>Tuck Anglerfish in that pocket to our near South while they repair (Green, pic related)
>After about 5 minutes, reposition slightly North East (pic related, Blue), face the tank South West and aim the gun West.

“I suppose that means we have to watch it for a little while,” you sigh as you think it over. “Anglerfish, you mind squeezing yourself into that little pocket just south of you for a little while?”

You see Saori pass the message on to Miho before handing her the radio.

“You think they’re going to come around the west?”

“Well, they have about ten minutes to do it,” you reply. “Might be expecting us to ignore it because it’s going to be out of bounds in about fifteen minutes.”

“Well, we have the drone around, so hopefully we’ll know if they try anything,” she replies. “We’ll move in a moment.”

They carefully mount all their tools on the tank and roll it behind the small building outcrop. As if on cue, there’s a groan from Leo followed by a translation from Axel.

“There’s smoke being laid headin’ west ‘n north of where we last saw the T-34,” he says.

“Two directions?” You ask.

“They might have a drone on ‘em like the one we shredded earlier,” Axel suggests. “Either way, I think it’s game time. We tell Anglerfish to face west while we face east and wait for em.”

“If they come down the middle?”

“We see ‘em and turn our gun,” he shrugs. “No biggie.”

Saori, ever reliable, passed on the entire conversation the moment she realised it was an important one and a moment later you have Miho giving suggestions as well.

“We should push out,” Miho suggests. “The smoke screen limits their visibility even more than ours so if we can be somewhere they don’t expect, we’ll get the drop on them.”

“Where too?” You ask as you watch Anglerfish team drop their tools again and restart their tank.

“We head south down one of the side roads to catch whatever’s heading west in the side or behind. You head east to head off whatever’s coming north.”

>Follow Miho’s plan and push out. (Green)
>Move so you can cover both directions and wait (Blue)

Alright then, this situation just got a lot more difficult. Green initially sounds like a good idea, but we have to account that, especially for the right green arrow, there is a large chance the T-34 gets there before we do, and even if they don't, it turns from a 2-on-1 into a 1-on-1, and I don't think the angles provided give us much advantage, even if they don't expect us to be exactly there. They aren't exactly flanking positions, unless the T-34 is going all the way West, which I'm not comfortable betting on.

The previous plan (Yellow) of moving North East and aiming west just got a lot more perilous, since that would require moving the drone North to spot if they are coming from the Center or East, and would give us a much shorter warning. A thought that comes to mind is have Anko halt repairs and camp that corner, while we watch East from the Yellow position. Anko would have a nice flank on the T-34 if it charged through, we would have a narrow channel to put a round in the T-34 head on if it came from East, and we would both be in close proximity to assist each other.

Plan Blue seems dubious since the T-34 is almost certainly one of the causes of the smoke, and if it is, the drone will still see it leave to the West. However, in the off chance it is actually over there, that would turn revised plan Yellow into a disaster, with them getting a shot on our rear armor, and like Max says, we can just turn to face it if it comes from the South.

In hindsight, I think moving to the North East area to preempt this kind of move would have been wise, but it's a bit late at this point. After thinking this through, I think I'd rather be safe on the chance they maybe have two drones somehow or disembarked someone to throw a smoke grenade while they circled long to the West.

“I still think we should stick together,” you say. “If you want to get moving then say the word but…”

“Why throw away our advantage?” Miho finishes. “We’ll set up behind the hospital then. You take east, I’ll take west. Load Suped-up HE too.”

“Axel? You heard the lady,” you say as Max moves slightly northeast to make space for Anglerfish team. You have plenty of space to give, and you make sure to give enough that anyone coming up between the buildings would have to come the whole way down.

Anglerfish team quickly repositions themselves so they’re covering your rear and vice-versa. You consider suggesting a switch for a minute given anything coming from the west will be at a longer range, but quickly decide against it given Hana is just as competent as your gunner and the range isn’t long enough to make that much of a difference.

You watch for another minute as the smoke screens get further and further apart. Both are heading towards spots you or Anglerfish are already aiming for.

“Smoke screen heading towards us is slowing and getting smaller,” Max says, eyeing the tablet Leo surrendered to him before passing out.

“Is it now?” You hear Hana interject.

“Sure is, and the one on our side is getting closer!” Saori adds.

“Spray the smoke with tracer, Saori,” Miho orders as it approaches the corner.

You hear the chug of Saori’s machinegun and the shattering of glass as she hits the building behind the smoke. A burst later, you hear the clang of bullets on metal.

“There!” Miho declares. “Enemy T-34!”

You begin spinning your turret round and cock your machinegun to contribute to the fight, but it’s over before you’re halfway.

Anglerfish’s gun fires, and you hear an explosion. It’s followed a moment later by a T-34 skidding out of the smoke and into the riverbank.

“Is it over?” Ruby asks hopefully. You look over to Miho who nods back at you before slumping in her hatch.

“It’s over,” you confirm, copying your commander. “About time too.”

>Invite Miho to come with us to check on the T-34 team and shake their commander's hand

You take a moment to relax and slip out of combat mode. You’ve been alternating between fighting and staying vigilant for almost a day by now so you just enjoy the wind on your face for a moment.

“Hey Miho?”

“Yeah, Fritz?”

“Do you want to go see who was in charge of that T-34?”

“Five minutes?” She suggests.

“Five minutes then,” you agree. You take a moment to rummage around for a canteen which you first swig from then use the rest to clean your face as much as you can. You then climb off Werewolf and walk over to Anglerfish team where Miho is waiting.

“Here,” she says offering you a small box.

“Wet wipes?” You ask after inspecting them. “Saori?”

“Saori,” she confirms. You take the opportunity to clean up a bit more properly before the two of you walk towards the riverbank where you saw the T-34 go over.

The tank is thankfully not in the river. Instead, it’s stuck in the mud lining the river, and you can see three figures inspecting it from a short distance, discussing the situation in a mixture of a language you’re unfamiliar with and what you think is Russian.

“Are you the team from Tajikistan?” You ask in English. “You got pretty far, well done.”

“We are,” one girl, slightly shorter than you confirms. She’s wearing what looks like late soviet tanker surplus. A practical choice if nothing else. “I wasn’t aware we were that well-known.”

“Made the news to hear that an entire country chipped in to send a tank out here,” you reply.

>Ask them about how they made two smoke screens at once.

“I’m Miho, and he’s Fritz by the way,” Miho chips in.

“Madina,” the girl replies.

>Ask them about how they made two smoke screens at once.

“So, how did you make two smoke screens at the same time?” You ask. “It was a neat trick by the way.”

“Vasili,” she answers.

“What?”

“Who,” Miho corrects you. “Vasili is a name, right?”

“Watch,” Madina nods, pointing off to the right. It takes a few minutes but eventually a Goliath trucks into view with a boy that must be Vasili sat atop it. “We stuck half our smoke grenades on it and told him to drive. Unfortunately, it ran out of battery too early, no?”

“Just because it didn’t work doesn’t make it a bad idea,” Miho offers.

>Ask them how they made it so far in such an old tank.

“Yeah, all the way to second,” you add. “Any secret you want to share on how you did it in such an old tank?”

“To the people that came first?” She grins, an eyebrow raised. “Back home is very poor, you know? No big Panthers. Only old stuff. Russian stuff. Then you have to use those to fight the big expensive tanks the Russians have. Makes you learn to be smart. Or good at repairs.”

“Fight smart?” You repeat.

“Smart,” she confirms, her grin growing. “When you see big Bengal Tiger do you sit and trade? No! Hit the track and wait for the zone to eliminate them!”

“Erika?” You ask Miho.

“Sounds like it,” she giggles.

You stick about to chat with Madina and her crew a little longer. They’re obviously a little annoyed not to have won, but apparently they’ve more than paid for their trip with the winnings, they’re not too fussed.

Soon however, you’re visited by the transport to take you back to the initial staging area.

>Stay with your tank, you can wait with Werewolf till a recovery vehicle gets out here.

When the transporter comes, Madina and her crew make use of it to head back to get out of the field and back to the staging point. You decide instead to stay with Werewolf till a recovery crew can get out here. You could drive back yourself, but it’d be rather embarrassing for your engine to fail again, and why make extra work for your crew if you don’t have to?

“You don’t want to go back yet?” You ask Miho as the two of you trudge back towards your tanks.

“You’re not heading back,” she points out. “I’m tired. I want to hopefully skip any awards ceremony.”

“Is there one for this?” You ask.

“I don’t know, but I don’t want to go find out,” she replies. You soon reach your tanks where you split ways and remount your vehicles. Your crew are still where you left them, though all the hatches are open and some, including a still unconscious Leo, are splayed out on top of him, enjoying a few minutes without anything to worry about.

“And how are you feeling?” You gently thump Werewolf as you sit back in your hatch.

Amused. That’s the only word you can use to describe his reply. The engine malfunctions were apparently a novel experience for Werewolf, though you suppose that makes sense given he didn’t spend all that long in operational service before being hidden away.

“Glad someone found it funny,” you hear Max laugh. “I’d rather it not happen again.”

>Prod Max on if there is anything you can do about the engine.

“Speaking of, is there anything we can do about it?” You ask.

“What, stopping backfires like that from happening?” Max replies. You hear him hum as he considers it. “Well, honestly, I don’t really know beyond swapping the engine.”

“You think? Maybe Erika will want to swap,” you suggest.

“If her tank can fit it,” Max shrugs. “Or if she’s willing to accept the trade off like we did.”

“We could always buy another one,” Ruby pipes up. “I’m sure there are plenty of engines available, repo or otherwise.”

“I’d rather not,” Max frowns. “I think the trade-offs are worth it.”

“No bias whatsoever, right?” Ruby snipes.

“You of all people shouldn’t be complaining,” Max retorts. “The extra power we get from it helps us haul that fat metal cylinder you call a gun around at a decent fuel usage and speed. Unless you want Rabbit team overtaking us that is.”

“Easy,” you caution the two of them. There’s a bit of grumbling but Max soon returns to the topic.

“We should ask an expert,” he suggests. “The automotive club maybe? Or Black Forest. We got it from them, right?”

“We did,” you confirm. “Either way, there are no matches for us for a week, so we can have a think about it over that.”

“Aye, that sounds good to me,” Max nods, likely content he’s saved the engine for now.

The recovery vehicles soon arrive, and it’s light work to load up your own tank and Anglerfish team so you can get moving.

>Ask Anglerfish team what they’re doing over the holiday.

As you mount the recovery vehicle, your turn your attention to Anglerfish team. “What are you girls doing over the holiday?”

“Nothing much,” Miho replies.

“Don’t you listen to her!” Saori immediately interjects. “It’s her birthday tomorrow. There is a party in the evening. You’re all invited.”

“And no one said anything?” You ask.

“I didn’t know there was a party either,” Miho admits.

“Well now you do,” Hana giggles. “Surprise!”

“Aside from that we’ll just be around,” Saori continues. “I think Duck team has some tournament or something. We should ask about that!”

“Hopefully we’ll be catching up on some sleep too,” Mako grumbles from nearby.

“What do you think you’ll be doing?” Miho asks.

“Saori,” Max replies. That remark earns him a face full of mud courtesy of Saori shoving him out of the truck. One you think is rather deserved.

“Don’t stop,” you order the driver, earning you a sharp nod from Saori.

“Wait up!” Max huffs as he jogs behind the transporter. All nine of you decide to ignore him.

>Have a look around and see how the other schools did. (Anzio)

You soon reach the staging point where the other eighty or so tanks are parked and or strewn about.

“We’re going to be here till our transporter arrives to take us home,” Miho says. A picnic mat appears out of Anglerfish’s tank which Miho and her crew promptly collapse on.

“I was planning to have a look around, talk to some of our friends,” you say.

“We’ll call you when the truck’s here,” Miho promises. That’s good enough for you and you set off to find Anzio first to see how the match went for them.

It doesn’t take too long to find them. Anzio, as they do, apparently decided after a long, tiring match is the best time to sell food and from how far back the queue is stretching, you reckon it was a good decision.

You go around the queue and closer to the stall where you’re noticed by Pepperoni who’s manning the stall.

“The Duce is in the back!” Pepperoni says between stirring her pot. “Let yourself in!”

“Thanks!” You shout back as you head around the back where another tent has been set up. “Knock knock.”

“Who? Ah Hermann,” Anchovy waves you in as you poke your head in through the tent flap. She’s resting in a chair, still in her Sensha-Do uniform. “Congratulations on winning.”

“All in a day’s work,” you reply. “How did it go for you?”

“Top twenty,” she smiles. “Three different teams had to work together to take us down!”

“That’s definitely improvement,” you cheer with her.

>Ask about whether it was worth taking the CV.33 as an add on rather than another tank.

“Say, you know that CV you took with you? Was it worth taking as a scouting tool rather than another tank?”

“It sure was!” Anchovy grins. “Even if you disregard the fact that it started right next to us, it was invaluable for reconnaissance! Guess how many times it got knocked out?

“Twice?” You guess, assuming it’s not going to be one.

“Three times,” she laughs. “We could send it right at them to find out where they were then pick it up afterwards! We couldn’t have done that if we’d taken any other tank!”

“I suppose not,” you chuckle with her. “Did your tank take the weight okay?”

“She didn’t like it,” Anchovy sighs. “But she’s a tough old girl and soldiered through to the end. Or at least our end.”

“We have CVs too, you know,” you muse, stroking your chin.

“And then in two years’ time they’re going to ban having a recon tank,” Anchovy snickers. “Might as well use it while we can, right?”

>Ask about her holiday plans

“Right,” you nod. “Got any plans for the holiday?”

“Ignore all of the problems at Anzio, head home and see my family in Toyota,” she replies. “Nothing special.”

“I thought Toyota was a car company,” you frown.

“The city is named after the company,” Anchovy smiles. “Their biggest plants in Japan are there. They’re actually setting up a new tank manufacturing subdivision you know? I’m planning to have a look around if they’ll let me.”

“Sponsor hunting?”

“Something like that.”

>See if Black Forest is still around

You spend a little longer chatting with Anchovy about the holidays and the winter tournament on the other side of it before you take your leave. You’re handed a box of something which you try to refuse, but Carpaccio waves you off and Pepperoni has already gone back to cooking so you just roll with it and take it with you. It doesn’t hurt that since it’s Anzio, you know it’s going to be good food.

Black Forest is similarly easy to find given the size of their logistics train. All you have to do is find a truck moving about with their logo and follow it back.

>Look for Erika, she’ll know the most about Black Forest’s performance here.

You decide to go straight to the top and find Erika since she’s most likely to know about how Black Forest performed.

It’s not very hard to spot her. You just walk into the camp and take a look around. You see her instantly, standing atop a nearby Panther that’s been knocked out, with her best instructor Nishizumi impression on.

She spots you as you walk towards her and climbs down off the Panther.

“Fritz,” she grunts in your direction.

“Erika,” you return, following her gazes. She’s watching what looks like a bunch of first years labouring over a Tiger II. Not hers – Sturmi – if you recall correctly but another from Black Forest’s arsenal.

“How did it go?” You ask. She says nothing for a moment, focused on the first years.

“Acceptably,” she says eventually. “This was a test run for some of our first years. Their first chance to operate alone without someone senior breathing down their necks.”

“So, you weren’t out there?”

“No, I wasn’t,” Erika confirms. “I was watching their performance.”

“And how was it?”

“Acceptable,” she says. “Most of them only went down when they were confronted by a coordinated team – like the one you took down, and none of them were expected to win.”

“Sorry again about that drone by the way,” you offer, but Erika waves you off.

“You know how much money the school has, it’s not like any one is going to miss it,” she says. “I think we’ll be investing in aerial ones if we come out to an event like this again though.”

“We got a lot of use out of ours,” you nod. “Not as useful in the city though.”

“So, ninety-nine is less than one hundred,” she deadpans.

“More like eighty or ninety,” you grin, continuing the metaphor.

>Offer her some of whatever Anzio have given you.

“Would you like some of whatever this is?” You offer holding out the box.

“You bought something, and you don’t know what it is?” Erika asks, eyebrow raised.

“Anzio gave it to me,” you explain. “I didn’t buy a thing.”

“Well, if it’s Anzio…” Erika’s hesitation quickly evaporates in the face of Anzio’s cuisine. She opens the box and you see her eyes light up momentarily. “Meatballs!”

>Prod her on what she thinks of the Unlimited-class format in general.

She carefully picks one up out of the box and you do the same. You take a moment to enjoy it before you ask another question.

“You’ve been involved in two Unlimited class matches now, what do you think of them?”

“I like them,” she replies. “They’re a good training exercise to help inexperienced commanders learn how to think for themselves.”

“A training exercise?”

“The tournaments are the main show,” she explains. “The duelling leagues, these Unlimited classes, they’re just entertaining forms of training, but training is all they are.”

“Well, that’s an interesting view,” you reply. “Not one I’m sure I agree with.”

>Go talk to Koume before you head back.

You chat with Erika a little longer before heading off to find Koume. She’s similarly easy to find and is gently guiding some first years through replacing enough of a Panther’s tracks so it can be rolled onto a transporter.

“You busy?” You ask.

“Never too busy for you,” she replies, spinning around to greet you. You get a quick hug before she lets go and smiles at you. “You’ve been bullying my first years, it was very unfair to knock them out like that.”

>“It was plenty fair, they got the same treatment as a dozen others.”

>“It was plenty fair, they got the same treatment as a dozen others.”

“Don’t I know that,” Koume giggles. “You should’ve heard them when they came back in after spending hours out in the cold, spitting fire and curses.”

“This a first for them?”

“Yep,” she replies. “They were trying to prove to Erika that they’re worthy of having a permanent Panther command instead of being stuck in a Panzer III.”

“Did they do a good enough job?”

“I thought they did fine, but all Erika said is ‘that’ll be determined at a later date’.”

“Sounds like she did a great job assuaging their fear,” you reply shaking your head.

“Yeah, great,” Koume snickers. “They think they’re going to be demoted to the reserves.”

“What do you think of the Unlimited class matches?”

“I like having a team,” she replies. “I always appreciate having someone to watch my back.”

“This match allowed partners in,” you reply. “I had Miho watching mine the whole match.”

“Against fifty other teams,” she retorts. “No thanks. I’ll take having twenty-nine other tanks with me any day!”

“Well, we only need fifteen,” you grin. That earns you a slug in the shoulder, but there’s no heat behind it.

“You’ll see,” she promises. “After the break.”

“I’m sure I will,” you reply, rolling your eyes.

“Speaking of the break, what are you doing for that?” She asks. “Going home?”

“Nah, it’s only a week so there’s no point,” you reply. “I just hope my mother sees it that way.”

“Yeah, good luck with that.” She pats your arm sympathetically. “But at least if you’re in the country you should be able to hang out, right?”

>“Well, my schedule isn’t very full at the moment so I suppose so.”

“Great,” she chirps. “I’m holding you to that!”

“And woe betide me if I forget?”

“Damn straight,” she nods. “Is Erika sticking about?”

“Heading home,” you shake your head. “Speaking of, I should probably head back as well, don’t want to be left behind and all that.”

“You can bunk with us if you are,” Koume snickers. “Your hair is long enough to braid.”

“I’d rather not,” you state plainly. You hold out your fist which she bumps and head off.

You trace your steps back to Ooarai where things seem to be moving. A transporter has arrived and Max and Mako are slowly guiding the tanks onto it. The rest of both crews are watching and assisting where necessary.

“That for us?” You ask as you spot the small trophy Miho is carrying.

“Sure is,” she giggles, presenting the little thing. “Cute huh?”

“Very,” you nod.

“Speaking of cute, Erika’s girlfriend came over to say hello,” Hana says. “She was complaining about how boring this match was too.”

“It was probably her in the Cromwell then,” you muse. “I don’t envy her.”

Soon, the tanks are fully loaded and the ten of you can strap them down. You’re able to make short work of it before the lot of you head for home.

The trip isn’t a long one, but you take advantage of it to get some sleep anyway. Once you reach Ooarai, you promptly deposit Werewolf in the warehouse before heading back to your apartment to clean up.

>Miho has a birthday tomorrow and you don’t have a present. Head into town and do something about that.
>Your sister’s heading to the airport in the evening, see her off.

You lay on your bed for a moment and think about it as Otto attempts to take advantage of the new source of heat.

Miho’s birthday is tomorrow and while it would’ve been nice to have notice, sometimes all you can do is work with what you’ve got. In addition to that, Erika is heading to the airport to go home and it’s your duty as an older brother to see her off.

With the plan decided, you climb up off your bed, and put it into motion.

Otto complains as you do, and your muscles do the same, but you push through and get changed before reaching out to your sister.

She apparently has nothing better to do while waiting for her flight, so jumps at the chance to come shopping with you before heading on to the airport.

You head to the disembarkation point to meet your sister. She’s not hard to miss and waves at you furiously as you approach.

“Hey! Good job yesterd- er, today,” she decides as she approaches. She then slugs you in the arm.

“Hello to you to,” you grumble as you rub your arm. “No suitcase?”

“I have plenty of clothes at home,” she says. “You need a present for Nishizumi?”

“Sure do,” you nod. “I was thinking since we’re close to Ooarai, and your flight is from the city, we could just head in get something then you can go.”

“You got it bossman,” she replies putting sunglasses on. “Lead da way.”

You look at the sky, which is still threatening to spill rain, then back to your sister. You decide not to comment.

The schoolship is already in port, so it’s not a long journey from the ship into town, but you’re still able to chat to your sister.

I think in longer events like Ultimate we can just take Frederick, or let other teams compete. That engine can still be put to good effect to help us be in places our opponents won't anticipate, even if it's not helping us charge into them anymore. Also the fact that we have it in the first place might force some more astute opponents to play more cautiously.

>Ask if anyone is going with her to Germany.

“So, is anyone returning to Germany with you?” You ask as the two of you ride the bus into town.

“I think all of my crew is heading back,” she begins. “Ruby and Axel are coming as well I think?”

“Not surprising,” you hum. Those two were probably the most likely to want to go back. “They didn’t say anything though.”

“Did you have much chance for chat during the match though?” Erika asks.

“More than you’d expect,” you reply. “Though I think we were more concern with sleep than talking about anything unless it was super important.”

“See Fritz, if it was me in your position, I would just not be tired,” Erika declares.

“And why is that?”

“Because I’m built differently,” she explains. “I would just politely but firmly say no.”

“This is what happens when parents go soft,” you sigh. That earns you an elbow.

>Tell her about Rosehip’s visit to your group.

“You should cool it with those,” you warn her as the two of you get off the bus. “Otherwise I won’t tell you about Rosehip.”

“You can’t do that!” She gapes. “Tell me!”

“Promise never to hit me again.”

“For the rest of the day,” she counters.

“Six months.”

“One month.”

“Deal,” you hold out your hand which she takes and shakes.

“She came to our camp after the match, probably looking for you,” you explain. “Hana called her cute.”

“That damn lesbian! She already has a girlfriend!” Erika complains.

“Kettle, meet pot,” you quip. Unfortunately, Erika’s too busy ranting to herself to appreciate the irony.

“She’s not wrong though,” you point out.

“Yeah,” Erika sighs. “She ain’t.”

“You going to do something about that?”

“When I come back,” she says after a moment’s hesitation. “Aren’t we here for a present?”

>“No, this is an interrogation disguised as a shopping trip.”
>“I suppose we should get to shopping then.”
>“It can be a shopping trip and a sibling discussion can’t it?”

>“It can be a shopping trip and a sibling discussion can’t it?”

“Hmm,” Erika stops and squints at you, probably trying to give off the impression that she’s examining you for any signs of deception. You know she can’t though, so you just stare back at you.

“Well, I suppose you’re alright,” she says finally. “Let’s get on with the shopping then, shall we? I need to get her a present as well!”

“Lead the way, then skipper,” you say.

“Skipper, huh?” She muses as she continues walking again. “I like it! I’m gonna make my crew call me that!”

“Cute,” you say, rolling your eyes. “What do you think Miho would want?”

“Dunno, a Boko?” You offer. “She likes those doesn’t she?”

“Ergo she’ll already have all of them,” Erika replies, rolling your eyes. “She’ll just thank you politely and throw it out later! It has to be something practical! Like a grenade!”

“A grenade?” You glance over to where Erika’s looking and see that someone is selling reproduction hand grenades. At least you hope they’re reproductions.

Still, bad choice aside, Erika’s advice has merit.

>An Ushanka. It’s getting colder and she’s often out of her tank.

A Sensha-Do clothing outlet catches your attention. You usually don’t need any since you work in uniform, but certain accessories might be useful. A warming looking Ushanka in particular looks like a good idea.

You go for it, it’s not that expensive and your wallet isn’t very thin in the first place.

After your purchase, you head back out into the shopping centre where Erika has her ‘practical’ gift as well. With your work for the day done, you just relax in the food court together and watch as Erika slowly drains your wallet by ordering more and more junk food.

Eventually, you need to head for the airport. The shopping centre isn’t too far away from it, so it’s a short trip by bus to her terminal. When you arrive, you spot the rest of her crew as well as Max and Ruby arriving as well.

“Don’t forget to give my gift to Miho,” Erika orders.

“Of course not,” you reply. “Don’t forget

>“Don’t forget, the world – Rosehip – ahem! Isn’t always going to wait for you.”

She almost doesn’t catch it as you come in for a hug. When she does get it she dodges out of the way and holds up a fist menacingly.

“We agreed a month,” you remind her, arms still outstretched.

You can see that she’s still tempted, and the fist stays up for a full minute before before it slowly comes down on your chest.

“I hate you,” she groans as her head follows her hand. “Why couldn’t I have got Leo for a brother? He would do whatever I wanted!”

“Love you too,” you chuckle as she bangs her head against your chest. You hear something that if it wasn’t mumbled would probably be a reply. Eventually, she disentangles herself from your arms and taps your chest one last time.

“See you on the other side. Loser.”

“No such thing as a moment, huh?” You chuckle as she marches off to join her crew.

“Love you too,” you hear in a high-pitched mimic of your own voice.

“It wasn’t two weeks ago you were explaining how you had the best sibling on the team,” you reply, turning to face your gunner.

“The best. That’s different,” she retorts.

“Well, is there space for a dashingly handsome teammate slash commander in there?” You ask.

“Yeah, but one doesn’t exist,” she replies, getting a snicker from Axel. You hold out your arms and she fills them anyway. “Hold down the fort here for me, ok?”

“Sure thing,” you promise before letting go and turning to Axel. “You going to re-enact that?”

He moves as if to do so, and you see your life flash before your eyes for a moment but instead he offers his hand which you shake. “See you on the other side, big man.”

There’s a smile before he nods and lets go, turning towards the terminal. You watch them all head in, and once they’re gone, head back to Ooarai yourself.

Monday 23rd October (Day 189)

You have a bit of a lie in that morning. It’s both the day after a major match, and the first day of the holiday, meaning you have absolutely no reason to be out of bed as early as usual. You still wake up on instinct, but any desire to get out of bed is crushed beneath the oppressive weight that is Otto the cat. Eventually however, laying down gets boring and you force yourself out of bed if only to use the bathroom.

>Go say Happy Birthday to Miho early.

Once you’re done and ready for the day, you take a moment to consider what you’re going to do today. The flood of messages in the Sensha-Do groupchat promptly reminds you that it’s Miho’s birthday and you decide to do something about that. A quick message to Saori determines that her and Miho are in the cafeteria, so you get up and make your way there.

It’s not hard to find them given Anglerfish team has taken over a large table in the middle. There’s a small cake on the table, and the five of them are chattering away. You can also see members of the Sensha-Do club coming and going to say Happy Birthday as well.

“Looks like it’s my turn,” you say as you approach. “Happy Birthday, Miho.”

“Thank you, Fritz,” Miho smiles back as you sit down. “There’ve been so many people coming and going, it gets a little overwhelming.”

“So tank fighting in front of thousands is nothing but a couple of happy birthdays gets you huh?” You ask, eyebrow raised getting a chuckle from some of the other members of Anglerfish team.

“That’s our commander!” Yukari proclaims.

>Discuss the match and what it means for Ooarai.

“So, yesterday’s match huh? It was sure something, wasn’t it?” You begin.

“It was so tough that half your crew ran away!” Yukari chips in. You give her a flat look as the rest of Anglerfish team laughs.

You pick a chocolate chip off Miho’s cake and flick it at her. “To think my first friend would betray me like that.”

“Yukari’s treachery aside,” Miho says through snickers. “The match definitely was something.”

“Do you think it means anything. Aside from another feather in our cap?”

“The poor bird is probably naked by now,” Mako mutters in the background.

“Well, we earned the money to pay for the movie, didn’t we?” Miho asks. “With this our money worries should be over permanently, right?”

“As far as I know,” you nod. “Though I wouldn’t be surprised if something happens.”

“Nothing should happen,” Hana states firmly. You suddenly remember that right now she is the Student Council President and therefore probably the most powerful person in the room. “I’ve looked at all the finances myself and now we should be in the green for the foreseeable future.”

“Well it’s reassuring to hear that. Prez.” You add the title as an afterthought.

“Prez,” Hana repeats, nodding slowly. “I suppose I am the ‘Prez’ now aren’t I?”

“And I’ll just have to find something else to call the Prez,” you reply as you stand to leave. “See you around, Prez.”

All of them look horribly confused which means you’ve done your job perfectly.

>Go see how the ex-Student Council are doing.

Instead of heading for the Student Council office, you head to the warehouse where ex-Student Council has migrated to.

“Hey girls, Pr-” you stop yourself from greeting Anzu as the president.

“I guess you’ll have to find something else to call me huh?” She grins from her spot on the couch.

“Ah damn, Kawashima still isn’t out of the habit, and I’d hope you wouldn’t either,” she complains.

“That’s probably because Momo-chan’s been saying it for years,” Yuzu reminds her.

>Claim your well-earned hug from Yuzu.

And that, reminds you. You beeline over to Yuzu who knows exactly what you’re coming for and opens her arms. You collapse into them and take a moment to appreciate the squeeze.

“It feels like it’s been months since I’ve last seen you,” you say.

“It’s been less than two days,” she giggles. “Well done.”

“We’ll just sit here and watch,” Anzu drawls from nearby. “Don’t mind us.”

“You can join or wait till I’m done,” you snap back. You hear her shuffle as if she’s thinking of getting up and joining, but she doesn’t, so you stay there for a solid few minutes, just enjoying the presence of your girlfriend.

>Make 100% sure that you won’t have any more ‘fate of Ooarai tank battles’.

Eventually however, the position gets uncomfortable, so you roll off Yuzu and onto the couch next to her.

“So that’s it, right?” You ask.

“There’s still another term to go,” Momo replies.

“No, I mean no more ‘end of Ooarai tank battles’, right?”

The three share a look.

“Probably not,” Anzu answers.

You just look at her.

“Ok, definitely not,” she says, holding her hands up in surrender. “The budget looks good for the rest of the year, and I’m not in charge of it anymore.”

“Does it feel good, not to be responsible anymore?” You ask.

“Scary,” Anzu replies, shaking her head. “It’s like I’m giving someone else my baby.” She looks to Momo and Yuzu. “Our baby.”

>Ask about their plans for the holidays.

“So, holiday plans anyone?” You ask and look around the room. The three share another look before Momo elects to talk.

“No one has much of anything planned actually,” she says. “I think Duck team has their tournament thing on the Wednesday, so we were thinking of going to show some support but aside from that I don’t have anything pressing.”

“My holiday is all planned,” Anzu says.

“So, what do you plan to do?” You ask.

“Nothing strenuous,” she shrugs. “I’m not even going to lift a finger if I don’t have to.”

“Typical,” Yuzu sighs dramatically. “I’m probably going to spend Friday with my family, but aside from that I’ll be free.”

You don’t miss how she squeezes your hand as she says that.

“Good to know we have the time available if we want to do anything,” you state.

>Ask about any events in the next term.

“Speaking of availability, what are you going to need the club for after the holiday?” You continue. “At least there’ll be nothing life or death, right?”

Anzu just smirks at you.

“Very funny, Pre- Anzu,” Yuzu sighs before turning to you. “The winter cup’s being revived this year, so we’ll have that. It’s just for fun though.”

“Promise?”

“Promise,” Yuzu states.

“You know, at the very least, I have actually told you everytime something important was on the line,” Anzu says.

“And I’m glad you did,” you reply. “Whatever, we’re done with that now, and we can enjoy a future without a big, horrible thing looming over us.”

“Amen to that,” Yuzu says.

“University?” Momo offers. “That’s pretty big.”

“It’s not particularly horrible though,” Anzu points out.

>“We’re going to be together. Ergo, it’ll be fine.”

Both Anzu and Yuzu glance to Momo, smiling and she shrinks slightly, embarassed.

“Is there something I’m missing,” you ask, looking between them. “Momo is coming with us, right?”

“I am,” Momo confirms. “It was just closer than I would’ve liked.”

“Eh, it’s the results that matter,” you shrug. “Who’s even going to look at these grades once you have a degree?”

“It’s a good thing she was part of the Sensha-Do team, you know,” Anzu adds. “Universities eat that stuff up and she was involved with the admin which is great.” The ex-President leans forward and stage whispers. “No one ever wants to do that at a university.”

“Right,” you nod before checking your watch. “Speaking of Sensha-Do, our mighty commander’s birthday is today. Weren’t they planning to do the party here?”

“In the warehouse,” Yuzu corrects. “There’s lots of empty space that isn’t in use, so it’s being done out there.”

“Fitting, huh?” Anzu quips.

“Very,” you reply as you stand. “Shall we go help out?”

“Since we’re in the area,” Anzu sighs dramatically and stretches. She wastes almost a minute before declaring herself done and leading the four of you out of the room.

As expected, you spot Anglerfish team nearby setting up decorations in the unused part of the warehouse. You’re also not surprised to see that Max and Leo have been roped into helping. What you are surprised to see is Saori resolutely blocking any and all attempts by Miho to help.

You decide to walk over, and the second she spots you, Saori spins around to you.

“Fritz! Tell Miho that she’s not allowed to help since it’s her birthday!” Saori orders you.

“Miho, you can’t help since it’s your birthday,” you dutifully repeat.

“Well, I’m ordering you to tell Saori that I will be helping,” Miho replies.

“Uh, Miho will be helping,” you repeat again.

As expected, that solves nothing, and the two are deadlocked.

>Ignore the argument and ask Hana if there’s anything you can do

You look between them and quickly decide that you’re not going to get involved in it anymore. Instead, you walk past them to Hana who’s actually in charge of getting work done.

“What do you need me to do?”

“Come to help?” She asks with a smile. “You could do the runs between here and the kitchens, grab all the food we ordered. You can perhaps take one of the Carro Veloces so you can shuttle it all in one go.”

“Sure, that sounds fine to me,” you reply. You look back to Miho and Saori where Saori is clutching one of Miho’s legs trying to stop her from moving towards one of the tables being put out. “Who do you think is going to win?”

“Saori,” Hana answers without missing a beat. “Miho may be our commander, but she hates to argue. Saori on the other hand, could go at it all day, especially when it comes to something trivial like this.”

“I see,” you look back to them again for a moment. “I’m glad that you’re the President.”

“Oh, stop it, you,” Hana laughs, swatting your arm. “Go grab the food.”

“Aye aye, Prez,” you reply as you head over to the CVs. You wave at the automotive club as you walk past. They’re alternating between working on their tank and watching the proceedings between Miho and Saori.

You fire up the CV and get to work. It’s not very difficult since all you have to do is go to the cafeteria, load up food, take it back, and repeat. It takes a few trips, but you’re soon done, and they manage to finish setting up in the table as well.

“Well done,” Hana coos as she passes you a bottle of water. “Everyone will be arriving soon, why don’t you go wash up quickly?”

>“Who won?”

Hana smirks and steps out of the way before pointing into the warehouse. You follow her finger and spot Miho glumly sitting on a plastic chair with a party hat, several meters from the nearest decoration being put up.

“She looks rather sad for her birthday,” you reply, slightly worried.

“Don’t tell anyone, but it’s for show,” Hana whispers. “Miho didn’t fight anywhere near as hard as she could. I believe she just felt obligated to help.”

You watch a little longer, and your worry alleviates slightly when you see Leo say something, followed up quickly by Miho – a joke at Saori’s expense if the redness of her cheeks is any indication.

“See,” Hana says, gesturing to Miho laughing with everyone else. “Just for show.”

“Speaking of just for show,” you say as you spot the President dramatically huffing and puffing.

>“I hope you got Anzu to help.”

“Well, I suppose Ex-President Kadotani did,” Hana hums. “Though it was more in co-opting the automotive club into helping than any effort on her own part.”

“Typical,” you sigh. “I suppose that’s better than nothing.”

“I don’t know if the automotive club would agree with you,” Hana replies. “Go relax for a bit. Guest will begin arriving shortly.”

“Sure thing, Prez.”

“Prez,” Hana repeats. “I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to that.”

“Give it time,” you suggest as you walk into the hangar.

You wonder for a moment whether to give Anzu an earful about pressganging the automotive club but decide against it. Instead, you head for Saori, who is busy with the final touches.

“Congratulations on winning,” you say. “I don’t know if I’d be able to talk Miho down.”

“It was never in any doubt!” She declares. You see Yukari and Mako share a look behind her back.

“Regardless, do you know who’s coming?”

“We invited all the friends we made from other schools, but it was at pretty short notice,” Saori replies. “I think Miho invited Alice too.”

As if on cue, you hear someone knocking on the door. “Hey hey! It’s Kay! How are we all doing!?”

>“Should’ve known you’d be the first one to the party.”
>“Where’s the midget?”

“Hehe, what can I say?” Kay laughs. “We love to host parties, we love to go to them!”

>“Where’s the midget?”

“Well, Alisa is right here,” Kay states, moving out of the door and dragging the girl with her. Alisa squawks, at both the unintended insult and the rapid movement, with Naomi following closely behind. “But I don’t think that’s the midget you’re talking about is it?”

“To your right,” Naomi grunts.

You immediately turn and attempt to brace yourself for the expected attack. You hear the tap of feet running on the warehouse floor, followed by a shape jumping out from behind the closest tank.

You only catch a flash of blonde hair before it collides with you.

“Gotcha!” Layla declares. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have you. Thanks to Naomi’s warning, you’re able to spin on the spot and arrest her momentum, leaving Layla hanging off your arms.

“Not quite,” you reply as you reach up to ruffle her hair. She squawks and dives out the way, hitting the floor in a roll before standing a couple of metres away. “I already have Kay to be the annoying older sister! Speaking of, where’s yours?”

“Germany,” you reply, snickering when you watch her face drop.

“Will Rosehip be around?” She asks hopefully.

“Depends on if she bothers coming with Erika not being here.”

“Azusa?”

You point deeper into the warehouse where you last saw Rabbit team and watch her sprint off into it.

“Godspeed,” you chuckle.

By now, the party’s almost in full swing. You can see that people from St. Gloriana’s, Pravda, Saunders and Black Forest have arrived and are already mingling. Outside you can hear a CV.33 – probably Anzio’s as well as see some University selection uniforms.

>Go say hello to the University contingent.

You decide the first people you should talk to are the members of the university selection team. You weave your way through the rapidly filling warehouse and out to the front where they’re standing. It seems you’ve just missed the small one – Alice if you recall correctly. Instead, you’re greeted by her three lieutenants who you don’t think you’ve met for more than a minute.

“Oh look, it’s the cute one,” the brown haired one giggles.

“Azumi!” The one with glasses hisses. “He’s a kid! You can’t say things like that!”

“We talk about how cute Commander Shimada is all the time,” Azumi replies, brushing off the one with glasses’ concerns. “Besides, he’s joining a university next year, right?”

“Sure am,” you nod.

“And how do you know that Azumi?” The third one with black hair asks. “Isn’t he a bit younger than your usual prey?”

“I’m the one that handed him the invite to Shimofusadai,” Azumi whines. “You’re so mean, Megumi!”

“Hey! It’s your fault I’m assuming!” Megumi fires back. It devolves into a few minutes of rapid-fire Japanese that you’re struggling to keep up with before Azumi ends it by sticking her tongue out.

“Sorry about that,” Azumi huffs turning back to you. “These sticks in the mud are just jealous they weren’t able to poach you for their universities first.”

“I wouldn’t have gone with them anyway,” you reply honestly. “I never considered any other university in Japan.”

“You hear that?” Azumi says, looking at them smugly. “Your universities suck so much he never considered them.”

You decide not to mention that’s because it’s where your girlfriend and several of your friends are heading.

“Any who, we’re just here to drop Alice off,” Megumi says. “We’ll be back tomorrow to get her.”

“Tomorrow?”

“Yeah, they’re having a sleepover since it’s Alice’s birthday tomorrow,” Rumi explains. “They’re going to celebrate in the morning or something.”

>It’s not your party so probably best not to

You consider stopping them and offering to let them stay a little longer. You don’t think anyone would mind too much if they did. However, at the end of the day it isn’t your party and asking them to wait a moment while you go in to find someone to ask would be a bit awkward. So, you leave it.

>See who the latest arrivals are.

Instead, you turn your attention to whoever’s hiding behind a nearby wall.

“There’s no one else here, it’s safe to come out,” you say.

You’re not at all surprised to see the Jatkosota trio emerge from behind the wall. “Why are you hiding from the University girls?”

“After our last meeting, the wind blew some fruit our way,” Mika replies gesturing to the retreating figures of the university team. “And they are the farmers, trying to reclaim their produce.”

It takes you a second to parse through the metaphor.

“Oh yeah, you stole one of their tanks, didn’t you?” You ask. “One of their Pershings wasn’t it.”

“More like permanently borrowed,” Mikko chips in. “We know it’s not ours, we’re just borrowing it.”

“Rumi is an alumnus of our school,” Aki adds. “She probably knows exactly what happened and if she gets her hands on us…”

“Not going to be pretty. Right,” you finish. “Well, none of those are our tanks, so I suppose it’s none of our business. Shall we head to the party?”

Mika strums her ever present Kantele. “Let’s.”

You lead the lot of them to the warehouse.

“You know, we do still have one of your tanks,” Mikko states. “A T-26 or something?”

Your mind blanks for a moment before you remember the tank they’re talking about.

“Oh yeah! The difference is we gave that one to you.” You look pointedly as Mika, but she shrugs it off.

You’re barely inside the warehouse again before you’re jumped again. This time however, all that happens is your eyes get covered. “Guess who?”

>“Hello, Koume.”
>“Someone who’s been following me around since childhood?”
>“A good friend of my bestest friend in the whole wide world, Erika Itsumi?”

You know that if Koume is around, Erika is also around and possibly nearby.

>“A good friend of my bestest friend in the whole wide world, Erika Itsumi?”

“You’re lucky this fork is plastic,” you hear Erika growl from your left.

“Because that went so well for you last time,” you reply with a grin.

“You know that it’s the reaction they do it for,” Koume sighs and moves her hands out the way. “Besides, everyone knows the threat is empty.”

Erika growls again but can’t deny the accusation. “I’m going to get a drink.”

You watch her as she storms off. “A little mean of you.”

“She’s getting better, but she could stand not to threaten close friends,” Koume shrugs. “Besides, I do it for the reaction too.”

“You’re horrible,” you sigh as Koume bursts out laughing.

“I’m not horrible I’m Koume.”

“Bad puns as well?” You ask, looking at her. “That’s a new one.”

“I’ve been branching out. You can only annoy Erika so much.”

“How have you been enjoying the party?” You decide not to waste anymore braincells on bad jokes.

“Fun,” she replies immediately. “We see people from other schools often at matches or whatever, but so many friends in one place? That’s rare.”

“Is it that rare though?” You ponder allowed. “There have been lots of big things so far.”

“You know what I mean,” Koume sighs, lightly slugging you in the shoulder. “When are you free during the holiday? To hang out?”

“Aren’t we hanging out now?” You grin back. It dies an ugly death to the flat look Koume gives you. “Ok, someone’s serious.”

“Dead serious,” she replies.

>“Friday.” Yuzu’s busy Friday so you’ll probably be free.

>“Tomorrow?” She’s already in the area.

“Done,” Koume replies immediately. “It’ll be fun to hang out with an old… friend…again.”

“You alright?” You ask, noticing how she faltered at the end of her sentence. She says nothing for a moment, eyebrows furrowed. Suddenly, they’re focused on you.

“You called Erika your bestest friend,” she says it calmly but she’s still staring at you.

“I did…” you trail off.

“Not me.”

“Yes…?”

“I’m going to join Erika,” she declares turning around.

“Isn’t she angry at you?”

“Well, we’re both angry with you,” she snaps before storming off.

“See you tomorrow!” you call after her getting a half wave. That’s confirmation enough when it comes to Koume especially when she’s in a bad mood.

cepдцeeд. Killer of ladies? No?”

“Almost,” you reply, turning to Klara. “Lady Killer.”

“Enough for government work,” she replies. “How you are finding the party?”

“That’s my line,” you quip, getting a titter of laughter. “Fun, nice to see people I don’t usually get a chance to.”

“Very true!” She laughs. “Much better here than stuffy balls. Dressing up? Is much fun. Fancy ball? Not fun.”

“Oh yeah, you were at Henschel’s event, weren’t you?” You ask, getting a nod from her. “Well, I got a job out of it that paid for university so I’m not complaining.”

“More of a lining of silver than enjoying the event hmm?” Klara suggests. “I remember hearing your crewmate complain. She isn’t here?”

“Heading home,” you reply. “You decided not to go back for the holidays?”

>Ask her about herself.

“So, Klara since you’re here tell me about yourself. Russia has plenty of great schools where they do Sensha-Do, so why come here?”

Klara laughs at that. “It was a…happy accident.”

“Happy accident?” You ask, eyebrow raised. “You can’t just leave me on that.”

“It’s not as interesting a story as it seems,” she chuckles. “One day I drank too much and filled in a form I thought was a sleepover release form. No. It was Pravda enrolment forms, and the contract break fee was too much.”

“’Sleepover release form’?” You prod.

“Boarding school,” she replies, waving her arms around as she speaks. “Form for eating, form for sleeping, form for breathing. Too many forms.”

“And you managed to get drunk at this super strict boarding school and accidentally fill out and submit the entrace forms for Pravda?”

“дa,” Klara smiles. “That is the short and long of it.”

“Well, are you enjoying it at least?” You decide to steer clear of the implausibility of her story. If that’s the one she wants to give that’s fine by you.

“дa,” she says immediately. “Is more fun than I expected. Schoolships are much better than any Russian boarding school.”

“Even though it’s the same thing but on a boat?”

“Is a private city on the boat,” Klara counters. “A lot the same but the difference is a big one.”

You talk with Klara a little longer before she excuses herself to see to something.

>Head inside to get a drink and see who comes to you.

With nothing else to do, you decide to head to the refreshments table. Someone has made a punch and since no one is acting crazy – any crazier than usual you reckon it must be safe so scoop some into a cup to drink.

It’s then that you spot Rosehip nearby. She was at the Unlimited class match yesterday, but you missed her when you left to talk to Erika and Koume.

>See what she thought of the Unlimited class match.

“Rosehip!” You call to her as you weave your way towards her. Her head snaps up at her name, and her face lights up when she realises it was you who called her.

“Commander Her-”

“Fritz,” you cut her off. “You’ve stayed over at my apartment, and you’re close with my sister. I’d say you can call me Fritz.”

“Fritz,” she repeats. “How’s it going? I didn’t get a chance to talk to you after the Unlimited class! At the beginning it was fun, but at the end Miss Darjeeling was all like ‘Rosehip! Stay still and spot for me.’ And I was like ‘But Miss Darjeeling, speed is life!’ Then she said ‘Rosehip, that’s true for aircraft, please do as you’re asked.’ And look where it got us! Knocked out!”

“So not worth the new tank?” You ask having only got about half of Rosehip’s high-speed rant.

“Not worth the new tank,” she nods. “Give me my Crusader and the ability to move any day!”

>Find out if she has any plans for the holiday.

“Any plans for the holidays? Aside from ranting about incompetent leadership?”

“I never said that!” Rosehip gasps, whipping her head around to make sure no one heard you. “Everyone makes mistakes!”

“Of course, I’m just messing with you,” you reply getting a pout from her. “Your plans?”

“Eh? Not much…I’ll probably head home to help out,” she sighs, rubbing her arm. “Seven brothers you know? A couple are older but a lot needs to be done.”

“Well, you’re stronger than I am,” you reply, clapping her shoulder. “If I had to deal with seven sisters I would have shot myself.”

“Erika’s great,” Rosehip replies immediately.

>Go over to her and discuss the virtues, and or lack of them, of your sister.

“Funny you should mention Erika,” you reply, grinning like a shark. “You know that she’s basically what I would look like if I was a girl.”

“Isn’t that obvious?” Rosehip replies after a moment’s hesitation. “I resemble my brothers?”

“But you see Rosehip, I’m hot as hell,” you grin. “Ergo, so’s Erika.”

It finally dawns on her where you’re going with it and tries to break away, but your hand on her shoulder also functions as an effective clamp.

“Aside from looking like me, she’s also pretty tough you know? Boxes every day. Even if she’s got a bit of a temper.”

“She’s just passionate,” Rosehip responds without thinking. She realises what she’s said a moment later and slowly begins going the colour of her hair.

“Already defending her virtue in her absence,” you tease.

>“Nice chat, you think about what we’ve just discussed.”

“I uh yeah… I will,” Rosehip promises. You clap her shoulder again once and gently point her in the direction of where the rest of the St. Gloriana’s contingent is located. The party is beginning to wrap up anyway, so they’ll be able to take her back.

You spot Miho and make your way over. “How’s the party been?”

“Great and tiring,” she replies with a huff. “All the friends we make are the best parts of Sensha-Do.”

“Well, at least that means the party was a success, huh?” You say, nudging her. Miho’s about to say something before she’s interrupted by a constant thump-thump-thump.

“There’s a helicopter outside!” Someone cries out. You share a look with Miho and the two of you walk to the door. You have to jostle for position, and you end up next to Anzu who’s struggling to see over everyone else.

“Fritz, a little help?” She asks. You offer her your back which she jumps on to get a better look and the two of you watch it slowly descend.

“A chinook,” you observe. “We don’t own one of those, do we?”

“Not unless the aviation club has been very successful but hasn’t told us,” Anzu mumbles.

“The markings aren’t for any of the schools,” Yuzu adds, appearing next to you with Momo.

“So, who is it?” You ask.

That question’s answered a moment later when the ramp lowers and a figure appears.

“Maho!”
“Commander!”
Miho and Erika cry out in unison. Maho waits for the helicopter to be on the ground before jumping out and beelining to her sister. Maho’s entrance revives the party again for a short while, and you’re soon able to get to her after everyone else has finished greeting her.

>“Good to see you again, Maho.”

“And you Fritz,” she replies, delighted. Or at least as delighted as Maho can look. “It is a real pleasure to be back home again.”

>“Germany that bad you’re back after one term?”

“Yes, it’s horrible.”

The blunt delivery catches you off guard, but you notice Maho’s smile a moment later.

“Very funny,” you growl.

“I thought it was,” Maho says. “But no, it’s been fun not to be the best again. There are many high-quality tankers to compete against.”

“Ah, give it a couple months and you’ll be at the top of the food chain again,” you reply.

“That sounds like something Mother would say,” Maho muses.

“She’s not wrong,” you counter, getting a shrug from Maho. “How long are you staying for?”

“Just tonight for Miho’s birthday,” she explains. “I’m leaving tomorrow.”

“You’re heading all the way back?” A nod. “So you came for a single evening?”

“And most of tomorrow,” Maho adds.

“Why not stay for the holiday?” You ask. “Since you’re already here.”

“There is too much to be done in Germany,” she replies. “As you said, in a couple of months I should be the best again. That goal is best served in Germany.”

“I didn’t mean it like that,” you protest. Unfortunately, it falls on deaf ears and Maho seems to be committed to her course.

You talk to Maho a little longer before she excuses herself to go talk to her sister. The party is winding down anyway, so you take the opportunity to drop Miho’s presents off before heading home.

Tuesday 24th October (Day 190)

That morning, you wake up to a message from Koume reminding you that you’ll be meeting her today and you’ll be sorry if you forget. You decide not to reply for a little bit just to mess with her. She follows up the message informing you today you’ll be...

>…going to an airshow.

You nod as you read the message. It’s not something you would’ve expected, but it sounds interesting.

You give her enough time to stew before replying with a single thumbs up. You get a thumbs down for that.

You take a moment to pack some things to take with you – snacks, a picnic blanket, water, before heading out. You send a text to Yuzu letting her know where you’ll be and quickly pop in to say happy birthday to Alice before you leave. Maho is there with them but she’s not enough of a morning person to say much that’s intelligible.

You quickly stop by the warehouse to grab your bike before you leave since you’d rather not rely on public transport, especially if it’s far away.

You get onto land and make your way down to where Black Forest’s carrier is docked. The Nagoya docks are the largest in Japan, meaning several school carriers can be present. Unfortunately, they’re also the busiest, meaning it takes you a while to reach your destination.

“You’re late,” Koume grins at you as you arrive.

“I have to be fashionable,” you quip. She rolls her eyes and climbs onto the back.

“It’s a shame your sister isn’t here as well,” Koume says as she gives you the location. “Then it’d be just like old times.”

“You can take that up with her when she gets back from Germany,” you reply as you check the address. It’s not too far away so after handing Koume the other helmet, you push off.

Traffic is thankfully light. The holiday plus it being mid-morning on a Tuesday mean the roads are relatively empty. That means you’re able to put on the speed and reach the airfield with time to spare.

Koume has thankfully sorted out the logistics, so when you get to the ticket gate, you’re able to get through with ease and after putting your bike away, the two of you head onto the airfield.

“We have some time before the actual show begins,” Koume hums. “Finding a spot probably won’t be a problem so we could have a look around.”

>Rotary aircraft are underappreciated. Go have a gander.

“Shall we have a look at the helicopters?” You ask. “I’ve always thought those are pretty cool.”’

“Not the fast jets?” Koume asks. “I thought those would be more your style?”

“And why is that?” You ask, turning to face her.

“The fact that you’ve souped up your tank so you can blaze off into the sunset? I know about the engine Maho gave you.”

“Nowadays we prefer a more tactical approach,” you reply as the two of you walk. “Taking our time. Getting to a good position. The thinking person’s sport.”

“I didn’t know you did much of that,” Koume says. She said it so nonchalantly that you almost missed it, and when you turn to glare at her she just smiles back.

The walk to the aircraft is a short one. A glance at the areas the other two aircraft types are parked reveals that they’re far more crowded than the rotary area. The helicopters themselves are behind a barrier wall, surrounded by staff.

“Hueys!” You cheer, as you spot the iconic helicopter. “We have some of those!”

“Black Forest is looking into acquiring some utility helicopters too,” Koume nods. “Some JSDF ones are being retired this year and we’re thinking of grabbing some.”

“Ours are useful,” you hum distractedly. “I didn’t know that Japan had any Ospreys.”

“We have about twenty?” Koume replies. “I don’t think those are Japanese though.”

“Why not?”

“On the side there. M-A-R-I-N-E-S,” Koume spells in English.

“Whoops,” you chuckle as Koume bursts out laughing. The two of you get closer to the helicopters. You’re about a hair’s distance from the helicopter when you hear a voice.

I wouldn’t touch it if I was you, kid,” someone says in English. “Otherwise, I’d have to kill you.

Oh, sorry,” you reply. “I like my life.

You’re not Japanese,” the person replies. You look up, and you’re face to face with a man that looks triple your age. He squints at you, then looks at Koume, then looks back to you.

“Fritz?” Koume asks. She doesn’t speak English you realise, so all she knows is that you’ve just had a conversation with a rather hostile marine.

We can just g-” you stop talking when he holds out a finger at you. He keeps it there and pulls out his phone. You’re left standing there awkwardly while he taps away at it for a moment.

[You tank kids?” He finally asks. To which you nod an affirmative. “From that lil upstart school?”

I am. She’s from Black Forest.

“Gunnery Sergeant Hart,” he says with a nod, introducing himself in fluent Japanese. “You kiddies have made me a lot of money.”

“How?” Koume asks, finally able to contribute. “Why didn’t you speak Japanese before?”

“Betting and because I could,” he replies. “Well kiddos, this is Gone Fishing. Greatest helicopter in the Corps.”

>“Why is it called ‘Gone Fishing’?”

Koume beats you to that one. She looks like she’s just as confused as you are.

“Heh, that’s a funny one, kiddo,” Hart chuckles. “It was years back, during one of my first deployments to Japan with her. Shit it was one of her first deployments too. We had just dropped off a Force Recon rigid boat as part of a training exercise. Just as we’re about to pull up, a whole shoal of flying fish leaps out the water and into the back! She smelt like burnt fish for weeks.”

“That sounds like it sucked,” you say getting a solemn nod.

>“What makes her so great?”

“What makes her so great?” Hart scoffs. “Gone Fishing has done it all kid! Special forces insertion, combat drops, air-to-air refuelling. Hell, we carried a President once for five minutes. In fact, you see here?”

He points to a single tally mark next to the cockpit.

“We sank a North Korean submarine. Only combat kill on a sub since the 1970s.”

>“What are the Marines doing at a random airshow?”

“Well, the official story is that we’re here building relations and goodwill with the locals.” He chuckles. “Actual story is that we need some flight hours or our CO will be breathing down my ass.”

>“What are you doing in Japan?”

“Me? We’ll I’ve been a PACOM marine my entire career, so I’ve been based here most of my career. Spend enough time in a foreign place, and I guess you pick things up.”

“Like Japanese,” Koume states.

“Like Japanese,” he nods. “What about you two?”

You give him the abbreviated story – grew up in Germany, came to Japan on a scholarship, and saving for university. Koume’s is pretty similar with the notable exception of growing up in Germany.

“Yeah, that’s good, go to university,” he grunts. “I love everything I’ve done, but not continuing my education is one big regret.” He looks lost in thought for a moment before he shakes himself out of it. “Anyway, we’re taking off about midway through the event. You’re welcome to come back then.”

“Of course, thank you for talking to us,” Koume replies with a smile.

“It’s nothing, kid. See you in a few,” Gunnery Sergeant Hart says, waving you off. “Go enjoy the show. I’ll see you later.”

>Find the perfect spot to sit and watch the beginning of the show.

That’s exactly what you intend to do. The two of you take your stuff and begin to make your way back to the main field for the best view of the show.

Contrary to the amount of traffic you saw on the way in, there are a lot of people present, more than enough to fill the field to the point you must compete for a good spot to watch all the aircraft.

Thankfully, there’s only two of you, so you’re able to find a spot to squeeze in and put down the picnic blanket.

“What do you think they’re going to send out first?” Koume asks as she makes herself comfortable.

“The heavy aircraft I reckon,” you say after a moment to think. “We were told that the rotary aircraft were going in the middle, and they’ll save the best for last right? Meaning the fast jets will go last.”

“Or, they’ll go together, and Gone is scheduled for some where in the middle.”

“What makes you say that?” You ask. Koume points into the distance where you can see one of the transport aircraft lining up. Slightly behind it you can see several jets also lining up. In front of them, however, is a single Blackhawk taking off.

“Interesting,” you murmur as you observe the procession. Of the large aircraft you can see what looks like a C-17 flanked by a pair of Navy Hornets. Even further back are a several F-15s though you can’t tell whether they’re Japanese or American.

>“What’s your favourite aircraft?”

>“Are there any classic aircraft coming up?”

“There’d better be,” Koume huffs. “What’s the point of an airshow if it doesn’t have any classic aircraft?”

That takes you by surprise, and you turn to look at her. “I didn’t realise you had such strong opinions on airshow composition.”

“It’s for good reason,” Koume retorts. “Go to any military base and you can see all these new planes, but the old ones barely ever fly. Any airshow worth its salt should have some.”

“Well, from what little I know, this is meant to be a show worth its salt, right?”

“Yep.”

“So there should be some old planes?”

“I’m hoping for a Zero,” Koume replies. “I heard rumours of European planes being brought in but whether they’ll be shown today, who knows?”

>“Any clue what that Blackhawk is for?”

“Hmm,” Koume ponders the question, stroking a non-existent beard. “Either for photos or to help coordinate the whole thing.”

“That makes sense. I can’t imagine its easy directing an event like this,” you nod. “Pictures are good for publicity as well.”

Further conversation is cut off as the jets close in. The C-17 rolls past and the two of you cover your ears as it lumbers down the runway. It seems to barely get off the ground before the end of the concrete, gently climbing into the sky.

The fighters have no such issue. The five of them streak down the runway, going almost perpendicular as they take off. You attempt to keep track of all of them, and fail miserably as they streak up into the clouds.

“You know, you’d think you’d be able to see the aircraft at an airshow,” you quip to Koume.

“Just wait,” she laughs.

Her point is proven a moment later when all five of them streak back out of the clouds, towards the lumbering C-17. You can’t help but feel sorry for the pilot as he gets buzzed five times – once by each of the jets.

There are other tricks too – close formation flying with all of the aircraft in the air involved, a mock dogfight between an F/A-18 and an F-15 – at least that’s what Koume tells you. As far as you can tell it might as well be an aerial game of chicken but it’s an entertaining watch. They continue the routine a bit longer, with a pair of F-16s joining them. Eventually they come down and you have a short intermission before the next display.

>Gunny Hart told you to come back part way through, go do that.

“Hey Koume,” you begin, prodding her. “Should we go see Gunnery Sergeant Hart?”

“Why? Oh! Yeah, he said to come back, didn’t he?” Koume realises. “Lets get going then!”

The two of you quickly repack all your stuff and make your way back to the rotary area. When you get there, it’s far busier than it was before the show. Helicopters are being marshalled and moved around, ready for the show.

Gone Fishing is no exception and as you approach you watch the engines being rotated up then back down. Gunny Hart notices you as you approach and waves you over.

“Good to see you again, kiddos!” Hart shouts over the background noise. “Gone Fishing is going to be the lead helo for the next part of the demonstration, so we’re warming her up! We can’t take you all the way up with us, but we’re going around the field a couple of times to make sure she’s in perfect condition and could use the extra weight!”

“Is that an offer!?” Koume shouts back.

“Damn right it is!” He replies, marching towards Fishing’s rear ramp. You share a look with Koume before both of you scramble to follow him. You’re let into the area by a surly looking MP and you drop your stuff in Gone Fishing’s crew area.

The inside of the Osprey is rather claustrophobic, and that’s not helped by all the boxes stacked outside.

“Help me load this stuff,” Gunny Hart orders. It’s not too difficult. A life of moving shells and spare tracks around makes the boxes an easy lift, especially with Koume’s help. You’re soon done and Gunny Hart secures the boxes before handing the two of you pairs of over-ear headphones.

“So, we don’t have to shout,” his voice crackles through the headphones. “Strap in, kiddos. Take the seats closest to the ramp.”

>“What’s in the boxes?”

>“Don’t you usually have a crew for this?”

“Usually I do,” Hart grumbles back. “Unfortunately, all the sons of bitches are either on leave or off chasing skirt. Dumbasses don’t even speak the language and they think they stand a chance.”

“You don’t seem to rate their chances very highly,” Koume observes.

“I’ve been based in Japan for over a decade, on and off. I’ve seen it all before,” he explains. “Had to sign for far too many who end up getting arrested.”

>“What’s in the boxes?”

“Camera equipment,” he replies. “We’re going to pick up some Navy photographers when we drop you off. We load up all their crap now, so they can sort it out while they’re in the air and don’t waste any time.”

You nod at the answer and lean back against the wall. The Osprey is moving fast, banking slightly left as it circles the display field. The ramp is still open, and out of it you alternatively see the sky or the ground with all the spectators watching. You glance over at Koume and from the look on her face, you can tell she’s having a blast.

“What’s that?” Koume asks, pointing off into the distance. You can’t see what she’s talking about, but Hart walks over to her and squints in the same direction.

“About time they got here,” he replies after a moment’s examination. You don’t get a chance to ask what he means as the speck rapidly turns into a pair of fighter planes.

One is a Super Hornet – the same kind you saw take off not to long ago. The other however is a prop plane. You can’t quite place it, but Koume can.

“A Corsair!” She gasps. “And they’re heading towards us!”

“Looks like you’re in luck,” Hart grunts. “Fighter jockeys love to harass us helo drivers so you’ll be able to get a closer look.”

His words are prophetic, and seconds after he says it, the two planes reach Gone Fishing. They’re close enough that you can see the pilots – one even waves back to Koume.

“Take a picture!” Koume orders, throwing her phone at Hart. He lets out a string of curses as he fumbles with it. He manages to get the picture though, and you have another couple of seconds view of the two warbirds before they peel away and head down.

The ride lasts a little longer as the pilot finds comes into land. It wasn’t much in the grand scheme of things – maybe ten minutes long but it felt like a lot longer.

“Here,” you hand Hart the headphones back but he refuses.

“They’re old. Going to be destroyed in a couple of weeks. Keep ‘em as a souvenir and I’ll write it off as a loss during flight.”

You land and reclaim your stuff before Gone Fishing takes off again.

>Find somewhere to get a bite to eat and listen to Koume go on about it.

“You hungry?” You ask Koume as you start to feel the energy you’ve expended today. She doesn’t reply though, too busy watching Gone Fishing as it disappears into the sky. “I’m just going to assume you are.” You declare. You hook an arm through hers and begin yanking her in the direction of the main field.

You soon find somewhere to eat. There’s not much to it – it’s just a food truck with some stools nearby you can sit on. It’s enough for now however, and after obtaining some questionable looking hot dogs, the two of you are able to sit down and you’re able to listen to Koume gush.

“It was great! I can’t believe that we got a chance to go up in one of the aircraft! Even if it was an Osprey!”

“You have a problem with Ospreys?” You ask between bites.

“No! Of course not!” She gasps. “It’s just that there are far better helicopters out there, you know?”

“What would Gunny Hart say?” You tease. Koume’s eyes widen, and she tries to protest. Unfortunately, the combination of trying to eat and talk at the same time causes some of the hot dog to go down the wrong hole and you end up having to pat her back as she coughs half of it out.

While Koume recovers, you retrieve her phone and send a copy of the picture Gunny Hart took to yourself.

>Send pictures to your sister so she knows exactly what she’s missing.

You then forward it to Erika along with a couple of other pictures and videos of the things you’ve seen so far.

She promptly responds with a middle finger emoji, meaning you’ve done your job perfectly.

“Bleh, hot dog wasn’t very good anyway,” Koume grumbles as she swigs a bottle of water. “Let’s head back to the field. Is there anything that you want to see in particular?”

>All of them.

“Well, to be honest, all of them are really cool,” you reply. “I want to see all of them – the classic planes, the transports, the fighter jets – every single one.”

“Planes are very cool,” Koume nods sagely. “I want to see a Zero though.”

“You already mentioned,” you reply. The two of you stand and you throw down some cash to pay for the food you’ve eaten. Then, the two of you begin to make your way back to the main field. You’ve missed a little bit of the show while waiting, but you can still see Gone Fishing up in the air, well ahead of a mixed flight of planes.

“The Corsair and Super Hornet we saw earlier are still up,” Koume says, watching them. “I think I see a Thunderbolt and a Harrier as well.”

“That seems about right, nice spotting,” you reply, as if you know as much as Koume does. She isn’t fooled and you see her rolling her eyes.

“Thanks for confirming, professor,” she giggles. “Let’s find somewhere to sit.”

You’re able to find a good spot quickly – close to your original position. You sit down and make yourself comfortable to watch the planes overhead.

“They’ve brought out so many WW2 planes already,” Koume begins.

“They sure have,” you nod along.

“But not a Zero yet.”

“I’ve seen zero.”

“Where!?” Koume demands, frantically looking around. She realises a moment later you’re teasing her and hits you with an evil look before sighing and dropping it. “Do you think they don’t have any?”

“They are bringing them out in waves,” you point out.

“But surely they’d have brought it out by now!”

“Maybe they’re saving the best for last?” You offer.

“What’s that noise?” You wonder aloud as you hear something. “It sounds a lot…stringier than the American planes we’ve heard so far.”

“That is a Zero!” Koume huffs. “You show some respect!”

You hold your hands up in surrender as she glares at you for a split second before turning her attention back to the plane. “Man, I wish we were still up there.”

>“Any reason that you like it so much?”

“It’s a national symbol,” Koume murmurs distractedly. “There’s only two flying in the whole world, and only one in Japan! The country that made them!”

“Well, that makes it something special to see,” you admit as you watch it trace lazy circles in the sky. “It doesn’t explain why you’re such a big fan of it though.”

“Well, I’m pretty sure that my great-grandfather flew them during the war, so that’s one reason,” Koume explains. “Aside from that, they’re just cool, you know? Reading about how great they were… at least in the early part of the war.”

“Obselete huh? I guess that’s how it is with all technology,” you muse.

“Thinking of tanks at an airshow?” Koume teases, never taking her eyes off the planes.

“Me? I would never!” You retort dramatically. That gets a laugh out of her and you soon settle into a comfortable silence as you watch the planes zip about above you.

Eventually, it begins to get dark. There’s no point of being at an air show if you can’t see the planes and people begin to leave. You and Koume follow their lead, packing everything back up and heading back into port on your bike. It’s slower going thanks to it being dark and the traffic leaving the air show, but you soon make it back.

“That was fun,” Koume says as she climbs off the back of your bike. “Thank you for coming with me.”

“Any time for you,” you reply. “I don’t think I’ll be forgetting today anytime soon.”

“A one-of-a-kind day,” Koume smiles back. She leans down to hug you, which you return with one arm before turning away and walking back to her ship. You wait till she makes it onto the ship and is checked in by a member of their student council before turning around and heading back to Ooarai.

>Grab breakfast with (The ex-Council) and find out what they’re going to be doing today.
>Text the ducks

Once again, you wake up later than you usually do, and once again that’s no real problem since it’s the holiday and you have almost nothing important to attend to. Almost being the key word. You grab your phone and send a message to Yuzu, asking if her and the council are free to have breakfast.

You get a quick reply. Yuzu suggests a spot on the schoolship in about half an hour. That’s plenty of time for you to shower, change, get ready, feed Otto, and make your way over. As you walk, you text the Ducks about their tournament and they quickly send back the details – lots of schools, several matches each, all day today.

You spot the ex-council easily, sitting at a table just outside of small café you never noticed before. They have a spread of pastries in front of them as well as a pot of something.

“Hello all,” you greet them as you sit next to Yuzu. You accept a kiss from her before you get to work stealing and eating all the pastries on the table.

“Hello to you too,” Yuzu replies. “Did you have fun yesterday?”

“I did,” you reply, handing her your phone. “You can see for yourself.”

Yuzu takes it and begins scrolling through the photos as the other two crowd around it to look as well.

“You went up inside a helicopter? How’d you manage that?” Momo asks.

“Good luck honestly,” you reply. “Right place, right time, right person.”

Momo and Anzu start to snicker, and you see Yuzu going red, so you snatch your phone back.

“Fritz…” Yuzu whines to the snickers of the other two.

“Sorry,” you shrug, kissing her on the cheek. “What are you guys planning on doing today?”

“Well, the only big event is the Ducks’ tournament, so we were considering showing up to support them,” Anzu says.

“On the other hand, they’re in Tokyo, so we could take the opportunity to go shopping first then catch the finals. It’s not often we get an excuse to go into the capital.”

“Or we could visit a nearby shrine festival,” Yuzu says. “It’ll be a bit like the festivals we’ve already had. Except with more fire.”

>Go do shopping, then support the Ducks.

“Do we know that they’re going to make it to the finals?” You ask.

“Definitely,” Anzu replies immediately. “I don’t think that any other team at their level can hold a candle to them.”

“Right, because it would be awkward to turn up to cheer them on after they’ve been knocked out.”

“As far as I can tell they’ve already made it through,” Momo chips in. You see her scrolling through something on her phone. “They only need to win a single extra match before the finals and its against a team that are effectively nobodies.”

“That makes me feel a bit more secure in that then,” you nod. “Whenever the three of you are ready?”

They share a look before Anzu nods and stands. “Let’s get this show on the road!”

“You got it, boss,” you say as you stand up. You take a moment to stretch before helping Yuzu up. “Let’s head out.”

So, you do. The ship isn’t exactly docked in Tokyo, but it’s close enough to it, and there’s a high enough concentration of schoolships docked to make a shuttle bus service there and back a viable option.

Traffic is thankfully light, so you’re able to make it in good time. The council almost burst out the bus doors as soon as they open and you have to speed walk to keep up.

“Tokyo Midtown,” Anzu sighs. “It’s been too long.”

“You’ve been here before?” You ask.

“All of us did, a few years ago,” Yuzu says. “It has everything.”

“Everything?”

“Everything,” Momo confirms. “Or close enough to it. Anything you’re looking forward too?”

>“Not carrying a lot of shopping?”

You can almost here the crickets chirping as you say that.

“Hmm, that’s quite something to be looking forward too,” Yuzu says. “Almost unrealistic, I would say. What do you think girls?”

“Unrealistic bordering on impossible,” Anzu replies, nodding sagely. “I think you should aim lower next time.”

“Well, shoot for the moon so if you fall, you’ll land in the stars, right?” Momo adds.

“Ha. Ha,” you say, making sure all three of them know exactly how unfunny they’re being. “At least I’ll be able to watch Yuzu try on new clothes.”

“Fritz…” She whines as she goes red. Anzu is howling with laughter, and you can see Momo hiding a smile as well. “You shouldn’t say things like that in public!”

“Well, I have to search for the silver lining in all this, right?” You offer. That gets a huff out of Yuzu and a thump in the shoulder, but you don’t miss how that hand slides down your arm and grabs your hand. You’re happy to hold it for her.

The four of you make your way into the shopping centre. You’re content to let the girls decide where they want to go and just follow them around, especially since there’s nothing you really need to buy anyway.

Unfortunately for your arms, it seems like clothes shopping is the first thing they want to do. You’re dragged into a department store and ordered to stay at the ready while they go and do their ‘important business’. You’re not particularly sure how important it really is, or how much you want to stay put in a spot with bad mobile data.

>Stay put.

You were told to stay put so with no better options, that’s what you decided to do. You spot an unoccupied bench and take a seat. You last all of a few minutes before you dig your phone out and start to scroll through it. You’ve been on similar trips with your sister and despite not being the girliest girl she often takes a while. You dread to think how long it’ll take Yuzu, Momo and Anzu to all be done.

“Commander Hermann!? What are you doing here!?”

You look up at the voice, and you see Aya gaping down at you.

“Waiting,” you reply. “You?”

“We’re here to support Duck team, but Yuuki wanted to shop first so we came out here,” Aya explains.

“The Council had the same Idea,” you chuckle. “Well, ex-Council. What are the chances huh?”

“Well, it seems like a pretty slim one, but since we’re both in the city for the same thing, it makes sense we’d both head towards a shopping centre close by,” she muses.

“And after that there’s only so many shopping centres and so many shops, right?” You finish.

“Yeah!” Aya cheers before sitting down and sliding up next to you. “So, is there anything you’re hopping the VP, er. Ex-VP will buy. I could show up and give her some ‘fashion advice’ if you know what I mean.”

You’re about to answer, when Yuuki bursts through a nearby clothes rack. “Aya, what are you- ohmygod! Commander Hermann! Hi! What are you doing here?”

“I’m waiting for the ex-Council to finish gathering clothes,” you reply.

“Oh em gee! How cute! I need a boyfriend as whipped as you.”

>“I am not whipped, I’m here out of my own free will.”

“Of course,” she nods dramatically. “You definitely are commander. They don’t have you wrapped around their fingers at all.”

“And what would you know about any of that given you’ve never had a boyfriend? Or been in a relationship?”

“I learnt from Saori-Senpai,” Yuuki replies. “She’s an expert on these things, you know? She has two boyfriends which means she’s double as qualified as you!”

“But she hasn’t had any girlfriends, has she?” You counter. “That means I would know more about those and whether someone is whipped or not.”

“Your crew would probably agree with me,” Yuuki fires back.

“But they’ve only had half a girlfriend each,” you return easily. “So, I know more than them.”

Yuuki opens her mouth to respond, but nothing comes out as she realises you’ve beaten her with her own logic. While she processes that, you turn to Aya.

>Do respond and suggest something. (Casual dress with heels)

“By the way, Aya. I’m a sucker for a dress with heels.”

“Wha…?” She starts to go red for a moment before something clicks in her head. “Oh! Right! The VP! No worries, Commander. I’m on it!”

She drags Yuuki off with her and the two disappear in the general direction Yuzu went in, leaving you alone again.

Thankfully, you’re not alone for long.

“There you are,” Yuzu smiles at you as she walks over. “Come on, we need your help.”

“With?”

“Opinions!” She cheers. “We ran into some of the Rabbits, and they gave me some advice.”

“They did, did they?” You spot Aya and give her a thumbs up from across the shop. “That’s nice.”

You’re led to the centre of the shop, close to the tills where her, Anzu and Momo have strewn a bunch of clothes and are pouring over them with a critical eye. You watch for a moment as they discuss the pros and cons of a particular blouse before it’s ruthlessly cast to the side.

“You’re not going to try them on?” You ask.

“It’d be easier to do at home,” Anzu replies. “Then we can send them back for free!”

>“I think it’s imperative, vital even, that you try them on now. We even have Aya and Yuuki here to help!”
>“I suppose that’s the more comfortable thing to do, even if it’d take more effort.”

>“I think it’d be less hassle if you try them on now so you don’t have to go through the trouble of sending them back.”

“Well, he has a point about that,” Momo nods. “Shipping times can lead to problems with refunds.”

“I suppose we try them on now then,” Anzu shrugs. She points to a nearby bench, facing the changing rooms. “Sit.”

“Sure thing, boss,” you grin as you take a seat. The three of them trail into the changing room with their chosen clothes bundled between their arms. There’s a brief argument with an attendant about the appropriateness of you sitting so close to the changing rooms, but all three of them argue her into submission. You just shrug at the girl and mouth ‘What can you do?’

It doesn’t take them long to begin the parade. You get to see everything they’ve picked out, from new T-shirts and jeans, to winter jackets, to Yuzu showing you a sweater and skirt that you swear she already has but she assures you are entirely different.

You decide not to question the woman on her knowledge of her own clothes and just stick to encouraging nods and comments when you see an outfit you particularly like. There are a lot of clothes, but the girls are clearly experts and methodically work their way through all of them. They finish relatively quickly, pay, and you’re soon on your way out of the store.

“That was fun,” Anzu cheers, from in front of you. “Sorry to disappoint you, Fritz.”

“It happens,” you sigh as you heft the bags.

“Is there anything you want to do before we head to the stadium?” Momo asks. “We have monopolised the morning after all.”

>“I don’t mind, it’s not like I have anything better to do.”

>“Where did Yuuki and Aya go? We can meet up with Rabbit team and go with them.”

“They were around just a moment ago,” Anzu hums. “Kawashima! Why don’t you give them a call!?”

“Yes Pres- Anzu,” Momo corrects herself. You see Anzu snicker at Momo’s slip up and have no doubt she caused it on purpose.

“Typical,” you mutter to which Anzu just offers you a grin.

A moment later, Momo is on the phone to Azusa, figuring out where they are and arranging to meet before the lot of you leave for the stadium.

“They said they’ll meet us in the food court,” Momo informs the three of you.

“So that’s where we’ll head,” Anzu decides. You follow her lead to the food court where you see exactly zero Rabbits.

“Think fast!” You hear someone cry. You try to turn to face them, but you aren’t fast enough, and they’re six strong, leaving you to fall against a table for support.

“Why is it always me?” You groan as you get up and shake the freshmen off you.

“Because it’s fun!” Karina cheers. “You’re an easy target too!”

“I’ll take that as a complement,” you sigh. “Are we ready to head to the stadium?”

“What are we going to do with all the shopping though?” Yuuki muses. “Otherwise, we’re going to have to take it with us on the bus all the way there, then bring it all the way back.”

You take a moment to survey the assembled group and every single one of them has something with them.

“What if we got Commander Hermann to carry it all?” Ayumi suggests.

“Absolutely not,” Azusa interrupts. “You bought it, you carry it. End of story.”

>See if you can get it sent back to the schoolship cheaply.

“How about we look for a way to send it all back to the schoolship? So we don’t have to carry it around with us?”

“It’d cost a lot of money and take a lot of time to send it by post,” Yuzu says.

“Usually,” you shrug. “But we have time. Why not look for a way to send them back to save you all from sore muscles.”

“It’s worth a shot,” Anzu shrugs. “It’s your idea so lead the way.”

All eight of them turn to you as Anzu says that.

“Okay,” you mutter to yourself. “How do we get all this stuff back to Ooarai…”

“Shuttlebus goes straight to the docks,” Azusa offers. “Maybe we can find something close to the terminal?”

“Well, no one has any better ideas,” you say. “To the shuttlebus!”

“I hope we’re not going to be walking for nothing,” Momo warns you. You just laugh.

You lead the way to the terminal, and you’re relieved to see an office for the company that runs it.

You walk over to the woman at the desk and put on your best smile.

“Hello, how are you doing today?” You ask.

“Alright, thank you. Do you need assistance with anything?”

“We have a lot of shopping we need to drop off at our schoolship, and we’re trying to figure out how to get it back. Since the shuttles go straight to the dock we were wondering if you had anyway to get them back there?”

“We’ve run into this problem before,” she laughs. “Of course we can help.”

She begins to talk about money, and that’s where Yuzu swoops in to make sure it’s a good deal.

Azusa shuffles up next to you.

“Thanks for the suggestion,” you say to her.

“Anytime, Commander,” she winks.

The girls sort out their shopping and getting it shipped. It’s all going to arrive in the mail room, and you feel a little sorry for the girl that runs the mail room, but she never liked you anyway so whatever.

With that sorted, the lot of you head for the stadium.

>Find the best spot to cheer on the ducks.

“What do we do now?” Aya asks. The rabbits all turn to Azusa, who turns to, and Momo and Yuzu turns to the President who is eating sweet potatoes, then turn to you.

“Right,” you sigh realising you’re apparently in charge. “Let’s find a good place to watch the match so we can cheer Duck team on.”

“Maybe we can find Duck team and we can use their seats to watch from the courtside?” Yuuki hums.

“We probably want to leave Duck team’s seats for them,” you reply. “Maybe the dedicated seating area might be a better place to look?”

“Oh. Er, maybe…” Yuuki goes red with embarrassment. “That sounds like a better solution.”

“Let’s go then,” you state, leading the way. You file through the crowd towards the stands. You spot uniforms and school names that you recognise, but unfortunately you don’t recognise any of the people wearing them. Some recognise you though, and you return their nods and hellos.

Seats aren’t hard to find but finding nine seats together is.

“Hey! Over here!” You look up and see Saori waving at you, with Yukari and Mako. They don’t have nine seats either but if you spread out across three or four rows it should be fine.

“Hello,” you greet the three of them as you take a seat behind them. “Here to support the volleyball team?”

“We sure are!” Saori cheers.

“I wonder how they’re going to do though,” Azusa pipes up from behind you. “Since there are only four members of the volleyball club.”

“How many members does a team usually have?” Yuzu asks from next to you.

“I see Miss Nishizumi over there!” Yukari crows, interrupting Saori’s explaination.

You follow her finger and spot the Duck team, followed closely by Hana and Miho who are both wearing volleyball uniforms.

“They’re competing?” You hear Azusa ask.

“Well Duck team needed bodies,” Anzu chips in.

“And Hana and Miho were the first people to say yes when the Ducks asked,” Saori finishes.

“Did they compete in all the matches?” You ask but Saori shakes her head.

“All the matches before today didn’t need six people, but for today there has to be six.”

“Are they any good?” Yuzu asks.

“Well they just need to get the ball in the air for Duck team to finish it,” Saori replies.

“That’s not an answer,” you point out.

“Well, it is an answer,” Momo counters. “Just not a very inspiring one.”

“This is going to be good,” Anzu cackles.

Yukari looks like she wants to jump to Miho’s defence but is stopped by the beginning of the matches. Ooarai is up for one of the first matches against a land-based school you’ve never heard of.

Duck team makes short work of them.

You along with a sizeable percentage of the spectators watch in horrified awe as the poor girls on the other team are torn apart. Duck team are monsters in comparison, never allowing the ball close to the floor, blasting spikes straight at them and jumping high enough you reckon they’d go over Werewolf. The sole point for the other team comes from Miho slipping and falling over, knocking the ball the wrong way.

It’s no surprise when their match ends quickly. Another one begins quickly afterwards and you spot some familiar faces on the Saunders team. Black Forest also has a team, but you can’t see Erika or Koume on it.

>“Have you seen anyone we know on the other teams?”

“Huh? Oh! The other teams!” Saori doesn’t seem to have recovered completely from watching Duck team do in that other school. “I saw Alisa on the Saunders team, and a lot of Black Forest girls that look vaguely familiar, but no one else.”

“Probably because we usually roll in Sensha-Do circles and this is a volleyball tournament,” you muse. “Why would anyone we know be here?”

>Go congratulate Duck team (plus Miho and Hana) on their sextuple homicide.

A couple members of Rabbit team are already on their feet headed to where Duck team are sitting. You get up to join them, followed closely by the rest of Anglerfish team, quickly becoming everyone heading to congratulate them.

“Congratulations on your win!” Ayumi cheers. Noriko attempts to reply but she’s too out of breath. The rest of Duck team aren’t much better, and Hana and Miho seem to be in shock, despite doing half as much as the rest of Duck team.

“Will they be okay for the next match?” You ask as you poke Miho. There’s no reaction apart from a slight twitch of the eye.

“We just need people to fill the holes,” Shinobu replies. “And they’ve done better than anyone else.”

“President Isuzu has a mean spike,” Akebi nods.

“And Commander Nishizumi’s reactions are great,” Taeko adds. “I think we’re going to win.”

“Really, what does the competition look like?”

“Well, Saunders are the biggest threat,” Noriko says. “They have money to pump into any and every sport. The rest of the teams are mostly amateurs.”

“And you’re not?” Azusa asks.

“We’re two novices,” Noriko points to Hana and Miho, “and four professionals.”

“Right! Of course,” Azusa nods enthusiastically.

>“Professional professionals or just professionals?”

“Professionals, soon to be professional professional,” Noriko answers. Most of Rabbit team look completely lost, but the ex-council and Anglerfish team get it.

“Well, I’m sure that winning a tournament like this will help you become professional professionals,” you reply. There are a few giggles from the members of your group that understand. “Who’s your next opponent?”

“Well, there are only four teams left including us,” Shinobu replies. “Black Forest, Saunders and a Tokyo midtown land-based school. It could be any of the three.”

“We’ll be finding out right about now,” Akebi adds. She’s proven right when about five minutes later, one of the organisers goes out to the scoreboard and starts putting up names.

“Saunders…” Taeko mutters. “The one team we didn’t want to face right now.”

“I think that’s our queue to get out of your way,” Anzu declares as she watches the other spectators filing back the the stands. “Make Ooarai proud! We’ve always believed in you!”

“You’re the one that shut our club down though,” Shinobu points out. “We only have one because the Sensha-Do club agreed to fund it.”

“And who made sure the Sensha-Do club had the money to make the money to fund you?” Anzu asks.

“Commander Nishizumi and Commander Hermann,” all four of them answer.

You spot Yuzu giggling behind Anzu’s back. “Come on, Anzu, let’s get back to our seats.”

The ex-President looks like she wants to protest but decides against it. “Make Ooarai proud.”

“You can count on that!” Noriko declares as they begin their trek to the court. You watch them for a moment before beginning your own journey back to the stands.

“Hana and Miho looked like they were running on fumes,” Saori mutters. “I hope they’ll be alright.”

>“They’re tough girls, I’m sure they’ll be fine.”

“Some of the toughest I’ve ever met,” Yukari agrees, nodding. “I’m sure they’ll be fine, Miss Takebe!”

“Right, it must just be me being a worrywart,” Saori chuckles nervously. “They’ve stayed awake for almost whole day before for matches, I’m sure a couple more matches won’t be too much for them!”

“Besides, they have Duck team there with them,” Yuzu adds as she takes a seat next to you. “We saw just how good they are a moment ago!”

“Even they were worried about Saunders though,” Momo points out. “It’s a shame they didn’t have time to organically get more members.”

“And who’s fault is that?” Mako grumbles.

“MEXT,” Anzu replies. “The source of all our problems and bane of our existence.”

“Which we don’t have to worry about,” Yuzu reminds her, flicking Anzu’s forehead.

The conversation is ended by the volleyball team heading to the centre court. All the lights apart from the most powerful ones illuminating the centre are killed, and you can see the beads of sweat on the volleyball team’s faces.

The game starts with Saunders serving, and you’re on the edge of your seat as the ball goes back and forwards. The rallies are short and sharp, both sides using the minimum possible movements to get the ball over the net.

“Conserving energy,” you hear Yukari mutter. You can’t help but agree that’s the right play – already they’re doing worse than in previous matches – being neck and neck with Saunders rather than the commanding lead that they had last time.

As half time approaches, the situation hasn’t changed. Miho and Hana have surprisingly done well for themselves, not surrendering any more points than the rest of Duck team, and Hana managing a nasty spike or two.

>Make sure Duck team are properly pampered.

>Make sure Duck team are properly pampered.

Half time soon comes, and the second it does, you’re on your feet.

“Where are you going?” Yuzu asks.

“To see if the Volleyball team need anything,” you reply before turning around and marching off. Saori follows, and the two of you stop only to get some ice-cold water before heading to the team.

“You guys have done great out there!” Saori cheers as you begin distributing the ice water.

“It doesn’t seem to be enough though,” Taeko moans. “They’re so good! They’ve kept up with everything we do.”

“The lot of you have also kept up with them,” you remind them before turning to Miho and Hana. “Including the two of you.”

“Oh well, you know. One step at a time,” Miho offers. You take over holding the ice pack to her forehead so she can take a drink.

“Will you be able to keep it up?” Saori asks. She’s behind Akebi, massaging her shoulders. “And there’s a match afterwards too…”

“The next match is a problem for later,” Noriko retorts, jumping to her feet. You promptly force her to sit back down and rest for however long she can.

Unfortunately, she doesn’t have too long. The bell soon goes and the six of them are up again, heading for the court. You do the same, heading back the stands with Saori.

When the match kicks off with Noriko serving, it continues the same way it started. The stadium is silent, save for the grunts of the players and the squeaking of shoes on the court. The volleyball team doesn’t give an inch, and soon they’re eeking out a lead. Barely more than a point or two, but it’s still a lead. They rapidly approach twenty five points, with Saunders trailing close behind them.

You watch a serve from Miho and from the second it leaves her hands, it looks too slow and too high. You can tell from the rapid movement on the Saunders team they’ve spotted it. One jumps to hit it higher and keep it in the air. Another jumps, getting behind it and spiking the ball down.

“Jump!” You hear Noriko cry. The three Ducks do instantly, and Akebi is just high enough – just close enough that she’s able to slam it down and win the match.

>Head to the Volleyball team and congratulate them and help them prepare.

This time, all of you get up and head to the Ducks. They’ve retired from the courtside into a section of the stands reserved for the competitors. You’re not allowed into the section, but you move right to the edge of your side, and the volleyball team does the same on their side, meaning you’re effectively sitting together.

“Great job, girls!” Anzu cheers as she approaches. “Really making Ooarai proud out there!”

“That’s the plan!” Akebi huffs.

“Nice shot by the way,” you say as you take a seat getting a thumbs up from her.

“All that training finally paying off, huh?” She huffs.

Saori has brought more water with her and doles it out to the members of Duck team. They take it with muted thanks, but all eyes are on the next match.

“Who do you think is going to win?” Azusa asks as she watches the rally.

“Black Forest,” Noriko replies. “They have more Guts and more brains than their opponents.”

“Well, you said Saunders was the hardest competition, right?” Azusa continues. “So you should be able to beat Black Forest too?”

“Not exactly,” Shinobu replies, shaking her head. “Just because Saunders have the best record it doesn’t mean beating them means we can beat another team.”

“So, it’s like Pokemon,” Aya adds, nodding sagely.

“I suppose…” Shinobu nods.

The match continues, and all eyes turn to it. Unlike the Ooarai-Saunders match, this one is faster paced. Rallies are even shorter, points are being scored and several of the girls look like they’re going to pass out.

None of them do though, and by the third set, Black Forest are clearly in the lead. The match doesn’t last long after that.

“Decisive and strong, just like their Sensha-Do,” Miho muses aloud.

>“The lot of you are better rested, so you might be able to keep up a higher pace.”
>“You got this far by playing calmly, so I’d keep it up.”

>“You got this far by playing calmly, so I’d keep it up.”

“Yeah, we did,” Noriko hums thoughtfully, stroking her chin.

“We were planning to up the pace since we’re better rested and probably better players,” Shinobu explains. “But now that you mention it, it might be better to conserve our strength so we can out last them.”

You don’t miss how Shinobu glances over at Miho and Hana either, both of whom look just as ragged as you’d expect someone who’s been playing volleyball all day to be.

“Yukari, do we have any sugary snacks?” You ask.

She looks confused for a moment before realising where you’re probably going with it. She looks around before spotting Mako who’s acquired a fizzy drink and some sweets.

“Sorry Miss Reizei,” Yukari apologises as she snatches them.

“My drink…” Mako complains.

“I’ll buy you another one,” you reply as you take them from Yukari before handing them to Miho and Hana. “Eat.”

“I would hate to be them after the match when they come down,” Shinobu mutters. “Or you.”

“They’ll forgive me,” you shrug. “Probably.”

Despite any potential concequences, the sugar injection seems to have done the trick. Both Hana and Miho look like they’ll be able to stand for the match.

“Good luck!” Yuzu cheers as they file down, onto the court.

“Fight well!” you offer. “Show them your GUTS!”

“GUTS! GUTS! GUTS!” Rabbit team behind you take up the chant with enthusiasm. You can see them getting a couple of dirty looks from other spectators.

>Join their chant.

One older woman is giving the Rabbits and Azusa in particular a nasty glare. You look back and see your junior starting to quail slightly. You can’t help but frown at that, but short of making a scene, how could you help.

The answer is obvious – make yourself a bigger target.

GUTS! GUTS! GUTS! GUTS!” You chant as loud as you can. You’re a fair bit bigger than the Rabbits, meaning your chant is a fair bit louder. There are six of them however, and your support encourages them to compete to be even louder.

Yuzu produced a tiny flag with your school’s logo on it – it isn’t even the size of your hand, but you take it from her and wave it with reckless abandon. You’re pretty sure you look stupid, but you can see the volleyball team laughing at you, and you’d rather them be amused than intimidated by what they’re about to face.

The match starts a moment later. You watch as Black Forest attempts to keep up their blistering pace. They’re not as fast as they were before – the ball is fumbled several times, there’s a moment of hesitation before a big jump, but they’re still playing faster than Duck team who are doing their best to play calm.

Unfortunately, the effort difference shows, and by the halfway mark, Black Forest have a lead and are only gaining.

Duck team stumble back to their seats to rest, and the lot of you storm over armed with water and snacks which they happily accept.

“They’re winning…” Akebi whines. “It’s hard to stay calm when we’re losing.”

>“Then don’t, now’s the time to put everything into it!”

>“You just have to stick it out a little longer before they collapse.”

You reassure her. “Go on, look at the Black Forest girls now. They look dead on their feet, and there’s still half a match left to go.”

All six of them follow your gazes, and the Black Forest girls are just as out of it as you suggested. Most of them are lying down, doing their best to recover what strength they can, but there’s one with a nurse looking them over, only proving your point.

“See,” you say. “Dead as doornails wheras the lot of you could probably jog around the stadium with ease.”

“Ease is a… strong word,” Hana murmurs from nearby.

“You get my point though,” you shrug. “Just keep doing what you’re doing and you’re going to win.”

“Right, that sounds like a good plan. Thanks, Commander,” Noriko says.

“Just as good on the volleyball court as the Sensha-Do field, ey, Commander?” Shinobu teases.

“I’m better on the side of the volleyball court,” you reply as they laugh. “Now get out there and win.”

“You heard him,” Noriko declares as they all stand. “Let’s win!”

“Aye, Captain!” The other members of Duck team shout as they stand. Hana and Miho don’t but they smile and stand nonetheless.

“Good luck!” Yuzu says again as they train down towards the centre court. You keep your eye on the Black Forest team, and just as expect it looks like it takes far more out of them just getting to the stadium.

“I hope they win,” Ayumi murmurs. “Duck team have worked so hard for this.”

“I’d assume that the other teams also worked hard,” Aya replies. “You saw just how hard Black Forest were able to play.”

>“As true as that may be, I’d still rather we win.”

“Definitely! Definitely! I want Duck team to win,” Aya states. “I was just pointing out that other people have worked hard for it too.”

You fix her with a glare which she returns. A moment later Aya sticks her tongue out at you. You can’t hold it after that and hide your smile by rolling your eyes and shaking your head.

“Azusa, control your teammate, would you?” You ask.

“Of course, Commander!” Azusa answers before swinging around to Aya.

You ignore the goings on behind you and turn your attention back to the court where the match has just restarted. Black Forest is still leading in points, though the lead is slowly slipping, the points getting closer and closer.

One girl looks familiar. You watch her for a moment before you manage to place her as one of Axel’s girlfriends. You watch as she jumps for the ball, but the jump is just weak enough that she can’t hit it properly, causing the ball to tumble. One of her teammates dives for it and manages to blast it back over the net, but it’s too high, and you watch as Noriko launches herself into the air to wack it back down.

It hits another Black Forest girl on the way down who’s too slow to respond before hitting the floor.

“They definitely have this,” Yuzu murmurs.

“Definitely,” you nod, and their performance seems to support that. The pressure on the other team also means that Miho and Hana are granted a little reprieve. Not much – they’re barely better than the Black Forest girls, but they can at least reach the ball.

By the end of the match, Duck team is clawing back points, still going strong. Black Forest on the other hand has already shot their shot. You can see they’re all fast enough to react to the ball, but none of them are fresh enough to reach it, either missing entirely or barely getting it over the net, setting the volleyball team up for a devestating return.

The end is almost anti-climactic. A crisp serve from Miho. A strong if slow return from Black Forest. A spike from Akebi that almost hits the floor. A hurried return that goes too high. Taeko slamming it as hard as she can, causing the ball to bounce off the floor and off into the stands.

>Congratulate the Ducks.

The moment the ball hits the floor, you’re up off your seat. So is most of the stadium, but unlike them, you vault the barrier between the stands and the courtside and take off towards the volleyball team.

You can hear your friends behind you doing the same, but you ignore them in favour of running at the Ducks. They’re sitting on the floor together, so you do the smart thing and fall to your knees and slide.

There’s a shout of warning from one of them, but they’re all too tired to get out of the way, so you collide with them like a bowling ball and have about the same effect too.

“Oww,” Akebi groans.

“Commander…” Shinobu whines.

“No time for that,” you reply as you sit up. “Damn good job girls. We’re all proud of you.”

“Damn right we are!” Anzu cheers as she approaches. “That’s the best volleyball match I’ve ever seen!”

“You’ve only seen two, Pr- Anzu,” Yuzu replies.

“The point stands,” Anzu dismisses.

>Make sure that Hana and Miho are still alive.

While Rabbit team arrives to help Duck team, you turn your attention to Hana and Miho. The rest of Anglerfish team is already there. Hana is propped on Saori’s lap, Miho being kept up by Yukari and Mako on top of Hana. That last one throws you for a loop before you remember Mako is Mako.

“Well done, guys,” you say softly as you take a seat next to them.

“I’ll make sure to enjoy it once I’ve recovered,” Hana smiles.

“I’ll make sure to enjoy it when I can walk again,” Miho giggles.

“It’s not that bad, surely?” You ask.

“It is,” Miho nods sagely. “I think you’ll have to carry me.”

>“Okay.”

“Huh? I was-”

You don’t get an opportunity to find out exactly what Miho is, as you scoop her up before she can finish.

“Ah!” She cries out as you do, wrapping her arms around your neck. You don’t keep her there for long though – a moment to brace and a grunt later, you push her up, so you’re able to put her over your shoulder.

“Comfortable?” You ask.

“No,” Miho groans.

“Good,” you reply before turning to your watching audience. “Where are we going?”

“The stage, to collect our rewards,” Noriko replies. “Follow me.”

“Aye, aye, Cap’n,” you reply, setting off after the girl, Miho still on your shoulder.

“Fritz you can -oof! Put me- down!” Miho manages to say as she flails over your shoulder.

“Nonsense. You said you needed to be carried, don’t you? It’s no trouble, so don’t worry about it.”

“I- can walk!” She warbles. “Put me down!”

“We’re almost there anyway,” you reply. Sure enough, a moment later, you reach the stage and you put Miho down. She promptly falls on her butt and glares up at you.

“This is the point where you thank me,” you inform her. She just intensifies her glare.

Miho opens her mouth to say something, but before she can, she’s dragged up onto the stage by Hana and Shinobu.

The awards ceremony isn’t anything particularly special. Duck team and other two top teams all get on stage and are given medals, with Duck team getting a nice trophy. What is special though is a group of what you reckon are talent scouts talking to some of the members of each team, all four Ducks included.

>Take anyone that’s willing to come out.

It takes some time for the ceremony and awards to finish. You don’t get a chance to talk to volleyball team right after as the moment they’re released, they head for the changing room.

While you’re waiting for them outside with the others, an idea comes to mind.

“We should go out to celebrate,” you say. “Especially since we’re in Tokyo. Who knows when we’ll get another chance like this?”

“Will the volleyball team want to come?” Yuzu asks. “I’m sure they’re very tired after today.”

“I’m also sure that they’re going to be very hungry,” you counter. “So why not at least deal with one of their problems?”

“I suppose it won’t hurt to offer,” Yuzu decides.

About ten minutes later, the six of them stumble out of the changing rooms – Hana and Miho more than Duck team.

“Feeling tired?” You ask Miho as she approaches.

“Defi-no! I’m not!” She corrects herself, glaring at you. It seems she hasn’t forgotten the non-consensual carrying yet. “I’m fresh as can be.”

“Good,” you reply, grinning back at her. “I was going to suggest we go out for dinner. To celebrate.”

“I’ve already eaten,” Ayumi frowns.

“Well, you don’t have to come. I can’t order you to,” you reply. “Can I?”

“No,” Hana replies. “Neither can I for that matter.”

“It’d be very useful if we could though,” Yukari muses, looking at Miho.

“You’re not a politician, Yukari!” Saori declares, lightly slapping the girl. “I’m in favour of going out too!”

There’s a brief debate as it’s decided who’s going and who isn’t. Most of Rabbit team decides to break away and head off somewhere else, leaving you with just Azusa and Aya which is perfectly fine.

“I suppose now we have to decide where we’re going, no?” Hana asks.

“We should go somewhere fancy! To celebrate properly!” Saori suggests.

“I don’t think we’re properly dressed for that,” Shinobu retorts. “A decent steak place is enough.”

“Or we could get something quick and cheap,” Mako chips in from behind Saori. “Like KFC…”

>Support Shinobu’s suggestion.

You listen to them chatter about the suggestions for a while before you decide to weigh in.

“I like steak,” you muse, throwing your support behind Shinobu’s suggestion. That plus the rest of the rabid carnivores in Duck team tips the balance in favour of steak.

“I know a decent place around here,” Anzu volunteers. “Hell, I’m sure they’ll accept us, despite being as ragged as we are.”

“Ragged?” You ask, looking your clothes over.

“Ragged,” Anzu nods. You look to Yuzu for answers, but she just smiles and shrugs.

“Do you want to lead the way then?” Shinobu asks.

“Sure thing!” Anzu cheers. She pushes open the door and the lot of you follow her out. Anzu leads you to the nearest bus stop and within minutes you’re on one heading in the right direction.

“I assume you’ve been here before,” you say to Anzu as you take a seat next to her on the bus.

“Many times,” Anzu nods. “Probably every time I’m in the capital.”

“With your family?” You ask, getting another nod.

“Usually,” she confirms. “Sometimes Kawashima or Koyama come with me.”

“So it’s a good restaurant?” Hana asks Yuzu.

“Definitely,” she nods. “I’ve enjoyed it every time I’ve gone.”

“Perfect,” Noriko grins, rubbing her hands together. You quickly reach your stop and the lot of you get off and stream towards the restaurant. Anzu pulls ahead to go talk to whoever’s inside.

You watch her point to the group from outside and you can immediately see the server’s reluctance to let you in. A moment later, another man appears from the back to greet Anzu. A moment after that, the lot of you are being ushered towards a table.

“I hope the prices are good…” you mutter as you look around. While it’s not the Ritz, it’s not a low-end place.

“They are,” Momo confirms. “At least I think they are.”

You take a seat amongst the ex-student council with Azusa opposite you. Anglerfish team are further down the table.

>Ask Duck team what they were asked about.

“So, Duck team,” you begin over Yuzu’s head. “What were you asked about on the stage.”

“It was a talent scout!” Akebi cheers. “They asked what year we’re in and when we finish school!”

“Why’s that?” Azusa asks.

“They think we’re the greatest volleyball players this side of Japan!” Noriko exclaims, earning a fist to the head from Shinobu.

“They think,” Shinobu speaks. “That we did a pretty good job of it, and gave us some contact details for the holiday. They also told us that if we keep it up for two years – one in the Captain’s case, that they’d have a place for us on a team.”

“Not before that?” You ask.

“Oversubscribed,” Shinobu explains. “Too many people want too few slots.”

“I reckon if we prove we’re better, we might be able to jump the queue!” Akebi exclaims.

There’s excitable chatter around the table as Duck team speculates on what they need to do to stand out. It’s interrupted a few minutes later by a waiter arriving to take your order.

As the others order you quickly decide what you’re going to have.

>Get something else that looks good – a ‘filet minion’?

“I’ll have a filet minion, please.”

There’s a moment of silence before Yuzu snorts and breaks out laughing.

“Filet Mignon,” Anzu corrects, trying and failing to hide her mirth. Hana and Miho look just as amused but most of the rest of the table doesn’t seem to get it.

“I thought that was how it was pronounced,” Akebi murmurs before being shushed by Shinobu who explains it to her.

The food arrives a few minutes later and is promptly devoured, followed shortly by complementary desserts. Apparently, the owner is a friend of Anzu’s parents, explaining the little interaction you saw through the window.

The lot of you head back to Ooarai. Miho despite falling asleep on the bus escapes being carried curtesy of Yukari who Miho orders to guard her. You’re tempted to go for it anyway, but you’d rather she not pull a grenade on you.

That morning is a rather normal one – waking up, feeding Otto, failing a couple of times to get out of bed. What isn’t normal, is the video your sister sent you.

You watch it as you eat. Initially, it’s just the countryside and farmland moving rather fast. That is until Erika unzooms the camera and you notice she’s in a tank. It takes you about a second to realise that it’s a Leopard, and the camera being point at another tank next to her to realise it’s a Leopard 2A7, the latest and greatest. She turns the camera the other way, and you see that she’s rolling with three other tanks, plus the one she’s in – a whole tank platoon.

All tanks! Target ahead! Three kilometres!” You hear her call out. There’s a series of booms as the guns of the entire platoon fire, and you watch as a small blob several kilometres away disappears into a fireball.

Rather than admit that was rather cool and that you’re rather jealous, you decide to do the think most likely to annoy her. You send her a single thumbs up emoji and see about going about your day.

>Grab Yuzu and the council and decide what to do today.

You send a message to Yuzu and the rest of the ex-council to see if they’re free today. Thankfully, you messaged them rather early in the morning, so they haven’t had time to make any.

Anzu proposes a café on the ship that you’ve all been to before, which you have no problem with and agree to meet them there.

Like last time, when you arrive, they have already ordered several pastries. Like last time, you order a drink then set about demolishing them.

“So, Fritz, you arranged this. What were you thinking of doing?” Anzu asks.

>Suggest Minigolf.

“How about minigolf?” You suggest. “They have that in Ooarai, right?”

“They do, I think,” Momo hums. “I’ve never been before though.”

“Then now’s the perfect time to go,” you state. “It’s a nice sunny morning! The perfect day to do so!”

“A nice sunny October morning,” Yuzu reminds you.

“So, we can stay warm with minigolf,” you reply.

“I don’t think it’s exactly the most intensive sport,” Anzu replies. None of them decline though, and after polishing off what remains of the pastries, the four of you begin the trip to the Ooarai minigolf courses.

It’s not a long trip – once you depart the schoolship you don’t even need to take the bus – just walk out of port and into the city.

“So have any of you played minigolf before?” You ask.

“I’ve taken some of my siblings to play,” Yuzu offers. “I’ve never actually played it myself.”

“I’ve played actual golf,” Anzu replies. “It’s a bit hard since the clubs are usually almost as tall as me, but how hard can minigolf be?”

“It’s a very different game,” Momo replies. “A lot more control is necessary than in golf.”

“I take it you’ve played minigolf before then?” You ask, getting a nod from Momo.

“And we’ve all played golf before,” Momo adds.

You soon reach the golf course and you’re mildly amused to realise that it’s pirate themed. According to the signs posted nearby that’s because of Ooarai’s maritime heritage, something not unexpected since it’s a port town.

“Fritz, you never mentioned if you’ve played it before,” Yuzu states.

>“I’m basically a pro.”

“Really now, a pro?” Yuzu asks, eyebrow raised. “So, you’ll wipe the floor with us poor old amateurs.”

“Who knows?” You reply with a grin. “Maybe I will.”

“I think we’ll be seeing about that,” Momo states. You look up at her, and see a small smile on her face.

The four of you enter and acquire your clubs and balls. The first one looks simple – just a straight path from the tee to the hole, but the ground is uneven. You manage to get it in in a couple of taps, but Momo chips the ball over most of the uneven ground, straight into the hole.

It takes Yuzu several tries as well – slightly more than you, but less than Anzu who struggles horribly with the first hole.

“I guess golf experience doesn’t translate to minigolf,” Yuzu observes. That earns her a glare from Anzu who dramatically huffs and stomps over to the next stage.

Unfortunately, it turns out that experience does make a difference. While Momo does horribly on the next hole with Yuzu managing to fluke a hole in one, Anzu and Momo dominate the next three holes, alternating between first and second. Yuzu manages to scrape second on the sixth hole, but Momo remains at the top.

You quickly do the maths and it seems that Momo is ahead by a massive amount, followed by Anzu, with Yuzu in third and yourself in last.

“So, professional, huh?” Momo asks.

>“Act broke to stay rich, you wouldn’t understand.”

“I see, so you’re losing on purpose?” Momo asks, nodding thoughtfully as if she’s considering it while approaching the next hole. “I think you should just watch and learn.” Momo promptly hits the ball far too hard, sending it into the next hole.

“I’m learning a lot from this,” you say aloud as she grows angrier and angrier at the hole, failing it horribly only for Anzu to casually tap the ball into place and yourself and Yuzu to muddle through it slightly faster than she did.

Momo manages to make up for it on the next hole – managing to curve her ball around several objects in one shot that took the rest of you several to get around. That hole even gets the better of Anzu who’s forced to forfeit it, because every time she gets it close to the hole, it seems to fall into a nearby gutter that takes it straight back to the beginning. Her first shot on the next hole goes in which you’re sure is luck.

Unfortunately, yet again, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Despite winning the tenth hole, with Yuzu right behind you, Anzu goes on to dominate the next two holes, hitting her stride with Momo not far behind her. You and Yuzu are almost left in the dirt, fighting to get out of last place, and currently you’re losing.

“You’re doing a pretty good job of losing on purpose,” Momo says, patting you on the back as the four of you take a short break from playing.

“As I said earlier, you wouldn’t understand,” you reply, dismissing it.

“If this is how broke you’re acting, you must be very rich,” Yuzu adds, pouncing on the blood in the water.

“You’re one to talk,” you say, jabbing her in the rib and getting a giggle out of her. “You’re only a couple of points ahead of me.”

Still, they all raise a valid point, if you don’t do something, then you’re going to come either dead last or third.

>Put less into it, you’re overshooting the mark every time

As you sip away at a coke you’ve acquired as you take a moment’s break, you contemplate your conundrum. You’re behind everyone else – Anzu and Momo who are pulling far ahead.

While that’s not to be unexpected – both have more experience than you, you’re also behind Yuzu who’s had absolutely zero experience with minigolf which can’t be allowed to stand.

“Brooding over not being good at something,” Yuzu teases as she takes a seat next to you. “It’s alright to lose at something you know?”

“I do, it doesn’t mean I like it though,” you grumble in reply, getting a giggle out of her.

“Maybe you’re acting too broke,” she says through giggles.

You think on her words for a moment. “Or maybe, I’m not acting broke enough.”

“Anymore broke and you’ll be bankrupt,” she snickers, but you’re already decided – you’ll try less.

Your theory that you need to act even broker seems to bear fruit throughout the last six holes.

You come second on the thirteenth one, finishing well in advance of Anzu who has yet another hole she can’t finish. The thirteenth hole is the last one that Momo wins, with you effectively dominating the last six holes, winning three of them, with Yuzu taking one and Anzu the other. However, despite not winning any of the last five holes, Momo’s just behind the winner for all of them, managing to stay competitive.

After the last hole, all three of them crowd around you as you tally up the scores. Yuzu’s is the first you do and it becomes clear pretty quickly that she won’t be winning anything. Momo comes first, barely, winning only by a single point to yourself and Anzu who somehow managed to stay competitive despite failing two separate holes.

“I just don’t understand!” Momo exclaims. “Anzu makes sense since she’s played golf before but you were barely competing with Yuzu till the twelfth hole!”

>“I acted broker, I got richer. Basic economics.”

“You what?” Momo looks utterly and thoroughly confused. “Whatever, you didn’t win which is the main thing.”

“But he came close,” Anzu speaks up, eager to get her licks in. “As close as mwah! Who’s not bad at golf at all.”

“Cheer up, Momo-chan! There’s always time to learn before we get to university!”

“I…I…I,” Momo seems to struggle for words for a moment before shaking her head. “It doesn’t matter, we’re not going to think about it.”

“You’re going to try not to think about it,” you counter.

>Suggest going out for dessert afterwards.

“The night is still young, should we head out and get dessert?” You ask.

“It’s late afternoon,” Yuzu replies, after glancing into the sky.

“To be fair, that does mean it’s pretty young,” Anzu adds. “As in the same way a foetus is young.”

“You get my point,” you reply, rolling your eyes.

“Well as long as you’re paying,” Anzu grins. “I’m broke.”

“Really?” Momo and Yuzu say simultaneously, looking at her. You get the impression that she probably isn’t broke.

“Really,” she nods, managing to ignore the looks she’s getting from both. “Horrifically broke.”

“Broke or not, it’s fine. It’s just dessert,” you reply. “Now shall we get going?”

Yuzu directs you to a nearby shopping centre on the high street. You pass through the shopping centre, which delays you slightly as the girls stop occasionally to debate things they see in the windows, eventually though you make it onto the high street and into the dessert parlour. It’s rather busy for a Thursday afternoon but after a short wait, you’re able to find a table and a couple of menus.

>Get one of those massive sundaes and share it with Yuzu.

After taking a moment to scan the menu, you spot something that looks interesting.

“They have a lot of sundaes on the menu,” you say as you flick through it. “Fourteen of them.”

“Really?” Yuzu rests her head on your shoulder, scanning the menu. “A ‘Banana Split’, huh?”

“Interested in a classic?” You ask her.

“It looks very big though…”

“We can share?” You offer. She smiles and kisses you on the cheek which you’re pretty sure is a yes.

“Could I take your order?” A waiter approaches your table, notepad in hand.

“I’ll have pancakes with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream!” Anzu declares first.

“One scoop of chocolate and one scoop of strawberry in a chocolate cone,” Momo adds.

“And we’ll have a banana split,” Yuzu says. He notes it down and walks off. You mentally tally the price in your head and it’s a reasonable one.

“Scared we were going to take advantage of your generosity?” Anzu grins, guessing at your thoughts.

“Scared you were going to take advantage of my generosity,” you counter.

“Please,” Anzu snorts, dismissing you with a hand. “I’d never do something like that.”

“If you say so,” you shrug, leaving it at that. The desserts arrive a few minutes later, and the four of you tuck in. The banana split, as expected, is plenty banana-ry and between taking your own bites of it, you take a couple of chances to feed bites to Yuzu as well, who returns the favour. As the sundae depletes, and both of you become more and more full, it slowly becomes a game of who can get the other to eat more of it, with Anzu egging both of you on from the side.

Yuzu wins. Mainly because the banana split was tasty, and if she’s willing to feed it to you so much the better, but you make sure to put up the necessary fuss.

Eventually, as it begins to reach evening, you head home. Anzu and Momo split, despite your best efforts to get them to stay, and Yuzu makes to leave as well, saying she needs to be up early tomorrow since she’s going home for a bit. Thankfully, you manage to convince her to stay.

Friday 26th October (Day 193)

When you wake up that morning, you’re delighted to find out that Yuzu has not left yet. Otto also seems to be enjoying the extra warmth as he’s managed to worm his way inside the blanket, sandwiched between the two of you.

Unfortunately, good things don’t last forever and you’re just beginning to drift off again when the cry of an alarm cuts through the room. It certainly startles Otto if the way he leaps out of the bed and darts into the living room is any indication. Yuzu yawns and begins to get up.

“Don’t go,” you grumble from beneath the blanket as she slowly rolls out of bed.

“No can do,” she giggles as she gets up and stretches. “I’ll only be gone a day and a half, I’m sure you can find something else to do.”

“But I don’t wanna,” you complain. She giggles again, before changing and departing, leaving you to stew in bed for a bit.

>Go see what a different group is doing. (Hippo team)

Eventually, you can’t stay in bed any longer and after getting up and changing, you decide to head out and see what another team is doing. You quickly decide on Hippo team, especially since you’ve not hung out with them properly in a while.

“Anyone home?” You shout as you knock on the door. It’s opened a few moments later by Erwin.

“Hey, Mackensen!” Caesar greets you. “Congratulations on winning the Unlimited-lite!”

“It was a team effort,” you reply, dismissing the praise as you’re let in. “What are you guys doing? Anything cool?”

“We’re still working on the gold,” Caesar replies.

“Or more specifically, what to do next,” Erwin pipes up.

“In regard to the situation in general or the gold itself?” You ask.

“Both,” Saemonza says. “We all think there’s no reason to sell the gold – perhaps send it to a museum since it’s not doing anything.”

“Which it’s doing right now,” Erwin points out, gesturing to a bar that’s being used as a door stopper.

“And for the situation itself, we are torn between confronting the Nagayama Corporation or just writing a report and releasing it to the wild,” Caesar finishes.

>Confronting a corporation sounds pointless and dangerous. Suggest just writing the report and releasing it.

“Right, first things first. Let’s not pick a fight with one of the biggest companies in Japan. I’d rather not have to fight off any corporate hit squads.”

“We’re pretty well equipped to do it though,” Erwin muses.

“Would they even do it?” Saemonza asks.

“Coca-cola hired hitmen to take out trade union leaders,” Oryou chips in. “If they’re unscrupulous enough to use blood money, who knows?”

“Once we release the report, it’ll only be a matter of time before someone else puts the connection together,” Caesar warns.

“But if the news is released by a big newspaper that’s not our problem, is it?”

>Agree with sending it to a museum, you don’t have any need of it.

“The hit squads thing was a joke,” you sigh. “But at least that’s that agreed on. What about the gold itself, a museum?”

“A museum,” all four of them echo at the same time.

“The Ministry of Culture pays out for valuable finds like this, so we can split it six ways,” Caesar says. “Besides I don’t know how to launder gold.”

“Maybe Ooarai has a foundry somewhere,” Erwin muses.

“Six?” You ask.

“Five of us plus the school getting a cut. Since we found the stuff that led to the discovery on Ooarai.”

“Implying that we give it to a Japanese museum,” you point out. “We might want to return it to the Philippines.”

You can tell from the silence afterward that there are mixed opinions on where it should go.

After a few moments of silence, Caesar speaks up.

“How about we write the report first, then decide where we’re going to send it and who we’re going to contact?”

“That sounds good to me,” you nod. “Shall we girls?”

The entire club seems to agree with that and after taking some time to make preparations – gathering notes, dividing up the work, and acquiring snacks to last you, the five of you get to work.

After a couple of hours of work, while taking a break, Caesar wanders over. “Should we exclude anything from our report?”

>Exclude the coins you decided to keep.

You take a moment to think about it.

“Just the coins that we want to keep,” you suggest. “Everything else I want to get out there properly, but I’d rather not have any awkward questions about the missing gold coins.”

“I was thinking the same thing,” Caesar nods. “Especially since they’re pretty valuable. If we mention them and they don’t show up, we’re going to have a lot of awkward questions.”

“So, it’s just better to avoid them,” you nod.

“Perfect, with that sorted, we can get on with finishing this report,” she cheers. “I’ll be glad to see the back of it.”

“Not a fan of writing?” You ask, getting a vigorous nod of the head.

“I’ve always been more interested in the practical side,” she replies. “The documentation? Not so much.”

“That looks like a common sentiment,” you muse, looking around the room. Every single person in it is dragging their feet when it comes to finishing the writing, and you’re no exception.

“We’ll have to finish it eventually,” you sigh as you stomp your way back to a computer. That seems to be the cue for the rest of the team to drag themselves back to computers and get to work.

Thankfully, between five historians, the work is rather light, and by midway through the afternoon, the report is more or less ready.

>Suggest just publishing the report and seeing who comes knocking.

That just leaves the question of who to give the gold to. As you guessed earlier, opinions are divided on who to approach – if anyone at all. When you suggest just publishing the report and seeing who’s interested in taking it off your hands, that seems to be acceptable to everyone even if it’s no one’s ideal solution.

You’re done by the end of the afternoon, giving you the rest of the evening.

You stay with the History club a little longer – just to help with polishing off the report and helping them draft the letter attached to the report. That’s done quickly, and there’s a round of celebration as the send button is pressed.

>Go see how the film club has been doing.

You decide against staying any longer though. You say goodbye to the Hippos for now and make your way out of their house and towards the school building. It’s been a while since you’ve seen the film club and you wonder how they’re doing now that they’ve received the massive cash injection they have.

You make your way into the main school building and towards the room that the film club uses as a headquarters. The door, like most school doors, has a small window that you can peak through, into the classroom. You peek in, and upon seeing that there are people inside, knock on the door and walk in.

“Ze point of ze door and knocking, is zat you’re meant to wait for permission to enter,” Eiga snaps at you as you enter.

“I thought we were past that,” you reply, purposefully missing the point. “Since we’re friends and all that.”

“We’re not friends,” Yusa snaps immediately.

“Not even since the Sensha-Do club saved your club from bankruptcy? Or we got you a movie at the Saunders Culture Festival?”

“The club’s been all they can talk about for the last week,” Kuta says softly. The other two move to silence her quickly, but the damage is already done.

“So, you have missed us!” You cheer as the other two flush red at having been caught out. “So, what are you working on now – I assume you’re working on something, right?” You gesture to the many white boards that they have set up, with writing scrawled across all of them.

“We’re just laying the groundwork for our last movie of the year,” Yusa says. “Thanks to our windfall we have more than enough to make it.”

“I thought the money was only enough to get you through to the end of the year,” you state.

“We make movies through to the end of the year,” Eiga states without missing a beat.

>“That money basically came from my pocket, you know?”

“It came from the Student Council who took it from the account reserved from the Sensha-Do club,” Yusa replies.

You shoot her an unimpressed look and slowly nod.

“Yes, the Sensha-Do club that I help to run.” You say slowly. “And the money that pays for said club which I decide how to allocate.”

That’s not 100% correct, but it’s enough to show Yusa that her comeback wasn’t good. You hid a smirk as she splutters and goes red again.

>“I hope you’re going to put the Sensha-Do club in the credits then.”

“Our deal iz fini!” Eiga sniffs. “We ‘ave no reason to do so!”

“I can’t force you to do anything,” you chuckle as you take a seat. “It’d just be nice since I spent a day trapped inside a tank to pay for it.”

“I thought you’d like something like that,” Yusa huffs.

“Being in my tank? Yes. For an entire day while it’s rainy and cold? Maybe less yes,” you explain.

“I’ll make sure you’re in the credits,” Kusa says softly. “I’m in charge of post-production.”

“God damn it! We’re trying to put on a united front here! Stop thinking with your vagina!” Yusa shouts.

“Not my type,” Kusa replies, shaking her head as she checks you out. “Too stringy. I like the big one more.”

“Stringy? Well, if you’re talking about Axel, he already has two girlfriends, but I can see if he’s interested in another for you,” you offer as a joke.

“Please do,” she says softly as she nods.

“Uh, sure,” you hadn’t been expecting that, so you’re caught slightly off guard. “Right, moving on, what’s your latest movie going to be about?”

“Since the budget is smaller, since we spent most of it on an action movie,” you just nod at the emphasis Yusa ads. “We’re going to be making a drama. On the schoolship as much as possible.”

>“What’s it about?”
>“Do you need any extras? Or main characters for that matter?”

>“What’s it about?”

“It’s going to be a murder mystery,” Kusa says softly. “You can shoot a good one with very little in the way of expenses if you know what you’re doing.”

“If ze council does not steal zat money,” Eiga huffs.

“Hey, it’s a new council now, so they’ll be different,” you reply. “Plus the school isn’t broke anymore – or didn’t you hear about how my club got us funding from the city as well as MEXT?”

“It’s going to be a murder mystery,” Kusa repeats, glaring at Eiga. “We’re still working out the details, but that’s set in stone.”

“We want it to be a smart one,” Yusa continues. “One where you can figure out who did it before the detective if you’re paying enough attention – none of that contrived bullcrap!”

>“Can I watch you guys brainstorm?”

“Depends, will you let us work?” Yusa replies. “We don’t come barging into your office, do we?”

“You did actually if you count the warehouse as my office,” you reply. That seems to end the argument for now, and she spins about to face the whiteboards and ignore your existence.

The other two join her, and you’re finally able to watch the three of them begin to brainstorm what their murder mystery is going to look like. The quickly decide that they’re going to keep the core cast small – four or five people plus the detective, with all of them being potential suspects. There’s a brief debate on whether the detective should also be a suspect, but Kusa quickly shuts that down.

From there it develops into discussion on the murder itself. Apparently, Ooarai’s film club is of the belief that they should figure out the most important part then sculpt the rest of the movie to fit that. You’re no film expert, but it sounds like a good idea to you.

The discussion goes on for almost an hour, seemingly without any progress being made. It ends with Yusa storming off and Eiga rushing after her. Kusa seems to consider going after them for a moment before deciding against it. Instead, she heads over to a nearby minifridge and pulls out some drinks. She walks over and sits next to you, before handing you one.

>“Your friends don’t seem to like me very much.”

“They’re not my friends,” she replies, before giving you an exaggerated wink, making it obvious she’s just toeing the club line. “I think it’s just what you represent more than you as a person – they actually quite like you, you know?”

“What do you mean by that?” You ask, slightly confused.

“Well, I know they like you since otherwise they would’ve just kicked you out the second you came through the door,” she replies. “As for why, I reckon it’s because you helped us make two movies this last term, when before it’s only been one.”

“Because you guys asked for more funds than you needed,” you state. She just shrugs unapologetically you sigh and continue. “And what did you mean by ‘what I represent’?”

“The Kadotani Council,” she says softly, as if she’s afraid of how you’ll take it. When you don’t seem to explode, she takes a sip of her drink then continues. “You weren’t here for their first few years, but the budget has been shrinking for a while now and it’s led to…feelings from some clubs. Then we watch that money go into a new club that hasn’t existed for a decade, and ours effectively cease to exist?”

“Right, I get it,” you nod. “Since I’m close to the ex-council, and a member of the Sensha-Do club…”

“On the old council,” she replies, pointing to the badge Anzu gave you a while ago.

“You don’t seem to mind though,” you point out.

“Not anymore,” she shrugs. “Plus, I enjoy the eye candy.”

You must look very confused because she giggles and explains. “When the weather was better, I walked past once or twice. He’s hot.”

“Well, his track record would suggest that,” you muse.

“What’s the chances that they come back?” You ask.

“Unlikely to not happening,” Kuta replies.

“Is there any reason to stay?”

“The potential amusement of watching them argue for another couple hours?”

“Weighed against the potential of them not coming back?”

“Not worth it,” Kuta decides, standing up.

>Offer to walk her home then head home yourself.

“That looks like the right idea to me as well,” you say, standing yourself. “Would you like me to walk you back?”

“In one of the safest places in Japan?” She asks, eyebrow quirked.

“Technically we’re a bit to the east of Japan,” you reply. “A couple of feet or so.”

She doesn’t look very impressed with your reasoning, but heads for the door and gestures for you to follow her.

So, you do, turning off the light behind you.

“Should we lock it?”

“Everything expensive is in a locked cabinet,” Kuta replies, shaking her head.

You follow her out of the school building and walk next to her. She doesn’t say much, which is fine by you.

As with all student accommodations, it’s not too far from the school, so after a few minutes of walking, you reach her building.

“Thanks,” she says, nodding her head once.

>Make a note to mention Kuta to Axel

“No problem,” you reply. “I’ll make sure to let Axel know you’re, ah, interested.”

“Thanks,” she replies, not embarassed at all. “For the record, I consider us friends.”

“That’s good to know,” you reply. “See you around.”

“See ya,” she says as she turns to leave. You watch her walk to her building, then turn around and leave yourself.

Saturday 27th October (Day 194)

When you wake up that morning, there’s a text from Yuzu letting you know she’ll be back in the evening. From what’s been said in the ex-council channel, it appears Anzu is also taking the weekend to go back home.

Lots of people are doing things actually, according the various channels, meaning you’re not quite sure who’s where.

>Find out when your sister is returning to Japan

You check the time. It’s late morning here which means it’s the small hours of the night back home. In other words, the exact time you’d expect Erika to be awake. You shoot her a message asking exactly that and you’re unsurprised to immediately get a response.

A couple texts later, after you’ve been properly insulted and told how everything you’ve done is far less cool than everything she’s done, which was followed by how much mum and dad (but definitely not her) missed you. You’re finally able to ask her about her flight.

Of course, she can’t give you a straight answer, instead sending you her flight number to figure it out yourself.

You threaten to leave her at the airport, but then she reminds you that half your crew is coming back with her so it’s in your interests to know.

You go back and forth a bit before you realise that she’s just bored and creating an argument for the sake of it. Of course, she’ll never admit that, so the moment you point it out she goes back to curses and threats.

You eventually get Sunday afternoon out of her, and after promising her that you won’t forget, you climb out of bed.

>Find out how the mail girl felt about all the shopping she received

You quickly realise that you have nothing to do. As you munch away at breakfast, you decide that you never saw the resolution of your visit to the mall. Yuzu certainly hasn’t complained about any missing clothes, so you reckon that it went well.

You get dressed and head to the mail room. As with most things on Ooarai, it’s a short walk. A rather chilly one since winter is setting in but walking briskly helps to alleviate some of the chill.

When you reach the mail room, you can almost instantly feel the malice directed towards you.

“I despise you,” the girl in charge huffs.

>“Everyone who’s ever said that has liked me eventually. So think of it as character building.”

“The only thing I’m building is muscle lugging the crap you get sent here around,” she replies, still glaring at you. “Gun barrels! You got gun barrels sent to me! The other things are part of my job, but a tank barrel? Tank bullets? Really?”

“Well, how else am I meant to get them?” You ask. “I can’t exactly get it sent to a PO box on land since it might be weeks till we get to a specific port again.”

“Crap like that should be ordered and delivered through the club,” she hisses. “Not posted like a toy!”

“The tank shells and the barrel were personal items though,” you explain. She seems to be gaping like a fish at that, so you continue. “I own my tank you know. Not the school. Anything outside of battle damage, wear and tear, and match supplies are my personal problem.”

“What? Why would anyone need to own a tank?”

“Why does a golfer own a set of clubs?” You retort. “They need it for their livelihood.”

“A tank is more like a race car,” she counters. “No way someone can maintain one alone.”

“I’m not alone, I have four crewmates to help me,” you retort. “Plus, if you’re good enough people are willing to throw a bit of money or help your way.”

“I know what a sponsor is,” she snaps back.

“Then you know how I can afford to own a tank and therefore need to receive this stuff personally,” you finish with a nod.

“Why are you even here?” She says, changing tact. “According to my back, there’s nothing in here for you.”

“I’m here to check on you,” you reply. “Since I know you recently received about a dozen peoples’ worth of shopping.”

“Huh? Oh, that was easy since it was clothes, not tank parts,” she replies. She’s still glaring but she’s slightly redder now. “No one’s ever done that before…”

>“I never did get your name.”

“And you’re not going to get it,” she huffs, glaring daggers at you. It seems that despite your act of kindness she’s not that much more inclined to like you than before.

“Really? It won’t be that hard for me to get it,” you reply. “All I have to do is check the records to see who works the mailroom.”

“So do it,” she shrugs. “As we’ve previously established, I don’t like you, so it’s my sworn duty to inconvenience you.”

“You haven’t been doing a very good job of it then,” you point out. “Since I’ve been able to get everything to do with this room done relatively efficiently.

“Sworn duty to inconvenience you versus the job I’m getting paid for,” she sighs. “She will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both revenge and money.”

“The bible?”

“I thought it was fitting,” she replies.

“Since you hate me religiously?” You ask. You see the beginnings of a snigger before she realises and hides it in a cough.

“Yes,” she nods, glaring at you again. “You got it in one.”

“So, you going to give me a name or not then?” You ask.

“Not on your life,” she huffs. “Now get out, I have work to do.”

“Sit and watch a room of boxes?” You ask. “Sure, sounds like tough work.”

“You’re not doing a good job of getting me to like you,” she says.

“Well, you said you never would,” you shrug as you walk out of the mail room. “Can I come back again?”

“Uh, sure?” She looks confused for a moment before her eyes harden again. “That doesn’t change anything!”

She slams the door shut behind you – impressive since it’s a bulkhead door, but you can’t help grinning.

“They always do,” you chuckle to yourself. You check the time as you head back up to the deck. You have some time before Yuzu’s going to be back. Not too much though, anything you do would probably be cut short if you wanted to go out to meet her when she gets back.

>Make sure you can meet her at the port when she gets back.

You decide quickly that you want to be there when Yuzu gets back. That being said, you don’t want to be waiting there for several hours in the cold. You shoot Yuzu a text telling her to let you know when she’s close, then head for home.

Your phone buzzes as you enter your apartment. She’ll be home in a couple of hours, meaning you don’t have to be at the port for one and a bit.

>And do go look up her name. It shouldn't take long.

That gives you plenty of time to find out about the mail girl. The easiest way, in your opinion, is just to ask your friends and see if they know. You send a message asking what her name is in the Sensha-Do club group chat, grab Otto, sit back, and relax.

It takes exactly seven minutes for you to get a reply. Azusa, your ever helpful protégé, dutifully informs you her name is Yubi. Which is confirmed moments later by members of Anteater team who also relay how nice a person she is, a very different picture to the one you’ve seen, but you chalk that up to her not really liking you that much.

With that done as well, you’re left with basically nothing on your plate until Yuzu arrives.

>Browse the internet, see what the latest news is and check /tanks/.

You turn on the TV for some background noise and get to what you’re actually planning to do to kill time – browse the internet.

You start with the more mainstream sites, checking to see what they’re talking about in terms of tankery. On top of the regular professional events, lots of them are also talking about the upcoming World Cup. There’s not much that you don’t know already, but you do note that Germany has apparently dropped several places on the predicted winners list. There’s no reason given, but a quick search reveals some small scandal about funding being misappropriated.

You throw out a quick prayer for your national team before switching over to the /tanks/ board. Since it’s more specialised, you’re able to find more amateur events including the upcoming Winter Cup. Apparently, Ooarai are tipped as the favourites to win on the board, given their recent performance. You don’t screenshot that to be printed out and stuck on a wall later.

Beyond that there’s a little about the duelling league. Apparently, it was considered a successful experiment, and the powers that be are thinking of rolling it out further. How it’s going to be rolled out hasn’t been decided yet.

The timer you set to remind you to head to the docks goes off. After removing Otto from your lap, and getting an earful for it, you make your way to the docks. You make your way there, and you don’t have to wait long before Yuzu comes into view. You can see several figures, probably her parents and a couple members of her family trailing behind her. You watch as they say all the goodbyes before Yuzu walks up the ramp onto the ship.

“Hi,” she greets you as you pull her in for a hug. She waves to her family again before the two of you pull away and begin walking back into town. “My dad said it was ‘a damn good thing’ you were waiting for me.”

>“I live to please.”

“And if my dad heard you say that he’s probably say that’s ‘as it should be’,” Yuzu snickers.

“Old fashioned, huh?” You muse.

“You don’t know the half of it,” Yuzu groans. “He’s mellowed out a bit with age, but he was a nightmare when I was younger.”

“Do I want to know?” You ask. “Did he try to interrogate Anzu and Momo or something?”

“Almost,” she sighs. “Their parents. He did it casually but remembering it now I still feel so embarassed.”

“I didn’t get interrogated,” you say before reconsidering that. “I didn’t get interrogated much.”

“That’s because my mother likes you,” Yuzu replies. “She has him wrapped around his finger and luckily she’s far more relaxed.”

“So the opposite of my house then,” you reply.

“Exactly,” Yuzu nods.

The two of you head back to your apartment. Yuzu seems to be very tired and is sat on the sofa for all of ten minutes before she falls asleep on your shoulder. Otto, sensing an opportunity, jumps up to use you as a source of warmth, leaving you double trapped on the sofa, giving you no other option than to give in and fall asleep too.

Sunday 28th October (Day 195)

You wake up in bed. You must’ve migrated to it at some point during the night, but for the life of you, you can’t remember. Yuzu and Otto are also in bed with you. You roll over and look to the ceiling while you think about the day ahead of you. Your sister and parts of your crew will be coming back in the afternoon, meaning you have the morning free.

>Take Yuzu out for breakfast, just the two of you.

You roll over again to look at Yuzu, and an idea comes to mind. Going out for breakfast to a nice café might help to kill some time while you wait for your sister.

“Hey, Yuzu,” you say as you gently shake her. “How do you feel about breakfast before I go to pick up my sister and crew?”

“Mmm, a date? That sounds nice,” she mumbles as she begins waking up. “But first, five more minutes.”

>See about arranging for Rosehip to be there, to mess with your sister.

“A date you say,” you hum, stroking your chin. An idea quickly forms in your head and a few moments later you spring into action to bring it to fruition.

Even better, it requires almost no effort to do. Rosehip jumps at the opportunity when you mention it to her, and the aviation club has new pilots in the pipeline who need the opportunity for more hours. Dropping in by helicopter should be sufficient to properly screw with your sister.

With that sorted, you turn your attention back to your breakfast date. Yuzu’s already up and getting ready. Unfortunately, your scheming means you’re too late to join her in the shower.

Eventually, you get over the opportunity cost of messing with your sister and get ready yourself. Thankfully, your routine is much quicker than Yuzu’s and you finish at about the same time, you leave some food out for Otto, then head out the door.

It’s a nice day out, though a bit chilly. That’s not helped by the wind as the two of you head into town on your bike. The speed does make it quick though, and you’re soon seated inside a small café Yuzu suggested. The menu has quite the selection for breakfast, and you quickly narrow it down to several options.

“So, what’ll you be having,” you ask Yuzu as you make your own decision to go with a continental

“I’ll be having the full English,” she decides after a moment to look at the menu. “It looks exotic.”

“Exotic, huh?” You chuckle. For her it probably is since England is on the other side of the world. You heavily consider getting one yourself, but ultimately opt for the continental since it promises a load of pastries, and you’ve never had a pastry you don’t like.

You head to the counter, order, and pay.

“So, what’s the plan for today?” Yuzu asks.

“Well, after we eat, the first thing I’m going to do is embarrass my sister when she arrives at the airport,” you say.

“The over attached sibling routine?” Yuzu asks.

“Nope, I have something even better planned,” you reply shaking your head.

Yuzu opens her mouth to speak but is interrupted by the food arriving. You get a couple of minutes to arrange all the dishes on the table and start attacking a pain au chocolat before Yuzu continues.

“So, are you going to tell me?”

“It’s a surprise,” you reply, shaking your head.

“Tell me,” Yuzu pouts at you.

“No,” you reply through a mouthful of croissant.

“Tell me.”

“No.”

“Tell me.”

“No.”

Yuzu manages to keep it up for a full two minutes before giving in and turning back to her breakfast. You just take another bite of your cinnamon roll.

You soon finish your breakfast, and about a quarter of Yuzu’s after she fills up and resigns before heading to the airport.

It’s a short ride there, and you’re able to find free parking which isn’t a given at airports. As you’re waiting out front, you get a message from Rosehip asking where she should get the pilot to land.

>The street’s big enough, and the people of Ooarai like you. Tell her to land in the middle of it.,
>The airport has helipads in view of the terminal. Erika will definitely spot it there.
>Delay for now and tell her once Erika is out of the airport so you can see her face properly.

>The street’s big enough, and the people of Ooarai like you. Tell her to land in the middle of it.

As you reach the entrance to the airport, you look around. The short stay is on the other side of the terminal, and this entrance is pedestrian only. Despite that, it’s a rather big plaza meaning…

You text Rosehip back telling her to let the pilot know to bring it down on the plaza, then put your phone away and wait.

It’s about five minutes later that you begin to hear the thump-thump-thump of rotor blades. Coincidentally, Erika seems to have landed as well, and is now blowing up your phone.

“Is that one of our helicopters?” Yuzu asks, squinting in the direction of the noise. You follow her gaze, and sure enough, you spot one of Ooarai’s Huey’s making an approach on the plaza.

“Seems like it,” you reply.

“This is how you’re going to embarrass your sister?” She asks. “How would the helicopter do that?”

“Just watch,” you say. It rapidly approaches and is soon hovering over the plaza. That’s when the door opens, and a figure appears.

“Ah,” Yuzu nod.

“It is I! Rosehip!” Rosehip cries over the noise of the rotors. You gesture to the pilot to go around and that you’ll let them know when to return. The helicopter pulls off, leaving the three of you to face the door.

Erika is first out the door. Her face lights up upon spotting you. It lights up even more when she spots Rosehip but she’s also very confused.

“Surprise!” You shout as you move forward to wrap her in a hug.

“Wah?” She’s too confused to fight the affection. “Rosehip’s here?”

“No, it’s her twin,” you reply, getting a snort from Erika. She wriggles out of your grip and hands you her bag.

“Could you take this back for me? Please?”

>“No.” But actually yes.
>“Why not head back to the ship and relax for a bit?”
>“You didn’t take anything with you, so what did bring back?”

>“No.” But actually yes.

Her face drops for all of a minute before you take the bag anyway. She hands it to you casually, but when you take it, you almost drop it and have to struggle slightly to pick it up.

“This is heavy,” you grunt as you sling it over one shoulder.

>“You didn’t take anything with you, so what did bring back?”

“A present,” she cheers. “Open the bag!”

You put it down and unzip the bag. You reach in to grab whatever’s in there and promptly pull it out again when you get jabbed. Erika snickers as you glare at her. You open the bag more carefully, and you’re greated by a long, pointy rod that you instantly recognise.

“A sabot?” You ask as you pull it out. “What? How did you get this? How did you get this through security?”

“It’s defective! A bit like you, so when the tankers gave it to me after the exercise we did, I knew where it had to go!”

“And security?”

“I just declared it, and they put it in the hold!”

“Right, well thank you very much,” you say.

“You’re welcome,” she nods. “Now if you excuse us, we’ll be off!”

She grabs Rosehip and the two shoot off into the town.

“See ya!” Ruby shouts after them. Her and Axel have just appeared from the terminal themselves. Like Erika they travelled light, with a single rucksack between them. “I assume Rosehip is your doing?”

“Guilty as charged,” you chuckle. You give her a hug and shake Axel’s hand. “If the two of you don’t feel like walking, then you’re in luck.”

“Oh, thank god,” Ruby groans as she spots the helicopter overhead. “All I did was sleep and I still feel tired as hell.”

“That’s air travel for you!” Yuzu laughs.

>Follow them back to the schoolship on your bike.

>Spend the rest of the afternoon in town with Yuzu.

The helicopter lands again. Ruby and Axel take the opportunity to get a quick ride back to Ooarai and climb aboard. Once the two of them hop on, the door slides close, and the helicopter pulls up and away.

“I hope we’re not going to get in trouble for that,” Yuzu hums, as she watches the helicopter fly off.

“Eh, Ooarai loves us,” you shrug, dismissing her worry. The two of you slowly begin to walk to where you left your bike. “Maybe we’ll get a sternly worded letter, but that’s Hana’s problem now.”

“She’s our friend,” Yuzu scolds, you, slapping your arm, but you don’t miss the small smile.

“I don’t hear you disapproving of my idea,” you reply, earning your arm another thump. “This is domestic abuse!”

“Are you asking for another?” she asks, holding up her hand.

“No, you win,” you manage between snickers as you reach your bike.

“Are we heading back to the schoolship?” She asks as she climbs on.

“I was thinking that we spend the rest of the afternoon in town,” you reply as you start the engine.

“That sounds like a great idea,” she replies. With her agreement, you set off into town. You’re not moving for very long before you come across something to do. Yuzu points out a bowling alley that doubles as an arcade. Apparently neither of you have been bowling for a while, so you pull in and get to it.

After acquiring some bowling shoes, the two of you make your way to your lane.

“I’ll have you know I’m a dab hand at bowling,” Yuzu warns you.

“Really?” You ask as you weigh a ball.

“No,” she snickers. “I can count the number of strikes I’ve scored on one hand.”

>Try as hard as you can at the bowling and in the arcade.

>Try hard in the arcade but not bowling.

“Well,” you chuckle in response to that. “There’s a reason Erika calls me a clown when I bowl, and it isn’t because of the shoes.” It’s a tiny lie. Erika has called you a clown and it isn’t because of the shoes, but it was more to do with Erika being Erika than any lack of bowling skill on your part.

“Younger siblings should respect their elders,” Yuzu replies, but her wise words are undermined by the laugh she hides in a cough.

You just grunt in mock anger and stomp your way over to the alley. You fling the ball down the alley and your effort is rewarded by a single pin being knocked over on the left before the ball tips into the gutter.

“Guess I’m out of practice,” you quip to laughter and applause from Yuzu. You score a couple more pins with your next ball, but not as many as Yuzu who gets all but one in the middle. That sets the tone for the rest of the set.

Yuzu remains slightly ahead of you throughout it. Not that you mind since not competing means your able to try out all manner of different bowling methods, including, but not limited to backwards, by spinning, and attempting to moonwalk.

None of them are particularly effective at knocking over pins which is a tad annoying. They are however effective at getting Yuzu to laugh which you count as a win anyway.

You get a couple of games out of your alley before your time runs out. After reclaiming your shoes, the two of you head into the connected arcade.

>Let Yuzu take first pick since she won the bowling.
>Suggest a racing game. You can drive a tank – how hard can a game be?
>Suggest a shooting game. You’re no gunner but your reactions are decent.
>Suggest air hockey. You don’t know what skill translates, but there probably is one.

We should get another update in before the end, but if not, thank you very much for playing. Next thread we'll be back to tanks, so I want to know what you thought of this interlude.

Fun? Boring? Interesting? I have two weeks planned for christmas, but if you think that's too long then feel free to have a go at me.

Once again, thanks for playing.

I can also promise there will be a lot of tanks over the next few threads, so don't worry about that.

>Let Yuzu take first pick since she won the bowling.

“I suppose it’s only fair to let you take first pick, since you won,” you say with a dramatic sigh as you gesture towards the arcade.

“How kind of you,” Yuzu giggles. She scans the assembled machines and games for a moment before her eyes land on one of them. “That one!”

You follow her finger, and the second you spot the machine, you feel a bead of sweat appear on your forehead.

“Are you su-”

“Yes,” she replies, cutting you off. “Tonight, we dance.”

“It’s halfway through the afternoon,” you mutter as you move towards it.

“You don’t seem very enthusiastic all of a sudden,” Yuzu teases you. “Afraid to lose again?”

“I just think you have an unfair advantage is all,” you reply with another dramatic huff. “Since you’ve been dancing since you were a kid, and I am barely trained.”

“Barely trained by me,” she replies. “Big difference.”

“Modest much?” You quip as she begins putting coins into the machine.

“False modesty is an insult to yourself,” Yuzu replies as she takes off her heels and steps onto the dance pad. “Ready to lose?”

“As ever,” you reply, finishing your stretching before stepping onto the pad. A song starts playing as you do, and a moment later, the character appears on screen to show you how to move.

You do well at first – even being ahead of Yuzu at one point, but slowly as the intensity ramps up, it starts to get harder and harder for you, and you begin to fall further and further behind.

By two thirds of the way through the song, Yuzu’s dominance is confirmed, and you’re falling further behind. Eventually, you give up entirely, and just watch in awe as Yuzu manages to earn a decently high spot on the leaderboard.

“As I said,” she huffs as she wipes away some of the sweat. “False modesty is insulting, to you and myself.”
