary to cook with this morning are washed and those that aren’t shoved underwater, and the counter is cleaned enough for your eyebrow to stop twitching at the sight of it.

With that dealt with, you get to cooking. You decide against anything fancy, just making some sausages, hash browns, beans, and bacon. You don’t have any mushrooms even though you had some. A brief look in the bin reveals that someone attempted to cook them yesterday, and failed miserably.

Breakfast isn’t a very fancy affair. Yuzu and Erika eventually stumble out of bed, lured by the smell of food. You serve the two of them, and after a few moments for them to eat and wake up, you get down to business.

“So, the culture festival is today,” you begin. “Does anyone have any idea what’s special about it?”

“Well, from what I know, the second day is mostly dedicated to the movies the invitees produced,” Yuzu says. “As far as I know, the first day is just sort of a normal festival but more Saunders-y.”

“As far as you know?” Erika asks, eyebrow raised. “You’ve never been before?”

“Well, Ooarai has never been invited before. Probably because Saunders didn’t even know we exist,” she explains with a shrug. “I can’t really blame them given we didn’t do much.”

“Still kinda rough,” Erika says patting Yuzu’s leg sympathetically.

“Eh, sticks and stones, you know?” Yuzu replies. “Apart from Saunders festivals being more American than any other, soldiers from Yokota are present.” She considers that a moment. “Maybe that’s why it’s more American. They probably have a lot of money to spend.”

“Saunders is pretty rich already though,” Erika chips in. “Do they really need more money?”

“Do you think they’d say no?” You counter.

>“Well, the soldiers we met in Germany gave us an engine, so hopefully these ones are cool too.”

>“Festivals are always good. Hell, it’s a chance for you to woo Rosehip, Erika.”

Erika just glares at you. You see her contemplating jumping over the table to get to you, but thankfully for your table she decides against it. She holds it for a solid thirty seconds before sighing and turning to Yuzu.

“Why couldn’t you have had higher standards? I haven’t been able to make fun of him for being a loser since you started dating him.”

“Uh, sorry?” Yuzu offers, clearly not expecting that. “Is it that hard to just ask her out though? You know she likes you.”

“It’s far harder than that!” Erika insists. “Neither of you would know!”

“We wouldn’t?” You ask, making eye contact with a bemused Yuzu. “We were dating within-”

“La la la la la la la la, I can’t hear you!” Erika interrupts. She continues for a minute till she’s sure you’re not going to bring it up again.

“I thought you were sixteen, not six,” you say as she finishes. Erika just blows a raspberry.

With Erika done being difficult, you manage to enlist her help to clean up what’s left of the mess she made cooking. It’s quick work between the three of you and you split up to get ready to go.

You don’t have much to do. You just change out of your pyjamas and make sure that Otto has enough food to last him the day. Erika and Yuzu take a bit longer, but you just put that down to girl stuff and leave it at that. During the night, Ooarai’s schoolship has berthed in Nagasaki. You’re about a hundred or so meters away from Saunders’ schoolship, but it’s so big in comparision, that it’s still casting a shadow on the deck, mightily confusing most of the wildlife that calls it home.

Erika and Yuzu meet you at the ramp into port, and the three of you make your way to Saunders.

>Find Kay, see what she has to say about the festival.

“How about we go find Kay?” You suggest. “She’ll probably know the ins and outs of what’s happening here.”

Neither of them have any better suggestions for the moment, so they roll with it and follow you deeper into the schoolship. A quick bout of texting reveals Kay’s right at the centre of the whole thing, and the three of you alter your path. It takes time to reach her given the size of Saunders, but you soon make your way over to her.

She’s standing next to a massive screen. Perhaps the biggest screen you’ve ever seen. It’s set in the middle of a clearing on Saunders’ training grounds and the only reason you didn’t see it before is because of the sheer height of the buildings on Saunders, especially compared to Ooarai.

“Hey guys!” She shouts, waving at you when she spots you. “How are you?”

“We’re good, thanks,” you reply. She gives you a firm handshake which you return before looking up at the screen.

“That’s a big screen huh?” You ask.

“For you,” Erika replies immediately. That gets a laugh from Kay.

“Someone’s already in the spirit, huh?” Kay laughs. “But yes, it’s a big screen. It’s so big we had to flood some ballast on the other side to make sure the ship doesn’t list.”

“Is that safe?” Yuzu asks.

“Well, we are in port, and we can pump it out whenever we want, so it should be alright!” Kay answers.

“Could you tell us a little more about what’s going on here?” You ask.

“Sure,” Kay nods. “Well, it has it’s standard festival stuff, obviously, and the giant movie screen is going to be playing the movies everyone filmed most of the day tomorrow. Aside from that, there’s a tour bus taking people around Saunders, as well as a normal one just to get around. There’s games and stuff near the other end of the ship, too.”

“What about the soldiers?” Erika asks.

“Who?” Kay looks confused for a moment before slapping her forehead. “Oh right! The soldiers! They’re mostly harmless to be honest. Think of them as tourists that are too loud. They have a stand somewhere to show off their ‘Army in Japan’ Sensha-Do club, but that’s it. Any of them get to rowdy, just give them my name, and watch them melt. Word of advice, use the bus if you want to see everything, because Saunders is way too big otherwise.”

I’m confused on the bus vote, are the top choices guaranteed on using a bus or do we have to vote from the bottom choices as well to use a bus or not if we don’t go with the tour bus vote?

>Go to the festival stuff, see if it’s any different from the others you’ve been too.
>Don’t take one, you’ll be able to experience a lot more even if you see a lot less.

“We’ll take it under advisement,” you promise. “We’ll be heading out now.”

“Have fun!” Kay chirps. “Have some for me too since I’m stuck here making sure we don’t sink the schoolship!”

You think she’s joking, but you’re not a hundred percent sure she is. You therefore decide not to try convincing her to tag along.

“Is Layla around?” Erika asks.

“Course she is,” Kay replies. “As for where, who knows? It’d probably be best to call her yourself and ask since she’s avoiding mine.”

“Something the matter?” You ask.

“Nah, she’s just avoiding work,” Kay snorts. You chat to Kay a little longer before leaving her to it and heading out.

You decide to check out the festival first, you’ve been to plenty since you’ve come to Japan, including one on Saunders before, but you’re eager to see if this one’s different.

The three of you walk into town, content to take the scenic route. The buses take the main roads which are faster, but you get to see some of the culture. Old buildings that don’t exactly fit the surroundings, a plaque dedicated to some old hero, a statue or two that look older than the schoolship. It’s not a lot, but it’s a lot more than what you’d seen before of Saunders.

You soon reach the area where the festival is and it looks slightly different, but it’s still a festival. The stalls are bigger, and the food is bigger too. There are several different variations on the burger, each far bigger than what you’d usually see in Japan. There’s also a wide variety of stands dedicated to hotdogs and other fast food, as well as mega-sized desserts.

There are rides too. Most of them are things you’ve seen before, like a bouncy castle or a ferris wheel, but there is a roller coaster. It’s short, probably due to issues with the wind or some such, but it’s still a roller coaster going fast.

Finally, there’s a movie theatre. It’s playing several movies, on several different screens. You quickly realise that they’re past entries for the film festival, though whether they were winners or not, there’s no mention.

“Layla’s around here somewhere,” Erika announces. “I’m going to go find her.”

“Not Rosehip? What if she gets jealous?” You tease.

“Rosehip isn’t on the ship yet,” Erika sniffs, ignoring the second half of your comment. “See ya.”

>Take Yuzu on the fastest ride you can.

“See you,” you say back as Erika darts off. You watch her go for a moment until Layla’s familiar form appears to greet Erika. They chat for a few seconds, look back to you, then disappear into the crowd.

“Not going to say hello?” Yuzu asks.

“Nah, I’d just be holding them up,” you reply. “Delaying our plans too.”

“Oh?” Yuzu quirks her eyebrow. “What exactly are our plans?”

“We,” you grin. “Are going to find the biggest, fastest ride in the park and we’re going to ride it.”

“Are you sure about that?” Yuzu asks.

“A hundred percent sure,” you reply.

“There’s one problem,” she says. “There are so many of them.” She manages to keep a straight face as she gestures to the funfair which only has two roller coasters, but plenty of other rides.

“We’d better get started then,” you say. You take her offered hand and the two of you speed-walk over to the funfair.

The first ride is a tough choice. There are a lot of good ones to choose from, but eventually you pick the taller of the two roller coasters based on the reasoning that gravity makes things go fast and a tall ride will have more of it, and it doesn’t disappoint.

It’s a pretty standard affair. The two of you take your seats and the train of seats slowly makes its way to the top of a series of drops. You then proceed to go down those drops at high speed. The experience is only made better (or worse) by the swaying of the ship, adding to the motion of the ride. One girl ends up being sick during the drop. You hope it didn’t hit anyone.

Pick as many as you want, but it’ll leave less time if you want to do something else.
>Slugger, all the riders are in a small ball shaped compartment which is then slung up and forward by what looks like a very large slingshot.
>Electromagnetic drift, the other roller coaster. Relies on magnets instead of gravity to get to high speeds. Apparently.
>The spinner. You are locked in a set of seats that spins. That spinning seat of seats is spun with the others while you’re going up and down. Pretty self-explanatory.
>Bumper cars. A carnival staple. Comes in both child cars and adult cars.
>Tunnel of love. Who knows, you can’t see inside it from here.

>Electromagnetic drift, the other roller coaster. Relies on magnets instead of gravity to get to high speeds. Apparently.

“So, Electromagnetic Drift,” you say as you eye the ride. It’s spiral-shaped, the train rising high before spiraling down into smaller and smaller circles till it reaches the ground. “Is it safe?”

“It uses the same technology as the high-speed trains,” Yuzu explains.

“So, they aren’t touching the tracks? That doesn’t sound safe at all.”

“Do you see any of the trains going flying into the sea?” Yuzu counters. You watch it go up and down twice before you’re satisfied.

It’s fast. Also, way more expensive than any ride has the right to be, but it’s fast. The rails are angled inwards, so the train doesn’t go flying off the tracks, which is just as well, because the g-forces border on oppressive as you spin in tighter and tighter circles at the same high speed. Yuzu next to you is pressed into your side. It’s a good thing you sat on the inside, otherwise, she’d have been squashed.

You exit the ride a minute later, very dizzy. Apparently, that’s very common, as they’ve put a bench nearby for riders to use to regain their bearings.

“That was fun,” Yuzu groans, head in hands. “But let’s not do that again for a while.”

“Agreed,” you groan in response. “Up for something slightly less intense?”

“What do you have in mind?”

>Tunnel of love. Who knows, you can’t see inside it from here.

Yuzu is skeptical of the Tunnel of Love at first, especially since she can’t see inside it, but eventually, curiosity wins out and she agrees.

You pay the schoolgirl manning the ride and help Yuzu into the boat before getting in after her. It’s shaped like a swan, and then you set off.

The ride is very calm. You gently drift through the tunnel, occasionally bumping into a wall. It’s designed like a park by a lake inside, which would be alright in a lot of places, but you’re on a school carrier on the sea, so the effect is somewhat muted.

“RAAARGH!”

Yuzu jumps from the seat onto you at the scream, and you do the same, though you’re kept from moving by Yuzu. A jump scare, in a tunnel of love. You suppose it makes sense in that it made the two of you get literally closer, but you’d have appreciated some warning.

There are a few more scares before the end of the ride, each as effective as the last at getting the two of you to jump. Yuzu storms out of the ride, apparently done with it.

>Take a tour bus, they probably won’t have any jump scares.

>Some food and drink will help the both of you calm down.

You take a second to collect yourself before jogging over to Yuzu.

“Hey, do you want to go get something to eat? I see a massive burger calling our name.”

“I..yeah,” she sighs collecting herself. “It’s past lunch time anyway, so we might as well get something.”

You place a hand on her shoulder and steer her out of the funfair. The food vendors are set up just outside, and you’re quickly able to start picking. You only get a burger and fries, but it’s a big enough serving to feed the two of you, with you splitting the burger two thirds to one and the chips closer to fifty-fifty. You wait for Yuzu to have eaten most of it before you say anything else.

“Feeling better?”

“Yeah,” she says. “It was pretty funny looking back at it, but I did not appreciate the bait and switch.”

“I wasn’t expecting it either,” you muse. “I thought it would just be a leisurely cruise.”

“And it turned out to be as heart pounding as the other rides, hmm?” Yuzu jokes.

“I suppose it did,” you laugh. “Which one was your favourite?”

“Electromagnetic drift,” she replies. “I knew you had some muscle, but being pushed against them?” She squeezes your bicep for good measure.

“What can I say?” You reply with a quick flex. “Sensha-Do does that to a man.”

You flex for a little bit longer and exaggerate a bit. You feel slightly ridiculous, but a laughing Yuzu is better than a sulking one. You soon finish eating, and the two of you take a short walk around the town as you digest your food and consider what to do.

The tour bus or seeking out the US Army’s stands are both still options. You also have a text from Kay asking you to find her whenever you’re free, but not to rush yourself.

>Go find out what Kay wants.

“Shall we go find out what Kay wants?” You ask Yuzu as you notice the message.

“Well, we’re not doing anything else right now, are we?” She replies. “Let’s head back then, shall we?”

You text Kay an affirmative and ask where she is. She shoots back a message saying she’s in her office in the schoolship’s tower. You have no idea how to get there, but a quick question to the nearest Saunders girl sees you on a bus heading in that direction.

You reach the tower, and you’re mildly surprised to see it guarded by two girls dressed like MPs. You share a look with Yuzu, who just shrugs before moving forward.

“Hi, we’re here to see Kay,” Yuzu says.

“That’s Commander Kay to you,” one of them snaps back. She stares you down while the other makes a call, presumably to Kay. A moment later, they open the door, and look at you expectantly. You just shrug and walk in, Yuzu following you.

“Friendly people, ey?” You joke once you’re in the elevator and out of earshot. Kay’s office is clearly marked on it, so you press the button and head up. The elevator is fast, so it’s a short trip.

You walk out into Kay’s office, and as with everything Saunders has, it’s big. The office is at least double the size of the Student Council office on Ooarai, and it’s filled with stuff. A movie corner in one place, a trophy cabinet in another, piles and piles of paper related to tanks and running the club. Kay is seated at her desk and waves to you as you enter.

“Hey! Doing okay!?”

“We sure are, nice place,” you say. You take a seat on one of the chairs opposite Kay, and you’re slightly amused to realise it’s bigger than Anzu’s, let alone the chair Kay is sitting on.

“So, what do you need?” You ask.

“Tomorrow is the film part of the culture festival, as you know,” Kay begins. “The films will be playing from about ten in the morning till the evening, with breaks in between and all that. We usually judge by a committee made up from the tankers of the different participating schools, so I thought ‘why not extend an invite to my good friends from Ooarai?’ I had Miho in here not half an hour ago.”

“So, you’re inviting me to judge?” You ask.

“Sure am,” Kay says with a smile. “No pressure though, it’ll be long.”

“Well, I appreciate the offer, Kay,” you reply. “I’m afraid I’m going to have to pass though.”

“Really? You’re breaking my heart, Fritz,” Kay says.

“Your guilt tripping would be more effective if you weren’t grinning like a shark,” you say drily.

“What can I say, I wear my heart on my sleeve,” Kay shrugs. “I can understand though – sitting through eight hours of movie? It can take a toll on you.”

“I imagine it would, but the only reason I’m declining is a prior engagement. Myself and the history club are going on an expedition.”

“Ooh, I love Indiana Jones,” Kay sits forward, more interested. “Anything interesting?”

“A research project into Ooarai’s past, right Fritz?” Yuzu chips in.

“More or less,” you nod.

“Boo,” Kay sticks her tongue out. “I thought it’d be something interesting like a hunting Nazis or buried treasure or something.”

You share an amused look with Yuzu as Kay inadvertently suggests exactly what you’re doing. “What can I say? We find it interesting.”

“Sure,” Kay says, finally relaxing back into her seat. “Well, I’m not your CO, so I can’t make you, much as I’d love you to be there. How are you finding the festival so far?”

“We’ve had a lot of fun on the rides most of today,” you answer. “Big portions at the stalls too. One burger fed both of us.”

“Mhm! We sent specialists to the USA to make sure the servings are the same size they are there,” Kay boasts. Before she can continue, Yuzu speaks.

“I have a bone to pick with whoever designed your tunnel of love,” she frowns. “It’s designed to look like a normal calm one and yet it has jump scares! Ridiculous!”

“Oh yeah, blame Alisa,” Kay snorts. “Surprise surprise, she’s still single.”

“If that’s what she thinks is romantic, I’m not surprised,” Yuzu grumbles.

>Walk around the Saunders schoolship, burn off some of the calories you’ve eaten.

The two of you chat with Kay a little longer, then take your leave. You consider heading home, but Yuzu suggests going on a walk around the carrier before you leave. You have nothing planned for early tomorrow, so you quickly agree, and you begin walking the perimeter of the ship.

“What a nice day, huh?” Yuzu asks as the two of you walk towards the bow. “Aside from…a certain experience, I haven’t had this much fun in ages.”

“Hmm, how long has it been since the last festival?” You muse. “We didn’t see much of the culture today though, did we?”

“I don’t think many people did,” Yuzu says with a shrug. “Can’t say I blame them given the games and other attractions they could have a go on. I’ll be honest, I’m ninety percent sure that it was just an excuse for another party for Saunders.”

“And the other ten percent?”

“Is only mostly sure,” she answers, earning an amused snort from you.

The two of you continue your walk towards the bow. Saunders is quite a bit bigger than Ooarai, so you agree to just go to the bow, then back to the ramp amidships.

You soon reach the bow where it opens into a park like on Ooarai. It’s facing into town right now since the schoolship is in port, but you can imagine that it’d be a great view at sea. You begin to move forward into the empty park, but Yuzu stops you and points to something. You squint in that direction and realise that it’s Erika and Rosehip, just sitting and chatting. You watch for a couple minutes, but nothing else seems to happen.

You watch for a moment, before shaking your head and gesturing away.

“You don’t want to see how it ends?” Yuzu asks curiously as she quietly turns away. “Wouldn’t your mother want pictures of something like this?”

“She would, but I don’t think Erika would appreciate it too much,” you reply honestly. “I’d be in constant fear for my health if she ever found out.”

“I guess that’s good enough reason,” Yuzu nods. You walk in silence for a few minutes more before she speaks again. “I don’t think anything’s going to happen tonight.”

“Why not?” You ask, slightly amused. “I didn’t know you were a love expert – taking lessons from Saori?”

“No, nothing like that, there just weren’t any fireworks,” she says. “They made the difference for us, you know.”

You’re slightly confused for a moment before you remember. “You mean actual fireworks?”

“Mhm,” she nods. “Fireworks. Really made the difference in my opinion.”

“I suppose they made things more…explosive,” you answer, earning yourself a huff and a punch to the shoulder.

You make small talk with Yuzu as you head home, just chatting about the upcoming weeks. Apparently, talk of the Unlimited-lite you’ll be competing in has got around and several teams have asked Miho to enter them. You’re limited to two per school though, so there’ll be decisions to make, both about who to bring and the distribution of equipment that’s illegal for Sensha-Do, but legal in events like the Unlimited class.

You eventually reach home, and the two of you slot yourselves into bed then fall asleep.

You wake up late in the morning the next day. Early enough that if you hurry, you can make it for the beginning of the movies, but late enough that you don’t really have much time to waste. As you begin to get up, you notice Erika, sprawled across the foot of the bed, sleeping like the dead. She must’ve been out late yesterday. You hope things went well for her.

>Let the scent of breakfast wake her as you make it, she probably won’t care if she misses a bit of the first one.

You decide not to wake your sister yet. Instead, you shuffle her over to your recently vacated position. Otto immediately notices the new body and makes himself comfortable against her, freeing up Yuzu so you can wake her up and get ready.

She heads to the bathroom to get ready, while you head to the kitchen. You haven’t had much time to restock over the past couple of days, but you have enough to make some eggs and toast.

Yuzu appears soon after you’re done and takes her position opposite you. The two of you eat in relative silence till Erika appears, Otto in hand.

“Yo,” Erika grunts as she takes a seat.

“Yo to you,” you reply as she digs in. “Have a good night?”

“Hmm,” she takes a moment to think about it as she munches away. “It was alright.”

“Just alright?” You ask, nudging her.

“You’re not getting any more out of me,” Erika grumbles. “It was alright, bordering on good.”

“That sounded like more,” Yuzu says innocently. That earns her a tired glare before Erika goes back to her eggs.

You and Yuzu soon finish eating and offer to wait for Erika before leaving. She says not to bother and stumbles back into your bedroom, though whether that’s to shower or sleep you don’t know. Even worse, Yuzu informs you she has some errands she needs to run quickly. You offer to go with her, but she assures you that you wouldn’t want to come, and she’ll be back before the movies begin anyway. You reluctantly let her go and promise to save a seat for her.

>Find seats by the Student Council, they’re probably going to be watching somewhere.

You make your way down from Ooarai, into port, then over to Saunders. Thankfully, Saunders and Ooarai are berthed next to each other. You feel sorry for the girls from St. Gloriana who must walk the entire length of the port, or the Pravda girls who have to arrive by boat and helicopter.

All of the other attractions are still open, but a glance in their direction shows you that no one is going that way. Instead, as expected, everyone is heading towards the Saunders Sensha-Do training area where the massive cinema screen is set up.

You follow the crowd and soon reach the screen. It’s then you realise that Saunders have really gone all out. A makeshift amphitheatre has been set up behind rows of seats on the ground. There’s also an awning covering the entire seating area which would help to protect from any rain, though the forecast is clear for now.

You consider the task of finding the Student Council amongst the masses of bodies for a minute before deciding against it. A quick text nets you a position and you weave through the crowd to them. You find the meeting point when Anzu bounces off your stomach. Thankfully for Anzu, Momo was behind her to keep her upright. Thankfully for Momo, the Saunders schoolgirl behind her is able to push her upright.

“Watch it! I’m walkin’ here!” The very short girl snaps at her. Momo doesn’t have a chance to retort before she’s disappeared into the crowd again.

“Friendly huh?” Anzu asks rhetorically. You can see Momo getting angry, so you quickly change the subject.

“Shall we find somewhere to sit?” You say at Momo. “Do you have any preferences?”

“The middle,” Momo says. “It’s obviously the best sound wise.”

“Nuh, uh! The back is the best,” Anzu retorts. “No neck strain from looking up!”

>Agree with Anzu, relaxing at the back is the best.

You’re torn between the two seating choices. On the one hand, Momo is right about the sound in the middle being better, especially since that’s where the judges are going to be sitting. On the other hand, you’re going to be in those seats for a long time and you’d rather not be too uncomfortable.

You weigh the two choices in your head before deciding that since you could potentially be here all day, you’d rather be comfortable doing it.

“Momo, Anzu’s got a point you know?” You say. “We’re going to be here for hours, might as well have a little bit of extra legroom while we do.”

You can see Momo consider arguing, but she bites her tongue and nods. “Yeah, we don’t want to be so cramped we call it quits.”

“Glad we’re in agreement!” Anzu declares. The three of you make your way through the crowds, and luckily you’re able to find four seats together. They’re across two rows, but it’s preferable to sitting apart, so you take one of the rear seats and leave the front ones to Anzu and Momo.

Yuzu arrives a moment later, just as the opening credits are beginning to roll. She takes the seat next to you and you turn your attention to the screen. They roll for a moment, but you don’t see any names you recognise yet. Then, finally the title is revealed, also revealing who is behind the movie.

>The S Team by Saunders

It opens on the Saunders cafeteria, which is big. Probably bigger than the warehouse you keep all your tanks in. The camera ignores most of the crowds to focus in on one girl sitting by herself at a table.

You realise it’s Alisa a moment later. The camera follows her as she gets up, grabs a tray, buys her lunch and sits back down. You’re beginning to wonder if it’s a mistitled documentary before the action starts.

The doors leading into the Saunders cafeteria slam open, and smoke grenades are thrown in, which causes chaos as many of the schoolgirls start to flee. Alisa, however, doesn’t get that chance and is captured by masked assailants. The last you see is her being bundled into a van, which departs at high speed.

It then switches to a news report on a TV. “Breaking news, the Governor of Saunders’ daughter has been kidnapped from her school earlier today. The People’s Revolutionary Schools Committee has claimed responsibility and is demanding an end to freedom, good food and tankery for her return. Currently there has been no comment from the Governor.”

The TV then blinks off, and the camera zooms out to reveal Kay and Naomi in military garb in a small, dark room.

“Looks like our next mission,” Kay says as she stands.

“Looks like a convenient way for the Governor to get rid of us,” Naomi drawls, cigarette in hand. You’re slightly amused to realise it’s made of chocolate.

“Well, that’s our job isn’t it? To be expended for the greater good?” Kay retorts. Naomi has nothing for that, dropping the cigarette and crushing it under her foot.

After that, the action begins, and it doesn’t stop. Apparently, the People’s Revolutionary Schools Committee is based on an island. Saunders then proceeds to bombard said island, using tanks parked at the edge of the school ship. Said tanks then board LSTs to be deployed on the beach where they’re met by T-34s and the odd KV. What’s more interesting, is Kay, Naomi, and their crews using Sherman DDs to sneak in while the bulk of the island’s forces are distracted.

The movie culminates in a fight between Kay and Naomi in their Shermans against Layla in her Pershing, the two eventually flanking and defeating her to rescue Alisa.

The movie ends, and the credits roll as the Saunders troops evacuate and the island blows up. You sit up as you notice a pair of F-4 Phantoms fly over the island as it does.

“What did you think?” Yuzu asks. “Looked pretty good to me.”

>“Why didn’t we get Phantoms in our movies?”

>“How typically Saunders.”

“Very typically Saunders,” Anzu drawls. “The only suprising thing was them winning through a bit of cunning in those Sherman DDs rather than just pushing through with the initial landing.”

>“Maybe we should get Sherman DDs. Might help improve our tactical mobility.”

“The skirts aren’t too expensive, and we have the Shermans,” Momo muses. “Though I can’t imagine that the propellers will be anything other than a hassle ninety percent of the time.”

“But think about the other ten percent,” you say. “More importantly though, why didn’t we get Phantoms in our movies?”

“Because we filmed a racing movie,” Anzu shrugs. “Didn’t see the point in going through the hassle to get them for one.”

“But we could’ve got them?” You ask. “They do that kind of thing?”

“Sure. The Self Defence Force is decomissioning them so they’re happy to use them for publicity stunts now,” Anzu says. “Still a lot of effort though.”

You chat for another fifteen minutes, before the next movie comes on.

“The Woman with the Golden Tank,” you read quietly. A spy film then, though you’re not sure how that will mesh with tanks which are the opposite of stealthy.

You quickly realise that it’s St. Gloriana’s film when the first person you see on the screen is Assam. She’s wearing a suit, and her hair is pulled back, but it’s Assam. She enters a fancy building that looks like a cathedral, which you realise is a building on the St. Gloriana’s schoolship since it doesn’t look like a cathedral inside. She walks up into an office where she is greeted by ‘Rukuriri-penny’.

“I’d like to see D,” Assam says.

“Certainly, double oh, A,” Rukuriri-penny replies. She’s let through to see Darjeeling. Who gives 00A the mission to go to Yokohama, find a gang leader driving a golden tank that killed an agent and take them out. Thankfully for the movie, there’s no sayings, though you can tell from the way Darjeeling’s gripping the teacup, the temptation is there.

In lieu of a sports car, she uses a Daimler Armoured Car which is very fast for an armoured vehicle anyway.

The rest of the movie goes exactly how a modern spy movie would be expected to go. 00A goes to a party where all the gang leaders are meeting up. While at the party she meets Rosehip, who is the female lead. A charming word and a PG-13 implied sex scene later reveals she’s is, or rather was, the Woman with the Golden Tank’s girlfriend and that if they head to the parking garage downstairs, they may be able to catch her.

They don’t, and a tank chase ensues, which eventually ends with the golden tank (a Crusader) being destroyed in a straight gunfight since it couldn’t see the Daimler fast enough, but Assam and Rosehip could see her.

>Go tease Erika about Rosehip’s movie appearance.

The second the intermission begins, you know exactly where you want to be.

“I’m going to find Erika,” you announce as you stand up.

“Go easy on her,” Yuzu huffs, slightly amused. “Especially if Rosehip is there as well.”

“No promises!” You shout back as you weave your way through the crowd. Half of the crowd is up and moving, either heading to the toilet, or to acquire snacks for the next several hours of movies. A few are leaving all together, but you barely notice them.

You head down the rows of seats till you reach the middle, but slightly to the left and back. The amphitheatre is big, so you stand in the general area of Erika’s preferred seating and look around. It takes a couple of minutes of searching the amphitheatre, but you spot the familiar head of hair and make your way over to her. To your delight, you spot Rosehip approaching as well.

Erika quickly spots your approach and glares at you. “Don’t start.”

“Damn,” you reply grinning.

“Fritz Hermann, don’t you dare!” Erika says again glaring at you.

“Just god damn,” you reply, ignoring her warning. “Was Rosehip hot in that movie or what?”

You can see her thinking about lunging at you, but thankfully there are enough people around to make that a hazardous decision.

“Fritz!” Erika whines. “Not here at least.”

“What? I’m just commenting on the movie we all watched a few minutes ago,” you grin. “You know the one with the scene where Assam and Rosehip bang.”

“Where the agent and the girlfriend bang!” Erika shouts back, fuming slightly. Further reply is cut off as Rosehip comes into earshot. She’s carrying a massive box of popcorn and an extra-large bottle of coke.

“I’m back with the snacks!” Rosehip declares as she arrives. “Oh, hello, Commander Hermann. I didn’t notice you there!”

>“Please, it’s Fritz. We’re basically family at this point.”
>“I see that I’m interrupting your date. Apologies, I’ll take my leave.”

>“I see that I’m interrupting your date. Apologies, I’ll take my leave.”

“You’re not interrupting anything!” Rosehip assures you. There’s a second of silence after that. “It’s not a date either!”

“What is it then?” You ask. “As far as I can see, the two of you are out seeing a movie together. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck…”

You don’t finish the saying and instead wait to see what they’ll come up with to explain it away as not being a date. By now they should have just given in and made it official, but both stubbornly cling to the fiction, so all you can do is prod them.

“It’s an intimate get together,” Erika finally declares. “Not a date.”

“So, a private and personal meeting between two people?” You ask. At this point both are red as Rosehip’s hair, so you decide to leave it there. “Sure, whatever you say. Have fun getting together.”

You then take your leave before they can retaliate.

>The Godmother by Anzio

You reach your seat as the opening credits for The Godmother start to roll. It’s clear in the first several seconds it’s an Anzio movie when a caption appears on the screen. ‘New Sicily, Japan’.

It opens on an idyllic shot of Anzio’s schoolship. The camera zooms into a building, then a window, then into a room where a meeting is taking place. Anchovy is sitting at the head, with Pepperoni and Carpaccio standing behind her. Opposite them is another girl, and all of them are suited up.

“So, what you’re tellin’ me,” Anchovy begins. “Is that your boss wants to bring drugs into my city?”

“And you’ll get a cut of the profits too, Duce Al-chovy,” the girl nods nervously. “I was one of the chief chemists behind AB-POS, so I can assure you, it’s addictive as hell – you’ll be raking in money from the junkies in this city.”

“I see,” ‘Al-chovy’ says, nodding. She says nothing for a moment before standing. “Right, I have to discuss this with my associates. Pepperoni, take care of our friend here.”

“Sure thing, Duce!” Pepperoni nods, stepping towards the chemist. Anchovy and Carpaccio make their way out of the room, revealing an indoor garden with colonnades that the two of them walk under.

“We can’t bring drugs into the city,” Al-chovy declares. “We’ve spent too long working the Senate to lose them over something like this.”

“Are you sure, boss?” Carpaccio asks. “It’s a lot of money.”

“Somethings are more important than money,” Al-chovy declares. “I won’t risk the family for a bit of extra cash.”
>>
>>4971349

They go back and forwards for a bit before Carpaccio acquiesces and leaves to tell the rest of the family of Al-chovy’s decision. Al-chovy returns to the meeting room, only to find Pepperoni dragging the chemist’s body.

“What happened!?” Al-chovy demands.

“You said to take care of ‘em, boss! So I did!” Pepperoni says proudly. “I was just about to put her to sleep with the fishes!”

“No, you idiot, I said take care of her, not take care of her!” Anchovy berates her. “Make her a cup of tea! Not kill her!”

“Oh,” Pepperoni laughs embarrassedly. “That would make sense given how cordial you were being earlier… Haha!”

That sets the tone, and drive for the rest of the movie.

By killing a chemist of a rival gang, they’ve opened themselves to a gang war, so the ‘Anzio family’ decides to strike pre-emptively. Al-chovy gets a spy embedded in the family to arrange a meeting with the head of the other family to give Pepperoni a chance to take them out. Unfortunately, ‘Don’t kill the one wearing the blue shoes’ gets garbled in translation and their own agent is wacked.

The plan to cut off the leadership of their rivals and end the gang war before it can start therefore fails. The rest of the movie is the Anzio family surviving the war, much to their rival’s dismay. A car bomb fails as the car gets impounded for being illegally parked. An assassin captured because a bucket of lobsters about to be prepared for dinner falls on him and are very angry about it. A failed drive-by because the driver took his car to a garage owned by Carpaccio’s sister’s boyfriend’s father-in-law who recognises them and cuts the brakes. The movie doesn’t take itself seriously, and neither do you. The only tanks in the movie at all are the CVs as stand ins for regular cars and the P40 pulling half a limo behind it for Anchovy to use.

“A tank limo, huh?” Anzu mutters. “It would probably be cheaper than an actual one. What’s the most powerful tank we have?”

“Power to weight wise? Probably Werewolf,” Momo answers.

>“Don’t get any ideas, Prez.”
>“And where would you get the money for one of those?”

>“You wouldn’t be able to afford our fees.”

“Probably not,” Anzu admits. “But I control Koyama!”

“You do, do you?” Yuzu asks, slightly amused.

“I do,” Anzu nods. “At least until the end of the week, then I have no power over anyone anymore.”

“And what a sad day that’ll be,” you say drily.

“I’m glad you understand, Fritz,” Anzu nods as she dramatically wipes away a tear. “Truly, a dark day for Ooarai.”

Anzu’s lamenting the loss of her powers continues throughout the short intermission. However, she stops when she sees ‘Ooarai Film Productions’ flash up on the screen. Now, it’s your movie playing. Just in time too, as it’s the last one that you’ll be able to watch before you leave with the history buffs.

The film opens on a shot of a dandelion in the grass. It stays on the dandelion for a few seconds before you begin to hear the clattering of tracks approaching. A second later, the dandelion and the grass it was on has been torn up, and the shot switches to a tank drifting around the corner of a track.

It’s Anglerfish team, and as the commentators on the race they’re in say, they’re about to win and secure their place at the Monaco-Ooarai 500. The camera follows them for the last few turns of the race, which they win handily.

Then there’s an introduction to all five members of the team. It seems the film club has just played on their personalities, as Mako is still the prodigy driver, and Yukari is now the tank racing nerd instead of just the tank nerd. Saori and Hana are explained away as race engineers which helps justify the extra crew in all the other tanks too.

From there, you’re able to recognise most of the scenes in the movie. After a brief interlude of Anglerfish at home, it moves to the introductions to the other racers. The other teams get their introductions first, but yours is the longest non-main protagonist one. It’s also the coolest, and others seem to agree from the way a few of the tank drivers around you nod appreciatively at Max’s drift into the pit.

The movie continues, there’s Anglerfish getting acquainted with the new course, you meeting and threatening Anglerfish for the first time, and the introduction to your henchmen. When Erika appears on screen, you can faintly hear her shouting ‘that’s me!’ You feel sorry for the ears of the people sitting next to her.

The race starts soon after that. Anglerfish slowly work their way up to the front third of the race, having started from the back after a ‘mishap’ courtesy of Erika during their qualification lap. Most of Anglerfish working their way forward doesn’t involve you, but there’s the occasional flash to you talking to your subordinates by something or another. You have to admit, the film club was smart to be filming inside the tanks, as it’s given them a lo of footage they can use in response to other scenes if necessary.

The film continues exactly as you knew it would. The attempts to knock them out of the race fail, and Anglerfish make it all the way to the front of the pack. You cringe a little at the ‘no, excuse me.’ One-liner, but it gets a couple of laughs, so you suppose it isn’t too bad. The fight is well shot, though you can tell the film club aren’t experts at filming tank battles as they aren’t able to cover everything interesting about it. It isn’t too bad though; you reckon as you watch yourself get thrown into the river. Besides, they did a good job with the rest of the movie.

As it ends, you get a text from Caesar, letting you know that they’ve brought a helicopter to Saunders to pick you up. You excuse yourself from the council and promise to fill them in on anything you find on site.

You head for the helicopter and when you arrive, you find yourself in the middle of a debate on which move was best so far.

>The Godmother. It was the funniest movie there.
>The S Team. Who doesn’t love a good action movie?

>Ooarai Drift. You were in it, ergo best movie.

“It’s gotta be Ooarai drift,” you reply instantly. “I was in it, what else could it be? You guys were in it, too!”

“You see, most of us agree with you,” Erwin begins as she continues to fly the helicopter. “There is however, one person among us who prefers The Godmother.”

“The Anzio film? It was pretty funny, but like I said, I wasn’t in it.”

“Someone here happened to like it because of who was in it. Just like we liked ours because of who was in it,” Oryou says, grinning slightly. You take a look around and there’s only two people that haven’t talked. Saemonza, who’s grinning at Caesar, and Caesar who’s gone red.

“Is it because Carpaccio’s in it?”

“No,” Saemonza answers, straight faced. “It’s because Hina-chan is in it!”

A laugh is had at Caesar’s expense, and there’s some light ribbing, but by the time you’re touching down, you all have other things on your mind.

“There’s a lot of forest,” Erwin observes as she looks for somewhere to set down. You look as well, and you can’t help but agree. There’s a large farmhouse, and some small buildings surrounding a barn. From the building to the barn, it’s all clear, but otherwise the entire area of the property is forested, not ideal for an aerial search.

“How about that small field next to the barn?” Caesar offers. Erwin considers it for a moment before agreeing and putting the helicopter down. You disembark and stretch your legs, then get to planning how you’re going to go about searching.

>Split up into a duo and trio.

>Split up into a duo and trio.
>Search the house first.

“Alright, how about we split up and get searching. The farmhouse and the barn look like the best places to start,” you suggest.

“A sound idea,” Oryou nods. She begins to walk towards the house, and you’re already closest to it anyway, so the two of you head into it. Caesar, Saemonza, and Erwin who’s just disembarked begin to head towards the barn and the other smaller buildings surrounding it.

The two of you reach the building, and you can see that it’s been uninhabited for a while. It’s completely grown over, and the door looks like it hasn’t been moved in decades. The lock looks older than you.

The two of you circle the building once, and the back door is locked shut too. Breaking the windows is an option, but that choice is taken out of your hands a second later.

CRACK

You turn to see what made the noise. It seems Oryou kicked down the front door and is now heading in. You follow her in, and thankfully, it’s not too dark inside. The first room you walk into seems to be a living room and kitchen. Everything is covered in a layer of dust, and you walk through it slowly, careful not to disturb anything. There’s a staircase heading up to where the bedrooms probably are, as well as a few other rooms behind the living.

“Not my area of expertise, but looks 1800s to me,” Oryou says. “Should probably have a basement too then.”

“Hidden deep down – that’s the perfect spot for buried treasure, no?” You ask. “Should be a staircase around here somewhere then…”

It takes a few minutes of searching, but you find the basement, with an intact looking staircase. Oryou chucks a rock down the stairs to check for flooding. Thankfully, you hear the crack of rock hitting hard flooring, so it isn’t flooded.

>Basement first, that’s where anything that someone would want to keep hidden would most likely be.

You carefully begin moving down the stairs into the basement. You take it a step at a time, testing each step before you put all your weight on it. Thankfully, none of the steps see fit to collapse on you, and you’re able to make it to the bottom, with Oryou following slightly behind you.

“Of course, it’s packed,” you sigh looking around. The basement is full of things. There’s what looks like old farm papers, dishes carefully put away in boxes, old clothes.

“Maybe there’s gold buried under this stuff?” Oryou asks hopefully.

“I wouldn’t bet on it,” you reply. You split the basement between you roughly in half, then get to work. You sift through the papers on your side, looking for anything interesting. Unfortunately, there isn’t much – old letters between family, records about a farm which you couldn’t see from the air, interesting, but not useful to you right now.

You don’t know how long you’ve been sifting through stuff when you hear boxes fall on the other side. You look over and see a stack of boxes has fallen over, and Oryou rubbing her head.

“Are you alright?” You ask as you sit up.

“I’ll live,” she mutters. “I’ve found something though.” She stands up and moves out of the way. You look at the bit of floor she gestures to and look closely. “A hatch?”

“A hatch,” she nods.

>“Let’s get the others and go down it then.”

>“Have a quick look and then report back?”

“That was my thought,” Oryou nods as you approach the hatch.

You both go for the hatch at the same time and bounce off each other. You remain standing, but Oryou falls on her behind.

“Ladies first?” She asks.

“Men just before,” you say, taking advantage of her needing to get up to go down first. It’s barely a more than two meters, leaving you just enough space to stand. Once she’s seen that it’s not that far down, Oryou jumps down after you.

“And nothing,” Oryou grumbles as she looks around the room.

You pull out your phone and sweep the room with the flashlight. “Or not,” you say, spotting spotting something.

It’s tucked away behind some other boxes, but the reflection of torch gives it away. The boxes are mostly empty, so the two of you push them out of the way.

“A chest,” Oryou murmurs. She gives it a nudge, and you see that despite having a massive keyhole, it’s unlocked. You share a look with her before the two of you open it.

Unfortunately, it’s not stacked to the brim with gold. There is some – about half a dozen small shiny rectangles of the stuff, but no more. Instead, there’s an old pistol, a knife, and a letter. You ignore the weapons for now, and carefully pick up the envelope.

It doesn’t seem all that likely to fall apart, despite its obvious age. You take a look at it and see a name.

“To Osamu,” Oryou reads. “As in Osamu Nagayama? Hisako Nagayama’s son? Ex-CEO of the Nagayama Corporation?”

“Well, given where we are, possibly,” you nod. “Shall we take this outside?”

“Let’s,” she nods.

The two of you ascend out of the basement, and back to the house. You then head out of it, where the other three girls are walking towards you.

Saemonza now has a sword, while Caesar and Erwin are carrying an anti-tank rifle between them.

“You find any gold?” Erwin asks.

>“A letter addressed to someone, and a tiny bit.”

“It was probably a bit too much to hope to find an entire chest full,” Erwin sighs wistfully. “Guess my six-year-old self will just have to wait a little longer.”

“Did you mention a letter?” Caesar asks, cutting through Erwin’s lamentations.

“Sure did,” you reply. You hand the letter to Caesar who carefully examines it.

“To Osamu,” Caesar reads. “As in Osamu Nagayama? Hisak-”

“Probably,” you interrupt her. “Since we are at an estate his parents lived on.”

“What does it say?” Saemonza asks.

“Well, it’s sealed, so we don’t quite know yet,” Oryou answers.

“Shall we open it?” Erwin asks.

“Osamu Nagayama is still alive,” Caesar frowns. “The letter technically belongs to him.”

“And it’s obvious that the letter’s been sitting there for who knows how many decades,” Erwin says. “So, he probably doesn’t want it.”

“You can’t just say that he doesn’t want it if you don’t know if he was ever sent it,” Caesar retorts.

“I’d bet that letter is either the final clue to where any of this gold is, or, an explaination of what it was used for,” Erwin retorts. “Besides, there’s nothing stopping us from having a look then giving it to him afterwards, we can just say we found it like that.”

Once again, the club has split on what to do, Oryou and Saemonza also take sides. You can tell there’s no malice – all four of them are just passionate about their hobby and show it in different ways. You see Erwin reach into her pocket and pull out a coin which she hands to you.

“Flip this,” she orders. You’re about to do it, but Erwin stops you. “Wait, you’re a part of this too, what’s your opinion on the letter?”

“I say we open it,” you say. “I’d rather not have to try find a pensioner and deliver the letter to him, and potentially not even receive any answers.”

Your support is enough to win Erwin the argument. Caesar hands the letter over to her, and she very carefully opens it.

You peer over Erwin’s shoulder and do a double take, the script looks different from any that you’ve seen before.

“It’s really old, formal Japanese,” Erwin explains, reading your thoughts. “Luckily, we have two people that read it for fun.”

She hands the letter to Saemonza for her and Oryou to read. They have a brief discussion before reading it.

Dear Osamu,

This letter exists as both an apology from me, and an explaination from your father.

Your father did what he had to do in order for us to survive. You know only the relative comfort after we were able to discretely bring back our wealth, but the war was hard for us, the peace doubly so since your father was unfairly taken away from us. For looking out for us your father wouldn’t apologise, and neither will I.

Instead, I apologise for concealing this from you. You deserved to be told and not stumble upon the ghosts of the past yourself. I only hope this doesn’t stop you from using it to prosper.

I love you always,

>“Reckon there’s any chance Nagayama hasn’t used the gold?”

“Considering how fast Nagayama Corporation sprung up? Unlikely,” Caesar says.

“It also depends on what kind of person he is,” Oryou adds. “From what little we’ve seen of him, he’s a decent man, though behind closed doors, who knows?”

“So, no chance of a quick resolution right now,” you sigh. “Can anyone be bothered to search the woods?”

“Can you?” Erwin asks pointedly. You look out at the forest and consider it.

“No, not really,” you reply. “Let’s just search the master bedroom and bring up our haul and be done with it.”

You and Oryou bring up the chest you found the gold and the letter in while Erwin goes back to prepare the helicopter and Caesar and Saemonza search the bedrooms. They end up finding more gold – actual bars this time – under some floorboards, but it’s accompanied by another note to Osamu Nagayama telling him that’s the last of it. You’re not sure whether to believe the letter or not, but it’s getting late, and while Erwin has promised she can fly in the dark, you don’t want to put her under any undue pressure, especially without a co-pilot.

“So, Exams tomorrow,” Caesar’s voice crackles over the intercom. “Thoughts ladies and gentlemen?”

“They’re just internals, they don’t mean much,” Erwin snorts. “Hell, they don’t even matter for Hermann that much thanks to his scholarship.”

“They may not change that, but it will effect what my parents think of me,” you reply. “I’m not too worried though.”

“You hear that Oryou, someone’s done their revision!” Caesar says, nudging the girl.

“Not interesting enough,” is Oryou’s short retort.

>Find Yuzu and “Revise”.

You decide to be responsible. At least partially anyway, and text your girlfriend to inquire about revising with her and perhaps also Anzu and Momo if they’re free. Yuzu promptly responds with a picture of her and the others already sitting together in their office.

You need no further information. You stop only to make sure that your loot is secure in the warehouse and to grab your books before heading to the Student Council office.

“How was treasure hunting?” Anzu asks, the second you enter.

“Is that all I’m good for nowadays?” You ask, sighing dramatically. “Treasure hunting?”

“Very funny,” Anzu replies, rolling her eyes. “I’m assuming that you didn’t find anything big?”

“No chest full of gold,” you confirm. “A chest which had a bit in it, plus some under a floorboard, but not too much.”

You show her the pictures, and Anzu looks through them, paying rapt attention.

“Well, it’s a shame there was no massive chest full of it,” Anzu says, sitting back. “It’s a pretty cool story though – maybe that’s your final year dissertation done already!”

“Maybe, it was a five-man job though,” you shrug. “Shall we get to work?”

Anzu makes to protest, but a sharp glare from Momo, and a raised eyebrow from Yuzu promptly shuts any chance of that down.

You work hard. Not for very long, since it’s the evening before exams, and Yuzu insists everyone leaves early enough to get a full night’s sleep, but you get a good amount done.

“You know Fritz,” Momo begins. “The value of the gold you’ve found would probably be enough to cover the rest of the year’s budget for the Sensha-Do club. The Ministry of Culture buys things like that at a marked up rate if they’re of historic significance.”

“It’d cover more than just the club,” Yuzu adds. “It’d probably be enough for all five of you have comfortable times at university.”

“Do it when you get a chance,” Anzu nods. “I don’t know what else you could do with it aside from holding on to it, but at that point it’s just a really expensive paperweight.”

“I think you should properly note down your story first though,” Momo says. “It’ll make for one interesting read.”

“Do you think so?” You ask with a small chuckle. “It was mostly paperwork honestly.”

“Well, there are people that enjoy that kind of thing,” Momo says. Both Anzu and Yuzu stop and stare at her. “What? I didn’t say us! Just that in however many billion people, there’s got to be some!”

Wednesday 18th October (Day 184)

That morning, there is no morning practice. It feels weird to wake up early, realise that practice has been cancelled, then attempt to go back to sleep. You settle for lying in bed for a while, petting Otto who has no complaints about it.

Eventually however, you have to get up and get ready. A quick breakfast, which is slowed down by Erika arriving to beg for food, later, and you head to the school building. Once you arrive, the students are sorted by year and sent to where they’ll be taking their exams. Since you and your crew are skipping one, you’re all grouped with the third years taking their final high school exams. You’re one of the last ones in, so you can see the Student Council ahead of you, as well as Sodoko, one of the Anteater girls, and all of the automotive club sans Tsuchiya.

The subjects that morning are maths and English. English you can speak fluently anyway, so it’s not that big a deal and maths is maths, no matter where you are. Sensha-Do involved plenty of it, so you’re familiar with it by now.

>Find out what one group thought of their exams (Crew)

You watch people walk out of the exam hall, then immediately burst into conversation, everyone splitting up into groups to discuss the questions. You do the exact same, weaving your way past some of the other girls, and saying hello to the automotive club as you pass.

You quickly spot your crew and head to them.

“So, fellas. Thoughts on the tests?”

“Easy,” Ruby snorts, leaning back in her chair. You’re not surprised by that, she’s the best out of you at maths given she’s the gunner and her English isn’t too bad either. Axel just shrugs and sits back, mimicking Ruby, you don’t think he had much trouble either.

“Maths was alright, but I think I misunderstood a couple of questions on the English paper,” Leo chuckles.

“The person responsible for communicating misunderstanding something,” you muse. “A little ironic, no?”

“Yeah, yeah, laugh it up,” Leo sighs. “At least I’m in a better position than Max.”

You look over to your driver who is face down on the table.

“Did he do poorly at something?” You ask.

“No, he probably got every question he answered right,” Leo smirks. “It’s just he forgot about the last page of the maths test.”

“The one with the highest value questions?” You ask, getting a grunt from Max who’s still face down.

“Well, at least on the bright side, if you got every other question right, you probably still passed,” Ruby chips in. That earns another grunt from Max.

The four of you have a quick lunch before heading back into the hall for the afternoon’s exams. This time its science followed by Japanese. Science is probably one of your weaker areas since you need it for so little, but you do much better in Japanese. Speaking and reading it every day for half a year makes it easier than it would’ve been on arrival.

>Find out the results of the culture festival from someone.

You walk out of the school building and consider where to go usually you’d go. Usually, that’d be the warehouse for practice, but for the next couple of days it’s not on.

You decide to head to the warehouse anyway since you don’t have much better to do. It turns out that a lot of members of the club had the same idea, as it’s almost as packed as it would be during actual practice. There’s the occasional team working on their tracks or doing some cleaning, but most are sitting around their tanks just chatting.

You look around for someone that can tell you what happened at the culture festival. You eventually settle on Miho who you know must’ve been there for the whole thing since she was one of the judges.

Her and Anglerfish team are putting their spaced armour back onto their tank. They pause when they see you approaching.

“Hello, Commander Hermann!” Yukari chirps as you come closer. “How’s it going?”

“Well,” you reply with a smile. “How were exams?”

“So far, Anglerfish team is confident about their scores in the exams!” She reports. “Currently the most confident is Miss Reizei, and the least is Miss Takebe!”

“I never said anything of the kind!” Saori shouts back.

“Your conduct in the exam would say otherwise!” Yukari says cheerfully. It descends into a sort of shouting match. You watch it for a moment before turning to Miho.

“How were the results of the culture festival?” You ask.

“Well, there’s no best movie, but there are a bunch of awards,” Miho explains. “We won best racing movie and most original. The Godmother won best comedy, and the S Team won best action movie.”

>“Weren’t we the only racing movie?”
>“Well, we won two, which is more than anyone else, so I reckon that’s a win.”

>“Weren’t we the only racing movie?”

“Well, yes, I suppose we were, but they seemed pretty excited to have us there, so I didn’t mention that to them,” Miho giggles. “Erika was angry that Black Forest didn’t win anything.”

“Oh? What was their movie about?”

“It was called The Last Tiger. It was about the crew of the aforementioned last Tiger in the dying days of the war,” Miho explains. “It was an alright action movie, lots of good tank battles, let down by weird camera work. They had a chance to do something super emotional, but they couldn’t manage it.”

“And they got out performed action-wise?”

“Definitely,” Miho nods. “They didn’t even come close to the S team.”

“Oh well, it’s not meant to be a competition, is it?” You ask.

“Mhm, it’s more about the spirit of creativity and having fun,” Miho chirps. “Though competitiveness is never far behind, is it?”

“Certainly not where Erika is involved,” you quip, getting a laugh from Miho.

“Speaking of competitions, I had a chat with Mr. Krupp yesterday,” Miho begins. You motion for her to go on, and she does. “He offered to front the operating costs for the rest of the year for the club.”

“That’s generous of him,” you reply. “Did he say why?”

“He said it’s profitable for us to perform well. I imagine that’s the truth given his name is slapped on the back of all of our tanks,” Miho says drily. You glance over to Werewolf. You can’t see the Krupp logo from this angle, but you know it’s there on the back of your turret, a massive reminder to any watching of the company at least partially behind your success.

“He also said we’re free to raid his stores of Unlimited class equipment,” Miho adds. “I’ve checked, and from what Vice-President Koyama’s told me, he doesn’t have as much as the American shops, but it’s probably more than any other place in Japan.”

“Now I’m wishing we hadn’t gotten rid of our mortars,” you muse.

>“We might not need to, but I still want to compete.”
>“If money isn’t a problem anymore, then that’s one less battle we need to fight then, ey?”

>“We might not need to, but I still want to compete.”

“So does half the club,” Miho laughs. “I’ve collected all of those interested. Tomorrow after exams, we should probably have a look through them and order what we need from Mr. Krupp. As great as Krupp Tankery is, I think one day is too short a notice.”

“Unless you’re the automotive club installing a new gun,” you say.

“They’re going to do it in a day?” Miho asks, slightly incredulously as she looks at the new gun. You follow her gaze to the long barrel, smirking as your gunner occasionally looks at it lovingly.

“An evening,” you reply.

“Will you have enough time to practice?” Miho asks.

“A morning,” you shrug. “We’ll make it enough.”

“Heh, well if anyone can do it, it’s you guys,” Miho smiles. You chat with her a little longer about the upcoming fair and elections. There’s also news that apparently a small number of boys will be allowed in as a trial for a wider expansion. You reckon they’re going to have a good time.

Thursday 19th October (Day 185)

That morning you wake up slightly early for exams as usual. You go about your normal morning routine and you’re not at all surprised that there’s a knock on your door. What’s more suprising is that the Student Council has arrived with your sister. Thankfully, you’re not cooking for five since Yuzu, Anzu and Momo all bring something to share, meaning you’re able to quickly make some eggs to go with it. All Erika brings is her stomach.

There’s only two exams on Thursday, and both are in the morning. The first is everyone’s elective, which for you is History. You ace it. You’ve spent enough time book diving and immersed in the subject that it’s not much of a challenge. Social Studies is just as easy. Unfortunately, it had to be taken making for some pretty dull lessons, but the exam is dead easy. You doubt anyone will fail it.

>Help Anzu campaigning for her candidates.

Ooarai is the most lively you’ve ever seen it when you leave the exam hall. You see schoolgirls streaming around the place, some are setting up stalls, preparing for the club fairs to hopefully attract new members from the cohort joining in the new year and hopefully therefore get a bit more funding.

There are also those who aren’t part of any club just enjoying the end of exams. There’s more than one fire lit where books and notes worth a not insubstantial amount of money are being burned to ‘free’ their owners from the burden of them.

You’re on a general path towards the warehouse when you see the Student Council out, and instead begin heading to them. As you get closer, you notice that Momo and Yuzu are weighed down by stacks of paper.

“You girls need a hand with those?” You ask.

“God, I love you,” Yuzu groans as she dumps most of her stack in your arms. Momo follows suit.

“What, no ‘I love you’?” You jest as she does. That gets a snort from Anzu and an embarrassed blush from Momo.

“Leave Kawashima alone, I need her operational till the weekend,” Anzu says. “Since you’re here, you can help us put these posters up.”

“Posters?” You look at the pile of papers, and sure enough it’s a stack of posters calling for Hana, Saori, and Yukari as President, PR manager and Vice-President respectively.

“Yep,” Anzu nods. “Since we’re in control of the electoral planning committee, we can decide who puts posters where. These will be going up close to the polling booths, and no one else can.”

>“Aye, aye, boss!”

>“Isn’t that a conflict of interest?”

“It’s exactly my interest who wins this,” Anzu replies, purposefully missing the point. “I know what’s best for this ship, so I’ll make sure it happens.”

“To answer your question more properly,” Yuzu begins as she takes a small part of her stack back. “It’s assumed that since we’re leaving the school, we won’t be super invested in who wins.”

“Which obviously isn’t true,” you say drily looking at Anzu.

“Assumed,” Yuzu shrugs with a smile. “Most ex-student councils didn’t have to deal with what we did, so I think we’re entitled to it.”

You stop and stare at her. “Yuzu Koyama. You were the one most against this kind of thing. What happened to you?”

“I worked hard to keep this ship out of the scrapyard,” Yuzu says defensively. “I’m entitled to a little bit of corruption.”

“To think, I’m dating a criminal,” you sigh, shaking your head.

That earns you a ‘hmph’ and an upturned nose. “I’m going with Momo-chan then, since you obviously don’t want anything to do with a ‘criminal’.”

“Isn’t the Prez a bigger one?” You ask, but you get no answer as the two of them walk off.

“She’s teasing you, by the way,” Anzu observes through a sweet potato.

“I know,” you say back, snatching one from her. “Let’s get these posters up.”

The two of you go across the ship, setting up posters. They’re mostly close to the polling station as planned, but a couple are put up in high traffic areas.

As you’re doing it, you receive a message from Miho. You dump your stack on Anzu, getting a squawk of surprise and look at your phone. Miho’s gone ahead and decided that she’ll be taking part alongside you and settled on a list of equipment to acquire.

You currently have:

>Agree with her list, that should bring both of you up to competition standards.

You send back a message that you’re fine with what she’s picked out. You get a thumbs-up emoji back, and a little bit of extra information. Apparently, the rest of the schools in Japan are also giving it a go after your and Erika’s success in America. If all of them sent two tanks, it’d make up a pretty big portion of those fighting. A good thing because you know how they fight and have fought them before, but also a bad one given they’re pretty good tankers themselves.

You thank her for the information, then put your phone away. The Prez has been struggling under the weight of the stack for almost a minute now, so you relieve her of the load.

“A thank you would be nice,” you say to her.

“Very funny,” she replies, stretching her shoulders. “What was so important it made you shirk your duty?”

“My actual duty,” you reply as you follow her to the next booth. “Talking to Miho about the match on the weekend.”

“Anything interesting?”

“Just getting things from Krupp – free,” you say, cutting off the question you know was about to follow.

“Hmm, good catch he was,” Anzu muses.

The two of you continue putting up posters throughout the rest of your area. Apparently, Anzu has other helpers taking part, but your area of the schoolship is still big enough that you occasionally must flag a ride down to make it around in good time.

You finish a few hours later, as the sun is setting. The two of you are heading back to a rendezvous point to meet Yuzu and Momo when Anzu verbally jumps you.

“By the way, you’re responsible tomorrow for talking to the new male students.”

“What? It’s not an ambush – I’ve given you notice!” Anzu protests. “A whole twelve hours!” She checks her watch. “Almost.”

“Yeah, we’ll see,” you say, ending that line of conversation. Anzu attempts to wheel you into it a couple more times, but each time you refuse to give a definitive answer.

You soon reach Yuzu and Momo, and the two of them overhear the President’s line of questioning.

“Prez,” Yuzu says disapprovingly, hands on hips. “We’ve chatted about this.”

“Hehe, oops?” Anzu offers.

“You said he’d agreed already,” Momo chips in.

“Well, usually he does?” Anzu offers. Earning a frown from both of them.

“If you guys are done,” you interrupt, coming to Anzu’s aid. “Would you like to come back to mine? I got some beer from Black Forest when we were last over there.”

“Actual beer?” Yuzu asks, interested.

“Actual beer,” you nod. That wins her over, and it seems that Momo and Anzu don’t have much better to do, so they join you, current disagreement postponed.

You quickly reach your apartment and let the council inside. They make themselves comfortable in your apartment as you head to the fridge where the beers are tucked away.

“These are technically illegal for me to have, so this never happened,” you say as you hand them out.

“None of us would narc, not even Kawashima,” Anzu snorts, getting a ‘hey’ from the PR manager. The rest of the evening is mostly light conversation.

You talk about the year, the ups, the downs, and everything in between.

You pause to check your phone and see more messages from Erika. You ask her if it’s urgent, and she says ‘it is to me’ followed by the shy emoji.

“Something interesting?” Yuzu asks, shuffling from her spot on her shoulder to look at your phone.

“Erika saying she has something important to talk about,” you reply, passing the phone over.

“Not scared to give your girlfriend your phone?” Anzu teases.

“Only thing on there is her,” you reply, earning yourself a kiss on the cheek.

“Cute,” Yuzu says. “I bet it’s because you haven’t told her whether you’re coming back with to Germany.”

“How do you figure?”

“She asked me if you’d made any plans to stay with me over the holidays.”

>“I should probably tell her I’m staying then.”

“Probably,” Yuzu echoes. “Otherwise, she might attempt to stage a kidnapping and drag you back to Germany.”

“She wouldn’t,” you scoff. She quirks an eyebrow. “Probably.”

“Right,” she rolls her eyes, but doesn’t say anything, instead making herself comfortable on your shoulder.

You pull out and open another beer, passing it to Anzu, then you grab one for yourself and swig it. It’s pretty hard for a beer, probably the hardest one you’ve had. At least you’re taking it better than Anzu. You never expected her to be a lightweight, but it makes sense given she’s drunk just as much as you.

Momo’s doing well for a first timer. “Have you ever done this before?” You ask her.

“Once at a family party,” she says. “I didn’t really like the beer there, it was too bitter.”

“This… is pretty bitter too,” Anzu manages to get out.

“True, but everyone else is here and drinking,” Momo explains.

“Peer pressure?” You ask.

“I-” Momo begins to protest, but reconsiders. “Yeah, peer pressure.”

“Tut, tut, tut, you should never let others influence your decision,” Anzu chips in.

“We’ve been influencing your decisions for the past three years,” Yuzu points out.

The argument on just how influence Anzu was continues into the night, the last thing you remember is Anzu rolling off the sofa laughing.

Friday 20th October (Day 186)

You wake up the next morning with three extra bodies in your bed. Yuzu’s next to you is expected. What isn’t expected is Anzu using your stomach as a pillow, and Momo behind a pillow wall on the other side of the bed.

>Help Anzu with the incoming male students.

You shift Anzu off you, and she’s promptly replaced by Otto. You then move the cat off, and he’s replaced by Yuzu shifting positions.

It takes you a couple minutes, but you eventually work your way out of bed by using Otto as a replacement cuddle toy. He doesn’t seem to mind the attention. You get out of bed, change, and head for the kitchen. You’re only slightly surprised to see Erika and Rosehip attempting to sneak out, arms full of breakfast supplies.

“Don’t have anything at your own place?” You ask drily.

“Ran out yesterday,” Erika explains.

“And what are you doing on Ooarai?” You ask Rosehip. “Exams done?”

“I’m spying!” She announces. “Miss Darjeeling decided that today is a good day, since there will be so many new faces here for the fair!”

“I see,” you nod. You check the fridge and see there’s enough for you and the others. “Have fun then.”

They say their thank yous and leave. You make breakfast, and after eating with the council, they leave to freshen up before they need to be present for the fair.

Anzu texts you some instructions. There are about a hundred male students joining, spread throughout the years, but mainly in the first year. You’ll be handling that large group of first years, with a little help from the Public Morals Committee, while your crew have apparently been conscripted into dealing with the other groups. You hope Max and Leo don’t put them off.

You head to the main gangway from Ooarai to the harbour, and wait. Sodoko soon finds you, and a few minutes later, a crowd of nervous looking boys begins to gather around you. Members of the Public Morals Committee split them by year, and hand them off to whoever’s going to be looking after them for the morning.

“Hi everyone,” you begin, causing about fourty pairs of eyes to snap to you. “I’m Fritz, Vice-Commander of the Sensha-Do club, and male student.” You look down at your crotch. “Probably.”

Your little joke causes a bit of laughter and has the desired effect of putting them mostly at ease, even if Sodoko frowns in distaste.

“I’ll be helping you this morning, so any questions, please let me know.”

“What’s the dating scene like?” One of them asks immediately.

>“Probably not great for your health to ask questions like those.”

As you say it, you gesture to an annoyed looking Sodoko who’s glaring at the kid that asked the question. He gets the message and pipes down, slinking slightly back into the crowd.

“This is a mistake,” she mutters, rubbing the bridge of her nose.

“Bad apples and all that,” you reply, nudging her. “Besides, if it goes poorly, they’ll be gone in a couple of years.”

“I’m leaving this winter anyway, thankfully,” she grumbles.

You chuckle at that, then turn your attention back to the assembled new students. “Alright everyone, there’s no real agenda for the next couple of hours. My plan is to take you around the school building, show you a couple of the clubs, then take you to town, and let you have at it. Sound good?”

You get a chorus of yeses and acknowledgements. You give them a nod and turn to lead them forwards. As stated, you lead them to the school first. You show them the various departments, talk a little about each one, say hello to a couple of teachers, but there’s really nothing special since it is just a school block.

Then, you take them around the clubs. You start with the more mundane sports club, leading them through the stalls that have been set up to attract new sign ups. You see several of your charges slip away, but you don’t bother chasing given they’ll be fine wherever they go.

You pass a lot of stands before reaching the Aviation club and Sensha-Do club sitting proudly next to each other. Azusa is overseeing your club’s stall and has managed to get her M6 out for display.

One of the boys turns to you. “Can we touch it?”

>“The girls are off limits, but feel free to check out the tanks.”

>“Not my tank, ask Azusa.”

Over a dozen heads snap to Azusa. She panics for a moment, but a second later, remembers that she’s in charge in this situation.

“Feel free to have a look but try not to hurt yourselves climbing on it!” Azusa says with a smile. “Don’t bother trying to get inside either!”

About ten of the boys take up her invitation and move closer to take a look at the tank. You watch them poking and prodding for a moment before moving back to talk to Sodoko.

“I’m surprised only ten of them took the offer up,” you say quietly to her.

“That’s about a quarter of the group,” Sodoko reminds you. “Quite a larger proportion than took up Sensha-Do amongst the girls.”

“True enough,” you nod. “Wonder how many are interested in total.”

The two of you watch Azusa deal with the new students. She fields their questions about Sensha-Do well, but as stumbles a little on questions about other things. You let her suffer for a little bit before stepping in to direct them into town.

The town on the schoolship isn’t anything special, aside from the fact it’s floating. That doesn’t stop your charges from gawking at anything and everything. You get them to the centre, explain that they shouldn’t be too bothersome to the residents, then let them on their way.

“I’m glad that’s over with,” Sodoko sighs. “I was at my limit.”

“All you did was follow us around and glare at them.”

“That’s hard work,” Sodoko insists. “I need a drink.”

>Get a drink with her.

“I’ll come with you then,” you say, stretching your leg.

“It probably isn’t the kind of drink you’re thinking,” she says with a frown. “I know about the beer from Black Forest.”

“How’d you figure that out,” you ask, eyebrow raised. “And I know this is a dry schoolship.”

“Do you now?” She glares at you for a moment, but there’s no heat behind it. “Come on then.”

You’re not really surprised she leads you to a boba tea place. The two of you make your orders, then take a seat at a table.

“So how did you know?” You ask her. “I didn’t exactly advertise the fact I had alcohol aboard to anyone.

“The Public Morals Committee is very good at what it does,” she boasts. “We have people everywhere and anywhere. Including in every club on the ship.”

“What about Johannesburg?” You ask, eyebrow raised. “There doesn’t seem to be much in the way of rule of law down there.”

“We deal with the worst of it,” she winces. “There’s always going to be delinquency, but we do our best to curb the excess.”

“That makes sense I guess,” you reply. Your boba arrives and the two of you get to drinking. The tea is nothing special, and you’re not sure if the balls inside it are worth the extra money. Nevertheless Sodoko seems to be enjoying hers, so you don’t voice any of your complaints.

You soon finish. Sodoko bids you goodbye to head back to her duties, leaving you without a plan at the moment.

>Check the polling numbers so far on the election.

You chuck the empty container and leave the tea shop behind. After a brief moment of indecision, you decide to find out how Anzu’s scheme to get her candidates elected is going.

You pick one of the polling stations closest to the school. Since it’s closest to the majority of people voting, it’s likely to have a bigger sample size to get a more accurate result from. You briefly consider heading to one of the more ‘rural’ ones as well, to see if there’s any difference in the voting pattern before remembering that there’s no real ‘rural’ areas in a town as small as the one aboard the schoolship.

After a short walk, you reach the centre closest to the school itself. After a little looking around, you find the journalist girl who you’d chatted to before about the Sensha-Do club.

“Taiga, right?” You ask as you apoproach. The girl whips around, microphone angled at you on instinct.

“That’s right! Taiga Ou! Journalist extraordinare!” She proclaims. She takes a moment to look at you and you see the recognition on her face. “Oh, Vice-Commander Hermann, great to see you again!”

“Likewise,” you nod. “What’s the election looking like?”

“Like a good story,” she chortles. “On the one hand, there’s the Isuzu-Akiyama-Takebe ticket, widely billed to a continuation of President Kadotani’s presidency. Her approval rating is sky high amongst third years, but they’re the group least likely to care about the election since they’re leaving in the a few months. On the other hand, she’s particularly unpopular amongst first years for the radical cuts to extra-curriculars to fund the Sensha-Do club. Then there’s a group of first years – the Sato-Watanabe-Kobayashi ticket who are promising to make good use of the increase in Ooarai’s budget from next year.”

“Which President Kadotani negotiated,” you point out.

“She did,” Taiga allows. “And I covered it, but that’s old news by now. The battleground is the second year, who could swing either way. They might be more inclined to vote for their peers over some first years, but there’s the distinct feeling Kadotani didn’t do much for them. There’s also the volleyball club, but between you and me, I don’t think they’ll be very successful.”

You’re about to retort that they still have a school because of her, but you bite your tongue. That information never spread beyond the Sensha-Do club, so the majority of the school is ignorant of the work that Anzu and the council have done for them.

“Say, Taiga, how much of the school has voted by now?”

“About a quarter,” she answers. “Evening is the most popular time to vote.”

>“I have a story you might be interested in…”
>“Well, I’d best get to campaigning then.”
>“Thank you for the insight, Taiga, that was enlightening.”

>“Well, I’d best get to campaigning then.”

“For the Isuzu-Akiyama-Takebe ticket, right?” She asks.

“Sure is,” you nod.

“Obviously,” Taiga nods. “It’s common knowledge how close you are to President Kadotani and her council, and the three candidates are members of the Sensha-Do club, aren’t they?”

“They sure are. I know them well enough to trust them on the student council. I’m sure the first years are great and all, but they’re an unknown quantity, know what I mean?”

“I do,” Taiga nods again. “Thank you for your time, Fritz. I must be off.”

“And thank you for yours,” you reply to her retreating form. You watch the steady trickle of schoolgirls in and out of the polling station for a moment before turning and making your way back to the fair.

As in the morning, the candidates are still out and about, chatting with the people who’s interests they are charged to serve. You scan the fair, and quickly spot Hana who literally sticks out from the crowd and make your way over to her.

“Campaigning going well?” You ask her.

“It’s certainly going,” Hana says with a small laugh. “We’ve been mostly concentrated on trying to get the third years to vote since they’re most likely to vote for us according to President Kadotani.”

“That fits with my information,” you nod. “Since the first years are more likely to vote for other first years.”

“The only wildcard is the second year,” Hana continues. “I do hope they’ll vote for us instead of the first years.”

>“Have you considered trying to convince them since they’re more likely to vote?”
>“Well, rallying a voter base you know is loyal sounds like a good idea.”

>“Have you considered trying to convince them since they’re more likely to vote?”

“Oh?” Hana’s head tilts slightly. “What do you mean by that?”

“Well, apparently, the voter turnout is lower amongst third years since who they vote for isn’t going to affect them for very long,” you explain. “Whereas the second years are affected a lot more, so they care more about the results.”

“So, the turnout is higher,” Hana nods, connecting the dots. “It makes sense logically. Where did you acquire this information?”

“From that reporter, Taiga,” you say.

“Taiga Ou,” Hana muses. “Well, she’s been nothing but cordial, and I don’t think she has a reason to lie to you, so I think we’d be safe to take her information at face value, agreed?”

“Agreed,” you nod.

“Well, in that case, I must inform the others of our shift in strategy,” she says, pulling out her phone. “Thank you, Fritz.”

“No problem,” you shrug. “Do you need any other help?”

“Aside from your vote?” Hana asks, hand to her chin. “Perhaps you could shuttle campaign materials to our volunteers? We borrowed a CV for the job, and I’m sure Mako would appreciate a break.”

“A safe bet,” you nod. A few phone calls and several minutes later, you’ve located Mako and rendezvoused to make the swap. You’re slightly surprised to see Miho with her, but she explains that Mako would drive, and she would hop out to dispense supplies from the makeshift trailer attached to the back of the CV.

It’s not as hard as you’d feared. The CV takes a little getting used to but isn’t hard to drive. Additionally, the people of Ooarai are used to tanks moving about by now, and promptly part for you to get through. The only exception is a line for the cooking club offering free samples.

You shuttle posters, brochures, and pamphlets about for about an hour before Miho suggests taking a break to vote.

>Vote for the Isuzu-Akiyama-Takebe ticket.

It’s not a hard choice. There’s only two tickets on the sheet you’d potentially vote for, and one of them doesn’t stand a chance.

You whisper an apology to Noriko as you mark a cross next to Hana’s name. It seems that volleyball becoming the office voluntary-mandatory sport for every student on the ship will have to wait.

It takes less than a minute, and after folding the ballot paper you stuff it into the box, collect your ‘I voted’ sticker, and head out where Miho is waiting.

“The Hana ticket?” She asks.

“I though Noriko was pretty convincing actually,” you say as earnestly as you can. Miho stares at you for a second as if trying to decide whether you’re serious or not.

“Your joking!” She decides after her examination.

“You sure about that?” You ask, smiling at her.

“Yes!” Miho’s grinning now. “Because the President supports Hana, and you’d do anything she says!”

“The President loves democracy, she’d support me voting for them,” you say seriously. Miho raises an eyebrow and you hold her look for a solid three seconds before both of you start snickering.

After you collect yourselves, you get back to your deliveries. The Election Day is entering its final hours, and the pace of voters, and therefore the amount of materials expended, increases with it. You’re not sure why a poster is necessary half an hour before the end of the election, but you’re paid to drive not to ask questions, so you duly do so.

You watch Miho hand the last placard to some first year that has volunteered to help the campaign, she promptly returns and collapses atop the CV.

“We’re finally done,” she groans. “I’ve been at it all day!”

>That means she didn’t get a chance to checkout the club fair, go with her.

“So that means you’ve not had much of a chance to look around the club fair, as well, right?”

“You too?” Miho asks sympathetically.

“Running errands for the boss,” you reply. Miho just nods knowingly. The two of you sit in silence for a moment before you have an idea. “Do you want to go to the fair now?”

“Most of the stalls will be closing soon,” Miho replies.

“Keyword, ‘soon’,” you point out. “We can probably still hit some of them.”

“Yeah,” she begins nodding slowly. “I suppose we can.”

Miho rolls off the tank and into the seat next to you. “Panzer Vor!”

“Aye aye, Commander,” you chuckle as you begin weaving your way towards the fair.

When you reach the fair, you leave the CV so you can walk around properly. The first club stand you encounter is the aviation club. Sometime during the day they swapped the Huey out for a helicopter you haven’t seen before. The seed money came from the Sensha-Do club, so they’re happy to tell you about their stripped down OH-58 which they use a trainer aircraft and a general errand helicopter.

After that, you head to the automotive club to see how they’re getting on.

“Hey, Commander,” Hoshino greets you with a wave as you arrive. “Having fun?”

“Enjoying some time off,” you reply. “I see you guys brought the other CV out.”

“Yep, we tricked it out to show what we could do,” Hoshino grins. “Plan was to compare it to the other one, but Isuzu’s campaign needed it so eh,” she shrugs, “it was still a massive hit though.”

“I can imagine,” Miho says as she watches it speed by. They’ve turned a nearby park into a muddy field demonstrating throughout the day. You hope they don’t get in too much trouble.

>Check out Duck team’s stand. Who’s manning it if they’re running for council?

>Let Miho decide.

“We probably have time to visit one more place,” you say, checking your watch. “Is there anywhere you want to go?”

“Not really,” she replies. “No! Wait! I want to go see what the art club is doing!”

“Art club,” you echo as you begin walking in that direction. “Interesting choice.”

“I used to draw a lot when I was a kid,” Miho says with a smile. “Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I’d kept up with it.”

“Well, I’m sure the art club would be happy to have you, we certainly pay them enough to be.”

Your joke earns you a roll of the eyes and a punch to the shoulder.

When you reach the art club, you see most of the members and prospective members crowded around a wall. The only one who isn’t is Yoshi, the more approachable member of the art club you met.

“Hermann!” She greets you with a polite smile. “Come to have a look at the great cause that your club’s money is going to?”

“We sure have,” you nod. “Mel not around to bite my head off?”

“She’s fetching more supplies,” Yoshi explains.

“For the wall?” Miho asks. You follow her gaze, and sure enough the wall is covered in paintings.

“Yeah, we thought, ‘why not do a collaborative mural?’” Yoshi explains. “The building is scheduled for demolition over the end of year holiday, so they let us go wild.”

“Wild is an understatement,” Miho murmurs back, and you can’t help but agree. There are probably over a hundred individual paintings, ranging in size from a sixth of the wall to barely visible. The content is just as varied – the largest individual piece is a headshot of Flint titled ‘SING’, and it’s surrounded by everything from crude tanks to ‘Erika waz ‘ere’.

“Impressive, huh?” Yoshi smirks. “It’s earned us more member sign ups than any other year in our history.”

“Can we draw something?” Miho asks, turning to face the girl. She doesn’t reply, instead tossing you both cans of spray paint.

>Cross out Erika’s name and put your own there.

Miho gets busy with her spray can and you do the same.

You look around and find what you’re looking for – a little nozzle attachment for the spray can. You put it on, shake the can, and get to work.

The first part of your masterpiece is a neat line through your sister’s name. It’s thin enough that you can still read her name underneath it, but thick enough you can see it’s been crossed out from a distance. With that done, you get to the main part of your masterpiece. Another shake of the can, and a moment later, your name is neatly written above Erika’s.

You step back and admire your work, great pen(spray paint)manship and no dripping paint. As you give yourself a nod, Miho steps back to admire her work as well. You look over and see a small boko sitting close to the platoon of tanks that’s been drawn by various members of your club.

“Nice work,” you say, nodding as you examine her drawing.

“Thank you!” She preens. Miho looks over at yours and giggles. “That’s going to get a reaction.”

“That’s why I do it,” you nod. You put the spray can down in a box of them and check your watch again. “That was a productive evening.”

“Definitely,” Miho nods. “The results of the election will be out soon as well.”

>Stay up and sit with the Student Council while the votes are tallied.

“Check the results with the President?” You suggest.

“Hana, Saori and Yukari are probably going to be there,” Miho says, stroking her chin. “Let’s roll!”

You turn about-face and make your way to the CV. It’s a quick trip to the bridge with the Student Council’s main office. The two of you head up, and sure enough, all six people expected to be there are present, watching a live tally of the votes on TV.

“You have a match tomorrow,” Momo says in lieu of a greeting. “The two of you should be heading to bed.”

“As should the rest of Anglerfish team,” you point out.

“I’ve already chastised them,” Momo explains. “So, I have to tell the two of you off as well. Nothing personal.”

You look at Yuzu who mouths ‘What can you do?’ You decide to just accept the telling off and put yourself down next to Yuzu.

“Why do you smell of ash?” You ask, as you get close to her. “A weird new perfume?”

“We were burning old documents,” she explains, laughing off your question. “Stuff that we won’t need anymore thanks to the change in situation.”

There’s a double meaning there you decide, but she’s obviously not said it outright for a reason, so you let it go for now.

>“So, Hana was my work successful?”

“Preliminary counting would indicate it was,” Hana replies. She’s trying to look like it’s not affecting her, but you can tell from the way her eyes are glued to the screen that it is, and understandably so. “So far we’re leading the second-year vote which is the biggest group by percentage of votes.”

“I didn’t take you for a politician, Commander!” Yukari chimes in.

“I’m not,” you reply as you make yourself comfortable. “I just end up at the right position at the right time.”

“Regardless, it looks like the expected margin of victory will be bigger than anticipated,” Momo states. “That’s good because if you get an absolute majority, the other groups can’t complain about anything.”

“They can do that if they lose?” You ask.

“If the final tally is too close, and the losing side makes enough noise then the Principal might get involved,” Anzu explains. “He’s an alright guy, but he has to be impartial.”

“I almost lost my position as Vice-President before we even started,” Yuzu adds. “Coalitions are no fun.”

The counting goes on for several hours, and you get a chance to watch the feed during that time. You come to realise that it’s actual just Taiga streaming from the school gym where the votes are being counted, making the occasional comment, or showing the occasional graph. There’s a sigh of relief and some big smiles when the count for the Isuzu-Akiyama-Takebe ticket passes 33%, then outright cheering once it reaches 50%.

The celebrations are about to begin before Momo interrupts.

“I hate to spoil the mood,” she begins, cutting through the fledgling cheers. “But all of you have a match tomorrow.”

“More like later today,” Anzu adds, looking at a clock. “We can combine the celebration parties.”

>“Yes mom.” Unfortunately, she’s right.
>“Just an hour to work it out of our systems?” Something like this DESERVES it’s own celebration.

“Mom!?” She splutters. “I’m no one’s mother, and I don’t intend to be for quite a while yet!”

“You nag a lot like mine,” Anzu chips in nonchalantly. “If it quacks like a duck…”

Momo’s about to round on Anzu, but you stand and brush yourself down. “She’s right though,” you say. “I know my crew is probably already down for the night, so I probably should be too.”

“I can’t have Ruby outperforming me,” Hana nods. “Not getting a full night’s sleep would make that possible.”

“And it would be possible if you did?” You ask, honour bound to defend your gunner in her absence, even if it’s her girlfriend.

“I suppose shall find out tomorrow,” she says with a smile.

“I suppose we will,” you say, returning it. The two of you nod to each other, before Hana turns to her crew.

“Ladies, we have a match to win,” she declares. “Shall we depart to rest?” It’s phrased like a question, but it’s really an order. The five of them say their goodbyes and file out of the room.

“I didn’t know she was so competitive,” you say.

“It helped her win the presidency,” Anzu shrugs. “At risk of sounding like Kawashima, you should probably go as well.”

“Yes, I will,” you nod.

“I’ll walk you back,” Yuzu says. You offer her your hand which she happily takes, and the two of you walk back.

It’s a relatively quiet walk. There’s not much to talk about, and you’re both content to enjoy the other’s company. She walks you to the door but stops there.

“You don’t want to come in?” You ask.

“Not smelling like a firepit,” she frowns. “Besides, if I come in, there won’t be much sleeping will there?”

“There’ll be plenty,” you protest. “I like the smell, it reminds me of…the fireplace at home?”

“I’ve been to your house. You don’t have a fireplace,” Yuzu gently reminds you, and follows it up with a kiss. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

You watch her walk down the street. As she reaches the end of it and turns, you catch her eye again and she blows you a kiss.

You make sure to catch it.

The thread’s on page eight, and the battle is probably going to be a long one. I also have work full time the rest of the week, so now’s a decent time to end it.

It’s archived here:

Give it a vote if you can. One upvote = 1 DC QM’s will to live.

I’m going to be pretty busy this month with university beginning again, so I don’t know when the next thread will be. End of the month probably. I’ll keep you updated.

Any questions or feedback, please drop it below, sorry about the lack of a tank fight, but there will be plenty next thread.

Anyways, thanks for playing, see you next time.
