Welcome to ASTHYIREA, a planet around an anomalously green star and with a moon that glows orange at night, itself producing its own light as well.
The ocean is teal and slightly sweet, and a glowing grid makes its way across the planet. Only barely visible at best during the day, but totally visible at night. The planet only has one ocean inside a crater, surrounded by pillars and statues of a long-gone society. Yet on this mostly dry rock, life has arisen...

How to play:
• Open an image of a species in MS Paint, or your image editor of choice.
• Make one evolutionary change to that species, though you can have multiple branches to a species in one image.
Save as .PNG!
• Post your new species in the thread with a description of what evolution you've added and why.
Please name your creature. If the creature is replacing its predecessor, it can keep its name, though if creating a new species, give it a new name. Makes it easier to keep track of.
• Details regarding a creature’s size or name are encouraged, but not required.
• Nothing too outlandish. Anything silly or derailing will not be considered a canon species 95% of the time.

Notes:
• Unless stated explicitly, no species is extinct, unless it's been replaced by a descendant. If two users posted an evo to the same base creature around the same time, they'll both be added, though one may get a name change.
• Try to make your evolutions gradual, it gives more options for speciation, even if this evogame is a bit soft.
• I'll provide an EvoWeb which will include the extant and extinct organisms semi-regularly. They take a bit of time so please be patient
• Expect a Random World Event at least once per thread to shake up the world and game.
• Have fun

New to the Game?:
• Don't be shy. If you have an idea for an organism and want to spend the time making it, please by all means do so.
• We also have a Discord to keep you up to date on EvoGame activities, and chat with other folks and myself. https://discord.gg/82nhT6f
• Just a note, while it doesn't matter how intertwined your organism is with the rest of the ecosystem, the more dependent it is on the existence of other creatures, the more potential your organism has to survive into future threads.

I'll be posting the base organisms and other helpful resources below, so keep your eyes peeled.

[1/5]
>>
By day the planet is bathed in the green light of its star, the skies turning a teal to pink gradient, and illuminating white sands, white rubble, and turquoise oceans.
By night the planet is illuminated by the orange glow of its moon, turning the oceans a deep maroon and giving an ashen complexion to the sand. The blue grid becomes apparent, and all of the statues become pink, also gaining a chromatic aberration effect, and those with faces get a glitchy censor bar over their eyes.

It is in this odd world our creatures will live in...

The organisms who live here are equally as odd:
The lofi are coastal creatures who come out at night, their colouration mimicking the grid pattern of the ground at those times. They're small, and feast on the WAVE berries and the occasional Tosh egg. They themselves lay eggs, and don't have the best binocular vision due to their visor-like mono-eye.
The WAVE are akin to fungi or grasses, though are neither, being somewhere between the two. They're quite widespread and live both under shallow water and into the coast, though have to be within range of water. They vary in size, though they tower over most of the other organisms on the planet.
The Tosh are crepuscular creatures made of the same odd material that the ruins are made of. In their short hours of activity, they feast on WAVE berries and any unlucky lofi they can find, bringing them to a mouth under their bodies. They can see in front of them, despite not having any visible eyes.
The Fiji are fully aquatic creatures that hang out near the coast. They're awake during the day and sleep in the underwater WAVE forests at night. They'll eat just about anything, WAVE berries, lofi eggs, lofi themselves, Tosh eggs. They have an interesting graduated pattern to their body that morphs and shifts over time, making it seem like they have no outline to their bodies. They're ovoviviparous, holding their eggs in their bodies until they hatch and the baby leave the parent's pouch.

>>
Planet Aesthyirea, or as it is at colloquially written as A E S T H Y I R E A is home to fascinating collection of ecologically young, but unique organisms. It's scantly present seas and waterways are teeming with life that has only recently diverged from the ancestral Fiji.

The Vice Fiji has taken up the niche of a diurnal specialist predator, targeting slow moving Tosh wading in the dawn or dusk tides in search of food of their own, or feeding on the other more generalist Fiji genera in the waters around it. It's clamping jaws are able to ensnare prey with ease and even crack the shells of smaller Tosh.

The Loafer Fiji on the otherhand is a fully herbivorous grazer, feeding on the many kinds of Wave Plants species in the shallow waters, and especially feeding on their nutritious and tasty berries. Their flatter body, allows them to more easily rest on the seafloor when not grazing.

The Mini Fiji has shrunk significantly in size, only measuring up to about 2-3 centimeters in length. Their smaller size grants them more mobility to avoid larger predators, and a lower food demand. They often travel in small school of 10-25 individuals, darting about the shallows during the twilight hours in search of food, may it be Wave Berries, or submerged eggs of Tosh and Lofis.

The Invert Fiji adopted a similar path to the nocturnal Fuji, acting as an opportunist hunter and generalist during Aesthyirea's nights. Their demure color tones, allow them to blend in better in maroon hued waters at night, as they stalk unaware Fuji or simply searching for eggs and Wave berries to feast upon.

Elsewhere on the coastal shores and even some spots inland on Planet Aesthyirea, life has also branched out to fill and create new niches in the burgeoning ecosystem from the ancestral Lofi and Tosh clades, as well as a new pioneering strain of Wave plant.

The Big Lofi is a fairly rudimentary evolution on the Lofi body plan, having roughly doubled in size, and developing a larger mouth to take advantage of all the ever expanding food sources on the shores and shallow waters of its planet.

The Wedge Lofi on the other-hand has adopted an ambush predator lifestyle, evolving its once mostly-benign proboscis into wedge that they use to charge and pushover the top heavy Tosh or boxy Lofi to turn into an easy meal for them. The pointy wedge allows them to stab and chip away at the flesh of prey, letting them cut and swallow chunks of meat whole with its agape maw rested beneath it's Wedge-like rostrum.

The Sucker Tosh has specialized its tendrils that once doubled as feeding appendages to now act as sensitive feelers for sensing its surroundings and identifying food, friend or foe. As these feelers are important to the Tosh, they are able to retractive into a protective marble-like sleeve to protect them. They additionally have a short, opposable trunk for grabbing small food items for consumption.
>>
>>5118001
Just ran out of space, so this became a two-parter.

Finally, we have the Wavern, a unique variety of the ancestral Wave plant that has taken the first crucial steps to becoming a fully terrestrial plant. It has developed a more definable stalk, as well as taller leaf sprouts and berry placement, so as to let its berries fully ripen. Most notably though its, ability to retain water has, given this plant the unique, albeit fleeting ability to endure further into the for now harsh inland regions of Aesthyirea.

Effervescent
The escape of gas from a liquid solution. The act of a liquid boiling or bubbling.

As time has gone on, the ocean of Ashtyriea have become effervescent due to some anomalous carbonation. This along with large cracks forming in the ground under the ocean both cause the water to drain away from the land, the remaining water becoming some sort of soda, due to its sweetness and carbonation.
How will life adapt to this strange new predicament?

• Now that the water is retreating, all creatures now must fight to gain access to the water. Any species that are deemed too water inefficient will be marked as "in danger." Every once in awhile, a d20 will be rolled, and if it hits an 8 or below, the more evolutions that have happened since this event slowly raising that number until anything in danger will become extinct 100% of the time.

Due to the receding oceans, the many Fiji derivatives had to adapt or die.

The Crush Fiji evolved their rows of teeth into a single large beak-like structure. This allows them to eat much harder and much larger things, their diet consisting of Vorsage, InToro and the like.
The S.Vice Fiji couldn't rely on their strategy of hiding in the WADE forests anymore, and so branched out. They've desaturated their body quite a bit, flattened out, and moved all their of their eyes upward. This allows them to hide in the sand, waiting for any unfortunate creature to come near them.
As time has gone on, the Invert Fiji have continued to get better at nighttime hunting, evolving larger eyes that help them focus and not be so disoriented by the nighttime chromatic aberration.
Other Invert Fiji became smaller due to the lesser amount of area they had to live in. The Minivert Fiji are basically the same, though they're smaller and hide in the brambles of the Wade roots in the daytime.

Due to the receding waters, BLADE begin growing sideways instead of straight up, so that they don't end up protruding out of the sea and having their tips exposed to open air. This way, they're able to maintain their position while in shallow areas.

The D.Vise Fiji grow closer in color to WAVE, as they begin producing a pigment close to it's hue. It is most noticable around the tail segment, but it also exists along the midpoint.

>>5123326

In order to save more energy during jumps, the Fujot slims down, and becomes slightly longer as well for faster movement speed.

>>5121118

The Wyrm is horribly inefficient with it's amount of wheels, so it evolves to replace them with two treads. These make it easier to move over rough terrain and more efficient, but have the cost of slowing it down. This leaves it slightly more open to predator Tosh.

>>5121809

The Bane starts drawing more minerals from the ground, and deeper inside as well. This leads to it's crystalization becoming greater, and often the minerals it draws from an area make it deficient of minerals, leading to fast growth and then a stagnation till the minerals recover or the bane seeds reach another area.

The BANE split off into two distinct species based on how close they are to the shore.
-
The BAKE actually mostly degranulate themselves of minerals during high tide, growing ever closer to the water, and then as the tide starts to lower, they reaccumulate minerals to act as a protective barrier during low-tide.
-
The BAN are as close as you can be to being inland without actually being inland. At the edges of the coasts, the BAN stand as singular blades, their roots unable to ferry enough moisture and nutrients for any others, and that blade having become entirely mineralized.

Some of the wyrm continue to develop more efficient locomotion, eventually settling on a screw-drive, as their treads kept getting them stuck in the wet sand.
-
Meanwhile others became the wyrd, their treads being replaced by rows of paddles that let them swim on the surface of the water, most of their diet consisting of CLIDE or Apop.

The D.Vice Fiji reach an even closer resemblance to the WADE forests, tails being the same colour and their faux fruit bumps being more berry-looking.
-
Other D.Vice Fiji who weren't as convincing later became the R.Vice Fiji, their stations and more slender form helping them hide in the root systems of the WADE/BLADE forests, attacking when their prey is vulnerable.

Some InTorsh started to grow longer in order to take advantage of WAVines, fooling them into growing around them. This strategy results into the Vi/nTorsh which has a readily available source of food in the form of fruit that falls off the WAVine, reducing the need to forage for food.

WA/Vorsh further specialize, scooping into its empty body not only water, but also some soil as the foundation, becoming an ideal place for the WAVERN inside it to grow. These ideal conditions also resulted into the growth of WAVERNS inside it to reach unprecedented levels, which forced the WA/Vorsh to reach bigger sizes, as well as stronger limbs in order to support itself. Although it may seem cumbersome it has its benefits, as it can directly reach for the WAVERN fruit instead of waiting for it to fall off, highly reducing the need to forage for food.

>>5123153
Some Toshsot angle their wedges downwards, leading to the Toss Sot, who use their wedges to dredge through the coasts for any detritus they can find.

>>5122885
Some WA/VEdish become wider, able to hold more water in them, and consequentially, more symbiotic plants. This lets the WA/VEdudish have access to berries at night, and also means they act as propagators for their symbiotes.

>>5123041
Over time, the Posh splits into two new species, the first being the tiny Poh.
The Poh live around the WA/VEdish and WA/VEdudish, sustaining themselves off of the water inside them, as well as eating any berries they don't. Their small size means they don't require a lot to live, but basically cannot survive without their large hosts since they'd be eaten by basically everything.
The second species is the Poss, who live around particularly dry areas where the sweet water has bubbled away into a thick syrup, having an adaptation where they filter out the water from the sugar, ejecting the sugar out the sides of their bodies, creating sugar deposits around themselves.

>>5118818
With the advent of the WA/VEdish and WA/VEdudish, there was bound to be some creatures who would attack them for food and water. They use their wedge-shaped facial adornment to try and crack their hull to eat whatever chips off or drink the water that'll come spilling out. If they can't manage to break it on their first try, they'll happily snack on some of the orbiting Poh as a meal instead.

After Awhile the Oceans Stopped Retreating

What was left behind were various smaller barely connected oceans. They were either connected underground, or cut off from each other by small land bridges or entire cliff walls. Due to many caves appearing though, life wasn't cut off from each other, though now it was trapped deep within the crater.
Along with the ocean drying up, some pockets of thick, sugary water, or rather, syrup were left behind, allowing life to get a very concentrated source of the sweet stuff in small puddles or even some entire little lakes of syrup.

Though, oddly... the oceans continue to be effervescent, still releasing quite a bit of carbon into the air. So maybe the worse has yet to come...

And just an update to our typing chart, including some of the ones added in the past as well as some for the new environments.
BTW I should mention that "syrup" means that it's living inside the syrup pools rather than around, please add coastal along with the syrup tag to specify it living around them rather than inside the syrup.
As for aquafers, just add the coastal or water tags to the creature along with the cave tag to denote aquafers.

Some Wabush convergently evolve with the COREn by surrounding their berries with leaves for their protection, exposing the berries when they are ready for consumption. WAFLOR is the name of this plant, and petal-like leaves are not its only adaptation, as it grows near syrup pools. WAFLOR uses its berries not only as a way of seed dispersal, but also as a way of disposing of excess sugar by making the berries sweeter than they’ve ever been before, encouraging animals to eat its berries and spread the seeds.

As there’s plenty of open niches for WABUSH to occupy, it further diversifies, leading to new developments for its new lifestyles.

WAFERN is the result of WABUSH that frequent areas with a lot of shade and humidity, developing multiple leaves in order to better catch the humidity around, the arrangement of the leaves as if they were one leaf also helps for flexibility when moving its leaves towards sunlight, or simply to give space for an individual of the same species to catch sunlight. Its berries are easily accessible, as WAFERN actively benefits from its seeds being spread around, although it will not germinate on dry areas.

RHUWArV is the result of WABUSH that grow on dryer but still temperate areas, developing big leaves that not only catch a lot of sunlight but also gives itself shade, as well as directing cumulated water towards its body when it rains. As the leaves are big and stiff RHUWArV cannot move them around much, but this isn’t an issue since the sunlight it gets is enough anyway. As these plants occupy a lot of space they grow relatively separate from each other, leaving empty space with shade produced by its leaves, where RHUWArV berries sometimes fall after becoming ripe.

[Evodump pt.1]
As much of the WAVine have been forced closer to the coasts due to shrinking areas of water, they've started to cling onto many other things.
- One is the WAVelp, who are actually free-standing and live in the water. They're able to live much deeper in water due to their height, and push the WAVE forests further into the oceans. Their fruits also have more sugar due to the WAVelp using them to detoxify themselves.
- The CAVine are WAVine who have attached themselves to the mouths of coastal caves, using the walls to anchor themselves instead of the rubble pillars in the open. They can't get too deep into the caves, but their berries illuminate the caves, giving more visibility than the blue grids inside.
- Other WAVine grow onto the largest moving organism on the planet as of now: the MindFreak Tosh. They attach themselves to it whenever it's asleep and slowly grow their way up the legs. They don't hinder its movements, and the sheer stride length allows their seeds to spread far and wide.

Meanwhile, above the oceans, the Glide become even lighter. Due to the increasing carbonation of the oceans, the Glide can stay in the air indefinitely, never even touching the water, and getting all of their nutrients from the mist formed above the oceans. Their blades have also become wide and flat, meaning they can get more surface area.

Near the coasts, some BLADE become short and entirely horizontal. Since the basal WAVE no longer exist, the BRAE have come to fill that niche as low-lying intertidal flora. The flatness of the BRAE helps them stay underwater for as long as possible.

Further inland, the WAUNDSH also become flat, their leaves and berries being the only things visible from above ground. The rest of their body has atrophied, and the job of storing water has fallen onto their roots, who have developed thick, tuber-like sections to store nutrients and water. This lets them go further inland now that they need not worry about losing moisture as much.

Even further inland, further inland than their WACTUS progenitors even, the WACTUFF have stored most of their bodies underground, meaning that less of their body will lose moisture to the outside heat, while the remaining bits of their anatomy is formed into a spiky dome with their berries at the end. Their berries are now on long stalks that eventually dry out, and when wind passes by, will break the berries away for them to grow away from their parents.

[evodump pt 2]

Meanwhile, with the animals of Aesthyirea...

The wedge clofi are wedge lofi who developed to seek out the MindFreak Tosh and clamber up them, hammering away at their joints while they sleep. Since their legs are so thick, wedge clofi hunt in packs so they can properly drill into their knee joints to score themselves a hefty meal.

The Abimp further specialize to float above the oceans. They're mostly away from danger, and eat GLIDE and CLIDE as they use their flattened limbs as rudders to steer them in the air.

Meanwhile, the balloon lofi start living up to their name more, and float above the oceans for short periods of time. While still acting as a moisture catcher, much of their mouth pyramid has been filled with air, and has outcropings to help give it surface area to stay afloat, the bodies resting just underwater. They use this massive mouth to consume Abimp, Apop, GLIDE and CLIDE before returning inland to rest during the day.

The Imash turns into two separate, though basically the same species, separate only because of their times of activity. Both the Imount-X and Imount-P live in the tall WAVelp forests, always clambering up and down their tall bodies. Their diet consists of mainly WAVelp berries and either Mini Fiji for X, or Mini Veji for P.

The Cai-Fi are Cli-Fi who have clambered onto the bodies of CAVine, and swing from CAVine to CAVine, eating their berries and sleeping in their tangle of roots by day. Their arms have become longer to support this suspesorial lifestyle.

Some D.Vice Fiji clambered into the caves and found themselves a nice food source in the CAVine fruits and Cai-fi. Mostly in smaller caves, the D.Vica Fiji awaken whenever they feel hungry, moving from the coast and into the small coastal caves to eat, some D.Vica Fiji even living in near-shore aquafers in the caves.
