Life as a kobold is not easy. Most of civilized society hates you and you hate them in return. It's a vicious cycle that leads to situations like the one you're in right now. Marching through a swamp with 19 other kobolds after your warren was raided and slaughtered. Your group used to have at least 60 members and much more supplies, but nature isn't kind to your people and one by one they got picked off. A few days ago the group cut through a swamp thinking that they would pass through soon enough to greener pastures and find a good spot to start a new life. The problem is, after days of walking you're still in this awful place with no end to the marsh in sight. Everyone is sick and tired of marching, morale is low, and no one wants to keep moving. A vague consensus has been reached among the group and enough is enough. It has been decided that we must make due and settle here, at least for a little while.Kobolds naturally like warm, dry, or at least temperate environments. A cold, wet swamp is the exact opposite of that. Morale is low among the group and supplies aren't looking much better. Food stuffs mostly consists of things scavenged while you were moving and very little dried goods. In terms of tools... Well you've got a couple stone knives? Some kept their slings on them at least and you suspect others have odds and ends they're hiding for themselves...So, what should be done to improve this awful situation?DAY 1KOBOLDS: 25FOOD: LOWMORALE: CRITICAL>[PROJECTS]: Every turn you vote a subject to have the group focus on. Subjects may branch out into different choices as kobolds decide and bicker on which is the best way forward in said subject or sometimes just end in a one off. Specifications can be added to votes, but results may vary due to kobolds being argumentative creatures or the cruel realities of a work effort not panning out. Specific numbers of kobolds can be assigned to separate tasks. This can be good for short term tasks, but longer ones can suffer, never forget the physical and mental limitations of a small number of kobolds.[Choose a subject to focus on]>Food>Housing>Organization>Surveying>Tools>Write-In

>>5060380>ToolsHow are we gonna get food if we have no tools? Y'all trying to hunt/fish with your hands?
>>5060380>FoodWe're in a swamp, so most of what we might be hunting or fishing for is going to be small and fairly easy to trap due to the mix of land-and-water we've got.Lots of small crustaceans, molluscs, insects, amphibians, lizards along with fish and birds. The OP mentioned that although our known tools are limited to stone knives, that we've probably got some slings in someone's possession so those'll do for hunting the birds. Everything else meanwhile it's going to come down to hand-gathering (not too much of an issue for the crustaceans, molluscs and insects - even the amphibians if we're lucky - but difficult for the fish...).There's also the point of plants we might eat, cattails for example are a IRL swamp plant that is relatively common and somewhat edible even to humans which combined with the possibility of say mushrooms, berries or edible flowers / fruit, should provide reasonable diversity to our diet. Though we should be terrified of the possibility we might run into the local apex predators since they'll probably kill 1/3 of us before we run away or scare it off.
>>5060383>>5060397>>5060418>>5060420Sort of hungry after all that fighting. The first order you issue is that of food gathering. Getting food can't be that difficult in a swamp, right? None of you have any experience in what a swamp is actually like though. This is exemplified when on of the kobolds grabs a weird sausage looking plant and bites into it. They immediately regret this when it burst out into fluff and start sputtering and hacking up the cotton-stuffs onto the ground as everyone watches. Well, that clears up one plant at least? Vegetables don't really agree with kobolds anyways. Sometimes you can stomach fruits if they taste good, but what a kobolds stomach really needs is meat. Hopefully you can find some small animals that aren't too hard to gut and devour. You don't like the idea of vermin, but if comes down to it, you're ready to eat a rat or something. >>5060488>>5060493>>506049569,29,95,99,90Ordering your kobolds into some decent sized squads, you order them off to gather whatever food they can. Cautiously though, this place could be dangerous, no one really knows what they're doing. Saying this, you sit down on the spot and take a break while you wait for them to come back. The perks of being a leader of course...The first two groups come back in a few hours. They seem to have focused on searching the various ponds and water bodies in the swamp. The first group brought back dozens of frogs and toads. The whole swamp is infested with them as far the incredibly common croaking you've been hearing tells you. You once heard that frogs can be poisonous, but that was in the jungle, right? They got a lot of them though. The second group saw some things deeper in the water and were brave enough to dive in and catch has these fat eel things with legs and arms and such. They managed to sharpen a few sticks and impale them, dragging back a decent amount. pretty big things too, one can feed a bold for a whole day you reckon. One group decided that they wanted to be berry pickers, which you're not too fond of. Probably didn't do a good job hunting and wanted to save face. They've got these big bulbous pink berries that you've never seen before. Apparently there's a lot of the things around here, though you don't know if they're edible. One of the ones with a sling did do something good though and managed to brain a wren bird with a sling. You're claiming that one for yourself though, birds are tasty...Fourth group didn't have much luck. While walking about the swamp a giant scaled lizard nearly bit a kobold in half if another didn't pull them back in time. The creature was well hidden, floating among the reeds. It almost looked like some malformed cousin of dragons, and has just as vicious a disposition too. They come back shaken with nothing but a handful of frogs between them. The last group comes back far too late though, and they're missing a member. According to them, they got separated at some point. By the time they found the lost bold he was just laying there on the ground, all the fluids sucked out his body like some piece of beef jerky. Just a scale hide draped over a skeleton. They say they hear some kind of loud chittering when they saw the body... Sort of terrifies you, but can't show that to anyone. The death disturbs everyone a little, but death is a common occurrence for your kind. Night has begun to set in and it would be too dangerous to venture out now. Everyone is much happier to have something to eat. You are at least, roast poultry is great. >>5060650Maybe but I'd council that the spiders are probably uncontrollable - short of magic / divine aid in taming them.>>5060651Okay that's good news, working from that we don't need to worry too much about night-shift nor sentry duty since the dark won't be too much of a bother. Similarly, knowing they aren't good swimmers, at least natively, means we can assume that any success at catching fish was good luck - meaning we need nets, traps, rods or spears to make that sustainable. As to the claws and stature, that at least confirms that the giant spider that took one of us down must have been either large and struck with deadly effect immediately or extremely venomous with some sort of paralytic effect given it took down that kobold without it getting a shout-out to its group or being wounded by it clawing in defence - the fact that it retreated / didn't attack after killing one of us, implies that either it had its fill or it felt intimidated - in future we should move in groups even more carefully... Also knowing we've got little knife hands is good, because that means we don't need to worry about getting knives, axes and so on quite as immediately or critically - especially since the best we might do currently is flint. Personally, in terms of next priorities I'd say we should work on getting a supply of woven material (cattails being suited to this purpose) since it'll work for making fishing gear (traps), storage (baskets) and even shelter in combination with wood, mud or stone. We should probably also force everyone to set the more sizable bones of their food aside for use, since bone needles and other such items will be quite useful to us in the near future. Similarly, any leftovers or scraps should be kept for use as hunting / fishing bait later or tomorrow.
Also we should start looking into treehouses soon as they'll at least protect us from the gators
>>5060660I support this
You really don't like berries, but if others are eating them that means more meat for you, and less of a need to scrounge for food. So, you single out a particularly dumb looking kobold and decide to test these berries. You're smart after all, you can use... Scientific method was it called? Not like anyone can deny your orders now, you're the boss. Anyways you start the tests. First you just squish a berry on their scales. Nothing happens and they just look at you blankly. Pretty expected honestly. Next you have them chew a berry. Nothing really happens, but they say they taste kinda watery and bitter. No tongue melting or anything. After that you have them eat one and after nothing happens again after a few minutes, a handful.They... Seem safe? They're described as just not tasting pleasant at all though, and no one really wants to eat them when they have meat available. Like two other bolds try a handful of them and confirm their preferences. Of course you were right in your hypothesis, berries suck.We don't really have any plan for where to sleep. Everyone just has to sit around and sleep on the ground or hastily made beds of reeds. Overall it's pretty miserable, wet, and cold. A few bolds are forced to keep watch in shifts so we don't get butchered in our sleep. It's not the first time you've done this in your march through the lands so everyone understands what needs to be done. Doesn't make it anymore pleasant. Hard to sleep with all the critter noises too, so much croaking...---------------------------------After a fairly restless night where thankfully nothing bad happened, you discover that yes, the berries did indeed have an effect. The three kobolds that ate them are feeling miserable and groaning on the ground, but don't exactly seem like they're deathly poisoned. Really just looks like food poisoning. This is why you never eat fruits, nothing good ever comes from it. Meat will never betray you. You take a bite of your leftover wren you huddled next to in the night to affirm your beliefs. They'll probably be fine by the afternoon, and if not you'll kick them into working... Does the sky look darker today?...>Discovered [Marsh Berries] Generally taste bitter and watery. We could also include a fire pit with a hole in the roof for the smoke to escape - or (if we burry the firepit slightly below the floor or build up one of the walls with mud) a angled flue made of mud through one of the walls.
>>5060692>>5060700>>5060702>>5060707The thought of sleeping in the mud for another night disgusts you. Something needs to be done about the shelter situation. It's very comforting to be surrounded by all sides by terrafirma. Oh, how you wish you could make a burrow to rest in, away from the horrible sight of this environment. Too much risk though, what with the huge quantities of water here and all. Mud huts will have to do for now. After all are roused and prepared, the plans are set and kobolds are put to work making some huts. This is yet another field that none of you really have experience in. Sure you know that you need to set supports in the form of sticks laced into the ground to form the mud around, but the soil here is so moist that it's hard to use. The stuff just refuse to solidify half the time and it's causing problems. It's not looking good until one of the wretching kobolds manages to get up from his slump and start instructing others. Krikyak, from what he says, used to work with ceramics and such back in the old warrens and knows quite a few tricks about masonry. Plant fibers are mixed with mud to make the mud more pliable and solid. Fire is used to help dry up mud slightly while others dig drainage ditches to leach off some of the ground water from your encampment. Much better at instructing how primitive above ground architecture is made, half the bolds don't even know how to make proper rope from reeds.By the evening, the 24 of you have barely managed to make two relatively small huts. Large plant fronds have been placed on top in such a way to keep the rain out. Not a moment too soon as well, as the rain starts to come down in light rivulets. You're all crammed inside the much too small shelters at 12 each. Concerns are raised whether or not the buildings will hold given how moist they are, and plant fronds were hastily pasted over them in an effort to keep the water off. For now they hold. It's still light outside. Even if it's raining, it's not too harsh. The swamp has plenty of material to work with in fibrous plants and thin trees that can be cut with sharpened stones. Some work on repairing the two buildings you already have while others set the framework for 3 more huts with their better supervision. You personally take the time to manage the improvement of your own. How can the leader live in a run down pile of mud? Some time is spent speaking with Krikyak on the encampment development. >>5061545>>5061550>>5061553>>5061583>>506162429, 89, 32While you aren't too certain on the effectiveness of a kiln yet, you're willing to let Krikyak work on the tool himself, he's the only one who seems to know how to properly make one anyways. The rest of the workers are set about finishing up the 3 huts before beginning our newest project, a palisade around the camp. Trenches are dug and mud stacked high in the form of walls with sharpened wood spears driven into them to fend off any wildlife. By nightfall, about a quarter of the wall is done, and It'll likely take another day to fully finish the wall. The ceramicist seems to have finished his kiln, but he says there's still much work to be done with a charcoal pit before it can even be used. The hunting parties return relatively unmolested. No birds or anything special, just... A lot of frogs. They're not bad, and some of the kobolds seem to quite like them when roasted, but it's just bland to you really. The last party to return though has a story for you. while they were trudging through the marsh at evening time and the mist had almost completely lifted, they saw something. Off in the distance something tall, at least 16 feet tall by estimate. It looked almost transparent like a ghost and stood on four stilted, spiderlike legs. They connected to some bulbous sack of body that hung down. As it walked along an alligator crawled out from a nearby pool. Slowly a tentacle appendage with a needled tip emerged from its body. Like lightning it stabbed into the lizard, and in minutes the creature was left a drained husk of scaled skin laying on the ground. The hunting group was too frightened to even think of checking the corpse before they slunk back to camp, barely caring to look for more food. The story is horrifying to think about. What if a monster like that comes across the camp? A tiny palisade won't do anything to fend off that thing! What to do... Well, regardless all you can do now is sit at camp and roast some frogs. Maybe some solution will show itself in time? Speaking of frogs, the damn things are so vocal tonight. It's like a thousand of them are out croaking in a concert or something...By the time daylight hits, everyone is up. People seem to be getting used to the routine of camp, though everyone is a little quieter than usual. Has the story affected them too? The additional houses let everyone rest a little better at least. You take a spitted frog that was sitting outside and chomp on it thinking about what to do next.DAY 4KOBOLDS: 24FOOD: Decent!MORALE: Okay?...PROJECTS: Kiln, Palisade[Choose a subject to focus on]>Food>Construction>Exploration>Military>Cultural>Tools>Write-In

Half the kobolds are selected and organized into an exploration squad while the rest stay home to prepare weaponry. You choose the most promising looking bold, a young one named Yapyaw, totally not by random and designate them as squad leader to explore the lands of this swamp after waiting long enough to collect some weapons. In terms of weaponry crafting it's really simple stuff. Fibers are corded and tied into slings, while sturdy sticks are sharpened to spears. Time is taken to find a good quantity of stones and stockpile them in the camp for use. Most humans would scoff at the simple sling. They think it primitive and pathetic. True, it's pretty low tech. In the last nest the most beloved defenders in the warren got crossbows and other metal worked goodies. But one should never underestimate the power of a rock launched at speeds high enough to shatter skulls. This is why while the others scout about, your half of the kobolds practice with the noble sling, missing a respectable 60% of their shots for most of the day. It might hurt like hell but boy are slings hard to aim. Practice makes perfect anyways, you reassure yourself fashioning a hat out of the wren feathers you kept. Krikyak is covering up a bunch of wood with mud. Says something about charcoal. Weird.--------------------------------------As Yapyaw you have no idea what you're doing really, but it does feel good to have authority and order people around! You confidently stand with your spear over your shoulder as you wonder which direction to aimlessly wander in. Probably not east, that's the direction everyone came from after all, not much of notice would be there if everyone saw it all coming here right?... The other directions don't look that different from where you are right now. Less trees and plants in the west maybe? Fairly sure that most of the frog croaking has been coming from the south too. There's a big body of water out here, not too uncommon in a swamp. It's sort of deep though. Now that you look at it, the sides don't really angle into a bowl like most ponds, it just sort of... Drops off into a big, deep hole. Is there a bottom to that thing? Sorta feels unsettling the more you look at it though, kind of like the cold icy grip of death has grasped your heart and is pulling you forward. As if the abyssal depths threaten to yank your soul into the cruel darkness away from the warm sun... Moving on!There's lots of frogs, though they seem way too small to bother eating. There's like hundreds of them hopping about in the new large stretch of thick brush that you find yourself in. There's a lot of these short stubby bushes that seem to be growing fist sized fruits, but they look really hard and rough. Like rocks? You pick one and look at it, poking it with a nail and... This is just a rock. Why are plants growing rocks? Suddenly you hear a rustling in the foliage a distance away. Out emerges a very strange figure. It looks... Vaguely human. It's completely naked except for its body which is wrapped in a ball of uncleaned pelts completely covering it's torso and head. It has a floppy, pointy green hat balanced atop its head pelts too. The arms and legs seem twice as long as they naturally should be and the guy just seems bigger than a regular person should be in general even without the stick limbs. He looks at your direction and stares directly into your eyes. The face is hidden and all you can see are glowing yellow lights where eyes should be and rotten, sharp teeth. Forward march to the north-west!You leave the froggy south and keep on walking, even if the rest of the squad is extremely reluctant and unhappy about it, you're the boss for now. The ground mostly clears of vegetation the more west you go. It's a lot of flatter ground and water pools. Makes it decently easy to follow given the big foot prints left behind. As you keep going you start seeing new stuff. Like mounds of dirt that just keep getting higher and higher. Some of them have pieces of metal embedded in them, most of which have been rusted into uselessness. As you keep following the tracks as they turn west vegetation keeps getting sparser and rusted metal pokes out of the ground and water like reeds. You often have to take roundabout ways to avoid wildlife, and a fog has started to settle down. His pace is so much faster than yours too with how long those legs are.At a certain point, inexplicably the footprints duplicate and split off in different directions. You've stopped really questioning what this thing is capable of really. The right path seems to lead to more and more rusty wreck, while on the left, the ground seems VERY moist, almost soupy. Less wildlife too, and the ones that do appear are odd looking. There was a wren that had two heads, though the other one hung limply. It's several minutes of wandering until the evening has started to set. In the distance you find what you were looking for. Standing tall among the mud pillars is a wooden pole, carved with cartoonish figures of swamp fauna and flora. You see your kidnapped kobold tied to the pole at the top, though he seems dazed and out of it... There's empty bottles at the bottom, is he drunk? But none of that stands out as much as the lanky freak sitting perched at the top, giggling like mad at the top. He points at you and laughs before tearing off pelts from his rotted fur covering and tossing them to the ground before you. You shout as you immediately take the clever decision to start backing up and spinning a rock in your corded sling. Obviously, all the events of the day have made everyone nervous, and this is just one of those breaking points. Accuracy is minimal, and it's by a miracle that even one of them clatters to the ground in a furred heap after it gets its skull shattered. It surprises you how much fur can pad against blunt force trauma honestly. They're simply too fast for you to reload another round of rocks before they're upon you, and you find yourself viewing a bone hound in slow motion with its jaws open about to chew your face off. It's at this time that you enact a move of utter tactical genius and skill of a true leader.By which you mean you grab the kobold right next to you and push him in the way. While you're both screaming, you take the opportunity to start whaling on the dog with your loaded sling, smacking it over and over with the rock while it's busy chewing up the less fortunate bold. The other kobolds are doing much of the same. It is a feverish frenzy of rocks and teeth and kobold and construct flail about in a sea of violence to the backdrop of discordant, high pitched fiddle music. It's the type of insanity that one can never really prepare for. Somehow, some way, after who knows how long of fighting, you emerge victorious. The shield you used? most certainly dead along with another. No one seems to have escaped without scratches except you, and it's by sheer numbers advantage that you won. How lucky. The lanky man stops his fiddling and starts clapping and hollering at your group. He pulls at a rope ribbon and the kobold tied to the pole drops to the ground dazed and confused. He leaps from the totem and lands a few feet in front of you. Like lightning he pulls out three tiny chests out from the floppy pointed hat on his head and slaps them down on the ground grinning like mad and staring you in the eyes with those yellow pinpricks of light. They each have a little piece of paper with a drawing on them. One, a short girl with a wide brim hat, surrounded by frogs. Eventually training switches from slinging rocks to practicing spear formations and jabs against piles of mud. It's boring, but important that they all understand what to do in a fight instead of running around like chickens with their heads cut off. A short break is taken and some are directed in piling mud on wood for some charcoal pits. It's in the night when the expedition finally returns. An egg that by all accounts, seems to be a dragons egg. The warmth gives you such hope for the future... Sure some might say that being ruled by some draconic brat is an incredible downgrade, but serving others is natural for kobolds. We usually hate it if it's some big monster like an ogre or an orc warlord, but something in our genetics just makes us happy to be around dragons. Must be the will of Tiamat. (Thanksgivings forces me away from the PC. Expect potential mistakes from phone posting)It’s settled that clay is to be harvested from the hole for making tools. Reed baskets are made to ferry the clay back and forth as well as make traps. Hopefully they can ease the burden of labor to keep the camp fed. Traps are the specialty of kobolds after all. You would be surprised how much you can do with some rope.As the clay comes in, pottery and other useful bits are formed and prepared to fire. A backlog of unfired ceramics is quickly created and extra work is put in to expand the kilns. About a day of up time and you’ll soon have well filled your need for ceramic goods. After a good deal of clay is harvested and stockpiled a break is taken. Most kobolds report feeling uneasy near the hole and don’t want to be near it for some reason. One reports seeing a giant frog in the distance but no one else does. Probably a liar. Traps are set and only a small amount of game is caught due to set up time. Food consumptIon has been slightly slowed for today. i dont know dnd or whatever setting this is lore, but just based on the choice baphomet seems bad. just how big of a mistake is picking him? also you guys have been pretty reckless with our bolds, it would be fine if we had even just a 100, but we got less than 25 at the start, and you keep making them sacrifice to demons and then chase down the demon and then fight the demon and all that shit, maybe chill until we get at least 50 bolds and a steady birth rate before doing wild shit.

Soups are an easy way to make pleasant food with basic materials - although our dislike of consuming plants as a species would probably cause issues there since we can't use vegetables to bulk it / enhance it, we'd effectively be making Bovril / meat-drink. An alligator or something like that would be perfect. You order the kobolds out to hunt one on the idea that they would get the rest of the day off after they bagged something significant. As you wander about the camp you think that some faith would do well to help. Which god to make an altar to first though- There's a spot outside the camp you should go. It's a deep hole in the earth choked with water. Four others are ordered to come with you, bringing sturdy ropes. As you walk into the shallow waters, the mud sucking your feet in you know where to go. This spot right here, your claws start to shovel out earth and the others must join in. Eventually you find it, smooth black stone immaculate in its creation though marred by filthy soil. The other whisper in fright at its sight, but you order them to bind the stone and drag it back to home. When sat up in its proper location and wiped of grime, it reveals itself in terrible splendor. A six sided rod of polished black stone engraved with the iconography of an ominous bestial goat man preforming great feats of debauchery, hedonism, lust and violence in six terrible acts. The hunters eventually come back with their grisly prizes. Two alligators. As it was reported, they had surrounded a pool, viciously pelting the beasts with stones and keeping them back with sharpened spears for a long time until the great lizards finally succumbed. The meat will be quite tender. You have them wait till midnight for the ceremony. Torches are lit and put about as the carcasses are set upon slats of wood. You take and another take stone knives, ritualistically carving them open and removing the vital organs to be put into fine jars and set by the altar. The precious blood is drained as well, saved for later use. The others watch in nervous glances until the meat is sliced off, set to cook, letting the smell of cooking flesh flow through the camp. Before anyone is allowed to eat, blood is mixed with thickening material and painted upon the bodies of every kobold in celebratory ceremony. After preparation is done we ravenously descend upon the food. The meat is delicious and dripping with juice, the blood is drank and tastes like fine wine. Songs are sang as we dance in the fire light, reveling in the end and beginning of life. The skins of those we felled are hoisted upon sticks and paraded about while others join together mirthfully. Joyous. Bloody. Carnal.

We were going to struggle before but with the Kobold Patron or Draconic god, we wouldn't be entering negotiations as "followers of absolute evil" - you know? Similarly, this'll attract the enemies of this god to attack us.On the other hand, organs for godly boons is fairly easy for us to do and shouldn't cause many issues besides slightly reducing our calorific intake from hunts. Though this depends on what the boons are really. Also I would've preferred the Patron of Kobolds because that is cuter / might lead to a more functional society in my opinion.

>>5066036Mm, that I can agree with. Frankly, I don't imagine we'll have great luck with diplomacy either but that is why we must clearly learn to make this swamp a fortress and our Kobolds deadly. Kobold Roman-Vietcong mix when?

Taking a step back to really take stock of the situation, you grab a cup to get a drink, promptly spit it out when you realize it's blood, then get some water. Every kobold slowly gets to work setting the camp back in order. The Palisade is the main project of the day since a defensive perimeter you don't have to watch as much is very useful. As everyone gets to it, you discover that somehow, all the females got pregnant last night and now there's about 12 eggs all piled up in one of the huts. No one really knows who's the father of any of them, last night was really wild... Population bonus is nice though? The clouds seem to darken and rain might fall soon again, so clay is packed on top of the walls to waterproof them. You want room to grow within the walls, so if you really push it you can get them done within the day. The kobolds seem happier today so they're putting in extra effort at least. The traps can be easily harvested and we're getting better at knowing how to use them in this different environment, an alright haul pads the food stock out at an even level. Others have talked about looking for new types of food to spice things up.While thinking about the eggs and how you might need to make a new building for them, a kobold tells you he thinks he saw a smoke cloud coming from the east while checking traps. Fires don't really happen naturally in a swamp so that must be other people in this swamp. It could be kobolds if you're lucky, but it could also be some humans or others who would gut you on sight.Another comes at you with something astonishing. In his hand he holds a fat toad of decent size. The aggressive and annoyed creature is quite something. Its skin is the color of gold and shimmers like it's made of the metallic substance. On its head is a little crown like growth as well! It's placed in a small enclosure with a puddle of water where it constantly tries to escape. You send a little scout group off to investigate the smoke and supervise the construction of the palisade. Would be a fine day if not for the dark skies and clammy temperatures. Decently relaxing enough and good time is made. By the time evening comes all the work is finished up and you've got a decent defensive wall. Even put in a gate of wooden spikes to raise and lower. When the scouting team does come back they've got a very nice surprise. A band of kobolds from the same nest who happened to wander on over in your same direction. They're more or less just as ragged as you were when you started, but the 16 of them really do well to pad your numbers. They've got some interesting information as well. Apparently a far off human settlement to the east they stole food from is sending an expedition to settle somewhere in the swamp. At the rate they're moving they might arrive in... Around a week or two? Give or take. Still, extra numbers means more dwellings to make. Such a pain...--------------------------------------------------------------When you come to in the morning, the skies are pouring down with rain. Kobolds don't like humans, that's a very well known thing. And the fact that they are going to be encroaching on your swamp? Well you take offense to that. Time to really get going with making traps. It's not easy in the intellectual sense, even for kobolds given the open nature of a swamp. It's mostly sharpening spears and making tools for trap kits that'll be easy to deploy out in the field. Most anti-humanoid traps aren't going to be particularly effective at catching animals given how they're different purposes and all. While everyone is whittling away there gets to be talk about alternative food sources that aren't frogs again. One says something about a fish farm using the weird fat eel things that live in the murky pools about the swamp. They're decent enough, but it's annoying trying to spot them in the cloudy water and there's no telling if there'll be any in a particular pool. A farm would solve those issues, though you're not very knowledgeable in that field. It would take a lot of effort too considering the digging, irrigation, and construction needed. If you felt like the trek, you might be able to find some fruit trees (as much as you hate the stuff yourself) or less dangerous and meaty game. Spices are in forests too, right? In the old warren you're pretty sure you remember that there was a mushroom farm as well. Do mushrooms grow above ground? Swamps are probably good enough for them to grow in, you think you saw a few around as well, though no one was brave enough to eat some. Mushrooms are the meat of vegetables anyways...The rain goes on as the hunting party goes out, and they spot something that one might consider concerning. There's frogs to the south near the camp. Big frogs. Like fat cow sized and having the temperament of bullfrogs. And to vouch for how dangerous they might be, one snatched a bird out of the sky with its tongue like a fly. Oh dear... They're still far enough from the camp that they're just lazing about the water pit, but they might move closer eventually.>Begin planning of a fish farm>Consider the logistics of mushroom farming>Scout the forest for alternative foods

Kobolds are sent out and ordered to start excavating a pool outside of the palisade for the fish farm. They all grumble at working in the rain, but what are you supposed to do about that, rip the clouds of the sky. Some have taken to tying big leaves to their heads like some sort of improvised rain hat. You're busy attempting to sew a coat out of your alligator skins yourself, gotta look respectable after all. On the plus side the ground being mush doesn't really affect the dig that much, you're just removing earth from a spot anyways. It'll lessen how much water you'll have to move as well. By the evening you've got a small pond going. Still need the fish to actually put in the pond, but it's a start. The hunters manage to bag two birds and a lot of frogs. Not the big ones mind you, they're terrified of the things. An alligator is hard enough to kill but those things are giant slabs of meat and in a herd. Your spears aren't going to do jack against them.Carrying on into next day the rain still carries on, and you find yourself huddling around the fire trying to warm your muscles into moving. Maybe one of the benefits of crowded huts is the shared body heat? Egg seems cold too. A group of gathers are sent out to wrangle some swamp eels into pots and steadily transfer them over. No one knows what you need to maintain a stable population of them or if they've got special food needs, but it's a touch and go process. Besides, if they croak you've just got some fresh fish to eat anyways. After that, it's time to do some important building work. You're building a shrine for the dragon egg. The architecture is very important, that's something you do happen to know. Dragons are vain creatures with a very specific sense of aesthetic. The small stock of clay bricks you've stockpiled are put to this task in forming a smallish cubic structure. Angular patterns are engraved into the surface and detailing gouged out with the most precision we can muster. a bed of dried plants is put inside where the dragon egg (and all the kobold eggs as well) is nestled. A carefully made ceramic dragon is placed on a pedestal behind the egg and bones are strewn about in honor of Tiamat. You know for a fact that as temperamental she is, the goddess cares deeply for the eggs of her kind and their servants, the children are safe her. As you admire the egg in its fanciful room, a kobold comes to you with a concerning matter. You have a visitor.Needless to say, peaceful visitors are not something you would remotely expect in this place, coupled with that fact that you're kobolds. When you reach the entrance of the camp, you see them. Standing there in a comically large wide brimmed hat that, holding a gnarled wooden walking stick that has a lantern hanging from it. It's someone you've seen before, at least a depiction of them. A short human lady in drab gray robes."Have you seen little Oswalt, vermin?" You're not really hoping for much given their attitude, but hey there's a chance. She looks at you for a moment in consideration and then reaches into another bag. She pulls out a little cloth bundle and tosses it at you. You open up the thing and see a handful of cheap looking rings, about 9 in total. "You have these pieces of junk. I've been meaning to get rid of my enchanting practice rings."You thank her for them despite the backhanded words and continue on a line of questioning. "Who's this Reylas? The strange dancing man?"She scoffs at that. "That fool would be Kyrnos. A wretch who's only concerned with entertaining himself with his inane antics. Reylas is the third of us magicians who reside in this swamp. Lucky you've not encountered him, he's much less forgiving to those who meddle with his business." Another item is withdrawn from the bag; a withered, preserved hand that appears to have wood growing out of it, pushing up through the skin and sprouting dark red leaves. "So indignant for someone who spends his time sleeping instead of watching his land.""Is that so?" The forest is sounding significantly more dangerous to you now. "A group of humans seem to be aiming to settle these lands by the way, what do you think of that?""The same opinion I have of you, indifference. Know this, others before have tried to tame these lands and by one reason or another they've all croaked. You and them are nothing special.""And before you leave, you wouldn't happen to have any special feelings towards those big frogs near the water pit, yes? We don't particularly appreciate their presence.""Those? They are nothing special either. I care for the truly exceptional. If you are concerned of them they shall move on to their next favored spot soon. Enough talking, I have business to take care of and wont waste my time here any longer." Without saying another word, she turns on her boot heel and steadily paces off into the rain. All together not an unpleasant experience? For a human at least. Got some shiny rings and good information out of it in the end. Gonna get that treasure hoard eventually... Wait, did you not get her name?----By tomorrow the rain has lightened up slightly. If your guessing is correct. Mostly just a heavy fog over the place reducing visibility by a lot. it should clear up later in the day? Almost 40 people to make huts for, and with the population at this size, it's gotten more difficult to organize them. Some have started wandering off and working on their own projects when you aren't looking. Huts take on their own different look, sometimes built connected to others or built on top of each other thanks to the sturdiness of the new clay bricks. Maybe you'll eventually reach a point where this place is a maze of shaped earth stacked on top of itself. That's far off though, for now you build. On the topic of the rings you've recently received, you immediately try them on. From the start you could tell they were magical, most magic items tend to give off that sort of indescribable feeling that can only be worded as, 'it feels magical'. You can't really tell what they do, but you might say that you feel sort of stronger and better in general. Not by a lot for sure, like maybe... 10% general improvement? The frog witch did say that these were just junk from 'enchanting practice', so you suppose that really is what they are. Well, if they aren't exceptionally useful, it wouldn't be too bad if you kept them all for your self now would it?...Speaking of usable items, there isn't much you can do with what else you have right now. There's only so much that can be made out of sticks, rope, and mud. Sure you can make more spears, pots and urns but if you're going to make more specialized tools you'll need better materials. Where would you get them from though? There's always the metal fields but it's all rusting. The woods could give good lumber, but that warning you've received from the witch was incredibly ominous. Sure your last one may have been controversial with the deaths and all, but you brought back a dragon egg of all things. Truly a valuable treasure! So now you find yourself with 11 others at the edge of the metal fields where the pieces of rust poke out of the ground like caltrops. The stuff on the outskirts doesn't seem valuable at all to say the least, but from what you recall, the metal seems to get more abundant the further you travel in. More metal, but it's also less charted and probably dangerous. You recall that the last time that spider thing was spotted it was over in the west here. You and your little expedition group marches on to go as deep west as you can to see what lies in the metal fields. it's easy going as you reach the point where you last left off. The point where metal starts becoming less decayed and the ground seems warmer for some reason. You don't want to stop here where you last saw the creepy dancing man, instead you keep going west where you hope to find great treasures. it's hard to see, because a thick mist covers this area, probably because of all the warmth and current rain. It's somehow both pleasant and irritating at the same time. No one likes being wet, but at least it isn't cold. You do finally strike gold when you spot something real remarkable. It looms in the distance like some great skeletal carcass. A strut of solid iron stuff poking out the ground with limbs branching off to the sides like a ribcage. It's much less rusted than the other bits and pieces you've found. Did dwarves used to live in this place? You hate dwarves, but why would they build stuff above ground, they usually stay underneath like you. This would be a lovely find, but you realize some important facts. This thing is way too big to just drag away, and you have no real tools to cut it apart. Sort of faced with a conundrum here on this. The crew begins to dig around the metal structure to get a deeper understanding of the structure. Your decision to do this is only enforced when you see on one of the sides of the strut, is the words 'Goboz wuz hyere' in bright red paint along with several crude symbols, which is... Slightly concerning? The soft mud is easy to move, and you occasionally find bits and pieces of crafted metal in the soil. Finely made, but corroded screws, nails and other pieces. It's just tossed into the baskets you carried with you, hopefully it's useful. As it turns out, once you dig deep enough you find that there's a smooth stone floor several feet beneath the mud. This must be some sort of old decayed structure left behind. Who would build something with this much metal though, it just seems wasteful. By now you've collected around 2 baskets filled with relatively decent quality iron stuffs, which would probably make a few ingots worth. The strange noises and animal cries continue on as rain patters about. Right down in the stone floor, there's a patch of squarish metal. Its got indents in it, and... You think it's a hatch?Problems occur when the shapes come out of the mists. Big salamander like lizards that making gurgling honking noises. They're slightly larger than alligators, but more rounded and covered in black and orange scales. Overall the haul seems to be about four and a half baskets full of metals. You've also gotten the location of a future harvesting location and knowledge of the wildlife. Overall? It was a good day!--------------The expedition arrived at around late evening last night. We were optimistic and presumed that they would bring back metal of some kind, but their bounty seems to be of good quality as well! While construction efforts were going on, our ceramicist went through the relatively simple process of making a makeshift smelter and so kobolds were set in shifts over night to process the salvage. In total we've obtained a fair dozen metal bars to use, a major milestone! The news of those ruins also interests you. Perhaps you can find more treasures in there? In just as thrilling news, the dragon egg has begun to crack and shift! It may be today or tomorrow, but soon it's going to hatch. Sure it'll be a hatchling but it's exciting nonetheless! It's going to be hungry though, which brings up a concern. Real pain to do this stuff, especially with the low amounts of small game. The fish farm certainly bandages the consumption rate, but a tiny fish pond won't keep a camp of 38 and a dragon fed. You're going to have to organize a hunt for some larger animals like the gators and such. Maybe you should try to go wild with the hunting for a bit however reckless it may be? The efforts to keep everyone feed are tireless regardless, whatever route you take it's gonna be a pain. Not everyone is hunting though, others set their efforts on making tools and trap components. The more tools you get to handle smithing, the easier it gets. Most of the metal you got is of... dubious quality and you tried your best to filter out the impurities and slag. Those lumps that came out are smacked into sharp implements for killing. While you're organizing today's schedule, you're suddenly hit with a compulsion to visit the shrine. You started this and you might as well commit to it. Taking the canopic jars that have been placed near the shrine, you kneel down and... You're not really sure what to do, there isn't actually a guide on this stuff. You awkwardly look around for a bit before putting a hand on the pillar. There's a sharp cutting pain and you recoil back holding your hand. There's a cut on it now somehow after touching a completely smooth stone face and your blood drips freely down the side of it.You're about to start cursing the damn stone when you see the blood congealing into a little ball. The jars shudder and viscera squirms its way into the ball growing the meaty mess. When all of the organs have melded into the ball it begins to condense, crushing in on itself and smoothing out until it becomes a berry sized crystal orb of carmine red. You pick it up and can faintly feel a pulse like a throbbing heart against your palm. The urns have been emptied, but one has something inside it now; a scroll with strange symbols on it. You're not sure what the writings mean but they definitely have significance. Rituals of symbolism and blood for blood...------------------------------------------A fair few traps and basic tools have been produced by the time the hunters return with their spoils. It's a good haul too. Absolutely bafflingly good for a single day. Three gators, five birds, a score of speared swamp eels, and most confusingly an adolescent of those lambent salamanders.. When asked of how they got such a bounty, they all report that they simply had good luck or were feeling particularly strong today especially around noon. No one can really find any reason to complain about these results despite how strange they were, so we simply accept the good fortune. A small group of kobolds explored the forest today, though not very deeply. They encountered a very peculiar animal that they considered quite dangers. Large weasels the size of wolves that could likely overwhelm any hunter with ease should they slip up. They saw one leap out of a bush and rip the throat of a small stag creature in seconds. Good lumber sits there for sure and they decided to play it safe and return home, managing to collect several baskets of herbs and mushrooms before they go.With the surplus a little celebration is thrown again, much smaller than other one. With the available metal, we decided to splurge slightly and make a large pan and cooking tools so that we could finally indulge in one of the staples of kobold cooking; stir-fry. Fat is use for oil and strips of gator meat are fried up in the pan with mushrooms and herbs for consumption. Delicious. The salamander as you've discovered is incredibly hard to butcher and much more effort than it's worth as the inner guts and meats are absolutely filled with that caustic burning goo. The stuff is shoved into pots and set aside in random corners just in case. It was a good night to be certain.

In terms of fighting, you could continue training the general population to not be useful in a standup fight. There's also the opportunity to create metal weaponry to use, but you sort of used up all the metal yesterday creating trap implements and various tools. An expedition could be sortied to handle that shortage and explore some more. That ruins location seemed pretty interesting. Organization of a dedicated military might also help for an actual defense, though "military" is a strong word for a group of almost 40 kobolds. On the cultural side there's that scroll you received yesterday. Magic is exceptionally rare for civilized races to use since you're sort of born with it or stumble on it by accident somehow. The exception is rituals and such considering the magic is about the whole ceremony instead. Not sure what this scroll is on, but it's definitely blood magic which involves a lot of rituals or so you think?... Could always liven up the camp with some decorations and really mark your territory in this swamp. That's always nice. Or you could also put down a shrine to Krish’gah to really finish off the trifecta. It's going to be a day of relative calm and staying in the camp. You order for the construction of a shrine to the patron of Kobolds in the meantime. A clay statue of his visage will take time to make, so it'll be a while until it's done. And with those who aren't doing anything important? Military drills. Discipline isn't really a strong suit in kobolds, so it's important that they know how to act in the case of a conflict. On the subject of the magic scrolls, it's not like you truly understand what most of it means, but it's also not exactly a true language you have to translate either. A large majority of it is symbols and crude art depicting acts. For instance, one such section depicts a man standing with blood dripping down his carved up arm like a stream as others around him writhe on the ground in agony. In another they dance in a contortionist twisting manner while another mimics them, breaking limbs and tearing skin in the process. Or the one where a brutally injured man pinned with arrows and missing whole sections of muscle to the skeleton butchers a crowd of soldiers as if nothing is wrong. You can see what it's trying to convey through these ritual instructions, but it's hard to pin down what it wants to be done due to how simplistic and vague some of the lead up art is. Likely you'll have to do some experimentation to understand it more without blindly guessing.Taking a break from the reading, you check up on the progress of the training. Javelin and sling volleys, and formation drills take up most of the activity. Getting nearly 40 kobolds to all work at once without slacking off is pretty difficult by the way. As numbers increase it'll get harder and harder to watch them before a few slip away and screw around on their own. Sometimes it's productive like them expanding their own huts, but other times it's something like what you're seeing right now. Two kobolds beating the hell out of each other in a petty squabble. We're a naturally testy species so it's sort of expected for others to find insignificant reasons to just fight. It's been getting more common recently and you've been trying to ignore it, but it's getting on your nerves seeing your workers be unproductive. >>5080038>Practice the rituals on a live animalEh, personally not interested in most of what these scrolls seem to teach (pain-transference, puppeting another and unnatural endurance are my guesses for those three sections) - would've preferred more practical blood magic like "cure disease" or "ensure healthy child" or something. Hopefully stuff like that is in there too...>Set up an official dueling policyDuels are kino, ensures our guys and gals know how to fight. Regarding their morale / ensuring productivity: What might be smart is punitive measures against groups like the Romans did. Make groups of 8 kobolds and assign tasks to them - with the understanding if they fail to produce sufficient results, the whole group will suffer even if 7/8 of them worked hard. They'll self-police and we can avoid having to deal with the minutiae of projects too. Disadvantage is our limited population means we'd be making a coup / power struggle more likely by solidifying lines in our society, assuming we made these groups permanent / long-term membership rather than assembling them at the start of each work day.

If two kobolds want to beat the hell out of each other because one looked at the other funny they'll do it properly. So, you break up this fight and set an official dueling policy. Every night anyone who wants to throw hands will be set in a ring to kick one another's teeth in. No weapons of course, you don't want anyone dying too easily. And as a bonus it's really fun to watch! While those with grudges glare at each other, you go back to working on your ritual studies. The first one seems relatively simple... You think? You've got a basket full of frogs and start doin' stuff, because nothing ventured, nothing gained. Over the course of several hours you maim and accidently kill about nine frogs in your experiments. It took a while to actually understand how to use the spell which you now call, 'Cause Harm'. As the name implies it inflicts pain and torment on a creature, but at the cost of the pain of something else. A thing you've learned that a very important factor in this blood magic is the intent of the person using it. Very important that you've got a focused idea of what you wish to do for the thing to actually work. You can use a frog to harm another frog by carving it up, and even mangling up a jar of guts works a little, though the meats get used up in the process. Another little quirk is that if you cut yourself, the effect is MUCH more potent. You rub your bandage wrist as you remember just how loud that frog screamed...Trying to forget that as communal dinner time rolls in, you walk into the hut you've been storing food in to discover something gorging itself the lower half of an alligator. A reptile the size of a dog. Its hide is scaly and green, but there's a weird fuzz growing over it like fresh moss. From its angular head to horns of what looks like woody bone nubs poke outward. It turns towards you with the condescension and superiority complex that only a dragon could give. Your egg seems to have finally hatched. Doesn't seem like any dragon you know though, too... Planty? Still seems hungry either way, really just demolishing that gator. As the day comes to a close, the relief of Krish'gah the champion of kobolds has been finished. A modest capture of his visage in hardened clay that we place on a pedestal and give offerings of food. Small celebrations are had around the fires as people tell tales of his legendary adventures as a mortal before his ascension while watching a heated fight in the ring. He who stole from the royal armory of the dwarven capital Moklesh, slew the court of king Aberdain of the Al-Sharin, seduced one of the daughters of Tiamat (Don't ask how the size difference worked), and so much more. Really makes you forget about the troubles of life....

The dragon, (A girl, you checked) seems content to laze about its shrine like a cat and occasionally gorge itself on meats. >>5082764>the eggs will take weeks at best, probably months until they become huntersGoing by DnD canon, the kobold reproductive cycle is 2 months from laying-to-hatching for eggs - with a two week "hosting" period between impregnation and laying. You don't stop at the edge and cut down anything yet, instead traveling further in to see what you can find. As it turns out further in, the terrain gets a lot more treacherous. Huge increase in the amount of plants and shrubs, and the actual ground starts taking dips. This leads to a large grove where the ground is mostly water with these big trees sitting on stilt-like roots that dip into the swamp water. Here you find something real interesting. The whole group has been hearing an annoying buzz and you think you saw some big insect thing moving in the grove. The process of cutting down a tree and hauling it off is much harder for a small race such as yours. The size and weight of the lumber is difficult to even haul so you've got to get created. Things such as a makeshift sled to which you'll dump the chopped up logs you can actually manage to drag away. Long tedious process ahead of you and you're worried that some woodland creature might decide to snack on kobold flesh...------------------------------You decide to stick with picking up metal bits and tossing them into your baskets for now. The tool does help with breaking off some of the bigger junk heaps buried in the muck. Well, nothing except clapping from above but you ignore that. The squishing too. With curiosity getting the best of you, you decide to clamber down there with a couple bolds to see what's inside. It's an old hallway of some kind that goes on for a fair distance. The walls are slightly degraded with age, and the rooms that branch off of it are occasionally collapsed in on themselves. The first room you enter is a sort of storage room. There's large old barrels and when you pop them open you find them filled with molded flour, long past its expiration date. On the other side is an intricate rusted machine and several crates, inside of which you find yellowish, paper wrapped bars of something. A brave or stupid kobold sniffs one and takes a bit. Turns out they're edible, if extremely bland and dusty. They've got this strange jelly inside that's oily but tasteless? What a strange place. Is it dwarvish? Putting aside that little discovery, you head out to the hallway and decide to look further. A lot of the doorways are just blocked by heavy rubble or the rooms are completely empty, but near the end it sort of opens up into a squarish room and a large metal door. As the door shakily scrapes to the side, something happens. A loud keening noise from somewhere in the door, like some sort of alarm. It only lasts for a few seconds and cuts out at moments but when it ends something else joins in. From deeper inside the vault you hear it. First, by their nature you can only really climb a ladder one at a time and pretty slowly at that. Second, the other half of the expedition is currently trying to climb down the ladder screaming something about the Jui-kan, the giant fluid sucking spider being above ground and somehow invisible. This is understandably a lot to process, and in the time that all this occurs the things chasing you catch up.Two vaguely humanoid creatures with pitch black skin covered in patches of lambent orange boils. Sharp bone spines and a face replaced with a great toothy maw all point at you with deathly intent as the things lunge at you. By some miracle, your kobolds don't panic and manage to form a spear wall, skewering them as they charge, spilling fluorescent orange bile. They squirm a lot as we stab them to death. It seems the drills paid off. From the continuous howling, those were by no means the end of them. Now you're face with a conundrum, filter up the ladder one by one and face the creature up there, or take your chances down here against who knows how many monsters. You're down a kobold it seems from what happened up there, leaving you with a total of eleven sat in this subterranean tomb. And so you stand at the ready for the oncoming horde. A couple come in and they're skewered on the spears. Then a couple more, come and a kobold's spear breaks as they smash into the formation. They're scratched up we try to jab and prod the horrid things to death. Before those are even dealt with the next group hurls itself into the wall of meat. They just keep coming and coming. Splatters of orange bile pour out and out, slicking the ground in its sickly light. A bold misses and has their face gnawed to mush, another is dragged out and perforated to a hole filled sack. It's a horrendously desperate struggle of nothing but wooden spears against a horrific onslaught. The only thing keeping us frightened folk from outright running is that there is no retreat here. By the time the carnage is over and you realize that there's no more coming all are exhausted and battered. When a head count is finally conducted the numbers are in. Five dead in total against a mass of what might be 27 wretched monsters. The scent is putrid and the survivors aren't unscathed. Even you've got a gash on the arm from that. Everyone silently moves to the food room and just sits in uncomfortable quiet, trying to recuperate from that experience. With the monster above you can't leave for now, but no one exactly wants to move right now. It's a bit hard to even stomach eating right now, you can smell the nauseating scent from here...>Just rest for now then rush home>Spend the night in the room>Explore the opened vault once everyone is rested

>>5089604>>5089608>>5089621>>5089667>>5089812>>5089971>>5090400It's a long while before anyone is willing to move again. Understandable given what happened. Despite all that, you want to see what you've fought over. Such a big number rushed for you, so that must've been all of them, right? You take the first steps into the enlarged chamber with your dwindled cohort to examine the room. It seems like it was supposed to be some place of work? Maybe study?... It has definitely seen better days as whatever creatures that were locked inside had made it their home. Masses of organic stuffs mixed with items and furnishings are strewn about the room with strands of black goo. Large glass containers are filled with bright orange liquids, but half of them are broken and have long since spilled their contents. The place seems to go further on considering the large door at the opposite end identical to the one you just came through. Some kind of extreme laboratory containment procedure? It's not like anything you've seen or even heard of. Sure humans have started making those powder rifle things and such, but this seems so far removed from regular... Anything. On the plus side, no more monsters are in here it seems. There's interesting its hiding in the trash piles as well. You've never been good at appraising so it's hard to tell what's really notable, it all looks weird and foreign to you. It's like the people who built this place threw around metals like it was nobody's business. A lot of glass too By the time you're somewhat satisfied in your investigation, it's night time above ground. You don't really want to travel at night so the only option really is to just spend the night. It's not exactly ideal, but with the hatch and big door, nothing is going to get in. It's probably going to take a while to really understand what this place is and the value in it. Work for the future. Hard to sleep with all the orange glow about this place though....----------------------------One of the two expeditions hasn't come back since last night. You're not sure if you should be worried or not about that, and no one really knows what happened to them. Let's just hope that they're doing fine. The other team came back just fine, slowly hauling a small amount of decent quality lumber to the camp over the coarse of the day. They've brought back some weird glowing sap too, wonder what's up with that. Well, can't hold yourself up on what's happened with that other group, work still has to be done today. >>5090951>Construction Build traps, weapons, wooden armor, everything we need for a fight!>Military Deploy the traps and send some scouts to see any signs of humans.Ok so I checked back and on day 8 those kobolds said that the humans would arrive in a week or two week. So worst case they're here now, or best case we have another week. We still have to get ready since the worst case could happen
>>5090951>ConstructionExpanding our fish farm seems like a good idea - the less we need to rely on wildlife and foraging to survive, the greater the population we can sustain (and the more resistant we are to bad events / sieges / monster attacks). Also holy crap can we please stop risking kobolds until we get some more hatched? Watching our tiny pop get whittled turn by turn is horrifying...Also, if I had to take a guess at what we just found, an alchemist's workshop of some kind. Presumably working with some sort of corrupting magical substance, perhaps based off of an extract of the fire-breathing lizards up above. The Weird Tree (tm) meanwhile is presumably magical - I imagine drinking or applying the sap as a salve might have healing or mana-restoring properties. That or it gives you magic cancer.>>5090967Regarding the humans you aren't wrong but realistically our best bet to resist them is to avoid confrontation for as long as possible and build up further. Fact is, even a dozen humans would be enough to kill all of our kobolds assuming they're even somewhat prepared. Realistically we want to slowly secure our area of the swamp with traps and build up our defences around our settlement to resist attack better (e,g elevated positions for slingers / spear throwers or additional layers of walls to provide redundancy against attack).Ideally, we keep the humans back by being non-aggressive and too difficult to remove until such a time as our population starts rising every turn / we've population to spare. If we're really lucky, they might come to us for trade and then we can buy time or possibly even establish good relations.
>>5090987I don't think we're ever going to be able to be peaceful with or even co-exist with the humans while serving baphomet. Also don't forget these humans are an expedition, they have access to resources from their motherland, they can easily outpace us in development thanks to that. It's better to kill them now and make the humans think that the swamps here are too expensive to invest in. If we let them set up they'll kill us as soon as they get more powerful.
>>5090967+1 we are kobolds in a hostile scape the first thing any human would do is try to kill us , it's just the best way to survive
>>5090951>ConstructionBuild traps around the swamp, for hunting and defense. Continue fortifying the settlement.>CulturalWe need another roun of eggs laid. After that, we can focus on our food sources.
>>5090995>I don't think we're ever going to be able to be peaceful with or even co-exist with the humans while serving baphomet. That relies on them knowing we serve Baphomet. Also there's no reason to believe we can't at least have a non-aggression treaty.>Also don't forget these humans are an expedition, they have access to resources from their motherland, they can easily outpace us in development thanks to that.16-18 Years, 9 months to make a human adult. 6 Years, 4 Months to make a kobold adult. Assuming that holds true, delaying their attack even a single human generation would let us have 3 entire generations of kobolds be born and grown to adulthood before we fight them.Math below based on DnD lore of kobolds, which we seem to semi-use, if QM says its different, ignore this:1 kobold female can lay a egg every 2 weeks + time for actually fertilising, supposing it was a month overall, that means 12 broods per year - each brood has a 10% chance of producing two eggs, which means a total of 13.2 children per year per kobold female at that rate. Assuming our population is 50/50 split (meaning 16 females at this point) and we can maintain even 1/3 of that rate, we'd be looking at something along the lines of 422.4 kobold hatched before the first of them reach breeding age and start contributing the population growth. Note: this also assumes we've only got adults, but that seems somewhat reasonable. Assuming even 75% of them survive to adulthood, that's almost 10x our current population. This is to say nothing of using magic to accelerate pregnancy or something. Our real issue is humans KNOW this - that we can outbreed and even outlive them - and thus will probably not exactly be in favour of giving us good relations if they think they can take us without serious losses by acting immediately. This is why I think building up our defences as much as possible is needed, to harden ourselves to losses that might well be coming.>It's better to kill them now and make the humans think that the swamps here are too expensive to invest in.Except my point is we probably can't. Suppose it takes 3 kobolds to actually threaten a human that is at least somewhat prepared (note, they're colonising a unknown region that is not easily habituated and is probably known for hosting monsters to at least some degree - assume they're armed and ready for something) then that means even a group of 10 humans requires almost every kobold in our colony to pose a threat.
>>5091023This is not a straight up fight. This is going to be ambush. The humans don’t know we’re here, we’ll have LOTS of traps ready and baphomet will certainly give us a power boost if we sacrifice to him before we battle the humans. Building up slowly is just going to prolong the problem for us and lose us the element of surprise.
>>5091027>This is going to be ambush. The humans don’t know we’re here, we’ll have LOTS of traps ready and baphomet will certainly give us a power boost if we sacrifice to him before we battle the humans. Building up slowly is just going to prolong the problem for us and lose us the element of surprise. If everything in your plan goes perfectly, sure. Fact is you need to find the humans, observe them long enough to figure out a viable ambush spot (since they won't follow bait most likely), fill that spot with traps and then leave our warriors lying in wait for the humans to walk by and hope they don't notice us hiding. If you get spotted finding, observing, placing traps (or if they find the traps) or actually waiting to ambush, then not only does you plan suddenly risk complete failure (Humans retreat back to town to get aid from adventurers or guards) but even worse, we're clearly an out-and-out hostile force with no hopes of diplomatic solutions. Even in a ideal outcome for detection (ambush and traps ready), where the humans choose to fight us for whatever reason, I find it unlikely that their colony will just die with a whimper - as you said yourself, they've outside support and outside support minds outside interest. That means the same result as the above but with the only benefit being that we've plausible deniability that we killed their people.Fact is we've no idea how far away the humans are too - for all we know they're two days travel away which seems quite likely given how long it took our kobolds to wander this far into the swamp.

Assuming natural dangers we can augment with traps and such, and maybe lead some natural predators at their hunting/scouting parties and human settlements, and we can maybe stand a decent chance against them, maybe grabbing a couple of human slaves and sacrifices along the way. I'm also willing to bet that the humans may end up pissing off one or more of the swamp magi, which would benefit us, especially if we can get some magical assistance from them in pursuit of our common foe. Granted, it may not happen like that, but there are definitely more concerns and disadvantages going on in relation to the human's ignorance of the region, which we can exploit.>>5091027>>5091039Your both assuming that we'd go on the offensive in the hopes of a decisive battle, but I'm think more in terms of minor raids and the general whittling down of the enemy's forces and their will to fight. >>5091061>If you're thinking defensively, maybe resettling in the secret lair is prudent.Mm, I mean exploring away from the humans deeper into the swamp ain't a bad idea either - seeing as we're probably gonna want to expand that way in future anyway.>You also not considering the environment- it's a swamp with other dangerous creatures and magi living here. Assuming natural dangers we can augment with traps and such, and maybe lead some natural predators at their hunting/scouting parties and human settlements, and we can maybe stand a decent chance against them, maybe grabbing a couple of human slaves and sacrifices along the way. Oh I don't think we couldn't beat humans or something, my concern is the fact any losses we take currently are insanely huge for us: a single kobold currently is 3.125% of our total population. We lose 3 kobolds and that is basically 10% of our population dead. Thus I want to delay until we actually have some idea of how quickly new kobolds will be coming in past this point so we don't accidentally run out. Even if we traded perfectly with the humans kobold-for-human? A dozen and we're losing a third of our population.I'm apprehensive about anything that risks our lives currently - I've been suggesting camping out on safe options for a few turns to just get some breathing room. Humans, I think, are more dangerous than anything we've yet encountered since humans hold grudges, plan and call in allies. >I'm also willing to bet that the humans may end up pissing off one or more of the swamp magi, which would benefit us, especially if we can get some magical assistance from them in pursuit of our common foe. Frankly a fair and honest point - but I caution that we've no reason to believe that the witch who delivered her warnings wouldn't and hasn't done the same to the humans, seeing as she is the one who told us they are even here.>Granted, it may not happen like that, but there are definitely more concerns and disadvantages going on in relation to the human's ignorance of the region, which we can exploit. To be frank, the ignorance of the humans only dwarfs our own by a literal fortnight. That also presumes that they know nothing of the swamp like we did when we first arrived but I'd be willing to bet that they know a fair bit more than that - at the very least they must have reason to think settling here is smart.>Your both assuming that we'd go on the offensive in the hopes of a decisive battle, but I'm think more in terms of minor raids and the general whittling down of the enemy's forces and their will to fight. Think like the Swamp Vietcong would, not like a traditional fantasy milita force.Fair enough and perhaps that'd work but my fear is we've only got one settlement and about two-and-a-half dozen 'bolds: if they sent a force to attack us, they could breach our walls and do horrific damage before we can stop them even with our magic and dragon. I mean shit, imagine if they managed to destroy our eggs.
>>5090951>>5091061>>5091070A lot has been talked around here about what to do about the coming of the humans. The gist of it is that we are FEW ill-equipped bolts with a BABY dragon, so it's clear that we need to buy some time to have a better chance of not being wiped out. >Exploration/Write-In I suggest we move to the forest and ally ourselves with Reylas>3rd swamp mage>resides in the forest>unforgiving with those who meddle with his shit >Is always sleepingWe hopefully can convince him that the humans will mess with his shit (probably true) and we could stay there and watch over his shit while he sleeps if he let's us be there. Why the forest? >Good materials>Better for underground home>Far from humans>Only place that is not proven to be filled with horrible monstrosities What is keeping us in the swamp? A bunch of mud huts surrounded by a twin fence and a small fish farm? We can leave this be like an outpost, where the fish feed the few kobolds that stay here and if humans get too close they run back to safety as kobolds do.
>>5091712>What is keeping us in the swamp?Despite it being a Kobold Swamp Survival Civ? I imagine that Reylas may take us moving into his forest as meddling with his shit, and thd real question is how he'll treat us if we disturb his slumber. If he's just grumpy, no big issue, if he turns our scouting party into frogs, very big issue.Plus, image of us eventually building an Aztec temple in the Swamp and becoming fantasy Aztecs is stuck in my head, though I know that we're a long ways off of that.
>>5091736The forest is still technically the swamp my friend, Reylas is a swamp mage, it is still on theme just less mud and more trees. Also we need stone for those cool temples, we wont find it under the mud.About how he will react about us waking him you are right, but we have done more risky stuff for less gain. We could just raise a shrine to him there as we have to other fickle godlike creatures and wait for him to wake while respecting the forest and all that.
>>5091712>The gist of it is...Broadly the gist of it yeah.>I suggest we move to the forest and ally ourselves with ReylasI doubt we can achieve the latter - but the former might be possible. Frankly we should look into establishing outposts throughout the swamp since that'll make extracting the resources of the swamp and making areas safe from the larger predators (giant invisible death spiders for example) much easier.>Why the forest? The forest I'd point out may well take us further from our sources of metal and clay, both highly valuable goods for our further development. Also, we've no knowledge of what direction the humans are coming from so we can't say if the forest is far from them or not. Also the forest having not shown any horrible monstrosities doesn't mean it doesn't contain them - if it didn't, the horrible monstrosities from elsewhere would spread there as the new apex predators. You are right however, it ought to be easier to build underground there, but the simple fact is the water table will likely still be too high meaning any burrows would be near the surface at best.>What is keeping us in the swamp? A bunch of mud huts, a forge, three temples and a fish farm contained inside of a palisade that we know is close enough to our present resource extraction sites.
>>5091809I agree with you that establishing outposts is a must. The metal place kinda already has one now, as does the frog swamp we could establish one in the forest and use all tree, and move the bulk of the bolts to the one that proves more profitable and less dangerous. Having a place to flee if the humans are to well prepared or the traps don't prove to be enough is not a bad idea. >I doubt we can achieve the latter (ally with ReylasBoth other mages have been interested in bargaining, the lanky one just fought us because we kindof went back on our offering of a kobold and even then he presented us with a great reward after fighting him and then left us alone. So I see no reason this third mage would be impossible to work with if you don't mess with his shit.>The forest I'd point out may well take us further from our sources of metal and clayThe metal is west and the woods are north so if we go northwest we might find a place in the woods closer to that resource and use it as a more central location between outposts. Regarding the clay it's still swampy there, no reason clay should be rare there, we could even make the outpost on top of the first deposit we find there so we don't have to cart it, and if we are gonna burrow and use wood for the tunnels we don't need that much clay just enough for a furnace. >Also, we've no knowledge of what direction the humans are coming fromThis is true, I'm thinking if they came from the woods they would have no reason to settle on a watery swamp. Also if they come to the woods they will probably anger Reylas and die a horrible death. >burrows would be near the surface at best.Surface burrows are better than no burrows, and deeper into the woods the ground should be more solid from all the roots. >bunch of mud huts, a forge, three temples and a fish farm I'm not suggesting we abandon it, it's a great outpost site. The forge we can build another, the temples are really just small shrines/altars, the faith will follow us, we can build more worshiping places. Also let's not forget the forests have giant weasels, they look to be easier to domesticate than frogs and more useful as well. Weasels and kobolds are like goblins and wolves.
I think you guys are vastly overestimating the level of organization kobolds have here with all these big plans. We're already seeing some signs of disorder with only 30 kobolds who all live in one place.
>>5092096That's why we drill discipline into their skulls. That'll take, what? A hundred turns or so of cultural actions? It's doable.
>>5090967>>5090987>>5091014>>5091058>>5091712>>5091009>>5092018With the lumber you've gotten a new round of crafting is in order. It's so much better to work with this stuff than bent sticks and gnarled swamp tree. It's difficult to plan out the usage of the tree trunks you've gathered, but eventually you mark out which sections are to be used for what. Waste not want not after all. Slats of wood can be carved out and tied to the body for armor, and with the gators that you've gathered you have some scaled leather to add on to that as well. The benefit of being such a small species is that you don't need as much material to make apparel. The scaled cloaks make surprisingly good camouflage in the dreary gray mud too.By noon meal time, you're carving out spears when the second expedition comes back. Battered and dwindled in numbers but alive. The wounded seem nauseous and have rashes for some reason, but they do have treasures and information from their journey. The metal items are of a good purity, and can easily be melted to make spearheads at a minimal cost. There's other goods too, for instance three identical looking glass tubes with glowing red crystal shards in them. They seem like they have a purpose but you're not sure? They would make good treasures for the hoard either way. Also if they come to the woods they will probably anger Reylas and die a horrible death.I mean we've no idea where they're settling (meaning they could be going to the forest), where they're coming from or if they're even anywhere near us in real terms - we just know they plan on moving into the swamp somewhere, from somewhere in some quantity with some level of support. You decide to send out a little scouting team to the east to see if they can spot any human settlement group. Not the recently wounded of course, they're sort of out of it... And vomitting. It would probably be a good idea to have everyone practice up on their sneaking skills. Another perk of being small, you can skitter around all hard to see-like.And in your personal time, you see it fit to examine your little trinkets. These tube things are finely crafted for sure. Glass blowing was never really a craft kobolds mastered. And to get these fine detailings in the goldish metal... Uniform though, like its been mass produced for a purpose? You fiddle with it but the thing seems inert for now. That is until you touch a silver of metal into the caps trying to pry it open. A miniscule jolt of lightning shocks your claws and makes you drop the artifact. Whatever these things are they've got potential energy in them. Maybe you throw them at people and electrocute them?...The sap is a bit harder to explain. It's just a cup full of glowing goo and it's hard to tell what it does if anything at all. So, you take the most logical route and have a gullible kobold taste the stuff. Nothing much seems to happen, but then his eyes go wide and he falls over. He just lays there, but doesn't seem to be in pain. In fact, he just starts dumbly giggling while drooling some frothing blue stuff. Doesn't seem like he's dying just... On a trip as they say. A dozen kobolds are sent to prepare various traps and pitfalls in their predicted path. They seem quite alert from the far distance you can stay, you'll likely not be able to actually get close enough to do anything without getting noticed. While they get that done, you decide that it's time for another sacrifice. An alligator to gut and splay out is perfect. The extra meats from small game will help to feed the dragon too. Several hours later, the prey is in order, with one gator all prepared to sacrifice. As you stand there with your knife, you realize that you're not sure what you did last time or what to do now. It just sort of happened, but this time there's no impelling force to be found as of yet.>Canopic jar count: 5How exactly should you handle this?>Carve out the organs and leave the carcass at the shrine>Splay out meats and organs in some ornamental pagan fashion>Attempt a ritual with some sort of intent?>Directly attempt to commune with the god>Write-in
>>5095443>Splay out meats and organs in some ornamental pagan fashion>Cut our own hand and drip our blood over the meats and organs>Directly attempt to commune with the godI think mixing our own blood with the sacrifices is a good symbolic way to try to commune with baphomet directly.
>>5095458Sure, I'll try anything once.

>>5095443>Give our offering instead to someone who's present when we need himKrish’gah, Patron of kobolds, God of traps and master of stealth.>>5095458I have a feeling this will get us possessed and not in a good way.. Also if we want to sabotage the humans why are we praying to Rage axe in hand Bullman instead of Traps Mcstealthy Bolt?
>>5098096>Also if we want to sabotage the humans why are we praying to Rage axe in hand Bullman instead of Traps Mcstealthy BoltWhy not both?
>>5098096I would change my vote to this if I didn't think changing deities mid ritual would infuriate one or both.
