You are Ushi Walker, the half-Japanese/half-American wielder of the mighty quirk “Everything is Bigger in Texas", one of U.A. High's top first-year students, excited camper-to-be, and right now a very anxious waiter!

Not in the underpaid apron-wearing way, but in the "I agreed to meet up at the mall with my friend and she's late" kind of way. You look on as your friends and classmates go have fun shopping and get ready for the upcoming training camp while you just stand on the first floor of the Kiyashi Ward Shopping Mall, waiting for your fellow American Pony to arrive.

Your prior excitement to hang out with everyone together, only to watch them all leave you behind makes the couple of minutes that have passed feel like months.

Well, not everyone. With Deku left awkwardly standing a few feet away following Uraraka's strange outburst and escape, you have some company while you loiter.

>"Bug… Am I the bug!? Was she talking about me?" Your fellow freckled student continues to whine, his head snapping back and forth to stare at where Uraraka vanished into the crowd. You briefly worry about his neck.

Having nothing better to do, you approach the short boy, intent on at least trying to do some good while you stick around.

"Nah." You remark, walking up to him from the side and throwing an arm over his shoulders, giving him a bit of a slap on the arm. "Don't you go comparin' yourself to a bug!"

>"I wasn't, but Uraraka-" He tries to explain his nonsense to you, but you cut it short.

“Nope! Not havin’ it. Ain't goin' down that rabbit hole." You interrupt, taking a second to look him over and formulate a coherent response. You also contemplate what type of shop could sell white t-shirts with simple black text saying “t-shirt” on them and possibly stay open.

“Ah told ya before it ain’t right, making people out to be animals! And that goes double for yerself, ya hear?” With your previous talks with Iida still fresh in your mind, you’re starting to get used to wrapping your chastising up in words of encouragement.

You wonder if this is how Momma feels....

"Besides, Ah don't think she was talkin' bout you anyway." You point out, feeling weird to be the one to do it. When it comes to Deku and Uraraka, they seem to get denser than even you for anything related to the other. You don’t really get it. "If anythin’ you are more like a bun, hun."

>"...As in a rabbit or bread?" He asks you before he dives into another spell of muttering, holding his chin and rhythmically tapping his jaw. Him having to do something with his hands as he rambles seems new to you. "The second simile doesn't really make any sense, but you just said not to compare people and animals. But then again, Walker's prone to talking about bread. On the other hand, she is also known to say things she doesn’t-”

>"EITHER way," You interrupt again before he says something he’d regret. Then you pull him a bit closer into one of your patented half hugs. "From where Ah’m standin’ Ah'd like to just… er, give ya a pat on top and send you on your way, silly!"

You look down again at your strong yet oh-so-meek schoolmate as he stares off into the crowd in confusion at your comments. You aren’t sure if you should feel proud for keeping your boot out of your mouth just now… or ashamed for almost admitting how pinnable he looks to you.

You haven’t even been to the Tiger Den in over a week… Where did that idea come from?

>"Oooooh, cool! You’re from U.A. right? Do you guys do autographs?”

“See? What’d I tell ya!” You encourage Deku as you give a friendly wave back at the shopper in a black hoodie you glimpse behind you. “No good reason to think yourself a bug when people look up to ya like that! Hell, the last time someone called me something like that wa-”

The fan is upon you before you even realize he had approached, throwing his arms around both of your necks and squishing himself between the two of you.

>"You’re the one that got spectacularly wrecked at the Sports Festival! What a beating! It took breaking the arena in half to get you to stay down! And you, you WON it! Must be my lucky day…”

It’s been so long since someone grabbed you out of nowhere, that you didn’t consider the possibility until his arm was already over your shoulder. Old instincts die hard though as that uncomfortable tingle in your chest returns and your breathing speeds up. He’s way too close.

"H-hey bud… Mind giving us a bit of space?" You politely try to get him to back off.

Why does the first handsy fan you meet have to smell like a moth infested closet?

>Say, you ran into that Hero Killer too, ya? While you were showing up on TV with that pro hero in Yokkaichi… You lot are just something else!" The man rambles on, his arm still firmly pressed against your neck as if you hadn't said a word.

>”Y-you sure do know a lot about us…” Deku seems unsettled as well, his eyes shifting between looking at you, the ground, and trying to peer over his shoulder at your ever creepier admirer.

>”With all the stuff you’ve done, you have to think that something special’s helped you along the way, right?! I mean, after all, to meet you both again in a place like this…"

Wait, again?

It all falls into place as you feel his fingers wrap around your neck, pressing above and below your larynx, his middle finger hovering beside them. If you didn’t know any better, you'd have thought he was about to try to shrink or enlarge you.

But you do know better. By way of dark, fiery dreams and memories of that first field trip to the USJ.

And what you thought before was the discomfort of having your personal space invaded, you now realize is the eerie, harrowing energy of something far more threatening. An emitter quirk. Pulsing, straining to activate with the briefest touch. And so very close.

Too close to be mistaken.

>”It must be something like fate, huh Midoriya? Or destiny! What do you think, Walker?”

You wish you could say that you recalled his name in kind the moment he mentioned yours. The number of hits to your noggin may have played a part… But you think you’d be forgiven for having your mind go blank as you have the modern equivalent of a knife to your neck.

Fortunately, your classmate and co-panicker has you covered.

>"...Shigaraki Tomura.” The green haired boy slowly utters under his breath. Loud enough for you to hear, but far too softly for anyone to take notice over the background noises of chatter and laughter.

>"Good, keep it quiet. As far as anyone watching knows, we are just three pals huddled up. Gossiping and reminiscing. Nothing to see here." Shigaraki mutters back in kind.

Still slumped over you both, he presses on your shoulders and tries to have you all start walking. But your boot squeaks in protest as your frozen feet betray you and slide on the polished floor. By the warm air that brushes against your cheek after, you think he’s turned to look directly at you. You haven’t felt like looking back (or doing anything else with your head) since you became aware of his grip.

>"Easy now and follow along. And don't start hyperventilating either. We’re just going to have, Uhm… a chat."

"Sure, just chattin'..." You mutter, doing what you think to be a pretty good job at keeping your breathing in check and your gait inconspicuous. If there's anything that comes naturally to you, it's looking like nothing's wrong. "Is that why you're ready to… to kill us? Ah know our kind of quirk. The moment that fifth finger makes contact we'll be slumped over and writhin' on the ground."

>"No, you'd be dead before you hit the floor. And nothing but dust in a matter of seconds." Shigaraki clarifies with the matter-of-fact tone of someone telling the time. "So don’t try anything funny. Neither of you."

>"Y-you can't expect to get away with that. Not here in the open. Heroes would come and catch you!" Deku points out, silently making you hope for a pro hero to pass by and notice your predicament.

Sadly, you have no such luck.
>>
>"You are right, I don't, but I won't have to." He says, the slight shifting of the damp palm around your neck making you think he might have shrugged. "Even if either of you were willing to throw away not only your own life but that of the other to get back at me, you'd be rather poor heroes if you didn't consider all these people around us. All of them... with quirks of their own, but none of them giving a gram of thought to how easy it'd be for anyone amongst them to commit an atrocity at any given time… After you two, I could easily reach twenty before the crowd disperses…and over thirty before the heroes finally catch me… Are you sure you’d rather not talk?"

His threat is clear. It's not only your life that you’d be risking if you try to fend him off or bring attention to yourselves. But also the families on a weekend outing, the kids looking for cool stuff to spend their allowances on and the young couples holding hands. All of their blood would be on your hands if you fucked this up.

>"What... What do you want to talk about?" Deku asks as he turns to look at you with pleading eyes, asking you to play along as well.

>"...What's eatin' ya?" You grumble, showing you are willing to go along with this if nothing else.

>"Good call." He says with a dry chuckle. "Come on, let's find somewhere to sit… This might take a while."

It's awful how familiar it feels, walking around with clammy fingers on your skin, hoping that no one would notice anything and get you in trouble, yet at the same time hoping that someone would come and intervene.

After another horribly long minute, you reach a nearby bench, within view of the busy information kiosk. The same one where you looked over the fliers for the Tiger den and a personal safety course all those moons ago… the irony of the latter one at present makes you sort of queasy.

>"What normally eats me is a smoldering hate towards everyone and everything." Shigaraki admits, and it's not hard to believe. "But what I hate the most right now is the Hero Killer and everyone's obsession with that slack-jawed bastard. They make him out to be the face of the League of Villains, even though we hated each other. Did you know that?"

>"So all that hullabaloo in the press was false?" You ask, a spark of curiosity squeaking out from the bundle of nerves you are currently embodying.

>"The League's attack on your school, the Nomu unleashed on Hosu's streets… All overshadowed by a blood-drunk maniac with a rag and a drawer-full of knives strapped to his body." Shigaraki posits. You don’t have to see him to glean the bitterness and frustration that suffuse his words. "For all the fear he spread amongst heroes… it was all just moralist grandstanding. In the end, all he did was kill those he hated as well..."

You can feel his bitten nails dig into your skin as he trails off. Right before he wrenched your neck to look inward towards him and Deku.

>"So! Why don't you lend me your thoughts, kids! Tell me, what's the big difference?" He asks with a wide ugly smile, his teeth framed by dry, cracked and scarred lips.

While your breathing and expression may be under control, you are anything but. If not for the mix of adrenaline and sheer determination helping you stay still and alert, it'd be more than just your hands trembling without restraint.

“Folks are thinkin’ the way things are, if there's no change to the status quo with heroes wanting fame n‘ glory, ta beat up the bad guy instead ‘a changing things fer the better and really helping and inspiring hope, world’ll keep churnin’ out the same kinda problems, same prejudices, and the same kinda villains. I feel like this is in line with why she wants to be a hero, and the points she would focus on. Also congrats on not being dead Mic.

As someone who still has concerns surrounding the prospect of talking her way out of a paper bag, the waterfall of cold sweat forming at the small of your back is fairly unsurprising.

Then again, you doubt any debate team nerd would fare much better with their neck literally on the line.

It hurts, training so much only to be put into a situation you can't fight your way out of. It's terrifying, frustrating… and maddening. Shigaraki is right there, and you can’t do a damn thing about it.

With your newly forced and semi-painful posture allowing you to see both Deku and… Him, you realize that Deku isn't having it any easier, sweating up a storm as well. Worryingly, he appears much closer to another one of his muttering sessions than being prepared to give a clever answer.

And Shigaraki's already looking mighty annoyed with the lack of response thus far. At least that terrible, horrible smile is gone.

While you can't quite put all your fears behind you and talk like nothing's actually happening, you sure as hell can give him a piece of your mind, especially now that he's asking for it.

"Ya wanna hear what Ah think 'bout this? Why people don't seem to care 'bout y'all?" You start, blowing a puff of steam out of your nose in a pointless yet cathartic gesture of defiance. “Ah think it's 'cause most people care about the "why" as much as the "what". And they agreed with Stain... a bit.”

You pause momentarily, eyeing Shigaraki for any sign that he finds what your saying unimportant or worse, agitating. You can’t believe you're opening up to him of all people.

>"That's about it, I-i think." Deku adds, joining the conversation with as much of a nod as his constrained neck allows. "I was there in the USJ and it was terrifying, but I still don't know why you attacked us like y-you did. I met the Hero Killer, and while he was no less a terrifying murderer… I could see what he stood f-for, even if I can't agree with any of it."

“...But lots of us did. In-part, Ah mean. Still do..." You respond, puzzling the green-haired boy, but you shake your head at him. As much as you can, that is. "Ah can't say I agree with the bloody-rags wearin', hero-stabbin' business. Dude was a few cards short of a deck, no doubtin’ it. But Ah can see what he pointed out, how not every hero deserves the title. Because it's true."

While a particular, unnerving hero of flame comes to mind as you say it, you know he's not the only one doing it with motives far removed from anything virtuous or altruistic.

>"I don't think the reasons people have to help those who need it matter, but it did to him…" Deku says clearly trying to not contradict you in front of the villain. "And everyone who heard him could tell he truly believed in his cause."

"People can do a lot of harm chasing fame, riches or numbers, even if the number is Cases Solved." You tell him, not daring to go further to respect your friend's privacy.

>"How can you be telling the truth if you don’t even agree, huh? It’d be a better final score if you gave me an usable answer, get it?" Shigaraki demands. If his dry tone wasn't enough to show his impatience, his tightening grip and his nails digging into your neck made it clear.

This time, Deku is faster on the draw.

>"Don't you see? W-We do agree." He tells the maniac between you. "He believed fully in his cause, and his cause draws people in. Random acts of destruction, causing terror for fun or trying to kill kids to kill time… That doesn't work."

"What you did might get you a few hundred true crime groupies when you are six feet under." You continue, gladly pointing out Shigaraki's previous incompetence. "He was trying to do something, to permanently change the world in his own way. He walked his path, a twisted one, proudly and true..."

You then turn to face him, only him. To stare at his bloodshot eyes even as the skin around your throat goes taut in his clutches.

"His conviction, murderous as it was, is contagious. Viral, and that’s no metaphor." You rip into him. "Your apathy is contagious as well, but it can bounce back at you. So don't be surprised that they have already forgotten about you... Thats the difference."

>"He wanted All Might to stop him, or maybe someone like him, you know? Stain, I mean." Deku points out. "Even if I can't wrap my head around how he decided that murder was the answer, I can see why he would want a world protected only by heroes like him."

>"...It always goes back to All Might, doesn't it?" Shigaraki asks with a shaky laugh, but doesn't wait for an answer. "Of course, of course… It explains everything. It's why everyone always brings him up. Him and his damn smile, promising to be the solution to everyone's problems! To save every single moron in trouble! How can they not be happy!?

Once more, his grasp around your neck tightens, now making it hard to breathe. But what can you do, other than wheeze and keep your teary eyes from outright crying? The moment your instinct takes over and your hands try to reach your neck, he turns to face you, his horrid smile back on his face.

>Hey now! Don't make me kill you and everyone else here now, we are almost done!" Shigaraki admonishes you, making you slowly lower your hands to your lap again. "That's better… I gotta thank you, you know? Both of you! It's so simple, really… I feel kinda dumb for not seeing it before… I know what I must do now-

>"Therr you are! Ushi, Midoriya… and friend?" Pony's jovial, yet worried voice interrupts him as she approaches you, looking around, dressed for a casual afternoon of shopping save for a messenger bag strapped to her back. She did say something about doing some deliveries, didn't she? "We need to go, the police are gathering at the entrances! I heard something about a villain at large in here… I think they are waiting for a hero to arrive."

>"Oh no. That's terrible! I guess I should be going then, my friends!" Shigaraki responds, back in the same saccharine infused tone he used when he approached you, letting go of both of you and standing up, walking up to Pony and giving her a pat on the back before starting to walk away. "Thanks for the warning, it sure pays to stay alert! And you two better not try to follow me, the villain might get you!~"

You see Pony start to turn around, probably to say goodbye to your supposed friend when she notices you and Deku both holding your throats and gasping for air amidst bouts of coughing.

>"...Wait. Shigaraki…" Deku calls out for the leaving villain, barely able to cough out a working sentence. "All For One… What's he want?"

>"Don't know, don't care, and you shouldn't either. Worry about our next get-together instead, cuz I promise I won't just let you go next time." Shigaraki says, quickly dropping the act as he blends into the crowd, another hoodie amongst many.

>"<That… That was no friend… Was it?>" Pony asks, her normally cheery tone replaced by a tense, nervous one to match her clamped tail. "<Are yo- Uh!?>"

>"Drop the bag!" Deku suddenly yells before falling into another bout of coughing.

It takes you a second to notice why… Then a pile of envelopes falls onto the floor, spilling from Pony's bag.

"D- HAKK!" You try to warn your friend before simply leaping to your feet, breaking the clasp over her chest and tossing the bag by its strap into the pile of papers.

>"What are you-!? Oh." Pony starts to complain before the bag and the papers all turn to gray dust, as if burned into ash by some invisible flame. You didn't think her eyes could get any bigger, but they certainly have now. "Oh no…"
>>
It's just a little funny, how doing that made you feel just a little bit better. Just being able to do something, instead of waiting at a madman's mercy.

It was a nice jolt of adrenaline, but it doesn't last. You only manage to take a few steps back before falling back on the same damn bench, next to your classmate.

Definitely this one if doing helpful things is keeping Ushi's nerves in check. Need to keep it together for both our companions and because this guy can still do damage if we bring attention to him just as he leaves.

Adding on to this, maybe ask Pony if she's okay too once we check up on Deku. She came closer to dying, after all.

Did all of Pony’s money just get disintegrated? Hopefully the mall carries villain insurance that’ll cover that…

So canon is still on track, Shigaraki has still got a bee up his ass for All Might and he still got away. On the other hand we’ve shown both him and Deku that we’re skeptical of heroes and hero society itself. This is almost certainly going to end with Shigaraki trying to grab us as an ally or as nomu fodder, but I’m not sure how Deku’s going to revise his opinion of us.

Didn't Deku and Iyda talk with Shoto in the aftermath, pretty sure that was the time he brought up his family situation. So they know at least.

Did something change in quest, because I don’t Iida’s ever learned about Shoto’s situation and Deku learned about Shoto at the Sports Festival, not at the hospital. What I’m trying to say that Deku probably thought that our issues were just a personal grudge against one hero, this reveals that we have issues with the system itself, which he didn’t know about, and how that affects someone who wholeheartedly believes in the system /and/ fought against the guy we just raised up as someone who had good ideas.
>>
>>4994551
No, you're right. I think that Anon is misremembering. Ushi really has had a bad time with a good couple heroes hasn't she? First with Endeavor threatening her momma and using her to get to Shoto and then Power Loader bribing her with an NDA for his own negligence. There's also the hero teacher's staged attacks, the second one involving her momma again but in a life and death situation. Thank God Midnight and Edgeshot have been nothing less than kind, understanding, and downright inspirational or I'd really be worried.

Also, I wonder what happened to Uraraka in this. If I remember right, in canon she looks back down at Deku because she's thinking of apologizing for running off like she did. Did she fuck off because she saw Ushi grabbing him in a half hug and giving him a pat? We're really making it hard for her to befriend us, aren't we?

Having lost track of your attacker in the flow of people beginning to stream out of the mall, you feel like screaming in frustration. Breaking down and bursting into tears with fright. Or merely kicking the bench until it or your leg breaks, still enraged at your impotence.

Isn't that why you train with every fiber of your being? To never be helpless? To never be forced into such situations again?

All those feelings and more, raging inside you like a storm in a bottle, about to burst, about to break…

But then you look to your right and see Deku massaging his throat, trying to avoid the three bruises forming where Shigaraki's thumb, index and ring fingers threatened to dig into his flesh. His pained expression gives rise to a different instinct that quickly eclipses your ire.

And just like that, you put a cork in that bottle and leave it aside. Your inner storm can wait.

"Hey, Deku? cough You holdin' up okay?" You ask, scooting closer to your classmate, keeping your breathing shallow to minimize your own pain. It's not hard to imagine your neck looking the same as his, it certainly feels the part. At least you can breathe and talk. It's fine. "...Sugah?"

Holding his neck still and with tears and sweat running down his face, Deku continues to stare at the floor with a glazed-over look to him. Given the circumstances, it's not surprising that he might be in shock.

Doesn’t stop your concern from growing though. You scoot even closer, slowly bringing your hands up to his shirt from the sides so as not to scare him.

"Midoriya?" You ask softly, pulling on his collar to get his attention. "You alright?"

>"Huh!?" The boy almost jumps off his seat when he notices you, leaning back bewildered. "Oh, Walker- I, Yes?... I-I think so at least?"

"You're not lookin' so hot right now, he didn’t break anythin' did he?" You propose, getting a halfhearted shake in response. "Well if yer neck ain't busted, and you feel well enough to talk, what’s got ya frozen?"

You keep hold of his upper body, and close at that. Whether it's an attempt to comfort him or wanting his presence to comfort yourself as you start to come down from the incident, you really don’t know.

>"I just keep going over it in my head. How he… got us. If we weren’t… Could I have spotted him? Should I have thrown him off from the start?? Was there anything I could have done differently?" He muses somberly, returning his gaze to the floor before closing his eyes in thought. "Had I been more alert, maybe I could have stopp-"

"Ah-I can’t say, Deku…” You interrupt him, racking your brain for something to lure your friend away from the pit of self-blame he was plodding towards. Once again, your recent conversations with Iida are coming in mighty handy.

Just when will these boys learn that they can’t regret things outside of their control?

That's when a funny thought comes to your mind.

"Heh, but Ah'll be damned. Turns out even the sillier lessons at U.A. seem to have a point."

>"You mean the USJ Ambush with the disguised All Might? Yeah, this is the kind of thing it was meant to prepare us for." The cynicism gets a short lived scowl out of you.

"Ah was thinkin' more the practical exam's rules, actually. If you can't beat the villain, don't risk it and get help? Dunno how the police were notified, but Ah think we passed life’s extra credit exam here."

You look up at all the people on the higher floors queuing to ride down the escalators to get to the exits. Parents who are anxious to keep their families together, kids agitated by the interruption to their fun, and couples reaffirming their grasp on one another.

Despite all the visible anxiety, the evacuation seems to be running as smoothly as you'd expect from people used to hurrying away from villain encounters and letting the heroes deal with them. How different the orderly lines would have looked if Shigaraki had felt trapped…

It's a grisly image, and one you are glad to leave to your imagination. As for reality ...well, not the ending you nor Deku wanted… but it's the one that kept everyone safe.

Then you feel his hand grab your shoulder. Even seeing him do it, it takes no small amount of self control to not pull away after what just happened.

>"Hold still, you’re bleeding." Deku says, tapping you to keep your chin up while digging through his pockets with his other hand for a folded napkin from some restaurant.

It doesn't really hurt much, and you are fairly sure any cut in that area that hasn't bled you dry already isn't really a concern. You are about to point that out to him, but a quick look over at his expression stops you.

Determined but kind, focused yet smiling. A far cry from where he was a moment ago.

You don't need help cleaning surface wounds, but you get the feeling he needed to help. Just as you did.

After he finishes his blotting, he goes back into the tank, deep in thought… But with a subtle tug at the corners of his mouth. You don't doubt it won't be as easy for the next villain to try something like this.

Feeling like that was settled...for now, you immediately turn back and approach your pal Pony, who’s scooping her dust into a plastic bag. You also get the sense that the moment you stop talking, your mind is also going to take a dive into the dark depths of what-ifs and never-weres. Any delay to that would be just dandy.

"Hey, Pony… How did you find us?" You start, then realize the more peculiar part of her story. "Or even get in, if there's cops blocking the doors?"

>"Tin. I snuck in." She dully answers, scooping her dust.

"Tin?" You ask, confused but glad… then you do a double take. "Wait, you snuck in? With your clip-clop hooves and jumbo horns? You are kinda hard to miss, ya know?"

>"I thought you called some ago, but it was Tin. Told me there was a villain around and I showld warn you from distance. 'Arm's reach’." Pony blandly explains, the droning cadence robbing her slurred Japanese of it's normal cheer. "And I just… pranced in. People let you get away with a lot if you just… flutter your eyelids and do the whole puppy eyes routine."

She illustrates her last point by turning around and motions at her huge, misty eyes. If the barely held back tears didn't make her shock clear, the fact that her large eyes were mostly pupils would.

"...Are you okay, sugarcube?" You ask her. It's obvious she's not, she almost died… But she's trying to put on a brave face, and you can respect that. "No one will judge ya if ya ain't."

>"Yep, I'm fine." She says, briefly forcing a smile, but continuing to drone on. "You had it worse and are okay. I-i can deal."

"This is also like the third time sumthin' like this has happened to me." You point out, not sure how many times the unwarned crises your teachers have also put you through should be counted.

>"...The first time? What did you do?" Pony asks, a bit of curiosity giving some color back to her voice. Along with what sounds like the prelude to sobs.

"It was bad. Ah lost half a horn and passed out. Woke up and cried with my Momma" You simply state while pointing up at your right horn. Even months later, you can still smell yourself burning sometimes. "Ah'd say you are doing pretty well."

Sure, the situation was completely different and you passed out from exhaustion, but you aren't above putting yourself down a notch to help a friend keep it together.

And seeing her eyes return to… her normal, you are sure you would do it again.

>"Thanks… I just… I gotta get used to this, right?" She asks with an unashamed snort at the end. "Part of the job and all."

I sure hope not! is what you want to say… But she's right. It shouldn't happen to first year students, but as All Might said, these kinds of things do happen and you need to be ready.

"...Yeah." You admit, blowing a puff of steam out of your nose in tandem.

You stay by her side and support her as well as you can before the others arrive, helping with the last of the dust and scraping the floor a bit with your boots and horseshoes.

It only takes a couple more minutes before your friends rush to and find you at the bench in the middle of the shopping mall. First Uraraka, then Iida, then the rest. Only a few more beyond that pass before dozens of police officers and a handful of heroes you had never seen before start filing in from all the entrances. Obviously in search of Shigaraki but also guiding the last stragglers of the evacuation.

>"Are you okay!?" Is the loudest and most repeated question, but a few others stand out.

>"My goodness, a-are you hurt?" Asks Momo, slowly but steadily approaching and looking you up and down. She pales when she sees your bruised, injured neck. "Did he try anything… unseemly?"

>"Who do I complain aboot this?" Pony softly wonders, holding up her bag full of... bag.

>"W-what were you two doing?" Is Uraraka's softly asked question.

With the shopping mall now nigh empty, you know time is short before the police take full control, make your friends disperse, and have you begin to pass on the details of the incident and your injuries.

You hate to evoke such worry amongst your friends, yet you can't help but be immensely glad to have so many of them worried about your wellbeing. A mere year ago, only your family did.

Wait.

Everyone here can see you are alive n’ kicking. However, your Momma isn’t and she is not going to like most of what you have to tell her. Letting Tin know that its efforts were not in vain seems like a good idea as well. Shoto also might want to know about the ‘fun’ he missed out on here at the mall.

With the police already forming a perimeter around you, you know it'll be a matter of minutes before you’ll be taken aside by them. So you try to rapid fire reassurances out to everyone present, first responders included, as you try to think up what to send to achieve the same result with instant messages.

"Ah'm fine officer, really, Ah don't need any help right now, you continue getting everyone to safety!" You tell a confused looking policewoman, not even letting her finish her question before cutting her off and casually saluting at her until she backs away. It wasn't intentional, you just don't know what else to say. And have little time to say it.

Then you turn your frayed focus on your classmates.

“Ah’m fine Momo, it’s fine." You say, addressing first your ponytailed friend, then shifting to address Uraraka beside her. "We told Shigaraki what he wanted to hear and then he bailed.”

>“What did he want to hear?...” Concern remained etched across the taller girl’s face.

>“That’s not what I meant…” The round-faced one grumbles.

But by that point you’ve already moved on to answering your other ponytail-less friend. Well, not with one on her head at least.

“Just tell the police what you lost when we give our depositions, Pony. They’ll help you try an’ file a claim. Ah hope it wasn’t anything’ sentimental… and thanks, ‘fer stickin’ yer neck out for me.” You tell her as you awkwardly pat yourself over, looking for your phone.

>”Give our <What>?!” She responds, apparently aghast. You repeat the word in English and you watch comprehension wash over her. “Oooh, okay. Well, the bag was not true special but I did think was comfy and liked it… I’m just, glad you weren’t hurt. As in serious like! I’ll need to ask about other parcels through…”

You give her an affirming nod as she walks off to a nearby officer, giving you the opportunity to pull out your phone and get to writing.

Navigating through your phone's menus first required you to swipe away several dozen silent notifications Tin had sent earlier somehow. While the sentiment is appreciated, each once-warning is now a bothersome reminder of your last ordeal.
>>
With little time to write a good in-depth message explaining the whole situation to each of them and knowing you'll see them all soon anyway, you set out to compose a quick, barebones message. Hopefully it contains enough details to avoid any misunderstandings, while being vague enough to be sent to all three of Momma, Shoto, and Tin without being particularly awkward.

"A villain assaulted me and Midoriya at the mall. We are okay and about to give our depositions. We're headed to the station, see you soon!" You quickly type, fingers dancing across the screen as fast as you can manage, only stopping to delete the few typos your still slightly shaky hands inserted.

...Yeah you’ve got this. Satisfied with an adequately done message, you return your phone to your pocket and await for their responses or the police, whichever comes first.

It just so happens that your pocket becomes a very localized earthquake machine just as the police approach with a meaningful stride. Show time.

>"Walker Ushi? I am Officer Tanaka." A young dark haired man in uniform says as he approaches you, holding a small, shiny metal box in his hands. Either a camera or a recorder, you assume. "We have some questions we need you to answer, if you would. Both to check your well being and to help with the ongoing investigation."

“Howdy officer. And before you ask, Ah'm am still doing okay. Shaken up a bit but nothin’ Ah can’t handle.” You reemphasize, hiding your agitation at the timing. You won’t be able to check your phone for a while now. Nevertheless, you don’t take it out on Officer Tanaka or blame the other who asked before. They are just following protocol, just as you learned in UA.

While it was the main topic of one of All Might's classes, both Midnight and Snipe also made convincing arguments for going out of your way to maintain an amicable relationship with local law enforcement. Having friends in the force reduces the paperwork your office needs to fill. Paperwork that will become a daily occurrence.

Not only that, but your incident reports and what they think of you is reviewed by by the Hero Public Safety Commission. Thus your reputation with them affects your base income and that's without counting on how all three teachers mentioned incidents that required the police to simply trust them for their plans to work being a common occurrence.

>"...Even so, I'm afraid I must ask you for your cooperation at this time." Officer Tanaka continues, rubbing the back of his neck. "To begin, I will need a couple pictures of the injuries on-site before we make record of them at the station. Are you alright with that?"

"...What if Ah’m not?" You ask, tilting your head to the left in curiosity, your bruised neck making you wince in pain.

>"I'd… have to call the detective." He says, holding both of his hands in front of his face and inhaling rather sharply. "He would see what to do."

"Here." You tell him, pulling your hair away to give him a clear shot. No point in letting your curiosity make anyone's job harder.

>"Thank you." He says after a couple clicks of his small camera, storing it on his shirt pocket and pulling out a nearly identical item, holding it between the two of you. "Now, please describe to me what happened here today. Don't worry about explanations, there'll be time for questions later, just go over the sequence of events for the archive."

"Just like that, huh? Well, Ah was tellin' mah pal Deku...er Midoriya I mean, that he ain't no bug…" You recount the events to him, trying to cooperate earnestly.

And just like that, you are totally engrossed in the efforts of the police. You don’t even notice when they herded your friends who weren’t involved out of the mall.

While it's not a nice feeling to recall how you were manhandled and almost unmade, it wasn't too long a tale to spin. Nor too hard to answer truthfully when Officer Tanaka and his colleagues requested clarification on certain details.

...Which would have been a relief if you only had to do it once. Instead, the ordeal included being taken to an unmarked police station along with Deku and Pony to do it all again. This time, each of you are to be interviewed by a different officer. Well, Deku and you, at least. Having only arrived at the very end, the whole process was a lot less involved but still time consuming for Pony.

As you were driven across town under guard, you wondered if the police would be able to do much if the League popped out of nowhere again. Luckily, they have proven fairly bad at assassinations in the past.

"So… Who are you again?" You now ask the cat-headed man sitting opposite of you, at the other side of the table in the cold interrogation room.

>"Tamakawa Sansa, Officer." He calmly answers, organizing a stack of papers on the table. "I'm here to question you on the day's events."

"And where is 'here'?" You continue, a bit uneasy with the idea of an unmarked police station.

>"This would be the provisional quarters of the taskforce." He answers, then looks up from his papers and raises a finger. "Before you ask, the purpose of the taskforce is to keep track of and investigate the League of Villain's activity."

"Right, right... " You nod along for a second, before tilting your head left again, this time with a giggle. "But, uh… Aren't you supposed to be questioning me, not the other way around?"

>"Well, yes. But you just went through such a harrowing experience… I figured it would be better if no one told you what to do for a minute." The fuzzy officer agrees, looking up from the papers again to smile at you. At least you think it's a smile. "While I'll have to ask you some potentially uncomfortable questions, I'm not here to prolong your discomfort. You may start when ready, I'll wait."

...You can't argue with that, not being tossed around anymore did make you feel better, and having a minute to gather your wits helps too.

With a clearer head you try to recall all the useful information for the investigation, but you can't come up with anything new despite being in that room, answering questions for hours. A man in a hoodie is hard to pin down, no matter how bad his skin, how cracked his lips, nor how awful his clothes smell. You rack your brain to try and remember a new detail, something that would help get Shigaraki to Tartarus or failing that, hell.

But no. Other than confirming that his organization still isn't very organized, that he still seemed to be looking for new reasons to hate All Might and that he still plans to murder everyone in his way, you aren't able to help them much, except by adding a couple more charges to the list.

>"Hmm… If there's nothing more to add, I'd like to thank you for your time. Allow me to get the door for you." Officer Tamakawa says, the bell on his neck making no noise as he moves. With the handle in his grasp, he stops. "Before you can leave, though, let me confirm one last thing. Nothing, and I repeat, nothing of what happened today is your fault, understood?"

"Of course, sir." You slowly nod, holding your tongue. If you held yourself responsible for every time a creep got his hands on you, you wouldn't be here at all. "Can Ah go home now?"

>"I'm afraid that's not possible yet." The cat-faced officer tells you as he walks into the hall, motioning for you to follow him. "You'll need to wait for your friends to be done too, then for your guardian to come for you. Even then, I don't doubt all of you will be escorted back home by a patrol."

As you follow Tamakawa back to the first room of the station, you can't help but feel like a let down for being the first to be done and having to wait.

However, Deku doesn't take much longer than you to return, accompanied by an officer in semi-formal attire.

>"Any luck on your end, Sansa?" The officer besides Deku asks, an oddly serene smile on his face. You’d be put off by it in this circumstance if it weren’t for it being so...well, comforting. It reminds you of someone...

>"Everyone survived with minor injuries at worst, sir." Officer Tamakawa answers with a small shrug. "I'd call that luck."

>"I'd chalk it up to cooler heads prevailing." The other officer says, patting Deku on the back. "All that's left is waiting for your rides to arrive."

"Maybe we can take a walk 'round and talk now." You suggest, looking at your classmate and raising an eyebrow. "Well, it doesn't have to be now, but what Ah’m trying to get at is ya can't just blurt out things like that 'n' expect me not to ask what you meant."

The green-haired boy looks confused for a second, but doesn't manage to answer before someone interjects.

>"Hmm… Good thing you don't need to do it now then. I think someone wants to talk with you, young Midoriya. They are waiting outside." The fully-human looking officer tells you before starting to walk to the door, Deku in tow.

>"Uhm, perhaps another day, Walker?" Deku offers, and you begrudgingly nod, a toot of steam coming out of your nose.

It's nothing against him, but you are tired. Tired of waiting, tired of not being allowed to do what you want, tired in general.

At least you don't have to wait much, as a large woman enters the police station, crouching to go through the door.

>"Heya Ushi, hun.." Your momma says as she spots you, walking up to you and picking you up like a stuffed animal. "Oh, Your poor neck…"

You are beyond being embarrassed at this point, and judging by her teary eyes, she needs to hold you even more than you need the hug.

"Ah'm fi-!" You try to argue as she simultaneously hugs the air out of your lungs and smothers you. "Please... calm down. Ah'm really fine."

>"Let's… go home, hun," She says, grabbing your hand and turning around, pulling you along. "I'll… get you a n-nice dinner a-and… a cream f-for those bruises and… and…"

It doesn't take a genius to see how worried and distraught she is, with the uncharacteristic stammering and barely kept-in-line tears.

...At least she smells sober?

>What do you do?

>[She needs rest, and so do you. "...Yeah. Let's go." (Skip to next day)]
>[You need rest, true, but not badly enough to leave a friend waiting. Call Shoto when you get home. "Howdy, suga..."(Anything to say?)]

We need Angus to act adorable and heal Pony and Ushi's weary hearts. Maybe teach him some English and hug the shit out of him to get both their minds off today's happenings. It's about time Pony and Ushi bake something together too.

Well, it's usually 1 per day, but life's been hectic lately and thus, progress slow.

The fact that now my ISP is banned from posting pictures is another issue I'll have to deal with before next update, too.

That's fair, I find the bits where Ushi makes her momma worry heart wrenching. I can't even begin to imagine what Pa feels when he hears half this stuff but is too far away to even comfort his little girl properly. I feel like he'd be a lot like Ushi in that he likes to do things face to face.

You are mentally fatigued in all the ways you can count. Hell, if you were to linger in Momma's embrace, you aren't sure you wouldn't just fall asleep. It’s not quite the usual wrung out state like after training, but a part of you still just feels like giving up on this trainwreck of a day and trying again come morning.

And there's nothing you want more than to walk out to the car, return to the safety of your little home-in-Japan and unwind in whatever way you can. But something doesn’t sit right with you... and once you get a handle on it, makes you stop at the door.

>"Come on hun, don't stand in doorways. That's how you get folks stepping on your tail..." Your mom warns you, not quite managing to giggle at her own quip.

”Sorry Momma, but uh… Ah think we have to wait a bit.” You argue, digging your heels in and refusing to move. Even when she tries to lead you forwards with a gentle but assertive grip on your shoulder.

>"...Ushi. I know you’ve had a long day, and I know you feel like you are responsible for all sorts of things with what you do at school, and it makes me proud to see you try so hard to go above and beyond… But now is not the time. Please, leave the hero aside for now. Just be my daughter, m-my little calf...and let's go home." Momma sputters out while staring out into the city streets, clearly forcing herself to not look down at you as she responds. Her voice breaks up more and more as she speaks and her tail slowly whips in wide distressed arcs. "L-let the police deal with it. Please...I just want to keep you safe whi-"

“-Momma…<Please, just look at me.>” You turn to her, still standing in the doorway. The automatic doors start to object in the usual fashion but you don’t pay them any attention. The sight of Momma’s barely contained, tear-filled eyes makes your gut churn with guilt for making her stay any longer, but nonetheless you keep still. “It's not about being a hero, not now. It’s about... Pony. Ah can't just leave her alone here."

>"Ushi… Hun, it's nice of you to think of your friend like that, but times like this are what family's for." Momma soflty replies after a moment's pause. "Let her folks manage this, it'll be better for all."

"She ain't got no one! On this continent anyways... Her family's back in America." You start, then quickly amend your point when you see your mother's eyes widen, all the while feeling the tears starting to pool in your own. "Ah just can't leave her out to dry after she stuck her head out for us."

At this point any hope of containing your Momma’s bawling has gone out the window, and you can barely contain your own. Since leaving America, you had hoped to keep the waterworks to a minimum. What kind of hero starts crying after every brush with death? But maybe she is right on that part, and you can allow yourself to be a scared gal on the rare occasion before you take on the cowl full time.
>>
"She lives alone, ya know?" You ask, knowing full well she doesn't know. "Ah know it's a tad sudden, but can we let her stay the night? Ah can't imagine going through this all alone…"

>"...<Ushi? Are you okay?>" You hear your friend's voice somewhere behind you, prompting you to hurriedly wipe away your tears. "<...How long have you been standing here?>"

At that, you both turn to see Pony emerging into the foyer from behind the interior doors, Officer Tamakawa following right after. Your American pal casts her big gaze at the both of you, confused and concerned.

>”...<Oh, fuck that.>” You are surprised to hear your Momma whisper and watch as she stomps to your fellow blonde with purpose.

>”Uh, Misses Walk-euuuugh?” Pony whinnies as her breath is also stolen by Momma’s cuddly yet crushing embrace. Tamakawa almost makes to try to help her out of it but backs off once he realizes that it isn't an act of aggression but an aggressively kind one.

>”I don’t know exactly where you are going, but you’re not going back there! Not tonight! You’re staying with us. You’ll be having dinner and spending time with people who'll care for you and, well, I suppose meeting the relatives. Think of it as a practice run for I-Island.” Momma exclaims as she lightly swings your friend to and fro without letting go.

>”O-okay?!” Pony squeaks out as she peeks at you from under your Momma’s hug, giving you a ‘what just happened?’ sort of look. You merely shrug and wipe your nose.

It only takes a moment longer for you all to explain to the cops that Pony would be accompanying you back to your house. Soon after that, the units that were to chaperone you both were consolidated together into a now rather sizable convoy of vehicles, both in front and behind Momma’s compact electric sedan for the ride to the house.

It was on the cusp of being officially ‘late’ when you arrived and waved your escort off. You take the lead and unlock the front door while Momma continues to dote on your friend. For her part, Pony doesn’t seem to find her attention overbearing at all and was happy to tell your mom about her part-time job and how she manages to keep up with it in light of U.A.’s intense schedule on the way over. A welcome distraction for the both of them from the events of earlier today.

You can’t help but agree. After a day like this, and if you hadn't brought a guest, you would be looking for a chore to finish. Cooking, cleaning, anything really to let your mind process your run in with Shigaraki. But the possibility of the latter is taken off the table when you are greeted by the sight of your humming uncle holding up the living room couch by one arm while your little cousin cleans around the baseboard underneath; a softly buzzing handheld vacuum cleaner in his hands. From the looks of it, they’ve also taken care of tidying up the rest of the main floor.
>>
Before you can give them a ‘<Howdy>’, Momma and Pony enter behind you, the clip-clop of their hooves on the wood alerting the boys.

>"Hey Kat, how’d it go?" Uncle Rik asks aloud, stopping himself from fully turning around just before he slammed the furniture in his grip into the wall. "Why don't you leave the vacuum over the kotatsu and go greet your auntie and cousin, Angus?"

>"O-okay!" Your little cousin says, hoofing it towards the small table and gingerly leaving the still humming device atop it before dashing towards you with a wagging tail. A classic routine commences with Angus hugging your mom's leg and then your waist, both accompanied by a cheerful "Hello!" which you both return earnestly.

Not expecting a second pair of hooves, he stops next to Pony, tilting his head to the side and looking her up and down.

>"Hello?" He says, taking a step back and stealing glances over his shoulder at his dad.

>"<Oh em GEE~!>" Your fellow blonde squeals as she bends down and takes hold of the boy from under his arms, lifting him up in a manner not unlike a puppy.

You yelp at that, quickly trying to figure out how to best pry the nervous boy from her without freaking him out any further. All in the hopes of minimizing the typical oncoming quirk-induced damages.

However, nothing apparently happens. He just lets himself be manhandled by Pony, his wagging tail remaining so. He likes her attention from the start?

>"He's so cute!" Pony exclaims, getting a giggle out of your mom. She cradles your cousin on her hip with ease and pivots on her hoof to face you, winking. "I can't believe you kept him hidden from me!"

>"So, uh, who's the tag along?" Uncle Rik asks, looking at you, Pony, and his sister as he scratches the back of his neck, having placed the couch back in its place already. "Is she… you know? Does she only look like family or..."

>"I'm Pony!" Pony answers.

>"...I can see that." Your uncle remarks with a smirk. "Naming subtlety checks out, naturally."

"This here's mah pretty pal Pony." You say, motioning with one hand to her top half, particularly her oversized horns, while the other presents the rest of her down to her hooves.

>"Heh, pretty impressive rack for a horse girl." He compliments her, gesturing at his own horns as he says it.

"Yeah, well, anything over zero is impressive then." You huff, crossing your arms. "Ain't even a proper unicorn or anythin’..."

>"Care to introduces who the cowboys of the room?" The girl in question asks, looking between your cousin and uncle.

"Oh, sorry. This little fella here's mah cousin Angus, and that's his dad, mah Uncle Rik." You explain.

>"Hi there." Your uncle says, a hand going to his bandaged nose while waving with the other.
>>
>"Woah… From your dad, you're going be huge!" She tells Angus bouncing him a little in her arms. He giggles in response and you’re totally not jealous of coaxing out of him in minutes what took you weeks. She then ruffles his hair, patting him between the horns. "You better get all the cuddles you can while still pint sized."

>"Thank you for taking care of the housekeeping Rik. With that out of the way, I can get to making something for-" Momma says as she walks towards the kitchen, stopping to do a quick headcount. "...This whole herd without taking Ushi away from her friend for help."

>"Ain't no problem, Kat. Feels nice to do some honest work for a change." Your uncle claims as he walks away from the living room towards the room he shares with his son, stopping briefly next to you. "Glad to see you are okay, Ushi… But I didn't doubt you wouldn’t be, champ!"

>"I, however, reserve the right to worry regardless of accomplishments!" Your mom yells from the kitchen.

Somehow, they always seem to act 30 years younger when talking with each other.

Now having a clean living room to lounge in, you take a seat on the couch, inviting Pony and Angus to do the same. The younger boy takes the middle cushion between the two of you as you fully lean back with a sigh. Your classmate makes a similar sound on the other side as she rests her arms on her knees and her head in her hands. In some unspoken agreement, you both take a brief moment to decompress before looking at each other and at your cousin in calm, content silence; appreciating that nothing was happening to any of you and nothing was expected of you.

Angus, still too shy to initiate anything himself, starts imitating a digging motion with his hooves in the air in boredom. It looks a bit like cycling underwater. Doesn’t take long for Pony to be charmed and begin imitating him, which leads to some non-verbal game of Simon Says with their legs. You look on as they play which inevitably concludes in more giggles that finally breaks the ice and starts up an equally cute conversation between the two.

Having some time to think, you wonder what else you might do tonight.

>What do you do?

Pony expressed the want to bake something with Ushi before. If they've got the stock for it, work on dessert while momma works on the main course and just shoot the shit. Little Angus and Tin can help with the smaller stuff too, like mixing the batter if it's cake or decorating the top if it's pie.

Present day Angus, absolutely not. However, time skip Angus is going to be a fucking hentai protagonist. Mark my words in about a decade this lad will have a harem of 5-6 girls fucking utterly fiending for him.

>[Just rest and hang out with Pony. You didn't bring her here just to ignore her after all. The consequences of today's events will find you regardless, so why go out of your way to check it all out? "Ah don't have a cable package, but Ah have a couple futons, fast internet and a laptop. Wanna build a pillow fort and watch some stuff 'till we pass out?"]

NO

At least not modern Angus. Future Angus, though? If you have a good idea, then that'll be fine.

Lets not lewd the kid that came from a very dystopian nightmarish place, where all his life views have been horribly distorted. He needs a lot of time to adjust to his new reality. Head pats and hugs only.

Hey, we got past that a long time ago... We just like to mess around, and have spent a long time between arcs.

Also yes, kinda. I'll go long as health permits or it's done.

You got to admit that MHA really jumps around and skips a lot of time. Time that could be used to actually interact with the world. Feels so wasteful to skip the time in-between plot points. Interactions with characters and the world is what makes quests interesting to me.
