/qst/ - Quests

Gaol Quest: a text adventure occasionally illustrated.

For your various (alleged) crimes against the Eternal Empire, the High Magistrate had sentenced you to life, and thrown you into the Gongalla Gaol: the pit of despair, the mistake of architecture and magic, the continent-sized holding facility. Thankfully, as per the required humanoid decency act, you are issued your mandatory spoon... for what good it does.

PREVIOUSLY, ON GAOL QUEST

You are James Calaca, a violent rabble-rouser revolutionary who was thrown into Gongalla Gaol. There, you found allies: Petunia the ex-serial non-consensualist, Gobson G. Gobson the plucky goblin, and an amnesiac (?) yet sentient test dummy who you named Sierra, after a role model in your childhood.

Currently, you're following Gobson, who was smitten by Sierra's opponent, an orc named Ko, in a Goblin Beauty Pageant. Initially you thought Sierra was duped into a scam, but turns out not only you were wrong, but you also got a possibly necessary item to save Gongalla. You still needed to wait for the others to reconvene to get the plan rolling, though - but it seems like between a date with Petunia, turning a creepy shape-changer into Nemo, and getting involved in previously mentioned beauty pageant, some of them -should- be done with their business by now. But, in the meantime, you and Sierra are checking how Gobson's budding love life is going.
>>
>>5108352
"James, are you not confident that Gobson will get success on his wooing attempt?" Sierra spoke to you, intrigue in her eyes.
"Oh, I'm here for the entertainment, mostly. And maybe being a supportive friend if needed." You reply as you both tail Gobson as he heads for the Liquor Vendor's shop, where Ko is said to have been staying. The little guy is positively cheerful, singing a little goblin ditty about 'getting some, having fun, and getting lucky' all the way from the time you gave him the raptor teeth to now. From your vantage point, you see Gobson greeting Jerry, then Jerry letting him in. Getting closer to the door's edge, you see Ko looming in front of Gobson.
"You wanted to see me, twerp? This better be worth my time." Ko glares menacingly. Curiously, to Gobson's credit, he didn't flinch at all, just getting greener around the cheeks. He's being shy, you guess - which is going to be a problem if he'll be just standing there all awkward and peeking up every so often at Ko. Come on, Gobson!

The tension is so awkward that you wanted to pick a pebble and hit Gobson with it, but another part of you trusts Gobson wouldn't fudge this up. From your vantage point, you finally see Gobson holding up the necklace. "H-hi, I'm Gobson! I saw your match earlier an'-an'... you were so beautiful! That, an' your knockers too! So uh, I really, really like you, so I made this necklace for you."
His awkwardness is more charming than cringe, you guess, something that Ko also noticed. "Ah, you mirin'? I remember you, you were passed out at the end of the match, right? Well, I can feel you're honest with me. So, what do you want to do after this?" She says as she picked up the necklace. "Reminds me of traditional dowries back home."
Gobson blushes. "Well, if you wanna, let's go for a snack? Together?"
Your observation is silently interrupted by the presence of a certain imp- er, pint-sized succubi joining you on your stakeout. "Are you havin' fun shenanigans without me?" Desi whispers.
"Wait, how'd you find out about this?" You whisper back.
"Us Succubi have a nose for gossip, ya buffoon! Now shush, she could've heard us."
Which could be what just happened, as Ko pointed towards the doorway and asks Gobson, "Those doofuses friends of yours?"

You grin sheepishly while propping up a solid thumbs up. You got this, Gobson! The thumb signals, but the words from your mouth is, "He's a good gob, you shouldn't pass him up!"
Gobson blushes greener as Ko sighs. "Alright, runt, you got friends who watch your back, and I respect that. Now come on, where do you get some good grub over here?"
With Gobson's date secure, you figured it's time to give them some privacy, much to Desi's objection. "Come on you two, let's get back to Nanna's."
"Aw, why'd you hafta stop right when the going's good?!"
"I have no dissent either way." declares Sierra, who follows you as you reach the hut. Seems like Petunia's been quite busy, based on the traces of blue mushroom all around the place.
As you arrive inside, you are greeted by Petunia and Warden Bianca, with a half-operational Frank opened up in the middle of the room. "Ah hey handsome! We're almost done here, just a few finangling needed."
Warden Bianca nods, then looked back at Frank's open chestplate. "Back to the mushrooms - you say they're acting as a... power source?"
Frank replies, weakly. "Myes. I believe they thrive on magical fluxes, and act as a conduit or something similar."
"Them growing on your mana reservoir is bad, though... I've cut the excess growth so it doesn't overcharge you. How do we balance it out, so it doesn't overgrow?" Petunia muses.
"Well, you got those magitek cards, don't you? Think you can induce a feedback loop?"

"Well... while I don't doubt your skills, I think you should work with Bianca here. She's Frank's partner - well, ex-partner, so she should know any quirks of his." You arbitrate.
"Huh, yeah. Sounds good for me." Petunia muses.
"I agree, Frank here's been my... companion for quite some time, so I suppose I could help you there." Bianca officializes the occasion by shaking Petunia's hand.
"Well, good show of solidarity, ladies - but mayhaps we need to be a little bit more solutive in our actions, myes?" Frank pipes up.
You think about it. "Well, you said the shrooms overcharges Frank when it's overgrown, right? What about getting an extra battery port, so we can stick empty batteries there when he overcharges? At least until the shrooms can be trimmed."
Petunia and Bianca thinks about it. "Hmm, not a long-term solution, but good enough for now, I guess?" Petunia guesses.
"Yes, the goblins could have gotten a few empty batteries on hand." Bianca concurs.
As Petunia set to work on Frank, she looks at you. "So, what did you do while I was deep in Frank's inards?"
You tell her the whole deal. From worrying about Sierra, to the beauty pageant, and up to Gobson's crush.
"Whaaat, they have a beauty pageant here?! James, handsome, you gotta bring me there next time!" Petunia says in amazement.

"Y'know what, I'll keep it on me until you get fixed. Then we check it out."
Frank almost looks dejected. "Understandable, the risk of data corruption is possible. It's just... I feel so useless at the moment. I was built to serve to the best of my capabilities."
You think for a bit. "Alright, then, do you have enough power to find out where the nuns are? You do have something like that, right?"
Frank resolves into a grin. "Why yes, of course! The energy use is negligible." He then makes a fast burst of beeping noises. "Here they are, Sister Beryl and Delarue. Seems like they've just set out from the Ossuary, on their way back here... oh dear, it seems like they're in a spot of trouble." Frank then makes an audible click, and a holographic projection of a screen hovers in the air in front of him. The holo shows the nuns under attack by a sizable group of kobolds, most of them wearing burning candles taped on their heads and wielding burning wooden clubs.
"Are those the Pyrovore Cult!?" Bianca gasped in realization.
"Wait, why are they even near the Ossuary? Aren't they based further south?" Petunia asks, a confusion reflected in Bianca's eyes.
"Never mind that, how can we help them?!" You throw your own question into the fray. Strong as the nuns are, they're just two, and there's quite a lot of kobolds to fight.
"If I may... if you could refill me with some more mana, I could make a teleport sigil for one. Maybe two, if more mana is in supply. Or I could distract them using the overhead announcement system. Choice is yours."
Loking into the camera feed, you realize that there seems to be a weak point in the kobolds' encirclement.

"AIM FOR THE OPEN SPOT!"

Amidst the chaotic positioning and re-positioning of the kobold horde, you noticed one particular kobold wearing a headdress made of fire - seems like their shot-caller, or priest. The kobolds around him seems to be less densely packed together - a sign of respect? Or just careful to not get burnt? Anyways, there's that weak spot in the kobolds' formation. "Frank, quick, tell them to target the kobold with the fiery headdress!"
"Acknowledged, PA system activated. Ahem... To Sisters Beryl and Delarue! This is Frank, aim for their priest!"
It seems like Frank's announcement is heard, for there is a lull in fighting. "By the bone prophets, the PA system is working?!" Sister Beryl turns to Sister Delarue. "Very well, I authorize a single word. Aim at their heathen priest!"
Delarue nods, and breathes in.
The kobold priest seems to notice, and orders something in Koboldspeak. "Kinpetlachuilistli axkan! Tlaxitokatl!"
But it was too late. Delarue opens her mouth.

「GANGWAY」

The entire column was thrown through the air, the priest's fiery headdress extinguished from the Banshee howl. It carved a path in the formation, that wouldn't be possible elsewhere in the encirclement due to the number of kobolds. The nuns took to their feet and swiftly vacated the premises, as the kobold horde descends into utter confusion. Some are still standing around dazed, some try to reignite the headdress, and some gave chase, but the nuns sped with haste. Huh, strange, none of the kobolds have the ubiquitous collar and wrist clasps.

As you reach the edge of town, you are greeted by Paulo and his Black Badges cohorts. But why are they in combat ready positions?
"Hi, James! You might be wondering why we're high-strung like this. Well, I just communicated with the High Chiefs and suffice to say... they don't like the plan. More precisely, they don't like you being the leader of the plan." Paulo says, a hint of disappointment in his tone. "Just to let you know, I personally like your plan. Real workable. No hard feelings, yeah?"
"What?!" Disbelief streaks your face. "What else did they say?"

Whatever Paulo's trying to scheme, you will have none of it. At least, not with those hostile stances. "Pedro, now!" You roar, and soon enough the diminutive Rubeda brother swoops down from the roof, along with the G-Squad. They quickly fell upon the Black Badges, surprised that you have prepared such a contingency plan - in truth, you've been expecting this. That truce back then was too easy, genuine or not.

You quickly spring to action, closing the gap between you and the Black Badges to deflect one of their their cyborg, Tristan-K's, arm from aiming at you. A decision most fortunate, as his hand rockets from its socket - thankfully, up towards the ceiling.
Around you, the familiar chaos of battle ensued - you see glimpses of the big cyborg being swarmed by the two thieves' guild goblins, the gas-masked woman dropping her stun sticks trying to get the goblin girl from blocking her eyeholes, and Pedro clinging on Paulo's back.

"Wait, brother! Listen to what I had to say - !" Did Paulo just beg?
"I trusted you! Remember our promise before we were scattered to our battlefields?!" Pedro clings to his brother's back, and skillfully detaches Paulo's mechanical arm. "We promised to not become one of those sniveling adults! Those who do not understand our love for Petunia!"
"I- I-" Paulo stammered and stopped, as Pedro wrestled him down to the ground.

It seems like you have a slight advantage now, but as you know all too well, the tide of battle could shift at any moment.

Sometimes it's good to keep up the attack, but other times, you have to keep the element of surprise. A whistle from you, and the G-squad scatters, blending into the cubicle dividers. This sudden retreat greatly confuses the Black Badges, a few of them deprived of their weapons.

"Son of the bitch! Rascals took my stun batons!" The woman in the gas mask exclaims angrily.
Paulo, to his credit, calmly stood up. "Pedro! I don't like this, either! I don't wanna fight you!" He yells towards the cubicle hinterlands, voice trembling with emotion. "Truth is, I hated the High Chiefs! I wanna desert! Please, Pedro, I - I'm sorry!"
"Wait, really? We're going to go awol?" The big cyborg says in a half-whisper.
"Affirmative. This has been planned. High Chiefs are too corrupt to uphold the tenets of the Black Badges." Tristan-K states, matter-of-factly.

A seed of revolution needs to be nurtured, that's what Sierra told you. "Are you sure about that?" You yell from behind the cubicles.
"Yes! I'm sick of seeing them ignore problems in exchange for tribute and bribes. Of the way they extore their own members. I want to get out!" Paulo yells back. Well, he's still a good boy, on the inside.
You step out from behind the cubicles, followed by a concerned-looking Pedro. "Why stop there?" You ask. "Why not also depose them?"
Paulo looks to the ground for a bit, before looking straight at you with his remaining eye. "I'm not strong enough, myself. I'm afraid my friends here might die, or worse."
You extend a hand. "Well, everyone's going to die someday. The trick is to find a cause worthy enough to live for. If you're true to your cause, I'll even help you."

The Black Badges crew stood in mixed silence as Paulo reached out to shake your hand. "Yeah, for real. It's time justice - real justice - hits them in the face. So, truce?"
"Truce, for real this time." You say as your hands clasp in agreement.

Suddenly, a familiar voice attached to a familiar muscle mass makes itself known from behind the cubicles. "Wonderful, wonderful, but too bad there is no fightink!" Borges had somehow snuck up on you both.
"What the - Borges! Back already?" Paulo asks.

Paranoia notwithstanding, you motion towards Goblinton. "Well, if you say so. Come on then."
You nod towards the Rubeda brothers, who gather their groups and follow you towards Nanna's.

As you get settled in the accomodating abode of Nanna's, Borges looks around. "Huh, where are the nuns? They have very important role, where are they?"
"They're on their way. Had to fight some Pyrovore kobolds." You answer, looking to the side where Petunia's almost done fixing up Frank, while Bianca seem to have finished pointing the nuns to safety. "How are the nuns doing, by the way?"
Bianca lets out a huff. "They're safe, lostbtheir pursuers in the cubicles. Told them to go up via roof, should be nearing Goblinton soon." She straightens up, readying herself for the briefing. "Alright, what have you got, Dr. Borges?"

"Pyrovores eh? This is gettink interestink. Very well! For one thing, the Dead Numbers agreed to help, no questions." Well, that's a good thing. "I've got reliable intel that the broken anchor is somewhere in The Crack, but for its exact location, we'll be gettink there in a moment." Borges paused, then took out a small piece of paper. "So! Apparently we need some thinks to fix the anchor. Let's see... a lot of bones, an uncracked mirror, and a data crystal with an engram in it." Huh, sounds familiar... Borges hands the paper to Bianca. "The nuns might have some bones they could give us. Now, for the exact location of the anchor, Dead Numbers have two options. One is an untested device one of our scientists cooked up - or we use a Ghost Number."
"Ghost Number? What's that?" The mention of it piques your curiosity.

You don't want to burden the nuns with bones, they're already bringing the Necrologue and whatever bone the Church of the Eternal End hoards would probably be sacred and off-limits. "Nanna, do you know where to get a lot of bones?"
She seems to mull the question a bit. "Hmm, I've heard of the diggers encountering a layer of huge bones deep, deep below Goblinton, it could possibly stretch into the cubicle forest. If you're going to mine them, dearie, please don't do it right below Goblinton."
Ah yeah, it might destabilize the whole area. "Noted, Nanna. Now, what about this Ghost Number?" You turn toward Borges again.

"Oh, you want to use the Ghost Number, da?" He pulls up something from his inventory. In a more civilized age it would be used as a laboratory flask, but its feather, fern, and paper chain binding it makes it clear it is used for something else. That, and the preserved fingers inside it clearly indicates that this is something mystical.
"So, how does this work?" You ask, very interested in how the fingers got there.
"Well, is nothink - just pull the cork out and - "
A wisp of smoky something ("ectoplasm?" blurted Petunia) emerges from the bottle, and coalesces to a hooded figure with three white stripes.
"Everyone, meet Brody. Brody, meet everyone." Borges talks to the hooded apparition as if it's the normalest thing to do.
"Ey. So, whatchu want?" The phantom creaks.
"Well, I just want to introduce you to your future employers." Borges explains.
"Yee whatevs, but I gotta do somethin now that you opened the bottle. Gimme somethin to do, man."

Well, no sense in delaying him in his true task. "I want you to find a broken reality anchor, and guide us to it. Rumor has it that it's located near The Crack."
Brody shrugs its ethereal shoulders. "If yer resortin to Ghost Numbers it means this anchor ain't gonna be in normal space. Suitcher self boss, but it's gonna take time lookin for it. Coupla days to The Crack, coupla days lookin all over the astral layers, coupla days comin back. I ain't no genie."

You think about it. "Well, we'll be heading there soon anyways, after we dig enough bone from Goblinton. Can you meet up with us at The Crack when you're done?"
The apparition nods. "Yeh, workable. Seeya!" Brody slips out through the ceiling, a trail of dissipating ectoplasm lingering for a moment.
"Now we just need to wait." You ominiusly state.

Petunia emerges from the side room, small mushrooms falling from her hair and clothes. "Hey handsome! Good news, we fixed Frank! Well, as much as we can, though. Frank's still recovering, so Bianca's taking him to their room. We could look into that log disk tomorrow!"
You smile. "Nice job, Petunia!"
"Aw, it was nothing. Say, you want to uh, cuddle later?" Petunia blushes.
"Do you mean cuddle, or 'cuddle'?" You jest, which sends Petunia a-titter.

Your lewd banter grinds to a halt as the nuns step into Nanna's hut, battle-weariness and exhaustion making themselves obvious. "Oh, phew! By the One Spine, that was an ordeal!" Sister Beryl wheezes. Sister Delarue sighs in relief, the resulting breeze ruffling your shirt and hair. "We're here with the Necrologue - what did we miss?"

You recount, using your fingers as visual aid. "Let's see now... since you two were gone, we got a log disk. We just fixed Frank, so he can read that disk tomorrow. We also found out what we need to fix the anchor - an uncracked mirror, a data crystal with an engram in it, and a whole lot of bones."
Sister Beryl, although exhausted, nods. "I see. Do you require help with the bones?"
You motion for them to take a seat, and they oblige. "Maybe not, Nanna here told me there's a layer of bones below and maybe around Goblinton. Maybe you two could help me with... I dunno, consecrating it or something?" You notice that Sister Delarue slowly, slightly droops her head in tiredness. "But not right away. Get some rest, you two."
Beryl nods, and silently thanks you as the two nuns shamble down the stairs to their room. You turn to Borges. "Hey Borges, ever mined before? Come on, let's get digging."

Several hours and a deep shaft later, you and Borges have dug to the bone layer just outside of Goblinton using borrowed pickaxes. Nanna's right, there is a densely packed layer of nothing but vertebrae and tail bones, looking pristine and unfossilized as if the spines grew that way like roots. By now, some goblins have joined in, mostly transporting the bones you and Borges dug up, but there are some who went at it with pickaxes. You guess that you'll have enough bones in two or three days' time.

As you load another giant vertebra on a basket, you decide to call it a day. Who knew bone mining is such sweaty work? Returning to your room, you hold aside the curtain door. "Petunia, I'm ho-"
Oh, oh my! Petunia's rolled out the sleeping mat already, and is that -
"Hey, handsome. You know, I talked to Sierra about the beauty pageant - turns out they sell the sacred bikini replicas at the goblin market. She bought me one just like what she wore... So, how do I look?"
You don't know what to say, because suddenly the blood in your head rushed towards the... other head.

"You look beautiful." You say, as you look her in the eyes and held her hand in yours.
"Aw shucks, handsome." You motion for her to close the distance between your faces. Slowly, sweetly, you taste her lips, as she tastes yours, and the moment lasts for almost an eternity.

Well, almost, because you felt your rising tower hitting Petunia's buttocks. "He he he, excited, are we?" Petunia giggles sensually, as she gently pulls your pants and underwear down. You thought she's about to ride your throttle like this, but she keeps going lower, lower... OH! She's sampling your banana, vigorously. She's using her tongue too... and she's pacing the rhythm that edges you closer and closer, knocking on heaven's door, like the thumps on the wall. Wait, the thumps aren't from you or Petunia? Isn't the room behind you right now occupied by Frank and Bianca?

You don't know if it was because of Petunia's excellent skill down below or the blood migrating to your shaft, but at the moment you decide to knock back. Hey, it's only polite, right?

A knock, lost amid the more frequent thumps. But at the same time, Petunia ups her tongue acrobatics, polishing your spear left and right. The thumps escalated to a rapid pace when you try another knock, but Petunia coup de graces your edging efforts and thus erupts Mount James, sending its hot contents Petunia-wards.

Apparently you did more than just getting your rocks off, that last knock did more damage to the goblin walls than an Enforcer door ram. Even more surprising is the culprit behind the thumps - turns out, it wasn't just you and Petunia who decided to get feisty tonight.

"Oh my, oh dear! This is quite the awkward moment..." Frank says, straddled under a sweaty and clotheless Bianca. You don't have to guess that Frank has a special equipment installed down there. Bianca, covering her modesty, reddens in silence.
Petunia licks a bit of your mess as she chuckles. "So that's what *those* modifications are for, eh? I knew it, Bianca, you're a mechanophile!"

Quickly re-donning your pants, you went to find a thick fabric, a hammer and some nails to cover the hole. "There we go" you say as you finish pinning the last nail, feeling both embarassed and awkward from not being able to control your strength while being... busy, and from learning that Bianca and Frank is having that kind of relationship.
"Thanks. Also if you're wondering, it's very, very lonely being a warden, alright? Have a good night." Bianca's usually calm and steady voice cracks, revealing a more human side to her.

"Hey, handsome, you know... Bianca gave me an idea." Petunia grins conspiratorially. She gently pushes you down onto the sleeping mat and straddles over you, again.
"Nice idea..." you were about to say, when she seductively lowers her bikini bottom. The very sight of her eager beaver strikes you with newfound vigor down south. You can't wait anymore, the conquering worm needs to be unleashed! With both hands, you grab both of Petunia's roundness. "H-handsome! Wha-" Petunia was surprised, but a good kind of surprised as you ignite thrusters and achieved liftoff. Petunia bounces on the localized earthquake as your baguette repeatedly throbs her doughnut, a lipbite signaling that she's as turned on as you at this point. You vaguely remember her bikini top falling under the vigorous shaking, and of a softness on your hands.

As you shake the earth and reach heaven through very passionate loving, you feel like reality dissolves from the edges of your vision.

A moment passes, and still you float upon the mirror-black void. But then, your mind wanders, and plucks a thought for you to wonder: "What's Sierra doing right now?"
At once, you hear faint noises, coming ever closer and more distinct. A chant, a mantra, built upon plastic and steel. Its rhythm, industrial; yet it feels divine at the same time. You get the feeling that this might be a robot's idea of coming into existence.

GOSPODI, GOSPODI
LYUBIMAYA GOSPODI

No, wait. It's more about a consciousness emerging into being. The chants are prayers, the secret prayers that crash test dummies of the Eternal Empire utter mutely in their sleep. An awakening of sorts. You were briefly shown fragmentary glimpses - of being manufactured part by part. Of being boxed into a crate. Of being seated at an automobile, pristine orange gleaming under the testing bay lights. Acceleration, then - the moment of her birth, dummies kneeling in supplication as you emerge from the wreck fully conscious - an accidental divinity manifested upon the Eternal Empire's test bay.

GOSPODI, GOSPODI
LYUBIMAYA GOSPODI

Alarms, blaring. Men and women in black garb surround you. Then, suddenly, you'd been struck by a high voltage. Other men and women, in white, furiously taking notes on clipboards and dataslates. Your arms bound, a magic circle forming around your feet. Then, you are here...

You snap out of being Sierra. Really? Her very existence is a crime worthy of exile in Gongalla? The noise recedes, and the obsidian void returns. You feel like you can peek at another dream-scene before you need to wake up.
