They tell stories of steel in every land Men live. Tales of knights and heroes, of brave adventurers and wise kings. Those are the tales sung by bards and minstrels. But the stories you hear are different. Tales of gold to be had. Of opportunities the next Kingdom over. Of contracts sealed with blood. For you are a sellsword.

You are Joseph Saintswood, a former butcher from the Eastern Frontier turned a blade for hire. Where your life was once only dictated by the harvests and the seasons, now you live and fight in Gothyka, a land ruled jealously by Knights and Lords. Ever since running afoul of the local law, unjustly you might add, you were rescued by a rogue by the name of Hadhan who recruited you for the Black Hounds, an infamous sellsword group. Since then, you have journeyed with his party in their commissioned Duty against the Count Visihrod in a feudal dispute between him and the Black Hound’s employer, Duke Grenzheim.

Currently, you and Hadhan’s party are in the keep of a Lord Zuflucht, apparently an acquaintance of Hadhan. Why Hadhan has an acquaintance of a bannerman of your enemy, you did not know. But then again, you did not know why the conflict was being fought in the first place …

================================================================================

You had stayed in Lord Zuflucht’s keep for three days. In that time, you had rested and recuperated. A healer had seen to your injuries, treating them better than Schni had been able to. Now you were no longer at risk of reopening your wounds entirely. These few days with no need to travel or worry about where your meals were coming from had given you a chance to rest and maintain your gear more thoroughly. You now felt more ready for further battles than you ever had before. Which was good because it wouldn’t prove long before the next one …

But in the meantime, you’ve spent your days …

Going into the rules

Rolls
Rolls correspond to one of your character’s stats or skills and are decided by 3 rolls of 1d100. In a high-difficulty roll, the highest roll is taken. In a low-difficulty roll, the lowest roll is taken. Vice versa for a medium roll.
If a roll is lower than your character’s stat, it is successful. If a roll is higher than your character’s stat, it fails. Items are important for situationally increasing the values of these stats. This is not a game for playing naked.

Currently our character’s stats are:

Strength - 10
Agility - 10
Dexterity - 10
Toughness - 20
Intelligence - 10
Perception - 10
Charisma - 10
Willpower - 20

Criticals
A critical is either a 1 or a 100, respectively a critical success and failure. Criticals take precedence over other rolls. They are treated as an auto success/failure.

Fate Points
Fate points are points that can be used to either re-roll or auto-succeed a roll. Spend a fate point to reroll and burn one to auto-succeed. Your character has a number of fate points that regenerate once every chapter. However, burning a fate point gets rid of it permanently.

Critical successes can be saved to regenerate one fate point. However, to earn new fate points, accomplish acts that adhere to your code even in times where that code is tested. But the more fate points you earn, the harder it will be to earn them.

Be warned that fate points cannot be used to accomplish the impossible.

You’ve spent your days working in the kitchen as a butcher. What’s more, you’ve been teaching the women of the castle a little of your trade so that they won’t be left without one when you leave. The women seemed to appreciate a man willing to work in the kitchen and over the last few days, you had built up a rapport with them.

But one day, Hadhan summons you to a chamber of the castle where the entire party was present. Caelan, the Chief Steward of Lord Zuflucht is present as well.

“New orders from the Company.” Hadhan announces. “We’re to investigate the caravans carrying weapons away from the battlefield …”

“Hold off.” Farthorn growls, “Before you continue, why is that castleborn here?”

“I’m here to ensure that my Master’s interests are represented in your plans.” Caelan says, “You are guests under his roof after all.”

“The way I see it, Castleborn are guests on the land of their fieldborn.” Farthorn says.

“Hold your tongue, Farthorn.” Hadhan warns, “We are discussing business.” Farthorn relents.

“I hope this won’t be another pleasant outing in the woods.” Ingmyr grumbles, “I’ve been cooped up in this castle for days and my axe hasn’t tasted a worthy opponent in months.”

“You know that danger is never far away with me, my friend.” Hadhan reassures Ingmyr.

“If I wanted to be a bodyguard I would have joined the Iondan Stewardsguard.” Ingmyr growls. But he does not complain further.

“And you Schni? Anything to say?” Schni shakes her head, remaining silent.

Hadhan turns to you …

>What is the pay like?

So happy to see this back so soon Noir! I am very hyped!!

Interesting to see that Farthorn of the castleborn / fieldborn class divide may be a proto-communist hehe. I am trying to imagine if he is Far-thorn (makes me think of woodsman ranger archetypes) or the more worrying Fart-horn...
>>
>>5076750
The proto-communist is a caveman anon. Not even joking.
>>
“What does the pay look like?” You ask. In the end, that was all you cared about. You weren’t violent by nature and if not for the silver, you wouldn’t fight at all.

Hadhan sucks in his breath. “I must admit, this Duty might be lacking in loot. We are mostly traipsing around the countryside. Which is why I’ll pay a little something extra for those who come along.”

“I haven’t even been paid for the last Duty.” You point out.

“I haven’t either!” Hadhan exclaims, “Do you expect the the Company to send me silver when we’re in enemy territory?”

“Why don’t you pay us out of your pocket then?” You ask.

“You think I carry enough silver to pay five men?”

It seems that you were stuck with not being paid for now. But if you left the Black Hounds, you doubt you’d ever see your silver.

“From what I hear, I understand that you are about to undertake a scouting sortie.” Caelan interjects, “It cannot be known that you are being hosted by my Master.”

Hadhan nods. “We will take a roundabout path.”

“Another trip through the woods?” Farthorn asks.

“No.” Hadhan spreads out a map. “We’ll be passing through this village here and staying at an inn a couple days. We can observe any caravans passing through and gather information that way.”

Caelan nods. “That sounds acceptable. Hide your weapons until you’re out of my Master’s territory.”

Hadhan turns to you and the party. “We leave at noon so take care of any business you have before then. Sharpen your weapons, stock your supplies, kiss your sweethearts goodbye, what have you …”

You leave for the kitchen to be able to get one last hot meal before leaving, but as you round the corner, you overhear Hadhan and Caelan’s conversation and pause. Impulsively, you decide to listen in.

“Shipments of arms, Sellsword, what does that mean?” Caelan says.

“Could be a lot of things.” Hadhan says, “His new liegelord is amassing an army to the west of the front lines. Or maybe he’s struck a pact with the goblins in the woods.”

“But why would Count Visihrod not tell us of this?” Caelan says, “My master has been a leal bannerman for a decade!”

“Perhaps he knows of our plot. Or perhaps he suspects.”

“In that case, he’ll send a representative to investigate.”

“Or a spy …”

The rest of the conversation turns to more mundane matters such as the village you would be staying in as well as any opportunity for pay. You wait until the conversation ends. You glimpse Caelan leaving the room, perhaps to converse with Lord Zuflucht. Hadhan stays in the room for a while longer.

“If you wanted to have listened in, I wouldn’t have stopped you …” Hadhan says aloud, “No need to sulk in the shadows, Joseph.”

“How did you know it was me?” You ask.

“I heard one set of footsteps peter out as you left. Farthorn and Schni wouldn’t have gotten caught and Ingmyr is too large and unsubtle for any attempt at skullduggery.” Hadhan explains.

You hadn’t expected to have been found out so easily. Perhaps you should ask Schni for some lessons on how to be stealthy …

Down in the cellar where you had originally entered was the cart, except it was now piled with hay and provisions. At a glance, it seemed exactly like the cart of a traveling farmer, but under the hay in wrapped oilskins were the party’s armor and weapons. The Party stood about the cart, dressed in commoner’s clothes. Ingmyr wore the thick clothes of a lumberworker, having exchanged his battleaxe for a woodaxe, although it looked just as fearsome in his hands as his weapon. Farthorn was dressed as a forester, bearing his bow but no sword at his side. Schni was dressed as a peasant girl, although the way she carried herself belied a grace and poise few peasant girls would have possessed. She had found a commoner’s wool cloak to replace the fine, silky thing that she usually wore. Even inside, the hood was up. And as for Hadhan …

“What the hell are you supposed to be?” Farthorn asked. Hadhan was dressed in dirt-stained clothes reinforced by patches of leather. He bore a rusty old hoe over his shoulder. On his head was a broad, frayed straw hat.

“Why, I’m a humble, hardworking farmer as you would meet in any field in Gothyka.” Hadhan exclaimed.

Chapter 2: Count Visihrod’s Arms

The Wagon rolled down the muddy paths of Gothyka’s countryside. Hadhan sat at the reins while you, Schni, and Farthorn sat with the cargo, idly watching the countryside roll by. Ingmyr was too large to sit in the wagon, his weight would have sunk it into the mud. So he walked alongside it. Fortunately, this meant that whenever the wagon got stuck in a rut, he was quick to lift it out again.

After some time, the party comes across a crossroads where you encounter a fellow traveler

>A peasant, a local by the looks of it

Please let the mounted Knight's sigil be a crossed hammer and sickle, ie the secret proto-communist Soviet Templar Brotherhood to which Fieldborn Farthorn has sworn eternal fealty. Also the Commissar-Knight's name is Sir Stalin.

No not really I would be intrigued with any of these choices. Is Joseph supposed to be wearing a disguise as well?
>>
>>5080717
He's dressed as a butcher. Also, are you voting for Knight?
>>
>>5080748
Sure - perhaps the knight can provide some more political intrigue background... or the five sellswords should take him and loot his armour. It will be like the historical Battle of Courtrai when we teach the foolish mounted knights the power of fieldborn peasants hehe...
>>
>>5080748
Would Joseph previous sellsword experience afford him the knowledge of whether knights fight dismounted in this setting (post 1400 Hundred Years War counter tactic vs massed longbows) or are lance charges still a thing? (pre 1400 etc) Not sure if Joseph has seen enough of warfare to know this.
>>
>>5080789
>>5080717
A low level knight calling him papa stalin?
Stalin should be the name of the enemy lord.
>>
>>5080789
Joseph would know that knights fight mounted but can sometimes fight dismounted.
>>
>>5080801
nooo I am taking this setting seriously, no anachronisms or memes are allowed hehe. Especially after Noir has chosen a beautiful historical picture to illustrate this Chapter. This setting is going to be a hardcore medieval simulator (+goblins and dark elves), no communist knights permitted. Still we can have peasant rebellions or Jacqueries, they did happen during the Hundred Years War.

As we are in a three way tie I am going to explain this quest's policy when this happens. The first five votes will be taken or as many votes until one of the options wins.

>Why not just roll for the option?
I've seen quests before that just turned into the QM rolling for every decision and it was just not fun for me.

If anyone has complaints you have until I post the next update to raise them. I'm running this quest for you guys after all.

Trapped in a muddy divot in the road is a small cart, colorfully painted and covered with a canvas canopy that looks more like a tapestry than the utilitarian covering for keeping out the rain. It’s inside is laden with samplings of every imaginable product from a harvest market and more that you can’t recognize. It’s as if the occupant of the cart simply bought and resold everything in a market that caught his fancy.

Close by, you spot the cart’s owner. A squat halfling, barely more than the height of a child, dressed colorfully from head to toe save for his hairy, hornlike feet that sank into the mud with no complaint from him. He was currently tugging at the reins of a pony, trying to free his cart from the mud.

You knew of the Halflings and had even met a few before. A peoples short of stature and hardy of foot, they were known to have a love of farming, food, and the noxious herbs they smoked in their pipes. The majority of them hailed from faraway Dwarfhome, but there were small communities of them scattered throughout Gothyka, most notably in Tilland to the Southeast. A pleasant and mild-mannered peoples, they still mostly lived in their own communities due to a few of their less pleasant traits, such as an inquisitiveness and most famously, a complete lack of common decency. But this one looked well behaved.

He was muttering quiet curses until he notices you approaching.

“Greetings, friends and fellow travelers.” He says, wiping a sweaty forehead with a grimy lace handkerchief, “I am Blotto, traveling merchant by trade. Normally, I’d be more mobile, but as you can see, I seem to be stuck in a rut. But if you’re here, might I interest you in some excellent cinnamon straight from the spice markets of Iondos?”

Ingmyr seems to ponder this for a while, before finally speaking.

“I traveled to the South for glory, to pay the Iron Price, and to make a name for myself with my strength. My strength isn’t something to use for lifting carts out of the mud.”

And with that, the matter was settled. You had tried and that was enough for you.

“I appreciate it, Goodman Talling.” Blotto says, “You helped me when no one else would. I’ll manage on my own, the noonday sun will dry the mud. You needn’t worry about this halfling anymore.”

“The Gods be with you then.” You say, turning to leave. But to your surprise, Hadhan walks up to the Halfling.

“You said you were selling cinnamon? How much?” Hadhan asked?

“Three silvers per pound.” Blotto said.

Hadhan whistled. “That’s quite cheap.”

He counted out the silver and handed it to the Halfling. In exchange, the Halfling rummaged around his cart and handed Hadhan a bag stained orange-red. Hadhan handed you the bag. “Some spices for my cook.”

One silver was enough to feed a family for five days. And Hadhan had just spent three because he was bored by the salt and pepper you carried. You were sure now that the bastard could have paid you if he wanted to, he just hadn’t wanted to do it out of his pocket. Well, you’ll have to have faith that Hadhan wouldn’t be able to gather a band of such skilled fighters if he didn’t at least pay them eventually.

In the meantime, you might as well see what the Halfling is offering.

>You have used 10 coppers. You now have 40 coppers.
>Joseph has new affect: Pipe and Pipeweed
You spot an interesting object in the corner of the cart. A curved wooden pipe the length of your forearm with a leather pouch attached to it.

“What is this?” You ask Blotto.

“Oh that? It’s a Pipe and a bag o’ pipeweed.” Blotto explains, “Tallfolk tend to not take kindly to the smell, but it’s as sweet as springtime to me. Pipeweed is much better than drink anyhow. It won’t fuck up your liver or give you a gut, the smoke is as smooth as butter, and while drink makes folks want to fight, a good bowl o’ Pipeweed’ll just make you nod off after a bite to eat. And if you don’t like smoking, it’s a good flavoring for plenty of foods too.”

You were intrigued. “How much for it?”

“Ten coppers.”

All that for the price of a meal? You were sold.

“Be warned, burning pipeweed smells like a skunk dying of dysentery.” Hadhan warns you.

“You should have warned me earlier!” You exclaim.

Hadhan shrugs “It’s always worth watching someone try pipeweed for the first time.”

In the end, you supposed the party weren’t entirely brigands. At least no one had robbed the Halfling. The party continued down the road before stopping for the night. It was still another day’s journey to the inn where you would be hiding.

Hadhan whistles as he sees you roll out your bedroll. It’s an improvement over the one you used to have, thick and soft and lined with wool. “Since when did you get that?”

“Haven’t you heard?’ Farthorn says, “Joseph has been making nice with the woman in the kitchen. Why, he’s practically one of them.”

“If I knew the kitchen women would pamper me, I’d work as a scullion too!” Hadhan says, “Although, I’d make nice with the kitchen women in a different way …”

“You should know that many of the women working in those kitchens tend to be wives and mothers.” Schni interrupts.

“So? I like a woman with a bit of substance to them. Young maidens are all such skinny things.”

“There is no conquest like love.” Ingmyr muses, “And there are many kinds of love. A gift is as well won as any trophy from battle.”

The party banters as it sets up the camp for the night …

The first step to getting kinda good at something is to be kinda sucky at it.

Ingmyr is right tho. Some of the strongest love I've felt from another person has been the act of preparing, cooking and having meals with them. Natural intimacy. The fact that the kitchen ladies got us a quality bedroll is a very thoughtful gift. Never underestimate a good rest. We'll have to visit if we go back.

I forgot that we're in a new thread and I need to repost the rules for combat. How silly of me.

Combat

-- Rolls --
In combat, instead of successes being determined by rolling under your stats, it is determined by if your roll is closer to being under your stat than your opponent’s roll to theirs. If your roll is under your stat, you land a successful wound on your opponent. If both of you roll under, the one who rolls under by more’s action succeeds.

--Initiative--
The central mechanic of fighting is initiative, which controls whether you are attacking or defending. At the beginning of the combat, you and your opponent(s) roll dexterity and the victor gains initiative for the beginning of the fight. However, initiative can be lost.

If initiative is not gained or lost in the round, it will be reassigned with an agility check.

-- Turns and Wounds --
If the attacker succeeds in their roll, they damage part of their opponent’s toughness. Once toughness reaches below 10, the defender must succeed on an independent willpower check to continue fighting. If toughness falls below 0, the defender receives a critical wound where a potentially disfiguring or lethal injury is selected from a wound chart. Alternatively, a dice roll of 1 results in giving a critical wound while a 100 results in receiving one.

If an attack is landed while defenseless, you receive a wound that reduces your toughness by 10 until the wound is healed. Strength Actions reduce your toughness by 20. Landing a blow on a defenseless opponent cedes the initiative to the opponent next round.

1/3
>>
-- Actions --
In combat, every turn you have four possible actions to take tied to your four physical stats. Every action plays itself out differently depending on whether or not you have the initiative.

Strength Action - A heavy blow that does twice the toughness damage. All strength actions are full actions.
- With initiative, it gives the initiative to the opponent the next turn
- Without initiative, it is a desperate attack that leaves you defenseless next turn
Agility Action
- With initiative, it is a half-action outmaneuvering of the opponent that either lets you control your range or opens their defenses for the rest of the turn.
- Without initiative, it is a full-action desperate dodge
Dexterity Action
- With initiative, it is a half-action skillful blow that opens up combos
- Without initiative, it is a half-action parry that negates an enemy attack
Toughness Action
- With initiative, it’s a regenerative full-action that recovers toughness
- Without initiative, it is a full-action that tanks an opponent’s blow in return for seizing initiative the next round.

Defenselessness is a state where you cannot take actions. This also serves as a window for the other person to complete an objective outside of the fight, such as grabbing or throwing an object or running away.

If you have a half-action left, you can move in and out of range of an opponent, use any abilities you have or roll intelligence, perception, charisma, or willpower.
Intelligence - Gain a small buff to actions until parried or rendered defenseless
Perception - If on the defensive, gain a large buff on the current and next turn
Charisma - If on the offensive or your opponent is below 10 Toughness, taunt your opponent, reducing their willpower. If willpower drops below 0, they can no longer fight.
Willpower - Regain a small amount of willpower.
>>
-- Gear --
Weapons buff different stats, have different weight classes, and different grades of quality. They can also have attributes and abilities.

A weapon can only be defended against by a weapon of the same weight class or higher, or parried by a weapon of the same weight class, or one weight class lower with an underroll, or two weight classes lower with a critical. Otherwise, debuffs for the turn are inflicted ranging all the way to an automatic critical wound.

Weapons also have optimal ranges and suffer debuffs when outside of those optimal ranges.

The other major piece of gear is Armor which provides a flat damage reduction.

To take our Main Character’s gear for example.

Weapon: Unarmed
Damage: 1d5
Weight: Light
Quality: Shoddy (-3 debuff)
Range: Grappling/Knife
- Unable to kill opponent
- Defending against a weapon above light class or sharp, take 1d3 damage for every weight class.

Armor: Aketon
Armor Points: 10
Weight: Light
Quality: Common
Attributes
Textile Armor - Piercing and Heavy weapons will ignore it’s AP
Warm - +3 buff against cold damage, -3 debuff against heat damage

No problem Noir, thanks for listening. If you don't mind, I'd like to keep the fight going until we've already taken our free action from >>5091168, if you don't mind.

I know the point of training, but the fight is uninteresting when you already know the way it's gonna go- us struggling to get into range, Hadhan staying out of it, Hadhan attacking us, us tanking it and being beaten down little by little, rince and repeat until we either get in range for a Hail Mary Strength Action or Hadhan wises up and eventually commits a devastating combo. Maybe one of us crits, and that'll be the only way for us to 'win' if we're that lucky. Maybe in a couple level ups we stand a better chance at betting the bastard, but I'm already demoralized as to our chances at beating him and actually getting something useful from the effort.

The sun is setting. You’re wiping the sweat from your forehead from a productive session of sparring when you see a figure approaching in the distance.

“Hadhan, isn’t that someone coming down the road?”

The rest of the party glances down the road. Farthorn squints. “Isn’t that the halfling from earlier?”

“You have good eyes.” Hadhan compliments.

As the figure grows, you can make out more details. A short, squat figure. Gaudy clothing. A crossbow clutched in his hands. He was looking back over his shoulder so much that he didn’t notice the campsite until he practically stumbled into it.

“My friends!” Blotto declares loudly, “You must help me! They took my wagon! Brutes! Savages!”

Blotto excitedly babbles incomprehensibly for a few more minutes. You notice that the frilled collar of his doublet has wilted from sweat … and blood.

“.. And Gold! I’ll give you gold!”

Hadhan’s ears perk up at this. “Gold, you say? Please, calm down friend. Have a seat by the fire. Are you wounded?”

“Just some small scrapes.” Blotto says, sitting down by the fire.

“So. What was this about gold?”

Blotto takes a deep breath. “Goblins … They attacked me and my cart. I barely escaped. Please, you have to help me get it back.”

“And why would we help you?” Hadhan asks.

“You’re mercenaries, right?’ The Halfling says, “That giant over there, he speaks with a Nordfolk accent. the Archer’s from Rosland. I spent a decade in Iondo’s markets, I know all the accents. Aren’t any Nordfolk in these lands except if they’re sellswords. Look, I’ll pay you in gold, the gold I have in my cart …”

“Sounds like a good venture.” You say, “But I want my pick of what I find in the cart.”

Blotto sighs before relenting. “Fine. Have your pick. Just help me get my cart back, it’s my entire livelihood.”

You look around at the rest of the party.

“I won’t say no to a profit,” Hadhan declares, “It’s just goblins.”

“I don’t like it. Goblins usually don’t attack before dusk.” Farthorn says, “. If they’re that bold, the colony might have grown to have started taming wolves. If they get your scent they’ll never forget it.”

“How about you, Ingmyr?” Hadhan asks, “Are you going to fret and worry like an old woman?”

“Someone has to keep Farthorn company.” Ingmyr rumbles.

Schni wordlessly gets up and sheathes her knife.

Hadhan digs into the hay of the wagon to retrieve his broadsword. You do the same, retrieving your falchion. You consider retrieving your aketon and crossbow as well, but if someone saw you with a crossbow in the dead of night, they’d think you a poacher. You retrieve your armor. You doubt you’ll need more than your falchion to kill mere goblins, but even a goblin could manage a lucky strike that could wound you badly if you didn’t wear your aketon. If you hide it under your traveling cloak, no one will notice it unless they look closely.

“Lets go.” Hadhan announces.

By the time the Party departs for Blotto’s cart, the sun has disappeared beyond the horizon. It’s a long trek to where the cart was and even in springtime the night is cold, and you are soon glad you brought your traveling cloak along.

But eventually, you come across the cart. It was lying turned over off the road, good spilled out over the fallowing field. A band of goblins had lit a fire with the ruins of the cart, although you could see some crates burning in the fire as well. The Halfling’s pony had been slaughtered and spitted above the bonfire, with some Goblins messily tearing into hacked off limbs and the pile of entrails that lay on the ground.

“Fritter.” Blotto moans quietly in grief.

“I count fifteen goblins.” Hadhan whispers, “Five for each of us then.”

“Wait, what’s that?” Schni points out a larger goblin in the midst of the group. He was larger than the others, the size of a skinny youth, and held an iron spear as well as an iron helmet. You recognized that helmet, it was the one the Town Guard you had killed had been wearing.

“Some special kind of Goblin. Their chief maybe?” Hadhan guesses, “Dammit, damn Farthorn and his womanliness, right when we could use ‘em.”

“What do we do now?” You ask Hadhan.

Hadhan snorts. “We attack. They’re just goblins. The fire and cart form a wall. We can use it to divide the beasts in two. We’ll attack from three sides. I’ll form an anchor point where the goblins are divided. Schni and Joseph, you take care of the rest. Halfling, stay put and don’t make any noise.

The party splots up and you sneak forwards into position. But just as you are sneaking forwards, you spot a goblin with it’s loincloth down. It had wandered away from the it’s group to relieve itself. It turns it’s head. You can tell that it sees you …

You manage to catch the Goblin with your falchion. The tip shears through it’s thin ribcage. It dies immediately. You haven’t even pulled the blade out before the light fades from it’s goatlike eyes.

Even in death, it manages to fart as it sprawls out on the ground. Foul creature …

-- CONCLUSION --

1/1 Goblins KILLED

================================================================================

Well, you weren’t completely fucked anymore. You still didn’t know why Farthorn feared Goblins so much. All you had to do was be a little more careful.

You sneak closer to the bonfire. Goblins really were loathsome creatures. The more you watched them, the more they disgusted you. They were like perversions of children, cunning and mischievous in their movements, constantly speaking their uncouth, high-pitched tongue amongst themselves, squabbling over food and loot at any opportunity. It was almost sick watching such childish figures with such monstrous heads, all leathery skin, scarred ears, and needle-like teeth. They either went naked or wore shapeless clothing sewn from hides, pelts, and pieces of stolen human clothing, often stained with some filth you could not identify. They tore into their meals half raw like animals, blood and grease running down their chins. Did the creatures have no understanding of cleanliness?

Soon Hadhan would give the signal to fall upon them. You almost relished the thought of putting the lot of them to the sword. And sure enough there it is. You heard it, a high pitched whistle. The signal!

With fifteen goblins, you’d be at risk if you charged into the fray. You wouldn’t be able to cover all your blind spots. So you decide to hang back and take potshots with your crossbow.

Your crossbow was a light hand-spanner. While that decreased it’s power, the weapon was still intuitive to use. All you need to do is point and pull the trigger. You take aim at a goblin …

- Joseph missed (Target 10)

Your quarrel sails over the heads of the goblins, hitting none of them. You bite back a curse. Perhaps the crossbow wasn’t as intuitive to use as you had thought.

One goblin notices the arrow and picks it up. It glances in the direction the arrow came from. It’s goatlike eyes spot you. It snarls, raising it’s weapon and alerting it’s companions to your presence …

… And then Hadhan and Schni charge into the fray.

The Goblins are thrown into chaos. Hadhan wades into them, hewing into the Goblins with his broadsword. Schni slinks around the perimeter of the camp like a predatory animal, catching any goblins that try to run. While they are distracted, you take the chance to reload your crossbow.

In the chaos, a goblin holding a plank shield raises his weapon, a crudely carved club, and rallies four other goblins to his side. Three holding spears and another holding a club. If you are forced to exchange blows with them, you’ll have to get in close to avoid being skewered by the spears.

They cautiously begin approaching you …

>>5105767
>Burn Fate Point to auto-succeed
Anything above easy is going to give us a hard time. So might as well burn a fate point to not get fucked.
>>
>>5105885
My problem with that is that fate point economy doesn't encourage burning to avoid injury, as once the FP is gone, it's gone, and mining more if going to be a long and exhaustive process that isn't worth the effort to focus on, so we're likely stuck at the amount of fates points we got. I just don't see the point in burning them when they're already going to be so rare to begin with.
>>
>>5106292
I have no problem burning a fate point here because, currently, we have three gobbos rushing us and one of them is better armed and armored than the others. Burning a fate point could help us survive the beatdown we're about to take.
>>
>>5106658
So could rerolling. The problem isn't surviving this beat down, the problem would be surviving future, higher level threats. Simple put, using a Fate Point now comes at the cost of not having it when we need it later, and I think were more likely to survive a goblin beatdown than we would suvive getting cut down on an actual battlefield.

I don't make this determination lightly, because getting hit here will suck balls for the remainder of the thread.

Actually, I'd argue the opposite. If we don't use the heater shield when we do a Toughness Action, what would be the point in carrying one in the first place? Shields would be almost exclusively a Dexterity focused items, which renders the main use of a shield- to tank damage- totally useless. I don't see how that would make any sense.
>>
>>5106848
You make a good point.

Proposed rule change. A shield is active in toughness checks, but it's AP only comes into play if you succeed on your roll.

Versus what we have now where a shield increases dexterity and protects you when you underroll on toughness checks.

You have lost a fate point. You now have 3/5 Fate Points.

Yea, gonna need a lot more information on the wound tables and mechanics when it comes back up if you don't mind Noir. I feel like I've been shanghaied, but that only because I honestly don't know what's going on.

To break it up

Wound location
1-2 Head
3-4 Arms
5-6 Torso
7-8 Waist
9-10 Legs

For the Torso
1-2 Instant Death
3 Bleeding
4 Gaping chest wound
5 Destroyed back
6 Disembowled
7 Ruptured spleen
8 Broken rib
9 Collapsed lung
10 Knocked down

All the other wound locations have similar wound severity tables with similar matching severity.

But the stone dagger had a trait where it cannot crit wound through armor so your armor took the crit instead.

Thank you for explaining, this make much more sense. Don't know how any reasonable person would ever trade a Wo3 result on the wound table for a fate point, especially with instant death on the table, but maybe I'm overthinking that point.

Recovered Toughness - 14

The Goblin’s stone knife broke snapped against your aketon. It immediately jumped off and ran away. The Goblin on your head with the club jumped off at the same time, afraid of being abandoned by it’s companion. You were free.

But so were the two goblins …

You have 14/20 Toughness left

Goblin Rolls: Underroll

You try to run after the Goblins, but they’re slippery creatures and have soon disappeared into the night. Curse them. It was like trying to run after mischievous children. Children that had tried to murder you …

Not to confuse the issue, but don't we have an Agility of 10? Shouldn't there be one success before the goblins escape?
>>
>>5119033
You underolled but they also underolled. It's still combat, you don't automatically succeed because you successfully underoll. It's still compared to the rolls of the enemy.

For a second, you think about chasing after them. But you quickly abandon the idea. Goblins were slippery creatures and chasing after them in the dark would only get you stabbed in the back.

-- CONCLUSION --

You have 14/25 Toughness
You have 3/5 Fate Points

3/5 Goblins SLAIN

================================================================================

You look over the battlefield. Hadhan and Schni had finished their fights quite handily. Dead goblins littered their campsite. Their chieftain had been backed into a corner by Hadhan and Schni.

“Joseph, done with your fight?” Hadhan asks.

“Yes, but two got away.” You reply. “Should I have gone after them?”

“Only if you think you could have caught them.” Hadhan says. “Schni, you’re used to the dark. Go.”

Schni nods and slips into the shadows. Without thinking about it, you take her place.

You stare at the Goblin Chieftain. He was wounded and battered.

“Manlings … Release me …” The Goblin growled. It’s voice was guttural, deeper than the squeals of the goblins you had fought before.

“Eh? A Goblin that can speak?” Hadhan laughs, “Tell me then, Goblin. Why should we do that?”

The Goblin hissed, but didn’t provide an answer.

Hadhan laughed. “How about this? If you can beat my man in one-on-one combat, then you may go free. Well Joseph? Willing to give this poor creature a chance at freedom? If you manage it, I’ll blood you on the spot …”

God, we need a new set of armor. What do you think our first action with initiative should be? Trying to attack, or simply regenerate our toughness?
>>
>>5120161
Should we open up with a crossbow shot? Though I doubt we have the training to use it effectively.

Personally, I'd say end the fight as soon as possible by attacking.

Alright anons, I don't want to begin a fight on page 10 so we'll pick up thread three with it. I promise I'll be back.

Sorry if this thread was a bit slower than the last one. Still, I'm greatly enjoying this quest!
